  1. One of my favorite Old Testament stories is about the life of Joseph, and I'm going to

  2. guess that's a popular one among our church family.

  3. If you're familiar with it, then you know the story begins with Joseph living comfortably

  4. at home.

  5. He's the favored son of his father.

  6. Well, we soon learn in Genesis 37 that he had a dream of how he was going to one day be

  7. elevated to a position of power and glory over even his family.

  8. Joseph had 10 brothers.

  9. They were jealous for many reasons.

  10. He was the favored son.

  11. But they hated him even more after he told them about that dream.

  12. Well, Joseph's jealous brothers, their hatred was such that they wanted to kill him, or at

  13. least they talked about killing him.

  14. But some of the more, I'd say, less violent ones talked them out of it, and they sort of,

  15. I guess you might say, to reach the compromise, they sold him into slavery in Egypt.

  16. Well, as a slave in Egypt, Joseph demonstrated he was really a man of faith.

  17. Joseph is really in the Old Testament and all the Bible, one of the great men of uncompromising

  18. faith and trust and confidence in God.

  19. And he was put to the test being sold in slavery in a foreign country.

  20. But he was faithful to God in the way that he lived.

  21. And he was faithful in the circumstances to serve his master, his owner, as faithfully as he could.

  22. Well, it was noticed.

  23. He was such a man of integrity that his owner put him in charge of everything he owned.

  24. But somewhere along the way, he was falsely accused of a crime against his owner's wife

  25. and unjustly thrown into prison.

  26. Now, as a man in prison, formerly a slave, you would think he's hit rock bottom.

  27. He's just going to give up, pray to die.

  28. But he didn't.

  29. He was faithful as a man of God, a man of integrity in the prison.

  30. And he was even put in charge of some things in the prison.

  31. Well, about 17 years after his downward spiral began with being sold into slavery,

  32. Joseph's dream came true.

  33. God elevated him to a place of real power and glory, second in command over all Egypt.

  34. Now, this eventually led to his brothers who came to Egypt looking for food.

  35. bowing down before him, just like he had said in the dream.

  36. Now, from that position of power and glory, Joseph saved his family from starvation

  37. and saved or preserved, what you might say, the foundation for the future nature, future nation of Israel.

  38. Because the people of Israel came from Joseph's family.

  39. Now, that is certainly an unlikely sounding path to a position of power and glory, isn't it?

  40. But if you know the story of Joseph, it was all planned.

  41. That was by God's design.

  42. He didn't make those brothers hate him and set him into slavery.

  43. But God used what they did to accomplish his good purpose, the ultimate good of Joseph, his family,

  44. and through the nation of Israel and Jesus, all the world.

  45. Now, Joseph lets us know he understood all that happened to him, good and bad.

  46. It was a part of God's plan.

  47. He makes it known in what has really become a memorable statement to his brothers toward the end of the book of Genesis.

  48. He looked at his brothers and he said,

  49. As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good,

  50. to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today.

  51. Now, what I want us to think about now is that Joseph's path to glory is really not all that unusual.

  52. More often than not, that's how God works in the lives of his people, including his son, Jesus.

  53. We saw in last week's study, Philippians chapter 2, verses 5 through 8,

    Philippians 2:5–8

  54. that Jesus has always existed as the son of God in glory in heaven.

  55. He did not, his origins are not, cannot be traced to the stable in Bethlehem.

  56. He left the glory of heaven to be born into this world.

  57. He humbled himself to become a man, to become a slave, to become a prisoner who was actually executed by crucifixion,

  58. the most humiliating, degrading, and torturous death that the Romans could think up in the first century.

  59. Today, I want us to look at how God elevated Jesus, exalted Jesus to the highest position in all the universe.

  60. The position of power and glory over all things, following his humbling himself.

  61. Turn, if you would, to Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  62. Philippians 2.

  63. And what I want us to do is read what we looked at last week, verses 5 through 8,

  64. where we see Jesus starting out in heaven, equal with God, fully God,

  65. but he didn't hold on to it.

  66. He didn't just use it for himself.

  67. He laid aside that glory for us.

  68. Let's look at it.

  69. Philippians chapter 2, beginning in verse 5.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  70. After he had told them, told these church people just like us,

  71. to do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility, count each other more significant than yourself,

  72. that each of you look not only to his own interests, but also the interests of others.

