  1. Luke chapter 7, a meal together is always, or can, no it's not always, that's a wrong

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  2. statement.

  3. A meal together can be a wonderful time.

  4. It can be miserable too, but there are several different reasons why somebody will invite

  5. you to lunch or to invite you to dinner.

  6. Have you ever been in a situation where somebody invited you to lunch or invited you to dinner

  7. and you really didn't know why you were going?

  8. You didn't know the real reason why you got invited?

  9. I want to warn you that it's not always what it appears and you can lose your appetite

  10. over wondering why you were invited to start with.

  11. Sometimes people invite you for a ketchup meal, you know, just want to catch up.

  12. We haven't seen each other in a while.

  13. I had a buddy of mine that I grew up with that invited me on what I thought was a ketchup

  14. meal a few years back and I found out he was selling something.

  15. Somebody's always got something in the trunk, you know, but anyway, he was selling something.

  16. He was trying to convince me to buy food in bulk to the point that if I bought enough,

  17. they'd give me a freezer.

  18. I thought, I don't think I need that much food today.

  19. Let's just eat lunch, okay?

  20. That's a little bit different than the old meat truck that I debated about driving in

  21. college to get by one summer and making the rounds door to door.

  22. Some people just want to catch up and some people want to win you over and that's exactly why

  23. he invited me because he wanted to win me over and make a little money off of me and that's

  24. what he was doing.

  25. Other times people want to invite you over just to find out some information.

  26. You know, you eat whatever's on the dish and then you get down to the real dish afterwards.

  27. Tell me more.

  28. I want to know.

  29. And then sometimes it could be a dressing down.

  30. They want you on their own turf to tell you their problem with what you're doing.

  31. So Jesus was invited to eat dinner with Simon.

  32. Now, don't get you Simons mixed up.

  33. This is not Simon Peter.

  34. This is instead a Pharisee named Simon.

  35. And I don't think he caught Jesus by surprise.

  36. Well, I'll be honest with you.

  37. I know he didn't.

  38. But whatever his motive was, he appears that he invited Jesus out of curiosity.

  39. Jesus was making an impact.

  40. Rumors were spreading.

  41. People were excited and other people didn't like it and the message had got out.

  42. And at this point, the message was that whoever Jesus is, he is a powerful man.

  43. He is changing people's life.

  44. There's something supernatural about him.

  45. And they couldn't really define what all that meant, but there was something supernatural about that.

  46. And as a Pharisee, as one of those chief priests and elders, as the religious aristocracy,

  47. he's looking at this and seeing what's happening.

  48. Now, is God speaking to him in his heart?

  49. Maybe.

  50. But the reality is, what he led Jesus there for was to try to get him somewhat in a trap.

  51. But in the midst of this dinner, something else happened.

  52. Now, I want you to understand the context.

  53. When a treasured guest comes to visit a nice house of another, in this culture, it was quite a greeting.

  54. I mean, whereas we answer the door with a handshake or a fist bump or whatever,

  55. they opened the door and greeted guests with a kiss.

  56. I'd wake you up.

  57. Somebody invited you over to dinner, wouldn't it?

  58. They didn't take their coat.

  59. They had a servant wash their bare feet or wash their sandaled feet.

  60. And then another may, in really nice places, may anoint their head with oil to refresh you, to bless you.

  61. You can tell a nice restaurant.

  62. When you go to the restroom, I always check the restroom if you want to know if the restaurant is really nice.

  63. Just a little secret.

  64. But when you go in the restroom, if they have mouthwash or cologne, men, I don't know what the ladies have,

  65. but men, if they have that on the counter, you're paying way too much for supper.

  66. I can tell you that.

  67. And the difference in who rich folk are and us are normal folk,

  68. if people take you to a good restaurant and they get an appetizer and dessert, that's rich folk, you know.

  69. If you get both, sometimes you splurge and get one or the other, but that's rich folk.

  70. But the anointing of the head with oil was kind of like that mouthwash in the bathroom.

  71. It was kind of like that cologne, but it was, of course, a lot more personal.

  72. Apparently, none of that happened when Jesus entered this house.

  73. But folks knew he was there.

  74. It was not odd in that day for those who would not be invited to such a dinner as this to come by.

  75. Houses had openings for windows.

  76. And it was not odd for people who would be passing by and hear of big folk eating together

  77. to just see what it was like and to stick their head in the window

  78. and to watch what was going on as the meal.

