  1. There was a time in my life when I enjoyed getting up at four o'clock in the morning

  2. and driving from Pendleton to near Abbeville, Parsons Mountain,

  3. sitting out in the cold, black, dark, waiting on a buck to come out at daylight.

  4. I don't enjoy that anymore.

  5. I don't like to be cold like that anymore.

  6. But I do miss some things about it.

  7. Some of you know this, even if you're not a hunter living out in the country

  8. or just living away from a place where there's just no light around.

  9. On those cold, clear mornings in the woods before the first light of dawn,

  10. the stars just fill the sky with bright, flickering lights

  11. that really just illuminate against that black pitch, black, dark sky.

  12. You know, that is an awesome display, isn't it, of God's glory, His splendor.

  13. Or are you aware that God wants us to live such Christ-like lives

  14. in this world of spiritual and moral darkness

  15. that we, you and me, that we stand out like stars

  16. in a pitch black, dark sky?

  17. And we are awesome displays of God's grace and God's glory.

  18. I want you to turn with me to Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  19. and see how God calls every one of us

  20. to so live our lives as followers of Jesus in this world

  21. that we do stand out as light

  22. in the midst of this world's darkness.

  23. Philippians chapter 2, and today we'll begin in verse 12.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  24. Paul says,

  25. Therefore, my beloved.

  26. Some translations say, therefore, my dear friends.

  27. This is just a reminder now

  28. as we've gone through this study in the book of Philippians.

  29. Paul has a special relationship with these people.

  30. These are overall faithful Christians.

  31. They've really supported him in a lot of ways.

  32. They've prayed for him.

  33. They sent money to meet his needs.

  34. They have been encouragers to him

  35. and he counts them as dear friends.

  36. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed,

  37. so now, not only as in my presence,

  38. but much more in my absence,

  39. work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

  40. for it is God who works in you

  41. both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

  42. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, arguing,

  43. that you may be blameless and innocent children of God

  44. without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,

  45. among whom you shine as lights in the world,

  46. holding fast to the word of life,

  47. so that in the day of Christ,

  48. I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain,

  49. even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice,

  50. sacrificial offering of your faith,

  51. I am glad and rejoice with you all.

  52. Likewise, you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

  53. I want us to note before we get into the body of the message,

  54. the word therefore in verse 12.

  55. Paul intends as he starts this section

  56. for us to recall what he's just said,

  57. which is what we looked at last week.

  58. In verses five through eight,

  59. we saw last week how Jesus is the model

  60. of how to humble ourself.

  61. He humbled himself by leaving the glory of heaven,

  62. coming into this world as a man, as a slave,

  63. and ultimately to die on the cross,

  64. to pay the penalty for our sins.

  65. We also saw in last week in verses nine through 11,

  66. how God lifted Jesus from the grave

  67. and exalted him, elevated him

  68. to the highest place of honor in the universe

  69. at his right hand.

  70. And there in that exalted place,

  71. Jesus is given the name Lord.

  72. And every knee in the universe

  73. will one day bow before him.

  74. Every tongue one day will confess,

  75. whether they want to or not,

  76. that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  77. Now what we find in verses 12 through 18

  78. is a description of how we,

  79. as Christians,

  80. who willingly bow before Jesus,

  81. who wholeheartedly honor him as Lord,

  82. what we're gonna find in these verses

  83. is how we are to live now

  84. under the Lordship of Jesus.

  85. So I want us to go through this passage

  86. with the understanding,

  87. what we're gonna be reading now

  88. is how we will live

  89. if Jesus is the Lord of our life.

  90. Let's look first.

  91. If Jesus is our Lord,

  92. it will be evident by the way

  93. that we relate to God.

  94. It'll be seen in our relationship with the Lord.

  95. First of all,

  96. we'll demonstrate our ongoing faith in God.

  97. We'll demonstrate that our faith is real,

  98. it's living,

  99. it's active,

  100. it is continuing

  101. from the time we were converted

  102. to this very moment.

  103. Look at the first phrase.

  104. Paul says,

  105. work out your salvation

  106. with fear and trembling.

  107. We need to be as clear

  108. about what this does not mean

  109. as what it does mean.

  110. Let me just say point blank.

  111. Paul is not saying

  112. that we work for our salvation

  113. or anything like that.

  114. James Boyce,

  115. in his commentary,

  116. he makes this very clear.

