  1. Well, today I'm going to finish up this three-part series we began two weeks ago,

  2. and it's been on what kind of church do we want to be.

  3. It's found in 1 Thessalonians 3.

  4. If you have your Bibles, turn there, and we'll begin there this morning

  5. looking at that last verse, the 13th verse,

  6. and then part of chapter 4 and just a verse or 2 in chapter 5.

  7. So go ahead and turn there, and if you're just now joining us,

  8. let me just bring you up to speed in about one minute or less, okay?

  9. Here's what we've seen so far.

  10. The Apostle Paul is on his second missionary journey.

  11. He's had to flee the city of Philippi.

  12. He goes to Thessalonica, the target of this message series

  13. and this letter that we're reading today,

  14. and he preaches there on three consecutive Sabbaths.

  15. A number of people hear the gospel, respond to it favorably,

  16. and then after the third service they have, Paul has to leave town.

  17. Members of the church come and tell him his life's in danger

  18. and he needs to get out of Dodge, so to speak.

  19. So he goes to the next town and he keeps wanting to go back

  20. because he knows why there are folk there who are showing positive signs of believing in Christ.

  21. They're beginning to grow in their faith.

  22. These are babies in the Lord.

  23. They haven't known the Lord very long.

  24. He's taught them everything he can teach them in three weeks,

  25. but he knows that's not a finished work,

  26. and so he worries about them.

  27. Are they going to fall by the wayside?

  28. What's going to happen?

  29. Are they going to get discouraged?

  30. Will persecution cause them to abandon the faith?

  31. So he says in chapter 3, verse 1, and then later in verse 5,

  32. he says,

  33. I've wanted to come back to you any number of times,

  34. but when that wouldn't happen,

  35. when I could stand it no longer is the actual phrase he uses,

  36. I send Timothy back.

  37. Timothy goes back, talks to the folk there in Thessalonica,

  38. hears about what's going on,

  39. comes back and reports to Paul beginning in verse 10.

  40. And what he says to him, or verses 6 to 10, I think it is,

  41. and what he says to him essentially is this,

  42. these people have not fallen by the wayside.

  43. They've not gotten discouraged and given up.

  44. They're still seeking the Lord Jesus.

  45. In fact, they're growing in their love for one another

  46. and for people throughout the region.

  47. They're beginning to be known as a people

  48. with a reputation for loving folk,

  49. and these are people who are walking with God.

  50. So Paul's encouraged by that, obviously,

  51. and he writes back and he gives them a written prayer.

  52. He says, I want you to know, here's what I'm praying for you.

  53. And that's been the focus of this three-week series.

  54. What kind of church do we want to be?

  55. I think we can tell by the prayer that Paul prays

  56. the kind of church we need to be.

  57. This is what he says.

  58. He says, I'm praying that you will be filled with love

  59. and even overflow.

  60. He tells me you're growing in love, keep growing in love,

  61. but be filled and actually overflow with love.

  62. And then last week we saw he said this,

  63. I want you also to walk blameless in holiness.

  64. Now, some folk, the Jews, knew about holiness

  65. because they heard the Pharisees talk,

  66. and the Pharisees wore their religion on their sleeve.

  67. They acted holier than they really were.

  68. So Paul says, I'm not interested in that kind of holiness.

  69. I want you to have the hidden, true holiness,

  70. purity of the heart that's seen in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  71. Well, he finishes this out with a single phrase.

  72. Look with me to the last portion of this,

  73. found in chapter 3 and verse 13.

  74. This is what he says.

  75. May he make your hearts blameless in holiness

  76. before our God and Father.

  77. And then this phrase,

  78. at the coming of our Lord Jesus,

  79. with all of his saints, amen.

  80. The third part of this to me seems to be

  81. that Paul wants these people in Thessalonica

  82. to be ready for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  83. Now, I want to tell you, when you read the scriptures,

  84. you see some of these letters that Paul writes,

  85. and you say, now that's a pastor,

  86. that's a church I like to pastor.

  87. And some you see and you say,

  88. no, that's a church I like to not have to pastor

  89. unless God just made me go there,

  90. the Church of Corinth being one of those.

  91. But this church at Thessalonica,

  92. I want to tell you,

  93. most every pastor I know would say,

  94. I would love to be the pastor of the church of Thessalonica.

  95. But it wasn't a church,

  96. and there are hardly any churches,

  97. if any out there,

  98. that don't have occasionally a problem.

  99. And this church was no exception.

  100. As good a church as they were,

  101. as loving as they were,

  102. as pure and holy in their walk as they were,

  103. this was a church that had a few problems.

  104. And it may surprise you,

  105. if you're not familiar with this letter,

  106. what their problem centered around.

  107. Because when I tell you,

  108. some of you, if you don't know this already,

  109. you're going to say,

  110. that's a strange thing to have a problem over.

  111. But you know what their problem was over?

  112. It was over something Paul said in a sermon,

  113. probably several times,

  114. that Jesus is going to soon come again.

  115. Now, it's amazing,

  116. because you've talked to folk a lot of times

  117. about a variety of subjects,

  118. how one person,

  119. when you're talking to them,

  120. hears one thing,

  121. and somebody else hears another.

  122. You ever had that happen?

  123. Four or five family members

  124. accompany a parent to the doctor,

  125. and the doctor gives a report on a health situation,

  126. and you get home and you begin rehearsing,

  127. what did the doctor say?

  128. And one person hears one thing,

  129. and another person hears another thing,

  130. and one person interprets that thing one way,

  131. and another person interprets it yet another way.

  132. Any of you ever had that happen?

  133. So Paul stands and he preaches,

  134. and he says,

  135. Jesus is coming again,

  136. and he's coming soon.

  137. Now, some people heard that,

  138. and they thought,

  139. well, that means one day,

  140. Jesus is going to come again.

  141. Again, probably,

  142. probably,

  143. can't verify this,

  144. there's no documentation of this,

  145. but in all likelihood,

  146. most of those folk thought,

  147. when they heard Paul say it,

  148. Jesus hadn't been gone all that many years,

  149. it's probably going to be in my lifetime.

  150. Wouldn't you agree?

  151. Probably what they thought.

  152. But some of them thought,

  153. well, it may be after my lifetime.

  154. And some may have thought,

  155. well, you know,

  156. it may be next year,

  157. or the year after that.

  158. And some, no doubt,

  159. you know what they did?

  160. They were literalists.

  161. I don't want to ask you

  162. how many of you in this room are literalists,

  163. but sometimes,

  164. some of you might hear something like that,

  165. especially if said by the Apostle Paul,

  166. and you would go,

  167. okay, it's been five minutes,

  168. six minutes,

  169. two hours.