  79. It would be odd in our culture, but in reality, in that day,

  80. sometimes they'd even come in and sit along the walls and just listen and watch.

  81. That may have been the case here regardless.

  82. For whatever reason, a woman with a reputation of disrepute came on the scene

  83. and our passage talks about what she did.

  84. Talks about the host's reaction to what she did

  85. and the parable that Jesus shared to share truth with them.

  86. It's found in Luke chapter 7, beginning in verse 36, and it says this.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  87. One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him.

  88. And he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at table,

  89. and behold, a woman of the city who was a sinner.

  90. When she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house,

  91. brought an alabaster flask of ointment,

  92. and standing behind him at his feet weeping,

  93. she began to wet his feet with her tears

  94. and wiped them with the hair of her head

  95. and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.

  96. Now, if you don't understand the seating arrangement here,

  97. they had very low tables and pillows around those tables,

  98. and they ate like your mother told you not to.

  99. They would eat laying on one elbow and one hand

  100. and bring it to their mouth very close to the plate,

  101. and their legs lay behind them.

  102. If somebody was next to them, they would be kneeling down beside them.

  103. That's why when Jesus talks about a man being in Abraham's bosom,

  104. that's what it's talking about.

  105. He's laying his head right here.

  106. They're eating together.

  107. They're in the same presence.

  108. So Jesus' feet is back behind him,

  109. and this lady comes in and anoints his feet.

  110. Now, when the Pharisee, in verse 39,

  111. who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,

  112. is this man were a prophet?

  113. If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman

  114. this is who is touching him, for she's a sinner.

  115. So at this point, he feels like he's got Jesus in a pinch, you know?

  116. Either he has received the attention of a lady with a bad reputation,

  117. therefore impure himself, because he would entertain such,

  118. or either he didn't even know what kind of woman that was,

  119. so he was not, therefore, a prophet.

  120. He had him.

  121. The whole meal had paid off.

  122. It was worth it, you know?

  123. His curiosity was solved.

  124. But wait.

  125. Jesus is on the scene.

  126. It says in verse 40,

  127. And Jesus answered,

  128. saying to him,

  129. Simon, I have something to say to you.

  130. And he answered,

  131. Say it, teacher.

  132. He said,

  133. A certain moneylender had two debtors.

  134. One owed 500 denarii, and the other 50.

  135. When they could not pay, he canceled the debt of both.

  136. Now, which of them will love him more?

  137. Now, what he's saying is, on a common laborer's wage,

  138. what he's saying is that one man is getting two years of his salary of debt forgiven,

  139. and the other is getting about two months of debt of what he makes in two months forgiven.

  140. Who do you think is more appreciative?

  141. And Simon answered,

  142. The one, I suppose, from whom he canceled the larger debt.

  143. And Jesus said,

  144. You have judged rightly.

  145. And then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon,

  146. Do you see this woman?

  147. I entered your house.

  148. You gave me no water for my feet,

  149. but she has wet my feet with her tears,

  150. and wiped them with her hair.

  151. Which means she brought down her hair in public,

  152. which is inappropriate,

  153. and wiped his feet,

  154. thought to be because of where they walked and who they walked behind,

  155. the next man's donkey,

  156. the most disgusting part of the body.

  157. You gave me no kiss,

  158. but from the time I came in,

  159. she has not ceased to kiss my feet.

  160. You didn't anoint my head with oil,

  161. but she's anointed my feet with ointment.

  162. Therefore, I tell you,

  163. her sins, which are many,

  164. I did know,

  165. her sins, which are many,

  166. are forgiven,

  167. for she loved much.

  168. But he who is forgiven little,

  169. loves little.

  170. And he said to her,

  171. Your sins are forgiven.

  172. Then those who were at the table with him

  173. began to say among themselves,

  174. Who is this?

  175. Who even forgives sins,

  176. and he said to the woman,

  177. Your faith has saved you.

  178. Go in peace.

  179. In the story that I want to focus on

  180. for the next few moments,

  181. Jesus compared the state of one's soul

  182. and their sin to a debt.

  183. So let's just stay with that story, okay?

  184. As he compares that,

  185. let's unpack that,

  186. and then find out how

  187. to get out from under it.

