  1. This morning, if you have your Bible,

  2. turn with me to the book of Daniel, chapter three,

  3. and we're gonna look at a few verses,

  4. beginning in verse 13,

  5. we're gonna read verses 13 to 18,

  6. and then we're gonna focus just on three verses,

  7. verses 16, 17, and 18, in just a few moments.

  8. And I wanna preach, as the theme of the morning is today,

  9. this entire day, about committed, being committed.

  10. I hope you recognize, I'm sure you do,

  11. there is a big, big difference

  12. in saying that you're committed to something,

  13. we call that profession,

  14. and actually being committed to something, right?

  15. There's a huge difference in what I say sometimes

  16. and what we sometimes see acted out in life.

  17. I can't tell you how many times as a pastor

  18. I've stood at a wedding altar

  19. and gone through vows with folk

  20. and heard them, sometimes they request

  21. to do their own vows,

  22. and they read these lofty statements

  23. or have them memorized

  24. about how they're gonna be soulmates forever,

  25. and they're gonna always share everything,

  26. and they're gonna be trustworthy.

  27. And of course, the traditional vows,

  28. you know how that goes,

  29. about in sickness and in death,

  30. in joy and in sorrow,

  31. and prosperity and adversity.

  32. And we make these promises and say,

  33. man, you are the one for life.

  34. And believe it or not,

  35. I've seen some of those contracts ended

  36. literally in seven weeks.

  37. I've seen many of them fall by the wayside

  38. in less than five years.

  39. And sadly, many, many of them,

  40. by the time they reach 10 years or 20 years,

  41. they've just said, you know,

  42. we're gonna have to call it quits,

  43. and we're gonna go our way.

  44. And I don't mean this to put guilt

  45. on anyone here who might be in this category.

  46. I don't say it for that reason.

  47. But I've even seen folk at times

  48. make that commitment not once,

  49. but twice and three and four,

  50. and as many as five times.

  51. I've known folk who've just been married

  52. innumerable times,

  53. and they make that same promise.

  54. And sometimes the ending of those marriages

  55. really and truly wasn't their fault.

  56. But it's pretty obvious

  57. that we don't take seriously sometimes

  58. the commitment that we make with our mouths.

  59. Isn't that right?

  60. Those of you who are football fans

  61. know that every year,

  62. guys, toward the end of the school year,

  63. they begin to make commitments to universities,

  64. to Clemson, to Furman,

  65. to South Carolina or Alabama or whatever school.

  66. And then once the season gets underway

  67. or is about to get underway,

  68. they're about to go to college,

  69. they seemingly have a change of mind and heart,

  70. and they break those commitments

  71. and end up playing somewhere else.

  72. Or they go that first year,

  73. and they discover they're not gonna be

  74. on the field that first season,

  75. and so they back away,

  76. and they sign with another school

  77. after they have met the requirement,

  78. the NCAA.

  79. They recommit to another school.

  80. And of course,

  81. we've seen it in church as well, right?

  82. When I first started pastoring back in 1977,

  83. if you were someone who was committed to the church,

  84. you know the word we used then?

  85. We don't hear much about this word anymore.

  86. We called it faithful.

  87. We would say,

  88. that person is a faithful church member.

  89. And of course,

  90. there was a slogan that went along with that,

  91. and most of you in here who are my age

  92. or a little bit younger even,

  93. you know that expression.

  94. We used to say about those people,

  95. they're here when?

  96. Every time the doors are open, right?

  97. That's what it required to be faithful.

  98. You were there Sunday morning,

  99. and those are the days we had Sunday night

  100. and Wednesday night

  101. and Tuesday or Thursday night visitation,

  102. or they engaged in other ministries of the church,

  103. and we said,

  104. those are the faithful few, right?

  105. Well, about 20 years ago,

  106. I began to recognize that the definition,

  107. practically speaking,

  108. for faithful had changed.

  109. This is long before I left the pastorate

  110. on a full-time basis.

  111. And I began to notice,

  112. and I heard ministers say,

  113. and even heard it from the mouths of members,

  114. that really and truly,

  115. if you showed up once or twice a month,

  116. you could be considered faithful

  117. because you were maintaining

  118. some type of tie with the church, right?

  119. I want to show you a picture this morning.

  120. When you see this picture in scripture,

  121. you're going to go away saying,

  122. man, that is what committed is all about.

  123. There won't be any argument about,

  124. well, these guys were faithful,

  125. and they were committed

  126. in their relationship with God.

  127. Let me set the stage

  128. before I read the passage.

  129. It's the year 586 B.C.

  130. shortly thereafter, okay?

  131. Nebuchadnezzar has marched

  132. into the city of Jerusalem in Judah

  133. for the third and last final time.

  134. Before he's left devastation in his path,

  135. but this time,

  136. he utterly destroys Jerusalem.

  137. The walls that have protected the city,

  138. they're torn down.

  139. They'll stay that way for 70 years.

  140. The scripture tells us

  141. that he killed literally thousands of folk.

  142. He ransacks the temple,

  143. desecrates the temple.

  144. His soldiers go in

  145. and take out the golden and silver vessels.

  146. They spit literally

  147. on the religious life

  148. of the land of Judah.

  149. He leaves nothing behind

  150. but the crippled,

  151. the maimed,

  152. and the elderly.

  153. He takes the brightest

  154. and the best,

  155. and he transports them

  156. from Jerusalem

  157. back to Babylon.

  158. He has plans

  159. for these young men.

  160. He's going to incorporate them

  161. into an administrative program,

  162. teach them Babylonian culture,

  163. and make them productive citizens

  164. of his kingdom.

