  1. If you have your Bibles, look with me to Mark chapter 10, and we're going to read verses 17 through 22.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  2. And I'm going to preach about the attitude of a true believer.

  3. Before we get into that, let me just say next Sunday, I hope you'll be here.

  4. I think you'll want to be here.

  5. I'm going to preach on heaven, and I always love doing that.

  6. It's just one of those messages that leaves you feeling great.

  7. And so I hope you'll come and be with us as we think about heaven next Sunday morning.

  8. And while you're thinking about that, next Sunday is Friend Day.

  9. We're going to invite our friends this week.

  10. We've had an emphasis every week for the last four weeks.

  11. And this coming week, the emphasis is on calling a friend, phoning a friend, and asking them to come to be with you.

  12. That can be a family member, a neighbor, somebody you work with.

  13. But just try to bring someone with you to church next week.

  14. I don't have a lot of friends in this area that I know, you know, other than you folk who are already coming here.

  15. And so it's going to be hard for me, but I'm going to try to bring a friend next week as well.

  16. So I hope you'll get on the phone and call some folk, and we'll have a good crowd next week as we come to think about heaven.

  17. I want to talk this morning about the attitude of a true believer.

  18. And let me tell you what I mean by that.

  19. I'm thinking about when a person comes to know Christ, what does their attitude regarding the gospel have to be in order for them to truly believe on the Lord Jesus Christ?

  20. I see folks who have this notion in mind, well, you know what?

  21. This is just totally on me.

  22. And so I can understand the gospels.

  23. I hear the gospels.

  24. I kind of believe them.

  25. I believe there was a Jesus.

  26. I believe he came and he died on the cross and he rose from the dead.

  27. Don't have any problem with that.

  28. And I kind of believe that there's life after death.

  29. Not altogether sure, but I kind of think there is.

  30. But, you know, right now I'm in the middle of life and I'm having a great time.

  31. And I'm just not ready to settle down and become a believer.

  32. So what I'm going to do is this.

  33. I'm going to file all that stuff away in the back of my mind.

  34. And then when I get closer to the end, when I get out of that time where I'm going to sow my wild oats and I'm ready to settle down,

  35. I've got kids and grandkids maybe, and maybe I'm even near death.

  36. I'll just at that point when it's more convenient and more in keeping what I want to do in my life,

  37. I'll give my life to Jesus.

  38. But I'm not ready to do it today.

  39. I'm just going to put all that stuff on the back burner.

  40. And they kind of have this notion, I can just come to Christ anytime I jolly well feel like coming to Christ.

  41. So, man, if they tell me I've got cancer and I've got two months to live, that'll be a good time to get saved, right?

  42. I want you to know I think there are folk who genuinely, genuinely, I'm not just saying this,

  43. genuinely come to Christ in the last moments of their life on their deathbed.

  44. They come to the Lord Jesus and they're sincerely saved.

  45. But I want to tell you something.

  46. I've got a problem with a person who knows about Jesus all their life and thinks, you know,

  47. I can just put this off until it's convenient time.

  48. I don't think that's the kind of attitude someone has who genuinely trusts Jesus.

  49. And I want to show you that.

  50. It's not a matter of what I think, what my feelings are, what my opinion is.

  51. It's a matter of what the Scripture tells us.

  52. And so I'm going to show you two stories this morning.

  53. One of these stories, everybody, virtually everybody here,

  54. unless you've not had a chance to read the Scripture much,

  55. virtually everybody here knows this one story, the story we're going to begin with.

  56. The second story is just a single verse.

  57. It's a story wrapped up in just one verse.

  58. It's a parable that Jesus gives.

  59. And to be honest with you, it's one of those parables that preachers often overlook.

  60. We don't often turn to that and say, I'm going to preach a whole message on this.

  61. We usually just throw it in at some point in a sermon, okay?

  62. But this morning, I want you to know, it's the real focus of our message today.

  63. So go with me to Mark chapter 10, and let's begin our reading in verse 17.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  64. And I'm just going to read this story and then make some comments,

  65. and then we'll look at that other one, and we'll be done.

  66. Look with me to verse 17.

  67. Now, you may or may not know this story right off the get-go.

  68. If you look down at the heading above where we just read,

  69. probably your Bible has something like this, the rich young ruler.

  70. And you don't read that he's a ruler in this particular passage,

  71. but if you look at all the synoptic Gospels,

  72. you'll find that one Gospel writer says he was a ruler,

  73. and then Luke says he had great wealth,

  74. and here we're going to see he had great possessions as well.

  75. So here's what we know about this guy right out of the gate.

  76. He's a young fellow.

  77. He's a guy who's a ruler, which means he enjoyed a certain fair amount of popularity.

  78. He has some status in the community, no doubt.

  79. And he's a guy who's got a lot of money.

  80. So when you think of all those things,

  81. and you picture this guy coming running up to Jesus,

  82. here's Jesus and his disciples,

  83. and they're going on this journey,

  84. and right in the middle of their leaving to go on this journey,

  85. this guy comes running up out of the crowd,

  86. and he just kneels right there at Jesus' feet,

  87. and he looks up and he says,

  88. what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  89. You've got to kind of say, man, didn't see that coming.

