  1. If you have your Bibles, turn with me to the book of Judges chapter 13.

    Judges 13 chapter mention

  2. We're continuing our study about choices.

  3. And today I want to preach about the consequences of our choices.

  4. And we've chosen to use Samson as the life we're going to look at.

  5. We're going to do a case study of his life and read about six, seven passages,

  6. just real brief little passages,

  7. and see what conclusions we can draw from what we've read about his life

  8. because I think he's a wonderful example of what we're trying to say to you this morning.

  9. Before I do that, I want to read just a single verse.

  10. You don't have to even turn to it.

  11. You may put it on the screen. I think you're going to.

  12. It's in Proverbs 13, 15.

  13. And this is what it says,

  14. Good understanding gives favor, but the way of the transgressor is hard.

  15. We had a fellow on our staff years ago who did counseling with a lot of different folks

  16. who had addictions, all kinds of problems.

  17. And he would often say to them as he would listen to them tell their story,

  18. at the conclusion of a sentence or a paragraph,

  19. they would look up and he would say,

  20. Yeah, I'm sorry.

  21. He said, The way of the transgressor is hard.

  22. And they would talk a little bit more

  23. and they would tell something else that had gone amiss in their life.

  24. And he would again repeat that phrase, driving home that biblical idea

  25. that the way of the transgressor is hard.

  26. And that's something we all need to think about

  27. and remember in our life when we make bad decisions.

  28. And I want to tell you, I've made a host of them

  29. and every one of us in this room have.

  30. So don't think that you're being singled out this morning.

  31. Everybody, if you live long, you're going to make some bad, bad choices.

  32. But when we do, we shouldn't be surprised

  33. to find that what the scripture tells us is true.

  34. The way of the transgressor is hard.

  35. Boy, it's tough living life.

  36. But it's especially tough when you make bad, bad choices.

  37. In Exodus chapter 20, we're given the Ten Commandments.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  38. I'm sure most of you, if not all of you, are aware of that.

  39. You get ten statements there, nine of them negative,

  40. one of them positive.

  41. And they're admonitions from God.

  42. Don't do this.

  43. And that one single one, do this.

  44. Honor your father and mother.

  45. Your days may be long upon the land.

  46. The Lord thy God giveth thee.

  47. If you read the scripture from Genesis to Revelation,

  48. you find in the Old and the New Testament alike

  49. that God continually uses men to tell us,

  50. here's some things you want to avoid.

  51. Don't do these things.

  52. And then there are other things.

  53. Paul, for instance, in Colossians 3,

  54. admonishes us to do certain things,

  55. to put on certain behaviors,

  56. to reflect certain ideas and behaviors

  57. in our walk and in our life.

  58. Jesus does that in the Sermon on the Mount, you'll recall.

  59. So, if you think about it,

  60. what that indicates to us is this.

  61. We have a choice in the life we live.

  62. You ever thought about it that way?

  63. The scripture would never tell us,

  64. don't do this,

  65. if it were impossible for you not to do that.

  66. The scripture would never admonish us,

  67. do this.

  68. God would be rather mean in telling us,

  69. do this,

  70. if it weren't possible for us to do that.

  71. You understand that?

  72. So, we have a choice in the life we live.

  73. And the choices we make in life

  74. determine, in many respects,

  75. the course our life takes.

  76. Now, a lot of folk think that it's fate,

  77. it's just God decides everything in our lives,

  78. we don't have much voice in it,

  79. circumstances determine,

  80. this determines, that determines,

  81. my parents determine,

  82. but I don't have much say in the life I live.

  83. I'll tell you something,

  84. that is not true.

  85. God certainly has predetermined

  86. certain things about you

  87. you're never going to change.

  88. And there are certain circumstances

  89. and environments we live in

  90. that impact our choices.

  91. They impact,

  92. they don't make the choice,

  93. but they impact that choice.

  94. We've all seen folk in our lives

  95. who you look at them and you think,

  96. man, where this guy comes from

  97. and the situation he finds himself in

  98. and even just who he is as a person,

  99. nothing he's done,

  100. but just the life that's been put upon him,

  101. he doesn't have much shot at making it.

  102. And to our amazement, what happens?

  103. Sometimes they just rise to the top

  104. and just live incredible, incredible lives.

  105. And I could give you a list of names of people

  106. I've known personally who that's the case.

  107. You look at them and on the outside you think,

  108. they just don't have much of a chance.

  109. But boy, they just soar in life.

  110. One of my best friends in that category.

  111. And I've also seen this so many times.

  112. Here are people who are given every opportunity.

  113. I mean, they just are blessed with everything.

  114. They've got looks, they've got smarts,

  115. they're athletic, they're that.

  116. And you just think,

  117. they're going to just knock the top out,

  118. so to speak, in life.

  119. But you look at them

  120. and over the course of their life,

  121. they're pretty much dismal failures.

  122. Not in every case.

  123. I don't mean to imply that

  124. everybody who's born in that kind of situation

  125. is always going to fail.

  126. They're not.

  127. Most of them are going to do well.

  128. But sometimes you're surprised to think,

  129. hey, is it this person ends up like this

  130. when they seeming they had everything going for them?

  131. Can I tell you what that's about?

  132. It's about the choices we make in life.

  133. You are not the victim of fate.

  134. And secondly, a lot of people think,

  135. well, okay, I have a choice,

  136. but that choice just doesn't matter much.

  137. It matters to a huge degree.

  138. Every choice you make matters.

  139. Which leads me to the third thing.

  140. Choices always come with consequences.

  141. Choices.

  142. Choices always come with consequences.

  143. When you act in a certain fashion,

  144. make a certain decision,

  145. there's a consequence that comes along with that.

  146. Good or bad, right?

  147. You make some choices that pays,

  148. well, great dividends in your life.

  149. You make other choices,

  150. and boy, you just reap heartache over that.

  151. Two quick things I'm going to say,

  152. I'm going to jump in the message.

  153. One is this.

  154. If I were a parent or a grandparent,

  155. and I am, and I've tried to do this,

  156. and I'm admonishing you to do the same,

  157. you instill in your children,

  158. you have a choice.

  159. Can I just be real honest with you?

  160. I am sick to hear of hearing people talk,

  161. and they've been doing it since I was a boy,

  162. but it's grown more and more,

  163. that voice is louder and louder,

  164. peer pressure.

  165. I want to tell you something.

  166. Peer pressure is out there,

  167. and it's real,

  168. and I'm not denying that,

  169. but I'm just telling you,

  170. you have defaulted.

  171. If you come to the place that you think

  172. because of all this peer pressure,

  173. you don't have a choice.

  174. You do.

  175. And I'm not just talking to teenagers.

  176. I'm talking to young adults,

  177. and middle-aged adults,

  178. and older adults.

  179. You get roped into believing,

  180. I just don't have a choice

  181. because here's how the whole world's going,

  182. and here's what society's saying,

  183. here's what my friends are doing,

  184. and here's what they're telling me to do.

