  1. If you have your Bibles, I'd ask you, if you will, turn with me this morning to Mark chapter 6,

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  2. Mark chapter 6, verses 45 through 56.

    Mark 6:45–56

  3. Mark chapter 6, verses 45 through 56, and the title of my sermon this morning is

    Mark 6:45–56

  4. When Faith Fails, God Doesn't.

  5. Back in December of 1995, I graduated from Southern Seminary

  6. and I received my first church calling in Lornburg, North Carolina.

  7. I was asked or called to go to Stewardsville Baptist Church in Lornburg.

  8. And so after Christmas, Michelle and I loaded up a U-Haul

  9. and we drove 12 hours with an ice storm chasing us the whole way

  10. and we arrived in Lornburg, North Carolina with great excitement, great anticipation.

  11. You know, we knew God was going to do great and mighty things.

  12. After eight years of school, that's how long it took me to get through college and seminaries,

  13. eight years, and I was excited to be in my first church and see what God was going to do.

  14. But little did I know, I walked right into the middle of a church fight.

  15. No one warned me, no one told me, but I walked right into the middle of a big church fight

  16. where the church was getting ready to split.

  17. This church ran about 400 and they had called their first minister of music and youth,

  18. a combination position.

  19. And the church was split between the musicians.

  20. They loved him, the minister of music and youth.

  21. They loved him because he had taken their music to a whole new level.

  22. The youth side were against him.

  23. He was doing things differently than they had ever done before.

  24. Instead of going to like centrifuge, he wanted them to go look up lodge.

  25. And so the older youth told the younger youth that if you support him and get behind him,

  26. then you're a traitor to the youth group.

  27. And the parents got behind the youth and planned the trip to the centrifuge against the minister

  28. of youth's wishes.

  29. And so over the next couple of months, I found myself meeting with the deacons

  30. almost every night of the week up till midnight some nights discussing what were we going to do?

  31. How were we going to solve this problem?

  32. How were we going to keep the church from splitting and deal with the minister of music and youth?

  33. And I was a bit disillusioned as to what ministry really was.

  34. Coming out of seminary, having great expectations and great anticipation

  35. and walking right into the middle of that was a little bit disillusioned.

  36. But as I look back, I realized that I learned lessons and things throughout my life

  37. that are during that moment that have served me throughout ministry.

  38. And God was working in that to resolve that situation to where, to my knowledge,

  39. only one individual temporarily left the church.

  40. And God continued to use that church and do some great and mighty things.

  41. Have you ever been in a situation like that?

  42. Not quite being called to a church, but a situation or a circumstance

  43. where because you were being obedient to the Lord and following the Lord,

  44. you found yourself in situations or circumstances that were challenging,

  45. that were difficult, that were hard.

  46. You know, maybe it was a work-related situation.

  47. Maybe it was a health situation you found yourself in.

  48. And you wondered, why is God allowing me to go through this?

  49. Why is God not stepping in and solving this problem immediately

  50. and helping me in this situation?

  51. Why is He allowing me to go through this much longer than I ever anticipated?

  52. Well, the disciples found themselves in a situation very much like this.

  53. And they found themselves in this situation because they had obeyed Jesus

  54. to do exactly what He had told them to do.

  55. So let's look with us, or with me this morning,

  56. at Mark chapter 6, and we're going to read verses 45 through 56.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  57. Immediately, Jesus made His disciples get into the boat

  58. and go on ahead of Him to Bethsaida while He dismissed the crowd.

  59. After leaving them, He went up on a mountainside to pray.

  60. When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake,

  61. and He was alone on land.

  62. He saw the disciples straining at the oars because the wind was against them.

  63. About the fourth watch of the night, He went out to them,

  64. walking on the lake.

  65. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw Him walking on the lake,

  66. they thought He was a ghost, and they cried out

  67. because they all saw Him and were terrified.

  68. Immediately He spoke to them and said,

  69. Take courage, it is I.

  70. Don't be afraid.

  71. Then He climbed into the boat with them,

  72. and the wind died down.

  73. They were completely amazed,

  74. for they had not understood about the loaves.

  75. Their hearts were hardened.

  76. He had just fed the 5,000.

  77. That's what that's referring to.

  78. When they had crossed over,

  79. they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.

  80. As soon as they got out of the boat,

  81. people recognized Jesus.

  82. They ran throughout the whole region

  83. and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was.

  84. And wherever He went,

  85. into villages, towns, or countryside,

  86. they placed the sick in the marketplaces.

  87. They begged Him to let them touch even the edge of His cloak,

  88. and all who touched Him were healed.