  90. It's not the kind of person you typically even read about in the Gospels

  91. who comes running up to Jesus and kneels

  92. and asks such a question, especially as directly as this man asked it.

  93. You find on another occasion a guy by the name of Jairus,

  94. he's a big shot.

  95. He's the leader of the synagogue in Capernaum.

  96. He comes up, he runs, he kneels, does the same thing,

  97. but you find out there he's an older guy who has a daughter

  98. who's at death's door.

  99. And so he's, I get it.

  100. I understand why.

  101. He'd come and beg Jesus for a miracle.

  102. We see of others who come, and they ask Jesus,

  103. but always they've got in the back of their mind,

  104. there's something they need.

  105. This man's not asking for any kind of physical miracle.

  106. He's not asking for any kind of help in the physical realm.

  107. He's got that covered.

  108. You understand?

  109. He doesn't need financial help.

  110. He doesn't need a physical miracle.

  111. He doesn't need anything from anybody else.

  112. He's wanting spiritual help.

  113. So it makes it all the more unusual.

  114. And look at the question he asked Jesus.

  115. Master, tell me, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  116. Well, that's a great question, right?

  117. Can I tell you, for years and years and years,

  118. in fact, even to this day, but especially when I pastored,

  119. every day I'd pray.

  120. When I'd get in my office, I'd begin the day,

  121. and I'd ask the Lord.

  122. I'd look over my calendar and say,

  123. Lord, would you help me with this and this and this?

  124. And I'd always say, Lord, would you lead somebody here today

  125. just right off the streets?

  126. They'll just pass by our buildings,

  127. and they'll just see our sign out front,

  128. and they'll just come in here,

  129. and they'll just want to know how can they be saved?

  130. Would you just lead somebody to me today

  131. who's looking to know Christ?

  132. I'm sure lots of you in this room have prayed

  133. that kind of prayer as well.

  134. Lord, just lead me to somebody who's looking to be saved.

  135. I want to tell you, in the evangelical world,

  136. this guy lobs Jesus a softball, right?

  137. I mean, it's the evangelical softball of the year.

  138. Could you tell me, Son of God, who better?

  139. Could you tell me, how could I inherit the kingdom of God?

  140. What can I do?

  141. So you know what you would expect, don't you?

  142. That Jesus just kind of goes in the wind up

  143. and all right and pow, knocks it right out of the stadium.

  144. That's what you would anticipate.

  145. But that's not what Jesus does.

  146. I mean, I'd have been on him, to be honest, like ugly on an ape.

  147. If he had said that to me,

  148. I'd have just jumped in, gone right to the Roman road,

  149. or I'm not going to get him lost again

  150. because he already knows he's lost.

  151. He wants to be saved.

  152. He wouldn't have come to me

  153. unless he knew something was lacking in his life.

  154. He would have never raised that kind of question.

  155. So I'm just going to go jump right in and say,

  156. here's how you can come to know God.

  157. But that's not what Jesus does.

  158. I've got to be honest with you.

  159. If you didn't already read this story,

  160. you'd never guess what he says.

  161. Look at Jesus' response, if you will, to that question.

  162. Verse 18.

  163. Why do you call me good?

  164. Why?

  165. I mean, if I'd been one of his disciples,

  166. and I'd been standing there, and I'd heard that.

  167. I mean, this is what we've been looking for all the time,

  168. somebody to come, and they want to have their hearts right,

  169. and they want to go to heaven.

  170. They want to inherit the kingdom of God.

  171. And he says, good teacher, good master.

  172. It's not an insult.

  173. It's a good thing, right?

  174. And Jesus says, well, now, tell me.

  175. Why do you call me good?

  176. I'd be going, huh?

  177. What?

  178. What are you doing, Jesus?

  179. Don't let him get away.

  180. I mean, give him the gospel.

  181. Jesus says, why do you call me good?

  182. Can I tell you?

  183. It was a wonderful thing to say,

  184. because Jesus knew what's going on in this guy's mind,

  185. and in his heart, and how he's thinking.

  186. Did he think that Jesus was God?

  187. Absolutely not.

  188. There's not a question in my mind.

  189. He believed that this man, Jesus, was God.

  190. He thought just what he said.

  191. He was a good teacher.

  192. He was a good man.

  193. And Jesus wants to capitalize on that

  194. and send him a message about what's going on in his own life,

  195. in the man's life.

  196. We all use that expression, don't we?

  197. We say, he's a good guy.

  198. She's a good guy.

  199. You go to a funeral, you always hear the preacher say,

  200. he was a good man.

  201. She was a good woman.

  202. And they're not lying about that.

  203. They mean that compared to a lot of folk,

  204. they're really a good, good, good person.

  205. Or even if you look at them individually,

  206. he treated his family well, she treated her family well.

