  1. Well, if you have your Bibles, look with me this morning to the book of James.

  2. I love the book of James. Hope you do.

  3. It's one of those practical books that teach us so much about how to live for the Lord Jesus.

  4. And we're going to look this morning at chapter 3, verses 1 to 12.

  5. So if you have your Bibles, go ahead and turn there.

  6. We're speaking this morning about choosing our words wisely.

  7. Choosing our words wisely.

  8. Most all of us would probably admit, some of you wouldn't have to,

  9. but a lot of us would admit that if we've had a struggle in life, it's been with our tongue, right?

  10. And I think a lot of times in the church when we talk about the tongue,

  11. we think so long as we avoid profanity, that we're in good shape.

  12. But that's certainly not the case.

  13. There are a lot of ways that you can hurt your testimony and hurt others by what you say.

  14. And so words are very, very important.

  15. I want to ask you to look with me at James chapter 3, verses 1 to 12.

    James 3:1–12

  16. And here's what we're going to do.

  17. And guys in the back, this is my fault, not yours, okay?

  18. But when we get to the slides, I'm going to change it a little bit.

  19. After we read the passage, I'm going to just make the comments as we go,

  20. and then we're going to skip those, I think it's four or five points there.

  21. We're going to go down to James 1.

  22. Look at that and then the concluding remarks.

  23. So if you can do that, good.

  24. And if you can't, that's on me.

  25. Don't worry about it.

  26. I'm not going to sweat it, okay?

  27. All right, James chapter 3 and verse 1.

    James 3 chapter mention

  28. Not many should become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive a stricter judgment.

  29. Now you've heard other admonitions in Scripture along that same line.

  30. Paul makes one in his letter to Timothy.

  31. And he warns folk about wanting to presume to be a teacher too quickly, right?

  32. And I think a lot of times when we read that, if you're not familiar with chapter 3,

  33. you think, well, what he's doing is he's saying that you're going to be held to a higher standard.

  34. Judgment's going to fall on you if you don't accurately teach the Word of God.

  35. And we're worried about missteps theologically and doctrinally, right?

  36. So you want to be well-versed in Scripture,

  37. and maybe you need to be careful about becoming someone who teaches others the Word of God.

  38. But that's not the approach that James is making.

  39. He gives us that warning, don't be too quick to teach.

  40. But he's got another reason altogether in mind.

  41. And he's the only one in Scripture that I can think of off the top of my head who makes this warning.

  42. His warning is not because of what they might say when they're standing before their class.

  43. His warning has to do with what they'll say when they're not in the presence of their class.

  44. In other words, how they talk to others outside the classroom, outside the church building, outside the pulpit,

  45. how they speak to their neighbor, how they speak to folk in business,

  46. especially, I think, how they speak to their family and how they speak to their friends

  47. and those with whom perhaps they have some kind of disagreement.

  48. So look at his next warning in verse 2.

  49. For we all stumble in many ways.

  50. And he's talking specifically about the tongue.

  51. And I think everybody here, if we're honest, would say at one time or another,

  52. we've stumbled in how we use our tongue.

  53. Let me just pause and say, when he talks about the tongue,

  54. he's not concerned about this 4 or 5, 6 inch long thing that we call our tongue,

  55. that piece of meat that hangs in our mouth, right?

  56. He's talking about our speech.

  57. It's not our literal tongue that gets us in trouble.

  58. That's a metaphor for how we speak, the things we say, right?

  59. So he says, for we all stumble in many ways.

  60. If anyone does not stumble in what he says,

  61. he is a mature man who is also able to control his whole body.

  62. I'm going to tell you, somebody who can control their tongue

  63. can control every other aspect of their life.

  64. They're not going to be prone most times to give in to sexual temptation.

  65. They're not going to be prone to allow their feet to take them places they shouldn't go.

  66. If you can control your tongue, I'm going to tell you something.

  67. You've gone a long way in life in becoming the person that God would have for you to become.

  68. And then he gives some illustrations that every one of us can identify with.

  69. Look at verse 3.

  70. Now, when we put bits in the mouths of horses to make them obey us,

  71. we also guide the whole animal.

  72. I don't know how many of you love horses, know about horses, ride horses.

  73. I'm not in that category.

  74. When I was in high school, my junior or senior year, I had a friend who lived on a farm.

  75. He had a horse, a couple of horses, and he would invite me out to his house.

  76. We'd bird hunt, and then we'd get on those horses, and we'd just ride some.

  77. But he's the one who knew all about the horses.

  78. He would saddle it, and he would put the bridle in the mouth.

  79. But I was amazed the first time I ever got on the back of that horse,

  80. when you had that bridle in that horse's mouth.

  81. This is a big old strong horse, much more powerful than the person on its back, right?

  82. No match in strength at all.

  83. But you put that bit in the horse's mouth, and you pull those reins to the left,

  84. and he'll go to the left.

  85. You pull it to the right.

  86. He's going to go to the right.

  87. You pull him back, and he's going to stop.

  88. That bit controls that huge, huge beast.

  89. And he says that's as it ought to be,

  90. that rather than the beast control the man,

  91. the man controls the beast through the use of the bit.

  92. Look at verse 4.

  93. And consider ships, though very large and driven by fierce winds,

  94. they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot takes them or directs them.

  95. I don't know about you, when I think about the marvels of the universe,

  96. I marvel a lot of things that probably a lot of you don't.

  97. It still amazes me.

  98. You can pick up the phone and push some numbers,

  99. and somebody talks on the other end of the line, right?

  100. I know some of the science behind that, but it's still just a mystery to me.

  101. One of the real mysteries to me, though, has always been ships.

  102. To see a ship out there in the ocean.

  103. I mean, here's this ship that weighs thousands of tons, right?

  104. And it's loaded with cargo, and it's loaded with passengers.

  105. And I understand buoyancy.

  106. I understand how it floats.

  107. But it's hard to imagine to me that you can propel that ship exactly in the direction you want it to go.

  108. And even before there were motorized ships, when the wind pushed the ships, which is what James is talking about,

  109. he says, here's this huge ship.

