  1. How does the thought of studying the Bible strike you?

  2. It's the idea.

  3. I'm going to study the Bible.

  4. Some church members,

  5. and I hope not in this room right now,

  6. but some church members would say,

  7. I think I'll study the Bible,

  8. I think I'll study the Bible,

  9. I think boring, irrelevant to life.

  10. And if a person thinks like that,

  11. they rarely, if ever, read it at home.

  12. And they don't really get too excited about

  13. coming to church and hearing somebody teach it or preach it.

  14. Now, on the other hand, there are church members,

  15. and maybe some in here who think in terms of

  16. studying the Bible in a positive way,

  17. like studying their favorite subject in school, like history.

  18. Some people think of studying the Bible as

  19. learning new facts about God, about people,

  20. about other things that you consider to be interesting in the Bible.

  21. Now, I hope you understand that

  22. these are two extreme and wrong ways to look at the Bible.

  23. The Bible is the Word of God,

  24. and so it is not boring.

  25. And we who preach and teach,

  26. we need to make sure we don't make our teaching and preaching boring.

  27. It's not irrelevant to our lives.

  28. It's very spot on to how we live in this world.

  29. But we also need to understand,

  30. the Bible is not an encyclopedia of religious knowledge.

  31. It's not a book we should read just to acquire more information.

  32. The Bible really is the Word of God

  33. that He has given to us

  34. to make a practical difference in our lives.

  35. The Bible is God's story.

  36. It's a story about creation,

  37. about human beings' rebellion against God.

  38. And then God's gigantic,

  39. from Genesis to Revelation, rescue plan.

  40. His way of calling men and women and boys and girls

  41. to faith in Jesus, salvation.

  42. Now, when we open the Bible with that idea,

  43. we're going to find that God reveals what we should believe,

  44. what is right to believe,

  45. and what we shouldn't believe.

  46. Everything that people talk about of a religious or spiritual nature

  47. is not true.

  48. It's not valid.

  49. It's not going to do anything but lead us astray.

  50. And if we come to the Bible with the right attitude,

  51. we'll find that the Bible not only teaches us what to believe,

  52. but how to live,

  53. how not to live in this world

  54. in order to please God

  55. and make the most, the best of our own lives.

  56. We come to the Bible the right way,

  57. with a teachable attitude.

  58. The Spirit of God, you'll see it on the screen,

  59. will inform our minds,

  60. stir our emotions,

  61. and move us to action.

  62. That's what, maybe not every time,

  63. sometimes we come to the Bible,

  64. even in church, the Bible study,

  65. personally in the mornings, whenever you read,

  66. sometimes we're tired, we're sleepy,

  67. we just don't have it.

  68. But on a regular basis,

  69. we come to the Bible with the right attitude,

  70. a teachable attitude.

  71. The Spirit of God should inform our minds,

  72. stir our emotions,

  73. and move us to do it.

  74. To believe what God says to believe,

  75. and to do what God says to do.

  76. The result will be that

  77. we will do what Paul talks about

  78. in Philippians chapter 1, verse 27.

    Philippians 1:27

  79. We'll live a life worthy of the gospel.

  80. We'll actually live like Christians,

  81. is what he's talking about.

  82. Turn with me, if you would,

  83. to Philippians chapter 1,

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  84. where we've been now for several weeks.

  85. We're moving on today,

  86. in verses 27 through 30.

  87. He actually tells us,

  88. calls us,

  89. live a life worthy of the gospel.

  90. He's saying,

  91. live like a Christian.

  92. Live like the Christian you are,

  93. who has been changed by God.

  94. Let's read it.

  95. Philippians 1, 27.

  96. Only let your manner of life

  97. be worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  98. So that whether I come and see you

  99. or am absent,

  100. I may hear of you,

  101. that you are standing firm

  102. in one spirit with one mind,

  103. striving side by side

  104. for the faith of the gospel,

  105. and not frightened in anything

  106. by your opponents.

  107. This is a clear sign to them

  108. of their destruction,

  109. but of your salvation,

  110. and that from God.

  111. For it has been granted to you

  112. that for the sake of Christ,

  113. you should not only believe in Him,

  114. but also suffer for His sake.

  115. Engage in the same conflict

  116. that you saw I had.

  117. Read Acts chapter 16,

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  118. and you'll read how Paul,

  119. when he first went to the city of Philippi,

  120. some things happened.

  121. A mob turned against him,

  122. beat him,

  123. threw him in jail,

  124. and for all practical purposes,

  125. ran him out of town.

  126. That's what he's taught.

  127. They knew that.

  128. Engage in the same conflict

  129. that you saw I had,

  130. and now hear that I have.

  131. Now he's in prison in Rome,

  132. waiting to be tried before Caesar.

