  1. If you have a tendency to grab a piece of scripture and read it apart from its surrounding passages,

  2. our text this morning may not carry the idea of a mother's love.

  3. It may instead feel somewhat like an attempted abandonment.

  4. It may look like a stroke of luck if you believe in such as that.

  5. It may look like a fairy tale.

  6. But in reality, it's a wonderful account of the early days of one of God's mighty men

  7. that was preserved in a trying time to lead a people to the God of promise.

  8. Our passage today would not appear to be an example of a mother's love, but man is it.

  9. It's in Exodus chapter 2, beginning in verse 1, and it says this.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  10. Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman.

  11. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.

  12. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes

  13. and dabbed it with bitumen and pitch.

  14. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds of the riverbed.

  15. And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him.

  16. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river while her young women walked beside the river.

  17. She saw the baskets among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.

  18. But when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying.

  19. She took pity on him and said, this is one of Hebrews' children.

  20. Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter,

  21. shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?

  22. And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, go.

  23. So the girl went and called the child's mother, and Pharaoh's daughter said to her,

  24. take this child away and nurse him for me, and I'll give you your wages.

  25. So the woman took the child and nursed him, and when the child grew older,

  26. she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son.

  27. She named him Moses because she said, I drew him out of the water.

  28. Now what would appear to look like abandonment is really quite the opposite.

  29. Because this passage speaks of the time when the Hebrew people were slaves to Egypt.

  30. And Egypt were attempting to kill any Hebrew boys that were born

  31. in order to stifle the growth of their slaves,

  32. afraid that that slave body would get so large that it would overtake the Egyptians.

  33. So they were instructed that if a boy was killed to be killed upon,

  34. if a boy was born to be killed upon the spot.

  35. That is awful.

  36. When we think about that, it shocks us to read such as that.

  37. I want to be clear.

  38. We should be even more shocked that a civilized, free country

  39. that's been built on the faith of the Judeo-Christian faith,

  40. like the United States,

  41. is battling over right now the same thing for many children.

  42. They're just making sure they do it while the child is in its mother.

  43. It's called abortion.

  44. Not only is it allowed, but it's fought for and celebrated

  45. as the power the woman has over her own body.

  46. And I just want you to watch the rage that is taking place in our country

  47. right now over Roe and Casey and the possibility,

  48. the hinting of it being overturned

  49. in an unprecedented leak to stir the pot

  50. in a hopes to change the direction that the Supreme Court takes.

  51. Folks, lost folks are bloodthirsty to kill the ruling

  52. just as bloodthirsty as they are to kill the babies.

  53. And the whole time they speak of the rights of women over their body,

  54. but actually it's the body of the child

  55. that has to be discarded afterwards

  56. or maybe saved for research.

  57. What a shame.

  58. And I want you to know this morning

  59. that God hears the cries of an aborted child.

  60. Thankfully, the faith of Hebrew midwives came in.

  61. And they were often called on.

  62. And when they were called on,

  63. they would save these little lives of these little boys.

  64. When Hebrew boys were still being born after that,

  65. Pharaoh changed his instructions.

  66. Instead of killing them on the spot,

  67. he said, throw all newborn Hebrew boys in the Nile River.

  68. He wanted them to be drowned immediately upon birth.

  69. And that's why Moses' mother did what she did.

  70. Because when we look at this passage today,

  71. Moses' mother, Jochebed, responded to that demand

  72. and the way she responded.

  73. When you really dissect it and look at it,

  74. it's pretty powerful.

  75. She responded, one, with a godly mother's love that protects.

  76. Instead of just throwing them in the water,

  77. she carefully prepared a papyrus basket

  78. by coating it with tar to allow it to float.

  79. Then she strategically placed it,

  80. the basket in the reeds of the river,

  81. securing it from floating away.

  82. Why? Because that's the care and the protection of a mother.

  83. That basket was a safe abode from water.

  84. That basket was safe from animals.

  85. Because why?

  86. Because there was a watchful eye

  87. watching that basket with that boy in those reeds.

  88. He was strategically placed in those reeds

  89. so that he would not float away.

  90. He was strategically placed so Pharaoh's daughter,

  91. who often came down to the river to bathe,

  92. would find him and save him.

  93. That's the watchful eye of a mother.

  94. See, a godly mother seals off her child

  95. from the whims of the world and of the devil.

  96. And by training that child properly

  97. and by allowing him or her to build friendships

  98. with fellow Christians

  99. by faithful church attendance and activity.

  100. Please don't underestimate the strength that it is

  101. when your children at an early age

  102. find friends within the church,

  103. begin to build relationships with those

  104. who know how they ought to live.