  110. It's loaded down with cargo and with people.

  111. And the captain can stand there with one hand on the wheel, right?

  112. And he can turn it one way or turn it to another.

  113. And because it has a connection to the rudder, that little small rudder,

  114. which weighs absolutely nothing compared to the whole ship,

  115. he directs that ship either to the left or right or straight.

  116. He puts it exactly where it needs to go.

  117. Look at verse 5.

  118. So too, in the same way, in other words,

  119. though the tongue is a small part of the body,

  120. it boasts great things.

  121. In other words, one of the smallest parts of your body is your tongue, right?

  122. It's not nearly as consequential to look at as your eyes or your nose through which you breathe and your mouth

  123. or your ears that you hear with or your feet that carry you places

  124. or your arms that you're able to carry a load with.

  125. It doesn't look nearly as consequential to be.

  126. He says, boy, the tongue boasts great, great, great things.

  127. And that's true, isn't it?

  128. I want to ask you something.

  129. Listen, don't raise your hand about this.

  130. How many of you in the last 10 years have been in a fist bout with somebody?

  131. Don't raise your hand, okay?

  132. I hope nobody here.

  133. Probably nobody here.

  134. Maybe some child here, something like that, right?

  135. Maybe you just had a real bad day sometime, okay?

  136. But we don't get in trouble with our fist.

  137. We don't get in trouble over just the things we think very often.

  138. You know what gets us in trouble?

  139. One and all, it's our mouth, isn't it?

  140. I mean, you think about the troubles you've had most of the time in your life

  141. because of the things you've said.

  142. Either arguing with somebody or angry with somebody or belittling somebody

  143. or you put your foot in your mouth, you said the wrong thing at the wrong time,

  144. and sometimes unaware you do it.

  145. But our mouths are what get us in trouble more than anything else, isn't it?

  146. I mean, with the vast majority of people, that's true.

  147. He says, so though the tongue is a small part of the body, it boasts great things.

  148. Consider how large a forest of small fire ignites.

  149. My son, my dad, my brother, and I were going fishing in Washington State

  150. probably about 15 years ago.

  151. We booked a flight, and at the last minute we had to change

  152. because of forest fires throughout Montana.

  153. We had to change our course of action.

  154. It burned hundreds of thousands of acres.

  155. And that's the point he makes.

  156. You just start a little tiny fire, and it gets out of control,

  157. and it can destroy a whole hundred thousand acres or more.

  158. Verse 6, and the tongue is fire.

  159. He says, I want you to understand, you're dealing with a force to be reckoned with

  160. when you talk about a person's tongue.

  161. You hear the expression, the power of the press.

  162. They're talking about the power of words.

  163. Man, words are powerful.

  164. The tongue is a fire.

  165. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed among the parts of our body.

  166. And listen to what he says about it.

  167. Two or three things it does.

  168. It pollutes the whole body.

  169. You know what something is when it's polluted, right?

  170. It's contaminated.

  171. I mean, it's good one moment, but it's turned bad because it becomes polluted,

  172. and it's contaminated.

  173. He says the tongue contaminates the whole body.

  174. It sets the course of life on fire.

  175. Can any of you think of some folk, you hear about it now all the time,

  176. because of the woke movement.

  177. That's a lot of nonsense at times, but I want to tell you something.

  178. There are folks who have legitimately ruined their lives

  179. because they spoke things they should never have said.

  180. And again, I'm not talking about the modern-day woke movement.

  181. I'm talking about they legitimately destroyed their lives

  182. by saying things that should never have been said.

  183. Sometimes they breach a confidence.

  184. Sometimes they tell a lie.

  185. Sometimes they speak hatefully.

  186. Sometimes they speak cruelly.

  187. And they have ruined their lives as well as the lives of others.

  188. And so he says it sets the course of life on fire.

  189. Many people have ruined their lives because of how they use their tongue.

  190. There's a pastor whose name I could call today,

  191. and some of you in this crowd, probably not all of you,

  192. but some of you in this crowd, a number of you in this crowd,

  193. the staff certainly would, would recognize this name

  194. because he was considered about seven, eight years ago

  195. one of the leading pastors in America.

  196. Had one of the largest churches, one of these mega churches

  197. out on the West Coast.

  198. I mean, it just sprang up overnight,

  199. and it was growing by the thousands of folk were attending this guy's church.

  200. But you know what they discovered?

  201. They discovered he had a bad mouth.

  202. And I don't mean he just used profanity.

  203. He did that on occasion, even in the pulpit.

  204. But here's the other deal.

  205. He had a wicked temper.

  206. And what ultimately happened is he would turn on members of the congregation,

  207. turn on staff folk, turn on family,

  208. and he would say outrageous things until finally it cost him his church,

  209. cost him, I don't even know about his family,

  210. but it cost him his church,

  211. and the church ultimately collapsed around him.

  212. And so James is right.

  213. The tongue, a word of unrighteousness,

  214. is placed among the parts of our body.

  215. It pollutes the whole body, sets the course of life on fire,

  216. and is set on fire by hell.

  217. I'm telling you, you better be careful about what you say

  218. because it could be that you're being used of the devil in what you say

  219. when you're hurtful with your speech.

  220. Look at verse 7.

  221. Every sea creature, reptile, bird, or animal is tamed and has been tamed by man.

  222. Have you all ever been down to Sea World?

  223. Man, they'll get those fish, crazy people will,

  224. and they'll hold it out and let those killer whales come and eat out of their hand.

  225. Ralph's not going to do that.

  226. But there are folk who will do that,

  227. and it's because they have learned they can train those animals to do certain things.

  228. You ever seen those guys at the circus?

  229. They lay down on the ground.

  230. Or typically they have one of their workers lay down on the ground,

  231. and they had that elephant come,

  232. and the elephant will put his foot right over their stomach or their back,

  233. but he won't put his weight down on them.

  234. They trust that animal because they have trained that animal.

  235. They will fight with lions and tigers and that sort of thing.

  236. My granddaughter has a way with dogs.

  237. She's got a little Australian Shepherd, and she's training it right now,

  238. and it can throw up a ball, and it's just a puppy,

  239. and it can catch that ball in midair and do all kinds of things.

