  1. Let's turn to Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  2. Luke chapter 13, there's CDs and t-shirts and all that will be for sale there in the Vestibule.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  3. Man, I'm telling you, I'm going to get them a bus because they'll be gone.

  4. That's great.

  5. Thank you so much for leading us in worship.

  6. Why do bad things happen to good people?

  7. I mean, it don't seem right.

  8. It's not fair.

  9. And it's one of those things that we don't understand.

  10. And when you begin to try to deal with why bad things happen to good people,

  11. somebody always says, well, if bad things happen to seemingly good people,

  12. were the people really bad?

  13. I mean, was there something there that would cause something like that to happen to them

  14. that we didn't know about them?

  15. I mean, are they paying for something they did wrong?

  16. That's the kind of questions that people ask, and that's the kind of questions that they ask Jesus.

  17. The beginning of Luke chapter 13 speaks of the Galileans.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  18. Now, let me tell you about the Galileans.

  19. The Galileans were a spirited, high-strung, excited people that sometimes did too much at the wrong time.

  20. To explain myself, Peter was a Galilean.

  21. And when they came to arrest Jesus, he took a dagger or sword and cut off a man's ear.

  22. Now, I will tell you the reason why he cut the man's ear off was because the Roman helmet did not protect the ears.

  23. He wasn't aiming at the ear, folks.

  24. Okay?

  25. He was taking the dude out.

  26. That's what he was doing.

  27. And, of course, Jesus put the ear back on,

  28. and Peter claimed absolute allegiance to Christ without compromise,

  29. and then he folded like a man in the ring with Mike Tyson in his heyday when the pressure got put on.

  30. He was a zealot in every way.

  31. That's the Galilean spirit.

  32. I will tell you if you go to the Holy Land and you go into Galilee,

  33. there's a different flavor about those folks.

  34. I like them, you know.

  35. They got a little spunk to them, like some of y'all do this morning.

  36. And they are excited.

  37. And so Pilate didn't like them, apparently,

  38. because this speaks of a historical circumstance where

  39. Pilate had Roman soldiers interrupt the time of sacrifice of the Galileans

  40. by killing the Galileans and then mixing their blood with the blood sacrifices

  41. that the Galileans had made.

  42. And these people are asking Jesus,

  43. why did that happen to them?

  44. They're grabbing headline news

  45. and saying, why in the world is this happening to these people?

  46. So Jesus

  47. gave them

  48. another thought.

  49. See, the Pharisees

  50. taught and believed that every tragedy

  51. was seen as a divine penalty

  52. for somebody's sin.

  53. That's why they asked him when

  54. someone was sick,

  55. who sinned?

  56. Was it the boy or was it his parents?

  57. I mean, what caused this problem to happen?

  58. They brought up things like that.

  59. And when they asked Jesus about this Galilean circumstance,

  60. Jesus responded and said,

  61. don't concern,

  62. this is my translation of this,

  63. don't concern yourself with

  64. why it happened to them.

  65. There's a lot of bad things happening.

  66. And he gave another instance.

  67. The first incident that they brought up

  68. was deliberate.

  69. The second

  70. seemed to be an accident.

  71. And Jesus is saying,

  72. either way,

  73. you ought to be concerned

  74. not about why things are happening

  75. to different people.

  76. You ought to be concerned

  77. about the state of your heart.

  78. And then Jesus responds

  79. by telling them to be ready.

  80. And he tells them through a story

  81. that we call a parable.

  82. It means a side story.

  83. One of those stories

  84. that come alongside

  85. to help us understand

  86. the truth better.

  87. And it's found in Luke chapter 13,

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  88. beginning in verse 6,

  89. and he says this.

  90. And he told this parable.

  91. A man had a fig tree

  92. planted in his vineyard

  93. and he came seeking fruit on it

  94. and found none.

  95. And he said to the vine dresser,

  96. look, for three years now,

  97. I've come seeking fruit

  98. on this fig tree

  99. and I've found none.

  100. Cut it down.

  101. Why should it use up the ground?

  102. And he answered him

  103. and said,

  104. Sir, let it alone this year also

  105. until I dig around it

  106. and put on manure.

  107. Then if it should bear fruit next year,

  108. well and good.

  109. But if not,

  110. you can cut it down.