  105. Those who can strengthen one another.

  106. It's a godly mother that sets rules and regulations

  107. not to oppress a child, but to protect that child.

  108. We live in a day when parenting is a lot more lax

  109. than when I was a child.

  110. I can't remember ever feeling lorded over

  111. by my mother and dad.

  112. I never sensed that.

  113. I never felt like I was in a strict home.

  114. I didn't get everything I wanted.

  115. I didn't get to do everything I wanted to do.

  116. But I knew when I was to be at home,

  117. and I knew that when I rounded that bend on the way home,

  118. that I'd see a light on beside my mother's bed

  119. as she waited for me to get home.

  120. And not only did I know that my mother and dad would be there

  121. and would love and protect me,

  122. but I knew when I did something stupid,

  123. I'd have to face them when I got home.

  124. You know?

  125. It made a difference.

  126. And I promise you, parents,

  127. in the midst of the struggle of raising children,

  128. it still does make a difference.

  129. We live in a day

  130. when what you do on Sunday is a harder choice

  131. than it used to be.

  132. I mean, there's a lot of options out there for you to do.

  133. A lot of things take you away from church.

  134. Sunday's one of the busiest days

  135. with all kinds of activities that involve your childhood.

  136. And there's pressure there to be a part of that.

  137. And I well know that.

  138. That pressure is tough

  139. as you watch the trends of others.

  140. That's why I think it's so important

  141. that you're going to have to decide

  142. what you and your family does on Sunday.

  143. How big a priority is it to you?

  144. Are you going to follow the trends of the world?

  145. Are you going to follow what God tells us to do

  146. according to his will and his word?

  147. What's most important?

  148. And listen,

  149. church, when they bring those children to this church,

  150. when they make those decisions

  151. to bring up those children in love and admonition of the Lord

  152. and to bring it under the umbrella of this church,

  153. how important it is

  154. that the volunteers are there

  155. for Vacation Bible School.

  156. Let me just say there's a sign up

  157. in the lobby out there.

  158. How important it is to be a part of that,

  159. to have Children's Church

  160. and Awana

  161. and all those other things that take place

  162. and any opportunities that we have

  163. to nurture them,

  164. to love on them,

  165. to lead them to Christ.

  166. How important it is

  167. when you see those children

  168. to speak to them,

  169. to love on them,

  170. to let them know

  171. this is home.

  172. This is where they want to be.

  173. I grew up in a home

  174. where I desired to go to church.

  175. I was going to be there

  176. whether I liked it or not,

  177. but I wanted to be at church

  178. and I enjoy being at church.

  179. I've always been like that

  180. because I was raised that way

  181. to be taught that.

  182. Whether it's a papyrus basket

  183. lined with tar

  184. or whether it's a nightstand light

  185. that's on

  186. or whether it's a bold decision

  187. to faithfully follow Jesus,

  188. a godly mother's love protects.

  189. But not only that,

  190. but a godly mother's love

  191. also prepares

  192. because if you gave your child

  193. everything that he or she wanted,

  194. you would absolutely ruin them.

  195. Not only would you spoil him,

  196. but you'd lead her down

  197. a road of false expectations

  198. that the world's just going to

  199. hand it to him.

  200. I promise you,

  201. Moses didn't care

  202. to be left in that river.

  203. I bet that baby wasn't happy.

  204. I bet they heard him crying

  205. as he laid in that basket.

  206. But Moses' mother knew

  207. what he needed

  208. and that was important.

  209. It was more important

  210. than what he wanted.

  211. At some point,

  212. you got to let your children go.

  213. You know it's coming

  214. and they may not understand that.

  215. And when you know

  216. that that's coming in the future,

  217. you need to prepare them for that.

  218. Do now,

  219. if you have children in your home,

  220. do now what you cannot do later.

  221. Discipline your child

  222. is never fun,

  223. but it is necessary.

  224. And so do it now

  225. while you have the opportunity.

  226. You don't hold them back

  227. from getting the proper medical care

  228. that they need

  229. because they don't like it,

  230. because they don't like going to the doctor

  231. or they don't like shots

  232. or the medicine tastes nasty.

  233. No, no, no.

  234. You take care of them.

  235. You do that.

  236. It's necessary.

  237. And so you do it.

  238. Saying no is not easy

  239. or fun.

  240. It's necessary.

  241. So you do it.

  242. Reading the Word of God

  243. and praying together

  244. is not easy.

  245. And man, on some days

  246. it feels absolutely impossible,

  247. but do it now

  248. while you have opportunity.

  249. You may have a child

  250. that will be an adult

  251. soon.

  252. So do it now.

  253. They won't look to tomorrow.

  254. They're worried about the now.

  255. You look to tomorrow.

  256. You prepare them for tomorrow.

  257. Do it now.

  258. Because a godly mother's love protects.

  259. It prepares.

  260. But not only that,

  261. it also provides.

