  1. If you have your Bibles, I want you to turn with me to the book of Jonah.

  2. And we're going to look at the book of Jonah this morning,

  3. and I'm going to preach all four chapters this morning.

  4. It's probably going to take two or three hours,

  5. but I know that you don't mind and you don't have anywhere to go.

  6. No, I'm teasing.

  7. I'm going to do it in about 30, 35 minutes.

  8. And there's a reason, because some books of the Bible you need to dissect

  9. and look at verse by verse by verse.

  10. And some books of the Bible, to be honest with you,

  11. you need to start in chapter 1 and read them all the way to the end

  12. and then step back and ask yourself, what is God saying?

  13. And this is one of those kind of books.

  14. You're actually better off, you'll understand the book better

  15. if you read it as a whole than if you dissect it into many, many different parts.

  16. How many of you remember the movie Forrest Gump?

  17. How many of you actually saw that movie?

  18. Raise your hand real high, Forrest Gump.

  19. That's great.

  20. All God's people saw that movie, right?

  21. It's a great, great movie.

  22. I think it's probably my favorite movie of all time.

  23. I got a lot of favorites, but I really think that's right there near the top.

  24. It's probably the most quoted movie I can ever remember seeing in my lifetime,

  25. and I don't think I ever laughed harder or experienced a wealth of emotions more

  26. in any other picture than that.

  27. There were times I'd just laugh myself silly,

  28. and other times, I mean, tears would be streaming down my face.

  29. It was just a heart-touching movie.

  30. Let me just test your memory on something, prove what I saw about her.

  31. See if you can remember some of these quotes.

  32. Forrest used to say, my mama always said what?

  33. Anybody remember?

  34. Now, you're going to read it.

  35. You're going to get the clue, right?

  36. Well, go ahead and say it with me.

  37. Life is like a box of chocolates.

  38. You never know what you're going to get.

  39. Mama was a wise gal.

  40. She said, life is like a box of chocolates.

  41. You never know what you're going to get.

  42. She also said, stupid is as stupid does.

  43. Remember that?

  44. And then he said of Jenny, me and Jenny go together like peas and carrots.

  45. And then in the end of the movie, when she's trying to convince him that she's not right for him,

  46. remember what Forrest says?

  47. He says, I'm not a smart man, but I know what love is.

  48. That was a great statement, wasn't it?

  49. I remember so many things about that movie.

  50. Here are a few of my favorite things that occurred in that movie.

  51. You remember when he's on the park bench and people would come up and they'd sit down beside him

  52. and have those little conversations?

  53. Wasn't that a great, great part of the movie?

  54. And remember when he went to play football at Alabama and he played for Bear Bryant

  55. and they gave him the ball and, boy, he was fast, greased, lightning.

  56. He goes around the end.

  57. He runs down the sideline, scores the touchdown.

  58. They just forgot to tell him to stop.

  59. And he keeps running right out of the stadium.

  60. Remember that?

  61. And then, of course, he ran and ran and ran all across the West.

  62. And he comes to a place where he says, I think I'm tired.

  63. I'm going to stop.

  64. Love that part.

  65. When he's on the bus with Bubba, his buddy who later, they started a shrimp business.

  66. And he says, here are all the ways you can fix shrimp.

  67. So many different things about that movie caught my attention.

  68. One of the best things, the ping pong scene now that we're in the Olympics.

  69. Remember when he plays ping pong and it's just incredible how fast he can play?

  70. Here's my question to you.

  71. Is that a movie about ping pong?

  72. Is it a movie about football?

  73. Is it a movie about shrimp?

  74. Is it a movie about waiting on a bus or getting off a school bus or fleeing from bullies or standing at the Washington Mall?

  75. It's not about any of those things.

  76. That's just things that set up the telling of the story, right?

  77. And here's what's at the heart of the movie, and you may have never thought about this movie that seriously before.

  78. But if you really sat down and you gave it some thought, and I've had the opportunity to do that, you're kind of at a disadvantage springing this on you this morning.

  79. But if you sat down and thought about it, I think you'd probably agree with this assessment.

  80. This is a movie about how a simple man can love so profoundly, and his love impacts the people who he interacts with.

  81. I mean, in a marvelous, profound way.

  82. Remember Jenny?

  83. Boy, how he loved Jenny.

  84. And how he loved his mother.

  85. And how he loved Captain Dan.

  86. And how he loved Bubba.

  87. And then ultimately, how he loved his little boy through Jenny, right?

  88. It's a powerful, powerful movie.

  89. But it's not about any of those other things.

  90. They're just things we see as we watch the movie.

  91. You say, why are you telling me this?

  92. Because that's the way it is with the book of Jonah.

  93. I want to tell you the story, and when I finish, I don't think anyone here will say,

  94. you took a liberty with that, because I'm going to try to tell you as forthrightly the book of Jonah in just a few minutes as I possibly can.

