  1. If you have your Bibles, turn them with me this morning,

  2. turn in them with me to Mark chapter five,

  3. and we're going to look at 20 verses,

  4. verses one through 20.

  5. I'm not gonna read them all at once.

  6. I'm gonna read them all before the message is over,

  7. but we're going to just do an exposition of these verses

  8. as we go this morning.

  9. I wanna begin a series today

  10. that I have entitled The Jesus Effect,

  11. A-F-F-E-C-T, the impact that Jesus has on people.

  12. How many of you have ever met somebody in your life

  13. that after that encounter,

  14. you were just never, ever the same?

  15. And I'm not talking about Jesus, the Holy Spirit here,

  16. but can you think of a person in your life?

  17. There may or may not be for you,

  18. but a lot of folk I meet have told me from time to time,

  19. they ran into somebody or they had perhaps a planned meeting,

  20. and that meeting absolutely changed the course of their life.

  21. Some people are just like that,

  22. and it seems that everyone Jesus ever met,

  23. man, they went away different.

  24. He had a tremendous impact on their life,

  25. and so for about 10 Sundays,

  26. we're gonna be looking at the Jesus Effect,

  27. how he impacts people's lives.

  28. This morning, we're looking at the guy who I think

  29. is the scariest guy you'll ever meet in your life,

  30. and you've met some scary folk, right?

  31. In fact, look around the room right now.

  32. I'm sure all of us have, at one time or another,

  33. we've been somewhere where we just kind of wanted

  34. to draw our spouse and our kids a little closer to us

  35. because somebody's acting a little bit,

  36. as a buddy of mine says, cray-cray.

  37. You know what I mean?

  38. I mean, they're just out there.

  39. They're just a little bit different.

  40. They've got a look about them.

  41. There's something about them physically

  42. that you just look at,

  43. and it kind of frightens you, intimidates you,

  44. maybe a real huge person, muscle-bound person,

  45. maybe how they're dressed.

  46. Most often, it's how they're acting, right?

  47. I mean, I remember when I was still working

  48. at Brushy Creek, I would go to the hospital

  49. over at Memorial,

  50. and almost always, you could count on this one guy

  51. I'd pass going down academy,

  52. and he would be talking to himself,

  53. and this was before there were cell phones,

  54. you know, before they had those little buds in their ears,

  55. and he'd be having the grandest conversation,

  56. but there wouldn't be anybody there but him, right?

  57. And so, you know the kind of guy I'm talking about.

  58. Well, that's the kind of guy we see here in Scripture,

  59. so if you have your Bible, open it,

  60. and let's just read these verses together,

  61. beginning in Mark chapter five and verse one and two.

  62. Then they came, speaking of the disciples,

  63. to the other side of the sea.

  64. This is the Sea of Galilee.

  65. If you draw an oblong circle down on the lower right end,

  66. the southeast side,

  67. that's where they're headed to the area known as the Gerizines.

  68. So the Scripture says,

  69. then they came to the other side of the sea,

  70. to the region of the Gerizines.

  71. As soon as he, speaking of Jesus,

  72. got out of the boat,

  73. a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs

  74. and met him.

  75. Now, the only two things we know at this point

  76. about this man we're referring to today

  77. is the scariest man you've ever met

  78. is that he has an unclean spirit,

  79. which means he's demon-possessed.

  80. There are evil spirits living in him,

  81. not just one, but as you'll see,

  82. many, many evil spirits,

  83. and he's coming to meet Jesus,

  84. apparently spots Jesus.

  85. They beach the boat on the shore,

  86. and as they do,

  87. Jesus steps out of the boat.

  88. He sees Jesus.

  89. You're going to see in just a moment.

  90. Knows who Jesus is

  91. and goes running straight for Jesus.

  92. He's coming, though,

  93. out of the tombs.

  94. Now, you've got to ask yourself,

  95. why would anybody

  96. be coming out of the tombs?

  97. Had he just buried a loved one?

  98. Was he there for a funeral?

  99. Why would he be coming out of the tombs?

  100. And when you think of the tombs,

  101. let me just give you a clear picture in your mind.

  102. If you're picturing something like Hillcrest Cemetery

  103. just down the road from you guys,

  104. think again.

  105. I mean, there's no green grass.

  106. There's no markers there.

  107. It's not beautiful.

  108. There are no artificial flowers

  109. or real flowers or anything like that.

  110. This is not a well-kept place.

  111. These are caves there adjacent

  112. to the Sea of Galilee.

  113. This is where people have been buried.

  114. They have been wrapped,

  115. many of them in cloth and placed in there.

  116. Animals have roamed the countryside.

  117. Some of them, no doubt,

  118. have come in and devoured the corpses.

  119. You wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

  120. You would, in fact, anticipate

  121. and expect that when you walk in those caves,

  122. you're going to see an elbow,

  123. you're going to see an arm or a leg,

  124. or you might encounter a skull or bones.

  125. It's a pretty gross setting, right?

  126. And so this man with the unclean spirit

  127. runs out of the tombs

  128. and he runs up to Jesus.

  129. Now you've got to be asking,

  130. as I said earlier,

  131. why is he there?

  132. Well, the next verse tells us,

  133. verse three,

  134. he lived in the tombs.

  135. Now just stop for a moment

  136. and let that sink in.

  137. He lived in the tombs.

  138. Can anyone in this room

  139. rightfully say you can imagine

  140. ever making your home in the tombs?

  141. I talked to a guy a number of years ago,

  142. a friend of mine,

  143. and he lived right next door to a cemetery.

  144. And so I asked him,

  145. in fact, his house backed up to it,

  146. I said,

  147. does it ever bother you

  148. that you live so close to a cemetery?

