  1. Luke chapter 20. I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving. I know me and my family did and my oldest daughter is on the road right now and so I checked her location right before I stepped up here. We're still doing good so I got that on my mind.

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  2. If you look at the life of Christ and the ministry of Christ it is somewhat mysterious at times and it sure is interesting. So much of the message especially after his resurrection commands us to tell others about his saving and his healing power.

  3. However, earlier in his ministry he told folks to be quiet about what he did. In Matthew chapter 8 he heals a leper and he says see that you say nothing to anyone about this healing.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  4. In Matthew chapter 9 he heals two blind men and Jesus sternly warned them see that no one knows about this. In Matthew chapter 16 he told his disciples tell no one that he was the Christ.

Matthew 9 chapter mention Matthew 16 chapter mention

  5. In Matthew chapter 17 at that mount of transfiguration when those three apostles noticed this amazing sight that they saw, this vision that they saw of Christ transfiguring on that mount.

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  6. He said tell no one of this vision until the son of man has been risen from the dead.

  7. Strange at first but a simple explanation is that it was all a matter of timing.

  8. Christ was in the midst of his ministry of training his disciples to establish the groundwork for the church before he should as Luke 9 verse 51 which I mentioned last week is a tremendous chapter here that of setting his face toward Jerusalem.

    Luke 9:51

  9. However, then he arrives in Jerusalem and he's different.

  10. What he's asked to be quiet about what he's asked to somewhat stay dormant at times so that he could further the ministry before the church leaders of all people would come after him.

  11. Now he's very open about it.

  12. He's made his way to Jerusalem and he's different.

  13. He is open.

  14. He is boldly proclaiming.

  15. He is clear completely about his message and what he'd have for us to share.

  16. He makes his triumphal entry.

  17. He cleanses the temple by turning the tables in the marketplace.

  18. He stirs up the chief priest and the scribes by teaching daily to the massive crowds that they could do nothing about.

  19. And then they ask him.

  20. In Luke chapter 20 verse 2 they said tell us by what authority you do these things.

    Luke 20:2

  21. Or who is it that gave you this authority?

  22. And he follows that with a parable.

  23. One of his last parables, some scholars believe it was the last one chronologically that he shared.

  24. And it's a parable that is clear.

  25. Some parables take interpretation.

  26. This one's quite clear.

  27. No one's asking questions about what this means.

  28. At least not in this setting.

  29. He was certain.

  30. He was clear.

  31. Folks, I want to be certain.

  32. And I want to be clear this morning.

  33. Luke chapter 20 beginning in verse 9.

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  34. And he began to tell the people this parable.

  35. A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while.

  36. When the time came he sent a servant to the tenants so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard.

  37. But the tenants beat him and they sent him away empty handed.

  38. And he sent another servant.

  39. But they also beat and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty handed.

  40. And he sent yet a third.

  41. This one also they wounded and cast out.

  42. Then the owner of the vineyard said, what shall I do?

  43. I'll send my beloved son.

  44. Perhaps they'll respect him.

  45. But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, this is the heir.

  46. Let us kill him so that the inheritance may be ours.

  47. And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

  48. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

  49. He'll come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

  50. Now in this story, the man is God.

  51. And the vineyard is Israel.

  52. And the tenants are the Israelites.

  53. Particularly the church establishment there.

  54. The scribes and the Pharisees that are questioning him and who he's calling out.

  55. And the sent servants are the prophets.

  56. The son of the owner in this story is Jesus.

  57. And when they throw him out of the vineyard in the story, he is saying, you will throw me out of Jerusalem.

  58. And he was thrown out of Jerusalem.

  59. As a matter of fact, he carried a cross out of Jerusalem.

  60. And they killed him outside the city.

  61. Hebrews chapter 13 verse 12 says, so Jesus also suffered outside the gate.

    Hebrews 13:12

  62. That means outside the city.

  63. In order to sanctify the people through his own blood.

  64. And then lastly, this parable says that those who do not welcome the son, those who do not welcome Christ will be destroyed.

  65. It is that simple.

  66. And after he told this, he didn't back off.

  67. He warned of the dangers of the religious leaders.

  68. They tried to question him with tough topics and tried to silence them.

  69. And instead he silences them.

  70. In verse 40, it says of that same chapter, it says they dare not ask him anything else.

  71. They began to try to eliminate him.

  72. He speaks of the destruction of Jerusalem.

  73. That would happen 40 years, almost to the day in which he spoke it.

  74. And he speaks of his return and when he's coming.

  75. He is now very open about all of that.

  76. So I want to be just as open this morning about what that means to us today.

  77. Let's get this straight.

  78. Look at this last parable together.

  79. And then we'll look toward Christmas together.

  80. But let's get this down.

  81. One is this.

  82. Everyone is not pleased to hear of Jesus.

  83. It was true in that day.

  84. It's true today.

  85. If you look at the history of the welcomes that the prophets of God,

  86. these servants that the owner of the vineyard keeps sending in,

  87. that's what that represents.

  88. Look at the prophets.

  89. They were not received very warmly.

  90. At times they were ignored.

  91. Amos was told to hush.

  92. Jonah was a part of our,

  93. he was the most reluctant evangelist you'll ever find.

