  1. If you have your Bible this morning, I want you to turn to Luke chapter 7.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  2. Luke chapter 7.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  3. Jesus loved children, and he lived in a day and in a society where children were best

  4. not seen or heard, was the thought.

  5. And Jesus wanted to see them.

  6. And Jesus wanted to hear them.

  7. And he wanted them to hear him.

  8. He said in Matthew 19, verse 13, it says,

    Matthew 19:13

  9. Then children were brought to him, that he may lay his hands on them and pray, and the

  10. disciples rebuke the people.

  11. But Jesus said, Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs

  12. the kingdom of heaven.

  13. And he laid his hands on them and went away.

  14. Jesus is serious, not just talking about it.

  15. He's serious about receiving children, treating them right, and leading them toward Christ.

  16. And we need to do all we can as a church of the Lord Jesus Christ to welcome and nurture and

  17. to care for and to teach and to love children of the Lord.

  18. On that note, did you know we had sign-ups for Awana in the foyer?

  19. I think we have availability in the fall for children's Sunday school.

  20. And thank God we always have an ever-growing need for a willingness to help with child care.

  21. So if you care about children, you don't only say amen, and you don't only applaud, or you don't

  22. only go along with what's being said but are willing to help, text R.C., Jeff, or Jennifer,

  23. because they'd love to have it.

  24. And I'm not just preaching, folks.

  25. I'm telling the truth.

  26. We put our feet into action.

  27. We do it.

  28. Another time when he was with the disciples, they asked him who the greatest in the kingdom

  29. was because they were vying to be that person, that greatest in the kingdom.

  30. And in Matthew 18, he responded and he said,

  31. Truly I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you'll never enter the kingdom

  32. of heaven.

  33. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  34. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.

  35. But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it'd be better for

  36. him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the

  37. sea.

  38. Jesus doesn't play, folks.

  39. He's clear.

  40. It is important that we set a Christian example before those that are placed in front of us.

  41. And he's telling us to be childlike.

  42. Now listen, there's a difference in being childlike and being childish.

  43. And today in our passage, he shares a parable about being childish.

  44. He is referring to the Pharisees who are the church folk.

  45. They're the religious leaders.

  46. They're the proponents of the law.

  47. And the scribes called here lawyers, but they are those who interpret the law.

  48. They take the law that God established in the Old Testament and they interpret those laws

  49. and they made new rules on top of those and pretended as if those rules were just as important

  50. as God's law that was in Scripture.

  51. They thought their interpretations were just as important, if not more so, than what Scripture said.

  52. And it was in that misunderstanding that they often had conflict with Christ.

  53. They also didn't like his popularity because it took the emphasis off of them and put it on him.

  54. And so they had a tendency to stand in the back of the crowd and question, to look for some kind of hot point

  55. where they could point out something and somehow criticize.

  56. And Jesus knew their heart.

  57. He knew what they were up to.

  58. And so he spoke to them about it.

  59. He speaks to the religious upper crust.

  60. And he says, you're acting like children.

  61. Look at what he says.

  62. He says, it's in Luke chapter 7, verse 31, 32, it says this.

    Luke 7:31

  63. To what then shall I compare the people of this generation?

  64. And what are they like?

  65. They're like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,

  66. we play the flute for you and you didn't dance.

  67. We sang a dirge and you didn't weep.

  68. Folks, it's one thing to be childlike.

  69. It's another thing to be childish.

  70. But yet that is what God calls the people of that generation.

  71. He calls them childish by saying they are like children that cannot play together well.

  72. They're like children that are never satisfied.

  73. And he goes on to explain how some people are never satisfied.

  74. See, Jesus and John the Baptist came with two different approaches,

  75. but they came for the same cause.

  76. Yet most folks rejected both of them.

  77. He goes on to say in verse 33,

  78. for John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine.

  79. And you say, he has a demon.

  80. And the son of man has come eating and drinking.

  81. And you say, look at him, a glutton and a drunkard,

  82. a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

  83. Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.

  84. Now, John was quite a character.

  85. He was ministering and preaching on the outer skirts of town.

  86. His garments were those that reminded folks of a prophet.

  87. When scripture says he wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt,

  88. they're not exactly talking about our idea of a camel hair coat, okay?

  89. As we would think of today.

  90. Instead, he was wild-eyed, wild-haired, eating bugs and honey,

  91. looking like he just came from Woodstock.