  133. They know that.

  134. I want you to look at these verses

  135. and see what it means

  136. to live a life worthy of the gospel

  137. and how that will affect

  138. our relationships here in the church

  139. and even relationships outside the church

  140. with people who do not believe like we believe

  141. or even oppose us.

  142. So let's think.

  143. We live worthy of the gospel.

  144. Number one,

  145. we will demonstrate how Christ

  146. has made a difference in our lives.

  147. If we really live like Christians,

  148. we will demonstrate

  149. by the way that we live in this world

  150. and interact with people,

  151. we'll demonstrate

  152. that the Lord has made a difference in us

  153. when He saved us,

  154. when He put His Spirit in us.

  155. I want you to look at the first part of verse 27.

  156. He says,

  157. Only let your manner of life

  158. be worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  159. Most commentators talk about

  160. how this is a difficult phrase to translate

  161. and show us just how strongly

  162. Paul is calling us

  163. to live a faithful Christian life.

  164. Here's the problem.

  165. He is writing to people

  166. who live in the city of Philippi.

  167. Philippi had been made years earlier

  168. a Roman colony.

  169. The people who lived in that place

  170. were made Roman citizens

  171. with many privileges

  172. that people around them did not have.

  173. After that,

  174. everyone born into that city

  175. was a Roman citizen.

  176. It was a privileged status.

  177. And the people who lived there,

  178. they knew,

  179. we are something.

  180. And I'm not talking about

  181. just terrible pride,

  182. kind of arrogance,

  183. condescension,

  184. but they just knew,

  185. we are citizens of Philippi.

  186. That does make us special.

  187. And they took pride

  188. in living like a citizen of Philippi.

  189. Well, what Paul is trying to do,

  190. he's got that in his mind.

  191. And so he's telling

  192. these Philippian Christians

  193. who understand

  194. the privilege they have

  195. of being citizens,

  196. he's saying now,

  197. you live like a citizen of heaven.

  198. He even uses that phrase

  199. specifically later on

  200. in chapter 3.

  201. You live like a citizen of heaven.

  202. You go all out

  203. to live up to

  204. who you are

  205. as a Christian.

  206. A New Testament commentator

  207. by the name of Moises Silva

  208. tries to point this out

  209. in his translation

  210. of that phrase

  211. in verse 27.

  212. He says,

  213. What really matters

  214. is that you behave

  215. as citizens of heaven

  216. in a manner worthy

  217. of the gospel of Christ.

  218. Now,

  219. the idea of living

  220. in a manner

  221. worthy of the gospel of Christ

  222. or worthy of our salvation,

  223. Paul's not saying

  224. you make yourself worthy.

  225. Everything about our salvation

  226. is due to God's grace.

  227. It has nothing to do

  228. with what we have done

  229. or with our own good works

  230. or anything like that.

  231. One of the best verses

  232. that describes

  233. how we owe everything

  234. about our salvation to God

  235. is the verse we read earlier

  236. from Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  237. Look at it.

  238. For by grace

  239. you have been saved

  240. through faith

  241. and this is not

  242. your own doing.

  243. Grace is a gift from God.

  244. Your salvation

  245. is a work of God.

  246. Faith itself

  247. is a gift from God.

  248. This is not your own doing,

  249. none of it.

  250. It is the gift of God

  251. not a result of works

  252. so that no one may boast.

  253. Paul is calling us

  254. to demonstrate

  255. the change

  256. that God has brought about

  257. in our lives

  258. as a result of us

  259. believing the gospel.

  260. And when we put our faith

  261. in Jesus

  262. for our salvation,

  263. the Spirit of God

  264. comes to live within us

  265. and brings about

  266. from that moment on

  267. change

  268. as He makes us

  269. more and more

  270. like Jesus.

  271. And we've talked about this before

  272. in terms of character

  273. especially.

  274. Now,

  275. in this passage

  276. Paul talks about

  277. some of the ways

  278. that God changes us.

  279. So let's look at

  280. some of the ways

  281. that we ought to demonstrate

  282. that we're Christians.

  283. Number one,

  284. we will be united.

  285. Paul says that he wants

  286. to hear,

  287. look at this,

  288. verse 27,

  289. that you are standing firm

  290. in one spirit

  291. with one mind

  292. striving side by side

  293. for the faith of the gospel.

  294. The gospel

  295. has a way of uniting us

  296. when we believe

  297. we're regenerated.

  298. We're united to God

  299. in a special relationship.

  300. But we're also united

  301. to one another

  302. in a very special relationship.

  303. brothers and sisters

  304. in Christ.

  305. What he's telling us

  306. here is

  307. as members of the family

  308. of God

  309. we've got to put forth

  310. effort.

