  1. Well, if you have your Bibles, look with me to Acts chapter 2, and we're going to look at verses 41 through 47,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  2. continuing the message we began last week, finishing it up today.

  3. And for those of you who couldn't be here last week, let me just go back and play a little bit of catch-up

  4. for just three or four minutes to bring us all up to speed.

  5. Here's what we saw last week.

  6. Jesus has come, lived, died on the cross.

  7. Three days later, He's risen from the dead.

  8. He, 40 days after that, ascends into the heavens.

  9. Before He does, He commissions His church to take the gospel into the world.

  10. He gives them instruction.

  11. He's seen them in Judea.

  12. He's seen them down in Galilee.

  13. He tells them to go back to Jerusalem.

  14. He goes back with them.

  15. And there He tells them to remain in Jerusalem because in a few more days, the Holy Spirit of God is going to come.

  16. And so they meet together in the upper room where they had observed the Last Supper, and they begin to pray.

  17. There's not just the 12.

  18. There are 120 in number.

  19. They replace Judas as the 12th apostle, and then they begin to pray.

  20. And they pray for 10 days until Pentecost comes, 10 days following His ascension into the heavens.

  21. At Pentecost, it's a wild, wild time.

  22. They are praying, and suddenly there's the sound of a rushing mighty wind.

  23. We likened it last week to that of the sound of a tornado, if you've ever been through one of those.

  24. There's no wind.

  25. There's just noise.

  26. It brings out the people of the city, and even those who are in this room and they're praying,

  27. they suddenly experience the coming of the Spirit who descends in the likeness of a giant tongue of fire.

  28. The tongue of fire divides into many cloven tongues of fire and rests upon the heads of believers,

  29. and the 120 believers are instantaneously baptized and dwelt of the Spirit of God.

  30. They go out into the streets of Jerusalem.

  31. A crowd is gathering, people from all over the world, not just the residents of Jerusalem,

  32. but those who have come for the Passover and those who have stayed for Pentecost,

  33. and they begin to listen as these believers begin to prophesy and say things in languages they've never studied.

  34. Some skeptics in the crowd begin to say, hey, these men are drunk with wine.

  35. Peter defends them, says, no, it's early in the morning.

  36. That's not the case.

  37. What is happening here is what was predicted by the prophet Joel when he said young men would dream dreams

  38. and old men and old women would prophesy this is of God.

  39. And then he goes to the Psalms and he begins showing them that Jesus was the Christ.

  40. Preaches a powerful message and basically in the end says this,

  41. All of you here today are witnesses of what I'm telling you that we have rejected God's Son,

  42. and many of you here in this crowd have personally had a hand in putting him to death.

  43. You're responsible for killing the Messiah.

  44. But we all know, we cannot deny, that God raised him three days later from the dead.

  45. But the Spirit of God fell on those who were listening and many were pricked in their heart, the Scripture says, to their very soul.

  46. They came rushing to Peter and said, Peter, what can we do to be made right with God?

  47. And Peter looked at them boldly and said, you need to repent of your sin, repent of what you've done.

  48. You need to repent of all your sin.

  49. You need to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

  50. And if you really mean business with God, come and receive the mark of a believer, which is baptism.

  51. Three thousand that day.

  52. Are you ready for that?

  53. Three thousand that day came and became a part of this assembly.

  54. It says they were added to the church.

  55. It doesn't mean they were added to some role.

  56. We talked about that last week.

  57. It means they were adopted into the family of God there in Jerusalem.

  58. Now, here's the million-dollar question, the one that we're attempting to answer in this two-part sermon.

  59. And that is, where do we go from here?

  60. You're one of those 120 and 3,000 come forward.

  61. What do we do now?

  62. In the past, we've had Jesus at our side.

  63. Now, His Spirit is in us through the Holy Spirit, but it's near them.

  64. And they're seeking to learn how to follow Him.

  65. Where do we go from here?

  66. Nine things they did.

  67. Four of them we pointed out last week.

  68. I want to point out an additional five today.

  69. For those of you who weren't here, let me just hurriedly run through what those first four were.

  70. Right out of the gate, they baptized all those who followed Christ.

  71. And I want to tell you, they baptized them by immersion, I believe.

  72. The word means to die, to dip into something.

  73. I think they took them to a local river, and there they baptized them just as Jesus had earlier been baptized.

  74. I want to tell you, I think Baptists ought to be unapologetic about how we choose to baptize.

  75. I hope we will never give in to the thinking, well, it's just a symbol.

  76. The means of baptism, the method of baptism doesn't matter.

  77. Because in my estimation, it does.

  78. Is it a difference of having heaven and hell?

  79. Of course not.

  80. But it is significant because the way we baptize by immersion clearly sends a message to those who observe.

  81. That's the reason I believe, likewise, in public baptism the way they practiced it then.

  82. Here's what happens.

  83. It says, when a person is baptized, they're demonstrating outwardly, we believe in the death, burial, and subsequent resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

  84. As we carry a person on the water and bring them up out of the water.

  85. It also says, this person being baptized has died to their sin.

  86. They no longer exist.

  87. They are a new creature in Christ.

  88. It also says, just as Jesus was baptized of John, I choose to be his disciple.

  89. I want to follow in his example.

  90. So, they immediately baptized those 3,000 who came and became a part of the church.

  91. Second thing they did was this.

  92. They began to disciple those who were new to the faith.

  93. You got 120 people who have walked with Jesus during his earthly ministry.

  94. 3,000 who just become believers.

  95. They couldn't just turn these folk loose on their own, send them back to their native lands without knowing more about Jesus.

