  1. Do you have a joyful, confident relationship with God?

  2. And I want you to think, your relationship with God,

  3. is there joy in it?

  4. And are you confident that He is your Heavenly Father?

  5. If you don't, I pray that you will

  6. by the time you leave this service today.

  7. That God will show you what needs to take place in your life.

  8. That you'll sense Him calling you, enabling you

  9. to make that kind of commitment.

  10. But if you do, what are you basing your confidence on?

  11. You know, it's one thing to be confident.

  12. I mean, there's times when I'm confident.

  13. I could outrun Jake Alexander back there.

  14. I mean, I think that sometimes.

  15. But that's a stupid thing to think.

  16. So sometimes we can be confident about things that's not true.

  17. That's not real.

  18. There's no basis for it.

  19. And so as we go through this message,

  20. think about, if you say,

  21. I am confident about my relationship with God,

  22. is it a solid confidence?

  23. Is there a reason for it?

  24. A God-given, God-accepting confidence?

  25. I want you to turn with me back to the book of Philippians.

  26. We continue our study.

  27. I was off last week, and Ralph Carter did a great job.

  28. Lisa and I watched the service,

  29. and he just did a great job.

  30. I enjoyed the message, powerful message,

  31. and I appreciate him coming and preaching.

  32. But this morning, I want us to go back to where we were,

  33. beginning a new chapter, chapter 3.

  34. And I want us to see in this some things we need to be clear about.

  35. That we can leave here this morning knowing

  36. that we do have a joyful, confident relationship with God

  37. for the right reason, that he approves.

  38. Philippians 3.1

  39. Finally, brothers, rejoice in the Lord.

  40. Lord, to write the same things to you is no trouble to me

  41. and is safe for you.

  42. Look out for the dogs.

  43. Look out for the evildoers.

  44. Look out for those who mutilate the flesh.

  45. For we are the circumcision,

  46. who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus

  47. and put no confidence in the flesh, in ourselves.

  48. In what we do.

  49. Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also.

  50. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh,

  51. I have more.

  52. Circumcised on the eighth day of the people of Israel,

  53. of the tribe of Benjamin,

  54. a Hebrew of Hebrews,

  55. as to the law of Pharisee,

  56. as to zeal,

  57. a persecutor of the church,

  58. as to righteousness under the law,

  59. blameless.

  60. But whatever gain I had,

  61. I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.

  62. Indeed,

  63. I count everything as loss

  64. because of the surpassing worth

  65. of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

  66. For his sake,

  67. I have suffered the loss of all things

  68. and count them as rubbish

  69. in order that I may gain Christ

  70. and be found in him,

  71. not having a righteousness of my own

  72. that comes from the law,

  73. comes from obeying the law,

  74. but that comes through faith in Christ.

  75. The righteousness from God

  76. that depends on faith.

  77. That I may know him

  78. and the power of his resurrection

  79. and may share his sufferings,

  80. becoming like him in his death,

  81. that by any means possible,

  82. I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

  83. Paul is going to point out some things

  84. to help us to be clear

  85. and confident

  86. about our relationship with the Lord.

  87. Let's look at it.

  88. Let's be clear about where we find Christian joy.

  89. Look at verse one again.

  90. Finally, my brothers,

  91. rejoice in the Lord.

  92. We'll stop there.

  93. The word finally

  94. is used here to make a transition.

  95. Paul is not like someone

  96. who might give a speech or a sermon

  97. and about halfway through

  98. or three quarters through

  99. will say finally.

  100. And you think it's about over,

  101. but it's not.

  102. He is just,

  103. that's just his way

  104. using that word here in this context.

  105. It could be translated then

  106. or furthermore,

  107. because he's got a lot more to say

  108. in this letter.

  109. He begins this section

  110. by calling attention to joy.

  111. We're going to define it

  112. a little bit later,

  113. but it's Christian joy.

  114. And that's one of the main themes

  115. of this letter.

  116. We have seen

  117. in earlier studies

  118. one of the things Paul

  119. repeats over and over again

  120. about there is joy

  121. to be found

  122. in a right relationship

  123. with Jesus.

  124. We as Christians,

  125. of all people in this world,

  126. we have a lot to rejoice about.

  127. He talked about his own joy

  128. and about the Philippians,

  129. the members of this church,

  130. their joy.

  131. Now,

  132. I want to remind you

  133. of something we looked at

  134. when we first began this study.

  135. There is a difference

  136. between Christian joy

  137. and the emotion of happiness.

  138. Happiness is an emotion

  139. that mostly occurs.

  140. We're happy

  141. when things are going our way,

  142. when we have good health,

  143. when people are treating us

  144. in a good way,

  145. a positive way.

  146. Well,

  147. when people don't treat us well

  148. and things are not going our way,

  149. we are not happy,

  150. are we?

  151. And that's just life.

  152. That's just who we are

  153. as human beings.

  154. Sometimes we're happy,

  155. usually based on our circumstances.

  156. Sometimes we're not

  157. because of our circumstances.