  92. And if that personally offends some of you, well, sorry.

  93. Man, he was drawing a crowd, though.

  94. And he was telling them to repent of their sins.

  95. He was telling them to be baptized.

  96. And he was effective at it.

  97. People were coming.

  98. Lives were changing.

  99. And the Pharisees and the Sadducees came out to see what was up.

  100. And when he saw them, he called them the offspring of snakes

  101. and told them to bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

  102. He pulled no punches.

  103. And he said that if they didn't change,

  104. that God would chop them down like a tree in Matthew chapter 3.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  105. Now, that may influence people, but it sure doesn't win friends.

  106. And they didn't like him.

  107. They didn't like him.

  108. He also proclaimed a coming Messiah

  109. and ushered in the way that Christ would come.

  110. And when Christ came, John the Baptist got out of the way.

  111. Now, it's interesting, a little side note here.

  112. He was later imprisoned for his faith

  113. and was soon to be beheaded because of his boldness.

  114. And he asked his followers during that time of imprisonment

  115. to go to Jesus and ask if he was really the Messiah.

  116. What in the world does that mean?

  117. Because he came to prepare the way of the Lord.

  118. And he was so strong in his testimony.

  119. So why later did he question that or have them question it?

  120. And there are two possible reasons for that.

  121. One was that after he had been so strong

  122. and such a powerful testimony and then been imprisoned

  123. and now his death was looming,

  124. could be that he struggled some with that.

  125. Could be that he wondered.

  126. But it also could be as well

  127. that he was taking his disciples

  128. and turning them over to Jesus.

  129. So in other words, what he was saying was,

  130. and I believe this was the point,

  131. he was telling them,

  132. go ask Jesus who he is.

  133. Go find out for yourself who Jesus is.

  134. And it was in that kind of context

  135. with the pressure of the Pharisees and the Sadducees

  136. and their followers bearing down on Christ too,

  137. which was just the Pharisees and the Sadducees,

  138. just two political parties within the church.

  139. Just two different mindsets,

  140. some different theology,

  141. but both of them power mongers

  142. and both of them in the decision rooms of the church.

  143. And they were bearing down on Christ

  144. and that's when Christ speaks the passage

  145. that I read this morning.

  146. Basically what he's saying is this,

  147. God sent two men.

  148. One, he sent a prophet and a paver of the way for Christ.

  149. You didn't like him.

  150. Then he sends his only son

  151. and you don't like him.

  152. One is bold and brash and forceful.

  153. One is gentle, lowly and humble.

  154. And you want to do the opposite of either one of them,

  155. but yet their approaches are very different.

  156. But both are of God.

  157. In other words, Christ is telling us

  158. we ought to become childlike,

  159. but instead so often we become childish.

  160. It's like children at play.

  161. Children often when they play

  162. like to mimic life when they play.

  163. Little boys play with cars

  164. hoping one day to be able to drive.

  165. And little girls put towels on their head

  166. as if it was a veil

  167. looking forward to the day

  168. when they can be a bride.

  169. Or they play with dolls

  170. wanting to be like mommy.

  171. Or the kids play house

  172. and they pick different roles.

  173. And as they get older,

  174. they play school during the summer

  175. when they're out of school.

  176. They mimic what they see.

  177. And the two big ceremonies

  178. in the first century

  179. were funerals and weddings.

  180. And so that's what children saw.

  181. And so that's what they played.

  182. And Jesus speaks of children

  183. mimicking those things when they saw.

  184. They sang sad songs at funerals.

  185. Or they play a flute

  186. like the music of a wedding dance.

  187. However, sometimes children

  188. don't play along.

  189. And Jesus is saying,

  190. John took one approach

  191. and I took another approach

  192. and this generation

  193. has accepted neither.

  194. And if you accept neither,

  195. you miss the message

  196. of the Lord.

  197. I wish it was just that generation.

  198. The reality is

  199. there's a lot of good church people

  200. like us

  201. that are not receptive

  202. to the movement of God today.

  203. We can be a lot like the world

  204. when it comes to that sometimes.

  205. We can be spiritually childish.

  206. Why are we prone

  207. to be childish?

  208. And if you're sitting out there thinking,

  209. I'm not childish.

  210. Well, there you go.

  211. Why are we prone to be childish?

  212. One is,

  213. it could be the expectation

  214. that we have.

