  1. Thank you for that wonderful worship this morning.

  2. Good morning, church.

  3. Three things that were not in my notes, but I've got to mention them up front since Tim

  4. actually said something about football.

  5. I wasn't going to talk about football, but we will be having a tailgate over in Charlotte

  6. later on this afternoon.

  7. For those of you who are volunteer fans, I did graduate from University of Tennessee.

  8. Anyway, we won't go there.

  9. Sorry.

  10. Finally.

  11. The second thing I want to say, again, thank you for this invitation, Pastor Daniel and

  12. Pastor Jeff.

  13. I was in the back talking to Jeff before the service began, and I was really asking how

  14. long the service was.

  15. I said, well, how long do I have, an hour?

  16. And he said, if you take an hour, they're going to walk out in the middle of it, so I'm watching

  17. the time.

  18. And secondly, thirdly, if my dates are correct, we've got a lot going on today with the missions

  19. conference.

  20. But I do believe, I saw on my iPhone, that today is Pastor Appreciation Day.

  21. And if I'm wrong, you need to appreciate your pastor anyway when you've got a Bible believing,

  22. fully proclaiming the whole counsel of God as you do in this pastor.

  23. So can we praise God for our pastors here in this congregation?

  24. Let me do the most important thing I can do this morning and read from God's Word, the

  25. Word He's laid on my heart for this service this morning here at First Baptist Church of

  26. Pickens.

  27. a very familiar passage when we're talking about missions and about harvest time and going

  28. out into the fields, which are so ripe for us to show the good news of Jesus Christ from

  29. Matthew chapter 9, beginning with verse 35.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  30. And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming

  31. the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.

  32. And when He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless

  33. like sheep without a shepherd.

  34. Then He said to His disciples, the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

  35. Therefore, and this is a command, by the way, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send

  36. out laborers into His harvest.

  37. So I want us to begin this service in prayer and that we pray earnestly.

  38. In the original language, this word for prayer basically means to beg, to cry out, to implore

  39. upon Almighty God for the Lord to send out laborers into the harvest field.

  40. A command from the Lord Jesus Christ, something that was on His heart, that only God can do it.

  41. And my prayer this morning for this service, in which I'm going to share a very simple passage,

  42. is that even today you will hear the call of God upon your life or upon those that you know

  43. the call is up around in their life for Him to send out laborers into the harvest field.

  44. It is harvest time if we've ever been in one in our entire lifetime.

  45. For such a time as this, it's harvest time.

  46. It doesn't require seminary.

  47. It doesn't require any professional education other than the fact that God's call is on you

  48. and you must go.

  49. It has nothing to do with how old you are or how young you are.

  50. Caleb really came into his own when he was 85 years old when he cried out,

  51. Lord, give me my mountain.

  52. So all of us senior citizens in here, if you've never answered the call, it's not too late.

  53. This world needs a fresh anointing from God and the Holy Spirit to send the good news of Christ Jesus

  54. to those who have never heard it.

  55. As we were talking about the Afghanis even this morning, how could we forget that picture

  56. of the last day our troops were in Afghanistan formally and the plane was taking off

  57. and the crowds on the runway and even some who clung to the outside of the plane to try to escape that nation?

  58. How can we fail to see the images of the homeless in our streets?

  59. The desperate, the bullied, the lost, the forgotten, the refugees, the mentally ill,

  60. those who have never heard the sweet news of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  61. that God sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins.

  62. What sweet news for somebody today that our sins are forgiven by the blood of Jesus.

  63. What wonderful news that someone needs to hear.

  64. If you know Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord, there is therefore now no condemnation

  65. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  66. No shame, no guilt, no fear.

  67. Oh God, may we be that people that God uses in this hour of creation.

  68. Father, I ask you to take these few moments and use them for your glory.

  69. Lord of the harvest, I pray in the name of Jesus and by the conviction of the Holy Spirit

  70. that even today, now, you bring forth harvesters for your glory.

  71. In Jesus' name, amen.

  72. Well, I bring you greetings from Dr. Kevin Ezell, president of the North American Mission Board.

  73. I was with him and the trustees just a few weeks ago in Chicago,

  74. and we heard the good news, hopefully you have as well,

  75. that Annie Armstrong Easter offering surpassed all of our prognostications.

  76. $68.6 million that our Southern Baptists have given for the mission work

  77. to plant churches and to spread the gospel in North America.

  78. So thank you for your giving.

  79. You're part of 47, 46,000 churches, 16 million Southern Baptists

  80. who have given sacrificially even during the pandemic.

