  1. Mark chapter 14.

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  2. Mark chapter 14, our passage today

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  3. describes one of my favorite places on earth.

  4. I got to visit in 2012 and one day soon

  5. I hope to take my wife and go back.

  6. It is the Garden of Gethsemane.

  7. This passage is also some of the weightiest of all scripture.

  8. Jesus had spent time with his disciples

  9. teaching them how to live

  10. and how to live on for him after he died.

  11. Those teachings are recorded in John chapter 13 through 17

    John 13 chapter mention

  12. that we looked at last week.

  13. When they left that room, they went to the Mount of Olives,

  14. a grove of olive trees to pray.

  15. And in the center of that grove on the Mount of Olives,

  16. just across the Kindred Valley from the Temple Mount,

  17. is a garden that is surrounding an oil press.

  18. It is called the Garden of Gethsemane.

  19. Gethsemane meaning oil press.

  20. It's where they gathered the olives and came

  21. and pressed them into oil.

  22. Jesus and his disciples had just spent precious time

  23. in the upper room.

  24. They left the upper room and they traveled

  25. about three-fourths of a mile

  26. to the garden for a time of prayer.

  27. It is a special place.

  28. And I want you to understand why this morning.

  29. It's found in Mark chapter 14, beginning in verse 32,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  30. and it says this.

  31. They went to a place called Gethsemane,

  32. and he said to his disciples,

  33. sit here while I pray.

  34. And he took with him Peter and James and John

  35. and began to be greatly distressed and troubled.

  36. And he said to them,

  37. my soul is very sorrowful even to death.

  38. Remain here and watch.

  39. And going a little farther,

  40. he fell on the ground and prayed that if it were possible,

  41. the hour might pass from him.

  42. And he said, Abba Father,

  43. all things are possible for you.

  44. Remove this cup from me.

  45. Yet not what I will, but what you will.

  46. And he came and found them sleeping.

  47. And he said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep?

  48. Could you not watch for one hour?

  49. Watch and pray that you will not enter into temptation.

  50. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

  51. And again he went away and prayed,

  52. saying the same words.

  53. And again, he came and found them sleeping,

  54. for their eyes were very heavy,

  55. and they did not know what to answer him.

  56. And he came the third time and said to them,

  57. are you still sleeping and taking your rest?

  58. It is enough.

  59. The hour has come.

  60. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

  61. Rise, let us be going.

  62. See, my betrayer.

  63. The God is at hand.

  64. The events of the garden are amazing to me.

  65. I've spent years combing over this.

  66. And to summarize,

  67. I'm most amazed by three factors.

  68. All of them are very relevant to us today as well.

  69. First, I'm blown away by the suffering.

  70. Jesus suffered in the garden.

  71. Understand, he knew what was coming.

  72. John tells us that when the disciples came to arrest him,

  73. that he knew all that would happen to him.

  74. Yet even though he knew what was to happen

  75. and why they were there,

  76. he asked them,

  77. whom do you seek?

  78. Who are you looking for?

  79. Now, I want you to understand something about that question.

  80. And let me just say all the questions that God asks us.

  81. God never asks us questions because he needs the answers.

  82. He already knows.

  83. We need to deal with what the answer to his question is.

  84. He knew what was coming.

  85. And even knowing that it was not easy,

  86. there was nothing easy about the cross.

  87. And we often think about the physical aspects of that.

  88. And in a couple of weeks,

  89. we'll look at that in detail.

  90. And we think about the emotional aspect of that,

  91. the shame that went along with a man

  92. who was sinless and yet hung,

  93. like a sinner.

  94. But honestly, the spiritual part

  95. is what breaks my heart the most.

  96. The events in the garden revealed that

  97. because he said,

  98. and he said to them,

  99. my soul is very sorrowful,

  100. even to death.

  101. Luke records for us in Luke 22, verse 43,

    Luke 22:43

  102. that his sweat became like great drops of blood

  103. falling upon the ground.

  104. That actually describes a rare but well-documented malady

  105. that comes to people under tremendous stress

  106. called hematidrosis.

  107. And hematidrosis is when

  108. there's so much stress upon you

  109. that the capillaries in your face

  110. that normally would cause you to blush

  111. actually burst.

  112. And the blood runs out of the sweat pores

  113. in the face and in the head.

  114. That bursting is only due to intense stress.

  115. And through those sweat glands,

  116. the blood runs

  117. and the person actually sweats blood.

  118. It's not only rare,

  119. it is painful.

  120. And to think about what would happen

  121. in just not too long from that time

  122. when they would ram a crown of thorns

  123. upon that same head

  124. that had went through that,

  125. it was absolutely amazingly difficult.

  126. When Jesus struggled though,

  127. notice that he struggled over the cup.

  128. That's what he asked for God

  129. to somehow let him pass from.

