  1. If you have your Bibles, look with me this morning to Psalm 51.

  2. Psalm 51, and we're going to read the first 13 verses here in just a few moments.

  3. Psalm chapter 51, verses 1 to 13.

    Psalms 51:1–13

  4. I want to begin just a real short sermon series this morning.

  5. It's only this week and next week.

  6. I want to preach two messages, though, that go together,

  7. and I'm calling this a fresh start.

  8. I don't know about you, but I look forward to the beginning of a new year each and every year.

  9. The only thing I don't like is writing checks and then continue to put the last year, right?

  10. But I like a new year because it gives us a fresh start.

  11. And let me just tell you two things about myself that probably you don't know.

  12. One, I'm a little bit of perfectionist.

  13. Now, I'm not a full-blown perfectionist.

  14. A lot of things, you know, just don't really matter.

  15. But certain things, I am.

  16. And in the area of neatness, I'm a little bit of a neat freak.

  17. You know, I just like things to be orderly, and I like them to be neat.

  18. And that's just part of my personality.

  19. But there's a contradiction to that.

  20. I'm a doodler.

  21. How many of y'all are doodlers?

  22. You know what I mean?

  23. And one of the things I like about a new year is when I was working full-time,

  24. my secretary every year would buy me a calendar,

  25. and she'd bring it into my office on January 1 and say,

  26. Here it is, Pastor.

  27. You have a brand-new calendar.

  28. And she knew I looked forward to it because a brand-new calendar is just fresh, right?

  29. There's no scribbling on it.

  30. There's no marks on it.

  31. And you get to plan out the whole year in advance.

  32. And it's just always cool.

  33. And with me, because I'm a neat freak, that part of my personality,

  34. I would always begin, like on January 1, if I had an appointment,

  35. I'd put those down, and I'd just write so neat, you know,

  36. either in cursive or in print.

  37. It would just be so neat.

  38. And I'd do that for the next few days, the next week.

  39. But then in about four or five days, I'd be on the phone talking to somebody,

  40. and if that conversation goes more than about two or three minutes,

  41. then I'd just start doodling.

  42. And that was always there by my phone.

  43. And so I'd start drawing birds, or I'd draw fish, or, you know,

  44. I'd draw trees, or I'd draw mountains,

  45. or I'd just make triangles and circles and figuring,

  46. just all kinds of crazy stuff.

  47. And so after about two weeks, my calendar just looks a mess.

  48. And I just sometimes attempt just to tear out January and go to February, you know,

  49. get another fresh start, right?

  50. Any of you like that, you know what I found through the years?

  51. Our lives are a lot like my calendar.

  52. By the time you get to December 31, boy, our calendars are a mess, aren't they?

  53. Because you've written phone numbers here and there,

  54. and little notes that you go back now, you don't know what your note meant,

  55. all those kind of things.

  56. And my life gets that way a lot of times.

  57. It gets kind of muddled, and the lines get confused,

  58. and it's not neat anymore.

  59. Life is messy, right?

  60. And I don't know about you, but I found a whole lot of times I need a fresh start,

  61. not just with a new calendar.

  62. I need a fresh start with a lot of things.

  63. Sometimes people need a fresh start with a new job, right?

  64. The old one's not working out, and I just need to go find a new job.

  65. And sometimes you're involved in some relationships that just aren't working out,

  66. and you say, you know what, I just need a fresh start here.

  67. Or you're in one, and you're not going to walk away from that relationship.

  68. But you know there are some corrections that need to be made,

  69. because we need to make this thing better than what it's been in the past.

  70. We need to get a fresh new start.

  71. I'll tell you something else.

  72. A lot of folks I've found, and this includes me at times in my life,

  73. we come to a place in our relationship with God where we need a fresh new start.

  74. If you'd be honest about it this morning, not all of you, but some of you in this room,

  75. you look at your relationship with God as it is today, and you just know this,

  76. it's just not what it should be.

  77. It's not what you want it to be.

  78. There was a closeness you enjoyed once with God,

  79. and a fellowship you enjoyed once with Him,

  80. and a sense of joy and peace and power that just filled your life.

  81. And somehow that's gone.

  82. You pray now, and it feels as though God's a thousand miles away.

  83. You wonder, does He even hear me?

  84. And those things that once brought you joy,

  85. you just were elated because of your relationship with God.

  86. Now, it's just not like that.

  87. And you hear people talk about having a sweet, intimate, personal relationship with God,

  88. and you get a little bit envious.

  89. I wish mine were like that, but it's just not.

  90. I just kind of find myself going through the motions.

  91. And so the million-dollar question is this,

  92. what causes us to find ourselves at that place in our lives spiritually?

  93. Can I just tell you this?

  94. Most people I know, it's not that one day they get up and they say,

  95. you know what, I'm not going to believe in God anymore.

  96. It's not that anyone ever just stands up in Sunday school class,

  97. I've never heard of this happening, may have happened somewhere,

  98. but not in the churches I pastored,

  99. where somebody stands up and says, you know what,

  100. I just don't hold to the same things I used to hold to.

  101. I'm becoming a liberal as of this particular day in my life.

  102. Most times people don't consciously walk away.

  103. What happens is they just find themselves getting more and more and more distant from God.

  104. And there are a variety of reasons why that can happen.

  105. But I want to tell you one big one I found as a pastor is this,

  106. and this may surprise you,

  107. it is because of the presence of unconfessed sin in our life.