  165. Among those who were enlisted in that program

  166. are four names you will recognize,

  167. Daniel,

  168. Shadrach,

  169. Meshach,

  170. and Abednego.

  171. Well,

  172. they make it in this program.

  173. They're faring well,

  174. and sometime afterward,

  175. Nebuchadnezzar,

  176. an egomaniac,

  177. by all rights,

  178. comes up with this idea.

  179. He's going to establish

  180. a god of gold,

  181. place it in the plain of Dura,

  182. and at a certain time,

  183. music is going to sound,

  184. and he demands

  185. that all of his subjects

  186. bow down and worship

  187. this god of gold.

  188. Now,

  189. obviously,

  190. he knows

  191. if he's the one

  192. who has had the idea

  193. of this god,

  194. and he's the one

  195. who has commissioned

  196. the building

  197. of this god,

  198. and he is the one

  199. who has issued

  200. the order

  201. that all subjects

  202. bow and worship

  203. this god of gold,

  204. the chunk of gold

  205. in Dura

  206. is not really the god.

  207. Who's the god?

  208. He's the god,

  209. right?

  210. It's all about people

  211. obeying him

  212. and worshiping him

  213. and doing what

  214. he tells them to do.

  215. Well,

  216. the Bible tells us

  217. that there were some

  218. who refused

  219. to bow and worship

  220. this god of gold,

  221. and that's where we pick up

  222. our Bible reading

  223. this morning.

  224. Look with me

  225. to Daniel chapter 3,

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  226. and we're reading

  227. from verse 13

  228. and following.

  229. Then Nebuchadnezzar

  230. in furious rage,

  231. you know why he's furious?

  232. He could not believe

  233. that anybody

  234. would defy him.

  235. Look,

  236. he's the most powerful man

  237. from the human perspective

  238. living on the planet

  239. at this moment in time,

  240. and he well knows that.

  241. He's furious,

  242. enraged,

  243. and commanded

  244. that Shadrach,

  245. Meshach,

  246. and Abednego

  247. be brought.

  248. So they brought

  249. these men

  250. before the king.

  251. Nebuchadnezzar

  252. answered and said

  253. to them,

  254. is it true?

  255. He can't believe it.

  256. Is it true,

  257. O Shadrach,

  258. Meshach,

  259. and Abednego,

  260. that you do not

  261. serve my gods

  262. or worship

  263. the golden image

  264. that I have set up?

  265. Now if you're ready

  266. when you hear

  267. the sound of the horn,

  268. pipe,

  269. lyre,

  270. trigon,

  271. harp,

  272. bagpipe,

  273. and every kind of music

  274. to fall down

  275. and worship

  276. the image

  277. that I have made

  278. well and good.

  279. But if you do not worship,

  280. you shall immediately

  281. be cast

  282. into a burning,

  283. fiery furnace.

  284. Listen to this next statement.

  285. And who is the God

  286. who will deliver you

  287. from my hands?

  288. Now that's arrogance,

  289. isn't it?

  290. And who is the God

  291. that can deliver you

  292. out of my hands?

  293. He's not asking

  294. because he wants information.

  295. That's a rhetorical question

  296. of the highest order.

  297. In his mind,

  298. there's not a God.

  299. You see,

  300. he's already conquered

  301. a lot of neighboring nations.

  302. And those nations had God.

  303. And those people

  304. in those nations

  305. appealed to their God.

  306. But God wasn't able

  307. to help them.

  308. In fact,

  309. the truth is

  310. the people of Judah,

  311. some of them,

  312. no doubt men like these

  313. in the story,

  314. they had appealed to God.

  315. God,

  316. save us.

  317. Don't let this happen.

  318. Let us repent.

  319. We know this is because

  320. of our own wrongdoing.

  321. But God,

  322. spare us somehow.

  323. And so Nebuchadnezzar

  324. is just reminding them,

  325. you prayed once

  326. and God didn't rescue you.

  327. And so if you

  328. are counting on him

  329. to come to your aid now

  330. and rescue you

  331. from this fire,

  332. you had better

  333. think again.

  334. Look at verse 16.

  335. We see the response.

  336. Shadrach, Meshach,

  337. and Abednego

  338. answered and said

  339. to the king,

  340. O Nebuchadnezzar,

  341. we have no need

  342. to answer you

  343. in this matter.

  344. Now look up

  345. and listen for a second.

  346. If you hadn't already

  347. read this story,

  348. would you have ever

  349. anticipated that response?

  350. I mean,

  351. to be honest,

  352. you're looking in the face

  353. of an angry man.

  354. The Bible tells us

  355. in other verses,

  356. the veins in his neck

  357. were protruding,

  358. his face was as red as fire.

  359. He'd ordered

  360. that the furnace

  361. be heated

  362. seven times hotter

  363. than normal

  364. and they could look

  365. in his eyes

  366. until he meant business.

  367. This is a rather

  368. curt response,

  369. wouldn't you say?

  370. To the most powerful man

  371. on the face of the earth,

  372. we have no need

  373. to answer you

  374. in this matter.

  375. Verse 17.

  376. If this be so,

  377. our God

  378. whom we serve

  379. is able to deliver us

  380. from the burning

  381. fiery furnace

  382. and he will deliver us

  383. out of your hand,

  384. O king.

  385. But if not,

  386. be it known to you,

  387. O king,

  388. that we will not

  389. serve your gods

  390. or worship

  391. the golden image

  392. that you

  393. have set up.

  394. Would you bow

  395. with us this morning

  396. in prayer?