  81. We continue to give.

  82. So thank you, thank you, thank you.

  83. With that money, we've planted over 1,000 churches since 2010, the last 10 years.

  84. With your prayers and your offerings,

  85. yes, we have 3,720 endorsed Southern Baptist chaplains

  86. who serve in places where the churches cannot often go,

  87. 1,500 chaplains in the armed services,

  88. chaplains in hospitals and health care and hospices,

  89. chaplains who are on disaster relief deployments

  90. and corporate chaplains serving in Fortune 500 companies

  91. and prison chaplains and law enforcement chaplains

  92. and community service chaplains.

  93. Let me just give you just a couple of quick stories.

  94. Chaplain Captain Jose Rondon, a graduate of North Greenville University.

  95. You may have heard of him in 2018.

  96. He was at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

  97. Some of you veterans may have heard of that place.

  98. And over an 18-month period of time,

  99. God used him and his chaplaincy team

  100. to lead over 2,000 young men and women

  101. in the United States Army going through basic training

  102. to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.

  103. My pharisaical robes got on me when I keep seeing these numbers rising.

  104. And by the way, it's not about numbers.

  105. But it is kind of interesting when you see thousands coming to Christ.

  106. So I did what anybody else would do.

  107. I sent a team to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri,

  108. to see what was going on, to see if Jose was not,

  109. maybe he didn't know how to count,

  110. or maybe he was embellishing the numbers,

  111. but it was true.

  112. So then we have to ask collegiate ministers and others,

  113. what's the reason that these young 18- to 24-year-olds

  114. are going to the gospel as they hear it

  115. and they're making Christ Savior and Lord?

  116. It's because so many of them, first of all,

  117. at least in the armed services,

  118. have never held a Bible in their hands.

  119. As an 18- to 24-year-old, we give them Bibles,

  120. they begin reading the truth, the whole truth,

  121. nothing but the truth, and that's what they are interested in.

  122. They're not interested in relativism or secularism.

  123. They're truly interested in truth,

  124. and not just any truth, but the truth of God, spiritual truth.

  125. They're interested in relationships,

  126. meaningful relationships with people

  127. who have found purpose and significance

  128. in their lives through the gospel

  129. and meeting Jesus as Savior and Lord,

  130. and they're looking for community.

  131. Oh, my goodness.

  132. We're talking about the bride of Christ.

  133. May our churches,

  134. may First Baptist Church of Pickens

  135. one day soon be filled with young people

  136. that are flocking here from our public schools,

  137. that are coming here to find that truth

  138. in Jesus Christ alone.

  139. I could tell you about Chris Rice,

  140. a young chaplain down at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

  141. Every 11 weeks, we make soldiers

  142. out of these young men and women.

  143. Every 11 weeks, he'll baptize some 70,

  144. some 100 young men and women

  145. who have come to saving knowledge of faith

  146. in Christ Jesus as their Lord and their Savior.

  147. I could tell you about Michael Slaughter,

  148. a young Navy lieutenant up in Chicago

  149. with the regional training command

  150. where every cycle of those basic trainees

  151. as we make sailors out of these young men and women,

  152. some 200, 250,

  153. have made professions of faith in Christ Jesus,

  154. and they come for believer's baptism.

  155. That's great news,

  156. but let me give you some bad news.

  157. Can I just give you some bad news?

  158. Baptisms are down in the Southern Baptist Convention.

  159. According to Lifeway Research,

  160. we have dipped to a level that we haven't seen

  161. since 1918 and 1919.

  162. After the influenza,

  163. the Spanish flu that took so many people's lives.

  164. Hey, let me tell you something else.

  165. Church attendance is down.

  166. I've heard a statistic once

  167. that while we're meeting in this wonderful place,

  168. about 11 churches close their doors

  169. every week in our denomination.

  170. Those answering the call to the gospel,

  171. those answering the call to be laborers in the field

  172. as pastors, as missionaries, as chaplains,

  173. those numbers are down in our Baptist colleges

  174. and our seminaries.

  175. We so desperately need a harvest of laborers

  176. who will go out into the field.

  177. May we pray the Lord of the harvest

  178. sends more laborers into the field.

  179. That's what this passage is all about

  180. in Matthew 9, verses 35 through 38.

    Matthew 9:35–38

  181. Some refer to this as a turning point

  182. in the gospel of the book of Matthew.

  183. It's a key that needed to be understood.

  184. If you read Matthew 3 through 9,

  185. beginning with Jesus' baptism,

  186. where he fully identified himself

  187. as righteous before God,

  188. he who was without sin was baptized,

  189. going into the desert for 40 days and 40 nights,

  190. preparing himself for his mission,

  191. being tempted by the things

  192. that we're all tempted about,

  193. the lust of the eyes, the pride of life,

  194. and the pride of this world.

