  1. If you have your Bibles, turn with me to 1 Thessalonians chapter 3.

    1 Thessalonians 3 chapter mention

  2. We're beginning, or continuing, I should say rather, our series.

  3. We started last week's three-part series about what kind of church do we want to be.

  4. Let me go back for those of you who weren't here last week and just kind of set the stage.

  5. I'll do that very, very briefly.

  6. Paul is on his second missionary journey.

  7. He is in Philippi and he leads the Philippians to the Lord.

  8. Suffers great persecution, has to flee the city, goes ultimately to Thessalonica.

  9. There in Thessalonica, he shows up at the synagogue and he begins to preach.

  10. And he does that for three consecutive Sabbaths as they gather for worship.

  11. A number of those people hear the gospel, respond in faith to what he said.

  12. And they establish friendships and they begin growing in their faith.

  13. Three weeks, though, after his arrival, suddenly persecution is about to take off in Paul's life in the church.

  14. Some of the folk who have come to be a part of this church, they come to Paul and they say,

  15. Paul, you need to flee for your life.

  16. And so he flees and he goes to the next city.

  17. And as we read in 1 Thessalonians, he desires to get back to them because he's concerned about them.

  18. He wonders what's happening to them.

  19. Have they continued in the faith they have first embraced or have they fallen by the wayside?

  20. And so he'd make several attempts to go back.

  21. And he says in these first two chapters that Satan continually hinders him from being able to go back.

  22. So in chapter 3, verse 1, when he says he can stand it no longer, he's just beside himself, worried about these folk,

  23. he sends Timothy, says, Timothy, leave me, go back and check on those folk in Thessalonica.

  24. He goes and checks on them.

  25. When he comes back, you read about that in verses 6 through 10 of the third chapter.

  26. And basically what he finds is this.

  27. These folk are doing fine, even in the absence of leadership.

  28. These people are growing in their faith.

  29. They're loving one another the way they should.

  30. And so Paul, in chapter 3, verses 11 to 13, that's the portion of this that we're using as our focus during this three-week study.

  31. Paul prays a prayer to these Thessalonians.

  32. And the first part we looked at last week.

  33. Today we look at the second part, the middle part.

  34. What he says in that first part is this.

  35. I'm praying that you will increase in your love.

  36. Timothy's told me you're loving one another, but increase in that.

  37. In fact, increase to the point that it overflows, that it spills over in everything you do.

  38. And then he gives them explicit instructions.

  39. He says, I want you to love those in the church, but also those outside the church.

  40. And we talked about what that looked like.

  41. In fact, the telltale sign, the badge of discipleship for all believers,

  42. should always be our love for folk around us.

  43. Those who we know, those who are in the faith, those who are a part of the family of God,

  44. but also those who are opposed to us.

  45. Those are our enemies.

  46. Those are our neighbors.

  47. Those who don't walk with Christ.

  48. We're to be known as a church that loves.

  49. And I really hope and trust and believe that's what you here at First Baptist Pickens want to do.

  50. You want to emulate what it is to love the Lord Jesus Christ and thereby love the world.

  51. Well, he goes on in the middle of that next verse.

  52. Look at verse 13.

  53. He prays this prayer as well.

  54. May he make your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father.

  55. May he make your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father.

  56. Let's just be honest about it for a moment.

  57. Years and years ago, we heard a lot about holiness, right?

  58. Most of you who were born in the 40s, the 50s, the 60s, you went to church and you heard a whole lot about holiness.

  59. Have you noticed how in the last several decades we've moved away from talking about holiness?

  60. In fact, if we're just absolutely honest about it, that's a word we kind of shy away from in all walks of life.

  61. If your middle schooler shows up tomorrow and the other middle schooler looks at them and says, hey, there's old Holy John.

  62. There's Holy Jane.

  63. There's Holy Sally.

  64. They're not usually perceiving that to be a compliment, right?

  65. And in fact, if you own your job as adults, go in the marketplace, and you overhear people talking, more often than not, sometimes they can say it complimentary.

  66. But more often than not, when that word arises in the marketplace, they're not using it in a complimentary fashion.

  67. And so we kind of shy away from it.

  68. But I want to tell you something.

  69. In the church, we need holiness and purity as much as flowers need sunshine and rain.

  70. And you can never be pleasing unto God and be the church that God intends for you to be unless your life is marked by what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called an inner, hidden holiness of the heart.

  71. I'm not talking about a holiness that you wear on your sleeve.

  72. I'm not talking about a holy roller, so to speak.

  73. I'm talking about a real, genuine, pure, hidden holiness that emerges.

  74. Folk can see it, but you don't wear it on your sleeve.

  75. So I want to just mention a few things about this prayer he prays here.

  76. Let's look at it again.

  77. May he make your hearts blameless in holiness before our God.

  78. This is going to scare you, but I'm going to say about 13 things about that, okay?

  79. We're not going to be here all afternoon.

  80. I'm going to say them just in real staccato fashion.

  81. In fact, I'm going to read several of them and then make just a brief comment.

  82. But let's just begin.

  83. Here's the first.

  84. The end result is that they be holy and blameless before the Lord with the underscoring of the word be.

  85. The emphasis on the word be.

  86. That's what his ultimate goal is for these believers in Thessalonica.

  87. Not that they act holy, that they be holy.

  88. And there's a difference in those two things, right?

  89. We've seen folk act holy and then we've seen folk be holy.

  90. You've seen folk who give off the image, they're as pure as the new driven snow.

  91. And then you see people in their speech patterns, in their thought patterns, in their lifestyle.

  92. Boy, they live a life that is pure.

  93. Second thing I want you to say is this.

  94. On our own, we are neither holy nor blameless.

  95. I don't want to burst your bubble this morning, but there's a lot wrong with all of us.

  96. Do you know that?

  97. Have you ever noticed that?

  98. Have you ever taken just self-inventory and a long, close look at yourself?

  99. You're no prize, right?

  100. I mean, I'm certainly not.

  101. I would readily admit that about myself.

  102. I'm just no prize.

  103. There's a lot about me that's wrong.

  104. I've sinned many, many, many times in my life.

  105. And I just want you to know, a lot of us in the church give off to the world

  106. that when we became a Christian, we just perfected ourselves.