  397. Father,

  398. I pray today

  399. that you would give us

  400. an insight

  401. into the commitment

  402. of these three

  403. Hebrew men.

  404. I pray,

  405. Father,

  406. that their fate

  407. this morning

  408. would challenge us

  409. to be more committed

  410. for we make this prayer

  411. in Christ's name

  412. and for his sake

  413. alone.

  414. Amen.

  415. This morning,

  416. I want you to

  417. examine with me

  418. for just a few moments

  419. their response

  420. because there are

  421. three things

  422. about their response

  423. that I think

  424. absolutely indicate

  425. the reality

  426. of their faith

  427. and their commitment

  428. to God.

  429. The first thing

  430. I'd have you to notice

  431. is this.

  432. they acted

  433. instinctively

  434. on their convictions.

  435. Now,

  436. I don't know

  437. if you're somebody

  438. who takes notes

  439. or not,

  440. but if you do,

  441. I want to encourage

  442. you to write that down.

  443. These three points

  444. this morning

  445. are all rather short

  446. and I'd encourage

  447. you to write that down.

  448. Here's how you know

  449. the reality

  450. of their faith

  451. and their level

  452. of commitment.

  453. They acted

  454. instinctively

  455. on their convictions.

  456. You say,

  457. Pastor,

  458. what do you mean?

  459. Their response

  460. in verse 16

  461. is a clear indication.

  462. They were saying

  463. Nebuchadnezzar

  464. to Nebuchadnezzar

  465. the following.

  466. Nebuchadnezzar,

  467. we don't need

  468. to think about this.

  469. We don't need

  470. to pray about this.

  471. We don't need

  472. to go and consult

  473. a rabbi about this.

  474. We don't need

  475. to convene

  476. a Jewish caucus.

  477. We don't need

  478. to consult

  479. with anybody.

  480. We don't need

  481. any time

  482. to rationalize

  483. about our answer.

  484. In fact,

  485. we don't even need

  486. to talk to you

  487. about this

  488. any longer

  489. because it's

  490. a foregoing

  491. conclusion.

  492. One translation

  493. has it this way,

  494. we're not careful

  495. to answer

  496. thee in this matter,

  497. O king.

  498. In other words,

  499. our minds

  500. are made up

  501. and the only way

  502. their minds

  503. can be made up

  504. at this point,

  505. having just been challenged

  506. and recognizing

  507. he means business,

  508. is that they're acting

  509. on instinct

  510. and that instinct

  511. is based

  512. on previous convictions

  513. that they have come

  514. to hold.

  515. I want to tell you

  516. something.

  517. I hope every person

  518. in this room

  519. is living

  520. on the basis

  521. of convictions

  522. that you have

  523. processed

  524. and accepted

  525. into your life

  526. because I want to tell you

  527. something.

  528. If you wait

  529. until you're there

  530. in the face

  531. of trial,

  532. you're likely

  533. to make the wrong

  534. decision.

  535. They said,

  536. we don't need

  537. to think about it,

  538. we don't need

  539. to pray about it.

  540. How many times

  541. have you ever said

  542. when you knew

  543. something was wrong

  544. already?

  545. Well,

  546. let me pray

  547. about that.

  548. It's a way

  549. of buying time,

  550. right?

  551. But they don't need

  552. to pray about it.

  553. You know why?

  554. Because from the time

  555. they were little bitty

  556. boys growing up

  557. in Jerusalem,

  558. their parents

  559. had raised them

  560. on what were known

  561. as the ten words.

  562. I hope you were raised

  563. on the ten words.

  564. For the Jew,

  565. you know what that was?

  566. It was the ten commandments.

  567. From the time

  568. they could walk

  569. and they could talk,

  570. they had been taught

  571. this,

  572. thou shalt worship

  573. the Lord thy God

  574. and him only

  575. shalt thou serve.

  576. Thou shalt worship

  577. no graven images.

  578. They already

  579. had accepted

  580. that as fact

  581. and believed

  582. in their heart

  583. that if they were

  584. to be obedient

  585. to God

  586. that God existed

  587. and if they were

  588. to be obedient

  589. to him

  590. there could be

  591. room for no other

  592. God in their life.

  593. So it was a

  594. foregone conclusion.

  595. You can ask

  596. all you want,

  597. you can threaten

  598. all you want,

  599. but our minds

  600. are made up.

  601. We know how we feel.

  602. We know what we believe.

  603. We believe

  604. in the single God

  605. Jehovah Yahweh

  606. and we're going

  607. to worship

  608. he and he alone.

  609. Isn't it amazing

  610. at times

  611. how we know

  612. the right thing

  613. to do

  614. but we have

  615. trouble doing it?

  616. I was asked

  617. to be on a panel

  618. years and years ago

  619. at Anderson University

  620. and it was a panel

  621. of preachers

  622. and professors

  623. and students

  624. and the question

  625. was how do we

  626. determine the will

  627. of God

  628. and when my time

  629. came to speak

  630. I remember clearly

  631. as though it were

  632. yesterday what I said.

  633. I said you know

  634. what I found in my life

  635. it's not too hard

  636. to know what God

  637. wants me to do

  638. the problem is

  639. in doing it.

  640. Isn't that true?

  641. About 99%

  642. of everything

  643. I'll ever encounter

  644. in life

  645. God has already

  646. told me in his word

  647. he's given me

  648. precepts

  649. and laws

  650. and commandments

  651. that hey

  652. here's how you act

  653. here's what you do

  654. I don't have to think

  655. about murdering somebody

  656. because I already know

  657. it's wrong

  658. I don't have to think

  659. about stealing

  660. I don't have to think

  661. about committing adultery

  662. I don't have to think

  663. about slandering

  664. or coveting my neighbor

  665. because already

  666. the scripture

  667. has given me

  668. conviction on which

  669. I'm able to build

  670. my life.