  185. Here's what my family's counseling me to do.

  186. Don't buy into that idea

  187. that you don't have a choice

  188. because you do.

  189. And secondly,

  190. teach your children

  191. there are consequences that come

  192. as a result of the choices you make.

  193. I'm going to hit on this later

  194. at the end of the message,

  195. but let me just briefly

  196. plant the idea in your mind now.

  197. You are not doing your child,

  198. your grandchild,

  199. a favor when they make a bad decision,

  200. and you rescue them

  201. and bail them out.

  202. You may think,

  203. well, I'm just being loving.

  204. No, you're not.

  205. You're depriving them of learning

  206. one of the lessons

  207. God intends for them to learn

  208. from the time

  209. their little bitty children

  210. own up through adulthood,

  211. and that is,

  212. with choices come consequences.

  213. It's not that I'm pounding on them,

  214. and I'm wanting them to see,

  215. see what you did was so bad?

  216. I'll stand there at their side

  217. and walk with them through that crisis,

  218. but I want to tell you something,

  219. I don't want to be the one

  220. who rescues them

  221. from the heartache

  222. that they have brought on themselves

  223. by their bad decision,

  224. because when I do that,

  225. I'm telling you something.

  226. Here's the lesson they learned.

  227. Mom and Dad bail me out today.

  228. They'll bail me out down the road.

  229. When you start in the third grade,

  230. bail in that little third grader out

  231. because he doesn't do his homework,

  232. and you send that crazy excuse

  233. to the teacher,

  234. says, well, he couldn't do it

  235. because the cat ate it,

  236. or he couldn't do it

  237. because we were away,

  238. and we were doing this

  239. or doing that,

  240. you're not doing him any favor.

  241. When you finish that science project for him

  242. rather than let him get an F,

  243. you've not done him any favor at all.

  244. Now, I want to show you

  245. a good biblical example of that.

  246. Go with me to the book of Judges.

  247. We're going to look real hurriedly.

  248. We've got to move fast.

  249. Look at chapter 13

  250. and verse 1 through 3,

  251. and then here's what we're going to do.

  252. I'm just going to let the cat out of the bag

  253. before we get there.

  254. Every one of these passages,

  255. as I read them,

  256. I want you to be surmising,

  257. what does this tell me about Samson?

  258. We're going to do a case study of his life.

  259. What does this teach me about Samson?

  260. Well, look at verses 1 to 3 in chapter 13.

  261. The Israelites again did

  262. what was evil in the Lord's sight,

  263. so the Lord handed them over

  264. to the Philistines 40 years.

  265. They were always their nemesis.

  266. Verse 2,

  267. There was a certain man from Zorah

  268. from the family of Dan

  269. whose name was Manoah.

  270. His wife was barren and had no children.

  271. The angel of the Lord appeared to the woman

  272. and said to her,

  273. It is true that you are barren

  274. and have no children,

  275. but you will conceive

  276. and give birth to a son.

  277. Now please be careful

  278. not to drink wine

  279. or other alcoholic beverages

  280. or to eat anything unclean.

  281. For indeed you will conceive

  282. and give birth to a son.

  283. You must never cut his hair

  284. because the boy will be a Nazarite

  285. to God from birth

  286. and he will begin to save Israel

  287. from the power of the Philistines.

  288. So what do we learn

  289. from these three verses

  290. we've just read?

  291. Here's the first thing.

  292. Here's this couple

  293. who have always wanted a child.

  294. Now, in all likelihood,

  295. I don't know who all is here today,

  296. but there's probably somebody

  297. in this audience,

  298. probably more than one or two couples,

  299. who can identify with Manoah

  300. and his wife.

  301. You've wanted kids,

  302. you've tried to have kids,

  303. you can't have kids.

  304. It's a pitiful situation.

  305. But then suddenly,

  306. something changes

  307. and you now are expecting a baby.

  308. Boy, those couples

  309. who've tried and worked hard

  310. to have a baby

  311. and they can't

  312. and suddenly they become pregnant.

  313. There is a joy in their face

  314. and in their life

  315. that's just,

  316. you've seen it before,

  317. it's just incredible, right?

  318. They're so thrilled.

  319. At last, we're pregnant.

  320. That's how this couple was.

  321. Secondly, we know this.

  322. Even before prenatal care

  323. was a phrase,

  324. she was already getting

  325. good prenatal care.

  326. This angel,

  327. the Lord told her,

  328. he said,

  329. don't drink alcoholic beverages,

  330. don't eat food

  331. that will defile you,

  332. and the reason is because

  333. this is a special boy

  334. you're going to bear.

  335. So for her health,

  336. the health of the baby,

  337. for what the Spirit of God

  338. has told her through this angel,

  339. she just takes great care

  340. of herself during this pregnancy.

  341. Third thing I realize is this

  342. when I read these three verses,

  343. this boy is destined for greatness.

  344. Now, every one of you,

  345. when you first held your baby,

  346. if you're like me,

  347. you thought,

  348. pro football player, right?

  349. Smartest doctor right here

  350. who's ever lived, right?

  351. All those kind of things.

  352. We see our children

  353. as one day being great,

  354. but listen,

  355. God speaks to her

  356. through this angel

  357. and says,

  358. your baby is destined

  359. for greatness

  360. and even says,

  361. here's what it's going to be.

  362. He's going to be

  363. a great Savior of Israel.

  364. These are the chosen people of God.

  365. They brought them

  366. in the promised land.

  367. We know from reading this book,

  368. he became a judge in Israel.

  369. Not a judge

  370. with a black judicial robe,

  371. but a judge

  372. in the biblical sense

  373. who was a warrior.

  374. He was a champion,

  375. a war hero,

  376. if you will.

  377. He's going to rescue

  378. his people physically

  379. from the hands

  380. of the Philistine.

  381. So right off the bat,

  382. man,

  383. he's got good genes,

  384. good parents.

  385. He's destined for greatness.

  386. Look at the second passage.

  387. Look at chapter 14,

  388. verses 1 to 3.

  389. Samson went down to Timnah

  390. and saw a young Philistine woman there.

  391. He went back

  392. and told his father and mother,

  393. I have seen a young Philistine woman

  394. in Timnah.

  395. Now,

  396. get her for me

  397. as a wife.

  398. Well,

  399. that sounds a little bit abrasive,

  400. don't you think?

  401. I mean,

  402. get her for me

  403. as a wife.

  404. But his father and mother

  405. came to him,

  406. can't you find

  407. a young woman

  408. among your relatives

  409. or among any of our people?

  410. Must you go

  411. to the uncircumcised Philistines

  412. for a wife?

  413. So,

  414. again,

  415. what do we discover?

  416. Well,

  417. we discover

  418. as a young man,

  419. he's wanting to date

  420. a Philistine

  421. and even marry

  422. a Philistine girl.