  107. That we're just not like you because you have sin in your life.

  108. Let's just be straight about it today.

  109. Most of us sin just about every day of our lives.

  110. Do we not?

  111. In fact, you get behind a slow-moving car on your way to work in the morning,

  112. you can sin two or three times before you get to the office, right?

  113. A lot of us struggle with sin on an ongoing, daily basis.

  114. If they could hook one of those GoPros on you

  115. and see everything that you do in a 24-hour period

  116. and hear every word that you speak

  117. and read your mind and demonstrate graphically every thought you have.

  118. Anybody here feel comfortable with us showing that film next week?

  119. I didn't think so.

  120. Because the truth is we project one image of ourselves,

  121. but we know deep down in our heart, mind, and soul,

  122. none of us are as holy and pure and righteous as we seem.

  123. Third thing I want you to see is this.

  124. He asked God to do this because we aren't capable of doing this on our own.

  125. That's his prayer.

  126. He doesn't say, may you be holy and blameless.

  127. May he make you holy and blameless.

  128. So let me just clue you in on something.

  129. You can try all you want to remake yourself,

  130. and we all do that from time to time.

  131. In fact, we get that mistaken notion that's what we do

  132. when we rededicate our lives to the Lord.

  133. We come to the altar, we fall on our knees,

  134. and we say, God, I'm going to do better.

  135. I'm going to do better.

  136. If you're ever going to become holy and blameless before the Lord,

  137. you know what's going to have to happen?

  138. God's going to have to do a work in you.

  139. Because you can't do that on your own.

  140. You've tried that last about three minutes, doesn't it?

  141. Isn't that right?

  142. And you say, I'm going to do better at this,

  143. and then suddenly you don't.

  144. So if it's going to happen,

  145. it's going to happen because God does a work in your life.

  146. Fourthly, this process that we're talking about,

  147. wherein God does a work of grace in our lives,

  148. it is called sanctification.

  149. Big, long theological word.

  150. You've seen it in your scripture.

  151. It's actually a biblical word.

  152. One you might want to write down in your notes

  153. in the side of this margin of this verse

  154. because that's what he's talking about.

  155. He's saying, I hope God will do a work of sanctification in your life.

  156. Now let me tell you about this work of sanctification.

  157. It begins at the moment of conversion.

  158. Salvation is an ongoing process.

  159. We have been saved, but we are also being saved.

  160. And we will be saved.

  161. Do you understand that?

  162. Conversion is a one-moment experience.

  163. You are converted when you come to know Christ as Savior,

  164. not when you come and take a preacher's hand,

  165. shake his hand, even sit and pray a prayer that he leads you in.

  166. You are saved the moment you hear the gospel.

  167. It makes sense to you.

  168. And you say, I want that.

  169. I want God to save me.

  170. Before you ever get up out of your seat,

  171. before you ever pray a prayer,

  172. you are converted the moment you've turned to God in your mind and heart

  173. and say, God, I need you.

  174. At that very moment, you're converted.

  175. What happens is a miracle.

  176. The Holy Spirit of God moves into your life.

  177. He takes a person who is dead in their trespasses and sins,

  178. and he quickens them, he brings them to life.

  179. They're regenerated and they are saved, born again,

  180. any of those terms you want to use at that moment in time.

  181. At that moment in time, the Holy Spirit who comes in

  182. begins a process in you known as sanctification.

  183. That process of sanctification ends in glorification.

  184. You take your last breath.

  185. This is a one-time, instant-happening event.

  186. You are made like Jesus.

  187. That occurs when you die.

  188. Everything from death, physical, to death, spiritual,

  189. when you invited Christ into your heart,

  190. that's this process we call sanctification.

  191. The goal of sanctification, the Spirit of God is doing this in your life,

  192. Romans 8, 28.

  193. He's using everything that occurs, the good, the bad, the ugly,

  194. that which you lack to see happen, that which you didn't want to happen.

  195. He's using all those events to mold you and to fashion you

  196. into the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  197. But that doesn't perfectly culminate until your death

  198. and you are glorified in the presence of God.

  199. Sanctification is a lifelong process.

  200. Sanctification is a lifelong process.

  201. Both our hearts, and this is so important, get this,

  202. and our habits and our thoughts are being changed.

  203. Some folk think falsely that sanctification is just me changing my habits.

  204. But it's not.

  205. And some people get the mistaken idea

  206. that sanctification is just my mind and heart being changed

  207. and it doesn't matter so much about my habits.

  208. And both of those thoughts, that way of thinking, is wrong.

  209. Let me just tell you, if our hearts appear to have changed,

  210. I've got a new heart, a new spirit about me,

  211. but my actions don't,

  212. then I've not really genuinely repented.

  213. And Bonhoeffer, the World War II theologian,

  214. Bonhoeffer would say that where there is no real confession and repentance,

  215. there's no salvation.

  216. So it's not enough that my heart and mind change,

  217. but my actions don't.

  218. The evidence that my heart has really changed

  219. is that my actions change in the fashion of my heart.

  220. You understand that?

  221. The next thing I want to tell you is this.

  222. If my habits change,

  223. and this is the real danger in many churches,

  224. if my habits change but my heart doesn't,

  225. our holiness is a mere act.

  226. And I'm more interested in pleasing men

  227. than I am in pleasing God.

  228. And I want to tell you,

  229. I've witnessed that many, many times in churches.

  230. Somebody's going through a rough spot in their marriage

  231. and they say,

  232. this life's not working,

  233. I've got to change my ways.

  234. And so they go forward and they say,

  235. I want to receive Christ as my Savior.

  236. And guess what?

  237. They are afraid their marriage is going to end

  238. or there's something falling apart in their life.