  89. Let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  90. Father, we just thank You for Your Word.

  91. We thank You for Your truth.

  92. And we thank You for the lessons that we can learn

  93. throughout Your Scripture.

  94. And I pray that You just speak to each of our hearts here today

  95. and just speak to us.

  96. And we thank You, Lord, for this.

  97. We praise You always.

  98. In Jesus' name, amen.

  99. Upon reading this passage,

  100. have you ever asked yourself the question,

  101. did Jesus know this storm was about to occur?

  102. You see, the Sea of Galilee was surrounded by hills and mountains.

  103. And from what I've read,

  104. storms could come down off those mountains

  105. and hit the Sea of Galilee,

  106. and they could be the strength of a hurricane.

  107. We don't think of hurricanes in seas,

  108. but the Sea of Galilee is pretty large,

  109. and they could have had a hurricane-force storm go across it.

  110. Well, did Jesus know that this storm was coming?

  111. Well, if you believe in the sovereignty of God

  112. and Jesus being fully man and fully God,

  113. then we have to conclude that, yes,

  114. He knew that storm was coming.

  115. So that leads us to another question.

  116. Why, then, would Jesus send them out onto the Sea of Galilee

  117. if He knew this storm was coming?

  118. Why would He send them out in a little boat,

  119. out onto a sea,

  120. with a hurricane-force storm about to occur?

  121. Well, Mark doesn't really give us any kind of indication here

  122. as to why that happened or why Jesus was eager to do that,

  123. but John does.

  124. John gives us some insight in John chapter 6, verse 15,

    John 6:15

  125. and you can see it on the screen.

  126. This is the NIV version.

  127. Jesus, knowing that they intended to come

  128. and make Him king by force,

  129. withdrew again to a mountain by Himself.

  130. You see that?

  131. The crowds did not fully understand at this moment in time

  132. the type of Messiah that Jesus had come to be.

  133. They had a very wrong understanding.

  134. They had, as Jews,

  135. they had a very high messianic expectancy

  136. that God was going to send the Messiah,

  137. but what their thoughts were

  138. is that He was going to come in military might and power

  139. and He was going to conquer the Romans

  140. and give Israel their independence once again.

  141. But you and I know today that that is not the type of Messiah

  142. that Jesus came to be.

  143. But that is the crowd.

  144. And after they saw Him feed the 5,000

  145. and had worked several miracles of healing,

  146. they were about to come and take Jesus

  147. and make Him king by force.

  148. And Jesus knew that the disciples would be safer

  149. in a boat out on the Sea of Galilee

  150. in the midst of the storm where He could care for them.

  151. They were safer in that situation

  152. than they would be in the midst of this crowd

  153. having a very wrong understanding

  154. of who He had come to be.

  155. You have to remember,

  156. the disciples were the same men

  157. who had argued who was the greatest

  158. in the kingdom of God.

  159. And they were very slow to understand.

  160. I don't think they really came to that understanding

  161. until after Jesus had been resurrected

  162. that they really began to understand

  163. and put things together.

  164. Even though Jesus had told them numerous times

  165. throughout His ministry

  166. that He was coming to die,

  167. they still didn't get it.

  168. And so Jesus knew that they were safer

  169. in that boat out in the Sea of Galilee

  170. with a hurricane-force storm coming

  171. than they were in a crowd of people

  172. with the wrong understanding of who He was

  173. and getting ready to come

  174. and take them by force.

  175. Now, what's also interesting in this passage

  176. is that Jesus had spent a lot of time

  177. with the people, long day,

  178. and He was tired.

  179. He was human.

  180. He was tired and He was weary.

  181. It could have been easy for Him

  182. to have slipped away by Himself

  183. and gone to sleep.

  184. But Scripture doesn't tell us that, does it?

  185. What did He do?

  186. He prayed.

  187. He went up into the mountains,

  188. which I got ahead of myself a little bit.

  189. He put the disciples in the boat,

  190. sent them away,

  191. and then dismissed the crowd.

  192. That really shows us

  193. how eager Jesus was

  194. to separate them from one another

  195. because normally,

  196. He would have dismissed the crowd

  197. and then put the disciples in the boat.

  198. But He dismissed the disciples first.

  199. And then once the people had gone,

  200. He went up into the mountain to pray

  201. and He spent all night.

  202. If we read through the Gospels,

  203. we see this frequently

  204. where Jesus spends time alone

  205. with the Father in prayer.

  206. And if Jesus is fully God

  207. and fully man all at once,

  208. and yet the necessity for Him

  209. to spend the entire night in prayer,

  210. that should say something to us today.

  211. That should say something

  212. to the necessity

  213. that we have as children of God

  214. to be devoted

  215. to a very committed prayer life.