  96. And so, they began to meet on a daily basis.

  97. And they talked to them about all that Jesus did.

  98. All that Jesus said.

  99. All the correcting that Jesus ever did with his disciples.

  100. They immersed them in the teaching of Jesus.

  101. They discipled them.

  102. Thirdly, they worked hard to build a strong partnership.

  103. That word fellowship that we use so often,

  104. I'm afraid that we have equated that with cookies and ice cream and Cokes

  105. in a time of what we call fellowship.

  106. The Greek word was the word koinonia.

  107. It means they literally became partners.

  108. That's why I know when it says they added them,

  109. they didn't think of themselves as having just joined a religious club.

  110. We're a part of this religious institution that is meeting here in the heart of Jerusalem.

  111. That's not how they thought.

  112. They thought we're embracing a new way of thinking.

  113. We're embracing the Lord Jesus Christ.

  114. And that is the common denominator among all of us,

  115. is we share faith in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  116. They literally became partners.

  117. A fourth thing they did was this.

  118. They partnered together in prayer.

  119. And listen, as they prayed,

  120. I mean God did bona fide miracles.

  121. Now, you listen to a lot of folk, including preachers, I'm sad to say,

  122. talk about miracles today.

  123. And they used that word so loosely,

  124. it's just about lost all meaning.

  125. We will call reaching a high attendance goal a miracle.

  126. What was a miracle?

  127. We had 500 in Sunday school today.

  128. That's not a miracle.

  129. Clemson has 85,000 every Saturday in the fall.

  130. You understand that?

  131. You can draw a crowd by just doing some pretty good publicity,

  132. by getting on the phones and calling your friend.

  133. Nothing wrong with that.

  134. But just understand, that's not, is it a good thing?

  135. Yes.

  136. Did God have his hand in it?

  137. I believe he did.

  138. Is it a miracle?

  139. Well, of course not.

  140. This building that we're constructing out here,

  141. the front of your church,

  142. it's going to be gorgeous.

  143. And God has provided the means.

  144. Is it a miracle?

  145. No.

  146. Construction company's doing that.

  147. You understand?

  148. We're paying for it.

  149. It's not a miracle.

  150. It's a good thing.

  151. It's a godly thing.

  152. Is it a miracle?

  153. It's not a miracle.

  154. I want to tell you,

  155. a miracle is when God does something

  156. that no human being can possibly,

  157. in their right mind, take credit for.

  158. It's something so supernatural

  159. that any who look at that say,

  160. boy, I don't know how to explain that.

  161. Even if they don't believe in God,

  162. that's unexplainable.

  163. But, man, something happened here

  164. that's beyond the normal.

  165. It's beyond the realm of explanation.

  166. And I'm telling you,

  167. God did bona fide miracles.

  168. Men who were lame got up and walked.

  169. People speaking in languages

  170. they've never understood or studied,

  171. that's a miracle.

  172. It's a miracle how the gospel

  173. of the Lord Jesus Christ spread

  174. in that first century.

  175. And here's what verse 43 and 42 and 43 tell us.

  176. It uses the imperfect tense in that verb

  177. that fear kept coming upon them.

  178. And what it means is this.

  179. The more they prayed,

  180. the more God did.

  181. And the more God did,

  182. the more they stood in awe of God.

  183. And the more they stood in awe of God,

  184. the more they prayed.

  185. And the more they prayed,

  186. the more God did.

  187. And it became a wonderful cycle.

  188. And I'm telling you,

  189. more than anything else,

  190. that's what's holding our churches back

  191. from being more successful

  192. in evangelism today than anything else.

  193. We don't witness the power of God

  194. the way we once did.

  195. And I believe that's attributable to the fact

  196. we don't pray as we once did.

  197. Well, let's move on.

  198. You've caught up with me now

  199. where we are in our message.

  200. The fifth thing I want you to see is this.

  201. They were incredibly generous

  202. in sharing what they had

  203. to meet the needs of congregants

  204. in their assembly.

  205. You look at verse 44 and 45.

  206. Now, all the believers were together

  207. and had everything in common.

  208. Let that sink in for a minute.

  209. Now, all the believers were together

  210. and had everything in common.

  211. And when we read that,

  212. sometimes we're tempted to think

  213. that means they were in one spirit

  214. and one accord like we read about

  215. in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  216. Well, it indicates that a little bit,

  217. but that's not nearly the essence

  218. of what it's saying.

  219. Look at verse, the same verse

  220. or the next verse.

  221. So they sold their possessions and property

  222. and distributed the proceeds to all

  223. as anyone had need.

  224. Can you get your head around that?

  225. Have you ever been a part of a church

  226. where that kind of thing was taking place?

  227. I know you're a part of a generous church,

  228. but can you imagine this level of generosity?

  229. And let me tell you what drove them to do that.

  230. These people who had come to know Christ,

  231. many of them were from other parts of the world.

  232. That's the reason there was a need

  233. for this miracle of tongues.

  234. And so as they had come together for Passover

  235. and now Pentecost,

  236. and now they received Christ as Savior,

  237. these who had been with Jesus recognized

  238. we can't send them back to their homes

  239. unless they know more about the gospel.

  240. And so they immersed them

  241. in the teachings of Jesus.

  242. And these folk didn't immediately return home.

  243. And after a period of time,

  244. their resources ran out.

  245. And so what they did was they said,

  246. hey, we need to help these people out,

  247. these fellow believers out.

  248. These people have become a part of our family.

  249. We are inseparably linked to them

  250. and tied to them.

  251. They're partners with us in Christ.

  252. And so some had some real estate.

  253. They went and sold it.

  254. Some had some homes or some possessions.

  255. They sold them.

  256. And they brought the money

  257. and they laid it at the apostles' feet,

  258. the next few chapters tell us.

  259. And they then distributed it

  260. to people in the congregation

  261. however they needed it.

