  1. Have your Bibles turned with me this morning to Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  2. This morning we come to the third in this series of sermons on the enemy of prayer.

  3. And this morning, if I was giving this enemy a name, I would call it busyness.

  4. Not business, but busyness.

  5. Or misplaced priorities.

  6. The doctor that I've had for 30 years is a friend of mine, was a neighbor for 11 of those years.

  7. And like most of the doctors I go to, you go to his office, you sit there for 4, 5, 6, 7 minutes, 10 at the most.

  8. They call you back.

  9. Within another 5 or 6 minutes, he sees you and you're on your way.

  10. But have you ever been to a doctor's office?

  11. Because recently we've had this experience in our household.

  12. My wife had to see this specialist.

  13. And we've been there about 6 times.

  14. And you think it might be that way one time, but it's been that way every 6 times.

  15. You go in, they tell you to come 15 minutes early.

  16. And you get there and they take care of that in about 2 minutes.

  17. So you sit there about 13 minutes waiting for your actual appointment time.

  18. And then they let you wait another 45 minutes or an hour.

  19. And then they carry you back to this little room and say the doctor will be right in.

  20. Which means he's going to be there in about 40, 45 minutes more.

  21. And you spend about 2 1⁄2, 3 hours at the doctor's office.

  22. Now, I'm not on doctors this morning because that's the exception rather than the rule.

  23. But we probably all had that kind of experience at some point in our life.

  24. And they'll come out.

  25. If you say anything about it, you know what they're going to tell you.

  26. We had some emergencies today.

  27. But you've been there five days in a row and every day is an emergency.

  28. So after a while, that emergency is not really an emergency.

  29. It's just you're not planning for the emergency, right, that you know is already going to happen.

  30. And what really has happened is they've overbooked those appointments.

  31. And we all know that, right?

  32. That's yes and no.

  33. Yeah, we all get it.

  34. We know they've overbooked that.

  35. And so it irritates you.

  36. But let me just warn you about something.

  37. Before you get too hot and bothered with a doctor or that kind of office, whatever it is, it's something we all do.

  38. You do know that, right?

  39. We all have a tendency to overbook.

  40. And the busier, the more active a lifestyle you have, the more apt you are to overbook.

  41. For instance, at work, how many of you right now have got stuff on your calendar that you just say, I can't possibly get all that done, right?

  42. But you go ahead and agree to do it anyway because they ask you to do it.

  43. And so you put it on your calendar of to-do things.

  44. Or socially, you accept this invitation.

  45. Somebody says, would you do such and such?

  46. And you say, oh, I'd love to.

  47. And on the inside, you're going, I can't do that.

  48. I don't have time.

  49. But you do it anyway, right?

  50. And so you overbook that slot.

  51. We do it with our families.

  52. How many of you are grandparents in this room?

  53. Right, a lot of you.

  54. You'll say, I'll be glad to keep the child, right?

  55. But you meant like one day out of seven.

  56. And they're thinking five days out of seven, right?

  57. And so after a while, you just think, man, I don't have time to do anything.

  58. Now, I know because you're so spiritual minded and all that this would never happen here at First Baptist Church Pickens.

  59. But have any of you ever overbooked your church calendar?

  60. You ever find yourself saying yes to this committee and yes to that committee?

  61. And you teach Sunday school and you're a deacon and you're on this committee and that committee.

  62. And you're singing the choir and you're cutting the grass and you're cleaning the bathroom.

  63. And I could just go on and on and on, right?

  64. They ask you to serve on the bereavement committee and they ask you to serve on the benevolent committee.

  65. And so you're just doing all these things and you meet yourself going and coming.

  66. Have you ever been tempted to think this when a guy stands up here like me and he preaches on prayer?

  67. And you say, preacher, I wish you'd get off my back.

  68. I'm going to beat 90 miles an hour.

  69. I just don't.

  70. You ready for this?

  71. Have time to pray.

  72. I'd like to pray.

  73. But when would I get around to that?

  74. You got me running, doing all these things for the church.

  75. And so, to be honest, I really just don't have time to pray.

  76. Well, I want you to look at this story.

  77. Great, great, great story.

  78. Luke chapter 10, verse 38.

    Luke 10:38

  79. While they were traveling, that's Jesus and his disciples,

  80. he entered a village, we know to be Bethany,

  81. and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

  82. Now, let me give you the inside track.

  83. You go back and you read the context of this

  84. and you understand Jesus has just come off a missionary campaign.