  216. Not a quick passing prayer

  217. or not a prayer that just gives God

  218. a laundry list of things

  219. that we want Him to do for us,

  220. but to be devoted

  221. to a powerful prayer life.

  222. By the way,

  223. on Wednesday nights

  224. during prayer meeting,

  225. we're doing a study

  226. by Dr. Greg Frizzell

  227. on how to have

  228. a powerful prayer life.

  229. It's one of the best books

  230. that I've studied

  231. on how to develop

  232. your prayer life.

  233. We would love for you

  234. to come out

  235. and be a part of that.

  236. We're going to be meeting

  237. in this room

  238. right beside the Welcome Center

  239. over the next few weeks

  240. because starting this week,

  241. they're going to be doing

  242. some work inside the sanctuary.

  243. We all know the work going on

  244. outside the sanctuary,

  245. but there's going to be

  246. some work also being done

  247. inside the sanctuary.

  248. And so prayer meeting,

  249. we're going to move

  250. into that classroom

  251. right there by the Welcome Center.

  252. It's room 250.

  253. And so we would love for you

  254. to come and to be a part of that

  255. because I'm firmly convinced

  256. the strength of the church

  257. is the strength

  258. of the individual's prayer lives.

  259. A church will be no stronger

  260. than the prayer lives

  261. of its members.

  262. Prayer is a gift

  263. that God has given to us

  264. that we can enter

  265. into His presence

  266. and we can spend time

  267. alone with Him.

  268. We can grow in our walk with Him

  269. and our intimacy with Him

  270. and our relationship with Him.

  271. He speaks to us

  272. and reveals Himself to us

  273. through our prayer lives

  274. as we study His Word

  275. as a part of that.

  276. And so I think prayer

  277. is vitally important

  278. to each individual

  279. and Jesus models that

  280. and shows that to us as well.

  281. Now as we study this text today,

  282. our primary focus

  283. is going to be upon

  284. the disciples

  285. and the storms

  286. they found themselves

  287. in the midst of.

  288. And by studying this experience

  289. that the disciples

  290. found themselves

  291. in the midst of,

  292. I think there are

  293. four truths here

  294. that we can glean from this

  295. and we can hold on to

  296. and serve as assurances

  297. in our own lives

  298. that when we face

  299. the storms of life.

  300. And so we're going to look

  301. at four assurances here

  302. because you know

  303. what they say,

  304. we all are either

  305. coming out of a storm,

  306. we're getting ready

  307. or we're in a storm

  308. or we're getting ready

  309. to go into the storm.

  310. And we all know

  311. that we have faced

  312. challenges, difficulties

  313. and circumstances

  314. in our lives

  315. that are beyond

  316. our abilities to control.

  317. They're beyond

  318. sometimes our understanding.

  319. And sometimes we're there

  320. because we followed Christ

  321. and we question

  322. why is God

  323. allowing me

  324. to experience this?

  325. Why is God

  326. letting this happen

  327. in my life?

  328. Well, one of those

  329. first assurances

  330. that we want to

  331. glean from this

  332. is that He brought us here.

  333. Jesus brought us here.

  334. If we find ourselves

  335. in the midst of a storm today

  336. because we've been

  337. obedient to God,

  338. then we need to know

  339. that He's brought us here

  340. and He'll certainly

  341. care for us.

  342. The storm came about

  343. in the life of the disciples

  344. because they were

  345. in the will of God.

  346. Not like Jonah

  347. who found himself

  348. in a storm

  349. because of disobedience.

  350. And as we study Scripture,

  351. especially for the believer,

  352. we discover there are

  353. essentially two types

  354. of storms

  355. that we will experience

  356. in our lives.

  357. Storms of correction

  358. when God needs

  359. to discipline us

  360. and storms of perfection

  361. when God helps us to grow,

  362. when He helps mature

  363. our faith

  364. or He molds and shapes us.

  365. Jonah was in the storm

  366. because he disobeyed God.

  367. We all know the story.

  368. He was running

  369. in the opposite direction

  370. of where God

  371. had told him to go.

  372. And so God used a storm

  373. to correct him

  374. and to bring him back

  375. into His will.

  376. The disciples were in the storm

  377. because they obeyed Christ.

  378. And Jesus was using

  379. this storm

  380. to develop their faith

  381. and their trust

  382. and their dependence

  383. upon Him.

  384. He had tested them

  385. once before

  386. also in a boat.

  387. You remember?

  388. They were in the boat.

  389. Jesus was tired

  390. from a long day of ministry

  391. and He was asleep

  392. on the stern of the boat.