  73. How in the world are we going to do that?

  74. Well, he tells us,

  75. have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

  76. who, though he was in the form of God,

  77. he's always existed.

  78. He's divine, the Son of God.

  79. Did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

  80. or a thing to be held on to,

  81. or a thing to be used just for himself or his own advantage,

  82. but emptied himself,

  83. laid aside that glory.

  84. He didn't cease to be God,

  85. but he didn't use what he had for just himself.

  86. But he emptied himself by taking the form of a servant,

  87. a slave,

  88. being born in the likeness of men,

  89. and being found in human form,

  90. he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,

  91. even death on a cross,

  92. shameful, degrading, torturous.

  93. That's what we looked at last week.

  94. But look on in verse 9,

  95. therefore, as a result of Christ humbling himself like he did,

  96. God has highly exalted him

  97. and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

  98. so that the name of Jesus,

  99. every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

  100. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

  101. to the glory of God the Father.

  102. As we go through this passage,

  103. I want you to think,

  104. grasp hold of this idea.

  105. The path of Jesus,

  106. that was the path of Joseph,

  107. and it's the path of you and me as Christians.

  108. Paul wants us to see that.

  109. He wants us to see in this.

  110. So he's writing to a church.

  111. There's some problems with unity in the church.

  112. He's trying to help them to see,

  113. humble yourself,

  114. love one another,

  115. serve one another.

  116. Don't just look out for yourself.

  117. And he points to Jesus.

  118. Have this attitude.

  119. But then,

  120. in verse 9,

  121. he's pointing out,

  122. if you humble yourself,

  123. one day God will make it worthwhile.

  124. For just as he raised up his son,

  125. lifted him from that lowly position,

  126. one day he will lift you up.

  127. The Bible makes it clear,

  128. this is God's normal way.

  129. I want you to look at what is said in Romans 8,

    Romans 8:16

  130. verses 16 and 17.

  131. Paul writes,

  132. the Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit

  133. that we're children of God,

  134. and if children,

  135. then heirs.

  136. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ,

  137. provided we suffer with Him,

  138. in order that we may also be glorified with Him.

  139. Think about what he's saying there.

  140. He's talking about how God calls us to be

  141. sacrificially faithful,

  142. even suffer.

  143. But that's not the end of the story.

  144. There's a time coming,

  145. it may be in heaven only for most of us,

  146. but that'll be for eternity.

  147. But the time is coming

  148. when we,

  149. you and me,

  150. will be glorified with Jesus.

  151. Peter says it like this,

  152. humble yourselves therefore

  153. under the mighty hand of God,

  154. so that at the proper time,

  155. He may exalt you.

  156. What we're going to look at this morning

  157. is not some isolated thought

  158. about Christians being honored,

  159. exalted,

  160. lifted up,

  161. elevated,

  162. blessed by God.

  163. It's found throughout the New Testament

  164. as an incentive to you and me.

  165. Live the Christian life

  166. as a faithful follower of Jesus,

  167. and it may cost you.

  168. You may suffer physically.

  169. You may not make all the money

  170. that you have the ability to make

  171. if you follow the path

  172. that God lays out for you.

  173. You may not be as popular

  174. as you would like to be

  175. and maybe could be

  176. if you took the wrong direction.

  177. The Christian life,

  178. regardless of what Joel Osteen

  179. and other positive thinkers say,

  180. the Christian life is not

  181. your best life now.

  182. Most,

  183. I have to watch myself.

  184. The most utterly ridiculous

  185. book title by a Christian

  186. that I can think of,

  187. everything that the Bible says

  188. is contrary to the idea.

  189. This life and this world

  190. is our best life.

  191. The best is yet to come.

  192. And what we're looking at this morning

  193. is a guarantee

  194. that just as God raised Jesus up

  195. from his lowly position

  196. that he chose

  197. to serve God's purpose,

  198. he will raise us up

  199. one day.

  200. Let's do a quick review.

  201. I mean a quick review

  202. of what we looked at last week.

  203. Number one,

  204. we looked last week

  205. we need to look at Jesus

  206. as the ultimate model

  207. for what it means

  208. to be unselfish.

  209. He is the ultimate model.

  210. And it begins by developing

  211. an unselfish attitude.

  212. It all begins with our mind,

  213. our thinking,

  214. our attitude.

  215. If you haven't read it,

  216. look in this week's newsletter.

