  1. When I was living in Mississippi, I came back to Pickens for a few days to help bury a dear friend.

  2. I know he was a friend of many of you as well.

  3. Oliver Neely was a strong example in this community and changed a lot of people's lives due to his influence for the gospel.

  4. And one day I went on a ride to go to Old Stomping Ground, a little ride of nostalgia,

  5. because my grandfather built a cabin a long time ago on the banks of the South Saluda River.

  6. And when I was growing up, we used to go to that cabin in the back of that wagon on the other side of that cabin.

  7. Much has changed since that place was sold after his death, but I was pleased to see the cabin was still standing.

  8. That chimney is still there, and the rafters that he put, they've improved the home.

  9. Quite a bit has changed now.

  10. For one, they have indoor plumbing now.

  11. That's it from another angle now.

  12. When I was growing up and we went up there, we were kind of highfalutin.

  13. We had a two-seater.

  14. And you can always go to the bathroom with a friend, I guess.

  15. But anyway, and I know what it is to sweep before you go, if you know what I mean.

  16. If you don't know what I mean, good for you.

  17. But even with all that, if you look behind that, you'll see the devastation that a tornado, I believe, in April 2020 caused in that area.

  18. It was still pretty special.

  19. I go back there sometimes and reflect upon what God gave us so many years ago.

  20. Now, whether it's a literal spot or just a spot in your mind, we all need to go back like that spiritually

  21. and reflect on the times God did a work in us or when we had a special time with the Lord.

  22. Abraham did that.

  23. And I want you to see what we need to do based on his example and some other biblical examples in the midst of our journey.

  24. Genesis chapter 12, beginning in verse 4, it says,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  25. So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him.

  26. Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran.

  27. And Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son and all their possessions they had gathered

  28. and the people they had acquired in Haran.

  29. And they set out to go to the land of Canaan.

  30. When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to a place at Shechem,

  31. to the oak of Moreh.

  32. At that time, the Canaanites were in the land.

  33. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said,

  34. To your offspring, I'll give this land.

  35. So he built there an altar to the Lord who had appeared to him.

  36. From there he moved to the hill country of the east of Bethel

  37. and pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east.

  38. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord.

  39. And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negev.

  40. God told Abram to go.

  41. And when he did go, God would show him where he was to go, what he was to do, and would work through him.

  42. And we talked about in detail last week how he took a pit stop for too long in Haran.

  43. But then he set out with his family, and verse 5 tells us,

  44. the people that they had acquired in Haran.

  45. In other words, those that he had led out of moon god worship

  46. and into the worship of the Heavenly Father.

  47. He stopped at the Oak of Moreh.

  48. That's a popular spot in that day.

  49. It is known particularly for the Canaanite shrines

  50. and the lessons of the false religions that were taught in that area.

  51. Abram stopped there, shared some of what God was showing him

  52. and where God was taking him,

  53. and then after sharing that with them,

  54. brought those people along with him.

  55. along on his journey.

  56. God's not only giving him the land,

  57. but he is making him a blessing as he goes,

  58. just as God promised that he would do.

  59. And Abram is changing the land in which he journeys through.

  60. Due to the promises of God, Abram hung around,

  61. but the Canaanites had the good land in that area.

  62. Therefore, he moved on and journeyed through the Negev.

  63. The Negev is a barren desert land.

  64. It is hard traveling.

  65. But I want you to notice what Abram learned in Haran,

  66. the land of plenty,

  67. at least in worldly thought.

  68. But in reality, just like the meaning of the word,

  69. it was a spiritually parched area.

  70. He learned there that the promises of this world is not worth the focus.

  71. Don't focus on what this world has.

  72. Focus instead upon what God has.

  73. And when he realized what God had for him,

  74. his obedience went from a partial obedience

  75. of staying in some places too long

  76. and taking too many people with him

  77. to a partial obedience,

  78. to a full obedience,

  79. or just pure obedience.

  80. Not only is Abram now on the move,

  81. but God was also on the move.

  82. And notice what we do,

  83. just like he did,

  84. when God is on the move.

  85. When God moves in your life,

  86. first we need to recognize.

