  1. Well, tomorrow is Labor Day, and that was started to celebrate those that labor and

  2. to give them a working man's holiday at the end of the summer.

  3. It was intended to be there for those who were wore slap out.

  4. Well, and somebody yawned as soon as I said that.

  5. We all need a break sometimes, especially when you wore slap out.

  6. You know what that means?

  7. You know what it means to be wore slap out?

  8. Now, when a dog's tired, it lays down.

  9. But when a dog's wore slap out, his tongue hangs out sideways,

  10. his heart's racing on the floor when he's laying there,

  11. and he won't move even if a squirrel goes right by his nose.

  12. That's when you wore slap out.

  13. When I played football, I used to come in from football practice.

  14. Couldn't even eat.

  15. I was so tired and worn out.

  16. I'd just go get a cup and put a couple of scoops of ice cream in it

  17. and some whole milk and a couple of eggs and a banana

  18. and some Joe Weider weight gain because I weighed 155 pounds,

  19. praying for 170.

  20. Some things never change.

  21. I'm praying for 170.

  22. Not really.

  23. I was skinny once.

  24. I said I'll never be skinny again, but I meant it apparently.

  25. What I didn't read on that package was,

  26. Joe Weider weight gain is time release.

  27. And about five years later, it kicked in.

  28. And it ain't let up.

  29. It's serious.

  30. I worked lawn maintenance for a summer between college and seminary,

  31. and I could not wait to get back in the truck

  32. because you could sleep from one stop to the next.

  33. War slap out.

  34. If you're wore out, you want to sit down.

  35. But if you're wore slap out, you don't want to move.

  36. Now let me just ask you, have you ever been worn slap out?

  37. I don't mean from the yard.

  38. I mean in life.

  39. Maybe your life is just too hectic.

  40. It's too busy.

  41. Maybe your marriage is not honoring God like it needs to be,

  42. and it's wearing you out,

  43. and not honoring each other, and it's wearing you out.

  44. Maybe your children are rebelling,

  45. scaring you to death, going in the wrong direction,

  46. wearing you out.

  47. Maybe you feel dry inside,

  48. spiritually sapped,

  49. worn out.

  50. It could be that your finances are horrible.

  51. It could be that your debt's growing.

  52. It could be that your bills are piling up.

  53. Maybe it's because you have the weight of a sin

  54. bearing down upon you.

  55. Maybe habitual sin in your life weighing down upon you.

  56. You are unclean, and you are miserable,

  57. and you are worn slap out.

  58. Sometimes it seems like there's not an end in sight

  59. when you feel like that.

  60. So what do you do?

  61. What do you do when you don't know what to do?

  62. How do you survive when you're worn slap out?

  63. Well, I'm glad you asked.

  64. Because today we're going to take a break

  65. from the stories that Jesus told,

  66. the parables in Luke,

  67. to hear a request of Jesus

  68. that I believe we all need to hear,

  69. at least from time to time.

  70. It's in Matthew chapter 11,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  71. beginning in verse 28.

  72. Jesus said,

  73. come to me.

  74. All who labor and are heavy laden,

  75. I'll give you rest.

  76. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  77. for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  78. and you'll find rest for your souls.

  79. For my yoke is easy,

  80. and my burden is light.

  81. Come to the Lord and rest, folks.

  82. Thank God he invites us to come.

  83. 1 Peter chapter 5 verse 7 says,

    1 Peter 5:7

  84. cast all your anxieties on him

  85. because he cares for you.

  86. Now Peter's not just saying,

  87. give him your worries one by one

  88. as they come up.

  89. No, that's not what he's saying.

  90. Peter is saying,

  91. commit your life

  92. to cast your burdens upon the Lord.

  93. I heard from a man

  94. that led Orlando Wilson to the Lord.

  95. Orlando Wilson, a famous fisherman,

  96. TV shows and those things.

  97. And he asked Orlando Wilson,

  98. asked his pastor,

  99. he said,

  100. will you teach me about Jesus?

