  1. If you have your Bibles, I want you to open them this morning to Luke's Gospel, chapter 19,

  2. and I want to continue the series we began last week, the Jesus Effect.

  3. We're thinking about how Jesus impacts our lives, how he changes them.

  4. Everyone he ever came in contact with was different after having had a Jesus encounter,

  5. and so that's the line of thinking we're following again this morning.

  6. As we look at chapter 19, the Gospel of Luke,

  7. and we're going to examine the first 10 verses this morning in this passage.

  8. Now, it will seem unrelated, but just bear with me for a moment, and you'll see how it ties in in a second.

  9. Some of you are retired, and others of you, most of you, are still in the workforce, right?

  10. When you go to work, how many of you work off an agenda?

  11. You, in the morning when you get to the office, you make out a to-do list.

  12. Can I just see your hands? How many of you have a to-do list?

  13. Maybe at home you do that.

  14. How many of you don't have a to-do list?

  15. A lot of you in this service apparently don't have one,

  16. but I see some who are doing this.

  17. A lot of you are not going to say, right?

  18. You just don't know whether you do or you don't.

  19. When I was working all the time, every day when I would get to the office, I'd get there about an hour or four, most folk in our office,

  20. and when I'd get there, I'd use that quiet time to establish an agenda.

  21. I'd write out everything I wanted to accomplish that day,

  22. and then because I'm so OCD, I would go through at the end of the day,

  23. and I would check off those things that I had done even as I went through that list.

  24. I also meshed that with my calendar.

  25. I'd look at my calendar and say, well, I've got to be here at 10 or there at 12,

  26. or this is going on this afternoon,

  27. and so I'd blend those together,

  28. and some days were pretty light,

  29. and some days were average,

  30. and some days were really, really heavy,

  31. and it's that way.

  32. It don't matter what you do in life.

  33. We all have those kind of days, right,

  34. where they're kind of pressure packed,

  35. and we know I've got to be here at this time,

  36. and I've got to get this done,

  37. and so what's the enemy of the person who lives by an agenda?

  38. What's the enemy?

  39. You know what that is?

  40. Single word I'm looking for.

  41. Anybody know?

  42. It's the word interruptions.

  43. You know it.

  44. You probably just didn't say it, right?

  45. It's that interruption,

  46. that thing you hadn't planned for,

  47. that thing you hadn't counted on.

  48. It wasn't in your agenda,

  49. but it happens nonetheless,

  50. and at times it's a mild, annoying interruption,

  51. and every other time it can just devastate the schedule you may have laid out.

  52. Sometimes you recognize in the end that interruption was a godsend.

  53. It was a blessing,

  54. but oftentimes we're honest about it.

  55. They're annoying when we get interrupted in what we plan to do for the day.

  56. Well, I want to just say to you,

  57. I don't think anybody knew more about interruptions to what their agenda was than Jesus.

  58. I mean, Jesus just every day of his life,

  59. when you read the Gospels,

  60. you find he's interrupted.

  61. Mark is my favorite Gospel,

  62. and Mark uses one word,

  63. the King James translates it one way,

  64. others' translations another,

  65. straightway or immediately,

  66. and that's because Mark is the action Gospel,

  67. and so when you come to the Gospel of Mark,

  68. it says straightway Jesus did,

  69. blah, blah, blah,

  70. and then straightway Jesus did,

  71. blah, blah, blah,

  72. and then straightway Jesus did,

  73. and it's because he's moving from one thing to another,

  74. to another,

  75. to another.

  76. You probably have difficulty finding this,

  77. and a better example of it,

  78. than in the Gospel of Mark,

  79. chapter five.

  80. Jesus,

  81. it's the story we looked at last week,

  82. he goes on the Sea of Galilee,

  83. to the southeast region of Gadara.

  84. There,

  85. he's got something he wants to do,

  86. obviously,

  87. or he wouldn't have gone to that place.

  88. When he steps out of the boat,

  89. he's confronted by this demoniac.

  90. Remember the story we looked at last week?

  91. Jesus didn't go looking for the demoniac,

  92. the demoniac came rushing to Jesus.

  93. Jesus spent several hours there in that location,

  94. he talked to the man,

  95. he cast the demons out,

  96. they go to town,

  97. they get the townspeople,

  98. a big crowd comes back,

  99. they see what's happened to the man,

  100. they're now more afraid of him than they were before,

  101. and they ask Jesus to leave.

  102. Have you ever thought about that?

  103. Why was he going to Gadara?

  104. And then they ask him to leave,

  105. and he accommodates him,

  106. he gets back in the boat,

  107. and he goes away.

  108. Whatever he had gone there for,

  109. at least in his mind,

  110. or the disciples man,

  111. it never gets accomplished,

  112. unless he had the foresight to know,

  113. this demoniac is my business there.

  114. He made it his business,

  115. but it appears to be an interruption,

  116. right?

  117. He leaves there,

  118. and he goes back across the sea,

  119. and this time he comes to Capernaum,

  120. and when he gets to Capernaum,

  121. guess what?

  122. There he meets this man named Jairus,

  123. who is frantic.

  124. He comes running up,

  125. huge,

  126. massive crowd,

  127. apparently thousands,

  128. that's not an exaggeration,

  129. apparently thousands,

  130. certainly hundreds,

  131. but probably thousands of people,

  132. had gathered to see him,

  133. as they so often did.

  134. That first year of his ministry,

  135. I mean the masses just came out of the woodwork,

  136. to see Jesus.

  137. And so when he gets there,

  138. Jairus comes running up,

  139. I've got a little girl,

  140. she's sick at home,

  141. she's about to die,

  142. would you come to my house?

  143. Well,

  144. I don't know what his agenda was for the day,

  145. but no doubt he had one in his head,

  146. here's where I'm going,

  147. but Jairus suddenly interrupts him,

  148. and he's off to Jairus' house.

  149. On the way,

  150. this crowd is so massive,

  151. they're pushing and shoving,

  152. a woman reaches down,

  153. and touches the hem of his garment.

  154. Jesus immediately knows,

  155. power has left him.

  156. He turns to the crowd,

  157. and he says to his disciples,

  158. somebody here touch me,

  159. who touched me?