  85. He sent his disciples out.

  86. They've come back.

  87. They're dead tired.

  88. Another passage tells us Jesus wants to get away.

  89. He tells his disciples, let's go to a remote area.

  90. They try going to the remote area,

  91. but when they get there, as I preached a few weeks ago,

  92. there are already people there who have anticipated

  93. they're going to this remote location.

  94. So, Jesus doesn't get any rest.

  95. Finally, he gets to Bethany.

  96. These are three of his dearest social friends,

  97. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.

  98. We read a couple of stories in the scripture about them.

  99. On this occasion, Jesus gets to town.

  100. Martha sees him apparently and says,

  101. Jesus, so good to see.

  102. They're tired.

  103. They're exhausted.

  104. They've been on the road.

  105. Probably hadn't had a good meal in a long, long time.

  106. And she says, I want you to come to our house.

  107. Well, you've been to people's houses

  108. and then you've been to people's houses

  109. where they really have the gift of hospitality, right?

  110. And you just are able to let your hair down.

  111. You're able to relax.

  112. You're able to have a good time.

  113. And it's just a wonderful, wonderful experience.

  114. I believe it was this kind of experience

  115. for Jesus in Bethany at Martha's house.

  116. He knew her.

  117. He was, I think, excited about going to her house.

  118. So I want to tell you something.

  119. Martha has done a good thing.

  120. Jesus, come home.

  121. Now, let's, this is really important.

  122. Ask yourself, what is it she's wanting to do

  123. in this moment when she sees Jesus

  124. and invites him to her house?

  125. Is she thinking, I'm wanting him to go away

  126. thinking I am the new Martha Stewart?

  127. No.

  128. Is she thinking, I'm going to impress him

  129. because this is going to be like a French restaurant,

  130. five-star restaurant?

  131. No.

  132. Is she thinking, I want to impress him

  133. with how well I keep my house?

  134. No.

  135. She's got one thing in her mind.

  136. I'm doing something good for Jesus.

  137. You don't look at his face.

  138. He's tired.

  139. He's wore out.

  140. We're having him in the disciples.

  141. It's going to be a great time.

  142. We're going to have a wonderful time

  143. just seeing Jesus.

  144. That's mostly what she's got in the back of her mind.

  145. Doing something good for Jesus.

  146. Having a wonderful time.

  147. You've had people like that in your life

  148. who just said, look, I want you to come to the house

  149. and you get there, have a great time.

  150. A few weeks ago, the Whitworths here in your church

  151. invited me and my wife to come over.

  152. They had a few of their friends, some family.

  153. Have a huge table.

  154. Let me tell you something.

  155. If you ever get a chance to go to Vic

  156. and Sharon Whitworth's home, go.

  157. That gal can put out a spread, right?

  158. And they're so hospitable and warm and friendly.

  159. We just had a great, wonderful time.

  160. So that's what Jesus is looking forward to.

  161. He's looking forward to going to like the Whitworth's house, okay?

  162. Look at next verse, verse 39.

  163. She had a sister named Mary

  164. who also sat at the Lord's feet

  165. and was listening to what he said.

  166. Now here's Mary.

  167. Mary, they're flesh and blood brothers and sisters,

  168. Lazarus, Mary, and Martha.

  169. Same gene pool,

  170. but she couldn't be any more different than Martha

  171. if she tried.

  172. How many of you got people like that in your family?

  173. You got two kids, a boy and a girl,

  174. two girls, two boys, multiple children.

  175. One's an A and the other's a Z, right?

  176. I've got a daughter who's a fashionista.

  177. I mean, she loves clothes.

  178. I got a boy that owns about three pair of pants.

  179. I mean, he goes to barber about once a year

  180. if he needs to or not, long hair, beard.

