  1. If you have your Bibles this morning, I want you to turn to Luke chapter 8.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  2. Luke chapter 8.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  3. It is a joy to be back.

  4. I had a wedding that I had already planned and was in Mississippi doing that last weekend.

  5. Missed being here.

  6. Missed being in my spot.

  7. But I'm thankful for the opportunity to go back.

  8. And I did my part.

  9. Now they've got to work out the rest of it.

  10. But I was able to do that.

  11. Glad to have Dawn here this morning.

  12. We realized on this move that this would be a summer of transition.

  13. We didn't know all that would be entailed in it.

  14. And everything is glorious except the fact that we're trying to sell and trying to buy.

  15. And so just to give you an understanding, yesterday during our picnic together, I was waiting to get a word on whether a property was for sale.

  16. And also having to make a decision of whether I was going to, we were going to buy a house on a deadline by 3 p.m.

  17. So I was trying to get across to the person who may know about the property and find out about that.

  18. At the same time, I had the real estate agent telling me, you're running out of time.

  19. You're running out of time.

  20. You know?

  21. And here I am greeting people, not only in our church, but throughout our community.

  22. It was kind of chaotic, quite honestly.

  23. But we paused a moment because I don't think God's the God of chaos.

  24. And we're going to trust him either today or tomorrow or whenever it comes to work those things out.

  25. So are you all praying?

  26. I just thought I'd remind you and give you a little update in case you ask.

  27. Sometimes when people ask them, I share kind of where we're at.

  28. And then somebody else asks, and I share again where we're at.

  29. And then somebody else asks.

  30. Anyway.

  31. I don't know about you, but I love a good story.

  32. I don't know anybody that don't love a good story.

  33. And I realize everybody's not a reader.

  34. I do read.

  35. I go through seasons of it especially.

  36. And I read stories.

  37. I listen to stories.

  38. When I walk, I listen to stories.

  39. I also watch stories.

  40. Now, when I say I watch stories, I'm not talking about soap operas, okay?

  41. I guess they're almost gone now.

  42. But I used to hear ladies talk about watching their stories.

  43. And if you ever went and visited somebody in their home or in a nursing home in the afternoon,

  44. you better be careful because you might interrupt a story.

  45. They always want to be respectful of the preacher.

  46. But, man, they sure didn't want to miss out on what was ever happening to Luke and Laura or Bo and Hope

  47. or some of them people.

  48. Somebody knows who I'm talking about.

  49. I can tell.

  50. But anyway, soap operas made daytime television become synonymous with bad television.

  51. You know, they really did.

  52. And now the craving calls for Netflix and Prime Video and we love our stories.

  53. But whether it's a secret love of soap operas

  54. or the one that reads Amish love stories that fill up too big a part of too many church libraries,

  55. everybody loves a good story.

  56. And more than almost any story, I love front porch stories from old wise men

  57. who talk about the way it used to be, I guess.

  58. I thank God for those lessons along the way.

  59. But I will tell you that the greatest stories are those that are shared by the Lord Jesus.

  60. He is the master teacher.

  61. And he taught in a variety of ways.

  62. And one of the ways that he taught was to throw in little stories along the way.

  63. They're called parables.

  64. That term is used 48 times in the New Testament in reference to the stories that Jesus told.

  65. That word parable literally means to be thrown aside or to be placed alongside.

  66. And that's exactly what he did.

  67. As he shared biblical truths, scriptural truths with folks,

  68. he would tell them a story that would meet them right where they were.

  69. For instance, this morning we're going to look at an agrarian story.

  70. It was an agrarian society in which he lived in.

  71. There were a lot of farmers that he dealt with.

  72. And therefore he related to them just the way they understood it.

  73. I'm thankful that we serve a God that meets us where we are,

  74. speaks to us in a way that we can understand.

  75. We just have to respond in obedience.

  76. So for most of the several upcoming weeks,

  77. when I say most, I know that Father's Day is coming up.

  78. And I bless ladies on Mother's Day.

  79. And I beat up men on Father's Day.

  80. That's what you're supposed to do, I think.

  81. And then I believe that we have an independence in this country

  82. that we ought to thank God for and we ought to do something to protect.

  83. And so we'll take some time to talk about what our role is as Christians

  84. in the America in which we live.

  85. But besides those matters, we'll spend a lot of this summer

  86. talking about the parables of Jesus out of the gospel of Luke.

  87. There are no parables in the gospel of John.

  88. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are known as the synoptic gospels.

