  1. outside of your biological family,

  2. where have you sensed the most family-like bond?

  3. Just the sense of oneness or closeness.

  4. Think about it for a moment.

  5. As I think about it,

  6. and I'm going to believe girls and guys both in here,

  7. you experienced it to a great extent

  8. on some type of sports team.

  9. There are people who are on a team

  10. all the way from little league to high school,

  11. even college.

  12. They don't get to play that much,

  13. but they love the sense of camaraderie.

  14. It's like a family.

  15. Their fellow players or their brothers or their sisters.

  16. Coaches are like fathers to them.

  17. Some of you experienced that in a band.

  18. Some of you at Pickens High School.

  19. Some at maybe a college.

  20. Some of you are fortunate in that the place that you work,

  21. there's maybe your office,

  22. or some department,

  23. or some work group.

  24. And there's just a real closeness,

  25. a family-like bond.

  26. Now, don't answer out loud,

  27. but do you sense that at church?

  28. Have you ever?

  29. Do you here?

  30. Do you in a Sunday school class,

  31. or some other small group that meets on a regular basis,

  32. and you really get to know one another

  33. and share life together as brothers and sisters in Christ?

  34. You know, one of the most well-known ways

  35. the New Testament describes the church

  36. is that we're the family of God.

  37. I mean, God is our Father.

  38. Jesus taught us to pray,

  39. think of God as our Heavenly Father,

  40. we who are Christians.

  41. And throughout the New Testament,

  42. Christians, members of the church,

  43. are referred to as brothers and sisters

  44. over and over again.

  45. And so as we think about church,

  46. we need to understand that from God's perspective,

  47. what the Lord intends,

  48. we're supposed to be like a family.

  49. We love one another.

  50. In spite of our differences,

  51. and sometimes disagreements,

  52. we love one another,

  53. and we work together

  54. in doing what God's called us to do

  55. as Pickens First Baptist Church.

  56. Now, I thank God that we don't have a problem

  57. with bad blood or division

  58. between individuals or groups in this church.

  59. You know, if you were just here for the first time,

  60. you haven't been here many times,

  61. you might think the way he's starting,

  62. and when we look at this particular passage of Scripture,

  63. you might think to yourself,

  64. there's a problem.

  65. He is really dealing with some division in the church.

  66. I'm not aware of anything like that.

  67. We are dealing with this subject matter

  68. because that's where we are in the book of Philippians,

  69. and we're going through the book of Philippians.

  70. So that's one of the good things

  71. about going through a book of the Bible.

  72. You cover all kinds of topics,

  73. things that the Lord knows we need.

  74. So I'm not thinking about,

  75. I don't know about

  76. any kind of rupture in our church family.

  77. Here's the way I'm approaching this,

  78. last week and this week.

  79. Do you feel like you are a part of a

  80. close-knit spiritual family

  81. here in this church?

  82. Now it's hard for that to take place

  83. together here like this,

  84. but in smaller groups is where you really experience it,

  85. where you really feel it.

  86. You know, many churches have difficulty

  87. being a close-knit family.

  88. There's a lot of reasons,

  89. but one, we American Christians,

  90. this is not my, I didn't come up with this idea.

  91. I've read this numerous times, and it's true,

  92. but we as American Christians,

  93. we mainly emphasize the idea of our spiritual lives

  94. having a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ,

  95. with God as our Heavenly Father.

  96. And while we like fellowship with other Christians,

  97. it's sort of the icing on the cake.

  98. It's not a part of the real foundation

  99. of what the church is supposed to be

  100. in the way that we normally think.

  101. If we're right with God, that's the main thing.

  102. And it is the main thing,

  103. but it's not the only thing.

  104. Another thing that makes it hard for a church

  105. to really bond together,

  106. some churches, some areas,

  107. is a lot of us,

  108. we have close, immediate,

  109. or extended family members right here close by,

  110. and we don't really have a need

  111. for a lot of other close relationships.

  112. And you think maybe how busy your life is

  113. with work and other things you've got going on,

  114. your immediate or extended family members,

  115. they're not only meeting your needs,

  116. but they're, you think to yourself,

  117. they're the only ones I have time for.

  118. And so when you think about all this together,

  119. it's not an easy thing for a church family

  120. to really,

  121. it's not easy for us to come together

  122. and really think of one another,

  123. relate to one another

  124. like a real family,

  125. as the New Testament calls us to do.