  108. Because I'm going to promise you something,

  109. if we're to have a meaningful, intimate relationship with God,

  110. and fellowship between us and God is to be sweet and pure in what it should be at its height,

  111. it requires above everything else transparency on our part,

  112. because God absolutely hates hypocrisy.

  113. And God will not deal with us when we're living in a fashion of hypocrisy.

  114. So if we sin against God, and it doesn't have to be some big moral sin,

  115. if we sin against God and we fail to go to God and say,

  116. God, I need to confess this to you and get this right with you,

  117. and we harbor that in our heart,

  118. and it builds up and builds up and builds up,

  119. after a while, it's as though the relationship is strained,

  120. and we find ourselves distant from God.

  121. Now, I'm going to preach this message in two messages,

  122. because I can't get it all in in one.

  123. You'd want to leave before I got through this morning.

  124. But here's what we're going to do in this first message.

  125. We're going to look at a guy, a guy you know.

  126. I'm confident everybody in this room knows this guy.

  127. And you're going to see a guy who allowed that to happen in his life.

  128. He allowed unconfessed sin to break his relationship with God,

  129. to make him feel distant toward God.

  130. And when you know who it is, you'll be surprised,

  131. because you just think, oh, this guy's been so close to God.

  132. And then next week, we're going to come back,

  133. and we're going to talk about how do you fix that problem.

  134. Because I'll just tell you this much now.

  135. The way you fix the problem is you come clean with God,

  136. and you confess your sin to God.

  137. And I just got to be honest with you,

  138. that's something we Baptists just don't know much about.

  139. We kind of look at our Catholic friends,

  140. and we kind of, you know, just almost look down on them,

  141. because they go into this confessional booth,

  142. and they talk to a priest, and we say,

  143. you can't get rid of sin that way.

  144. But you know the Baptist idea?

  145. The Baptist idea is this.

  146. At the end of the service, when they sing the invitation,

  147. you go forward and take a pastor by the hand,

  148. and you say, Pastor, I've sinned,

  149. and I need to rededicate my life to God.

  150. And the pastor prays.

  151. Usually the person doesn't even pray.

  152. The pastor prays, and they go back to their seat,

  153. thinking, well, now I've got that out of the way.

  154. I'm ready for a fresh start with God.

  155. And you and I both know, because you've done that before,

  156. that only lasts about three minutes, right?

  157. I mean, you just know that doesn't really accomplish what you want it to.

  158. You go back to your seat, and you may feel better for a moment,

  159. but it's not long until, man, nothing's changed.

  160. So next week, if you'll come back,

  161. I'm going to preach a comprehensive message on confession,

  162. and I'm going to show you what confession really and truly involves,

  163. and I'm telling you, it's a painful process.

  164. But if you ever want to have peace and power with God again,

  165. confession is necessary.

  166. So let's jump in, and let's just find out

  167. what causes us to lose this relationship.

  168. And as I said, it's unconfessed sin.

  169. And the life I want us to look at is the life of a man by the name of King David.

  170. Everybody knows King David, right?

  171. You read about King David when you're a little bitty boy or girl in Sunday school.

  172. First story you come to is the story of David out tending his sheep,

  173. and he reveals this to Saul.

  174. There were times when he would have to rescue his sheep from the hands of bears and lions.

  175. And so, you know, man, this is an unusually gifted young man.

  176. He's powerful, even as a young man.

  177. We later know he becomes a great, great warrior in Israel.

  178. He goes out to fight Goliath.

  179. When all the adults in the Israeli army are fearful,

  180. little David, teenager David, musters the courage and says,

  181. I'll go in the name of the Lord and fight this great giant, this Goliath of Gath, right?

  182. So we fall instantly in love with David.

  183. And we find out he's multi-gifted.

  184. He's a great musician.

  185. In fact, he writes lots and lots and lots of the Psalms.

  186. He plays his heart for King Saul,

  187. and it soothes his nerves when he was troubled by evil spirits.

  188. He's a great friend to Jonathan.

  189. Remember those early chapters about David?

  190. He creates his friendship with Jonathan, the son of the king.

  191. He's a loyal, trusted friend.

  192. Even when Saul becomes jealous and turns against David,

  193. David will not lay a hand on Saul.

  194. He won't hurt a hair on his head.

  195. He's noble, so much so.

  196. You know what one biblical writer says about David?

  197. You know what I'm going to say, don't you?

  198. He was a man, say it with me, after God's own heart.

  199. Now, I want you to think about this for a minute.

  200. God is directing these men as they write the Scripture,

  201. and this man says, here's a man after God's own heart.

  202. I want to tell you something.

  203. I'd have to think long and hard if I'm writing something

  204. that's really important that's going to one day be Scripture.

  205. They didn't know that at the time.

  206. But if I'm under the inspiration of God,

  207. and I'm writing, here's a man who is after God's own heart,

  208. I'm going to be real careful about pinning that,

  209. because I'm going to tell you something.