  89. Easy for me to say.

  90. Meaning that they share a lot of the same stories along the way.

  91. And nobody retells these stories with more color or detail than Luke.

  92. A physician by trade, he gets to the nitty-gritty details on matters and shares with us.

  93. And we begin with a very popular parable, one you're probably familiar with.

  94. But I picked this one in the midst of the other stories because in the midst of this story

  95. and in the explanation of the story,

  96. Jesus shares why he uses parables.

  97. Why do we even need to study them to start with?

  98. Why was he using them?

  99. So I want to begin by us seeing the story.

  100. And then here in this passage, he gives us the explanation for the story

  101. and then tells us why he'd use the stories anyway.

  102. Pretty unique passage.

  103. Luke chapter 8, beginning in verse 4, it says this.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  104. And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him,

  105. he said in a parable, a sower went out to sow his seed.

  106. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot,

  107. and the birds of the air devoured it.

  108. And some fell on the rock and it grew up and withered away because it had no moisture.

  109. And some fell among thorns and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.

  110. And some fell into good seed and grew and yielded a hundredfold.

  111. And as he said these things, he called out,

  112. he who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  113. Let's pray together.

  114. Lord Jesus, it is my prayer today that you will give us the spiritual ears we need

  115. to hear what you would have to say to us.

  116. Lord, we know that the soil of our souls are different.

  117. Some days, different than others.

  118. But your seed is the same.

  119. So God, as you give us the seed of your word today,

  120. help us, Lord, to be receptive, to be obedient,

  121. to allow you to speak to our hearts and lives.

  122. I particularly am burdened this morning for one who may be here,

  123. who's never acknowledged you as personal Lord and Savior.

  124. May today be the day of salvation, O Lord.

  125. In Jesus' name, amen.

  126. A good question for us to focus on when we look at this passage is,

  127. is the emphasis on the sower, because it's often called the parable of the sower,

  128. is the emphasis on the one slinging the seed,

  129. or is it on the seed, or is it on the soil?

  130. And it really depends on where you put your focus,

  131. because if you want to speak of the faithfulness of the worker,

  132. you speak of the sower.

  133. And if you want to speak of the power of the product,

  134. you mention the seed.

  135. And if you want to speak of the one who receives it,

  136. you speak of the soil,

  137. because there's different spoils respond in different ways,

  138. and some fail to respond to the seed in different ways.

  139. But Jesus goes on immediately and explains the meaning of this story

  140. when he says in verse 11,

  141. now, the parable is this,

  142. the seed is the word of God,

  143. the one along the path are those who've heard,

  144. then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts,

  145. so that they may not believe and be saved.

  146. And the one on the rock are those who,

  147. when they hear the word, receive it with joy,

  148. but they have no root,

  149. they believe for a while,

  150. and in time of testing fall away.

  151. And as for what fell among the thorns,

  152. there are those who hear,

  153. but as they go on their way,

  154. they're choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life,

  155. and their fruit does not mature.

  156. As for those in the good soil,

  157. there are those who,

  158. hearing the word,

  159. hold it fast,

  160. in an honest and good heart,

  161. and bear fruit with patience.

  162. Therefore, there are three important parts to this story that we ought to get.

  163. The one is the throwing of the seed,

  164. slinging seed.

  165. The seed is the word of God.

  166. It is the gospel message of Christ,

  167. and no one will hear it or have a chance to personally respond to it

  168. if it's not thrown out before them.

  169. If the seed of the word of God has changed your life,

  170. listen to me, Christian.

  171. You have a responsibility.

  172. We have a responsibility to throw some seed ourselves.

  173. We don't just rely on the preacher to do it on Sunday.

  174. We throw some seed ourselves.

  175. I don't pick that up from this story, honestly.

  176. I pick it up from what Jesus said in so many other places.

  177. I pick it up in what the Apostle Paul said often.

  178. I pick it up in what John taught us.

  179. I pick it up in what Peter said,

  180. and what each one of them did with such a passion.

  181. They gave their lives for the message that changed their lives.

  182. And so if your life has been changed by the gospel,

  183. you gave your life to Christ.

  184. It's no longer yours.

  185. Sow seed with it.

  186. Share with somebody what God has done in your life.

  187. There's the throwing of the seed.

  188. There's also the potential of the seed.

  189. A farmer does not know how successful the seed will be

  190. when he throws it on the ground.

  191. He does not know.

  192. There are predictors along the way,

  193. but farmers tell me that you never know what will happen

  194. from the time the seed is thrown to the harvest time.

  195. You pray for the best.

  196. For the last 15 years, I pastored a church

  197. that was surrounded by soybean fields and sweet potato fields.