  126. Now, God calls us

  127. to be serious about this,

  128. to truly love one another like family,

  129. and work together in harmony,

  130. doing things to help us

  131. to accomplish our purpose ministry-wise.

  132. God wants us to do that

  133. as a way of expressing our love to Him,

  134. as a way of obeying Him.

  135. We can think about,

  136. we need to be the kind of spiritual family

  137. that the Bible,

  138. we're going to be reading about,

  139. and it pleases our Heavenly Father.

  140. Let me give you a thought here.

  141. Every parent in this room,

  142. it doesn't matter if their children

  143. are 6, 8, 10,

  144. or if they're 50, 60 years old,

  145. every parent in this room

  146. would say that one of the greatest joys

  147. in my life

  148. is for my children,

  149. to see my children love one another.

  150. Get alone.

  151. Have good relationships.

  152. Now, kids in this room,

  153. people in this room who are children,

  154. teenagers, never been married,

  155. you may not can understand that,

  156. but there is nothing

  157. that pleases your parents more

  158. than to see you get alone,

  159. love one another,

  160. just enjoy being together.

  161. And on the other hand,

  162. one of the most disappointing,

  163. hurtful things in all of life

  164. for a parent

  165. is when their children

  166. despise one another,

  167. always at each other's throats,

  168. or they don't have anything

  169. to do with one another.

  170. It's not enough for parents

  171. to have children

  172. that don't just fight,

  173. but ignore one another.

  174. That's the way it is in the church.

  175. God is not pleased

  176. just when we don't fight.

  177. He wants us to really be a family

  178. and live and enjoy life together

  179. as we can

  180. as a church family.

  181. I want you to turn with me

  182. back to Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  183. We're going to continue looking at

  184. verses 1 through 4,

  185. verses 3 and 4 in particular today,

  186. what we started last week

  187. about developing greater closeness

  188. in this church,

  189. developing real family-like relationships

  190. with one another in this church.

  191. Philippians 2, verse 1.

    Philippians 2:1

  192. So, if there is any encouragement in Christ,

  193. any comfort from love,

  194. any participation in the Spirit,

  195. any affection and sympathy,

  196. complete my joy by being of the same mind,

  197. having the same love,

  198. being in full accord and of one mind.

  199. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit,

  200. but in humility count others

  201. more significant than yourselves.

  202. Let each of you

  203. look not only to his own interests,

  204. but also to the interests of others.

  205. This is Paul's way of calling

  206. this church he's writing to.

  207. He knows them well.

  208. He has a great relationship with them.

  209. And overall,

  210. it's probably the best church

  211. that we have a letter

  212. from Paul to that church

  213. in the New Testament.

  214. But everything's not perfect.

  215. There are some issues there

  216. that he is trying to address.

  217. And trying to help them understand

  218. how to grow deeper together

  219. as true brothers and sisters in the Lord.

  220. Let's look at what that requires.

  221. Now, like we did last week,

  222. as we go through this passage,

  223. you apply this to your home life

  224. wherever you can.

  225. Every point,

  226. everything we look at

  227. is not going to apply

  228. to your family.

  229. But a lot of it can.

  230. A lot of it will

  231. if you'll think through it that way.

  232. And it may be that

  233. what you really need

  234. to get out of this message

  235. is not so much

  236. being closer to people in this church,

  237. although that may be a need,

  238. but it may be that God's got you here

  239. this morning to help you

  240. see the need for you

  241. to start working on

  242. being a better parent

  243. parent or child

  244. or brother or sister

  245. in your home.

  246. Let's look at it.

  247. Number one,

  248. to experience true Christian unity,

  249. we must build upon

  250. some common Christian experiences.

  251. Paul's writing to this church

  252. and before he starts talking to them

  253. about really, you know,

  254. putting one another first

  255. and be humble before one another,

  256. he's trying to look at this church

  257. and say,

  258. there's a lot of things

  259. you've got in common

  260. that you share together.

  261. And we looked at that

  262. a little bit last week

  263. in verse one.

  264. I want to look at

  265. just one thing right here.

  266. He says,

  267. we've all experienced

  268. encouragement in Christ.

  269. That word encouragement,

  270. sometimes it's translated comfort,

  271. sometimes it's translated help.

  272. The idea is

  273. we've experienced

  274. encouragement, comfort, help

  275. through having a relationship

  276. with Jesus Christ.