  311. As he says here

  312. we've got to put forth

  313. effort to stand firm

  314. in one spirit.

  315. He's referring to the

  316. power of the Holy Spirit

  317. here

  318. and strive together

  319. to proclaim the gospel.

  320. I want you to think with me

  321. in light of what he's saying here.

  322. churches should be

  323. the most common

  324. and best examples

  325. in this country

  326. of how

  327. different people

  328. diverse people

  329. come together

  330. join together

  331. to live

  332. and work

  333. as one.

  334. But

  335. I guess

  336. at least

  337. most of us

  338. in this room

  339. we know that churches

  340. are not like that.

  341. churches are not

  342. models

  343. of diversity

  344. where people

  345. from all different

  346. kinds of backgrounds

  347. come together

  348. as one.

  349. Throughout this country

  350. as they meet

  351. today

  352. most

  353. not all

  354. but most churches

  355. will be made up

  356. of people

  357. who are very

  358. very similar

  359. of the same

  360. race

  361. of the same

  362. social class

  363. and other

  364. sameness.

  365. That's just about

  366. who most

  367. American churches

  368. are

  369. what they are.

  370. But you know

  371. there is

  372. a very popular

  373. diverse group

  374. found all

  375. over this

  376. country

  377. who

  378. stand firm

  379. and strive

  380. together

  381. for a common

  382. cause.

  383. College football

  384. teams

  385. NFL teams

  386. any sports

  387. team you could

  388. say but

  389. college football

  390. teams I want you

  391. to think

  392. and let's be

  393. more local

  394. as we think

  395. and let's

  396. have a little

  397. bit of diversity

  398. let's think about

  399. both Clemson

  400. and South Carolina.

  401. The Clemson

  402. and South Carolina

  403. football teams

  404. are made up

  405. of young men

  406. from very

  407. diverse

  408. backgrounds

  409. black

  410. and white

  411. high

  412. middle

  413. and low

  414. social

  415. classes

  416. conservative

  417. and liberal

  418. and I'm sure

  419. there are several

  420. other categories

  421. of differences

  422. that we could

  423. use here

  424. to describe this.

  425. These young

  426. men though

  427. despite their

  428. differences

  429. they choose

  430. to focus on

  431. the one

  432. thing

  433. that has

  434. brought them

  435. together

  436. that has

  437. united them

  438. that's playing

  439. football.

  440. They focus

  441. on playing

  442. football

  443. we're one

  444. team

  445. and they

  446. let the

  447. things that

  448. divide them

  449. be secondary.

  450. They're not

  451. primary.

  452. They're not

  453. going to be

  454. the emphasis

  455. of the team.

  456. I want you

  457. to think

  458. a lot of

  459. you keep

  460. up with

  461. year round

  462. your favorite

  463. football team

  464. you know

  465. they choose

  466. to support

  467. each other

  468. to play

  469. for each

  470. other

  471. and in more

  472. recent times

  473. more and more

  474. college football

  475. players are

  476. talking about

  477. how much

  478. they love

  479. one another.

  480. They love

  481. their brothers

  482. on that team

  483. and the

  484. result is

  485. most

  486. let's just

  487. say

  488. successful

  489. college

  490. football

  491. teams

  492. they become

  493. like brothers

  494. in a family.

  495. It's a

  496. football family

  497. but it truly

  498. is

  499. a family

  500. made up

  501. of people

  502. from all

  503. different walks

  504. of life.

  505. Now if

  506. athletes can

  507. come together

  508. like that

  509. Christians

  510. should

  511. absolutely

  512. be able

  513. to come

  514. together

  515. as one

  516. family

  517. the family

  518. of God

  519. because we

  520. have a

  521. unifying

  522. supernatural

  523. power

  524. to help

  525. us

  526. the power

  527. of the

  528. Holy Spirit

  529. who indwells

  530. us

  531. as individual

  532. Christians

  533. who will

  534. help us

  535. come together

  536. and see

  537. what we

  538. have in

  539. common

  540. and focus

  541. on what

  542. we have

  543. in

  544. common

  545. more than

  546. just our

  547. differences.

  548. Now

  549. I'm not

  550. emphasizing this

  551. because of a

  552. problem of

  553. disunity in

  554. our church

  555. that I'm

  556. aware of

  557. but

  558. we do

  559. need to

  560. work on

  561. maintaining

  562. or building

  563. close

  564. relationships

  565. with our

  566. church family

  567. members right

  568. now

  569. in light of

  570. the situation

  571. we find

  572. ourselves in.

  573. The

  574. coronavirus

  575. pandemic

  576. has hurt

  577. the fellowship

  578. of most

  579. churches

  580. because it

  581. has prevented

  582. us from

  583. being together

  584. from doing

  585. things together.