  158. Happiness comes and goes

  159. in everyone's life.

  160. Christian joy is different now.

  161. It's really a part of the fruit of the Spirit.

  162. As Christians,

  163. with the Spirit of God living within us,

  164. He works in us to develop our character

  165. and joy is really a character quality.

  166. It's also an attitude.

  167. But Christian joy is not without emotion.

  168. There is pleasure in Christian joy

  169. when you understand that pleasure

  170. basically means to be pleased.

  171. The word pleasure uses the noun

  172. means to be pleased.

  173. So as Christians,

  174. in our relationship with the Lord,

  175. there should be a lot that pleases us.

  176. A similar word to this idea of Christian joy

  177. is contentment

  178. or having peace in your soul

  179. or a sense of peace,

  180. rightness with God.

  181. And this kind of joy

  182. is not really dependent

  183. on our circumstances.

  184. You know, you can

  185. be going through a hard time,

  186. strained relationships with somebody maybe,

  187. sickness,

  188. a lot of uncertainty in your life.

  189. And you know,

  190. you're not just excited about it,

  191. thrilled about it,

  192. you're not happy about it,

  193. but you can,

  194. as you draw close to the Lord,

  195. sort of be at peace with it.

  196. Be content in terms of

  197. you're able to deal with it.

  198. And the idea that

  199. you're going to approach that situation

  200. seeking to please the Lord

  201. regardless of how you actually feel.

  202. That's what we're talking about.

  203. Now Paul explains the source of such joy

  204. in verse three as he says,

  205. rejoice in the Lord.

  206. That's the first time he has said

  207. rejoice in the Lord.

  208. He's talked about joy or rejoice

  209. nine times up to this point.

  210. This is the first time he says

  211. rejoice in the Lord.

  212. Knowing Jesus is our Savior and Lord

  213. gives us reason to rejoice,

  214. to be pleased,

  215. to be content.

  216. Doesn't it?

  217. You know,

  218. most of us in this room,

  219. we have at least one close relationship

  220. with someone

  221. that it just pleases us

  222. to be with them.

  223. Now I hope

  224. that's your spouse

  225. if you're married.

  226. But it could be,

  227. could be your child,

  228. unless they're a teenager.

  229. It could be a friend.

  230. There's just somebody in your life,

  231. hopefully,

  232. and you may have more than one,

  233. that having a relationship with them

  234. just makes you more content,

  235. even in hard times

  236. when, you know,

  237. difficult times goes on.

  238. You know,

  239. I've thought about that.

  240. Brian's my friend.

  241. And I truly,

  242. there's a lot of times

  243. I have joy,

  244. it pleases me

  245. to spend time with him.

  246. But when life's hard,

  247. if I'm sick

  248. or I'm just in turmoil,

  249. I don't really care

  250. if he's around.

  251. I want Lisa there.

  252. I'm serious.

  253. Lisa makes everything better.

  254. Don't you,

  255. I hope you have somebody

  256. in your life

  257. that just having them there

  258. makes everything better.

  259. Well, that's how the Lord

  260. should be if we're Christians.

  261. We should have such a relationship

  262. with him,

  263. we're able to talk to him,

  264. we sense his presence,

  265. and just knowing

  266. that he's promised

  267. to never leave us

  268. nor forsake us,

  269. no matter what,

  270. knowing him

  271. gives us a sense of joy.

  272. It pleases us.

  273. It makes things right.

  274. Now,

  275. having a relationship

  276. with the Lord

  277. does have other benefits.

  278. Your sins have been forgiven.

  279. The guilt should be gone.

  280. No Christian should live in guilt.

  281. You are an actual child of God.

  282. The Lord has promised

  283. to always be with you

  284. throughout your life

  285. here on earth,

  286. and when you die,

  287. he's going to take you

  288. into heaven.

  289. He's going to walk

  290. with you

  291. into paradise.

  292. And so,

  293. there's a lot of reasons

  294. why we should be able

  295. to rejoice

  296. in the Lord.

  297. Now,

  298. I want you to note,

  299. Paul says,

  300. to write the same things

  301. to you

  302. is no trouble to me

  303. and is safe for you.

  304. I'm taking that

  305. to mean

  306. that Paul has

  307. talked to these people

  308. a lot about joy.

  309. When he was with them

  310. earlier in this letter,

  311. he could have even

  312. written another letter

  313. we have no,

  314. you know,

  315. we don't know about

  316. that he talked about joy.

  317. He talked about joy

  318. a lot with them

  319. and it never got old

  320. to him.

  321. And he doesn't want it

  322. to get old

  323. to them

  324. either.

  325. He talks about

  326. at the end there.

  327. It is no trouble

  328. to me

  329. and it is safe

  330. for you.

  331. Rejoicing in the Lord,

  332. focusing on him

  333. like we're talking about,

  334. is good for our

  335. spiritual health,

  336. our spiritual well-being,

  337. our spiritual safety

  338. even.

  339. You say,

  340. how will that be?