  277. For an example,

  278. if you're a Christian,

  279. you know what it's like

  280. to be forgiven of your sins.

  281. Some people in this room may,

  282. you may have before

  283. you became a Christian

  284. or at some point in your life

  285. through what you did sinfully,

  286. you confessed it,

  287. you repented,

  288. you know what it's like

  289. to have a great weight

  290. of guilt removed from you.

  291. But all of us as Christians,

  292. we know,

  293. we have this common understanding,

  294. I am a forgiven child of God.

  295. I'm no longer guilty.

  296. I have to hang my head

  297. and walk around

  298. with my head down anymore.

  299. Another thing we have in common is

  300. we have assurance as Christians

  301. that we are children of God.

  302. We're not like everybody else

  303. in the world.

  304. We're children of God.

  305. Now and will be for all eternity.

  306. Sharing common experiences

  307. of any kind

  308. has a way of drawing people

  309. close together.

  310. That's why people who play sports,

  311. they do things together.

  312. They work hard together.

  313. People who are in the band,

  314. people who, you know,

  315. are together at work

  316. and do some good things together.

  317. It just draws you together.

  318. This is a good reason

  319. why it's good for families

  320. to do all kinds of things together.

  321. Think about it.

  322. Spring is not far

  323. and there's a lot of people

  324. in this room

  325. as spring comes

  326. you're going to be outside more.

  327. There's things you're going to

  328. need to do

  329. and want to do

  330. in your yard,

  331. in a garden.

  332. Get your children involved.

  333. That is something

  334. that you can do together,

  335. work together.

  336. It can build

  337. good relationships.

  338. Your children need to learn to work

  339. so let them work with you

  340. and make it a positive experience.

  341. But don't let it all be work.

  342. Children and parents

  343. need to do some fun things together.

  344. Play together.

  345. Find ways

  346. where

  347. you just

  348. laugh.

  349. You have fun.

  350. You do things

  351. that you all enjoy.

  352. It brings you together,

  353. doesn't it?

  354. Even eating meals together.

  355. I know there can be

  356. some wars at the table

  357. but eating meals together

  358. can be that thing

  359. that sort of brings you together.

  360. I'm not talking about

  361. just parents

  362. with children at home.

  363. I want to encourage you,

  364. you've got brothers and sisters,

  365. you've got parents,

  366. you have adult children,

  367. don't just

  368. all go your separate ways

  369. and lose the bond,

  370. the closeness

  371. that God intends for us to have

  372. until death takes people out.

  373. Do things with your adult children.

  374. Do things with your parents.

  375. Do things with your older brothers,

  376. grown brothers and sisters.

  377. Keep those relationships alive

  378. if you can,

  379. if they'll allow you to.

  380. Now,

  381. all of us who are members

  382. of this church

  383. have many common

  384. spiritual experiences

  385. that can

  386. be used by God

  387. to draw us closer together

  388. as a church family.

  389. think about them sometimes.

  390. Talk about them.

  391. Some of your common

  392. spiritual experiences

  393. with one another

  394. and build

  395. something more than

  396. a shallow,

  397. superficial relationship.

  398. Number two,

  399. to experience true Christian unity,

  400. we must develop

  401. a common Christian mindset.

  402. mindset.

  403. Not uniformity

  404. we talked about last week.

  405. Everybody's not going to think

  406. the same way

  407. about everything,

  408. but what we're talking about

  409. is something specific here.

  410. Look,

  411. he says,

  412. complete my job

  413. of being of the same mind,

  414. having the same love,

  415. being in full accord

  416. and of one mind.

  417. To summarize

  418. what we looked at last week,

  419. the key for a church

  420. to experience

  421. family-like unity

  422. can be found

  423. in two statements.

  424. Number one,

  425. we must love one another

  426. with self-giving love.

  427. If we're going to be

  428. a true family here,

  429. we've got to learn

  430. to love one another

  431. in this self-giving,

  432. patient kind of way

  433. and not go around

  434. with our feelings

  435. on our sleeves,

  436. least little slight,

  437. least little whatever,

  438. and we're offended

  439. and we withdraw.

  440. Look at what

  441. the kind of love

  442. we're talking about involves.

  443. Now,

  444. this also is the kind of love

  445. that we need to have

  446. in our homes,

  447. parents and children,

  448. children and parents,

  449. brothers and sisters.