  94. He was a part of a revival that he didn't want to happen.

  95. But the sad thing was two generations later,

  96. Nahum lets us know that Nineveh was just as bad as it was before that

  97. spiritual awakening had happened.

  98. They went right back to the way in which they lived before.

  99. At times prophets were attacked.

  100. Elijah was threatened and chased by Jezebel.

  101. Micaiah was slapped and imprisoned for telling the truth.

  102. When others wouldn't tell the truth in 1 Kings 22,

  103. Zechariah was stoned to death between the temple and the altar.

  104. Yet God continued graciously to bring his messengers to the tenants.

  105. Now remember, he brought him to the tenants, not the owners.

  106. They didn't own the vineyard.

  107. They were just maintaining the vineyard.

  108. And of course the one that stands out the most was Jesus speaks,

  109. and he speaks directly to them, was John the Baptist.

  110. Who when John the Baptist came speaking,

  111. they were reluctant to hear what he had to say, resisted that.

  112. And of course, because he spoke so boldly against the sin in Herod's life,

  113. and because he was so influenced by evil people,

  114. John the Baptist died

  115. for standing up for his faith.

  116. He spoke all this to the tenants.

  117. Not the owner of the vineyard.

  118. God's the owner, just the tenants.

  119. And I want you to understand

  120. that whatever you have and whatever you are,

  121. we are tenants.

  122. We are maintaining what God has given us.

  123. We're not in charge.

  124. We have a responsibility to that that's invested in us.

  125. But this vineyard is not ours.

  126. This vineyard is his.

  127. We're to make the most of this life that he has given us

  128. because we're sinners.

  129. And our only hope is to do that,

  130. what God has given us to do in our lives.

  131. To make the most of the life that God has given us.

  132. And he is gracious, and he is patient,

  133. but I want you to understand, he is not indifferent.

  134. He's very involved and cares a lot.

  135. Don't ever get confused that the patience of God

  136. is the thought that he's not deeply involved

  137. with our response to him.

  138. Because he is.

  139. And notice that when they did not welcome the first ones,

  140. the owner graciously did not remove the tenants.

  141. He kept giving them new opportunities.

  142. Now it's interesting

  143. that he comes back to these sharecroppers

  144. sharecroppers to get the profits

  145. from what they had raised.

  146. And as the harvest comes in,

  147. you would send people in in stages.

  148. When the first part of it came in,

  149. you'd send somebody to collect it,

  150. a messenger to collect it.

  151. And when the second part came in,

  152. you'd send them again.

  153. Well, the owner noticed that on the first time,

  154. when they didn't respond to him,

  155. he didn't give up on them.

  156. He sent another.

  157. He sent another.

  158. And the response was the same.

  159. I want you to know

  160. that everyone is not pleased to hear of Jesus.

  161. Second thing is this.

  162. Everyone does not welcome Jesus.

  163. Obviously here, the landowner then sends his son.

  164. And the tenants threw him out and killed him.

  165. And Jesus is obviously,

  166. prophetically speaking,

  167. of the mistreatment and his impending death.

  168. And notice in this story,

  169. before they kill him,

  170. they see him coming

  171. and they say in the story

  172. that Jesus told,

  173. if we kill him,

  174. it could all be ours.

  175. You want to know why people don't come to Christ?

  176. Because they don't want to come to his way.

  177. And in his way,

  178. they want it their way.

  179. We want it for ours.

  180. They believe that coming to Christ

  181. has given up too much.

  182. They're afraid that they'll miss out

  183. on what could be theirs.

  184. And in reality,

  185. they walk away

  186. from the greatest opportunity

  187. that they could ever have,

  188. not realizing the ramifications.

  189. I want you to understand something, Christian.

  190. God is sending us out.

  191. It's not time to be silent anymore.

  192. It's not time to be quiet anymore.

  193. Christ, his great commission,

  194. sends us out

  195. to share the love

  196. of the Lord Jesus Christ with folks.

  197. His last words before the ascension

  198. is to make disciples.

  199. As you go,

  200. that don't mean,

  201. hey, I'm all for

  202. going somewhere,

  203. doing a great work.

  204. I'll lead one of these trips this summer.

  205. We'll have a great time

  206. serving the Lord together.

  207. But before we get to the summer,

  208. or before we get to a foreign land,

  209. or before we get to another state,

  210. we'll walk out of here today,

  211. and somebody

  212. will need to know

  213. the truths of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  214. they'll need to know the love of Christ.

  215. And God will plant them

  216. in our path.

  217. And if we pray for God

  218. to open our eyes

  219. and see that

  220. and have an opportunity

  221. to share that,

  222. he will.

  223. He's faithful to do that.

  224. He's sending us out.

  225. His last words were

  226. to make disciples as you go,

  227. to lead them to publicly

  228. confess their faith

  229. through baptism.

  230. Don't stop

  231. until the word

  232. is throughout the world.

  233. He's sending us out.

  234. He's not sending out

  235. the guy beside you

  236. on the pew.

  237. He's not sending out

  238. just the preacher.

  239. It's not just for the staff.

  240. No.

  241. He's sending us out.

  242. Now,

  243. does that mean

  244. they're going to be happy

  245. to see us?

  246. No,

  247. but I want you

  248. to understand something.