  423. Now,

  424. to you,

  425. that's just a word.

  426. But in his society,

  427. man,

  428. that's a big deal.

  429. Because you see,

  430. when God

  431. allowed them

  432. to go in

  433. and take possession

  434. of the land,

  435. he gave clear instructions.

  436. This has been going on

  437. for years and years

  438. and years.

  439. don't marry

  440. outside the Hebrew race.

  441. And there was

  442. a track record

  443. that proved

  444. that was good advice.

  445. Both before

  446. and after this,

  447. ask Israel

  448. about King Ahab

  449. who married

  450. Jezebel,

  451. a foreign woman,

  452. and brought all

  453. that religious garbage

  454. with her

  455. into that marriage.

  456. And so God says,

  457. keep the race pure.

  458. Don't marry anybody

  459. but a Hebrew.

  460. He had parents

  461. who told him,

  462. advised him,

  463. hey,

  464. here's what the Scripture says.

  465. Here's what God says.

  466. Why do you want

  467. to go marry

  468. this philistine?

  469. Don't do that.

  470. Go get me

  471. that woman.

  472. I want to marry.

  473. He's pretty strong-willed,

  474. don't you think?

  475. He doesn't heed

  476. the advice

  477. of his parents.

  478. I want to ask

  479. for a show of hands.

  480. I wouldn't embarrass

  481. anybody here,

  482. but I want to tell you

  483. something.

  484. Every one of us

  485. in this room

  486. were parents.

  487. There's been some

  488. point in your life,

  489. they may have

  490. heeded 99%

  491. of your advice,

  492. but there's not

  493. a parent in this room

  494. at some time

  495. you looked at your child

  496. and you said,

  497. don't do,

  498. and they did,

  499. right?

  500. Or you said,

  501. do this,

  502. and they didn't,

  503. right?

  504. So sometimes

  505. our words fall

  506. on deaf ears.

  507. I have a feeling

  508. by looking at

  509. his response,

  510. I don't want to

  511. wrongly judge him.

  512. I have a feeling

  513. this young man

  514. who his parents

  515. may have doted on him,

  516. I get the feeling

  517. here's a young guy

  518. who he doesn't know

  519. the word no.

  520. I mean,

  521. he's not used

  522. to hearing

  523. the word no.

  524. He certainly

  525. has not been

  526. willing to

  527. easily accept

  528. the word no.

  529. Look at the third

  530. passage,

  531. chapter 14,

  532. this time

  533. verses 5 through 7.

  534. Samson went down

  535. to Timnah

  536. with his father

  537. and mother

  538. and came

  539. to the vineyards

  540. of Timnah.

  541. Suddenly a young lion

  542. came roaring

  543. at him.

  544. The spirit

  545. of the Lord

  546. took control

  547. of him

  548. and he tore

  549. the lion apart

  550. with his bare hands

  551. as he might have

  552. torn a young goat.

  553. But he did not

  554. tell his father

  555. or mother

  556. what he had done.

  557. Then he went

  558. and spoke to the woman

  559. because Samson

  560. wanted her.

  561. Well,

  562. what do we learn

  563. from this?

  564. A,

  565. he still got it

  566. bad for this

  567. Philistine girl,

  568. right?

  569. Have you ever seen

  570. your kids get

  571. head over heels

  572. in love with somebody

  573. and they just

  574. lose all reason?

  575. I mean,

  576. you can tell them

  577. until you're blue

  578. in the face,

  579. don't do it,

  580. and that's what,

  581. they're going

  582. in that direction.

  583. Well,

  584. we know that,

  585. first of all.

  586. But there's

  587. something else

  588. I see here too.

  589. And the only way

  590. I know to put it

  591. is this.

  592. He is freaky,

  593. freaky strong,

  594. right?

  595. Any of you

  596. ever been out

  597. walking in the

  598. neighborhood

  599. and a dog

  600. get after you?

  601. Kind of scares you

  602. a little bit,

  603. big dog,

  604. showing teeth,

  605. driving,

  606. snipping at your heels,

  607. you're trying

  608. to get away,

  609. you're looking

  610. for a stick

  611. or a rock

  612. and you're kicking

  613. him or trying

  614. to get away from him?

  615. This isn't

  616. a neighborhood

  617. dog.

  618. This is a lion.

  619. I mean,

  620. a lion.

  621. Can you imagine

  622. that?

  623. I mean,

  624. I just can't

  625. get my head

  626. around.

  627. A lion

  628. comes out

  629. of these vineyards

  630. and he attacks

  631. him.

  632. What does he do?

  633. He grabs that

  634. lion and he

  635. rips it as

  636. though it

  637. were a baby

  638. goat.

  639. He just

  640. tears it to

  641. shreds.

  642. I'm going

  643. to tell you

  644. something.

  645. He's a bad

  646. dude.

  647. He is

  648. freaky,

  649. freaky strong.

  650. He's

  651. otherworldly

  652. strong.

  653. You know

  654. somebody strong

  655. and picking.

  656. Some of you

  657. right now

  658. got an image

  659. of somebody.

  660. No,

  661. you don't

  662. know anybody

  663. like Samson.

  664. I mean,

  665. he just

  666. rips this

  667. lion to

  668. shreds.

  669. He's freaky

  670. strong.

  671. Well,

  672. what else

  673. do we know?

  674. Look,

  675. you will,

  676. at chapter

  677. 14 and

  678. this time

  679. verse 10.

  680. His father

  681. went to

  682. visit the

  683. woman and

  684. Samson prepared

  685. a feast there

  686. as young men

  687. were accustomed

  688. to do.

  689. When the

  690. Philistine saw

  691. him,

  692. they brought

  693. 30 men to

  694. accompany him.

  695. Let me tell

  696. you a riddle,

  697. Samson said

  698. to them.

  699. If you can

  700. explain it to

  701. me during the

  702. seven days of

  703. the feast and

  704. figure it out,

  705. I will give

  706. you 30 linen

  707. garments and

  708. 30 exchanges

  709. of clothes.

  710. But if you

  711. can't explain

  712. it to me,

  713. you must give

  714. me 30 linen

  715. garments and

  716. 30 changes

  717. of clothes.

  718. Tell us your

  719. riddle,

  720. they replied.

  721. Let's hear it.

  722. You know what

  723. they're thinking?

  724. He's all

  725. muscle.

  726. He doesn't

  727. have anything

  728. between his

  729. ears.

  730. He's one,

  731. we're 30.

  732. Give us your

  733. riddle.

  734. Give us seven

  735. days.

  736. We're going to

  737. take your

  738. clothes.

  739. So he said

  740. to them,

  741. out of the

  742. eater came

  743. something to

  744. eat and out

  745. of the strong

  746. came something

  747. sweet.

  748. Now,

  749. most of you

  750. here already

  751. know this

  752. story,

  753. but some of

  754. you maybe

  755. don't.

