  1. If you have your Bibles, I'd like to ask you to open them with me to Mark chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  2. Mark chapter 9, and we're going to be looking at verses 14 through 29.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  3. This morning, we're going to be taking a look at my favorite verse throughout Scripture.

  4. It's my favorite verse because I find so often myself identifying with the Father that we find in this passage.

  5. The Father in this passage is coming to Jesus, and He's totally desperate.

  6. He's in circumstances that are beyond His control, and He's turned to every source of help He could possibly find up until now, but He has received no help.

  7. You see, His Son was possessed by a demon.

  8. He had gone to religious leaders. He had gone to some of Jesus' disciples.

  9. But up until now, He's found no help.

  10. And He approaches Jesus and says, if you can do anything, please help us.

  11. And Jesus assures Him that all things are possible to those who believe.

  12. And this is where my favorite verse comes in here.

  13. For He comes to Jesus and He says, I believe.

  14. Help me overcome my unbelief.

  15. Help me overcome my unbelief.

  16. If the man believed in Jesus, he knew that he was able.

  17. I'm sure he had heard stories up until now of Jesus healing the sick, raising the dead, casting demons from people.

  18. But maybe he was fearful a little bit or had a little bit of doubt creeping to the back of his mind.

  19. Because up until now, he had gone to those who he assumed should have been able to help him.

  20. But he had found no help up until now.

  21. And so he says, I believe.

  22. I believe.

  23. Help me overcome my unbelief.

  24. Have you ever found yourself in a situation like that?

  25. Have you ever found yourself in totally desperate times?

  26. Desperate situation or circumstances that are out of your control and beyond your ability to deal with?

  27. I'm sure most of us have found ourselves in those situations at times.

  28. And while we know that Jesus is more than able to do anything we ask, we know He's able.

  29. But do we ever have that little bit of doubt creep into the back of our mind of will He?

  30. Will He answer our prayers the way we've asked Him to?

  31. We know God is able.

  32. But sometimes we question whether He will.

  33. Or maybe we've faced situations in life, circumstances in life, and they've just beaten us down so much

  34. that we're weary, that we're tired, and we just don't know where to turn.

  35. And we allow a little bit of doubt to creep into our mind.

  36. You know, this passage is amazing.

  37. It speaks to me so much because I find myself in the same situation at times where we know Christ is able.

  38. But we have to be honest and say, Jesus, help me overcome my unbelief.

  39. But this passage is also one of the most misinterpreted scriptures in all the Bible.

  40. We often hear pastors and others saying, if you just have enough faith, just have enough faith,

  41. then God will do whatever you ask Him to.