  217. A great article

  218. by Chuck Swindoll

  219. on the importance of attitude,

  220. the power of attitude,

  221. and the fact that we choose

  222. our attitude.

  223. Last week we looked also

  224. at number B.

  225. We must not hold tightly

  226. to all of our rights.

  227. And I emphasized last week,

  228. we're talking about

  229. we can't hold on to our rights

  230. as brothers and sisters

  231. living and working together

  232. in this church.

  233. We can't hold on

  234. to all of our rights at home.

  235. and have a healthy family.

  236. We're not talking about

  237. never using your rights

  238. as an American citizen

  239. or at your company

  240. or in other settings.

  241. The Apostle Paul

  242. insisted upon his rights

  243. as a Roman citizen

  244. on several occasions

  245. recorded in the book of Acts

  246. to save himself

  247. from beatings,

  248. from imprisonment,

  249. and what would have been death.

  250. We don't have to give up

  251. all of our rights

  252. and just be a doormat

  253. to the world.

  254. That's not what this passage

  255. is talking about.

  256. That's not what Jesus did.

  257. But we are called

  258. to humble ourselves

  259. in this family of faith

  260. and serve one another.

  261. Don't think of anybody

  262. better than you.

  263. Don't think of yourself

  264. being better than anyone.

  265. And certainly not in the home.

  266. You know,

  267. I've talked about,

  268. you know,

  269. we can't think of ourselves

  270. as kings and queens at home.

  271. But here's the thought.

  272. So I've had more feedback

  273. about that than anything.

  274. If you,

  275. as a husband,

  276. if you want

  277. to think of your wife

  278. and treat her like a queen,

  279. good for you.

  280. Ladies,

  281. you can't demand it.

  282. If a husband,

  283. love your wife

  284. as Jesus loved the church,

  285. Paul says.

  286. If you want to think of her

  287. as a queen,

  288. treat her that way.

  289. Ladies,

  290. if you want to think

  291. of your husband

  292. as a king

  293. and treat him like that,

  294. good for you.

  295. When I said that

  296. in the first service,

  297. I looked at Jesus,

  298. I looked at Lisa

  299. and she said,

  300. uh-uh,

  301. just like that.

  302. She wasn't going to do it.

  303. It's a thought,

  304. but it's not going to happen.

  305. We can't demand

  306. our own rights,

  307. but consider yourself

  308. blessed

  309. if there are people

  310. in your life

  311. who sacrificially

  312. show their love

  313. to you.

  314. Number three,

  315. we looked at last week,

  316. we must humble ourselves

  317. and obey God

  318. sacrificially.

  319. As Christians,

  320. we can never,

  321. think about it this way,

  322. we can never look at God

  323. and say to Him,

  324. I won't go that far.

  325. I'll do certain things,

  326. but I won't go that far.

  327. We don't tell God that.

  328. Whatever sacrifice

  329. He calls you

  330. or me to make,

  331. we've got to be

  332. obedient children

  333. and say,

  334. yes, Lord.

  335. We can also say,

  336. and we need to say,

  337. help me, Lord.

  338. He'll give us the grace

  339. to do whatever

  340. He calls us to do.

  341. Now,

  342. the Lord's attitude

  343. of unselfishness

  344. and humility,

  345. that of Jesus,

  346. it is radical.

  347. It is costly.

  348. But the next verses,

  349. 9 through 11,

  350. Paul makes it clear

  351. it is worth

  352. the sacrifice.

  353. Number two,

  354. we need to look to Jesus

  355. as the ultimate model

  356. for how God exalts

  357. the unselfish.

  358. unselfish.

  359. Paul wastes no time

  360. in making it clear

  361. God exalts the humble.

  362. He exalts those

  363. who humble themselves.

  364. Look again now,

  365. first part of verse 9.

  366. Therefore,

  367. God has highly exalted Him.

  368. I want you to think

  369. about what happened

  370. to Jesus

  371. after He was crucified

  372. and buried.

  373. Now,

  374. think about it.

  375. Jesus died on the cross,

  376. paid the penalty

  377. for our sins.

  378. He cried out,

  379. it is finished.

  380. The penalty

  381. has been paid.

  382. The wrath of God

  383. has been fully satisfied.

  384. He was buried.

  385. First thing,

  386. He arose from the grave.

  387. God raised Him

  388. from the dead.