  215. We expected something different.

  216. I mean, sometimes people

  217. just want it their way.

  218. And it's not that there's

  219. really anything wrong

  220. with how something is happening.

  221. It's just not acceptable

  222. because it's not what I expected.

  223. I didn't think

  224. it was going to go this way.

  225. They didn't think

  226. John was going to continue

  227. to go after everyone's sin.

  228. That was his message.

  229. And he did it boldly

  230. and he kept on

  231. going after people's sin.

  232. We don't mind

  233. when you go after

  234. somebody else's sin.

  235. You know?

  236. I mean, you pounce

  237. on somebody else's sin.

  238. Woo-hoo!

  239. Go at it, preacher.

  240. You get them.

  241. Get them.

  242. But when you start

  243. messing with my sin,

  244. that's when it changes.

  245. John's message

  246. was to prepare

  247. the way of Christ

  248. by helping people

  249. see the need of Christ

  250. in the midst of a culture

  251. that did not see the need

  252. for a coming Savior.

  253. So he was the shock jock

  254. that came

  255. to wake everybody up

  256. to their need of God.

  257. John came

  258. to show them the dirt.

  259. Dirt.

  260. Jesus came

  261. to show that

  262. God will accept you

  263. dirt and all.

  264. People didn't expect

  265. that either.

  266. The thought was

  267. that people need

  268. to clean up.

  269. You clean up your life,

  270. then you can come to Christ.

  271. But the message of Christ

  272. is that you cannot

  273. clean yourself up.

  274. You don't have

  275. the innate ability

  276. to do that.

  277. Thank God today,

  278. I can say without reservation,

  279. you can come to Christ

  280. just as you are

  281. and he will change you.

  282. He'll empower you

  283. for change.

  284. He'll make the difference

  285. in your life.

  286. Come to Christ

  287. as you are.

  288. Christ will clean you up

  289. and some people,

  290. some good religious people,

  291. they don't like that.

  292. I mean,

  293. they just don't like it.

  294. If Christ accepts people

  295. as they are

  296. and changes them,

  297. then that means

  298. that we're supposed

  299. to help folks

  300. that are not like us.

  301. And we said

  302. we wanted to serve the Lord,

  303. but that's not

  304. what we had in mind.

  305. We had an idea

  306. about what we want to do.

  307. And then God

  308. puts people in our paths

  309. that's not exactly

  310. what we expect.

  311. And I've learned

  312. many times over

  313. that when you do

  314. what the Lord

  315. calls you to do,

  316. it's not always

  317. following your expectations.

  318. it's not always

  319. going to pan out

  320. like you thought it was.

  321. God may do

  322. a much different work

  323. than the way

  324. you anticipated

  325. it to be done.

  326. And some folks

  327. would rather

  328. trust their anticipation,

  329. let's just be honest,

  330. they'd rather trust

  331. their anticipation

  332. than they would

  333. the movement of the Lord.

  334. If you get too sold

  335. on your anticipation,

  336. you don't want to

  337. follow along

  338. with the Lord

  339. and what He's doing.

  340. And so we become childish

  341. because we thought

  342. it would be different.

  343. Another reason

  344. we tend to act childish

  345. toward Christ,

  346. excuse me,

  347. they tend to act childish

  348. before Christ.

  349. It could be

  350. the personal problems

  351. that we endure.

  352. For instance,

  353. children do not

  354. play good together

  355. when they're tired.

  356. we don't either.

  357. And sometimes

  358. we just get tired.

  359. Sometimes we just get tired.

  360. It's not that we're

  361. not doing a good work.

  362. Let me give you an example.

  363. Elijah was like that.

  364. Man, Elijah was

  365. a miracle worker of God.

  366. Did wonderful things.

  367. And then

  368. Elijah got tired.

  369. He got so tired

  370. he wanted to die

  371. and he laid down to die

  372. but God said,

  373. get up.

  374. And he gave him

  375. exactly what he needed.

  376. And I'm so thankful today

  377. that he'll do the same

  378. for us.

  379. Say, preacher,

  380. I'm tired.

  381. Well, yeah.

  382. We all get tired sometimes.

  383. And he invites us

  384. to come to him.

  385. Come to me,

  386. all you who are

  387. weak and heavy laden.

  388. I will give you

  389. rest.

  390. You'll find rest

  391. in the Lord.