  111. Now,

  112. some of y'all will recognize

  113. right off the bat

  114. that we're talking about a fig tree

  115. and you'll begin to talk about

  116. the symbolism in Scripture

  117. and those type things

  118. that the fig tree

  119. does often represent

  120. the nation of Israel.

  121. It does.

  122. We see it in the Old Testament.

  123. It's carried over

  124. into the New Testament.

  125. And it mentions,

  126. it's talking about Israel

  127. many times over.

  128. Not to say it isn't here,

  129. but that nation,

  130. any nation,

  131. is made up of people

  132. and the people

  133. that make up the nation

  134. is who Jesus is speaking to.

  135. He's talking to individuals.

  136. He's talking to those individuals

  137. that were standing there

  138. with Him that day.

  139. And by the inspiration

  140. of the Holy Spirit

  141. and the way that

  142. the Holy Spirit

  143. breathes life into Scripture

  144. and brings it all intact to us

  145. where we are

  146. through the inspiration

  147. of the Holy Spirit,

  148. He's talking to us

  149. as individuals.

  150. If anyone is not fruitful,

  151. they could be cut down.

  152. The story is,

  153. the truth is,

  154. to be clear about it,

  155. judgment is coming.

  156. That's what Jesus says.

  157. Judgment's coming.

  158. But aren't you glad

  159. that He gives us

  160. a little more time?

  161. Now, it may not be

  162. much more time,

  163. but if you don't believe

  164. that God's been patient with us,

  165. well, you're wrong.

  166. Because He has been.

  167. And if you were to sit down

  168. and be honest with each other,

  169. you'd quickly understand

  170. why I believe

  171. that we have a lot

  172. to be thankful for.

  173. But instead of the sit down,

  174. let me just tell you,

  175. I believe that we ought

  176. to be thankful

  177. for the patience of God

  178. because, for instance,

  179. Romans 3.23 states

  180. that we're all sinners.

  181. sinners.

  182. And we all fall short

  183. of the glory of God.

  184. We've all messed up.

  185. And Romans 6.23 tells us

  186. that the cost of that sin

  187. is death.

  188. And when it speaks

  189. of death there,

  190. it's not really talking

  191. about the heart dying,

  192. it's talking instead

  193. about an eternal separation

  194. from God.

  195. The sadness of a believer

  196. passing from this life

  197. into the next,

  198. we're not sad

  199. because they now

  200. have received the reward

  201. and in heaven,

  202. we're sad because

  203. they're not with us anymore.

  204. It's the separation.

  205. And when it speaks

  206. of the death

  207. that comes

  208. to the cost of sin,

  209. it's talking about

  210. the eternal separation

  211. from God.

  212. And to fit the story

  213. that Jesus tells here,

  214. you will be chopped down

  215. and may I add,

  216. be burned.

  217. That's what Jesus says.

  218. And you will see

  219. as we continue

  220. to talk about the stories

  221. that Jesus told,

  222. he didn't just say it

  223. once or twice.

  224. He said it a lot.

  225. Jesus gets to the heart

  226. of the matter

  227. and the sin

  228. of unfruitfulness

  229. is serious to God

  230. because the word

  231. tells us how

  232. to bear fruit.

  233. John 15, 5,

  234. Jesus said,

  235. I am the vine,

  236. you're the branches,

  237. whoever abides in me

  238. and I in him,

  239. he, it is,

  240. that bears much fruit

  241. from apart from me,

  242. you can do nothing.

  243. there ought to be evidence

  244. in your life

  245. that you are in Christ

  246. if you're a Christian.

  247. If there is no evidence,

  248. you're not in Christ.

  249. Scripture's clear about that.

  250. John goes on and on about it

  251. in the gospel of John

  252. as well as in 1 John.

  253. There is no such thing

  254. as a fruitless Christian.

  255. There is such a thing

  256. as a fruitless person

  257. who thinks

  258. that he or she is a Christian.

  259. And that person

  260. in due time,

  261. in the next season,

  262. in the next moment,

  263. whatever the timetable is,

  264. it could be a second,

  265. it could be decades,

  266. will be cut down.

  267. So how do we respond to that?

  268. I think that's,

  269. that's not nice on Sunday morning.

  270. How do we respond to that?

  271. What do we take from this story?

  272. Well,

  273. because I'm a Baptist preacher,

  274. three things, okay?

  275. One is be patient with others.

  276. Be patient with others.

  277. As a man who's leaving

  278. this afternoon

  279. to drive through Atlanta

  280. to get to Mississippi,

  281. this don't apply to me.