  95. Here goes, you ready?

  96. Chapter 1, Jonah gets a call from God.

  97. God says, Jonah, I want you to go to the north and to the east, to Assyria, and I want you to preach.

  98. I'm going to destroy that city in 40 days unless they repent.

  99. Go tell them to repent.

  100. You know what Jonah does?

  101. He heads west.

  102. He goes to the coast.

  103. He catches a ship.

  104. He's headed toward Spain.

  105. He's going to Tarsus.

  106. They don't get too far offshore until a great storm begins to prevail.

  107. And the scripture says that Jonah, while others are scurrying about experienced seamen knowing their lives on the line,

  108. they're throwing cargo overboard.

  109. They're trying to lighten the load so the ship will rise in the water.

  110. They're fearful it's going to be swamped and they'll sink.

  111. And they find Jonah asleep in the belly of the ship.

  112. Jonah, how can you be asleep?

  113. Man, we're about to die.

  114. We're all calling out to our gods.

  115. We worship an assortment of gods.

  116. Why don't you call to your God?

  117. Maybe he'll reveal who's at fault here.

  118. Jonah turns to him and says, hey, I don't need to do that.

  119. I know who's at fault.

  120. It's me.

  121. I'm fleeing from God.

  122. I'm disobedient to God.

  123. And so God has brought about this storm.

  124. If you want the storm to end, you need to throw me overboard.

  125. Well, they're reluctant to do that.

  126. They continue to lighten the load of the ship.

  127. Finally, there's no other alternative.

  128. Reluctantly, they throw him overboard.

  129. Immediately, the sea's calm.

  130. He's drifting down through the waters to the very bottom, chapter 2 tells us,

  131. when God rescues him through a fish that we read about in chapter 1.

  132. He has prepared a great fish.

  133. The fish swoops down and swallows Jonah whole.

  134. Incredible.

  135. You'd think he'd have been bitten by the fish, devoured by the fish.

  136. He swallows Jonah whole.

  137. Chapter 2, he's in the belly of the fish.

  138. He's there three days, and he begins to pray, God, somehow rescue me.

  139. Well, God does just that.

  140. He spits him up through the whale or through the great fish on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

  141. He immediately goes to Assyria as he was instructed to do the first time.

  142. Chapter 3.

  143. He gets to Assyria.

  144. There are 120,000 people in this city.

  145. Now, just think with me, using common sense.

  146. No skyscrapers.

  147. No apartment complexes.

  148. So, to have 120,000 people, you know this is an expansive city.

  149. He begins walking from one end of the city to the other, and as he walks, here's what he's saying and preaching.

  150. 40 days and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.

  151. 40 days and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.

  152. Hey, 40 days and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.

  153. He gets to the end.

  154. He's actually hopeful that no one is going to heed his message.

  155. That's what he's hoping.

  156. They won't listen.

  157. God will rain down fire on them.

  158. They'll be destroyed.

  159. He goes to this mountaintop, chapter 4, and he's perched on the mountaintop, and he's looking at the city of Nineveh.

  160. He's angry because he's already made up his mind what's going to happen.

  161. In his mind, he's thinking, I know, I know, I know.

  162. That's why I didn't want to come.

  163. God is going to relent, and God is going to forgive these people.

  164. And sure enough, that's what happened.

  165. They adorn themselves with sackcloth and ashes, a means of showing repentance.

  166. They call out to God, and God is merciful.

  167. From the king down, everyone in Assyria, they repent of their sin, and God spares Nineveh.

  168. So here's Jonah.

  169. He's angry as an old, wet horn.

  170. Let me ask you.

  171. I want to ask you to raise your hand.

  172. Have you ever been so angry you could just hardly spit?

  173. I mean, you're just so mad.

  174. The veins are protruding in your neck.

  175. Your face, the countenance of your face is changed.

  176. Your fists are clenched.

  177. I mean, you're just angry.

  178. And almost angry, can't even talk.

  179. Any of you ever been that way?

  180. Well, that's where Jonah is.

  181. He's that mad.

  182. God speaks to him, Jonah, why are you so mad?

  183. He says, Lord, back in Exodus 34, it says,

  184. You're compassionate and slow to anger and patient and long-suffering and forgiving,

  185. and you forgave the Hebrews back at Mount Sinai,

  186. and I knew this was going to happen.

  187. That's why I didn't want to come here and preach.

  188. Well, he refuses to really say any more to God.

  189. And guess what God does?

  190. He allows this vine to begin to grow,

  191. and it grows up until it covers Jonah's head

  192. and becomes a shelter for Jonah.