  392. He'll take care of you.

  393. Not only that,

  394. children don't play good

  395. when they're hungry.

  396. And when they're too young

  397. to tell us they're hungry,

  398. they still have a way

  399. of letting us know

  400. they're hungry,

  401. don't they?

  402. Sometimes we get childish

  403. because we're hungry.

  404. That usually happens

  405. to y'all about 1155.

  406. Excuse me,

  407. we started earlier

  408. than that,

  409. didn't we?

  410. That just scared

  411. the wooly out

  412. of a lot of you,

  413. didn't it?

  414. Folks,

  415. when we get hungry

  416. for the things

  417. of the world,

  418. we're not satisfied

  419. because the appetite

  420. for the things

  421. of the world

  422. will never satisfy.

  423. It's like eating air.

  424. It's not going to satisfy.

  425. And unsatisfied people

  426. do not always go along

  427. with what God wants to do

  428. because they're unsatisfied.

  429. And so sometimes

  430. we get childish

  431. because we like it our way.

  432. And these kids

  433. in this parable

  434. did not get invited

  435. to play a game

  436. they wanted

  437. so they didn't go along.

  438. And sometimes

  439. the course that God

  440. has for us

  441. is different

  442. than our way.

  443. it's not exactly

  444. what we anticipated.

  445. It's not exactly

  446. what we feel like.

  447. And we get childish

  448. about it.

  449. Another reason

  450. people act childish

  451. toward God

  452. it could be

  453. the message

  454. that we hear.

  455. And I want to be clear

  456. about this

  457. and I'll close.

  458. The gospel

  459. is a two-sided

  460. message

  461. and you better

  462. proclaim

  463. both sides

  464. of that message

  465. or you'll have

  466. half the message

  467. filled with

  468. half truths.

  469. One side

  470. of the gospel message

  471. is that

  472. every one of us

  473. are sinners.

  474. Romans 3.23

  475. says

  476. for all

  477. have sinned

  478. and fall short

  479. of the glory

  480. of God.

  481. Now

  482. I want you

  483. to notice

  484. something.

  485. It says

  486. for all

  487. have sinned

  488. and fall

  489. short

  490. that verb

  491. is in a different

  492. tense

  493. and fall

  494. short

  495. of the glory

  496. of God.

  497. The glory

  498. of God

  499. is that

  500. revealing

  501. of God.

  502. It's when

  503. he shows

  504. himself

  505. and God

  506. has made

  507. us to be

  508. in relationship

  509. with him

  510. and to

  511. amplify

  512. and be a

  513. light of

  514. his message

  515. and his

  516. truth.

  517. And the

  518. reality is

  519. that every

  520. one of us

  521. have sinned

  522. and therefore

  523. failed to

  524. live up

  525. to what

  526. God made

  527. us for.

  528. We've all

  529. messed up.

  530. Now you don't

  531. like to hear

  532. that.

  533. I don't like

  534. to hear that.

  535. I don't like

  536. people pointing

  537. out the things

  538. I do wrong

  539. but the reality

  540. is it's there.

  541. We're all

  542. in the same

  543. boat.

  544. Without Christ

  545. we're hopeless.

  546. And that

  547. is the

  548. message of

  549. John the

  550. Baptist.

  551. That's what

  552. he said.

  553. However,

  554. many others

  555. did not

  556. like it.

  557. It was a

  558. funeral dirge

  559. and they

  560. didn't want

  561. to play

  562. funeral.

  563. They didn't

  564. want to hear

  565. about the

  566. death that

  567. comes from

  568. our sin.

  569. I'm thankful

  570. today there's

  571. another side of

  572. the gospel

  573. message because

  574. if there wasn't

  575. I wouldn't

  576. be here.

  577. There'd be

  578. no need

  579. for me to

  580. tell you

  581. that you're

  582. doomed.

  583. Go home.

  584. You have

  585. no hope.

  586. Nobody wants

  587. to hear that.

  588. You have

  589. to understand

  590. that to

  591. get the

  592. second half

  593. of the

  594. message.

  595. And sometimes

  596. you have to

  597. preach that

  598. and proclaim

  599. that and show

  600. that with

  601. more emphasis

  602. than you do

  603. the second

  604. half.

  605. But you

  606. can't preach

  607. half the

  608. truth.

  609. You've

  610. got to

  611. preach the

  612. whole truth.

