  1. I want to begin a three-part series today that I'm going to call,

  2. What Kind of Church Do We Want to Be?

  3. And that's what it focuses on.

  4. What kind of church do we want to be going forward?

  5. When you lose a pastor, especially a good pastor,

  6. and one that's been there a long time, one of the caliber of Fred Stone,

  7. I know we'd be just lying to ourselves to tell ourselves it doesn't make us real nervous, right?

  8. We get an anxious feeling because what's the next guy coming in going to be like?

  9. And where is he going to take us?

  10. And how is the church going to change?

  11. And what's it going to look like?

  12. And all those kind of things.

  13. And a lot of times we worry about, well, who's going to take care of this

  14. or who's going to take care of that?

  15. And how are things going to fall in place in the absence of a pastor?

  16. Because you realize I'm pretty much just a preacher, right?

  17. I live over in Greer, and I'm here one day a week.

  18. And Brian and the other staff members, Jeff and others,

  19. are carrying the load for the pastoral ministry.

  20. But one of the things that happens when pastors leave, it's a good thing.

  21. It causes those who are in secondary roles to pick up their game.

  22. I mean, it means that deacons have got to pick up their game.

  23. It means the Sunday school teachers have got to pick up their game

  24. because a lot of times when a guy's been there a long time,

  25. we just kind of get used to that guy kind of carrying the ball and doing everything, right?

  26. And so one of the things that happens is it makes people step up.

  27. And I hope you're doing that today,

  28. that you're not just leaving to the Sunday school teachers,

  29. to the deacons, to the staff that you're saying,

  30. boy, what can I do to advance the cause of the kingdom of Christ

  31. here at First Baptist Church of Pickens?

  32. There's another thing, too, though, that happens.

  33. Churches begin to wonder, well, where are we going from here?

  34. And what kind of church do we want to be?

  35. And I want to tell you, whether you've lost a pastor or you have a pastor,

  36. that's always a good question from time to time to ask yourself,

  37. what do we want to be as a church?

  38. So I've taken it upon myself.

  39. I didn't consult with the deacons, the personnel committee, or even the staff.

  40. I've taken it upon myself.

  41. I've invited in two experts to give us some advice about where do we go from here.

  42. And I know some of you are thinking, boy, that guy has overshot the runway now.

  43. I mean, how did he go spend money?

  44. It's not going to cost you a thing, so don't get all anxious and all worried and fretful.

  45. The two I'm inviting in are the Apostle Paul,

  46. who would know more how to start a church

  47. and what a church ought to look like than the Apostle Paul.

  48. And the other is James, the first pastor of the church of Jerusalem.

  49. So we're going to see what these two guys have got to say over the next three weeks

  50. about what kind of church should we be.

  51. This is not an all-inclusive message.

  52. It's not everything.

  53. This whole series won't be all-inclusive

  54. about here's everything you need to be as a church.

  55. But I'm going to mention just three things

  56. that I think are right toward the top

  57. of what we ought to be as a church.

  58. So if you have your Bibles, turn with me to 1 Thessalonians 3.

  59. 1 Thessalonians 3.

  60. And let me just set up this passage for you

  61. so you'll understand what we're about to read.

  62. Paul is on his second missionary journey.

  63. Okay?

  64. He's taking his second missionary journey.

  65. He's going to the city of Philippi.

  66. You know, the book of Philippians was written to that church in Philippi.

  67. You read about it in the book of Acts.

  68. When he gets to Philippi, a lot of people come on board

  69. and they trust Christ as Savior.

  70. But it's not without great suffering on Paul's part.

  71. He's beaten, put in jail.

  72. Even there, he wins a Philippian jailer and his family to Christ.

  73. But ultimately, he has to flee because of persecution.

  74. When he leaves there, he goes to another neighboring town

  75. by the name of Thessalonica.

  76. And there in Thessalonica on the Sabbath,

  77. the Bible says he goes and he preaches.

  78. And he does that three consecutive Sabbaths,

  79. three consecutive Saturdays.

  80. He's there in the Sabbath.

  81. He's there in the synagogue.

  82. And he's preaching the Word of God.

  83. He's giving them the gospel of the Lord Jesus.

  84. And many people hear that and they believe and become Christians.

  85. He develops in a short period of time

  86. a real strong relationship with these people.

  87. Only there are three weeks.

  88. They come to him after the third week and they say,

  89. Paul, for your safety, you've got to get out of Dodge.

  90. And so he takes the next flat out

  91. and he's on his way to another place, right?

  92. At their insistence, he leaves.

  93. He gets to the next spot, though,

  94. and he still has these Thessalonians on his mind.

  95. And he's wondering,

  96. what's become of these young believers

  97. who had come into the church?

  98. They don't have a pastor.

  99. What are they going to do?

  100. How are they going to make it?

  101. How are they going to survive?

  102. And so he's wondering about their spiritual future.

  103. And so he wants to go back.

  104. And he even tries to go back.

  105. But the words he uses in 1 Thessalonians are these.

  106. Satan hinders him in going.

  107. He tries numerous times,

  108. but every time Satan blocked his ability to go back.

  109. So I want you to read in chapter 3 and verse 1 with me

  110. what he now does.

  111. Look at chapter 3 and verse 1.

  112. Therefore, when we could no longer stand it,

  113. we thought it was better to be left alone in Athens.

  114. Now you understand,

  115. persecution is always not far away from the door of Paul.

  116. That's what he means when he says,

  117. I thought even though it was dangerous,

  118. it'd be better to be left alone.

  119. And he sends Timothy back to get a report

  120. on what's happening with these people in Thessalonica.

  121. Look at verse 5.

  122. For this reason, when I could stand it no longer,

  123. I also sent to find out about your faith,

  124. fearing that the tempter had tempted you

  125. and that our labor might be for nothing.

  126. Now what's he got in mind?

  127. What's he fearful of?

  128. Why is he so anxious?

  129. You would readily understand without me even telling you

  130. why he would be anxious in the circumstances I've outlined.

  131. These are young believers.

  132. He's done everything he can in the three weeks

  133. to disciple them and give them the information that they need.

  134. But they were like us.

  135. Do you always get things right the first time?

  136. Do you ever have to be reminded of anything?

  137. And so Paul has said to them some things,

  138. even about the second coming of Jesus,

  139. they kind of get mixed up about.

  140. We're going to see that at a later time.

  141. But they were confused about some things.

  142. And so he worries that in the absence of somebody

  143. to preach the scripture to them

  144. and to preach the truth to them,

  145. they're going to just fall apart.

  146. That's a natural concern, right?

  147. So what does he do?

  148. He sends Timothy back to check on them.

  149. Look, if you will, at chapter 3 and verse 6,

  150. and we read the report of Timothy from 6 through 10.

  151. Now, Timothy has come to us from you

  152. and brought us good news about your faith and love.