  149. He says,

  150. no, actually I get along well

  151. with all my neighbors.

  152. You know,

  153. they don't give me any trouble.

  154. But the truth of the matter is,

  155. to live in an environment

  156. like I was talking about a minute ago,

  157. man,

  158. there's got to be something wrong

  159. in your life.

  160. To live in a place like this,

  161. you've got to ask,

  162. why does he do that?

  163. Why does he choose to live there?

  164. Does he choose to live there?

  165. Well,

  166. as you'll see in a moment,

  167. he doesn't.

  168. Look at the remainder of the verse.

  169. He lived in the tombs.

  170. No one was able to restrain him anymore,

  171. even with chains,

  172. because he often had been bound

  173. with shackles and chains,

  174. but had,

  175. and look at this word,

  176. graphic word,

  177. snapped off the chains

  178. and smashed the shackles.

  179. No one was strong enough

  180. to subdue him.

  181. He lives there

  182. because that's where

  183. the public demands

  184. he lives.

  185. In just a moment,

  186. you're going to see

  187. why they do that.

  188. In fact,

  189. probably already

  190. you're getting a good idea

  191. of why they do that.

  192. They're scared to death

  193. of this guy.

  194. I mean,

  195. this is not the kind of guy

  196. you want to encounter

  197. your preschool

  198. or elementary age kids.

  199. It's not the kind of guy

  200. you want your teenagers

  201. to be around.

  202. It's not the kind of guy

  203. you want to be near,

  204. as you're going to see

  205. in just a moment.

  206. He's filled with these

  207. demonic spirits,

  208. and because of that,

  209. he is completely

  210. out of control.

  211. He has,

  212. because of these evil spirits

  213. within him,

  214. supernatural strength.

  215. They can no longer

  216. chain him

  217. in these caves,

  218. in these tombs,

  219. but it's not because

  220. they haven't tried.

  221. They've sent out

  222. committees of men before

  223. who have bound him

  224. to the ground

  225. and have held him down

  226. and shackled him,

  227. but as soon as they would,

  228. apparently,

  229. he would snap

  230. the chains in two.

  231. Now,

  232. when you think about chains,

  233. you don't think about

  234. just snapping them

  235. in two,

  236. right?

  237. I've got a pair

  238. of bolt cutters,

  239. and occasionally,

  240. they'll come in handy,

  241. but boy,

  242. you have to exert

  243. some pressure

  244. even using bolt cutters,

  245. right?

  246. We think about

  247. cutting chains into,

  248. we don't think about

  249. snapping chains.

  250. We think about

  251. snapping a cord,

  252. something like,

  253. but this man

  254. snapped these chains,

  255. he smashed the shackles

  256. to pieces,

  257. they tried again and again,

  258. but now they can

  259. no longer even do that,

  260. and the reason is because

  261. they're not strong enough,

  262. he seems to have

  263. gained strength,

  264. and they're not even

  265. able any longer

  266. to bind him

  267. with the chains,

  268. even momentarily.

  269. Look at verse five,

  270. and always,

  271. now always is

  272. an absolute term,

  273. right?

  274. Always means

  275. always,

  276. all the time,

  277. there's no break in it.

  278. Always,

  279. night and day,

  280. he was crying out

  281. among the tombs,

  282. and in the mountains,

  283. and cutting himself

  284. with stones.

  285. You know,

  286. the only way I know

  287. to describe this man's

  288. existence,

  289. he was tormented,

  290. wasn't he?

  291. I mean,

  292. why else would you

  293. scream out

  294. all the time?

  295. Why would you be heard

  296. screaming up in the mountains,

  297. or screaming there

  298. in the tombs,

  299. and to do that

  300. day and night,

  301. he is absolutely

  302. beside himself,

  303. and the further evidence

  304. of that is this,

  305. he's cutting himself

  306. with stones.

  307. Now,

  308. why would you do that?

  309. You know what I guess?

  310. I think this man

  311. just hates his life.

  312. I mean,

  313. he hates everything

  314. about his existence,

  315. and I can understand,

  316. he is just literally

  317. beside himself.

  318. There may have been

  319. a moment in your life

  320. for a moment or two,

  321. or five minutes,

  322. or an hour,

  323. or a day,

  324. or a week,

  325. where you were just

  326. tormented.

  327. I mean,

  328. thoughts just

  329. overwhelm you.

  330. If you've ever experienced

  331. a great traumatic event

  332. in your life,

  333. you may know

  334. what that's like

  335. for just a moment

  336. or two,

  337. or minutes,

  338. or even hours,

  339. or even days,

  340. but this is this man's

  341. way of life

  342. all the time.

  343. Every day

  344. when he awakens,

  345. it begins.

  346. It ends

  347. when he finally

  348. collapses from exhaustion

  349. in the evening.

  350. He's running

  351. to and fro,

  352. he's out of his mind,

  353. he's crazed,

  354. and he doesn't want

  355. to be bound.

  356. Now imagine this.

  357. Every one of us

  358. in this room

  359. are to some degree

  360. claustrophobic.

  361. Did you know that?

  362. That's yes

  363. and no and no.

  364. Do you know that?

  365. Some of you

  366. are badly claustrophobic.

  367. I won't ask you

  368. to raise your hand,

  369. but you know

  370. who you are.

  371. All of us,

  372. though,

  373. to some degree

  374. in the right circumstance

  375. would find ourselves

  376. claustrophobic.

  377. We put you

  378. in a tiny,

  379. tiny cell

  380. and there's no movement.

  381. Let me tell you something.

  382. You get claustrophobic

  383. pretty quick.