  195. And yet he committed himself

  196. to serve Almighty God

  197. with his mind, body, soul, spirit, and strength.

  198. And then in Matthew 4, verse 17,

    Matthew 4:17

  199. Jesus began to preach

  200. the gospel of the kingdom.

  201. Do you know what the gospel of the kingdom is?

  202. Jesus put it this way

  203. in his first public address

  204. from the book of Isaiah.

  205. The Spirit of the Lord has anointed me

  206. to preach good news to the poor,

  207. to proclaim liberty

  208. to those who are captive,

  209. to set free those who are oppressed,

  210. and to proclaim the year,

  211. the time, right now,

  212. of the Lord's favor.

  213. You read the following chapters

  214. up to chapter 9, verse 35,

  215. and you see that he healed the sick,

  216. cleansed the leper,

  217. cast out demons,

  218. and raised the dead,

  219. broke fevers,

  220. with a word,

  221. healing every disease,

  222. every sickness.

  223. Brothers and sisters,

  224. I don't know where you come from.

  225. I've been Southern Baptist all my life,

  226. but I believe that we may see

  227. in this dark and dying world

  228. the day when God uses his labors

  229. with a word

  230. to heal the sick,

  231. cleanse the leper,

  232. yes, cast out demons,

  233. and raise the dead.

  234. I don't hear one amen in this room.

  235. Look, this world needs some good news.

  236. Does it not need some good news?

  237. I read an article recently

  238. that says that this pandemic

  239. of 2020 and 2021

  240. has done something to us psychologically,

  241. and we have not paid

  242. the price

  243. and not really seen

  244. how it has affected us

  245. mentally

  246. and emotionally

  247. with the isolation

  248. and the rolling traumas

  249. and the loss

  250. financially,

  251. relationally,

  252. and death.

  253. We have not paid the price.

  254. We've not caught our breath.

  255. Do you see the crowds

  256. that are struggling

  257. with this world?

  258. What did Jesus see?

  259. The Scripture says

  260. He saw the crowds.

  261. I think one of the reasons

  262. that we don't see the crowds

  263. is that we don't pick our eyes up

  264. off of our iPhones

  265. or our Facebook pages

  266. long enough to see

  267. the people walk.

  268. It's interesting

  269. watching people cross the street

  270. in Chicago and other places

  271. and they got their hand

  272. just like this.

  273. That's very dangerous.

  274. You know,

  275. that's hazardous to your health.

  276. But I think if we just took a moment

  277. in the supermarket,

  278. in the mall,

  279. in public places

  280. and just kind of

  281. looked around

  282. we'd see the crowd.

  283. Jesus traveled

  284. in His lifetime,

  285. earthly lifetime,

  286. over 200 towns and villages

  287. in a 40-mile radius

  288. of Galilee.

  289. And the more He spoke

  290. about the gospel

  291. of the kingdom of God,

  292. the bigger the audience.

  293. That ought to tell us something.

  294. The more we talk

  295. about the good news

  296. of Jesus Christ,

  297. about one who has come

  298. to set us free

  299. from our sin,

  300. who forgave us of our sin,

  301. cleansed us of all of our

  302. unrighteousness,

  303. I think people want

  304. and need to hear that.

  305. Do you see

  306. the crowd?

  307. What crowd are you talking about?

  308. How about the college?

  309. Do you see

  310. the 31 million

  311. men and women

  312. in our campuses,

  313. universities,

  314. colleges,

  315. graduate schools?

  316. 33 million.

  317. And Tim,

  318. you may have to correct me,

  319. but the last I saw,

  320. it's less than 1%,

  321. 0.68%

  322. of our collegiate students

  323. have any kind of active faith

  324. in Jesus Christ.

  325. let's talk about

  326. our veterans for a moment.

  327. I spent 38 years

  328. in uniform.

  329. I know something

  330. about that tribe.

  331. How many veterans

  332. we got in here?

  333. Can I see the hands?

  334. I got a few in here.

  335. Thank you for your service.

  336. Since 1775,

  337. when Washington

  338. stood up the Continental Army,

  339. less than 1%

  340. have ever put on

  341. this uniform.

  342. 44 million Americans

  343. since 1775

  344. have worn the uniform.

  345. What's interesting

  346. is that 24 million veterans

  347. are alive today.

  348. It's a large group.

  349. What are our issues?

  350. Post-traumatic stress,

  351. moral injury,

  352. suicide.

  353. You hear the news

  354. about suicides.

  355. 23, 25 veterans

  356. commit suicide

  357. every day,

  358. one every 65 minutes.