  393. And the disciples,

  394. who many of them

  395. were fishermen,

  396. they still,

  397. the storm was beyond

  398. their ability to control

  399. and they woke Jesus up

  400. saying,

  401. do you not care

  402. that we're about to perish?

  403. Well, Jesus had tested them

  404. in that moment

  405. when He was in the boat

  406. with them.

  407. But in the passage

  408. that we're looking at today,

  409. Jesus is growing their faith

  410. when He's not with them.

  411. He's wanting them

  412. to understand

  413. it doesn't matter

  414. whether He's in the boat,

  415. physically present with them,

  416. or He's far away

  417. and they can't see Him,

  418. they don't know He's around,

  419. He can care for them.

  420. He can take care of them.

  421. He's well in charge

  422. of their lives.

  423. You see, Jesus knew

  424. that He wasn't going to

  425. always be with them.

  426. After His resurrection,

  427. He was going to ascend

  428. back into heaven.

  429. And these would be the men

  430. who would have to

  431. take the gospel message

  432. to the world.

  433. that they would have

  434. to carry on the work

  435. and the ministry

  436. and the mission

  437. that Jesus began.

  438. And they had to trust Jesus

  439. even when it seemed

  440. that He wasn't there with them.

  441. They had to learn

  442. to trust Him

  443. because they would indeed

  444. face many storms

  445. in their lives

  446. as they acted out

  447. in obedience

  448. to do what Christ

  449. had called them to do.

  450. By the way,

  451. if you find yourself

  452. in a storm today

  453. because you've disobeyed God

  454. or because you've wandered

  455. from the faith,

  456. there's only one response

  457. that you can make

  458. and that is to confess

  459. your sin to Christ,

  460. ask for forgiveness,

  461. and then repent

  462. and turn back to Him.

  463. And 1 John 1.9 tells us

  464. it doesn't matter

  465. what you've done.

  466. It doesn't matter

  467. how far you've wandered.

  468. It doesn't matter

  469. if you think God's mad at you

  470. because He's not,

  471. that He will forgive us.

  472. That if you confess your sin,

  473. He is faithful and just

  474. and will forgive us our sins

  475. and purify us

  476. from all unrighteousness.

  477. So no matter

  478. how far you've wandered,

  479. no matter how many mistakes

  480. you've made,

  481. Christ is waiting

  482. for you to come back.

  483. Now He may use storms

  484. to get your attention.

  485. He may use circumstances

  486. and situations

  487. because if we're a child of God

  488. and we've wandered from Him

  489. or we're disobedient to Him,

  490. He will discipline us.

  491. The Word of God tells us that

  492. and sometimes it's the beginning

  493. of a still small voice

  494. of the Holy Spirit

  495. speaking to our heart

  496. and if we don't listen,

  497. He turns the heat up

  498. a little bit

  499. and if we still don't listen,

  500. we may find ourselves

  501. in the belly of a fish,

  502. you know,

  503. to try to get us back to Him

  504. because God loves us

  505. and He wants us

  506. in a committed relationship

  507. with Him

  508. and He knows

  509. what is best for our lives

  510. and so He's going to do

  511. what He needs to do

  512. to bring us back to Him.

  513. Now,

  514. if you're sitting here today

  515. and you're not a believer,

  516. you're not a child of God,

  517. I also want you to know

  518. that Jesus loves you.

  519. He loves you

  520. and He's ready

  521. and He's willing

  522. to forgive you of your sin

  523. no matter what you've done,

  524. no matter how far you've gone,

  525. Jesus is ready

  526. and willing to forgive you.

  527. All you need to do

  528. is take that step to Jesus

  529. to ask Him to be

  530. your Lord and Savior,

  531. admit that you're a sinner

  532. and that you need forgiveness

  533. of your sin

  534. and again,

  535. 1 John 1, 9 tells us

  536. that He'll be quick

  537. to forgive you,

  538. to cleanse you

  539. and purify you

  540. with the blood

  541. that He shed on Calvary

  542. and adopt you

  543. into the family of God

  544. and later in the service

  545. when we do a time

  546. of invitation,

  547. if you do not know

  548. Jesus Christ

  549. as your Lord and Savior,

  550. I would encourage you

  551. to respond

  552. during the invitation

  553. and just simply

  554. come and pray with me

  555. or have me pray with you

  556. and have you ask

  557. Jesus Christ

  558. to be your Lord and Savior.

  559. The second truth

  560. that we can glean

  561. from this passage

  562. that will be an assurance

  563. that we can hang on to

  564. and hold on to

  565. when we face

  566. the storms of life

  567. is that He is praying

  568. for us.