  384. We shackle you

  385. and bind you

  386. and fashion you

  387. to the ground

  388. or to a wall

  389. where you can't move.

  390. You'd get claustrophobic

  391. in a hurry.

  392. Have you ever seen

  393. the movies,

  394. the old pictures,

  395. especially in the

  396. insane asylums?

  397. They would come

  398. into the room.

  399. There would be

  400. two or three orderlies.

  401. Here's the guy

  402. over here

  403. who they're going

  404. to put him

  405. in a straitjacket.

  406. How do those scenes

  407. play out?

  408. You've seen them,

  409. right?

  410. You ever seen

  411. in a movie,

  412. they come in

  413. and say,

  414. we've got to put you

  415. in this

  416. and he says,

  417. okay,

  418. you want to put

  419. my left arm in

  420. or how you want

  421. to do it?

  422. No.

  423. Man,

  424. they would go

  425. screaming

  426. and kicking

  427. and fighting

  428. because none of us

  429. want something

  430. to bind us

  431. and then to put

  432. our arms in that.

  433. In fact,

  434. some of you

  435. are breaking out

  436. in sweat right now

  437. to hear me tell

  438. about this,

  439. right?

  440. I mean,

  441. the thought of that

  442. is just horrific

  443. and that's what

  444. they did.

  445. They bind this man

  446. and try to chain him

  447. and subdue him

  448. so he cannot harm

  449. anyone else.

  450. Now,

  451. one other thing

  452. to keep in mind.

  453. Do you think

  454. they plan to come

  455. daily and give him

  456. water and food

  457. in this cave?

  458. Really?

  459. No.

  460. No.

  461. You know what the plan,

  462. I don't even know

  463. if they thought

  464. it all the way

  465. through.

  466. He's going to die

  467. in that cave.

  468. If he doesn't break

  469. those shackles,

  470. if he doesn't break

  471. out of those chains,

  472. he's going to die there.

  473. They don't care.

  474. They don't want to

  475. just put him to death,

  476. but they're okay

  477. with him not being

  478. a part of their lives.

  479. One other thing,

  480. we go to the next verse,

  481. but Luke chapter 8,

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  482. you know what

  483. it inserts here

  484. that Mark omits?

  485. It says that

  486. when he ran

  487. through these caves

  488. in the mountainside,

  489. he did so

  490. completely naked.

  491. He tore away

  492. his clothes.

  493. Now,

  494. I'm no psychiatrist,

  495. but I've done

  496. a lot of counseling

  497. through the years,

  498. and you know

  499. what my guess is on this?

  500. He couldn't even stand

  501. the sense

  502. of being bound

  503. by his clothes.

  504. He just wanted

  505. to be free.

  506. He thought about

  507. being chained

  508. and being subdued,

  509. and those clothes

  510. were just another

  511. form of that,

  512. and so the man

  513. ran naked.

  514. He was completely

  515. crazed and out

  516. of his mind.

  517. Now,

  518. let's just pause

  519. for about 30 seconds.

  520. Let me ask you something.

  521. Can you imagine

  522. living the life

  523. that this man lived?

  524. Can you imagine

  525. what it was like?

  526. He's cut off

  527. from his family.

  528. He had family

  529. at one time.

  530. He's cut off

  531. from his family.

  532. He,

  533. in all likelihood,

  534. I can just imagine,

  535. had friends

  536. at one time.

  537. He's cut off

  538. from his friends.

  539. He lives

  540. in isolation.

  541. Remember what

  542. isolation did

  543. to some of you

  544. in this room

  545. during COVID?

  546. Pretty tough,

  547. isn't it,

  548. being in the house

  549. by yourself?

  550. We have phones.

  551. We talk to people.

  552. We have computers.

  553. We communicate,

  554. but even then,

  555. it wasn't enough

  556. for a lot of us.

  557. Imagine there's never

  558. anyone that you

  559. have conversation with.

  560. There's no one

  561. to tell how you feel.

  562. Are you beginning

  563. to get a picture

  564. of how horrible

  565. this man's life was?

  566. I've got to be honest,

  567. I can't imagine

  568. a life any worse

  569. than this man

  570. was living.

  571. If he wasn't crazy

  572. when the ordeal began,

  573. he would have been crazy

  574. by the time it was over.

  575. Well,

  576. look at verses

  577. six to ten.

  578. When he saw Jesus

  579. from a distance,

  580. he ran and knelt down

  581. before him,

  582. and he cried out

  583. with a loud voice,

  584. What do you have

  585. to do with me,

  586. Jesus,

  587. Son of the Most High God?

  588. I beg you before God,

  589. don't torment me.

  590. For he had told him,

  591. Come out of the man,

  592. this is Jesus,

  593. you unclean spirit.

  594. What is your name,

  595. he asked.

  596. My name is Legion,

  597. he answered him,

  598. because we are many.

  599. And he kept begging him

  600. not to send them

  601. out of the region.

  602. Now,

  603. this demon,

  604. first thing I want you

  605. to notice,

  606. he recognizes,

  607. as I said

  608. at the outset

  609. of the sermon,

  610. who Jesus is.

  611. You know what's

  612. astounding about that?

  613. All the people

  614. who had apparently

  615. been looking for Jesus

  616. to come,

  617. the Messiah,

  618. the Pharisees,

  619. and all those,

  620. they never recognize him.

  621. But in Mark's gospel,

  622. all the demons

  623. who have conversation

  624. with Jesus

  625. as they possess

  626. individuals,

  627. every one of them

  628. recognize

  629. you're the Son of God.

  630. And they're all

  631. fearful of him

  632. that he has come

  633. to harm them.