  198. Vardaman, Mississippi, eight miles from the sweet potato capital of the world.

  199. Self-diagnosed.

  200. But anyway, that's what they did.

  201. And they were taxed when I left

  202. because fertilizer is high and it ain't raining enough

  203. and all those things.

  204. I was, when I was looking at this passage of scripture one time,

  205. I text one of my farmers.

  206. I said, is there any way you know?

  207. You know.

  208. He said, well, we get hints.

  209. But there's no way we can know the success of the product

  210. unless we put it in the ground and trust God to see what happens.

  211. You pray for the best.

  212. And even with their concerns, they still throw in seed.

  213. When circumstances run them late, they start late.

  214. They stay up late, but they still plant the seed.

  215. And if the seed is the gospel here, which it is,

  216. and there will be no gospel spread

  217. unless it is thrown out by those

  218. who God has not only commissioned

  219. but empowered to do that,

  220. then we need to get busy throwing it out.

  221. W.A. Criswell pastored First Baptist Dallas for 50 years.

  222. He's a legendary pastor.

  223. And he's known to have preached through the whole Bible,

  224. verse by verse, during those 50 years

  225. when he would get up and preach.

  226. But one Sunday he stood up

  227. and he merely read over the proposed budget.

  228. Now, I will tell you that the proposed budget

  229. of First Baptist Dallas, there's nothing merely about it, okay?

  230. But he stood up and read over the proposed budget.

  231. He talked about the ministry

  232. ministry that came through each line item

  233. and how the money that went into that line item

  234. would be used for ministry.

  235. He talked about the missions

  236. that were supported through that ministry.

  237. He talked about the day-to-day responsibilities

  238. and obligations in the facility itself.

  239. He talked about the importance of faithful tithing,

  240. faithful giving.

  241. And when he came to the end,

  242. he gave the invitation.

  243. And a dozen people came down the aisle

  244. and got saved.

  245. How?

  246. Why?

  247. It had little to do to nothing to do

  248. with what he said that Sunday morning.

  249. The people in the pew had scattered seed

  250. all week long.

  251. One people to the Lord,

  252. brought them to church with them

  253. and let them come down

  254. and be recognized publicly

  255. for the decision they made privately

  256. in their heart and life.

  257. Don't ever be mistaken, folks.

  258. What happens on Sunday during worship

  259. has as much, if not more,

  260. to do with what happened in our lives

  261. during the week

  262. than it does what happens

  263. in this very hour.

  264. We influence this hour

  265. by how we respond to it

  266. throughout the week.

  267. However,

  268. when we've grown in the Lord,

  269. when we've scattered some seed

  270. of the gospel,

  271. when we've invited folks to be here,

  272. when we've been prayed up

  273. before we come

  274. and we ask God to work

  275. and we move in our midst,

  276. God inhabits the praise of his people.

  277. He honors a people

  278. that is hungry and pursuant.

  279. And it's not that we deserve it.

  280. It's not that somehow we can earn it.

  281. It's not that somehow he's required

  282. to do something in response

  283. to what we do.

  284. simply God honors it.

  285. He honors people

  286. who are willing to stand boldly

  287. and proclaim his message.

  288. You say, well, preacher, you know,

  289. I don't know that's something

  290. y'all talk about.

  291. I think about a college football game.

  292. Y'all probably know something about that.

  293. Put those outlandish stickers on your car.

  294. You got stuff hanging out the trunk

  295. headed down the highway.

  296. The prep for tailgate

  297. is quite amazing, quite honestly.

  298. The work that goes into that.

  299. We dress like everybody else.

  300. Go to those ball games

  301. and everybody matches, you know.

  302. You go to church

  303. and somebody has the same outfit on you,

  304. do it, kills you.

  305. But you go to a ball game,

  306. everybody's got the same outfit on you.

  307. You love it, you know.

  308. It just fires you up that much more, you know.

  309. Can you imagine

  310. if God's people

  311. got that fired up

  312. about worshiping the Lord Jesus?

  313. I mean, I know that's a preacher comment.

  314. I know it is.

  315. But I mean, think about that.

  316. Think about how you anticipate.

  317. You anticipate.

  318. You anticipate

  319. and look forward to

  320. watching what's going to happen

  321. in that ball game.

  322. Watching your team succeed

  323. and get excited about that

  324. and do all kinds of that.

  325. The reality is,

  326. can you imagine

  327. if God's people

  328. got that fired up

  329. about worshiping the Lord Jesus?

  330. Brian, I'll tell you,

  331. they'd sing different,

  332. wouldn't they?

