  1. of any area of life where a person arrives at perfection

  2. and no longer needs to continue to move forward,

  3. grow, improve.

  4. I can't.

  5. You think about an athlete, a successful athlete.

  6. He or she knows that last week's winning performance

  7. will not guarantee a win next game.

  8. And so good athletes, no matter how well they function yesterday,

  9. they're going to continue to work, to practice, to get better.

  10. They know what's required if they want to continue to be successful.

  11. Now I know we've got some scholars in this room,

  12. some of you in college, 4.0.

  13. I always had a 4.0 when you added two semesters together.

  14. Some of you, middle school, high school, elementary school,

  15. you make all A's.

  16. I know some of you do.

  17. Well, if you made all A's or that 4.0 last semester,

  18. that does not just automatically transfer to this semester, does it?

  19. If you're a good student, if you're a smart student,

  20. you know you've got to study now.

  21. You've got to work now to maintain, to keep on making those kinds of grades.

  22. Now every Christian, let me rephrase that,

  23. every mature Christian knows that no matter how much we grow,

  24. no matter how close we are to the Lord,

  25. no matter how effective we are in serving Him,

  26. we've got to continue on.

  27. We can't rest on yesterday's faithfulness.

  28. We've got to grow spiritually.

  29. It's a lifelong process.

  30. And mature Christians know that.

  31. How do I know?

  32. Because the Apostle Paul,

  33. one of the most mature Christians we will ever read or know about,

  34. he emphasizes in Philippians chapter 3

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  35. what a lot of the great saints that you have read about have said.

  36. The closer you are to the Lord,

  37. the more conscious you are of your own sinfulness.

  38. The more conscious you are that you've got a long way to go

  39. to be like Jesus.

  40. Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3:12–16

  41. verses 12 through 16 is where we're going to look today.

  42. Paul is describing how he knows he's not where he needs to be.

  43. And he is going to put forth every ounce of effort

  44. that God graciously allows him to put forth

  45. to know Christ better,

  46. to be closer to Him,

  47. and to serve Him,

  48. make a difference in other people's lives.

  49. Read with me.

  50. Philippians 3,

  51. beginning in verse 12.

  52. Not that I have already obtained this,

  53. or am already perfect,

  54. but I press on to make it my own,

  55. because Christ Jesus has made me His own.

  56. Brothers,

  57. I do not consider that I have made it my own,

  58. but one thing I do,

  59. forgetting what lies behind

  60. and straining forward to what lies ahead.

  61. I press on toward the goal for the prize

  62. of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  63. Let those of us who are mature think this way.

  64. And if in anything you think otherwise,

  65. God will reveal that to you also.

  66. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

  67. We are moving through the book of Philippians.

  68. We're coming to a part where Paul's sort of bearing his soul to us.

  69. He's admitting he comes short of where he wants to be and needs to be.

  70. So as we look at this,

  71. let's look at it with the idea that

  72. through Paul's example,

  73. we're going to evaluate

  74. our own need to grow spiritually.

  75. And then we're going to come back next week in particular

  76. and see how we can actually accomplish

  77. a greater, more intimate,

  78. more meaningful relationship with the Lord

  79. and service to Him.

  80. Let's look first now, verse 12.

  81. The way to know if you need to grow spiritually.

  82. The way you need to grow spiritually.

  83. The way to know.

  84. We're going to look from Paul's experience.

  85. If you need to grow spiritually.

  86. Paul knew that he had not arrived.

  87. That he needed to continue to grow

  88. because of what was lacking in his life.

  89. I want you to note two things.

  90. First, Paul had not obtained his spiritual goals.

  91. He says in the first part of verse 12,

  92. not that I have already obtained this.

  93. This is what he's been talking about

  94. in verses 10 and 11 in particular.

  95. We read that last week.

  96. What I want us to do right now for sake of time

  97. is just look at two of the things

  98. that he talked about in verse 10

  99. that he has not obtained.

  100. Look at it in verse 10.

  101. That I may know him

  102. and the power of his resurrection.

  103. Paul had not obtained the goal

  104. of knowing Christ

  105. like he wanted to.

  106. Now I want you to think about

  107. what that man said.

  108. Paul has walked with the Lord

  109. probably for 30 years now.

  110. I mean, God has used him

  111. in a tremendous way.

  112. But what he's telling us here is

  113. his relationship with the Lord

  114. wasn't as close, as deep

  115. as he wanted

  116. and as he knew the Lord wanted it to be.