  193. Jonah is now more pleased.

  194. He's out of the hot sun, the baking sun of the Mideast.

  195. He's shaded from the sun, a little more bearable now,

  196. until the next morning when he awakens, guess what?

  197. God has prepared a worm, and the worm comes,

  198. and he eats this plant that's growing over Jonah's head.

  199. He devours the root, and the plant withers and dies.

  200. On top of that, God sends a scorching, the Bible says,

  201. scorching east wind, and now he's miserable.

  202. Any of you ever been out in the desert?

  203. I lived in El Paso for about a year one time.

  204. Boy, it can get so hot in the desert,

  205. and when it's dry and the wind gets up and the sand starts blowing,

  206. and you've seen pictures of that in the Middle East, right?

  207. Our soldiers in Afghanistan and those different places,

  208. Syria, different places.

  209. He is miserable beyond belief,

  210. and this time he just explodes,

  211. and he really takes it to God.

  212. I knew this would happen.

  213. I knew this.

  214. I wish I could die.

  215. Boy, you better be glad I wouldn't, God,

  216. because I said, okie dokie.

  217. We'll just let you die right here.

  218. But God doesn't.

  219. He's patient with it.

  220. And then God gives him this message.

  221. He says, Jonah,

  222. how is it that you're discomfortable

  223. because this vine that was over your head

  224. and sheltering you from the sun has withered and died,

  225. and you didn't do anything to bring about its growth?

  226. You didn't plant it.

  227. You didn't cultivate it.

  228. It just appeared.

  229. And now that it's gone because of this worm

  230. and there's a scorching wind,

  231. you are just beside yourself and living,

  232. and you'd rather die than continue living.

  233. When down below,

  234. there are 120,000 people.

  235. Now listen to this.

  236. This is a stinging indictment.

  237. Down below, there are 120,000 people.

  238. Can you imagine how many people that is?

  239. You see Clemson Stadium on a Saturday,

  240. and it's about 80,000 people?

  241. You hack that again.

  242. That's 120,000 people.

  243. He says there are 120,000 people.

  244. They're not uncomfortable.

  245. They're not just hot.

  246. There's not just a scorching east wind.

  247. They don't know their left hand from their right hand,

  248. and in 40 days,

  249. they're all going to die unless I intervene and rescue them.

  250. And all you can think about is your own discomfort.

  251. Now that's the story of Jonah.

  252. Here's the million-dollar question.

  253. What's it about?

  254. What do you think God wants us to take away from that?

  255. I want to begin by telling you what the book is not about,

  256. two things it's not about,

  257. and I'm going to tell you one thing it is about.

  258. And some of you may leave here a little shook

  259. because you'll say, you know what?

  260. I always thought it was about this,

  261. but really true it's not.

  262. Let me begin by telling you this is not a fish story.

  263. All the part about the great fish is interesting,

  264. and it's real,

  265. and it's historically accurate,

  266. and I think it really and truly happened,

  267. but I want you to understand this.

  268. This is not a fish story.

  269. And sadly, sometimes when we hear people teach our children,

  270. that's what they seemingly make this all about.

  271. It's all about the great fish,

  272. and it's not.

  273. And sometimes in worship in certain places

  274. where guys don't handle the passage right,

  275. I've heard folks, even adults,

  276. preachers stand in the pulpit

  277. and talk about that great fish

  278. more than they talk about anything else,

  279. how God did it,

  280. and try to convince people.

  281. It's historically accurate.

  282. It's historically accurate

  283. because Jesus affirms it.

  284. Jesus says in the New Testament,

  285. even as Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days,

  286. so the Son of Man will be in the grave three days.

  287. That settles it.

  288. It happened.

  289. But I want to tell you something.

  290. There's no way you're ever going to make sense of that someone

  291. unless they see this as a miracle

  292. because that's what it is.

  293. You understand it?

  294. It's a miracle.

  295. A fish doesn't swallow a man

  296. never had before that time,

  297. never has after that time,

  298. and the man not be devoured

  299. and live even further in the belly of the fish

  300. for three days.

  301. That just doesn't happen unless,

  302. why?

  303. It's a miracle.

  304. So you either got to accept it as a miracle

  305. or you got to say,

  306. that didn't happen.

  307. I choose to believe

  308. it happened exactly as the scripture said.

  309. It's a miracle,

  310. but here's the deal.

  311. That's not why God did it.

  312. He didn't give us this book

  313. so you would say,

  314. wow, how powerful God is

  315. because he created this fish

  316. in which a man could survive for three days.

  317. Is it true?

  318. It's true.

  319. But don't miss what the book is about.

  320. It's not a fish story.

  321. And I'm going to prove it to you right now.

  322. I'm going to show you something

  323. you may have never seen before.