  262. Jochebed had a strategic plan here

  263. to nurse and to raise Moses.

  264. When he was under the protection

  265. of Pharaoh's home.

  266. That is sophisticated

  267. and daring.

  268. And she did it

  269. because she loved her child.

  270. The nursing of a mother

  271. is part of that provision of a child.

  272. And godly parents know

  273. that they must do that,

  274. do without at times

  275. because their child

  276. will need to have something.

  277. And it takes sacrifice

  278. to spend time with your child.

  279. But you've got to make that choice.

  280. There's a lot of

  281. babysitting substitutes

  282. for children these days.

  283. They're not all good.

  284. You can turn on the TV

  285. and you can text

  286. and you can allow them

  287. on the internet.

  288. Give them a remote

  289. and let them have at it

  290. if you want to.

  291. Give them an iPad

  292. with no limits.

  293. Or you can choose

  294. to raise your kids right.

  295. A parent has to decide that.

  296. We provide what they need

  297. while we have opportunity.

  298. Now what do they need?

  299. What do we provide?

  300. We provide our attention.

  301. We give them our attention.

  302. Small child,

  303. that may be a storybook at night.

  304. As they get older,

  305. it may be a kitchen lesson

  306. along the way.

  307. As they get even older,

  308. it may be a listening ear.

  309. Just hearing them out.

  310. Seeing how you can help.

  311. Tell you what else we give them.

  312. We ought to give them some laughter.

  313. You need a sense of humor.

  314. I promise you.

  315. If you don't laugh in this world,

  316. you will cry.

  317. So you might as well laugh.

  318. And you ought to have a willingness

  319. to be silly

  320. and to see them laugh

  321. and have fun with them.

  322. They need our time.

  323. We need to provide our time.

  324. Do things with them.

  325. We need to provide our creativity.

  326. There's a lot to grab their attention.

  327. It's worth the effort

  328. to work hard

  329. to entertain them ourselves.

  330. You need to provide our resources.

  331. Children are not secondary.

  332. They're a priority in our lives.

  333. And although Jochebed

  334. had unique arrangements,

  335. while she could,

  336. she provided for her child.

  337. I'm thankful that

  338. God provided for her

  339. and took care of her

  340. and took care of him

  341. and used him

  342. to be that great deliverer

  343. that he would use

  344. as he grew older.

  345. All because a godly mother

  346. protected and prepared

  347. and provided.

  348. But not only that,

  349. but lastly,

  350. a godly mother's love promises.

  351. There comes a time

  352. when you have to give

  353. your child to the Lord.

  354. When you've done all that you can

  355. in raising that child

  356. in the love

  357. and the admonition

  358. of the Lord.

  359. One of the most difficult parts

  360. of this move

  361. for my family

  362. as we drew near to this day,

  363. as I began to see God

  364. begin to unravel

  365. and open to me

  366. what his will

  367. was going to be for us.

  368. As I began to see that,

  369. one of the great difficult parts

  370. of this was knowing

  371. that Abby was going to stay

  372. in Mississippi

  373. and was going to start her career.

  374. There's a great chance

  375. that she was going to

  376. raise a family

  377. that far away.

  378. I'm telling you,

  379. I mean,

  380. I,

  381. we're a tight-knit family.

  382. Abby commuted to school

  383. and she will tell you

  384. that that helped contribute

  385. to her academic success,

  386. which she had it,

  387. thank God.

  388. People often tell me,

  389. and I get a little defensive

  390. about it,

  391. well, you're going home.

  392. You're going back home.

  393. I want to be clear

  394. about something.

  395. Home in my life

  396. is what God's will is.

  397. If I didn't do

  398. what the Lord's will was,

  399. I'd be not at home.

  400. But as long as I follow

  401. the will of the Lord,

  402. I am at home,

  403. thank God.

  404. And I rest in that.

  405. And so I entrust

  406. my family to him

  407. and I trust that

  408. he'll take care of them.

  409. Because when you follow

  410. God's will,

  411. hear me,

  412. when you follow

  413. God's will,

  414. you trust him.

  415. Well, you trust him

  416. for a home,

  417. by the way.

  418. Are y'all praying

  419. about that?

  420. You need to be.

  421. You trust him

  422. for a home.

  423. You trust him

  424. with your kids.

  425. And you walk

  426. with the Lord.

  427. You trust his heart

  428. when you can't

  429. see his hand.

  430. And listen, friend,

  431. Proverbs 22,

    Proverbs 22:6

  432. verse 6 says,

  433. train up a child

  434. in the way he should go

  435. and when he's old,

  436. he will not

  437. depart from it.