  240. When she was a little younger, my daughter, not her mother but her aunt,

  241. would invite us over, and we'd play games, the whole family.

  242. We'd be sitting in the dining room playing a game,

  243. and Scout would be in there with her dog, Roxy, a black lab,

  244. and she would teach her to do tricks.

  245. And she taught her how to sit and how to lay down and how to roll over to the left

  246. and roll over to the right and weave between her legs.

  247. She would tell her to sit and stay, and then she would take dog biscuits and put them on each paw.

  248. And you could tell that dog wanted those biscuits so bad.

  249. And she would walk into another room and tell her, say, leave them,

  250. and walk into another room and from the other room say, take them,

  251. and that dog would eat those dog biscuits.

  252. One day we're there at the house playing, and she is in the other room,

  253. and I can tell she's teaching her to do something.

  254. And so finally she comes into the dining room.

  255. She looks at me and says, Papa, watch this.

  256. She tells Roxy, Roxy, sit.

  257. Roxy, sit.

  258. Roxy, lay down.

  259. Roxy, lays down.

  260. She says, Roxy, and goes, bang.

  261. The dog rolls over and sticks her leg straight up in the air, right?

  262. And that's what James is saying.

  263. He says, man, you can take an animal, and you can teach reptiles.

  264. You can teach through giving them something to reinforce behavior.

  265. You can teach birds and animals and creatures, everything in the world.

  266. But good luck taming the tongue.

  267. Good luck getting control over the tongue.

  268. No man can tame the tongue, verse 8 says.

  269. It is a restless evil full of deadly poison.

  270. Strong word to use, isn't it?

  271. I mean, you ladies, you ever leave poison out on your cabinets for kids to get into?

  272. Of course not.

  273. You guys in your garage, you got chemicals you know would harm grandchildren?

  274. And you don't leave them within hand's reach, right?

  275. You put that stuff up because you don't want your children to be poisoned.

  276. But this is what he says.

  277. You need to be aware the tongue is a deadly poison.

  278. Man, it's a deadly, deadly poison.

  279. And then he says this, verse 9.

  280. We praise our Lord and Father with it,

  281. and we curse men who are made in God's likeness with it.

  282. Now, just a few moments ago, we sang songs about the goodness of God,

  283. and we were praising him.

  284. I commented on it in my prayer.

  285. I thought the song selection was great, Brian.

  286. We talk about praising God and how good God is,

  287. and we occasionally listen to a sermon.

  288. You ever been going down the road, you listen to a radio preacher,

  289. and he said amen as he's preaching?

  290. Well, praise the Lord.

  291. Man, that's right.

  292. You nailed it.

  293. That's good.

  294. He says, isn't it amazing?

  295. We praise the Lord with our tongues,

  296. and we can walk right out of a room of worship,

  297. get in our car.

  298. If we're not careful, we'll get into an argument with our spouse

  299. or get into a tiff with one of our kids,

  300. and we can say awful things, hurtful things, slanderous things.

  301. And then he draws this conclusion.

  302. Look at verse 10.

  303. Praising and cursing come out of the same mouth.

  304. Did everybody here agree with that?

  305. You ever seen that be the case?

  306. Just nod yes, right?

  307. And then listen to this conclusion he draws,

  308. because I'm going to tell you, it just breaks my heart.

  309. My brothers, these things should not be this way.

  310. Now, I want to tell you,

  311. we may agree or disagree on a lot of things theologically,

  312. a lot of things biblically.

  313. I don't think there's a person in this room

  314. who would take issue with what James just says.

  315. That out of the same mouth we praise God

  316. and then turn around 15, 20 minutes later

  317. and get into it with somebody

  318. and can just rip them to shreds

  319. and James' conclusion is this.

  320. That just should not be.

  321. I mean, that just is inexcusable.

  322. That's just something that should never take place

  323. that with this same tongue,

  324. I praise God and turn around

  325. and then belittle my wife or my children,

  326. my husband, folks I know, people I work with.

  327. Man, that just cannot be.

  328. That's just unthinkable in James' mind.

  329. And he tells us why it's unthinkable.

  330. Look at verse 11.

  331. Does a spring pour out sweet and bitter water

  332. from the same opening?

  333. Well, you know the answer to that.

  334. It's obviously no.

  335. It's a rhetorical question.

  336. No.

  337. It's just something that doesn't happen.

  338. We've gotten away from using water fountains

  339. during COVID, right?

  340. I look forward to when we can open those up again.

  341. But when you used to use a water fountain,

  342. you went up and you pushed that button

  343. and you bend over and take it.

  344. Have you ever gotten a sip of water?

  345. Boy, that was good.

  346. I think I'll get another sip.

  347. Ooh, that's bad.

  348. Well, that's good.

  349. Well, that's bad.

  350. No.

  351. If it's good to begin with,

  352. it's going to continue to be good.

  353. And if it's bad from the beginning,

  354. it doesn't get good.

  355. It's going to continue to be bad, right?

  356. And that's what James is saying.

  357. Verse 12.

  358. Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers,

  359. or a grapevine produce figs?

  360. We know the answer to that.

  361. The answer is no.

  362. I mean, fig trees produce figs

  363. and grapevines produce grapes.

  364. Olive trees produce olives.

  365. Neither can a saltwater spring yield fresh water.

  366. Again, I'm emphasizing that when James talks about the tongue,

  367. he's not talking about the literal tongue.

  368. He's talking about those things that we say.

  369. Words are powerful conveyors of thought.

  370. When I was a kid,

  371. the middle school teachers in that day

  372. used to tell us all the time

  373. they would do it to help some child

  374. who'd been beat up on a little bit by somebody verbally.

  375. They'd come up and put their arm around that child

  376. and they'd say something like this.

  377. Y'all have all heard it from my age.

  378. These youngsters probably hadn't heard it as much,

  379. but people my age used to hear this all the time.

  380. They'd put their arm around that person

  381. who had been assaulted verbally

  382. and they would try to encourage them

  383. and they would try to encourage them by saying this.