  613. Second

  614. half of

  615. the truth

  616. is that

  617. the wages

  618. or the

  619. cost or

  620. the penalty

  621. of our

  622. sin is

  623. death.

  624. And in

  625. the New

  626. Testament when

  627. it speaks

  628. of death

  629. it's not

  630. talking about

  631. the heart

  632. stopping and

  633. the brain

  634. stop functioning.

  635. It's talking

  636. about the

  637. separation that

  638. comes from

  639. death.

  640. I lost

  641. my dear

  642. godly

  643. grandmother

  644. years ago

  645. and when

  646. she died

  647. I was

  648. sad.

  649. Why was

  650. I sad?

  651. Because she

  652. was going

  653. to heaven

  654. and her

  655. faith had

  656. become sight

  657. and everything

  658. that she had

  659. looked for

  660. now she was

  661. being fulfilled

  662. before her.

  663. No, not at

  664. all.

  665. I was sad

  666. because I was

  667. going to be

  668. separated her

  669. for as long

  670. as I live

  671. on this

  672. earth.

  673. It was the

  674. separation

  675. that was

  676. so difficult.

  677. It was not

  678. the destination

  679. of the one

  680. that believes

  681. in Christ.

  682. It was the

  683. separation.

  684. So when he

  685. says the cost

  686. or the

  687. penalty

  688. or the

  689. wage

  690. of sin

  691. is death.

  692. He says

  693. that it's

  694. separating us

  695. from God.

  696. But the

  697. free gift

  698. of God

  699. how many

  700. of you

  701. like a

  702. free gift?

  703. You know

  704. no strings

  705. attached

  706. you know

  707. the free

  708. gift of

  709. God

  710. is eternal

  711. life through

  712. Jesus Christ

  713. our Lord.

  714. Now the

  715. reality is

  716. if it's a

  717. gift

  718. you can't

  719. earn it.

  720. Just a

  721. gift.

  722. It's not a

  723. payback.

  724. That's something

  725. different.

  726. It's just

  727. a gift.

  728. Romans goes

  729. on to tell

  730. us that

  731. God shows

  732. his love

  733. for us

  734. that while

  735. we were yet

  736. sinners Christ

  737. died for us.

  738. Listen I

  739. don't want to

  740. know everything

  741. you've done.

  742. I'm not going

  743. to tell you

  744. everything I've

  745. done.

  746. Okay.

  747. I mean look

  748. if our sins

  749. in life

  750. were like

  751. stones

  752. and the

  753. little sins

  754. and by the

  755. way we judge

  756. how big the

  757. sins are not

  758. God because

  759. they all

  760. separate us

  761. from God.

  762. Okay.

  763. But we have

  764. a way of

  765. saying what

  766. sins big

  767. and what

  768. sins not.

  769. If I

  770. asked you

  771. to list

  772. what's a

  773. big sin

  774. and what's

  775. a small

  776. sin we

  777. could all

  778. know what

  779. that was.

  780. We understand

  781. that culturally

  782. what that

  783. means.

  784. But even

  785. the little

  786. bitty ones

  787. sent Christ

  788. to the

  789. cross.

  790. You

  791. understand

  792. that don't

  793. you?

  794. So there's

  795. not really

  796. a difference.

  797. It all

  798. separates us

  799. from God.

  800. But let's

  801. just say that

  802. the little

  803. ones are

  804. little stones

  805. and that

  806. the big

  807. ones are

  808. big boulders

  809. and we

  810. all have

  811. a bag.

  812. I'm going

  813. to tell you

  814. if you're

  815. half my age

  816. your bag's

  817. too big

  818. to fit in

  819. this room.

  820. We're in a

  821. mess.

  822. And nobody

  823. wants to

  824. know all

  825. that about

  826. you.

  827. But God

  828. does know

  829. it all.

  830. He knows

  831. the thoughts.

  832. He knows

  833. the things

  834. that you

  835. wanted to

  836. say.

  837. He knows

  838. the things

  839. you said.

  840. He knows

  841. the things

  842. that you

  843. wanted to

  844. do.

  845. He knows

  846. the things

  847. you did.

  848. He knows

  849. the places

  850. you wanted

  851. to go.

  852. He knows

  853. the places

  854. that you

  855. went.

  856. And He

  857. knew all

  858. of that.