  188. Now,

  189. as I prepared this,

  190. I couldn't help but think of the irony

  191. that I would be preaching a sermon to you

  192. on how to get out of debt

  193. when I just signed a contract

  194. for a house in Picken, South Carolina,

  195. the land of inflated housing.

  196. But praise the Lord,

  197. I signed a contract.

  198. So,

  199. we're getting there.

  200. But this morning,

  201. I speak of a different kind of debt.

  202. First,

  203. acknowledge your debt.

  204. Because if our sin is a debt,

  205. we're all in debt.

  206. Having debt does not bother everybody.

  207. Some don't mind debt.

  208. It don't bother them.

  209. Now,

  210. I realize that people's got more than I do,

  211. need some debt for tax purposes and all that.

  212. I'm not talking about that stuff.

  213. I'm talking about people who

  214. dread seeing the bill come in the mail.

  215. Some people really don't care, I think.

  216. It's been said that nobody spends money

  217. quite so readily

  218. as those who are hopelessly

  219. and comfortably in debt.

  220. Some folks today,

  221. and this is an idea that's growing way too fast,

  222. believe society owes them something.

  223. And it don't matter how much you owe.

  224. And that same mentality carries over

  225. into what they think of God,

  226. that somehow God owes them something.

  227. So,

  228. in order for him to forgive a debt,

  229. that's no big deal.

  230. It isn't really a priority anyway.

  231. I wasn't worried about it anyway.

  232. And that's like this Pharisee.

  233. The Pharisee didn't think that he had any sin debt,

  234. or at least he didn't have much.

  235. I mean, this is not only a churchgoer.

  236. This is a church leader.

  237. It's so easy to point out outward sins.

  238. He didn't have many of those.

  239. Because if he had,

  240. he wouldn't have been a church leader anymore.

  241. So he didn't have those outward sins.

  242. It's a whole lot easier to point at somebody else's sin.

  243. To realize our own sin debt is not easy.

  244. However, Scripture tells us

  245. that if we don't acknowledge our sin debt,

  246. we will never be forgiven of it.

  247. 1 John 1 verse 8 says,

    1 John 1:8

  248. if we say that we have no sin,

  249. we deceive ourselves,

  250. and the truth is not in us.

  251. John says in verse 10,

  252. if we say we have not sinned,

  253. we make him, being God, a liar,

  254. and his word is not in us.

  255. So if you're a Christian,

  256. and you don't acknowledge

  257. that you have an ongoing sin debt,

  258. because this is not only speaking

  259. to those who have not received Christ,

  260. of course we must ask God

  261. to forgive us of our sins,

  262. acknowledge our sins,

  263. confess our sins before him to be saved.

  264. But once we're saved,

  265. if we as Christians don't acknowledge

  266. the ongoing sin debt in our life,

  267. it is dulling the blade of our effectiveness.

  268. Hebrews 12, 1,

  269. after that wonderful chapter

  270. of that hall of fame of faith

  271. of all those folks

  272. that lived so strong for the Lord

  273. and trusted him in difficult circumstances,

  274. after that in Hebrews 12, 1,

  275. it talks about how the sin

  276. that so easily encumbers us

  277. and entangles us

  278. as one entangled

  279. in a race

  280. where they're trying to

  281. get out of a hurdle or something.

  282. By the way,

  283. if you missed Cindy McLaughlin

  284. this weekend,

  285. you need to look it up.

  286. She ran the 400 meters

  287. in whatever games those are.

  288. How many games we got?

  289. You know, I don't know what,

  290. but anyway,

  291. in the world games,

  292. she ran the 400 meter hurdles,

  293. beat the world record by a second,

  294. which may not sound like a lot,

  295. but what's the race?

  296. They said,

  297. if you lined up, folks,

  298. ladies,

  299. in the 400 meter race

  300. without the hurdles,

  301. she'd come in seventh in the world

  302. without the hurdles,

  303. but she had the hurdles.

  304. It was amazing,

  305. and I'll tell you why she did it,

  306. because nothing encumbered that lady.

  307. She was not entangled in any way.

  308. She just whooped them.

  309. Y'all know what that means?

  310. She just whooped them.

  311. She let nothing come in the way,

  312. and don't you ever think

  313. that you can run

  314. your Christian life

  315. free of hindrances

  316. and have sin in your life,

  317. because when sin is present

  318. and not acknowledged,

  319. you are limiting

  320. how God will use you.

  321. I know he can do all things

  322. that he wants to do.

