  1. If you were asked to describe the church

  2. and base it on what you know the New Testament says about the church,

  3. how the New Testament pictures the church,

  4. how would you describe it?

  5. What kind of picture, image would you use to describe the church?

  6. Tell me something.

  7. It's people.

  8. The church is people.

  9. That's a good main point to start with.

  10. What are we in the New Testament?

  11. Huh?

  12. Unified, all right.

  13. The church is people.

  14. The church is to be unified.

  15. And two of the main ways that the New Testament describes the unity of God's people,

  16. the New Testament describes the church as the family of God and the body of Christ.

  17. I want you to think with me about what these pictures are about.

  18. The New Testament pictures the body, the church is the body of Christ in several places.

  19. In Ephesians, Paul talks about some of this, but primarily in Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12.

  20. In fact, in 1 Corinthians 12, Paul sort of paints a picture for us to think of the individual members of the church

  21. as body parts, parts of the body.

  22. For an example, he illustrates this by showing how our eyes, our ears, our hands,

  23. they're different parts of the body, do different things.

  24. But each is vitally important, and they all work together to accomplish important functions of the body.

  25. So, the idea of the church being the body of Christ means we need to learn to value each other

  26. and our differences, our gifts, our talents, our abilities.

  27. And we need to learn to work together in unity as one body.

  28. We're different.

  29. We bring different things to the table.

  30. But we work together as one body.

  31. We work together in a healthy way.

  32. Now, the idea of the church being the family of God may be the most familiar.

  33. In John's Gospel, he tells us that all who believe in Jesus become children of God.

  34. In fact, John, in his Gospel and in his letters, he likes to talk about Christians,

  35. members of the church, being children of God.

  36. Jesus taught us to address God as our Father.

  37. We know the Lord's Prayer.

  38. Well, that's Jesus' way of teaching us.

  39. We need to think of God as, we're Christians now, as our Father.

  40. Then the New Testament repeatedly calls members of the church brothers and sisters.

  41. So, the idea of the church being the family of God means we need to learn to love one another

  42. like a spiritual family and live together in unity so that we'll be a healthy family.

  43. Now, I want to pause right here and say, as we go through this, we're going to apply it mainly to the church.

  44. The idea we're the family of God.

  45. We talk about being a family as Pickens First Baptist Church.

  46. That's what the passage is going to direct us to.

  47. But where you can, I want you to apply this to your home, your family.

  48. We're going to learn some things that will help us to have closer families, more loving families in the right kind of way.

  49. And recognize that everybody in the family is different.

  50. We have different ways we look at different things, but we come together in oneness and unity as a family.

  51. Now, I want you to answer two questions just to yourself honestly.

  52. Do you appreciate the gifts, talents, and abilities of the members of this church?

  53. And especially those whose gifts, talents, and abilities are different from yours.

  54. And do you work together with members of this church who are different from you?

  55. Do you work together in some kind of ministry of our church?

  56. And together, we actually accomplish what God wants us to do.

  57. Think about that.

  58. Do you do that?

  59. And then the second question is this.

  60. Do you think of the members of this church as your close family members, spiritual family members?

  61. As you just look around right here in this room right now, as you just look around and you see different members of this church,

  62. do you think in terms of that's my sister, that's my brother in Christ.

  63. We have this family relationship in the church.

  64. Now, I believe that most American Christians like us think more in terms of our spiritual lives and everything about it in an individualistic kind of way.

  65. Here's what I'm talking about.

  66. When you think about your relationship with God, your spiritual life, don't you think more in terms of your relationship with God, your Heavenly Father,

  67. your relationship with Jesus as your Savior and Lord,

  68. and then far below that or even sort of separate from that,

  69. you think about relationships with people in the church.

  70. Now, certainly, the most important relationship is our relationship with God and the Lord Jesus.

  71. I don't mean to imply that it's not.

  72. But in the New Testament, in the church at Philippi that we're looking at right now,

  73. they truly saw themselves as a spiritual family.

  74. They were close.

  75. They were like an island of a Christian family in an ocean of pagans and unbelievers

  76. that you read about in Acts 16.

  77. The unbelievers in Philippi, they violently opposed Paul and his preaching.

  78. They had a riot in the city.

  79. They had him beaten and put in jail and eventually ran him out of town.

  80. And so, as these Philippian Christians, as New Testament Christians,

  81. most of them, as they thought about who they were spiritually,

  82. certainly they thought about their relationship with God, their relationship with Jesus,

  83. but at the same time, they thought about their relationships with one another.