  130. The cup.

  131. So what is the cup?

  132. The Old Testament tells us clearly.

  133. It says in Psalm 75, 6 through 8,

  134. it says this,

  135. for not from the east or from the west

  136. and not from the wilderness comes lifting up,

  137. but it is God who executes judgment,

  138. putting down one and lifting up another.

  139. For in the hand of the Lord,

  140. there is a cup with foaming wine,

  141. well mixed,

  142. and he pours out from it,

  143. and all the wicked of the earth

  144. shall drain it down to its dregs.

  145. Isaiah 51, 17 gives us a better example.

  146. It says,

  147. wake yourself,

  148. wake yourself,

  149. stand up,

  150. old Jerusalem,

  151. you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord,

  152. the cup of his wrath,

  153. who have drunk down to the dregs,

  154. the bowl,

  155. the cup of staggering.

  156. Isaiah 51,

  157. 21 and 22 celebrates the release

  158. of the wrath of God.

  159. And it says,

  160. therefore hear this,

  161. you who are afflicted,

  162. who are drunk,

  163. but not with wine.

  164. Thus says the Lord,

  165. the Lord,

  166. your God,

  167. who pleads the case of his people,

  168. behold,

  169. I am taking from your hand

  170. the cup of staggering,

  171. the bowl of my wrath,

  172. you shall drink no more.

  173. The cup that he speaks of

  174. is like a bad drink

  175. that ruins lives.

  176. Now some of you don't want to hear

  177. what I'm about to say,

  178. but I'll tell you

  179. that I don't apologize

  180. when I share the evils of alcohol.

  181. Alcohol has caused ruin

  182. for too many people.

  183. If it hasn't for you,

  184. I encourage you to stop now

  185. before it does

  186. because it is simply not worth it.

  187. A person,

  188. a city,

  189. nothing else will ever thrive

  190. because of alcohol.

  191. It may look like it does for a season,

  192. but it will not.

  193. Adrian Rogers said one time,

  194. alcohol is the most dangerous drug in America

  195. because of its acceptance,

  196. availability,

  197. and the effect that it has upon hearts

  198. and the misery that it brings.

  199. Now I'm not preaching on alcohol today,

  200. but I'll be happy to if I need to.

  201. Alcohol is what is used to describe

  202. what it's like to be under the influence

  203. of the wrath of God.

  204. It compares the wrath of God

  205. to the agony and destruction

  206. that can be caused upon somebody

  207. by lives who have been devastated

  208. by alcohol.

  209. Some of you know exactly what I'm talking about

  210. because you've seen folks struggle with it,

  211. you've seen lives destroyed by it,

  212. you've seen folks' lives taken away

  213. just simply by somebody

  214. doing something stupid

  215. under the influence of alcohol.

  216. And he uses that example,

  217. of all examples,

  218. over and over again,

  219. he uses that example

  220. of the struggle of someone

  221. who's under the wrath of God.

  222. I'll tell you the struggle for Christ,

  223. it was not the nails,

  224. it was not the thorns,

  225. it was not,

  226. he struggled over the cup

  227. of God's wrath.

  228. 2 Corinthians 5 verse 21 tells us,

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  229. for our sake he made him to be sin

  230. who knew no sin.

  231. So thank God in him

  232. we might become

  233. the righteousness of God.

  234. Don't misunderstand me.

  235. His mind was made up.

  236. Luke 9 51 tells us

  237. that he set his face toward Jerusalem.

  238. That was when he knew

  239. what he was to go to Jerusalem for.

  240. And his mind was set,

  241. his eyes were set,

  242. he knew what he was to do.

  243. But that does not make it easy.

  244. And as he prays in this garden

  245. right before he's to be arrested,

  246. he is simply saying,

  247. if there is another way,

  248. if the feeling of separation

  249. from the Father can be avoided,

  250. let it.

  251. As all of the sin of the world

  252. comes upon his back,

  253. I am grown convinced

  254. over the years

  255. that Christ in the garden

  256. expresses the greatest sense

  257. of solitude,

  258. the greatest sense of loneliness,

  259. the greatest sense of despair

  260. of anything outside the cross itself.

  261. No one could go for him.

  262. No one could even go with him.

  263. It is the greatest sense of sorrow

  264. over the separation,

  265. the greatest sense of struggle.

  266. Luke 22 verse 43 tells us

    Luke 22:43

  267. that an angel from heaven

  268. appeared to him

  269. and strengthened him.

  270. And I believe it is

  271. the greatest sense of struggle

  272. in all of humanity

  273. outside of the cross itself.

  274. There was suffering

  275. in the garden.

  276. I'll tell you what else there was.

  277. There was also the sleep.

  278. He asked them to pray

  279. and instead they fell asleep.

  280. Preoccupied by their own needs,

  281. they missed the power of the hour.

  282. Man, I'd love to point a finger at them.

  283. I really would.

  284. But the reality is

  285. if we look at our lives,

  286. we've had too many gardens

  287. of slumber in our own lives.