  210. I don't want to be guilty of blasphemy.

  211. Who could say of anybody, here's somebody after God's own heart?

  212. So I'm going to tell you, David's stature in my eyes just rises

  213. as high as it can get with that.

  214. I mean, how do you top that?

  215. He's a man after God's own heart.

  216. When you see him worship, remember his wife, Michael,

  217. got angry with him because he's worshiping so transparently

  218. in the streets of Jerusalem when they bring the Ark of the Covenant back?

  219. I mean, here's a hero of heroes.

  220. But you know the rest of the story, don't you?

  221. One day his men are in battle, and David is out on his balcony.

  222. He's a good-looking guy, and he's out on his balcony,

  223. and he spots this woman down below,

  224. and he looks too long, and he lusts after her,

  225. and he sends a servant to get Bathsheba.

  226. She's a beautiful woman, and bring her to him.

  227. Now, have you ever thought about this?

  228. He's not just guilty in doing that of adultery.

  229. He's guilty of abuse of power.

  230. Right now, in our land, that's a big discussion, right?

  231. Where these powerful guys, they just think they can have their way with any woman,

  232. and they just put demands on them?

  233. You think she thought she had a choice in coming to the palace?

  234. It's the king who's beckoning her to come.

  235. It's clearly an abuse of power sexually.

  236. And then he sleeps with her, and she becomes pregnant with his baby,

  237. and now he really sees himself in a bind.

  238. David finds himself in a place he's never been before spiritually.

  239. So what can he do?

  240. Well, he can confess it.

  241. He can come clean with God and with man.

  242. But in his mind, I'm sure he thought,

  243. this will cost me my kingdom if I do that.

  244. So David decides, I'll just cover it up.

  245. And he sends for Uriah and has Uriah come home,

  246. and he thinks when Uriah gets home, he'll go in and be with his wife.

  247. But when he gets home, guess what?

  248. Even though David has been unfaithful to Uriah,

  249. Uriah is faithful to David, and he won't go home to his wife.

  250. And now, in David's mind, he's really in a pickle.

  251. I mean, what am I going to do?

  252. He won't go home.

  253. What's the matter with this crazy guy?

  254. Go home to your wife.

  255. He won't do it.

  256. Well, now he has no recourse unless he's going to come clean,

  257. except to have Uriah killed.

  258. And he pens a note and sends it by the hand of Uriah himself to Joab,

  259. the leader of his army,

  260. saying, I want you to send him out into the front and then fall back.

  261. Can I tell you something?

  262. I don't know if you've ever thought about it like this,

  263. but that's premeditated first-degree capital murder.

  264. David wouldn't have been any more guilty had they had guns in those days,

  265. had he called for Uriah, and as Uriah turned to walk off,

  266. he stuck the pistol in the back of his head and blew his head off.

  267. It was that premeditated.

  268. It was that intentional.

  269. It was that dastardly and cowardly.

  270. This noble, noble man who has fought for Israel,

  271. put his own life on the line,

  272. now takes the life of an innocent man.

  273. He's as guilty as guilty gets.

  274. And so, you read the life of David,

  275. and can I tell you something?

  276. There's nothing there to indicate,

  277. and David fell away from God.

  278. And David stopped worshiping God.

  279. And David stopped trying to write psalms.

  280. You know what happened?

  281. Next morning, it's business as usual.

  282. In fact, can I tell you something?

  283. He turns what looked like a possible tragedy

  284. into a victory for himself.

  285. I don't know if you ever thought about this.

  286. He marries Bathsheba, takes her home.

  287. You know what it looked like to the public?

  288. Think about it for a moment.

  289. Well, that good old King David,

  290. he's taken this fallen soldier's wife,

  291. and he's made her his wife.

  292. Wasn't that a noble thing for him to do?

  293. He's just done a treacherous thing.

  294. But now, he looks like a hero.

  295. And so, time passes,

  296. and he just gets on with his life.

  297. He goes right back to doing probably all the things.

  298. I'm just guessing.

  299. I don't know this.

  300. But there's nothing to indicate otherwise.

  301. Then he just goes right on singing,

  302. right on doing all the things

  303. he's always done in the past.

  304. But I'm going to tell you something.

  305. What it doesn't tell us,

  306. we know because of what Psalm 51 tells us.

  307. Things did change in David's heart and in his life.

  308. His relationship with God began to deteriorate.

  309. And David knew that and felt that.

  310. But he doesn't say anything about it.

  311. He just says the way many of us do in church,

  312. when that happens in our lives,

  313. and we just go right on pretending everything is hunky-dory.

  314. Until one day, this prophet of God, Nathan,

  315. God discloses to him what's happened.

  316. And Nathan goes to David.

  317. He says, King David, I need to talk to you.

  318. And he tells him this story

  319. about this rich guy who's got lots of lambs.

  320. I mean, they're just in abundance.

  321. But rather than kill one of his own

  322. to serve to one of his guests,

  323. he goes to this poor man down the road

  324. who only has one.

  325. It's not a part of a flock.

  326. It's his pet.

  327. And he kills that lamb and serves it to his guests.

  328. And boy, when David hears that

  329. because he's a man who's after God's own heart,

  330. he knows righteousness.