  389. We're very familiar

  390. with the idea

  391. of the resurrection,

  392. the New Testament teaching

  393. about the resurrection.

  394. That's what our faith

  395. is built upon.

  396. If there is no resurrection,

  397. there is no Christian faith.

  398. If there is no resurrection,

  399. we are absolute fools

  400. fools

  401. to be followers of Jesus,

  402. Paul said.

  403. So we don't need to really

  404. dwell on the resurrection.

  405. As Christians,

  406. we're convinced of that,

  407. surely.

  408. So let's look secondly.

  409. Jesus ascended into heaven

  410. after making numerous

  411. appearances

  412. to His disciples

  413. for 40 days

  414. following His resurrection.

  415. You can find that

  416. at the end of the Gospels,

  417. Matthew, Mark, and John,

  418. and at the first of Acts.

  419. Now I want you to notice

  420. what happened

  421. after Jesus had done

  422. whatever it is

  423. He needed to do

  424. with His disciples,

  425. teaching them,

  426. preparing them

  427. for what was going to happen.

  428. He ascended into heaven.

  429. Look at it.

  430. It's in Acts,

  431. the first chapter.

  432. And when He had said

  433. these things,

  434. as they were looking on,

  435. He was lifted up,

  436. and a cloud took Him

  437. out of their sight,

  438. and while they were

  439. gazing into heaven,

  440. He went behind,

  441. He went.

  442. Behold,

  443. two men stood by them

  444. in white robes

  445. and said,

  446. Men of Galilee,

  447. why do you stand

  448. looking into the heaven?

  449. This Jesus

  450. who was taken up

  451. from you into heaven

  452. will come in the same way

  453. as you saw Him

  454. go into heaven.

  455. Jesus died,

  456. was buried.

  457. He arose.

  458. He was seen.

  459. Forty days,

  460. it was real.

  461. Then He ascended

  462. into heaven.

  463. He left this earth

  464. and vanished.

  465. He didn't go to a,

  466. you know,

  467. place like you could go

  468. on a rocket ship.

  469. I don't know.

  470. I've never been there,

  471. neither have you,

  472. but sort of like He

  473. went behind a cloud,

  474. He entered another dimension

  475. of time

  476. or of no time.

  477. And then what happened next?

  478. After He disappeared,

  479. well, God exalted Him,

  480. elevated Him,

  481. raised Him,

  482. and seated Him

  483. at His right hand.

  484. What we've read

  485. in Philippians 2,

  486. 9 through 11

  487. is all about

  488. what happened.

  489. Jesus was exalted,

  490. raised,

  491. elevated to this

  492. supreme place

  493. of power and authority

  494. and glory in heaven.

  495. But there's many passages

  496. like this

  497. in Acts 2, 33

  498. where it talks about

  499. how Jesus was

  500. therefore exalted

  501. to the right hand

  502. of God,

  503. the position of power

  504. and authority.

  505. Now I want you to think

  506. about what we're talking about.

  507. Here's the point.

  508. Jesus humbled Himself

  509. to the point of submitting

  510. to death on the cross

  511. to fulfill God's eternal plan

  512. to save sinful people

  513. like you and me.

  514. Then God acts

  515. to raise Jesus

  516. from the dead,

  517. bring Him back into heaven,

  518. place Him

  519. in the most powerful,

  520. prominent,

  521. glorious position

  522. that exists,

  523. the right hand of God.

  524. Paul wants us

  525. to understand this

  526. but to show how

  527. God will exalt

  528. all of us

  529. one day

  530. if we are faithful

  531. to do like Jesus

  532. and humble ourselves

  533. and unselfishly serve God

  534. and other people

  535. that God wants us to serve

  536. even to the point

  537. of sacrificing.

  538. Now,

  539. Jesus also assures us

  540. of this

  541. in a statement

  542. that you consider

  543. it's a warning

  544. and a comfort.

  545. Look at this.

  546. He said,

  547. for whoever exalts himself

  548. will be humbled.

  549. That's important.

  550. You might be thinking

  551. to yourself,

  552. you won't say it out loud

  553. sitting in church

  554. but you might think

  555. to yourself,

  556. I just can't go

  557. but so low.

  558. Say it this way,

  559. I can't go

  560. but so low

  561. on my own.

  562. God has a way

  563. to humble us,

  564. put our face

  565. in the dirt

  566. if necessary.