  438. Does that mean

  439. there won't be

  440. detours along the way?

  441. There will be.

  442. Does that mean

  443. you have to be

  444. perfect along the way?

  445. Man, I hope not.

  446. We're all in trouble

  447. if that's the case.

  448. And I'm going to tell you,

  449. I want to be clear

  450. about this.

  451. It's not a guarantee

  452. they won't go astray.

  453. It's a proverb,

  454. not a promise.

  455. It is, however,

  456. easier to steer

  457. your course

  458. when you've guided them

  459. in the right direction.

  460. When you've shown them

  461. consistently

  462. what is right.

  463. how children,

  464. how a child

  465. is brought up

  466. will make a world

  467. of difference

  468. in what she values

  469. when she gets older.

  470. So make a difference

  471. while you can.

  472. And once you bring

  473. a child up,

  474. there's little more

  475. that you can do

  476. so seize the day.

  477. You've got to fully

  478. trust the Lord

  479. in that matter.

  480. Was it easy

  481. for Moses' mother?

  482. By no means.

  483. Was it a step

  484. and a trait of faith?

  485. You know it was.

  486. Because the love

  487. of a godly mother

  488. is interesting.

  489. The love of a godly mother

  490. is not primarily

  491. based on her love

  492. for her child.

  493. The love of a godly mother

  494. is primarily based

  495. on her love

  496. for the Lord.

  497. The greatest love

  498. in that mother's life

  499. is God.

  500. And in order for you

  501. to have the love

  502. of a godly mother

  503. for your child,

  504. you've got to have

  505. a more intense love

  506. for the Lord.

  507. And the greatest way

  508. that you can love

  509. your child

  510. is through your love

  511. for the Lord.

  512. So if you love God

  513. and that flows

  514. into every avenue

  515. of your life,

  516. you are loving

  517. your child

  518. as much as you

  519. possibly can.

  520. And the greatest

  521. expression of that love

  522. that you can ever

  523. show for your child

  524. is a pattern

  525. of love

  526. for God.

  527. Tell them

  528. they're not

  529. the top priority.

  530. Tell them

  531. God's the top priority

  532. and you'll follow

  533. His will

  534. and His way

  535. to love

  536. your child

  537. more

  538. pursue God.

  539. You know what's

  540. going to happen

  541. when you do?

  542. You're going to grow,

  543. your child's going

  544. to witness you growing,

  545. and your child's

  546. going to grow

  547. a love for God

  548. just like Mama

  549. showed him

  550. or her.

  551. Thank God

  552. for godly mothers.

  553. Let's pray together.

  554. I realize

  555. as we come together

  556. today

  557. that there may be

  558. folks here

  559. who have never

  560. given their heart

  561. to the Lord Jesus.

  562. I don't want us

  563. to ever have

  564. an opportunity

  565. where we don't invite

  566. you to come

  567. to the Lord Jesus.

  568. and if He's spoken

  569. to your heart

  570. and life today,

  571. you realize

  572. that you've got sin

  573. that separates you

  574. from God

  575. and you need God

  576. to forgive you

  577. and to save you

  578. and to change you.

  579. I want you to know

  580. when we stand

  581. and sing in just a moment,

  582. we do that primarily

  583. to give you the opportunity

  584. to come to Christ.

  585. When you walk this aisle,

  586. we'll be happy

  587. to guide you

  588. in what that means.

  589. Maybe God's

  590. leading you

  591. to make a private

  592. decision public.

  593. You've never done

  594. that through baptism.

  595. You've given your heart

  596. and life to the Lord,

  597. but you never followed

  598. Him through baptism.

  599. Maybe you have a desire

  600. to remember this church,

  601. want to be a part of it.

  602. You come.

  603. Let us guide you

  604. in that process

  605. and show you

  606. what that means

  607. here at Pickens First.

  608. Heavenly Father,

  609. I love you

  610. and I thank you

  611. for the love

  612. that you have for us.

  613. And I ask, dear God,

  614. that whatever you choose

  615. to do in our hearts

  616. and lives today,

  617. God,

  618. will your Holy Spirit

  619. just give us

  620. the courage

  621. and the wisdom

  622. and the boldness

  623. to be obedient

  624. in the way

  625. in which you lead us.

  626. We love you dearly

  627. and we thank you

  628. for this time right now.

  629. Oh God, I pray

  630. in Jesus' name.

  631. Amen.

  632. Stand up.

  633. Amen.

  634. Amen.

  635. Amen.

  636. Amen.

  637. Amen.

  638. Amen.

  639. Amen.

  640. Amen.

  641. Amen.

  642. Amen.

  643. Amen.

  644. Amen.

  645. Amen.

  646. Amen.