  323. I'm telling you,

  324. if you have sin in your life,

  325. you'll hinder what God

  326. will do in you

  327. if you don't acknowledge it,

  328. and that makes a difference in you,

  329. but that also makes

  330. an eternal difference

  331. in the lives of those

  332. that you ought to be influencing

  333. and that you ought to be reaching,

  334. because if your sin hinders you

  335. from being everything

  336. that you need to be for God

  337. and hinders your conversation with God

  338. and hinders the conviction

  339. in your heart

  340. that you need from the Lord

  341. in your life,

  342. if you've got sin

  343. that you are harboring

  344. and holding on to

  345. and getting in the way,

  346. you're not as sensitive

  347. to how the Spirit leads.

  348. You're not making the impact

  349. of influencing

  350. and reaching the world

  351. that Christ has called us to,

  352. and eternity is hanging

  353. in the balance for some folks,

  354. and God has called us

  355. to be light,

  356. and in order for us to do that,

  357. we have to realize

  358. the debt in our own life

  359. and get it taken care of.

  360. I want you to notice something.

  361. I want you to notice the question

  362. that Jesus asked in verse 44,

  363. because you can easily pass by it.

  364. He said,

  365. do you see this woman?

  366. Because Simon didn't really see her.

  367. I mean,

  368. she was standing there,

  369. yeah,

  370. but he didn't see her accurately.

  371. I'll tell you what he saw.

  372. He saw a guilty,

  373. loose,

  374. heathen woman,

  375. and that is not what she was,

  376. because what she was

  377. was a broken woman.

  378. Thank God she was a freed woman,

  379. and she was a forgiven woman,

  380. and ironically,

  381. what he saw in himself

  382. was wrong too,

  383. because he saw himself

  384. as righteous and well off,

  385. but because he didn't see

  386. his own debt,

  387. he was still shackled

  388. and indebted.

  389. It could be

  390. that we can't really understand

  391. the state of others

  392. until we understand

  393. the state of ourselves,

  394. and when we understand

  395. the state of our own situation,

  396. we realize

  397. we don't have a lot of time

  398. nor a lot of place

  399. to be pointing fingers

  400. at other people.

  401. We got enough

  402. in our row to hoe

  403. without worrying

  404. about somebody else's,

  405. or as Jesus put it,

  406. the log is too big

  407. in our eyes

  408. to be worried

  409. about the speck

  410. in somebody else's.

  411. I want you to notice

  412. what Jesus seems to point out.

  413. He does not spend,

  414. and I'm talking more

  415. than just this story,

  416. he does not spend

  417. near the time

  418. pointing out

  419. the blatantly wicked

  420. who are obviously

  421. against the things of God.

  422. Instead,

  423. Jesus goes about

  424. and kind of goes after

  425. the pseudo-faithful,

  426. those who like to point out

  427. the sins of others

  428. and ignore their own.

  429. And the reality is

  430. that when you look

  431. at the sins

  432. that Jesus named

  433. and pointed to,

  434. it was often the sins

  435. that are less seen.

  436. That's why he spoke to them,

  437. so the people would see them.

  438. Jesus focused on

  439. the sins of the mind.

  440. Jesus focused on

  441. the sins of the heart.

  442. That's what he spent

  443. his time teaching about.

  444. Those sins of the mind

  445. and the heart

  446. that even most

  447. godly-looking folks

  448. may be dealing with.

  449. I'm sorry.

  450. I didn't do it.

  451. Jesus did it.

  452. He's messing with us.

  453. Folks,

  454. we are all in sin debt.

  455. Second thing

  456. is the debt we owe

  457. is a debt

  458. that we cannot pay.

  459. Just like the debtors

  460. in this story

  461. that could not pay,

  462. we can't pay.

  463. Be clear about something.

  464. We often think

  465. that canceling our debt

  466. and canceling our sin

  467. allows us to escape

  468. without any consequences.

  469. And that is not true

  470. at all.

  471. If you have stolen,

  472. there are consequences

  473. to your theft.

  474. Because one person

  475. is without what they had

  476. and you need to be charged

  477. for it.

  478. The breach has happened.

  479. Even if you pay it back.

  480. You know,

  481. I walk down here

  482. on the floor

  483. and I get a little bit

  484. too close to Kevin

  485. and he gets nervous

  486. and jumps up

  487. and slaps me in the face.