  331. When he hears it, he is outraged.

  332. And he thinks, how conniving and how sorry.

  333. And David says, tell me who that man is

  334. and I'm going to punish him.

  335. And you know the story, don't you?

  336. Nathan points his finger in David's face

  337. and says, David, it's you.

  338. You're the man.

  339. And David, I'm confident,

  340. he wept there in Nathan's presence.

  341. I want you to read the psalm he wrote

  342. as a result of that conversation with David.

  343. Go with me to Psalm 51.

  344. We're going to have to move real quickly.

  345. Look at Psalm 51.

  346. Be gracious to me, God.

  347. Do I need to do something?

  348. Okay.

  349. Mike's going to take care of it.

  350. Be gracious to me, God,

  351. according to your faithful love,

  352. according to your abundant compassion,

  353. blot out my rebellion,

  354. wash away my guilt,

  355. and cleanse me from my sin.

  356. Boy, aren't you thankful we have guys

  357. that know about that stuff.

  358. Yeah, give him an applause.

  359. Good guy.

  360. Thank you.

  361. Thank you so much, Michael.

  362. For I am conscious of my rebellion

  363. and my sin is always before me.

  364. Against you, you alone,

  365. I have sinned

  366. and done this evil in your sight.

  367. So you are right when you pass sentence.

  368. You are blameless when you judge.

  369. Indeed, I was guilty when I was born.

  370. I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

  371. Surely you desire integrity

  372. in the inner self

  373. and you teach me wisdom deep within.

  374. Listen to this.

  375. Purify me with hyssop

  376. and I will be clean.

  377. Wash me and I will be whiter than snow.

  378. Let me hear joy and gladness.

  379. Let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

  380. Turn your face away from my sins.

  381. Blot out all my guilt.

  382. God, create a clean heart for me

  383. and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

  384. Do not banish me from your presence

  385. or take your Holy Spirit from me.

  386. Restore the joy of your salvation to me

  387. and give me a willing spirit.

  388. Then I will teach rebellious,

  389. the rebellious your ways

  390. and sinners will return to you.

  391. Boy, what a beautiful, beautiful prayer.

  392. I want to show you four things

  393. that happened to David real quickly this morning

  394. in these remaining moments.

  395. Four things that happened to David

  396. because he harbored unconfessed sin in his heart.

  397. The first thing is this.

  398. David was eaten up with guilt and shame.

  399. David was absolutely eaten up with guilt and shame.

  400. I want to tell you something.

  401. When a believer sins against God,

  402. the Holy Spirit of God lives within us.

  403. He is going to bombard us with conviction

  404. which leads to us feeling guilt and shame.

  405. God doesn't desire that we feel guilt and shame.

  406. He desires to remind us through guilt and shame

  407. that we need to confess our sin to Him.

  408. But when we fail to do that,

  409. it takes a toll on our life.

  410. I want you to look at verse 1.

  411. Just a portion of the verse real quickly.

  412. Blot out my rebellion.

  413. That's what he says to God.

  414. He recognizes he's rebelled.

  415. He says, God, blot out my rebellion.

  416. Verse 2, wash away my guilt.

  417. Cleanse me from my sin.

  418. Verse 3, my sin is always before me.

  419. You know what he's saying in that?

  420. I can't get away from this thing, God.

  421. Everywhere I turn, I see me and Bathsheba.

  422. Everywhere I turn, I see Uriah.

  423. I see a fallen soldier.

  424. I see his corpse that they brought back for burial.

  425. God, my sin is ever before me.

  426. Now, don't you know,

  427. people can be or suffer from insomnia

  428. for a variety of reasons.

  429. It's not always guilt and shame.

  430. But I'll promise you this,

  431. when you're feeling guilty and shameful,

  432. you're going to have a hard time resting.

  433. You understand that?

  434. Boy, you're going to lay your head down on the pillow

  435. and you'll see that sin right there before you.

  436. You'll be in somebody's midst

  437. and they're talking about something

  438. and something will come up related to what you've done

  439. and you're going to relive that moment in your life.

  440. David was eat up with guilt and shame

  441. and he says,

  442. my sin is always before me.

  443. Verse 5,

  444. I was guilty when I was born.

  445. Can I ask you,

  446. are you eaten up with guilt?

  447. Through the years,

  448. I can't tell you how many people came into my office

  449. and they sat down and they said,

  450. oh, pastor, I'm just beside myself

  451. and I just need some counseling.

  452. I just need some help.

  453. Man, I'm down.

  454. I'm depressed.

  455. And they begin to tell me about their life

  456. and I say,

  457. well, what's been happening in your life?

  458. And they would tell me one thing or another

  459. and I'd say,

  460. was there any sin in your life?

  461. And they would then begin to tell me

  462. about something that had happened.

  463. And they would tell me about this sin

  464. and that sin and the other sin.

  465. They said,

  466. you see,

  467. I just think about these things all the time

  468. and I just feel so,

  469. so guilty.

  470. Can I tell you,

  471. a lot of times I'd listen to that for a few minutes

  472. and after I would,

  473. I'd say,

  474. can I tell you something?

  475. There's a difference in feeling guilty

  476. and being guilty.

  477. Sometimes we feel guilty

  478. when we're really and truly innocent.