  634. They know

  635. that judgment

  636. one day

  637. awaits them.

  638. And so Jesus

  639. asked this man,

  640. what is your name?

  641. He runs up to Jesus,

  642. what is your name?

  643. Now that's not

  644. a hard question,

  645. right?

  646. What is your name?

  647. The man responds,

  648. and it could have

  649. been the demons,

  650. or it could have

  651. been the man,

  652. we don't have

  653. any way of knowing.

  654. The person responds,

  655. Legion.

  656. His parents

  657. had not named him

  658. Legion,

  659. you know that.

  660. When he said Legion,

  661. he says Legion,

  662. I think for two reasons,

  663. one,

  664. because it's indicative

  665. of what's going on

  666. inside of him.

  667. A Legion

  668. was a Roman group

  669. of soldiers

  670. that numbered

  671. between three

  672. and seven thousand

  673. in number.

  674. Is he trying to say

  675. there are three

  676. to seven thousand

  677. demons in me?

  678. I doubt that.

  679. But what he was saying

  680. is this,

  681. I am filled

  682. with an army

  683. of demons.

  684. There could have

  685. been a hundred,

  686. there could have

  687. been a thousand,

  688. there could have

  689. been two thousand,

  690. I don't know how many,

  691. but here's the important

  692. thing,

  693. these demons

  694. have taken possession

  695. of this man's life.

  696. He doesn't have

  697. a life anymore.

  698. They're in complete,

  699. utter control.

  700. I think

  701. if he does know

  702. who he is

  703. and he says Legion,

  704. he says so

  705. because he's lost

  706. all self-identity.

  707. He doesn't think

  708. of himself

  709. as a human being

  710. the way you and I

  711. do any longer.

  712. He thinks of himself

  713. as this man

  714. who is utterly

  715. bound and controlled

  716. not by the shackles

  717. but by the demons

  718. within him.

  719. Now I know what

  720. a lot of you here

  721. got to be wondering

  722. at this point,

  723. preacher,

  724. can that still happen?

  725. Are people

  726. demon-possessed

  727. today?

  728. I've got to say

  729. to you

  730. that I believe

  731. there are a number

  732. of people who are.

  733. In fact,

  734. I don't think

  735. every horrific event

  736. is the result

  737. of demon possession

  738. that occurs

  739. in our lives

  740. but I think

  741. there are a number

  742. of horrific events

  743. that have happened

  744. in human history

  745. that we can look

  746. and say

  747. perhaps that person

  748. was under the influence

  749. of demons.

  750. Some of you

  751. may be wondering,

  752. can a believer

  753. be demon-possessed?

  754. And they cannot

  755. because the Spirit

  756. of God owns us.

  757. We've been bought

  758. with the shed blood

  759. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  760. where he is

  761. and a demon

  762. cannot possess us.

  763. But I want to warn you,

  764. demons

  765. can oppress us.

  766. Demons

  767. can speak to us

  768. and that's why

  769. we need to guard

  770. our minds and hearts.

  771. We need to be careful

  772. about what we see

  773. and what we listen to,

  774. the kind of things

  775. we read,

  776. the kind of experiences

  777. we have in life

  778. because I believe

  779. Satan is on the prowl

  780. and he can,

  781. while not possessing us,

  782. he can oppress us.

  783. He can put satanic thoughts

  784. in our minds

  785. and I think oftentimes

  786. that goes hand in hand

  787. with people

  788. who sometimes

  789. have mental illness,

  790. emotional illness.

  791. Does it mean

  792. they're one and the same?

  793. No, of course not.

  794. But sometimes

  795. that can run

  796. hand in hand.

  797. Look at verse 11,

  798. if you will.

  799. Now a large herd

  800. of pigs

  801. were there,

  802. was there,

  803. feeding on the hillside.

  804. The demons

  805. begged him,

  806. send us to the pigs

  807. so that we may

  808. enter them.

  809. The demons

  810. now speak out

  811. to Jesus.

  812. Jesus,

  813. there's a large group

  814. of pigs over there,

  815. in fact 2,000 in number

  816. we'll see in just a moment.

  817. And they asked

  818. for permission

  819. to be sent

  820. into this herd

  821. of swine.

  822. Verse 13,

  823. and he gave

  824. them permission.

  825. I want you to know this,

  826. Jesus didn't order that,

  827. Jesus permits that.

  828. Then the unclean spirits

  829. came out

  830. and entered the pigs

  831. and the herd

  832. of about 2,000

  833. rushed down the steep bank

  834. into the sea

  835. and drowned there.

  836. Now,

  837. I don't know

  838. if you're here this morning

  839. and that causes you

  840. a problem or not.

  841. I've heard it said

  842. once or twice,

  843. why in the world

  844. did Jesus kill

  845. the 2,000 pigs?

  846. First of all,

  847. I've got to say to you,

  848. he didn't do that,

  849. he didn't order it,

  850. he permitted it.

  851. The demons asked

  852. for permission

  853. and Jesus allowed it.

  854. If you say,

  855. well that's just semantics,

  856. then I've still got to

  857. come back and tell you this,

  858. he did that

  859. in order to save

  860. a human being's life.

  861. And I've just got

  862. to be honest with you,

  863. I'll let you see

  864. a part of my personality

  865. this morning.

  866. If that troubles you,

  867. that Jesus would save

  868. a human being's life

  869. at the expense

  870. of 2,000 swine,

  871. then you and I

  872. are just going to have

  873. to agree to disagree.

  874. Do you understand?

  875. Because I think

  876. the value of a human life

  877. is far above

  878. that of an animal

  879. or a plant

  880. or anything else

  881. that's a living organism.