  586. You see how

  587. these seats

  588. are all spread

  589. out.

  590. We're supposed

  591. to try to

  592. stay six

  593. feet away

  594. from people

  595. outside of our

  596. immediate family.

  597. I don't say

  598. it every

  599. week but

  600. we've

  601. encouraged

  602. don't shake

  603. hands.

  604. By all

  605. means don't

  606. hug

  607. anybody.

  608. We went

  609. through a

  610. period of

  611. time where

  612. we didn't

  613. meet at

  614. all.

  615. We're not

  616. meeting in

  617. Sunday school

  618. now in

  619. small groups.

  620. We're

  621. discouraging

  622. that.

  623. There is a

  624. pandemic.

  625. The

  626. coronavirus is

  627. real.

  628. I don't

  629. care who

  630. thinks what

  631. in this

  632. room.

  633. In this

  634. room there

  635. are people

  636. who have

  637. had it

  638. and been

  639. very sick.

  640. There are

  641. members of

  642. our church

  643. whose

  644. parent or

  645. sibling has

  646. died from

  647. the coronavirus.

  648. It is

  649. real.

  650. And we

  651. need to do

  652. some of the

  653. things that

  654. we've done

  655. to try to

  656. avoid

  657. spreading it

  658. if somebody

  659. comes and

  660. they've got

  661. it.

  662. So we

  663. need to

  664. acknowledge

  665. there is a

  666. problem.

  667. There is a

  668. pandemic.

  669. We can't be

  670. together like

  671. we once

  672. were, like

  673. we want to

  674. be for

  675. right now.

  676. But what we

  677. can do is

  678. work on

  679. maintaining

  680. fellowship the

  681. best way

  682. that we

  683. can under

  684. these

  685. circumstances.

  686. You know,

  687. this is one

  688. of the things

  689. we've got to

  690. really work

  691. on when this

  692. whole thing's

  693. over.

  694. When they

  695. declare an

  696. end to the

  697. pandemic,

  698. when it's

  699. okay to

  700. just do

  701. life like

  702. we used

  703. to do

  704. life,

  705. we as a

  706. church,

  707. every church,

  708. not just our

  709. church,

  710. every church,

  711. we've got to

  712. really do

  713. some things

  714. to build

  715. unity,

  716. get back

  717. together,

  718. rekindle

  719. some

  720. relationships,

  721. rediscover

  722. how much

  723. we really

  724. do need

  725. one another.

  726. But in

  727. the meantime,

  728. probably all

  729. of us in

  730. this room,

  731. we need to

  732. make more

  733. phone calls,

  734. send more

  735. cards,

  736. emails,

  737. text messages,

  738. and whatever

  739. else we can

  740. do to

  741. maintain

  742. fellowship.

  743. Not just

  744. to stay in

  745. touch,

  746. but to

  747. have real

  748. meaningful

  749. relationships.

  750. If we

  751. live a

  752. life worthy

  753. of the

  754. gospel,

  755. if we

  756. truly live

  757. out our

  758. Christian

  759. faith,

  760. unity and

  761. fellowship

  762. will be

  763. something that

  764. we enjoy.

  765. Nobody will

  766. have to tell

  767. us we

  768. need that.

  769. We know

  770. that.

  771. We enjoy

  772. that.

  773. And we

  774. need to

  775. work at it.

  776. We need to

  777. work at it

  778. the best

  779. we can

  780. now under

  781. difficult

  782. circumstances,

  783. but in

  784. the days

  785. to come,

  786. we'll have

  787. to make

  788. it a

  789. priority.

  790. As a

  791. united

  792. family of

  793. God,

  794. we will

  795. advance the

  796. gospel.

  797. He says

  798. striving side

  799. by side

  800. for the

  801. faith of

  802. the gospel.

  803. The church

  804. exists to

  805. make disciples,

  806. to do the

  807. great commission.

  808. You know

  809. that.

  810. Part of

  811. that is

  812. doing

  813. evangelism,

  814. proclaiming the

  815. gospel,

  816. sharing the

  817. gospel,

  818. as well as

  819. helping people

  820. understand the

  821. truth of

  822. God's

  823. word and

  824. grow and

  825. mature in

  826. their own

  827. faith.

  828. Evangelism,

  829. witnessing,

  830. sharing the

  831. gospel,

  832. that is every

  833. Christian's

  834. responsibility.

  835. There's nothing

  836. in the Bible

  837. that says it

  838. is for a

  839. select few

  840. in the

  841. church.

  842. You know,

  843. over the

  844. years,

  845. I've put this

  846. on the

  847. screen many

  848. times.

  849. I've had a

  850. handout just

  851. like this

  852. many times

  853. on Sunday

  854. morning.