  239. They're afraid of a lot of things.

  240. And they say this,

  241. I'm going to quit using preparerity.

  242. And I'm going to quit drinking.

  243. And I'm going to quit smoking.

  244. All those things that we think about as being sick.

  245. I'm going to quit this.

  246. I'm going to quit that.

  247. And I'll quit doing this.

  248. And I'll start going to church.

  249. And I'll attend Sunday school.

  250. And I'll give some money to the church.

  251. And I'll do all these things.

  252. And all their outward habits change.

  253. And people say,

  254. boy, that guy has cleaned up his life.

  255. And he appears to.

  256. But the problem is this.

  257. His heart never changed.

  258. And he's still just as mean and nasty on the inside

  259. as he ever was on the outside before that happened.

  260. And you've seen folk like that, right?

  261. You've seen them in church.

  262. You just wonder,

  263. how can they be a Christian

  264. because they do all these good things

  265. and they don't do anything morally wrong.

  266. But why do they mean as a rattlesnake?

  267. Jesus wasn't mean.

  268. Jesus wasn't cruel.

  269. Jesus wasn't hurtful.

  270. But boy, they're just mean-spirited.

  271. And when a man's heart doesn't change,

  272. but his outward actions do change,

  273. I'm going to tell you something.

  274. That's a guy who's wanting to impress people

  275. and not God.

  276. And there's a real problem

  277. when that occurs.

  278. Genuine holiness.

  279. Listen to this.

  280. It is the result of God changing our nature

  281. and making our choices,

  282. making the choice rather.

  283. He is leading us to make in life.

  284. That's how sanctification works.

  285. How real holiness works.

  286. God changes my mind and heart.

  287. And as a result of that,

  288. he begins to speak to me,

  289. here's how you ought to be living.

  290. And so as a desire to please him

  291. because I'm grateful for what he's done in my life,

  292. I listen to that voice.

  293. I don't rebuke that voice.

  294. I don't walk away from that voice.

  295. I obey that voice.

  296. And I begin as a result to be holy.

  297. Sanctification leads to purity.

  298. You need to get this.

  299. And not perfection.

  300. Sanctification leads to purity,

  301. but it doesn't lead to perfection.

  302. And I want to tell you,

  303. sometimes we mistakenly think that in the church

  304. and even teach that in the church

  305. and communicate to those outside the church.

  306. And that's why people who look at the church

  307. oftentimes think,

  308. what a bunch of phonies and hypocrites.

  309. Because you see,

  310. we look at them

  311. and we kind of convey this message

  312. that I'm just a little bit better than you

  313. because I don't smoke

  314. and I don't drink

  315. and I don't do all these things.

  316. And I'm just a cut above you.

  317. But they look at us

  318. in those low moments in our life

  319. where we give way to that old nature within us

  320. and they see us sin

  321. and they go,

  322. huh,

  323. he's just like me.

  324. And you know the message

  325. we ought to be communicating

  326. to the world all the time?

  327. I am just like you.

  328. I am just like you.

  329. I am a sinner.

  330. I'm capable of everything

  331. you're capable of.

  332. The difference is this,

  333. the grace of God

  334. has come into my life

  335. and he's forgiven my sin.

  336. It's not that I'm a sinner.

  337. We pretend sometimes to the world

  338. that we're not sinners

  339. and we are

  340. and we all know we are

  341. and we ought to be saying that to them.

  342. But the message of the gospel is

  343. through God's mercy

  344. we've been redeemed.

  345. We've been forgiven, right?

  346. But any of you perfect in this room?

  347. We're not perfect.

  348. Sanctification doesn't lead to perfection.

  349. Glorification will.

  350. But in this life,

  351. we're just not perfect.

  352. Genuine purity begins in our hearts.

  353. Listen to this.

  354. Permeates our minds.

  355. Captures our wills and attitude.

  356. Flows from our lips.

  357. Impacts our choices

  358. and treatment of other people.

  359. That's what happens

  360. when God begins to do a work in my life.

  361. He begins by changing my mind.

  362. He permeates my mind.

  363. He permeates my heart.

  364. It impacts my attitudes

  365. and my actions

  366. and my speech.

  367. And He takes over every aspect of my life.

  368. Genuine purity,

  369. this is important,

  370. is not simply adhering to dress,

  371. speech,

  372. or moral codes.

  373. It is a response of gratitude

  374. and obedience

  375. made to please

  376. a loving and gracious God.

  377. one last thing I want to say

  378. about this holiness

  379. and then I'm going to press on to something else.

  380. Unfortunately,

  381. many of us

  382. are better at acting

  383. holy

  384. than we are at

  385. being holy.

  386. Put the picture on the screen

  387. if you will.

  388. You recognize that gal?

  389. I can remember

  390. back when they

  391. really

  392. made this pretty famous

  393. Dana Carvey

  394. came up with this skit

  395. The Church Lady.

  396. It was on Saturday Night Live.

  397. I never saw it.

  398. I went to bed early.

  399. I would have seen it

  400. but I just

  401. I couldn't stay up that late

  402. and preach on Sunday mornings.

  403. But I want to tell you

  404. when he came out

  405. with that skit

  406. it just went

  407. in

  408. not the way they taught them

  409. but now

  410. it went viral, right?

  411. Everybody

  412. knew The Church Lady

  413. and everybody

  414. broke up

  415. over The Church Lady.

  416. Aren't you special?

  417. Right?

  418. Remember when he did that?

  419. And a lot of church folk

  420. got offended by it.

  421. I remember the first time

  422. I thought of it

  423. making fun of the church.

  424. And then I began to watch

  425. and I tell you something

  426. it was funny.

  427. You know why it was funny?

  428. It was funny to Americans

  429. everywhere

  430. because they have all

  431. met The Church Lady.

  432. That's right.

  433. I don't mean they met

  434. Dana Carvey.

  435. They met him in real life.

  436. There's one just about

  437. in every church.

  438. The Church Lady, right?

  439. Sometimes it's the church man

  440. not the Church Lady.

  441. Just as many men out there

  442. like that as there are women.

  443. But you know what I'm

  444. talking about.