  153. So look up for a minute.

  154. Not bad news.

  155. Timothy gets back and says,

  156. Paul, relax.

  157. It's good.

  158. I mean, they're growing in love.

  159. They're growing in faith.

  160. It's good.

  161. And that you always have good memories of us

  162. wanting to see us as also we want to see you.

  163. They miss you as bad as you miss them.

  164. Therefore, brothers,

  165. in all our distress and persecution,

  166. we were encouraged about you through your faith.

  167. For now we live if you stand firm in the Lord.

  168. How can we thank God for you

  169. in return for all the joy we experience

  170. because of you before our God?

  171. As we pray earnestly night and day

  172. to see you face to face

  173. and to complete what is lacking in your faith.

  174. Boy, I cannot wait to get back with you

  175. and all the things that you need bolstering up in.

  176. I'm going to do that.

  177. I can't wait for that day.

  178. I'm praying for that day.

  179. I anticipate that day.

  180. And then he gives them this prayer.

  181. And let me just tell you before we read it,

  182. this is going to be our focus for the next three sermons.

  183. Just these three verses, okay?

  184. We'll bring in some other verses,

  185. but these are the primary verses we're going to look at.

  186. And it's a prayer.

  187. And because we're reading it this morning, guess what?

  188. It's a written prayer.

  189. It's one he prayed, no doubt, verbally,

  190. but it's a written prayer.

  191. Now, I just want to help you

  192. where you're thinking about that for a minute.

  193. When I was a kid coming along,

  194. I'm 69 years old.

  195. When I was a kid,

  196. and I don't think this mentality prevails today,

  197. but when I was a kid,

  198. if you grew up in a conservative church,

  199. the conservative church had a kind of way

  200. of looking down at prayers that were read.

  201. Do you all remember that?

  202. I can remember hearing people say,

  203. well, you know, they just read that prayer.

  204. They didn't mean it.

  205. It wasn't from the heart.

  206. They read that.

  207. How many of you ever wrote a love letter?

  208. Anybody here?

  209. None of you are romantic at all.

  210. You all have written love letters, right?

  211. You started about third grade, right?

  212. Sent that little note,

  213. you love me if you ask,

  214. check the box, you know?

  215. Did you mean what you wrote?

  216. Of course you did, right?

  217. So that's just foggy thinking to think

  218. because I write something,

  219. and I don't mean it, you know?

  220. That's a foolish notion.

  221. In fact, what it reflects to me is this.

  222. You've had a chance to think about it.

  223. And I don't know about you,

  224. when I start writing things,

  225. sometimes I'll write it,

  226. and I think, yeah, that's not it,

  227. and I'll scratch it out,

  228. or I'll tear it up,

  229. and I'll start over, right?

  230. We hit the delete key,

  231. and we do it again.

  232. And so Paul has the opportunity to think,

  233. what am I going to say to these Thessalonians?

  234. What is the prayer I really want to pray

  235. for these Thessalonians?

  236. This is a written prayer,

  237. and so I've got to tell you,

  238. to me it must be really important.

  239. It's what he thought about

  240. and concluded.

  241. It's what I want to say.

  242. So look at verse 11.

  243. Now may our God and Father Himself

  244. and our Lord Jesus

  245. direct our way to you.

  246. Let me come to you

  247. as I've said I want to

  248. and as you want me to.

  249. Verse 12, and here's the heart of it.

  250. And may the Lord cause you to increase.

  251. What does it mean to increase?

  252. Get more, right?

  253. And may the Lord cause you to increase

  254. and overflow.

  255. You know what it is to overflow?

  256. You start pouring something into a container

  257. and you get to the top

  258. and it just spills over.

  259. There's more than even you can anticipate.

  260. And may the Lord cause you to increase

  261. and overflow with love

  262. one for another.

  263. Now, a lot of you say,

  264. well preacher, that's us here at First Pickens.

  265. We got it down, right?

  266. We are having a love fest.

  267. We just love each other.

  268. Boy, we love one another.

  269. We love everybody whose name is on our roll, right?

  270. We just love, love, love, love, love each other.

  271. We're good to go.

  272. Boy, wait a second.

  273. That's not where he ends.

  274. He says,

  275. and for everyone

  276. just as we also do for you.

  277. Hmm.

  278. Okay, we'll do that.

  279. That would mean we would love

  280. the First Presbyterian Church, right?

  281. We're okay with that.

  282. Presbyterians are good people.

  283. We'll okay love the Methodist people

  284. behind us here, right?

  285. We'll love them too.

  286. We'll love the Pentecostals

  287. and the Church of God.

  288. Okay, we're good.

  289. We'll love the Mormons.

  290. We'll love Jehovah's Witness.

  291. We'll love the Charismatics.

  292. We'll love the Catholics.

  293. We'll even love the Jews.

  294. We'll love the Muslims.

  295. We'll love the Mormons.

  296. We'll love the Jehovah's Witnesses.

  297. We'll love the folks who frequent the bars

  298. and never come to church.

  299. We'll love those who stand in the streets

  300. and say,

  301. I'm an atheist

  302. and I hate your God

  303. and don't even believe He exists.

  304. You see,

  305. everybody's everybody.

  306. That includes

  307. people from Pickens,

  308. right?

  309. I don't know what you call

  310. people from Pickens.

  311. I said in the first

  312. service,

  313. the first service,

  314. Picanites,

  315. and then Tim came and said,

  316. well,

  317. actually they're Pekingese.

  318. It means you love

  319. all the people from Pickens

  320. who grew up in Pickens.

  321. They're born and bred here.

  322. It also means you love

  323. those from out of town.

  324. You love them from Greenville,

  325. from Greer,

  326. from Travers Rest,

  327. and from Anderson,

  328. and from North Carolina,

  329. and from Virginia,

  330. and yes,

  331. Yankees.

  332. You love even Yankees.

  333. And that's what he's praying,

  334. right?

  335. He says,

  336. I pray you will love

  337. everyone in the church

  338. and everyone else.

  339. Everyone outside

  340. the church as well.

  341. And notice what he says.

  342. Verse 13.

  343. May He make your hearts

  344. blameless in holiness

  345. before our God and Father

  346. at the coming of our Lord Jesus

  347. with all His saints.

  348. Amen.

  349. Now there are three things

  350. he prays for.

  351. He prays for them to

  352. begin to love

  353. in an increasing fashion

  354. and for that love

  355. to overflow

  356. and to love everybody

  357. including those in

  358. and out of the church.

  359. For them to be blameless

  360. in holiness

  361. before our God.

  362. That's what we'll look at

  363. next week.

  364. And to be ready

  365. for the coming

  366. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  367. And we'll look at that

  368. two weeks

  369. from today.

  370. Now here's the big question.

  371. He's had a chance

  372. to think about this

  373. and to know

  374. what it is

  375. he wants to say

  376. in this prayer

  377. what he's asking God

  378. to do in their lives

  379. and what he's wanting

  380. them to be.