  359. The news that's breaking now

  360. is it actually

  361. might be higher

  362. because our veterans

  363. are also overdosing.

  364. Oxycodone,

  365. fentanyl,

  366. other drug-inducing

  367. means to

  368. dull the pain.

  369. We haven't found

  370. a solution yet.

  371. our veterans

  372. need our ministry

  373. to them.

  374. Our collegiate

  375. young men and women

  376. need our ministry

  377. to them.

  378. The Pew Forum

  379. on Religion

  380. and Public Life

  381. says that

  382. the Protestant religion

  383. of Christianity

  384. is no longer

  385. the major denomination

  386. in the United States.

  387. We have lost

  388. a number of our members

  389. to the nuns.

  390. And I don't mean

  391. the Catholic variety.

  392. I mean those

  393. who have no

  394. religious preference.

  395. And then we have

  396. the duns.

  397. Those who are done

  398. with church.

  399. They're done

  400. with something

  401. they haven't seen

  402. lived out in the lives

  403. of those who profess it.

  404. They say,

  405. why would I want

  406. to experience

  407. the abundant life

  408. in Christ?

  409. Because as I look

  410. at your countenance,

  411. I hope it's not catching,

  412. but I don't want it.

  413. Look,

  414. the kingdom of God

  415. is about righteousness,

  416. peace,

  417. and joy

  418. in the Holy Ghost.

  419. And it has nothing

  420. to do with our

  421. current circumstances.

  422. Does anybody know

  423. what I'm talking about

  424. in here?

  425. I want the power

  426. of the resurrection.

  427. But the apostle Paul

  428. says you've got to

  429. also want something else.

  430. You've got to

  431. experience and want,

  432. and you will experience

  433. and want as a child

  434. of God,

  435. a joint heir

  436. with Jesus Christ,

  437. the fellowship

  438. of his sufferings.

  439. We can do all things

  440. though through Christ

  441. who strengthens us.

  442. Do you see the crowds?

  443. A crowded world

  444. of almost 8 million people.

  445. Do you see the crowded cities

  446. where many of our

  447. North American Mission Board

  448. missionaries have gone

  449. to these large cities,

  450. giving it all up

  451. and going to these huge cities

  452. to share the gospel?

  453. Cities that are infested

  454. with extremist ideology

  455. and secularism

  456. and everything else.

  457. Here's the good news.

  458. The harvest is ripe.

  459. I heard someone say recently

  460. that the harvest always comes

  461. at that darkest point

  462. in time.

  463. And how much darker

  464. can it get

  465. than we're living in right now,

  466. brothers and sisters?

  467. We should be expecting God

  468. to break forth

  469. and do something

  470. because people are desperate

  471. do you see

  472. the crowds?

  473. I spend a lot of time

  474. in crowded airports.

  475. It does not get any easier.

  476. I don't care what level

  477. of points you have

  478. with Delta

  479. or American Airlines.

  480. I was in a Memphis airport

  481. several years ago now,

  482. but it's one of those visions

  483. that I just can't get

  484. off my mind.

  485. I was at the baggage claim

  486. waiting for my bag.

  487. I saw a young man

  488. in front of me.

  489. Had a baseball cap on.

  490. Go Army.

  491. And so I tapped him

  492. on his shoulder

  493. to tell him,

  494. thanks for your service.

  495. And when he turned around,

  496. his face

  497. was

  498. almost inhuman looking.

  499. Terribly scarred.

  500. Burned.

  501. It was hard to look him

  502. in the eye.

  503. I thanked him

  504. for his service.

  505. And as I was walking away,

  506. his mother

  507. tapped me on the shoulder

  508. and she said,

  509. please pray for my son.

  510. I said,

  511. well, I'm so sorry.

  512. Was the wound

  513. from an improvised

  514. explosive device?

  515. Did something happen

  516. while he was in Iraq

  517. or Afghanistan?

  518. She said, no.

  519. She said,

  520. he came back from the war

  521. with these war wounds

  522. and he's tried

  523. so many self-destructive things

  524. and he continues

  525. to jump in a fire.

  526. An open fire.

  527. And that's what happened to him

  528. as he is just

  529. almost burned

  530. beyond recognition.

  531. Do you see the crowds?

  532. Do you see the desperate?

  533. The scripture says

  534. that we need

  535. to have the eyes of Jesus

  536. and see what he saw.

  537. He saw the crowds.

  538. He saw an opportunity

  539. with the crowds.

  540. A time that was

  541. pregnant with opportunity

  542. to take the gospel.

  543. The second thing is

  544. when he saw the crowds,

  545. notice what happened.

  546. He had compassion.

  547. If you see the crowds,

  548. there has to be a response

  549. in today's world.