  87. We need to recognize the movement of God.

  88. Sometimes we miss the movement of God

  89. because we just don't recognize it.

  90. We're not spiritually alert to know what's going on.

  91. We're not receptive to it.

  92. We're not obedient to it.

  93. The best way to recognize those things

  94. is to get in on it.

  95. Take God at his word.

  96. Listen to what the spirit of God speaks to you

  97. about the personal application

  98. of God's word in your life.

  99. Respond to it in obedience.

  100. Respond when he speaks.

  101. And we have a lot of hindrances along the way

  102. because we sometimes don't recognize

  103. when God speaks to us

  104. and what he would have for us.

  105. We see what others need to have in their life.

  106. We see what changes need to take place

  107. in other people's lives,

  108. but we fail to acknowledge our own spiritual woes.

  109. We fail to acknowledge what God wants to say to us

  110. and we don't listen

  111. when his leading invades our life.

  112. Or we go to Heron and stop.

  113. We go halfway.

  114. We start on a trek,

  115. but we just half obey.

  116. Old boy told me not long ago,

  117. you know, I believe in God and all that,

  118. but I don't think we need to get so wound up about it.

  119. Well, I think we need to get wound up about it.

  120. I do.

  121. I do.

  122. I think he's worthy of us getting a little wound up.

  123. He got wound up enough,

  124. thank God, to go to the cross for us.

  125. Amen?

  126. And so we ought to get wound up for him.

  127. It could be because God seems to be speaking

  128. sometimes too much to us.

  129. What God says sometimes,

  130. he digs into the closets of our lives.

  131. He deals with stuff in our lives

  132. that we don't want to touch

  133. and we don't want to deal with.

  134. Abram was in the land of the Canaanites,

  135. in a place of the shrines,

  136. in the place of pagan worship,

  137. and God says,

  138. your children and your children's children

  139. will inherit this land.

  140. Abram could have easily said,

  141. how in the world is that going to happen?

  142. I mean, do you see who's here?

  143. And they're pretty mighty.

  144. I mean, how's that going to take place?

  145. There's strong people here.

  146. Or he could have said,

  147. what do you mean my children

  148. and my children's children?

  149. What about me?

  150. What about me?

  151. What's in it for me?

  152. Because I want you to notice

  153. that God was saying,

  154. not saying that Abram would get the land.

  155. He said his offspring would get the land.

  156. Recognize that God speaks

  157. and pay attention to what he says

  158. because when God's on the move,

  159. there's something else we need to do.

  160. We need to recognize it,

  161. but that's not it.

  162. We also need to remember.

  163. We need to remember it.

  164. When God speaks truth to us,

  165. I'm talking about personalized,

  166. customized truth to us

  167. by the Holy Spirit of God.

  168. It is special,

  169. and you need to archive it.

  170. You need to hold on to it.

  171. Notice what happens

  172. as Abram is on the way

  173. to the Lord's promises, okay?

  174. He's on his way

  175. to where God would tell him to go,

  176. and the Lord speaks to him,

  177. and he recognizes the presence of God,

  178. and when he recognizes the presence of God,

  179. he builds an altar there

  180. as a testimony

  181. to what God said

  182. when he claimed that land.

  183. Now, he left that land,

  184. but he didn't take that altar with him.

  185. He left that altar there.

  186. He left it behind,

  187. and when he moved again,

  188. and he called on the Lord again,

  189. he had a powerful time with the Lord.

  190. He built another altar.

  191. He didn't take that altar with him either.

  192. He left it behind.

  193. So I want you to think about this,

  194. what happens.

  195. After Abram's gone from the area,

  196. and people come back to that,

  197. when those Canaanites come back

  198. to the Oak of Moreh

  199. to worship their foreign gods,

  200. they just see an altar there

  201. to Abraham's God.

  202. They see an altar there,

  203. recognizing that he left his testimony there.

  204. This is where God spoke to me.

  205. He left a witness there.

  206. He does the same thing

  207. when he goes to Bethel,

  208. and Beth in Hebrew is house,

  209. and El is short for God.

  210. House of God's what it means.

  211. Abraham had a good day

  212. in the house of God,

  213. and he didn't forget it.