  882. So,

  883. they run into the pigs,

  884. they run over the cliff

  885. and are drowned.

  886. Look at verse 14.

  887. The men who tended them

  888. ran off

  889. and reported it

  890. in the town.

  891. And the countryside

  892. and the people

  893. went to see

  894. what had happened.

  895. Now,

  896. don't just read that quickly

  897. and pass to the next verse.

  898. I want you to consider that,

  899. what that would look like

  900. for a moment.

  901. How many of you think

  902. a man could live

  903. in Pickens County

  904. who lived the way

  905. this man lived

  906. and you would know about it?

  907. What do you think?

  908. If a man lived

  909. in Pickens County

  910. and was as crazy

  911. as this man was,

  912. ran naked,

  913. screamed night and day,

  914. the townsfolk

  915. had gotten together,

  916. the police had gotten together,

  917. shackled him,

  918. he broke free of the shackles,

  919. he's tormented,

  920. he's running up

  921. and down your streets,

  922. you're scared to death of him,

  923. you'd know about it,

  924. wouldn't you?

  925. You couldn't be a resident

  926. of Pickens

  927. and not know about it.

  928. So these men

  929. who are tending

  930. the swine,

  931. when they see

  932. the swine drown,

  933. a sizable amount

  934. of money

  935. has been lost

  936. by the owner

  937. of these pigs.

  938. They rush back

  939. to tell him

  940. but in telling him,

  941. they begin to spread

  942. word everywhere

  943. and this is probably

  944. what,

  945. hey,

  946. you know that demoniac,

  947. the one we call

  948. the demoniac

  949. of Gadara?

  950. Yeah?

  951. You won't believe

  952. what we just saw.

  953. What'd you just see?

  954. We were there

  955. tending the pigs

  956. and this guy

  957. named Jesus,

  958. they pull up

  959. in this boat,

  960. they beach the boat

  961. and they get out,

  962. he comes running

  963. out of the tombs

  964. and Jesus actually

  965. has a conversation

  966. with him.

  967. Jesus wasn't afraid

  968. of him.

  969. Well,

  970. what happened?

  971. Well,

  972. he told these demons

  973. to leave the man

  974. and they went

  975. into the swine

  976. and the swine

  977. suddenly acted crazy,

  978. did something

  979. we've never seen

  980. him do in the past.

  981. They run over a cliff

  982. and 2,000 of them

  983. died.

  984. Wow.

  985. You gotta go out

  986. and see that thing.

  987. Yeah,

  988. maybe.

  989. Well,

  990. wait a minute,

  991. let me tell you

  992. something else

  993. that happened.

  994. What else happened?

  995. You know the crazy guy?

  996. Yeah?

  997. Well,

  998. he's different.

  999. What do you mean

  1000. he's different?

  1001. Well,

  1002. he's not acting

  1003. crazy anymore.

  1004. He's what?

  1005. He's not acting

  1006. crazy.

  1007. He acts civilized.

  1008. You won't believe it.

  1009. What would you do?

  1010. All the townspeople

  1011. come out to see

  1012. what has happened.

  1013. Well,

  1014. read the next verse.

  1015. This is my second

  1016. favorite verse

  1017. in this passage.

  1018. Not my favorite,

  1019. but my second

  1020. favorite verse.

  1021. Verse 15.

  1022. They came to Jesus

  1023. and saw the man

  1024. who had been demon

  1025. possessed by the legion.

  1026. Now,

  1027. read all this

  1028. very carefully.

  1029. Sitting there,

  1030. dressed,

1031. and in his right mind.

  1032. Is that astounding

  1033. or what?

  1034. Sitting there,

  1035. dressed,

  1036. in his right mind.

  1037. They would never

  1038. have guessed

  1039. any of those things.

  1040. They've always

  1041. seen him naked.

  1042. They've always

  1043. seen him running

  1044. to and fro.

  1045. Have you ever

  1046. known somebody

  1047. who had ants

  1048. in their pants

  1049. and they just

  1050. couldn't sit still?

  1051. They just couldn't

  1052. be still

  1053. if their life

  1054. depended on it?

  1055. That's this guy

  1056. to the hundredth power,

  1057. right?

  1058. I mean,

  1059. he's just crazed

  1060. out of his mind.

  1061. These spirits

  1062. torment him so badly.

  1063. He just can't

  1064. stand his own flesh.

  1065. He cuts his flesh.

  1066. He yells.

  1067. He screams.

  1068. He doesn't wear clothes.

  1069. But now,

1070. take a look at it.

  1071. There he is

  1072. and he's seated

  1073. just like I am

  1074. sitting there

  1075. on the bank

  1076. and he's still

  1077. and he's not screaming

  1078. and when they say

  1079. something to him,

  1080. he gives a sensible

  1081. answer.

  1082. He's just like

  1083. any of you

  1084. in this room.

  1085. He looks so

  1086. normal.

  1087. He's just that.

  1088. You wouldn't think

  1089. if you walked

  1090. into a room

  1091. and saw somebody

  1092. seated and his

  1093. clothes and in

  1094. his right mind,

  1095. you just keep

  1096. walking,

  1097. right?

  1098. No big deal.

  1099. But this guy,

  1100. we've never seen

  1101. him like that.

  1102. How is it he's

  1103. like that?

  1104. Jesus has cast

  1105. these demons out

  1106. and here's the part

  1107. I like.

  1108. You ready?

  1109. Look at the end

  1110. of verse 15.

  1111. And they were

  1112. afraid.

  1113. That's funny,

  1114. isn't it?

  1115. I mean,

  1116. I don't care who

  1117. you are.