  333. You know?

  334. If you ever get a glimpse

  335. of the power

  336. of the seed

  337. of the gospel,

  338. not only will it change your lives,

  339. but God's going to allow you

  340. to see lives changed

  341. right before you

  342. as you share it faithfully.

  343. And that brings you

  344. not only to the potential seed,

  345. but the response to the seed.

  346. Because the soil represents

  347. the different stages

  348. of people's mind,

  349. the different stages

  350. of people's heart,

  351. and the heart of those

  352. that hear it

  353. and how they respond to it.

  354. There are those

  355. that hear it

  356. with a closed mind.

  357. That's that seed

  358. that falls along the path

  359. and are trampled

  360. or eaten by birds.

  361. That hard soil

  362. represents those

  363. who hear God's word

  364. and they choose

  365. not to understand it.

  366. They choose

  367. not to respond to it.

  368. Some people

  369. that you share with,

  370. you'll do it

  371. with closed ears.

  372. They've attended church

  373. with a closed mind.

  374. They are determined

  375. not to do anything

  376. no matter what God

  377. says for them to do

  378. before they ever

  379. have a conversation,

  380. before they ever

  381. enter into a church building.

  382. Their minds

  383. are closed

  384. to any suggestion

  385. that they don't

  386. want to follow.

  387. And when our minds

  388. are closed

  389. to whatever,

  390. if you've never

  391. given your heart

  392. and life

  393. to the Lord Jesus Christ

  394. or if you are

  395. a Christian

  396. and know beyond

  397. a shadow of it,

  398. I want you to hear me

  399. this morning.

  400. if your mind

  401. is closed

  402. to any suggestion

  403. that God would have

  404. for you today,

  405. that anything

  406. God would tell you today,

  407. Satan can easily

  408. snatch a truth

  409. and allow you

  410. to miss that truth

  411. because you had

  412. a closed mind

  413. coming in.

  414. And there are those

  415. with a cloudy mind.

  416. Some seeds

  417. of the gospel

  418. fall on rocky soil

  419. and they may

  420. shoot up quick,

  421. but they fade

  422. just as fast.

  423. Maybe they get

  424. caught up in the emotion

  425. of it

  426. and don't really mean it

  427. or maybe tragedy

  428. strikes their life.

  429. The rug is ripped out

  430. from under them

  431. or maybe sin

  432. catches up with them

  433. and they get a thrill

  434. and a chill

  435. from personal change

  436. to come

  437. but when the worship

  438. hour is over,

  439. so is their

  440. religious experience.

  441. A lot of folks

  442. that walk down the aisle

  443. in the Baptist church

  444. get baptized

  445. but they never

  446. get saved.

  447. And that's why

  448. you'll notice

  449. that sometimes

  450. you might see

  451. somebody come down

  452. the aisle,

  453. you might see

  454. somebody baptized,

  455. you may never

  456. see them again.

  457. There's probably

  458. people on the roll

  459. of the church

  460. that have hardly

  461. darkened the doors

  462. of the church

  463. since they ever

  464. joined the church.

  465. Why is that?

  466. Well, I'll tell you

  467. why some,

  468. I can't tell you

  469. particularly each individual

  470. but I can tell you

  471. this,

  472. there's some folks

  473. on a membership

  474. in a local

  475. Baptist church

  476. that are lost

  477. without Christ.

  478. They never truly

  479. surrendered their life

  480. to the Lord.

  481. They're confused

  482. about the circumstances,

  483. clouded by the world

  484. in which around them

  485. and as soon as

  486. Monday comes,

  487. you know,

  488. the trial,

  489. that they fall apart

  490. and fall away

  491. because they don't

  492. know Christ

  493. or who they could

  494. be in Him.

  495. real salvation

  496. does not roll off

  497. you like a duck's

  498. back.

  499. It is not in one ear

  500. and out the other.

  501. Some miss it

  502. due to a cloudy mind.

  503. Then there's others

  504. who miss it

  505. because of a cluttered

  506. mind.

  507. They don't follow

  508. the Lord in their life

  509. because they've got

  510. a cluttered mind.

  511. The world's full

  512. of distractions

  513. and all those

  514. distractions can choke

  515. out the Word of God.

  516. The world promises

  517. a lot but provides

  518. nothing that really

  519. lasts and people

  520. place too much value

  521. on stuff.

  522. stuff that will

  523. not last

  524. and it takes

  525. over their lives.

  526. Jesus said

  527. you cannot serve

  528. both God

  529. and money

  530. and it's true

  531. about the things

  532. you spend money

  533. on as well

  534. and when the mind

  535. is cluttered

  536. the thorns

  537. of the soil

  538. will snuff

  539. the seed

  540. of His promises.