  381. And it becomes apparent

  382. the first order

  383. of business is

  384. that they love

  385. one another

  386. and love everyone else

  387. and you have to ask

  388. why do you think

  389. that was the top priority

  390. in his prayer

  391. for this church

  392. at Thessalonica.

  393. I want to share with you

  394. three reasons

  395. real quickly

  396. and then I want to share

  397. with you

  398. some ways

  399. in which we do

  400. what it is

  401. he's asking us to do.

  402. I believe

  403. he prays what he prays

  404. because Jesus said

  405. so clearly

  406. that love

  407. is the mark

  408. the badge

  409. of someone

  410. who is a disciple.

  411. Right before his death

  412. in John 13

  413. 34 and 35

  414. you know what Jesus said?

  415. He looked at his

  416. disciples

  417. and this is what he said

  418. I give you

  419. a new commandment

  420. that you love

  421. one another

  422. even

  423. as I have loved you.

  424. He tells them how to love

  425. as I have loved you

  426. I want you to love others.

  427. And then he says this

  428. this is how they will know

  429. that you're my disciples

  430. by your love

  431. for one another.

  432. So what you can quickly see

  433. is this love

  434. is the badge

  435. of discipleship.

  436. It's the telltale indicator.

  437. It's the sign

  438. of somebody

  439. who's a believer.

  440. Let me ask you

  441. how do you know

  442. somebody's a believer?

  443. Some folks

  444. think the way

  445. you let them

  446. know you're a believer

  447. is you get a tattoo

  448. on your arm

  449. it's got John 3.16

  450. and I want to tell you

  451. something

  452. if you've got a tattoo

  453. of John 3.16

  454. or anything else

  455. that don't bother me

  456. in the least

  457. because some folks

  458. will use that

  459. as an opportunity

  460. to be a witness

  461. for the Lord

  462. but understand this

  463. having the tattoo

  464. doesn't make you

  465. a believer.

  466. Do you understand that?

  467. It's not a real sign

  468. that you're a believer.

  469. It's okay to have a tattoo

  470. if you want a tattoo

  471. put whatever

  472. what you want

  473. on your arm

  474. but understand this

  475. it doesn't translate

  476. into you being

  477. automatically a Christian

  478. any more

  479. than having a bumper sticker

  480. that says

  481. honk if you love Jesus

  482. right?

  483. You can get that

  484. on a bumper sticker

  485. but that don't make you

  486. a believer

  487. you could have

  488. bought the car

  489. from somebody

  490. who had put

  491. the bumper sticker

  492. on the car

  493. right?

  494. And so

  495. none of those things

  496. some of you

  497. I'm sure today

  498. are wearing gold earrings

  499. or a necklace

  500. that has a cross

  501. around it

  502. or a cross on it

  503. and there's nothing

  504. wrong with that

  505. because it says to people

  506. man I believe in the cross

  507. and the cross is important

  508. it's the centerpiece

  509. of my life

  510. but I don't tell you something

  511. having the necklace

  512. having the earrings

  513. doesn't make you a Christian

  514. Jesus says

  515. the way you'll know

  516. somebody's a Christian

  517. is because they have love

  518. one for another

  519. it's by how you love

  520. now I want to ask you something

  521. have you ever been

  522. in a department store

  523. in a neighborhood

  524. you're walking

  525. you meet somebody

  526. and you spend

  527. four, five, six minutes

  528. with them in conversation

  529. maybe not even that long

  530. and you walk away

  531. you didn't talk about

  532. anything theological

  533. but you walk away from

  534. and you say to yourself this

  535. I just bet you

  536. they were a Christian

  537. you ever had that happen?

  538. we all have right?