  550. You hear the stories

  551. of these refugees

  552. who have escaped

  553. with their very life

  554. and something has

  555. to happen internally.

  556. Someone once said,

  557. we'll never have a heart

  558. for the harvest

  559. of the gospel

  560. unless we see

  561. the Lord's heart

  562. for the harvest.

  563. as the crowd

  564. thronged around Jesus

  565. and brought him

  566. their physical needs

  567. and their issues

  568. and their sacred stories

  569. and their diseases

  570. and their burdens

  571. and their brokenness.

  572. The scripture said

  573. he had compassion.

  574. I love studying languages.

  575. This word in the Greek

  576. for compassion,

  577. which means pity.

  578. It means your gut

  579. turns splint,

  580. nitsomai.

  581. Boy, now that sounds terrible,

  582. but actually,

  583. a splint, nitsa,

  584. is actually some kind

  585. of a medical procedure.

  586. A splint to me.

  587. I can't even spell that.

  588. I'll just say it.

  589. But Jesus' internal,

  590. his intestines churned

  591. by what he saw.

  592. Has that ever happened to you?

  593. No.

  594. 2004,

  595. I was at the Assassin's Gate.

  596. Nice place to be

  597. in Baghdad.

  598. And there was an explosion.

  599. A Volkswagen van

  600. exploded

  601. with about 500 pounds

  602. of C4 explosive material.

  603. And I can't tell you

  604. what that did

  605. to a crowded marketplace.

  606. But you can only imagine.

  607. Without getting too graphic.

  608. It's one of those

  609. combat memories

  610. I hate to look at.

  611. I feel like it's a stack

  612. of photos

  613. and I don't want to go too deep

  614. and stay too long.

  615. But I mean,

  616. literally,

  617. our troops

  618. were helping the Iraqis

  619. pick

  620. a body

  621. remains

  622. out of trees.

  623. And I remember

  624. walking by

  625. a young Iraqi

  626. soldier

  627. on his knees

  628. in tears.

  629. He was

  630. in tears

  631. just weeping.

  632. I don't speak

  633. a lick of

  634. the Iraqi language

  635. of Arabic.

  636. But my gut

  637. churned for him

  638. as he was

  639. kneeling and weeping

  640. over

  641. part of human remains.

  642. I remember

  643. touching my chest,

  644. my heart,

  645. a term of endearment

  646. in the Islamic world

  647. and I prayed in English

  648. for that brother

  649. and we both wept.

  650. My heart churned

  651. at what happens

  652. in war,

  653. the devastating

  654. effects of war.

  655. My heart churns

  656. for young troops,

  657. 16,

  658. 18 to 24 year olds

  659. who we send to war

  660. and they see things

  661. that human beings

  662. should not see.

  663. They come back

  664. differently.

  665. Losing

  666. their innocence

  667. and a

  668. part of their humanity.

  669. I see their faces

  670. even now.

  671. Do you have

  672. compassion?

  673. Do you allow

  674. the things of this world

  675. to go so deep

  676. that you churn

  677. with pity

  678. and mercy

  679. for them?

  680. The thing

  681. that Jesus saw,

  682. he said he saw

  683. people who were faint,

  684. harassed,

  685. other words.

  686. They were worn out.

  687. They were exhausted.

  688. They were beaten up.

  689. They were battered

  690. and ripped

  691. and torn.

  692. One translation,

  693. they felt like

  694. they were skinned alive.

  695. They were bullied.

  696. That's what he saw.

  697. The harassed

  698. and the helpless.

  699. Those who were thrown down.

  700. Those who were

  701. thrown aside.

  702. Those who were

  703. lifeless,

  704. immobilized,

  705. ready to quit,

  706. tired and weary,

  707. prostrate.

  708. The man at the pool

  709. of Bethesda,

  710. there's your picture,

  711. John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  712. His excuse

  713. when Jesus says,

  714. do you want to be healed?

  715. He didn't say,

  716. yes, Lord.

  717. He said,

  718. Lord,

  719. I've been here

  720. for decades.

  721. I haven't been healed.

  722. Helpless,

  723. hapless,

  724. like sheep

  725. without a shepherd.

  726. Brothers and sisters,

  727. the religious leaders

  728. of that day

  729. were uncaring,

  730. unconcerned.

  731. They didn't lead

  732. anybody to pasture.

  733. They didn't tend

  734. or bind wounds.

  735. They didn't rescue.

  736. They just gave you

  737. more law,

  738. more this or that,

  739. more heavy burdens.

  740. But Jesus came along

  741. and he identified

  742. with the crowd.

  743. Isn't that wonderful

  744. that our Lord

  745. identified with us?