  117. He wanted more.

  118. The other goal that Paul had not obtained

  119. was to experience the power of God in his life,

  120. the kind of power that God had demonstrated

  121. when he raised Jesus from the dead.

  122. That's life-changing power, isn't it?

  123. Transforming power.

  124. So what Paul is doing here,

  125. he is describing two of his greatest desires

  126. that he has not obtained.

  127. He wants to know Christ and be like him.

  128. He wants to know him better.

  129. Be more like him.

  130. And Paul wants to experience

  131. God's transforming power in his own life.

  132. Paul's not perfect.

  133. He struggles just like you and me.

  134. He's a sinner.

  135. I don't know this.

  136. This is a guess.

  137. But just reading some of the things he said,

  138. the way he broke in last week

  139. and said, beware the dogs.

  140. Paul may have had to battle anger some.

  141. Don't you think?

  142. And what he's wanting to experience in his life

  143. is more of God's transforming power,

  144. the kind of power it raised Jesus from the dead

  145. to help him to overcome his sins,

  146. his failures,

  147. to become more like Jesus,

  148. but also to be more effective

  149. in other people's lives

  150. through his teaching and preaching interaction.

  151. You know,

  152. Paul was a star in that day

  153. in terms of the way the Lord used him.

  154. I mean, he was the greatest theologian,

  155. the evangelist,

  156. the missionary,

  157. the church planter.

  158. He went into these places

  159. where nobody ever heard the gospel,

  160. a lot of them,

  161. preached,

  162. people believed,

  163. they started a church.

  164. He got them started.

  165. But it didn't take long

  166. in a lot of these churches

  167. that problems happened.

  168. You know,

  169. everywhere there's people,

  170. there's problems.

  171. Isn't that true?

  172. Even in the early churches.

  173. And a lot of the things

  174. that Paul wrote in his letters

  175. was to correct a problem.

  176. And so,

  177. one of the things he is praying about,

  178. about that,

  179. experiencing God's power

  180. that brought Jesus from the dead,

  181. Paul wants to experience that power

  182. to be more effective

  183. and maybe in grounding those churches,

  184. helping them to get off

  185. to such a good start

  186. that they didn't have

  187. the kind of problems,

  188. the future churches he started,

  189. like some of the past churches

  190. he started.

  191. Now, the other reason Paul gave

  192. for knowing he needed to grow

  193. was this.

  194. It's real simple.

  195. He was not perfect.

  196. Look at the other part of verse 12.

  197. Not that I've already obtained this

  198. or I'm already perfect.

  199. Paul was well aware.

  200. This is not some kind of,

  201. you know,

  202. he's not sharing a secret here.

  203. He knew it

  204. and everyone who knew it,

  205. who knew him knew it.

  206. He was well aware

  207. that he was not perfect.

  208. He had not overcome

  209. all the struggles in his life.

  210. He had not developed

  211. Christ-like character

  212. to the point

  213. that he thought he should.

  214. Now, you may be thinking,

  215. well, nobody's perfect.

  216. No one

  217. or will ever be perfect

  218. in this world

  219. and that's absolutely true.

  220. No Christian

  221. will ever reach the point

  222. of sinless perfection

  223. this side of heaven.

  224. No one.

  225. Paul didn't.

  226. So,

  227. what does that mean?

  228. What does it mean

  229. for you to admit to yourself,

  230. well, I know

  231. I'm never going to be perfect.

  232. I know I'm never going to overcome

  233. all the sin in my life,

  234. all the struggles.

  235. I'm never going to develop

  236. full Christ-like character.

  237. Does that mean

  238. that you ought to just,

  239. well,

  240. what's the use?

  241. Let's just don't worry about it.

  242. If I'm never going to be perfect,

  243. if I'm never going to totally

  244. get rid of this anger,

  245. this mouth,

  246. I'm never perfectly

  247. going to be able

  248. to demonstrate self-control,

  249. be kind in situations

  250. where it's hard to be kind,

  251. what's the use?

  252. We can't do that.

  253. We can never just sort of

  254. shrug our shoulders and say,

  255. if I can't be perfect,

  256. I'm just not going to worry about it.

  257. That's like saying,

  258. well,

  259. I'll just not worry

  260. if I am angry,

  261. if I mistreat the people

  262. in my life,

  263. if I never truly develop

  264. the kind of Christ-like character

  265. that will enable me

  266. to be a positive influence

  267. in my home

  268. and in my circle of friends.