  445. They just walk on a

  446. little higher plane

  447. than all the rest of us,

  448. don't they?

  449. They're just a little

  450. holier.

  451. It's not that they

  452. always condemn

  453. but they just always

  454. condescend.

  455. Isn't that right?

  456. They're just a little bit

  457. up here

  458. and you're kind of

  459. down here.

  460. The deal is

  461. it's not that they've

  462. mastered the art

  463. of holiness

  464. or purity.

  465. They've mastered

  466. in their mind

  467. the art of

  468. appearing holy

  469. and appearing

  470. pure.

  471. And you and I

  472. both know

  473. from real life

  474. experience

  475. boy there's a

  476. real difference

  477. in that.

  478. When you really

  479. are pure

  480. and holy

  481. can I tell you

  482. something?

  483. You'll be tempted

  484. to gossip

  485. when you hear

  486. the folk

  487. in the office

  488. place doing that

  489. but you'll hear

  490. this voice

  491. that says

  492. that's not

  493. Christ-like.

  494. You'll back

  495. away from that

  496. and you'll be

  497. driving down

  498. the road

  499. and that guy

  500. will do that

  501. thing that makes

  502. you so angry

  503. and you'll be

  504. tempted to

  505. set down the

  506. horn or to

  507. say something

  508. to him that

  509. you shouldn't

  510. and guess what?

  511. You hear the

  512. spirit of God

  513. within you

  514. and say you

  515. know what?

  516. That wouldn't

  517. be Christ-like.

  518. He loved me

  519. when

  520. I was just

  521. crazy as this

  522. guy.

  523. And you back

  524. away from that.

  525. That's the

  526. evidence of

  527. real purity

  528. and holiness

  529. is when the

  530. spirit of God

  531. prompts you

  532. and you listen

  533. to it

  534. and you say

  535. I'm not going

  536. to go there.

  537. You don't jump

  538. up and cut

  539. off the TV

  540. when the pastor

  541. knocks at the door

  542. and you see him

  543. through the glass

  544. because you don't

  545. want him to see

  546. you watching

  547. whatever it is

  548. you're watching.

  549. You get up

  550. when the pastor

  551. is not at your

  552. front door

  553. and you cut

  554. off the TV

  555. because you

  556. know you

  557. say to yourself

  558. that's just

  559. not something

  560. I need to see.

  561. That's not

  562. going to make

  563. me more

  564. Christ-like.

  565. You don't

  566. need somebody

  567. beating you

  568. over the head

  569. with a list

  570. of rules

  571. and regulations

  572. and saying

  573. do this

  574. and don't

  575. do that

  576. and you're

  577. okay.

  578. When I was

  579. a kid

  580. you know

  581. what Baptists

  582. thought by and

  583. large?

  584. You couldn't

  585. drink.

  586. You couldn't

  587. smoke.

  588. I'm not saying

  589. you should do

  590. those things

  591. now.

  592. But this

  593. was how we

  594. looked at

  595. holiness.

  596. You shouldn't

  597. drink.

  598. You shouldn't

  599. smoke.

  600. You shouldn't

  601. curse.

  602. You shouldn't

  603. go to the

  604. movies.

  605. You shouldn't

  606. fish on Sundays.

  607. You shouldn't

  608. eat out.

  609. You shouldn't

  610. we had a long

  611. list of

  612. shouldn'ts right?

  613. You shouldn't

  614. play cards.

  615. You can't do

  616. this.

  617. I knew a lady

  618. one time.

  619. She was from

  620. another denomination

  621. and she was

  622. a hairstylist

  623. and this

  624. pastor's wife

  625. who was of

  626. that same

  627. denomination

  628. would come

  629. see her on

  630. Saturday night

  631. and she would

  632. say would you

  633. trim my hair

  634. just a half

  635. an inch or

  636. an inch

  637. get the dead

  638. ends off.

  639. Just about

  640. every other

  641. week she'd

  642. do that.

  643. Because in

  644. that particular

  645. denomination

  646. at that time

  647. they wore

  648. their hair

  649. way up here.

  650. And you

  651. know why?

  652. I asked

  653. one time.

  654. I was a

  655. teenager and

  656. I was over

  657. at her house

  658. and I said

  659. why do all

  660. you wear it

  661. so high?

  662. And she

  663. said because

  664. we're not

  665. supposed to

  666. cut our

  667. hair.

  668. And I

  669. thought but

  670. your hair

  671. having your

  672. hair cut.

  673. Yeah but not

  674. so much

  675. anybody can

  676. tell.

  677. And I'm

  678. 17 years

  679. old and I'm

  680. thinking to

  681. myself so it

  682. really doesn't

  683. matter if you

  684. have your

  685. hair cut just

  686. so nobody

  687. tells you have

  688. your hair cut.

  689. Right?

  690. You see how

  691. crazy that is?

  692. Now we see

  693. that as Baptists

  694. because most of

  695. us don't wear

  696. hair cut and we

  697. laugh at it but

  698. don't taste it.

  699. We do just as

  700. stupid things as

  701. that.

  702. Where we think we

  703. can make ourselves

  704. look holy by

  705. following this

  706. long list of

  707. regulations and

  708. guidelines.

  709. Don't make us

  710. holy.

  711. You are holy

  712. from what comes

  713. out of your

  714. heart.

  715. You understand

  716. that?

  717. Because you

  718. have a heart

  719. for Jesus and

  720. you say I

  721. want to be

  722. obedient to

  723. Christ and I

  724. don't impure it

  725. in my life.

  726. It doesn't mean

  727. you won't mess

  728. up.

  729. You will mess

  730. up.

  731. But you

  732. immediately confess

  733. it to God and

  734. get right with

  735. Him again.

  736. That's what real

  737. genuine holiness

  738. looks like.

  739. I want you to

  740. look with me to

  741. Thessalonians chapter

  742. 4 the very next

  743. chapter.

  744. I want to read

  745. quickly eight

  746. verses.

  747. Verses one

  748. through eight.