  756. if you

  757. read between

  758. the verses

  759. we read

  760. just prior

  761. to this

  762. and what

  763. we've read

  764. just here,

  765. you find

  766. that he

  767. keeps going

  768. back and

  769. forth to

  770. Timna to

  771. see this

  772. girl.

  773. And on

  774. the way

  775. down there

  776. to see

  777. this girl

  778. one day,

  779. this lion

  780. comes running

  781. out and he

  782. tears it apart

  783. as we read

  784. just a minute

  785. ago.

  786. Here's what

  787. you didn't

  788. read.

  789. On a trip

  790. back home,

  791. he passes

  792. by that same

  793. lion's carcass

  794. and guess

  795. what?

  796. Bees have

  797. come,

  798. honeybees,

  799. and they

  800. have built

  801. a hive

  802. inside the

  803. carcass of

  804. the lion.

  805. And so

  806. it puzzles

  807. him.

  808. He reaches

  809. down and

  810. he pulls

  811. out some

  812. honey and

  813. tastes it.

  814. And that's

  815. when he

  816. comes up

  817. with this

  818. idea about

  819. this riddle.

  820. Who would

  821. have ever

  822. thought you'd

  823. get honey

  824. out of a

  825. lion?

  826. Now,

  827. I want to

  828. tell you

  829. something.

  830. If I'm

  831. looking at

  832. this and

  833. putting all

  834. this together

  835. and trying

  836. to get good

  837. info on

  838. Samson,

  839. do a profile

  840. of Samson,

  841. you know

  842. what I

  843. immediately

  844. determine

  845. from that?

  846. If you've

  847. got the

  848. image,

  849. here's this

  850. big muscle

  851. bound guy

  852. and he's

  853. just stupid,

  854. you're wrong.

  855. This guy

  856. has got

  857. not only

  858. brawn,

  859. he's got

  860. brains.

  861. I mean,

  862. you read

  863. this poem,

  864. right?

  865. That's pretty

  866. smart writing.

  867. I mean,

  868. that's pretty

  869. cool thinking.

  870. He's a guy

  871. with some

  872. good ideas.

  873. He's not

  874. anybody's

  875. dummy.

  876. I think

  877. God has

  878. just positioned

  879. him.

  880. He's

  881. given him

  882. everything he

  883. needs to be

  884. successful in

  885. life.

  886. He's given

  887. him physical

  888. strength,

  889. but listen,

  890. he's given

  891. him intellect

  892. as well.

  893. Now,

  894. here's the

  895. sad thing.

  896. We often

  897. mistakenly think

  898. if you're

  899. smart,

  900. boy,

  901. you can

  902. just write

  903. your own

  904. ticket.

  905. You're

  906. smart.

  907. You're

  908. just going

  909. to be

  910. smart in

  911. everything.

  912. Can I

  913. tell you

  914. something?

  915. I know

  916. folk who

  917. are real,

  918. real,

  919. real smart

  920. in one

  921. area of

  922. life.

  923. They don't

  924. have the

  925. sense to

  926. get in

  927. out of the

  928. brain in

  929. another

  930. area of

  931. life.

  932. Common

  933. sense just

  934. isn't so

  935. common

  936. anymore.

  937. Have you

  938. found that?

  939. I mean,

  940. I know a

  941. lot of

  942. folk who

  943. they're

  944. brainiacs.

  945. I mean,

  946. they can

  947. think about

  948. things I

  949. can't even

  950. consider,

  951. but it

  952. doesn't mean

  953. they're smart

  954. in every

  955. walk of

  956. life.

  957. It doesn't

  958. mean they

  959. make good

  960. decisions.

  961. There's a

  962. difference in

  963. being smart

  964. and having

  965. good judgment.

  966. You know

  967. what I mean?

  968. You've

  969. known folk

  970. who didn't

  971. have a lot

  972. of education

  973. who weren't

  974. just the

  975. sharpest

  976. pencil in

  977. the box,

  978. but they

  979. used what

  980. they had

  981. and they

  982. had good

  983. judgment.

  984. They didn't

  985. make bad

  986. mistakes.

  987. Samson is

  988. lacking that.

  989. Super smart,

  990. not very good

  991. judgment at

  992. all.

  993. Well,

  994. I want you

  995. to see

  996. something else

  997. about him.

  998. Look at

  999. verse 10

  1000. to 14.

  1001. We just

  1002. read that.

  1003. One last

  1004. thing I want

  1005. to say about

  1006. that before

  1007. we press

  1008. on.

  1009. One of

  1010. the things I

  1011. know about

  1012. him from

  1013. reading this

  1014. passage,

  1015. you probably

  1016. have already

  1017. guessed it,

  1018. he's a

  1019. risk taker.

  1020. He's a

  1021. gambler.

  1022. And I don't

  1023. mean in the

  1024. sense that he's

  1025. going around

  1026. gambling a lot.

  1027. I don't know if

1028. he put down a lot

  1029. of money a lot

  1030. of times or not,

  1031. but I know this

  1032. from what he

  1033. did.

  1034. He likes

  1035. living on

  1036. the edge.

  1037. He likes

  1038. getting right up

  1039. to the edge

  1040. of life.

  1041. He likes

  1042. living on

  1043. the edge.

  1044. He pushes

  1045. the envelope.

  1046. When I use

  1047. those kind

  1048. of phrases,

  1049. does it bring

  1050. somebody to

  1051. mind in

  1052. your life?

  1053. A son,

  1054. a daughter,

  1055. maybe you,

  1056. maybe somebody

  1057. you work with,

  1058. they're just

  1059. always taking

  1060. risks.

  1061. You say,

  1062. well,

  1063. preacher,

  1064. how do you

  1065. get that out

  1066. of what we

  1067. just read?

  1068. Here's how I

  1069. get it.

  1070. I know because

  1071. I know the rest

  1072. of the story.

  1073. He doesn't

  1074. have the money

  1075. to cover this

  1076. bet.

  1077. He's just

  1078. bet 30

  1079. garments.

  1080. He doesn't

  1081. own.

  1082. He's bet

  1083. 30 changes

  1084. of clothes.

  1085. He doesn't

  1086. have.

  1087. So he's

  1088. risking something.

  1089. He doesn't

  1090. have to pay

  1091. off if he

  1092. loses.

  1093. You know

  1094. why?

  1095. Because he's

  1096. arrogant,

  1097. because he's

  1098. confident,

  1099. because he's

  1100. impetuous.

  1101. He thinks

  1102. he's a sure

  1103. thing to win

  1104. this thing,

  1105. which is what

  1106. risk takers

  1107. often do.

  1108. They don't

  1109. consider,

  1110. what if this

  1111. thing goes

  1112. sour?

  1113. They just

  1114. want what

  1115. they want.

  1116. They're driven

  1117. by greed.