  450. Wake up,

  451. brothers and sisters.

  452. Look on this screen.

  453. Love is patient

  454. and kind.

  455. Love does not envy

  456. or boast.

  457. It is not arrogant

  458. or rude.

  459. It does not insist

  460. on its own way.

  461. It is not irritable

  462. or resentful.

  463. It does not rejoice

  464. at wrongdoing,

  465. but rejoices

  466. with the truth.

  467. Love bears all things,

  468. believes all things,

  469. hopes all things,

  470. endures all things.

  471. Love never ends.

  472. This is the kind of love

  473. that we need to develop,

  474. we need to work on,

  475. really in all

  476. of our relationships.

  477. What we're talking about here,

  478. among one another

  479. and always in your home.

  480. Second thing

  481. that will help us

  482. to be united,

  483. we must focus

  484. on our purpose

  485. and work together

  486. to accomplish it.

  487. We looked at this

  488. last week.

  489. I don't want to spill it.

  490. It's been a great deal

  491. on that.

  492. We exist for this.

  493. In the book of Acts,

  494. the first summary statement

  495. of what the church

  496. was doing,

  497. they were worshiping,

  498. evangelizing,

  499. learning,

  500. and loving.

  501. That's what we're

  502. called to do.

  503. That's how we fulfill

  504. the great commission

  505. that the Lord

  506. has given us.

  507. You know,

  508. in a church family,

  509. we don't get to choose

  510. who we will

  511. or won't love.

  512. It's like in your family.

  513. I mean,

  514. if you're going to really

  515. be a strong family,

  516. it doesn't matter

  517. what your brother

  518. or sister is like.

  519. They're your brother

  520. or sister.

  521. And a lot of you

  522. have close interactions

  523. with more extended family.

  524. You're cousins.

  525. You don't get to choose

  526. who they are.

  527. That's decided for you.

  528. And we just have to learn

  529. to love one another.

  530. And a lot of times

  531. and a lot of ways

  532. we do that at home.

  533. And what Paul's talking about

  534. is we've got to bring it

  535. to the church.

  536. We've got to love

  537. one another.

  538. Warts and all.

  539. Differences and all.

  540. Do you try to express

  541. this kind of love

  542. in some of the relationships

  543. that you already have

  544. here in this church?

  545. Not be easily offended,

  546. but really

  547. give yourself to people

  548. this way.

  549. We're also called

  550. to fulfill the Lord's

  551. great commission

  552. by being this well church.

  553. And I want to ask you this.

  554. Are you helping us

  555. do that in some way?

  556. Every Christian has

  557. spiritual gifts,

  558. talents, and abilities

  559. that God expects us,

  560. calls us,

  561. commands us

  562. to use in our church

  563. or through some of the

  564. ministries of our church

  565. to glorify Him,

  566. to help other people

  567. come to know Christ,

  568. to help people grow

  569. in their relationship

  570. with the Lord,

  571. to meet real needs

  572. that people have.

  573. How are you involved?

  574. I know we're not

  575. doing a lot right now

  576. because of the

  577. COVID situation,

  578. but how were you involved

  579. before we sort of

  580. put things on hold?

  581. How do you plan

  582. to be involved

  583. when things

  584. pick back up

  585. and come to the,

  586. what will be

  587. a new normal?

  588. Let's look on now

  589. at the third way

  590. to build church unity.

  591. Look at this.

  592. To experience true

  593. Christian unity,

  594. we must work daily

  595. on our common

  596. Christian responsibility

  597. to humble ourselves.

  598. I want you to look

  599. at what he says here,

  600. verses three and four.

  601. Do nothing from

  602. selfish ambition

  603. or conceit,

  604. but in humility

  605. count others

  606. more significant

  607. than yourselves.

  608. Let each of you

  609. look not only

  610. to his own interest,

  611. but also to the

  612. interest of others.

  613. Let's look at

  614. the specifics here.

  615. Number one,

  616. we can't promote

  617. ourselves over

  618. other people.

  619. Do nothing from

  620. selfish ambition

  621. or conceit.

  622. Note two phrases.

  623. Number one,

  624. selfish ambition

  625. refers to self-promotion.

  626. Conceit,

  627. or some translations

  628. you have,

  629. says vain conceit.