  479. That's called shame.

  480. When I,

  481. as a pastor at times,

  482. needed to be three places,

  483. but there was only one of me

  484. and I could only be in one of those places,

  485. I felt bad that I couldn't be

  486. in all three of those places.

  487. But I'm going to tell you something,

  488. that's shame.

  489. That's not guilt.

  490. I'm doing the best that I can do.

  491. But I feel shame about that,

  492. but that shame feels very similar to guilt,

  493. doesn't it?

  494. But I want you to know something.

  495. When I do something that is wrong,

  496. I feel that same sense,

  497. but then it's not that I feel guilty,

  498. it's what?

  499. I am guilty.

  500. And I've said to a lot of folk

  501. when we would be in counseling sessions,

  502. is it that you feel guilty

  503. or is it that you are guilty?

  504. Have you established the fact that

  505. I did this or I did that

  506. or I neglected to do this or that?

  507. And as a result of that,

  508. it's not just a feeling I have.

  509. That feeling is a genuine feeling

  510. because it is true.

  511. I am in fact guilty.

  512. And David felt guilty

  513. because David was in fact guilty.

  514. Let me show you a second thing

  515. that harboring unconfessed sin will do.

  516. It will leave us feeling dirty.

  517. And David felt dirty.

  518. Look again quickly at the scripture

  519. if you have that Bible passage open.

  520. Verse 2,

  521. Wash away my guilt.

  522. Now seven times in just six verses,

  523. he's going to say something about being clean.

  524. Wash away my guilt.

  525. Clean me from my sin.

  526. Verse 7,

  527. Purify me with hyssop and I will be clean.

  528. Verse 7,

  529. Wash me and I will be whiter than snow.

  530. Verse 9,

  531. Blown out all my guilt.

  532. Verse 10,

  533. Create a clean heart in me,

  534. O God.

  535. Do you think it's just coincidental

  536. that again and again and again

  537. he prays this same phrase

  538. about being cleansed and being washed

  539. and having his guilt blotted out?

  540. I'm telling you,

  541. nothing could be further from the truth.

  542. The reason he prays that so often

  543. is because it's heavy on his mind

  544. because he feels dirty

  545. because of his sin.

  546. And you're going to see in the passage

  547. we look at next week in 1 John 1, 9

  548. that that's what sin and guilt does.

  549. It makes us feel dirty.

  550. It makes us feel as though we're impure

  551. and we're unclean.

  552. Years ago,

  553. Dr. Graham was preaching in London

  554. and he was speaking with a man

  555. who was the director of a large mental asylum.

  556. And Dr. Graham asked this man

  557. who was running the asylum,

  558. he said,

  559. tell me,

  560. why are most of the people in this asylum?

  561. And you know what the man told him?

  562. He said,

  563. 85% of the people here today

  564. could leave

  565. if they could come to accept

  566. God's forgiveness in their life

  567. because they're eaten up,

  568. they're ridden with guilt.

  569. They're ridden with guilt.

  570. Guilt will leave us feeling dirty.

  571. Remember the story of Pilate

  572. in the New Testament?

  573. Pilate has Jesus brought to him

  574. by the Sanhedrin.

  575. They make their charges.

  576. Pilate questions Jesus.

  577. You know the outcome of that, right?

  578. Pilate says,

  579. this man's not guilty of anything.

  580. He hears Herod's intent.

  581. He sends him quickly to Herod

  582. because he wants to get this monkey off his back.

  583. And when Herod questions him,

  584. guess what?

  585. Another guy didn't have any reason to love Jesus.

  586. But Herod questions Jesus

  587. and he realizes

  588. he's done nothing guilty

  589. deserving of murder

  590. or deserving of death.

  591. And he sends him back to Pilate.

  592. So Pilate questions him a second time,

  593. this time even more carefully.

  594. And when he gets through,

  595. here's the conclusion he reaches.

  596. This guy's not guilty of anything.

  597. He doesn't deserve to be put to death.

  598. And so he goes out to the crowd

  599. and he tries to appease the crowd

  600. by saying,

  601. hey,

  602. it's that time of year

  603. I released somebody.

  604. Who do you want me to release?

  605. Why don't I release Jesus?

  606. And the crowd says,

  607. no,

  608. don't release Jesus.

  609. Release Barabbas.

  610. Crucify Jesus.

  611. You remember what Pilate does?

  612. Interesting thing.

  613. He calls for a bowl of water to be brought

  614. and Pilate takes that water

  615. in front of those religious folk

  616. and he washes his hands

  617. and he's sending them a message.

  618. He says,

  619. symbolically,

  620. I'm washing my hands of this

  621. because I know

  622. and you know

  623. Jesus doesn't deserve

  624. to be put to death.

  625. And so I'm going to

  626. wash my hands of this.

  627. You know why?

  628. Because he felt dirty.

  629. Because he knew

  630. he had Jesus' blood

  631. on his hands.

  632. I want to tell you something.

  633. If you could look

  634. in the depths of hell today,

  635. I believe you'd still see Pilate

  636. wringing those hands

  637. and trying to wash his hands

  638. and rid himself

  639. of the blood

  640. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  641. I'm going to tell you today,

  642. sin will leave you feeling

  643. violated

  644. and leave you feeling dirty

  645. before God.