  539. again that's yes and no

  540. y'all gonna get that down

  541. before I leave here

  542. you know

  543. so

  544. we've all had that experience

  545. what was it

  546. about them

  547. that made you reach

  548. that conclusion

  549. did you say

  550. I saw the tattoo

  551. I saw the bumper sticker

  552. on his car

  553. I saw the

  554. the necklace

  555. around their neck

  556. no

  557. it was always this

  558. it was something

  559. about their attitude

  560. something about

  561. how they treated you

  562. something about

  563. how they responded

  564. they were so helpful

  565. they were so kind

  566. they were so patient

  567. they were so loving

  568. you just thought to yourself

  569. that guy

  570. that guy

  571. has got

  572. and it was because

  573. of their love

  574. the very thing

  575. that Jesus said

  576. he said

  577. you'll know

  578. that they're believers

  579. because of how they love

  580. one another

  581. there's a second reason

  582. from Paul's experience

  583. he knew this

  584. a church that doesn't love

  585. the way Jesus loved

  586. it's all for naught

  587. now

  588. like I said in the first service

  589. I'll say it again now

  590. I know I'm gonna offend somebody

  591. and this is a bigger crowd

  592. so I know I'm gonna offend somebody here

  593. I don't intend to do that

  594. I'm just trying to be honest with you

  595. okay

  596. why would anybody

  597. ever name a church

  598. car rent

  599. I know in this many people

  600. in the room

  601. somebody here has belonged

  602. to a car rent

  603. at some point in time

  604. I have preached

  605. in several car rents

  606. car rent number one

  607. car rent number two

  608. in another place

  609. you just wonder

  610. is your car rent number three

  611. and four

  612. because they couldn't get along

  613. with each other either

  614. but

  615. why would you name a church

  616. car rent

  617. it's like

  618. did you not have a copy

  619. of the bible

  620. I mean

  621. this is

  622. a hot mess

  623. of a church

  624. I mean

  625. they're just

  626. they're just

  627. a mess

  628. and Paul writes to him

  629. and says

  630. man I can't believe

  631. what I'm hearing about you

  632. and I believe it's true

  633. you're divided

  634. and you're fighting

  635. among yourselves

  636. and there's dissension

  637. in the church

  638. and there's a guy

  639. who's sleeping

  640. with his father's wife

  641. are you crazy

  642. what's going on

  643. and you're suing one another

  644. taking each other to court

  645. and you get upset

  646. over the Lord's Supper

  647. and there's all kinds

  648. of problems

  649. about the spirit of God

  650. and how he works

  651. in your life

  652. so much so

  653. that between chapter 12

  654. which is about the gifts

  655. of the spirit

  656. and chapter 14

  657. which is about tongues

  658. he sandwiches in

  659. chapter 13

  660. that says

  661. you can have all the gifts

  662. in the world

  663. but if you don't have love

  664. it's useless

  665. right

  666. you're just like a

  667. loud set of symbols

  668. or a gong

  669. it means absolutely

  670. nothing

  671. unless you have

  672. love

  673. now I want to tell you something

  674. I've seen churches

  675. that try to build ministries

  676. around somebody

  677. who's a great great great

  678. preacher

  679. or musicians

  680. who are great great great

  681. musicians

  682. but I want to tell you

  683. something

  684. antagonism

  685. and division

  686. and dissension

  687. and lack of love

  688. always trumps all that

  689. you can have

  690. every bit of that

  691. but unless you have

  692. love in a church

  693. unless people know

  694. that first church

  695. of Pickens

  696. boy I'll tell you

  697. this about them

  698. their preacher

  699. may not be much

  700. that guy they got

  701. for the interim

  702. their music's okay

  703. but I'm going to tell you

  704. something friend

  705. they do love people

  706. if you will be known

  707. as a church

  708. that loves

  709. I mean really loves

  710. well people will be

  711. the path

  712. to your door

  713. so I think

  714. that's one of the reasons

  715. Paul said what he did

  716. there's a third reason

  717. and it's the most obvious

  718. of all probably

  719. how can we represent

  720. Jesus

  721. and not epitomize

  722. love

  723. because he did

  724. John said

  725. this of God

  726. he said

  727. God is love

  728. I've been here now

  729. about 15 or 16 weeks

  730. I'm not sure

  731. but about 13 of those weeks

  732. the first 13 of those weeks

  733. you know if you were here

  734. I preached just about

  735. every message

  736. around a narrative

  737. of Jesus

  738. and I did that

  739. with purpose

  740. because I wanted you

  741. to see

  742. boy

  743. Jesus is a loving Savior

  744. he loves harlots

  745. he loves the lowly

  746. he loves the down and outers

  747. he loves the publicans

  748. he loves every manner

  749. of sinner

  750. he's helpful

  751. he's compassionate

  752. he's healing

  753. he's raising the dead

  754. he's doing all these miracles

  755. I'm going to tell you something

  756. Jesus is the epitome

  757. of love

  758. how crazy is it

  759. for us to think

  760. that we can go into the world

  761. and declare to the world

  762. there's this God

  763. who you've never seen

  764. who is invisible

  765. who exists

  766. who sent his son

  767. who you've never seen

  768. and he came

  769. and he lived

  770. and he died on the cross

  771. and he rose from the dead

  772. and he gives you

  773. eternal life

  774. and he loves you

  775. and then be angry

  776. with the world

  777. have you ever seen churches

  778. that you get the feeling

  779. when you listen

  780. to what they say

  781. and what they do

  782. and how they flesh out

  783. their ministry

  784. boy they are angry

  785. with the world

  786. you know more

  787. for what they're against

  788. than what they're for

  789. have you ever seen that

  790. Jesus says

  791. I want to tell you something

  792. or Paul says

  793. if you want to be the church

  794. that God would have you to be

  795. then by all means

  796. you've got to

  797. be a church

  798. that increases

  799. in love

  800. and overflows

  801. with love

  802. now let me ask you

  803. is that

  804. who first pickings is

  805. well I hope it is

  806. I really hope it is

  807. because that's the first step

  808. in becoming a great church

  809. you are increasing

  810. in love

  811. and you absolutely

  812. exude love

  813. and overflow

  814. in love

  815. now some of you say

  816. well we're working on it

  817. but how do we do that

  818. you got a sheet of paper

  819. and a pencil

  820. I'm going to give you

  821. five quick ideas

  822. and I'm done

  823. you ready

  824. here's five things

  825. you need to do

  826. if you want to be a church

  827. that overflows

  828. in love

  829. and is increasing

  830. in love

  831. and the first thing

  832. you may not like

  833. you ready

  834. you got to get over yourself

  835. you just got to get over

  836. yourself

  837. you say preacher

  838. what in the world

  839. you mean

  840. look with me

  841. to Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  842. and verse 3 and 4