  249. They are not rejecting us.

  250. Years ago,

  251. people used to come

  252. to your doors

  253. selling stuff

  254. a lot more than they do now.

  255. Praise God.

  256. They don't do it much anymore,

  257. but they used to.

  258. And I remember one time

  259. this sweet little girl

  260. came to my door,

  261. knocked on her,

  262. rang our doorbell.

  263. I opened the door.

  264. She had Krispy Kreme donuts,

  265. a dozen of them there.

  266. She said,

  267. were you willing to buy

  268. my donuts

  269. to help whatever cause

  270. she made up?

  271. But I said,

  272. honey,

  273. if you only knew

  274. what one of them donuts

  275. would do to me,

  276. it would change my life.

  277. I can't do that.

  278. I gave her some money.

  279. I didn't buy her donuts

  280. and let her go.

  281. I wasn't turning down her.

  282. I was turning down them donuts

  283. because I knew

  284. if I bought them donuts

  285. and I was home alone,

  286. nobody ever know

  287. I bought donuts.

  288. I didn't want her donuts.

  289. And when telemarketers

  290. call me,

  291. yeah,

  292. I might be rejecting them.

  293. I don't know about that,

  294. but let me tell you something.

  295. When you go in the Lord's name

  296. and you share Christ

  297. with somebody,

  298. they're not rejecting you,

  299. they're rejecting God.

  300. When you give the gospel,

  301. you present them

  302. with an opportunity

  303. that they have to do

  304. something with.

  305. And if they reject it,

  306. it's not you.

  307. I want you to get this

  308. because I think

  309. this holds people back

  310. from sharing their faith openly.

  311. Success in sharing

  312. your faith with somebody,

  313. sharing your faith

  314. in Christ with somebody

  315. is not salvation.

  316. Success is when you share

  317. and when you trust

  318. the Lord of the harvest

  319. to do with that seed

  320. that you've sown,

  321. whatever he chooses to do

  322. and work in their life.

  323. Our responsibility

  324. is to share.

  325. Their responsibility

  326. is to respond in obedience.

  327. We don't speak to people

  328. about Christ for our fruition.

  329. God has sent us

  330. and he may already be working

  331. in the hearts and the lives

  332. of those that he's sending us to.

  333. We have no idea

  334. how God has worked

  335. and moved in others' lives.

  336. I had a guy walk in

  337. the other day.

  338. We had a door open

  339. because there's renovation going on.

  340. And a secretary was out.

  341. And so this fellow

  342. walked straight in,

  343. walked straight in the office,

  344. walked straight in my office,

  345. which is fine.

  346. Walked in my office.

  347. And he told me,

  348. he said,

  349. I need to pray.

  350. He said,

  351. I'm Catholic,

  352. but I need to pray.

  353. And he told me

  354. the burden that he had.

  355. And I shared that with you

  356. if you got reminded.

  357. And I knew

  358. because I had seen people

  359. in the building

  360. that I knew

  361. that there would be

  362. other people in the building.

  363. I think some of our ladies

  364. might have been up here.

  365. And I knew that,

  366. I knew what he probably wanted,

  367. but I knew it may not be safe

  368. for others

  369. because I didn't know him.

  370. And so I told him,

  371. I said,

  372. well, can I pray with you?

  373. He said, yeah,

  374. I'd appreciate that.

  375. So we prayed over his need

  376. and his burden.

  377. When we got done praying,

  378. I'm thinking,

  379. why does a Catholic

  380. walk into a Baptist church,

  381. walk straight in this office

  382. for somebody to pray for him?

  383. I don't even think

  384. he knows why he's here.

  385. And I told him that.

  386. I said,

  387. I don't think you're here

  388. because of the reason

  389. you think you're here.

  390. He's looked at me.

  391. I said,

  392. has there ever been

  393. a time in your life

  394. when you've asked

  395. the Lord Jesus personally

  396. to come into your heart

  397. and life,

  398. to save you

  399. and to change you,

  400. to forgive you

  401. of your sins?

  402. Has that ever happened to you?

  403. He said, yeah.

  404. I said, tell me about it.

  405. So he told me about it.

  406. I said, would you stake

  407. eternity on that?

  408. Excuse me?

  409. I said,

  410. if you were to die today

  411. and God were to ask you,

  412. why should I let you

  413. into my heaven?

  414. What do you think

  415. you'd say?

  416. He said, well,

  417. I don't know what I could say.

  418. I failed him so often.

  419. I said, well,

  420. I want you to know

  421. what you can say.

  422. And so in a kind of

  423. discombobulated way

  424. because of the way

  425. the conversation was going,

  426. I shared with him

  427. what Romans says.

  428. I started with Romans 10, 9,

  429. that if you confess

  430. with your mouth

  431. Jesus is Lord

  432. and believe in your heart

  433. that God raised him

  434. from the dead,

  435. you shall be saved.

  436. Now explain what that meant.

  437. I explained that everyone

  438. who calls upon the name

  439. of the Lord,

  440. verse 13,

  441. shall be saved

  442. and how the wages

  443. of his sin

  444. would cause death,

  445. separation forever,

  446. but the gift of God

  447. is eternal life

  448. through Jesus Christ,

  449. our Lord.