  855. We've done

  856. things on

  857. Sunday night.

  858. Wednesday

  859. night.

  860. As

  861. Christians,

  862. we need to

  863. understand that

  864. we have

  865. circles of

  866. influence in

  867. which some

  868. of the

  869. people that

  870. we know,

  871. we love,

  872. we work

  873. with,

  874. maybe in

  875. your family,

  876. they're not

  877. Christians.

  878. And God

  879. expects us,

  880. as people who

  881. know the

  882. Lord, as

  883. people who

  884. believe what

  885. the Bible

  886. says,

  887. that the

  888. only way to

  889. be right with

  890. God through

  891. faith in

  892. Jesus,

  893. God expects

  894. us to build

  895. the kind of

  896. relationships with

  897. these people

  898. that we can

  899. talk to them

  900. about things

  901. that matter.

  902. And at the

  903. top of that

  904. list should be

  905. their relationship

  906. with the Lord,

  907. be able to

  908. share the

  909. gospel with

  910. them.

  911. Over the past

  912. couple of years,

  913. Southern Baptists

  914. have had a sort of

  915. what you might call

  916. a denominational

  917. emphasis,

  918. where we as

  919. Christians are

  920. being asked,

  921. just share the

  922. gospel with one

  923. person this

  924. year.

  925. You remember,

  926. who is your

  927. one?

  928. I've preached

  929. on it,

  930. I think Jeff

  931. has,

  932. we've done

  933. things in

  934. Sunday school,

  935. but in the

  936. newsletter,

  937. tried to

  938. emphasize,

  939. as individuals,

  940. we need to

  941. think,

  942. who is one

  943. person in my

  944. life that's

  945. not a

  946. Christian,

  947. that I could

  948. zero in on

  949. to pray for,

  950. to develop my

  951. relationship with

  952. them,

  953. and to look for

  954. an opportunity to

  955. share the gospel

  956. with them.

  957. Who is your

  958. one?

  959. And have you

  960. shared the gospel

  961. with that person?

  962. If you have it,

  963. are you still

  964. working on it?

  965. Trying to

  966. develop your

  967. relationship in

  968. such a way that

  969. it'll just be

  970. natural for you

  971. to talk with

  972. them about

  973. things that are

  974. serious,

  975. like,

  976. their

  977. relationship

  978. with the

  979. Lord.

  980. Now,

  981. I want to go

  982. back to the

  983. idea of the

  984. church being

  985. a diverse

  986. group of

  987. people.

  988. What I do

  989. not mean is

  990. this.

  991. We should

  992. not,

  993. as a church,

  994. target

  995. different

  996. kinds of

  997. people,

  998. and make

  999. it our

  1000. goal to

  1001. go after

  1002. them,

  1003. so that

  1004. we'll be

  1005. a more

  1006. diverse

  1007. church.

  1008. We do

  1009. not need

  1010. to target

  1011. the black

  1012. community,

  1013. the Hispanic

  1014. community,

  1015. a rich

  1016. community,

  1017. a poor

  1018. community,

  1019. and try to

  1020. reach people

  1021. from outside

  1022. our white

  1023. middle class

  1024. group,

  1025. and just

  1026. make our

  1027. church more

  1028. diverse.

  1029. That's not

  1030. the way to

  1031. do it.

  1032. that is

  1033. not going

  1034. to work.

  1035. I had a

  1036. black pastor

  1037. I heard

  1038. one time,

  1039. Votie

  1040. Bauckham,

  1041. really a

  1042. nationally

  1043. known

  1044. pastor,

  1045. who has

  1046. said,

  1047. that's not

  1048. what the

  1049. church needs

  1050. to do

  1051. today.

  1052. Here's two

  1053. ways we

  1054. need to

  1055. approach the

  1056. idea of

  1057. diversity,

  1058. in terms of

  1059. being a

  1060. church that

  1061. includes

  1062. everybody.

  1063. Number one,

  1064. we must do

  1065. our best to

  1066. be a church

  1067. that welcomes

  1068. every single

  1069. person that

  1070. walks through

  1071. our doors,

  1072. regardless of

  1073. their race,

  1074. social class,

  1075. or any other

  1076. difference.

  1077. We need to

  1078. be, as

  1079. individuals and

  1080. collectively as a

  1081. church family,

  1082. we need to have

  1083. the mindset that

  1084. anyone who

  1085. walks in that

  1086. door, if

  1087. they're a

  1088. Christian, they're

  1089. our brother or

  1090. sister in

  1091. Christ, and we

  1092. embrace them.

  1093. We need to

  1094. have the

  1095. mindset, anybody

  1096. that walks in

  1097. that door, and

  1098. if they're not a

  1099. Christian, they

  1100. are a human

  1101. being for whom

  1102. Jesus died, and

  1103. if they don't

  1104. come to know

  1105. the Lord, they're

  1106. going to spend

  1107. eternity in

  1108. hell.