  269. We know better than that,

  270. don't we?

  271. The fact that we are

  272. not perfect

  273. means we must always work on

  274. overcoming our sinful attitudes

  275. and our actions.

  276. We still have got to strive for it.

  277. We must always work on developing

  278. Christ-like character.

  279. Because we'll never achieve

  280. sinless perfection

  281. does not mean

  282. that we should not seek

  283. to grow spiritually.

  284. It doesn't mean

  285. that we should settle

  286. and just sort of

  287. take it for granted

  288. we're going to be mediocre.

  289. That is not

  290. what you can do

  291. and be a faithful Christian.

  292. You cannot walk with God

  293. and just resolve yourself

  294. to just being bland,

  295. mediocre,

  296. not too bad,

  297. but certainly

  298. not more like Jesus.

  299. What Paul said about himself,

  300. about his need to grow,

  301. understanding his failures,

  302. that's true about

  303. every one of us

  304. in this room.

  305. That's why we need

  306. to make spiritual growth

  307. our priority,

  308. a true desire

  309. of our heart.

  310. You know,

  311. there's a difference

  312. between knowing

  313. you need to grow spiritually.

  314. I mean,

  315. let's just,

  316. if you're a Christian,

  317. only a moron

  318. would not understand

  319. I need to grow spiritually.

  320. Isn't that right?

  321. I mean,

  322. nobody in this room

  323. is so arrogant

  324. as to think,

  325. you know,

  326. I'm where I need to be.

  327. If you don't see,

  328. at least see,

  329. identify,

  330. there's something wrong

  331. with you.

  332. And a counselor

  333. can't help you

  334. if you're that far,

  335. you know,

  336. just that dumb

  337. that you don't understand.

  338. I am lacking

  339. in spiritual growth.

  340. But that does not make you

  341. desire it,

  342. does it?

  343. Does it make you

  344. make that a priority?

  345. I know I need to lose

  346. 10 or 15 pounds

  347. because I see it

  348. every day.

  349. Right there.

  350. I see it.

  351. I don't like it.

  352. I like to get rid of it.

  353. It's not probably good for me.

  354. But I just have to admit,

  355. I don't do one thing

  356. about it.

  357. I'd like to get rid

  358. of this gut.

  359. But I've not made

  360. losing weight,

  361. getting in shape,

  362. and getting rid of it

  363. a priority.

  364. And so,

  365. what good does it really do

  366. for me to say,

  367. I know I need to?

  368. Now,

  369. your spiritual growth,

  370. it's not enough

  371. just to know you need to

  372. are you making it

  373. a priority?

  374. Do you have

  375. a heartfelt desire

  376. to know Jesus Christ

  377. better?

  378. To be closer

  379. to Him?

  380. Do you really

  381. and truly

  382. want to overcome

  383. the sin

  384. in your life

  385. that is preventing you

  386. from enjoying

  387. closeness with God?

  388. And let's be honest,

  389. there's probably

  390. some sin in your life

  391. if you're not

  392. dealing with it,

  393. it's preventing you

  394. from enjoying

  395. some closeness

  396. with the people

  397. that you live with,

  398. that you work with,

  399. that you play with.

  400. You know,

  401. sins,

  402. especially certain sins,

  403. relational type sins,

  404. they don't just hinder

  405. our relationship

  406. with God,

  407. they hinder

  408. our relationships

  409. with everybody

  410. around us,

  411. whether you realize

  412. it or not.

  413. And so,

  414. we need,

  415. in order to please God,

  416. in order to be

  417. the better

  418. husband,

  419. wife,

  420. parent,

  421. child,

  422. friend,

  423. we need to desire

  424. to grow spiritually

  425. and overcome

  426. our sins

  427. and truly develop

  428. more Christ-like character.

  429. But let me ask you this,

  430. do you also desire

  431. to see God's power

  432. at work

  433. in your life?

  434. And that will mainly

  435. be,

  436. I think,

  437. or a lot of that

  438. will be in answer

  439. to your prayers.

  440. I don't know

  441. too many real

  442. miracle workers.

  443. I don't know any.

  444. But I do know

  445. some people

  446. who truly

  447. walk with the Lord

  448. and they

  449. are effective

  450. in prayer.

  451. They pray

  452. according to God's

  453. will.

  454. They're seeking

  455. God's glory,

  456. seeking to honor Him.