  101. And he asked Orlando,

  102. will you teach me how to fish?

  103. He said, I will.

  104. Sounds like a deal.

  105. He said they went fishing

  106. and he cast out of line.

  107. And Orlando said,

  108. no, that's not how you do it.

  109. You don't just throw it out there.

  110. If you want to fish,

  111. if you want to fish,

  112. when you cast,

  113. you cast it out there.

  114. Throw it out there.

  115. That's what that word means.

  116. That word means sling it.

  117. Sling it down at the Lord.

  118. Give it to him.

  119. I like the way the Amplified Bible puts it.

  120. It says this,

  121. casting the whole of your care,

  122. all your anxieties,

  123. all your worries,

  124. all your concerns,

  125. once and for all on him.

  126. For he cares for you affectionately

  127. and cares for you watchfully.

  128. Too many times we want to care for us,

  129. but we want him to care for us,

  130. but we still want to carry it.

  131. Three generations ago,

  132. there was a guy coming down the road on a cart.

  133. There was a man on the side of the road

  134. with a big old bag on his back,

  135. weighed down,

  136. wore slap out.

  137. The cart stopped to pick him up.

  138. When the man got on the cart,

  139. he sat down,

  140. but he kept that bag over his shoulder,

  141. continued to be weighed down by that bag.

  142. And the man driving that cart said,

  143. why don't you just lay that down?

  144. And the man said,

  145. oh no,

  146. it's good for you to carry me.

  147. I couldn't expect you to carry my burden as well.

  148. That's about how silly we are sometimes, folks.

  149. When we continue to carry stuff

  150. that the Lord has told us to give to him.

  151. Don't pick it back up.

  152. Cast it upon the Lord.

  153. Come to the Lord and rest.

  154. Listen to the Lord and follow.

  155. Listen to him and follow.

  156. It says,

  157. Jesus says,

  158. for my yoke is easy.

  159. Literally,

  160. that means,

  161. yoke means to walk alongside

  162. and learn from.

  163. It's the name for that wood

  164. or iron frame

  165. that joins two oxen together

  166. or draft animals together

  167. to pull a plow

  168. or a cart

  169. or a load.

  170. A new ox

  171. is always

  172. a yoke

  173. to an experienced ox

  174. and they pull that cart together

  175. so he can teach the younger one

  176. and to share that load.

  177. But when he talks about yoke here,

  178. it's also talking about

  179. the yoking of students

  180. to a rabbi.

  181. Ancient rabbis

  182. saw their role in the community

  183. as one of studying,

  184. discussing,

  185. and interpreting

  186. the revealed word of God

  187. and for them at that time

  188. was the Old Testament.

  189. They were to help people

  190. understand that text

  191. and they were to live out

  192. that text before them.

  193. For instance,

  194. what does it mean

  195. when the text says

  196. to remember the Sabbath day

  197. and keep it holy?

  198. How do you do that?

  199. Well, my mama told me

  200. growing up

  201. it meant you didn't go

  202. to the movies on Sunday.

  203. That's one way you do it,

  204. you know.

  205. There's different interpretations

  206. of how you handle that.

  207. Well,

  208. the rabbi

  209. would make that determination

  210. and some would say

  211. that

  212. if you walked over a mile

  213. in one day

  214. that it was considered work.

  215. And so therefore,

  216. and remember,

  217. we're not talking about folks

  218. who did it for exercise,

  219. we're talking about people

  220. who did it to get around,

  221. that if you went more

  222. than a mile,

  223. then it was work

  224. and you were not

  225. keeping the day holy.

  226. Another one said

  227. you can walk

  228. a mile and a half.

  229. It was different interpretations.

  230. Now,

  231. some of those interpretations

  232. depend on how far

  233. they live from the synagogue.

  234. Because if the synagogue

  235. is a mile and a half away

  236. and you can't walk

  237. but a mile a day,

  238. you can't go to the synagogue

  239. on the Sabbath.

  240. And so there were interpretations

  241. that were different

  242. for each one.

  243. One would say

  244. you could do this,

  245. one would say that.