  384. You just remember.

  385. Remember what I'm going to say?

  386. Sticks and stones will break your bones,

  387. but names will never hurt you.

  388. I think they quit doing that.

  389. You know why?

  390. It's a lie.

  391. There's no truth in that.

  392. It may make that little boy or girl feel better in the moment,

  393. but it's just not true.

  394. Can I tell you,

  395. most injuries you suffer in life

  396. where you break an arm

  397. or you have to go to the ER and get sewed up

  398. or maybe you get in a fight as a kid

  399. and you get a black eye,

  400. it's going to heal in a couple days.

  401. I mean, it ain't no big deal, right?

  402. We all suffer those kind of hurts.

  403. But I'm going to tell you something.

  404. There are hurts that we suffer as individuals

  405. when people who we have confidence in look at us

  406. and say things to us that are hurtful

  407. and spiteful and demeaning.

  408. And I'm going to tell you,

  409. I've talked to people for 50 years in counseling

  410. and some of those wounds are as fresh today

  411. as they were the day it happened.

  412. I could tell you right now,

  413. and I'm not exaggerating,

  414. I could tell you illustration after illustration

  415. after illustration of people

  416. that I've dealt with in counseling

  417. who have told me about things

  418. that happened 30, 40 years ago in their life.

  419. And when they tell it,

  420. you would think if you didn't know better,

  421. this happened about two and a half, three hours ago.

  422. It's that fresh.

  423. They remember being told they were stupid.

  424. They remember being smacked across the mouth.

  425. They remember being told

  426. they never amount to anything.

  427. They remember being told how worthless they were.

  428. They remember being told how they never amount to anything.

  429. Those words are just indelibly etched in their mind.

  430. And somebody probably came along in most instances

  431. and said, hey, I'm sorry, I lost my cool.

  432. I said that and I shouldn't have.

  433. I didn't mean that.

  434. You convince that little mind that they didn't mean it.

  435. You convince that wife who's hurt and crying,

  436. you really didn't mean that.

  437. I'm telling you, words are powerful, powerful tools.

  438. With words, we can unite and we can divide, can't we?

  439. I was in a business meeting years ago.

  440. I was in Statesville, North Carolina

  441. when I pastored there

  442. in a pretty contentious business meeting.

  443. It wasn't anything super serious,

  444. but they're arguing, believe it or not,

  445. over a church bus.

  446. We're going to buy a church bus.

  447. Those days, to tell you how long ago,

  448. the whole thing wasn't but $28,000.

  449. They're going to buy this church bus.

  450. But the big argument was,

  451. do we buy it with a bathroom or without a bathroom?

  452. And half the people wanted a bathroom.

  453. The old ones thought we ought to have a bathroom.

  454. The younger ones thought, no, that'll smell.

  455. We don't need a bathroom in that bus.

  456. And so they're arguing back and forth.

  457. Well, this man in the church

  458. who's pretty influential stands up and he says,

  459. I just want you to know,

  460. if you'll buy a bus with a bathroom in it,

  461. I'll give $5,000 for that bus tonight.

  462. That was a big incentive.

  463. They took the vote.

  464. He thought they would maybe come to his side with that.

  465. And they didn't.

  466. They lost by about three or four votes.

  467. So you can just tell there was an uneasiness.

  468. And we'd always had good spirit in business,

  469. but there was an uneasiness.

  470. And you know what he did?

  471. He united those people.

  472. That same man stood back up and said,

  473. well, you know what?

  474. We just voted,

  475. and we voted not to get that bus with a bathroom,

  476. even though I wanted it.

  477. I want to be the first to get $5,000

  478. for a bus with no bathroom.

  479. And people began to laugh,

  480. and they came together,

  481. and there was unity.

  482. Can I tell you something?

  483. You've seen it,

  484. and I've seen it.

  485. You've seen a place that was divided,

  486. and somebody say exactly the right thing,

  487. and what happens?

  488. There are words that unite, right?

  489. It brings us together.

  490. But sadly,

  491. I've also seen at times in business meetings,

  492. somebody stand up and say something,

  493. and it wasn't because they opposed me

  494. or because they opposed some idea

  495. the deacons were bringing.

  496. It was because they had a divisive spirit.

  497. They just divided the room.

  498. And listen,

  499. it wasn't that they said what they said

  500. to make a point.

  501. It's that they said what they said.

  502. It was clear.

  503. They wanted to create division.

  504. Have you ever seen anybody use words in that way?

  505. They're trying to divide.

  506. They try to divide a home.

  507. They try to divide a team.

  508. They try to divide a church.

  509. They're speaking divisively.

  510. Words can divide.

  511. Words are powerful.

  512. They're powerful.

  513. We need to be careful

  514. about how we use our words.

  515. They can heal.

  516. They can wound.

  517. They can motivate.

  518. They can demoralize.

  519. They can anger.

  520. They can inspire.

  521. They can devastate,

  522. and they can encourage.

  523. I want to ask you

  524. how many of you have ever been

  525. devastated by somebody's words,

  526. but I'm going to tell you this.

  527. My guess is everybody in the room.

  528. My guess is at some time,

  529. somebody in your life

  530. is devastated.

  531. You hopefully just momentarily,

  532. but you know what it is

  533. to be just knocked off your feet,

  534. taken back by what somebody says,

  535. and it hurts,

  536. but I hope you also know

  537. what it is to be encouraged

  538. by somebody's words.

  539. Well, I can't tell you the times

  540. many of you in this room.

  541. In fact, when I talk about first pickings,

  542. I did someone this last week,

  543. when they say,

  544. well, what do you have to say

  545. about those folks?

  546. I say, I'll tell you this.

  547. They're the most encouraging people

  548. I've ever preached to.

  549. I've never had people

  550. be as complimentary

  551. about poor preaching

  552. in my life

  553. as they are here,

  554. but you know how to encourage,

  555. and you know what it is

  556. to encourage people, right?

  557. It's a good feeling

  558. when somebody comes

  559. and they just encourage you.

  560. Words can encourage you.

  561. So let me ask you,

  562. have your words ever hurt anybody?