  117. I want you to look at it.

  118. He says,

  119. this verse does not say

  120. work for your salvation

  121. or work toward your salvation

  122. or work at your salvation.

  123. It says,

  124. work out your salvation.

  125. And no one can work his salvation out

  126. unless God has already worked it in.

  127. Paul is telling us,

  128. we who are writing to Christians,

  129. believers in Jesus,

  130. people that God has already

  131. brought about a new birth,

  132. he is saying,

  133. you live like the Christian you are.

  134. You show the world

  135. what it means to be

  136. a follower of Jesus.

  137. This is one way of him

  138. just saying,

  139. seek to grow and mature

  140. as the child of God

  141. that you really are

  142. by God's grace.

  143. Now,

  144. I think it's important

  145. that we note here

  146. how the word salvation

  147. is used

  148. throughout the New Testament.

  149. A lot of times,

  150. people have the idea

  151. that the word salvation

  152. or saved

  153. is just talking about

  154. our initial conversion.

  155. We repent of our sin

  156. and put our trust in Jesus.

  157. We are saved.

  158. We think about that.

  159. That's what salvation is.

  160. Well,

  161. that's only a part

  162. of how the word salvation

  163. is used

  164. in the New Testament.

  165. More often than not,

  166. in fact,

  167. the New Testament

  168. uses the word salvation

  169. to describe a process

  170. that takes place

  171. throughout our Christian lives.

  172. Let's look at it

  173. under three categories.

  174. First,

  175. salvation actually begins

  176. when we trust Christ.

  177. The biblical word,

  178. the theological word,

  179. is the word justification.

  180. When a person

  181. puts their faith

  182. and trust in Jesus,

  183. God looks at them

  184. at that moment

  185. and declares them

  186. to be righteous,

  187. justified,

  188. if you want to use

  189. that word.

  190. No matter who a person is,

  191. what they've done,

  192. how awful they have been,

  193. when they repent

  194. of their sin

  195. and trust Jesus,

  196. they become one

  197. with Jesus by faith.

  198. And when God

  199. looks at that person,

  200. they've not done

  201. one thing

  202. to please God

  203. their whole life.

  204. God looks at that person

  205. and declares

  206. they are right

  207. because united to Jesus,

  208. the penalty for their sin

  209. has been paid.

  210. United to Jesus,

  211. they have His righteousness,

  212. His obedience

  213. credited to their account.

  214. So, salvation begins

  215. when we trust Christ

  216. and we might call it,

  217. we might describe it

  218. like this,

  219. I have been saved.

  220. If you're a Christian,

  221. you might even say

  222. I was saved

  223. at a certain point

  224. in my life.

  225. That's good.

  226. But that's not the only way

  227. salvation is used.

  228. Salvation continues.

  229. Our salvation,

  230. your salvation,

  231. continues as we follow Christ.

  232. The theological word

  233. is sanctification.

  234. To be set apart.

  235. You are a saint

  236. if you're a Christian

  237. by virtue of

  238. God declaring you

  239. to be a saint.

  240. But from the moment

  241. He declares us

  242. to be righteous,

  243. a saint,

  244. He begins to work in us

  245. through His Spirit.

  246. When God saves us,

  247. He puts His Holy Spirit

  248. in us

  249. and from that point on

  250. He works in us

  251. to actually make us

  252. like Jesus.

  253. Now it's a

  254. lifelong process.

  255. In this room,

  256. we are spread out

  257. along the continuum

  258. of growing in Christ's likeness.

  259. Some people are just,

  260. you know,

  261. haven't grown a whole lot.

  262. Some have shown

  263. great strides

  264. in Christian maturity

  265. by God's grace.

  266. We're all somewhere

  267. on that line.

  268. When God saved us,

  269. put His Spirit in us,

  270. He began the process

  271. of making us

  272. more like Jesus.

  273. We could say like this,

  274. I am being saved

  275. right now

  276. as God works in us,

  277. developing us,

  278. our character

  279. to make us

  280. more like Jesus.

  281. Third way salvation

  282. is used,

  283. salvation concludes

  284. when we go

  285. to be with Jesus.

  286. One day,

  287. we're all going to die.

  288. If we're Christians,

  289. we're going to go

  290. to be with the Lord

  291. or He could return

  292. before we die.

  293. That's when we will

  294. be glorified.