  42. We especially hear that in these name it and claim it preachers.

  43. Just have enough faith.

  44. And then when God doesn't answer the way we wanted Him to, they're, oh, you didn't have enough faith.

  45. But is that what really the scriptures teach us?

  46. Is that what God's really teaching us or Jesus is teaching us in this passage?

  47. And so before we look at our scripture this morning, I want us to go to the Lord in prayer.

  48. And I want us to take time to ask God to speak to each one of our hearts.

  49. I'm sure we're in different situations in life, different circumstances in life.

  50. And many of us may be in moments like that where we've been praying for God to answer our prayers for a long time.

  51. And until now, He's not done it.

  52. He hasn't responded in the manner in which we want Him to, at least.

  53. And so we're allowing a little bit of doubt to creep into the back of our minds.

  54. Where is God?

  55. Does He love us?

  56. Will He answer as I have requested?

  57. Well, let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  58. Father, we thank You for this day.

  59. Again, we thank You for the privilege of being able to come together as the body of Christ.

  60. And to lift Your name high above every name and to worship You.

  61. We're thankful that we can take a day to set aside all of our worries, all of our concerns, all of our fears.

  62. And just come before You, Lord.

  63. And I ask, Lord, today that You speak to us in Your Word.

  64. I pray that You speak to every heart here today.

  65. Every life.

  66. Wherever each of us may be in the journey of life, different situations, different circumstances.

  67. I pray that You help us to set aside those worries, those cares, those fears.

  68. And just come to You and allow Your Word to speak to us.

  69. And grant us faith.

  70. Maybe today there's someone here that they've been fearful to step out and receive You as Lord and Savior.

  71. They know all the claims about You, Christ.

  72. But they're fearful to make that step.

  73. And I pray, Lord, today You'd give them the faith to recognize You as God.

  74. The Messiah who died upon a cross for our sins.

  75. That we can put our faith and trust in You to receive forgiveness of our sin.

  76. And be adopted into the family of God.

  77. And we thank You, Lord, for this.

  78. And we praise You always in Jesus' name.

  79. Amen.

  80. Well, let's look together at our scripture.

  81. We're going to look at Mark chapter 9, verses 14 through 29.

    Mark 9:14–29

  82. When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them,

  83. and the teachers of the law arguing with them.

  84. As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet Him.

  85. What are you arguing with them about, he asked.

  86. A man in the crowd answered,

  87. Teacher, I brought you my son who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.

  88. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground.

  89. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid.

  90. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.

  91. Oh, unbelieving generation, Jesus replied.

  92. How long shall I stay with you?

  93. How long shall I put up with you?

  94. Bring the boy to me.

  95. So they brought him.

  96. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion.

  97. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

  98. Jesus asked the boy's father,

  99. How long has he been like this?

  100. From childhood, he answered,

  101. It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him.

  102. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.

  103. If you can, said Jesus, everything is possible for him who believes.

  104. Immediately the boy's father exclaimed,

  105. I do believe.

  106. Help me overcome my unbelief.

  107. When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,

  108. he rebuked the evil spirit.

  109. You deaf and mute spirit, he said,

  110. I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.

  111. The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently, and came out.

  112. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said,

  113. He's dead.

  114. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet,

  115. and he stood up.

  116. But after Jesus had gone indoors,

  117. his disciples asked him privately,

  118. Why couldn't we drive it out?

  119. And he replied,

  120. This kind can come out only by prayer.

  121. Jesus and his three disciples that made up his inner circle,

  122. Peter, James, and John,

  123. they had just had this amazing experience on the Mount of Transfiguration

  124. where Jesus truly revealed his identity to Peter, James, and John.

  125. They heard the voice of the Father speak.

  126. They met with Moses and Elijah.

  127. Can you imagine that?

  128. And here they come down off of the mountain

  129. where the other disciples were waiting,

  130. and a crowd had formed.

  131. And they began to see that the disciples

  132. were engaged in an argument with the religious leaders.

  133. And so Jesus came, and he asked,

  134. What are you all arguing about?

  135. Now, I'm reading into this,

  136. but I can just imagine there was silence for a moment.

  137. There was just a bit of silence.

  138. Nobody wanted to tell Jesus, you know,

  139. what they had been arguing about.

  140. But finally, we see in verse 17,

  141. the father speaks out, and he says,

  142. Teacher, I brought you my son

  143. who is possessed by a spirit

  144. that has robbed him of speech.

  145. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground.

  146. He foams at the mouth,

  147. gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid.

  148. I ask your disciples to drive out the spirit,

  149. but they could not.

  150. You know, when we take a look at these verses,

  151. and we take a look at the other gospel accounts

  152. of this same story,

  153. we begin to see the condition

  154. that this boy was living in,

  155. and certainly his father as well.

  156. If you're a parent,

  157. you know the hurt and the pain and the sorrow

  158. that you feel when your children are struggling,

  159. or hurting, or up against circumstances

  160. that are beyond our control.

  161. And so we see this horrific picture

  162. of this boy's life.

  163. He's possessed by a demon

  164. that often throws him to the ground.

  165. He then is left foaming at the mouth.

  166. He grinds his teeth.

  167. He becomes rigid as a board.

  168. If you drop down to verse 22,

  169. you also see that this demon

  170. often throws him into the water,

  171. or into fire trying to kill him.

  172. He's also deaf and mute.

  173. So you can imagine this boy,

  174. he's covered with scars,

  175. he's covered with burns,

  176. and he just lives a horrific life,

  177. which in turn leaves the father

  178. living a just horrific life

  179. of worry and fear.