  246. Different ones had

  247. different set of rules

  248. and they added

  249. to the word of God

  250. their rules.

  251. One rabbi's set of rules

  252. or his list of interpretations

  253. was considered

  254. his rabbi's yoke

  255. is what they called that.

  256. And he would invite

  257. young men

  258. to be trained by him

  259. to become a Talmud

  260. or a Jewish scholar.

  261. And if that young man

  262. accepted that invitation,

  263. he would leave his family,

  264. he would leave his village,

  265. he would leave all that he knew

  266. and from that day forward

  267. he was devoted

  268. to the rabbi,

  269. not just teaching,

  270. not just learning

  271. his teachings

  272. but becoming like him

  273. in every way,

  274. going wherever he went,

  275. doing whatever he was doing,

  276. teaching whatever he taught.

  277. It was a total life commitment.

  278. It was taking on his yoke.

  279. It means you see how he walks

  280. and you walk the same.

  281. You commit to him

  282. and let him lead.

  283. And then one rabbi said,

  284. my yoke is easy.

  285. And his name is Jesus.

  286. And when you commit

  287. your life to Christ,

  288. you're taking on

  289. as an unexperienced sheep.

  290. You're taking on

  291. the yoke of the Lord

  292. for him to train you,

  293. for him to walk with you,

  294. for him to interpret life

  295. through his word to you,

  296. and for you to have

  297. total commitment

  298. to follow him.

  299. Jesus didn't drag

  300. folks down

  301. like a rabbi would.

  302. Jesus don't belabor you

  303. with a bunch of rules

  304. like the Pharisees did.

  305. Matter of fact,

  306. Jesus spoke against them

  307. again and again

  308. in Matthew 23.

  309. But he said

  310. in verse 4 particularly,

  311. he said,

  312. they tie up

  313. heavy burdens,

  314. hard to bear,

  315. and lay them

  316. on people's shoulders,

  317. but they themselves

  318. are not willing

  319. to move them

  320. with their finger.

  321. I know preachers

  322. like that.

  323. I do.

  324. Deacons may be like that.

  325. Church leaders

  326. may be like that.

  327. Church people sometimes

  328. will look down on you.

  329. But I want to be clear,

  330. whatever your path

  331. has been,

  332. that is not of God,

  333. and that is not

  334. what God does,

  335. and that's not

  336. his message.

  337. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8:1

  338. verse 1 says,

  339. there is therefore

  340. now no condemnation

  341. for those,

  342. thank God,

  343. who are in Christ Jesus.

  344. No condemnation.

  345. In reality,

  346. it was the Pharisee type,

  347. it was the hypocritical

  348. church aristocracy

  349. that Christ

  350. was offering

  351. relief from

  352. when he said,

  353. my yoke is easy.

  354. He's talking about

  355. those that have

  356. loaded you down

  357. with rules and regulations

  358. on your shoulders,

  359. and some people

  360. make it their mission

  361. to sap the joy

  362. out of your salvation

  363. completely.

  364. I mean,

  365. if you're enjoying it,

  366. it must not be of God,

  367. right?

  368. There's a Greek word

  369. for that,

  370. it's baloney.

  371. Some people have

  372. a persistently

  373. negative tone

  374. to what they say.

  375. I want to be clear

  376. this morning,

  377. that's not of Christ,

  378. thank God,

  379. that's not the gospel.

  380. Christ came to give us

  381. freedom,

  382. not for riotous living,

  383. Christ came to give us

  384. freedom as a standard

  385. to be lived by,

  386. rules to guide

  387. your life by,

  388. but all of them

  389. are for our own protection.

  390. We see people

  391. abandon them today,

  392. we see ourselves

  393. abandon them today.