  1109. And we should

  1110. care enough about

  1111. them, regardless

  1112. of what they

  1113. look like, sound

  1114. like, that we

  1115. want to embrace

  1116. them, welcome

  1117. them, make

  1118. them feel at

  1119. home, and share

  1120. our lives with

  1121. them, and most

  1122. important is to

  1123. share the gospel

  1124. with them so

  1125. that they'll be

  1126. saved.

1127. We need to be a

  1128. church that

  1129. welcomes everyone,

  1130. and I mean

  1131. genuinely.

  1132. Whoever walks in

  1133. that door, regardless

  1134. of how different

  1135. they are than me,

  1136. I'm glad they're

  1137. here.

  1138. I smile.

  1139. I welcome them,

  1140. and I mean it.

  1141. Number two, we

  1142. must start inviting

  1143. our friends and

  1144. acquaintances from

  1145. work, from school,

  1146. or the neighborhood

  1147. or wherever to

  1148. come to church with

  1149. us, regardless of

  1150. their race, social

  1151. class, or any

  1152. difference.

1153. In this room, a lot

  1154. of people in here,

  1155. you who go to

  1156. school with, you

  1157. work with, or in

  1158. your neighborhood are

  1159. people who are very

  1160. different than the

  1161. majority of members

  1162. of this church.

1163. We need to have the

  1164. mindset, if we're

  1165. going to be

  1166. witnesses, if we're

  1167. going to take

  1168. seriously the people

  1169. in our circles of

  1170. influence who are not

  1171. Christians, we need

  1172. to look at them,

  1173. build relationships

  1174. with them, no

  1175. matter how different

  1176. they are, invite

  1177. them to come with

  1178. us to this church,

  1179. church.

  1180. And all of us

  1181. who are here, we're

  1182. going to embrace

  1183. them.

  1184. That's the most

  1185. logical way that

  1186. our church would

  1187. become more

  1188. diverse.

  1189. We're open, we're

  1190. receptive, we're

  1191. wanting whoever God

  1192. brings, and we'll

  1193. welcome them to

  1194. open arms.

  1195. But also, we're

  1196. going to share the

  1197. gospel with whoever

  1198. God puts in our

  1199. life.

  1200. Friends that are

  1201. very different.

  1202. We're going to at

  1203. least invite them,

  1204. bring them with us.

  1205. And some of them

  1206. very well may become

1207. a real active part of

  1208. our church family.

  1209. It might make us

  1210. uncomfortable.

  1211. So what?

  1212. There's a lot of

  1213. things in life that

  1214. make us uncomfortable.

  1215. That doesn't matter.

1216. Now, I want to make

  1217. this statement since

  1218. we're on this subject.

1219. I do not have any

  1220. person in mind.

  1221. I have not heard

  1222. anything.

  1223. I've not heard

  1224. anything implied.

  1225. Nobody's said

  1226. anything to me about

  1227. anything like this.

  1228. This is just an

  1229. appropriate time to do

  1230. it.

1231. I've done it in the

  1232. past, but I've never

  1233. done it lately.

  1234. So I think it's very

  1235. important.

  1236. If there is one

  1237. person who I'd have a

1238. problem, I want to say

  1239. it this way.

1240. We cannot be a church

1241. of Jesus Christ and not

  1242. welcome every human

  1243. being who walks in

  1244. that door.

1245. And if anybody in this

  1246. church has a problem

  1247. with welcoming

  1248. everyone, you leave.

1249. You're not going to be

  1250. a stumbling block.

1251. We are going to be the

  1252. family of God called

  1253. Pickens First Baptist

  1254. Church who welcomes

  1255. everybody.

  1256. And I know for a

  1257. fact 99% of our

  1258. church family feels

  1259. that way.

1260. But if there's one or

1261. two that do not, you

  1262. got the problem.

1263. And you will not make

1264. us have a problem over

  1265. that.

  1266. I have no target.

1267. But if I hit the

  1268. bull's eye somewhere

  1269. this morning, I mean

  1270. it.

1271. But I want you to

  1272. know if you're a

  1273. visitor, you're not a

  1274. part of our church

  1275. family.

  1276. We've never had

  1277. issues over this.

  1278. Our church would not

  1279. tolerate something like

  1280. this.

  1281. But I do think it's

1282. good from time to time

  1283. knowing human nature

  1284. to bring it up.

  1285. And just clarify

  1286. things.

  1287. And from the past,

  1288. when I've said some

  1289. things like this,

  1290. I've had a lot of

  1291. affirmation in saying

  1292. things like this.