  181. He's outdoorsman, loves to hunt in the woods.

  182. That's just who he is.

  183. They couldn't be more different.

  184. Both have loving hearts, both good people,

  185. just different people all together.

  186. Things he cares about, she don't give a nickel about.

  187. Things she cares about, he don't give a nickel about, right?

  188. Well, Martha and Mary, or Mary, Martha and Mary,

  189. I should have said, are all together different.

  190. Martha is a housekeeper.

  191. She's a cook.

  192. Mary may do some of these things,

  193. but she's really a people person.

  194. And so when she sees Jesus,

  195. she's equally glad to see Jesus come into the house,

  196. but what she does is she just plops down there,

  197. as we say in our house.

  198. She plops down there,

  199. and she soaks up Jesus like a sponge.

  200. Now let me just ask you,

  201. who wouldn't?

  202. I mean, you've got the son of God in your house.

  203. You've got this guy who's doing miracles

  204. and teaching like no one's ever taught.

  205. And just, you look at him,

  206. you just say there's something special about him.

  207. And so she's able to ask him all those questions

  208. you've asked your pastor in the past,

  209. and he hasn't had an answer for you, right?

  210. You remember coming up to your pastor and said,

  211. pastor, I just want to know.

  212. And then he looks at you with a deer in the headlight look

  213. and says, you're going to have to wait

  214. until you get to heaven, right?

  215. Because I don't know.

  216. And he doesn't know.

  217. And he's just honest about it.

  218. Well, Jesus knows.

  219. And you've got him right here in your living room.

  220. And so you're asking, bombarding him with questions,

  221. and he's answering.

  222. And it's just a great time.

  223. And she's just having the ball just soaking up Jesus, right?

  224. Well, look at verse 40.

  225. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks.

  226. First sign of anything going wrong here.

  227. But Martha.

  228. In grammar, English grammar,

  229. that's considered a conjunction of contrast.

  230. Conjunctions are words that tie two ideas together.

  231. Here's idea A, Martha inviting Jesus to the home.

  232. Idea B, Mary sitting here soaking him up like sponge.

  233. The writer is tying these two ideas together,

  234. but he uses a conjunction, not and, but, but,

  235. which means there's a problem.

  236. There's some kind of conflict here, right?

  237. So he says, but Martha was distracted by her many tasks.

  238. That word distracted is a good word.

  239. It's a strong word.

  240. It paints a picture for us, right?

  241. Because every one of us, if you think about it,

  242. you know exactly what a distraction is.

  243. How many of you are one task at a time people?

  244. Can I see you?

  245. A lot of people are multi.

  246. I'm a one task at a time person.

  247. I mean, especially the older I get,

  248. I had better be a one task person, right?

  249. Because I can walk from this room to that room and get there,

  250. and I don't have a clue what I'm there for, right?

  251. Anything can distract me.

  252. I'm as ADD as they come, right?

  253. So Martha is trying to get this meal ready,

  254. set the table, put everything out there,

  255. got the roast in the oven.

  256. She's got her pie made.

  257. She's got to set the table, get the dishes on the table,

  258. and the forks in place, and the napkins,

  259. and the tea poured, and everything's going to be ready to go,

  260. and not to mention a hundred other things

  261. that she wishes were in place.

  262. Well, she gets distracted because every time she walks through,

  263. guess what she sees?

  264. There's Mary.

  265. Mary is not helping.

  266. Mary is sitting listening to Jesus.

  267. I wish somebody would let me listen to Jesus.

  268. I've got to do all this stuff

  269. while you sit there listening to Jesus.

  270. And so she's distracted by her many, many tasks.

  271. Now, I want to just warn you,

  272. people who have a lot of tasks who are doers,

  273. you have a bigger problem than this

  274. than people who know how to relax.

  275. I'm in that Martha category.

  276. I always got a lot going on.

  277. I always got a lot to do.

  278. I'm scurrying about.

  279. And I'll just tell you something about those of us

  280. who scurry about.