  295. That's the word,

  296. the big word,

  297. glorification.

  298. That's when we will

  299. actually be made

  300. like Jesus

  301. without blemish.

  302. We've already talked

  303. about in a previous study.

  304. That's when we'll overcome

  305. or our sinful nature

  306. will be totally eradicated.

  307. We may describe that

  308. as I will be saved.

  309. Salvation will be complete.

  310. Paul is using

  311. the word salvation

  312. here in verse 12

  313. to describe how

  314. we continue

  315. to follow Jesus

  316. after our conversion.

  317. He's talking about

  318. our sanctification.

  319. When he says,

  320. work out your salvation,

  321. he could say,

  322. work out your sanctification.

  323. He's describing

  324. our growing relationship

  325. as children of God

  326. developing the character

  327. of Jesus.

  328. Jesus.

  329. Now,

  330. what does that mean?

  331. What does that look like

  332. if we grow?

  333. Well,

  334. in verses 14 through 16,

  335. Paul is explaining

  336. what it means,

  337. what it'll look like

  338. as we

  339. grow like this,

  340. as we work out

  341. our salvation.

  342. Look at this.

  343. He says,

  344. after he said,

  345. work out your salvation

  346. with fear and trembling

  347. for God works in you

  348. to will and work

  349. for his new pleasure.

  350. Do all things

  351. without grumbling

  352. or disputing,

  353. that you may be

  354. blameless and innocent,

  355. children of God

  356. without blemish

  357. in the midst

  358. of a crooked

  359. and twisted generation,

  360. among whom you shine

  361. as lights in the world,

  362. holding fast

  363. to the word of life.

  364. That's describing

  365. how we're to live,

  366. how we're to grow,

  367. how we're to mature,

  368. how we're to change.

  369. Now,

  370. let's just stop here

  371. for a moment.

  372. Look at yourself.

  373. Can you see signs

  374. that you are growing

  375. like these signs?

  376. Can you see signs

  377. that you are growing

  378. in living

  379. a Christ-like life?

  380. Can you see signs

  381. of spiritual growth?

  382. Think about it this way.

  383. Are you,

  384. more often than not,

  385. somebody who just grumbles,

  386. complains,

  387. whines,

  388. likes to argue

  389. about everything under the sun?

  390. Are you just basically

  391. a negative person?

  392. Do you easily

  393. take offense

  394. at something somebody says

  395. or the way they look at you

  396. or slight you?

  397. Do you like to talk about

  398. how life's not fair?

  399. You get the short end

  400. of the stick all the time.

  401. Deep down,

  402. you're halfway mad at God

  403. a lot of times

  404. because life doesn't work

  405. the way you think

  406. it ought to work,

  407. at least for you.

  408. more,

  409. now let's just be honest.

  410. Everybody gripes

  411. and complains at times.

  412. Everybody has a pity party

  413. at times.

  414. Everybody thinks

  415. life's not fair

  416. to me at times.

  417. Let's just be open

  418. and honest about that.

  419. But is that

  420. just the way you are?

  421. Is that your nature?

  422. Is that your character?

  423. Or,

  424. are you more often

  425. than not

  426. seeking to obey God?

  427. I mean,

  428. you really want to.

  429. You put forth the effort

  430. to do what you know

  431. God wants you to do.

  432. Do you more often

  433. than not

  434. see the needs

  435. of other people,

  436. think about other people,

  437. or instead of just

  438. always thinking

  439. about yourself?

  440. Do you more often

  441. than not

  442. not take offense?

  443. Not wear your

  444. feelings on your sleeve?

  445. Do you more often

  446. than not

  447. count your blessings,

  448. be thankful

  449. for what God

  450. has and is doing,

  451. what He's promised

  452. to do,

  453. rather than

  454. be disappointed?

  455. Are you quick

  456. to forgive?

  457. forgive?

  458. Well,

  459. cooperating with God

  460. as He works

  461. in us

  462. to make us

  463. more like Jesus,

  464. if we do that,

  465. we won't be doing

  466. all this

  467. grumbling

  468. and disputing,

  469. but we'll be

  470. developing this

  471. more blameless

  472. Christ-like character.

  473. That's just

  474. a fact.

  475. So look at yourself,

  476. evaluate yourself

  477. and where you are

  478. in your relationship

  479. with God.