  671. You know what

  672. I'm surprised

  673. I'm a little surprised

  674. that if these men

  675. had been Baptists

  676. like so many of us

  677. they might have said

  678. well you know what

  679. give us two days

  680. to get back with you

  681. on this.

  682. I mean

  683. they'd have felt

  684. the heat of that furnace

  685. and they'd said

  686. well you know what

  687. maybe we should

  688. rethink this

  689. a little bit.

  690. I mean

  691. you're gracious

  692. you've given us

  693. a chance to

  694. comply with your orders

  695. maybe that's God

  696. opening a door.

  697. Have you ever

  698. seen us do that

  699. kind of thing?

  700. Where we know

  701. clearly what we ought to do

  702. and clearly what is

  703. out of bounds

  704. and what is in bounds

  705. but we want to

  706. think about it

  707. and we want to

  708. pray about it

  709. and we want to

  710. find a rationale

  711. that we can somehow

  712. dress up spiritually

  713. and come away saying

  714. well maybe this is

  715. the will of God

  716. for my life.

  717. In fact

  718. I know some folk

  719. who probably would

  720. have reasoned like this

  721. well you know what

  722. that idol of gold

  723. is just gold

  724. and it's not really

  725. God

  726. none of us really

  727. believe it's God

  728. and I can bow

  729. and I can bow

  730. I can ask

  731. we ask to the

  732. most powerful

  733. men in the world

  734. in terms of what

  735. he asked me to do

  736. but I don't have

  737. to really worship

  738. I mean I can just

  739. look at the God

  740. and I can bow

  741. and I can pretend

  742. to worship

  743. but I don't have

  744. to worship in my heart

  745. and so I really

  746. won't be worshiping

  747. God

  748. if I do what

  749. he asked me to do

  750. or they might have

  751. said well

  752. you know what

  753. God wants me

  754. to bring him glory

  755. in fact

  756. Isaiah had

  757. already said that

  758. that our purpose

  759. in life is to

  760. bring God glory

  761. and so he might

  762. have said well

  763. you know what

  764. God wants us

  765. to bring him glory

  766. and all my life

  767. I've lived to bring

  768. him glory

  769. but if I die

  770. I can't bring him

  771. glory

  772. so maybe

  773. God doesn't want

  774. me to die

  775. he wants me to live

  776. and go on

  777. bringing him glory

  778. right

  779. they'd have found

  780. perhaps a convenient

  781. way to do

  782. absolutely the right

  783. thing

  784. so it all

  785. boils down to

  786. this

  787. if we're to

  788. make right

  789. decisions in life

  790. we've got to

  791. have right

  792. convictions

  793. let me hastily

  794. ask you this

  795. what are your

  796. convictions about

  797. God

  798. you have any

  799. convictions about

  800. God

  801. are there things

  802. in your life

  803. that you believe

  804. about God

  805. and it doesn't

  806. matter what

  807. comes your way

  808. I'm not going

  809. to change those

  810. ideas because

  811. these are

  812. convictions that

  813. are founded upon

  814. truth that I've

  815. read and studied

  816. and been taught

  817. in the word of God

  818. and nothing is

  819. ever going to

  820. change that

  821. what are your

  822. convictions about

  823. God

  824. what are your

  825. convictions about

  826. marriage

  827. I mean

  828. every person here

  829. I'm telling you

  830. you better have

  831. some convictions

  832. about marriage

  833. that you can act

  834. on instinctively

  835. because I'm going

  836. to tell you something

  837. temptation in that

  838. realm of life

  839. will sneak up on

  840. you

  841. it'll come out

  842. of nowhere

  843. and if you

  844. don't already

  845. know what

  846. you believe

  847. and what

  848. you're committed

  849. to

  850. and have

  851. conviction about

  852. that

  853. you're going

  854. to fall prey

  855. to an adulterous

  856. relationship

  857. somewhere out

  858. there in the

  859. future

  860. what are your

  861. convictions about

  862. church

  863. do you have

  864. any convictions

  865. about church

  866. when you came

  867. here and you

  868. said I want to

  869. be a member

  870. at First Baptist

  871. Church

  872. if you've come

  873. in the last

  874. 25 years

  875. I know that

  876. Fred Stone

  877. would have looked

  878. at you and said

  879. have you got a

  880. relationship with

  881. the Lord Jesus

  882. Christ

  883. have you

  884. repented of

  885. your sin

  886. and trusted

  887. him as your

  888. savior

  889. and are you

  890. going to live

  891. for him

  892. and they may

  893. have asked

  894. you to sign

  895. the church

  896. covenant

  897. there's an

  898. understanding

  899. with most

  900. churches

  901. and I would

  902. take it here

  903. at First

  904. Baptist

  905. that if you

  906. come here

  907. you're not

  908. going to just

  909. have your name

  910. on the roll

  911. of the church

  912. that you're

  913. going to be

  914. actively involved

  915. that you're

  916. going to gather

  917. regularly for

  918. worship

  919. that you're

  920. going to be

  921. faithful in your

  922. tithes and

  923. offerings

  924. that you're

  925. going to use

  926. your gifts

  927. to the glory

  928. of God

  929. that this church

  930. might accomplish

  931. its mission

  932. what are your

  933. convictions about

  934. the church

  935. are you committed

  936. to the church

  937. so the first

  938. thing I'd have

  939. you notice is

  940. they acted

  941. instinctively

  942. on their

  943. convictions

  944. but there's a