  567. Jesus said,

  568. for whoever exalts himself

  569. will be humbled

  570. and whoever

  571. humbles himself

  572. will be exalted.

  573. See,

  574. this is just

  575. an idea,

  576. a promise

  577. you might say.

  578. It's found throughout

  579. the New Testament.

  580. God

  581. exalts

  582. his humble people

  583. and

  584. this principle,

  585. that's this idea

  586. we're talking about.

  587. Somebody described it

  588. like this,

  589. in God's economy

  590. the way up

  591. is down.

  592. The way for Jesus,

  593. the way for him

  594. to be up

  595. in heaven

  596. exalted

  597. where every knee

  598. will bow

  599. and tongue confess

  600. that he's Lord.

  601. it happened

  602. by going

  603. into this world

  604. humbling himself

  605. as a servant,

  606. slave,

  607. prisoner,

  608. being executed.

  609. We humble ourselves

  610. and God lifts us up.

  611. That's the way it works.

  612. Now,

  613. let's look at the next thing.

  614. God determines

  615. the extent

  616. of the exaltation.

  617. Here's where

  618. we want us to understand.

  619. What we're going

  620. to read now

  621. is unique

  622. because Jesus

  623. is the unique

  624. Son of God.

  625. I don't want

  626. to carry this idea

  627. to any extreme

  628. because the Bible

  629. doesn't.

  630. Certainly,

  631. God

  632. will exalt us

  633. if we're faithful

  634. as we've been

  635. looking at it.

  636. But we will never

  637. be exalted

  638. like Jesus.

  639. None of us

  640. have ever started out

  641. like Jesus,

  642. the divine

  643. Son of God

  644. in heaven.

  645. None of us

  646. have truly

  647. humbled ourselves

  648. to the point

  649. that Jesus did.

  650. And none of us

  651. will ever be raised

  652. to such a supreme

  653. place of honor

  654. and glory

  655. and power

  656. like Jesus.

  657. So don't think

  658. that for a minute.

  659. Let's look now

  660. at the unique

  661. exaltation

  662. of Jesus.

  663. Jesus received

  664. the name

  665. that is above

  666. every name.

  667. Look at it,

  668. verse 9.

  669. And bestowed

  670. on him

  671. the name

  672. that's above

  673. every name.

  674. But Paul

  675. doesn't say

  676. what that name

  677. is exactly.

  678. But it most

  679. likely,

  680. in all probability,

  681. in most every

  682. commentator I've

  683. ever read,

  684. the name

  685. is Lord.

  686. We can think

  687. that because

  688. the first time

  689. it's used

  690. in this section

  691. and he's

  692. talking about

  693. Jesus,

  694. is in verse 11.

  695. After he is

  696. exalted,

  697. it says,

  698. and every tongue

  699. will confess

  700. that Jesus

  701. Christ is Lord.

  702. And also the name

  703. Lord here

  704. in this New Testament,

  705. it refers to

  706. God's most

  707. sacred name

  708. in the Old Testament,

  709. Yahweh

  710. or Jehovah.

  711. And the idea

  712. is God

  713. the Father

  714. bestowed upon

  715. his obedient

  716. son,

  717. the highest,

  718. most holy

  719. name

  720. he could give.

  721. His own

  722. name.

  723. Here's what

  724. I want us to

  725. understand.

  726. When Jesus

  727. returns to this

  728. world one day,

  729. I might need

  730. to say it this way.

  731. The Bible

  732. is a

  733. supernatural

  734. book.

  735. The Christian

  736. faith is a

  737. supernatural

  738. faith.

  739. You know,

  740. we live our

  741. days,

  742. seven days a week,

  743. 24-7.

  744. We live in the

  745. here and now.

  746. We see,

  747. we think,

  748. we hear,

  749. we feel.

  750. But there is

  751. more to

  752. life

  753. than what we

  754. see and

  755. think and

  756. feel and

  757. touch.

  758. There's a

  759. supernatural

  760. dimension.

  761. If you're a

  762. Christian,

  763. you have to

  764. believe in the

  765. supernatural,

  766. that Jesus

  767. is the Son of

  768. God who came

  769. from heaven,

  770. that he died

  771. on the cross

  772. as a

  773. substitute for

  774. sinners,

  775. that he

  776. died,

  777. the spiritual

  778. as well as

  779. physical death,

  780. that he arose

  781. from the grave,

  782. went back in

  783. heaven.