  180. And if you really put yourself

  181. in that position this morning,

  182. put yourself right here

  183. in the midst of the scripture,

  184. you can begin to feel

  185. the desperation of this father.

  186. You can feel his agony

  187. and his pain.

  188. If you've ever had a child

  189. that you've struggled with,

  190. maybe they've had health issues,

  191. maybe they've gone wayward

  192. away from the Lord,

  193. or maybe there's just been

  194. other circumstances in their life

  195. that you've struggled with,

  196. you know that you can feel

  197. this father's hurt and his pain.

  198. And he comes to Jesus

  199. because he's obviously heard

  200. that Jesus has healed the sick.

  201. He's heard that he's cast out demons

  202. from others,

  203. and so he has great hope

  204. that this is the answer.

  205. This is what he's looking for,

  206. and he comes to find Jesus,

  207. but Jesus is up on the mountain

  208. with Peter, James, and John,

  209. and he's unavailable,

  210. and so he goes to the other disciples.

  211. The disciples,

  212. who just three chapters before this

  213. had been sent out by Jesus

  214. to heal the sick

  215. and to cast out demons.

  216. You know,

  217. they had been doing this themselves,

  218. and so the man comes

  219. to the nine disciples

  220. that were at the foot of the mountain,

  221. and he asks them to help him

  222. and to cast out this demon,

  223. but they were unable to do so.

  224. We have to ask ourselves the question,

  225. if they had been sent out in chapter 6,

  226. and they had already been out there

  227. casting out demons

  228. and anointing people with oil

  229. and healing them,

  230. why then were they unable

  231. to cast this demon out of this boy?

  232. Why were they unsuccessful this time?

  233. Well,

  234. let's put that question on hold

  235. for just a moment,

  236. and we'll come back to it in a minute.

  237. When we drop down further in the chapter,

  238. they asked Jesus that very question,

  239. and so we're going to come back

  240. to that in just a moment.

  241. But Jesus comes down the mountain

  242. of transfiguration.

  243. He sees them arguing with the crowds.

  244. He finds out what's going on,

  245. and so he asks them

  246. to bring the boy to him.

  247. He says,

  248. bring the boy to me,

  249. and the father states

  250. that if you can do anything,

  251. take pity on us and help us.

  252. And you can just imagine

  253. Jesus looking at the guy

  254. and say,

  255. if I can,

  256. if I can help,

  257. and he assures him

  258. that all things are possible

  259. for him who believes.

  260. Now,

  261. this is where this passage,

  262. this passage,

  263. and other passages

  264. throughout the New Testament

  265. are often misinterpreted.

  266. Again,

  267. I said a moment ago,

  268. we often see individuals say,

  269. if you just have enough faith,

  270. just believe,

  271. and God will do exactly

  272. what you want him to do.

  273. But is that really

  274. what scripture is teaching us?

  275. You know,

  276. I remember

  277. back in 2005,

  278. my dad was diagnosed

  279. with a brain tumor,

  280. and I went home,

  281. I knelt beside his chair,

  282. laid hands on him,

  283. and prayed,

  284. and I believed

  285. with all my heart,

  286. as much as I could,

  287. that God would heal him

  288. of this brain tumor,

  289. and at 65,

  290. he would not die.

  291. But less than a month later,

  292. my dad passed away.

  293. And God didn't answer

  294. my prayer

  295. the way I had wanted him to,

  296. and had asked him,

  297. now,

  298. did I not have enough faith?

  299. Did God let my dad die

  300. because I didn't have

  301. enough faith?

  302. Well,

  303. I don't believe

  304. that's what scripture teaches,

  305. do you?

  306. Jesus said,

  307. if you have the faith

  308. of a mustard seed,

  309. which a mustard seed

  310. is the tiniest of all seeds,

  311. one of the tiniest seeds,

  312. he says,

  313. if you have the faith

  314. of a mustard seed,

  315. you can tell this mountain

  316. to move,

  317. and it will move.

  318. And I don't believe

  319. for a moment

  320. that when we look

  321. at the entirety

  322. of scripture,

  323. that we can walk away

  324. from the entirety

  325. of scripture,

  326. because usually scripture

  327. is the best commentary

  328. for scripture,

  329. isn't it?