  207. They were good citizens.

  208. They were good members of First Baptist Church.

  209. They're good people.

  210. But notice what Jesus says in response to that.

  211. Why do you call me good, Jesus asked him.

  212. No one is good but one, and that is God.

  213. No one is good but God.

  214. And you may be wondering, well, why did Jesus pick that apart?

  215. Why did Jesus make a point of that?

  216. Because he knows what this guy's thinking, not about him, Jesus,

  217. but about himself.

  218. When he calls Jesus good, he's not saying you're good as in perfect, as in God.

  219. He's saying you're good as in I'm good.

  220. You're good.

  221. You're good.

  222. We're all pretty good.

  223. We have our good moments.

  224. But Jesus is going to show this man something about himself from this point going forward

  225. that he's not prepared to see, and I don't know that he ever saw.

  226. I don't know that he got it, to be honest.

  227. I think he walked off, and he never understood what Jesus was saying.

  228. And here's the point Jesus is making.

  229. Look at what he says next.

  230. You know the commandments.

  231. Do not murder.

  232. Do not commit adultery.

  233. Do not steal.

  234. Do not bear false witness.

  235. Do not defraud.

  236. Honor your father and your mother.

  237. You know what he's done?

  238. Jesus has now skipped to the Ten Commandments.

  239. He's gone to Exodus chapter 20 and verse 12 and following.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  240. And he cited six of the Ten Commandments.

  241. And get this now.

  242. These six he cited are the six that theologians call commandments on the horizontal plane.

  243. He's omitted the first four, which are commandments on the vertical plane.

  244. And by vertical plane, I mean this.

  245. They're the ones that relate to our relationship with God.

  246. Keep the Sabbath day and keep it holy.

  247. He says,

  248. Worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

  249. Don't have any graven.

  250. He skipped all those.

  251. And he's gone to these that are on the horizontal plane that deal with man's relationship with other men.

  252. And so Jesus says,

  253. Well, you call me good.

  254. There's no one good but God.

  255. You know what you need to do.

  256. You need to keep the Ten Commandments.

  257. And he says,

  258. How you relate to men.

  259. Is that okay?

  260. Have you been keeping those about how you relate to men?

  261. And you know what the man says?

  262. Look at his response.

  263. The man says,

  264. Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.

  265. Well, yes, Master.

  266. Of course.

  267. I'm a good Jewish boy.

  268. I've maintained all these commandments.

  269. Now, I want to just show you something.

  270. Most of us in this room,

  271. if you say to them,

  272. say to folk,

  273. You been keeping the Ten Commandments?

  274. What do you think?

  275. We think to ourselves.

  276. Well, sure.

  277. Yeah.

  278. Right.

  279. Right.

  280. But have you?

  281. Have you?

  282. You ever gossiped?

  283. You broke that one.

  284. Ever lied?

  285. Ever lied?

  286. Ever failed to report some cash you got?

  287. On your income tax?

  288. Nobody knew about?

  289. Ever hurt somebody?

  290. Ever stole anything?

  291. And on and on and on.

  292. You see, we think,

  293. Well, if I just don't break it all the time,

  294. I'm not guilty of breaking it.

  295. But you know what James says?

  296. James says,

  297. If you break it in one point,

  298. you're guilty of breaking it all.

  299. You get that?

  300. If you're guilty at one point,

  301. you're guilty of breaking all of them.

  302. And Jesus knew,

  303. and that's the reason he makes such a big deal

  304. about this thing of being good.

  305. Buddy,

  306. you're delusional.

  307. You're not as good as you think you are.

  308. Right?

  309. And none of us are.

  310. We convince ourselves,

  311. try to convince ourselves

  312. that we really are great, good people,

  313. and we just,

  314. we're not that bad.

  315. I mean, I'm not,

  316. I'm not the worst guy in the world,

  317. and so I'm pretty good, right?

  318. Jesus says,

  319. No, truth is,

  320. you're not.

  321. You're a sinner,

  322. just like everybody else.

  323. And so,

  324. you're not that good.

  325. Well,

  326. Jesus is going to tell him what he needs to do.

  327. Look at what he tells him he needs to do.

  328. Look at the very next verse.

  329. This is going to shock some of you.

  330. Then looking at him,

  331. Jesus loved him.

  332. He's not angry with him.

  333. He's not put out with him.

  334. He loves him.

  335. You lack one thing.

  336. Go sell all you have

  337. and give to the poor,

  338. and you will have treasure.

  339. Look at that word.

  340. Treasure.

  341. I want you just to remember it for a minute.

  342. You will have treasure in heaven.

  343. Then come follow me.

  344. Now, this guy wants eternal life.

  345. He wants eternal life.

  346. You know why he's coming to Jesus?

  347. Because he knows he doesn't have it.

  348. He knows deep in his heart

  349. when he looks at his life,

  350. he's got a lot of stuff.

  351. He's got material things.

  352. He's got popularity.

  353. He's got status.

  354. He's got the respect of the community.

  355. But what I don't have is God.

  356. And I believe this all over my heart.

  357. God has given us an ability

  358. when we'll get real honest with ourselves

  359. and stop being delusional

  360. and look inward,

  361. we know if we're right with God or not.