  563. Are you guilty of doing that,

  564. hurting somebody with your words?

  565. Are you also guilty

  566. of helping somebody with your words,

  567. encouraging somebody?

  568. I bet you've done that

  569. to a waiter or a waitress before.

  570. You can just tell their dad

  571. and you just lift them up

  572. by what you say.

  573. Boy, it's a good thing, you know.

  574. Good feeling for not only

  575. the one being encouraged,

  576. but the one who's doing

  577. the encouraging

  578. to encourage other folks.

  579. Well, skip down with me now.

  580. Guys, if you can do that,

  581. look to James 1.19.

  582. And I want you to read

  583. this final verse with me,

  584. and then we're going to draw

  585. five quick conclusions.

  586. I want you to look to James 1.

  587. Go back a couple of chapters.

  588. This is one of my favorite verses

  589. in the Scripture.

  590. My dearly loved brothers,

  591. understand this.

  592. Everyone must be,

  593. now just look up

  594. and listen to me at this point,

  595. because I want you to get

  596. this graphic in your mind.

  597. Everyone must be

  598. quick to listen,

  599. slow to speak,

  600. and slow to anger.

  601. And this is how he drives

  602. the point home,

  603. because, the next verse,

  604. for the anger of man,

  605. are you ready for this?

  606. It never accomplishes

  607. the righteousness of God.

  608. When I first started preaching,

  609. 25 years of age,

  610. full-time out of seminary,

  611. I went to my first church,

  612. Western Avenue in Statesville.

  613. And boy, I had a little bit

  614. of a temper.

  615. And I actually thought,

  616. you know,

  617. it's a good thing,

  618. because I'm not going to

  619. let anybody run over me.

  620. I'm not going to let anybody

  621. abuse the church.

  622. And boy,

  623. if you get out of line

  624. or something,

  625. I'm going to be quick

  626. to tell you.

  627. I'm going to just,

  628. I'm going to tell you.

  629. And I was reading

  630. the Scripture one day,

  631. and God convicted me

  632. through this verse

  633. I just read to you.

  634. Be quick to listen.

  635. Most of us would do well

  636. to listen way,

  637. way,

  638. way,

  639. way,

  640. way more than we do.

  641. And slow to speak.

  642. You know who my heroes

  643. are in life?

  644. The people typically

  645. who say the least.

  646. When I think of the people

  647. in life who I most

  648. want to be like,

  649. it's typically people

  650. who say the least.

  651. And then he says,

  652. slow to anger.

  653. And this is why,

  654. because the anger of man,

  655. and he's either right

  656. or he's wrong in this,

  657. either God,

  658. when he inspired him,

  659. was right or he was wrong,

  660. it never accomplishes

  661. the righteousness of God.

  662. If you've got a temper

  663. and you're proud of it

  664. because you think,

  665. I just speak my mind,

  666. I just tell the truth,

  667. I'm just candid,

  668. really,

  669. you need to think

  670. of yourself in a different way

  671. that you're just cruel

  672. and don't have a filter.

  673. You understand?

  674. That you just speak

  675. too quickly.

  676. That you're arrogant.

  677. And we don't like

  678. to think of ourselves

  679. that way.

  680. But I'm going to tell you,

  681. the anger of man

  682. never, ever, ever,

  683. ever once accomplishes

  684. the righteousness of God.

  685. You don't need that.

  686. You don't need that.

  687. So what can we learn

  688. from the passage

  689. we've looked at today?

  690. Well, we can make a choice

  691. and that choice should be

  692. to use my tongue

  693. the way God intended

  694. for me to use my tongue.

  695. For me to honor God

  696. with my tongue.

  697. Now, I would guess

  698. that everybody in this room

  699. to this point would say,

  700. well, Pastor,

  701. I'm with you

  702. and I'm in agreement

  703. and I'd like to.

  704. So how do I do that?

  705. I'm going to tell you

  706. five things just real quickly.

  707. You can write these down

  708. if you want to.

  709. But here's five ways

  710. you can do that.

  711. Five practical,

  712. real ways you can do it.

  713. One, choose not to injure

  714. others with your words.

  715. Choose not to injure

  716. others with your words.

  717. Now, how am I going

  718. to go about doing that?

  719. First of all,

  720. when I'm angry,

  721. I'm going to speak

  722. with extreme caution.

  723. I'm going to speak

  724. with extreme caution

  725. whenever I find myself

  726. getting angry.

  727. So here's what that involves.

  728. I've got to know

  729. when I'm getting angry

  730. and a lot of us,

  731. I'm fearful, don't.

  732. Anger just kind of

  733. sneaks up on us, right?

  734. You've got to become aware

  735. of what you're feeling.

  736. And when you feel yourself

  737. getting mad,

  738. the best thing you can do

  739. is shut your mouth.

  740. And just say,

  741. I'm going to be

  742. extremely careful.

  743. I'm going to be on red alert

  744. like the military

  745. when it comes to

  746. using my tongue,

  747. employing my tongue

  748. because this is a

  749. vile weapon

  750. I have at my disposal.

  751. I'm going to be

  752. especially careful

  753. when I open my mouth

  754. whenever I'm angry

  755. because I don't want

  756. something to come out

  757. that will cause me harm

  758. or cause someone else harm.

  759. I choose

  760. not to injure others

  761. as I speak.

  762. Additionally,

  763. if I'm going to do that,

  764. I've got to avoid

  765. being critical

  766. as often as I possibly can

  767. because watch this

  768. and this makes common sense.

  769. The more critical I am,

  770. the more I am apt

  771. to hurt somebody

  772. with my words.

  773. Would you agree with that?

  774. The more often

  775. I am critical of others

  776. or some situation,

  777. the more apt I am

  778. to misspeak.

  779. So what I've got to learn

  780. to do is this.

  781. I've got to quit

  782. being critical as much.

  783. I used to tell my son

  784. when he was a little boy,

  785. you know son,

  786. it is possible

  787. to have a thought

  788. and not say it.

  789. We live in a world today

  790. where folks don't get that.

  791. You understand?

  792. They think they have

  793. a license somehow

  794. if they think it.