  330. We have to look

  331. at all of scripture,

  332. and it has to complement

  333. one another.

  334. If we come away

  335. with something

  336. that contradicts

  337. another passage

  338. of scripture,

  339. then we're coming away

  340. with the wrong conclusion.

  341. But we have to look

  342. at the entirety

  343. of scripture,

  344. and yes,

  345. Jesus does confirm

  346. on more than one occasion

  347. that faith plays a role

  348. in answered prayer.

  349. Faith does play a role.

  350. He says,

  351. here,

  352. all things are possible

  353. to those who believe.

  354. We also see,

  355. remember the lady

  356. who had been bleeding

  357. for a number of years,

  358. and she knew

  359. if she could just touch

  360. the hem of his garment,

  361. she would be healed.

  362. And so,

  363. she pushed her way

  364. through the crowd

  365. and got as close to Jesus

  366. as she possibly could,

  367. and she reaches out

  368. and touches his garment,

  369. and instantly,

  370. she was healed.

  371. And he felt it.

  372. He knew energy

  373. had gone out from,

  374. or healing power

  375. had gone out from him,

  376. and so he stopped

  377. and said,

  378. who touched me?

  379. Well,

  380. the disciples thought

  381. he was nuts,

  382. didn't they?

  383. Like,

  384. what do you mean

  385. who touched you?

  386. You know,

  387. all this crowd

  388. pushing in on you,

  389. but finally the lady said

  390. she was the one

  391. that reached out,

  392. and what did Jesus say?

  393. He says,

  394. your faith

  395. has healed you.

  396. So,

  397. faith does play

  398. a very significant role

  399. in our lives

  400. in answered prayer,

  401. but I don't believe

  402. for a moment

  403. that the Bible

  404. teaches us

  405. that if you just

  406. have enough faith,

  407. then God

  408. will answer

  409. your prayers

  410. the way

  411. you ask them,

  412. or what you're

  413. asking of him.

  414. As a matter of fact,

  415. if we turn to

  416. 1 John chapter 5,

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  417. look with me

  418. if you will.

  419. John chapter 5

    John 5:14

  420. verses 14 and 15,

  421. this is one

  422. of those scriptures

  423. where we have

  424. to use scripture

  425. to interpret

  426. other scripture.

  427. And this is

  428. a very vital scripture

  429. to me

  430. in understanding

  431. that if we have

  432. enough faith,

  433. how will God respond?

  434. 1 John 5,

  435. 14 and 15,

  436. this is the confidence

  437. we have

  438. in approaching God

  439. that if we ask

  440. anything,

  441. now pay attention,

  442. if we ask

  443. anything

  444. according

  445. to his will,

  446. he hears us.

  447. And if we know

  448. that he hears us,

  449. whatever we ask,

  450. we know

  451. that we have

  452. what we ask

  453. of him.

  454. If we pray

  455. anything

  456. according

  457. to

  458. his will,

  459. how do we know

  460. the will of God?

  461. How do we

  462. pray the will

  463. of God?

  464. How do we know

  465. his will

  466. that we can

  467. put it into prayer?

  468. Well,

  469. the word of God,

  470. for starters,

  471. the more time

  472. we spend

  473. in God's word

  474. and the more

  475. time we spend

  476. in his presence

  477. and we develop

  478. that relationship

  479. of just

  480. resting in him

  481. and resting

  482. in his word

  483. and knowing

  484. the word

  485. of God,

  486. the better we can

  487. know the will

  488. of God.

  489. And the more

  490. we know the will

  491. of God,

  492. the more we can

  493. incorporate it

  494. into our prayer lives

  495. and instead of

  496. just simply having

  497. prayers that are

  498. always focused

  499. on ourselves

  500. and our wants

  501. and our desires,

  502. we begin praying

  503. the very will

  504. of God.

  505. And the more

  506. we spend

  507. in his presence

  508. and the more

  509. we develop

  510. that intimate

  511. and personal

  512. relationship

  513. with God,

  514. the more he

  515. changes our hearts.