  480. Now,

  481. as we do,

  482. as we cooperate

  483. with God,

  484. as He works

  485. in us,

  486. we need to take

  487. this very seriously.

  488. Look at what else

  489. He says.

  490. Work out your salvation

  491. with fear

  492. and trembling.

  493. God has graciously

  494. saved us,

  495. He's made us

  496. His children,

  497. and God wants us

  498. to know Him

  499. as our loving

  500. Heavenly Father.

  501. He wants us

  502. to have a close

  503. relationship with Him,

  504. be able to come

  505. into His presence

  506. and talk to Him,

  507. fellowship with Him,

  508. praise Him,

  509. thank Him.

  510. He does that.

  511. Jesus even taught us

  512. to pray,

  513. our Father.

  514. So,

  515. I don't want to

  516. minimize in any way

  517. the fact that we

  518. as Christians

  519. have a close

  520. relationship with God

  521. as a Father.

  522. But even as our

  523. Heavenly Father,

  524. God never ceases

  525. to be

  526. the God that He is,

  527. the holy,

  528. the pure,

  529. the awesome,

  530. the glorious,

  531. the sovereign God

  532. who's created

  533. all things

  534. and for whom

  535. everything exists.

  536. we must never lose

  537. a healthy fear

  538. or reverence

  539. for God

  540. no matter

  541. how long we live

  542. as Christians.

  543. We,

  544. you and me,

  545. as children of God,

  546. we should never cease

  547. to be in awe

  548. and wonder

  549. of who God is.

  550. A long time ago,

  551. I watched a movie

  552. that centered around

  553. the personal life

  554. of a fictitious

  555. President of the

  556. United States.

  557. The President's

  558. closest advisor

  559. was his

  560. lifelong friend.

  561. Late one night,

  562. they were

  563. in the White House

  564. shooting pool together,

  565. no one around,

  566. and talking about

  567. a serious issue.

  568. The advisor

  569. kept calling

  570. the President

  571. Mr. President.

  572. Yes,

  573. Mr. President,

  574. Mr. President,

  575. this and that.

  576. The President

  577. finally looked at him

  578. and said,

  579. we have known

  580. each other

  581. practically all

  582. of our lives.

  583. You are my

  584. closest friend.

  585. No one is here

  586. but you and me.

  587. Please quit

  588. calling me

  589. Mr. President

  590. and call me

  591. Phil.

  592. And without

  593. hesitating,

  594. the advisor

  595. said,

  596. yes,

  597. Mr. President.

  598. You see,

  599. he knew

  600. there are some

  601. relationships

  602. that we just

  603. must never

  604. lose sight

  605. of

  606. our

  607. superior's

  608. authority

  609. and dignity.

  610. And we always

  611. show respect.

  612. That's the way

  613. it should be

  614. in our relationship

  615. with God.

  616. call him

  617. father.

  618. Think about

  619. how much

  620. he loves us,

  621. loves you.

  622. How he called

  623. you to be

  624. his child.

  625. Enjoy

  626. closeness

  627. with him

  628. but never

  629. cease to

  630. also see

  631. him

  632. as the

  633. holy God

  634. that he is.

  635. And that we

  636. must always

  637. in how we

  638. approach him,

  639. talk to him,

  640. live before him,

  641. treat him

  642. with the utmost

  643. reverence

  644. and respect.

  645. If Jesus

  646. is our

  647. Lord,

  648. it'll be

  649. seen by our

  650. ongoing,

  651. continuing

  652. faith

  653. in God.

  654. Always remember,

  655. saving faith

  656. is continuing

  657. faith

  658. throughout the

  659. Bible.

  660. But also,

  661. if Jesus

  662. is our

  663. Lord,

  664. we'll

  665. demonstrate

  666. our ongoing

  667. obedience

  668. to God.

  669. Look at this

  670. next verse

  671. 13.

  672. For it is

  673. God who

  674. works in you

  675. both to

  676. will and

  677. to work

  678. for his

  679. good pleasure.

  680. This

  681. explains

  682. how

  683. we are

  684. to work

  685. out our

  686. own

  687. salvation

  688. because God

  689. is at work

  690. in us.

  691. We work

  692. out our

  693. own

  694. salvation

  695. with fear

  696. and trembling

  697. because God

  698. works in us

  699. giving us

  700. the desire

  701. and ability

  702. to please

  703. him.