  450. God demonstrated

  451. his own love for us

  452. while we were yet

  453. sinners Christ died for us

  454. and I went through

  455. all of that

  456. and shared all that

  457. with him

  458. and then I said,

  459. has anything like that

  460. ever happened to you?

  461. He said,

  462. I think so.

  463. I said,

  464. if you were to die today,

  465. again,

  466. if you were to die today

  467. and stand before God

  468. and he would ask you

  469. why should I let you

  470. in his hand,

  471. what do you think

  472. he'd say?

  473. He said,

  474. because I committed

  475. my life to Christ.

  476. I said,

  477. that's what I needed

  478. to hear.

  479. Have you ever

  480. made that public?

  481. He said,

  482. no.

  483. I said,

  484. you've never told anybody?

  485. He said,

  486. no.

  487. I said,

  488. well,

  489. it's time for you

  490. to do that

  491. and I explained

  492. how scripture said

  493. from Paul's example

  494. in Romans 10,

  495. 9,

  496. when he speaks

  497. of openly confessing

  498. Jesus as Lord,

  499. that's not a quiet thing.

  500. that's not something

  501. that you do

  502. in the pastor's study.

  503. That's something

  504. that you do

  505. in the open

  506. to boldly proclaim

  507. your faith in Christ.

  508. Paul is drawing

  509. a comparison

  510. to standing up

  511. to the Roman Empire

  512. and saying,

  513. curious Christos,

  514. Christ is Lord,

  515. not Caesar is Lord,

  516. Christ is Lord.

  517. That's what he's doing there.

  518. It's very bold

  519. in what he said

  520. and I said,

  521. have you ever been baptized?

  522. He said,

  523. I've been baptized as a child.

  524. I said,

  525. well,

  526. that was a baptism

  527. into a church.

  528. If you've never been baptized

  529. as a believer

  530. since you gave your heart

  531. and life to the Lord,

  532. since your beach experience,

  533. if you've never given your heart,

  534. if you've never been baptized,

  535. you've got your baptism

  536. out of order.

  537. You've never been baptized

  538. as a believer

  539. and that is a first step

  540. of obedience

  541. when you give your heart

  542. and life to the Lord

  543. and I promise you,

  544. listen to me,

  545. I'm not just talking to him,

  546. I'm talking to you.

  547. If you've never done that

  548. as a believer,

  549. it'll be a hindrance

  550. to you and your world.

  551. I promise you,

  552. the devil will cause

  553. a lot of snares

  554. in your path

  555. because the first step

  556. of obedience,

  557. I mean,

  558. if I was in a race,

  559. it'd be a joke anyway

  560. but if I were to stumble

  561. out of the gate,

  562. it'd be mighty hard

  563. to even finish that race

  564. and if you stumble

  565. straight out of the gate

  566. by never making that public,

  567. how that's such a detriment

  568. to your faith.

  569. And so I challenged him

  570. and I said,

  571. I know this ain't

  572. your church background

  573. but I want you to know

  574. you're welcome here

  575. and if you come

  576. and publicly acknowledge that,

  577. we'll baptize you,

  578. allow you to be a member

  579. of this church.

  580. I said,

  581. what do you think about that?

  582. He said,

  583. God drew me here

  584. for a reason today.

  585. I don't have an issue

  586. with that

  587. and I said,

  588. amen, brother

  589. and I said,

  590. we'll be praying

  591. for your need

  592. and I've shared that

  593. with you.

  594. I didn't intend

  595. to share all that

  596. but I'm telling you,

  597. I texted that old boy

  598. yesterday

  599. and I'm praying

  600. for him now

  601. that God will do

  602. a work in his life

  603. and his salvation

  604. will be secure

  605. and he'll know that

  606. beyond a shadow of a doubt

  607. and that he'll publicly

  608. profess that

  609. and live for

  610. the Lord Jesus.

  611. but that's not

  612. my responsibility.

  613. My responsibility

  614. was to share.

  615. My responsibility

  616. was to be sensitive

  617. to the spirit of God

  618. to pick up on the fact

  619. that I'm in the midst

  620. of a conversation

  621. that I didn't intend

  622. to be in.

  623. Why am I in the middle of it

  624. and I can't do a whole lot

  625. for this fellow's needs

  626. right now

  627. so why am I doing it

  628. and God said,

  629. hey,

  630. you're on to something.

  631. And it don't have to happen

  632. in a pastor study.

  633. It can happen

  634. in a restaurant.

  635. It can happen

  636. in a grocery store.

  637. It can happen

  638. in your neighborhood.

  639. Our responsibility

  640. is to not try

  641. to figure out

  642. who needs the gospel

  643. but to assume

  644. all need the gospel.

  645. Share it

  646. and allow them

  647. to respond

  648. and it's God's

  649. responsibility

  650. to save.

  651. But I want you

  652. to know

  653. fresh out the gate

  654. everyone does

  655. not welcome Jesus.

  656. They do not.

  657. Third thing is this.

  658. Anyone who does

  659. not accept Jesus

  660. is ruined.

  661. They're ruined.

  662. I'd love to be able

  663. to tell you

  664. about God

  665. who looks past

  666. all your sins

  667. and wrongs

  668. and mistakes

  669. and will save you

  670. from the doom

  671. that a sinful humanity

  672. must face.