  170. He's not back yet.

  171. When's he coming?

  172. And some of them in the church at Thessalonica,

  173. not nearly all of them,

  174. but some of them in the church,

  175. enough that it was problemsome,

  176. some of them heard that,

  177. and they thought,

  178. why hadn't he come back?

  179. In fact, let me just ask you,

  180. how many of you in this room right now

  181. have ever heard a preacher say,

  182. Jesus is coming,

  183. and I believe it could be soon?

  184. You ever heard that?

  185. Raise your hand.

  186. I know Fred said that.

  187. I've said it.

  188. A lot of folk have said that, right?

  189. I'm 69.

  190. He's not come back yet.

  191. I've been hearing it since I was a little bitty boy.

  192. And I've had folk ask me all the time,

  193. when do you think it could be?

  194. Especially in these times we're living in now,

  195. with a lot that's happening,

  196. I've had any number of people in the last 12 months

  197. come to me and say,

  198. do you think all these things point to the fact

  199. that Jesus is coming again soon, right?

  200. So we've all had questions about that.

  201. And these people were no different.

  202. They wondered,

  203. well, if he's coming,

  204. you said he was coming,

  205. when's he going to come?

  206. Let me share with you three problems

  207. that arose from their misunderstanding

  208. of what Paul said.

  209. First of all,

  210. some, when they heard him say that,

  211. you know their response?

  212. Well, let's just sit down

  213. and wait for him to come.

  214. I mean, let's just sit down

  215. and watch the clouds,

  216. maybe move to the mountains,

  217. don a white robe,

  218. stop what we're doing,

  219. and just wait until he comes

  220. because surely it's going to be tomorrow,

  221. if not today,

  222. and if not tomorrow,

  223. day after tomorrow.

  224. So some of them just said,

  225. we're going to sit down

  226. and we're going to wait.

  227. Do you know that since the Lord left

  228. and we've been awaiting his return,

  229. there have been certain sects

  230. and certain cults

  231. and certain even groups of folk

  232. within the family of God

  233. who have so looked for his coming,

  234. they have done exactly that.

  235. They have gone off to the mountains.

  236. They've donned white robes on occasion.

  237. And they've said,

  238. we're going to stop our jobs.

  239. We're going to just stop living.

  240. And we're going to wait

  241. because we think he's coming on this day.

  242. Some of you can remember

  243. just a few years ago

  244. when one fellow predicted

  245. this particular day,

  246. this particular moment,

  247. Jesus is going to come again.

  248. And so some folk have done that.

  249. I want you to listen

  250. to what Paul says about that.

  251. Go with me if you have your Bibles.

  252. Look with me to the fourth chapter

  253. and let's begin reading in verse nine.

  254. About brotherly love,

  255. you don't need me to write you

  256. because you yourselves

  257. are taught by God to love one another.

  258. They're doing well there.

  259. In fact, you're doing this

  260. toward all the brothers

  261. in the entire region of Macedonia.

  262. But we encourage you, brothers,

  263. to do so even more.

  264. Now, I don't know how many of you

  265. write in your Bibles,

  266. and this is a passage

  267. that some people might consider obscure.

  268. It doesn't say anything

  269. real holy sounding.

  270. But can I admonish you to do something?

  271. If you write in your Bibles,

  272. underscore every word in verse 11

  273. and even verse 12.

  274. Here's what it says.

  275. To seek to lead a quiet life.

  276. Paul said,

  277. let this be your ambition

  278. to seek to lead a quiet life.

  279. Here's a real portion

  280. I want you to underscore.

  281. To mind your own business.

  282. That's a pretty good one, isn't it?

  283. To seek to lead a quiet life,

  284. to mind your own business,

  285. and to work with your own hands

  286. as we commanded you.

  287. In other words,

  288. don't forget,

  289. I told you.

  290. I didn't tell you to sit down.

  291. I told you to work.

  292. I told you to be busy.

  293. So that you may walk properly

  294. in the presence of outsiders,

  295. and this is a big thing,

  296. and not be dependent on anyone.

  297. You know the problem

  298. about just sitting down

  299. and saying,

  300. you know what?

  301. I'm going to be so holy,

  302. I'm just going to sit and wait

  303. and watch on Jesus to come.

  304. I'm going to think about nothing

  305. but His second coming,

  306. and my eyes are going to be focused

  307. on the clouds,

  308. and that way I won't get in trouble,

  309. and I'll be ready when He comes,

  310. and there's nothing better

  311. than I can do that.

  312. You know the problem with that?

  313. When you sit idle very long,

  314. what happens?

  315. Because you don't have anything

  316. to do in your life,

  317. you'll begin to mess

  318. with other folks' lives.

  319. Have you ever said

  320. about somebody you know,

  321. and don't look at them right now,

  322. don't point at them,

  323. have you ever said,

  324. they need to get a life?

  325. Because they just are constantly

  326. meddling in other folks' business

  327. and other folks' lives.

  328. They got too much time

  329. on their hands.

  330. They need to be busier.

  331. You ever thought that?

  332. I know you have.

  333. You don't have to do this right now,

  334. but you know what I'm talking about, right?

  335. Some folks are just idle,

  336. and they're busybodies,

  337. and they meddle in other folks' business,

  338. and it always leads to trouble

  339. in the church,

  340. in the home,

  341. in the community.

  342. And Paul says,

  343. man, don't do that.

  344. And here's another problem with it.

  345. If I sit and just wait on Jesus to come,

  346. how am I going to feed myself?

  347. Because I'm not going to stop eating.

  348. And how am I going to keep a roof

  349. over my head

  350. and over my family's head

  351. and clothes on our backs?

  352. You know what's going to happen?

  353. In the name of holiness and religion,

  354. I'm going to become a burden

  355. to folk around me.

  356. And Paul says,

  357. man, don't do that.

  358. Make it your ambition

  359. to lead a quiet life,

  360. to mind your own business,

  361. to work with your hands

  362. so that you don't become dependent

  363. on other folk.

  364. I'm going to tell you,

  365. work is good for everybody.

  366. Amen?

  367. Everybody ought to work.

  368. And even though you retire,

  369. man, you ought to stay busy.

  370. If your idea of retirement

  371. is to say,

  372. I'm going to just sit down

  373. and let people take care of me

  374. from here on out.

  375. I'm going to let the government

  376. take care of me.

  377. I'm going to let people

  378. take care of me.