  362. Doesn't matter what our parents think,

  363. what our pastor thinks,

  364. what our deacons think,

  365. what our wife or husband thinks,

  366. we know if we're really right with God.

  367. I think most every one of you,

  368. if not every one of you,

  369. right now under the sound of my voice,

  370. you know today,

  371. regardless what anybody else in this room thinks,

  372. you know whether or not

  373. you are really right with God,

  374. whether or not you're really ready to die

  375. and stand before God in judgment

  376. this very moment.

  377. And that young man took inventory of his life

  378. and even though he says,

  379. I'm keeping all these commandments

  380. and I want you to know,

  381. I think he is a moral guy.

  382. And I think for the most part,

  383. he did keep all those commandments.

  384. I'm not saying he,

  385. you know,

  386. he was a rotten sinner.

  387. I'm just saying,

  388. he was a sinner.

  389. But I believe this,

  390. when he looked at his life,

  391. he knew this,

  392. there's something missing

  393. or he would never have come

  394. and knelt before Jesus

  395. and said,

  396. tell me,

  397. what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  398. And I want to tell you,

  399. that's where some of you in this room today,

  400. even though your name's on the roll of this church,

  401. that's where you are.

  402. You're perfectly honest,

  403. you know that's where,

  404. because I'm not ready to meet God.

  405. When I was a young man,

  406. living in Anderson,

  407. another young guy who was my age at that time

  408. and good friend,

  409. he went on to be a pastor of church here in South Carolina,

  410. a large church and just a good, good guy.

  411. But he looked at me one day,

  412. we were in a locker room and he said,

  413. Ralph, do you think we're ready to meet God?

  414. And it shocked me when he said,

  415. and I turned to him and I said,

  416. I know I'm not.

  417. I was in church every Sunday.

  418. I'd been baptized.

  419. My name was on the roll.

  420. I was a leader among the youth.

  421. And I knew I wasn't ready to meet God.

  422. I knew I'm not right with God.

  423. And I just knew that.

  424. Innately, I knew that.

  425. And I think this young man,

  426. he knows that I'm not right with God.

  427. So Jesus wants him to see where he really,

  428. but he don't think he's that bad.

  429. He's just not right with God.

  430. So Jesus says,

  431. here's what I want you to do.

  432. If you want to be right with me,

  433. go sell everything.

  434. Every last thing.

  435. And give it to the poor

  436. and come take up the cross

  437. and follow me.

  438. And you will find treasure in heaven.

  439. The young man's thinking to himself,

  440. I got treasure right now.

  441. I got lots of treasure.

  442. I'm not hurting for money.

  443. And this is what I know.

  444. And that thing you talk about,

  445. eternal life that I've asked you about,

  446. I'm wanting to hedge my bets

  447. in case it really is so,

  448. but I'm not certain it's so.

  449. And you see,

  450. that's the problem with some of us

  451. in this room again today.

  452. We're never going to say that out loud in church.

  453. We're just all going to say,

  454. yeah, we believe that the heaven's out there

  455. after this life is over.

  456. But the truth of the matter is,

  457. we're not so sure.

  458. And that's why we hedge our bets

  459. by making sure we keep holding on to this life.

  460. Because we know this,

  461. I know what I got here.

  462. I can see my car,

  463. I can see my house,

  464. I can see my family,

  465. I can see my relationships,

  466. my friends,

  467. I can see my money in the bank account,

  468. and I can breathe,

  469. I'm alive now.

  470. But once I breathe my last

  471. and the doctor says he's dead,

  472. and he put me in the cash,

  473. I don't know if I'm going to live then or not.

  474. I hope so.

  475. I think so.

  476. Maybe so.

  477. But that's uncertain.

  478. So Jesus wanted to point out

  479. how uncertain it is to him,

  480. and he says,

  481. here's what you do.

  482. You go sell everything you have

  483. and come take up the cross,

  484. and you'll find treasure in heaven,

  485. and you follow me,

  486. and you'll get eternal life.

  487. Now,

  488. we're just going to get eternal life

  489. because he sold what he had?

  490. No.

  491. Because it doesn't come to us by works.

  492. But by his selling everything,

  493. he was indicating Jesus,

  494. I have complete confidence in you

  495. and in God,

  496. and I believe there's life after death,

  497. and I want that.

  498. And that was the importance

  499. of his selling everything.

  500. Now, I want to tell you,

  501. I've heard some preachers and lay people

  502. get this all mixed up and all wrong.

  503. I've heard preachers even say,

  504. well, you see,

  505. he really didn't have to sell everything.

  506. Jesus just wanted to see

  507. if he was willing to sell everything.

  508. There's not a shred of evidence

  509. to hold to that idea.

  510. I believe Jesus meant

  511. go sell everything

  512. and come take up the cross

  513. and follow me,

  514. and you'll have life in heaven.

  515. And I'm going to show you

  516. why I believe that

  517. because of what Jesus said

  518. on yet another occasion.

  519. Before we see that,

  520. though,

  521. look at the man's reaction.

  522. Look at verse 22.

  523. But he was stunned

  524. at this demand.

  525. I love

  526. how the Holman translates that.