  457. They're seeking

  458. what's best

  459. in God's

  460. overall plan

  461. for their life,

  462. other people's lives.

  463. And they pray

  464. accordingly

  465. and they see

  466. people change,

  467. situations change.

  468. Do you want to see

  469. God's power

  470. at work in your life,

  471. especially in

  472. after your prayers?

  473. Let's pause here

  474. for a minute.

  475. Have you ever

  476. thought about how

  477. God

  478. saved you

  479. for the very

  480. purpose

  481. of making you

  482. more like Jesus,

  483. enabling you

  484. to experience

  485. His presence

  486. and power

  487. in your life?

  488. Well,

  489. Paul never forgot

  490. how the Lord

  491. broke into his life

  492. and not only

  493. called him

  494. to himself

  495. but set about

  496. to change Paul

  497. this way.

  498. For those of you

  499. who may not know,

  500. the Apostle Paul

  501. at one time

  502. was an enemy

  503. of Jesus

  504. and the church.

  505. He did everything

  506. in his power

  507. to stop

  508. the spread

  509. of Christianity.

  510. He hunted

  511. down Christians.

  512. He had them

  513. put in jail.

  514. He was responsible

  515. for some people

  516. being put to death

  517. all because

  518. they were Christians.

  519. On one of his trips

  520. up to the town

  521. of Damascus

  522. to arrest

  523. Christians,

  524. the Lord Jesus

  525. just broke

  526. into his life,

  527. knocked him

  528. to the ground,

  529. temporarily blinded

  530. him

  531. and called

  532. him

  533. to trust

  534. Jesus

  535. as his Lord

  536. and Savior.

  537. The Lord

  538. broke into his life

  539. and completely

  540. transformed him,

  541. turned him around,

  542. set him on a

  543. different direction

  544. I want you

  545. to look

  546. at how Paul

  547. described,

  548. he just alludes

  549. to this

  550. in the latter part

  551. of verse 12

  552. or just to read

  553. verse 12.

  554. Paul said,

  555. I press on

  556. to make it

  557. my own

  558. because Christ

  559. Jesus has

  560. made me

  561. his own.

  562. Jesus

  563. intervened

  564. in his life,

  565. called him

  566. to himself,

  567. but the NIV

  568. makes that

  569. clearer.

  570. Look at this,

  571. I press on

  572. to take hold

  573. of that

  574. for which

  575. Christ Jesus

  576. took hold

  577. of me.

  578. And then the

  579. New Living

  580. translation

  581. makes it

  582. even clearer,

  583. I press on

  584. to possess

  585. that perfection

  586. for which

  587. Christ Jesus

  588. first

  589. possessed

  590. me.

  591. never forget

  592. if you're

  593. a Christian,

  594. you're a

  595. Christian

  596. because the

  597. Lord

  598. first

  599. chose you

  600. out of

  601. his grace,

  602. out of

  603. his love,

  604. and called

  605. you

  606. to himself,

  607. to be

  608. his

  609. child,

  610. to be

  611. his follower,

  612. and he did

  613. it for a

  614. purpose.

  615. Now sometimes

  616. the New Testament

  617. describes this

  618. call as

  619. coming from

  620. Jesus.

  621. The Apostle

  622. Paul's initial

  623. call came from

  624. Jesus on the

  625. road to

  626. Damascus.

  627. Well,

  628. Jesus

  629. himself

  630. describes

  631. to his

  632. disciples

  633. how he

  634. called them.

  635. Look at this.

  636. Jesus said

  637. to them,

  638. you do not

  639. choose me,

  640. but I chose

  641. you,

  642. and appointed

  643. you,

  644. so that you

  645. might go and

  646. bear fruit,

  647. fruit that

  648. will last.

  649. I mean,

  650. Jesus is

  651. emphasizing to

  652. those disciples,

  653. you are a

  654. follower of me

  655. because I

  656. chose you.

  657. I called

  658. you to be

  659. with me,

  660. to be mine,

  661. and I

  662. called you

  663. not just to

  664. be mine,

  665. but to do

  666. such a work

  667. in your life

  668. that it

  669. makes a

  670. difference

  671. in how you

  672. live,

  673. and you

  674. produce

  675. spiritual

  676. fruit.

  677. You

  678. demonstrate

  679. that you're

  680. mine by

  681. the way

  682. that you

  683. live is

  684. what he's

  685. talking about.

  686. But more

  687. often than

  688. not,

  689. when the

  690. New Testament

  691. describes our

  692. call,

  693. it describes

  694. it as coming

  695. from God

  696. the Father.