  379. I just don't have care in the world.

  380. It's everybody else's responsibility.

  381. Man, I'm going to tell you,

  382. you need to get a life.

  383. You need to get a life.

  384. And that's what Paul says.

  385. There was a second problem.

  386. And the second problem

  387. probably was a greater problem

  388. than even the first problem.

  389. The second problem was

  390. some began worrying

  391. about their loved ones

  392. who had died

  393. before Jesus came back.

  394. Now, think with me.

  395. Paul said,

  396. hey, here's what's going to happen.

  397. Jesus came and he lived

  398. and he died

  399. and he rose from the dead.

  400. And that's the reason

  401. for our hope in the gospel.

  402. You trust in him,

  403. you have eternal life.

  404. And one day he's going to come again

  405. and he's going to take us

  406. all up to be with him, right?

  407. And they all applauded and said,

  408. man, that is great.

  409. Can't wait.

  410. But guess what happened?

  411. Same thing happens

  412. in Pickens and Greer.

  413. Today, as soon as this service is over,

  414. I've got a 2.30 funeral

  415. I've got to be off too.

  416. I'll tell you something.

  417. Folk began to die.

  418. And they die here in Pickens.

  419. And you don't have to wait

  420. years for them to die.

  421. In the 16 weeks or so,

  422. I've been the interim pastor

  423. here at Pickens,

  424. there have been a number of people

  425. in your congregation

  426. who passed

  427. and loved ones related to people

  428. in your congregation

  429. who passed, right?

  430. And Thessalonica was no different.

  431. Somebody's wife died.

  432. Somebody's husband died.

  433. Somebody's best friend died.

  434. Somebody's partner in business died.

  435. And they began saying,

  436. no, wait a second.

  437. You said if we trusted Jesus,

  438. gave my heart,

  439. we'd have eternal life.

  440. Jesus is going to come again.

  441. He's going to take us out of this world

  442. and to be with Him.

  443. But they've died

  444. before He could get back.

  445. So, what's up with these folk?

  446. Listen to what Paul says about that.

  447. Look with me, if you will,

  448. to chapter 4 and verse 13.

  449. We do not want you

  450. to be uninformed brothers

  451. concerning those who are asleep.

  452. Now, that's a metaphor for dead.

  453. He's not talking about

  454. they fall asleep.

  455. He's talking about

  456. they're graveyard dead.

  457. So that you will not grieve

  458. like the rest

  459. who have no hope.

  460. He says, listen,

  461. people of Thessalonica,

  462. I don't want you to be ignorant

  463. about death

  464. and about what happens

  465. to people after death.

  466. Because I don't want you

  467. to grieve like those folk

  468. who have no hope.

  469. Now, I want to tell you,

  470. I've seen believers

  471. through the years,

  472. I don't encounter this often,

  473. but I've seen it on occasion

  474. where believers think

  475. that for me to be

  476. a good Christian,

  477. I dare not show any emotion

  478. if anybody in my family dies.

  479. Especially if they die tragically.

  480. That I'm supposed to suck it up

  481. and put on my game face

  482. and go out there

  483. and just be all smiles and cheery

  484. and stand before everybody.

  485. And a good testimony is,

  486. hey, you know what?

  487. They died,

  488. they've gone to glory

  489. and I'm okay with it.

  490. I'm not hurting,

  491. I'm alright.

  492. God's taking care of me

  493. and I'm alright.

  494. But that's not what

  495. he's saying at all.

  496. He's not saying

  497. that we shouldn't grieve,

  498. we just shouldn't grieve

  499. like people who have no hope.

  500. There's a difference

  501. in how you grieve.

  502. Do you understand that?

  503. I can grieve,

  504. but still have hope.

  505. And that grief looks different

  506. than when I grieve

  507. and I don't have any hope.

  508. When I don't have any hope,

  509. I'm ready to jump out a window

  510. because I'm desperate.

  511. I mean,

  512. there is no tomorrow

  513. when I don't have any hope.

  514. But if I have hope,

  515. it's different.

  516. Let me show you

  517. what I'm talking about.

  518. Our son, Matthew,

  519. he marries a girl

  520. named Carla Smith

  521. five or six,

  522. seven years down the way.

  523. She gets pregnant,

  524. they have a baby, right?

  525. Right before they have the baby,

  526. they move off to St. Louis.

  527. He's managing the store

  528. for Chick-fil-A.

  529. They send him out there

  530. to shut one down.

  531. He stays a few months.

  532. He moves back to Greenville

  533. just before the baby's born.

  534. We were so delighted, right?

  535. The baby's born,

  536. Scout, my firstborn,

  537. I want you to meet her sometime.

  538. Great, beautiful gal,

  539. 15 years old now,

  540. little baby then.

  541. I'd go out on Wednesday nights

  542. after I do prayer meeting

  543. and I'd go to their apartment

  544. and I'd say,

  545. can I hold Scout?

  546. And he was working,

  547. his wife was there

  548. and she'd say, sure.

  549. And so I'd sit in the living room

  550. all by myself,

  551. hold that baby in the rocking chair

  552. and rock her

  553. and just talk to her

  554. and sing to her

  555. and tell her how much I loved her

  556. and keep looking for her

  557. to tell me,

  558. I love you too, Papa.

  559. We've all done that, right?

  560. So a few months down the way,

  561. he comes to me,

  562. he says,

  563. Dad,

  564. they're reassigned me

  565. to a store in Williamsburg,

  566. Virginia.

  567. It's a great opportunity,

  568. brand new store,

  569. good community

  570. and I'm going to manage that store

  571. and it's just a great opportunity.

  572. I said, well, I understand that.

  573. He said,

  574. I've got to go do that.

  575. I know you'll be heartbroken

  576. but I just,

  577. I need to tell you,

  578. I've got to go do that.

  579. I understand perfectly.

  580. I said, now,

  581. let me just ask you,

  582. how often will you get to come home

  583. and see Scout

  584. because she's staying with us?

  585. Now, you know,

  586. he can't do that, right?

  587. So I remember just like it was yesterday,

  588. it was about 15 years ago,

  589. we step outside,

  590. we walked out,

  591. we've hugged them,

  592. we put them in the car,

  593. they're only going to be seven hours away.

  594. We put them in the car

  595. and I've put on my game face

  596. and I've hugged them all

  597. and I'm smiling,

  598. wishing them well,

  599. they back out

  600. and they don't hit the curb

  601. going out of my driveway

  602. until tears are just pouring down my face.

  603. I mean, I'm just crying

  604. and I'm just sobbing,

  605. I'm broken hearted.

  606. She's just seven hours away

  607. but I'm broken hearted.