  527. I don't know what your translation says,

  528. but the Holman says,

  529. but he was stunned

  530. at that demand.

  531. You know what it is

  532. to be stunned, right?

  533. You're not anticipating something.

  534. It takes you back.

  535. It takes your breath away.

  536. You just,

  537. what?

  538. I mean,

  539. usually when we're stunned,

  540. what?

  541. We're stunned by news.

  542. We're stunned by something

  543. that happens in our life.

  544. It's not what we thought

  545. was going to happen.

  546. This young man,

  547. what was he thinking

  548. when he said,

  549. tell me,

  550. how can I have eternal life?

  551. I'll tell you what

  552. I think he was thinking.

  553. He was saying,

  554. Jesus would say,

  555. get more faithful

  556. to the Son of God.

  557. You got to stop

  558. doing those few bad things

  559. you're doing.

  560. You got to give some money.

  561. You got to give 10%,

  562. 20%,

  563. 25%.

  564. Got to make a huge donation.

  565. Got to start a ministry.

  566. Got to get involved in something.

  567. And I believe with all my heart

  568. that man would have done that.

  569. Whatever Jesus asked him

  570. that seemed reasonable to him,

  571. okay,

  572. that's what I'll do.

  573. But when Jesus said,

  574. sell everything,

  575. everything.

  576. What did you say?

  577. Huh?

  578. Everything?

  579. That's stunning.

  580. Just as stunning

  581. as it would be

  582. to any of you

  583. in this room.

  584. If Jesus looked at you

  585. and said,

  586. you want eternal life?

  587. Here's what?

  588. Give it all up.

  589. Your house,

  590. your cars,

  591. your family,

  592. your job,

  593. your 401k,

  594. give it all away.

  595. He's stunned by it.

  596. And so here's what he does.

  597. Look at the last verse

  598. in this passage.

  599. He was stunned at this demand

  600. and he went away grieving

  601. because he had many

  602. possessions.

  603. Simply say,

  604. here's what he does.

  605. He just looked at the ledger sheet

  606. and says,

  607. here's all I got

  608. and here's what Jesus

  609. is offering.

  610. I wanted that

  611. as a backup plan

  612. but I got this

  613. and this is real.

  614. I know it's real

  615. because I'm seeing it right now.

  616. I'm living this.

  617. Yeah,

  618. can't give up this

  619. for that.

  620. I wanted it.

  621. I don't want it that bad.

  622. You follow what I'm saying?

  623. Now go with me

  624. to one other verse

  625. and work through.

  626. Look with me

  627. to Matthew chapter 13

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  628. and verse 44.

  629. And here's what it says

  630. and I'm going to read it

  631. just a phrase at a time

  632. so just hang with me.

  633. Don't jump ahead too much.

  634. The kingdom of heaven.

  635. Jesus is going to give us

  636. a parable.

  637. The kingdom of heaven.

  638. And then he's going to say

  639. here's what it's like

  640. because he does that a lot

  641. in the Gospel of Matthew.

  642. Now look up and listen.

  643. This is really important.

  644. You'll get this

  645. if you don't hear

  646. what I'm saying.

  647. The kingdom of heaven

  648. in the Gospel of Matthew

  649. is not talking about

  650. a physical kingdom.

  651. Geographical barriers

  652. and limitations

  653. and boundaries.

  654. He's not talking about

  655. that kind of kingdom.

  656. When he says

  657. the kingdom of heaven

  658. in the Gospel of Matthew

  659. or the kingdom of God

  660. you'll read that as well.

  661. He's saying to us

  662. here's the manner

  663. in which God rules.

  664. Here's how God rules.

  665. That's what he's saying to us.

  666. Here's how God operates.

  667. Here's how God rules.

  668. Here's how God reigns.

  669. He says

  670. the kingdom of heaven

  671. is like

  672. a treasure.

  673. You like that word?

  674. Like a treasure.

  675. Jesus told this other man

  676. this same man

  677. in the story we just read

  678. you go sell everything

  679. and come take up the cross

  680. and follow me

  681. and you'll have treasure

  682. in heaven.

  683. So now he talks

  684. about treasure.

  685. He says

  686. the kingdom of heaven

  687. the way God rules

  688. is like

  689. a treasure.

  690. You ever wonder

  691. what it'd be like

  692. to find a treasure?

  693. Don't you like movies

  694. where they're searching

  695. for a treasure?

  696. I like this.

  697. Indiana Jones.

  698. Didn't y'all see

  699. Indiana Jones

  700. 100 years ago

  701. when it came out?

  702. Didn't you love that movie?

  703. I mean

  704. he's searching

  705. so hard

  706. for the Ark of the Covenant

  707. in one of those movies.

  708. I mean

  709. he's willing

  710. to go through

  711. anything

  712. through fire

  713. and snakes

  714. and near death experiences

  715. to put his life

  716. on the line

  717. because he wants

  718. that treasure

  719. that no one else

  720. has found.

  721. Well that's what

  722. treasure is.

  723. It's what floats

  724. your boat.