  859. And He

  860. shows His

  861. love for

  862. us.

  863. That even

  864. though He

  865. knows all

  866. of that,

  867. He died

  868. for you.

  869. He died

  870. in your

  871. place.

  872. So you

  873. would have

  874. hope.

  875. And not

  876. spend eternity

  877. apart from

  878. God.

  879. And the

  880. last part

  881. of that

  882. second half

  883. of the

  884. gospel truth

  885. is that

  886. if you

  887. confess

  888. with your

  889. mouth

  890. that Jesus

  891. is Lord

  892. and believe

  893. in your

  894. heart that

  895. God raised

  896. Him from

  897. the dead,

  898. you will

  899. be saved.

  900. Now let

  901. me explain

  902. what that

  903. means.

  904. Confess

  905. is not

  906. just meeting

  907. with the

  908. preacher in

  909. his office

  910. and confessing

  911. that I've

  912. sinned before.

  913. confession is

  914. not just

  915. telling somebody

  916. else that

  917. you know,

  918. I believe

  919. in Jesus.

  920. I mean,

  921. I'm not

  922. going to

  923. live it out,

  924. I'm not

  925. going to make

  926. a big deal

  927. out of it

  928. and that

  929. kind of

  930. stuff.

  931. But I

  932. mean,

  933. I believe,

  934. I believe.

  935. I'll tell

  936. you what I

  937. believe Paul's

  938. talking about

  939. because the

  940. context of

  941. when he

  942. says Jesus

  943. is Lord.

  944. Lord.

  945. There was

  946. a ceremony

  947. in the

  948. Roman Empire

  949. where people

  950. would pledge

  951. their allegiance

  952. to the

  953. empire.

  954. They would

  955. burn incense,

  956. they would

  957. kneel before

  958. some icon

  959. of Caesar

  960. and they

  961. would say,

  962. Caesar is

  963. Lord.

  964. And when

  965. they proclaimed

  966. their allegiance

  967. to the empire,

  968. they continued

  969. to keep their

  970. rights and

  971. would continue

  972. to live and

  973. Rome was proud

  974. of their rights.

  975. They were proud

  976. of their citizenship

  977. and they were

  978. able to keep

  979. that.

  980. But when

  981. Christians were

  982. put on the

  983. spot and they

  984. burned that

  985. incense and got

  986. to that point,

  987. they would say,

  988. Kyrios Christos,

  989. which is Greek

  990. for Christ is

  991. Lord.

  992. And when they

  993. stood in that

  994. crucible and

  995. said that,

  996. they would lose

  997. their citizenship.

  998. They would be

  999. imprisoned.

  1000. They would be

  1001. exiled like John

  1002. was when he wrote

  1003. the Revelation.

  1004. Nero would

  1005. take the bodies

  1006. of professed

  1007. Christians,

  1008. impale them,

  1009. dip them in

  1010. tar, and

  1011. light his

  1012. garden with

  1013. them.

  1014. The

  1015. confession of

  1016. Christ is not

  1017. a quiet,

  1018. private,

  1019. just between

  1020. you and me

  1021. matter.

  1022. It's an

  1023. open confession.

  1024. It's living

  1025. out our life

  1026. for the Lord

  1027. Jesus Christ.

  1028. And belief

  1029. is not just a

  1030. belief in a

  1031. historic Jesus

  1032. that did good

  1033. things and died

  1034. and rose again.

  1035. It is instead

  1036. a commitment

  1037. to live your

  1038. life for his

  1039. cause and for

  1040. his kingdom.

  1041. I don't know

  1042. about you,

  1043. but because he's

  1044. changed my life,

  1045. that's music to

  1046. my ears.

  1047. but some

  1048. don't like to

  1049. dance to

  1050. that tune.

  1051. So may I

  1052. ask,

  1053. to the ways

  1054. and the will

  1055. of God for

  1056. your life

  1057. today,

  1058. are you

  1059. childish?

  1060. Or are you

  1061. childlike?

  1062. are you

  1063. stubborn?

  1064. Are you

  1065. humble?

  1066. Are you

  1067. rejecting

  1068. what God's

  1069. telling you?

  1070. Are you

  1071. receiving it?

  1072. Are you

  1073. withdrawing in

  1074. your faith?

  1075. It's just

  1076. between me and

  1077. God.

  1078. Are you

  1079. outreaching?