  281. When we scurry about, if we're honest about it,

  282. we want everybody else scurrying around with us, don't we?

  283. You ever seen that?

  284. I mean, you're getting this meal on the table.

  285. Have you ever walked by and seen your husband

  286. just sitting there with his hands behind his head,

  287. laid back, watching the ball game in the recliner?

  288. You don't want to say,

  289. hey, jerkwad, get up and come in and help me, right?

  290. I mean, you don't have feet.

  291. Especially when you walk by and they say,

  292. hey, if you get a chance,

  293. could you give me a glass of tea?

  294. You know?

  295. I'll get you a glass of tea.

  296. Right?

  297. And so Martha is distracted

  298. because she's got so many things going on.

  299. Look at verse 40, the middle of the verse.

  300. And she came up and asked,

  301. Lord, don't you care that my sister

  302. has left me to serve alone?

  303. Can you see Martha?

  304. Man, I can.

  305. I've been Martha before.

  306. I try to conceal it better than Martha,

  307. I think, did here.

  308. But I've been Martha before.

  309. Where you're just running around

  310. like a chicken with your head cut off

  311. and you look around and others in the room

  312. who you thought would be helping you

  313. aren't helping you

  314. and you keep dropping hands.

  315. I could use a hand here, you know?

  316. Boy, I'll get the meal on the table

  317. as soon as I can.

  318. And they're just not taking the hint.

  319. And so after a while,

  320. she comes up and says,

  321. Lord, don't you care that my sister

  322. has left me alone to serve?

  323. She's mad with Mary.

  324. But I want to let you in on something

  325. if you haven't ever thought about this before.

  326. Seems sacrilegious to say,

  327. but it's true.

  328. She's mad with Jesus too.

  329. Because Jesus is occupying Mary

  330. and Mary is listening to Jesus

  331. and she in her mind thinks,

  332. why don't you tell her to come help me?

  333. Do you not care?

  334. Do you not see?

  335. I'm just busy as a beaver

  336. and I'm doing all these things

  337. and Mary just keeps sitting there.

  338. Do you not care?

  339. Well, look at the very next part of that verse,

  340. verse 40c.

  341. So tell her to give me a hand.

  342. Now here's Ralph Carter's translation of that, right?

  343. You won't find this in the Greek,

  344. but this is Ralph Carter.

  345. You know what she's saying?

  346. Tell her to get off her backside

  347. and come help me.

  348. When she says give a hand,

  349. what she's wanting her to do

  350. is to get up and get moving

  351. and come to her aid

  352. and assist her in preparing for this meal.

  353. So she's thinking to herself,

  354. Jesus, she'd listen to you.

  355. You can fix this.

  356. All you gotta do is give the word,

  357. hey, Mary, Martha's really busy here

  358. and if you'd go help her,

  359. it'd help her out.

  360. But notice Jesus' response,

  361. verse 41.

  362. The Lord answered her

  363. with just two words, ready?

  364. Martha, Martha.

  365. Now, I can picture my mom saying that to me.

  366. I don't know about you.

  367. And I gotta figure,

  368. and I know exactly how Jesus said it.

  369. He said it probably like my mom would have said it.

  370. He turns around.

  371. He's involved in a great spiritual conversation with Mary.

  372. They're having a great time of it.

  373. And he hears Martha,

  374. and she's taking off the gloves.

  375. Why don't you tell her to come give me a hand?

  376. And he turns and he looks at her

  377. and probably folds his arms the way my mama used to.

  378. And he says,

  379. Martha, Martha.

  380. Right?

  381. When they say your name twice,

  382. that's not a good thing.

  383. You remember what that was like at home?

  384. If they say it one time,

  385. okay, they want your attention.

  386. But when they put it together twice,

  387. not a good thing.

  388. Martha, Martha.

  389. In other words,

  390. Martha, you are a piece of work.

  391. And then he says,

  392. you are worried and upset about many things.

  393. In other words,

  394. you're in a tizzy over so many things.

  395. And busy people see lots of things to do,

  396. don't they?