  746. He was wounded

  747. for our transgressions.

  748. He was bruised

  749. for our iniquities.

  750. The scripture says,

  751. the chastisement

  752. of our peace

  753. with God

  754. was upon him

  755. and with his stripes

  756. were healed.

  757. He was the God-man.

  758. He suffered

  759. everything that you

  760. and I will ever suffer

  761. yet without sin.

  762. He never allowed

  763. their circumstances

  764. to take away

  765. the gospel of the kingdom

  766. about the fact

  767. that we can do

  768. all things through Christ

  769. who gives us the strength.

  770. Let me tell you

  771. very quickly,

  772. I know my time is,

  773. I know the Methodists

  774. are going to be out there

  775. somewhere with their,

  776. of course,

  777. we're going to eat here.

  778. I don't know

  779. if they're going to join us.

  780. I don't,

  781. I can't speak

  782. for the pastor

  783. but I remember

  784. Mondays are a good time

  785. when a lot of pastors

  786. decide they're going

  787. to resign

  788. from the ministry.

  789. So pray for your pastor

  790. especially on Mondays.

  791. I had a situation

  792. as a chaplain

  793. that I just couldn't

  794. get fixed.

  795. It was awful

  796. and I lost sleep over it.

  797. You ever lost sleep

  798. over problems?

  799. I'm not going to ask

  800. that question.

  801. I remember waking up

  802. in the night

  803. and said,

  804. Lord,

  805. I quit.

  806. I've been in the ministry

  807. 20 years.

  808. I've been preaching

  809. by the way

  810. since I was 14 years old

  811. similar to your pastor

  812. who called at a young age.

  813. I didn't have a chance.

  814. My mother named me

  815. after a general,

  816. Douglas MacArthur

  817. and a Baptist preacher,

  818. Forrest Lanier.

  819. But I quit.

  820. Lord,

  821. I'm not who you,

  822. I'm probably

  823. in basic Christianity.

  824. I'm not ready

  825. for the advanced course

  826. or the war college

  827. in Christianity.

  828. I quit.

  829. I feel weak,

  830. helpless,

  831. ignorant,

  832. like I'm starting

  833. all over again.

  834. I quit.

  835. And you know what

  836. the Lord said to me?

  837. Congratulations,

  838. I've just recommissioned you.

  839. You're exactly

  840. what I need

  841. in your brokenness.

  842. Because when you

  843. are willing to admit

  844. that you are weak,

  845. God says in 2 Corinthians 12,

  846. then I'm going to be strong.

  847. For my grace is made

  848. perfect in your weakness.

  849. So brothers and sisters,

  850. if you've been called

  851. to the harvest,

  852. don't blame it

  853. on the fact

  854. that you're too weak

  855. to testify

  856. about the goodness

  857. of God in your heart.

  858. That you're exactly

  859. the person

  860. that God wants

  861. instead of one

  862. who has some slick

  863. evangelistic tool

  864. that they can use

  865. and they've memorized it.

  866. But if anybody's

  867. going to be brought

  868. to the kingdom,

  869. it's by God's power

  870. through the Holy Spirit

  871. who convicts.

  872. The wind that blows

  873. as it will.

  874. I've got to bring

  875. this to a close.

  876. Jesus saw the crowds.

  877. He was moved

  878. by what he saw.

  879. And then he said something.

  880. The harvest is plentiful

  881. but the laborers are few.

  882. Here is a command.

  883. Pray, beg, plead with God,

  884. the Lord of the harvest,

  885. to send out laborers

  886. into the harvest.

  887. Now, why would God

  888. not answer

  889. the prayer of his son

  890. and the prayer

  891. for the good news

  892. to be carried

  893. by people

  894. into the harvest field?

  895. The harvest is ripe,

  896. it's full,

  897. it's ready.

  898. There's an urgency

  899. with that kind of praying.

  900. Brothers and sisters,

  901. there's an urgency.

  902. Do you realize

  903. how many people

  904. right now

  905. on this globe

  906. are dying

  907. and going

  908. to a real hell

  909. because they've never

  910. heard the gospel?

  911. or they've never

  912. accepted it?

  913. The harvest is ripe,

  914. the laborers are few.

  915. Send out the laborers

  916. into the harvest.

  917. Well, what kind of,

  918. what's a harvester

  919. supposed to look like?

  920. So I'm going to give you

  921. a job description

  922. for a harvester.

  923. One,

  924. God is looking

  925. for that person

  926. who says,

  927. Jesus Christ

  928. is sufficient

  929. for all my needs

  930. and he's proved

  931. himself

  932. over and over

  933. and over again.