  488. We'll work all that out

  489. after church

  490. and I'll forgive him

  491. and forget it.

  492. But I'm telling you,

  493. I'm going to be more careful

  494. to come back over here

  495. this time, you know.

  496. I'm coming on this side

  497. next time.

  498. Because the reality is,

  499. yeah,

  500. the sin can be forgiven.

  501. And the Lord will forget it

  502. but there's a breach

  503. that's happened.

  504. I mean,

  505. if you murder somebody,

  506. that person is dead.

  507. They're not coming back.

  508. They're dead.

  509. And however sorry you are,

  510. you can't bring them back.

  511. You can be forgiven

  512. but the consequences

  513. of that murder

  514. is that somebody died.

  515. If you lie,

  516. somebody is deceived.

  517. There's a trust

  518. that is broken

  519. and the consequences

  520. remain in that.

  521. Lives are affected

  522. by that.

  523. However,

  524. when we ask God

  525. to cleanse us

  526. and we repent

  527. of our sin,

  528. he removes the sin debt

  529. from us.

  530. We're okay with the Lord

  531. but let's don't get

  532. so comfortable with that

  533. that we miss the fact

  534. that our sin causes

  535. so many hindrances

  536. in our life

  537. that we cannot be casual

  538. even though we know

  539. we serve a good

  540. and faithful

  541. and forgiving God

  542. that will cleanse us

  543. when we repent.

  544. And 1 John

  545. will eat your lunch

  546. about that particular matter.

  547. We may still deal

  548. with the trail

  549. that our actions

  550. or our thoughts

  551. have left behind

  552. but God removes the debt

  553. and our guilt spiritually

  554. but that will not happen.

  555. That cleansing

  556. does not come

  557. when we are merely

  558. watching out

  559. for ourselves.

  560. You see this clearly

  561. with the two thieves

  562. on the cross.

  563. As Jesus hung

  564. on what I believe

  565. was Barabbas' cross

  566. there were two thieves

  567. probably a part

  568. of Barabbas' gang

  569. of thieves

  570. hanging on each side

  571. of the Lord.

  572. And Luke chapter 23

    Luke 23:39

  573. verse 39

  574. says one of the criminals

  575. who were hanging

  576. railed at him

  577. saying are you not

  578. the Christ?

  579. Save yourself

  580. and us.

  581. But the other

  582. rebuked him

  583. saying do you not

  584. fear God

  585. since you are

  586. under the same

  587. sentence of condemnation?

  588. And we indeed

  589. justly for we are

  590. receiving the due

  591. reward of our deeds

  592. for this man

  593. has done nothing wrong.

  594. Now I'm going

  595. to tell you something.

  596. When Jesus

  597. and I know Jesus

  598. had innate knowledge

  599. that we don't have.

  600. One reason

  601. is because he had

  602. a sinless relationship

  603. with the Father

  604. which would make

  605. a huge amount

  606. of difference.

  607. But he's also God

  608. hanging there.

  609. But when a man

  610. is hanging on the

  611. cross dying

  612. and he says

  613. what scripture

  614. just said he says

  615. my soul

  616. something's happened

  617. in that old boy's life.

  618. When he's hanging

  619. on the cross

  620. in agony

  621. and says

  622. we are indeed

  623. just

  624. for we receive

  625. the reward

  626. for our deeds

  627. but this man's

  628. done nothing wrong

  629. and Jesus said

  630. oh and he said

  631. Jesus remember me

  632. when you come

  633. into your kingdom.

  634. And Jesus

  635. goes on to say

  636. today you'll

  637. be with me

  638. in paradise.

  639. My point is

  640. the first man

  641. just wanted down.

  642. He just wanted down.

  643. The second one

  644. wanted to be changed.

  645. And it is the one

  646. that loves God

  647. that's forgiven

  648. and the forgiven

  649. ones are the ones

  650. that love God.

  651. The unforgiven

  652. really do not

  653. love God.

  654. But it's not a matter

  655. that we can solve

  656. ourselves because

  657. we can't pay it back

  658. and we can't

  659. make it go away.

  660. We can't retrace

  661. our steps

  662. that we have

  663. already committed

  664. and changed

  665. what has already

  666. been done.

  667. It is a debt

  668. that we cannot

  669. pay.

  670. Now before I ever

  671. get to my next

  672. point you need

  673. to get the fact

  674. that we're all

  675. in sin debt

  676. and it's a sin debt

  677. that we cannot

  678. pay.