  541. And then sometimes

  542. the seed

  543. falls

  544. on those

  545. with a committed

  546. mind.

  547. That soil

  548. is fruitful

  549. because it

  550. receives the seed

  551. and lets the message

  552. grow and take root

  553. in their lives.

  554. They're the human

  555. blessings of the church

  556. quite honestly.

  557. They're the ones

  558. that encourage

  559. other people.

  560. They're the ones

  561. that witness

  562. for the Lord Jesus.

  563. They're the ones

  564. that do the work

  565. of the church.

  566. They are faithful

  567. to gather for worship.

  568. They are faithful

  569. to grow in the Lord.

  570. They are faithful

  571. to share as they go.

  572. They are faithful

  573. to give as God

  574. gives them opportunity.

  575. These are the ones

  576. that make the church

  577. strong.

  578. These are the ones

  579. that grow this church.

  580. These are the ones

  581. that change the world

  582. for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  583. Their mind is committed.

  584. God,

  585. whatever

  586. your seed

  587. you want to place

  588. in my life today,

  589. I'm ready to receive it.

  590. I'm ready to respond

  591. to what you would

  592. have me to do.

  593. Oh, how I thank God

  594. for the committed minds

  595. and hearts

  596. and lives

  597. in the church

  598. of Jesus Christ.

  599. It's kind of amazing

  600. to me,

  601. quite honestly,

  602. to have lived

  603. in this area

  604. and then been gone

  605. 15 years

  606. and come back

  607. and there's a vague

  608. acquaintance.

  609. Some of us

  610. knew each other.

  611. There's a vague

  612. acquaintance

  613. with some others.

  614. Some I don't know.

  615. Some of you have come

  616. within the last 15 years

  617. or we vaguely saw

  618. or you avoided me

  619. when I was here before.

  620. Whatever,

  621. you know.

  622. What's amazing to me

  623. to see how God

  624. is working

  625. and moving

  626. in the hearts

  627. and lives

  628. of folks

  629. that I'm just

  630. getting acquainted

  631. with and knowing

  632. and watching

  633. that that same

  634. spirit of God

  635. stirred me

  636. to be a part

  637. of this

  638. is the same

  639. spirit of God

  640. that's stirring

  641. in the hearts

  642. of those

  643. who are committed.

  644. Their minds

  645. are set.

  646. We're going to do

  647. what God wants us

  648. to do.

  649. I don't know about you

  650. but that's exciting

  651. for me.

  652. To know that I don't

  653. understand everything

  654. about God's plan

  655. and I got some

  656. questions along the way

  657. that me and him

  658. take up every morning

  659. but to know

  660. that before

  661. the foundations

  662. of the earth

  663. God knew

  664. there'd be a divine

  665. appointment

  666. of this time

  667. in our lives

  668. where people

  669. would be joined

  670. together

  671. and be committed

  672. to do a work

  673. of the Lord

  674. and allow him

  675. to do whatever

  676. he wants to do

  677. in our midst

  678. and to get on

  679. that page

  680. together

  681. and to watch

  682. how he's prepared

  683. that before

  684. I ever got here

  685. and how he prepared

  686. my heart

  687. for it before

  688. that's exciting

  689. to me

  690. because that's

  691. how he plants

  692. seeds

  693. and the soil

  694. takes it in

  695. receives it

  696. commits to it

  697. I'm thankful

  698. for committed lives

  699. and hearts

  700. and minds

  701. in the church

  702. of Jesus Christ.

  703. now in the midst

  704. of this story

  705. and this explanation

  706. there's an excursion

  707. Jesus tells us

  708. in the midst

  709. of this story

  710. why he uses

  711. parables

  712. and what their

  713. purpose is

  714. and it's not easy

  715. to understand

  716. but we need to

  717. because he says

  718. in verse 9 and 10

  719. he says

  720. and when his disciples

  721. asked him

  722. what this parable

  723. meant

  724. he said

  725. to you

  726. it has been

  727. given

  728. to know

  729. the secrets

  730. of the kingdom

  731. of God

  732. but for others

  733. they are

  734. in the parable

  735. so that seeing

  736. they may not see

  737. and hearing

  738. they may not

  739. understand

  740. now that last

  741. phrase there

  742. in verse 10

  743. is from Isaiah

  744. when the prophet

  745. is led by God

  746. in that awesome

  747. worship time

  748. in Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  749. and the message