  160. Peter turns and says,

  161. Lord,

  162. who hasn't touched you?

  163. Peter thinks,

  164. you've got to be kidding,

  165. right?

  166. I mean,

  167. everybody,

  168. they're about to stampede us to death.

  169. And so,

  170. he deals with the woman,

  171. with the issue of blood,

  172. he later then,

  173. has someone come and say,

  174. hey,

  175. no need to go to Jairus' house,

  176. she's dead.

  177. Another interruption,

  178. right?

  179. Keeps him from getting to Jairus' house,

  180. what appears to be on time.

  181. But he goes anyway,

  182. and then he raises this girl from the dead.

  183. Can I tell you something?

  184. That's typical,

  185. I believe,

  186. of what Jesus' life was like.

  187. I think he spent most of his time

  188. dealing with people who interrupted his agenda.

  189. I want to show you another illustration of that.

  190. Look with me to Luke 19,

    Luke 19:1

  191. verse 1.

  192. He entered Jericho

  193. and was passing through.

  194. The only thing you can make out of that,

  195. if Luke is telling us accurately,

  196. and I believe he is,

  197. Jesus didn't really have business

  198. that was on his schedule in Jericho.

  199. You agree with that?

  200. That's yes and no and don't know,

  201. right?

  202. He's come to Jericho,

  203. he's simply passing through.

  204. You don't know this yet,

  205. but in a second you're going to find out

  206. there is a huge crowd again

  207. that is assembled to see him.

  208. If you look on down to verse 28,

  209. just look down the page of verse 28,

  210. you see the heading there above verse 28,

  211. the triumphal entry.

  212. That's where he's headed.

  213. He's going to Jerusalem.

  214. He's going there to die.

  215. This is his ultimate purpose.

  216. He's been sent to die for humanity,

  217. to save humanity from their sins

  218. by dying on the cross.

  219. He's going to fulfill his father's command.

  220. It's the most urgent business he has.

  221. So he's passing through Jericho

  222. and was passing through,

  223. verse 2 says,

  224. there was a man named Zacchaeus

  225. who was a chief tax collector

  226. and he was rich.

  227. So out of nowhere,

  228. Luke introduces us to this character

  229. who's not named anywhere else in scripture

  230. and his name is Zacchaeus.

  231. This is what we know about him.

  232. He's got lots of money.

  233. He's rich.

  234. And the other thing is,

  235. he's a tax collector.

  236. Can I tell you something?

  237. That one fact

  238. gives us a pretty clear picture

  239. of who Zacchaeus is.

  240. Imagine that in years to come,

  241. I pray this never happens,

  242. but imagine 100 years from now,

  243. 20 years from now,

  244. the Chinese somehow overtake America

  245. and they are dominating our land.

  246. They're occupying our land.

  247. They have a military presence here.

  248. They're not interested in moving to the United States,

  249. but they're going to dominate our country.

  250. And so they set up a government

  251. and they want to raise taxes in America

  252. not to support the American government,

  253. but the Chinese government.

  254. And so they find agents in America

  255. who are willing to raise taxes

  256. be responsible for gathering taxes from Americans

  257. to send to China.

  258. That's what is happening in chapter 19

  259. with this man, Zacchaeus.

  260. The Greeks had overthrown Israel.

  261. The Romans had overthrown the Greeks.

  262. It's occupied by foreigners.

  263. There were certain blessings.

  264. They were protected.

  265. They were able to do business.

  266. They were able to travel.

  267. They were protected by their neighboring enemies.

  268. But the downside was

  269. they have no voice in government.

  270. The Romans are appointing the leaders

  271. and the Romans are raising taxes

  272. and they're doing it

  273. through their Hebrew fellow citizens.

  274. The Hebrews would go and apply to the Romans

  275. to be these tax collectors

  276. and they would make bids

  277. and whoever would get the bid

  278. would get the job.

  279. This is a chief tax collector, Luke tells us,

  280. which means he has other tax collectors

  281. who are under him.

  282. Can you imagine that there's someone here

  283. in Pickens County

  284. and he's the person who is assessing taxes

  285. and he's taking the money,

  286. putting a cut in his pocket

  287. and sending the rest of the money to China?

  288. How do you think you'd feel about that guy?

  289. That's how they feel about Zacchaeus.

  290. He's a traitor.

  291. He's a cheat.

  292. He's a scoundrel.

  293. And so whenever you read about tax collectors

  294. in the New Testament,

  295. it always puts them right in there

  296. with the most immoral of the immoral.

  297. They're sinners in their thinking

  298. in the eyes of God.

  299. Well, look, if you will,

  300. the very next verse, verse three.

  301. He was trying to see Jesus,

  302. speaking of Zacchaeus,

  303. he was trying to see who Jesus was,

  304. but he was not able because of the crowd

  305. since he was a short man.

  306. Now, here's where you understand

  307. there's a huge crowd.

  308. He's not able to see Jesus.

  309. He wants to see Jesus.

  310. We also find he's a short fellow.

  311. Now, why the curiosity about Jesus?

  312. Well, I want to tell you something.

  313. That's the reason for the crowd.

  314. Everywhere he went,

  315. everybody wanted to see Jesus.

  316. If Jesus were alive today

  317. and doing the things he did

  318. in the New Testament era,

  319. I want to tell you something.

  320. Everybody in this auditorium,

  321. whether you're a believer or not,

  322. everybody in Pickens County

  323. would want to meet Jesus.

  324. Well, why?

  325. He calls people with withered hands

  326. to suddenly have a whole hand.

  327. He took people who were verifiably crippled

  328. and he made them walk again.

  329. He calls people who were blind

  330. and could not see a thing.

  331. Their eyes were open

  332. and they were made whole.

  333. People who were deaf could hear.

  334. And remember Jairus?

  335. His daughter is graveyard dead

  336. and Jesus raises her

  337. back to life again.

  338. You can understand clearly

  339. why anyone who heard about Jesus coming to town

  340. would immediately flock out to see Jesus.

  341. His only problem is he's short.

  342. Now, I want to just say

  343. there are advantages at times

  344. to being short.