  397. Have you ever noticed how

  398. when you invite somebody over,

  399. it starts,

  400. remember what we said about Martha in the beginning?

  401. What she wanna do?

  402. She wants to have Jesus come to her house

  403. and just show him a good time.

  404. But this has turned into something else.

  405. It's taken on a life of its own.

  406. Have you ever done that?

  407. Ever had a good intention

  408. about somebody in your home?

  409. You're just gonna have a good meal.

  410. You're just gonna have a good time.

  411. But somebody needs to polish the furniture.

  412. Somebody needs to vacuum the floor.

  413. Somebody needs to wax the floor.

  414. Somebody needs to wash the windows.

  415. Somebody needs to change the sheets

  416. in there in the bedroom.

  417. You think,

  418. they're not gonna go lay down on that bed.

  419. You know?

  420. But we need to do those things.

  421. We need to clean the toilet back there.

  422. Right?

  423. We need to do all those.

  424. Cut the grass.

  425. Get the weeds out of the flowers.

  426. And folk are like that.

  427. You see lots and lots and lots of things to do.

  428. Here's the sad part.

  429. Martha lost sight of her initial priorities.

  430. She wanted to show Jesus kindness.

  431. Get this now.

  432. But now she's insulting him.

  433. And what was important became secondary.

  434. And what wasn't even on the radar

  435. has become primary.

  436. You get where I'm going with this?

  437. In our spiritual lives,

  438. a lot of times,

  439. we get to hurrying about

  440. and so busy and doing things

  441. that those things that at one time

  442. we didn't even know were on the radar,

  443. they become primary.

  444. And those things

  445. that at one time were primary to us,

  446. they become secondary

  447. and even further removed than that.

  448. I want you to think back to the day

  449. that you invited Christ into your heart and life.

  450. When you first established a relationship with God,

  451. did committee work have anything to do with that at all?

  452. Was that on your agenda?

  453. Did you think about being elected

  454. to this office or that office?

  455. Did you think about how good

  456. the choir at First Baptist Pickens sang?

  457. Or how good the sermon was?

  458. When you first got right with Christ,

  459. I'm going to tell you something.

  460. Everybody in this room

  461. who's had that experience,

  462. you know the only thing that really mattered

  463. was your relationship with God.

  464. You just wanted to be right with God.

  465. Period.

  466. You just wanted to hear from God

  467. and know God's will for your life

  468. and to be able to communicate with God.

  469. And that was primary

  470. and that was so clear

  471. you could see it every day.

  472. But then as time passed,

  473. things kind of got cluttered

  474. because this came into your life

  475. and that came into your life

  476. and this came into your life.

  477. And after a while,

  478. you're running like a chicken

  479. with your head cut off

  480. and you don't have time even to pray.

  481. We spend way too much time

  482. rearranging the chairs

  483. on the deck of the Titanic.

  484. Do you understand what I'm saying by that?

  485. That ship's hit the iceberg.

  486. It's going down.

  487. Matter of minutes.

  488. We're still trying feverishly

  489. to get those chairs

  490. in the right place.

  491. I was on the personnel committee

  492. for a Baptist association

  493. many, many years ago

  494. when I first went in ministry.

  495. I was the young guy on the committee

  496. and we met at the associational office.

  497. We were going to evaluate the employees,

  498. talk about how they're doing

  499. in their job performance.

  500. So we get with the DOM,

  501. the director of missions,

  502. and we say to him,

  503. tell us about your work.

  504. Tell us what has happened

  505. in the last year.

  506. Now, I was excited about it.

  507. First year on the personnel committee,

  508. young preacher.

  509. I think he's going to tell us

  510. about mission efforts.

  511. He's going to tell us about people

  512. he's witnessed to,

  513. people he's brought into the church.

  514. He's going to tell us about pastors

  515. who he's helped

  516. who are having difficult times,

  517. maybe their marriage is in trouble,

  518. and he's helped rescue them.

  519. Or he's going to tell us about churches

  520. that are having problems

  521. and how he's intervened

  522. and giving them solutions

  523. and answers and suggestions,

  524. and those congregations

  525. are stronger today.