  934. He's taken

  935. the rough edges

  936. of my life

  937. and he's smoothed

  938. them out

  939. through the furnace

  940. of affliction.

  941. These temporary

  942. things that are

  943. doing nothing more

  944. than making me

  945. stronger to serve him

  946. so that I have

  947. a testimony

  948. to share

  949. of the goodness

  950. of God.

  951. I met,

  952. I met a harvester

  953. last night.

  954. I don't know

  955. if she's here.

  956. I walked

  957. into the hotel

  958. where I stayed

  959. and spoke

  960. to this woman

  961. who was sitting

  962. there folding towels.

  963. Boy, let me tell you,

  964. she's had it hard

  965. here this last

  966. year or so.

  967. She's had three

  968. or four recent

  969. surgeries.

  970. Her house just burned.

  971. Her husband

  972. just left her

  973. and I saw

  974. the countenance

  975. of God

  976. on her life

  977. who continued

  978. to tell me

  979. how much

  980. God had blessed

  981. her and kept

  982. her and strengthened

  983. her through it all.

  984. I can't see

  985. in the back row

  986. right now

  987. but I'll tell you

  988. what,

  989. she had a smile

  990. of an angel

  991. on her face.

  992. That's what

  993. you and I

  994. need to be.

  995. If you want

  996. to be a harvester,

  997. we've got to look

  998. like we're harvesting

  999. souls for the glory

  1000. of God.

1001. We've got to be able

  1002. to tell people

  1003. that Jesus' grace

  1004. is sufficient

1005. for all of our needs.

  1006. We might be weak

  1007. but he's going

  1008. to be strong.

  1009. The one who

  1010. began a good work

  1011. in us,

  1012. he's going to

  1013. bring it to completion.

  1014. Yes,

  1015. in this world

  1016. you're going

  1017. to have troubles

  1018. but brothers

  1019. and sisters,

  1020. be of good cheer.

  1021. I have overcome

  1022. the world.

  1023. That's what Jesus said.

  1024. That's who

  1025. he's looking for.

  1026. Individuals who say,

  1027. I know in whom

  1028. I have believed.

  1029. Though he slay me,

1030. I'm going to trust him

  1031. and then I'm going

  1032. to tell somebody

  1033. about his faithfulness.

  1034. I can't keep this fire.

  1035. It's like a fire

  1036. inside my bones.

1037. I've got to let it out.

  1038. Is that your testimony?

  1039. Because if it is,

  1040. the Lord,

  1041. he's recruiting you

  1042. right now.

  1043. Secondly,

  1044. he's looking for those

  1045. who are fully submitted

  1046. to Jesus

  1047. where you say

  1048. without reservation,

  1049. Lord,

  1050. I'll go everywhere

  1051. to everyone

  1052. with the gospel

  1053. of Jesus.

  1054. No strings attached.

  1055. Wherever,

  1056. Lord,

  1057. you lead,

  1058. I will go.

  1059. I can confess

  1060. to you

  1061. that I've had

  1062. my list

  1063. of those places

  1064. that I don't think

  1065. I could go

  1066. and I said,

  1067. Lord,

  1068. send me anywhere

  1069. but I'm not going

1070. to fill in the blanks

  1071. but you know

  1072. what I'm talking about.

  1073. The Lord is looking

  1074. for those

  1075. who are fully submissive

  1076. to his plan.

1077. And then last of all,

  1078. if you really recognize

  1079. that Jesus is sufficient

  1080. for your life,

  1081. he's proven it

  1082. and that you've submitted

  1083. to him,

1084. there's only one other thing

  1085. you've got to do.

  1086. You step out

  1087. on God's word

1088. and you serve his purposes

  1089. for his glory.

  1090. A few years ago,

  1091. I had a dear saint

  1092. in my life,

1093. one of my prayer warriors.

1094. She'd been in and out

  1095. on morphine

  1096. from the cancer

  1097. and she was under

  1098. hospice care.

  1099. I went to visit

  1100. this little 84-year-old woman

  1101. who'd not even

  1102. recognized her family.

  1103. They asked me

  1104. to come see her

  1105. because she was dying

  1106. and when I walked

  1107. into her bedroom,

  1108. she woke up

  1109. and she said,

  1110. Doug Carver,

  1111. you stand firm.

  1112. Don't you quit.

  1113. Don't you let go.

1114. Don't you throw in the towel.

  1115. You stand firm

1116. in the word of God.

  1117. I mean,

1118. the way she said it,

  1119. I almost started apologizing.

  1120. Like,

  1121. hey,

  1122. what's going on here?

  1123. What's she reading

  1124. in my mail?

  1125. Does she know

  1126. my devotional life

1127. because it's not the greatest?