  784. That's

  785. supernatural.

  786. We don't

  787. see that.

  788. We can't

  789. reproduce that.

  790. We have to

  791. accept that by

  792. faith.

  793. And likewise,

  794. we have to

  795. really believe,

  796. just as sure as

  797. we're here in

  798. person right now,

  799. one day,

  800. Jesus Christ

  801. will come back

  802. to this world

  803. in great

  804. power and

  805. authority.

  806. Here's my

  807. point here.

  808. He's the

  809. King of

  810. King and

  811. Lord of

  812. Lords now.

  813. When Jesus

  814. comes back,

  815. he is not

  816. going to come

  817. back as a

  818. little powerless

  819. baby in a

  820. stable.

  821. He's not going

  822. to come back

  823. into this world

  824. as the

  825. suffering

  826. servant

  827. man

  828. that he was

  829. the first time.

  830. when Jesus

  831. comes back

  832. in this world,

  833. he's going to

  834. come in great

  835. awesome power

  836. and authority

  837. and glory.

  838. And if we're

  839. alive and we

  840. see him,

  841. there's going to

  842. be cold chills

  843. going up and

  844. down us.

  845. We may just

  846. pass out in

  847. awe of what

  848. we see because

  849. then it won't

  850. be by faith.

  851. It'll be by

  852. sight.

  853. That's how he's

  854. going to come

  855. back into

  856. this world.

  857. Now,

  858. Jesus received

  859. the name that

  860. every created

  861. being in the

  862. universe will

  863. bow before on

  864. judgment day

  865. and confess he

  866. really is Lord.

  867. Look at this

  868. in verses 10

  869. and 11.

  870. So that at the

  871. name of Jesus,

  872. every knee should

  873. bow in heaven

  874. and on earth

  875. and under the

  876. earth and every

  877. tongue confess

  878. that Jesus Christ

  879. is Lord.

  880. I want to make

  881. this simple.

  882. I think what

  883. Paul is saying

  884. there is

  885. is that every

  886. intelligent,

  887. rationally

  888. thinking,

  889. created being

  890. in the

  891. universe is

  892. going to bow

  893. before Jesus

  894. and going to

  895. confess he

  896. is the

  897. sovereign Lord

  898. of the

  899. universe.

  900. Now,

  901. when that

  902. happens,

  903. or think about

  904. it this way,

  905. if we're alive

  906. when Jesus

  907. comes back,

  908. or if you die

  909. and go and

  910. stand before

  911. him,

  912. it's going to

  913. be a great

  914. day for

  915. everyone who

  916. has a

  917. relationship with

  918. Jesus during

  919. their earthly

  920. lives.

  921. You see,

  922. we who are

  923. Christians today,

  924. if we know

  925. Jesus through

  926. faith,

  927. trusting him,

  928. loving him,

  929. talking to him

  930. in prayer,

  931. truly seeking

  932. to follow him,

  933. if that's

  934. our life

  935. here on

  936. earth,

  937. then when

  938. he comes

  939. back,

  940. and we sort

  941. of come to

  942. from the

  943. awe and

  944. wonder and

  945. being just

  946. struck,

  947. you know,

  948. speechless,

  949. we're going

  950. to smile.

  951. Because that's

  952. our Lord that

  953. we know and

  954. love,

  955. and he's

  956. promised to

  957. take care of

  958. us for all

  959. eternity.

  960. we're going

  961. to want to

  962. confess him

  963. as our Lord.

  964. We're going

  965. to jump

  966. down on our

  967. knees,

  968. fall on our

  969. knees to

  970. honor him.

  971. Now don't

  972. worry if you're

  973. not able to

  974. bow now.

  975. Sometimes your

  976. knees wear out

  977. in this life.

  978. Some of you

  979. have had yours

  980. replaced.

  981. Well, when

  982. that day comes,

  983. we'll have a

  984. new body.

  985. So we'll be

  986. able to have

  987. good knees,

  988. we'll have

  989. good knees

  990. and be able

  991. to do this

  992. without any

  993. effort.

  994. Now, for

  995. those who do

  996. not trust Jesus

  997. during their

  998. earthly life,

  999. when he comes

  1000. back or when

  1001. they die and

  1002. go stand before

  1003. Jesus, this is

  1004. going to be a

  1005. day of nothing

  1006. but horror.