  1293. Because this is who

1294. our church as a whole,

  1295. 99%, if not 100%,

  1296. wants us to be.

  1297. Now, another change

  1298. the gospel brings

  1299. means we will stand

  1300. unafraid against our

  1301. enemies.

  1302. Look at verse 28.

  1303. And not frightened in

  1304. anything by your

  1305. opponents.

  1306. People of the world

  1307. who do not believe,

  1308. who don't care about

  1309. God, who hate God

  1310. even, they oppose the

  1311. gospel for many reasons.

  1312. One reason is contrary

  1313. to their self-centered

  1314. way of living.

1315. And for some of them,

  1316. the things that the

  1317. Bible teaches,

1318. it declares them to be

  1319. immoral.

1320. And they don't like that.

  1321. And so, they oppose

1322. the truth of God's word.

1323. And for us, most of us

  1324. in this room know,

  1325. in this world today,

  1326. people do not embrace

  1327. the idea that there's

1328. only one way to be

  1329. right with God,

  1330. that's through faith in

  1331. Jesus Christ.

  1332. That's what the Bible

  1333. says.

1334. Jesus said, I am the

1335. way, the truth, and the

  1336. life.

1337. No one comes to the

  1338. Father except through

  1339. me.

  1340. But when we really

  1341. believe that and

  1342. witness, share the

  1343. gospel, and tell people

  1344. because, you know, we

  1345. love them, that's not

1346. the way they can be

  1347. right with God, we're

  1348. called intolerant.

1349. And we're out of step

1350. with the way things are

1351. in this world today, to

1352. be so inclusive and to

  1353. never say there's just

  1354. one way of anything.

  1355. In today's world, many

  1356. people are quick to

  1357. condemn Christianity and

  1358. to hatefully attack

  1359. Christians.

  1360. And it's happening more

  1361. and more.

1362. But we are called as

  1363. God's people to stand

1364. firm in our faith no

  1365. matter what.

1366. Now, as we show the

  1367. world the difference

1368. Christ has made, as we

1369. do stand firm, we will

  1370. influence others.

  1371. Look at this.

1372. Our stand for Christ will

1373. be a sign of judgment

  1374. to unbelievers.

1375. He says in verse 28,

1376. this is a clear sign to

  1377. them of their destruction.

1378. I want you to think.

1379. When we stand firm in

  1380. our faith, I mean

  1381. graciously, appropriately.

  1382. Not being mean-spirited

  1383. jerks, but graciously and

  1384. appropriately.

  1385. We stand firm.

1386. God will use that to cause

1387. some people to think there

1388. may be something to this.

  1389. Why else would that

  1390. person be ridiculed?

  1391. Why else would that

  1392. person be ostracized by

  1393. standing for what they

  1394. believe?

  1395. There must be something

  1396. to it.

1397. And they may be convicted

1398. or at least become open to

  1399. inquiring about the truth.

  1400. So standing firm on

  1401. biblical convictions,

  1402. on biblical convictions

1403. the right way, is one of

1404. the ways that God warns

  1405. unbelievers.

  1406. Let's look at this.

1407. Our stand for Christ will

1408. also be a sign of assurance

  1409. for Christians.

1410. He says this is a clear

  1411. sign of your salvation

  1412. and that from God.

  1413. Standing firm in our

  1414. faith is something that

1415. God will use to give us

  1416. assurance.

  1417. If you're truly a

  1418. Christian, you truly believe

1419. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

1420. when you make those hard

  1421. decisions to stand firm

  1422. against the crowd,

1423. God's going to affirm you.

1424. He's going to give you

  1425. real assurance, not only

  1426. that you're His, but you're

  1427. doing the right thing.

  1428. Our faithfulness also

  1429. encourages some of our

  1430. Christian brothers and

1431. sisters to stand firm, to

1432. be faithful, and to trust

  1433. God.

1434. You know, there could be

1435. somebody in your life right

1436. now, and they need for you

1437. where you work, or at

  1438. school, or somewhere out

  1439. away from church.

1440. There may be some people

1441. in your life right now,

1442. they really need for you to

  1443. stand strong as a

  1444. Christian.

1445. Not be afraid, not back

  1446. down.

  1447. Right now, they're timid,

  1448. they're sort of reserved,

  1449. they're afraid, but they

1450. would be encouraged by your

  1451. strong example.

  1452. Be that person.

1453. Now, one thing the Bible

  1454. never promises is that

  1455. living a faithful Christian

  1456. life will be easy.

  1457. It is not.

1458. The Bible says this is going

  1459. to be hard.

1460. Look at the last point here.

1461. We will suffer as we seek

  1462. to live for Christ.

1463. Paul speaks of this as,

1464. think about this, a privilege,

  1465. a gift from God.