  569. Now there's many places

  570. in Scripture

  571. such as John 17

  572. and others

  573. where we know

  574. that Jesus is praying

  575. for us

  576. but I want to read

  577. out of Romans 8, 34.

  578. Who then is the one

  579. who condemns?

  580. No one.

  581. Christ Jesus who died

  582. more than that

  583. who was raised to life

  584. is at the right hand

  585. of God

  586. and is also

  587. interceding for us.

  588. Now I want to stop

  589. and just kind of

  590. really pick these two verses

  591. verses 47 and 48

  592. apart here

  593. because I find them

  594. extremely interesting.

  595. When evening came

  596. the boat

  597. was in the middle

  598. of the lake

  599. and He was alone

  600. on land.

  601. Now pay attention here

  602. to what time of day

  603. it was

  604. when Jesus

  605. was alone.

  606. It says He was

  607. in evening.

  608. Now I'm not 100% sure

  609. if that's the same

  610. as our evening

  611. but it would have been

  612. you know

  613. late in the day

  614. probably

  615. before sunset

  616. that Jesus

  617. was alone

  618. and then

  619. look at verse 48

  620. He said

  621. He saw the disciples

  622. straining on the oars.

  623. So about evening time

  624. Jesus is up

  625. in the mountains

  626. alone praying.

  627. the disciples

  628. are probably

  629. miles away

  630. out in the middle

  631. of the Sea of Galilee

  632. it's getting dark

  633. and yet it said

  634. Jesus saw them.

  635. Now that would certainly

  636. be the God side

  637. of Jesus

  638. that He saw them

  639. He knew their situation

  640. He knew their circumstances

  641. and He knew

  642. what they

  643. were up against.

  644. Do you know

  645. Jesus

  646. knows you too

  647. and He sees you?

  648. Do you know

  649. that Jesus

  650. knows you

  651. intimately

  652. and everything

  653. about you?

  654. He knows

  655. the circumstances

  656. the conditions

  657. everything going on

  658. in your life

  659. He knows

  660. the things you fear

  661. that you worry about

  662. you struggle with

  663. the challenges

  664. that you face

  665. He knows

  666. you very intimately

  667. and in detail.

  668. Does that make

  669. a difference

  670. to you

  671. of how you face

  672. situations

  673. and circumstances

  674. of life

  675. that you know

  676. that Jesus

  677. is not

  678. some God

  679. that's off

  680. in a far distance

  681. unconcerned

  682. and unaware

  683. of what you're

  684. going through

  685. but He sees you

  686. and He knows you

  687. and He loves you

  688. and He is praying

  689. and making intercession

  690. for you.

  691. Let me ask you

  692. a question this morning.

  693. If you knew

  694. Jesus Christ

  695. was here

  696. in this room

  697. today

  698. let's say

  699. He was sitting

  700. in that chair

  701. and He was

  702. praying for you

  703. by name

  704. to the Father

  705. how would that

  706. affect you?

  707. If you knew

  708. Jesus knew

  709. your situation

  710. the challenges

  711. you're up against

  712. the storms

  713. that you're facing

  714. maybe your fears

  715. your worries

  716. your struggles

  717. and you knew

  718. He was sitting

  719. here

  720. let's say

  721. He came

  722. to the altar

  723. and He kneeled

  724. down at the altar

  725. and He was

  726. praying for you

  727. by name

  728. would that

  729. change the way

  730. you face

  731. those struggles

  732. of life

  733. that you're up

  734. against?

  735. Would that

  736. give you hope?

  737. Would that

  738. give you

  739. encouragement?

  740. Would that

  741. give you strength

  742. to keep going

  743. on and facing

  744. the things

  745. that you're

  746. up against?