  795. I just got to tell people.

  796. They want to know

  797. what I think.

  798. Can I tell you something?

  799. They don't want to know

  800. what you think.

  801. Most people don't give

  802. a nickel what you think.

  803. Most people would rather

  804. you listen to what

  805. they think, right?

  806. And that's what

  807. gets us in trouble.

  808. We all have got

  809. these opinions

  810. but you've just got to

  811. learn to not commentate

  812. on everything that goes

  813. on in the world.

  814. Have you ever seen folk

  815. who it doesn't matter

  816. what happens,

  817. where it happens,

  818. if it's at school,

  819. if it's on the playground,

  820. if it's in church,

  821. if it's in business,

  822. if it's at the courthouse,

  823. something happens?

  824. Well, let me just tell you

  825. what I think about that.

  826. They've got to be

  827. a commentator for it.

  828. You know what I miss

  829. about the news

  830. when I was a kid?

  831. When I was a kid,

  832. you cut on the news

  833. for 30 minutes

  834. and you heard somebody say,

  835. and here's what happened

  836. in the world today,

  837. and they just mostly

  838. show you clips

  839. of what people were saying

  840. and they let you

  841. draw your own conclusion.

  842. Well, now they show you

  843. about a 15-second clip

  844. and they got seven guys

  845. there to tell you

  846. what they just said.

  847. Now, spend the next

  848. 30 minutes telling you

  849. what they just told you,

  850. right?

  851. And they got all

  852. these different opinions.

  853. And how many of you

  854. really appreciate

  855. all their opinions, right?

  856. I want to tell you something.

  857. In real life,

  858. that's how folks feel

  859. about mine and your opinion.

  860. I'm not saying

  861. it's about you,

  862. it's about me.

  863. They don't care

  864. what we think.

  865. So if you want to keep

  866. from hurting folks' feelings,

  867. don't feel like I've got

  868. to give everybody

  869. my opinion

  870. on what just happened.

  871. No, you don't.

  872. Keep it to yourself.

  873. Here's the second thing.

  874. Choose to use your tongue

  875. to build others up.

  876. This is the one I really do love.

  877. Choose to use your tongue

  878. to build others up.

  879. Make that commitment today.

  880. Say, God,

  881. from this day forward,

  882. I'm going to use my tongue

  883. not to pull people down,

  884. but to build people up.

  885. Tell you a story

  886. I heard about

  887. back in the 80s,

  888. I guess it was.

  889. There's a guy

  890. named Johnny Lingo.

  891. He was a native

  892. from Pacific Island

  893. way out near Tahiti somewhere.

  894. And this guy

  895. was a good-looking guy,

  896. young guy,

  897. late 20s,

  898. eligible bachelor,

  899. most eligible bachelor

  900. on the island.

  901. All the young ladies

  902. in town had wondered,

  903. when is he ever

  904. going to get married?

  905. They had a different

  906. kind of custom

  907. in that place

  908. where he lived.

  909. When you decided

  910. to get married,

  911. instead of just going

  912. to your fiance,

  913. you went to the town square

  914. and you announced

  915. to the whole town,

  916. hey, I've decided

  917. I'm going to take a bride

  918. and here's who my bride is.

  919. They announced it.

  920. And the following week

  921. on the next Saturday,

  922. the whole town

  923. would gather

  924. and the father

  925. and the groom-to-be

  926. would barter

  927. over the price

  928. of the bride.

  929. They always dealt

  930. in cows.

  931. Some women,

  932. if they weren't

  933. too attractive,

  934. were one-cow women.

  935. Some women,

  936. if they were kind of average,

  937. were two-cow women.

  938. If you were really

  939. a looker,

  940. you might be

  941. a three-cow woman.

  942. Every blue moon,

  943. a four-cow woman

  944. would come about.

  945. And it was just phenomenal

  946. if you were

  947. a four-cow woman.

  948. So Johnny Lingo

  949. comes to town one day

  950. and everybody's wondering

  951. when he's ever

  952. going to get married.

  953. He's good-looking.

  954. He's got lots of money

  955. and he announces

  956. to the town,

  957. I'm going to marry.

  958. Next Saturday,

  959. I'm going to marry.

  960. And everyone's,

  961. who's it going to be?

  962. Who's it going to be?

  963. And they thought,

  964. maybe this real

  965. good-looking gal

  966. or that good-looking gal.

  967. When he announced

  968. his choice,

  969. the whole town,

  970. you couldn't believe

  971. the silence that fell.

  972. He said,

  973. I intend to marry Mejia.

  974. And they thought,

  975. Mejia?

  976. Is he crazy?

  977. Mejia?

  978. Mejia's hair

  979. was unkept.

  980. She was never

  981. dressed appropriately.

  982. She was backward

  983. and shy

  984. and just removed

  985. from everything.

  986. The kids had made fun

  987. of her all of her life.

  988. Now she's a young woman.

  989. And they just couldn't,

  990. why is he taking Mejia?

  991. Somebody said,

  992. it's because he's got

  993. all that money.

  994. He's tired.

  995. He's just too cheap

  996. to get a good wife.

  997. So,

  998. the following Saturday,

  999. they meet there

  1000. in the town square

  1001. and the father

  1002. of Mejia comes

  1003. and says,

  1004. I'll sell you Mejia

  1005. because he knows

  1006. he can't push it.

  1007. You know,

  1008. she's not much of a looker.

  1009. He says,

  1010. two cows.

  1011. And Johnny Lingo says,

  1012. Johnny Lingo

1013. not give you two cows.

  1014. Johnny Lingo

  1015. give you

  1016. not two cows.

  1017. He says,

  1018. well,

  1019. okay,

  1020. one cow.

  1021. He says,

  1022. no,

  1023. Johnny Lingo

1024. not give you one cow.

  1025. Guy says,

  1026. look,

  1027. you're not getting

  1028. her for horns

  1029. and hooves.

  1030. So,

  1031. he says,

  1032. no,

  1033. no,

  1034. you don't understand.

  1035. Johnny Lingo

  1036. not give you

  1037. two cows.

  1038. Johnny Lingo

  1039. not give you

  1040. one cow.