  394. We go our own way,

  395. we make our own decisions,

  396. we sin against God,

  397. don't say,

  398. preacher,

  399. look at me,

  400. because I've got news for you,

  401. the word of God

  402. says we all do it,

  403. and the reality is

  404. to keep us right

  405. with God

  406. where true freedom

  407. and wholeness

  408. and fullness

  409. is found,

  410. we need to listen

  411. to Him

  412. and follow

  413. Him.

  414. Now let me be clear,

  415. when you take

  416. that little

  417. cup

  418. that has the bread

  419. and the juice

  420. in it

  421. and we participate

  422. that in just a little bit,

  423. you know what you're saying?

  424. I commit my life

  425. to you, Lord.

  426. Your body was given

  427. for me,

  428. your blood was shed

  429. for me,

  430. and I've committed

  431. my life,

  432. I've taken you

  433. in,

  434. I've digested

  435. what you gave me.

  436. Be sure

  437. to come to Him

  438. and rest

  439. and listen to Him

  440. and follow

  441. and trust the Lord.

  442. Trust Him,

  443. He's easy on you.

  444. He said,

  445. my burden

  446. is light.

  447. He's not harsh,

  448. He's not overbearing,

  449. He's not oppressive,

  450. His yoke is easy,

  451. His burden is light,

  452. not because His standards

  453. are less,

  454. but because He

  455. carries your burden,

  456. because He

  457. trains you up,

  458. because He

  459. sends you out,

  460. because He

  461. accompanies you

  462. in all of your way.

  463. He's looking out

  464. for you,

  465. He'll give you a peace.

  466. You don't have to worry

  467. about life

  468. or where He may take you,

  469. peace is resting

  470. in Him

  471. because He's worthy

  472. of it.

  473. You can rest in Him.

  474. Don't worry about tomorrow,

  475. today has enough

  476. of its own,

  477. tomorrow worry about itself.

  478. God's already there,

  479. folks,

  480. you can rest in Him

  481. with that.

  482. He'll give you

  483. the restoration you need,

  484. He'll give you

  485. the rekindling you need,

  486. the nurture that you need,

  487. He'll give you the power

  488. that you need to face,

  489. whatever comes tomorrow.

  490. And He says,

  491. I am gentle.

  492. In other words,

  493. He comes with a loving

  494. and gentle spirit.

  495. He says,

  496. I am humble.

  497. Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  498. says He emptied Himself.

  499. He became a servant

  500. for us.

  501. He became obedient

  502. even to the death

  503. on the cross.

  504. He's not,

  505. He's not going to

  506. one-up you.

  507. I want you to hear me

  508. this morning.

  509. Jesus died

  510. for you.

  511. He died for you.

  512. And He definitely

  513. lives for you.

  514. He's making intercession

  515. for you.

  516. And He loves you dearly.

  517. I heard about a photographer

  518. who took pictures

  519. at school

  520. on picture day.

  521. First graders lined up

  522. to get their picture made.

  523. And in order to get

  524. that picture made

  525. with a first grader

  526. that don't want to get

  527. their picture made,

  528. you got to make small talk

  529. and all that kind of stuff.

  530. I don't want to be

  531. a first grade photographer.

  532. He asked one little girl,

  533. what are you going to be

  534. when you grow up?

  535. She said,

  536. tired.

  537. How many of you

  538. are there today?

  539. If that's the way you feel,

  540. come to the table

  541. of the Lord.

  542. Refresh yourself

  543. with a fresh reminder

  544. of what He's done

  545. for you.

  546. Confess your sins.

  547. God will save you.

  548. Just commit your life

  549. to Him.

  550. And if He has saved you

  551. and you know that,

  552. recommit your life to Him.

  553. Commit to this church today

  554. as God leads you.

  555. Rest in the Lord today.

  556. What's that burden

  557. that you have

  558. upon your heart today?

  559. You leave it with God.

  560. He can handle it.

  561. He already knows

  562. how it's going to turn out.

  563. We just need to rest it

  564. in His hands.

  565. With every head bowed

  566. and every eye closed,

  567. I want to ask you

  568. this morning,

  569. if there's ever been

  570. a time in your life

  571. when you've surrendered

  572. your life

  573. to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  574. you've ever confessed

  575. your sins to Him

  576. and agreed with Him

  577. that you're a sinner,

  578. needing a Savior,

  579. knowing that you're

  580. separated from God

  581. due to your sin.