  345. This last week,

  346. we were staying at these friends' house

  347. down at the lake

  348. and they got a dock

  349. and I don't know why they built it this way,

  350. but they put an iron bar across this dock

  351. that's about five feet, eight inches tall.

  352. Unfortunately, I'm six feet tall.

  353. And so, twice,

  354. I banged my head in that thing, right?

  355. There's an advantage at times

  356. to being short,

  357. but there are also, obviously,

  358. some disadvantages

  359. at times to being short.

  360. If you're in a crowd

  361. and you're wanting to see over the crowd,

  362. it's a disadvantage.

  363. It's an advantage to be tall.

  364. Last night,

  365. we had our 51st reunion

  366. in Seneca

  367. and high school reunion

  368. and when we gathered at the end,

  369. they said,

  370. let's get a picture of everybody.

  371. So, you know how that went down, right?

  372. All the short people get on the front.

  373. Some of them kneel down.

  374. The mid-sized folk,

  375. they're in the middle.

  376. The tallest ones,

  377. they're in the back

  378. and they're looking over the tops

  379. and everybody is cool with doing that

  380. because it's the courteous thing.

  381. It's what you normally do.

  382. Here's the question.

  383. Why didn't they let Zacchaeus

  384. come to the front of the crowd?

  385. I mean,

  386. y'all ever go into a parade?

  387. You look behind you,

  388. there's a kid behind you,

  389. there's somebody short behind you.

  390. What do you do?

  391. Sure, would you have to come up here and stand?

  392. And they get in front of him.

  393. Why didn't they do that with Zacchaeus?

  394. Because they hate Zacchaeus.

  395. Zacchaeus is not,

  396. they don't even want him in the crowd.

  397. They don't want him to be a part of this parade,

  398. let alone to give him a front row seat.

  399. Well, what does he do?

  400. Look at verse four.

  401. So running ahead,

  402. he climbed up a sycamore tree

  403. to see Jesus

  404. since he was about to pass that way.

  405. Now that's pretty clever,

  406. don't you think?

  407. He wants to see Jesus.

  408. He wants to maybe speak a word to Jesus.

  409. We don't even know that.

  410. He just wants to see him.

  411. Just all these tales he's been told.

  412. Who is this Jesus?

  413. What does he look like?

  414. What's he doing?

  415. So he thinks,

  416. hey, you know what?

  417. He's moving in this direction.

  418. I bet if I run down here a distance

  419. and I climb up in that tree,

  420. he's going to pass by

  421. and so he puts his plan into effect.

  422. He goes down,

  423. he climbs the tree.

  424. Now it's a clever plan,

  425. but let's just be honest about it, right?

  426. It's a little bit,

  427. what?

  428. Weird, right?

  429. I mean,

  430. what grown man

  431. climbs trees

  432. to get to see people pass by?

  433. So it's a clever plan,

  434. but it's a little bit

  435. on the weird,

  436. unusual side.

  437. Well, look at verse five.

  438. When Jesus came to the place,

  439. he looked up

  440. and said to him,

  441. Zacchaeus, hurry

  442. and come down

  443. because today

  444. I must stay at your house.

  445. So Jesus

  446. is walking through this crowd.

  447. I mean,

  448. they're talking to him.

  449. They're wanting to reach out

  450. and touch him.

  451. They're asking him questions,

  452. no doubt.

  453. He's moving along slowly

  454. and he gets down the way

  455. and finally

  456. he comes to the place

  457. where here is Zacchaeus

  458. perched up in this tree

  459. and I can just see Jesus.

  460. Now you got to use

  461. your imagination

  462. and this is not

  463. adding to the scripture.

  464. It's just allowing it

  465. to come alive

  466. because all these

  467. are real stories.

  468. If you'd have had

  469. a camcorder,

  470. you could have videotaped

  471. everything I'm talking about

  472. if they'd had a camcorder

  473. in that day.

  474. It's real history

  475. unfolding for our eyes.

  476. So he gets down

  477. to this tree

  478. and he looks up

  479. and I can just see

  480. Jesus thinking to himself.

  481. Can't you?

  482. Boy, that's kind of weird.

  483. Little short guy

  484. is up in the tree

  485. and he looks up at him

  486. and he calls him

  487. by name.

  488. As far as we know,

  489. he'd never been introduced

  490. to Zacchaeus.

  491. Didn't know Zacchaeus.

  492. Could be God just instantly

  493. because he is the son of God

  494. told him this is Zacchaeus.

  495. Zacchaeus could be,

  496. could be that he's heard

  497. the crowd laughing at Zacchaeus.

  498. Look at that little nut

  499. up in the tree.

  500. Look at that little guy

  501. up in the tree.

  502. He is so crazy.

  503. Zacchaeus would do anything.

  504. But you know what Jesus says?

  505. Zacchaeus,

  506. why don't you,

  507. and listen to this,

  508. not just come down,

  509. quickly come down.

  510. Boy, get out of that tree.

  511. I need to go home with you

  512. and lodge with you today.

  513. Well, I just got to tell you,

  514. I don't know how it was

  515. at your house.

  516. If you were one of my children

  517. and you were coming along

  518. and you asked to go

  519. to somebody's house

  520. and they hadn't invited you,

  521. boy, you got to talk into, right?

  522. My son used to be

  523. the world's worst.

  524. He'd come and say,

  525. Daddy, Jonathan Dierman's mom,

  526. Elaine, said that I could

  527. go home with him today.

  528. My first question always was,

  529. did they invite you

  530. or do they invite you?

  531. And if he said,

  532. well, I kind of asked him

  533. if I could go,

  534. then the answer's always

  535. going to be no, right?

  536. If Mary had been there

  537. and Jesus had been a little boy,

  538. he'd have got scolded.

  539. You don't invite yourself

  540. to somebody's house.

  541. I mean, that's a little weird

  542. seeing a guy up in a tree,

  543. but it's also a little weird

  544. to say, hey, buddy,

  545. I haven't met you yet,

  546. but come down

  547. and take me to your house today, right?

  548. How about feed me?

  549. If you don't think it's weird,

  550. send me out to church

  551. because I'm going to go

  552. to your house for lunch, right?