  282. Be patient with others.

  283. When I was a college kid,

  284. God called me to ministry.

  285. I went and got

  286. probably the first commentary set

  287. that anybody gets

  288. back in that day.

  289. That was the Matthew Henry

  290. commentary set.

  291. Now they've got a,

  292. a bridged one volume version

  293. now that you can read.

  294. But this was the old font

  295. in the six volumes.

  296. I like what Matthew Henry says

  297. about the patience of God.

  298. He says that had it not been

  299. for Christ intercession,

  300. the whole world would be cut down.

  301. We owe a lot

  302. to God's mercy.

  303. We owe a lot

  304. to Christ intercession.

  305. I mean, let's be clean,

  306. we owe it all.

  307. We owe our lives.

  308. And we ought to be patient

  309. with each other.

  310. If you go home

  311. and eat a peach

  312. and take that pit outside

  313. and plant it in the ground,

  314. you will not get fruit immediately.

  315. It will take years

  316. to grow

  317. a tree

  318. out of that pit

  319. that will grow,

  320. that will make its own peach.

  321. And

  322. that is if you're successful.

  323. I grew up with a peach tree

  324. in my backyard.

  325. The bugs loved it

  326. a lot more than we did,

  327. apparently.

  328. Got a whole lot quicker.

  329. Young trees

  330. do not grow early.

  331. early.

  332. And if Jesus

  333. is comparing us

  334. to trees,

  335. we need to expect fruit,

  336. but it takes time.

  337. And we need to be patient.

  338. Hear me.

  339. We have children

  340. around here

  341. that need the nurture

  342. of God.

  343. That takes time.

  344. It takes willingness.

  345. It takes patience.

  346. We have new Christians

  347. that may be grown,

  348. but are new Christians.

  349. Maybe they're not grown.

  350. We baptized several children recently.

  351. They've never brought fruit

  352. and it takes time.

  353. We have some

  354. that's supposed to be

  355. seasoned Christians,

  356. but where's the fruit?

  357. God is

  358. patient.

  359. Thank God

  360. He's patient

  361. with them

  362. and He's patient

  363. with us.

  364. And as

  365. everybody likes to say

  366. these days,

  367. we have to pay it forward.

  368. We need to be patient

  369. with others

  370. as well.

  371. So don't rush me

  372. this morning.

  373. Be patient.

  374. The second thing

  375. is this.

  376. Fertilize

  377. the unfruitful.

  378. Where there is

  379. unfruitfulness

  380. around us

  381. or

  382. in us,

  383. we need to

  384. dig around

  385. and throw

  386. some manure

  387. on it

  388. or just

  389. dung it.

  390. Okay?

  391. That's not exactly

  392. what Nike said.

  393. It's a little better.

  394. So let me ask you,

  395. how are you doing

  396. when you walk

  397. with God?

  398. You don't grow

  399. fruit trees

  400. for ornamentation

  401. or at least

  402. God doesn't.

  403. What kind

  404. of priority

  405. is your

  406. walk with God?

  407. Now I will tell you

  408. it's much easier

  409. to point at somebody

  410. else and say,

  411. boy,

  412. I'll tell you

  413. what they need

  414. to be doing

  415. in their life.

  416. Well,

  417. let's get past

  418. that this morning

  419. because we're

  420. being patient

  421. with them.

  422. Let's not be

  423. so patient

  424. with ourselves.

  425. Let's instead

  426. look at

  427. where we are.

  428. What kind

  429. of priority

  430. is your walk

  431. with God?

  432. We're not saved

  433. to look good,

  434. folks.

  435. We're saved

  436. and given

  437. a responsibility

  438. and thank God

  439. in enabling

  440. and empowerment

  441. to bear fruit.

  442. And if we

  443. don't,

  444. God will choose

  445. to use someone

  446. that will bear fruit.

  447. And the only way

  448. you're going to bear fruit,

  449. let me take you

  450. back to 715.5.

  451. The only way

  452. you're going to bear

  453. John,

  454. excuse me,

  455. John 15.5,

  456. the only way

  457. you're going to bear

  458. fruit is

  459. to abide

  460. with the Lord.

  461. And

  462. you need time

  463. with God

  464. in His Word

  465. daily.

  466. We can put out

  467. all the bookmarks

  468. on every offering

  469. box that we got.

  470. We can encourage it

  471. and put it in the

  472. newsletter

  473. and put it before you

  474. all we want.