  608. You know what?

  609. Not because I thought,

  610. well, that's so far,

  611. I'll never get to see her again

  612. because I'm going to tell you something,

  613. within about three weeks,

  614. I jumped in my car one Friday,

  615. drove all the way up there

  616. and saw her

  617. and came all the way back.

  618. But the tears were because I love her

  619. and momentarily we're separated

  620. and that's why I'm going to cry

  621. if something happens to my wife

  622. or my dad or my sister or brother

  623. or my children or my friends.

  624. I'm going to be sad

  625. but it's a different kind of sadness.

  626. It's a sadness that's tempered by the fact

  627. this is not the end.

  628. I'm just saying goodbye moment

  629. but it still hurts.

  630. You understand that?

  631. So,

  632. when someone passes you a life,

  633. grieve for them.

  634. Just don't grieve like people

  635. who have no hope.

  636. Listen to what he says,

  637. Since we believe that Jesus died

  638. and rose again,

  639. in the same way God will bring with him

  640. those who have fallen asleep through Jesus.

  641. For we say this to you

  642. by revelation from the Lord,

  643. we who are still alive at the Lord's coming

  644. will certainly have no advantage,

  645. no advantage,

  646. over those who have fallen asleep.

  647. For the Lord himself

  648. will descend from heaven with a shout,

  649. with the archangel's voice,

  650. and with the trumpet of God

  651. and the dead in Christ will rise first.

  652. Then we who are still alive

  653. will be caught up together

  654. with him in the clouds

  655. to meet the Lord in the air.

  656. And so will we always be with the Lord.

  657. Therefore,

  658. encourage one another

  659. with these words.

  660. And those are encouraging words,

  661. aren't they?

  662. Paul says,

  663. Listen,

  664. you don't need to worry about it.

  665. Here's what's going to happen.

  666. The archangel's going to sound the voice.

  667. The trumpet will blow.

  668. Jesus will come.

  669. Those who have died,

  670. they're going to be raised first.

  671. And they're going to meet all of us

  672. who are living at the time

  673. when the Lord comes

  674. and he's going to take us

  675. to heaven to be with him.

  676. And that's where we'll be forever.

  677. That's an encouraging word,

  678. isn't it?

  679. Amen?

  680. Boy,

  681. I love that word from Paul.

  682. Well,

  683. there's a third problem.

  684. Some became obsessed

  685. with knowing

  686. when he was coming.

  687. I pastored

  688. a number of churches now,

  689. been interim

  690. at a number of places.

  691. Can I tell you something?

  692. In every church

  693. I've ever been

  694. very long at all,

  695. I've met some folk

  696. who almost are obsessed

  697. with when he's coming.

  698. You've known some folk

  699. like that, right?

  700. I mean,

  701. all they can think about

  702. is

  703. when is it going to be?

  704. These signs

  705. we're looking at today

  706. point to the

  707. time of the coming

  708. of the Lord Jesus.

  709. Our country's in trouble.

  710. You know that, right?

  711. I know that.

  712. And a lot of folk

  713. have come

  714. in these troubled times

  715. and said,

  716. do you think

  717. this means

  718. this is

  719. the beginning

  720. of the end?

  721. I'll tell you something.

  722. Everything seems to me

  723. to be pointing to it,

  724. but I want to warn you

  725. about something.

  726. Keep perspective.

  727. Nations

  728. like the United States

  729. of America

  730. have come and gone

  731. throughout history.

  732. And if the Lord

  733. tarries

  734. a thousand years,

  735. there'll be a

  736. string of other nations,

  737. saints,

  738. including this one,

  739. who come and go.

  740. Do the signs

  741. point to the coming?

  742. I believe they do,

  743. but I want to tell you

  744. something.

  745. I don't know

  746. when that's going to be.

  747. And if you ever

  748. meet a preacher,

  749. somebody who says,

  750. man,

  751. I've studied prophecy

  752. all my life

  753. and this is my gig

  754. and this is what I know,

  755. and he says to you,

  756. everything here says,

  757. Jesus is coming

  758. and it's going to be

  759. absolute.

  760. It'll be in the next year.

  761. It'll be in the next

  762. two years.

  763. You know you've met

  764. somebody

  765. who has outpunted

  766. their coverage.

  767. You know you've met

  768. somebody who thinks

  769. they know more

  770. than they know.

  771. And I want to show you

  772. why.

  773. You don't have to take

  774. that on my authority.

  775. Look, if you will,

  776. at chapter 5

  777. and verse 1

  778. about the times

  779. and the seasons,

  780. brothers.

  781. You do not need

  782. anything to be

  783. written to you.

  784. For you yourselves

  785. know very well

  786. that the day of the Lord

  787. will come just like

  788. a thief in the night.

  789. You ever been robbed?

  790. They send you

  791. advance notice.

  792. You're going to be robbed?

  793. No.

  794. And when they say

  795. peace and security,

  796. then suddenly a destruction

  797. comes on them

  798. like labor pains

  799. on a pregnant woman

  800. and they will not

  801. escape.

  802. But you,

  803. brothers,

  804. are not in the dark.

  805. That's what Paul

  806. would say to everybody

  807. here at First Baptist

  808. Pickens

  809. who's struggling

  810. to know

  811. when's he coming.

  812. He says,

  813. But you, brothers,

  814. are not in the dark

  815. so that this day

  816. would overtake you

  817. like a thief.

  818. For you are all

  819. sons of the light

  820. and sons of the day.

  821. We're not of the night

  822. or of the darkness.

  823. So then,

  824. we must not sleep

  825. like the rest,

  826. but we must stay awake

  827. and be sober.

  828. You know what he's saying?

  829. This wasn't a word

  830. that he would have used.

  831. It wasn't a word

  832. in his vernacular.

  833. But if he were living

  834. today in our culture,

  835. you know what I think

  836. he'd say to folk

  837. like that

  838. who are just constantly

  839. saying,

  840. Is it going to be

  841. January the 5th?

  842. Is it going to be

  843. next April?

  844. Will it be in 2025?

  845. You know what he'd say?

  846. Chill.

  847. Just chill.

  848. Just live

  849. for the Lord

  850. Jesus Christ.

  851. I mean,

  852. just chill out

  853. and look for the Lord

  854. to come

  855. and be prepared

  856. for the Lord

  857. to come

  858. and live as though

  859. he's going to come

  860. tomorrow,

  861. but stop worrying

  862. about it

  863. and stop listening

  864. to folk

  865. who tell you

  866. that they can predict

  867. whenever that's going

  868. to be.