  553. So, a little bit weird,

  554. but that's what Jesus does.

  555. Look at verse 6.

  556. Quickly he came down

  557. and welcomed him joyfully.

  558. You know what Luke's saying to us?

  559. I mean, you put that,

  560. those phrases,

  561. quickly he comes down,

  562. joyfully.

  563. Yes, Jesus.

  564. Yes, Jesus.

  565. By all means.

  566. I live down on South Main.

  567. Let's go there now, right?

  568. I mean, he's thrilled.

  569. It's his way of saying,

  570. Zacchaeus was giddy.

  571. I mean, he's past just being okay with it.

  572. He's excited.

  573. In fact, I can almost see him

  574. puff his chest out a little bit,

  575. can't you?

  576. I mean, of all the people here in Jericho,

  577. Jesus is coming to my house, right?

  578. And so, off they go

  579. to Zacchaeus' house.

  580. Well, how'd the crowd react?

  581. They weren't nearly as thrilled.

  582. Look at verse 7.

  583. All who saw it began to complain.

  584. He's gone to lodge with a sinful man.

  585. Jesus actually loses some credibility

  586. at this point

  587. with the religious folk of the day.

  588. Can I tell you something?

  589. And you already know this

  590. because I know you've read

  591. the New Testament many times.

  592. When you read the New Testament,

  593. the Gospels especially,

  594. you're bombarded by this same idea

  595. that you find here in this verse

  596. we just read.

  597. They're always giving grief to Jesus

  598. over the company he kept.

  599. And they're always raising suspicion.

  600. Did you not know this man was a sinner?

  601. Jesus, I thought you knew everything.

  602. I thought you,

  603. some say you're the Son of God,

  604. you're the Messiah.

  605. Now, don't you know who this man is?

  606. This man is the tax collector.

  607. He's the chief of sinners.

  608. Why are you going home with him?

  609. Now, I'm just gonna throw this in

  610. as a free bonus, okay?

  611. Isn't it amazing

  612. how lost people were attracted to Jesus?

  613. Have you ever thought about it?

  614. I've thought about it a whole lot.

  615. Because I gotta be honest with you,

  616. I'm fearful lost people

  617. are not always attracted to me.

  618. In fact, I look at a lot of church people

  619. throughout my ministry

  620. and we seem to kinda repel them,

  621. don't we?

  622. But Jesus was like a magnet to them.

  623. There's something about Jesus,

  624. he was so comfortable with them.

  625. I don't mean he liked their lifestyles,

  626. no indication of that.

  627. But I'm gonna tell you something.

  628. There was something about Jesus,

  629. they saw something in him,

  630. he was so loving,

  631. so kind,

  632. so compassionate.

  633. He didn't let their actions

  634. and attitudes get in the way

  635. of his loving them

  636. to the point that they were

  637. comfortable with him.

  638. And I got news for you,

  639. I've seen a lot of people

  640. who are not very comfortable

  641. with church people.

  642. I mean,

  643. we kinda give them the hives at times.

  644. Have you ever noticed that?

  645. You can see it when you begin to ask them,

  646. would you come to church?

  647. Eh, no, I don't want to.

  648. You have them over for hot dogs,

  649. they're okay.

  650. You go out in the backyard

  651. and you have a cookout,

  652. they're okay.

  653. But go to the church?

  654. Eh, I don't know, man.

  655. So,

  656. Jesus was comfortable

  657. with lost people

  658. and then as a result,

  659. lost people were comfortable

  660. with Jesus.

  661. Look at verse eight.

  662. They're home now,

  663. they've had dinner,

  664. a conversation has ensued,

  665. we don't know what it was,

  666. but I want you to notice

  667. verse eight.

  668. But Zacchaeus stood there,

  669. they would eat their meals

  670. in a lying position

  671. on the floor.

  672. Zacchaeus stood there

  673. and said to the Lord,

  674. look,

  675. I'll give half

  676. of my possessions

  677. to the poor Lord

  678. and if I have extorted

  679. anything from anyone,

  680. I'll pay back

  681. four times

  682. as much.

  683. Now,

  684. I'm fearful

  685. that when we read

  686. these stories,

  687. we become so accustomed

  688. to reading them,

  689. we've heard them

  690. so many times,

  691. this is one you've heard

  692. since you were a little bitty kid,

  693. that it goes in one ear

  694. and just out the other.

  695. But I really want you

  696. to think about it

  697. and I want you to think

  698. about putting yourself

  699. in Zacchaeus' shoes.

  700. We're not talking

  701. about a tithe,

  702. we're not talking

  703. about half of his

  704. weekly income

  705. that week,

  706. we're talking about

  707. a man who is an adult

  708. who's worked

  709. all of his adult life

  710. and he has been

  711. amassing wealth,

  712. just like all of us

  713. in this room.

  714. Now,

  715. some of you

  716. are better at that

  717. than others

  718. and some of you

  719. have amassed more

  720. than others

  721. but all of us,

  722. especially those my age,

  723. you've worked

  724. your whole life

  725. to surround yourself

  726. with a lot of stuff,

  727. right?

  728. He's giving away

  729. half of his stuff.

  730. Half of my possessions

  731. I give to the poor.

  732. If you have children

  733. and you have a will

  734. you thought real carefully

  735. about,

  736. now what do I want

  737. to do with my money?

  738. When I die,

  739. I'm going to give

  740. half to this child

  741. and half to that child

  742. or I'm going to

  743. divide it into thirds

  744. if I've got three children

  745. or you know what

  746. you're going to do

  747. with your money

  748. but I'm going to tell you

  749. something,

  750. that's a major decision.

  751. You don't come about

  752. that flippantly

  753. because you recognize

  754. this is my life's earnings.

  755. We're talking about

  756. his 401k,

  757. we're talking about

  758. his checking account,

  759. his savings account,

  760. money's got hid

  761. out there in the shed.

  762. We're talking about

  763. everything he's got,

  764. all of his possessions,

  765. his houses,

  766. his land,

  767. if he owns land.