  84. It just all went together.

  85. They weren't just individual Christians.

  86. They were members of God's family.

  87. They were members of the body of Christ.

  88. I want us just for a minute here to use the picture of being the family of God

  89. to make the point I'm talking about that we don't really, as American Christians,

  90. think of it like people in other parts of the world,

  91. especially New Testament Christians.

  92. Most of us in this room, we have at least some meaningful relationships with Christians in this church.

  93. You have people in your life right here.

  94. They're a part of your life.

  95. You pray for them, especially about things that you know,

  96. their situation, they need prayer.

  97. You're there to help them.

  98. You'll help to meet a need that you know that they have.

  99. But do you really think of them like your brothers, your sisters?

  100. There's that kind of bond, that kind of closeness.

  101. Now, I say all of this to say,

  102. today's passage of Scripture finds Paul calling the members of the Philippian church

  103. to a depth of Christian unity that is far deeper than what most of us have ever experienced for sure

  104. and maybe even much deeper than we can even understand.

  105. Read with me if you would.

  106. Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  107. We're going through the book of Philippians now.

  108. We'll finish chapter 1.

  109. Chapter 2.

  110. So, if there is any encouragement in Christ,

  111. any comfort from love,

  112. any participation in the Spirit,

  113. any affection and sympathy,

  114. complete my joy by being of the same mind,

  115. having the same love,

  116. being in full accord and of one mind.

  117. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit,

  118. but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

  119. Let each of you look not only to his own interests,

  120. but also to the interests of others.

  121. We're going to look at this in two parts,

  122. verses 1 and 2 today,

  123. verses 3 and 4 next week.

  124. But before we actually get into this study,

  125. I want us to pray and ask God to do two things.

  126. Let's ask God to help us to understand

  127. the depth of true Christian unity like a family.

  128. Number two,

  129. let's ask God to help us to desire

  130. and then develop this kind of unity,

  131. oneness, family atmosphere here in this church.

  132. Let's pray together.

  133. Dear God,

  134. we are thankful that

  135. as we look at this passage,

  136. we're not looking at it as a

  137. corrective to

  138. great division in our church.

  139. We thank you, Father,

  140. for the way you have blessed us

  141. to avoid

  142. a lot of conflict and controversy

  143. over many, many years.

  144. But Lord,

  145. help us to see

  146. as we look at this passage

  147. that Christian unity,

  148. fellowship,

  149. oneness

  150. is an important part of

  151. living life in this world.

  152. Help us,

  153. first of all,

  154. to understand

  155. that being Christians

  156. joined together in Christ,

  157. joined together in this

  158. church family,

  159. we should be developing

  160. close,

  161. family-like relationships.

  162. Father,

  163. give us that kind of desire.

  164. Help us to understand it.

  165. Help us to desire it.

  166. Help us to put forth the effort

  167. to enjoy it.

  168. In Jesus' name we pray.

  169. Amen.

  170. Paul is calling us here

  171. to a deeper and stronger level

  172. of Christian oneness,

  173. unity.

  174. Let's look at it.

  175. Number one,

  176. to experience true Christian unity,

  177. we must build upon

  178. some common Christian experiences.

  179. Look at what he says

  180. in verse one.

  181. So if there is any encouragement

  182. in Christ,

  183. any comfort from His love,

  184. any participation in the Spirit,

  185. any affection and sympathy,

  186. then He wants you to be united.

  187. Now the word so there,

  188. he begins so,

  189. could be translated therefore.

  190. That's how the NIV translates it.

  191. Paul's building on

  192. what he's just said

  193. in chapter one,

  194. verses 27 through 30

  195. that we looked at last week.

  196. I want you to notice

  197. two verses

  198. or chapter,

  199. verse 27,

  200. part of verse 28.

  201. Look at this.

  202. Only let your manner of life

  203. be worthy of the gospel

  204. so that whether I come

  205. and see you or am absent,

  206. I may hear of you

  207. that you are standing firm

  208. in one spirit

  209. with one mind,

  210. striving side by side

  211. for the faith of the gospel

  212. and not frightened

  213. in anything

  214. by your opponents.

  215. What we saw last week

  216. was Paul's call

  217. to the church.

  218. You've got to be united.

  219. You've really got to draw together

  220. to stand together

  221. against all these people

  222. everywhere you look

  223. who oppose you,

  224. who oppose everything

  225. you stand for.

  226. Christian unity is important.

  227. The unity of the church

  228. is important

  229. as we face

  230. a hostile world.

  231. But what he's talking about now

  232. is he dealt with that

  233. and now he's looking

  234. inside the church

  235. and he's thinking

  236. this is a good church.

  237. This church is overall

  238. pretty together.