  1118. That's funny.

  1119. They were afraid.

  1120. They're more scared

  1121. of him sane

  1122. than they were

  1123. when he was insane.

  1124. At least insane

  1125. he was predictable.

  1126. Now,

  1127. they don't know

  1128. what's going on

  1129. with this guy.

  1130. And so,

  1131. it scares them

  1132. literally to death.

  1133. Well,

  1134. they do.

  1135. Well,

  1136. look at verse 16

  1137. and 17.

  1138. The eyewitnesses

  1139. described to them

  1140. what had happened

  1141. to the demon-possessed

  1142. man and told

  1143. about the pigs.

  1144. Then they began

  1145. to beg him

  1146. to leave

  1147. their region.

  1148. Now,

  1149. that's pretty

  1150. ironic,

  1151. isn't it?

  1152. Jesus comes,

  1153. solves their

  1154. problem.

  1155. This guy

  1156. has tormented

  1157. them for years

  1158. and years on end

  1159. in all likelihood.

  1160. Jesus

  1161. cast the demons

  1162. out

  1163. and he's seated,

  1164. clothed in his

  1165. right mind

  1166. and the change

  1167. is so radical

  1168. they're afraid

  1169. of him.

  1170. You know,

  1171. I gotta be honest

  1172. with you.

  1173. You shouldn't

  1174. surprise us too much.

  1175. I have seen

  1176. before in my life

  1177. people who Jesus

  1178. touched

  1179. who the change

  1180. was so radical

  1181. their old friends

  1182. were a little bit

  1183. afraid of him.

  1184. They just

  1185. actually wondered

  1186. what's going on

  1187. with this guy

  1188. and what's happened

  1189. he's had an encounter

  1190. with Christ.

  1191. Well,

  1192. look at verse 18.

  1193. This is my favorite

  1194. verse.

  1195. As he was getting

  1196. in the boat

  1197. the man who had

  1198. been demon-possessed

  1199. kept begging him,

  1200. read that phrase

  1201. kept begging him

  1202. to be with him.

  1203. I said before

  1204. the preceding verse

  1205. was my second

  1206. favorite verse.

  1207. This is my favorite

  1208. verse.

1209. Let me show you why.

  1210. You gotta picture

  1211. this scene.

  1212. Imagine that

  1213. we're on the shore

  1214. and that blue carpet

  1215. or purple carpet

1216. is the Sea of Galilee.

  1217. Those boats

  1218. weren't John boats.

  1219. They weren't

  1220. aluminum boats.

  1221. No Starcraft,

  1222. right?

  1223. These are heavy,

  1224. heavy wooden boats.

  1225. So you know

  1226. what they did?

  1227. They beached that boat.

  1228. They would have

  1229. just rowed

  1230. until it was up

  1231. on the shore.

  1232. When it got

1233. a little bit of it

  1234. up on the shore

  1235. they would have

  1236. gotten out

  1237. and those guys

  1238. in the boat

  1239. the disciples

  1240. would have grabbed it

  1241. and they would have

  1242. pulled it up

  1243. further on the shore

  1244. so that it doesn't

  1245. wash away.

  1246. Well,

  1247. they asked Jesus

  1248. to leave.

  1249. Jesus apparently

  1250. without argument

  1251. he acquiesces

  1252. to their wishes.

  1253. They go

  1254. and they wouldn't

  1255. have just piled

  1256. in the boat

  1257. again if you've ever

  1258. launched a boat

  1259. from a beach.

  1260. They push it out

  1261. to the edge

  1262. of the water,

  1263. right?

  1264. And then they

  1265. begin getting

  1266. in the boat.

  1267. The disciples

  1268. get in the boat.

1269. Jesus gets in the boat.

  1270. Probably one or two

  1271. stayed on the outside

1272. and they push it out

  1273. a little bit further

  1274. and now they're

1275. all getting in the boat

  1276. and they're taking

  1277. their oars

  1278. and they're going

  1279. to push it back

  1280. and then they're

  1281. going to begin

  1282. rowing it back,

  1283. right?

  1284. Well,

  1285. here's this demoniac

  1286. and he sees them

  1287. pushing the boat

1288. and I can see him

  1289. sitting there

  1290. and he stands up

  1291. and he walks over

  1292. to the water edge

1293. and he says to Jesus,

  1294. Jesus,

  1295. take me with you.

  1296. Take me with you.

  1297. And he wonders

  1298. if Jesus hears him

  1299. or not

  1300. and so he goes

  1301. down to the water's

  1302. edge.

  1303. Jesus,

  1304. don't leave me here.

  1305. Can you

  1306. understand why

  1307. you would do that?

  1308. All these town

  1309. people have hated him.

  1310. He's been public

  1311. enemy number one.

  1312. They chained him

  1313. and left him

  1314. for dead.

  1315. They've ridiculed him,

  1316. ostracized him.

  1317. He's cut off

  1318. from family

  1319. and friends

  1320. and everybody.

  1321. He has no life

  1322. here in his mind

  1323. and so they're

  1324. pushing this boat

  1325. out into the water

1326. and I can see him

  1327. do this

  1328. and I don't think

  1329. this is an exaggeration

  1330. at all.

  1331. I cannot imagine

  1332. in fact this story

  1333. happened any other way.

  1334. I can see him

  1335. put his hands

  1336. up on the bow

  1337. of that boat

1338. and look up at Jesus

  1339. in the boat

  1340. and say,

  1341. Jesus,

  1342. please take me

  1343. with you.

  1344. And he's

  1345. ankle deep

  1346. and knee deep

  1347. and on out

  1348. until the water's

  1349. up to his waist.