1466. Verse 29, for it has been

1467. granted to you that for the

1468. sake of Christ, you should not

1469. only believe in Him, but also

  1470. suffer for His sake.

1471. Suffering for the Lord is not

1472. something Paul made up because

1473. he did it so much.

1474. Paul learned it from experience

1475. for sure, but that's what

  1476. Jesus taught.

  1477. Look at this.

1478. Jesus said, if anyone will

1479. come after me, let him deny

1480. himself, take up his cross.

1481. That's an instrument of death.

  1482. Let him deny himself.

  1483. Die to himself even.

  1484. To follow me.

1485. The commitment we've got to

  1486. make.

1487. And then after the apostles

  1488. experienced their first

  1489. beating for preaching the

1490. gospel when they were told not

1491. to, look at what they said.

1492. They left the court rejoicing

1493. because they had been counted

  1494. worthy of suffering disgrace

  1495. for the name.

1496. The idea of suffering as

  1497. Christians, it does sound

  1498. strange to us because

  1499. thankfully in this country

  1500. Christians have not suffered

  1501. physically like in some

  1502. countries where they're

  1503. imprisoned, they're beaten

1504. today, killed for their faith.

1505. We should be thankful that we

1506. have not experienced that in

1507. our country, in our lifetimes,

1508. in the history of our country.

1509. But sometimes we all are, we are

1510. called to suffer for doing the

  1511. right thing in difficult

  1512. circumstances.

1513. You know, it may be that if you

1514. refuse to lie or be dishonest in

1515. performing your job, it will cost you

  1516. something.

  1517. It'll cost you advancement.

1518. Or it could cost you a demotion.

1519. It could cost you even your job.

1520. It sometimes costs us to be

1521. faithful in serving the Lord in

  1522. our church.

1523. Sometimes it costs us time.

1524. I mean, we sacrifice time.

  1525. Money.

1526. We sacrifice our energy when we're

  1527. tired.

1528. Sacrifice sleep sometimes maybe even.

1529. These things are not much compared

1530. to the suffering Paul's talking

  1531. about, I know.

1532. But what I want us to know in this

1533. room today, suffering for Christ

  1534. doesn't always mean life-threatening

  1535. danger.

  1536. Here's what we've got to understand.

1537. If we live our lives worthy of the

1538. gospel, it will require some degree of

  1539. suffering at times.

1540. The Christian life, live faithfully,

1541. cannot be just a cakewalk seven days

1542. a week, 365 days a year, year in and

  1543. year out.

  1544. It cannot be.

1545. The New Testament says it won't be.

1546. The Christian life, I want us to

1547. understand, it's not about knowing the

1548. right things, just believing the right

  1549. truths.

1550. It involves acting on what we know and

  1551. what we believe.

  1552. Final thought.

1553. The gospel makes a difference in the

1554. lives of everyone who believes it.

1555. As you look at your life, is it obvious

1556. that you believe the gospel?

  1557. Let's pray.

1558. Dear God, help us to see the truth about

  1559. ourselves.

1560. Help us to understand from what we're

1561. seeing in this passage this morning,

1562. dear God, that it will show if we're

  1563. Christians.

1564. It will show in our unity.

1565. It will show in our willing to stand

  1566. firm, tough, difficult situations.

1567. Help us to see that we will not shrink

1568. before our enemies, the enemies of

  1569. yours.

1570. Help us just to see, Father, some of the

1571. things that we've looked at in this

1572. passage or things you bring to mind

1573. right now to a Christian in this room.

1574. Help them to understand what it means

  1575. to be a Christian.

1576. The cost involved, the suffering that

  1577. sometimes comes.

1578. Lord, don't let anyone in this room who

1579. is a church member, been baptized, just

1580. professed to be a Christian for many

  1581. years.

1582. Don't let anyone leave here deceived

  1583. deceived that they're a Christian when

  1584. they're not.

1585. Help us to see, dear God, that there

1586. will be evidence in every one of our

1587. lives if we've been born again by the

  1588. Spirit of God.

1589. Make it clear that we've just seen a few

1590. of the things that will be true about

  1591. real Christians.

1592. Father, if there are people in this room

1593. who've been convicted that they are not

1594. true believers, help them to admit that

1595. totally, humbly to you right now.

  1596. Turn from their sin.

  1597. Truly repent.

  1598. Change their mind.

1599. Hate their sin and turn from it.

1600. Help them to truly understand that when

1601. Jesus died on the cross, He paid the

  1602. penalty for their sins.

1603. Help them, dear God, to trust Jesus this

1604. way, to call upon Him to save them now.

1605. Let's just, in an attitude of prayer,

1606. listen to the Lord, respond to Him

1607. personally, individually, as you know

  1608. you need to do.

  1609. Amen.