  262. Now, some folks have mistakenly said

  263. this is a picture of what communism looks like.

  264. And that's why we ought to be communist.

  265. That's absolutely false.

  266. This is not a picture of communism at all.

  267. It is a picture of Christianity at its best.

  268. Understand the differences in this in communism.

  269. Communism says,

  270. I'm going to give you five

  271. and you'll have five

  272. and you'll have five

  273. and you'll have five.

  274. At least in theory, that's what they say.

  275. It never really works out that way.

  276. But we're all going to take what we have

  277. and spread it out

  278. and everybody will have five

  279. and we'll all be equal

  280. and we'll all have equal concern

  281. for everyone in the world.

  282. But if you want to see a true picture of communism,

  283. look at the Ukraine right now.

  284. That's a picture of what communism looks like

  285. where Putin says,

  286. you know what?

  287. We have might and might makes us right.

  288. And because we can take what is yours,

  289. we will.

  290. And we'll take as much of it

  291. with no regard for you or your people

  292. or the sanctity of life.

  293. We'll just take whatever we desire.

  294. That's communism.

  295. You understand that?

  296. And what you see here is exactly the opposite.

  297. It is a spirit of generosity

  298. born by people's gratitude

  299. for what Christ has done for them on the cross.

  300. where God changes our heart.

  301. And material things are no longer the benchmark

  302. by which we measure the success of our lives

  303. because we know there's life after this life.

  304. So do we use material things?

  305. We do.

  306. Is it okay to have material things?

  307. It is.

  308. But do we just invest our whole life in that?

  309. Of course not.

  310. We recognize this is a tool that God has given for us

  311. to help others and to spread the gospel.

  312. I'm going to tell you,

  313. if you want to be a New Testament church,

  314. a solid, good New Testament church,

  315. be known by your generosity.

  316. Man, I was fortunate.

  317. I pastored only two churches in 40 years,

  318. and both of them were generous, generous churches.

  319. They were generous when they had a little,

  320. and they were generous when God had blessed them,

  321. and they had more.

  322. I hope you'll always endeavor to be a generous church.

  323. Now, let me just say a personal word here,

  324. and I'm not going to dwell on this,

  325. but I just want to tell you something.

  326. I've been looking at your budget,

  327. and I want to first of all commend you

  328. for exceeding your Lottie Moon offering

  329. and for doing well in the campaign

  330. to build this new addition to your building.

  331. But two weeks ago,

  332. I was looking at how far we've fallen behind

  333. in our budget receipts to date,

  334. and we were about 60,000 two weeks ago,

  335. and I saw where today you've closed that gap

  336. and you're only 50,000 behind,

  337. and man, that's great.

  338. Can I tell you something?

  339. It won't be long.

  340. You'll have a full-time pastor.

  341. Don't put the burden on him

  342. of having to find a way

  343. to close that gap.

  344. Can I just be honest with you?

  345. If I were coming as your pastor

  346. in the days to come,

  347. I would want to do this in my first year.

  348. I don't know what he'll do,

  349. but I suspect whoever you get,

  350. this will be their agenda,

  351. to come in in that first year

  352. and simply preach the Scripture

  353. and get to know you and love you

  354. and not have to make hard, critical decisions,

  355. especially about my...

  356. In fact, if I came as your pastor,

  357. I wouldn't want to talk about money

  358. for a whole year

  359. if I could get out of it

  360. because I'd want to build credibility

  361. with you where you trusted me

  362. and you knew that, okay,

  363. it's okay for him to do that.

  364. He's proven himself.

  365. Don't make him come in

  366. and ride out of that,

  367. have to deal with financial issues.

  368. Right now, you're not paying

  369. a full-time pastor

  370. and you're not paying

  371. a full-time youth minister,

  372. and I'm telling you,

  373. if a full-time pastor was here

  374. and a full-time youth person were here,

  375. that pastor would have

  376. some difficult decisions

  377. to make financially going forward.

  378. So don't put him in that position.

  379. Just take that off the table.

  380. Say, you know what?

  381. Between now and Easter,

  382. let's really try to close this gap

  383. so that it's not as significant

  384. as it is now.

  385. There's a sixth thing,

  386. don't you see they did?

  387. They were faithful

  388. in getting together for worship.

  389. Look at verse 46 for a moment.

  390. And allow every word to sink in.

  391. And every day.

  392. Everybody say that with me.

  393. And every day.

  394. They devoted themselves

  395. to meeting together

  396. in the temple complex.

  397. Every day.

  398. Every day.

  399. You know what that means?

  400. That means Sunday they gathered

  401. and they had worship

  402. and they prayed

  403. and they probably ended up

  404. with a fellowship meal.

  405. They got to get,

  406. they did some discipleship.

  407. And then of course on Monday,

  408. well they got together

  409. and they worship

  410. and they prayed

  411. and they fellowship.

  412. But then on Tuesday

  413. they got together

  414. and they worship

  415. and they prayed

  416. and they fellowship

  417. and on Wednesday

  418. they got together

  419. and they prayed

  420. and they fellowship.

  421. But now come Thursday

  422. they got together

  423. and they prayed

  424. and they fellowship.

  425. And then Friday

  426. they got together

  427. and they prayed

  428. and they fellowship.

  429. But Saturday

  430. they got together

  431. and they prayed

  432. and they fellowship.