  646. There's a third thing.

  647. It left him feeling

  648. apart from God

  649. and abandoned.

  650. He had a deep sense of loss.

  651. He hadn't lost

  652. his relationship with God.

  653. But get this,

  654. he felt that way.

  655. He felt a deep sense of loss

  656. in his relationship with God.

  657. He hadn't lost his relationship

  658. with God.

  659. But that's how David felt.

  660. You know how I know that?

  661. Listen to verse 11.

  662. Do not banish me

  663. from your presence

  664. or take your Holy Spirit

  665. from me.

  666. Verse 12.

  667. Listen to this verse.

  668. Restore the joy

  669. of your salvation

  670. to me.

  671. Here's the sad thing.

  672. Here's a guy who knows God.

  673. He has a relationship

  674. with God.

  675. But the joy of that relationship,

  676. it's gone.

  677. He has a relationship,

  678. but he doesn't even know

  679. he has a relationship.

  680. He thinks what he's done

  681. is so horrendous

  682. that God has removed himself

  683. from David.

  684. But the truth is,

  685. David has removed himself

  686. from God.

  687. God still loves David

  688. as much as he ever loved David.

  689. But David's sin

  690. made him feel

  691. as though God

  692. were far, far away.

  693. Can I ask you right now,

  694. you don't have to raise your hand,

  695. you don't have to indicate

  696. to a neighbor,

  697. just right there

  698. in your seat

  699. as you think about this.

  700. Am I describing you?

  701. Do you feel as though

  702. you really have the joy

  703. of your salvation?

  704. Do you feel as though

  705. God is really close

  706. when I pray

  707. he listens to me?

  708. I can talk to him

  709. about anything

  710. because we're close,

  711. we're tight.

  712. Is that what you feel?

  713. Or do you feel

  714. maybe what David felt here

  715. in this song?

  716. You see,

  717. I'm convinced

  718. that there are lots

  719. and lots and lots

  720. of us in churches

  721. just like this

  722. from all over the country

  723. where we come Sunday

  724. after Sunday

  725. after Sunday

  726. and rather than admit

  727. we've got a problem,

  728. we'd rather just go

  729. through the motions

  730. and pretend that,

  731. boy, everything's okay

  732. in my relationship

  733. with God.

  734. And I want you to know

  735. you're robbing yourself

  736. of great, great joy,

  737. peace and power

  738. when you do that.

  739. There's one final thing

  740. and I close the message.

  741. It led to a lifeless worship

  742. and a lack of power

  743. in serving God.

  744. I want to show you that

  745. from the scripture.

  746. It says in verse 13,

  747. Then I will teach

  748. transgressors your ways

  749. and sinners will return to you.

  750. That's what he says

  751. in that 13th verse.

  752. You know why he says that?

  753. Because he feels as though

  754. I can't do that.

  755. right now.

  756. He says,

  757. If you will cleanse me

  758. and you will restore

  759. this relationship

  760. and I'll get this joy back,

  761. then I can teach

  762. transgressors sinners

  763. your ways.

  764. But right now,

  765. I can't do it.

  766. Interesting thing.

  767. I'm really anxious

  768. to find out one day

  769. when I get to heaven

  770. what the answer

  771. to this question is.

  772. Did God put David

  773. on a shelf

  774. and just refuse to use him?

  775. That's what we often

  776. think in church.

  777. Well, that guy's got

  778. in sin.

  779. God can't use him

  780. like that.

  781. God will put him

  782. on a shelf.

  783. Or did David

  784. put himself

  785. on the shelf?

  786. Because either way,

  787. he's on the shelf.

  788. You understand that?

  789. Whether God just says,

  790. I refuse to use you

  791. like this,

  792. or David says,

  793. he couldn't possibly

  794. use me like that.

  795. And he just

  796. withdrew himself.

  797. I had a deacon

  798. one time

  799. when I was a young pastor.

  800. I was just fresh

  801. out of seminary.

  802. Had a deacon

  803. about four or five

  804. years older than me.

  805. He came to me

  806. and said,

  807. Pastor,

  808. I want to resign

  809. as a deacon.

  810. And I called him

  811. by name and I said,

  812. man,

  813. why do you want

  814. to do that?

  815. Does anybody

  816. hurt your feelings?

  817. Have I done something?

  818. No, no,

  819. it's not about you.

  820. It's about me.

  821. I said,

  822. well,

  823. why do you want

  824. to resign?

  825. He says,

  826. well,

  827. I mismanaged my money.

  828. I was too selfish

  829. and greedy with my money

  830. and I started spending

  831. more on myself

  832. than I should

  833. and now I'm in debt

  834. and I can't tithe.

  835. And I just,

  836. I want to resign

  837. because I can't tithe.

  838. You see,

  839. he felt disqualified

  840. from service.

  841. You know what I said to him?

  842. I said,

  843. can I give you

  844. a better solution to that?

  845. He said,

  846. what's that?

  847. I said,

  848. why don't you just repent?

  849. Why don't you just tell God,

  850. God,

  851. I've been greedy

  852. and I've been selfish

  853. and I've misused my money

  854. and let us help you

  855. to get on a budget

  856. and you begin

  857. to tithe again.