  1118. They're impetuous.

  1119. And they don't

  1120. see any way

  1121. this can go

  1122. bad when there

  1123. might be a

  1124. hundred ways

  1125. it could go

  1126. sideways.

  1127. But he

  1128. doesn't see

  1129. that.

  1130. You understand

  1131. that?

  1132. So he just

  1133. puts himself

  1134. out there.

  1135. Well, how in

  1136. the world

  1137. could they

  1138. figure out

  1139. this riddle?

  1140. Well, you're

  1141. about to find

  1142. out.

  1143. Look, if you

  1144. will, at the

  1145. fifth passage.

  1146. The fifth

  1147. passage.

  1148. Beginning in

  1149. the latter

  1150. portion of

  1151. verse 14,

  1152. we read

  1153. these words.

  1154. After three

  1155. days, they

  1156. were unable

  1157. to explain

  1158. the riddle.

  1159. On the

  1160. fourth day,

  1161. they said to

  1162. Samson's wife,

  1163. persuade your

  1164. husband to

  1165. explain the

  1166. riddle to

  1167. us, or we

  1168. will burn

  1169. you and your

  1170. father's

  1171. household to

  1172. death.

  1173. Did you

  1174. invite us

  1175. here to rob

  1176. us?

  1177. So Samson's

  1178. wife came to

  1179. him weeping

  1180. and said,

  1181. you hate me

  1182. and you

  1183. don't love

  1184. me.

  1185. You told

  1186. my people the

  1187. riddle but

  1188. haven't explained

  1189. it to me.

  1190. Look, he said,

  1191. I haven't even

  1192. explained it to my

  1193. father and

  1194. mother, so why

  1195. should I

  1196. explain it to

  1197. you?

  1198. She wept the

  1199. whole seven

  1200. days of the

  1201. feast and at

  1202. last on the

  1203. seventh day, he

  1204. explained it to

  1205. her because she

  1206. had nagged him

  1207. so much.

  1208. And all the

  1209. men said,

  1210. amen.

  1211. Then she

  1212. explained it to

  1213. her.

  1214. Then she

  1215. explained it to

  1216. her people.

  1217. On the

  1218. seventh day

  1219. before sunset,

  1220. the men of

  1221. the city said

  1222. to him,

  1223. what is sweeter

  1224. than honey and

  1225. what is stronger

  1226. than a lion?

  1227. Well, she

  1228. did him in.

  1229. Now, let's

  1230. just be honest

  1231. a minute because

  1232. we always see

  1233. this from

  1234. Samson's

  1235. perspective, but

  1236. if you're that

  1237. girl, you

  1238. haven't known

  1239. him long.

  1240. You don't

  1241. know him

  1242. well.

  1243. This is an

  1244. arranged marriage.

  1245. They've come

  1246. threatening to

  1247. kill you and

  1248. your family if

  1249. you don't tell

  1250. them the answer

  1251. to the riddle.

  1252. I'm going to

  1253. tell you

  1254. something.

  1255. I understand

  1256. exactly why she

  1257. did what she

  1258. did.

  1259. I'm not

  1260. excusing it.

  1261. She should

  1262. have found

  1263. another way.

  1264. He shouldn't

  1265. have put her

  1266. though under

  1267. that kind of

  1268. circumstance.

  1269. Wouldn't you

  1270. agree?

  1271. So, it's

  1272. just a mess.

  1273. And what I

  1274. realize is

  1275. this, this

  1276. guy cannot

  1277. say no to

  1278. a pretty face.

  1279. And I'm

  1280. going to tell

  1281. you something.

  1282. There are a

  1283. lot of guys

  1284. out there and

  1285. gals like that,

  1286. but more guys

  1287. than gals, if

  1288. I'm honest about

  1289. this morning,

  1290. my experience

  1291. has been,

  1292. who they just

  1293. have such an

  1294. attraction to the

  1295. opposite sex,

  1296. they lose their

  1297. mind.

  1298. You know what

  1299. I'm saying?

  1300. They just so

  1301. want this other

  1302. person, they

  1303. just lose their

  1304. mind.

  1305. Well, look at a

  1306. sixth passage

  1307. found in verses

  1308. 19 and 20 of

  1309. chapter 14, the

  1310. last two verses.

  1311. The Spirit of the

  1312. Lord took control

  1313. of him and he

  1314. went down to

  1315. Ashkelon and

  1316. killed 30 of

  1317. their men.

  1318. Did you just

  1319. hear what I

  1320. said?

  1321. He killed 30

  1322. other men.

  1323. I want to ask

  1324. you to raise

  1325. your hand if

  1326. you know

  1327. somebody in

  1328. your lifetime

  1329. who's been a

  1330. murderer.

  1331. But I know

  1332. this, you

  1333. don't know

  1334. anybody who's

  1335. murdered 30

  1336. people.

  1337. I mean, when

  1338. you start talking

  1339. about people who

  1340. killed 30

  1341. people, that's a

  1342. lot of folk.

  1343. That's a lot of

  1344. people.

  1345. This is a man

  1346. with a bad,

  1347. bad, uncontrollable

  1348. temper who has

  1349. put himself in

  1350. between a rock and

  1351. a hard place and

  1352. now he kills 30

  1353. people in order to

  1354. capture their

  1355. clothes.

  1356. He stripped them

  1357. and gave their

  1358. clothes to those

  1359. who had explained

  1360. the riddle in a

  1361. rage.

  1362. Samson turned to

  1363. his father's house,

  1364. returned to his

  1365. father's house,

  1366. and his wife was

1367. given to one of the

  1368. men who had

  1369. accompanied him.

  1370. Boy, here's the

  1371. final thing I see

  1372. about Samson I'm

  1373. going to tell you

  1374. today.

  1375. He is bad with

  1376. women.

  1377. He's lost his

  1378. marriage and is

  1379. only seven days

  1380. old.

  1381. He's bad with

  1382. women.

  1383. And this isn't the

  1384. only episode he has

  1385. with women, he has

  1386. others, but the

  1387. climactic ending

  1388. relationship is with

  1389. a woman by the

  1390. name of Delilah,

  1391. another Philistine

  1392. woman, and you

  1393. know that story.

  1394. That's the one that

  1395. makes Samson famous.

  1396. It's found in

  1397. chapter 16, so I'm

  1398. not going to read

  1399. it.

  1400. Let's just rehearse

  1401. it together for a

  1402. moment.

  1403. Remember how that

  1404. story goes down?

  1405. He goes to her

  1406. house.

  1407. They're talking.

  1408. He's wanting to be

  1409. with Delilah.

  1410. He's sweet-talking

  1411. her.

  1412. She's sweet-talking

  1413. him.

  1414. The Philistines have

  1415. come unbeknownst to

  1416. Samson, and they say

  1417. to Delilah, find out

  1418. the source of his

  1419. strength.

  1420. There's got to be

  1421. something that makes

  1422. this guy so strong.