  679. We cannot pay.

  680. But the good

  681. news is

  682. and that's why

  683. I'm here today

  684. is because of

  685. the good news.

  686. You got to

  687. understand the

  688. bad news

  689. to get to

  690. the good news.

  691. And the good

  692. news is

  693. the debt

  694. that we cannot

  695. pay

  696. can be

  697. canceled

  698. today.

  699. Praise God.

  700. Because once

  701. we do acknowledge

  702. our sin debt

  703. before the Lord

  704. it is a relief

  705. to know

  706. that we can

  707. be free

  708. from it.

  709. Because 1 John

  710. 1.8 and 1 John

  711. 1.10

  712. in between those

  713. two is 1 John

  714. 1.9

  715. one of my

  716. favorite passages

  717. and that is

  718. that we confess

  719. our sins

  720. he's faithful

  721. and just

  722. to forgive us

  723. of our sins

  724. and to cleanse

  725. us from

  726. all unrighteousness.

  727. Now confession

  728. means we're

  729. agreeing with God

  730. on what it is.

  731. Not you know

  732. Lord I might have

  733. done something

  734. a little over here

  735. and you know

  736. I mean to

  737. ain't no big

  738. deal but I need

  739. to go ahead.

  740. No no no

  741. it is a big

  742. deal.

  743. Because as I

  744. shared last

  745. week your

  746. little sins

  747. that you think

  748. are little

  749. sins are the

  750. same sins

  751. in your life

  752. and my life

  753. that sent

  754. Christ to the

  755. cross.

  756. So they're

  757. all huge.

  758. Because they

  759. cause a debt

  760. we can't pay.

  761. Confessing is

  762. agreeing with God

  763. on the weight

  764. and the magnitude

  765. of that sin

  766. and if we

  767. I love this

  768. passage because

  769. it says he's

  770. faithful and just.

  771. that means that

  772. if he

  773. he's willing

  774. but unable

  775. if he was

  776. willing but he

  777. wasn't able

  778. he'd be good

  779. hearted but we'd

  780. still be in the

  781. same mess.

  782. And if he was

  783. not willing but

  784. was able

  785. he'd still be

  786. hanging over our

  787. head.

  788. But the

  789. scripture says

  790. that when we

  791. agree with him

  792. on the state of

  793. our debt

  794. that he is

  795. willing and

  796. able to

  797. forgive us

  798. of our sins

  799. and what I

  800. love is the

  801. last part

  802. and cleanse us

  803. from all

  804. unrighteousness

  805. that's because

  806. if I ask you

  807. to write down

  808. your sins

  809. on a sheet

  810. of paper

  811. and you got

  812. honest enough

  813. and weren't

  814. worried about

  815. your neighbor

  816. enough to

  817. actually write

  818. down everything

  819. you could think

  820. of it would

  821. still be

  822. incomplete.

  823. I could give

  824. you a week

  825. to do it.

  826. It would still

  827. be incomplete

  828. because we've

  829. got so good

  830. at sinning that

  831. we can't even

  832. keep up with

  833. all we've

  834. done wrong.

  835. So I love

  836. that last part

  837. because not only

  838. does he forgive

  839. us of our sins

  840. that we confess

  841. to him but he

  842. cleanses us

  843. from all

  844. unrighteousness.

  845. If he could

  846. but would not

  847. or was not

  848. willing we

  849. would be

  850. in a mess

  851. but thank God

  852. he can and

  853. he will

  854. and we can

  855. be clean.

  856. Old hymn

  857. says this

  858. he paid a

  859. debt he did

  860. not owe

  861. I owe a debt

  862. I could not

  863. pay I needed

  864. somebody to wash

  865. my sins away

  866. and now I sing

  867. a brand new

  868. song amazing

  869. grace Christ

  870. Jesus paid a

  871. debt that I

  872. could never

  873. pay.

  874. Our sin debt

  875. is only

  876. canceled through

  877. the shed blood

  878. of Christ.

  879. It is the

  880. cross of Calvary

  881. and our surrender

  882. to his cause

  883. and his kingdom

  884. that brings

  885. that.

  886. So who do you

  887. think has the

  888. greater debt

  889. in this story?