  239. They're the most supportive

  240. of Paul.

  241. He is the most positive

  242. in this letter

  243. than any church

  244. he writes to.

  245. It's a good situation.

  246. It's not just,

  247. you know,

  248. about to split

  249. like the church

  250. at Corinth

  251. that you read about

  252. in 1 and 2 Corinthians.

  253. But he knows

  254. there are some issues.

  255. And so he's writing this

  256. to strengthen their unity

  257. in spite of the,

  258. you know,

  259. the underlying problems.

  260. For example,

  261. he's going to address

  262. later in the letter

  263. in chapter 4

  264. a problem that he knows

  265. exists between two women.

  266. Look at this,

  267. chapter 4 verse 2.

  268. I entreat,

  269. I urge,

  270. or plead with Euodia

  271. and I entreat Syntyche

  272. to agree in the Lord.

  273. Now I want you to think,

  274. Paul writes this letter

  275. to the church

  276. with the eye to understanding

  277. it's going to be read

  278. to the whole congregation.

  279. And as this letter is read,

  280. think about it.

  281. It's like he says to,

  282. in front of the whole church,

  283. it'd be like me

  284. saying to the whole church,

  285. I plead with Elaine

  286. and I plead with Lisa.

  287. Get along.

  288. Work out your problems.

  289. This is not good.

  290. That's awful, isn't it?

  291. That's awful to have

  292. your name called

  293. because you're causing

  294. division in the church.

  295. But he did it

  296. because that's how concerned

  297. he was that this church

  298. that was on solid ground

  299. stay that way.

  300. As Barney Fife would say,

  301. he's nipping it in the bud.

  302. He's not going to let it

  303. get out of hand

  304. that it could.

  305. So he begins

  306. calling them

  307. to this deeper level

  308. of unity

  309. by reminding them

  310. of some of the things

  311. they have in common.

  312. That's what verse 1

  313. is all about.

  314. The word if here

  315. at the beginning

  316. does not mean

  317. there's a question.

  318. It's sort of like

  319. a rhetorical kind of question.

  320. It could be translated

  321. since these things are true

  322. or because these things are true.

  323. I want you to look

  324. real quick in verse 1

  325. at some of the things

  326. that we all have in common

  327. if we're Christians.

  328. Here's the idea.

  329. Every one of us

  330. in this room

  331. who are Christians

  332. and members of this church

  333. we share some of the

  334. same spiritual experiences

  335. in our relationship

  336. with God.

  337. He's going to call out

  338. or bring to light

  339. four of them.

  340. I'm going to use

  341. the phrases that he uses.

  342. Encouragement in Christ.

  343. We all have experienced

  344. encouragement.

  345. It can be translated

  346. comfort

  347. as a result

  348. of our relationship

  349. with the Lord.

  350. You being a Christian

  351. you having a relationship

  352. with the Lord

  353. talking to him in prayer

  354. just sensing his spirit

  355. within you

  356. you know what it's like

  357. to have the assurance

  358. that maybe

  359. that you're forgiven

  360. that you're right with God

  361. you're a child of God.

  362. If you die

  363. you'll go to heaven.

  364. We all

  365. if we're Christians

  366. we have that.

  367. Number two

  368. any comfort from love.

  369. Now the first thing

  370. Paul said

  371. is the encouragement

  372. in Christ.

  373. The third thing

  374. he says is

  375. is fellowship

  376. in the spirit.

  377. This may be a reference

  378. to the love of God

  379. and he's trying

  380. to get us to think

  381. in terms of how

  382. each member of the Trinity

  383. the Father, Son

  384. and Holy Spirit

  385. help us

  386. in our lives.

  387. But either way

  388. as Christians

  389. we all have experienced

  390. comfort

  391. knowing that God

  392. loves us.

  393. Or if he's talking

  394. about the love

  395. within the church

  396. even

  397. we've experienced

  398. that from other people

  399. if we're members

  400. of the church

  401. and involved

  402. in any way.

  403. So all of us

  404. there are times

  405. in our lives

  406. when we have experienced

  407. God doing

  408. some things in us

  409. just to assure us

  410. of his love

  411. and that nothing

  412. can take us away

  413. from him.

  414. Third

  415. any participation

  416. in the spirit.

  417. He's describing

  418. how

  419. he's describing

  420. a Christian fellowship

  421. as a result

  422. of the Holy Spirit

  423. working in us

  424. when he saved us.

  425. When we were born again

  426. the spirit of God

  427. brought about

  428. brings about

  429. a new nature

  430. in us

  431. and we

  432. are brothers

  433. and sisters

  434. in Christ

  435. whether we realize

  436. it or not

  437. and he helps us

  438. to have a special

  439. kind of fellowship

  440. if we'll develop it.