  1423. If you can discover

  1424. that, here's how we'll

  1425. reward you.

  1426. So she plays him.

1427. He's got his head in

1428. her lap, and she says,

  1429. Samson, you're so

  1430. good-looking.

  1431. You're so strong.

1432. Would you tell me the

  1433. secret of your strength?

1434. He probably tries to put

  1435. her off at first.

1436. Then he just makes up

  1437. this cockamamie tale.

  1438. And so, to his

  1439. amazement, when he goes

  1440. to sleep finally, she

  1441. does exactly what he

1442. says would rob him of

  1443. his strength.

  1444. And says, Samson, the

  1445. Philistines are upon

  1446. you.

1447. And he jumps up, and

  1448. it's obvious that was

  1449. not the truth.

  1450. Well, she allows him

1451. to lay back down in

1452. her lap, and I can see

  1453. her brushing his hair.

  1454. You're so good-looking,

  1455. Samson.

  1456. You're so strong.

1457. Man, I'm so lucky to

  1458. have you.

  1459. But you know what?

  1460. You and I, we're not as

1461. intimate as we need to

  1462. be because you just

1463. won't tell me the source

  1464. of your strength.

1465. You lied to me while I

  1466. go.

1467. Tell me what the real

  1468. source of your strength

  1469. is.

  1470. Now, I'm not a very

  1471. smart guy at all.

  1472. But you know what

  1473. should have been going

  1474. off in his head?

  1475. Wait a second.

  1476. I just told you how I

1477. go lie, but you used

1478. that lie against me, and

1479. if it had been the

  1480. source of my strength,

  1481. well, I'd be in big-time

  1482. trouble right now.

  1483. But that never

  1484. registers, apparently,

  1485. with Samson.

  1486. So he spins another

  1487. tale, but this time,

  1488. get this, this time,

  1489. it involves one aspect

  1490. of the story.

  1491. It involves his hair.

  1492. Sure enough, it's not

  1493. the truth.

  1494. She does the same

  1495. thing, tries to use

  1496. his strategy to make

  1497. him helpless.

  1498. They're upon you.

1499. They rush in the room.

1500. He's as strong as ever.

  1501. He causes them to

  1502. flee.

  1503. Third time, he's in

  1504. her lap.

  1505. Samson, you just

  1506. won't be honest with

  1507. me.

  1508. You won't tell me.

  1509. You don't love me.

1510. If you loved me, you'd

  1511. tell me.

  1512. Like the goofball he

1513. was, he tells her a

  1514. third story.

  1515. Again, not the truth,

  1516. but watch what's

  1517. happening.

  1518. Remember what I said

  1519. about he liked living

  1520. on the edge?

  1521. He tells another story

  1522. about his hair, but

  1523. this time he's getting

  1524. closer and closer to

  1525. telling him the real

  1526. secret.

  1527. She does that, again,

  1528. to no avail.

  1529. Fourth time, he's fed

  1530. up.

  1531. He's tired.

  1532. And he just says,

  1533. okay, here it is.

  1534. I'm a Nazirite.

  1535. I've been a Nazirite

1536. since the day I was

  1537. born.

  1538. I've never drank

  1539. alcohol.

  1540. I've never done this.

  1541. I've never shaved my

  1542. head.

  1543. If I cut my head, I'd

  1544. be like anybody else.

  1545. He falls asleep.

  1546. She does just that.

1547. They rush in, and his

  1548. strength is gone.

  1549. They power him down

  1550. and gouge out his

  1551. eyes.

  1552. Can you imagine the

  1553. inhumanity of that?

  1554. Can you imagine

  1555. taking your fingers and

  1556. ripping out somebody's

1557. eyes right out of the

  1558. socket?

  1559. That's what they do.

  1560. They hate him.

  1561. He's public enemy,

  1562. number one.

1563. You go to a Philistine

  1564. post office, and there's

  1565. Samson's picture.

1566. I mean, they hate him.

  1567. They hate him.

1568. He's killed so many of

  1569. their folks.

  1570. He's taken 300 foxes,

1571. tied them tail to tail,

1572. and put fire on their

1573. tails, and had them run

  1574. through their fields and

  1575. destroyed their landscape,

  1576. their economy.

  1577. They hate his guts.

1578. And finally, they got the

  1579. upper hand.

  1580. His strength is gone.

1581. They gouge out his eyes.

  1582. I want to show you a

  1583. pitiful, pitiful picture,

1584. and then I'm going to make

  1585. some summary statements,

  1586. and we'll close.

1587. Go with me, if you will,

  1588. to chapter 16, and I want

1589. you to look at verse 21.

  1590. The Philistines seized him

1591. and gouged out his eyes.

1592. They brought him down to

1593. Gaza and bound him with

1594. bronze shackles, and he was

1595. forced to grind grain in the

  1596. prison.

  1597. Here's this superhero,

1598. superhero in the minds of the

1599. little boys and girls in

  1600. Israel.

1601. Can you imagine a little boy

  1602. or girl passing Samson?

  1603. Hey, y'all.

  1604. Samson.

1605. Strongest guy in the world.

  1606. Philistines run from him.

1607. And I want you to look at him

  1608. now.

1609. Here he is in the basement of

1610. this prison, and he's pushing

1611. a lever around and around this

  1612. mill, grinding their grain.

1613. And his eyes, I don't mean to be

1614. grotesque, but his eyes are

  1615. gouged out.

  1616. It's not that he's blind.

1617. We just kind of think blind.

  1618. No.

1619. There's no replacements in these

  1620. sockets.

  1621. They're just empty.

1622. It's hard to look at him in the

  1623. face.

  1624. They're just empty sockets.

1625. And he is a shell of the man he

  1626. once was.

1627. And here's what I want to ask you.

1628. Who would have ever, ever, ever

  1629. guessed it?

1630. Who would have ever envisioned

1631. that's how he'll end up one day?

1632. So we go to him.

1633. And we say, Mr. Samson, do we have

  1634. a word with you?

  1635. We've been your fans.

1636. We've seen you in Israel.

1637. And man, you're so highly regarded

  1638. over there.

1639. But we look at you now and,

  1640. well, you're a mess.

  1641. Your strength is gone.

  1642. You're used to being a slave.

  1643. You're in shackles.

1644. You're not free to go and come as

  1645. you please.

1646. You can't get around unless somebody

1647. leads you by the hand.

1648. How did it get like this?

1649. How did it end up like this?

1650. You know what experience as a

1651. counselor tells me he would

1652. probably have said, if we're being

1653. honest about it this morning?

  1654. He'd have probably turned,

1655. especially in the early going,

1656. a day or two after it happened,

1657. in the early going, he'd have

1658. turned and he'd have looked at you

1659. and he said, it was that

  1660. stinking Delilah.

  1661. She did this.

  1662. I trusted her.

  1663. She nagged me.

1664. She begged me to tell.

1665. And I put my faith and trust in

1666. her because I loved her and wanted

  1667. to be with her.