  433. and then they did that again

  434. every day

  435. now

  436. we're not going to do that here

  437. and we can't do that here

  438. I don't want anybody to feel guilty about that

  439. because I want you to know

  440. the world that they were a part of

  441. is not like the world that you and I

  442. are a part of and that's not our fault

  443. we shouldn't feel guilty

  444. our world has changed

  445. I want to show you something

  446. Jesus came into Jerusalem 2,000 years ago

  447. on a donkey

  448. but at the turn

  449. the beginning of the 20th century

  450. man was still

  451. pretty much riding on beast

  452. of burden

  453. they were pretty much getting around on donkeys

  454. and on horses

  455. but in the last 120 years things have

  456. radically changed

  457. our world has shrunk

  458. in many ways but it has also expanded

  459. for us personally

  460. because now we have the ability to be here today

  461. and in New York this afternoon

  462. or to be in Europe tomorrow morning

  463. right

  464. and some of you

  465. you don't work the way they did then

  466. where they worked pretty much

  467. within a few hundred yards of their houses

  468. many of you work 5 or 10 miles from home

  469. and many of you work 50 or 100 or 1,000 miles from home

  470. some of you get in the car on Monday morning

  471. or on a plane Sunday afternoon

  472. and you're somewhere all week

  473. and you're back here on Friday

  474. and with your families on the weekend

  475. man our world has changed

  476. right

  477. and so

  478. we can no longer

  479. because of school

  480. and so anything

  481. we can't meet

  482. seven days a week

  483. but I want to tell you something

  484. we can be regular

  485. in our worship

  486. we can come together

  487. on a weekly basis

  488. and we can worship the Lord

  489. and praise the Lord

  490. and do discipleship

  491. even more than one day a week

  492. we can meet to pray

  493. and we can meet to fellowship

  494. and to do the work of the church

  495. but the big thing is

  496. there needs to be regularity

  497. in our worship

  498. in Hebrews chapter 10

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  499. one translation

  500. puts that old verse

  501. that we all know by memory

  502. forsake not the assembling

  503. of yourselves together

  504. as the manner of some is

  505. here's how it puts it

  506. not staying away

  507. from our worship meetings

  508. as some habitually do

  509. in other words

  510. not just once in a while

  511. but often

  512. but encouraging each other

  513. and all the more

  514. as you see the day

  515. the day of Christ returns

  516. what it's talking about

  517. drawing near

  518. the writer of Hebrews

  519. is saying this

  520. listen

  521. I know you're busy

  522. and I know

  523. there are things going on

  524. in your world

  525. but don't get to the place

  526. that you forsake

  527. the assembling

  528. of yourselves together

  529. some have

  530. taken up that habit

  531. and they are habitually

  532. out of fellowship

  533. with the church

  534. do you hear what he's saying

  535. you need to assemble

  536. with other believers

  537. and that's true

  538. not just during times

  539. of heartache

  540. but in your everyday routine

  541. you need the fellowship

  542. of the church

  543. and I'm going to tell you something

  544. the fellowship of the church

  545. needs you

  546. we need you in the choir

  547. we need you in midweek prayer service

  548. we need you in the nursery

  549. they just desperately need folk

  550. down in the nursery

  551. all the time

  552. they need people

  553. in the children's department

  554. and in the youth ministry

  555. we need believers

  556. here at the church

  557. and believers need to be a part

  558. of the fellowship of God

  559. can I tell you

  560. the last few years

  561. of my ministry

  562. at Brushy Creek

  563. boy it broke my heart

  564. some things I saw happening

  565. and it wasn't just

  566. at Brushy Creek

  567. it was across the board

  568. I talked to so many pastors

  569. about this

  570. from about the year 2000

  571. attendance in church

  572. radically changed

  573. I'm talking about

  574. people's attendance habits

  575. changed

  576. from the way it was

  577. when I started

  578. in the 70's

  579. when I went to

  580. Western Avenue

  581. in the 70's

  582. you could count on this

  583. there were about 80%

  584. of whoever was in

  585. the congregation

  586. that attended

  587. almost every Sunday

  588. about 50%

  589. of that 80%

  590. about 40%

  591. of the whole church

  592. attended

  593. Sunday night

  594. Wednesday night

  595. anytime the doors

  596. were open

  597. but about 80%

  598. attended

  599. on Sunday morning

  600. you count on them

  601. being there

  602. next Sunday

  603. and next Sunday

  604. and next Sunday

  605. and next Sunday

  606. and they would miss

  607. two to three

  608. or four weeks a year

  609. and we call those

  610. active participants

  611. right

  612. we all knew

  613. what it was

  614. he's active

  615. in his church

  616. it meant

  617. he's there

  618. just about every time

  619. the doors are open

  620. he's there

  621. at least four

  622. or five Sundays

  623. out of the month

  624. occasionally

  625. he'll be off

  626. on vacation

  627. occasionally

  628. after work

  629. occasionally

  630. he'll be sick

  631. but most all the time

  632. he's there

  633. then there was about

  634. 20% of the congregation

  635. that are hit and miss

  636. they'd come one Sunday

  637. they'd miss the next

  638. or they'd come two Sundays

  639. and then they'd miss

  640. the next two

  641. or they'd come for a month

  642. and then you wouldn't

  643. see them for a month

  644. you know what I'm talking about

  645. right

  646. and then you had

  647. the third category person

  648. and that's the ones