  441. We have this

  442. common experience.

  443. there's something

  444. within us

  445. that causes us

  446. to desire

  447. to have fellowship

  448. with other Christians.

  449. If you have that desire

  450. I want you to understand

  451. as a Christian

  452. other people

  453. in this room

  454. do too.

  455. Some more than others

  456. it's a common experience.

  457. Number four

  458. any affection

  459. and sympathy

  460. or compassion.

  461. As people

  462. who've been changed

  463. by God

  464. we have

  465. within us

  466. heartfelt

  467. tenderness

  468. and compassion

  469. for

  470. some people

  471. at some times.

  472. A person

  473. who is just

  474. cold hearted

  475. hard hearted

  476. all the time

  477. nothing softens them.

  478. They never have

  479. any compassion

  480. any sympathy

  481. for anybody.

  482. They can't be a Christian

  483. in whom the spirit

  484. of God lives.

  485. Every one of us

  486. in this room

  487. there are certain

  488. situations

  489. that people are

  490. involved in

  491. and it just

  492. gets to us.

  493. we sympathize

  494. we empathize

  495. with them.

  496. It breaks

  497. our heart

  498. for them.

  499. We show

  500. affection

  501. or compassion

  502. in certain ways

  503. being there

  504. helping them

  505. something like that.

  506. The point

  507. Paul is making

  508. here is

  509. every member

  510. of the church

  511. every Christian

  512. has these

  513. kinds

  514. of common

  515. experiences.

  516. I want you

  517. to sort of

  518. look around here

  519. it's easier

  520. to do

  521. with these

  522. chairs.

  523. Everybody

  524. in this room

  525. who are

  526. Christians

  527. despite

  528. their

  529. differences

  530. they have

  531. these kind

  532. of things

  533. in common.

  534. They've

  535. experienced

  536. what you've

  537. experienced

  538. in their

  539. relationship

  540. with God

  541. His love

  542. His grace

  543. they understand

  544. have a desire

  545. for a Christian

  546. fellowship

  547. we already

  548. have this

  549. in common.

  550. Now

  551. in verse 2

  552. let's start

  553. working on

  554. what strengthens

  555. our unity.

  556. By the way

  557. thinking about

  558. your home

  559. you and

  560. your spouse

  561. you and

  562. your children

  563. you and

  564. your parents

  565. hey

  566. even your

  567. brothers and

  568. sisters

  569. you've got

  570. a lot

  571. in common

  572. under that

  573. house.

  574. You're very

  575. different

  576. you're at

  577. different stages

  578. in life

  579. but I want

  580. you to think

  581. right now

  582. there is

  583. much that

  584. you share

  585. in common

  586. with your

  587. family members

  588. that you

  589. need to

  590. focus more

  591. on

  592. rather than

  593. just the

  594. differences

  595. that you

  596. see

  597. and maybe

  598. experience.

  599. Number 2

  600. to experience

  601. true Christian

  602. unity

  603. we must

  604. develop a

  605. common

  606. Christian

  607. mindset.

  608. Look at

  609. verse 2

  610. he says

  611. complete my

  612. joy by

  613. being of

  614. the same

  615. mind

  616. having the

  617. same

  618. love

  619. being in

  620. full

  621. accord

  622. and of

  623. one

  624. mind.

  625. I want

  626. you to know

  627. how Paul

  628. makes this

  629. appeal

  630. make my

  631. joy

  632. complete.

  633. He has a

  634. great relationship

  635. with these

  636. people.

  637. It's like

  638. he's saying

  639. we've got a

  640. great relationship

  641. it started

  642. off well

  643. we've

  644. continued

  645. well

  646. you have

  647. supported

  648. me

  649. I pray

  650. for you

  651. all the

  652. time

  653. we're

  654. close

  655. make my

  656. joy

  657. complete

  658. by listening

  659. and doing

  660. what we're

  661. talking about

  662. and then

  663. let's

  664. look at

  665. it.

  666. We need

  667. to have

  668. the same

  669. mind

  670. or be

  671. like

  672. minded.

  673. If we're

  674. going to

  675. experience

  676. real unity

  677. in our

  678. church

  679. be a

  680. real

  681. Christian

  682. family

  683. we're

  684. talking

  685. about

  686. we've

  687. got to

  688. have the

  689. same

  690. mind

  691. or be

  692. like

  693. minded.