  630. It refers to

  631. seeking glory

  632. for yourself

  633. that is not deserved.

  634. Now the thought

  635. may come into your mind,

  636. don't seek glory

  637. for yourself

  638. that's not deserved.

  639. How do I know

  640. if mine's deserved?

  641. Don't seek glory

  642. for yourself

  643. and you don't have

  644. to worry about it.

  645. Just don't seek

  646. glory for yourself.

  647. Call attention

  648. to yourself

  649. and you won't have

  650. to worry about

  651. whether it's deserved

  652. or not.

  653. You know,

  654. as I was,

  655. you know,

  656. studying this,

  657. thinking about this,

  658. we see it a lot

  659. in the sports world,

  660. especially among

  661. professional athletes.

  662. If you read a lot,

  663. watch things

  664. on ESPN

  665. and so forth,

  666. interviews,

  667. what people are saying

  668. about one another

  669. and so forth,

  670. there's a lot

  671. of professional athletes

  672. who complain about

  673. not getting

  674. the respect

  675. they deserve.

  676. when I read

  677. a lot of these athletes

  678. making multi-million

  679. dollar salaries,

  680. living just totally

  681. ungodly lives

  682. and thinking of no one

  683. on the team

  684. but themselves,

  685. I think about how

  686. absurd it is

  687. for them to complain

  688. about,

  689. I don't get the proper

  690. respect I should.

  691. There's one thing

  692. we need to make clear

  693. this morning.

  694. We can't demand

  695. respect of other people.

  696. You can't demand

  697. people around you

  698. respect you.

  699. Now let me take

  700. the time out here

  701. with exceptions.

  702. The Bible calls us

  703. to respect our parents

  704. throughout their life.

  705. Boys and girls

  706. and all of us

  707. in this room

  708. if our parents

  709. are alive,

  710. it's our God-given

  711. responsibility

  712. to respect them.

  713. And boys and girls

  714. at home,

  715. if you show

  716. disrespect

  717. to your mother

  718. or father,

  719. they need to

  720. just wear you

  721. out

  722. for your lack

  723. of respect

  724. and make you

  725. at least show

  726. respect for them

  727. as the authorities

  728. of the home

  729. because that is

  730. a God-given

  731. authority picture.

  732. There are

  733. God-given

  734. authorities

  735. in the scripture

  736. and parents

  737. are one,

  738. a main one

  739. who do,

  740. can make you

  741. as children,

  742. you've got to

  743. show me respect.

  744. You may not mean it.

  745. They can't make you

  746. mean it.

  747. They can make you

  748. show it

  749. or suffer

  750. serious consequences

  751. and good parents

  752. will make their

  753. children show

  754. respect

  755. or suffer

  756. the consequences

  757. of not doing it.

  758. That is important.

  759. But outside

  760. of the commands,

  761. the authority

  762. structures

  763. of the world,

  764. we can't demand

  765. respect.

  766. Respect is

  767. something we've

  768. got to earn

  769. by our character,

  770. by our work ethic,

  771. by the way

  772. that we treat

  773. other people.

  774. You know,

  775. a lot of these

  776. professional athletes,

  777. they could,

  778. they would be

  779. respected more

  780. if they focus

  781. on being a better

  782. teammate,

  783. if they focus

  784. on being a

  785. better human

  786. being.

  787. They would find

  788. that they're

  789. respected more

  790. within their team

  791. by their opponents,

  792. their coaches,

  793. their fans.

  794. If you want to

  795. develop closer

  796. relationships with

  797. people in your

  798. life everywhere,

  799. at home,

  800. church,

  801. wherever,

  802. don't promote

  803. yourself.

  804. arrogance is

  805. not becoming

  806. on anyone

  807. anywhere.

  808. Instead,

  809. look at this,

  810. we've got to

  811. humble ourselves.

  812. We must not

  813. think too highly.

  814. We must not

  815. think of ourselves

  816. as being better

  817. than others,

  818. the second part

  819. of verse 3.

  820. But in humility,

  821. count others

  822. more significant

  823. than yourselves.

  824. I want to

  825. explain this

  826. with a story.

  827. A.T.

  828. Robertson,

  829. in the early

  830. part of the

  831. 1900s,

  832. he was one

  833. of the most

  834. respected

  835. New Testament

  836. Greek scholars

  837. in the English

  838. speaking world.