  697. A good

  698. example is

  699. Romans 8,

  700. 29,

  701. and 30.

  702. I want you

  703. to look at

  704. this.

  705. For those

  706. whom he

  707. foreknew,

  708. talking about

  709. God,

  710. for those

  711. whom he,

  712. God the

  713. Father,

  714. foreknew,

  715. he also

  716. predestined

  717. to be

  718. conformed

  719. to the

  720. image of

  721. his Son,

  722. in order

  723. that he

  724. might be

  725. the firstborn

  726. among many

  727. brothers.

  728. And those

  729. whom he

  730. predestined,

  731. he also

  732. called.

  733. And those

  734. whom he

  735. called,

  736. he also

  737. justified.

  738. And those

  739. whom he

  740. justified,

  741. he also

  742. glorified.

  743. Strong

  744. emphasis on

  745. God's work

  746. in us to

  747. call us to

  748. himself.

  749. But what I

  750. want us to

  751. note in

  752. this is that

  753. God's call is

  754. always for a

  755. purpose.

  756. Jesus said,

  757. look at it

  758. again,

  759. I chose

  760. you and

  761. appointed you

  762. so that you

  763. might go and

  764. bear fruit,

  765. fruit that

  766. will last.

  767. God the

  768. Father,

  769. his call,

  770. look at it,

  771. for those

  772. whom he

  773. foreknew,

  774. he also

  775. predestined

  776. to be

  777. conformed

  778. to the

  779. image of

  780. his Son.

  781. If you

  782. are a

  783. Christian,

  784. and you

  785. look at

  786. this,

  787. what these

  788. statements

  789. say,

  790. you should

  791. take comfort

  792. in knowing

  793. that God

  794. just out

  795. of his

  796. grace and

  797. mercy and

  798. love chose

  799. you.

  800. He called

  801. you to be

  802. his child

  803. by trusting

  804. in Jesus as

  805. your Lord and

  806. Savior.

  807. You didn't

  808. deserve it.

  809. You didn't

  810. do anything

  811. to earn it.

  812. Your salvation

  813. was

  814. completely

  815. a gift

  816. of God's

  817. grace.

  818. I want you

  819. to look at

  820. a couple

  821. of verses

  822. that should

  823. be real

  824. familiar to

  825. most of us

  826. in this

  827. room,

  828. but it

  829. emphasizes

  830. what we're

  831. talking about.

  832. It's important

  833. for us to

  834. get this

  835. and let it

  836. sink in.

  837. Paul says,

  838. for by grace

  839. you have been

  840. saved through

  841. faith,

  842. and this is

  843. not your own

  844. doing.

  845. You don't

  846. save yourself.

  847. It is the

  848. gift of God,

  849. not a result

  850. of works.

  851. so that no

  852. one may

  853. boast.

  854. We're

  855. chosen,

  856. called,

  857. saved by

  858. the grace

  859. of God

  860. through faith

  861. in Jesus

  862. Christ,

  863. but it's

  864. equally important

  865. for us to

  866. understand that

  867. we're chosen

  868. for a purpose.

  869. Look at the

  870. very next

  871. verse in

  872. Ephesians 2.

  873. For we are

  874. his workmanship,

  875. created in Christ

  876. Jesus for

  877. good works,

  878. which God

  879. prepared

  880. beforehand,

  881. that we

  882. should walk

  883. in them.

  884. Saved by

  885. grace,

  886. through faith,

  887. through faith in

  888. Jesus,

  889. but we're

  890. saved to

  891. work,

  892. to fulfill the

  893. purpose God

  894. created us

  895. for.

  896. Go back to

  897. what Jesus

  898. said.

  899. He chose

  900. us,

  901. he chose his

  902. disciples to

  903. bear fruit,

  904. fruit that will

  905. last,

  906. and God

  907. chose us

  908. and is

  909. working in

  910. us to

  911. conform us

  912. to the

  913. likeness of

  914. his son.

  915. As we

  916. live in

  917. this world,

  918. as husbands

  919. and wives,

  920. parents and

  921. children,

  922. employers and

  923. employees,

  924. athletes,

  925. musicians,

  926. or whatever

  927. it is that

  928. we are and

  929. do,

  930. God calls

  931. us to be

  932. his faithful

  933. children who

  934. do all kinds

  935. of good works

  936. that are

  937. evident to

  938. everybody,

  939. that we

  940. bear forth

  941. all kinds

  942. of good

  943. fruit that's

  944. obvious we're

  945. children of

  946. God,

  947. and that we

  948. are growing

  949. and becoming

  950. more and more

  951. like Jesus

  952. every day in

  953. terms of

  954. character

  955. development.