  1080. Being a

  1081. light of the

  1082. world?

  1083. Being a

  1084. salt that

  1085. flavors the

  1086. society in

  1087. which God

  1088. has placed

  1089. us in.

  1090. And believe

  1091. me,

  1092. he knew

  1093. the status

  1094. and the

  1095. circumstances

  1096. of the

  1097. society that

  1098. he placed

  1099. us in

  1100. before we

  1101. ever got

  1102. here,

  1103. and yet

  1104. caused us

  1105. to be

  1106. salt and

  1107. light in

  1108. the midst

  1109. of it.

  1110. Jesus

  1111. wants us

  1112. to become

  1113. like children,

  1114. not act

  1115. like children,

  1116. but instead

  1117. to be

  1118. dependent,

  1119. to be

  1120. yielding,

  1121. and to

  1122. be open

  1123. to whatever

  1124. he wants

  1125. us to

  1126. do.

  1127. I've

  1128. always lived

  1129. away from

  1130. family.

  1131. Always have.

  1132. I've always

  1133. had family

  1134. that lived

  1135. a long

  1136. way away.

  1137. My daddy

  1138. was in the

  1139. Air Force

  1140. and he

  1141. retired in

  1142. the upper

  1143. peninsula of

  1144. Michigan.

  1145. You can't

  1146. get in Ohio

  1147. and the

  1148. United States

  1149. before you

  1150. hit Canada.

  1151. When he

  1152. retired, we

  1153. moved to

  1154. Greenville.

  1155. New Orleans

  1156. and

  1157. my grandmother

  1158. lived in

  1159. Grand Rapids,

  1160. Michigan.

  1161. And so on

  1162. occasion,

  1163. vacations were

  1164. commonly to

  1165. go up there

  1166. and see her.

  1167. When we

  1168. lived in the

  1169. UP, if we

  1170. had a

  1171. vacation, it

  1172. was to

  1173. come to

  1174. South Carolina

  1175. and see my

  1176. other

  1177. grandmother.

  1178. We moved

  1179. to South

  1180. Carolina.

  1181. I grew

  1182. up.

  1183. God called

  1184. me to go

  1185. to New

  1186. Orleans

  1187. Seminary.

  1188. I married

  1189. a Mississippi

  1190. girl.

  1191. Okay?

  1192. Pastored

  1193. in Mississippi,

  1194. traveled to

  1195. South Carolina.

  1196. to see my

  1197. family.

  1198. Moved to

  1199. South Carolina.

  1200. Traveled to

  1201. Mississippi to

  1202. see family.

  1203. Lived in

  1204. Mississippi.

  1205. Traveled to

  1206. South Carolina

  1207. to see family.

  1208. Now, hey, I

  1209. left a daughter

  1210. in Mississippi,

  1211. so I think I'll

  1212. probably be

  1213. traveling to

  1214. Mississippi.

  1215. But when I

  1216. was a child,

  1217. I never

  1218. questioned,

  1219. where are

  1220. we were

  1221. going?

  1222. I mean, I

  1223. might have

  1224. asked them,

  1225. but it

  1226. didn't really

  1227. matter.

  1228. I didn't

  1229. really have

  1230. a choice.

  1231. When that

  1232. 68 or that

  1233. 76 Buick was

  1234. full, it's

  1235. time to get

  1236. in the back.

  1237. No seat

  1238. belt, back

  1239. window down.

  1240. I threw a

  1241. G.I.

  1242. Joe out the

  1243. back window.

  1244. Greatest sin I

  1245. ever committed

  1246. as a child was

  1247. throwing a G.I.

  1248. Joe out the

  1249. back window.

  1250. But we got

  1251. him back, and

  1252. he was a war

  1253. veteran after

  1254. that, you

  1255. know?

  1256. So, I

  1257. just got in

  1258. the car and

  1259. went where my

  1260. parents were

  1261. going.

  1262. It's time for

  1263. Christians to

  1264. just get in a

  1265. place.

  1266. Quit

  1267. questioning

  1268. everything that

  1269. God stirs in

  1270. our hearts to

  1271. do.

  1272. Just go.

  1273. Hey, I

  1274. don't know

  1275. where we're

  1276. going in this

  1277. life.

  1278. I know where

  1279. I'm going when

  1280. I leave this

  1281. life.