  1350. Jesus,

  1351. he's still begging.

  1352. He kept begging,

  1353. kept begging.

  1354. So he's asked repeatedly,

  1355. Jesus,

  1356. would you take me

  1357. with you?

  1358. Would you take me

  1359. with you?

  1360. Jesus' response

  1361. in one way,

  1362. just to be honest,

  1363. is a little bit

  1364. surprising,

  1365. isn't it?

  1366. Because you know

  1367. what he says.

  1368. He says,

  1369. no,

  1370. you can't come.

  1371. And finally,

  1372. when the water

  1373. may be chest high,

  1374. the man realizes,

  1375. he's not going

  1376. to let me come.

  1377. And he turns

  1378. and walks away.

1379. I want you to look

  1380. at that response

  1381. of Jesus.

  1382. Look back to the

  1383. scripture for a moment.

1384. Look at what it says.

  1385. Verse 19 and 20.

  1386. But he would not

  1387. let him.

  1388. Instead,

  1389. he told him,

  1390. go back home

  1391. to your own people

  1392. and report to them

  1393. how much the Lord

  1394. has done for you

  1395. and how he has

  1396. had mercy on you.

  1397. And boy,

  1398. God had had mercy

  1399. on him,

  1400. hadn't he?

  1401. So he went out

  1402. and began to proclaim

  1403. in the Decapolis,

  1404. that's the 10 city region,

  1405. how much Jesus

  1406. had done for him.

1407. And they were all amazed.

  1408. Jesus wasn't being

  1409. mean to him.

  1410. I think he'd have loved

  1411. to have had him

  1412. go with him.

1413. But he knew this man

1414. had a mission in life.

1415. God had changed his life

1416. and could use this man

1417. more than he could ever

  1418. have used him before.

  1419. And so he says,

  1420. you know what?

  1421. There are people

  1422. here in this region,

  1423. in these 10 cities

  1424. about this region,

  1425. they know you.

  1426. They know your reputation.

1427. I want you to go to them

1428. and I want you to show them

  1429. the mercy that God

1430. has done in your life,

  1431. the mercy God

  1432. has shown you,

1433. the work he has accomplished

  1434. in your life.

1435. I want you to be used

  1436. of God

1437. to speak to these people

  1438. when they see

  1439. how God has worked

  1440. in your life.

  1441. It'll change their lives.

  1442. And so that's what

  1443. the man does.

  1444. He begins going city

  1445. to city to city

  1446. telling them the story

  1447. about what God

1448. has done in his life.

1449. Three things I want you

  1450. to see today

  1451. and I close.

  1452. You ready?

  1453. Here's the first.

  1454. Jesus loves those

  1455. who others despise

  1456. and fear

  1457. and flee from.

  1458. He is the friend

  1459. of hardened sinners.

  1460. Jesus loves

  1461. those who others

  1462. despise,

  1463. fear,

  1464. and flee from.

  1465. In fact,

1466. if we're honest about it,

  1467. Jesus loves those

  1468. that many of us

  1469. in the church,

  1470. many of us

  1471. in the church

  1472. are exactly like

  1473. those townspeople,

  1474. the people

  1475. of the region

  1476. of Gadara.

  1477. People like this guy,

1478. if we're honest about it,

  1479. they scare us.

  1480. We don't want them

  1481. hanging around

  1482. our preschool.

  1483. We don't want them

  1484. hanging around

  1485. our youth.

  1486. We're uncomfortable

  1487. if they show up

  1488. in a couples class

  1489. because,

  1490. I mean,

  1491. look at us

  1492. and look at them.

  1493. They're just a lot

  1494. different from us.

1495. But I want to tell you

  1496. something.

  1497. When I read

  1498. the New Testament,

1499. when I read the Gospels,

  1500. if you said,

  1501. Pastor,

1502. I want you to tell me

  1503. one word about Jesus,

  1504. one sentence

  1505. about Jesus

  1506. you take from

  1507. reading the Gospels.

  1508. Do you know what

  1509. that sentence would be?

  1510. Jesus loves

  1511. sinners.

  1512. Wouldn't you agree

  1513. with that?

  1514. In fact,

  1515. every time,

  1516. almost,

  1517. he's in conflict

  1518. with the Pharisees,

  1519. it's over his love

  1520. of sinners.

1521. Why do you hang out

  1522. with drunks?

1523. Why do you hang out

  1524. with prostitutes?

1525. Why do you hang out?

1526. Can't you see this man

  1527. is crazy?

  1528. He's demon possessed.

  1529. Why do you keep

  1530. hanging out

  1531. with people like this?

  1532. And the answer

  1533. is pretty obvious.

  1534. Jesus

  1535. has compassion

  1536. and loves

  1537. hardened sinners.

  1538. Second thing

1539. I want you to take away

  1540. from this passage

  1541. this morning

  1542. is this.

  1543. Jesus

  1544. can change

  1545. anybody.

  1546. Now,

1547. I want to tell you,

  1548. I don't know

  1549. what you've done.

  1550. I don't know

  1551. how deep in sin

  1552. you are,

  1553. how immoral

  1554. you've been,

  1555. what's happened

  1556. in your life,

1557. the events of your life.

  1558. There may be

  1559. some tragedy,

  1560. there may be

  1561. some heartache,

  1562. there may be

  1563. some immorality,

1564. but I want to tell you

  1565. something.

  1566. I'm guessing

  1567. there's nobody here

  1568. whose life

  1569. was as ever

  1570. messed up

  1571. as this guy's

  1572. life was messed up.