  1041. Johnny Lingo

  1042. give you

  1043. ten cows

  1044. from Mejia.

  1045. Everybody was stunned.

  1046. One person said,

  1047. it's because he's got

  1048. all that money.

  1049. He doesn't want to

  1050. show off how much

  1051. money he's got.

  1052. Well,

  1053. he pays the guy

  1054. the ten cows.

  1055. He takes Mejia

  1056. by the hand

  1057. and they leave

1058. to go on their honeymoon.

  1059. They're going to be

  1060. gone 30 days.

  1061. As he's leaving,

1062. he gets to the edge

  1063. of town.

  1064. There's this little

  1065. British mercantile

  1066. and he goes inside

1067. and he asks this merchant,

1068. you have one of those

  1069. pearl-covered,

  1070. pearl-handled combs

  1071. and brush sets

  1072. with a mirror?

  1073. Guy says,

  1074. no,

1075. but I can order you one.

1076. When will it be here?

  1077. It'll be here

  1078. in about three weeks.

  1079. That's good.

  1080. We're going on

  1081. a four-week honeymoon.

  1082. When we get back,

  1083. you bring it out

  1084. to my place.

  1085. And so,

  1086. the guy agrees.

  1087. Well,

  1088. they're going

  1089. 30-day honeymoon.

  1090. He comes back.

  1091. The British merchant

  1092. gets the thing

  1093. he's ordered

  1094. and he's going

  1095. to take it out

  1096. to his little hut

  1097. at the edge

  1098. of the island.

  1099. He gets out

  1100. to the guy's hut.

  1101. He's still about

  1102. 150 yards away

  1103. and he hears voices

  1104. and they're loud voices.

  1105. One voice in material

  1106. is just saying

  1107. over and over,

  1108. you cheated me,

  1109. you cheated me,

  1110. you cheated me.

  1111. And he gets closer,

  1112. about 100 yards away.

  1113. He sees this figure

1114. come storming out of the hut

  1115. and it looks like

  1116. he is daddy.

  1117. Well,

  1118. he gets closer still.

  1119. He's about 25,

  1120. 50 yards away

  1121. and this beautiful,

  1122. not dead,

  1123. gorgeous woman

  1124. comes out

  1125. and she's got

1126. something to get water with

  1127. and she walks

  1128. to the well.

  1129. Merchant walks on up

  1130. on the porch

1131. and knocks at the door.

  1132. Johnny Lingo

  1133. comes to the door

  1134. and he says,

1135. I see you have my brush

  1136. and mirror set

  1137. and he says yes

1138. and he pays him for it.

  1139. He says,

  1140. Johnny,

  1141. I'm not trying

1142. to be nosy or anything.

  1143. He said,

1144. but was that Mejia's dad

1145. I heard arguing with you

  1146. as I came up

  1147. and he said,

  1148. yeah.

  1149. He said,

1150. did he say you cheated him?

  1151. He said,

  1152. yeah.

1153. What did you cheat him over?

  1154. He says,

  1155. well,

  1156. I didn't cheat him.

  1157. He says,

  1158. but he says,

  1159. I cheated him.

  1160. He says,

  1161. he said,

  1162. I gave too little

  1163. for Mejia.

  1164. Too little?

  1165. You gave 10 cows.

  1166. He said,

  1167. I know,

1168. but he thinks I cheated.

  1169. He said,

  1170. oh,

1171. and one other thing said,

  1172. who's that gorgeous woman

  1173. that walked out

  1174. of the house

  1175. a minute ago

  1176. to go draw water?

  1177. He said,

  1178. oh,

  1179. that's Mejia.

  1180. Mejia?

  1181. Well,

  1182. what happened to her

1183. in the last 30 days?

  1184. Johnny said,

  1185. well,

  1186. you know,

  1187. Johnny,

  1188. Lingo,

  1189. pretty shrewd businessman.

  1190. He said,

1191. I know all my life.

  1192. She's a real cat.

  1193. She's a real fan.

  1194. He said,

1195. but the kids at school,

1196. they made fun of her.

1197. She didn't wear nice clothes

1198. the way the other kids did.

  1199. They belittled her.

  1200. Her dad belittled her.

1201. Her dad often drove her

  1202. away from the house.

  1203. She became backward,

  1204. lived in the woods

1205. by herself much of her life.

  1206. He said,

  1207. but I always know,

  1208. Mejia,

  1209. she a real prize.

  1210. He said,

  1211. well,

  1212. how did she transform

1213. so much in 30 days?

  1214. He said,

  1215. oh,

  1216. that's the easy part.

  1217. He said,

  1218. every day,

  1219. I look at Mejia

  1220. and say,

  1221. Mejia,

1222. most of them girls in town,

  1223. one,

  1224. two,

  1225. three cow women,

  1226. you a 10 cow woman.

1227. I'm going to tell you something.

  1228. People will become

  1229. what you tell them

  1230. they are.

  1231. Do you know that?

  1232. My little grand boy,

1233. I hold him in my arms

  1234. every week.

  1235. And every week,

  1236. I tell him

  1237. how sweet he is,

  1238. how smart he is,

1239. what a good boy he is.

  1240. Because I'm convinced

1241. if I tell him that

1242. over and over and over,

1243. he's going to become that.

1244. He's going to become that.

  1245. I hope you'll choose

  1246. to use your words

  1247. to build others up.

  1248. Thirdly,

  1249. I hope you'll choose

1250. to speak only the truth.

  1251. Psalm 15,

  1252. verse 4b,

  1253. says this.

  1254. It's one of my,

  1255. again,

  1256. favorite verses.

1257. The psalmist is talking about

  1258. who can live

  1259. on God's holy hill.

1260. Who can live with God?

  1261. Boy,

1262. you've got to get your game together

  1263. to live with God,

  1264. you'd think.

1265. This is what he says.

  1266. One of the attributes

1267. of a man who will live with God.

1268. He sweareth to his own hurt

  1269. and changeth not.

1270. That's the King James Version,

  1271. but I like that.

1272. He sweareth to his own hurt

  1273. and he changeth not.