  843. turn there real quickly

  844. Philippians

  845. just a few pages

  846. to your left

  847. Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2:3

  848. verse 3 and 4

  849. Paul is telling us

  850. how Jesus lived

  851. and this is what he says

  852. do nothing out of rivalry

  853. or conceit

  854. but in humility

  855. consider others

  856. as more important

  857. than yourselves

  858. everyone should look out

  859. not only for his own interest

  860. but also for the interest

  861. of others

  862. now I want to tell you something

  863. that's the way kingdom people live

  864. but I want to warn you

  865. about something

  866. that's the opposite

  867. of how people of this world live

  868. people of this world

  869. the biggest difference

  870. between you and them

  871. outwardly

  872. as we look at your life

  873. should be this

  874. we should recognize quickly

  875. that guy is a kingdom person

  876. and so

  877. he's thinking of others

  878. before he thinks of himself

  879. and I want to tell you something

  880. that's sacrificial

  881. that requires real humility

  882. not fake humility

  883. to put others ahead of yourself

  884. but the way the world

  885. looks at situations is this

  886. it's me first

  887. I take care of me first

  888. I may take care of others later

  889. but I got to take care of me

  890. in fact I see commercials

  891. I tell my wife yesterday

  892. we were watching television

  893. I saw a commercial

  894. where they actually justified

  895. that kind of mentality

  896. it's me first

  897. I need to take care of me

  898. humility

  899. is not thinking

  900. lowly of yourself

  901. it's not thinking

  902. less of yourself

  903. it's thinking of yourself

  904. less

  905. you see the difference

  906. in those two ideas

  907. it's not thinking

  908. less of myself

  909. that I think

  910. poor me

  911. how bad I am

  912. it's just not thinking

  913. about me

  914. it's just not being

  915. really concerned

  916. so much

  917. about me

  918. now I'm going to

  919. tip you off on something

  920. if you haven't already noticed it

  921. we're pretty self-centered

  922. creatures

  923. you know that

  924. by nature

  925. I mean

  926. we all have this

  927. tendency to

  928. focus more on

  929. our problems

  930. than we do

  931. other people's

  932. problems

  933. I'm pastoring

  934. at Brushy Creek

  935. years ago

  936. there was a man

  937. in our church

  938. in his early 70's

  939. he develops

  940. what they

  941. fearful

  942. is cancer

  943. he has to go in

  944. for an operation

  945. I'm sitting there

  946. with his wife

  947. in the waiting room

  948. they do the procedure

  949. they come out

  950. wasn't going long

  951. just struck a note

  952. of fear in me

  953. because he wasn't

  954. in there very long

  955. at all

  956. and the surgeon

  957. comes out

  958. and he says

  959. I've got to tell you

  960. some bad news

  961. he kneels down there

  962. in front of the guy's wife

  963. and he says

  964. your husband

  965. has a cancer

  966. that's just inoperable

  967. we got in there

  968. and it spreads

  969. metastasized

  970. and he's not going

  971. to live long

  972. I'm real

  973. real sorry

  974. he pats her on the knee

  975. asks if she's anything

  976. she can do

  977. she looks just

  978. dumbfounded

  979. and he walks out

  980. as soon as he gets out

  981. she turns to me

  982. and she says to me

  983. these are almost

  984. her exact words

  985. what am I going

  986. to do

  987. when he's gone

  988. how am I going

  989. to make it

  990. who's going

  991. to take care of me

  992. what's my life

  993. going to be like

  994. when he's gone

  995. you know what

  996. I couldn't help

  997. but think

  998. he's the guy

  999. with cancer

  1000. you're going

  1001. to be the one

  1002. living

  1003. your life's going

  1004. on

  1005. he's getting ready

  1006. from the earthly

  1007. perspective

  1008. getting ready

  1009. to end

  1010. have you ever

  1011. noticed how

  1012. when tragedies

  1013. occur so often times

  1014. we don't even

  1015. realize we do it

  1016. we make it

  1017. about us

  1018. we become

  1019. the center

  1020. of the universe

  1021. and they become

  1022. almost secondary

  1023. how does this

  1024. impact my life

  1025. not how does it

  1026. impact his life

  1027. you might think

1028. if she really loved him

  1029. she'd be thinking

1030. and I know she did

  1031. she's just self-absorbed

1032. but she might be thinking

1033. how am I going to help him

  1034. through this difficult time

  1035. well he's facing

  1036. some dark days ahead

  1037. he's facing

  1038. a real message here

  1039. when he wakes up

  1040. that no one wants

  1041. to get

  1042. that you're dying

  1043. but instead

1044. right now in the moment

  1045. she's consumed in herself

1046. can I ask you something

1047. is that kind of indicative

  1048. of your life

  1049. your problems matter

  1050. so much

  1051. that other people

  1052. just don't matter

  1053. as much

  1054. so

  1055. first thing you need

  1056. to do is

  1057. get over yourself

  1058. second thing you need

  1059. to do is

  1060. empathize

  1061. begin seeing others

  1062. and their hurts

  1063. and needs

  1064. before you do

  1065. your own

  1066. now turn with me

  1067. quickly to 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  1068. chapter 12

  1069. look at 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  1070. chapter 12