  725. It's whatever

  726. you prize

  727. more than anything

  728. else in the world.

  729. And Jesus says

  730. the kingdom of God

  731. is like a

  732. treasure.

  733. Then he says

  734. buried in

  735. a field.

  736. You see that movie

  737. The Pirates of the Caribbean?

  738. They're looking for

  739. treasure

  740. and it's

  741. buried out in the Caribbean

  742. and they're searching

  743. for it.

  744. Well this

  745. treasure is buried

  746. in a field.

  747. Let me just take

  748. the time out

  749. and tell you about

  750. my little nephew.

  751. My nephew

  752. David

  753. my sister's boy

  754. she's got two boys

  755. they're both preachers

  756. Daniel and David

  757. one of them's in Texas

  758. at Waco

  759. one of them's in

  760. Wichita, Kansas

  761. David's in Wichita, Kansas

  762. he's the younger

  763. when he was always

  764. short for his age

  765. and just full of energy

  766. wild imagination

  767. brilliant

  768. brilliant

  769. kid

  770. and when he was

  771. in that

  772. five, six

  773. and seven

  774. year old stage

  775. he went through

  776. about three years

  777. of living in

  778. a fantasy world

  779. where he was

  780. this character

  781. at one time

  782. and this character

  783. another time

  784. he went through

  785. about six characters

  786. I'm not kidding

  787. my wife could tell you

  788. my whole family

  789. could tell you

  790. this story

  791. and not one word

  792. I'm going to tell you

  793. is made up

  794. this is all truth

  795. okay

  796. he would stay

  797. in character

  798. 24 hours a day

  799. seven days a week

  800. until he got out

  801. of that character

  802. he did it for

  803. months

  804. on end

  805. he was Clint Eastwood

  806. at one time

  807. got him in some trouble

  808. he used a little

  809. profanity

  810. one time

  811. his mom about

  812. killed him

  813. over it

  814. but he became

  815. he became Clint Eastwood

  816. he'd wear the guns

  817. he'd have the hat

  818. he'd talk like him

  819. he'd look like him

  820. he'd put the straw

  821. in his mouth

  822. like him

  823. right

  824. yeah

  825. he was Clint Eastwood

  826. in his mind

  827. he was a farmer

  828. at one time

  829. wore bib overalls

  830. straw hat

  831. he went through

  832. a farmer phase

  833. he was a military

  834. officer at one time

  835. went through all that

  836. he had a bunch

  837. of these different

  838. characters

  839. one of his characters

  840. was a pirate

  841. he had a little patch

  842. over his eye

  843. had a pirate's hat

  844. and he'd just do this

  845. I mean they couldn't

  846. get him out of it

  847. he'd go to school

  848. he was a pirate at school

  849. he was just

  850. wherever he was

  851. wherever he was

  852. that's how he was

  853. you know

  854. well when he was

  855. in the pirate phase

  856. my dad lived

  857. across the street

  858. from my sister

  859. and so my dad

  860. just loves

  861. adores this boy

  862. because he's so much

  863. like my dad

  864. and so

  865. my dad would

  866. at night

  867. draw up these

  868. little maps

  869. he'd get out

  870. in the yard

  871. in the dark

  872. my dad would

  873. and he'd count

  874. off so many steps

  875. to the back

  876. of the house

  877. and then he'd

  878. turn right

  879. and go so many steps

  880. then he'd come

  881. to this tree

  882. and he'd see

  883. something about the tree

  884. and he'd go

  885. in another direction

  886. toward a neighbor's house

  887. and then he would

  888. come to a doghouse

  889. and turn left there

  890. and then he'd dig

  891. a hole about

  892. a foot and a half deep

  893. and he'd get a shoebox

  894. and put my mama's

  895. costume jewelry

  896. in that shoebox

  897. and he'd bury it

  898. then he'd go

  899. across the street

  900. to my nephew's house

  901. and he'd put