  747. Well

  748. Jesus is not

  749. only here

  750. in this place

  751. with us

  752. today

  753. but Romans

  754. tells us

  755. He's seated

  756. at the right

  757. hand of the

  758. Father

  759. and He's

  760. interceding

  761. for you

  762. He's praying

  763. for you

  764. by name

  765. He sees you

  766. He knows you

  767. and He knows

  768. the circumstances

  769. He knows

  770. the challenges

  771. He knows

  772. everything about

  773. you

  774. He knows

  775. your doubts

  776. your struggles

  777. with faith

  778. He knows

  779. all about it

  780. and He's

  781. making intercession

  782. for you

  783. praying for you

  784. by name

  785. I hope that

  786. would make a

  787. difference

  788. in your life

  789. and the way

  790. you face

  791. those storms

  792. of life

  793. but also

  794. I hope it

  795. would challenge

  796. us to

  797. have a deeper

  798. love for Christ

  799. to know

  800. that He's not

  801. some distant

  802. God

  803. but He's a

  804. God that

  805. intimately

  806. loves us

  807. now the third

  808. thing we want

  809. to gain from

  810. this passage

  811. today

  812. too is that

  813. He will come

  814. to us

  815. He will come

  816. to us

  817. in verse 48

  818. we see the phrase

  819. He was about

  820. to pass them

  821. by

  822. now that doesn't

  823. mean that

  824. Jesus decided

  825. to walk across

  826. the Sea of Galilee

  827. and go on ahead

  828. and He was like

  829. y'all just get there

  830. the best way

  831. you know how

  832. that's not what

  833. that meant

  834. that same phrase

  835. is used in the

  836. Old Testament

  837. when God

  838. revealed Himself

  839. to Moses

  840. remember He

  841. hit him in the

  842. cleft of a rock

  843. and He walked

  844. God passed by

  845. and He revealed

  846. Himself to Moses

  847. so the same

  848. phrase

  849. same expression

  850. tells us

  851. that Jesus

  852. walking by

  853. should have been

  854. a revelation

  855. to the disciples

  856. that He was

  857. there with them

  858. He was in

  859. their presence

  860. He was there

  861. and it should

  862. have given

  863. them hope

  864. it should have

  865. given them

  866. courage

  867. and strength

  868. to know

  869. that once before

  870. Jesus has already

  871. calmed the storm

  872. when He was in

  873. the boat with us

  874. and we know

  875. that He cares

  876. about us

  877. and He can

  878. calm this storm

  879. with a spoken word

  880. and He's not

  881. going to allow

  882. anything

  883. to take place

  884. or happen

  885. in our life

  886. that's out

  887. of His will

  888. have you ever

  889. felt like

  890. where is God

  891. why doesn't He

  892. answer my prayers

  893. why doesn't He

  894. respond

  895. to me

  896. you know

  897. why is He

  898. allowing

  899. this

  900. to happen

  901. you know

  902. even in the Psalms

  903. King David

  904. had those feelings

  905. he felt like

  906. God was distant

  907. and not responding

  908. to Him

  909. and wondered

  910. where He was

  911. but ultimately

  912. David knew

  913. that you couldn't

  914. trust your feelings

  915. you can't trust

  916. how we feel

  917. but rather

  918. the Word of God

  919. tells us

  920. that God says

  921. I will never

  922. leave you

  923. nor forsake you

  924. David knew

  925. that God

  926. was with him

  927. despite

  928. how he felt

  929. sometimes

  930. God allows us

  931. to go through

  932. these circumstances

  933. and these situations

  934. to grow us

  935. and to help us

  936. to develop

  937. a trust

  938. and a faith

  939. in Him

  940. even when we

  941. think

  942. He's

  943. not there

  944. and I also

  945. want to point out

  946. here

  947. something else

  948. when I talked

  949. about evening

  950. it said

  951. Jesus didn't

  952. go to them

  953. until the fourth

  954. watch

  955. some of you

  956. Bible scholars

  957. what's the fourth

  958. watch

  959. that's between

  960. three and six

  961. o'clock in the

  962. morning

  963. between three

  964. and six o'clock

  965. in the morning

  966. so Jesus saw

  967. them

  968. in the evening

  969. struggling

  970. against the waves

  971. and the wind

  972. and the storm

  973. a storm

  974. hurricane force

  975. that was beyond

  976. these rugged

  977. fishermen

  978. to handle

  979. and control

  980. and yet

  981. He waited

  982. until the fourth

  983. watch

  984. wonder why

  985. He did that

  986. why did Jesus

  987. not rush