  839. He wrote

  840. about 25 books

  841. including a

  842. 1,500 page

  843. grammar of the

  844. Greek New

  845. Testament.

  846. He wrote a

  847. verse-by-verse

  848. commentary on the

  849. entire New

  850. Testament that

  851. explains the

  852. meaning of

  853. every major

  854. Greek word.

  855. He was also

  856. a full-time

  857. professor at

  858. the Southern

  859. Baptist Theological

  860. Seminary in

  861. Louisville,

  862. Kentucky.

  863. He was up

  864. there with

  865. few peers

  866. as a scholar,

  867. as a Christian

  868. scholar in his

  869. day.

  870. His father-in-law

  871. was John

  872. Broadus.

  873. Broadus was

  874. one of the

  875. founders of

  876. Southern Seminary.

  877. He was also a

  878. New Testament

  879. scholar.

  880. He was respected

  881. but nowhere near

  882. the level of

  883. Robertson.

  884. Now both were

  885. buried in the

  886. Cave Hill

  887. Cemetery in

  888. Louisville,

  889. Kentucky.

  890. Broadus died

  891. first.

  892. Much older,

  893. so you would

  894. expect that.

  895. He did.

  896. Broadus died

  897. first.

  898. His grave is

  899. marked by a

  900. towering monument

  901. erected by his

  902. family.

  903. That wasn't his

  904. desire, but his

  905. family chose to

  906. erect a monument

  907. over his grave.

  908. Well, next to

  909. Broadus' monument

  910. is the flat,

  911. level with the

  912. ground grave

  913. marker of A.T.

  914. Robertson.

  915. It was

  916. Robertson's

  917. request to

  918. be buried in

  919. Broadus' shadow.

  920. And I read

  921. that, I just

  922. thought, what

  923. humility.

  924. A.T.

  925. Robertson knew

  926. who he was.

  927. He knew what

  928. he had

  929. accomplished.

  930. He knew what

  931. his status was

  932. as a scholar

  933. in his day,

  934. and that brought

  935. us a great

  936. man.

  937. But nowhere

  938. near his

  939. level.

  940. But he

  941. chose,

  942. requested,

  943. to be buried

  944. in what

  945. the world

  946. would say,

  947. a lesser

  948. man's

  949. shadow.

  950. That's the

  951. kind of

  952. attitude

  953. that enables

  954. us to

  955. humble

  956. ourselves

  957. and count

  958. others more

  959. significant

  960. than ourselves.

  961. that's the

  962. kind of

  963. attitude we

  964. need to

  965. demonstrate in

  966. this church

  967. and in

  968. our homes.

  969. Now, some

  970. husbands and

  971. wives need to

  972. work on this.

  973. I haven't got

  974. any kind of

  975. emails or

  976. letters or

  977. calls, but

  978. let me just

  979. say this,

  980. men.

  981. Let your

  982. wife and

  983. children decide

  984. if you should

  985. be treated

  986. like a king.

  987. Don't you

  988. demand it.

  989. If you do,

  990. you're an

  991. arrogant

  992. rascal.

  993. Ladies,

  994. let your

  995. husband and

  996. children decide

  997. if you should

  998. be treated

  999. like a queen.

  1000. Don't

  1001. demand it.

  1002. It's

  1003. unbecoming

  1004. to be that

  1005. prideful.

  1006. Now, boys

  1007. and girls,

  1008. young people,

  1009. teenagers,

  1010. some brothers

  1011. and sisters

  1012. need to work

  1013. on developing

  1014. humility

  1015. and counting

  1016. their brother

  1017. or their

  1018. sister or

  1019. their parents

  1020. more important

  1021. than me.

  1022. You hear

  1023. that?

  1024. And

  1025. regardless of

  1026. what your

  1027. parents may

  1028. say or do,

  1029. you are not

  1030. a princess

  1031. or a prince.

  1032. I know

  1033. some of the

  1034. parents today,

  1035. you have this

  1036. mindset, you

  1037. treat your

  1038. child, your

  1039. girl as if

  1040. she's some

  1041. kind of

  1042. princess that

  1043. can do no

  1044. wrong.

  1045. There's a few

  1046. that even

  1047. treat their

  1048. boy as if

  1049. he's some

  1050. kind of

  1051. prince who's

  1052. never done

  1053. wrong.

  1054. Let me tell

  1055. you about what

  1056. your children

  1057. are.