  768. Half of everything

  769. I'm going to give away.

  770. Big deal.

  771. But then he says this,

  772. Master,

  773. I'll tell you something,

  774. if I've cheated anybody,

  775. now understand

  776. he's not talking about

  777. that which he was paid

  778. by the Roman government

  779. to perform this service

  780. of collecting taxes,

  781. but he's talking about

  782. that additional

  783. that he just stiffed them for,

  784. okay,

  785. where he took advantage of them.

  786. He says,

  787. anything I've taken advantage

  788. of anybody,

  789. I've extorted them

  790. of their money,

  791. I'm going to pay back

  792. four times

  793. out of that remaining half,

  794. I'm going to pay back

  795. four times

  796. what I took.

  797. Now here's a guy,

  798. here's what's phenomenal about it.

  799. Here's a guy

  800. who all his life,

  801. he's been in the amassing mode.

  802. He's been in the collecting mode,

  803. no pun intended.

  804. He's been gathering for himself

  805. and only for himself

  806. and now suddenly,

  807. suddenly,

  808. he's in the giving mode.

  809. You can't just say

  810. he's generous,

  811. I mean he's given away

  812. half of everything he got

  813. and he's making restitution

  814. four times

  815. what he's taken.

  816. It's incredible.

  817. I mean,

  818. who does that?

  819. How does that happen?

  820. Look at the very next verse,

  821. if you will.

  822. Verse nine.

  823. Today,

  824. salvation has come to this house,

  825. Jesus told him,

  826. because he too

  827. is a son of Abraham.

  828. There's the explanation.

  829. Jesus says to these people

  830. who are standing there

  831. with their mouth agape,

  832. what did Zacchaeus just do?

  833. I mean,

  834. he just gave away

  835. almost every,

  836. what did he do?

  837. Jesus said,

  838. let me tell you what he did.

  839. Salvation has come

  840. to this house today.

  841. Now,

  842. I want you to be sure

  843. to get this.

  844. Jesus is not saying,

  845. wow,

  846. Zacchaeus,

  847. you gave away

  848. half to the poor.

  849. You're now concerned

  850. about the poor

  851. and not just yourself.

  852. You've become an honest man,

  853. a man of integrity.

  854. You're giving back

  855. four times

  856. what you've stolen,

  857. you've extorted.

  858. Wow.

  859. You know what?

  860. You've earned

  861. your salvation.

  862. Not what he's saying

  863. at all.

  864. What he's doing

  865. is giving explanation

  866. to why

  867. Zacchaeus

  868. has done

  869. what he's done.

  870. Salvation,

  871. Jesus has this ability

  872. that we don't have.

  873. He looks

  874. into Zacchaeus' heart.

  875. He doesn't have

  876. to see him

  877. walking out.

  878. He didn't have

  879. to see him

  880. take a pasture

  881. out of the hand.

  882. He doesn't have

  883. to see him kneel.

  884. He knows Zacchaeus

  885. has had a change

  886. of heart,

  887. that something

  888. has transformed him.

  889. He's a new man.

  890. He's not the same Zacchaeus

  891. that Jesus walked home

  892. from that sycamore tree with.

  893. He's different

  894. in every way.

  895. He's got a different heart,

  896. a different soul,

  897. a different spirit.

  898. And so now

  899. he says

  900. to Zacchaeus

  901. and to those watching,

  902. let me tell you

  903. what's happened here.

  904. Salvation has occurred here.

  905. This man has been saved.

  906. God has transformed

  907. his life.

  908. He's not the same

  909. old tax collector

  910. he used to be.

  911. He is a son

  912. of Abraham.

  913. Now finally

  914. look at verse 10.

  915. For the son of man

  916. has come to seek

  917. and to save

  918. the lost.

  919. Jesus says

  920. I know about

  921. the salvation thing.

  922. That's why I've come.

  923. I've come

  924. for people

  925. just like Zacchaeus.

  926. Can I tell you something?

  927. Jesus is telling us

  928. this is my agenda.

  929. My agenda is

  930. to see people

  931. radically transformed

  932. for God.

  933. To see people

  934. who are godless

  935. become filled with God.

  936. To see people

  937. who are lost

  938. be saved.

  939. Can I just tell you

  940. quickly in passing

  941. that ought to be

  942. the mission

  943. of this church

  944. and every church

  945. that bears the name

  946. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  947. Our mission

  948. is not to fill buildings

  949. to build buildings.

  950. Our mission

  951. is not just

  952. to see how much

  953. money we can give

  954. to missions.

  955. Our mission

  956. should always be this.

  957. Our mission

  958. should be

  959. to see people

  960. radically changed

  961. by the gospel

  962. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  963. To see Jesus

  964. somehow touch

  965. people's lives

  966. and make them

  967. different creatures

  968. all together.

  969. together.

  970. I was a pastor

  971. full-time pastor

  972. for 40 years.

  973. You know one of the things

  974. the long-eyed pastor

  975. that disheartened me

  976. the most?

  977. Every year

  978. you're probably not aware

  979. of this as a church member

  980. but pastors and staff

  981. will know this.

  982. Every year

  983. you get a letter

  984. from the association

  985. and they say

  986. give us this information

  987. and you pass it

  988. to the association

  989. and the association

  990. passes it

  991. to the state convention

  992. and the state convention

  993. passes it

  994. to the national convention

  995. and they ask you

  996. things like this

  997. how many people

  998. were baptized?

  999. How many people

  1000. joined the church?

  1001. How much money

  1002. did you give?

  1003. How much money

  1004. did you give

  1005. to the cooperative program?

  1006. How much money

  1007. did you designate

  1008. to missions?

  1009. How many were involved

  1010. in music ministry?

  1011. How many were involved

  1012. in youth ministry?

  1013. How many were in

1014. since you get the picture?

  1015. You know

  1016. of those forms

  1017. that we filled out

  1018. for 40 years

  1019. I never had once

  1020. them ask this question

  1021. how many people's lives

  1022. did you see

  1023. miraculously changed?

  1024. Maybe they just thought

  1025. well pastors

  1026. wouldn't be able

  1027. to answer that

  1028. because it's rather subjective

1029. but I want to tell you

  1030. something

  1031. when somebody

  1032. is radically changed

  1033. like Zacchaeus

  1034. has changed

1035. you got to see that

  1036. don't you?