  694. basically

  695. the same

  696. person

  697. you were

  698. before

  699. you

  700. became

  701. a

  702. Christian

  703. in

  704. terms

  705. of

  706. your

  707. personality

  708. who

  709. you

  710. are

  711. your

  712. Myers

  713. Briggs

  714. temperament

  715. you've

  716. taken

  717. any

  718. of

  719. those

  720. kind

  721. of

  722. tests

  723. that's

  724. who you

  725. are

  726. who God

  727. made

  728. you

  729. you still

  730. have the

  731. same

  732. talents

  733. and abilities

  734. that you

  735. had

  736. and when you

  737. became a

  738. Christian

  739. the Lord

  740. gave you

  741. some

  742. spiritual

  743. gifts

  744. and so

  745. as you

  746. look around

  747. there's a

  748. lot of

  749. differences

  750. in this

  751. room

  752. by God's

  753. design

  754. and we

  755. don't have

  756. to cease

  757. being who

  758. we are

  759. to be

  760. this

  761. Christian

  762. family

  763. just like

  764. in your

  765. home

  766. you're

  767. different

  768. man

  769. husband

  770. wife

  771. child

  772. children

  773. y'all are

  774. different

  775. you know

  776. as parents

  777. a lot of

  778. times it

  779. takes a

  780. while to

  781. figure it

  782. out

  783. we aren't

  784. going to

  785. change our

  786. children's

  787. basic

  788. nature

  789. if your

  790. child came

  791. into this

  792. world as a

  793. strong

  794. willed

  795. I know

  796. what I

  797. want

  798. I'm going

  799. to do

  800. what I

  801. want

  802. they're

  803. never

  804. going to

  805. be the

  806. little

  807. mild

  808. meek

  809. and

  810. passive

  811. life's

  812. okay

  813. kind of

  814. person

  815. that's not

  816. who they

  817. are

  818. that's not

  819. how they're

  820. made

  821. now

  822. they've

  823. got to

  824. get that

  825. strong

  826. will

  827. under

  828. control

  829. you've

  830. got to

  831. manage

  832. it

  833. you've

  834. got to

  835. put it

  836. in the

  837. right

  838. direction

  839. you've

  840. got to

  841. teach

  842. them

  843. to learn

  844. to

  845. obey

  846. be under

  847. authority

  848. you don't

  849. just accept

  850. them just

  851. as they

  852. are

  853. but you

  854. accept

  855. them

  856. as God

  857. made

  858. them

  859. and that's

  860. how we

  861. have to

  862. accept

  863. one

  864. another

  865. no matter

  866. what

  867. Brian's

  868. going to

  869. be

  870. Brian

  871. I'm

  872. going to

  873. be

  874. me

  875. Colton

  876. is

  877. going to

  878. be

  879. Colton

  880. and that's

  881. okay

  882. that's

  883. who you

  884. are

  885. but we

  886. are called

  887. to work

  888. together

  889. in unity

  890. and oneness

  891. like a

  892. good

  893. strong

  894. healthy

  895. family

  896. now

  897. we also

  898. do this

  899. what I'm

  900. talking about

  901. here is

  902. not really

  903. unique

  904. to the

  905. church

  906. the close

  907. family

  908. relationship

  909. should be

  910. there but

  911. they're in

  912. other places

  913. this is

  914. basketball season

  915. we'll use

  916. basketball as

  917. an example

  918. basketball

  919. teams

  920. made up

  921. of guys

  922. and women

  923. different

  924. heights

  925. different

  926. bills

  927. different

  928. skills

  929. you don't

  930. want them

  931. all to be

  932. the same

  933. if I'm

  934. going to

  935. put together

  936. a basketball

  937. team

  938. I want

  939. to have

  940. one guy

  941. who's

  942. seven foot

  943. two if

  944. I can

  945. but I

  946. want some

  947. guys

  948. I don't

  949. care how

  950. tall or

  951. short they

  952. are to be

  953. able to

  954. dribble the

  955. ball

  956. they got

  957. to be

  958. able to

  959. take

  960. control

  961. bring the

  962. ball down

  963. the court

  964. pass it

  965. off

  966. I need

  967. some people

  968. who can

  969. shoot

  970. but when

  971. they come

  972. together on

  973. that court

  974. they got to

  975. function together

  976. as one

  977. one unit

  978. one team

  979. one body

  980. one family

  981. we understand

  982. that

  983. it's the same

  984. way where

  985. you work

  986. most

  987. businesses

  988. people who

  989. go there

  990. every day

  991. very different