  214. He left his testimony behind

  215. along with that altar.

  216. He remembered what God did for him.

  217. That reminds me of a passage

  218. in 1 Chronicles 21

  219. when David was tempted

  220. to get prideful about all he had.

  221. God had blessed him mightily,

  222. and so he started counting.

  223. He wanted to see how much he had,

  224. so he took a census.

  225. Scripture says he was tempted

  226. by Satan to take that census,

  227. and so he took an inventory.

  228. And when he tried to count up

  229. all his strength,

  230. he got filled up with pride

  231. of his accomplishments,

  232. and the cost of that sin

  233. came upon his people,

  234. and his guilt overwhelmed him

  235. because of the cost

  236. his people had to pay

  237. because of his sin,

  238. and so he looked for a flat,

  239. clear place to build an altar.

  240. There's no better flat,

  241. clear place in that day

  242. to build an altar

  243. than the threshing floor.

  244. He found a threshing floor.

  245. The threshing floor

  246. is a crucial part

  247. of the harvest of wheat.

  248. It was a raised area

  249. that was floored with rock

  250. or a hard surface,

  251. hard-packed dirt surface.

  252. It was on a threshing floor

  253. where they would pound out the wheat,

  254. and they would loosen it up

  255. and separate the chaff

  256. or the holes from the good wheat.

  257. And in the same way,

  258. David cleaned out that spot

  259. on that threshing floor,

  260. and it was on that threshing floor

  261. that David built an altar,

  262. and he laid it out

  263. before the Lord.

  264. It's appropriate

  265. that it was on a threshing floor

  266. because there he threshed it out.

  267. He shook out the worthless

  268. in his life,

  269. and he let the good in his life

  270. shine through right there

  271. before the Lord.

  272. It was there that God came to him.

  273. It was there that the fire

  274. fell upon him,

  275. and it was there

  276. in that very spot

  277. that God told him

  278. the promised temple of the Lord

  279. was to be built.

  280. And when they went back to build it,

  281. he bought the land

  282. to put it right where God spoke.

  283. He found out that day

  284. that he laid it out before the Lord,

  285. and he realized

  286. how desperate he was

  287. and how much he needed God.

  288. He recognized

  289. that God had spoken,

  290. and he remembered

  291. that God had moved.

  292. After Moses died,

  293. Joshua was to be

  294. the one to finally bring

  295. the people to the promised land.

  296. All that time in that desert,

  297. and Moses was not the one

  298. to carry him over.

  299. And when they got to the Jordan

  300. and they stepped into the river,

  301. the water stopped flowing

  302. and were cut off from the area,

  303. and they all passed on dry land,

  304. even though it was flood season,

  305. and the river would be swelling.

  306. And after they got through that river,

  307. Joshua instructed them,

  308. as God had told him,

  309. to take a stone,

  310. one representing each of the 12 tribes,

  311. which made up all of the people

  312. that came across,

  313. and exactly where the Ark of the Covenant,

  314. which represented the presence of God,

  315. had crossed,

  316. they were to set up 12 stones

  317. of remembrance

  318. on the banks of that river.

  319. And Scripture says that

  320. when you bring your children

  321. back through here,

  322. and tell them about

  323. how we crossed over the Jordan,

  324. and they see those

  325. rough-hewn stones

  326. erect out of the ground,

  327. and they ask you,

  328. what do these stones mean?

  329. You tell them.

  330. Tell them how God parted the waters.

  331. Tell them how He moved you

  332. to the other side.

  333. Tell them how He paved the way

  334. to claim your promises.

  335. Parents, listen to me today.

  336. Tell them how He brought you through.

  337. I had a memory pop up.

  338. It's on my phone.

  339. It's in my calendar.

  340. I know when it is.

  341. I had a memory pop up this week

  342. from eight years ago.

  343. And I want you to see a video

  344. for just a moment.

  345. Just entertain me.

  346. I opened it up.

  347. It was addressing me.

  348. I opened it up.

  349. And it said,

  350. I know I'm a sinner.

  351. And I know that Jesus died

  352. for my sins.