  341. Well,

  342. it would help us

  343. to stay off

  344. the emotional

  345. roller coaster

  346. that occurs

  347. when we allow

  348. our circumstances

  349. to dictate

  350. our mood,

  351. our emotions.

  352. And some people

  353. do that more

  354. than others.

  355. I mean,

  356. some people in here,

  357. you know,

  358. you're sort of like

  359. a flag in the wind.

  360. Whatever the situation is,

  361. it gets you down,

  362. it gets you up.

  363. You're just dependent

  364. on what is happening

  365. around you

  366. to determine

  367. your mood,

  368. your emotional

  369. status or stability.

  370. And that's not healthy.

  371. We need to rejoice

  372. in the Lord,

  373. focus on him,

  374. find peace,

  375. rest,

  376. contentment in him,

  377. and that will help us,

  378. protect us,

  379. our sanity,

  380. our emotional stability,

  381. as well as our

  382. spiritual stability.

  383. Now,

  384. what could you do

  385. that would help you

  386. to rejoice more

  387. in the Lord,

  388. to focus more

  389. on him

  390. on a daily basis?

  391. You know,

  392. one thing would be

  393. to begin each day

  394. talking to him.

  395. Spend some time

  396. in prayer.

  397. Spend some time

  398. reading God's word.

  399. Focusing on the Lord

  400. as you begin the day

  401. or at some point

  402. during the day.

  403. A lot of people

  404. in this room,

  405. you spend a lot of time

  406. on the road,

  407. mornings and afternoons

  408. going to work,

  409. going to school.

  410. What do you do

  411. during that time?

  412. Could you

  413. maybe turn off

  414. the radio,

  415. iPod,

  416. or whatever it is

  417. you listen to?

  418. Could you maybe

  419. have some quiet time

  420. as you drive

  421. and just talk

  422. to the Lord?

  423. Focus on him?

  424. Could you

  425. maybe listen

  426. to some Christian music

  427. or some Christian teaching

  428. that would help you

  429. to focus more on him?

  430. or even to grow

  431. in your relationship

  432. with him,

  433. in your knowledge

  434. of God's word?

  435. Find ways

  436. that you will be able

  437. to focus more

  438. on the Lord

  439. throughout a day

  440. because that's

  441. what it's going to take

  442. for us to really be able

  443. to rejoice in the Lord

  444. and find safety

  445. or stability

  446. just on a regular basis.

  447. Now the next verse

  448. helps us see

  449. that rejoicing

  450. in the Lord

  451. doesn't make us

  452. immune from the

  453. harsh realities

  454. of life

  455. nor the negative

  456. emotions

  457. of being human.

  458. Look at number two.

  459. Let's be clear

  460. about who we can

  461. trust to teach

  462. the Bible.

  463. Paul warns

  464. the Philippians,

  465. this church,

  466. about false teachers

  467. in a very strong way.

  468. Look at this verse two.

  469. Look out for the dogs.

  470. Look out for the evildoers.

  471. Look out for those

  472. who mutilate the flesh.

  473. You think Paul was smiling

  474. when he wrote those words?

  475. You think he was

  476. in a happy mood?

  477. He was angry.

  478. I think he was red-faced.

  479. I think you could hear

  480. it in his voice.

  481. He was angry

  482. as he thought about

  483. these people,

  484. these false teachers.

  485. Here's who they were.

  486. If you're familiar

  487. with the book of Acts

  488. or you've read

  489. some of Paul's letters,

  490. you know that

  491. Paul's sort of

  492. plan of action.

  493. He went to a place,

  494. he preached the gospel,

  495. people were saved,

  496. he started a church,

  497. he did his best

  498. to get them off

  499. on the right foot,

  500. doctrinally,

  501. practically,

  502. trying to help them

  503. to understand

  504. who they were in Christ

  505. and how to grow.

  506. But after Paul left,

  507. in many of his churches,

  508. there was a group

  509. that came in.

  510. They were Jews

  511. who also claimed

  512. to be Christians.

  513. Bible commentators

  514. refer to them

  515. as Judaizers.

  516. They were trying

  517. to make Jews

  518. out of Christians.

  519. And they would come in

  520. and say,

  521. yeah,

  522. what Paul preached

  523. was okay,

  524. it is important

  525. to trust in Jesus,

  526. but that's not

  527. the whole story.

  528. Their goal

  529. was to make Jews

  530. out of those Christians.

  531. They would say,

  532. Paul didn't tell you

  533. the whole story,

  534. the full gospel.

  535. What they would say

  536. is you've got to obey

  537. the Old Testament law.

  538. You've got to keep the law.

  539. You've got to practice

  540. the Old Testament circumcision.

  541. That's important

  542. for you to do.

  543. And as a faithful Jew

  544. obeying the law

  545. and trusting Christ,

  546. you will be okay.

  547. So they were Jews,

  548. false teachers,

  549. telling the Gentiles

  550. they've got to become a Jew.

  551. And that just

  552. incensed Paul

  553. because it was a lie.