  582. If you've never done that,

  583. today's the day

  584. for you to do that.

  585. Today's the day

  586. for you to say,

  587. Lord,

  588. I want you to save me.

  589. I want you to change me.

  590. I want you to make me

  591. what you'd have me to be.

  592. And I want you to know

  593. there's a lot of things

  594. we're going to do

  595. in the next few moments,

  596. but there's nothing

  597. more important

  598. than the opportunity

  599. that you have

  600. to surrender your life

  601. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  602. If you've never done that,

  603. I encourage you to come.

  604. In just a few moments,

  605. when we stand to sing,

  606. you come.

  607. I'd be happy to guide you

  608. in that process.

  609. Maybe you have done that

  610. and you know you're a Christian,

  611. but you know

  612. that you are wore out

  613. probably from your own mistakes,

  614. but maybe from somebody else's.

  615. And today you need to be clean.

  616. The Apostle Paul said that,

  617. told the church in Corinth,

  618. he said,

  619. some of y'all are sick

  620. because you've come

  621. to the table of the Lord

  622. with unconfessed sin

  623. in your life.

  624. Because you've not acted

  625. appropriately toward each other.

  626. Because you're not clean

  627. before him

  628. and take part in that.

  629. It's making you sick.

  630. That's what he said.

  631. God takes it seriously, folks.

  632. And so if there's matters

  633. in your life

  634. that you need to confess,

  635. repent of today,

  636. you do that

  637. before you take

  638. this bread and this cup.

  639. It is open for all

  640. who've been saved

  641. and baptized

  642. to take today.

  643. If you're a child here

  644. and that's never happened

  645. to you,

  646. your parents do something,

  647. it's not snack time.

  648. When you leave here,

  649. I encourage you

  650. to ask them about.

  651. Ask them about

  652. what they did today

  653. and what that means.

  654. Parents,

  655. that can cause

  656. a wonderful gospel conversation

  657. to come in the home.

  658. Maybe you're here

  659. and you're not a kid,

  660. but the reality is

  661. you've never given

  662. your heart and life

  663. to the Lord.

  664. Are there's hindrances

  665. in your life

  666. even as a Christian

  667. that cause you

  668. from being everything

  669. God would have you to be?

  670. Scripture tells us

  671. to be clean.

  672. And so I would tell you

  673. today to repent

  674. and make it right.

  675. You can do that

  676. where you are,

  677. you can do it

  678. at this altar.

  679. That's what it's here for.

  680. You just obey God

  681. and do what He tells you to do.

  682. Maybe God's drawing you

  683. to be a part of this church.

  684. God's doing a work

  685. in this church

  686. and I'm thankful

  687. to be a part of it.

  688. If God's drawing you

  689. to be a part of that,

  690. there's no need

  691. for you to hold that off.

  692. So I encourage you to come.

  693. We'd love to guide you

  694. in that process

  695. of what it means

  696. to be a member

  697. of Pickens First.

  698. Maybe you've been saved

  699. but never been baptized

  700. as a believer.

  701. That's the first step

  702. of obedience

  703. and it's a hindrance

  704. in your life

  705. if that's not happened.

  706. So I encourage you

  707. to be obedient

  708. and follow Him today.

  709. We'll be happy

  710. to guide you in that.

  711. We're not doing it today,

  712. but we'll be happy

  713. to guide you

  714. and set that up for you

  715. because we do plan

  716. to do it in the near future.

  717. I don't know

  718. what God's telling you folks,

  719. but let's get right, okay?

  720. Let's do this thing right.

  721. Let's do exactly

  722. what God tells us to do.

  723. Lord Jesus,

  724. I love you

  725. and I thank you, dear God,

  726. for your love for us.

  727. Lead us right now

  728. to be obedient

  729. to follow you

  730. as you lead.

  731. In Jesus' precious name,

  732. amen.

  733. Amen.

  734. Stand up.