  869. So what has Paul

  870. said to us?

  871. What has James

  872. we saw last week

  873. said to us?

  874. These three things.

  875. First of all,

  876. be a church

  877. that's known

  878. for how it loves.

  879. I want to tell you

  880. about every church

  881. I've ever heard

  882. or talked to

  883. or met.

  884. That's what they all

  885. say about themselves.

  886. But you know

  887. a lot of places

  888. that isn't so,

  889. is it?

  890. I want to tell you

  891. more than anything else,

  892. you want the badge

  893. of your discipleship

  894. to be we love

  895. people of every stripe,

  896. those who love

  897. the church

  898. and those who don't,

  899. those in the church

  900. and those out of the church.

  901. Secondly,

  902. we want to walk

  903. the talk.

  904. We want to say

  905. to people out there

  906. in the world,

  907. here's how you should live

  908. and then we live

  909. differently.

  910. We want them

  911. to look at us

  912. and not think

  913. we're oddballs

  914. and nutcases,

  915. peculiar in that sense.

  916. But we want them

  917. to look at us

  918. and say,

  919. you know what?

  920. There's something

  921. just different

  922. about those folks.

  923. They have a level

  924. of character

  925. and a level

  926. of integrity

  927. and honesty

  928. and they just live

  929. by this code

  930. that we don't quite get.

  931. It's not in keeping

  932. with the world.

  933. They talk about

  934. this guy Jesus

  935. and they seem

  936. to have this kingdom

  937. kind of mentality.

  938. They're more worried

  939. about the eternal

  940. than the temporal.

  941. They're more worried

  942. about the spiritual

  943. than they are

  944. the physical.

  945. They're not materialistic.

  946. They're holy

  947. and they're pure

  948. but they don't brag

  949. about it.

  950. They have this

  951. hidden holiness

  952. and righteousness

  953. of which when the world

  954. sees it,

  955. can I tell you something?

  956. They'll be envious of it

  957. because they'll say,

  958. that guy may be

  959. a little naive,

  960. she may be a little naive

  961. but I'm going to tell you something.

  962. That's a good person.

  963. That's a person

  964. who walks with God.

  965. And finally,

  966. be a church,

  967. be a church

  968. that is looking

  969. for the coming

  970. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  971. Not because your eyes

  972. are fastened on the clouds

  973. and you got your calendar

  974. out and you're marking a day

  975. but because you believe

  976. what he's promised

  977. and therefore you're free

  978. to live your life

  979. with hope

  980. and without fear

  981. because you know

  982. one of these days

  983. he's coming again.

  984. Now,

  985. before this series ends,

  986. can I throw in

  987. a personal note?

  988. Give you a little advice

  989. from somebody

  990. who's passed a long time.

  991. You take it

  992. for what it's worth.

  993. But I want to share

  994. with you three things

  995. as you think about

  996. what kind of church

  997. do we want to be?

  998. Three pieces

  999. of personal advice

  1000. I'd give you

1001. as you try to live out

  1002. these three things.

  1003. Here's the first.

  1004. Be driven always

  1005. by a sense

  1006. of purpose.

  1007. Know

  1008. exactly

  1009. who you are

1010. and what your mission is

  1011. and what your reason

  1012. for existence is.

1013. Can I ask you this morning,

1014. do you know that already

  1015. individually

  1016. and collectively

  1017. as the people

1018. of the First Baptist Church

  1019. are pickings?

1020. Because I've got to be honest

  1021. with you,

  1022. I go a lot of places

  1023. and preach

1024. when I was doing revivals

  1025. years and years

  1026. and years ago

  1027. and I found people

  1028. who they were faithful

  1029. to their church,

  1030. they were actively

  1031. involved in their church

  1032. but I think I could

1033. look at many of them

  1034. and say,

  1035. do you know why

  1036. your church exists?

  1037. And they go,

  1038. well we do this

  1039. and we do that

1040. and we do the other.

  1041. We're involved in this

  1042. and that

1043. and we have this program

  1044. and that program.

  1045. Yeah, but you see

  1046. all those are tools.

  1047. They're tools

  1048. that you use

  1049. to accomplish

  1050. your objectives

  1051. but you understand

  1052. what your objective is

  1053. and I believe

  1054. many of them

  1055. their eyes

  1056. would have glazed over.

  1057. Do you know

  1058. what the purpose

1059. of the First Baptist Church

  1060. of Pickens is?

  1061. When I had pastored

  1062. Rushy Creek

  1063. about 15 years,

  1064. the deacons came

  1065. and said,

1066. we want to give you

  1067. two months off

  1068. and we want you

  1069. to just go away

  1070. and pray and think.

  1071. Just rest

  1072. and get refreshed

  1073. and come back.

  1074. My wife and I

1075. went away for two months

  1076. and I thought a whole lot

1077. about what is the purpose

  1078. of the church

  1079. because we were growing

  1080. and seeing people

1081. come to know the Lord

1082. but I just felt like

  1083. our purpose

  1084. was nebulous.

  1085. The written statement

  1086. in our church constitution,

  1087. it was pretty,

  1088. it talked about

  1089. kingdom things

  1090. and about worship

  1091. and it just had

1092. a whole lot of stuff.

  1093. It was about

1094. four or five sentences long.

  1095. Nobody, nobody

  1096. could have quoted

  1097. it to anybody.

1098. So when I came back

  1099. I said,

  1100. you know what we're

  1101. going to do?

  1102. We're going to

  1103. scratch all that

  1104. and we're going to

  1105. bring it down

  1106. to three words

  1107. that everybody

  1108. can get.

  1109. So that everybody

  1110. who was a member

  1111. at Rushy Creek,

  1112. this was required,

  1113. you had to know

  1114. those three words.

  1115. Pretty easy

  1116. when you just got

  1117. three words, right?

  1118. Here are the three

  1119. words we chose.

  1120. Rescue, grow, and serve.

  1121. We're about rescuing

  1122. which is evangelism,

  1123. reaching out after people.

1124. I love that word rescue.

  1125. It's used a number

  1126. of times by Paul

  1127. in his letters.

  1128. We're rescuing people

  1129. out of sin

  1130. and out of destruction

  1131. and bringing them

  1132. to life in Christ.

  1133. Secondly, we're growing

  1134. the idea of discipleship.

  1135. We don't see people

  1136. become believers

1137. and then just stay there

  1138. as they do

  1139. in so many churches.

  1140. We don't see them

  1141. grow up strong.

1142. We devoted a single night.

  1143. Wednesday night

  1144. was for nothing

  1145. but discipleship.