  750. is this

  751. that the parables

  752. as did

  753. the prophetic

  754. word

  755. in Isaiah

  756. serves two capacities

  757. one is

  758. they encourage

  759. the believer

  760. he mentions here

  761. the secrets

  762. of the kingdom

  763. the secret

  764. of the kingdom

  765. is that as much

  766. as I share

  767. with you

  768. what Jesus

  769. means to me

  770. and how he's

  771. changed my life

  772. you'll never

  773. know what I'm

  774. talking about

  775. until you

  776. experience it

  777. if you jump

  778. out of planes

  779. where you're

  780. nuts

  781. number one

  782. but if you

  783. jump out of planes

  784. you can try

  785. to explain to me

  786. what that's like

  787. and I am not

  788. going to get it

  789. okay

  790. I mean

  791. the only way

  792. you can really

  793. know that

  794. is to strap

  795. a backpack

  796. on your back

  797. and jump out

  798. of a perfectly

  799. good plane

  800. and hope

  801. everything works

  802. out on the way

  803. down

  804. that's either

  805. faith or something

  806. else

  807. but whatever

  808. there's no way

  809. I can experience

  810. that

  811. unless I do

  812. it

  813. and the reality

  814. is

  815. living for the

  816. Lord Jesus

  817. and surrendering

  818. your life

  819. to him

  820. and giving

  821. your life

  822. to Christ

  823. is the greatest

  824. decision that

  825. you'll ever

  826. make

  827. but you'll never

  828. realize that

  829. until you truly

  830. do it

  831. you'll never be

  832. able to grasp

  833. it unless you

  834. do it

  835. and the mystery

  836. of how God

  837. works and moves

  838. in lives

  839. is hard to

  840. explain

  841. but it's pretty

  842. wonderful to

  843. experience

  844. and those are

  845. the secrets

  846. are the mysteries

  847. that word

  848. the apostle Paul

  849. uses the word

  850. mystery a lot

  851. when he talks

  852. about the mystery

  853. of the gospel

  854. and literally

  855. in that language

  856. not in our language

  857. but in that language

  858. it means the same

  859. thing as a secret

  860. in other words

  861. there are mysteries

  862. or secrets

  863. the gospel

  864. there are matters

  865. of our relationship

  866. with the Lord

  867. that you'll never

  868. get until you

  869. surrender your life

  870. to follow him

  871. and trust him

  872. the mystery

  873. of how God

  874. works and moves

  875. in our lives

  876. it's hard to

  877. explain

  878. but it's pretty

  879. wonderful to

  880. experience

  881. and those are

  882. the secrets

  883. of the mysteries

  884. we're not

  885. keeping them

  886. from you

  887. if you don't

  888. know the Lord

  889. you're missing

  890. them

  891. because you

  892. don't have

  893. Jesus

  894. and these

  895. stories

  896. just back

  897. all those

  898. truths up

  899. they help us

  900. better understand

  901. it

  902. but then he

  903. also says

  904. here

  905. that these

  906. stories are

  907. also

  908. they're missed

  909. by the stubborn

  910. it's a hard

  911. truth but it's

  912. real

  913. some people

  914. ain't gonna

  915. get it

  916. you can scatter

  917. all the seed

  918. you want to

  919. they're not

  920. gonna get it

  921. and a lack

  922. of belief

  923. can be stubborn

  924. it can be

  925. deliberate

  926. and at times

  927. it can be

  928. unchanging

  929. when people

  930. hear the word

  931. of God

  932. they're accountable

  933. to it

  934. and when they

  935. miss it

  936. they're not

  937. and God

  938. in his mercy

  939. let some

  940. not even

  941. get the parable

  942. so that their

  943. hearts would not

  944. grow more stubborn

  945. through their

  946. rejection

  947. because to whom

  948. much is given

  949. much is required

  950. if you don't

  951. understand these

  952. stories you're not

  953. responsible for

  954. them

  955. their curiosity

  956. may be aroused

  957. but they may

  958. follow him

  959. and want to know

  960. more but they

  961. will not fully

  962. grasp what he's

  963. saying through

  964. these stories

  965. and now that

  966. is tough to

  967. understand

  968. but that's what

  969. Christ is saying

  970. he's saying

  971. everybody's not

  972. gonna get it

  973. so what does that

  974. mean for us

  975. because I'll tell you

  976. there's a tendency