  324. And I want you to look at the scripture

  325. so if you got your Bible,

  326. I don't care what translation you're using,

  327. I want you to open your Bible

  328. and look at Jonah chapter 1 and verse 17.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  329. Now, as soon as you found it,

  330. you got that?

  331. Look up and look at me.

  332. It's real important,

  333. just for a second.

  334. How many of you are using the King James Version?

  335. Raise your hand if you're using it.

  336. Anybody here?

  337. One there in the balcony?

  338. Anywhere else?

  339. New King James Version.

  340. Anybody?

  341. One over here?

  342. One here?

  343. A couple back there?

  344. How many are using the NAS?

  345. One, two, three here?

  346. Anybody else?

  347. How about the Holman?

  348. The ESV?

  349. A bunch with ESV, I'm sure.

  350. Okay.

  351. I don't care what translation.

  352. NIV.

  353. Oh, a lot of you NIV people.

  354. NLT.

  355. Anybody else?

  356. Okay.

  357. Down here on the front,

  358. a couple there in the back.

  359. Now, listen to me carefully.

  360. I don't care which translation you're using.

  361. It's all going to be the same in this sense.

  362. The writer of Hebrews,

  363. or the writer of Jonah, rather,

  364. in Hebrew,

  365. is giving us chapter 1 and verse 17,

  366. and he's going to use a word

  367. that's going to be used repeatedly

  368. here in the book of Jonah.

  369. Look at 117.

  370. I'm reading from the Holman,

  371. and the ESV says the same thing.

  372. The Lord appointed a great fish.

  373. Now,

  374. I'm talking about the word appointed.

  375. Look at your translation

  376. and see what it says.

  377. You see what it says?

  378. If you're reading from the King James Version,

  379. prepared.

  380. NAS,

  381. designated.

  382. NIV,

  383. provided.

  384. NLT,

  385. arranged.

  386. ASV,

  387. prepared.

  388. Anybody see anything different than that?

  389. That's what they all say, right?

  390. Now, let me show you something else.

  391. Go with me to chapter 4

  392. and look at verse 6.

  393. It's where he describes

  394. this plant

  395. that grew over Jonah's head.

  396. In my translation,

  397. remember what I said?

  398. It said in the Holman,

  399. the ESV,

  400. appointed.

  401. Chapter 4,

  402. verse 6,

  403. the Lord appointed a plant.

  404. Now,

  405. look at your translation,

  406. whatever it is.

  407. Whatever it says in 4, 6,

  408. that's what it's going to say in 117.

  409. This is yes and no.

  410. You got it?

  411. Isn't that right?

  412. Everybody agree with that?

  413. Whatever word it used

  414. in chapter 117,

  415. he uses that same word

  416. in chapter 4,

  417. verse 6.

  418. Now,

  419. go to the next verse,

  420. verse 7.

  421. The Lord appointed a worm.

  422. Again,

  423. whatever word is used

  424. of that worm

  425. is used of the plant,

  426. is used of the great fish.

  427. Finally,

  428. go to 4, 8.

  429. God appointed

  430. a scorching east wind.

  431. Whatever word you use

  432. in 4, 8,

  433. it uses in 4, 7.

  434. In 4, 6,

  435. in 117.

  436. Now,

  437. look up and listen

  438. and get this.

  439. Stay on the page with me.

  440. These are all

  441. things that historically,

  442. realistically,

  443. authentically happened.

  444. They are all miracles

  445. and they are all props

  446. of God

  447. in the telling

  448. of this story.

  449. And that's all they are.

  450. We get all

  451. worked up

  452. over the big fish,

  453. but the big fish

  454. is no more

  455. a miracle

  456. than the plant

  457. or the worm

  458. or the scorching wind.

  459. Do you see that?

  460. I want to show you

  461. something you may

  462. not have thought about.

  463. How many of you

  464. have always marveled

  465. how fast kudzu grows?

  466. Well,

  467. I'm from Oconee County.

  468. It'll just take over

  469. the world sooner or later,

  470. right?

  471. Kudzu?

  472. It'll cover every building

  473. inside you get a chance.

  474. It grows.

  475. In the mountains,

  476. I had a pastor one time,

  477. he was from Bat Cave

  478. and he told me

  479. in the mountains,

  480. we call it foot of day

  481. because that's how much

  482. it'll grow.

  483. They come and they cut

  484. along the highway,

  485. it'll grow a foot

  486. before you come back

  487. the next day.

  488. I don't know

  489. if that's true or not.

  490. My wife has a begonia

  491. and you can take

  492. a cutting of this begonia

  493. and put it in water

  494. and put it in dirt

  495. and I want to tell you something,

  496. you come back

  497. three to four weeks later

  498. and that begonia

  499. will be this high.

  500. We've got two

  501. beside our front door.