  1071. and verse 26

  1072. so if one member

  1073. suffers

  1074. all the members

  1075. suffer with it

  1076. if one member

  1077. is honored

  1078. all the members

  1079. rejoice with it

1080. you know what he's saying

  1081. he's saying

1082. when you're in the body

  1083. of Christ

1084. and you feel for others

  1085. the way you should

  1086. and you're not

  1087. putting yourself first

  1088. it's always about you

  1089. you've gotten over

  1090. yourself

  1091. and you learn

  1092. how to empathize

  1093. with others

  1094. when they rejoice

  1095. guess what

  1096. you get happy

  1097. with them

  1098. and when they're sad

  1099. and they're broken

  1100. and their heart aches

  1101. man your heart aches

  1102. right along

  1103. with them

  1104. because

  1105. you put yourself

  1106. in their shoes

  1107. that's what it means

  1108. to empathize

  1109. I take myself

  1110. out of my life

  1111. and I insert myself

  1112. into somebody

  1113. else's life

1114. I'm going to tell you

  1115. when you begin

  1116. to do that

  1117. well you'll begin

  1118. to feel for people

  1119. and love people

  1120. in a way

  1121. you never have before

  1122. here's the tragedy

  1123. most times

  1124. we see people

  1125. with needs

  1126. who are hurting

  1127. and we just go

  1128. oh that's bad

  1129. that's bad

  1130. boy

  1131. I wish I could

  1132. do something

  1133. about that

  1134. and we just

  1135. walk right on

  1136. I'm pastor

  1137. of Western Avenue

  1138. Baptist Church

  1139. when this happened

  1140. I'm about

  1141. 34 years of age

  1142. there was a lady

  1143. in our church

  1144. who was chronically

  1145. going in and out

  1146. of the hospital

  1147. all the time

  1148. and she wasn't

  1149. sick a whole lot

  1150. of times

  1151. she just loved

  1152. doctors and hospitals

  1153. and so she's about

  1154. 45 miles away

1155. and I got to go see her

  1156. and it's been

  1157. one of the most

  1158. horrendous weeks

  1159. in my life

  1160. to that point

1161. in time as a pastor

  1162. so I'm just

  1163. wore slap out

  1164. I've slept very little

  1165. this week

1166. and I'm in my car

  1167. and I'm driving

  1168. to Winston-Salem

  1169. and I can remember

  1170. the conversation

  1171. it's been many many

  1172. years ago

  1173. about half a lifetime

  1174. ago

  1175. and yeah I remember

  1176. very distinctly

  1177. I'm having a pity party

  1178. have any of y'all

  1179. ever done that

  1180. I'm the only

  1181. invited guest

  1182. and I'm just

  1183. wallowing in it

  1184. I'm just thinking

  1185. poor me

  1186. I'm so tired

  1187. I'm hungry

  1188. I haven't slept

  1189. they're just running

  1190. me ragged

  1191. I'm going over

  1192. to see somebody

  1193. who I need

  1194. the bed worse

  1195. than they need it

  1196. and I'm riding

  1197. over there

  1198. and I pull up

  1199. into the parking lot

1200. and I have to park

  1201. two floors up

  1202. and that's an

  1203. aggravation

  1204. and I get out

  1205. and I'm walking

  1206. a long way

  1207. to the hospital

  1208. big huge hospital

  1209. in Winston-Salem

1210. and I get to the

1211. back door of the hospital

  1212. and it's got these

  1213. electric doors

  1214. you know

  1215. and I'm in a hurry

  1216. because I just want

  1217. to get in there

  1218. and see her

1219. and get out of there

  1220. bless the Lord Jesus

  1221. and I'm just

  1222. I'm just getting in

  1223. and getting out

1224. and just doing my job

  1225. right

1226. and just as I start

  1227. in that door

  1228. and the electric door

  1229. opens

  1230. there's a lady

  1231. with a kid

  1232. in a wheelchair

1233. and she's pushing him out

  1234. and I just nearly

  1235. run right over

  1236. the top of him

  1237. so I did like

  1238. any of you

  1239. I stop

  1240. I apologize

  1241. and I back up

1242. and I just get out

  1243. of there

  1244. and wait

  1245. and wait

  1246. and she pushes

  1247. this little boy out

  1248. she's about my wife's age

  1249. and the little boy

  1250. is about the age

  1251. of my little boy

1252. about seven years of age

  1253. and he's sitting

  1254. in this wheelchair

  1255. and he's got

  1256. hospital gown on

  1257. but a baseball cap

  1258. one of these

  1259. plastic baseball caps

  1260. and you can't help

  1261. but notice

1262. all his hair is gone

  1263. and he's got those

  1264. marks that indicate

  1265. he's a radiation

  1266. treatment patient

  1267. and so

  1268. I just stand back

1269. and she pushes him out

1270. and they go out here

  1271. to that divider

  1272. and there's a little wall

1273. and she sits on the wall

1274. and he's there in sunshine

  1275. and they're just out

  1276. soaking up sunshine

  1277. and I stand there

  1278. for about 30 seconds

  1279. and watch that lady

  1280. I remember

  1281. just big tears

  1282. just pouring down

  1283. my face

  1284. and I thought

  1285. you big baby

  1286. you're complaining

  1287. about this

  1288. and about that

1289. and how hard you got it

  1290. you don't know

  1291. what trouble is

  1292. that's trouble

1293. or can you put yourself

  1294. in that mama's shoes

  1295. she's sitting there

  1296. saying nice things

  1297. and smiling

1298. and trying to cheer up her boy

  1299. but on the inside

  1300. can you imagine

  1301. the turmoil

  1302. and the heartache

  1303. and the hurt

  1304. and the fear

  1305. and the anxiety

  1306. that's going on

  1307. inside that lady

  1308. and that's what

  1309. empathy looks like

  1310. it's when you don't

  1311. just see it

1312. when you stop long enough

  1313. to just insert yourself

  1314. in their place

1315. and I'm going to tell you

  1316. something

  1317. every one of you

  1318. got friends right now

  1319. who've got cancer

1320. they got a heart problem

  1321. they don't have money

1322. a lot of us in this room

1323. most of us in this room

  1324. you may have had

  1325. this experience

  1326. at some time

  1327. where you didn't know

  1328. where your next check

  1329. was coming from

  1330. your next meal

  1331. was coming from

1332. how you're going to pay

  1333. the rent

1334. at the end of the month

  1335. but most of us

  1336. get through life

  1337. without that

  1338. it may have happened

  1339. once or twice

  1340. but most of us

1341. we live free of that

1342. but I'm going to tell you

  1343. something

  1344. there's some folk

  1345. out there

  1346. they live that way

1347. every day of their lives

1348. there are folk out there

  1349. who have prescriptions

  1350. this morning

  1351. that they need

  1352. to have fill

1353. but they can't get them

  1354. filled because

  1355. they don't have

1356. the money to do it

  1357. they're making choices

1358. about do I do this

1359. or do I do that

  1360. and that's something

  1361. a lot of us

  1362. we just don't know

  1363. anything about that

  1364. and that's the beginning

  1365. of love

1366. if you want to have love

  1367. that increases

  1368. and overflows

  1369. you've got to get

  1370. the place you can

  1371. empathize with people

  1372. you see them

  1373. and you live

  1374. in their shoes

1375. for just a few minutes

  1376. until you can get

  1377. your head around

  1378. here's what I need to do

  1379. here's the third thing

1380. I think you can do

1381. if you want to increase

  1382. in love

  1383. and overflow in love

  1384. and that's to pray

  1385. for one another

  1386. James

  1387. remember I mentioned James

1388. we're going to look at it

  1389. more closely next week

1390. but James in chapter 5

  1391. and verse 16 says

  1392. pray for one another

  1393. do that continually

1394. and look up and listen

  1395. I don't want to beat up

  1396. on anybody this morning

1397. but you know so often

1398. what we take that to mean

  1399. that in Sunday school

  1400. we hear about somebody

  1401. who's sick

  1402. and we say yeah

  1403. I'll pray for them

1404. oh yeah I'll pray for them

  1405. a lot of times

  1406. we never give it

  1407. another thought

  1408. we say sometimes

  1409. when we say

  1410. I pray for you

  1411. it just means

  1412. you crossed my mind

  1413. I thought about you

  1414. but I didn't really

  1415. pray for you

1416. and even how we pray

  1417. when James says that

  1418. he didn't mean just

  1419. to let them pass

  1420. through your mind

  1421. to allow their name

1422. to fall for your lips

  1423. okay I mentioned them

  1424. I'm done with that

1425. you know how I think

  1426. he meant for us

  1427. to pray

  1428. that we stop