  673. but I can't tell you

  674. that because

  675. there's a mistake

  676. that too many make

  677. that God does not

  678. that people make

  679. about God's forgiveness.

  680. When you refuse

  681. to accept Christ

  682. into your life

  683. you refuse

  684. to acknowledge

  685. the weight

  686. of all of your sin

  687. and you refuse

  688. the greatest gift

  689. that could ever

  690. be given

  691. to you.

  692. And when you refuse

  693. the Lord Jesus

  694. and do not respond

  695. to him

  696. in obedience

  697. you will face

  698. an eternal hell.

  699. That ain't nice

  700. to say right here

  701. before Christmas.

  702. We're supposed

  703. to be coming off

  704. of Thanksgiving

  705. and being cheery

  706. and nice.

  707. But I want

  708. to be certain

  709. and I want

  710. to be clear

  711. this morning

  712. Christ didn't

  713. hold back.

  714. it's just

  715. as true today

  716. as it was

  717. when he said it.

  718. I want you

  719. to listen

  720. to how Christ

  721. describes it

  722. in verses 17

  723. and 18

  724. of that same passage.

  725. He says this

  726. but he looked

  727. I love this

  728. he looked

  729. directly at them

  730. he wanted them

  731. to get it

  732. and said

  733. what then

  734. is this

  735. that is written

  736. the stone

  737. that the builders

  738. rejected

  739. has become

  740. the cornerstone

  741. everyone who

  742. falls on that

  743. stone

  744. will be broken

  745. to pieces

  746. and when it

  747. falls on anyone

  748. it will crush him.

  749. Now that's a quote

  750. from Isaiah 5

  751. followed by

  752. a reference

  753. to Daniel chapter 2

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  754. and those

  755. listening

  756. would be a lot

  757. more familiar

  758. with those two passages

  759. than most of us

  760. are

  761. because they knew

  762. those very well.

  763. They would be

  764. familiar with both

  765. of them.

  766. The cornerstone

  767. is the first stone

  768. that was laid

  769. and when that

  770. cornerstone

  771. was laid

  772. everything else

  773. came off

  774. the edge

  775. the angles

  776. as well as

  777. the rest of the

  778. foundation

  779. came off

  780. of that

  781. cornerstone.

  782. You had to

  783. get that right.