  945. second thing

  946. I want you to

  947. notice

  948. they had a

  949. high view

  950. of God

  951. as being both

  952. able and

  953. active

  954. and both

  955. those words

  956. are important

  957. they had a

  958. very high

  959. view of

  960. God

  961. our God

  962. is able

  963. and our

  964. God

  965. is active

  966. listen to

  967. what they

  968. said in

  969. verse 17

  970. our God

  971. whom we

  972. serve

  973. is able

  974. to

  975. deliver us

  976. he is

  977. able

  978. to

  979. deliver us

  980. able

  981. indicates

  982. he is

  983. able

  984. to

  985. deliver us

  986. indicates

  987. he is

  988. active

  989. he is

  990. both

  991. able

  992. and

  993. he is

  994. active

  995. he is

  996. willing

  997. to

  998. intercede

  999. in our

  1000. behalf

  1001. I'm going

  1002. to tell you

  1003. something you

  1004. may not

  1005. agree with

  1006. this morning

  1007. but I

  1008. believe with

  1009. all my

  1010. heart I'm

  1011. right

  1012. in the

  1013. church

  1014. in this

  1015. day in

  1016. which we're

  1017. living in

  1018. the United

  1019. States

  1020. at any

  1021. rate

  1022. we are

  1023. suffering

  1024. from a

  1025. crisis

  1026. of faith

  1027. now I

  1028. don't want

  1029. to insult

  1030. anyone here

  1031. but I

  1032. want to be

  1033. straight with

  1034. you today

  1035. we're not

  1036. certain anymore

  1037. not in what

  1038. we say

  1039. but in how

  1040. we practice

  1041. our faith

  1042. what we

  1043. really do

  1044. believe about

  1045. God

  1046. there was a

  1047. time when I

  1048. was a boy

  1049. I want to

  1050. tell you I

  1051. would go to

  1052. prayer meetings

  1053. cottage prayer

  1054. meetings the

  1055. church prayer

  1056. meeting at

  1057. my church

  1058. and I

  1059. would hear

  1060. the leaders

  1061. of our

  1062. church and

  1063. the men and

  1064. women of our

  1065. church pray

  1066. and I want to

  1067. tell you

  1068. something I

  1069. had a clear

  1070. understanding when

  1071. I listened to

  1072. them pray as

  1073. a little

  1074. boy those

  1075. people believe

  1076. that God

  1077. can and will

  1078. answer they

  1079. had a belief

  1080. that God was

  1081. able to do

  1082. anything and so

  1083. they asked him

  1084. to do anything

  1085. nothing was

  1086. off limits

  1087. and when I

  1088. look at the

  1089. heroes of faith

  1090. in the scripture

  1091. those men of

  1092. God in the

  1093. scripture in the

  1094. biblical era

  1095. that's what they

  1096. believed about

  1097. God they

  1098. believed the

  1099. exact same

  1100. thing about

  1101. God that

  1102. Shadrach

  1103. Meshach

  1104. and Abednego

  1105. believed about

  1106. God our

  1107. God is

  1108. able David

  1109. a teenage boy

  1110. didn't go out

  1111. to face a

  1112. nine foot

  1113. giant not

  1114. believing God

  1115. is able

  1116. Daniel one

  1117. of these

  1118. men's friends

  1119. and cohorts

  1120. did not allow

  1121. himself to be

  1122. thrown into a

  1123. den of lions not

  1124. believing God

  1125. is able

  1126. Moses didn't

  1127. lead hundreds

  1128. of thousands

  1129. thousands of

  1130. men and

  1131. their families

  1132. out of

  1133. captivity in

  1134. Egypt without

  1135. believing our

  1136. God is able to

  1137. do anything

  1138. but I've got to

  1139. tell you today

  1140. in the church

  1141. whether we want to

  1142. admit it or not

  1143. we have a crisis

  1144. of faith

  1145. we're not exactly

  1146. sure any longer

  1147. that God is

  1148. really able

  1149. if you don't

  1150. believe it

  1151. listen to us

  1152. pray

  1153. what are you

  1154. asking for

  1155. we hardly ask

  1156. him with faith

  1157. and persistence

  1158. to do the

  1159. impossible

  1160. right

  1161. we want to

  1162. make sure that

  1163. we frame our

  1164. prayers somewhere

  1165. there in the

  1166. realm where

  1167. well that's

  1168. probably doable

  1169. for God

  1170. we pray

  1171. anemic prayers

  1172. we pray

  1173. what the

  1174. biblical writers

  1175. would consider

  1176. namby pamby

  1177. prayers

  1178. ask God

  1179. nothing

  1180. kind of prayers

  1181. you see it in

  1182. how we deal

  1183. with problems

  1184. when someone

  1185. in the church

  1186. today is going

  1187. through a struggle

  1188. in their marriage

  1189. what do we do

  1190. we want to rush

1191. to get them to a

  1192. marriage counselor

  1193. we want to rush

  1194. to get a book

  1195. in their hand

  1196. we want to attend

  1197. a seminar

  1198. if you hear me

  1199. saying those

  1200. things are bad

  1201. you're hearing me

  1202. wrong

  1203. what I'm telling

  1204. you is this

  1205. there was a time

  1206. when we knew

  1207. our kids

  1208. or our grandkids

  1209. or people

  1210. in our circle

  1211. of friends

  1212. was in trouble

  1213. you know what

  1214. we'd do

  1215. we'd fall on our

  1216. face and we'd say

  1217. God save them

  1218. God save their

  1219. marriage

  1220. God save our

  1221. country

  1222. God save our

  1223. boys on the

  1224. battlefield

  1225. God do this

  1226. God do that

  1227. we weren't afraid

  1228. to ask him

  1229. because we had

  1230. confidence

  1231. our God

  1232. is able

  1233. I'm going to

  1234. tell you something

  1235. today

  1236. if you could

  1237. come to

  1238. recapture that

  1239. spirit and

  1240. mentality in your

  1241. mind and heart

  1242. and come to a

  1243. place that you