  956. Now,

  957. none of us

  958. have done that

  959. perfectly for

  960. one single

  961. day,

  962. and what that

  963. means is we've

  964. got a lot of

  965. work to do.

  966. The good

  967. news is that

  968. God will help

  969. us both

  970. inwardly by

  971. giving us the

  972. desire,

  973. the motivation,

  974. and he will

  975. help us

  976. outwardly by

  977. enabling us to

  978. see some

  979. success,

  980. to make

  981. progress.

  982. We looked at

  983. this a couple

  984. of weeks or a

  985. few weeks ago,

  986. Philippians 2.13,

  987. for it is God

  988. who works in

  989. you both to

  990. will and to

  991. work for his

  992. good pleasure.

  993. See,

  994. salvation is all

  995. of grace.

  996. God chooses

  997. us, calls us,

  998. and he works in

  999. us by his grace

  1000. to give us the

  1001. desire and ability

  1002. to please him.

  1003. We have every

  1004. reason to be

  1005. confident that we

  1006. can grow spiritually.

  1007. You, if you're a

  1008. Christian, I don't

  1009. care who you are,

  1010. what you do, how

  1011. much is going on

  1012. in your life, if

  1013. you're a Christian,

  1014. you have every

  1015. reason to be

  1016. confident that you

  1017. can grow spiritually.

  1018. So let's start

  1019. looking now at what

  1020. spiritual growth

  1021. results.

  1022. Number two, the

  1023. way to respond is,

  1024. and I've changed

  1025. this, this has been

  1026. on the screen, the

  1027. way to respond is

  1028. when you get

  1029. serious about

  1030. growing spiritually.

  1031. As I said,

  1032. everybody knows

  1033. they need to

  1034. grow if you're a

  1035. Christian.

  1036. We're going to

  1037. look at now the

  1038. way to respond when

  1039. you get serious

  1040. about growing

  1041. spiritually.

  1042. I want you to

  1043. look at the

  1044. action words that

  1045. Paul uses to

  1046. describe the

  1047. effort that he

  1048. put forward to

  1049. be what God has

  1050. called him to be.

  1051. Look at this, in

  1052. verse 12, I

  1053. press on to

  1054. make it my

  1055. own.

  1056. 13, straining

  1057. forward to what

  1058. lies ahead.

  1059. Verse 14, I

  1060. press on toward

  1061. the goal for the

  1062. prize.

  1063. You know,

  1064. should know,

  1065. Paul's not

  1066. talking about

  1067. working for

  1068. salvation, but

  1069. he is talking

  1070. about disciplining

  1071. ourselves and

  1072. cooperating with

  1073. God as he works

  1074. in us to make

  1075. us more like

  1076. Jesus.

  1077. Let's go back to

  1078. that example about

  1079. me needing to

  1080. lose weight.

  1081. Do you know the

  1082. reason why I have

  1083. not lost this gut

  1084. even though I'd

  1085. like to?

  1086. Be honest.

  1087. I'll just be

  1088. honest.

  1089. I have not

  1090. exercised any

  1091. self-control or

  1092. personal discipline

1093. in what I eat at

  1094. night between

  1095. supper and

  1096. bedtime.

  1097. that's my

  1098. downfall.

  1099. I know that.

  1100. I love to eat

  1101. potato chips.

  1102. I love little

  1103. Debbie square

  1104. cakes.

  1105. If Will and

  1106. Olivia don't get

  1107. them all, I

  1108. love to eat one

  1109. of those at

  1110. night.

  1111. Now, some

  1112. nights after

  1113. supper, I start

  1114. thinking, I'm not

  1115. going to do that

  1116. tonight.

  1117. I'm not going to

  1118. eat a single

  1119. chip.

  1120. I'm not going to

  1121. eat one little

  1122. cake.

  1123. But at some

  1124. point, I hear

  1125. little Debbie

  1126. calling my name.

  1127. At some point,

  1128. these, what would

  1129. you call them,

  1130. fat cells start

  1131. crying out for

  1132. potato chips.

  1133. that's a silly

  1134. illustration, I

  1135. know.