  475. But if you don't

  476. commit yourself

  477. to spend time

  478. with the Lord

  479. daily,

  480. I'm not talking

  481. about a ritual.

  482. Forget rituals.

  483. I'm talking

  484. about a relationship.

  485. I'm talking

  486. about a quiet

  487. spot

  488. to let God

  489. speak

  490. to your heart.

  491. You need

  492. to talk

  493. to Him.

  494. That's prayer.

  495. You need

  496. Him to talk

  497. to you.

  498. That's His Word.

  499. that's the way

  500. the conversation

  501. happens.

  502. It's when we

  503. allow Him

  504. to speak to us

  505. through the Holy Spirit

  506. of God

  507. through His Word

  508. and we talk

  509. to Him too.

  510. We need

  511. to talk

  512. to others.

  513. That's what

  514. the church

  515. is about.

  516. That's a formula

  517. and it works.

  518. It works.

  519. I will tell

  520. you

  521. that if the

  522. only part

  523. of First Baptist

  524. Church

  525. that you're

  526. a part of

  527. is to walk

  528. in the doors

  529. somewhere between

  530. 1020 and

  531. 1035

  532. and sit down

  533. in here,

  534. I am glad

  535. you're here.

  536. I am.

  537. I prayed

  538. for you

  539. before you

  540. got here.

  541. I'll pray

  542. for you

  543. after I leave

  544. here.

  545. and I'm

  546. glad you're

  547. here.

  548. But I will

  549. tell you

  550. this is not

  551. enough.

  552. It's not

  553. enough.

  554. You won't

  555. know this

  556. church

  557. just from

  558. that.

  559. You won't

  560. build

  561. relationships

  562. with folks

  563. in this

  564. room

  565. just from

  566. that.

  567. And Christ

  568. came to

  569. establish the

  570. church and

  571. it's very

  572. clear in the

  573. book of Acts

  574. how you do

  575. that properly

  576. and that is

  577. to spend

  578. time together.

  579. We have

  580. Sunday school

  581. classes for

  582. that.

  583. We have

  584. Bible

  585. study groups

  586. for that.

  587. We have

  588. prayer groups

  589. for that.

  590. We're

  591. providing as

  592. many avenues

  593. as we

  594. possibly can

  595. and looking

  596. to provide

  597. more for

  598. you to get

  599. engaged and

  600. get connected

  601. to other

  602. folks that

  603. are going

  604. through common

  605. things that

  606. you're going

  607. through and

  608. help us as

  609. iron sharpens

  610. iron so let

  611. one sharpen

  612. another.

  613. To work

  614. each other.

  615. To maybe

  616. prune one

  617. another from

  618. time to

  619. time.

  620. to compliment

  621. the fruit of

  622. another.

  623. To help

  624. one another

  625. along because

  626. we don't want

  627. to look like it

  628. on Sunday

  629. morning at

  630. all.

  631. None of us

  632. do.

  633. Okay?

  634. But we all

  635. need help.

  636. It's not that we

  637. necessarily want

  638. anybody to tell us

  639. what they think.

  640. I don't mean that.

  641. But I'm just

  642. telling you folks,

  643. you need the

  644. camaraderie around

  645. the word of God.

  646. You need that.

  647. And if you

  648. don't have it,

  649. it is more

  650. difficult to

  651. abide with

  652. the Lord.

  653. He established

  654. the church for

  655. those purposes

  656. because he knew

  657. we needed it.

  658. He knows what

  659. you're facing on

  660. Monday morning.

  661. And you probably

  662. know what it is

  663. too, but if you

  664. don't, he's already

  665. there by the way.

  666. He knows what the

  667. circumstances are.

  668. And you need

  669. that kind of

  670. abiding with each

  671. other.

  672. And let me go

  673. ahead and make a

  674. commercial while I'm

  675. here.

  676. You say,

  677. Preacher, I don't

  678. know how to get

  679. engaged in that.

  680. I mean, it's just

  681. intimidating to walk

  682. in the doors and try

  683. to find where to go

  684. and I can't find my

  685. way around the

  686. building.

  687. I understand.

  688. I'm new.

  689. You know, I'm new.

  690. The first time that I

  691. came here, the first

  692. Sunday I was here as

  693. your pastor, okay, on

  694. May the 1st, the first

  695. guy that welcomed me

  696. was not in this

  697. church.