  1058. Your children

  1059. are selfish,

  1060. self-centered

  1061. sinners just

  1062. like you

  1063. are.

  1064. And just

  1065. like I

  1066. am.

  1067. They can

  1068. be arrogant,

  1069. they can be

  1070. selfish and

  1071. self-centered,

  1072. just like we

  1073. all can be

  1074. arrogant and

  1075. selfish and

  1076. self-centered.

  1077. It's hard to

  1078. do, I don't

  1079. know any kind

  1080. of easy lesson,

  1081. but we as

  1082. parents, we

  1083. need to model

  1084. and then we

  1085. need to teach

  1086. our children

  1087. how to

  1088. humble

  1089. themselves,

  1090. not think

  1091. they're some

  1092. kind of prince

  1093. or princess,

  1094. and to think

  1095. of others

  1096. more

  1097. significant

  1098. than

  1099. themselves.

  1100. Paul provides

  1101. more details

  1102. about what

  1103. humility involves.

  1104. Look at this,

  1105. we must not

  1106. be so self-centered

  1107. that we fail to

  1108. look out for the

  1109. interests of

  1110. others.

  1111. I want you to

  1112. think about this.

  1113. Look at the

  1114. verse.

  1115. Let each of you

  1116. look not only to

  1117. his own interests,

  1118. but also to the

  1119. interests of

  1120. others.

  1121. Note that he

  1122. says we should

  1123. not look only to

  1124. our interests.

  1125. Do you

  1126. understand?

  1127. It's just a part

  1128. of human nature

  1129. to take care of

  1130. yourself.

  1131. Jesus,

  1132. talking about the

  1133. second greatest

  1134. commandment,

  1135. said to love

  1136. your neighbor

  1137. as yourself.

  1138. That is not a

  1139. command to love

  1140. yourself.

  1141. We already do.

  1142. It's just human

  1143. nature.

  1144. We love

  1145. ourselves.

  1146. We look out

  1147. for ourselves.

  1148. In fact,

  1149. in some ways,

  1150. important ways,

  1151. it's a part of our

  1152. Christian responsibility

  1153. to provide for

  1154. ourselves and our

  1155. family and not be

  1156. dependent on other

  1157. people.

  1158. We've talked about

  1159. that in a day

  1160. gone by.

  1161. talking about the

  1162. importance of

  1163. working and saving

  1164. and investing and

  1165. the awful way that

  1166. socialism will lead

  1167. this country and ruin

  1168. our lives.

1169. I just had to throw

1170. that in a lot of the

  1171. socialistic Congress

  1172. and president that we

  1173. have today.

1174. Just to throw it out

  1175. there, keep it on

  1176. people's minds.

  1177. They are not looking

  1178. out for our best

  1179. interests as

  1180. Christians in this

  1181. world who desire to

  1182. live according to the

  1183. truth of God.

1184. And we need to keep

  1185. that in mind.

  1186. Living humbly before

1187. others is not an easy

  1188. thing to do.

1189. It is contrary to our

  1190. selfish and self-centered

  1191. sinful nature.

1192. But it can be done.

  1193. There are no commands.

  1194. There are no instructions

1195. in the Bible for us to

  1196. do anything that we

  1197. cannot do.

  1198. Paul is telling us

1199. here that we can't live

1200. this way as a church

  1201. family.

  1202. We can't have healthy

  1203. families in our homes

  1204. humbling ourselves,

  1205. putting others first.

1206. The key to doing this

  1207. though is to first

  1208. humble ourselves before

  1209. God.

1210. I want you to look at

  1211. this.

  1212. Peter explains this in

  1213. 1 Peter.

  1214. He says,

  1215. Clothe yourselves,

  1216. all of you, with

  1217. humility toward one

  1218. another, for God

  1219. opposes the proud, but

1220. he gives grace to the

  1221. humble.

  1222. Boys and girls,

  1223. teenagers, adults,

  1224. God opposes the

  1225. proud.

  1226. God will humble the

  1227. proud.

  1228. Make no mistake.

  1229. He says,

  1230. humble yourselves

  1231. therefore under the

  1232. mighty hand of God

  1233. so that at the

  1234. proper time he may

  1235. exalt you.

1236. At the proper time he

  1237. will exalt you.

1238. As we live in humble

  1239. dependence upon God,

  1240. he'll supply us with

  1241. everything we need to

  1242. obey him in this

  1243. matter.