  1007. Every unbeliever

  1008. is going to be

  1009. forced to bow

  1010. before Jesus

  1011. and confess

  1012. that he is

  1013. truly the

  1014. Lord of all.

  1015. They're going

  1016. to do that

  1017. just before

  1018. they're ushered

  1019. away from

  1020. him, spend

  1021. eternity in

  1022. hell.

  1023. On that day

  1024. when Jesus

  1025. comes back,

  1026. even the

  1027. devil and

  1028. all his

  1029. demons are

  1030. going to be

  1031. forced to

  1032. confess that

  1033. Jesus Christ

  1034. really is

  1035. Lord before

  1036. they wind up

  1037. in the lake

  1038. of fire.

  1039. God's

  1040. coming back to

  1041. God's

  1042. God's

  1043. coming back to

  1044. him.

  1045. The day

  1046. will come

  1047. when everybody

  1048. you know

  1049. will know

  1050. the truth,

  1051. believe the

  1052. truth that

  1053. Jesus is the

  1054. eternal Son of

  1055. God.

  1056. Everybody not

  1057. only know that,

  1058. but everyone

  1059. will bow before

  1060. him.

  1061. everyone will

  1062. confess that.

  1063. As surely as

  1064. I'm standing

  1065. here and

  1066. you're sitting

  1067. there, that's

  1068. going to happen

  1069. one day.

  1070. That's what the

  1071. Bible teaches.

  1072. We'll all be

  1073. there.

  1074. We'll probably

  1075. be able to

  1076. remember, we'll

  1077. have perfect minds

  1078. then, we'll be

  1079. able to remember,

  1080. we talked about

  1081. this today.

  1082. You'll be there,

  1083. you'll see Jesus,

  1084. you will bow and

  1085. confess that he is

  1086. the Lord of this

  1087. universe.

  1088. But let me ask

  1089. you, will you do

  1090. that willingly,

  1091. wholeheartedly,

  1092. enthusiastically,

  1093. because you know

  1094. Jesus is your

  1095. Savior and Lord

  1096. right now?

  1097. Or, let's be real

  1098. honest, just think,

  1099. you know who you

  1100. are, how you think,

  1101. how you believe, or

  1102. if you die today

  1103. and stand before

  1104. him or he comes

  1105. back, will you

  1106. actually be forced

  1107. to bow before him

  1108. and confess him

  1109. because you never

  1110. do that now?

  1111. If Jesus is not

  1112. your Lord, I want

  1113. to encourage you,

  1114. wake up now

  1115. before it's eternally

  1116. too late.

  1117. If you're not

  1118. already, truly,

  1119. by faith,

  1120. bowing before him

  1121. in true, humble

  1122. submission,

  1123. confessing him

  1124. as your Lord,

  1125. your Savior,

  1126. your friend,

  1127. that you love,

  1128. that you want to

  1129. be like,

  1130. just admit that

  1131. to God.

  1132. Admit that your

  1133. faith is not,

  1134. what you've been

  1135. calling faith is not

  1136. real.

  1137. humble yourself,

  1138. repent of your

  1139. sin, change your

  1140. mind,

  1141. trust Jesus

  1142. that he paid the

  1143. penalty for your

  1144. sins when he died

  1145. on the cross and

  1146. call upon him to

  1147. save you, forgive

  1148. you, make you a

  1149. child of God right

  1150. now.

  1151. It may be that

  1152. right now, for the

  1153. first time truly in

  1154. your life, you need

1155. to do this and bow

  1156. before Jesus as your

  1157. Lord, your King.

1158. We need to all make

  1159. sure that we stand

  1160. before Jesus on

  1161. judgment day.

  1162. Our confession

  1163. will be a willing

1164. one and a one of

  1165. joy and not a

  1166. forced confession

  1167. of regret.

  1168. One final point,

  1169. quickly.

  1170. God receives the

  1171. glory of exaltation.

  1172. It's all to the

  1173. glory of God the

  1174. Father at the end

  1175. of verse 11.

  1176. It's important for

  1177. us to understand

  1178. that whatever

  1179. glory we will

  1180. receive, and we

  1181. will one day, you

  1182. and me as

  1183. Christians, it is

  1184. not God's payment

  1185. for your good

  1186. efforts, for your

  1187. acts of service.

  1188. Don't let that

  1189. taint a correct

  1190. view of what's

  1191. going to happen

  1192. on that day.