  1573. And yet,

  1574. look at him now

  1575. and he's seated

  1576. and he's in his

  1577. right mind

  1578. and he's clothed

  1579. and God's going

  1580. to use him

  1581. in a miraculous way

  1582. in those

  1583. ten cities.

1584. And I want to tell you

  1585. something here.

  1586. In fact,

1587. I have prayed for you

  1588. before I even

  1589. came today

  1590. that God would bring

  1591. somebody here today

  1592. in this room

  1593. who could in some

  1594. small measure

  1595. identify

  1596. with this demoniac

  1597. because

1598. your life is a mess.

  1599. And in your mind

  1600. and heart,

1601. you've come to the place

  1602. you just think,

  1603. there's just not much

  1604. hope for me.

  1605. I mean,

  1606. I just keep making

  1607. one foolish decision

  1608. after another.

  1609. I've made so many

  1610. mistakes.

  1611. I've disappointed

  1612. my family.

  1613. I've disappointed

  1614. my friends.

  1615. I've disappointed

  1616. I'm just a mess.

  1617. And there's just

  1618. no hope for me.

1619. I want to tell you

  1620. something,

  1621. friend.

  1622. You couldn't be

  1623. further from the truth.

  1624. This message

  1625. is exactly

  1626. for you

  1627. because I want

  1628. to tell you something.

  1629. Jesus can change

  1630. anybody.

  1631. Amen?

  1632. I know that

  1633. because he changed

  1634. me.

  1635. I know who I was

  1636. and who I am.

  1637. And I'm no prize.

  1638. I'm not what I should be.

1639. But I'll tell you this.

  1640. I'm not who I used

  1641. to be.

  1642. And that's not because

  1643. of anything Ralph Carter

  1644. did.

  1645. That's because of the

  1646. Spirit of God

  1647. working in my life.

1648. And if he can change

1649. me and he can change

  1650. that demoniac,

  1651. he can change you,

  1652. whoever you are.

  1653. Maybe your first time,

1654. ever walking in the doors,

  1655. First Baptist Pickens.

  1656. He can change you.

  1657. You're not without hope.

  1658. Here's the last

  1659. and final thing

  1660. and I'll leave you

  1661. with this.

  1662. It is far more

  1663. comfortable to be

  1664. huddled up with

  1665. Jesus and fellow

  1666. believers.

1667. But he has put us

  1668. on a mission

  1669. in the world.

  1670. The world is a

  1671. scary, scary place,

  1672. isn't it?

  1673. I've got to be

  1674. honest with you.

  1675. I pray about it

  1676. all the time

  1677. because I've got

  1678. a little 15-year-old

  1679. granddaughter

  1680. and a 3-year-old

  1681. grandson.

1682. And I've got to be

  1683. honest, I don't like

  1684. the direction our

  1685. country is taking

  1686. and it scares me

  1687. for them because

  1688. the world has changed

  1689. radically from the

  1690. world that I was

  1691. born in and raised

  1692. in.

  1693. It's a scary,

  1694. scary place.

  1695. But I've got to

  1696. tell you today,

  1697. that's where he

  1698. wants us.

  1699. That's where he

  1700. wants us.

  1701. He doesn't want us

  1702. huddled up in our

  1703. little beautiful

  1704. churches,

  1705. holding each

  1706. other's hands,

  1707. looking for folk

  1708. who are more like

  1709. us to come and

  1710. join us.

  1711. How here so-and-so

  1712. moved to town and

  1713. they're a believer,

  1714. we'll rush out and

  1715. get them.

  1716. While there are tons

  1717. of lost people who've

  1718. been here forever and

  1719. we just don't bother

  1720. with them because

  1721. they're just not

  1722. church-type people,

  1723. you know?

  1724. I'm telling you,

  1725. it's comfortable when

  1726. you huddle up with

  1727. the sheep and it's

  1728. dangerous out in the

  1729. world.

  1730. But that's where

  1731. God wants us.

  1732. That's where he

  1733. wants us.

  1734. He wants us sharing

  1735. what God's done with

  1736. us to other people

1737. in whom he needs to

  1738. do a great work.

  1739. And I'll tell you,

  1740. you don't have to

  1741. drive far from this

  1742. church until you see

  1743. lots of people in

1744. whom he needs to do

  1745. a great work.

  1746. Amen?

  1747. Let's pray.

  1748. Lord, thank you for

  1749. your word.

  1750. Thank you for the

  1751. story you've given

  1752. us today.

  1753. Let us see ourselves.

1754. Let us see people who

  1755. are like the demoniac.

  1756. Give us compassion for

  1757. them.

  1758. Lord, I pray if there's

  1759. one here today who

  1760. they in some small

  1761. measure can identify

  1762. that demoniac, their

  1763. life's not nearly as

1764. out of order, but they

  1765. just know that they're

  1766. not heading the

  1767. direction they need to

1768. go and they need help

  1769. and they just have

  1770. resisted that because

  1771. they don't think there

  1772. is anything that can

  1773. help.

  1774. They've tried this and

  1775. they've tried that.

  1776. God, would you today

1777. open their eyes to what

  1778. you could do in

  1779. their life?

  1780. You could do a

  1781. miracle in their

  1782. life that you can

  1783. cause them to be

  1784. born again, that your

  1785. spirit will come into

  1786. them and regenerate

  1787. them and save them.

  1788. Please, oh God, do

  1789. that today.

  1790. If there's just one

  1791. person in this room

1792. who needs it, I pray

  1793. you'd speak to their

  1794. heart.

  1795. For we make this

  1796. prayer in Jesus' name

1797. and for his sake we

  1798. pray.

  1799. Amen.

  1800. Amen.

  1801. Amen.

  1802. Amen.