  1037. Don't you?

  1038. Have you ever seen

  1039. anybody change

  1040. like Zacchaeus?

  1041. I've seen people

  1042. change like that

  1043. I can begin

  1044. to list people

  1045. who I've seen

  1046. were changed like that

  1047. we know them

  1048. here's the problem

1049. they don't want to know that

  1050. you know why?

1051. Because that's going to be

  1052. a much smaller number

  1053. than those other numbers

  1054. we like to report

  1055. those people

  1056. that are really

  1057. radically

  1058. I mean

1059. Jesus comes in their heart

  1060. and he saves them

  1061. and change them

  1062. that's going to be

  1063. a lot smaller

1064. but we're aware of it

  1065. when we see it

1066. you've seen it right here

  1067. at Pickens First

  1068. you've seen that person

  1069. who they came in

  1070. they trusted Christ

  1071. and boom

  1072. boy

1073. God just did a work

  1074. a marvelous work

  1075. in their life

  1076. so here's what I want you

1077. to do with this message

  1078. and I want you

1079. to do something with it

1080. I want you just to

  1081. hear it

1082. I'm going to give you

  1083. four assignments today

  1084. okay

  1085. here's the first

1086. I want you to start

  1087. reacting to interruptions

  1088. to your agenda

  1089. differently

  1090. than you ever have

  1091. in the past

  1092. now I hope you'll

  1093. write these down

  1094. because if you don't

  1095. write them down

  1096. you won't be able

  1097. to do them

  1098. and I want you

  1099. to do them

  1100. okay

  1101. I don't want you

  1102. just to hear them

  1103. I want you

  1104. to do them

  1105. I want you

  1106. to go out

  1107. beginning today

  1108. as soon as the

  1109. service is over

  1110. I want you

1111. to begin to do them

  1112. I want you

  1113. to start reacting

  1114. to interruptions

  1115. to your agenda

  1116. differently

  1117. and here's how

  1118. I want you

  1119. to do that

  1120. when an interruption

  1121. in your agenda

  1122. your plan

  1123. for the day

  1124. occurs

  1125. I want you

  1126. to immediately

  1127. ask yourself

  1128. instead of

  1129. getting mad

  1130. instead of

  1131. getting a little

  1132. peeved

  1133. instead of

  1134. being annoyed

  1135. I want you

  1136. to ask yourself

  1137. this question

  1138. could it be

  1139. that God

  1140. is singling

  1141. me out

  1142. through this

  1143. interruption

  1144. because this

  1145. person

  1146. is my agenda

  1147. for the day

  1148. could this be

  1149. a divine

  1150. appointment

  1151. could this be

  1152. the reason God

  1153. has put me

  1154. exactly in this

  1155. place that I am

  1156. now

  1157. I mean God

  1158. knew

  1159. I had these

  1160. plans

  1161. God knew

  1162. this is what

  1163. I was going

  1164. to be doing

  1165. today

  1166. right

  1167. he always

  1168. does

  1169. so if that

  1170. interruption

  1171. occurs

  1172. shouldn't we

  1173. be asking

  1174. ourselves

  1175. if we

  1176. want to be

  1177. somebody

  1178. who is

  1179. on God's

  1180. agenda

  1181. rather than

  1182. our own

  1183. agenda

  1184. could it be

  1185. that God

  1186. has allowed

  1187. this interruption

  1188. to occur

  1189. because this

  1190. is the new

  1191. plan that God

  1192. has given

  1193. me today

  1194. I mean this

  1195. guy right here

  1196. on the side

  1197. of the road

  1198. this gas can

  1199. in his hand

  1200. who needs

  1201. some help

  1202. maybe he's

  1203. my agenda

  1204. maybe God's

  1205. redirecting my

  1206. path

  1207. and this guy

  1208. has become

  1209. my agenda

  1210. for the day

  1211. I'll tell you

  1212. this and I'll

  1213. pass on to the

  1214. second thing I'll

  1215. have you do

  1216. I know you

  1217. think your agenda

  1218. is important

  1219. and I think my

  1220. agenda is important

  1221. and I want to

  1222. get it done

  1223. I like checking

  1224. off those things

  1225. but I want to

  1226. tell you something

  1227. God's agenda

  1228. always trumps

  1229. our agenda

  1230. do you know

  1231. that

  1232. you may think

  1233. you know best

  1234. about you

  1235. but I'm going

  1236. to tell you

  1237. something

  1238. God's agenda

  1239. always trumps

  1240. your agenda

  1241. here's the second

  1242. thing

  1243. I want you to

  1244. start and you're

  1245. going to think

  1246. I'm crazy

  1247. when I tell you

  1248. this but write

  1249. it down anyway

  1250. I want you to

  1251. start looking

  1252. for men

  1253. up in trees

  1254. I want you to

  1255. start everywhere

  1256. you go

  1257. looking for

  1258. people

  1259. up in trees

  1260. Jesus

  1261. saw

  1262. Nicodemus

  1263. or rather

  1264. Zacchaeus

  1265. forgive me

  1266. Jesus saw

  1267. Zacchaeus

  1268. and he

  1269. immediately

  1270. knew

  1271. that's a

  1272. needy guy

  1273. right there

  1274. I mean he

  1275. put it all

  1276. together

  1277. in just a

  1278. matter of

  1279. moments

  1280. and he

  1281. knew

  1282. Zacchaeus

  1283. needed him

  1284. so Zacchaeus

  1285. come down

  1286. out of that

  1287. tree

  1288. I need to

  1289. go to your

  1290. house

  1291. you need to

  1292. take care

  1293. of me

  1294. today

  1295. I want you

  1296. to start

  1297. looking for

  1298. people in

  1299. trees

  1300. you say

  1301. what are you

  1302. talking about

  1303. preacher

  1304. well how many

  1305. of you when

  1306. you were kids

  1307. looked for

  1308. four leaf clovers

  1309. now some of you

  1310. young ones

  1311. are going to

  1312. probably say

  1313. what's he

  1314. talking about

  1315. right

  1316. when you're an

  1317. old guy like

  1318. me when we

  1319. were kids

  1320. we didn't

  1321. have a lot

  1322. to do

  1323. so we'd

  1324. go in the

  1325. yard and

  1326. we'd look

  1327. for four leaf

  1328. clovers