  890. Is it the one

  891. that knew she

  892. was guilty of

  893. great and

  894. grievous sins

  895. or is it

  896. the one

  897. that has

  898. not confessed

  899. the sins

  900. of the heart

  901. and the sins

  902. of the mind?

  903. It may

  904. surprise you

  905. when you see

  906. what Christ

  907. points out

  908. so very

  909. often.

  910. So very

  911. often he

  912. tells us

  913. let's not

  914. be concerned

  915. let's don't

  916. so concern

  917. ourselves

  918. with other

  919. sins

  920. as near as

  921. much as we

  922. do our

  923. own

  924. and let's

  925. not only

  926. concern

  927. ourselves

  928. with other

  929. sins

  930. as near

  931. as much

  932. as we

  933. do

  934. others

  935. souls

  936. because I

  937. want you

  938. to notice

  939. Jesus was

  940. more concerned

  941. about the

  942. unconfessed

  943. sins

  944. of the

  945. Pharisee

  946. than he

  947. was

  948. the

  949. admitting

  950. of her

  951. many sins

  952. as she

  953. laid her

  954. life out

  955. before him

  956. as she

  957. laid her

  958. reputation

  959. out before

  960. him

  961. as she

  962. put it

  963. all on

  964. the line

  965. she could

  966. have been

  967. stoned to

  968. death for

  969. what she

  970. did that

  971. day

  972. she laid

  973. it all

  974. out there

  975. so he's

  976. more concerned

  977. about the

  978. sin of the

  979. fellow who

  980. wouldn't

  981. confess it

  982. but he

  983. was also

  984. a whole lot

  985. more concerned

  986. and get

  987. this now

  988. with the

  989. state of

  990. her soul

  991. than she

  992. was all

  993. the things

  994. she had

  995. done

  996. wrong

  997. only God

  998. can cancel

  999. sin

  1000. death

  1001. and that

  1002. only comes

  1003. through

  1004. Christ

  1005. and so we

  1006. have a job

  1007. to do

  1008. and that

  1009. job is to

  1010. acknowledge the

  1011. sin in our

  1012. own life

  1013. and ask

  1014. God

  1015. agree with

  1016. God on

  1017. it

  1018. and ask

  1019. God to

  1020. remove it

  1021. and repent

  1022. of it

  1023. repent

  1024. means 180

  1025. degree

  1026. I got

  1027. fired up

  1028. one time

  1029. when I was

  1030. young

  1031. preaching

  1032. and said

  1033. that's a

  1034. 360 degree

  1035. turn

  1036. no

  1037. if it's

  1038. 360 degrees

  1039. you keep

  1040. going in the

  1041. same direction

  1042. you're going

  1043. and it ain't

  1044. that

  1045. it's a

  1046. 180

  1047. and second

  1048. job we

  1049. got

  1050. just go

  1051. tell somebody

  1052. that

  1053. go treat

  1054. them like

  1055. Jesus

  1056. would

  1057. care more

  1058. about your

  1059. soul than

  1060. you do

  1061. their sin

  1062. worry

  1063. more about

  1064. your sin

  1065. than you do

  1066. theirs

  1067. and when we

  1068. do that

  1069. we're on

  1070. track

  1071. you want to

  1072. know how to

  1073. get out of

  1074. debt

  1075. acknowledge

  1076. it

  1077. admit it

  1078. acknowledge

  1079. all of

  1080. it

  1081. turn

  1082. from it

  1083. and lay

  1084. it at the

  1085. feet of

  1086. the only

  1087. one that

  1088. can cancel

  1089. it

  1090. because you

  1091. know what

  1092. it's already

  1093. been paid

  1094. he's paid

  1095. for it

  1096. we just have

  1097. to admit it

  1098. and lay it

  1099. down

  1100. with every head

  1101. bowed and

  1102. every eye

  1103. closed

  1104. my burden

  1105. this morning

  1106. is

  1107. that there

  1108. may be

  1109. somebody

  1110. here

  1111. who's

  1112. never

  1113. acknowledged

  1114. that sin

  1115. before God

  1116. confess that

  1117. to him

  1118. and ask him

  1119. to come

  1120. into their

  1121. life

  1122. cleanse them

  1123. change them

  1124. save them

  1125. maybe you

  1126. think you

  1127. have

  1128. maybe other