  784. I was in a

  785. building program

  786. one time

  787. and they built

  788. the trenches

  789. for the foundation

  790. and I went

  791. and looked at it

  792. it was a

  793. rectangular building

  794. I went and looked

  795. at it

  796. I said

  797. something's wrong

  798. I said

  799. where's this door

  800. and they showed

  801. me

  802. they had dug

  803. the foundations

  804. in a wrong way

  805. was that 90 degrees

  806. it was wrong

  807. I said

  808. you gotta turn

  809. this building

  810. before you build it

  811. you gotta turn

  812. the building

  813. they hadn't

  814. got the

  815. foundation

  816. right

  817. the whole

  818. thing would

  819. have been

  820. off

  821. my friend

  822. you gotta

  823. get the

  824. cornerstone

  825. right

  826. that's what

  827. he's talking

  828. about

  829. you gotta

  830. get that

  831. angle

  832. correct

  833. to start

  834. with

  835. Christ

  836. is the

  837. cornerstone

  838. in which

  839. we build

  840. our life

  841. on

  842. he's the

  843. cornerstone

  844. that the

  845. church is

  846. built on

  847. and the

  848. word also

  849. can be

  850. translated

  851. capstone

  852. which is

  853. the last

  854. one that

  855. goes in

  856. place

  857. this word

  858. is so

  859. appropriate

  860. here

  861. scripture

  862. tells us

  863. that

  864. Solomon's

  865. temple

  866. had

  867. 80,000

  868. stonemasons

  869. working on

  870. it

  871. and that

  872. the stones

  873. were pre-cut

  874. at a quarry

  875. and delivered

  876. to the site

  877. first kings

  878. tells us

  879. that there

  880. was not a

  881. sound of

  882. an iron

  883. tool to

  884. be made

  885. on the

  886. holy place

  887. at all

  888. they did

  889. not want

  890. to hear

  891. them

  892. working

  893. so quietly

  894. they constructed

  895. that temple

  896. get this

  897. for seven

  898. years

  899. they worked

  900. like that

  901. and there's

  902. a rabbinical

  903. story

  904. that goes

  905. back to

  906. the building

  907. of the

  908. temple

  909. that one

  910. day a

  911. large

  912. odd

  913. shaped

  914. stone

  915. arrived

  916. and they

  917. thought it

  918. was a

  919. botched

  920. stone

  921. so they

  922. laid that

  923. stone

  924. aside

  925. and they

  926. continued to

  927. build

  928. and as the

  929. building progressed

  930. that stone

  931. got in the way

  932. and so they

  933. moved that

  934. stone

  935. and as they

  936. continued to

  937. build

  938. that odd

  939. shaped stone

  940. was still in the

  941. way and so

  942. people were

  943. stumbling over it

  944. and so they

  945. moved that

  946. stone

  947. again

  948. and set it

  949. over by itself

  950. and let it

  951. sit there

  952. and toward

  953. the end

  954. of the

  955. work

  956. the

  957. scaffolding

  958. was set up

  959. and they

  960. were waiting

  961. for the

  962. capstone

  963. to be placed

  964. in the main

  965. arch of the

  966. temple

  967. they began

  968. to look

  969. and to look

  970. for that

  971. piece

  972. and noticed

  973. that the

  974. quarry had

  975. not brought

  976. the piece

  977. that they

  978. needed

  979. for that

  980. so they

  981. told them

  982. they asked

  983. the quarry

  984. the quarry

  985. said we

  986. sent it

  987. a long

  988. time ago

  989. they looked

  990. harder

  991. and they

  992. hid

  993. and hid

  994. in the

  995. overgrowth

  996. of the

  997. brush

  998. and the

  999. trees

  1000. because they

  1001. had been

  1002. building for

  1003. seven years

  1004. they found

  1005. the stone

  1006. that had

  1007. been rejected

  1008. so long

  1009. ago

  1010. and it

  1011. perfectly

  1012. fit

  1013. in that

  1014. keystone

  1015. capstone

  1016. arched

  1017. way

  1018. and held

  1019. up the

  1020. weight

  1021. of the

  1022. building

  1023. because it

  1024. perfectly

  1025. fit

  1026. just like

  1027. the capstone

  1028. is the

  1029. last

  1030. and climactic

  1031. piece

  1032. that holds

  1033. it all

  1034. together

  1035. so the

  1036. Lord is

  1037. the cornerstone

  1038. our sure

  1039. foundation

  1040. is to build

  1041. our lives

  1042. on nothing

  1043. else but

  1044. Christ

  1045. and he's

  1046. also the

  1047. capstone

  1048. that is

  1049. the finale

  1050. that is

  1051. the final

  1052. piece of

  1053. the puzzle

  1054. the keystone

  1055. which all

  1056. else relies

  1057. on

  1058. Jesus Christ

  1059. is the

  1060. cornerstone

  1061. the starting

  1062. place

  1063. he's the

  1064. capstone

  1065. the end

  1066. scripture

  1067. calls him

  1068. the alpha

  1069. and the

  1070. omega

  1071. that means

  1072. the A

  1073. and the Z

  1074. he's the

  1075. author

  1076. of our

  1077. faith

  1078. he's the

  1079. finisher

  1080. of our

  1081. faith

  1082. he's what

  1083. we're made

  1084. of

  1085. the rest

  1086. of the

  1087. new

  1088. testament

  1089. assures

  1090. us

  1091. that he's

  1092. also the

  1093. foundation

  1094. of the

  1095. church

  1096. that is

  1097. to be

  1098. based

  1099. upon

  1100. the

  1101. church

  1102. is built

  1103. upon

  1104. Christ

  1105. it comes

  1106. and it

  1107. goes

  1108. with

  1109. Christ

  1110. if he's

  1111. not the

  1112. head

  1113. and before