  977. there's a tendency

  978. not among us

  979. but among other

  980. people

  981. that because some

  982. people aren't

  983. gonna get it

  984. and because it's

  985. not gonna be

  986. welcomed by

  987. everybody

  988. let's just not

  989. bother sharing

  990. it a whole lot

  991. I mean we want

  992. the church to

  993. stand strong

  994. and testify

  995. and be known

  996. for that

  997. but on a

  998. personal basis

  999. if I'm gonna

  1000. risk a friendship

  1001. with somebody

  1002. by approaching

  1003. their spirituality

  1004. I just

  1005. soon just

  1006. just what

  1007. just what

  1008. how important

  1009. is your friendship

  1010. how much does

  1011. that matter

  1012. and how good

  1013. a friend are

  1014. you

  1015. let me tell you

  1016. something

  1017. if I ever do

  1018. get home

  1019. in Pickens

  1020. and you ride

  1021. by and there's

  1022. flames coming

  1023. out of the

  1024. windows

  1025. at two o'clock

  1026. in the morning

  1027. please don't be

  1028. bothered by waking

  1029. me up

  1030. you know

  1031. just go ahead

  1032. and knock on

  1033. the door

  1034. just go ahead

  1035. and let me

  1036. know

  1037. please

  1038. when people's

  1039. lives are in

  1040. the balance

  1041. sometimes we

  1042. have to step

  1043. out and trust

  1044. the God that

  1045. gave us the

  1046. seed is the

  1047. same God that

  1048. has put me in

  1049. this spot

  1050. to share this

  1051. truth with this

  1052. person

  1053. and I've got to

  1054. trust him for the

  1055. results

  1056. you know the

  1057. cool thing about

  1058. it is

  1059. is I'm not

  1060. responsible for

  1061. the results

  1062. I'm responsible

  1063. for the

  1064. faithfulness of

  1065. sharing the

  1066. testimony

  1067. of scattering

  1068. the seed

  1069. of throwing it

  1070. out

  1071. I can't control

  1072. the soil

  1073. man I can

  1074. sure throw

  1075. some seed

  1076. the truth of

  1077. the matter is

  1078. they'll be

  1079. missed by the

  1080. stubborn

  1081. so what does

  1082. all this mean

  1083. for us

  1084. how does this

  1085. play out

  1086. what does it

  1087. really mean

  1088. get this and

  1089. we'll close

  1090. food trucks

  1091. waiting

  1092. scatter some

  1093. seed

  1094. Christians

  1095. share your

  1096. faith

  1097. the world's

  1098. coming to an

  1099. end

  1100. and we need

  1101. to get up

  1102. off our

  1103. worshipful

  1104. premises

  1105. and get out

  1106. and share the

  1107. love of Christ

  1108. with a world

  1109. that desperately

  1110. needs Christ

  1111. don't you think

  1112. this world

  1113. needs Christ

  1114. I mean is that

  1115. not obvious

  1116. that it's dark

  1117. man a little

  1118. light will change

  1119. the whole room

  1120. really will

  1121. you got to

  1122. trust the

  1123. message

  1124. you got to

  1125. trust the

  1126. God of the

  1127. message

  1128. scatter some

  1129. seed

  1130. and then

  1131. trust the

  1132. Lord of the

  1133. harvest

  1134. trust him

  1135. the seed

  1136. will bring

  1137. forth fruit

  1138. you cannot

  1139. read the

  1140. soil

  1141. do you hear

  1142. me

  1143. you can't

  1144. read the

  1145. soil

  1146. God

  1147. honors the

  1148. process

  1149. share your

  1150. faith and

  1151. watch God

  1152. move

  1153. throw some

  1154. seed on

  1155. some hard

  1156. ground and

  1157. see what

  1158. happens

  1159. may not be

  1160. as hard as

  1161. you think

  1162. it is

  1163. and third

  1164. don't be

  1165. stubborn

  1166. don't be

  1167. stubborn

  1168. if you don't

  1169. know the

  1170. Lord Jesus

  1171. today

  1172. don't be

  1173. stubborn

  1174. listen to

  1175. what he's

  1176. saying to

  1177. you

  1178. listen to

  1179. how the

  1180. Holy Spirit

  1181. speaks to

  1182. your life

  1183. and you

  1184. come to

  1185. him today

  1186. don't let

  1187. your crusty

  1188. heart grow

  1189. harder from

  1190. hearing the

  1191. gospel and

  1192. not responding

  1193. because that's

  1194. exactly what

  1195. happens

  1196. that's what he

  1197. told us

  1198. that happened

  1199. come to

  1200. Jesus

  1201. I am

  1202. thankful

  1203. that any

  1204. time I

  1205. stand up

  1206. here and

  1207. share with

  1208. you that I

  1209. can say with

  1210. confidence