  988. out there

  989. immediately

  990. and rescue

  991. them

  992. why didn't

  993. Jesus speak

  994. a word

  995. to calm

  996. the storm

  997. my wife told

  998. me I should

  999. leave it

  1000. there and go

  1001. to find out

  1002. the rest

  1003. of the story

  1004. you have to

  1005. come back

  1006. next week

  1007. but I don't

  1008. know that I'm

  1009. going to be

  1010. preaching next

  1011. week so I'll

  1012. have to go

  1013. on and tell

  1014. you

  1015. sometimes God

  1016. uses situation

  1017. and circumstances

  1018. to teach us

  1019. life lessons

  1020. and I believe

  1021. that Jesus

  1022. allowed those

  1023. fishermen

  1024. these disciples

  1025. to get to

  1026. the end

  1027. of themselves

  1028. to reach

  1029. that point

  1030. where they

  1031. had no hope

  1032. they could

  1033. not save

  1034. themselves

  1035. they could

  1036. not

  1037. overpower

  1038. the wind

  1039. and the

  1040. waves

  1041. and get

  1042. that boat

  1043. to shore

  1044. where they

  1045. were safe

  1046. and he

  1047. allowed them

  1048. to get to

  1049. that point

  1050. where they

  1051. realized

  1052. their only

  1053. hope

  1054. was Jesus

  1055. Christ

  1056. you know

  1057. he took

  1058. out every

  1059. human prop

  1060. out

  1061. from under

  1062. them

  1063. to where

  1064. they had

  1065. to depend

  1066. on Christ

  1067. has Jesus

  1068. ever done

  1069. that to us

  1070. he ever

  1071. done it

  1072. to you

  1073. he allowed

  1074. you to

  1075. stay

  1076. in a

  1077. situation

  1078. and a

  1079. circumstance

  1080. longer than

  1081. you ever

  1082. thought

  1083. because what's

  1084. our response

  1085. how do we

  1086. handle

  1087. situations

  1088. in life

  1089. don't we

  1090. try to

  1091. handle it

  1092. on our

  1093. own

  1094. men

  1095. we're really

  1096. bad at

  1097. that

  1098. we try

  1099. to

  1100. we can

  1101. handle

  1102. these

  1103. situations

  1104. on our

  1105. own

  1106. or

  1107. in America

  1108. we've got

  1109. a lot

  1110. of props

  1111. don't we

  1112. whether it

  1113. be our

  1114. medical system

  1115. or insurance

  1116. or you

  1117. know

  1118. one thing

  1119. or another

  1120. credit cards

  1121. we've got

  1122. all these

  1123. props

  1124. propping

  1125. us up

  1126. where we

  1127. try to

  1128. handle

  1129. situations

  1130. and circumstances

  1131. in our

  1132. lives

  1133. and the

  1134. last

  1135. place we

  1136. turn

  1137. is Jesus

  1138. and so

  1139. sometimes

  1140. Jesus

  1141. puts us

  1142. in circumstances

  1143. where we

  1144. can't handle

  1145. all of our

  1146. man-made

  1147. props

  1148. are ineffective

  1149. and our

  1150. only hope

  1151. is Jesus

  1152. Christ

  1153. and he

  1154. leaves us

  1155. in that

  1156. situation

  1157. and that

  1158. circumstance

  1159. until we

  1160. come to

  1161. that conclusion

  1162. and we

  1163. turn to

  1164. him

  1165. completely

  1166. solely

  1167. relying

  1168. on him

  1169. to

  1170. step

  1171. into

  1172. that

  1173. situation

  1174. and if

  1175. he

  1176. leaves

  1177. us

  1178. there

  1179. for a

  1180. little

  1181. while

  1182. longer

  1183. it's

  1184. okay

  1185. because

  1186. we

  1187. trust

  1188. him

  1189. we

  1190. know

  1191. that

  1192. he

  1193. is

  1194. working

  1195. there

  1196. he's

  1197. caring

  1198. for us

  1199. he's

  1200. taking

  1201. care

  1202. of us

  1203. and he's

  1204. teaching

  1205. us

  1206. lessons

  1207. that we

  1208. need

  1209. to know

  1210. to grow

  1211. in our

  1212. walk

  1213. and our

  1214. faith

  1215. with him

  1216. which

  1217. brings

  1218. us

  1219. to

  1220. our

  1221. last

  1222. point

  1223. he

  1224. will

  1225. help

  1226. us

  1227. to

  1228. grow

  1229. you

  1230. know

  1231. I

  1232. believe

  1233. that this

  1234. was the

  1235. whole

  1236. purpose

  1237. of Jesus

  1238. and the

  1239. false

  1240. understanding

  1241. of who

  1242. he was

  1243. but it

  1244. was also

  1245. sending him

  1246. out or

  1247. sending the

  1248. disciples out

  1249. onto the

  1250. sea to

  1251. help them

  1252. to grow

  1253. in their

  1254. faith

  1255. and their

  1256. trust

  1257. in him

  1258. because as I

  1259. said earlier

  1260. shortly

  1261. Jesus was

  1262. going to be

  1263. gone

  1264. and these

  1265. men were

  1266. going to

  1267. have to

  1268. trust