  1282. I don't know

  1283. what God's got

  1284. in store for

  1285. us tomorrow,

  1286. but I know

  1287. I'm biting

  1288. at the bit to

  1289. be exactly where

  1290. he wants me to

  1291. be today and

  1292. tomorrow.

  1293. Let's just go

  1294. with God.

  1295. Let's quit

  1296. trying to figure

  1297. it out and

  1298. go with God.

  1299. With every

  1300. head bowed and

  1301. every eye

  1302. closed.

  1303. Maybe you're

  1304. here today and

  1305. the reality is

  1306. your sin has

  1307. separated you

  1308. from God and

  1309. you've never

  1310. surrendered your

  1311. life to follow

  1312. the Lord Jesus

  1313. Christ.

  1314. You never ask

  1315. him to come into

  1316. your life and to

  1317. change you.

  1318. There is no

  1319. personal commitment

  1320. to Christ.

  1321. You don't have a

  1322. relationship with

  1323. Christ.

  1324. You may have a

  1325. relationship with

  1326. the church.

  1327. You may have a

  1328. relationship with

  1329. good godly people,

  1330. but there's never

  1331. been a time in

  1332. your life when

  1333. you've committed

  1334. your life to

  1335. follow Christ.

  1336. I want you to

  1337. know that this

  1338. time, we'll stand

  1339. in just a moment

  1340. and we'll sing,

  1341. and this time is

  1342. created for you to

  1343. have that opportunity

  1344. to respond to

  1345. Christ.

  1346. It's not the only

  1347. time you can

  1348. respond, but what a

  1349. great time it is.

  1350. The spirit of God

  1351. is leading you to

  1352. do that.

  1353. I encourage you to

  1354. be obedient and

  1355. follow his lead.

  1356. Maybe you're here

  1357. and you are a

  1358. Christian, but the

  1359. reality is you know

  1360. that God is drawing

1361. you to be a part of

  1362. this congregation.

  1363. We've been blessed

  1364. in recent days.

  1365. Many have come

  1366. along the way

  1367. because they've

  1368. told me, I

  1369. believe God is

  1370. calling us to

  1371. join in the

  1372. journey with this

  1373. body of believers

  1374. and to follow his

  1375. will.

  1376. If God's leading

  1377. you to do that,

  1378. you come.

  1379. We'll help you

  1380. in that process.

  1381. Maybe you're here

  1382. and you have made

  1383. a private decision

  1384. for the Lord, but

  1385. you've never made

  1386. that public.

  1387. Jesus, by example

  1388. and by teaching,

  1389. shared with us

  1390. that we make

  1391. that public

  1392. first by baptism.

  1393. We'll be baptizing

  1394. in a couple of

  1395. weeks.

  1396. If you're here

  1397. today and have

  1398. accepted the Lord

  1399. before but never

  1400. been baptized

  1401. since that time,

  1402. I encourage you

  1403. to come.

  1404. Take advantage

  1405. of that opportunity.

  1406. Or maybe you're

  1407. here and you are

  1408. a Christian and you

  1409. know that, but you

  1410. know there's some

  1411. childish things in

  1412. your life.

  1413. Sometimes you buck

  1414. in the back seat.

  1415. You're not happy

  1416. with exactly what's

  1417. going on.

  1418. And you don't

  1419. exactly do what

  1420. God wants you to

  1421. do.

  1422. Will today, will you

  1423. surrender that to

  1424. God?

  1425. Lord, I don't know

  1426. what I'm to do and I

  1427. don't know where we're

1428. going, but I want to

1429. get in on what you

1430. want to do and I want

  1431. to follow your lead

  1432. today.

1433. You can do that at

  1434. these steps and make

  1435. it a makeshift altar.

1436. You can do it where

  1437. you are.

1438. I'll never ask you to

  1439. do anything more or

  1440. anything less than what

1441. God would have you to

  1442. do, but please don't

  1443. satisfy yourself with

  1444. less because you'll

  1445. never be satisfied.

1446. Just obey God as he

  1447. speaks to your heart

  1448. and life.

  1449. Lord Jesus, I love

  1450. you.

1451. I thank you for the

  1452. opportunity that you

  1453. give us through Christ

  1454. and I pray that you'll

1455. help us to respond in

  1456. obedience today as you

1457. speak to our heart and

  1458. life.

  1459. In Jesus' precious name,

  1460. amen.

  1461. Amen.