  649. who showed up

  650. on Christmas and Easter

  651. they'd always come out

  652. the door and say

  653. pastor

  654. is that the only

  655. two messages

  656. you got

  657. well

  658. come more often

  659. maybe you'll hear

  660. something different

  661. you know

  662. but around the year

  663. 2000

  664. we not only

  665. recognized

  666. that Americans

  667. have more

  668. disposable income

  669. they have more

  670. what they view

  671. as disposable

  672. time

  673. and what happened

  674. was this

  675. it got to be

  676. okay

  677. for folk

  678. to miss

  679. a couple

  680. three Sundays

  681. a month

  682. and they could

  683. go the

  684. on vacation

  685. and then next week

  686. they might go to the lakes

  687. they got a friend

  688. that's got a lake house

  689. they'll just go the way

  690. or maybe

  691. Wade just

  692. worked hard this week

  693. and we just need to sleep in

  694. or I've got some yard work

  695. I need to do

  696. and it got to where

  697. instead of

  698. one or two groups

  699. in the church

  700. that 80% group

  701. just disappeared

  702. and

  703. we redefined

  704. what it was

  705. to be active

  706. people in their mind

  707. think now

  708. that active is

  709. I show up a couple times

  710. a month at church

  711. I'm active

  712. I've actually seen people

  713. in times past

  714. when I'm still a pastor

  715. and I'd say

  716. hey we missed you

  717. the last couple of Sundays

  718. and they'd look at you like

  719. how dare you insult me

  720. I'm active

  721. I was here three weeks ago

  722. you understand what I'm saying

  723. the scripture

  724. warns us

  725. admonishes us

  726. don't forsake the assembling

  727. of yourselves together

  728. as the matter of some is

  729. you know

  730. it's important

  731. that we be faithful

  732. to our church

  733. that that become

  734. a priority in your life

  735. and I want to tell you

  736. especially why

  737. those of you

  738. in this room

  739. who maybe have fallen

  740. in that category

  741. where you say

  742. well we go about

  743. every other week

  744. or we go two out of three weeks

  745. can I tell you something

  746. your parents went more often

  747. than that

  748. for the most part

  749. now some of you

  750. may have come from

  751. non-Christian homes

  752. but

  753. attendance has been declining

  754. in terms of people's

  755. habits of regularity

  756. for the last 20-30 years

  757. and I want to tell you something

  758. you're going to live to regret

  759. the time's going to come

  760. when you see your children

  761. leave home

  762. you're going to find out

  763. rather than come

  764. once or twice a month

  765. they're not going to come at all

  766. because you're signaling them

  767. it's okay

  768. not to be faithful

  769. in my attendance

  770. it's just not that important

  771. I can still love God

  772. and I can still

  773. you see what I'm saying

  774. you don't want to do that

  775. these people

  776. they were faithful

  777. in their

  778. attendance

  779. to church

  780. seventh thing

  781. I want you to see

  782. is this

  783. they got along well

  784. and worked to protect

  785. the harmony

  786. of their fellowship

  787. verse 46

  788. the latter part of the verse

  789. and broke bread

  790. from house to house

  791. they ate their food

  792. with gladness

  793. and simplicity

  794. of heart

  795. you know what that says

  796. they got along

  797. they liked

  798. each other

  799. you wouldn't meet

  800. so often

  801. and go to each other's

  802. homes

  803. and fellowship

  804. and have your meals

  805. and be involved

  806. in that level

  807. of discipleship

  808. unless

  809. you developed

  810. a strong bond

  811. with each other

  812. these people

  813. were friends

  814. in and out

  815. of church

  816. they were their

  817. closest associates

  818. they were the ones

  819. they were doing

  820. life together with

  821. and so as a result

  822. man they protected

  823. the fellowship

  824. of their church

  825. now you see that

  826. in the epistles

  827. of Paul

  828. one of the churches

  829. Paul liked

  830. I believe the best

  831. we had him here

  832. right now in this state

  833. he'd say Paul

  834. of all the churches

  835. you ever served at

  836. which one you liked

  837. the best

  838. I don't know

  839. which one he'd say

  840. but he would tell you

  841. one of the places

  842. he liked the best

  843. was the Philippians

  844. they were good to it

  845. and he wrote them

  846. the book of Philippians

  847. is about that relationship

  848. but even in the midst

  849. of this book

  850. you know what he says

  851. he said there are

  852. two old girls

  853. in that church

  854. who man

  855. they're fellow workers

  856. with me in the ministry

  857. and I love them both

  858. but you know what I hear

  859. I hear they're at odds

  860. with each other

  861. some of you go

  862. and straighten that mess out

  863. man don't

  864. don't let them continue

  865. to be at each other

  866. work through that

  867. to the Corinthians

  868. a church

  869. I think he probably

  870. had a lot of problems with

  871. he says hey

  872. I hear

  873. and I partially believe

  874. it's true

  875. because I'm hearing

  876. so often

  877. that there is actually

  878. division among you

  879. and he cites

  880. some of the problems

  881. and he says

  882. you need to address

  883. these problems

  884. and you need to

  885. discipline those folks

  886. even if it means

  887. putting them out

  888. of the church

  889. for the good

  890. of the whole body

  891. you need to do that

  892. so this was

  893. a tight-knit group

  894. they loved each other

  895. but I want to tell you

  896. something

  897. they weren't above

  898. going to somebody