  554. They were undermining

  555. the truth

  556. that he had been teaching them.

  557. And Paul made it clear

  558. in his letter

  559. to the Galatians

  560. that these Judaizers

  561. were preaching

  562. a different gospel

  563. than he preached,

  564. not completing his,

  565. a different gospel,

  566. which meant

  567. it was no gospel

  568. at all.

  569. Look at what he says.

  570. Galatians chapter 1

    Galatians 1:6–8

  571. verses 6 to 8.

  572. In Philippians,

  573. his anger

  574. is toward

  575. the false teachers,

  576. not these people.

  577. In Galatians,

  578. he's angry

  579. about everybody.

  580. The false teachers

  581. who are coming in

  582. behind him

  583. and undermining him

  584. and these very church members

  585. who are embracing that,

  586. believing that,

  587. being led astray.

  588. Look at it.

  589. I am astonished

  590. that you are so quickly

  591. deserting him

  592. who called you

  593. in the grace of Christ

  594. and are turning

  595. to a different gospel,

  596. not that there is

  597. another one,

  598. but there are some

  599. who trouble you

  600. and want to distort

  601. the gospel of Christ.

  602. But even if we

  603. or an angel

  604. from heaven

  605. should preach to you

  606. a gospel contrary

  607. to the one

  608. we preach to you,

  609. let him be accursed.

  610. Let him be

  611. eternally condemned.

  612. That's how strongly

  613. he felt about

  614. the purity of the gospel,

  615. preserving it

  616. and going after those

  617. who would try to dilute it

  618. or undermine it

  619. or change it.

  620. Look at how Paul

  621. describes them.

  622. Let's look back

  623. in the verse.

  624. Dogs.

  625. Now don't think about

  626. your pet at home.

  627. That is not

  628. the kind of dog

  629. Paul had in mind.

  630. That is our dog,

  631. Molly.

  632. She's a good dog.

  633. Let me say this.

  634. I do not believe

  635. in reincarnation.

  636. That is heresy.

  637. That is moronic.

  638. But if reincarnation

  639. is real,

  640. you want to come back

  641. as Lisa Stone's dog.

  642. You'll have the best dog

  643. life that a dog

  644. could have.

  645. That's a fine dog.

  646. But that's not

  647. who Paul is calling

  648. these false teachers.

  649. Look next.

  650. That

  651. vicious,

  652. wild,

  653. scavenger

  654. kind of dog

  655. that roamed

  656. the streets

  657. of the day,

  658. nobody's pet.

  659. when Paul

  660. called these people

  661. dogs,

  662. it was a hateful

  663. term

  664. of scorn.

  665. It was about

  666. as strong

  667. an insult

  668. as he could say.

  669. Jews

  670. in Paul's day

  671. condescendingly

  672. often called

  673. Gentiles

  674. dogs.

  675. dogs.

  676. And a lot of times

  677. Gentiles

  678. returned to favor.

  679. Then Paul

  680. next calls them

  681. evildoers.

  682. He considered

  683. what they were doing,

  684. undermining the gospel,

  685. leading people astray

  686. as doing

  687. evil.

  688. And then those

  689. who mutilate

  690. the flesh,

  691. that's what Paul

  692. thought of

  693. circumcision

  694. if it's added

  695. to the gospel.

  696. It's nothing

  697. spiritual.

  698. These

  699. false teachers

  700. taught a salvation

  701. by works

  702. is what they were

  703. doing.

  704. It was a man

  705. made religion,

  706. a man made

  707. salvation.

  708. But Paul

  709. tells us here,

  710. salvation is work

  711. of the Spirit

  712. of God.

  713. Salvation is work

  714. of the Holy Spirit

  715. who indwells

  716. us as Christians.

  717. The gospel

  718. calls everyone

  719. look to Jesus

  720. Christ

  721. for your

  722. salvation.

  723. There's nothing

  724. you can add

  725. to it.

  726. Don't even

  727. try.

  728. Look at this,

  729. verse 3.

  730. For we are the

  731. circumcision.

  732. He's talking about

  733. spiritually here.

  734. He's talking about

  735. how in Romans

  736. it says it this way,

  737. the Holy Spirit

  738. circumcises our

  739. heart.

  740. He's just talking

  741. about how God

  742. does the work

  743. of salvation

  744. in these kind

  745. of terms.

  746. For we're the

  747. circumcision

  748. who worship

  749. by the Spirit

  750. of God

  751. and glory

  752. in Christ

  753. Jesus

  754. and put no

  755. confidence

  756. in the flesh.

  757. our good

  758. works,

  759. our keeping

  760. the law

  761. and all

  762. these kinds

  763. of things.

  764. Paul wants

  765. to make sure

  766. that the

  767. Philippians

  768. understand

  769. I know

  770. what I'm

  771. talking about.

  772. Paul wants

  773. them to

  774. understand

  775. that if

  776. anyone could

  777. be right

  778. with God

  779. by doing

  780. what these

  781. false teachers

  782. say,

  783. I could

  784. and I

  785. would.