  749. Finally then

  750. brothers we ask

  751. and encourage you

  752. in the Lord

  753. Jesus that you

  754. have received

  755. from us.

  756. You must walk

  757. and please God

  758. as you are

  759. doing.

  760. Do so even

  761. more.

  762. For you know

  763. what commands

  764. we gave you

  765. through the Lord

  766. Jesus.

  767. This is God's

  768. will, your

  769. sanctification, that

  770. you abstain from

  771. sexual immorality

  772. so that each one

  773. of you knows how

  774. to possess his own

  775. vessel in

  776. sanctification and

  777. honor.

  778. Not with lustful

  779. desires like the

  780. Gentiles who do

  781. not know God.

  782. This means one

  783. must not transgress

  784. against and defraud

  785. his brother in this

  786. matter because the

  787. Lord is an avenger of

  788. all these offenses as

  789. we also previously

  790. told and warned you.

  791. For God has not

  792. called us to impurity

  793. but to sanctification.

  794. Therefore the person

  795. who rejects this does

  796. not reject man but

  797. God who also gives

  798. you his spirit.

  799. Paul has prayed

  800. two things for

  801. these people.

  802. That they increase

  803. in love and

  804. overflow in love

  805. because he knows

  806. unless you do that

  807. the world is not

  808. going to believe

  809. your testimony.

  810. That's how Jesus

  811. lived.

  812. That's how you all

  813. live as ambassadors

  814. of Christ.

  815. But then he

  816. follows it up by

  817. this.

  818. You have to

  819. authenticate the

  820. message you're

  821. declaring and the

  822. way you do that is

  823. by living as holy

  824. and pure as

  825. Jesus was.

  826. And that's why he

  827. prays I pray you

  828. will be blameless

  829. in holiness when

  830. you stand before

  831. our God.

  832. Now some of you

  833. most of you

  834. probably won't but

  835. some of you will

  836. recall I said last

  837. week when I began

  838. this series I've

  839. got two expert

  840. witnesses or two

  841. expert folk I'm

  842. going to bring and

  843. let you hear what

  844. they have to say

  845. about how do you

  846. really do church

  847. right.

  848. Right.

  849. And we've been

  850. looking at Paul

  851. and Paul says I'm

  852. praying that you

  853. will increase in

  854. love and overflow

  855. and I'm praying

  856. that you will be

  857. holy and blameless.

  858. Let's bring up our

  859. second expert James.

  860. Remember that?

  861. James the pastor

  862. of the church in

  863. Jerusalem.

  864. Now I'm just going

  865. to point out one

  866. verse that James

  867. gives us because it

  868. is an incredibly

  869. great great great

  870. verse.

  871. If you have your

  872. Bibles turn with me

  873. to the book of

  874. James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  875. and let's just read

  876. one thing he says

  877. in verse 27.

  878. You ready?

  879. In fact let's go

  880. back and read verse

  881. 26 because it ties

  882. to it.

  883. Verse 26 and 27.

  884. Here we go.

  885. If anyone thinks

  886. he is religious

  887. without controlling

  888. his tongue but

  889. deceiving his heart

  890. his religion is

  891. useless.

  892. Now listen to

  893. what he says.

  894. I love this.

  895. Pure and undefiled

  896. religion.

  897. Just look up a

  898. minute.

  899. Have you ever

  900. wondered about

  901. that phrase?

  902. Pure and undefiled

  903. religion.

  904. What is true

  905. spirituality,

  906. true religion

  907. really like?

  908. You ever wonder

  909. when you go into

  910. church?

  911. Is this what it

  912. really should be?

  913. Is this what real

  914. spirituality looks

  915. like or we

  916. convinced ourselves

  917. this looks the way

  918. it should?

  919. But is it really?

  920. Well here's what he

  921. says.

  922. Pure religion and

  923. undefiled religion

  924. before our God and

  925. Father is this.

  926. And guess what?

  927. He's going to say

  928. two things.

  929. To look after

  930. orphans and

  931. widows in their

  932. distress and to

  933. keep oneself

  934. unstained by the

  935. world.

  936. Wow.

  937. Paul says I'm

  938. praying for you

  939. guys to be two

  940. things.

  941. To be loving and

  942. that you'll be

  943. holy.

  944. And James says

  945. you know what

  946. real religion is

  947. like?

  948. I mean real

  949. true religion

  950. cutting all the

  951. phony baloney

  952. out of it and

  953. look at the real

  954. heart of the

  955. matter.

  956. Here's what it

  957. is.

  958. To take care of

  959. widows and

  960. orphans.

  961. Now why would he

  962. say that?

  963. What does that

  964. mean?

  965. I want to ask

  966. you.

  967. Who are the

  968. most vulnerable

  969. people on the

  970. planet?

  971. Aren't they the

  972. youngest and the

  973. oldest?

  974. And especially the

  975. youngest who have

  976. no one to care for

  977. them.

  978. They're orphans.

  979. They've lost their

  980. mother and their

  981. father.

  982. How are they going

  983. to support

  984. themselves?

  985. They don't have

  986. a means of income.

  987. When you're talking

  988. about orphans,

  989. you're talking about

  990. the most vulnerable,

  991. the most in my

  992. opinion,

  993. vulnerable people on

  994. all of God's

  995. earth because they're

  996. children.

  997. They can't protect

  998. themselves physically,

  999. can't protect

  1000. themselves emotionally,

  1001. can't protect

  1002. themselves mentally,

  1003. intellectually.

  1004. People can take

  1005. advantage of them.

  1006. They don't have a

  1007. means of support.

  1008. James said, you

  1009. want to know what

  1010. real religion looks

  1011. like?

  1012. That you've got a

  1013. heart to take care

  1014. of the orphans.

  1015. the most easily

  1016. persecuted, put

  1017. down, offended

  1018. people on the face

  1019. of the earth.

  1020. And widows.

  1021. And who are these

  1022. widows?

  1023. Paul's already told

  1024. us in Timothy, when

  1025. it comes to widows,

1026. you know who you take

  1027. care of first?