  899. and saying hey

  900. you know what

  901. your life is drifted

  902. away from the truth

  903. and we need to call

  904. you back

  905. and you need to

  906. repent

  907. and if not

  908. we're going to

  909. practice church

  910. discipline

  911. in your life

  912. and in our church

  913. we have this notion

  914. today

  915. that to be loving

  916. is always to be

  917. gentle

  918. but I'm telling you

  919. to be loving

  920. at times

  921. is to be gentle

  922. but at times

  923. it's to say

  924. we can't put up

  925. with any foolishness

  926. I raise my kids

  927. on that principle

  928. and I'm going to

  929. love you

  930. and as long as

  931. I can be gentle

  932. I'm going to be gentle

  933. but I'm going to

  934. tell you something

  935. if I have to have

  936. a firm hand with you

  937. I'm going to

  938. exercise a firm hand

  939. because I'm going

  940. to discipline you

  941. because there's a way

  942. I want you to turn out

  943. and I don't want you

  944. to be lawless

  945. I don't want you

  946. to be unruly

  947. I don't want you

  948. to be making trouble

  949. all your life

  950. for yourself

  951. or for other folks

  952. and so is their daddy

  953. I discipline my children

  954. and they love me

  955. and respect me

  956. for that

  957. I want to tell you

  958. I've been disappointed

  959. at times

  960. in the church

  961. when I see

  962. church people

  963. sit back

  964. and see somebody

  965. in the church

  966. who is unruly

  967. who divides

  968. who is

  969. a sharp tongue

  970. and leadership

  971. in the church

  972. and membership

  973. in the church

  974. just sits there

  975. and never says a word

  976. they think

  977. they tell themselves

  978. try to convince themselves

  979. we're just being loving

  980. we're just being patient

  981. we're just being gracious

  982. and sometimes

  983. it's a matter

  984. of being cowardly

  985. before I left

  986. Western Avenue

  987. I'd been there

  988. about 15 years

  989. and one of the last

  990. couple three years

  991. I was there

  992. we were having

  993. a business meeting

  994. and there was this lady

  995. who from the very start

  996. of my ministry there

  997. she didn't do it often

  998. but about once

  999. every year

  1000. 18 months

1001. she was going to say

  1002. something in a business

  1003. meeting that was crass

1004. she was going to pick

  1005. somebody apart

  1006. sometimes it was staff

  1007. sometimes it was me

1008. sometimes it was a deacon

  1009. in the church

1010. but she would just say

  1011. something that just

1012. had a barb to it

1013. and when she would do it

  1014. well people would just

  1015. wince

  1016. you could sit on

  1017. people didn't like it

  1018. in the congregation

1019. they were a harmonious church

1020. and they didn't like that

  1021. but she would say

  1022. and one Sunday night

  1023. in a business meeting

  1024. she had some pretty

  1025. sharp words for me

  1026. and she said

  1027. what she said

  1028. and I didn't say anything

  1029. and we went on

  1030. the business meeting

1031. and when it was over

1032. I looked over at my wife

1033. and four or five women

  1034. had come and gathered

  1035. around my wife

  1036. because tears

  1037. were streaming

  1038. down her face

1039. she didn't like to see me

1040. get beat up like that

  1041. and so

  1042. they were huddling

  1043. around her

1044. and I went over to her

  1045. and said

  1046. you ready to go

1047. and I heard one of these

1048. women say to my wife

  1049. she said

1050. I want you to know

1051. call this lady by name

1052. says we all take her

1053. with a grain of salt

  1054. don't pay that

  1055. any attention

1056. we know how she is

  1057. she's always been

  1058. she was that way

  1059. with the last

1060. she just got to say

  1061. what she says

  1062. she prides herself

  1063. in her frankness

  1064. and her candor

1065. and we don't take her

  1066. seriously

  1067. she just says

  1068. what she says

  1069. and then she said

1070. we want you to know

  1071. we're always behind you

1072. we've always got your back

  1073. my wife

1074. it was out of character

  1075. for her

  1076. because I'm the one

  1077. who's more opinionated

1078. but she looked that lady

  1079. in the face

  1080. and she said

  1081. that's the problem

  1082. there are times

  1083. I wish you were

  1084. in front of us

  1085. instead of behind us

1086. you hear what I'm saying

  1087. you've been in those

  1088. meetings haven't you

  1089. where somebody said

  1090. something

  1091. you just knew

  1092. that's not

  1093. Christian behavior

  1094. that's not how

  1095. we should act

  1096. and I'm telling you

1097. it would be a good thing

  1098. if in those moments

1099. you went to that person

  1100. either publicly

  1101. or privately

  1102. depending on the situation

  1103. how bad it is

  1104. and say

  1105. you know what

  1106. we love you

  1107. we're not going to

  1108. tolerate it here

  1109. at First Baptist Pickens

1110. that's not how we behave

1111. that's not how the Bible

  1112. instructs kingdom people

  1113. to behave

  1114. and say

1115. you can't do that here

1116. if you're going to do that

1117. you're going to have to

  1118. go somewhere else

  1119. because

1120. we just can't tolerate that

  1121. they guarded

  1122. the fellowship

  1123. of the church

1124. and I'm going to tell you

  1125. something

  1126. a church that doesn't

  1127. guard the fellowship

  1128. of the church

  1129. is a church

  1130. that one day

  1131. will be in trouble

  1132. if you think

  1133. harmony just happens

  1134. and unity just happens

  1135. you're mistaken

1136. you've got to guard it

1137. you've got to prize it

  1138. I hit my odometer

  1139. this morning

  1140. five miles

  1141. from the church

  1142. going that direction