  704. I put an

  705. article in

  706. this week's

  707. newsletter by

  708. Paul Tripp.

  709. It explains

  710. this verse,

  711. this whole

  712. concept very

  713. well.

  714. I especially

  715. like the way

  716. he describes

  717. some signs

  718. that God

  719. is working

  720. in us

  721. to will

  722. and work

  723. for his

  724. good pleasure.

  725. Look at

  726. this.

  727. Tripp

  728. says,

  729. so when

  730. you have

  731. a hunger

  732. to know

  733. what is

  734. right in

  735. God's

  736. eyes,

  737. think about

  738. this.

  739. Do you

  740. ever have

  741. that?

  742. So when

  743. you have

  744. a hunger

  745. to know

  746. what is

  747. right in

  748. God's

  749. eyes,

  750. when you

  751. care about

  752. his glory,

  753. when you

  754. willingly

  755. submit to

  756. his will,

  757. when you

  758. forsake

  759. your plan

  760. for his

  761. plan,

  762. and when

  763. you find

  764. joy in

  765. surrendering

  766. to his

  767. lordship,

  768. you know

  769. that you

  770. have been

  771. visited

  772. by rescuing

  773. grace.

  774. grace.

  775. Do you

  776. see signs

  777. in your

  778. life

  779. that God

  780. is giving

  781. you

  782. true

  783. desires,

  784. an act

  785. of the

  786. will

  787. kind of

  788. desire,

  789. and the

  790. ability

  791. to please

  792. him?

  793. Think about

  794. it.

  795. Can you

  796. look at

  797. your life,

  798. the way you

  799. think and

  800. the way

  801. you live,

  802. can you

  803. point to

  804. signs?

  805. I see

  806. that God

  807. is working

  808. in me,

  809. giving me

  810. these kind

  811. of desires

  812. to please

  813. him,

  814. enabling me

  815. to act

  816. on those

  817. desires.

  818. Let's think

  819. about how it

  820. actually would

  821. work out.

  822. Do you have

  823. a real desire

  824. to please

  825. God as a

  826. husband to

  827. your wife?

  828. Do you

  829. have a true

  830. heartfelt

  831. desire as

  832. a wife

  833. to be the

  834. kind that

  835. a wife

  836. or your

  837. husband

  838. that God

  839. wants you

  840. to be?

  841. As you

  842. think about

  843. being a

  844. parent at

  845. any age,

  846. do you

  847. have a

  848. desire to

  849. be a

  850. godly

  851. parent,

  852. to have

  853. the influence

  854. on your

  855. child that

  856. God wants

  857. you to

  858. have,

  859. to teach

  860. them and

  861. train them

  862. according to

  863. the way

  864. God has

  865. taught us

  866. in his

  867. word?

  868. Children,

  869. boys and

  870. girls,

  871. many of

  872. you in

  873. here,

  874. you would

  875. say,

  876. I am a

  877. Christian.

  878. Some of

  879. you I've

  880. baptized.

  881. Do you

  882. have a

  883. desire to

  884. honor your

  885. parents,

  886. to obey

  887. them because

  888. you know

  889. that's what

  890. God wants

  891. you to do?

  892. Do you

  893. have a

  894. kind of

  895. desire to

  896. be a

  897. Christian

  898. friend?

  899. you go

  900. to work

  901. tomorrow

  902. or today?

  903. Do you

  904. desire,

  905. have that

  906. God-given

  907. desire to

  908. be an

  909. employee or

  910. employer

  911. that truly

  912. honors God

  913. by the way

  914. you treat

  915. people and

  916. interact with

  917. people?

  918. Now,

  919. let's take it

  920. a step

  921. further.

  922. Do you

  923. act on

  924. those desires?

  925. do you

  926. willingly and

  927. regularly,

  928. nobody does

  929. it perfectly,

  930. nobody does

  931. it all the

  932. time,

  933. but do you

  934. willingly and

  935. purposefully

  936. say no

  937. to getting

  938. your way

  939. in your

  940. relationships

  941. at home?

  942. Do you

  943. willingly put

  944. forth the

  945. effort to

  946. serve your

  947. spouse,

  948. your children,

  949. your parents?

  950. This takes

  951. an act of

  952. God,

  953. your brothers

  954. and sisters.

  955. If we are

  956. Christians,

  957. the Spirit of

  958. God lives

  959. within us.