  786. Look at how

  787. he describes

  788. his heritage

  789. and his

  790. good works.

  791. He says,

  792. though I

  793. myself have

  794. reason for

  795. confidence in

  796. the flesh

  797. also,

  798. if anyone

  799. else thinks

  800. he has

  801. reason for

  802. confidence in

  803. the flesh,

  804. I have

  805. more.

  806. It's like

  807. one of the

  808. greatest Jewish

  809. resumes

  810. that a Jewish

  811. leader could

  812. have.

  813. Look at

  814. this.

  815. Circumcised

  816. on the

  817. eighth day,

  818. of the

  819. people of

  820. Israel,

  821. of the

  822. tribe of

  823. Benjamin,

  824. a Hebrew

  825. of Hebrews,

  826. as to the

  827. law,

  828. a Pharisee,

  829. as to zeal,

  830. a persecutor

  831. of the church,

  832. as to righteousness

  833. under the law,

  834. blameless.

  835. Paul was a

  836. Jew's Jew

  837. from birth.

  838. And as he

  839. grew up,

  840. as he went

  841. through his

  842. adult life

  843. until he came

  844. to Christ,

  845. he never

  846. wavered.

  847. Now,

  848. I want us

  849. to pause

  850. here and

  851. think about

  852. what Paul

  853. is saying

  854. because the

  855. idea here,

  856. the concept

  857. here is a

  858. matter of

  859. life and

  860. death.

  861. It's a

  862. matter of

  863. spending

  864. eternity

  865. in heaven

  866. or hell.

  867. In

  868. Paul's

  869. day,

  870. many Jews

  871. thought they

  872. could score

  873. points with

  874. God because

  875. they were

  876. born a Jew.

  877. They tried

  878. to keep the

  879. Ten Commandments

  880. and that's

  881. what the

  882. false teachers

  883. were teaching.

  884. today,

  885. in this

  886. community,

  887. maybe in

  888. this church,

  889. some people

  890. think along

  891. that same

  892. line,

  893. what about

  894. you?

  895. Think with

  896. me.

  897. Were you

  898. born into a

  899. Christian home?

  900. Did you have

  901. godly parents?

  902. Have you been

  903. to church

  904. basically all

  905. your life?

  906. Well,

  907. those things

  908. are great in

  909. that they gave

  910. you the

  911. advantage of

  912. having Christian

  913. role models right

  914. there in your

  915. home.

  916. You had the

  917. advantage of

  918. being taught the

  919. Word of God

  920. and you still

  921. know a lot

  922. that you learned

  923. even at a very

  924. young age.

  925. But I want

  926. you to

  927. understand,

  928. your parents'

  929. faith and

  930. your Bible

  931. knowledge and

  932. your church

  933. attendance has

  934. absolutely nothing

  935. to do with your

  936. personal salvation.

  937. In fact,

  938. our exposure to

  939. Christian role

  940. models like in

  941. our homes,

  942. our exposure

  943. to biblical

  944. teaching,

  945. God expects

  946. us more

  947. accountable.

  948. God expects

  949. more of you

  950. and me if we

  951. grew up in a

  952. Christian home

  953. and been taught

  954. the Word of

  955. God more than

  956. someone who

  957. was a pagan,

  958. an ungodly

  959. home and never

  960. even heard

  961. anything that

  962. was in the

  963. Bible.

  964. You say,

  965. I don't know

  966. about that.

  967. Look at what

  968. Jesus said in

  969. one of his

  970. parables.

  971. Everyone to

  972. whom much

  973. was given

  974. of him,

  975. much will be

  976. required.

  977. That's the

  978. principle of

  979. life.

  980. Even as a

  981. Christian right

  982. now,

  983. if God has

  984. given you

  985. spiritual gifts

  986. and talents

  987. and abilities,

  988. I mean,

  989. you're sharp.

  990. By the grace of

  991. God, you are a

  992. sharp Christian,

  993. talented,

  994. a lot of

  995. abilities.

  996. God expects you

  997. to be using them

  998. for his glory and

  999. the good of the

  1000. people around you,

  1001. including this

  1002. church.

  1003. We are

  1004. accountable for

  1005. what God

  1006. brings into

  1007. our life,

  1008. what God

  1009. gives us.

  1010. Think about

  1011. this.

  1012. Have you

  1013. behaved yourself

  1014. pretty good

  1015. most of your

  1016. life?

  1017. I mean,

  1018. there's a lot

  1019. of people in

  1020. this room,

  1021. not Mike

  1022. Sterling-Kinney,

  1023. but there's a

  1024. lot of people

  1025. in this room

  1026. who've been

  1027. good people

  1028. most of

  1029. their lives.

  1030. You

  1031. listened to

  1032. your parents.

  1033. You weren't

  1034. defiant,

  1035. rebellious.

  1036. You have

  1037. tried to

  1038. obey the

  1039. laws of

  1040. God and

  1041. man.