1274. You know what that means?

  1275. It means

  1276. when he's faced

  1277. with telling the truth

1278. and thereby being embarrassed by it

1279. or being hurt by it,

1280. he still just tells the truth.

1281. He's not going to attempt

  1282. to save face

  1283. by telling a lie.

  1284. And when we lie

  1285. to cover up something

  1286. we've done wrong,

  1287. that's what we're doing.

  1288. You know that?

1289. We're trying to save face.

1290. But you know what happens?

1291. When that lie is discovered,

1292. we not only lose faith,

  1293. but we also lose

  1294. our sense of integrity.

  1295. We've lost worse

  1296. than just face.

1297. And the man or woman of God

  1298. who uses her tongue

  1299. as they should,

1300. they always speak the truth.

1301. Can I ask you something?

1302. Is that how you speak?

  1303. I don't know

1304. if I accomplished it or not,

  1305. but for 25 years

1306. when I was at Western

  1307. or Brushy Creek,

1308. I tried to always be somebody

  1309. who spoke the truth.

1310. Because I'm going to tell you,

1311. your name and your integrity

  1312. means absolutely everything.

1313. You can't get that back

  1314. once you've lost it.

  1315. Do you understand that?

  1316. I didn't ever want anybody

  1317. to say,

  1318. well, you know what?

  1319. You better parse

  1320. Ralph Carter's sentences.

1321. You ever seen people like that?

  1322. They said something,

1323. but you've got to go out

1324. and you've got to interpret it.

1325. Now, what does that really mean?

  1326. Here's what he said,

1327. but what did he really mean?

  1328. I hope you'll use your tongue

1329. to always speak only the truth.

  1330. Fourthly,

  1331. choose to speak wholesomely.

  1332. Choose to speak wholesomely.

1333. Because the world seeks to be earthly

1334. doesn't mean that I've got to do the same.

1335. I'm going to tell you,

  1336. I'm disappointed

1337. at some of the preachers

  1338. I hear preaching today

  1339. because many think

1340. that they've got to be shock jocks.

  1341. They've got to use

1342. the language of the world

  1343. and earthy terms

  1344. and I know

1345. we want to be colorful

1346. and we want to be graphic

1347. and paint pictures for people,

1348. but I want to tell you something,

1349. you don't ever have to be earthy.

  1350. I don't know about you,

1351. my favorite type of movie

  1352. is a comedy,

1353. but I've just about quit watching them

1354. and the reason is because

  1355. people today

1356. will settle for cheap laughs

1357. by just using a word of profanity

  1358. or saying something vulgar

1359. or crude or off color.

1360. And there is no place for that

1361. in the life of a believer.

  1362. Choose to speak wholesomely

  1363. and finally,

  1364. choose to add authenticity

  1365. to your worship

1366. by guarding how you use your tongue.

1367. Now here's what I mean by that.

1368. If I use my tongue to praise God,

1369. it nullifies my act of worship.

  1370. And my credibility

1371. and authenticity as a believer,

  1372. if 15 minutes later,

  1373. 20 minutes later,

  1374. I'm heard talking in a fashion,

1375. I'm not talking about just crude speech,

1376. I'm talking about being hateful.

  1377. It nullifies the authenticity

  1378. of my worship.

1379. If I'm able to do that

  1380. with a waitress

  1381. or with my wife

  1382. or with my children

  1383. or my grandchildren

  1384. or somebody with whom

  1385. I have a dispute,

1386. we're all going to get in a dispute.

1387. You're going to have arguments,

  1388. but I don't tell you something,

1389. you don't have to be

1390. somebody who uses abusive speech

1391. even when you disagree with somebody.

1392. When I'm fishing at times,

  1393. I love to fish.

1394. When I fish at times,

1395. if a fish breaks off my hook,

1396. I reach my tackle box

  1397. and get another hook

1398. and I'll tie it on

1399. and I get it snug.

  1400. I've drawn it tight.

1401. I look in my tackle box

  1402. for a knife.

  1403. If I can't find a knife,

  1404. I look for a pair

  1405. of fingernail clippers.

  1406. When I can't find a pair

  1407. of fingernail clippers,

1408. those of you who fish

1409. know what I'm about to say,

  1410. right?

1411. Can I tell you something?

1412. God didn't give me teeth

1413. to cut fishing line with.

  1414. He didn't.

1415. And when I use my teeth

  1416. for that purpose,

  1417. I run the risk

  1418. of hurting myself,

  1419. hurting my teeth.

1420. When I use my tongue

1421. in a way that God

  1422. didn't intend for me

  1423. to use it,

  1424. I run the risk

  1425. of hurting myself

1426. and hurting those around me.

1427. So I'll use my tongue.

  1428. Choose today

  1429. to use my tongue

  1430. for exactly,

  1431. expressly what God

1432. gave me the tongue to do.

1433. And you know what that is?

  1434. To bring Him glory

1435. and to pick up people

  1436. around you,

1437. to point them to Jesus,

  1438. to encourage them.

  1439. Let's bow in prayer.

  1440. Father,

  1441. today as we come

1442. to this time of decision,

  1443. I pray God

  1444. that we would decide

  1445. how we're going

  1446. to use our tongues,

1447. that we would stop saying,

  1448. well,

  1449. that's just me

  1450. and that's how I talk

  1451. and take responsibility

  1452. for our actions

  1453. and our words.

  1454. Let us choose today

  1455. to use our tongues

  1456. the way you've intended

1457. for us to use them.

  1458. It's our prayer

  1459. in your name.

1460. For your sake we pray.

  1461. Amen.

1462. Let's stand as we sing.

  1463. Thank you.

  1464. com for your message

  1465. andtale.

  1466. What seems to choose

  1467. and you sing

  1468. as we have

  1469. such a challenge

  1470. is yourmotion

  1471. because today

  1472. it's our time

  1473. to give you anlat

  1474. for our sake of

  1475. matter here

  1476. and to you

  1477. you

  1478. sorry

  1479. may but

  1480. give you

  1481. or have to

  1482. the way you've

  1483. to learn

  1484. as you

  1485. and to utiliz