  353. I know that He rose again.

  354. I know that He's coming back.

  355. And I want Him to save me.

  356. Can we pray now?

  357. She went to sleep

  358. before she could give it to me

  359. last night.

  360. So when she woke up,

  361. me and her had talked.

  362. And then we got the family

  363. in the room together.

  364. And she prayed that

  365. Jesus in her life.

  366. Yeah.

  367. Thank you.

  368. Thank you.

  369. I'm going to tell you,

  370. can you sleep last night?

  371. I'm going to tell you

  372. hearing her comments

  373. this morning,

  374. having given her heart

  375. and life to the Lord

  376. Jesus Christ,

  377. knowing what she did.

  378. As a matter of fact,

  379. when I let Abby read

  380. the letter,

  381. I said,

  382. well,

  383. you can't put in much

  384. wine in her mouth.

  385. It's true.

  386. She wants to join our church

  387. on that profession

  388. and my baptism.

  389. If you're happy,

  390. she's coming.

  391. Say amen.

  392. Amen.

  393. That is a precious,

  394. memorial stone

  395. in my life.

  396. I've marked it down.

  397. When Samuel was leading Israel,

  398. the Philistines were bearing down

  399. upon him.

  400. And the people

  401. grew very afraid.

  402. They knew the ruthlessness

  403. of the Philistines.

  404. They were intense battlers.

  405. And they called out to the Lord

  406. and they fasted and prayed

  407. and called out to the Lord.

  408. And in 1 Samuel,

    1 Samuel 7:10

  409. chapter 7,

  410. verse 10,

  411. it says,

  412. the Lord

  413. thundered

  414. with a mighty sound

  415. that day

  416. against the Philistines

  417. and threw them

  418. into confusion

  419. and they were defeated

  420. before Israel.

  421. And when they won

  422. that battle,

  423. Samuel took a stone.

  424. He called it

  425. an Ebenezer,

  426. which is Hebrew

  427. for a stone

  428. of help.

  429. And he said,

  430. till now,

  431. the Lord

  432. has helped us.

  433. In other words,

  434. when I look back

  435. at how we got

  436. where we are,

  437. the Lord

  438. has guided us.

  439. He's helped us.

  440. He recognized

  441. that God

  442. had done the work

  443. and then he

  444. remembered it

  445. and laid it down.

  446. And I'm telling you,

  447. when God moves,

  448. mark it down.

  449. And then in the days

  450. afterwards,

  451. after the move

  452. of God,

  453. we reflect.

  454. He said to Abram,

  455. to your offspring,

  456. I will give

  457. this land.

  458. Abram was trusting God.

  459. He was following God.

  460. He was obeying God

  461. for bigger reasons

  462. than himself.

  463. We're going to talk

  464. about the steps

  465. of faith along the way

  466. as we carve

  467. through his life,

  468. but this may be

  469. why he is remembered

  470. in Scripture the most.

  471. because he was not

  472. doing this

  473. for himself.

  474. Abram was not

  475. going to get the land.

  476. He was going to start

  477. on a road

  478. to better influence

  479. later generations.

  480. And it is my burden,

  481. folks,

  482. to instill

  483. within my children

  484. not only a love

  485. for the Lord

  486. so that I can rest

  487. in that,

  488. but also

  489. that they can share

  490. with their children

  491. and that they can share

  492. with their grandchildren.

  493. Abraham died

  494. in a cave

  495. and he was buried,

  496. Abraham died

  497. and with only the cave

  498. he was buried in,

  499. but what he left

  500. was so much more.

  501. And it's ironic

  502. that some folks

  503. work so hard

  504. to have so much here

  505. to leave

  506. to the next generation

  507. generation

  508. that they get

  509. so busy

  510. to actually

  511. leave

  512. what actually

  513. counts

  514. for all eternity.

  515. Hebrews 11,

  516. 9 and 10

  517. says this,

  518. by faith he went

  519. to live

  520. in the land

  521. of promise

  522. as in a foreign land

  523. living in the tents

  524. with Isaac and Jacob,

  525. heirs with him

  526. of the same promise

  527. for thank God

  528. he was looking forward

  529. to the city

  530. that has foundations

  531. whose designer

  532. and builder

  533. is God.