1668. I wanted to be her husband.

  1669. And she did this.

  1670. It's her fault.

  1671. Well, those Philistines,

  1672. they're barbarians.

1673. Who would do this to a man?

  1674. Who would belittle?

1675. Why didn't they just kill me?

1676. Why didn't they just kill me

1677. instead of make me a prisoner

1678. and subject me to this kind

  1679. of lifestyle?

  1680. It's those barbaric Philistines.

  1681. They're to blame.

1682. Boy, if you'd had a lot of courage,

1683. you'd have really been tempted

  1684. to have said,

1685. Mrs. Sampson, with all due respect,

1686. didn't you do this to yourself?

1687. Isn't this kind of about the bad

  1688. choices you made?

1689. Do you bear any of the

  1690. responsibility for this?

1691. You say, well, certainly you had to.

1692. I want to tell you something.

1693. I meet a lot of people in life,

1694. have met a lot of people in life

1695. over the course of 50 years

  1696. of being a pastor.

1697. They never take any responsibility

  1698. at all.

  1699. It's their mama.

  1700. It's their daddy.

  1701. It's their grandparents.

1702. It's the house they lived in.

  1703. It's the job they didn't get

1704. or the job they were forced to do.

  1705. It's their bad spouse.

  1706. It's their rotten children.

  1707. It's their rotten parents.

  1708. It's the breaks.

  1709. It's God's fault.

1710. And they never come to grips

  1711. with, you know what?

1712. You made some real, real bad choices.

1713. Three things I'm going to say

  1714. and I close.

1715. One, no one is responsible

1716. for your choice but you.

1717. Just as no one is responsible

1718. for my choice but me.

1719. Have I been pressured at times?

  1720. Oh yeah.

  1721. You can't be a pastor

  1722. and not get pressure

  1723. from the outside

1724. and the inside and everywhere

1725. to do something that you know

1726. is not the right thing to do.

1727. But I'm going to tell you something.

1728. At the end of the day,

  1729. when I make a decision,

  1730. when I make a choice

1731. about anything in my life,

  1732. it's mine.

1733. I may not want to own it

  1734. but it's mine.

  1735. It's only mine.

  1736. And you can say,

1737. well my boss made me do that.

1738. That's how this company operates.

  1739. I wouldn't have a job.

  1740. No.

  1741. It was your decision.

  1742. Were they wrong?

  1743. Yeah, they were wrong.

1744. But that was their decision.

1745. You're responsible for your decision.

1746. So I'm going to tell you right now,

  1747. whatever bad thing

1748. you may have ever done in your life,

1749. whatever bad decision you made,

1750. the best thing you can do right now

1751. is to own up to it

1752. and say, you know what?

  1753. That was my decision.

1754. I know the circumstances were bad.

1755. I know the situation was bad.

  1756. The environment was bad.

  1757. A lot of pressure.

1758. But at the end of the day,

1759. I got to own that decision

1760. because I want to tell you something.

1761. I can never put it behind me.

1762. I can never repent of it.

1763. I can never move on

1764. until I come to own it.

1765. And you've made some bad decisions

  1766. in your life.

1767. I've made a lot of bad decisions

  1768. in my life.

  1769. The question is,

1770. have you ever owned them?

1771. Have you ever just stepped up

  1772. to the plate

1773. and put on your big boy pants

  1774. and said,

  1775. I own this.

  1776. This is mine.

  1777. I did this.

  1778. It's not anybody else's fault

  1779. but mine.

  1780. Secondly,

  1781. our choices,

  1782. as I said earlier,

  1783. have consequences.

  1784. They always do.

1785. It's called the law of the harvest.

  1786. Galatians 6-7 says this.

  1787. Listen.

  1788. Paul writes,

  1789. God is not mocked.

  1790. Be not deceived.

  1791. God is not mocked.

  1792. For whatsoever man sows,

1793. that shall he also reap.

1794. So if I do this good thing,

1795. I can expect something good

1796. to come out of it.

1797. But if I do a bad thing,

1798. I should expect to reap

  1799. a bad harvest.

  1800. You understand that?

  1801. Good decisions bring blessing.

  1802. Bad decisions bring heartache.

1803. And I know as parents

  1804. and grandparents,

1805. we want to do it on our children

  1806. and love our children

1807. and give them every opportunity

1808. to help them to rise to the top.

1809. I want to tell you something.

1810. The way you do that

1811. is not by doting on them

  1812. and erasing their mistakes

  1813. and saving them

  1814. and rushing in,

  1815. saving the day

  1816. and being the savior

  1817. and the hero

  1818. and bailing them out.

1819. The way you do that

  1820. is let them learn

1821. as a little bitty child

1822. and all the way through life,

  1823. I'm here for you.

  1824. I'll stand beside you

1825. but I'll not pay the penalty

  1826. for you.

1827. I'll not bail you out

1828. because I want to tell you,

1829. it's in their best interest

  1830. to learn

  1831. there are consequences

  1832. to our decisions.

  1833. I didn't plan to say this

  1834. and the service

1835. didn't say it in the last

  1836. but I know our time's late

1837. but I just feel so compelled

  1838. to tell you this.

  1839. I'm watching TV

1840. in about the year 2000

1841. and a news flash comes up.

  1842. There's been a shooting

  1843. in a middle school

  1844. in Alabama.

  1845. The cameras show

  1846. a little 14-year-old boy

  1847. he's being arrested

  1848. he's being put

  1849. into a squad car

  1850. he's taking his grandfather's shotgun

  1851. who he lives with

  1852. his grandfather

  1853. to school

  1854. and he shot

  1855. a schoolmate.

  1856. They're putting him

  1857. into the squad car

  1858. they're beating him over

1859. you know how they do

  1860. to keep him from

  1861. bumping their heads

  1862. and they're putting him

  1863. in the squad car

  1864. and he looks back

  1865. out the door

  1866. and there's a guy

  1867. with a camera there

1868. and the guy's asking him

  1869. what were you thinking?

1870. And this is what he said

  1871. I'll never forget

1872. he looks in the face

  1873. of the camera

  1874. and he says

1875. I just want to go home.

1876. I just want to go home

  1877. to my grandpa

  1878. I just want somebody

  1879. to take me home

  1880. to my grandpa

  1881. and as a parent

  1882. and a grandparent

1883. he just broke my heart

1884. because I thought to myself

1885. son you're never going home.

  1886. You're not

  1887. have your folks

  1888. not taught you?

  1889. There are consequences

  1890. to your actions

  1891. and your world

  1892. has just changed forever.