  1211. that today

  1212. is the day

  1213. of salvation

  1214. same God

  1215. scattered seed

  1216. told stories

  1217. changed people's

  1218. lives

  1219. almost 2,000

  1220. years ago

  1221. the other week

  1222. I said over

  1223. 2,000 years

  1224. ago

  1225. that was

  1226. that's not

  1227. true

  1228. but almost

  1229. 2,000 years

  1230. ago

  1231. the same

  1232. God

  1233. did that

  1234. the same

  1235. God that

  1236. will use

  1237. you today

  1238. and allow

  1239. you to

  1240. impact

  1241. lives

  1242. greater

  1243. than your

  1244. ability

  1245. beyond

  1246. your

  1247. perspective

  1248. beyond

  1249. what you

  1250. can imagine

  1251. I don't

  1252. know about

  1253. you

  1254. but I

  1255. don't want

  1256. to be a

  1257. part of

  1258. something

  1259. that we

  1260. can come

  1261. up with

  1262. I want

  1263. to be a

  1264. part of

  1265. something

  1266. that God

  1267. gets in

  1268. the middle

  1269. of

  1270. of people

  1271. who just

  1272. scatter seed

  1273. and trusted

  1274. for the

  1275. results

  1276. may God

  1277. touch our

  1278. heart

  1279. may we

  1280. respond

  1281. with

  1282. obedience

  1283. and may

  1284. he honor

  1285. our efforts

  1286. with every

  1287. head bowed

  1288. and every

  1289. eye closed

  1290. my burden

  1291. is always

  1292. that there's

  1293. a possibility

  1294. somebody

  1295. may be in

  1296. this place

  1297. who's never

  1298. given their

  1299. heart and

  1300. life to the

  1301. Lord Jesus

  1302. Christ

  1303. maybe

  1304. everybody

  1305. around you

  1306. thinks you

  1307. have but

  1308. the reality

  1309. is in

  1310. your heart

  1311. you never

  1312. have I

  1313. encourage you

  1314. to come

  1315. right now

  1316. come and

  1317. let God

  1318. change your

  1319. life we'd

  1320. love to

  1321. guide you

  1322. in that

  1323. process I

  1324. promise you

  1325. we got

  1326. time I

  1327. promise you

  1328. we'll take

  1329. the time

  1330. maybe you're

  1331. here this

  1332. morning and

  1333. you know

  1334. you're a

  1335. Christian but

  1336. the reality

  1337. is man

  1338. your seeds

  1339. in your

  1340. pocket

  1341. you're

  1342. scattering

  1343. anything

  1344. possibly not

  1345. even being

  1346. much of a

  1347. blessing to

  1348. folks around

  1349. you they

  1350. wouldn't want

  1351. to listen to

  1352. you anyway

  1353. maybe today's

  1354. the day of

  1355. renewal

  1356. Lord will you

  1357. change me will

  1358. you change my

  1359. heart will you

  1360. give me

  1361. opportunity

  1362. God as you

  1363. give me

  1364. opportunity will

  1365. you give me

  1366. the boldness

  1367. and the words

  1368. to walk through

  1369. those doors

  1370. of opportunity

  1371. God I'm

  1372. thankful that

  1373. I'm not

  1374. responsible for

  1375. what happens

  1376. without I'm

  1377. just responsible

  1378. for what I

  1379. do with it

  1380. so help me to

  1381. be faithful

  1382. maybe God's

  1383. drawing you

  1384. to be a part

  1385. of Pickens

  1386. First what a

  1387. blessing that

  1388. would be for

  1389. you to join

  1390. us in the

  1391. journey you

  1392. ain't perfect

  1393. neither are we

  1394. we're gonna do

  1395. it together until

  1396. Jesus comes and

  1397. so I encourage

  1398. you to just

  1399. simply obey God

  1400. and follow his

  1401. lead maybe you're

  1402. made a private

  1403. decision for God

  1404. but you've never

  1405. made it public

  1406. baptism the lack

  1407. of baptism in a

  1408. believer's life

  1409. is a hindrance

  1410. in their walk

  1411. with God

  1412. and it's also

  1413. a powerful

  1414. testimony that

  1415. changes other

  1416. people's lives

  1417. if you've never

  1418. been baptized as

  1419. a believer

  1420. then you come

  1421. let's work that

  1422. out we'll plan

  1423. for that together

  1424. Lord Jesus I

  1425. don't know what

  1426. you're speaking to

  1427. our hearts and

  1428. lives but I know

  1429. you're speaking

  1430. mine and so

  1431. God I ask this

  1432. morning Father that

  1433. you will work and

  1434. move in our midst

  1435. that we'll just

  1436. simply obey you

  1437. and trust you with

  1438. the results dear God

1439. lead us right now I

  1440. pray in Jesus

  1441. precious name

  1442. amen