  1114. it

  1115. I don't

  1116. want to

  1117. be a

  1118. part

  1119. of it

  1120. and the

  1121. potential

  1122. of this

  1123. church

  1124. or any

  1125. church

  1126. is not

  1127. limited

  1128. by our

  1129. inability

  1130. but instead

  1131. is enabled

  1132. by his

  1133. limitless

  1134. ability

  1135. if you were

  1136. to ask me

  1137. where First

  1138. Baptist Church

  1139. started

  1140. I could tell

  1141. you how a

  1142. group of

  1143. Baptists had a

  1144. burden for a

  1145. church in

  1146. this town

  1147. and how after

  1148. looking at

  1149. several plots

  1150. of land

  1151. they accepted

  1152. the lot that

  1153. was offered to

  1154. him by

  1155. J.M.

  1156. Stewart

  1157. I could tell

  1158. you how

  1159. 29 people

  1160. left their

  1161. churches to

  1162. become charter

  1163. members of

  1164. this church

  1165. and how on

  1166. May 16th

  1167. 1891

  1168. the Pickens

  1169. Baptist Church

  1170. was formed

  1171. with an

  1172. initial offering

  1173. of $7.42

  1174. and when I

  1175. read that I

  1176. thought Lord

  1177. let us have a

  1178. better offering

  1179. on Sunday

  1180. than that

  1181. please

  1182. $7.42

  1183. you know

  1184. what they did

  1185. with it

  1186. they sent it

  1187. to missions

  1188. I'll get to

  1189. that next

  1190. week

  1191. however if

  1192. you ask me

  1193. where the

  1194. church started

  1195. I'll point

  1196. you to

  1197. Jesus

  1198. the stone

  1199. the builders

  1200. rejected

  1201. the leader

  1202. of the

  1203. church

  1204. churches

  1205. the leaders

  1206. of the church

  1207. rejected

  1208. even killed

  1209. him

  1210. is in fact

  1211. who this

  1212. church

  1213. is built

  1214. upon

  1215. he's the

  1216. foundation

  1217. he's the

  1218. pinnacle

  1219. he's where

  1220. we begin

  1221. he's where

  1222. we end

  1223. and Colossians

  1224. tells us

  1225. he's the one

  1226. that holds

  1227. every other

  1228. part of us

  1229. together

  1230. if you ask

  1231. me what to

  1232. build your

  1233. life on

  1234. I'll tell

  1235. you Jesus

  1236. and if you

  1237. have to do

  1238. and you need

  1239. to respond

  1240. to it

  1241. because you

  1242. have to do

  1243. something

  1244. with Jesus

  1245. Jesus

  1246. said

  1247. you either

  1248. build your

  1249. life on

  1250. him

  1251. or you

  1252. stumble

  1253. over him

  1254. or you

  1255. get crushed

  1256. because of

  1257. your response

  1258. you either

  1259. build your

  1260. life upon

  1261. him or

  1262. he'll mess

  1263. you up

  1264. for all

  1265. of eternity

  1266. by rejecting

  1267. him

  1268. Jesus

  1269. is what

  1270. we build

  1271. our lives

  1272. on

  1273. and he

  1274. said that

  1275. some fall

  1276. on this

  1277. stone

  1278. and get

  1279. broken

  1280. and others

  1281. are crushed

  1282. by it

  1283. and I

  1284. will tell

  1285. you that

  1286. day the

  1287. Pharisees

  1288. didn't get

  1289. what he

  1290. was saying

  1291. they didn't

  1292. like it

  1293. it made

  1294. them mad

  1295. and they

  1296. left mad

  1297. what I'm

  1298. telling you

  1299. today

  1300. can upset

  1301. you

  1302. on my

  1303. prayer by

  1304. the Holy

  1305. Spirit of

  1306. God

  1307. that it

  1308. will convict

  1309. you

  1310. to make

  1311. sure that

  1312. we do

  1313. everything

  1314. that we

  1315. need to

  1316. do

  1317. to be

  1318. right

  1319. where

  1320. God

  1321. wants

  1322. us

  1323. to be

  1324. we

  1325. can

  1326. can

  1327. and

  1328. should

  1329. build

  1330. our

  1331. lives

  1332. on him

  1333. today

  1334. but I

  1335. want you

  1336. to be

  1337. clear

  1338. because

  1339. Christ

  1340. is

  1341. clear

  1342. and

  1343. Christ

  1344. is

  1345. certain

  1346. accept

  1347. it or

  1348. not

  1349. believe

  1350. it or

  1351. not

  1352. just

  1353. like he

  1354. looked at

  1355. them in

  1356. the eye

  1357. I look

  1358. at you

  1359. in the eye

  1360. today

  1361. with certainty

  1362. to tell

  1363. you

  1364. your hope

  1365. is found

  1366. in the

  1367. Lord Jesus

  1368. he has

  1369. planted

  1370. opportunities

  1371. in your

  1372. life

  1373. for you

  1374. to respond

  1375. including

  1376. this one

  1377. today

  1378. as he

  1379. sends

  1380. workers

  1381. to you

  1382. let him

  1383. see his

  1384. harvest

  1385. respond in

  1386. obedience

  1387. don't

  1388. be

  1389. obstinate

  1390. don't

  1391. be

  1392. possessive

  1393. understand

  1394. that

  1395. everything

  1396. you

  1397. have

  1398. and

  1399. everything

  1400. you

  1401. are

  1402. was

  1403. given

  1404. to

  1405. you

  1406. by

  1407. God

  1408. and

  1409. because

  1410. we

  1411. are

  1412. a

  1413. fallen

  1414. humanity

  1415. and

  1416. because

  1417. each

  1418. one

  1419. of

  1420. us

  1421. has

  1422. sinned

  1423. individually

  1424. we

  1425. are

  1426. separated

  1427. from

  1428. God

  1429. for

  1430. all

  1431. eternity

  1432. unless

  1433. we

  1434. repent

  1435. and

  1436. turn

  1437. our

  1438. lives

  1439. over

  1440. to

  1441. Christ

  1442. Jesus

  1443. he's

  1444. where

  1445. we

  1446. start

  1447. thank

  1448. God

  1449. he's

  1450. where

  1451. I'll