  1893. Forever.

  1894. And I'm telling you

  1895. and not just kids

  1896. and teenagers

  1897. and young adults

  1898. but middle-aged

  1899. adults

  1900. and older adults

  1901. boy you better think

  1902. before you act

  1903. because every action

  1904. has a consequence

  1905. and there's some

  1906. actions you take

  1907. they're not very significant

  1908. where I eat lunch

  1909. they don't matter

  1910. a whole lot

1911. but I'm going to tell you

  1912. something

  1913. if I'm unfaithful

  1914. to my wife

  1915. that can wreck

  1916. my whole life

  1917. if I take something

  1918. that's not mine

1919. if I deal under the table

  1920. if I'm not honest

  1921. boy that can have

  1922. the implications

  1923. that just

  1924. devastate

  1925. my whole life

  1926. do you understand that?

  1927. Teach your children

  1928. and by teach them

  1929. I don't mean

  1930. just verbally

  1931. tell them

1932. you got to let them

  1933. experience it

  1934. you got to be

  1935. standing there with them

  1936. and say

  1937. boy I'm sorry

  1938. and like my friend

  1939. put your arm around

  1940. and say

1941. the way of the transgressor

  1942. is hard isn't it?

  1943. boy I'm sorry son

  1944. I'm sorry daughter

1945. boy when you mess up

  1946. there's a price

  1947. to be paid in

  1948. and I'm sorry

  1949. I'm sorry you didn't

1950. get to go to Disney World

  1951. I'm sorry you didn't

1952. get to be on that

  1953. ball team

  1954. I'm sorry you didn't

  1955. get that scholarship

  1956. but we'll learn

  1957. from this

  1958. when we're going forward

  1959. way better thing

1960. to do than to rescue

  1961. them every time

  1962. they fail

  1963. thirdly

  1964. good choices

1965. lead to a good life

  1966. and poor choices

1967. lead to a bad life

  1968. of undue heartache

  1969. well if you spill

  1970. enough heartache

1971. we don't need to make

  1972. it harder on ourselves

1973. I close by telling you this

  1974. the book of

  1975. Proverbs

  1976. is about wisdom

  1977. it's called wisdom literature

  1978. that word wisdom

  1979. people think of this

  1980. white sage

  1981. long beard

  1982. he's like a contestant

  1983. on Jeopardy

1984. who knows all the answers

  1985. no

  1986. the word wisdom

  1987. actually means

  1988. skillful

  1989. and he was used

  1990. in a variety

  1991. of circumstances

1992. but let me just tell you

  1993. three of them

  1994. they used that word

  1995. wisdom

  1996. about skillful

  1997. of a surgeon

1998. who could take a scalpel

  1999. and cut somebody's body

  2000. and instead of doing

  2001. them harm

  2002. relieve them

  2003. of a bad

  2004. organ

  2005. or bad tissue

  2006. right

  2007. take skill

  2008. to do that

  2009. they used it

  2010. of a gem cutter

2011. who would take a stone

  2012. and carefully

  2013. take a hammer

  2014. examine that rock

  2015. carefully

  2016. and put that hammer

  2017. in exact place

  2018. and strike that

  2019. with a

  2020. that chisel

  2021. with a hammer

2022. in exactly the right spot

  2023. and you'd have

  2024. multiple good diamonds

2025. instead of just ruining it

  2026. they used it

  2027. of the navigator

  2028. at sea

  2029. in ancient days

2030. who could take a ship

2031. and in the middle of the night

  2032. without any of the

  2033. modern scientific methods

  2034. we have

  2035. take just a sectant

2036. and just a few tools

  2037. and a knowledge

  2038. of the stars

  2039. and he could guide

  2040. that ship

  2041. to its destination

  2042. that's skill

  2043. and that's what

  2044. the writer of Proverbs

  2045. is saying

  2046. leave your life

  2047. skillfully

2048. so that you do this

  2049. you're walking

  2050. through life

  2051. and here's this obstacle

  2052. and you just

  2053. step around that

2054. and you move over here

  2055. and here's another obstacle

2056. and you find a way

  2057. to get around it

  2058. and you just skillfully

  2059. walk through life

  2060. versus

  2061. you've seen those folk

  2062. who every day

  2063. they live

  2064. it's like a bull

  2065. in a china shop

  2066. they're just

  2067. wreaking havoc

  2068. and breaking things

  2069. and you just

2070. kind of shake your head

  2071. and say boy

  2072. it's just one disaster

  2073. after another

  2074. after another

2075. you know what that's from

  2076. a lifetime of making

  2077. bad bad bad choices

2078. so in the closing moments

  2079. of this sermon

2080. here's what I want you to do

2081. I want you to take a good

  2082. hard look at yourself

  2083. forget the past

  2084. you can't do anything

  2085. about that

  2086. but right now

  2087. today

2088. are you in the midst

2089. of making some bad decisions

  2090. some good decisions

  2091. some godly decisions

  2092. some ungodly decisions

  2093. some decisions

  2094. that will

  2095. help your family

  2096. some decisions

  2097. that could

  2098. train wreck

  2099. your family

  2100. what kind of decision

  2101. are you making

  2102. right now

  2103. today

  2104. financial decisions

  2105. social decisions

  2106. some of you

  2107. have friends

2108. I want to be honest

  2109. with you

2110. you ought to lose them

  2111. because they've got

  2112. your ear

  2113. they're speaking

  2114. things into your ear

  2115. that's influencing you

  2116. you're not even aware

  2117. at times they are

  2118. but they're influencing

  2119. you down a path

  2120. and you're going to

  2121. wake up one day

2122. and say you know what

  2123. I didn't really want this

2124. but I guess this is

  2125. a choice I've made

2126. I'm asking you right now

  2127. to do inventory

  2128. in your life

  2129. and say

  2130. what about my choices

  2131. young

  2132. old

  2133. in between

  2134. what about my choices

  2135. right now

  2136. am I making choices

2137. that a year from now

  2138. I'll be glad I made

  2139. or am I making

  2140. some choices

  2141. a year from now

  2142. my whole family

  2143. could have blown apart

  2144. because of my stupidity

  2145. let's bow together

  2146. in prayer

  2147. father

2148. lead us and guide us

  2149. today

  2150. in this time

  2151. of invitation

  2152. time of reflection

  2153. more than anything

  2154. to think about

  2155. the choices

  2156. we're making

  2157. every one of us

  2158. young and old

  2159. in this room

  2160. if we're making

  2161. God honoring choices

  2162. lord I'm so grateful

  2163. for that

2164. and I know many are

2165. but there's some of us

  2166. who are being careless

  2167. and reckless

  2168. in our decision making

  2169. and I pray God

2170. that you bear to mind

  2171. today

  2172. give us a warning

  2173. signal today

  2174. awaken us

  2175. from a stupor

  2176. that would allow us

  2177. to see

  2178. you know what

  2179. I'm headed down

  2180. a road that leads

  2181. to disaster

  2182. and teach us

  2183. Lord

  2184. it's never too late

  2185. never too late

2186. to do the right thing

  2187. we ask this

  2188. in your name

  2189. for your sake

  2190. amen