  858. Why put yourself

  859. on the shelf?

  860. And I want to tell you something,

  861. I've seen a lot of believers

  862. who've done that.

  863. They stop teaching Sunday school,

  864. they fall out of this,

  865. they fall out of that.

  866. Sometimes though,

  867. here's the other thing

  868. that happens,

  869. they just keep doing

  870. what they've always done,

  871. they're just going

  872. through the motions.

  873. You see,

  874. if David did continue

  875. to lead worship,

  876. if he did continue

  877. to write psalms,

  878. can you imagine

  879. how empty

  880. that must have felt

  881. to David?

  882. Can you imagine

  883. how he must have stood

  884. when he told other people

  885. about faith in God?

  886. He's sitting there

  887. thinking to himself,

  888. boy,

  889. I don't even have

  890. this relationship

  891. with God

  892. that I'm telling them

  893. they need to have.

  894. Can you imagine

  895. what that was like?

  896. Sin in David's life,

  897. unconfessed,

  898. led to a lifeless worship

  899. and a lack of power

  900. in serving God.

  901. Well,

  902. what does David do?

  903. That's where we are now.

  904. What does David do?

  905. David

  906. prays this prayer

  907. we've read this morning

  908. in Psalm 51

  909. when he confesses

  910. his sin to God.

  911. And God

  912. restores him

  913. to a right relationship

  914. with himself.

  915. But it doesn't stop there.

  916. I want to show you

  917. something else.

  918. I want you to turn

  919. to one more psalm

  920. with me.

  921. Psalm 139.

  922. One of my favorite psalms

  923. in all the word of God.

  924. Psalm 139.

  925. I want you to find that

  926. and look at this with me

  927. if you will

  928. for just a moment.

  929. Psalm 139.

  930. And while you're

  931. turning there,

  932. after you've turned there,

  933. I want you to look up

  934. and listen

  935. for about two minutes

  936. and we're done.

  937. Ready?

  938. In fact,

  939. I'm going to come down here.

  940. In Psalm 139,

  941. many of you know that psalm,

  942. but a lot of you don't.

  943. You say,

  944. well,

  945. what's that about?

  946. 24 verses long.

  947. First 22 verses,

  948. David only talks

  949. about three things.

  950. It's a psalm

  951. that David wrote.

  952. One of the greatest psalms

  953. you'll ever read.

  954. He says three things

  955. and I can break it down

  956. for you real,

  957. real quick.

  958. He says,

  959. God,

  960. you are

  961. everywhere.

  962. Word we use

  963. in theology

  964. is omnipresent.

  965. God,

  966. you are

  967. everywhere.

  968. I can go down here.

  969. You're there.

  970. I go up there.

  971. You're there.

  972. I go over there.

  973. You're there.

  974. You lift up a rock.

  975. You're there.

  976. You're everywhere.

  977. You see everything.

  978. Then he says,

  979. God,

  980. you know

  981. everything.

  982. Word we use there

  983. is omniscient.

  984. You know everything.

  985. It's not like that

  986. champion on Jeopardy.

  987. He knows most of the questions.

  988. He knows everything.

  989. Everything.

  990. Everything.

  991. He saw it all.

  992. He created it all.

  993. He thought it all.

  994. He imagined it all.

  995. He spoke it all

  996. into existence.

  997. There's nothing

  998. he doesn't know.

  999. You know what keeps you

  1000. from making perfect decisions?

  1001. Lack of knowledge.

  1002. If you knew everything,

  1003. you'd never make

  1004. a bad decision.

  1005. God knows everything.

  1006. So he says,

  1007. God,

  1008. you are everywhere

  1009. and you know everything

  1010. and you're all powerful.

  1011. You spoke the world

  1012. into existence.

  1013. What kind of power

  1014. is that?

1015. That you just think it

  1016. and say it

  1017. and it is.

  1018. Now,

  1019. in view of that,

  1020. here's his conclusion.

  1021. Look at verse 22

  1022. and 23.

  1023. Search me,

  1024. God,

  1025. and know my heart.

  1026. Test me

  1027. and know my concerns.

  1028. See if there is

  1029. any offensive way

  1030. in me

  1031. and lead me

  1032. in the way

  1033. everlasting.

  1034. Wow.

  1035. I don't know

  1036. if that sunk in.

  1037. Do you get

  1038. what he's saying there?

1039. In view of what he said

1040. in his first 22 verses?

  1041. Let me put it

  1042. in perspective

1043. for you if you don't get it.

  1044. You're a CEO

  1045. of a company.

  1046. You go tomorrow morning

  1047. to your office.

  1048. You're singing,

  1049. listening to the radio.

  1050. You pull up

  1051. in the parking space

  1052. and there's

  1053. the 60-minute truck

  1054. and it's in your

  1055. parking lot.

  1056. Or there's

  1057. the 2020 truck

  1058. and you get out

  1059. and they got cameras

  1060. going and they got

  1061. microphones,

1062. they shove it in your face

  1063. and they said,

  1064. we're here because

  1065. we're launching today

  1066. a full-scale

  1067. investigation

  1068. of you

  1069. because we hear

  1070. you're practicing

  1071. corrupt business

  1072. practices.