  502. They just grow,

  503. you can't kill them.

  504. They just grow like crazy.

  505. Could a man hide

  506. beneath that begonia

  507. as fast as it grows

  508. and get shelter?

  509. I'm going to tell you something.

  510. For a plant to come up

  511. out of the ground

  512. and to cover a man's head

  513. and he can make a shelter

  514. from it in a single day,

  515. that's a miracle.

  516. Would you agree with that?

  517. That's nothing short

  518. of a miracle.

  519. A fish that can swallow

  520. a man and him be unharmed

  521. after living three days

  522. in his belly,

  523. that's a miracle.

  524. Well, what about the worm?

  525. The worm doesn't get

  526. his just due, does he?

  527. The worm comes along

  528. and eats away at this plant

  529. and within hours,

  530. it dies.

  531. That's a pretty powerful worm,

  532. wouldn't you say?

  533. God has given that worm

  534. pretty special powers.

  535. This scorching east wind,

  536. I believe,

  537. came absolutely out of nowhere.

  538. If there had been

  539. a meteorologist that morning,

  540. he wouldn't have said,

  541. hey, today there's going

  542. to be a scorching east wind.

  543. It's going to be tough

  544. on us here in Nineveh.

  545. God created that

  546. and it came out

  547. of absolutely nowhere.

  548. But understand this,

  549. each one of those

  550. are props

  551. in the telling of the story

  552. and the worm is not the story

  553. and the plant's not the story

  554. and the scorching east wind

  555. is not the story.

  556. And the fish

  557. is not the story.

  558. Everybody with me?

  559. I want to tell you

  560. a second thing that's not.

  561. And this second thing

  562. is a mistake

  563. that some preachers have made.

  564. I probably made it

  565. sometime in my life.

  566. We look at chapter one

  567. and see Jonah's

  568. saying, yes, I'll go

  569. and then his disobedience

  570. and then he's swallowed

  571. by the fish

  572. and he repents

  573. and he's thrown up

  574. on the shore

  575. and we say,

  576. how important

  577. our obedience

  578. to God is

  579. in accomplishing

  580. what God

  581. is wanting to do.

  582. This is not a story

  583. about how important

  584. we are

  585. in God's will

  586. being accomplished.

  587. We way,

  588. way,

  589. way

  590. overemphasize

  591. Jonah's importance

  592. if you make that

  593. the teaching

  594. that comes

  595. out of this passage.

  596. I want to tell you

  597. something.

  598. God could have

  599. resurrected

  600. Balaam's donkey

  601. from the dead

  602. and send him

  603. to Nineveh

  604. and in my estimation

  605. he'd have probably

  606. done a better job

  607. of preaching

  608. than Jonah did.

  609. If you think

  610. that city

  611. got saved

  612. because of

  613. Jonah's great

  614. preaching,

  615. you have missed

  616. this story.

  617. I want to tell you,

  618. he reluctantly,

  619. even after being

  620. swallowed by the fish,

  621. goes to Nineveh

  622. and preaches

  623. and I think

  624. it was probably

  625. as sorry a message

  626. as anybody

  627. has ever preached.

  628. It's obvious

  629. by how he reacts

  630. in chapter four,

  631. he doesn't want

  632. these people

  633. to respond

  634. and so I can see

  635. Jonah now

  636. hands in his pocket

  637. 40 days

  638. and God's going

  639. to wipe you

  640. off the face

  641. of the earth

  642. and under his breath

  643. and I kind of

  644. hope he does.

  645. 40 days

  646. and Nineveh

  647. is going to be

  648. destroyed.

  649. 40 days

  650. and Nineveh

  651. is going to be

  652. destroyed

  653. and he does

  654. that three days

  655. and then he goes

  656. off and he pouts

  657. and he's hoping

  658. that God is going

  659. to bring judgment

  660. on but instead

  661. God shows

  662. absolute

  663. mercy.

  664. I'm telling you

  665. it is not about

  666. how God needs us

  667. for his will

  668. to be accomplished.

  669. I want to tell you

  670. something.

  671. You need to obey

  672. God because if you

  673. obey God

  674. God will bless

  675. in your life

  676. and you will

  677. live close to God

  678. and know fellowship

  679. and communion

  680. with God

  681. and he is God

  682. and we need to

  683. obey him

  684. and bring him

  685. glory.

  686. But if you do

  687. not obey him

  688. I want to tell you

  689. something.

  690. You will never

  691. keep God's will

  692. from coming about.

  693. He is sovereign

  694. and God is going

  695. to do what God

  696. desires to do

  697. and God desired

  698. to save Nineveh

  699. and Jonah was not

  700. about to get in the

  701. way of that

  702. occurring.

  703. So let's bring it

  704. home.