  992. in every way

  993. have different

  994. job responsibilities

  995. but if the

  996. company is

  997. going to

  998. function

  999. as the

  1000. owner

  1001. intends

  1002. everybody's

  1003. got to

  1004. come together

  1005. and work

  1006. together as

  1007. one

  1008. to accomplish

  1009. the common

  1010. purpose

  1011. make money

  1012. or whatever

  1013. the business

  1014. is going to

  1015. do

  1016. in the

  1017. church

  1018. we need

  1019. to have

  1020. the same

  1021. mindset

  1022. that we've

  1023. come together

  1024. for a purpose

  1025. we're going to

  1026. look at it

  1027. in a moment

  1028. we've come

  1029. together not

  1030. to be

  1031. individuals

  1032. we don't

  1033. exist in

  1034. this church

  1035. for me to

  1036. be some

  1037. kind of

  1038. speaking star

  1039. or Brian

  1040. or singers

  1041. to be some

  1042. kind of

  1043. singing stars

  1044. or anything

  1045. like that

  1046. we come

  1047. together to

  1048. accomplish the

  1049. purpose God

  1050. has given us

  1051. that we'll

  1052. look at in a

  1053. moment

  1054. we've got to

  1055. have the

  1056. same mindset

  1057. that's going

  1058. to happen

  1059. in your home

  1060. you've got to

  1061. have the same

  1062. mindset here

  1063. we're going

  1064. to be a

  1065. family

  1066. no one

  1067. person is

  1068. going to

  1069. call the

  1070. shots

  1071. or be

  1072. the star

  1073. we're going

  1074. to be

  1075. one family

  1076. number two

  1077. we need

  1078. to have

  1079. the same

  1080. love

  1081. love is

  1082. the unifying

  1083. force in

  1084. all of life

  1085. it's what

  1086. God uses

  1087. to draw

  1088. people

  1089. together

  1090. it's what

  1091. unites a

  1092. man and

  1093. woman together

  1094. in a healthy

  1095. marriage

  1096. certainly

  1097. there's

  1098. commitment

  1099. I understand

  1100. that aspect

  1101. there's got

  1102. to be love

  1103. for it to be

  1104. a meaningful

  1105. commitment

  1106. love is what

  1107. unites

  1108. parents and

  1109. children

  1110. even

  1111. siblings

  1112. now

  1113. when we

  1114. think about

  1115. this kind

  1116. of love

  1117. that unites

  1118. in our

  1119. homes

  1120. at church

  1121. we need to

  1122. make sure we

  1123. understand

  1124. it's a certain

  1125. kind of love

  1126. that Paul

  1127. describes in

  1128. 1 Corinthians 13

  1129. I want you to

  1130. look at it

  1131. with me

  1132. as we look

  1133. at this

  1134. I want you

  1135. to think

  1136. about you

  1137. there are

  1138. times when

  1139. the lack

  1140. of love

  1141. and unity

  1142. in the

  1143. home

  1144. or in

  1145. the church

  1146. I'm a

  1147. part of

  1148. the problem

  1149. because I'm

  1150. impatient

  1151. because I'm

  1152. not kind

  1153. because I

  1154. don't exercise

  1155. any self

  1156. control

  1157. as we go

  1158. through that

  1159. look

  1160. or think

  1161. about you

  1162. please do

  1163. not punch

  1164. your spouse

  1165. child

  1166. or parent

  1167. and I

  1168. read something

  1169. here a while

  1170. back

  1171. makes me

  1172. say this

  1173. I don't

  1174. know

  1175. anybody

  1176. in our

  1177. church

  1178. that is

  1179. this way

  1180. I don't

  1181. really know

  1182. anybody

  1183. personally

  1184. but I

  1185. read

  1186. that there

  1187. are some

  1188. men

  1189. who think

  1190. they're

  1191. spiritual

  1192. giants

  1193. go to

  1194. church

  1195. every Sunday

  1196. and what

  1197. they will

  1198. do is

  1199. they'll

  1200. take what

  1201. we're going

  1202. to see

  1203. there on

  1204. 1 Corinthians

  1205. 13

  1206. and they'll

  1207. go home

  1208. and cram

  1209. it down

  1210. their wife's

  1211. throat

  1212. that's not

  1213. being a

  1214. spiritual

  1215. leader

  1216. that's being

  1217. just a

  1218. point blank

  1219. jerk

  1220. and that's

  1221. going to

  1222. alienate

  1223. your wife

  1224. or your

  1225. children

  1226. if you

  1227. go home

  1228. and cram

  1229. this down

  1230. their

  1231. throat

  1232. you think

  1233. about you

  1234. I'm thinking

  1235. about me

  1236. and if your

  1237. spouse or

  1238. children or

  1239. parents

  1240. they're far

  1241. from this

  1242. pray for

  1243. them

  1244. ask God