  1028. Not all the widows,

  1029. but the widows who

  1030. have no children.

  1031. These elderly ladies

1032. or men, as the case

  1033. might be, who've lost

  1034. their spouse, and

  1035. they don't have

  1036. children.

  1037. Who's more vulnerable

  1038. than that other

  1039. than these orphans?

  1040. I mean, folks who

  1041. are on limited

  1042. income, they don't

  1043. have anybody to help

  1044. them, they're getting

  1045. older, life's harder,

  1046. there are more

  1047. difficulties on them.

  1048. You know what he's

  1049. saying?

  1050. He's saying the same

  1051. thing that Paul said.

  1052. He's emphasizing that

  1053. we love one another.

1054. I want you to take

  1055. care of those who

  1056. others have forgotten,

  1057. who've cast aside

  1058. who ostracize, who

  1059. are the beaten

  1060. down, the helpless.

  1061. He's talking about

  1062. loving people.

  1063. True religion is that

  1064. you lie folk, that

  1065. you just pour yourself

  1066. out in loving other

  1067. folk.

1068. Then he says this, and

1069. let me add one thing

  1070. he says, that you

  1071. keep yourself undefiled,

  1072. some translations have

  1073. it, unspotted, other

  1074. translations have it.

  1075. You know the

  1076. translation I like best

  1077. because it uses a

  1078. modern word?

  1079. Unpolluted.

  1080. You keep yourself

  1081. unpolluted from the

  1082. world.

  1083. Well, I don't know

  1084. about you, but that

1085. speaks to my heart in

  1086. the culture in which

  1087. we're living because I'm

  1088. going to tell you

  1089. something.

  1090. They're doing

  1091. everything they can in

  1092. our culture to pollute

  1093. our minds and our

  1094. lifestyles and to tell

1095. us that that which God

  1096. has always said is

1097. wrong is right and that

1098. which we have said is

  1099. right is wrong.

  1100. Isn't that true?

  1101. So, James says, boy,

1102. you're going to have to

1103. be real careful if you're

  1104. in the church because

  1105. pure religion is like

  1106. this.

  1107. You're living in this

  1108. world.

1109. You can't come out of

  1110. the world.

  1111. You're in the world.

1112. But don't let the world

  1113. pollute you.

  1114. Now, how does things

  1115. get polluted?

  1116. Either the contaminant

  1117. enters into that which

1118. is pure or that which is

  1119. pure passes through

  1120. something that is impure

  1121. and thereby becomes

  1122. contaminated.

  1123. Factories have these

  1124. chemicals.

  1125. They release them into

  1126. the stream.

1127. It gets into the water

  1128. and the pure water

  1129. becomes contaminated.

  1130. Or pure water passes

  1131. through something, a

  1132. stream, there's a dead

  1133. animal and it becomes

  1134. contaminated.

  1135. Or it passes through

  1136. rusty pipes, red

1137. zinc and all that and

  1138. it becomes contaminated.

  1139. Right?

  1140. We're living in the

  1141. world and the world's

  1142. doing everything it can

  1143. to contaminate us and

  1144. Paul says or James

  1145. says don't let that

  1146. happen.

  1147. You know what?

  1148. Same thing Paul said,

  1149. just a different way

  1150. of saying it.

  1151. Be blameless in holiness.

1152. I'm going to show you

  1153. one passage we're going

1154. as soon as I read this

1155. passage and then I give

  1156. you one illustration.

1157. Go with me to the last

1158. book of the Old Testament,

  1159. the book of Malachi.

  1160. Look at chapter 1,

  1161. verse 6.

1162. A son honors his father

1163. and a servant his master.

1164. Look up and just listen

  1165. a minute.

  1166. He's just making,

  1167. Malachi's just making a

  1168. statement that he knows,

  1169. everybody knows is

  1170. universally true.

1171. He's saying this to the

  1172. priest of Judah.

1173. He says a man honors his

  1174. father and a servant

  1175. honors his master.

  1176. We know that.

  1177. If I am a father,

  1178. where is my honor?

  1179. God's talking about

  1180. himself.

  1181. That's the reason that

  1182. pronoun my is

  1183. capitalized.

1184. He says so if I'm your

1185. father, why am I not

  1186. honored?

  1187. And then he says,

  1188. and if I am a master,

1189. where is your fear of me?

1190. Why don't you fear me?

  1191. Says the Lord.

  1192. Yet you ask,

  1193. the yet's the priest,

  1194. how have we despised

  1195. your name?

  1196. Can you see these

  1197. priests?

  1198. God's indicting them.

  1199. If I'm your father,

1200. why don't you honor me

  1201. as your father?

  1202. If I'm your master,

1203. why don't you fear me?

  1204. We do fear you.

1205. What do you mean we've

  1206. despised your name?

  1207. That's the question

  1208. they're asking.

  1209. How have we despised

  1210. your name?

  1211. Verse 7,

  1212. by presenting defiled

  1213. food on my altar,

  1214. you ask,

  1215. how have we defiled

  1216. you?

  1217. And then God responds,

1218. when you say the Lord's

  1219. table is contemptible,

1220. and then he gives them

  1221. an example.

1222. When you present a blind

  1223. animal for sacrifice,

  1224. is it not wrong?

1225. And when you present a

  1226. lame or sick animal,

  1227. is it not wrong?

  1228. Bring it to your

  1229. governor.

  1230. He says,

  1231. hey,

  1232. try that with your

  1233. governor,

  1234. your political leaders.

  1235. Would he be pleased

1236. with you or show you

  1237. favor?

  1238. Ask the Lord.

  1239. Of hosts.

  1240. He says,

  1241. you see,

  1242. you treat me

  1243. with disrespect.

  1244. Because you come to

  1245. my house,

  1246. and you say you're

  1247. coming to worship me

  1248. and honor me,

1249. and guess what you do?

  1250. You go into your

  1251. herd of sheep,

  1252. and you find those

  1253. sheep that are blind,

1254. and you come and say,

1255. this will do for God.