  1429. and put ourselves

  1430. in the shoes

  1431. and right now

  1432. well I got a lot of

  1433. friends that have cancer

  1434. I'm getting older

1435. and a lot of my friends

  1436. are getting older

  1437. and they're getting sick

  1438. I mean close friends

  1439. to me

1440. and I'm going to tell you

1441. every night when I pray

  1442. and in the morning

  1443. when I pray

  1444. I try to think

1445. what's it like to be

  1446. and I won't call their name

  1447. but this particular person

  1448. what's it like

  1449. to be their wife

  1450. what's it like

1451. to have to go get

  1452. chemotherapy

  1453. and radiation

  1454. what's it like

  1455. to be so sick

1456. you think you're going to die

  1457. and then you're fearful

  1458. you might

  1459. what's it like

  1460. to be like

  1461. what's it like

  1462. to see your spouse

  1463. slipping away

  1464. from you

  1465. what's it like

  1466. and to pray

  1467. from that perspective

  1468. God

  1469. give them peace

  1470. let them think

  1471. of something

  1472. other than their cancer

  1473. or their problem

  1474. or their sickness

  1475. or whatever it is

1476. that's wrong in their life

  1477. they got problems

  1478. with their children

  1479. or their marriage

  1480. is falling apart

  1481. God just let them

  1482. get free of that

  1483. for a few minutes

  1484. would you do that

  1485. would you intervene

  1486. somehow

  1487. and help them

1488. I'm going to tell you

  1489. if you'll begin

  1490. to do that

  1491. more folks

  1492. will begin to notice

  1493. the first baptist

  1494. picking the boy

  1495. those folks

  1496. they don't just say

  1497. they pray for

1498. they really pray for you

  1499. they really love you

  1500. they're growing

  1501. in their life

  1502. and they're abounding

  1503. in their life

  1504. which leads me

  1505. to the fourth thing

  1506. and this is something

  1507. I really like

  1508. it's pretty simple

  1509. you ready

  1510. do something

  1511. do something

1512. I want you to listen

  1513. as I read

  1514. 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  1515. and verse 17

  1516. listen to what

  1517. John says

  1518. 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  1519. and verse 17

  1520. if anyone has

  1521. this world's goods

  1522. and sees his brother

  1523. in need

  1524. but shuts off

  1525. his compassion

  1526. from him

  1527. how can God's love

  1528. reside in him

  1529. boy

  1530. I don't know

  1531. how you'd make it

  1532. any clearer than that

  1533. Bob Goff

  1534. remember that book

  1535. I mentioned

1536. four, five, six weeks ago

  1537. Bob Goff

  1538. I'm telling you that

  1539. again so you can

  1540. write it down

  1541. Bob Goff

  1542. Love Does

1543. is the book he authored

  1544. I told you about

1545. that book several weeks ago

  1546. one gentleman

  1547. in the crowd came

  1548. and said to me

  1549. the following

  1550. he said

  1551. I bought that book

  1552. I'm not a reader

1553. I want to tell you something

1554. I finished it in two days

  1555. he said

1556. one of the greatest books

  1557. I've ever read

1558. if you haven't read it

1559. you ought to get that book

  1560. I'm telling you

  1561. you'll laugh

  1562. you'll cry

  1563. it's a great

  1564. great great read

  1565. Love Does

  1566. and the whole basis

  1567. of it is this

  1568. that love is not

  1569. something you look at

  1570. somebody and say

  1571. with goo goo eyes

  1572. when you love somebody

  1573. you act

  1574. love is an action

  1575. it's not a thought

  1576. it's not a suggestion

  1577. it's not a word

  1578. it's not a proposal

  1579. it's an action

  1580. you love

  1581. folk by doing

  1582. so do something

  1583. go cut somebody's grass

  1584. if you love them

  1585. take them a meal

  1586. this afternoon

  1587. if you love them

  1588. pay their light bill

  1589. if you love them

  1590. take care of that

  1591. prescription for them

  1592. if you love them

  1593. keep their kids

1594. and give them a night

  1595. on the town

  1596. if you love them

1597. you understand what I'm saying

  1598. that's what real love

  1599. looks like

  1600. it acts

  1601. it does something

  1602. the church

  1603. every day

  1604. it exists

  1605. has tons

  1606. of opportunities

  1607. to show the world

  1608. to demonstrate

  1609. the world

  1610. that we love them

1611. but can I tell you something

  1612. we just seldom

  1613. take those opportunities

  1614. we let them come

1615. and we let them go

  1616. instead of seizing

  1617. the moment

1618. and I'm going to tell you something

1619. every time I see the church

  1620. be the church

  1621. boy my head swells

  1622. with pride

1623. and every time I see

  1624. the church

  1625. not be the church

  1626. as a pastor

1627. it always broke my heart

  1628. I'm preaching revival

  1629. about 23

  1630. or 24 years ago

  1631. best I can remember

  1632. in a community

  1633. a number of miles

  1634. from Greer

1635. the guy who calls me

1636. and asks me to preach

  1637. I've never met

  1638. pretty unusual

  1639. I got a few invitations

  1640. like that

1641. but usually there were guys

  1642. that I knew

  1643. guys like Fred

  1644. would say

  1645. would you come over

1646. and would you preach for me

1647. this guy that I'd never met

  1648. didn't know his name

1649. didn't know anything about it

1650. he calls me out of the blue

  1651. and he says

  1652. I've heard about you

1653. could you come and preach

  1654. I said yeah

1655. he gives me the dates

1656. I'm going to be there

  1657. Sunday night

  1658. through a Wednesday

  1659. so I go and I preach

  1660. I preach Sunday night

  1661. Monday Tuesday

  1662. and when Wednesday comes

  1663. I get there

1664. and he comes over to me

  1665. and sits down

  1666. and he says

1667. tells me he's enjoyed it

  1668. and he says

1669. could you go with me

  1670. to supper tonight

  1671. after this is over

  1672. I said I'd be glad to

1673. so when it was over

1674. his wife couldn't be there

  1675. that night

  1676. and he and I

  1677. go to supper

1678. in this little fish camp

  1679. we're sitting there

  1680. we're ordering our meal

  1681. and we're just waiting

  1682. on the waitress

  1683. to bring our food

  1684. it's kind of awkward

  1685. it's just real

  1686. unusually silent

  1687. and he says

  1688. has anybody told you

  1689. about me

  1690. my situation

  1691. I said no

  1692. I felt a little bit odd

  1693. I said no

  1694. I don't know

  1695. what you're talking about

1696. he says you don't know

  1697. anything about my situation

  1698. at all

  1699. no

  1700. he says you're probably

  1701. the only preacher

  1702. in South Carolina

  1703. who doesn't

1704. I want to tell you something

  1705. I really didn't

  1706. I didn't know him

  1707. from Adam

1708. other than I'd met him

  1709. for those three days

  1710. he says

1711. can I tell you my story

  1712. I'd be glad to

  1713. to listen

  1714. he tells me

1715. short as I can make it

  1716. a few years back

  1717. a couple years back

  1718. from when this happened

  1719. years ago

  1720. he said

  1721. I got a 19 year old daughter

  1722. she just got out

  1723. of high school

  1724. she's dating

  1725. our youth minister

  1726. and

  1727. she suddenly

  1728. begins to develop

  1729. these health problems

  1730. my wife

  1731. asked her

  1732. what's going on

  1733. she just

  1734. evades it

  1735. leads us down

  1736. this rabbit trail

  1737. but she's not

  1738. changing in size

  1739. any

  1740. that we can tell

  1741. she's camouflaging

  1742. it with her clothes

  1743. and one Saturday night

  1744. she's so deathly ill

1745. we think it must be

  1746. a gallbladder

  1747. appendicitis

1748. so at 3 in the morning

  1749. when we can't

  1750. manage it anymore

  1751. we rush her to

  1752. the hospital

  1753. local hospital

  1754. we get there

  1755. and she's back

  1756. there just a few

  1757. minutes

  1758. and this doctor

  1759. comes out

  1760. and he says

  1761. pastor can I

  1762. talk with you

  1763. he says yes sir

  1764. and he sits down

  1765. he says I don't

  1766. know how to tell

  1767. you this

  1768. he said but your

  1769. daughter is about

  1770. 8 months pregnant

  1771. and she's in labor

  1772. and she's going to

  1773. have this baby

  1774. tonight

1775. he said me and my

  1776. wife look at each

  1777. other and we cannot

  1778. believe what we're

  1779. hearing

  1780. and I'm going to

  1781. tell you I've sat

  1782. across from a lot

  1783. of people