  1042. In fact,

  1043. there may

  1044. be a lot

  1045. of people

  1046. in this

  1047. room that

  1048. you've

  1049. sort of

  1050. lived a

  1051. Andy Taylor

  1052. of Mayberry

  1053. kind of

  1054. life.

  1055. You've

  1056. just been

  1057. good.

  1058. But I

  1059. want you

  1060. to understand,

  1061. your good

  1062. works may

  1063. and probably

  1064. have made

  1065. your life

  1066. in this

  1067. world better.

  1068. But God

  1069. is not

  1070. impressed.

  1071. And you

  1072. have not

  1073. earned

  1074. anything

  1075. before God

  1076. by your

  1077. good life

  1078. and good

  1079. works.

  1080. Unless you

  1081. have lived

  1082. an absolutely

  1083. perfect life

  1084. and never

  1085. sinned,

  1086. you,

  1087. no matter

  1088. where you

  1089. came from

  1090. or what

  1091. you've done,

  1092. you are

  1093. not

  1094. acceptable

  1095. to God

  1096. on your

  1097. own.

  1098. You're

  1099. not.

  1100. You may

  1101. be a whole

  1102. lot better

  1103. than the

  1104. person sitting

  1105. beside you

  1106. in the pew.

  1107. You may

  1108. be a lot

  1109. better than

  1110. a lot of

  1111. people that

  1112. you know.

  1113. That's part

  1114. of our

  1115. problem.

  1116. We like

  1117. to compare

  1118. ourselves.

  1119. You know?

  1120. I would

  1121. never compare

  1122. myself with

  1123. Rudy Gray

  1124. sitting over

  1125. there.

  1126. You know,

  1127. I just

  1128. couldn't,

  1129. I couldn't

  1130. measure up.

  1131. But I

  1132. can compare

  1133. myself to

  1134. Mike Sterling

  1135. Kenny,

  1136. okay.

  1137. So you

  1138. shouldn't

  1139. sit on the

  1140. front row

  1141. with a

  1142. suit on.

  1143. That just

  1144. gets my

  1145. attention.

  1146. You see

  1147. what I'm

  1148. talking about?

  1149. You think

  1150. to yourself,

  1151. I am a

  1152. pretty good

  1153. guy and

  1154. maybe you

  1155. are in

  1156. this

  1157. community,

  1158. comparatively

  1159. speaking.

  1160. But before

  1161. God and

  1162. his perfect,

  1163. righteous,

  1164. holy standards,

  1165. you are a

  1166. sinner.

  1167. You can

  1168. do nothing

  1169. to change

  1170. that.

  1171. You can

  1172. do nothing

  1173. to overcome

  1174. that on

  1175. your own.

  1176. We need

  1177. to understand

  1178. this as

  1179. Paul points

  1180. out next.

  1181. Look at this

  1182. quickly.

  1183. Let's be

  1184. clear about

  1185. what ultimately

  1186. matters.

  1187. Verses 7

  1188. and 8.

  1189. But whatever

  1190. gain I had,

  1191. I counted as

  1192. loss for the

  1193. sake of

  1194. Christ.

  1195. Indeed,

  1196. I count

  1197. everything as

  1198. loss because

  1199. of the

  1200. surpassing

  1201. worth of

  1202. knowing Christ

  1203. Jesus my

  1204. Lord.

  1205. For his

  1206. sake I

  1207. have

  1208. suffered

  1209. the loss

  1210. of all

  1211. things and

  1212. count them

  1213. as rubbish

  1214. in order that

  1215. I may gain

  1216. Christ.

  1217. I want you

  1218. to look at

  1219. what Paul

  1220. called his

  1221. previous

  1222. religious

  1223. resume,

  1224. his assets,

  1225. rubbish.

  1226. R.C.

  1227. Sproul explains

  1228. what he meant

  1229. by that.

  1230. Look,

  1231. some scholars

  1232. contend the

  1233. Greek word

  1234. for rubbish

  1235. is actually

  1236. the ordinary

  1237. slang term

  1238. for dung

  1239. or may

  1240. refer to

  1241. garbage

  1242. thrown out

  1243. to dogs.

  1244. This stuff

  1245. had value

  1246. before Christ

  1247. but now

  1248. it is to

  1249. be flushed

  1250. away.

  1251. Christ is

  1252. now the

  1253. only thing

  1254. that counts

  1255. and Paul

  1256. put everything

  1257. else away.

  1258. Everything

  1259. that Paul

  1260. the Jew,

  1261. everything

  1262. that Paul

  1263. the good

  1264. guy in his

  1265. day thought

  1266. was important,

  1267. his heritage,

  1268. his good

  1269. works,

  1270. was really

  1271. worth

  1272. nothing,

  1273. I mean

  1274. absolutely

  1275. nothing

  1276. in terms

  1277. of securing

  1278. God's

  1279. favor.

  1280. Do you

  1281. really

  1282. understand

  1283. that?