  698. Did not have a home

  699. in Pickens.

  700. He just came in off

  701. the street and said,

  702. Y'all have any

  703. coffee?

  704. I said, that's a

  705. great question.

  706. Man, I hope so.

  707. You know, I don't

  708. know, but man, you're

  709. early.

  710. Do you know the

  711. Lord?

  712. And he said, yeah.

  713. I said, good.

  714. Come back in 30

  715. minutes, okay?

  716. Because you're too

  717. early, you know.

  718. And listen, on

  719. September 11th, I can

  720. tell you where the

  721. coffee's going to be,

  722. all right?

  723. Because the coffee

  724. bar's opening.

  725. Amen?

  726. So anyway, it's

  727. going to be in the

  728. Welcome Center, which

  729. is the middle door

  730. between the sanctuary

  731. and the fellowship

  732. hall.

  733. And everybody

  734. don't know that,

  735. folks.

  736. We need each other.

  737. Christ knew that.

  738. Don't take that joy

  739. away from others,

  740. mingling in and mixing

  741. in your lives and

  742. helping us all to

  743. become stronger.

  744. We need that.

  745. God's established

  746. that.

  747. And without that,

  748. something's missing.

  749. And it shows.

  750. It shows.

  751. Be clear.

  752. Apathy, lack of

  753. production, fruitlessness,

  754. they're all forms of

  755. disobedience.

  756. So fortify your

  757. spiritual life with

  758. prayer.

  759. Fortify your spiritual

  760. life with the Word of

  761. God.

  762. If you don't know how

  763. to do that properly,

  764. come see me on

  765. September the 11th.

  766. Well, you can see me

  767. before then, but

  768. September the 11th

  769. begins that class in

  770. the fellowship hall.

  771. Those are some of the

  772. very things that I'm

  773. going to be talking

  774. about.

  775. It's a great opportunity

  776. for that.

  777. Don't let the evil

  778. one deceive you,

  779. separate you, and

  780. deplete you.

  781. COVID has been

  782. awful.

  783. The losses that

  784. people have suffered

  785. have been tragic.

  786. In the midst of all

  787. of that, I buried

  788. two 42-year-olds that

  789. died with COVID.

  790. I've seen the pain

  791. that went into that

  792. dilemma and that

  793. difficulty.

  794. And I know how tough

  795. it is to preach to an

  796. empty sanctuary in front

  797. of a camera that they'll

  798. watch the next day.

  799. It ain't the same as the

  800. fellowship of believers,

  801. I promise you.

  802. It's different from that.

  803. COVID has been awful.

  804. But I'm telling you, the

  805. worst part of it, not

  806. taking away from any of

  807. the physical pandemic

  808. part of it, but the

  809. worst part of it has been

  810. the spiritual pandemic

  811. that took place.

  812. Because we all withdrew and

  813. we all got to ourself.

  814. And just like so many

  815. people died of other

  816. health concerns because

  817. they couldn't treat them

  818. because everybody was

  819. focused on COVID and so

  820. they didn't take care of

  821. their bad heart and they

  822. didn't take care of the

  823. cancer they were fighting

  824. because they couldn't

  825. get in to see the doctor

  826. because of all those

  827. circumstances and they

  828. suffered with other

  829. matters.

  830. In the same kind of way,

  831. in the midst of that, we

  832. pulled away from

  833. everything, never bothered

  834. to re-engage and come

  835. back and it's been a

  836. spiritual pandemic upon

  837. the church of Jesus

  838. Christ.

  839. And it's time to

  840. relaunch and change that,

  841. folks.

  842. It's time to get engaged.

  843. It's time to grow in the

  844. Lord and allow God to do

  845. that.

  846. And if I'm digging a bit,

  847. that is exactly what

  848. Jesus was doing and

  849. that's exactly what he

  850. said we need to do.

  851. Dig around the roots.

  852. Dig around the roots.

  853. Throw some manure on.

  854. Just dung it.

  855. Remain faithful to the

  856. people of God.

  857. Let God work in us and

  858. through us.

  859. But it's not just about

  860. us.

  861. A lack of unfruitfulness,

  862. excuse me, a lot of

  863. unfruitfulness is caused

  864. by people not being

  865. believers.

  866. believers.

  867. People need the Lord.

  868. They need him today.

  869. There's people in this

  870. room.