  705. What is this story

  706. about?

  707. One simple truth.

  708. Please understand

  709. this.

  710. This is a story

  711. about the incredible

  712. mercy and grace

  713. of God.

  714. Did you get that?

  715. Had you ever

  716. thought that before?

  717. I hope so.

  718. This story is about

  719. one thing.

  720. The story of Jonah

  721. is about the

  722. matchless,

  723. wonderful,

  724. powerful love

  725. of God

  726. for humanity.

  727. He loves

  728. sinners.

  729. He loves people

  730. who are way,

  731. way, way

  732. away from him.

  733. We may not

  734. give a nickel

  735. about them

  736. but God

  737. loves them.

  738. It's about the

  739. grace and the

  740. mercy and the

  741. depths of the

  742. love of God.

  743. Now listen to me

  744. carefully.

  745. If I want to

  746. demonstrate how

  747. white white is,

  748. do you know how

  749. I do that?

  750. I put it against

  751. a backdrop of

  752. black.

  753. There's no better

  754. way to show the

  755. whiteness of white

  756. than against the

  757. backdrop of black.

  758. There's no better

  759. way to show the

  760. blackness of black

  761. than to put it

  762. against the

  763. backdrop of white.

  764. Nothing contrasts

  765. black like white

  766. or white like black.

  767. And that's what God

  768. does in this book.

  769. God is bringing us

  770. to chapter four so

  771. he can say to

  772. everyone in this

  773. room and to

  774. Jonah and to the

  775. people of that day

  776. and time,

  777. I want to show you

  778. how I love and

  779. I want to show

  780. you how you

  781. love.

  782. I want to show

  783. you what concerns

  784. me and I want to

  785. show you what

  786. concerns you.

  787. Jonah, you're all

  788. about your comfort.

  789. Man, when that

  790. vine grew over

  791. your head and

  792. there was shade

  793. and it was

  794. blistering hot and

  795. you found comfort

  796. and shade, you

  797. were okay.

  798. your temper began

  799. to ease because

  800. really and truly,

  801. Jonah, you know

  802. what you're all

  803. about?

  804. You are all

  805. about you.

  806. You are self

  807. absorbed.

  808. You're the picture

  809. of what it is to

  810. be self absorbed.

  811. As long as things

  812. are good in your

  813. world, it's okay.

  814. But Jonah, look

  815. below you.

  816. There are 120,000,

  817. listen to this,

  818. older men like here

  819. this morning and

  820. middle-aged men and

  821. young men and

  822. young women and

  823. middle-aged women

  824. and older women and

  825. children and babies

  826. just like they're in

  827. Nineveh.

  828. Not to even talk

  829. about their livestock

  830. and their animals.

  831. And those people

  832. are pitiful.

  833. You know how God

  834. describes them?

  835. In chapter 4, just

  836. turn with me and

  837. look there.

  838. Look in chapter 4

  839. in verse 10.

  840. This is what God

  841. says.

  842. So the Lord said,

  843. you cared about the

  844. plant which you did

  845. not labor over and

  846. did not grow.

  847. It appeared in a

  848. night and perished

  849. in a night.

  850. Should I not care

  851. about the great city

  852. of Nineveh, which

  853. has more than 120,000

  854. people who cannot

  855. distinguish between

  856. their right and

  857. their left as well

  858. as many animals?

  859. Boy, what a

  860. stinging indictment.

  861. He says, you're so

  862. concerned about that

  863. vine.

  864. Should I not be

  865. concerned about that

  866. 120,000?

  867. And this is what he

  868. says, who can't

  869. distinguish their

  870. left from their

  871. right.

  872. You know what that

  873. means?

  874. They are spiritually

  875. blind.

  876. They don't have any

  877. moral, spiritual

  878. compass.

  879. Can I just ask you

  880. folk at First Baptist

  881. Pigs, are you aware

  882. how blessed you are?

  883. Not all of you, but

  884. many of you are like

  885. myself.

  886. You are raised in

  887. Christians' homes.

  888. You worshipped in a

  889. beautiful facility like

  890. this most all your

  891. life.

  892. You had copy after

  893. copy of copy of the

  894. word of God in your

  895. home.

  896. If you don't have a

  897. sense of moral

  898. direction, it's your

  899. own fault.

  900. But there are billions

  901. of people out there in

  902. our world, about a

  903. billion Chinese.

  904. They don't have a clue

  905. who Jesus is.

  906. They're about a billion

  907. Indians.

  908. They don't have a clue

  909. who God is.

  910. And we look at them

  911. and we judge them and

  912. we say, man, they do

  913. such crazy things and

  914. they're acting this way

  915. and that way.

  916. And even people in our

  917. own culture who've never

  918. been exposed to the

  919. gospel, many of them.