  1269. Jesus was

  1270. with them

  1271. even though

  1272. he wasn't

  1273. physically

  1274. in their

  1275. presence

  1276. and there

  1277. may be

  1278. times when

  1279. they didn't

  1280. feel him

  1281. or they

  1282. didn't

  1283. sense

  1284. his

  1285. presence

  1286. but they

  1287. had to

  1288. trust

  1289. that he

  1290. saw

  1291. them

  1292. he knew

  1293. their

  1294. situation

  1295. he knew

  1296. their

  1297. circumstances

  1298. and he

  1299. would care

  1300. for them

  1301. and he

  1302. was helping

  1303. their

  1304. faith

  1305. to grow

  1306. deeper

  1307. and stronger

  1308. in the

  1309. midst

  1310. of all

  1311. of that

  1312. you know

  1313. it's not

  1314. easy to

  1315. face storms

  1316. of life

  1317. is it

  1318. and we

  1319. would never

  1320. want to

  1321. face many

  1322. of the

  1323. storms

  1324. we've

  1325. already

  1326. faced

  1327. in life

  1328. but how

  1329. many of

  1330. you have

  1331. faced

  1332. storms

  1333. in your

  1334. life

  1335. that when

  1336. you look

  1337. back

  1338. you realize

  1339. I was never

  1340. closer to

  1341. God

  1342. than when I

  1343. was in the

  1344. midst of that

  1345. storm

  1346. and there

  1347. are so many

  1348. lessons that I

  1349. learned

  1350. that helped me

  1351. grow in my

  1352. faith

  1353. and my walk

  1354. with the

  1355. Lord that I

  1356. never would

  1357. have learned

  1358. any other

  1359. way

  1360. now if given

  1361. a choice

  1362. we'd never

  1363. walk through

  1364. that again

  1365. we'd never

  1366. want to

  1367. but God

  1368. loves us

  1369. so much

  1370. and his

  1371. ultimate

  1372. purpose

  1373. is to

  1374. mold and

  1375. shape us

  1376. as Christians

  1377. is to

  1378. mold and

  1379. shape us

  1380. into the

  1381. image of

  1382. Christ

  1383. and he's

  1384. willing to

  1385. put us

  1386. through some

  1387. storms of

  1388. life

  1389. he's willing

  1390. to hold our

  1391. feet to the

  1392. fire if that's

  1393. what it takes

  1394. to help us

  1395. turn loose

  1396. of control

  1397. and give

  1398. our lives

  1399. fully and

  1400. freely to

  1401. him and

  1402. trust him

  1403. to shape

  1404. us and

  1405. mold us

  1406. and help

  1407. us to be

  1408. the men

  1409. and women

  1410. of faith

  1411. that he

  1412. wants us

  1413. to be

  1414. let me ask

  1415. you this

  1416. morning

  1417. do you

  1418. really trust

  1419. God with

  1420. your life

  1421. do you

  1422. trust him

  1423. in all

  1424. situations

  1425. and all

  1426. circumstances

  1427. of life

  1428. even when

  1429. it's

  1430. challenging

  1431. even when

  1432. it's

  1433. difficult

  1434. even when

  1435. it's

  1436. painful

  1437. even when

  1438. you don't

  1439. understand

  1440. what in

  1441. the world

  1442. is going

  1443. on

  1444. even when

  1445. you don't

  1446. sense

  1447. his presence

  1448. with you

  1449. do you

  1450. trust him

  1451. do you

  1452. trust him

  1453. enough

  1454. to just

  1455. say Lord

  1456. take my

  1457. life and

  1458. use me

  1459. as you

  1460. will

  1461. and may

  1462. your name

  1463. be glorified

  1464. in the

  1465. midst of

  1466. this

  1467. do you

  1468. trust God

  1469. enough

  1470. even if

  1471. his will

  1472. is for

  1473. you to

  1474. die

  1475. are you

  1476. willing to

  1477. say Lord

  1478. my life

  1479. is yours

  1480. use me

  1481. to bring

  1482. glory

  1483. and honor

  1484. to your

  1485. name

  1486. well I'm

  1487. going to

  1488. ask the

  1489. musicians to

  1490. come and

  1491. lead us in a

  1492. time of

  1493. invitation

  1494. and if the

  1495. Lord is

  1496. speaking to

  1497. you in

  1498. any way

  1499. this morning

  1500. I would

  1501. encourage you

  1502. to respond

  1503. I'd love

  1504. to pray

  1505. for you

  1506. pray with

  1507. you

  1508. and if

  1509. you do

  1510. not know

  1511. Jesus Christ

  1512. as your

  1513. Lord and

  1514. Savior

  1515. let me

  1516. encourage you

  1517. not to go

  1518. another day

  1519. without asking

  1520. Christ

  1521. you can do it

  1522. right there in

  1523. your seat

  1524. you can come

  1525. speak to me

  1526. or you can

  1527. speak to

  1528. another

  1529. believer

  1530. that you

  1531. trust

  1532. but don't

  1533. go another

  1534. day without

  1535. Christ being

  1536. your Lord

  1537. of your

  1538. life

  1539. you