  960. What Paul is

  961. saying here,

  962. he gives us

  963. the desire,

  964. the will,

  965. the want

  966. to,

  967. to actually

  968. do or

  969. live this

  970. kind of

  971. life.

  972. Now,

  973. I want to

  974. be clear about

  975. what Paul is

  976. saying here in

  977. verse 13.

  978. Be clear.

  979. God is the

  980. one who gives

  981. us both the

  982. desire and

  983. the ability to

  984. live an obedient

  985. Christian life.

  986. So we are

  987. dependent upon

  988. God.

  989. We don't just

  990. muster this

  991. stuff up.

  992. God gives

  993. us the desire

  994. and then the

  995. ability to act

  996. on that desire

  997. to live a

  998. faithful Christian

  999. life.

  1000. So we are

  1001. dependent upon

  1002. God.

  1003. But we do

  1004. have to,

  1005. you and I,

  1006. we have to

  1007. act on the

  1008. desires.

  1009. We have to

  1010. actually put

  1011. forth the

  1012. effort to do

  1013. what God

  1014. calls us to

  1015. do.

  1016. So we must

  1017. discipline

  1018. ourselves in

  1019. order to obey

  1020. God.

  1021. The Christian

  1022. writer Jerry

  1023. Bridges says

  1024. that faithful

  1025. Christian living

  1026. requires that we

  1027. practice dependent

  1028. discipline.

  1029. Now here's a

  1030. good example

  1031. from the life

  1032. of Paul.

  1033. It comes from

  1034. Colossians chapter

  1035. one.

  1036. He's talking

  1037. about his

  1038. ministry, his

  1039. preaching.

  1040. He says, he,

  1041. that is Jesus,

  1042. is the one we

  1043. proclaim,

  1044. admonishing and

  1045. teaching everyone

  1046. with all wisdom

  1047. so that we may

  1048. present everyone

  1049. fully mature in

  1050. Christ.

  1051. To this end,

  1052. I strenuously

  1053. contend with

  1054. all the energy

  1055. Christ so

  1056. powerfully works

  1057. in me.

  1058. I want you to

  1059. see, Paul is

  1060. saying that he

  1061. disciplined

  1062. himself to

  1063. work hard at

  1064. his ministry.

  1065. I strenuously

  1066. contend.

  1067. If you read

  1068. in the book of

  1069. Acts and some

  1070. of his letters,

  1071. Paul worked

  1072. hard knowing

  1073. he was going

  1074. to be arrested,

  1075. beaten, put in

  1076. prison.

  1077. Sometimes he had

  1078. to support

  1079. himself.

  1080. He was a

  1081. tent maker.

  1082. And so

  1083. sometimes he'd

  1084. work all day

  1085. and preach late

  1086. at night or he

  1087. would preach

  1088. throughout the day

  1089. and work late

  1090. at night to

  1091. support himself.

  1092. Paul worked

  1093. hard to the

  1094. point of exhaustion

  1095. at times.

  1096. That's what the

  1097. word is talking

  1098. about.

  1099. in order to

  1100. be faithful,

  1101. in order to

  1102. fulfill the

  1103. desires that

  1104. the Lord gave

  1105. him.

  1106. But he never

  1107. thought it was

  1108. all about him.

  1109. He knew he was

  1110. dependent upon the

  1111. Lord to enable

  1112. him to do

  1113. whatever he did.

  1114. That's that last

  1115. phrase, with all

  1116. the energy Christ

  1117. so powerfully

  1118. works in me.

  1119. I want you to

  1120. understand.

  1121. If you're a

  1122. Christian, it's

  1123. by the grace of

  1124. God.

  1125. God chose to

  1126. save you.

  1127. You heard the

  1128. gospel.

  1129. You repented of

  1130. your sin.

  1131. You trusted

  1132. Jesus.

  1133. God put his

  1134. spirit in you.

  1135. And from that

  1136. moment on, God's

  1137. been working in

  1138. you to cause you

  1139. to desire and be

1140. able to grow as a

  1141. Christian.

  1142. We'll put it that

  1143. way.

  1144. God gives you

  1145. those desires.

  1146. And as people of

  1147. God, it is our

  1148. responsibility to

  1149. act on those

  1150. desires, even if

  1151. it means it's hard,

  1152. we have to

  1153. rearrange some of

  1154. our schedule.