  526. You know what he did?

  527. You're not going to believe

  528. what I'm going to tell you.

  529. I hope you won't believe

  530. what I'm going to tell you.

  531. But this is exactly what he did.

  532. Now, I've changed the numbers

  533. because I can't remember the numbers,

  534. but the categories

  535. are exactly as he said them.

  536. He pulls out his long sheet of paper

  537. from his desk,

  538. and this is what he said.

  539. Well, it's kind of like this.

  540. This year, I was involved

  541. in 15,846 phone calls.

  542. 2,139 pieces of mail

  543. were received into our office.

  544. 1,282 pieces of mail

  545. were sent out by our office.

  546. We had 139 meetings

  547. here in this building

  548. at our office.

  549. I had 57 meetings,

  550. personal encounters

  551. with pastors

  552. across the association,

  553. and that was his report.

  554. And you know what I thought

  555. when I sat there

  556. as a 28, 29-year-old guy?

  557. Who has the time

  558. to count how many times

  559. you answer the phone?

  560. Who keeps a list of that?

  561. Who says,

  562. well, today,

  563. that's six more pieces of mail.

  564. Who says,

  565. every time they go

  566. to meet a pastor,

  567. okay, I mail that pastor.

  568. Put that one down.

  569. You see what had happened?

  570. The little things,

  571. the meaningless things

  572. had become the primary thing,

  573. and the primary thing

  574. was lost.

  575. And I'm fearful

  576. in our spiritual lives.

  577. That's what many of us

  578. do as well.

  579. Look at verse 42,

  580. and I close.

  581. Mary has made

  582. the right choice,

  583. and it will not be

  584. taken away from her.

  585. Here's what Jesus is saying.

  586. No, Martha,

  587. I won't ask Mary

  588. to stop what she's doing

  589. to come help you,

  590. because what could be

  591. more important

  592. than what Mary

  593. is doing right here?

  594. She's sitting,

  595. she's having conversation

  596. with me,

  597. she's given me

  598. a wonderful opportunity

  599. to share with her

  600. the things of the kingdom.

  601. We're having fellowship.

  602. It's just great.

  603. And what Mary is doing

  604. is going to pay

  605. lasting benefits.

  606. She's creating memories

  607. that are going to last her

  608. a lifetime,

  609. and she would.

  610. Can you imagine

  611. any of us in this room,

  612. you have a chance

  613. to sit and personally

  614. talk with Jesus.

  615. He's going to be

  616. crucified later on,

  617. arise,

  618. return to heaven,

  619. and you're going to have

  620. that memory

  621. in your mind and heart.

  622. I talked with Jesus.

  623. We spoke about this

  624. and this

  625. and this

  626. and this.

  627. Five years later,

  628. somebody says,

  629. you remember when

  630. Jesus came to Bethany?

  631. Uh-huh.

  632. What was it

  633. Martha cooked

  634. that day?

  635. I mean,

  636. do you remember

  637. that pie we had?

  638. No.

  639. Do you remember

  640. how clean

  641. the house was?

  642. Uh-uh.

  643. But I remember

  644. that conversation

  645. I had with Jesus.

  646. I remember

  647. that thing

  648. he said.

  649. And that made

  650. all the difference

  651. in the world.

  652. Let me ask you,

  653. in all the stuff

  654. you're doing

  655. in your spiritual life,

  656. so-called spiritual life,

  657. how much of it

  658. is communion

  659. actually with God?

  660. And how much of it

  661. is church work

  662. versus the work

  663. of the church?

  664. Because I hope you know

  665. there's a difference

  666. in those two things.

  667. You're looking at somebody

  668. who was in ministry,

  669. has been in ministry,

  670. now 50 years.

  671. And somewhere

  672. along the way,

  673. I recognized

  674. a good while back,

  675. there's a huge difference

  676. in church work

  677. and the work

  678. of the church.

  679. The work of the church

  680. will run you down,

  681. and church work

  682. will invigorate you,

  683. or the work of the church

  684. will invigorate you.

  685. But church work,

  686. it's pretty tiring,

  687. it's pretty boring.