  1244. believe that God

  1245. is able

  1246. it would

  1247. absolutely

  1248. revolutionize

  1249. your spiritual

  1250. life

  1251. and your

  1252. church's

  1253. life

  1254. amen

  1255. if we could

  1256. just come to

  1257. see our

  1258. God is

  1259. able

  1260. not only that

  1261. our God is

  1262. able but our

  1263. God is

  1264. active

  1265. he not only

  1266. can do it

  1267. many of us

  1268. today still

  1269. think he

  1270. can do it

  1271. maybe

  1272. intellectually

  1273. but you know

  1274. what we also

  1275. think if we're

  1276. honest

  1277. that he's

  1278. probably off

  1279. hiding in the

  1280. shadows and

  1281. the wings

  1282. there are

  1283. a ton of

  1284. Christians

  1285. today who

  1286. have this

  1287. kind of

  1288. mentality

  1289. God did

  1290. some mighty

  1291. things to

  1292. begin with

  1293. he created

  1294. and framed

  1295. the universe

  1296. he put it

  1297. all in

  1298. motion

  1299. and then

  1300. guess what

  1301. he did

  1302. after the

  1303. Bible had

  1304. been written

  1305. he just

  1306. kind of

  1307. meandered

  1308. off to the

  1309. sidelines

  1310. and he's

  1311. over here

  1312. and he's

  1313. hiding in the

  1314. shadows and

  1315. the wings

  1316. and he's

  1317. started the

  1318. ball rolling

  1319. but now it's

  1320. just kind of

  1321. left up to

  1322. us

  1323. and we're

  1324. kind of

  1325. on our

  1326. own

  1327. and we're

  1328. doing our

  1329. thing

  1330. and maybe

  1331. every blue

  1332. moon

  1333. he will

  1334. intervene

  1335. into our

  1336. lives

  1337. can I tell

  1338. you

  1339. that's not

  1340. how the

  1341. men of

  1342. scripture

  1343. thought and

  1344. believed

  1345. that's not

  1346. the God

  1347. they were

  1348. committed to

  1349. and that's

  1350. the reason

  1351. Elijah in

  1352. first Kings

  1353. 18 is not

  1354. afraid to

  1355. look up into

  1356. the heavens

  1357. and call

  1358. down fire

  1359. from God

  1360. that's the

  1361. reason he's

  1362. not afraid

  1363. to say

  1364. God

  1365. I'm begging

  1366. you to

  1367. show these

  1368. people once

  1369. and for all

  1370. who you

  1371. are and

  1372. do it by

  1373. sending down

  1374. fire

  1375. he believed

  1376. that God

  1377. who we should

  1378. serve is one

  1379. who is able

  1380. and active

  1381. in intervening

  1382. in our

  1383. lives on a

  1384. daily basis

  1385. do you believe

  1386. that

  1387. thirdly

  1388. they were

  1389. fully committed

  1390. to God

  1391. as Dabo

  1392. Sweeney likes

  1393. to say

  1394. they're all

  1395. in

  1396. look at

  1397. verse

  1398. 18

  1399. but if

  1400. not

  1401. be it

  1402. known to

  1403. you

  1404. O king

  1405. that we

  1406. will not

  1407. serve

  1408. your gods

  1409. or worship

  1410. the golden

  1411. image that

  1412. you have

  1413. set up

  1414. but if

  1415. not

  1416. now

  1417. look up

  1418. and listen

  1419. you know

  1420. what some

  1421. of you are

  1422. probably

  1423. thinking

  1424. right now

  1425. if you're

  1426. skeptical

  1427. and you're

  1428. reading the

  1429. way I

  1430. often am

  1431. you're probably

  1432. thinking

  1433. their faith

  1434. wavered a little

  1435. bit there

  1436. didn't it

  1437. but if

  1438. not

  1439. in other

  1440. words

  1441. maybe he's

  1442. not able

  1443. to deliver

  1444. no

  1445. their faith

  1446. didn't

  1447. waver

  1448. what they're

  1449. expressing

  1450. here

  1451. is an

  1452. understanding

  1453. of how

  1454. God moves

  1455. and works

  1456. and has

  1457. worked

  1458. and will

  1459. continue to

  1460. work in

  1461. our world

  1462. it is an

  1463. expression of

  1464. their confidence

  1465. in the

  1466. sovereignty

  1467. of God

  1468. their faith

  1469. is not

  1470. wavering

  1471. when they

  1472. say but

  1473. if not

  1474. in other

  1475. words if

  1476. he doesn't

  1477. deliver us

  1478. what they're

  1479. saying is

  1480. this

  1481. that we

  1482. have looked

  1483. at human

  1484. history and

  1485. understand that

  1486. God is

  1487. sovereign we

  1488. don't call the

  1489. shots he

  1490. does and

  1491. God is free

  1492. to do whatever

  1493. God desires

  1494. to do and

  1495. it may be that

  1496. he desires to

  1497. save us to

  1498. prove to you

  1499. he is God

  1500. and if so

  1501. to God be

  1502. glory and we

  1503. praise him

  1504. but it may

  1505. just be that

  1506. God in his

  1507. sovereign wisdom

  1508. will recognize

  1509. it would be

  1510. better for us

  1511. to perish in

  1512. the fire as

  1513. a proof of

  1514. the reality of

  1515. our faith and

  1516. he will not

  1517. rescue us but

  1518. know this whether

  1519. he rescues us or

  1520. he doesn't rescue

  1521. us we are

  1522. committed to

  1523. serving him

  1524. and him

  1525. alone I

  1526. want you to

  1527. understand something

  1528. friend every time

  1529. we pray God

  1530. does not answer

  1531. the way we

  1532. desire that he

  1533. would answer or

  1534. hope perhaps that

  1535. he would answer

  1536. I want to show

  1537. you a passage and

  1538. I'm going to ask

  1539. you to turn to

  1540. this passage if

  1541. you have a

  1542. Bible you have

  1543. a device that

  1544. you can look a

  1545. passage up I

  1546. want you to read

  1547. this because I'm

  1548. almost through the

  1549. message look with

  1550. me to Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1551. chapter 11 it's