  1136. But it can

  1137. shine light on

  1138. the spiritual

  1139. warfare, the

  1140. real serious

  1141. warfare that

  1142. every Christian

  1143. experiences.

  1144. Paul describes

  1145. it in

  1146. Galatians 5,

  1147. 17.

  1148. I want you to

  1149. look at this.

  1150. This is what's

  1151. going on in

  1152. every Christian

  1153. life.

  1154. For the

  1155. desires of the

  1156. flesh, that

  1157. could be

  1158. translated sinful

  1159. nature.

  1160. That's what he's

  1161. talking about.

  1162. For the desires

  1163. of our sinful

  1164. nature are

  1165. against the

  1166. spirit, the

  1167. indwelling Holy

  1168. Spirit who is

  1169. seeking to make

  1170. us more like

  1171. Jesus.

  1172. For the desires

  1173. of the flesh are

  1174. against the

  1175. spirit, and the

  1176. desires of the

  1177. spirit are against

  1178. the flesh.

  1179. For these are

  1180. opposed to each

  1181. other to keep

  1182. you from doing

  1183. the things that

  1184. you want.

  1185. Your sinful

  1186. nature does not

  1187. want you to grow

  1188. spiritually.

  1189. That's why you

  1190. have so many

  1191. temptations to do

  1192. sinful things.

  1193. I mean you

  1194. think about it.

  1195. The temptations

  1196. that you encounter.

  1197. You know what

  1198. your weaknesses

  1199. are, what we

  1200. might call pet

  1201. sins are, what

  1202. some of those

  1203. habits that really

  1204. bring you down.

  1205. You know what

  1206. they are, and you

  1207. know how often you

  1208. get tempted by

  1209. that.

  1210. But you know

  1211. sometimes we're

  1212. tempted to allow

  1213. neutral things to

  1214. distract us and

  1215. take us away from

  1216. things that really

  1217. matter.

  1218. Give you an

  1219. example.

  1220. Sometimes on

  1221. Saturday mornings or

  1222. other times during

  1223. the week, I will

  1224. sit down to read

  1225. the Bible.

1226. And as I sit down

  1227. to read the Bible,

  1228. if I didn't do this

  1229. the night before, it

1230. can be early in the

  1231. morning, I'll think.

  1232. If it's during

  1233. football season,

  1234. Friday, if it's on

  1235. Saturday morning, I

  1236. wonder if Pickens

  1237. won last night.

  1238. I wonder if the

  1239. team I'm sort of

  1240. keeping up with in

  1241. college, I wonder if

  1242. they won last night.

  1243. I wonder this and

  1244. that.

  1245. Nothing in the world

  1246. wrong with it.

1247. And I want to be

  1248. honest with you,

  1249. sometimes I'll pull

  1250. out that phone or

  1251. open up that computer

  1252. and I'll check the

  1253. scores.

1254. But when I do that,

  1255. I don't just see if

  1256. Pickens won.

1257. I keep up with all

  1258. high school teams in

  1259. upstate at least.

  1260. I'll look at every

  1261. score.

  1262. I'll look at

  1263. everything on ESPN

  1264. about college

  1265. football.

  1266. And before you know

  1267. it, the times pass,

  1268. I got something else

  1269. I've got to do.

  1270. And my temptation

  1271. wasn't to do

  1272. something sinful in

  1273. and of itself, check

  1274. scores, but it was

1275. sinful for me to give

  1276. in to that distraction

  1277. and take me away

  1278. from spending time

1279. with the Lord when I

  1280. had just that time

  1281. to do it.

1282. We've got to be on

  1283. guard.

1284. The only way we can

  1285. overcome the sinful

  1286. nature is to be

  1287. sensitive to the

  1288. presence of the Holy

  1289. Spirit within us and

  1290. then be obedient as

  1291. He leads us.

  1292. Look at this.

  1293. The verse before

  1294. what we just read,

  1295. Paul says live by

  1296. the Spirit, walk by

  1297. the Spirit.

  1298. Be sensitive to the

  1299. Holy Spirit's

  1300. presence and

  1301. obedient to His

  1302. leadership.

  1303. Walk by the Spirit

  1304. and you will not

  1305. gratify the desires

  1306. of the sinful nature.

  1307. That's the NIV.

  1308. That takes discipline.

  1309. And that's what Paul

  1310. is telling us in

  1311. verses 12 through 14

  1312. that we're going to

1313. come back and look at

  1314. in more detail next

  1315. week and some other

  1316. things.