1256. It's good enough for Him.

  1257. And you offer this

  1258. blind sheep,

  1259. and you clearly see

  1260. what the Levitical law

  1261. called for.

  1262. It was a sheep

  1263. without spot or blemish.

  1264. And you get these

  1265. sick sheep,

  1266. or spotted sheep.

  1267. And you know

  1268. that's not kosher.

  1269. You know you

  1270. shouldn't be doing that.

  1271. But we can get

  1272. away with it.

  1273. What's God going to

  1274. say about it,

  1275. right?

  1276. Now just pause

1277. and put that on hold.

  1278. I invite you

  1279. to my house.

  1280. Let's say today

  1281. for lunch.

  1282. Okay?

1283. You get to my house,

1284. and I say to you,

  1285. what would you like

  1286. to drink?

  1287. You say,

1288. I'd like to have water,

  1289. if that's okay.

  1290. All right?

1291. And I go to the

  1292. refrigerator,

1293. and I pull out this

  1294. bottle of water.

1295. I just got to tell you,

  1296. there was pure water

  1297. in there,

  1298. but I put some

  1299. contaminants in it.

  1300. Okay?

  1301. Assume that they got

  1302. there because the

  1303. bottle was dirty,

  1304. maybe.

1305. But you don't have to

  1306. be a rocket scientist

  1307. to look at this

  1308. and know that's not

  1309. good water.

  1310. Right?

  1311. Anybody here want

  1312. a sip of this?

  1313. I won't tell you

  1314. what I contaminated

  1315. it with,

  1316. but it's contaminated.

  1317. You just take my

  1318. word for it,

  1319. okay?

  1320. It's contaminated

  1321. water.

1322. So if I set this

  1323. in front of you

  1324. and say,

  1325. here,

  1326. have this.

  1327. You think you'd

  1328. drink it?

  1329. You maybe would

  1330. say,

  1331. have you lost

  1332. your mind?

  1333. Or if you're

  1334. a real plight,

  1335. you just say,

  1336. hmm,

  1337. I'm not too thirsty.

  1338. Right?

  1339. And you'd never

  1340. touch it.

  1341. And then you see

  1342. me go to the

  1343. refrigerator,

  1344. and I pull out

  1345. these two bottles

  1346. of water.

  1347. And I give one

  1348. to my wife,

  1349. and I take one,

  1350. and you say,

  1351. well,

  1352. why didn't he

  1353. give me that?

  1354. Right?

  1355. So I'm going to

  1356. tell you,

  1357. you can have

  1358. one of these,

  1359. because they

  1360. both contain

  1361. nothing but

  1362. water.

  1363. Okay?

  1364. But I've got to

  1365. tell you,

  1366. one of these,

  1367. I've got little

  1368. dots on the top.

  1369. One of these,

  1370. I know,

  1371. is clean,

  1372. pure water,

  1373. just the way

  1374. it was packaged.

  1375. But the other

  1376. one is an empty

  1377. bottle that I

  1378. filled with water.

  1379. Did I tell you

  1380. how water went

  1381. out the other

  1382. day?

  1383. So I had to

  1384. fill this with

  1385. water from

  1386. my toilet.

  1387. But now,

  1388. we keep

  1389. clean toilets.

  1390. It was clean

  1391. a couple weeks

  1392. ago.

  1393. So here's my

  1394. question to you.

  1395. You're going to

  1396. take a chance

  1397. of guessing

  1398. which one is

  1399. contaminated water,

  1400. because it looks

  1401. just like the

  1402. other one.

  1403. It looks exactly

  1404. like the other

  1405. one.

  1406. You won't

  1407. come and look

  1408. at it,

  1409. put it under

  1410. my scope,

  1411. see any

  1412. difference.

  1413. They're the

  1414. same.

  1415. They look the

  1416. same.

  1417. But we know

  1418. this one is

  1419. real,

  1420. pure,

  1421. clean water,

  1422. and one of

  1423. them is

  1424. contaminated

  1425. water.

  1426. And I want

  1427. to tell you

  1428. something.

  1429. Every one of

  1430. us in this

  1431. room today,

  1432. your life's in

  1433. one of these

  1434. three shapes.

  1435. Either you

  1436. can look at it,

  1437. and other people

  1438. can look at it

  1439. and say,

  1440. yeah,

  1441. that guy's not

  1442. holy.

  1443. that's

  1444. contaminated

  1445. water.

  1446. Or,

  1447. you're like

  1448. one of these.

  1449. One looks like

  1450. the real

  1451. article,

  1452. because it's

  1453. pure and

  1454. clean,

  1455. and it's

  1456. good for you

  1457. to drink.

  1458. But the

  1459. other,

  1460. I got news

  1461. for you,

  1462. it just

  1463. looks that

  1464. way.

  1465. It's not

  1466. really clean.

  1467. But here's

  1468. what the

  1469. sad thing

  1470. is,

  1471. every week

  1472. when we

  1473. come to

  1474. church,

  1475. a lot

  1476. of us,

  1477. we just

  1478. put that

  1479. up there,

  1480. and we're

  1481. okay with

  1482. it,

  1483. because it

  1484. looks clean.

  1485. I mean,

  1486. nobody can

  1487. tell.

  1488. I can't

  1489. tell.

  1490. He's your

  1491. pastor.

  1492. I can't

  1493. tell.

  1494. Ryan can't

  1495. tell.

  1496. You can't

  1497. tell about

  1498. us.

  1499. But I'll

  1500. tell you,

  1501. God always

  1502. knows.

  1503. He always

  1504. knows.

  1505. He looks

  1506. and He

  1507. knows what's

  1508. the real

  1509. deal.

  1510. Whether there's

  1511. real holiness

  1512. and purity,

  1513. and He

  1514. knows where

  1515. it's not.

  1516. And I'm

  1517. going to

  1518. tell you

  1519. something.

  1520. If you

  1521. want anything

  1522. for your

  1523. church in

  1524. the days

  1525. to come,

  1526. you need

  1527. to be

  1528. concerned about

  1529. getting a

  1530. pastor,

  1531. but more

  1532. than anything

  1533. else,

  1534. you need

  1535. to be

  1536. concerned.