  534. He had a bigger plan.

  535. Abraham left a legacy

  536. because he wasn't

  537. concerned about himself.

  538. He was concerned

  539. about obeying God,

  540. honoring God,

  541. preparing the next generation.

  542. And I want to be

  543. very clear church,

  544. we need to be concerned

  545. about the very same thing,

  546. preparing the next generation.

  547. How do we do that?

  548. Not by building cabins

  549. on the river.

  550. I mean I wish

  551. I could have kept it.

  552. When I went back,

  553. that day when I went

  554. and visited that cabin,

  555. that man wasn't there,

  556. I knocked on his door.

  557. I took some family back

  558. at spring break

  559. in March of that year

  560. and we knocked on the door

  561. and he answered.

  562. And he said,

  563. come in,

  564. I want to show you.

  565. And when I looked up

  566. and looked at the ceiling

  567. in that house,

  568. those rafters

  569. that were up there

  570. were the same rafters

  571. my grandpa had put up there.

  572. A lot of other things

  573. wasn't recognizable.

  574. Didn't have to prime

  575. that pump

  576. to get that kitchen sink

  577. going anymore.

  578. but I saw

  579. what he had done

  580. and that's special

  581. but that's not

  582. what I'm talking about.

  583. I'm talking about

  584. leaving some smoking altars

  585. and leaving some standing stones.

  586. I'm talking about

  587. speaking of how God moved,

  588. laying down a spiritual marker

  589. and then going back

  590. and reflecting on that.

  591. Not only will that strengthen you

  592. in the times of trouble

  593. that's coming

  594. because we all got more coming

  595. but it'll also strengthen

  596. those before you.

  597. my grandfather,

  598. the one that built that cabin

  599. often shared with me

  600. the stories of the blessings

  601. of the Lord.

  602. I remember the exuberance

  603. that he shared

  604. when he shared Christ

  605. with somebody.

  606. He sold tools

  607. for somebody else

  608. at Anderson Jockey Lot.

  609. Anytime we went

  610. to Anderson Jockey Lot

  611. and saw him

  612. he'd always be

  613. with a hammer in hand

  614. or a screwdriver in hand

  615. he'd be sharing his faith

  616. with somebody

  617. who was walking

  618. through that area.

  619. He shared stories

  620. of the blessings of God

  621. and how the Lord

  622. had watched over him

  623. and I don't remember

  624. those stories.

  625. Man, I wish I did.

  626. Wish I could hear his voice.

  627. We were in the military

  628. and moved around

  629. and so some of the communication

  630. that family had

  631. was reel to reel

  632. audio

  633. and they'd mail

  634. and you could hear

  635. each other talk

  636. and I asked mom

  637. what happened to that?

  638. They're gone.

  639. I don't remember

  640. those stories.

  641. I wish I did

  642. but you know

  643. what I remember?

  644. I remember that man

  645. giving God praise.

  646. I remember the times

  647. and the places

  648. that I saw him

  649. praise the Lord.

  650. I remember him

  651. testifying to God's goodness.

  652. I remember him

  653. leaving spiritual markers

  654. for me to go back to.

  655. What gives me hope

  656. for tomorrow?

  657. What gives me hope

  658. for tomorrow

  659. is the same God

  660. that brought me

  661. through the dilemmas

  662. of yesterday.

  663. The same God

  664. that's guiding me

  665. through the obstacles

  666. of today

  667. is the same God

  668. that's already

  669. in my tomorrows.

  670. He's the same God

  671. that's already laid

  672. my path.

  673. He's the same God

  674. that's already

  675. straightened my path

  676. and leveled my path

  677. and lit the path

  678. I walked.

  679. And I'm going

  680. to make a point

  681. for the rest

  682. of my days

  683. to tell the younger

  684. generations

  685. about the God

  686. that came to me

  687. and that changed me

  688. and that meets me

  689. every morning

  690. and is already

  691. in my tomorrows.