  1155. We just have to

  1156. do it.

  1157. I don't know a

  1158. better way to say

  1159. this.

  1160. We have to

  1161. learn to suck it

  1162. up and do it.

  1163. You know, there's

  1164. tomorrow.

  1165. Everybody in this

  1166. room who's going to

  1167. go to work,

  1168. everybody's not

  1169. going to want to

  1170. jump up in the

  1171. morning and just

  1172. go to work.

  1173. Sometimes we just

  1174. have to make

  1175. ourselves go and

1176. do what we need to

  1177. do to work, to

  1178. support our family.

1179. We have to suck it

  1180. up and go.

  1181. If you ever play

  1182. sports, they're

  1183. going to run you

  1184. and condition you

  1185. and put you through

  1186. more than you ever

  1187. really wanted to do.

1188. But if you want to

  1189. play the sport, you

1190. got to suck it up and

  1191. do it.

  1192. God saves us by

  1193. his grace.

  1194. God puts his

  1195. spirit in us who

  1196. gives us the desire

1197. and will give us the

  1198. ability.

1199. But we got to suck it

  1200. up and do it.

  1201. Serve.

  1202. Suffer if necessary.

  1203. Be inconvenienced if

  1204. necessary.

  1205. In our home, at

  1206. church, out in this

  1207. world.

  1208. Because we're

  1209. supposed to shine

  1210. like light in the

  1211. midst of the

  1212. darkness.

  1213. When it comes to

  1214. living a faithful

  1215. Christian life, we

  1216. are totally dependent

  1217. upon God.

  1218. The desires and the

  1219. ability, it comes

  1220. from him.

  1221. But even God's

  1222. supernatural work

  1223. within us does not

  1224. make our efforts to

  1225. discipline ourselves

  1226. unnecessary.

  1227. If you're a

  1228. Christian, we'll

  1229. wind this down and

  1230. think about some

  1231. serious things here.

  1232. If you're a

  1233. Christian, you are

  1234. about as spiritually

  1235. mature as you want

  1236. to be.

  1237. And so am I.

  1238. You say, that's not

  1239. true.

  1240. Well, it is.

  1241. Think about it.

1242. God has saved you by

  1243. his grace through

  1244. faith in Jesus.

  1245. He has forgiven you.

1246. He has made you his

  1247. child.

  1248. He has put his

  1249. spirit within you to

  1250. give you the desired

  1251. ability to please him.

1252. The way you respond to

1253. what God is doing in

  1254. your life shows how

  1255. serious you are about

  1256. your own personal

  1257. spiritual growth.

  1258. How can you argue

  1259. that?

  1260. It's convicting,

  1261. isn't it?

  1262. It is to me.

  1263. If Jesus is our

  1264. Lord, it will be

  1265. evident in the way

  1266. that we relate to

  1267. God.

  1268. In our ongoing faith

1269. and in the way we

  1270. obey him.

1271. But I will look at

  1272. one thing.

  1273. We're just going to

  1274. look at the title

  1275. here.

  1276. If Jesus is our

  1277. Lord, it will be

  1278. evident by the way

  1279. we relate to people.

  1280. There is no

  1281. relationship with God

  1282. that doesn't

  1283. correspond, work out

  1284. in relationships to

  1285. people.

1286. If Jesus is Lord, it

  1287. will be evident by

  1288. we relate to people.

  1289. First, we will work

  1290. on having healthy

  1291. relationships with our

  1292. brothers and sisters

  1293. in Christ.

  1294. That's what we were

  1295. talking about in

  1296. verses 14 and 15,

  1297. about not grumbling

  1298. and arguing and

  1299. fussing and carrying

  1300. on.

  1301. And then we'll work

  1302. on being positive

  1303. witnesses to

  1304. unbelievers around us.

  1305. We shine.

1306. We stand out in the

1307. midst of a very dark,

  1308. sinful world.

  1309. Now, Paul Tripp

  1310. concluded that

1311. article I had in my

  1312. newsletter with this

  1313. statement.

  1314. Every moment of our

  1315. obedience is an

  1316. evidence of and a

  1317. celebration of the

  1318. grace that not only

  1319. forgives us, but

  1320. rescues.

  1321. And not only rescues,

  1322. but transforms.