  871. I don't know who you

  872. are, but there's people

  873. in this room who've never

  874. given his or her heart to

  875. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  876. Everybody may think you

  877. have.

  878. You may have thought that

  879. aligning with the church

  880. and going along for some

  881. time is enough.

  882. But the reality is, and I

  883. shared this midweek this

  884. past week, the greatest

  885. burden I have as a pastor,

  886. whether it's wrong or

  887. right, the greatest burden

  888. I have as a pastor is the

  889. people that I preach to

  890. each week and look at and

  891. wonder, God, do they know

  892. you?

  893. Has their life been changed

  894. by you?

  895. Has there been a difference

  896. in them, oh God?

  897. Please don't let them walk

  898. out of here knowing the

  899. gospel, knowing what it

  900. means to surrender your life

  901. to the Lord, and then walk

  902. out of here unchanged, not

  903. committed.

  904. When the ax hits the root,

  905. it will forever be too

  906. late.

  907. And God has placed people in

  908. our lives to help us change,

  909. and God has placed us in

  910. other people's lives to share

  911. our faith with them.

  912. God has given us neighbors,

  913. the neighbors you don't like,

  914. the neighbors you wish would

  915. go away with all the moving

  916. going on, let them move,

  917. Lord, let them move.

  918. God's put them there.

  919. And all their junk in the

  920. yard, he's put them there.

  921. God's given you your work

  922. mates, the ones that you

  923. avoid.

  924. God put them there.

  925. God give you your fellow team

  926. players.

  927. God give you your team moms and

  928. your team dads to share your

  929. faith with, to make an example

  930. of, to show.

  931. Dig around a little bit.

  932. Poke at it.

  933. Throw some manure on it.

  934. Just dung it.

  935. You are not responsible for

  936. their response to you.

  937. You're responsible for giving

  938. them an opportunity to

  939. personally hear an invitation to

  940. come to Christ and don't let your

  941. true friendship with them come in

  942. the way of giving them an

  943. opportunity at eternal life.

  944. Fertilize the unfruitful.

  945. And lastly, prepare for the coming

  946. day.

  947. If there's not fruitfulness after the

  948. effort, the tree is, the tree is

  949. axed down and replaced and there's a

  950. day coming.

  951. Thank God it's not too late.

  952. I don't know when it will be too

  953. late.

  954. I'm not selling any books on it.

  955. Okay.

  956. I'm just telling you, Jesus was

  957. clear.

  958. It will be.

  959. And those who refuse to come to the

  960. Lord, God is patient.

  961. Thank God for that.

  962. But time's running out.

  963. And those who waste that time and

  964. fail to faithfully serve the Lord,

  965. time runs out.

  966. Now I understand what people are

  967. waiting on.

  968. I get it.

  969. I get it.

  970. But I want you to watch what

  971. happens.

  972. When you're young, you don't have

  973. your own family.

  974. You think, well, I'll wait until I

  975. get a family.

  976. When I get a family, I'll get fully

  977. engaged and faithful.

  978. And then you get a family.

  979. And then having kids is always make

  980. or break, one or the other.

  981. It's either too much trouble to go or

  982. you're going because you want the

  983. kids there.

  984. That's what happens.

  985. The decision that comes with that.

  986. But when you get a family, you kind of

  987. wait until the kids are older.

  988. And then the kids get older and life

  989. gets busier.

  990. And you've got to make decisions,

  991. tough decisions about how you're going

  992. to prioritize your life because they

  993. just want the most of it.

  994. And our life kind of revolves around

  995. that.

  996. And then the kids are gone and it's

  997. time for a break.

  998. And then the grandkids come and you

  999. want time with them instead.

1000. And then you get older and then you

1001. think, well, it's not my time.

  1002. It's somebody else's time now.

  1003. Now, 80 years later, there's a life

1004. that proclaimed to have a relationship

1005. with God, but has never faithfully

1006. served and never bore fruit.

1007. Just hanging around, but never

  1008. bearing fruit.

1009. And I challenge you today, quit making

1010. the life stage excuses that cause you

1011. not to be everything that God would

  1012. have you to be.

1013. Make today be the day that God digs

  1014. around at your roots.

1015. Throw some manure on it.

1016. I want you to know I prayed for you.

1017. In preparing this sermon, I prayed for

  1018. you.

1019. And then what about other Christians

1020. who have a burden for others?