  1329. you got a

  1330. yard that had

  1331. a lot of

  1332. clover

  1333. I've seen

  1334. kids that

  1335. spend hours

  1336. looking for

  1337. four leaf

  1338. clovers

  1339. how many

  1340. of you ever

  1341. found a

  1342. four leaf

  1343. clover

  1344. a lot

  1345. look here

  1346. a lot of

  1347. people

  1348. good for

  1349. you

  1350. I think

  1351. some of

  1352. you are

  1353. lying

  1354. okay

  1355. I feel like

  1356. a real dummy

  1357. because I

  1358. want to tell you

  1359. something I've

  1360. never found

  1361. one

  1362. I was at a

  1363. picnic

  1364. the reason I

  1365. use this

  1366. illustration

  1367. I was at a

  1368. picnic with

  1369. some church folk

  1370. a long time

  1371. ago and

  1372. somehow

  1373. we're in an

  1374. area where

  1375. there's a lot

  1376. of clover

  1377. and we got

  1378. this blanket

  1379. on the ground

  1380. and me and

  1381. Regina and

  1382. this other

  1383. couple sitting

  1384. there and

  1385. I said look

  1386. at all this

  1387. clover I

  1388. wonder if we

  1389. could find a

  1390. four leaf

  1391. clover and

  1392. this woman

  1393. says oh

  1394. sure we

  1395. can find

  1396. some easy

  1397. and I

  1398. said really

  1399. and she

  1400. said oh

  1401. yeah she

  1402. stands up

  1403. I stand

  1404. up and

  1405. she looks

  1406. here at

  1407. this patch

  1408. of ground

  1409. about three

  1410. or four

  1411. foot wide

  1412. and she

  1413. says I

  1414. see two

  1415. right now

  1416. and I

  1417. said where

  1418. she says I'm

  1419. not going to

  1420. tell you

  1421. you find

  1422. them so

  1423. I looked

  1424. for about

  1425. ten minutes

  1426. I ain't

  1427. found nothing

  1428. right and

  1429. so I said

  1430. where are

  1431. they and

  1432. so she

  1433. bent over

  1434. and she

  1435. picked up

  1436. two four

  1437. leaf clovers

  1438. and gave

  1439. them to

  1440. me I

  1441. got another

  1442. friend friend

  1443. at Brushy

  1444. Creek he's

  1445. got a bag

  1446. full of

  1447. Indian

  1448. arrowheads

  1449. I've

  1450. occasionally

  1451. looked for

  1452. those from

  1453. places I'd

  1454. be places

  1455. battlefields or

  1456. something where

  1457. I think maybe

  1458. there would

  1459. be some I

  1460. don't have

  1461. one arrowhead

  1462. and you got

  1463. any arrowheads

  1464. here's somebody

  1465. got one

  1466. there in the

  1467. back

  1468. can I tell you

  1469. something

  1470. I am good at

  1471. finding one

  1472. thing

  1473. well several

  1474. things food

  1475. for one

  1476. but another

  1477. is I'm

  1478. pretty good at

  1479. finding deer

  1480. because my

  1481. wife and I

  1482. started years

  1483. ago in the

  1484. evenings we

  1485. had a place

  1486. down the

  1487. lake for

  1488. 13 years

  1489. and we

  1490. would get

  1491. out on

  1492. Friday nights

  1493. about 7

  1494. o'clock and

  1495. we'd ride to

  1496. 8 and I

  1497. knew I'd

  1498. found some

  1499. in one area

  1500. and I'd go

  1501. back to those

  1502. areas and I

  1503. found new

  1504. areas and we

  1505. got pretty

  1506. good at

  1507. finding deer

  1508. and so those

  1509. years we lived

  1510. the lake one

  1511. Saturday night

  1512. I found

  1513. Friday night

  1514. I found 43

  1515. deer okay

  1516. I was down

  1517. the lake this

  1518. last week

  1519. staying at a

  1520. friend's house

  1521. I found 50

  1522. deer one

  1523. night 15

  1524. of them were

  1525. bucks 8 of

  1526. them 8 points

  1527. or better big

  1528. deer right

  1529. you say that's a

1530. lot of it it is

  1531. my wife's good

  1532. at it she's as

1533. good at it as I

  1534. am you know

  1535. why because we

  1536. look for deer

  1537. just like that

  1538. one guy looks

  1539. for arrowheads

  1540. just like that

  1541. one guy has

  1542. spent a lot of

  1543. time looking for

  1544. clovers I'm going

  1545. to tell you a

  1546. truth in life you

  1547. can believe this

  1548. you find what

  1549. you're looking

  1550. for

  1551. did you know

  1552. that you will

  1553. find what you

  1554. really and truly

  1555. look for Jesus

  1556. said the same in

  1557. Matthew 7 7

  1558. about prayer

  1559. you will find

  1560. what you seek

  1561. for what you

  1562. look for

  1563. you know what I

  1564. believe about

  1565. Jesus you know

  1566. why he had so

  1567. many interruptions

  1568. because he was

  1569. willing to be

  1570. interrupted and he

  1571. was always looking

  1572. for people up in

  1573. trees he was

  1574. always looking to

  1575. that guy who

  1576. seemed out of

  1577. place he was

  1578. always looking to

  1579. that guy that

  1580. others thought

  1581. man that guy's a

  1582. little weird

  1583. that guy's been

  1584. cast aside by

  1585. society you know

  1586. where you'll find

  1587. them you'll find

  1588. them in school

  1589. cafeterias they're

  1590. the guy or gal

  1591. over there eating

  1592. by themselves

  1593. it's that guy at

  1594. work you'll look

  1595. at when you look

  1596. at him he looks

  1597. down she looks

  1598. down when you

  1599. look back up and

  1600. move on they look

  1601. back and they're

  1602. watching you they

  1603. isolate themselves

  1604. there are people

  1605. with needs in

  1606. their life and

  1607. they want somebody

  1608. to reach out to

  1609. them but they're

  1610. afraid to ask

  1611. I want you to

  1612. start looking for

  1613. people who are in

  1614. trees third thing

1615. I want you to learn

  1616. to use Jesus

  1617. approach to helping

  1618. people and I just

1619. got to tell you this

  1620. will be the hardest

1621. one for you to do

  1622. because it's so

  1623. foreign to our

  1624. thinking here's how

  1625. we want to help

  1626. people we see