  516. He changes

  517. our heart

  518. so that

  519. our desire

  520. is the will

  521. of God.

  522. The more

  523. we dwell

  524. in his presence,

  525. the more

  526. we want

  527. more than

  528. anything else

  529. is for the

  530. will

  531. of God

  532. to be done.

  533. Pastor Daniel

  534. did not

  535. pay me

  536. to say this.

  537. But a few

  538. weeks ago

  539. he introduced

  540. a Bible

  541. reading plan

  542. here.

  543. If you've not

  544. picked one of these

  545. up,

  546. there's still

  547. a couple up here.

  548. There may be

  549. some in the back.

  550. It's also

  551. in the newsletter.

  552. It's also

  553. on the website.

  554. Practice

  555. spending time

  556. with God

  557. daily

  558. in prayer.

  559. Allowing

  560. him to speak

  561. to us.

  562. And then

  563. instead of

  564. praying

  565. you know

  566. just

  567. fleshly

  568. worldly

  569. prayers

  570. that we're

  571. asking God

  572. allow his

  573. Holy Spirit

  574. to direct

  575. us and

  576. guide us

  577. that we're

  578. praying

  579. the very

  580. will of God.

  581. Is it wrong

  582. to ask

  583. for healing?

  584. Is it wrong

  585. to ask

  586. for things

  587. like this?

  588. No.

  589. It's not

  590. wrong.

  591. I wasn't

  592. out of God's

  593. will to pray

  594. that he

  595. heal my

  596. father.

  597. It's not

  598. wrong to

  599. pray that

  600. if you

  601. need a

  602. new job

  603. or your

  604. marriage is

  605. struggling

  606. that you

  607. pray for

  608. these things.

  609. We should

  610. pray for

  611. these things.

  612. You should

  613. bring in

  614. other believers

  615. to join you

  616. in praying

  617. for these

  618. things as

  619. you're able.

  620. But remember

  621. when Jesus

  622. prayed at the

  623. Garden of

  624. Gethsemane,

  625. he asked

  626. that this

  627. cup be

  628. taken from

  629. him.

  630. He said

  631. remove this

  632. cup from

  633. me.

  634. But what

  635. else did

  636. he say?

  637. Not my

  638. will, but

  639. your will be

  640. done.

  641. And so

  642. Jesus was

  643. showing us

  644. there that

  645. there are

  646. times when

  647. we pray for

  648. God's will

  649. or we pray

  650. for things

  651. in our

  652. lives.

  653. But more

  654. importantly,

  655. we want

  656. God's will

  657. to be

  658. done in

  659. our lives

  660. even when

  661. we don't

  662. understand

  663. why.

  664. I didn't

  665. understand.

  666. Why did

  667. God allow

  668. my dad to

  669. die at

  670. 65 when

  671. he was

  672. just starting

  673. to retire?

  674. Looking forward

  675. to the golden

  676. years of

  677. spending with

  678. my mom.

  679. He said he

  680. was going to

  681. come see me

  682. more often.

  683. But why

  684. did God

  685. allow him

  686. to die?

  687. I can't

  688. answer that.

  689. But I do

  690. know that

  691. one day

  692. when we're

  693. in heaven

  694. it's not

  695. going to be

  696. all that

  697. important

  698. anymore,

  699. is it?

  700. All of our

  701. tears will

  702. be wiped

  703. away.

  704. All the

  705. struggle,

  706. all the

  707. pain,

  708. all the

  709. sorrows

  710. that we

  711. face,

  712. the challenges

  713. that we

  714. were up

  715. against,

  716. that we

  717. wondered,

  718. God,

  719. where are

  720. you?

  721. Why are

  722. you not

  723. answering?

  724. We don't

  725. understand.

  726. When we

  727. stand before

  728. God,

  729. maybe we'll

  730. understand

  731. better.

  732. But it's

  733. not even

  734. going to

  735. matter.

  736. When we're

  737. standing in

  738. the presence

  739. of the

  740. Lord,

  741. in his

  742. heavenly

  743. kingdom,

  744. all those

  745. things are

  746. going to be

  747. washed away

  748. and it's

  749. all going to

  750. be worth

  751. every little

  752. thing that

  753. we've gone

  754. through and

  755. all the

  756. challenges,

  757. all the

  758. obstacles,

  759. all the

  760. pain.