  1537. We're a

  1538. church that

  1539. loves,

  1540. really,

  1541. genuinely

  1542. loves.

  1543. Let me

  1544. just say

  1545. that we

  1546. really love

  1547. other people.

  1548. And secondly,

  1549. that we're

  1550. holy.

  1551. That we're

  1552. pure.

  1553. Not that

  1554. kind of flashy

  1555. holiness that

  1556. you wear on

  1557. your sleeve,

  1558. that calls

  1559. attention to

  1560. yourself,

  1561. that says,

  1562. look at me,

  1563. how holy I

  1564. am,

  1565. but that

  1566. kind of

  1567. holiness that

  1568. results in

  1569. integrity and

  1570. character of

  1571. life and

  1572. loves people

  1573. and is

  1574. honest and

  1575. is godly and

  1576. is pure and

  1577. who does the

  1578. right thing

  1579. because it

  1580. doesn't matter

  1581. who's looking

  1582. other than

  1583. God.

  1584. I'm doing

  1585. this because I

  1586. know God's

  1587. looking.

  1588. And that's all

  1589. it has to be,

  1590. just know that

  1591. He's looking.

  1592. That's all that

  1593. matters.

  1594. So I don't

  1595. have to brag

  1596. about the

  1597. holiness.

  1598. I don't have

  1599. to put it on

  1600. display for

  1601. anybody.

  1602. You don't

  1603. have to show

  1604. it off for

  1605. anybody.

  1606. Now,

  1607. of course,

  1608. if I tell you,

  1609. asking you

  1610. this,

  1611. that kind of

  1612. holiness you

  1613. got today.

  1614. I haven't

  1615. been here long,

  1616. but I've been

  1617. here three

  1618. months and

  1619. long enough to

  1620. know this.

  1621. You're a

  1622. sweet,

  1623. wonderful people

  1624. and I love

  1625. you.

  1626. You can

  1627. believe I'm

  1628. just saying

  1629. that.

  1630. It's the

  1631. truth.

  1632. I've told

  1633. everybody I

  1634. know I

  1635. love

  1636. first pick

  1637. and

  1638. if I was

  1639. a young

  1640. guy,

  1641. I'd be

  1642. putting my

  1643. name in

  1644. that pile.

  1645. I love

  1646. this church.

  1647. But I've

  1648. come to find

  1649. this out

  1650. about you.

  1651. be demonstrative

  1652. about what's

  1653. going on in

  1654. your life

  1655. spiritually.

  1656. And that's

  1657. okay.

  1658. That's okay.

  1659. You don't

  1660. have to

  1661. respond to

  1662. every invitation.

  1663. You don't

  1664. have to go

  1665. and stand

  1666. at the

  1667. altar all

  1668. the time.

  1669. But I'm

  1670. going to

  1671. tell you

  1672. what is

  1673. important.

  1674. You do

  1675. business

  1676. with God.

  1677. You be

  1678. honest with

  1679. God.

  1680. And you

  1681. know today

  1682. which of

  1683. these two

  1684. bottles you

  1685. are.

  1686. And if

  1687. you're that

  1688. one that

  1689. looks holy,

  1690. you're

  1691. going to

  1692. pass the

  1693. test.

  1694. The eye

  1695. test.

  1696. And I'm

  1697. going to

  1698. tell you

  1699. something.

  1700. You need

  1701. to be doing

  1702. some business

  1703. with God

  1704. right now

  1705. because if

  1706. you want

  1707. your church

  1708. to be the

  1709. church it

  1710. needs to

  1711. be, you

  1712. need to

  1713. be people

  1714. who genuinely

  1715. are holy.

  1716. And I

  1717. don't know

  1718. that about

  1719. you anymore

  1720. than you

  1721. know it

  1722. about me.

  1723. I could be

  1724. a fake

  1725. and a phony

  1726. and you

  1727. wouldn't tell

  1728. it just by

  1729. listening to

  1730. me preach.

  1731. But you

  1732. know about

  1733. you and I

  1734. know about

  1735. me and

  1736. you're going

  1737. to have to

  1738. ask,

  1739. am I the

  1740. real deal?

  1741. Am I what

  1742. God wants

  1743. me to be?

  1744. And if

  1745. not, right

  1746. now is a

  1747. good time

  1748. to make

  1749. that right.

  1750. And it

  1751. begins by

  1752. just doing

  1753. this.

  1754. God, I'm

  1755. sorry, I've

  1756. been more

  1757. concerned about

  1758. what people

  1759. think than

  1760. you think.

  1761. And I want

  1762. you to change

  1763. that.

  1764. I want you to

  1765. do it.

  1766. I can't do

  1767. it.

  1768. I'm just

  1769. too big a

  1770. sinner.

  1771. But I'm

  1772. asking you to

  1773. do a work

  1774. in me.

  1775. I'm asking

  1776. you to

  1777. shape my

  1778. heart, change

  1779. my thinking,

  1780. change my

  1781. attitudes.

  1782. change.

  1783. I want to

  1784. be the real

  1785. deal for

  1786. you.

  1787. We're going

  1788. to have

  1789. Brian come

  1790. and sing

  1791. one verse

  1792. of an

  1793. invitation.

  1794. Maybe you

  1795. need to get

  1796. up and come

  1797. and just

  1798. kneel somewhere

  1799. along the

  1800. surface.

  1801. Maybe you

  1802. just right

  1803. there at your

  1804. seat, just

  1805. kneel.

  1806. Maybe you

  1807. just stay

  1808. seated or

  1809. be seated

  1810. after we

  1811. stand.

  1812. But I

  1813. urge you to

  1814. do business

  1815. with God.

  1816. Let's

  1817. stand as we

  1818. hear Brian

  1819. sing this

  1820. hymn of

  1821. invitation.

  1822. Join

  1823. him if

  1824. you'd like

  1825. to.

  1826. Bye.

  1827. Bye.