  902. a thing on the door

  903. like a pirate

  904. we'd expect to find

  905. and he'd come out

  906. the next morning

  907. and there'd be a map

  908. with hidden treasure

  909. in it

  910. the promise of hidden treasure

  911. so my nephew

  912. would spend the whole

  913. morning or afternoon

  914. out there

  915. traipsing through

  916. these different steps

  917. and he'd find that

  918. shoebox

  919. and he'd dig holes

  920. he'd miss it sometimes

  921. and he'd dig a hole

  922. and then he'd just

  923. leave that

  924. and go dig another

  925. hole somewhere

  926. right

  927. until he'd find

  928. that shoebox

  929. it was the coolest

  930. thing you ever saw

  931. so

  932. Jesus says

  933. the way God rules

  934. is like this

  935. it's like a treasure

  936. that

  937. is buried

  938. in a field

  939. that a man

  940. has found

  941. that really

  942. gets intriguing

  943. I mean

  944. he's found

  945. this treasure

  946. he spent

  947. all this time

  948. looking for it

  949. and finally

  950. he's found it

  951. and then he says

  952. a startling thing

  953. and

  954. reburied it

  955. what

  956. who goes

  957. looking for a treasure

  958. and once they

  959. find it

  960. they rebury

  961. it's like the

  962. pirates of the Caribbean

  963. they come up with this

  964. gold and silver

  965. and rings

  966. and all this

  967. and they say

  968. okay we found it

  969. and they throw it

  970. back in the ocean

  971. can't imagine that

  972. right

  973. or in Raiders of the Lost Ark

  974. that they find the ark

  975. and suddenly say

  976. well we found it

  977. let's just leave

  978. they don't do that

  979. but that's what

  980. Jesus says

  981. this guy does

  982. he looks and looks

  983. and looks for this treasure

  984. and he finds it

  985. and when he finds it

  986. he reburies it

  987. wait a second

  988. story's not over

  989. then

  990. in his joy

  991. he's so tickled

  992. he goes and sells

  993. everything he has

  994. well that's weird too

  995. isn't it

  996. he's found this treasure

  997. he reburies the treasure

  998. now he says

  999. I need to go home

  1000. and sell everything

  1001. I've got

  1002. and he goes home

  1003. and he gets out

1004. the deeds to his house

1005. and the deeds to his land

  1006. and if he'd had a title

1007. to his car in those days

1008. he'd have got his title

  1009. to his car

  1010. and he sells everything

  1011. he has so that

  1012. he's liquidated

  1013. his entire estate

  1014. what in the world

  1015. is he thinking

  1016. well

  1017. next verse tells us

  1018. and he goes

  1019. and buys

  1020. that

  1021. field

  1022. boy now

  1023. I get it

  1024. now I get it

  1025. you see

  1026. he knows

1027. if he takes this treasure

  1028. and he goes

  1029. and talks about it

  1030. somebody's going to come

  1031. and say

  1032. where'd you find

  1033. that treasure

  1034. well it's out here

  1035. on highway 9

  1036. and

  1037. wait a second

1038. you don't own any land

  1039. on highway 9

1040. that belongs to so and so

1041. and so what he does

  1042. he knows he wants

  1043. that field

  1044. he sells everything

  1045. he has

  1046. so he'll be prepared

1047. to pay the ultimate price

1048. and he goes to this man

  1049. who owns the field

  1050. and he says

  1051. what would you take

1052. for your piece of property

  1053. and the guy says

  1054. I don't know what you got

  1055. he says

1056. well I got this much

  1057. he says

  1058. that's what I'll sell it for

1059. and he buys this field

  1060. it cost him everything

  1061. when he's through

  1062. he doesn't own a thing

  1063. except the treasure

  1064. but he's so elated

  1065. over his purchase

  1066. it doesn't matter

  1067. because he's found

  1068. his treasure

  1069. he's gotten

  1070. what he wants

  1071. you get that?

  1072. do you get that?