  1245. if they're

  1246. in this

  1247. room right

  1248. now

  1249. ask God

  1250. convict

  1251. them of

  1252. their

  1253. lack of

  1254. patience

  1255. or whatever

  1256. you can't

  1257. be the

  1258. Holy Spirit

  1259. you can't

  1260. be God

  1261. let them

  1262. be convicted

  1263. taught by

  1264. God

  1265. and you

  1266. just focus

  1267. on you

  1268. right now

  1269. here's the

  1270. kind of love

  1271. that will

  1272. unite a

  1273. church

  1274. a home

  1275. many groups

  1276. love is

  1277. patient

  1278. and kind

  1279. love is

  1280. not envy

  1281. or boast

  1282. it is not

  1283. arrogant

  1284. or rude

  1285. it does

  1286. not insist

  1287. on its

  1288. own way

  1289. it is not

  1290. irritable

  1291. or resentful

  1292. it does

  1293. not rejoice

  1294. at wrongdoing

  1295. but rejoices

  1296. with the truth

  1297. love bears

  1298. all things

  1299. believes all

  1300. things

  1301. hopes all

  1302. things

  1303. endures all

  1304. things

  1305. love never

  1306. fails

  1307. this is the

  1308. kind of love

  1309. we need to

  1310. develop

  1311. and demonstrate

  1312. in everything

  1313. that we do

  1314. here in

  1315. this church

  1316. and everything

  1317. you do

  1318. there at

  1319. your home

  1320. if you want

  1321. us to have

  1322. a united

  1323. family like

  1324. church

  1325. if you want

  1326. your home

  1327. to be a

  1328. true

  1329. united

  1330. loving

  1331. family

  1332. we also

  1333. see in

  1334. this passage

  1335. number three

  1336. we need to

  1337. be in

  1338. full accord

  1339. and of

  1340. one mind

  1341. new american

  1342. standard

  1343. translates this

  1344. united in

  1345. spirit

  1346. intent

  1347. on

  1348. one

  1349. purpose

  1350. the idea

  1351. here is to

  1352. be of

  1353. one soul

  1354. some commentators

  1355. describe this

  1356. as christians

  1357. being soul

  1358. brothers and

  1359. soul

  1360. sisters

  1361. just

  1362. having the

  1363. same passion

  1364. you might

  1365. think

  1366. the same

  1367. drive

  1368. same

  1369. motivation

  1370. now as i

  1371. said earlier

  1372. this does not

  1373. mean that we

  1374. are united and

  1375. passionate about

  1376. all the same

  1377. things

  1378. you know when i

  1379. use the

  1380. example

  1381. a while ago

  1382. about sports

  1383. teams

  1384. basketball

  1385. teams

  1386. some of

  1387. you

  1388. that's

  1389. something

  1390. that interests

  1391. you

  1392. sports

  1393. some of

  1394. you probably

  1395. rolled your

  1396. eyes

  1397. you don't

  1398. care a

  1399. thing in

  1400. the world

  1401. about sports

  1402. there's nothing

  1403. wrong with that

  1404. i mean you're a little

1405. odd if you don't care

  1406. anything about sports

1407. but in the big picture

  1408. things there's really

  1409. nothing wrong with it

1410. so i love the music we do

  1411. but i don't think about

  1412. planning it and rehearsing

  1413. it and i don't think

1414. about all the stuff's got

1415. to be done when we move

1416. from over here from the

  1417. sanctuary over here

  1418. that's not my thing

1419. you don't know it but

  1420. you're thankful that's not

  1421. my thing

  1422. they don't even try

1423. we don't all have to be

  1424. gung-ho about every single

1425. thing the church is doing

1426. but we've got to be

  1427. gung-ho about us as

  1428. Pickens First Baptist

  1429. fulfilling the purpose

1430. that god has given us in

1431. his word we put it

1432. together like this a long

  1433. time ago

  1434. our purpose is

  1435. look at it

  1436. Pickens First Baptist

1437. Church is this to be a

  1438. worshiping evangelizing

  1439. learning and loving

1440. family of faith to the

1441. glory of god we exist to

  1442. be a well

  1443. church

1444. we also said when we

1445. developed this how we go

  1446. about this through the

1447. power of the holy spirit

1448. and prayer we will seek to

  1449. accomplish our purpose

  1450. through a vital worship

  1451. encounter with the living

  1452. god evangelistic outreach

  1453. to the unsaved learning

1454. experience with the word of

  1455. god and loving involvement

1456. with both our family of

  1457. faith and the world

1458. our purpose is based on the

1459. way that Luke in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1460. chapter 2 summarized how