1146. That's all you could do.

  1147. Wednesday night

  1148. is our discipleship night.

  1149. And then the last

  1150. was service.

1151. We want to be in missions.

1152. We want to be in ministry

1153. and we want to love people

  1154. and serve people

  1155. and we believe

1156. that will open the door

1157. for us to share the gospel

1158. and do that first thing

  1159. of rescue.

1160. So we said that's our mission

1161. and if it doesn't pertain

1162. to rescue, grow, and serve

1163. we're not going to do it.

1164. That leads to the second thing

1165. I'm going to tell you

1166. but I'm going to hold off

1167. from that for just a moment.

  1168. Do you know what

  1169. your mission statement,

  1170. your printed mission statement

1171. is here at First Baptist Picks?

  1172. I hope you do.

  1173. What is it?

  1174. Do you know?

  1175. There's a single word.

  1176. What is it?

  1177. Somebody say it.

  1178. There you go.

  1179. Good for you.

1180. You want to be a well church.

1181. You want to be well individuals.

  1182. You want to worship.

  1183. You want to evangelize.

  1184. You want to learn

  1185. which is discipleship

1186. and you want to love

1187. which is the idea of service.

  1188. It doesn't matter

  1189. how you state it,

  1190. what your words are.

  1191. What matters is

  1192. you understand your purpose

  1193. and you understand

  1194. that's why we're here

  1195. at First Baptist Church

  1196. Pickens.

  1197. That's what we're about.

1198. I want to commend you

  1199. on your purpose statement.

1200. I want to ask you

  1201. are you moving

  1202. in that direction?

  1203. Is that really

  1204. and truly your purpose

1205. or is that just propaganda?

1206. Is that your real purpose

1207. or is that just something

1208. you say is your purpose

  1209. but your purpose

  1210. is something secondary?

1211. Only you can answer that.

  1212. Second piece of advice

1213. I'd give you is this.

  1214. Stay laser focused

1215. as a church on that purpose.

1216. I mean set that as your target

1217. and don't let anything else

  1218. interfere with it

1219. because I want to tell you something.

  1220. I know from being a pastor

1221. for many, many, many years

1222. your church is going to be asked

1223. the pastor is going to be asked

  1224. to be involved

1225. in lots and lots and lots

1226. and lots of good stuff.

1227. But you need to constantly

  1228. be asking yourself

  1229. is this good thing

  1230. we're being asked

  1231. to participate in

1232. help us accomplish our mission

1233. or is it take us

1234. off focus of our mission?

1235. Because you know what I found

1236. happening in the 90s especially?

  1237. A lot of churches

  1238. especially larger churches

  1239. they became Walmarts.

  1240. They became Walmarts where

1241. you know what I mean by Walmart?

1242. They sell a little bit

  1243. of everything, right?

1244. And so churches would say

  1245. man we've got a hundred ministries

1246. and we're involved in this

1247. and we're involved in this

1248. and we're involved in this

1249. and we're involved in this

1250. and this and this and this

  1251. and those ministries

  1252. became ends in themselves

  1253. instead of a means

  1254. to reaching an end

  1255. because they forgot

  1256. what their mission was.

1257. And I want to just tell you today

1258. I don't mean to sound an alarm

  1259. but church is different

1260. in 2021 than it was

  1261. in 1960.

  1262. If we're honest

  1263. back in 1960

  1264. many of us

  1265. looked to the church

  1266. for not only

  1267. spiritual well-being

  1268. and help

  1269. and guidance

  1270. but for social

  1271. avenues as well.

  1272. But in 2021

  1273. folks aren't doing

  1274. that any longer.

  1275. They're looking

  1276. to the church

  1277. and still need

  1278. the church

  1279. for spiritual advice

  1280. and help

  1281. and guidance

  1282. and to work together

  1283. to accomplish a mission.

1284. But I'm telling you something

  1285. they're doing things

  1286. socially

1287. in a lot of different ways

  1288. and the church

  1289. doesn't have to invent

  1290. every wheel.

  1291. Do you understand that?

  1292. There are good things

  1293. that can happen

  1294. and the church

  1295. not be the leader

  1296. in that.

  1297. In fact

  1298. I think it's a healthier

  1299. approach to say this

  1300. this is our mission

  1301. and this is where

  1302. we're going.

1303. We see some good things

  1304. out there.

1305. What we're going to do

  1306. is instead of

  1307. reinventing that wheel

  1308. we're going to ask

  1309. our ministers

  1310. and our members

  1311. to go be partners

  1312. with people

  1313. in the world

  1314. doing those good things

  1315. and influence people

  1316. who are lost

  1317. who are involved

1318. in doing those good things

  1319. instead of saying

  1320. always you come

  1321. to the church

  1322. or we'll do it

1323. here at the church house.

  1324. You understand

  1325. what I'm saying

  1326. in that?

  1327. For instance

1328. and I can say this

  1329. instantly

  1330. because I don't know

  1331. what you got.

  1332. Okay?

  1333. I know I'm up in

  1334. somebody here

  1335. and I'm not meaning

  1336. to and I don't know

  1337. anything about your church

  1338. and ask anything

  1339. about this

  1340. but most churches

  1341. have softball teams

  1342. right?

1343. And I'm not telling you

  1344. to go disband

  1345. your softball team

1346. don't hear me say that

1347. but what would be wrong

  1348. instead of having

1349. nine guys on the field

  1350. who know Jesus

1351. and one guy you invited

  1352. who doesn't know Jesus

  1353. to come in

1354. to play ball with you

  1355. for a couple guys

  1356. from the church

  1357. to go play ball

  1358. with eight or ten

  1359. other lost guys

  1360. and to influence

  1361. those lost guys

  1362. rather than say

  1363. come here and

  1364. play with us.

  1365. You understand

  1366. what I'm saying?

  1367. That's yes.

  1368. Infiltrate the world.

  1369. Take the gospel

  1370. to the world

  1371. where people live

  1372. and be a part

  1373. of their world

  1374. instead of always

  1375. saying come

  1376. and be a part

  1377. of ours.

  1378. So I would say

  1379. to you

  1380. know what you're

  1381. about

  1382. and stay

  1383. low

  1384. laser focused

  1385. on doing

  1386. that which you're

  1387. about

  1388. and not just

  1389. doing good stuff

  1390. and here's the

  1391. third reason

  1392. the final piece

  1393. of advice

  1394. I'm going to give

  1395. you and I close

  1396. because you need

  1397. to always remember

  1398. the clock

  1399. is running.

  1400. Use your time

  1401. wisely.