  688. It's draining.

  689. It doesn't charge

  690. your battery.

  691. My mom died

  692. June the 1st,

  693. 2014.

  694. We were real tight.

  695. She was 80 years old.

  696. Those last three or four years,

  697. I'd go to her house.

  698. I'd go about once a week

  699. to see her.

  700. My dad's still living.

  701. I'd go see my dad's

  702. Energizer money.

  703. He was up,

  704. he could get around.

  705. But my mom had become

  706. less and less mobile.

  707. Now she could walk,

  708. she could get around,

  709. we could go places.

  710. But she'd just gotten

  711. to that point in life

  712. where she preferred to sit

  713. rather than go and do.

  714. I've always been a person

  715. who didn't know how to relax

  716. and just always wanted

  717. to be on the go.

  718. And so I'd go to her house

  719. and I'd think,

  720. it'd be good for her

  721. if I could get her up

  722. out of the house.

  723. And I'd say,

  724. Mama,

  725. we all called her Ma,

  726. my kids and all.

  727. And I said,

  728. Ma,

  729. why don't we go do

  730. such and such?

  731. I heard about this thing

  732. going over there

  733. in Pumpkin Town

  734. or I heard about this thing

  735. over in Greenwood.

  736. Why don't we get in the car

  737. and I'll run you over there

  738. and we'll see you

  739. and we'll have a big time.

  740. And we would have had

  741. a big time.

  742. And about 95% of the time,

  743. here's what she'd say,

  744. son,

  745. that sounds like

  746. it'd be a lot of fun.

  747. But you know what

  748. I really like to do?

  749. No,

  750. Mom,

  751. what's that?

  752. I always knew

  753. what she was going to say.

  754. Why don't we just sit

  755. and talk?

  756. I'm sorry.

  757. I'm sorry.

  758. I don't know why

  759. I'm so emotional.

  760. She,

  761. about six months

  762. before she died,

  763. she got multiple myeloma.

  764. She went down real quick.

  765. And I'd see her

  766. several times a week

  767. and we'd just sit

  768. and we'd just talk.

  769. Well,

  770. you know,

  771. I'm not a singer

  772. like Georgia

  773. and Jimmy,

  774. Brian.

  775. But a couple times

  776. I'd say,

  777. Mom,

  778. why don't me and you sing?

  779. And we'd sing

  780. his eyes on a sparrow.

  781. We'd just have

  782. a good time.

  783. We went a lot of places

  784. in our lifetime

  785. and I want to tell you something.

  786. Those conversations

  787. are the thing

  788. that I remember

  789. that last six months

  790. talking with her,

  791. sitting there

  792. having fellowship with her.

  793. And I just wondered

  794. so many times

  795. as a preacher

  796. and a pastor,

  797. we come to church

  798. and we want

  799. a huge crowd

  800. and it's good

  801. to have a big crowd

  802. and all,

  803. but I just wonder

  804. at times

  805. if God says,

  806. hey,

  807. hey,

  808. hey,

  809. hey,

  810. hey,

  811. hey,

  812. hey,

  813. hey,

  814. hey,

  815. hey,

  816. hey,

  817. talk to me.

  818. Just talk to me.

  819. Choir's good,

  820. but would you talk to me?

  821. Preaching's okay,

  822. but would you talk to me?

  823. Hey,

  824. you there around

  825. that conference table

  826. having that meeting,

  827. how about talk to me?

  828. How about talk to me?

  829. Let's bow in prayer.

  830. Don't leave church today

  831. without talking to God.

  832. I'm not even

  833. going to ask you to stand.

  834. I want it to be

  835. more personal than that.

  836. If you want to come

  837. and kneel here at the altar,

  838. you do that.

  839. I welcome you to come.

  840. Ryan's going to sing

  841. the hymn of invitation,

  842. but whether you come

  843. or whether you sit there

  844. in the pew,

  845. talk to him.

  846. Right now,

  847. just talk to him.

  848. Just have a conversation

  849. with him.

  850. Would you do that

  851. while he sings?