  1552. one of my favorite

  1553. passages in all the

1554. word of God and I

  1555. don't care who you

  1556. are here today if

  1557. you're a member a

  1558. visitor you want to

  1559. read this passage on

  1560. your own look with

  1561. me to Hebrews 11

  1562. 35 to 38 would

1563. you find that if you

  1564. have a Bible or a

  1565. device Hebrews 11

  1566. 35 to 38 now

  1567. while you're

  1568. turning it up let

  1569. me set the stage

  1570. how many of you

  1571. know Hebrews 11

  1572. well you've read a

  1573. lot of times raise

  1574. your hand real high

  1575. if you're familiar

1576. with this a lot of

  1577. you in the

  1578. sermon that's what I

  1579. suspected some

  1580. people call it God's

  1581. hall of fame some

  1582. people call it God's

  1583. who's who some

  1584. have called it the

  1585. roll call of faith

  1586. because what he does

  1587. here is my favorite

  1588. verse is verse 6

  1589. where he says

  1590. without faith it is

  1591. impossible to please

  1592. him because those

  1593. who come to him

  1594. must believe that he

1595. exists and he is the

  1596. reward of those who

  1597. diligently seek him

  1598. it's a list of all the

  1599. great people in the

  1600. scripture of faith and

  1601. people that God has

  1602. rescued but wait a

  1603. second we overlook

  1604. these closing verses

1605. I want you to look

1606. with me to verse 35

  1607. the middle of the

1608. verse and I want to

  1609. read it for you

  1610. some were tortured

  1611. refusing to accept

  1612. release so that they

1613. might rise again to a

  1614. better life others

  1615. suffered mocking and

  1616. flogging and even

  1617. chains and imprisonment

  1618. they were stoned let

  1619. that sink in they

1620. were sawn in two they

  1621. were killed with the

  1622. sword they went about

1623. in skins of sheep and

  1624. goats destitute afflicted

  1625. and mistreated of whom

1626. the world was not worthy

  1627. wandering about in

  1628. deserts and mountains

1629. and in dens and caves

1630. of the earth you know

1631. what it says look up and

  1632. get this not everybody

1633. who walked with God was

1634. faithful to God God chose

1635. to rescue well some of

1636. them were sawn in two

1637. they were boiled in oil

  1638. they were crucified

  1639. upside down they were

  1640. stoned to death they

1641. were run through with a

  1642. sword they were beheaded

1643. many of them escaped to

1644. live lives that we would

  1645. deem miserable living in

  1646. caves among dead people

1647. they wandered and then the

  1648. writer of Hebrews says

1649. the world was not worthy of

  1650. faithful soldiers of the

1651. cross who gave their life

1652. to the Lord Jesus men and

1653. women of deep deep deep

  1654. conviction and that's what

  1655. Shadrach Meshach and

  1656. Abednego were saying we

  1657. don't know if he's going to

1658. rescue us or not we don't

1659. have question number one about

1660. his ability or that he could

1661. we just don't know his

1662. sovereign will so if we die

1663. we die if we live to God be

  1664. the glory that's a picture of

  1665. what commitment looks like

1666. right I pastored full time for

  1667. 40 years 40 years I was on

1668. staff about four years prior to

1669. that I've been doing interims

1670. now four years so you do the

1671. quick math about 48 to 50 years

  1672. I've been involved in ministry I

1673. can tell you without hesitation

1674. today what has discouraged me

1675. more than anything else in

1676. ministry it is not adversity

1677. from the enemy and it is not

1678. adversity from within I was

1679. fortunate I was always in

  1680. situations where people loved

1681. me and cared for me and

1682. supported me so it wasn't that

  1683. that's what you're thinking you

1684. know what it was you was seeing

1685. people who one day were on fire

1686. for God and six months later you

  1687. couldn't have found them with a

1688. seeing eye dog I mean people who

1689. would just be so on fire and then so

1690. cold so apathetic people who drifted

1691. in church and out of church and to

1692. another church and another church and

1693. another church and another church

1694. people who were giving great

1695. testimonies of praises one day until

1696. tragedy struck or they lost their job or

1697. child went wayward or something

  1698. happened or somebody disappointed

1699. them and then they just drifted away

1700. drifted away that was the most

1701. heartbreaking thing I dealt with the

1702. last 50 years of my life just trying to

1703. get my head around it when I was in

  1704. Statesville the year was 1978 or 9 I'd

1705. been at Western Avenue about two years

1706. there was a man and his wife in our

1707. congregation by the name of Bob Byrd

1708. his wife Shirley they had a 19 year old

1709. boy who was in the service he came home

1710. on leave they lived on Lake Norman he's

1711. in a boat by himself and they're going

1712. across Lake Norman and he's turned to

1713. the left watching skiers in an adjacent

1714. boat sadly he didn't notice a concrete

1715. embankment came out into the water and

1716. he hit it going really fast and the boat

1717. just disintegrated they fished his body

1718. out of the water called EMS rushed him to

1719. Charlotte Memorial Hospital I got a call

1720. early that evening went to their side we

1721. just prayed till about 2 in the morning

1722. God please save Mark about 2 in the morning

1723. Bob turns to me in faithful Christian says

1724. Ralph you just need to go home you got to

1725. preach in the morning your hour from home