  1402. Paul told the

  1403. Ephesians

  1404. to redeem the time.

  1405. Remember that phrase

1406. in the book of Ephesians?

  1407. Redeem the time

  1408. because the days

  1409. are evil.

  1410. There was a

  1411. version of the

  1412. scripture called

  1413. the cotton patch version

  1414. years and years

  1415. and years ago

  1416. and it was written

  1417. from a southern

  1418. perspective

  1419. and you know

  1420. what the cotton patch

  1421. version said

  1422. about that verse

  1423. it said this

  1424. and I loved it

  1425. it said

  1426. use your time

  1427. as though you

  1428. had to buy it.

  1429. That's a pretty

  1430. good idea

  1431. isn't it?

  1432. In other words

  1433. don't waste your

  1434. time.

  1435. Use your time

  1436. as though you

  1437. had to buy it

  1438. because the

  1439. clock is running

  1440. out.

  1441. I'm going to

  1442. speak to everybody

  1443. in this room

  1444. right now

  1445. at least my age

  1446. and older.

  1447. You're well

  1448. aware of that

  1449. because there's

  1450. hardly a day

  1451. passes in my

  1452. life that I

  1453. don't at some

  1454. point in the

  1455. time they

  1456. think the

  1457. clock's running

  1458. for me and

  1459. it's running

  1460. out.

  1461. I didn't think

  1462. that when I

  1463. was 30.

  1464. I didn't think

  1465. that when I

  1466. was 40.

  1467. It didn't

  1468. cross my mind

  1469. even when I

  1470. was 50.

  1471. But as my

  1472. 70th birthday

  1473. is approaching

  1474. I know this

  1475. the clock's

  1476. running and

  1477. time's running

  1478. out.

  1479. And it's

  1480. not just

  1481. running out

  1482. for us as

  1483. individuals.

  1484. I want to

  1485. tell you

  1486. something.

  1487. It's running

  1488. out for all

  1489. of us

  1490. collectively as

  1491. a church.

  1492. We're on

  1493. mission.

  1494. The Lord

  1495. Jesus Christ

  1496. is going to

  1497. come again

  1498. and when

  1499. he comes

  1500. again the

  1501. clock will

  1502. have expired.

  1503. Our

  1504. opportunity to

  1505. bring the

  1506. loss to

  1507. faith in

  1508. Christ will

  1509. be over.

  1510. So I

  1511. tell you

  1512. this.

  1513. I close

  1514. with this.

  1515. Know your

  1516. mission.

  1517. Decide as

  1518. a church

  1519. here's what

  1520. we want to

  1521. be about.

  1522. Here's what

  1523. God has

  1524. called us

  1525. to do.

  1526. Get a

  1527. laser focus

  1528. on that

  1529. and don't

  1530. let anybody

  1531. or anything

  1532. get you

  1533. off that

  1534. mission.

  1535. Say no

  1536. to good

  1537. stuff and

  1538. just do

  1539. the best

  1540. stuff.

  1541. Don't try

  1542. to do it

  1543. all but

  1544. I'm going

  1545. to do

  1546. the best

  1547. stuff.

  1548. Not just

  1549. the good

  1550. stuff,

  1551. the best

  1552. stuff.

  1553. Which means

  1554. I'm going

  1555. to say

  1556. no to

  1557. some

  1558. things that

  1559. will upset

  1560. some folk

  1561. because they'll

  1562. say well this

  1563. is a good

  1564. thing and you

  1565. ought to be

  1566. doing the

  1567. good thing

  1568. but it's

  1569. not my

  1570. purpose.

  1571. Individually

  1572. and collectively

  1573. in life it's

  1574. not my

  1575. purpose.

  1576. I close

  1577. with this

  1578. illustration,

  1579. true illustration

  1580. about a

  1581. year before I

  1582. retired,

  1583. maybe two,

  1584. I think it

  1585. was just a

  1586. year before I

  1587. retired.

  1588. I was

  1589. beginning to

  1590. be more and

  1591. more and

  1592. more reflective

  1593. and more and

  1594. more of the

  1595. mindset we've

  1596. got to stay

  1597. focused because

  1598. there were

  1599. just so many

  1600. demands to

  1601. do so many

  1602. different things.

  1603. There was a

  1604. guy I had

  1605. discipled when I

  1606. first came to

  1607. the church,

  1608. he was newly

  1609. wed,

  1610. he had

  1611. surrendered to

  1612. ministry,

  1613. he'd gone off

  1614. to seminary,

  1615. he'd started

  1616. a church out

  1617. in Tennessee,

  1618. it was

  1619. booming,

  1620. it was

  1621. rocking.

  1622. I called

  1623. him and I

  1624. said,

  1625. Todd would

  1626. you fly here

  1627. to Greenville,

  1628. we'd like to

  1629. buy some of

  1630. your time,

  1631. I want you to

  1632. talk to our

  1633. staff about what

  1634. you've done

  1635. there at that

  1636. church.

  1637. He came and

  1638. he shared with

  1639. our staff,

  1640. we met in this

  1641. conference room,

  1642. and he shared

  1643. with our

  1644. staff,

  1645. here's something

  1646. you can do to

  1647. impact your

  1648. community.

  1649. It was a big

  1650. Easter egg deal,

  1651. right?

  1652. I won't go into

  1653. great detail

  1654. because it's

  1655. insignificant to

  1656. you and your

  1657. purposes,

  1658. but we planned

  1659. this big event.

  1660. I had about

  1661. eight staff

  1662. members that

  1663. said,

  1664. you're going to

  1665. be in charge

  1666. of it and

  1667. everybody here

  1668. is going to

  1669. help,

  1670. everybody here

  1671. is going to

  1672. have responsibility

  1673. because a lot

  1674. of times you

  1675. can have a

  1676. good plan but

  1677. you don't

  1678. execute your

  1679. plan.

  1680. Sometimes you

  1681. execute your

  1682. plan but your

  1683. plan was a

  1684. bad plan.

  1685. You don't know

  1686. unless you

  1687. evaluate so I

  1688. was always

  1689. big on

  1690. evaluation.

  1691. So here's

  1692. what we do.

  1693. You're going to

  1694. be in charge

  1695. of this.

  1696. We're going to

  1697. work this up

  1698. over about two

  1699. months and then

  1700. we're going to

  1701. do this on

  1702. Saturday right

  1703. before Easter.

  1704. Okay?

  1705. Everybody

  1706. fulfill their

  1707. responsibility to

  1708. the nth degree.

  1709. 2,000 people who

  1710. weren't members of

  1711. Brushy Creek came

  1712. to that event.