  1284. Everything

  1285. that you

  1286. think makes

  1287. you special

  1288. or that

  1289. gives you

  1290. some kind

  1291. of special

  1292. standing

  1293. before God

  1294. like your

  1295. family,

  1296. your church

  1297. attendance,

  1298. maybe your

  1299. talents,

  1300. your gifts,

  1301. your education.

  1302. It's

  1303. worthless,

  1304. absolutely

  1305. meaningless

  1306. in terms

  1307. of gaining

  1308. God's

  1309. favor.

  1310. And anyone

  1311. who tells

  1312. you otherwise

  1313. is a false

  1314. teacher.

  1315. Anyone who

  1316. tells you

  1317. otherwise,

  1318. they're a

  1319. dog,

  1320. a scavenger

  1321. dog.

  1322. They are

  1323. evil doers.

  1324. Don't

  1325. listen to

  1326. anyone who

  1327. denies or

  1328. ignores the

  1329. fact that

  1330. you are a

  1331. sinner,

  1332. totally

  1333. dependent upon

  1334. God's

  1335. grace and

  1336. Jesus'

  1337. righteousness

  1338. for your

  1339. salvation.

  1340. I want you

  1341. to hang

  1342. on to your

  1343. hats on

  1344. this.

  1345. Whoever

  1346. tells you

  1347. otherwise

  1348. is a

  1349. false

  1350. teacher,

  1351. even if

  1352. that's your

  1353. parents

  1354. or your

  1355. grandparents

  1356. or Joel

  1357. Osteen

  1358. or anyone

  1359. else who

  1360. denies

  1361. the clear

  1362. teaching of

  1363. the Bible

  1364. that we're all

  1365. sinners,

  1366. we cannot save

  1367. ourselves,

  1368. we cannot earn

  1369. our salvation.

  1370. But don't

  1371. think I'm

  1372. being overly

  1373. harsh or

  1374. hard.

  1375. I'm just

  1376. preaching

  1377. what Paul

  1378. in Galatians

  1379. said.

  1380. Look again,

  1381. but even if

  1382. we or an

  1383. angel from

  1384. heaven should

  1385. preach to

  1386. you a

  1387. gospel contrary

  1388. to the

  1389. ones we

  1390. preach to

  1391. you,

  1392. let him be

  1393. accursed.

  1394. That's how

  1395. strong it is.

  1396. That's how

  1397. important it

  1398. is that you

  1399. not be

  1400. misled by

  1401. any human

  1402. being in

  1403. this world

  1404. when it

  1405. comes to

  1406. how you

  1407. are right

  1408. with God.

  1409. Last thing,

  1410. let's be

  1411. clear about

  1412. how we

  1413. become right

  1414. with God.

  1415. Let's look

  1416. at verses

  1417. 9 and

  1418. 10.

  1419. And be

  1420. found in

  1421. him,

  1422. not having

  1423. a righteousness

  1424. of my own

  1425. that comes

  1426. from the

  1427. law,

  1428. but that

  1429. which comes

  1430. through faith

  1431. in Christ,

  1432. the righteousness

  1433. from God

  1434. that depends

  1435. on faith.

  1436. Let's stop

  1437. there.

  1438. Paul describes

  1439. salvation as

  1440. having a

  1441. righteousness

  1442. that comes

  1443. through faith

  1444. in Jesus

  1445. Christ.

  1446. Now what

  1447. does he

  1448. mean?

  1449. Well the

  1450. word

  1451. righteousness

  1452. simply means

  1453. to be declared

  1454. right with

  1455. God.

  1456. Don't stumble

  1457. over it,

  1458. sort of a,

  1459. look at that

  1460. word,

  1461. what does that

  1462. exactly mean?

  1463. It means to

  1464. be right with

  1465. God,

  1466. or to be

  1467. declared right

  1468. with God

  1469. by God.

  1470. God declares

  1471. us to be

  1472. right with

  1473. him,

  1474. when we

  1475. put our

  1476. faith in

  1477. Jesus as

  1478. our Savior

  1479. and Lord.

  1480. We will

  1481. never be

  1482. right with

  1483. God by

  1484. obeying

  1485. God's

  1486. law,

  1487. by doing

  1488. our best,

  1489. by trying

  1490. harder.

  1491. The good

  1492. news of

  1493. this passage

  1494. is that God

  1495. sent his

  1496. son into

  1497. this world

  1498. to be

  1499. our Savior.

  1500. Jesus

  1501. perfectly

  1502. obeyed

  1503. God's

  1504. law.

  1505. And when

  1506. we put

  1507. our faith

  1508. in Jesus

  1509. and trust

  1510. him,

  1511. we become

  1512. one with

  1513. him,

  1514. then his

  1515. obedience is

  1516. credited to

  1517. us.

  1518. Jesus took

  1519. the punishment

  1520. that we

  1521. deserve because

  1522. we've broken

  1523. God's laws

  1524. when he died

  1525. on the

  1526. cross.

  1527. And so

  1528. when you

  1529. trust Jesus,

  1530. you become

  1531. one with

  1532. him,

  1533. and his

  1534. death on

  1535. the cross

  1536. counts as

  1537. your death

  1538. to sin.