  1129. people think

  1130. you have

  1131. that

  1132. and it'd

  1133. be

  1134. embarrassing

  1135. for you

  1136. to acknowledge

  1137. such as

  1138. that

  1139. well I

  1140. promise you

  1141. just like

  1142. that lady

  1143. left her

  1144. embarrassment

  1145. to the side

  1146. and dealt

  1147. with what

  1148. she needed

  1149. to do

  1150. in her

  1151. heart

  1152. you need

  1153. to deal

  1154. with what's

  1155. in your

  1156. heart

  1157. and what

  1158. God's

  1159. telling you

  1160. to do

  1161. maybe you're

  1162. here this

  1163. morning

  1164. and

  1165. you know

  1166. there's sin

  1167. in your

  1168. life

  1169. that you

  1170. need to ask

  1171. God to

  1172. forgive you

  1173. for and

  1174. to walk

  1175. away from

  1176. now's

  1177. the time

  1178. don't put

  1179. it off

  1180. you walk

  1181. out of this

  1182. room and

  1183. go on your

  1184. way

  1185. you'll forget

  1186. it

  1187. move on

  1188. now's the

  1189. time

  1190. get serious

  1191. with God

  1192. deal with

  1193. it

  1194. in any way

  1195. he tells

  1196. you to deal

  1197. with it

  1198. if that

  1199. means going

  1200. to somebody

  1201. go to

  1202. them

  1203. if that

  1204. means going

  1205. to the

  1206. altar

  1207. go to

  1208. the

  1209. altar

  1210. if it

  1211. means

  1212. standing

  1213. right

  1214. where you

  1215. are

  1216. and asking

  1217. God to

  1218. forgive you

  1219. and to

  1220. cleanse you

  1221. and to

  1222. make you

  1223. right again

  1224. do it

  1225. right where

  1226. you are

  1227. just do

  1228. what God

  1229. tells you

  1230. to do

  1231. maybe you're

  1232. here and

  1233. you have

  1234. done that

  1235. you know

  1236. that God

  1237. has forgiven

  1238. you

  1239. but there's

  1240. a matter

  1241. in your

  1242. life

  1243. you've

  1244. made a

  1245. personal

  1246. decision

  1247. for God

  1248. but you've

  1249. never made

  1250. it public

  1251. you've

  1252. never done

  1253. that through

  1254. baptism

  1255. and I'm

  1256. telling you

  1257. that's

  1258. not a

  1259. rite of

  1260. passage

  1261. it's a

  1262. hindrance

  1263. it's a

  1264. sinful

  1265. hindrance

  1266. to not

  1267. be

  1268. baptized

  1269. as a

  1270. believer

  1271. because it

  1272. is exactly

  1273. what Christ

  1274. not only

  1275. tells us

  1276. to do

  1277. but he

  1278. shows us

  1279. to do

  1280. so I

  1281. encourage you

  1282. to step

  1283. forward

  1284. and make

  1285. what was

  1286. private

  1287. public

  1288. maybe God's

  1289. leading you

  1290. to be a

  1291. part of

  1292. this church

  1293. you want

  1294. to join

  1295. us

  1296. in the

  1297. journey

  1298. join

  1299. hands

  1300. with us

  1301. invest

  1302. in us

  1303. let us

  1304. invest

  1305. in you

  1306. let us

  1307. grow

  1308. together

  1309. in the

  1310. Lord

  1311. it's

  1312. exciting

  1313. to be

  1314. a part

  1315. of that

  1316. God's

  1317. leading you

  1318. to do

  1319. that

  1320. we'd love

  1321. to guide

  1322. you

  1323. in that

  1324. process

  1325. I have

  1326. no idea

  1327. what God

  1328. is telling

  1329. you

  1330. I know

  1331. what he

  1332. told me

  1333. to say

  1334. but I

  1335. just know

  1336. you'll never

  1337. be satisfied

  1338. until you

  1339. be obedient

  1340. to him

  1341. so just

  1342. do what

  1343. he tells

  1344. you to

  1345. do

  1346. right now

  1347. Lord

  1348. Jesus

  1349. I love

  1350. you

  1351. and thank

  1352. you

  1353. for your

  1354. movement

  1355. of the

  1356. spirit of

  1357. God

  1358. in this

  1359. place

  1360. help us

  1361. to simply

  1362. be obedient

  1363. as you

  1364. speak to

  1365. our hearts

  1366. and lives

  1367. in Jesus

  1368. precious name

  1369. amen

  1370. stand

  1371. together