  1073. the apostle Paul says

  1074. this in Philippians 3

  1075. 8

  1076. what is more

  1077. I consider

  1078. everything a loss

1079. because of the surpassing worth

  1080. of knowing Christ Jesus

  1081. my Lord

  1082. for whose sake

  1083. I have lost

  1084. all things

  1085. I consider

  1086. them garbage

  1087. that I may gain

  1088. Christ

1089. I'm going to tell you

1090. I'm going to tell you something folks

  1091. a lot of evangelists

  1092. and preachers

  1093. and people

  1094. got this notion

1095. of how you come to Jesus

  1096. all wrong

  1097. we almost act like

  1098. you're doing God a favor

  1099. would you please come

  1100. and receive Christ

1101. well what do I have to do

  1102. well

  1103. just pray this prayer

  1104. okay

  1105. I can do that

  1106. I'll pray

  1107. would you be baptized

  1108. yeah

  1109. I'll be baptized

  1110. maybe

  1111. and you've got

  1112. eternal life

  1113. and Jesus tells about

  1114. this man who comes

1115. and he's kind of like

  1116. he says

  1117. I want eternal life

1118. but I want it on my terms

  1119. he walks away sad

  1120. because he's not willing

  1121. to pay the price

  1122. but here's this guy

  1123. Jesus tells this parable

  1124. he says

1125. here's how it really is

  1126. when somebody comes

1127. to the kingdom of God

  1128. and how God

  1129. expects it to be

  1130. it's like a guy

1131. who wanders into a field

1132. and he finds this treasure

1133. and when he finds it

  1134. he's so enthralled

  1135. by this treasure

  1136. he so wants

  1137. what this treasure is

  1138. that everything else

  1139. is of no consequence

  1140. he doesn't care about

  1141. anything

  1142. he doesn't care about

  1143. his cars

  1144. doesn't care about

1145. his money in the bank

  1146. he doesn't care about

  1147. his house

  1148. he doesn't care about

  1149. I want that

  1150. I want that above

  1151. everything else

1152. and so what does he do

  1153. to get it

1154. means he has to rid

  1155. himself of everything else

1156. and he takes his money

  1157. from that which he's

  1158. liquidated

  1159. he goes

  1160. he buys that field

  1161. because that's all

  1162. that matters

  1163. anymore

  1164. to him

1165. you see I'm telling you

  1166. coming to Christ

  1167. doesn't do God a favor

1168. it gives you the gift

  1169. of eternal life

1170. and you should be so

  1171. enthralled by that

  1172. that nothing else

  1173. matters

  1174. just nothing else

  1175. matters

  1176. but that I'll live

  1177. eternally with God

  1178. when this is over

  1179. that's what's real

  1180. this is illusionary

  1181. illusionary

  1182. this just

  1183. is here today

1184. but it may be gone

  1185. tomorrow

  1186. it could be gone

  1187. before we get out

  1188. of this service

  1189. today

  1190. but that's what's real

  1191. when I was 14 years old

  1192. I was in

  1193. Varenas Heights

  1194. Baptist Church

  1195. my name was on

1196. the roll of the church

  1197. I was leader

  1198. among the youth

  1199. but I knew

  1200. I wasn't right

  1201. with God

1202. I knew that all along

  1203. I knew I wasn't a real

  1204. believer

  1205. I'd pray the prayer

  1206. the preacher led me

1207. to pray when I was

  1208. nine years old

  1209. he'd baptize me

  1210. dunk me

1211. but I knew some folk

  1212. who had a relationship

  1213. with him

  1214. and I knew I didn't

  1215. have that

  1216. and at 14

1217. I sat on the next

  1218. last row

  1219. of Varenas Heights

  1220. Baptist Church

  1221. and heard a gospel

  1222. message

  1223. and I knew that

1224. God wanted to save me

  1225. and I was resistant

  1226. because you see

1227. I want to tell you

  1228. I'm unusual

1229. I know this about myself

  1230. unusual in this sense

  1231. nothing special about me

  1232. but all my life

  1233. I've known

1234. what I wanted to do

  1235. all my life

  1236. from the time

  1237. I was

  1238. eight

  1239. nine years old

  1240. I had a plan

  1241. and that plan

  1242. was I was going

  1243. to West Point

1244. my dad was a career

  1245. soldier

  1246. and that's all

  1247. I ever talked about

  1248. anything about

  1249. West Point

  1250. I read

  1251. I just wanted

1252. to go to West Point

  1253. I just wanted

  1254. to be a soldier

  1255. I just wanted

  1256. to be an officer

  1257. in the army

  1258. that was going

  1259. to be my life

  1260. and so

  1261. what held me back

  1262. was this

  1263. and I can't explain

1264. this but I just knew

  1265. I somehow knew this

1266. that if I ever got

  1267. truly right with God

  1268. he would call me

  1269. to preach

  1270. I just knew that

  1271. and I didn't want

  1272. to do that

  1273. this is the last

1274. thing I wanted to do

  1275. I didn't even

  1276. particularly like

  1277. preachers to be honest

  1278. with you

  1279. even as a kid

  1280. I thought

  1281. they were a bunch

  1282. of sissies

  1283. the last thing

  1284. I wanted to do

  1285. was be a preacher

  1286. and so

  1287. I can remember

  1288. sitting right back

  1289. at the very

  1290. next last row

  1291. and just struggling

  1292. and all I could

  1293. think about was

  1294. I want this

1295. but I want my life

  1296. too

  1297. I want to fulfill

  1298. this dream

  1299. and I knew

  1300. I can't have both

  1301. I'm either going

  1302. to take the one

  1303. or lose the other

  1304. or lose the one

  1305. and take the other

  1306. and at 14 years

  1307. of age

  1308. I did exactly

  1309. what that

  1310. man in the parable

  1311. did

  1312. I sold everything

  1313. I had

  1314. and took that

  1315. treasure

  1316. and embraced

  1317. that treasure

  1318. because it

  1319. in the moment

  1320. was all that

  1321. mattered

  1322. and that's how

  1323. you come to

  1324. Jesus

  1325. you don't come

  1326. on your terms

  1327. you come on

  1328. his terms

  1329. that's why

  1330. some of you

  1331. never had it

  1332. because you've

  1333. you've tried

  1334. to come on

  1335. your terms

  1336. okay God

  1337. I'll give you

  1338. this much

  1339. of my life

1340. if I can have it

  1341. it won't cost me

  1342. too much

  1343. it'll cost you

  1344. everything

  1345. everything

  1346. there's no other

  1347. way to get it

  1348. than to give

  1349. everything

  1350. you just got to

  1351. recognize

  1352. I'm going to put

  1353. all my chips

  1354. in that pot

  1355. I'm going to

  1356. believe that

  1357. that's the only

  1358. thing that matters

  1359. and that's what

  1360. I want

  1361. do you want it

  1362. like that

  1363. this morning

  1364. have you ever

  1365. had it

  1366. if not

  1367. I want to tell

  1368. you

  1369. it's the treasure

  1370. to end all

  1371. treasures

  1372. would you take

  1373. it this morning

  1374. would you

  1375. just receive

  1376. it this morning

  1377. let's see

  1378. Salz Werk

  1379. doing

  1380. another

  1381. thing

  1382. to die

  1383. Bei

  1384. l

  1385. have you

  1386. to say

  1387. to die

  1388. entrée

  1389. megaphone