  1323. Look at that.

  1324. Every moment of our

  1325. obedience is an

  1326. evidence of and a

  1327. celebration of the

  1328. grace that not only

  1329. forgives us, but

  1330. rescues, and not only

  1331. rescues, but transforms.

  1332. Now think, how many

  1333. moments during the week

1334. do you actually live in

  1335. obedience to God?

1336. How much do you really

1337. live your life, seek to

  1338. live your life in

  1339. obedience to God?

1340. What does that say about

  1341. your desire to please

  1342. God?

  1343. If we don't really

1344. desire and put forth the

  1345. effort to please God,

1346. what does that say about

  1347. us?

  1348. What does your

  1349. obedience say about the

  1350. way that you discipline

1351. yourself to act on the

  1352. desires that God gives

  1353. you to please Him?

  1354. Think about that.

1355. Or would you have to

  1356. admit that you don't

1357. really have a desire to

  1358. please God, bottom line?

  1359. Let's be real honest.

  1360. Would you say this

  1361. morning, I don't really

1362. have a desire to please

  1363. God, and that's why I'll

1364. ever put forth any effort

  1365. to obey God.

1366. If that is your true,

  1367. you know, if that's a true

1368. description of who you are,

  1369. you're not a Christian.

  1370. Because the Holy Spirit

  1371. doesn't live within you.

1372. And Paul tells us in Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1373. chapter 8, if the Spirit of

1374. God's not in us, the Spirit of

1375. Christ is not in us, we're not

  1376. Christians.

1377. But if He's in us, what Paul

1378. is saying here, He works in

1379. us to give us the desire and

1380. the ability to obey God.

1381. So if we never have that

1382. desire and ever put forth the

1383. effort to obey God, how could

  1384. we be Christians?

1385. But I will say this, if you

1386. tell me, I know exactly what

  1387. you're talking about.

  1388. I do believe I'm a Christian.

1389. I have had those desires in a

  1390. day gone by.

1391. I put forth the effort in a

  1392. day gone by.

1393. But the truth is right now, I

1394. am, I'm rebelling against God.

  1395. I've, I've turned away.

  1396. And I don't desire like I used

  1397. to.

1398. And I certainly am not

  1399. obeying.

1400. If you're truly a child of God,

  1401. God will discipline you.

  1402. Because Hebrews, Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

1403. 13 tells us, 12 tells us that

  1404. God disciplines His children

  1405. whom He loves.

1406. So I'm going to encourage you,

  1407. if you're not a Christian, let

  1408. this be a wake-up call.

1409. Don't think about you profess

  1410. faith, you've been baptized, you're

1411. a member of the church, or

  1412. anything like that.

1413. Evaluate where you are in your

1414. relationship with God right now

  1415. like this.

1416. Do I have a desire to please God?

1417. And do I desire to put forth the

1418. effort and actually do to please

  1419. God?

  1420. That's a sign of a Christian.

  1421. If you don't, it's a sign you're

  1422. not a Christian.

  1423. If you're not a Christian, that

  1424. bothers you.

  1425. You want to be.

1426. This is a wake-up call for you.

  1427. Humbly bow before God.

  1428. Repent of your sin.

1429. Trust Jesus as your Lord and

  1430. Savior.

1431. Call upon Him to save you now.

  1432. And if you'd say, I am a

1433. Christian, but I've fallen far,

1434. let this be a wake-up call to

  1435. you.

1436. Come back to the Lord humbly and

  1437. confess your sin.

  1438. Repent.

1439. Draw back close to the Lord and

1440. ask Him to just reawaken you,

1441. your conscience, your heart, so

1442. that you will have those desires

  1443. again.

1444. And as you have those desires

  1445. again, act on them.

1446. Ask God to help you to follow

  1447. through on them.

1448. Because that's how we are to

  1449. live in this world.

1450. If Jesus is really our Lord.

  1451. Let's pray.

1452. Dear God, show us now how we

  1453. should respond.

1454. Show us now, Father, how we can

  1455. leave here this morning

1456. demonstrating that Jesus is the

  1457. Lord of my life.

1458. Let's just, in attitude of

  1459. prayer, listen to God.

1460. And then do what He's telling

  1461. you to do.

1462. Respond as He wants you to this

  1463. morning.

  1464. Thank you.

  1465. Thank you.

  1466. Thank you.

  1467. Thank you.

  1468. Thank you.

  1469. Thank you.

  1470. Thank you.

  1471. See you.