  1461. the early church was

  1462. functioning what they were

1463. doing shortly after the day

1464. of Pentecost and god had

  1465. just brought them all

1466. together it was all new

1467. this is what they were

  1468. doing

1469. the key for a church to

1470. experience unity year in and

1471. year out through good times

1472. and hard times including a

1473. pandemic is for us to number

1474. one love one another with a

1475. self-giving love like we saw

  1476. in first Corinthians 13 that's

1477. got to be our foundation we're

1478. going to love one another the

1479. self-giving kind of love but

1480. number two we've got to always

1481. stay focused on our purpose and

1482. work together with our talents

1483. our abilities our gifts our money

  1484. everything to accomplish this

1485. purpose and if you think about you

1486. know some people have the idea the

1487. church ought to do this ought to do

1488. that if it doesn't fit in with

  1489. worshiping evangelizing learning

  1490. that's discipleship studying the

1491. Bible teaching the Bible and loving

1492. Christian fellowship meeting needs in

1493. Jesus's name we might call that some

1494. people call that benevolence but it's

1495. not just providing what people need

1496. is provide what people need in the

1497. name of Jesus with a gospel witness

  1498. that's what we're about we're not

1499. some kind of religious social club or

1500. anything like that we are a church with

1501. this purpose now if everyone will be

1502. focused on this goal and working to

1503. this end in love we will stay united

1504. it's like Rick Warren said I've got to

1505. put this in my notes so I'm just going

1506. to read it to you he says if everyone

1507. is paddling the boat toward the

1508. destination they won't be able to rock

1509. it in a lot of churches there's a lot of

1510. a lot of churches the trouble is there's

1511. people who do nothing but rock the boat

1512. they don't paddle they don't serve they

1513. don't use their gifts time gifts and

1514. abilities and so forth they don't use

1515. it to be involved in ministry they're

1516. not helping the church to achieve its

1517. purpose they just rock the boat if we'll

1518. love one another use the gifts God's

1519. given us the talents and the abilities in

1520. some aspect of ministry for the purpose of

1521. worship evangelizing learning and loving

1522. we won't rock the boat in fact the boat

1523. won't get rocked so let me just wind this

1524. up by asking are you contributing to the

1525. unity of the church and I might want to

1526. ask I need to also emphasize are you

1527. contributing to the unity of your home

1528. are you making our church more like a

1529. family by your loving involvement

1530. service relating to people are you making

1531. your family a more loving place place where

1532. everybody wants to be where everybody can just

1533. be at relaxed and at ease and know this is

1534. home are you contributing to that that kind of

1535. unity in your home let me ask you this if

1536. that's what we want here at home ask God to

1537. help you to love your brothers and sisters in

1538. Christ here at our church and ask God to help

1539. you to truly love your spouse your children your

1540. parents your brother your sister it's not always

1541. easy to love in fact a lot of times it's hard to

1542. love some people are very hard to live to love

1543. some people just seem like they don't want to let

1544. they don't want you to love them that's what we're

1545. called to do here in the church and in our homes

1546. especially and then are you asking God to help you stay

1547. focused on our purpose here at church and asking him to

1548. help you to stay involved or show you how to get involved

1549. maybe in moving our church in the direction we need to go to

1550. fulfill our purpose let's pray together dear God help us now to

1551. see what we need to do to contribute to the unity and

1552. harmony and family-like atmosphere of our church and what we

1553. need to do contribute to this family healthy atmosphere at home

1554. father show us do we need to get more involved in people's lives show

1555. more interest develop deeper relationships

1556. show us father if we need to show the people in our homes that

1557. they're first in their life before the people at work or the people

1558. at school dear God we pray that you will help us to truly

1559. understand and desire to have Christian family unity oneness here in

1560. this church help us to have that to desire that and help us all put do what

1561. we need to do to develop that and achieve your purpose and Lord I do pray that

1562. you'll help people in this room who you need some work to be done in their home life

1563. maybe in their lives maybe in their lives maybe in their lives their lives their lives their lives

1564. their presence their actions create within all of us right now dear God we pray a heartfelt desire

1565. to be a part of a God honoring home with our family members a God honoring church family

1566. with our brothers and sisters in our brothers and sisters in Christ here

1567. show us how we should respond let's just all pray and ask God to make it clear and let's just obey him

1568. respond in the way that he wants us to this morning let's just bow our heads close our eyes

1569. there's music that'll be played for us just to have some thinking time make good use of it

  1570. so

  1571. you

  1572. you

  1573. you

  1574. you

  1575. you

  1576. you

  1577. you

  1578. you