1317. But right now I want

  1318. to close by just

  1319. a simple question.

1320. Do you want to grow

  1321. spiritually?

1322. Not do you know you

1323. need to because if you

  1324. are a Christian you

  1325. know it.

  1326. Do you really want,

1327. do you desire to grow

  1328. spiritually?

1329. Do you want to develop

  1330. more Christ-like

  1331. character?

1332. Do you really want to

1333. please God by doing His

  1334. will?

  1335. Be honest.

1336. God knows the desires of

  1337. your heart.

1338. If you don't want to

  1339. grow spiritually, if

  1340. you're not willing to

  1341. make the commitment and

  1342. discipline yourself, ask

  1343. God to help you

  1344. understand why it's

  1345. that way.

1346. If you have never, and

  1347. the whole thing I'm

  1348. preaching about this

  1349. morning, it's just a

  1350. turn off to you.

1351. You have no desire to

  1352. grow spiritually.

  1353. You can't be a

  1354. Christian.

  1355. The Spirit of God

1356. cannot live in you and

  1357. never convict you,

  1358. prompt you, encourage

1359. you to draw closer to

1360. the Lord, to serve Him

  1361. more faithfully, to

1362. overcome the sin in your

  1363. life.

  1364. That just will not

  1365. happen.

1366. But it could be that you

1367. are a Christian and you

  1368. have those desires.

1369. And you used to do

  1370. something about it.

  1371. But you've allowed the

  1372. busyness of your life,

  1373. other people, other

  1374. demands, or sinful

  1375. habits to quench the

  1376. Spirit.

1377. You've not acted on it,

1378. and so the desire has

  1379. dwindled.

  1380. dwindled.

  1381. I want you to

  1382. understand that's

  1383. serious.

1384. When you have sensed the

  1385. closeness of God, the

1386. presence of God, but you

  1387. don't now.

1388. I would encourage you, if

  1389. that's you, spend some

1390. time with the Lord today.

  1391. Admit your sin, your

  1392. selfishness, your

  1393. preoccupation with

1394. whatever else it is that

  1395. has hindered you, gotten

1396. in the way of your

  1397. relationship with the

  1398. Lord.

1399. And draw back close to

  1400. Him.

1401. Ask Him to help you to

  1402. rearrange your schedule,

  1403. to make some new

  1404. priorities, and to make

1405. Him first on the list as

1406. far as spending time with,

  1407. getting to know better,

  1408. becoming more like Jesus.

1409. Think about, where are you

  1410. right now in your

  1411. relationship with God?

1412. Where do you need to be?

  1413. Make the commitment to

1414. obey God and move in the

  1415. direction He's calling you.

  1416. Let's pray together.

1417. Dear God, first I pray for

1418. anyone in this room who is

  1419. not a Christian.

1420. Maybe you just revealed it to

1421. them today or maybe they've

  1422. always known.

1423. But Lord, I pray that you

  1424. will convict them, show

  1425. them their need for

  1426. salvation.

1427. Create within them a desire

1428. to turn from their sin, to

1429. truly trust Jesus as their

1430. Savior and Lord, and surrender

1431. their lives to Him and follow

  1432. Him.

1433. Father, if there are Christians

1434. in this room whose desire is

1435. not as strong as it used to

1436. be, disturb them over that,

1437. cause them to realize that

1438. they're on shaky ground, and

1439. call them back in confession,

  1440. in repentance, in renewed

  1441. commitment.

1442. Whet their appetite, dear God,

1443. for the things of God.

1444. Father, for Christians in this

1445. room who are mature, who are

1446. growing, who desire to grow

1447. more, encourage them, dear God.

1448. Encourage them when they see the

1449. closer they get to you, the more

1450. aware they are of the sin and

  1451. shortcomings in their life.

1452. Help them to see this is a sign

1453. of being a mature Christian, being

1454. more like the Apostle Paul.

1455. And help them, dear God, to just

1456. keep on, to remain faithful, and to

1457. see how you do enable them to

1458. become more like Jesus, love you

1459. more, and serve you more effectively

1460. in the days to come.

1461. It's just all an attitude of

1462. prayer, listen to the Lord, and

1463. respond to Him this morning.

  1464. Amen.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. Amen.

  1467. Amen.

  1468. Amen.

  1469. Amen.

  1470. Amen.

  1471. Amen.

  1472. Amen.

  1473. Amen.

  1474. Amen.

  1475. Amen.