1021. You know, you want to keep them your

1022. friends, but you want them to know

1023. Jesus and there's a fine line with

1024. being patient with them and feeling a

1025. deadline coming and Jesus tells us again

1026. and again, you're going to see it in

  1027. coming days.

  1028. The day is coming.

1029. Many of the parables that he shares

1030. has to do with the door shutting,

1031. the master returning, the judgment

  1032. that's coming.

  1033. I don't like talking about looming

  1034. judgment.

  1035. That's not my thing.

  1036. I'm a positive person.

1037. Jesus wanted you to feel the looming

  1038. judgment of the Lord.

  1039. Why?

1040. Because we need to get our lives right.

1041. Because we need to bear fruit in this

  1042. season.

1043. Because if you're a Christian today, you

1044. have a faith that needs to be shared.

1045. One thing they never prepared me for.

1046. In seminary, in watching preachers growing up,

1047. watching my pastors growing up,

1048. I never was prepared for what I call the

1049. sacred closets of people's lives that God has

1050. allowed me to be in.

1051. When you walk in with a family besides someone

  1052. dying, I think I don't belong here.

1053. But that dear family wants their pastor to be a part of

  1054. that.

  1055. I know it's a sacred time.

  1056. I know it's a personal time.

  1057. I know it's a private time.

  1058. I get it.

1059. And Fred, you know, you never get used to that.

1060. I've seen them breathe their last.

1061. And I've never had one say,

1062. boy, I wish I'd wasted more time.

1063. Never had somebody facing death tell me in my final visits with

  1064. them.

  1065. Boy, if I wouldn't have,

1066. if I wouldn't have spent my time so wisely,

  1067. I wish I'd wasted more time.

1068. But I've had more than a handful tell me.

1069. I wish I would have taken advantage of my time and the

  1070. opportunity that I had.

1071. And I'm simply saying this morning,

  1072. wish no longer.

  1073. Dig around.

  1074. Dig deep.

1075. Throw some manure on your life.

  1076. Just dung it.

1077. Just allow your life to be changed by the ever abiding presence of

1078. the sweet Holy Spirit of God and the promise of Jesus.

1079. With every head bowed and every eye closed,

1080. I want to ask you this morning.

1081. Has there ever been a time in your life when you've surrendered your

1082. life to follow the Lord Jesus Christ?

1083. I'm not asking you if everybody thinks you have.

  1084. I'm asking you,

1085. have you ever given your heart and life to the Lord Jesus Christ?

1086. I want you to know we're going to stand and we're going to sing in

  1087. just a moment.

1088. But more important than that,

1089. we do this for you to have the opportunity to respond in obedience.

1090. And we will take the time to share with you what that means.

1091. We're not going to rush that deal for you.

1092. But as the Holy Spirit convicts your heart and speaks to you,

1093. you respond to him today.

1094. And we'll guide you in that.

1095. Maybe God's drawing you to be a part of this church.

1096. You feel led to join us in the journey.

  1097. We're not perfect,

  1098. nor are you.

  1099. We'll work out great.

1100. You just come down and let us know that.

1101. We'll be happy to help you in that process.

1102. We may begin the process for that,

  1103. but you come.

1104. Maybe you have been saved and you know you're a Christian,

1105. but you've never been baptized by mercy.

1106. You've never publicly proclaimed your faith in obedience to the way

1107. Christ not only showed us,

  1108. but instructed us.

1109. So I encourage you to be obedient in that.

1110. Or maybe you're just here this morning and you just need some digging

1111. around to take place in your roots.

  1112. I mean,

1113. you just want to be honest with God.

  1114. You need some work.

  1115. There's not enough fruit.

1116. And I want you to know the steps down here behind me are a makeshift

1117. altar for you to lay it down before the Lord.

1118. I realize you can do that where you are.

1119. You can do it up here.

  1120. I just,

1121. I just want you to be obedient.

1122. I just know the spirit of God is stirring today.

1123. He's moving in hearts and lives and I don't want you to be disobedient.

1124. I just want you to do what he tells you to do.

1125. I'll be happy to pray with you,

1126. guide you in any way in any of that or anything else on your heart and life.

  1127. Lord Jesus,

  1128. lead us right now.

  1129. I pray your blessings,

  1130. your leadership,

1131. your guidance upon every person in this place and every person watching online.

  1132. God,

  1133. God,

1134. you move and work and help us to be obedient to follow you right now.

  1135. In Jesus' precious name,

  1136. Amen.