  1713. First year we

  1714. had it.

  1715. The next year we

  1716. did it.

  1717. 2,000 people

  1718. came to that

  1719. event.

  1720. The second

  1721. year evaluation

  1722. was different than

  1723. the first year

  1724. because the first

  1725. year we've just

  1726. had it.

  1727. But the second

  1728. year we've had

  1729. it now we've

  1730. had it a second

  1731. time and we've

  1732. had a chance to

  1733. see how did this

  1734. impact our church.

  1735. Right?

  1736. I remember we're in

  1737. this conference room

  1738. and they're all

  1739. sitting here around

  1740. this conference

  1741. table.

  1742. I get up from

  1743. the conference

  1744. table and for

  1745. some reason I

  1746. just went over

  1747. and I'm looking

  1748. out this window

  1749. and I'm looking

  1750. at the streets

  1751. there running by

  1752. the church and

  1753. I'm listening to

  1754. all the conversation

  1755. and they're telling

  1756. me about how

  1757. many people

  1758. came and what

  1759. it cost and

  1760. the whole nine

  1761. yards.

  1762. So I turned to

  1763. them and I

  1764. said I looked

  1765. at the one I'd

  1766. made in charge

  1767. and I said I

  1768. want you to

  1769. know you executed

  1770. the plan perfectly.

  1771. You did a great

  1772. great great job.

  1773. And every one of

  1774. you who participated

  1775. in this everybody

  1776. you showed up you

  1777. did a good good

  1778. job and I'm

  1779. going to give

  1780. you an A plus

  1781. an effort and it

  1782. couldn't be any

  1783. better.

  1784. Last time we're

  1785. ever going to do

  1786. it.

  1787. And you could

  1788. hear the air

  1789. suck out of the

  1790. room.

  1791. What do you

  1792. mean the last

  1793. time we were here?

  1794. We had 2,000

  1795. people there.

  1796. You see our

  1797. goal is not to

  1798. see how many

  1799. people we can

  1800. bring to an

  1801. event.

  1802. It's to see how

  1803. that event impacts

  1804. our church and the

  1805. kingdom.

  1806. And it had

  1807. little if any

  1808. impact, lasting

  1809. impact.

  1810. And so we're not

  1811. going to do that

  1812. anymore.

1813. In the eyes of the

  1814. world they'd

  1815. probably call it

  1816. success.

  1817. success.

  1818. We're not doing

  1819. it anymore.

  1820. Because that's

  1821. taken us, our

  1822. energy, our

  1823. resources, away

  1824. from what our

  1825. purpose is.

  1826. And it makes us

  1827. feel good but it's

  1828. not accomplishing

  1829. our purpose so

  1830. we're not going to

  1831. do that anymore.

  1832. I'm going to tell

  1833. you as somebody

  1834. who's pastored for

  1835. a long time, the

  1836. hardest thing to

  1837. ever do in a

  1838. Baptist church is

  1839. not to start

  1840. something new.

  1841. That's probably

  1842. what you think.

  1843. To sell people

  1844. a new idea.

  1845. If you're a pretty

  1846. good salesman and

  1847. you've got a

  1848. pretty good plan,

  1849. you can always

  1850. sell people a

  1851. new idea.

  1852. You know what's

  1853. hard in a Baptist

  1854. church?

  1855. To kill something.

  1856. To bury it when

  1857. it's already dead.

  1858. We'll walk by a

  1859. stinking, decaying

  1860. body of ministry

  1861. all the time.

  1862. And you'll go,

  1863. whew, that stinks.

  1864. Let's just do it

  1865. again next week.

  1866. Maybe it'll be

  1867. better next week.

  1868. Isn't that so?

  1869. Huh?

  1870. Got any corpses

  1871. around here at

  1872. Pickens?

1873. If you want to be

  1874. a church that's

  1875. doing what God

  1876. wants you to do,

  1877. you've got to

  1878. first of all, get

  1879. in the Word and

  1880. find out what

  1881. He wants us to

  1882. do.

  1883. And boy, once we

  1884. lock in on that,

  1885. we're not going to

  1886. do other stuff.

  1887. We're going to

  1888. leave that for

  1889. somebody else to

  1890. do.

  1891. We'll go join

  1892. them in doing

  1893. good stuff.

  1894. Our members,

  1895. we're not going

  1896. to be afraid.

  1897. They don't,

  1898. everything you do

  1899. for the kingdom

  1900. doesn't have to be

  1901. through First

  1902. Baptist Pickens.

  1903. Do you

  1904. understand that?

  1905. You can go join

  1906. some other things.

  1907. I'm not talking

  1908. about churches.

  1909. I'm talking about

  1910. joining other

  1911. ministries.

  1912. Go sing in the

  1913. local chorus.

  1914. Go play ball on

  1915. the softball teams

  1916. and baseball teams

  1917. here in Pickens.

  1918. Be involved in

  1919. the PTA.

  1920. Do a lot of

  1921. stuff and let

  1922. your influence

  1923. for Christ be

  1924. known in those

  1925. places.

  1926. Let the church

  1927. stay on focus

  1928. with what the

  1929. mission of the

  1930. church is.

  1931. bringing men to

  1932. Christ.

  1933. Bringing God

  1934. glory.

  1935. Let's bow in

  1936. prayer.

  1937. Father,

  1938. you know it's

  1939. not my heart

  1940. or my desire

  1941. to just rock

  1942. the boat or

  1943. to offend

  1944. anyone.

  1945. But God,

  1946. I pray you'd

  1947. help our

  1948. churches across

  1949. the land

  1950. to realize

  1951. you've saved

  1952. us for a

  1953. purpose and

  1954. you brought us

  1955. together for a

  1956. purpose.

  1957. purpose.

  1958. And if we

  1959. can stay

  1960. focused,

  1961. we can

  1962. accomplish that

  1963. purpose.

  1964. And I pray

  1965. that we never

  1966. settle for

  1967. something that's

  1968. easy and

  1969. something that's

  1970. shiny and

  1971. something that

  1972. maybe will make

  1973. folk applaud us.

  1974. But Lord,

  1975. we would do that

  1976. which you've

  1977. called us to do,

  1978. which really is

  1979. important to love

  1980. people,

  1981. to live holy,

  1982. to look for your

  1983. coming,

  1984. to bring you

  1985. glory.

  1986. have your

  1987. will and

  1988. way in this

  1989. service as I

  1990. pray in your

  1991. name.

  1992. For your

  1993. sake we pray.

  1994. Amen.

  1995. Amen.