  1143. on highway 8

  1144. because I'd noticed

  1145. this before

1146. and I had my wife

1147. who was in the dark

  1148. this morning

  1149. because of the time

  1150. moving back

  1151. I think I got them all

  1152. I'm not sure

1153. but you know how many

  1154. churches there are

  1155. from just five miles

  1156. down this road

1157. to this spot right here

  1158. there are either

  1159. 16 or 17 churches

  1160. down that road

1161. in a five mile distance

  1162. you think that's all

  1163. about missions

  1164. you think that's all

  1165. about spreading

  1166. the gospel

  1167. of the Lord Jesus

  1168. are you like me

1169. are you a little bit

  1170. suspicious that

  1171. we just can't get

  1172. along one another

  1173. isn't that the case

  1174. you hear about that

  1175. old guy

  1176. he was rescued

  1177. from this island

  1178. and he'd been

  1179. missing five years

1180. and when they got there

  1181. they said

  1182. hey we spotted you

  1183. by a plane

  1184. and we came back

  1185. to rescue you

  1186. and so they're

  1187. putting him

  1188. in the helicopter

1189. to get him out of there

  1190. and this guy

  1191. who was flying

  1192. the helicopter

  1193. said

  1194. hey you got

  1195. three outbuildings

  1196. out here

  1197. what are these buildings

  1198. he said

  1199. well that's my house

  1200. okay well

  1201. what's that other building

  1202. he said

  1203. well that's where

  1204. I go to church

  1205. he said

  1206. well what's that

  1207. other building

  1208. he said

  1209. well that's where

1210. I used to go to church

  1211. that's why you got

  1212. 17 buildings

  1213. down this road

  1214. you understand

  1215. because

  1216. we don't take seriously

  1217. working out

  1218. our differences

  1219. and guarding

  1220. our harmony

  1221. and guarding

  1222. our unity

  1223. it's just easier

  1224. to pick up

  1225. and go somewhere else

1226. I want you to see

  1227. an 8 thing

  1228. they were looked on

  1229. with favor

  1230. by the outside world

  1231. verse 47

  1232. 8

  1233. praising God

  1234. and having favor

  1235. with all the people

  1236. that means just those

  1237. in the church

  1238. that's what we just

  1239. got through talking about

  1240. here he's talking about

  1241. having favor with people

  1242. outside the church

1243. I just got to tell you

  1244. if you're the church

1245. that God has called you

  1246. to be

  1247. and you're going to

  1248. stand on biblical

  1249. principles

1250. the people in the world

1251. are not always going to

  1252. like everything

  1253. you got to say

1254. there are going to be

  1255. times that the world

1256. is not going to like

  1257. your pastor

  1258. or your staff

  1259. or you

  1260. because of your

  1261. standing on abortion

  1262. or about

  1263. homosexuality

  1264. or about

  1265. transgender

  1266. situations

  1267. about alcohol

  1268. and drugs

  1269. and I could just

  1270. go on and on

  1271. and on and on

  1272. many people

  1273. when they hear

  1274. the word of God

  1275. preach

  1276. are going to be

  1277. offended by it

  1278. and they're going to

  1279. be angry with you

  1280. it's one thing

  1281. for them to be

  1282. offended

  1283. it's one thing

  1284. for them to be

  1285. angry

  1286. and it's another

  1287. thing for you

  1288. to give them

  1289. just cause

  1290. and some

  1291. believers

  1292. some ministers

  1293. they live such

  1294. unscrupulous lives

  1295. that when people

  1296. see them

  1297. on the outside

  1298. they discredit

  1299. their testimony

  1300. because they say

  1301. man that guy

  1302. comes in the

  1303. restaurant

  1304. and he's just

  1305. rude

  1306. he's just

  1307. he's just

  1308. rude

  1309. may that never

  1310. be said about

  1311. anybody here

  1312. at First Baptist

  1313. Church of Pickens

  1314. when I was

  1315. serving in

  1316. Statesville

  1317. there was

  1318. a time where

  1319. I was asked

  1320. to serve as

  1321. chairman of

  1322. this group

  1323. that was

  1324. going to

  1325. fight a

  1326. liquor issue

  1327. in our town

  1328. and I had

  1329. to go down

  1330. to the

  1331. chamber of

  1332. commerce

  1333. because the

  1334. guy who

  1335. was leading

  1336. the fight

  1337. for this

  1338. liquor thing

  1339. was the

  1340. president of

  1341. the chamber

  1342. in Statesville

  1343. North Carolina

  1344. and so when I

  1345. walked into his

  1346. office for a

  1347. preliminary meeting

  1348. he said now

  1349. you're the guy

  1350. at Western Amity

  1351. right

  1352. and I said

  1353. yes sir I am

  1354. and he said

  1355. the guy who

  1356. was your

  1357. predecessor

  1358. was Jake

  1359. Honeycutt

  1360. wasn't it

  1361. I mentioned Jake

  1362. a few weeks

  1363. ago to y'all

  1364. and he said

  1365. I said yes

  1366. and he said

  1367. you know

  1368. I don't know

  1369. if you know

  1370. this or not

  1371. but Jake

  1372. and I

  1373. locked it up

  1374. like you

  1375. and I

  1376. didn't

  1377. ready to

  1378. lock it

  1379. up

  1380. about 10

  1381. years ago

  1382. over the

  1383. issue of

  1384. liquor

  1385. and I said

  1386. yeah that's

  1387. what I hear

  1388. and he said

  1389. I'll tell you

  1390. something

  1391. even though

  1392. he and I

  1393. went toe

  1394. to toe

  1395. and nose

  1396. to nose

  1397. and it

  1398. got hot

  1399. sometimes

  1400. he said

  1401. I hope

  1402. you're as

  1403. nice a guy

  1404. as he was

  1405. because he

  1406. said I'm

  1407. going to

  1408. tell you

  1409. something

  1410. I don't

  1411. have anything

  1412. but good

  1413. things to

  1414. say about

  1415. that guy

  1416. he said

  1417. man he

  1418. was a man

  1419. of character

  1420. and a man

  1421. who is gracious

  1422. and a man