  692. and church

  693. I'm just asking you

  694. will you make

  695. the greatest investment

  696. that you could ever

  697. make

  698. in anything

  699. will you just join me

  700. because I think

  701. there need to be

  702. some altars

  703. that are left smoking

  704. and some stones

  705. that are left set

  706. for us all

  707. to be encouraged

  708. and for the next

  709. generations

  710. to be encouraged

  711. by how God

  712. has walked before us

  713. and taken care

  714. of us.

  715. We serve a great

  716. God don't we?

  717. Let's don't keep

  718. it to ourselves.

  719. Let's share it

  720. with others.

  721. With every head bow

  722. and every eye closed

  723. what are you doing

  724. with what God's

  725. given you?

  726. For one

  727. he's given you

  728. an opportunity

  729. today

  730. to surrender

  731. your life

  732. to the Lord

  733. Jesus Christ

  734. and if you've

  735. never done that

  736. I want you to know

  737. the greatest decision

  738. you'll ever make

  739. in your life

  740. is to give your

  741. heart and life

  742. to the Lord

  743. Jesus Christ.

  744. You just need

  745. to confess

  746. your need of him

  747. the sin

  748. that so separates

  749. you from him

  750. and ask him

  751. to cleanse you

  752. and to change you

  753. and I thank God

  754. he'll save you

  755. today.

  756. Today's the day

  757. of salvation.

  758. He's the same

  759. yesterday,

  760. today and forever.

  761. You can rest in that.

  762. You come down

  763. this aisle

  764. and we begin to sing

  765. and I promise you

  766. we'll lead you

  767. in how to have

  768. a relationship

  769. with Christ.

  770. Maybe you have

  771. done that

  772. but your life

  773. your life's not

  774. marked by the

  775. right stones.

  776. There's things

  777. in your life

  778. that are missing.

  779. First step

  780. of obedience

  781. after giving your

  782. heart and life

  783. to the Lord Jesus

  784. is to follow him

  785. through public

  786. confession

  787. by baptism.

  788. There may be

  789. folks here today

  790. who've never

  791. done that.

  792. There's a hindrance

  793. in your life

  794. spiritually

  795. because you've

  796. not followed

  797. through with that

  798. as God's

  799. instructed

  800. and I want

  801. to encourage

  802. you to just

  803. be obedient

  804. to that.

  805. Follow him

  806. in that.

  807. Trust him.

  808. Maybe God's

  809. leading you

  810. to be a part

  811. of this church.

  812. God's blessed

  813. us.

  814. 2022 was a

  815. wonderful year

  816. in the life

  817. of this church

  818. and God's

  819. blessed us

  820. in many ways

  821. and I'm

  822. thankful for that

  823. and I know

  824. that God's

  825. speaking and

  826. leading others

  827. as well

  828. and so if

  829. God's leading

  830. you I encourage

  831. you to come

  832. just be obedient

  833. to follow God.

  834. We'd love to

  835. have you

  836. and explain

  837. whatever we

  838. need to explain

  839. to you

  840. and help you

  841. along the way.

  842. First step

  843. is just to let

  844. us know.

  845. But most

  846. particularly

  847. today

  848. Christian

  849. what are you

  850. doing

  851. to mark

  852. your path

  853. for the Lord

  854. Jesus Christ?

  855. How are you

  856. doing that?

  857. For yourself

  858. and for others

  859. as well.

  860. let's leave

  861. some altar

  862. smoking

  863. because we

  864. we made a

  865. point to talk

  866. about what

  867. God did

  868. in our

  869. presence.

  870. Let's leave

  871. some memorial

  872. markers in

  873. our lives

  874. so folks

  875. know

  876. so we can

  877. be reminded

  878. because we

  879. need that

  880. reminder

  881. what God's

  882. done in our

  883. lives.

  884. I don't know

  885. how God's

  886. speaking to you

  887. today but I

  888. encourage you

  889. to commit your

  890. life to him

  891. completely

  892. wholeheartedly

  893. trust him

  894. he's worthy

  895. of it.

  896. Lord Jesus

  897. I love you

  898. and thank you

  899. dear God

  900. for the

  901. opportunity

  902. you give us

  903. today.

  904. Lead us

  905. right now

  906. I pray

  907. in Jesus

  908. name.

  909. Amen.