  761. And we

  762. don't

  763. understand,

  764. but we

  765. have to

  766. have faith

  767. that God's

  768. will is so

  769. superior to

  770. our understanding

  771. and our

  772. beliefs.

  773. God's will

  774. is beyond

  775. our wildest

  776. understanding

  777. and imagination

  778. and we

  779. just have to

  780. come to

  781. him and

  782. trust him

  783. and trust

  784. that his

  785. will is

  786. best.

  787. Now this

  788. father states

  789. to Jesus,

  790. I do

  791. believe.

  792. Help me

  793. overcome my

  794. unbelief.

  795. This man has

  796. searched high

  797. and low

  798. everywhere

  799. possible for

  800. his son's

  801. deliverance

  802. from this

  803. demon,

  804. but up

  805. until now

  806. he's found

  807. no answer.

  808. So we

  809. can understand

  810. the difficulty

  811. this man may

  812. be having

  813. with faith.

  814. Maybe he's

  815. just worried

  816. that he

  817. doesn't want

  818. to get his

  819. hopes up

  820. just to be

  821. crushed once

  822. again.

  823. But at least

  824. he goes to

  825. the father

  826. or to

  827. Jesus and

  828. he says,

  829. you know,

  830. help my

  831. unbelief.

  832. He's coming

  833. in total

  834. honesty.

  835. You know,

  836. when we

  837. struggle in

  838. our faith

  839. a little

  840. bit,

  841. just be

  842. honest with

  843. God.

  844. You know,

  845. I'm struggling

  846. here.

  847. I don't

  848. understand.

  849. I'm going

  850. through pain

  851. and sorrow,

  852. Lord.

  853. Just be

  854. totally

  855. transparent

  856. with God

  857. and share

  858. with him

  859. the hurt

  860. or the pain

  861. or the

  862. doubt

  863. that's creeping

  864. into your

  865. mind and

  866. ask him

  867. to help

  868. you overcome

  869. that unbelief.

  870. Have him

  871. help you,

  872. give you

  873. the faith

  874. that you

  875. need to

  876. trust him

  877. and his

  878. will when

  879. we don't

  880. understand it,

  881. we don't

  882. like it,

  883. and it's

  884. hurtful or

  885. painful,

  886. that we can

  887. trust God's

  888. will even

  889. when one of

  890. our loved

  891. ones pass

  892. away and

  893. die or

  894. when they

  895. continue to

  896. experience pain.

  897. Have you

  898. ever been

  899. there in a

  900. situation like

  901. that where

  902. this man

  903. found himself?

  904. circumstances

  905. beyond your

  906. control?

  907. You believe

  908. that Christ

  909. is more than

  910. able to do

  911. anything,

  912. but maybe

  913. because of the

  914. circumstances of

  915. life that you've

  916. gone through,

  917. life has beaten

  918. you down,

  919. life has been

  920. painful and

  921. hurt,

  922. you're weary,

  923. you're tired,

  924. and you find

  925. it difficult to

  926. really believe

  927. and we begin

  928. to let that

  929. doubt creep

  930. into our minds.

  931. Or maybe

  932. you've prayed

  933. about a

  934. situation or

  935. circumstance in

  936. your life for

  937. a very long

  938. time.

  939. You've prayed

  940. for years

  941. maybe even,

  942. and up until

  943. now you've

  944. received no

  945. answer.

  946. For years

  947. you've asked

  948. God for a

  949. specific answer,

  950. but up until

  951. now God has

  952. not answered it

  953. at least in

  954. the way you

  955. would like for

  956. him to.

  957. And we allow

  958. ourselves to

  959. have those doubts

  960. creep in our

  961. mind, where is

  962. God?

  963. Why is he not

  964. with me?

  965. Does he hear me?

  966. Does he love me?

  967. Is he able?

  968. You know, what's

  969. wrong with me?

  970. You know, Paul

  971. found himself in

  972. a similar situation

  973. like this, where

  974. he found himself

  975. with a thorn in

  976. the flesh.