  920. People like LBGQT.

  921. I mean, they do crazy

  922. things and we look at

  923. that and we say, my

  924. goodness, how could they

  925. be so perverted?

  926. I'll tell you what, they

  927. don't know their left

  928. hand from their right

  929. hand.

  930. Do you understand that?

  931. They don't have a moral

  932. compass.

  933. They don't have a

  934. spiritual compass.

  935. And so they're lost.

  936. My friend, that's the

  937. message of the book of

  938. Jonah.

  939. Can I make three or four

  940. real, real quick?

  941. I mean, just about a

  942. minute, a point.

  943. Three or four quick

  944. observations.

  945. Here's the first.

  946. First and foremost, Jonah

  947. is a picture.

  948. You won't like this.

  949. I don't like it.

  950. Of us.

  951. Jonah is a picture of

  952. me.

  953. It's a picture of you.

  954. It's a picture of us.

  955. And when I say us, I'm

  956. getting personal.

  957. I'm not talking about

  958. people outside the faith.

  959. I'm not talking about

  960. humanity.

  961. It's a picture of those

  962. of us who claim to know

  963. God.

  964. Because I got news for you.

  965. We're pretty self-absorbed.

  966. We say, I'm not like

  967. old Noah, man.

  968. I'm concerned about lost

  969. people.

  970. We're concerned about

  971. lost people in name.

  972. I mean, if we see

  973. pictures of people in

  974. countries who don't know

  975. God and they're

  976. perishing, we go like

  977. this.

  978. Boy, that's bad.

  979. That's terrible.

  980. Sunsuit teacher really

  981. did a good job bringing

  982. that point home this

  983. morning.

  984. That mission speaker did

  985. a good job.

  986. Let's go get a

  987. cheeseburger.

  988. You want to?

  989. What's for lunch today?

  990. And we rush off to our

  991. comfortable little homes.

  992. Truth of the matter is,

  993. we get way more worried

  994. if the stock market

  995. suddenly collapses.

  996. If the housing market

  997. suddenly collapses.

  998. Oh, that's what gets us

  999. upset.

1000. If one of us gets sick

1001. and has to go to the

  1002. hospital, now that'll get

  1003. our attention.

  1004. Because, you see, we're

  1005. pretty self-absorbed.

1006. This is a book about us.

  1007. It's a book about us.

  1008. Secondly, people in our

  1009. world are exactly like

1010. the people who live in

  1011. Syria.

1012. They're as lost as they

  1013. can be.

  1014. Sorry, I'm having trouble

1015. with this with my big old

  1016. ears.

1017. They're just as lost as

  1018. they can be.

1019. They don't know up from

  1020. down, right from left,

  1021. and they're just lost.

1022. And that's the way it is

  1023. with those folk in

  1024. Assyria as well.

1025. Look at a third point.

1026. Like Jonah, we don't like

  1027. them very much.

1028. If we're just really honest,

1029. we don't like the lost people

1030. of the world very much.

1031. And we don't like them for

1032. the same reasons that Jonah

  1033. didn't like them.

1034. And you know why he didn't

  1035. like them?

1036. Because they were a threat

  1037. to him.

  1038. He knew that.

1039. In 722, Assyria is going to

  1040. forsake God, and they're

1041. going to march south into

  1042. Jerusalem and into Israel.

1043. And they're going to defeat

  1044. Israel.

1045. And it's going to collapse

1046. and be no more as a nation

  1047. until 1948.

  1048. I don't know if Jonah saw

1049. that coming or not, but he

1050. knew they were a real

  1051. serious threat.

1052. And that's the reason he

1053. didn't want to see them

  1054. saved.

1055. He wanted them to perish

1056. because he didn't like them.

1057. And I'll tell you, they

  1058. earned their reputation.

1059. They were a brutal bunch.

  1060. Man, they would scatter

  1061. people.

  1062. They weakened every culture,

  1063. every country, every society

  1064. they ever conquered.

1065. So they had earned their

  1066. reputation.

1067. And if we'll be real, real

1068. honest, we don't like the

1069. lost people of the world

  1070. today either, do we?

1071. What we like to do is find

1072. somebody who's kind of like

1073. us and share the gospel

1074. with him and see them be

  1075. saved.

1076. But if they're really out

1077. there on the edge and

1078. they're way away from us

  1079. and they don't have a clue

  1080. about spiritual things,

  1081. eh, they're expendable.

  1082. They're disposable.

1083. Fourthly and finally, and I

1084. close, in spite of how we

  1085. feel, God loves them.

1086. In spite of how we feel, boy,

  1087. God loves them.

1088. And that's what the book of

  1089. Jonah is all about.

1090. He's just wanting to pound

1091. home to Jonah and pound home

1092. to us how much he cares for

  1093. people who are sinners.