  1128. That's what the Lord

  1129. is looking for,

  1130. to stand firm

  1131. in his word.

  1132. Brothers and sisters,

1133. where this world is going,

  1134. I believe that

  1135. it's going to be

  1136. a challenge for you.

1137. You're going to be challenged

1138. maybe even with your life

  1139. should you choose

  1140. to believe

  1141. everything in this book

  1142. from Genesis to Revelation,

1143. the whole counsel of God.

1144. I close with this last story.

  1145. I promise.

  1146. I know you harvesters

  1147. are getting ready

1148. to come down the aisle.

  1149. The pastor's ready.

  1150. Brother,

1151. you need to come on up

1152. so I know to quit.

  1153. A few years ago,

  1154. 20 years ago,

  1155. 30 years ago,

  1156. I had the opportunity

  1157. to meet

  1158. Richard Vermehron.

1159. You may have never heard of him.

1160. Founder of Voice of the Martyrs.

1161. He spent time in one of the worst jails

  1162. in the world.

  1163. Underground.

  1164. About 12 feet underground.

  1165. For six years.

  1166. Can you imagine that?

1167. They had to carry him in

1168. because while he was in prison,

1169. the guards tried to get him

  1170. to renounce Jesus.

1171. He continued to profess Christ

  1172. as Savior and Lord.

1173. He even witnessed to the guards.

  1174. He was a harvester

  1175. in this prison.

  1176. The guards had taken

  1177. hard rubber hoses

  1178. and beaten

1179. the soles of his feet

1180. so he no longer could feel.

  1181. He couldn't walk.

  1182. All the nerve damage

  1183. was so tremendous.

  1184. But you know,

  1185. as he stood up

  1186. to speak to us,

  1187. he had the look

  1188. of that little lady

  1189. I saw last night

  1190. at the hotel.

  1191. He had the look

  1192. of an angel.

  1193. He said,

  1194. you know,

  1195. really the guards

  1196. were pretty nice

  1197. to us in there.

  1198. He said,

  1199. they gave us

  1200. musical instruments.

  1201. Musical instruments

  1202. in a prison

  1203. 12 feet underground

  1204. for six years?

  1205. He said,

  1206. yeah.

  1207. They gave us

  1208. steel handcuffs.

  1209. And he said,

1210. we could sing with them.

  1211. This is the day.

  1212. Clink, clink.

  1213. This is the day

  1214. that the Lord

  1215. hath made.

1216. And I thought to myself,

  1217. I'm never, ever

  1218. going to allow

  1219. the rocks

  1220. and the trees

  1221. and the hills

  1222. to outshout

  1223. my praise

  1224. to a God

  1225. who can do that

  1226. with a prisoner

  1227. for his faith.

  1228. All right.

  1229. The message

  1230. has been proclaimed.

  1231. It's harvest time.

  1232. I know,

  1233. I know that I know

  1234. that I know

  1235. God is calling

  1236. somebody,

  1237. not just somebody,

  1238. some people

  1239. in this room

1240. to step out in faith

  1241. and say,

  1242. I'm going to be,

  1243. God is calling me

1244. to be one of those

  1245. harvesters

  1246. in these days

  1247. in which I live.

  1248. As we stand

  1249. and sing here

  1250. in just a moment,

1251. I want you to step out

  1252. with the very first

  1253. word we sing.

  1254. Your pastor

  1255. will be down here

1256. and make this a day

  1257. where you are committing

  1258. or recommitting yourself

  1259. to be a harvester.

  1260. Maybe there's somebody

  1261. in this place

  1262. that has never heard

  1263. the gospel

  1264. of Jesus Christ.

  1265. The good news

  1266. that God

  1267. so loved the world

1268. that he sent his son

  1269. to a broken world

  1270. full of sin

  1271. and corruption

  1272. and sinful people

  1273. and he died

  1274. on a cross

  1275. for our sins

  1276. to set us free,

  1277. to redeem us

  1278. from the slavery

  1279. to our flesh

  1280. and to forgive us

  1281. of our sins

  1282. and to give us

  1283. the promise

  1284. of eternity

  1285. in heaven forever.

  1286. If you've never

  1287. repented

  1288. and accepted

  1289. and turned to Jesus

  1290. as the author

  1291. and finisher

  1292. of your faith,

  1293. as your redeemer,

  1294. as your savior,

  1295. would you make

  1296. this day,

  1297. that day of salvation.

  1298. Father,

  1299. take this service now.

1300. Use it for your glory.

  1301. Come Holy Spirit.

  1302. In Jesus' name,

  1303. Amen.

  1304. All right,

  1305. let's go.