1244. One of the things that

1245. God will supply us is

  1246. the Holy Spirit who

1247. lives in us if we're

  1248. Christians.

  1249. It's the Holy Spirit's

  1250. work to give us

  1251. desires and then give

1252. us the ability to live

  1253. this kind of life.

  1254. In fact, Paul describes

1255. the work of the Holy

  1256. Spirit, he talks about

1257. the fruit of the Spirit.

  1258. Some people describe the

1259. fruit of the Spirit as the

  1260. character of Jesus.

  1261. It's in Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  1262. chapter 5.

1263. The fruit of the Spirit is

  1264. love, joy, peace,

  1265. patience, kindness,

  1266. goodness, faithfulness,

  1267. gentleness, self-control,

  1268. these kind of things.

  1269. If we're Christians, the

1270. Spirit of God works within

1271. us to help us to develop.

  1272. It's a lifetime endeavor to

1273. help us develop this kind

  1274. of character.

1275. And by God's grace, we can

  1276. make progress over time,

  1277. trial and error.

  1278. Like Swindoll says, three

  1279. steps forward, two steps

  1280. back.

1281. But even that is progress.

1282. Now, based on what you see

  1283. in this passage about

1284. growing closer together as a

1285. real church family, what do

1286. you need to do to make this

1287. happen here in our church?

1288. Or if God's spoken to you

1289. about making your home a

  1290. closer-knit family, what do

  1291. you need to do?

1292. Would we be a closer

1293. church family if you would

  1294. stop talking negatively or

  1295. critically about other

  1296. church members?

1297. Would we be a stronger,

  1298. closer-knit church family if

  1299. you'd start saying positive

  1300. things?

1301. Go out of your way to affirm

  1302. people.

1303. Would your home be better?

1304. Would your home be better if

  1305. you just stopped that

  1306. negative complaining, fighting

1307. with your brother or sister,

  1308. whining to your parents,

  1309. disobeying them?

1310. Would we be a closer church

1311. family if you'd stop promoting

  1312. yourself, trying to call

  1313. attention to yourself?

1314. Would your home be stronger if

1315. you didn't try to make

  1316. everything about you?

1317. Would we be a closer church

1318. family if you started paying

  1319. attention to other people?

  1320. Noticing something's not quite

  1321. right.

1322. And because you love them and

1323. you care about them, you sort

1324. of, you try to inquire, is

  1325. there something wrong?

1326. Is there something I could help

  1327. you with?

  1328. And then you do.

1329. Would our church family be a

1330. stronger church family if we

  1331. would inconvenience ourselves

1332. for the benefit of somebody

  1333. else?

1334. Even make sacrifices of our

1335. time to serve somebody else, a

  1336. brother or sister?

1337. I want you to think about it.

1338. What is God calling you to do or

1339. stop doing to make us a closer

  1340. church family?

1341. Well, I want to encourage you to

  1342. obey Him.

1343. And then, what's the Lord calling

1344. you to do or stop doing to make

  1345. your home a closer-knit family?

  1346. Make that commitment.

  1347. It won't be easy.

1348. By God's grace, the indwelling

1349. Spirit of God, you can be the kind

1350. of church brother or sister that we

  1351. need.

1352. You can be the loving member of your

1353. home family that everyone needs and

  1354. wants you to be.

1355. Let's pray and ask God to help us be

  1356. there.

1357. Would you join with me?

1358. Dear God, help us to see right now how

1359. we should respond to you so that we can

1360. be contributing family members to a

  1361. close, loving, serving together.

1362. church family call, pickings first

  1363. Baptist.

1364. And then, Father, show us parents,

1365. children, siblings, how we should

1366. respond to make our homes better, more

  1367. positive, more loving.

1368. Let's listen to the Lord and obey Him as

1369. we just go through a time, attitude of

1370. prayer, listen to God, take it seriously,

  1371. and respond to Him.

1372. to God so far, listen to God.

1373. Right now, today, we need some

  1374. things.

  1375. Come with us.

  1376. Welcome to God.

  1377. Let's pray for us.

1378. And that's right for you.

  1379. Let's pray.

  1380. Will —

  1381. Please go ahead.

1382. And there's not as is,

  1383. you know?

  1384. Oh,

  1385. good reason.

1386. Just do love for you able to

  1387. to transform.