  1423. who is loving

  1424. and I want to

  1425. tell you something

  1426. that's how it

  1427. ought to be

  1428. with every one

  1429. of us in

  1430. this room

  1431. we might have

  1432. to disagree

  1433. with somebody

  1434. we don't

  1435. ever have

  1436. to be

  1437. disagreeable

  1438. do we

  1439. we ought

  1440. to be

  1441. people

  1442. whose

  1443. lives

  1444. are found

  1445. in favor

  1446. with the

  1447. world

  1448. and then

  1449. there's

  1450. one last

  1451. thing

  1452. and I

  1453. close

  1454. they

  1455. partnered

  1456. together

  1457. in getting

  1458. out the

  1459. gospel

  1460. look at

  1461. verse 47

  1462. I love

  1463. this

  1464. and every

  1465. day

  1466. the Lord

  1467. added to

  1468. those

  1469. added to

  1470. them

  1471. rather

  1472. those

  1473. who

  1474. were

  1475. being

  1476. saved

  1477. can you

  1478. imagine

  1479. that

  1480. every

  1481. day

  1482. somebody

  1483. was being

  1484. saved

  1485. you know

  1486. there are

  1487. churches

  1488. right here

  1489. in Pickens

  1490. I'm not

  1491. making this

  1492. up

  1493. who in the

  1494. course of a

  1495. year

  1496. they never

  1497. baptized

  1498. anybody

  1499. all across

  1500. the state

  1501. of South

  1502. Carolina

  1503. there are

  1504. lots of

  1505. churches

  1506. that don't

  1507. baptize

  1508. a single

  1509. person

  1510. in the

  1511. course

  1512. of a

  1513. year

  1514. I know

  1515. without even

  1516. seeing the

  1517. records that

  1518. during these

  1519. two years

  1520. of COVID

  1521. fewer people

  1522. have been

  1523. baptized in

  1524. our Baptist

  1525. churches

  1526. than probably

  1527. in the last

  1528. hundred years

  1529. there's no

  1530. question that

  1531. COVID has

  1532. kept us from

  1533. being as

  1534. aggressive in

  1535. evangelism as

  1536. we were at

  1537. one time

  1538. but I'm

  1539. going to tell you

  1540. something

  1541. if this

  1542. becomes a

  1543. way of

  1544. life for

  1545. us

  1546. and we

  1547. just settle

  1548. in and say

  1549. you know

  1550. what

  1551. it's okay

  1552. that we

  1553. just minister

  1554. to our

  1555. own

  1556. and that we

  1557. not take

  1558. the gospel

  1559. out to the

  1560. nations

  1561. only take

  1562. them

  1563. we will

  1564. have

  1565. forfeited

  1566. our right

  1567. to be

  1568. called

  1569. church

  1570. we'll be

  1571. nothing more

  1572. than a

  1573. sacred

  1574. society

  1575. of secret

  1576. snobs

  1577. do you

  1578. understand

  1579. that

  1580. the church's

  1581. mission

  1582. is clear

  1583. cut

  1584. and that

  1585. mission is

  1586. to take

  1587. the gospel

  1588. to the

  1589. nations

  1590. as soon as

  1591. you're a new

  1592. pastor on

  1593. board I

  1594. hope you

  1595. quickly will

  1596. develop a

  1597. strategy where

  1598. you'll say

  1599. let's have a

  1600. strategy for

  1601. reaching

  1602. Pickens for

  1603. Christ

  1604. and then you'll

  1605. have a strategy

  1606. about how do

  1607. we influence

  1608. Pickens County

  1609. and Greenville

  1610. County for

  1611. Christ

  1612. and how do

  1613. we get the

  1614. gospel across

  1615. the state

  1616. and into the

  1617. nation

  1618. all 50

  1619. states

  1620. and how can

  1621. we be a

  1622. part of

  1623. bringing the

  1624. world to

  1625. Christ

  1626. how can we

  1627. give the

  1628. gospel to

  1629. the Ukraine

  1630. and to

  1631. Uganda

  1632. and to

  1633. places we've

  1634. never been

  1635. and may

  1636. never go

  1637. that's the

  1638. mission he's

  1639. given us

  1640. and if we

  1641. settle for

  1642. anything less

  1643. than that

  1644. we can be

  1645. good people

  1646. and having a

  1647. good time

  1648. and doing

  1649. some good

  1650. stuff

  1651. but I want

  1652. to tell you

  1653. something

  1654. you're not

  1655. a church

  1656. you're just

  1657. not a church

  1658. and I hope

  1659. you'll never

  1660. ever satisfy

  1661. to just be

  1662. a bunch of

  1663. good folk

  1664. who maybe

  1665. even love

  1666. the Lord

  1667. who are

  1668. looking

  1669. to him

  1670. to save

  1671. them

  1672. but have

  1673. no regard

  1674. for people

  1675. in the world

  1676. who don't

  1677. know Christ

  1678. let's bow

  1679. together in

  1680. prayer

  1681. Father

  1682. I pray this

  1683. morning that

  1684. you would

  1685. convince us

  1686. leadership

  1687. staff

  1688. members

  1689. alike

  1690. that this

  1691. is the

  1692. pattern

  1693. that we're

  1694. to follow

  1695. we don't

  1696. have to

  1697. reinvent the

  1698. wheel

  1699. Lord

  1700. we just

  1701. have to

  1702. get on

  1703. board

  1704. with what

  1705. you've

  1706. already

  1707. told us

  1708. in scripture

  1709. we ought

  1710. to be

  1711. about

  1712. and I

  1713. pray God

  1714. that we'd

  1715. always hold

  1716. this standard

  1717. up before

  1718. ourselves

  1719. we'd go

  1720. back and

  1721. check from

  1722. time to

  1723. time and

  1724. say are we

  1725. doing those

  1726. things that

  1727. really the

  1728. church is

  1729. called to do

  1730. are we getting

  1731. out the gospel

  1732. are we discipling

  1733. the lost

  1734. are we

  1735. praying

  1736. are we

  1737. ministering

  1738. are we

  1739. sharing

  1740. our goods

  1741. with others

  1742. please oh

  1743. God

  1744. I pray you'd

  1745. make First

  1746. Baptist Church

  1747. Pickens the

  1748. strongest in

  1749. the days to

  1750. come it's

  1751. ever been in

  1752. this wonderful

  1753. history bless

  1754. them give them

  1755. souls for their

  1756. labor it's our

  1757. prayer in your

  1758. name amen