  1539. If you

  1540. don't have a

  1541. relationship

  1542. with God

  1543. through faith

  1544. in Jesus

  1545. right now,

  1546. I want

  1547. to encourage

  1548. you to

  1549. turn to

  1550. Christ in

  1551. faith.

  1552. It may

  1553. be that

  1554. you came

  1555. into this

  1556. room this

  1557. morning,

  1558. never thought

  1559. about it

  1560. like this

  1561. before,

  1562. but you

  1563. are really

  1564. trying to

  1565. work your

  1566. way to

  1567. heaven.

  1568. You're

  1569. trying to

  1570. balance the

  1571. scales of

  1572. being good

  1573. here and

  1574. doing a

  1575. little bit

  1576. more when

  1577. you're bad

  1578. there.

  1579. You're really

  1580. thinking God's

  1581. going to accept

  1582. me based on

  1583. what I do,

  1584. the good I

  1585. can do.

  1586. But that's

  1587. totally wrong.

  1588. The only way

  1589. God's going to

  1590. accept you

  1591. is to admit

  1592. you are a

  1593. sinner, you

  1594. cannot save

  1595. yourself, repent,

  1596. change your mind

  1597. about living this

  1598. way, put your

  1599. trust in Jesus

  1600. and Him alone.

  1601. Call upon Him

  1602. to save you.

  1603. Surrender

  1604. control of your

  1605. life to Him

  1606. as your

  1607. Lord.

  1608. I want to

  1609. ask you,

  1610. if you died

  1611. today,

  1612. this day,

  1613. and you

  1614. stood before

  1615. God and He

  1616. asked you,

  1617. why should I

  1618. let you into

  1619. heaven?

  1620. What would

  1621. you say?

  1622. Think about it

  1623. for just a

  1624. moment.

  1625. You died

  1626. today.

  1627. And all of a

  1628. sudden, you

  1629. stand before

  1630. God.

  1631. He looks at

  1632. you and says,

  1633. why should I

  1634. let you into

  1635. heaven?

  1636. What would

  1637. you say?

  1638. Would your

  1639. answer include

  1640. anything about

  1641. who you are,

  1642. who your

  1643. family is,

  1644. or what you

  1645. have done

  1646. to earn

  1647. your place

  1648. in heaven?

  1649. If you're

  1650. going to

  1651. answer like

  1652. that,

  1653. you're trying

  1654. to save

  1655. yourself.

  1656. And you'll

  1657. never get in.

  1658. The only

  1659. acceptable

  1660. answer

  1661. is that I

  1662. am trusting

  1663. in Jesus

  1664. and Him

  1665. alone

  1666. for my

  1667. salvation.

  1668. when we

  1669. come to

  1670. God,

  1671. be very

  1672. clear about

  1673. this.

  1674. When we

  1675. come to

  1676. God, it

  1677. doesn't matter

  1678. who we

  1679. are,

  1680. where we're

  1681. from,

  1682. or what

  1683. we've done.

  1684. All that

  1685. matters is

  1686. that we

  1687. come to

  1688. Him by

  1689. trusting

  1690. Jesus.

  1691. And that

  1692. is the only

  1693. way that He

  1694. will ever

  1695. accept anyone

  1696. when we're

  1697. united to

  1698. Jesus by

  1699. faith.

  1700. Let's pray

  1701. together.

  1702. Father,

  1703. show us

  1704. now if

  1705. we have

  1706. reason to

  1707. have

  1708. confidence

  1709. in our

  1710. relationship

  1711. with You.

  1712. But Lord,

  1713. make it

  1714. crystal clear

  1715. that anyone

  1716. here who is

  1717. trusting in

  1718. themselves and

  1719. who they

  1720. are, what

  1721. they are,

  1722. what they've

  1723. done, they

  1724. fall short.

  1725. They can't

  1726. save

  1727. themselves.

  1728. But Lord,

  1729. help us all

  1730. to see, to

  1731. be reminded,

  1732. to be

  1733. encouraged,

  1734. that if we'll

  1735. just admit our

  1736. sin, our

  1737. failure,

  1738. and hate it

  1739. and turn from

  1740. it, and

  1741. trust Jesus

  1742. and rest in

  1743. Jesus.

  1744. We will be

  1745. forgiven because

  1746. He died for

  1747. our sins.

  1748. We will be

  1749. righteous because

  1750. we have His

  1751. right standing.

  1752. So help us,

  1753. dear God,

  1754. to make the

  1755. kind of

  1756. commitment or

  1757. to just simply

  1758. say thank

  1759. you so that

  1760. we can all

  1761. leave here this

  1762. morning with

  1763. joyful confidence

  1764. that we have

  1765. a right and

  1766. good relationship

  1767. with you.

  1768. Let's just

  1769. pray and

  1770. listen to the

  1771. Lord and

  1772. respond to

  1773. Him as

  1774. He wants us

  1775. to during

  1776. this time.

  1777. Thank you.