1726. go home I got my car went back home

1727. broken-hearted for my friend next day

1728. after I preached I went back to Charlotte

1729. by then he had begun to stabilize a little

1730. bit they thought well we think he's going

1731. to pull through we're not certain next 48

1732. hours will be crucial 48 hours later they

1733. said well he has stabilized but he's in a

1734. deep deep coma and frankly we don't know

1735. if he'll ever come out of it we can't keep

1736. him here at Memorial though because his

1737. life his bodily injuries are not threatening

1738. at this point so they moved him to a

1739. convalescent home in Huntersville North

1740. Carolina Bob worked in Charlotte at a

1741. architectural firm and every day he would

1742. pass close by Huntersville get off the

1743. interstate go to Huntersville see his son

1744. going to work his wife Shirley would go

1745. around noontime she would stay with him

1746. several hours she would read to him hold

1747. his hand and just talk to her son try to

1748. get him to wake up it's now been 18 months

1749. one Wednesday night at the prayer meeting I

1750. see them and I say could you come by the

1751. office for a minute we go by my office I

1752. sit down in a couch and they sit down and

1753. couch and chair beside me and I just said

  1754. how's it going I hadn't had a chance to

1755. just talk with you privately for a while

1756. how's it going how you dealing with Mark's

1757. injury and I'll never forget that

1758. conversation over 40 years ago he just

1759. began to just cry uncontrollably he looks

1760. up and he says pastor it's the hardest

1761. thing we've ever gone through said mostly

1762. it's killing me how it's killing his mama he

1763. said and this is what we're praying we've

1764. begged God we've told God God if you would

1765. let Mark wake up if you'd let me just even

1766. if he doesn't stay alert if he could just

1767. wake up one more time he could look at his

1768. mother and tell her he loved her that he

1769. hurt her and and just give her some reason

1770. to hope we've told God God we will love you

1771. and praise you and serve you until the day

1772. we die and then he just dropped his face in his

1773. hands and he wept after about 45 seconds he

1774. looked back up wiped the tears away and this is

1775. what he said I'll never forget it and we've also

1776. told God God if he never wakes up if he never says

1777. another word if he dies tomorrow if he lives 10 years we

1778. promise we're gonna love you and serve you forever

1779. another 18 months passed and three years after that

1780. accident Mark Byrd went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ he

1781. never woke up he never spoke a word but his two parents honored

1782. that commitment and they've been faithful to their Lord ever

1783. since that day they never wavered in their faith they were just

1784. like Shadrach Meshach and Abednego Lord if you'll do this but

1785. if not if not now that's commitment are you committed to God like that are

1786. you committed to your spouse and your family like that are you

1787. committed to the body of believers here at First Baptist Pickens like

1788. that I'm gonna tell you this is a moment of truth for this church

1789. because for 25 years you've had unity and solidarity and you've been united by a

1790. great preacher and a great man but he's left us he's retired and this is a

1791. time where we'll see what you're made of this is a time for you to pull

1792. together more than you've ever needed to pull together in the last 25 years it's

1793. a time for staff people to step it up it's a time for deacons and leadership to

1794. step it up it's a time for Sunday school teachers to step it up it's a time for

1795. everyone who names Christ as their Savior and is a member of this church to say you

1796. know what it's not time for me to loaf it's not time for me to take a walk in

1797. the park it's not time for me to be missing in action it's a time for me to

1798. to be on deck all hands on deck it's a time for me to do my part it's not a time to

1799. observe it's a time to participate it's not a time to watch it's not a time to sit

1800. it's a time to be active I'm gonna tell you something God has gifted you and

1801. blessed you and you owe it to him and to this church to do your very best for

1802. him this morning we're gonna have a song play to him play and during that time I

1803. hope you'll prayerfully consider the commitment that God would have you make

1804. today mostly to him if you'll make the right commitment to him these other

1805. commitments will fall in place amen what would God have you do it may be that you

1806. look at your life and you say well I've gotten slack in my faith man COVID COVID has

1807. given us a mentality that it's okay for us to walk away from church to be away from

1808. church and I understand that there was a need for us at one time there may come a

1809. need in the future for us to say you know what we're gonna worship in a

1810. different fashion but if there was ever a time right now today that we need to be

1811. found faithful in God's house it's this day let's bow together in prayer father

1812. lead us and guide us today to not just put checks on a card but to really think

1813. about what role we can play and how you've gifted us and what we can do for your

1814. kingdom whether it's with a one or with Sunday school or music whether it's to

1815. serve behind the scenes in a helping role God let us be our best for you let us have a

1816. great faith Lord and believe that you're actively involved in our lives Lord I pray

1817. today that we would be as committed to you as Shadrach Meshach and Abednego for we make

1818. this prayer in Jesus name and for his sake amen

  1819. you