  1073. Makes you a little

  1074. nervous,

  1075. wouldn't it?

  1076. I mean,

  1077. have you ever thought

  1078. about running

  1079. for President

  1080. of the United States?

  1081. When you sign on

  1082. to run for President

  1083. of the United States,

1084. I want to tell you

  1085. something,

  1086. in about three hours,

  1087. they know every move

  1088. you've ever made

  1089. in your life.

  1090. They know everything

  1091. about,

  1092. that's government

  1093. though.

  1094. This is God

  1095. David's talking to.

  1096. And he says,

  1097. God,

  1098. you see it all,

  1099. you're everywhere,

  1100. you know everything,

  1101. you're all powerful,

  1102. I'm inviting you.

  1103. He's actually

  1104. giving the invitation.

  1105. He's not just

  1106. subject to it.

  1107. He says,

  1108. God,

  1109. I'm inviting you

  1110. to do a full-scale

  1111. investigation of my life.

  1112. Now you're probably

  1113. thinking,

  1114. he's crazy.

  1115. Can you imagine

  1116. what that's going

  1117. to turn up?

  1118. Why would he do

  1119. such a thing?

  1120. I'll tell you why.

  1121. Because he knew

  1122. what it was like

  1123. to harbor

  1124. unconfessed sin

  1125. in his heart

  1126. and how far away

1127. it took him from God

  1128. and he doesn't

  1129. ever want to go

  1130. there again.

  1131. And he says,

  1132. oh God,

  1133. that's why he's a man

  1134. after God's own heart.

  1135. God,

1136. I know what it is

1137. to be right with you

1138. and I know what it is

1139. to not be right with you

  1140. and I don't ever want

  1141. to not be right

  1142. with you again.

  1143. And I'm begging you,

  1144. oh God,

  1145. reveal to me

1146. any sin in my life

  1147. and if you do,

1148. I'll confess it to you.

  1149. Now,

  1150. I wish we could

  1151. wrap this up

  1152. neatly in just

  1153. a moment or two

  1154. but we can't.

1155. We won't even be able

1156. to do it next week

1157. but I'm going to show you

  1158. what real genuine

  1159. confession looks like

1160. but I'm going to tell you

  1161. where it begins.

  1162. It begins by knowing

  1163. the truth about yourself

  1164. and the only way

  1165. you're ever going to

1166. know the truth about yourself

  1167. if you can't even

  1168. trust your own memory

  1169. because you've glossed

  1170. over many things.

  1171. I've glossed over

  1172. many things

1173. but I'm going to tell you

  1174. something,

  1175. God hadn't.

  1176. He saw everything

  1177. that ever went down

  1178. in your life

1179. and He's not forgotten it.

  1180. And if you would

  1181. pray that prayer,

  1182. if you'd be willing

  1183. and daring enough

  1184. to pray that prayer

  1185. this morning,

  1186. we could begin

  1187. that process

  1188. of your restoration.

  1189. You're getting

1190. a fresh start with God.

  1191. If you would be

  1192. man enough

  1193. or woman enough

  1194. to say,

  1195. God,

  1196. there are things

  1197. I've done

  1198. I don't even remember.

  1199. I just kind of

  1200. swept all those

  1201. under the rug

  1202. by saying

1203. at the end of the night,

1204. forgive me of my sins

  1205. and my shortcomings.

  1206. Okay,

  1207. I'm good

  1208. but you're not good.

  1209. Would you pray

  1210. that prayer

  1211. and would you

  1212. begin to get ready

1213. for God to show you

1214. would you pray it today

  1215. and tonight

  1216. and tomorrow

  1217. and the next day

  1218. and the next day

  1219. and the next day

  1220. until we meet again

  1221. and just begin

  1222. to catalog God

  1223. here's what's wrong

  1224. with me

1225. and I need to write

  1226. some of these things.

  1227. Show me how

  1228. I treat my wife,

1229. how I treat my husband,

1230. how I treat my children,

1231. how I treat my employees,

1232. how I treat my neighbors,

  1233. how I respond

1234. to what your word says.

  1235. Listen,

1236. you don't get in this shape

  1237. just by committing

  1238. adultery and murder.

  1239. It's whatever sin

1240. is present in your life

1241. that you've just kind of

  1242. covered over

  1243. and swept behind you.

  1244. Okay,

  1245. I'm good to go.

  1246. I'm an okay guy.

  1247. It comes down

1248. to you want to play church

1249. or do business with God.

1250. You really want to have

  1251. a real meaningful relationship

  1252. with God

1253. or you just want to

  1254. play at it.

1255. Lawrence is going to lead us.

1256. I'm going to ask you

  1257. to stand your feet

1258. and I'm going to ask you

  1259. even,

  1260. I don't care if you sing

1261. a word of the song,

1262. what I'd like you to do

  1263. is at least begin

  1264. that prayer with God.

  1265. Maybe you just need

1266. to read those two verses.

  1267. Just say,

  1268. God,

  1269. do a full-scale investigation

  1270. in my life

  1271. begin right now today

  1272. showing me

1273. what I need to confess to you.

  1274. Would you do that?

  1275. Let's stand.

  1276. Lawrence lead us

  1277. if you will.

  1278. Thank you.