  977. And for three

  978. seasons, he

  979. prayed and asked

  980. God to remove

  981. that thorn from

  982. his flesh.

  983. Listen to God's

  984. response to him

  985. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12:8

  986. chapter 12,

  987. verses 8 and

  988. 9.

  989. Three times I

  990. pleaded with you,

  991. Lord, to take it

  992. away from me.

  993. But he said to me,

  994. my grace is

  995. sufficient for you,

  996. for my power is

  997. made perfect in

  998. weakness.

  999. What did God

  1000. just tell Paul?

  1001. No.

  1002. That's basically

  1003. what he said,

  1004. isn't it?

  1005. Paul, it was, we

  1006. don't know what the

  1007. thorn was, but it

  1008. was painful, it was

  1009. difficult, it was a

  1010. challenge to him.

  1011. He may have even

  1012. seen it as a

  1013. hindrance to

  1014. continuing on his

  1015. ministry.

  1016. And he pleaded with

  1017. God, please remove

  1018. this thorn from my

  1019. flesh.

  1020. And God said, no.

  1021. So my grace is

  1022. sufficient for you.

  1023. Rest in me.

  1024. Endure the thorn.

  1025. Because God had

  1026. allowed the thorn to

1027. enter into his life for

  1028. a purpose and a

  1029. reason, and he wasn't

  1030. removing that thorn until

  1031. it had accomplished the

  1032. purpose that God had

1033. allowed it to be there in

  1034. the first place.

  1035. You know, maybe you're

  1036. in a situation like

  1037. that.

  1038. You've been praying,

  1039. asking God for

  1040. something, and he

  1041. says no.

  1042. But he's saying, my

  1043. grace is sufficient for

  1044. you.

  1045. Rest in me.

1046. Rest in the power and

1047. the strength of God and

  1048. trust him that he's

1049. working in your life in

  1050. a way you don't

  1051. understand that's beyond

  1052. our comprehension at

  1053. this time.

1054. Now drop down with me

  1055. to verse 28.

1056. Verse 28, we see that

1057. Jesus is alone with the

  1058. disciples, and they come

1059. to him and they ask,

1060. why were we not able to

  1061. cast out this demon?

1062. And we see that Jesus

1063. states, this kind can come

  1064. out only by prayer.

  1065. Some of your Bible

  1066. translations include

  1067. and fasting.

  1068. Prayer and fasting.

1069. And the implication that I

1070. gained from this is the

1071. disciples had gone out in

1072. chapter 6 in the name of

1073. Christ, in the power and the

1074. authority of Jesus Christ, and

1075. they had gone out and they

1076. were healing the sick and

1077. they were casting out demons.

1078. But they got so comfortable in

1079. their abilities to do this, that

1080. now Jesus was up on the

  1081. Mount of Transfiguration and

1082. they were trying to cast that

1083. demon out in their own power.

1084. They were trying to cast that

1085. demon out of this boy and heal

1086. him in their own strength.

1087. We're no match for Satan.

1088. We're no match to the powers

1089. of darkness when we go in our

1090. own strength and our own power.

1091. Jesus said this type can only

1092. come out through prayer and we'll

1093. add the word fasting on there.

1094. Fasting is just an intense, a

1095. more intense way to go to God in

  1096. prayer.

1097. To do without what your physical

1098. body needs to put God first and

1099. to seek him or to cry out to

1100. him, to beg him, to plead with

1101. him, to intervene in a situation.

1102. But to go in prayer.

  1103. You know, maybe you're facing a

1104. circumstance or a situation right

1105. now that you realize is beyond

  1106. your power.

  1107. It's beyond your ability.

  1108. Spend time praying.

1109. Spend time pleading with God if

  1110. necessary.

1111. Spend time lifting that up to

  1112. you.

1113. First Peter says, cast all of our

1114. burdens on him and trust him

1115. because he cares for us.

1116. Trust that he will work in that

  1117. situation.

1118. There's also another message to us

  1119. here.

1120. We get so comfortable, don't we,

1121. at times doing church, being the

1122. Christian, carrying out the work of

  1123. the church.