  1193. We're going to

  1194. see next week

  1195. that our best

  1196. desires and

  1197. effort to serve

  1198. God come as

  1199. a result of God

  1200. graciously working

  1201. in us to

  1202. motivate us.

  1203. Look at this

  1204. from Philippians

  1205. 2.13.

  1206. For it is God

  1207. who works in you

  1208. both to will and

  1209. to work for his

  1210. good pleasure.

1211. God exalts us to a

  1212. position of glory in

1213. heaven or even to a

  1214. place of prominence in

  1215. this world.

  1216. And God sometimes

  1217. does that.

  1218. Joseph, he didn't

  1219. just get to a

  1220. position of glory and

  1221. honor in heaven.

  1222. He received it on

  1223. earth.

  1224. Some people do.

  1225. Most of us won't.

  1226. Some will.

  1227. But whether the

  1228. glory we have or

  1229. receive in heaven or

  1230. even some in this

  1231. world, we've always

1232. got to be quick to

1233. give all the glory to

  1234. God, the praise, the

  1235. credit for graciously

1236. working in us so that

  1237. we might experience that

  1238. glory, that honor.

  1239. Now, last week and

  1240. this week, we've

1241. looked at how Jesus is

  1242. our model in two

  1243. ways, verses 5-11.

  1244. First, the Lord shows

  1245. us how to live

  1246. unselfishly and

  1247. humbly.

  1248. Do you have that

  1249. attitude?

  1250. Do you have the

  1251. attitude to humble

  1252. yourself, to be

  1253. unselfish, to serve

  1254. your brothers and

  1255. sisters in Christ in

  1256. this church, to serve

  1257. the people you live

  1258. with at home?

  1259. If you have that

  1260. attitude, point out

1261. some of the signs of

  1262. progress that you can

1263. see in your life that

1264. you are making as you

  1265. relate to people in

  1266. this church and at

  1267. home.

1268. But if you don't see

  1269. any signs of progress,

1270. ask God to help you to

  1271. change your attitude

  1272. now.

  1273. And not only to

  1274. change your attitude,

  1275. but to start changing

  1276. your behavior.

  1277. Second thing, the Lord

  1278. shows us that our

  1279. Heavenly Father will

  1280. more than make it

  1281. worthwhile to

  1282. sacrificially obey

  1283. Him.

  1284. Do you believe that?

  1285. Do you believe it's

  1286. worth the price?

  1287. Some of you delayed

  1288. working to get an

  1289. education.

  1290. You were a poor

  1291. student.

1292. You just put on hold

  1293. making money.

1294. Some of you have done

  1295. other things in your

  1296. life where you

  1297. sacrificed, you waited

  1298. because you anticipated

  1299. the reward would be

  1300. worthwhile.

1301. That's how we are to

1302. live our lives in this

  1303. world, serving the

  1304. Lord.

  1305. Trusting that no

  1306. matter what we do,

1307. no matter how much it

1308. may cost us, He really

  1309. will make it worthwhile.

  1310. Do you believe that?

1311. And does your life back

  1312. it up?

1313. If it doesn't, if you

  1314. know you're not a

  1315. Christian, ask God to

  1316. save you now.

1317. Or if you are a

  1318. Christian but you think

1319. to yourself, in light of

  1320. what we've been looking

1321. at in Philippians, I'm not

1322. really ready to see Jesus

  1323. face to face.

  1324. Admit that.

1325. Talk to the Lord about

  1326. it.

  1327. Confess your sin.

1328. Draw back close to Him.

  1329. Paul, Jesus, Peter, God

  1330. through His Word promises

1331. us if we will serve Him

  1332. faithfully, sacrificially,

  1333. pay whatever price He

1334. requires, one day we will

1335. find an experience for all

  1336. eternity.

  1337. It was worth it.

  1338. Let's pray together.

  1339. Dear God,

1340. dear God, help us to see

  1341. now what our response

  1342. should be.

1343. And help us to make it.

  1344. And let's just in

  1345. attitude of prayer listen

1346. to the Lord and do what

1347. He's telling us to do.

  1348. Let's just bow together,

1349. pray, and respond to the

  1350. Lord.

  1351. Let You

  1352. Yeah.

  1353. We're going so forward

  1354. you

1355. That's what we calls you

1356. to do the comfort of

1357. the Lord and that it is

  1358. that If your heart

  1359. that leads us to