  1627. somebody with a

  1628. need and we rush

1629. in and try to be

  1630. their savior let

  1631. me buy you

  1632. groceries let me

  1633. do this for you

1634. let me do that for

  1635. you come over here

1636. to this come to my

  1637. house come to my

  1638. cookout instead of

  1639. letting people know

  1640. man I need you

  1641. when you do for

  1642. somebody you know

  1643. what happens it

  1644. leaves them thinking

1645. boy he is such a

  1646. nice guy they think

  1647. better of you when

  1648. you help them but

  1649. when you enlist the

  1650. help of people you

  1651. know what always

  1652. happens I've seen

  1653. this being a pastor

  1654. so many times it

  1655. makes them feel

  1656. important it makes

  1657. them feel good about

  1658. themselves it makes

  1659. them feel needed it

1660. feels to them like he

1661. wants me to be a part

1662. of what he's about so

1663. when he says would you

1664. let me go home with

1665. you and you feed me

  1666. today he's thrilled to

  1667. death he's thrilled to

  1668. death because it's

  1669. Jesus coming to his

1670. house and he's going to

1671. be able to help Jesus

  1672. but in Jesus allowing

1673. him to do that for

1674. him by Jesus saying I

1675. really do want to be

  1676. involved to you not

  1677. just superficially it

  1678. opened the door for

  1679. Zacchaeus to receive

  1680. Christ into his heart

  1681. and finally here's the

1682. last thing I want you

  1683. to examine your

  1684. salvation I know a lot

  1685. of you are thinking

  1686. well preacher that's

  1687. pretty easy I've been a

  1688. member of first pickings

1689. for X number of years

  1690. I was baptized right

  1691. up in that baptismal

  1692. pool or I was

  1693. baptized out at this

  1694. place Lake Hartwell

  1695. somebody told me last

1696. night I was talking to

1697. and you can recall the

1698. date and the time and

  1699. everything about it but

  1700. that's not what I'm

1701. asking you did you join

1702. the church or did you

1703. sing in the choir or are

1704. you a deacon or have

  1705. you taught in school

1706. what I'm asking you to

1707. do is we're going to

1708. require a lot of soul

  1709. searching and

  1710. transparency but it's

  1711. in your best interest

1712. you do it and that's

1713. to ask yourself has a

  1714. change like occurred in

  1715. Zacchaeus ever occurred

1716. in me because I'm going

  1717. to tell you something

1718. when salvation comes to a

1719. house to us it always

  1720. leaves breathtaking changes

  1721. I don't mean that

  1722. everybody comes from a

  1723. moral background and

  1724. suddenly becomes moral

1725. but I'm going to tell

  1726. you something if you're

1727. the most moral person to

1728. ever live in pick in

  1729. South Carolina when

  1730. Jesus comes in your

  1731. eye it still radically

  1732. changes the most moral

  1733. of people it's an

  1734. inside change you've

  1735. heard me show my

  1736. testimony when I got

  1737. saved I was only 14

1738. years old so when a ton

1739. of weakness that I had to

1740. get rid of in my life

1741. and I'm going to tell

1742. you that day I received

  1743. Christ I became a

  1744. different person it was

  1745. as radical as the

  1746. changes in Zacchaeus life

  1747. I knew going forward I

1748. would sin against God and

  1749. I did and I have and I'm

1750. ashamed of that but I'm

  1751. going to tell you

  1752. something there's never

1753. been a moment in my life

1754. that I've ever thought for

  1755. a second that I wasn't

  1756. different than I was

  1757. before I received Christ

1758. he changed me he changed

  1759. Zacchaeus and that's what

1760. Jesus saw I'll tell you

  1761. ladies and gentlemen

1762. Jesus turns to the crowd

  1763. you've just witnessed

  1764. salvation salvation is

1765. cut this is a child of

1766. Abraham he has faith in

1767. God do you is there

  1768. anything about your life

  1769. that is just radically

  1770. changing people and it

  1771. doesn't even matter what

1772. other people do you know

  1773. that change has occurred

1774. you know if not I want to

  1775. tell you something you

1776. ought to really be talking

  1777. to God about your

  1778. salvation because the

  1779. older I get the more I'm

  1780. convinced when Jesus

  1781. comes into a man or a

  1782. woman's life a young

  1783. person's life it's not

  1784. just a handshake and a

1785. fill out card and a dunk

  1786. in a pool it leaves a

  1787. lasting effect you think

  1788. differently your heart's

  1789. different you're different

1790. because God now lives in

  1791. you let's pray Lord I

1792. pray you would convict men

1793. and women today who may be

  1794. delusional of their

  1795. salvation I would not

  1796. cause anyone Lord

1797. purposefully to doubt for a

1798. moment that they know you

1799. if they really know you

1800. but if they have been duped

  1801. into believing they have

1802. been saved when they have

1803. not been saved when they

  1804. just Lord embraced an

  1805. idea but they didn't

1806. embrace you I pray oh

  1807. God that you'd convict

1808. them and bring them to

  1809. the stark realization

1810. they need you and they

1811. can find you this day

  1812. Lord you're just as

  1813. available to anyone in

1814. this room as you were to

1815. Zacchaeus so if there are

1816. men and women who turn in

1817. these next few moments and

1818. they cry out to you and

1819. say God save me I pray you

1820. do that I know you will

  1821. hear their prayer Lord

1822. save them today and for

1823. those of us who have been

  1824. changed and we've been

  1825. transformed and we know

1826. that help us to make your

1827. agenda our agenda to not

1828. be out there just doing our

1829. thing but to make people

1830. sinners our agenda in life

1831. to bring them to faith in

1832. Christ have your will and

1833. way in this service we ask

1834. it in your name the

  1835. instrument