  1784. pretty good about

  1785. telling me

  1786. telling when people

  1787. are telling me the

  1788. truth and they're

  1789. telling me a lie

  1790. I've done this so

  1791. long

1792. I can look in his

  1793. face and just tell

  1794. I don't understand

  1795. that but he's telling

  1796. me the absolute

  1797. truth

  1798. he says we're

  1799. grief stricken

  1800. he said we're just

  1801. in shock the baby's

  1802. born a few hours

  1803. later

  1804. it's a Saturday

  1805. night so I haven't

  1806. been to bed all

  1807. night long

  1808. I've been up with

  1809. my daughter now I

  1810. have a baby about

  1811. 8 in the morning

1812. I show up at church

  1813. and the clothes I

  1814. worn to the hospital

  1815. the church service

  1816. begins but I tell

  1817. the guy I'm going

  1818. to take charge and

  1819. I just got something

1820. I got to tell the

  1821. congregation he

  1822. stands up and he

  1823. tells the congregation

1824. just what I told you

1825. and he says I want to

  1826. tell you I didn't know

  1827. about this I'm

  1828. embarrassed about this

  1829. but I understand if

  1830. you want me to

  1831. resign

  1832. he said we haven't

  1833. tried to hide anything

  1834. from you but I'm

  1835. just I'm finding this

1836. out for myself and I'm

  1837. tired and I can't do

  1838. this this morning

  1839. so there's not going

  1840. to be any preaching

  1841. brother so and so

  1842. is going to come

  1843. and he's going to

1844. lead us in a song

  1845. or two you're going

  1846. to pray and then

  1847. you're going home

1848. but if you want me

  1849. to resign I'm not

1850. going to be here you

  1851. can talk openly about

  1852. it among yourselves

1853. and I'm going to leave

1854. and go back to the

  1855. hospital be with my

  1856. wife and daughter

  1857. he walks out the

  1858. door he goes to

  1859. the hospital he stays

  1860. till about 3 3 30 in

  1861. the afternoon he gets

1862. in his car and he and

  1863. his wife are going

  1864. home they're just dead

1865. tired he says when I

  1866. get to the pastoral

  1867. I start turning in

  1868. the driveway and as

1869. I turn in the driveway

  1870. I look and they're

  1871. under our carport it

  1872. looks like the whole

  1873. church has gone to

  1874. Walmart and they

  1875. bought out everything

  1876. Walmart had to sell

1877. on babies he says the

  1878. carport is just packed

1879. from top to bottom with

  1880. things that baby could

  1881. use he said I can't

1882. tell you how I felt in

1883. my heart I'm going to

1884. tell you I sat there

  1885. listening and I just

1886. began to cry I mean

  1887. I'm emotional I just

1888. began to cry you know

1889. why I cried not for the

  1890. hardship he endured I

  1891. cried because I thought

  1892. to myself what a

  1893. beautiful picture of

1894. what the church ought to

  1895. be that's when the

  1896. church acts like the

  1897. church right I've seen

1898. it so many times be so

  1899. judgmental and we

1900. want to just preach to

1901. people and beat up on

  1902. people and tell them

  1903. how you shouldn't have

  1904. done this and you

  1905. shouldn't have done

1906. that when many of us

  1907. ourselves have found

  1908. ourselves in sin's path

1909. boy we need the mercy

1910. and the grace of God

  1911. bestowed on us and

1912. thank God he showed us

1913. mercy but why is it we're

1914. so slow sometimes to show

1915. mercy and grace to other

  1916. people it's a beautiful

  1917. thing when the church

  1918. acts like the church

  1919. it's a sad thing when

  1920. the church doesn't seize

  1921. the opportunity it's been

1922. given to be the church

  1923. there's one last thing

1924. and I close with this

1925. if you want to love to

1926. increase in your life and

1927. in your church and to

  1928. overflow begin forgiving

1929. people who have hurt you

1930. now Brian has not had a

  1931. single conversation with

1932. me and I had dinner with

1933. Fred Stone about 10 days

1934. ago or nine days ago

1935. Fred has not said a

1936. single word to me I

  1937. don't know if anybody

1938. in this church has had a

  1939. riff with anybody else

  1940. that's the honest truth

1941. before God but I want

1942. to tell you something in

1943. a church this size it

  1944. would seem almost

  1945. impossible to me that

  1946. you could be members

1947. here for a long long

  1948. long time and somebody

  1949. not get crosswise with

  1950. somebody else and I'm

1951. asking you if you want

  1952. love to abound to

  1953. forgive them

1954. right now today to make

  1955. a choice that going

  1956. forward I'm forgiving

1957. them I'm going to live

  1958. as though that never

  1959. happened I'm going to

1960. put it out of my life

1961. and some of you are

  1962. thinking already I know

  1963. what you're thinking

  1964. because I've been where

1965. you are you don't know

1966. what they did you don't

  1967. know how inexcusable

  1968. their action against me

1969. was and boy I get that

  1970. because I'm going to

1971. tell you I've had some

1972. folk do some pretty mean

1973. stuff to me through the

1974. years hard to get by

1975. hard just to get past

  1976. that I don't tell you

  1977. something they nailed

1978. Jesus to the cross and

1979. as they're nailed him to

1980. the cross the first words

1981. out of his mouth were

  1982. these father forgive them

1983. for they know not what

1984. they do I think that

  1985. prayer included pilot who

1986. like a coward found him

1987. guilty when he should have

1988. found him innocent I think

  1989. it included the Jewish

1990. leaders of that mob who

  1991. made false accusations

  1992. knowing they weren't

1993. true I think it applied to

  1994. the Roman soldiers who

  1995. brutally drove those spikes

1996. through his hands and I

1997. think it included all those

1998. folk out there for whom he

1999. had done good who failed to

2000. stand in his behalf even the

  2001. disciples who betrayed him

2002. and who denied ever even

2003. knowing him and I'm going to

2004. say to you if Jesus can

2005. forgive us that what's anybody

2006. ever done to you you can't

2007. forgive remember Joseph in the

2008. Old Testament chapter 45 his

2009. brothers you know how bad his

  2010. brothers disliked him they

2011. wanted him dead they threw him

  2012. into a cistern we're going to

2013. kill him later to make a few

2014. bucks and to allow their

2015. conscience to be a little at

2016. ease they sold him to slave

2017. traders he ends up in prison

2018. because of a lie that

2019. Potiphar's wife told about it

2020. all that because of what these

2021. brothers did and yet when they

2022. come years later in need of

2023. help you know what he does

2024. instead of turning them away or

2025. being angry with them he

  2026. literally literally drives all

2027. the Egyptians out of the room

2028. and reaches out and embraces

2029. them and hugs them and even

2030. says this don't blame yourself

2031. you didn't put me here God put me

2032. here he did everything in his

2033. power to restore a broken

2034. relationship and I'm going to

2035. tell you something when your love

2036. grows and when you abound in love

2037. that's exactly what every one of

2038. us need to do we need to come to

2039. the place that we forgive others

2040. even inexcusable hurts in our life

2041. so let me ask you have you ever

2042. done that can you think of somebody

2043. right now at First Baptist Pickens or

2044. somebody in your family or somebody at

2045. work and you say you know I have

2046. trouble loving them because they did

2047. this to me right here would you let

2048. it go today would you just let that

2049. go you say I can't yeah you can you

2050. got a choice I want to tell you

2051. something they don't even hold the

2052. keys to that you do you're the only

2053. one who can forgive them you're the

2054. only one who can let it go so would

2055. you do that this morning we're going to

2056. have a hymn of invitation and Brian's

2057. going to sing it lead us in it but if

2058. the Lord's spoken to your heart and

2059. there's something you need to deal

2060. with God about would you just get up

2061. out of your seat right now and just

2062. come and you can just stand here at

2063. the front or kneel or you can do it

2064. right there at your chair if you don't

2065. want to come forward just maybe be

2066. seated again follow their stand just

2067. say I got some business I got to take

2068. care of God I haven't been loving the

2069. way I need to love let's stand this

  2070. Brian leads us

  2071. you

  2072. you

  2073. you

  2074. you

  2075. you

  2076. you

  2077. you