  1094. And you know what?

1095. When his son comes on the

1096. scene in the New Testament,

1097. and we're going to get that in

  1098. a few weeks, you're going to

1099. find the same thing is true

  1100. of Jesus.

1101. He is a friend of sinners.

1102. He is a friend of sinners.

1103. They may not matter to us,

  1104. but they matter like

  1105. everything to God.

1106. And because they matter to

1107. him, they should matter to

  1108. us.

1109. I want to tell you something.

1110. The gospel is the gospel

1111. and it's good news for us.

1112. And it was good news for the

  1113. Hebrews.

1114. And it was good news for the

  1115. Assyrians.

1116. And I want to tell you something.

1117. It's good news for our world.

1118. When I was a young man getting

1119. ready to go in the high school,

1120. I was at Raines Heights Baptist

1121. Church and in comparison to

1122. this building, I was on the

1123. next to the last row, about two

1124. or three people over on that

1125. next to the last row, sitting

1126. in the back, my right arm around

1127. the young lady, just trying to be

  1128. cool.

1129. And somebody had said to me,

1130. about two weeks earlier in a

1131. locker room, he went on to become

  1132. a pastor.

1133. He said, if you were to die today,

1134. if we were to die today, I

1135. actually said, do you think we'd go

  1136. to heaven?

1137. We both had grown up in that

1138. church or were going to that

  1139. church.

1140. And I turned to him and I said,

1141. Bruce, no way in the world I would.

  1142. I know I'm going to hell.

1143. Because I'm not right with God.

  1144. I know I'm not.

1145. And I'm sitting on that next to the

1146. last pew and the pastors preached the

  1147. message.

1148. And at some point, the Holy Spirit got a

  1149. hold of my heart.

  1150. And he convicted me.

1151. He showed me just how messed up I was.

1152. And boy, I was pretty messed up with

  1153. somebody that age.

1154. I was just running from God.

  1155. Just crazy.

1156. And I got up out of that pew, left that

1157. young lady and came down that aisle and

1158. came right here to the front where the

  1159. pastor was.

1160. And I said, pastor, I need to be saved.

  1161. I was already a member.

1162. The church had been baptized.

1163. He says, Frankie boy, that's what they

  1164. call me.

1165. Frankie boy, you don't need to be saved.

1166. You just need to rededicate your life.

1167. And thank God I had enough sense to know

1168. he was wrong and I was right.

1169. And I went over and I kneeled about where

  1170. that would be.

1171. And I just talked to God.

  1172. I didn't know how to talk.

1173. I just talked to God.

1174. And I said, God, I desperately need you to

1175. show me mercy and grace.

1176. I believe you died for me.

1177. And I'm asking you to forgive my sins.

1178. And right there in the moment, he forget it

1179. was the greatest moment of my life.

1180. It changed everything about my life from

1181. then to this very moment in time.

  1182. It changed everything.

1183. I am so glad that God loved this sinner like

  1184. me.

1185. And Jonah should have been so glad that God

1186. loved this sinner like him.

1187. And that he loved his Hebrew ancestors,

  1188. predecessors.

1189. The gospel is good for everybody.

  1190. Amen?

  1191. It'll save everybody.

1192. And it's good for you today.

1193. If you're here in this room and you've never

1194. received Christ, you may say, you know what?

  1195. I just don't get Christians.

1196. I just don't understand why they live,

  1197. the way they live.

1198. I just keep messing up.

1199. And I just make a mess of my life.

1200. I'm going to tell you something.

1201. You need God in your life.

1202. You need what those Ninevites needed.

1203. You need what I needed.

1204. You need the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart.

  1205. And God loves you.

1206. And that's why he gave us this book, to let you know how

  1207. much he loves you.

1208. Would you come to him today?

1209. Would you trust him today?

  1210. If you're here, maybe you're already a believer, but you're

1211. just out there, man, as long as everything's good in my world,

  1212. I'm good.

1213. Would you allow God to break your heart?

1214. Would you allow him to give you a compassion for lost people

1215. that maybe right now you just don't have, but you'd like to

  1216. have that?

1217. Would you leave your seat this morning and consider coming here

1218. and kneeling at the altar and doing business with God?

1219. You don't need to talk to me necessarily.

1220. You just need to do what I do, come talk to God and say, God,

1221. here's what I need to get right in my life.

1222. We're going to stand and the instrument is going to play.

1223. And I'm wondering if the spirit of God is dealing with you and if

1224. he is, would you come?

1225. As we sing or as we're not going to sing, but as they play, you

  1226. come.

  1227. Let's stand.

  1228. Let's stand.

  1229. Let's play.

  1230. Let's stand.

  1231. Let's stand.

  1232. Let's stand.