  1124. You know, we've, many of you've

  1125. been a Christian 40, 50, 60, 70

1126. years and we get so comfortable

1127. that we think we can handle things

1128. in our own strength and our own

1129. power and our own abilities.

  1130. But you know what?

1131. If you look at the church in

1132. America today, we have more

  1133. resources, whether it's money,

1134. technology, we have more things

1135. available to us to carry out the

1136. work of God and yet we're seeing a

  1137. decline of the church.

1138. And so if we can do what Christ had

1139. called us to do in our own power and

1140. our own strength and our own

1141. resources, we had already done it.

  1142. But we can't.

1143. When we try to do what God has

1144. called us to do, to take the gospel

1145. message to the world, we've got to

1146. make sure we're doing that through

1147. prayer and total, total, total

1148. dependence upon Jesus Christ and his

1149. power and his ability to work in and

  1150. through us.

  1151. Jesus said in John 15, 5,

1152. I am the vine, you are the branches.

1153. If a man remains in me and I in him, he

  1154. will bear much fruit.

1155. Some of y'all who've done experience in

  1156. God, help me.

  1157. But apart from me,

  1158. you can do nothing.

  1159. What does that mean?

1160. You can do some things?

1161. You can do a portion of things?

  1162. Speak it.

  1163. Speak it.

  1164. Come on.

  1165. Nothing.

1166. That means we as children of God can do

1167. nothing if we're not abiding in Christ

1168. and relying completely and totally in

1169. him to do the work in us.

1170. So as a church this morning, as a family,

1171. as an individual, when you realize God

1172. is leading us, whether it's to take the

1173. gospel to the world, whether it's to do

1174. vacation Bible school, whether it's to

1175. sing in the choir, what do we learn from

  1176. this passage?

1177. We can do nothing in and of ourselves.

1178. We should get, if you're in the choir,

1179. get up early on Sunday morning.

1180. Stay up late on Saturday night and pray

1181. and ask God to use the gift and talent

1182. that he's bestowed upon you to bring

1183. glory to him and to lead others in

  1184. worship because when you're singing a

1185. song up here, you're not just up here

  1186. entertaining.

1187. You're leading us in worship.

1188. Whether we go out to do Bible school,

  1189. don't just say, well, I'm a teacher.

1190. I know how to teach the word.

1191. Spend time in prayer asking God to give

  1192. you every word.

  1193. Give you patience.

1194. Speak into the hearts of these children.

1195. Whether we're teaching a Sunday school class

1196. or working in the youth or being an usher.

  1197. property and grounds.

1198. Whatever we do, do it in the name of Jesus

1199. and spend time in prayer.

  1200. Pray, pray, pray.

1201. Asking God to use our church to be a lighthouse

1202. in this community and take the gospel message

1203. out of the walls of this building

1204. and into our community, into families,

  1205. into homes.

1206. Let's break down the walls of drug addiction

  1207. in this community.

1208. Let's break down the walls of broken homes

  1209. and broken marriages.

1210. In case y'all don't know, drugs have become

1211. an epidemic inside our schools.

1212. And we need to pray and pray and pray

1213. that God is working, that God is moving,

  1214. that God is stirring.

1215. In case you also haven't noticed,

1216. we need a revival in America.

1217. We are so desperate for God,

1218. but we're not going to do it in our own strength,

  1219. in our own power.

1220. We've got to rely on Jesus Christ

1221. to work in and through us,

1222. to work through our churches,

1223. work through our sister churches,

  1224. work through pastors,

1225. raise up pastors all across this land

1226. to proclaim the word of God

1227. in power and in strength

1228. and to bring us as a nation back to Him.

1229. I want to ask the musicians

1230. if they'll come and begin leading us this morning

1231. in our time of invitation.

1232. Now I just want to ask you,

1233. is God speaking to you today?

1234. Is He speaking to your hearts,

  1235. drawing Him to you?

1236. If you need to make a decision this morning,

1237. I would just ask you to respond

1238. during this time of invitation.

1239. I'll be glad to pray with you here.

1240. Let's stand as we sing.