  1452. finish

  1453. and

  1454. he

  1455. ought

  1456. to

  1457. be

  1458. everything

  1459. in

  1460. between

  1461. Christ

  1462. said

  1463. excuse

  1464. me

  1465. Paul

  1466. said

  1467. for

  1468. me

  1469. to

  1470. live

  1471. is

  1472. Christ

  1473. and

  1474. to

  1475. die

  1476. is

  1477. gain

  1478. friend

  1479. today

  1480. if

  1481. you

  1482. don't

  1483. know

  1484. him

  1485. give

  1486. your

  1487. heart

  1488. and

  1489. life

  1490. to

  1491. the

  1492. Lord

  1493. Jesus

  1494. Christ

  1495. with

  1496. every

  1497. head

  1498. bowed

  1499. and

  1500. every

  1501. eye

  1502. closed

  1503. I

  1504. want

  1505. to

  1506. ask

  1507. you

  1508. this

  1509. morning

  1510. if

  1511. there's

  1512. ever

  1513. been

  1514. a

  1515. time

  1516. in

  1517. your

  1518. life

  1519. when

  1520. you've

  1521. accepted

  1522. the

  1523. Lord

  1524. Jesus

  1525. as

  1526. your

  1527. personal

  1528. Lord

  1529. and

  1530. Savior

  1531. if

  1532. there

  1533. hadn't

  1534. I

  1535. want

  1536. you

  1537. to

  1538. know

  1539. you

  1540. can

  1541. come

  1542. today

  1543. we'd

  1544. be

  1545. happy

  1546. to

  1547. guide

  1548. you

  1549. in

  1550. what

  1551. that

  1552. means

  1553. allow

  1554. God

  1555. to

  1556. work

  1557. and

  1558. move

  1559. in

  1560. your

  1561. life

  1562. as

  1563. only

  1564. he

  1565. can

  1566. maybe

  1567. maybe

  1568. you're

  1569. here

  1570. this

  1571. morning

  1572. and

  1573. you

  1574. know

  1575. that

  1576. that

  1577. has

  1578. happened

  1579. to

  1580. you

  1581. but

  1582. in

  1583. reality

  1584. you've

  1585. never

  1586. acknowledged

  1587. that

  1588. publicly

  1589. never

  1590. told

  1591. anybody

  1592. about

  1593. that

  1594. Jesus

  1595. by

  1596. his

  1597. example

  1598. and

  1599. by

  1600. his

  1601. command

  1602. has

  1603. told

  1604. us

  1605. to

  1606. make

  1607. that

  1608. public

  1609. through

  1610. baptism

  1611. and

  1612. I

  1613. encourage

  1614. you

  1615. to

  1616. simply

  1617. be

  1618. obedient

  1619. to

  1620. God

  1621. today

  1622. respond

  1623. to

  1624. him

  1625. if

  1626. you've

  1627. never

  1628. publicly

  1629. acknowledged

  1630. a

  1631. personal

  1632. faith

  1633. that

  1634. you

  1635. have

  1636. already

  1637. committed

  1638. to

  1639. we'd

  1640. love

  1641. to

  1642. guide

  1643. you

  1644. in

  1645. the

  1646. process

  1647. of

  1648. making

  1649. that

  1650. publicly

  1651. known

  1652. as

  1653. the

  1654. Bible

  1655. proclaims

  1656. for

  1657. us

  1658. to

  1659. do

  1660. maybe

  1661. you're

  1662. visiting

  1663. with us

  1664. today

  1665. and

  1666. God's

  1667. leading

  1668. you

  1669. to be

  1670. a part

  1671. of

  1672. this

  1673. church

  1674. I

  1675. just

  1676. ask

  1677. you

  1678. to

  1679. do

  1680. what

  1681. God

  1682. tells

  1683. you

  1684. to

  1685. do

  1686. we'd

  1687. happily

  1688. guide

  1689. you

  1690. in

  1691. that

  1692. process

  1693. or

  1694. maybe

  1695. you

  1696. just

  1697. need

  1698. to

  1699. get

  1700. your

  1701. heart

  1702. right

  1703. maybe

  1704. you

  1705. just

  1706. need

  1707. to

  1708. share

  1709. with

  1710. somebody

  1711. that

  1712. God

  1713. has

  1714. put

  1715. in

  1716. your

  1717. path

  1718. it's

  1719. been

  1720. my

  1721. prayer

  1722. that

  1723. the

  1724. Holy

  1725. Spirit

  1726. may

  1727. point

  1728. out

  1729. to

  1730. you

  1731. this

  1732. morning

  1733. somebody

  1734. that

  1735. he's

  1736. put

  1737. right

  1738. before

  1739. you

  1740. that

  1741. you

  1742. haven't

  1743. bothered

  1744. to

  1745. share

  1746. with

  1747. or

  1748. it

  1749. may

  1750. be

  1751. somebody

  1752. unbeknownst

  1753. to

  1754. you

  1755. like

  1756. I

  1757. experienced

  1758. last

  1759. week

  1760. just

  1761. walk

  1762. in

  1763. from

  1764. nowhere

  1765. and

  1766. begin

  1767. a

  1768. conversation

  1769. that

  1770. can

  1771. lead

  1772. to

  1773. a

  1774. gospel

  1775. conversation

  1776. I

  1777. don't

  1778. know

  1779. how

  1780. God

  1781. is

  1782. speaking

  1783. to

  1784. you

  1785. this

  1786. morning

  1787. but

  1788. I

  1789. know

  1790. you'll

  1791. never

  1792. be

  1793. satisfied

  1794. until

  1795. you

  1796. follow

  1797. him

  1798. and

  1799. I

  1800. know

  1801. he

  1802. has

  1803. a

  1804. way

  1805. based

  1806. on

  1807. the

  1808. story

  1809. that

  1810. Jesus

  1811. shares

  1812. to

  1813. bring

  1814. workers

  1815. in

  1816. our

  1817. path

  1818. to

  1819. give

  1820. us

  1821. opportunities

  1822. to

  1823. respond

  1824. in

  1825. obedience

  1826. it's

  1827. been

  1828. my

  1829. prayer

  1830. this

  1831. week

  1832. this

  1833. morning

  1834. and

  1835. even

  1836. this

  1837. moment

  1838. that

  1839. you'll

  1840. do

  1841. just

  1842. that

  1843. Lord

  1844. Jesus

  1845. I

  1846. love

  1847. you

  1848. and

  1849. I

  1850. thank

  1851. you

  1852. for

  1853. being

  1854. obedient

  1855. right

  1856. now

  1857. to

  1858. trust

  1859. you

  1860. Father

  1861. in

  1862. Jesus

  1863. name

  1864. Amen

  1865. stand