  288. Opportunities that we have

  289. simply slept through.

  290. While God is doing

  291. a work of redemption

  292. for our world,

  293. the church too often slumbers.

  294. We too often fail to respond

  295. to his call for us to pray,

  296. for his call for us to share,

  297. for his call for us to lead

  298. those who need him

  299. so desperately.

  300. And we know from our own experience

  301. that we are too woefully weak

  302. in spiritual matters.

  303. And so we often remain silent

  304. when we have opportunities

  305. to speak for Christ.

  306. We often tolerate unrighteousness

  307. when we ought to be

  308. standing against it.

  309. We're often timid

  310. when we ought to be bold.

  311. We often do nothing

  312. when we ought to act.

  313. We're often silent

  314. when we ought to speak up.

  315. Left to ourselves

  316. apart from the grace

  317. and power and might of God,

  318. we all lack the strength,

  319. the fortitude

  320. to stand up for Christ.

  321. And sometimes maybe

  322. even sit up for Christ.

  323. So if you are appalled

  324. at them for sleeping

  325. in the midst of this,

  326. let's also be appalled

  327. for the numerous

  328. missed opportunities

  329. that we have

  330. in our own life.

  331. The times when our tongues

  332. are too silent.

  333. The times when we are

  334. wearily nodding

  335. in our slumbering heads

  336. instead of paying attention

  337. to what God is doing

  338. in our world

  339. and in our lives.

  340. It's not only the sleep

  341. and it's not only the struggle,

  342. it's also the silence.

  343. Let me explain.

  344. I've often stumbled

  345. over Judas.

  346. I can't understand

  347. how somebody

  348. who walked with Christ himself

  349. never heeded the message.

  350. He was entrusted.

  351. He was their treasure.

  352. He was entrusted

  353. yet he bribed for Christ.

  354. The Bible says

  355. that he betrayed

  356. Jesus with a kiss.

  357. Previously setting Jesus up,

  358. he's telling the mob

  359. that Jesus would be the one

  360. that he would kiss.

  361. What a way to betray somebody.

  362. I mean the kiss in that day

  363. was a sign of respect.

  364. The kiss in that day

  365. was a sign of homage

  366. as well as affection.

  367. Slaves would kiss

  368. the feet of their master

  369. out of respect.

  370. Students would kiss

  371. the hem of the garment

  372. of their teacher.

  373. A kiss on the hand

  374. was common

  375. as a sign of respect

  376. and honor.

  377. It was common.

  378. But a kiss on the face,

  379. that was a special

  380. kind of embrace.

  381. That was only to be done

  382. among the closest of friends.

  383. And yet that's exactly

  384. how Judas identified

  385. who Jesus was

  386. for the soldiers

  387. that were to arrest him

  388. that didn't know

  389. what he looked like.

  390. And I want to point at Judas

  391. and say,

  392. shame on you!

  393. How in the world

  394. did you miss

  395. the opportunity of Christ

  396. when he walked

  397. right there before you?

  398. How did you betray him

  399. with a kiss?

  400. How in the world?

  401. But let's be honest.

  402. If we can't be honest

  403. with each other,

  404. let's at least be honest

  405. with God.

  406. How many times

  407. have we tried to embrace him

  408. while disobeying him?

  409. How many times

  410. have we made bribes

  411. with the world

  412. to be somewhat Christian

  413. but somewhat worldly?

  414. To have a little bit of this

  415. and a little bit of that.

  416. How many times

  417. have we come to worship

  418. wanting blessing

  419. while we've ignored

  420. unconfessed sin

  421. in our own life

  422. and expected God

  423. to bless us?

  424. It's a hindrance.

  425. It's a shame

  426. to sin against God.

  427. It's shameless

  428. to embrace him

  429. with his people

  430. as if we love him

  431. and then betray him

  432. with our sin.

  433. And the truth is

  434. that Judas

  435. was not led

  436. by love of God.

  437. He was led

  438. by love of self.

  439. And possibly

  440. the biggest

  441. wow statement

  442. in all of Scripture

  443. is found in Matthew 26

    Matthew 26:24

  444. verse 24.

  445. And it says

  446. the Son of Man

  447. goes at his written of him

  448. but woe to that man

  449. by whom the Son of Man

  450. is betrayed.

  451. It would have been

  452. better for that man

  453. if he had not

  454. been

  455. born.

  456. What a statement.

  457. The disciples slept.

  458. When God asked them

  459. to get up on their face

  460. and pray with him

  461. they slept.

  462. When he went back

  463. they continued to sleep.

  464. When he went back

  465. again they continued

  466. to sleep.

  467. How many times

  468. has Christ

  469. asked us to go

  470. an extra mile

  471. and we passively

  472. have passed it by?

  473. Judas had the greatest

  474. opportunity

  475. the grandest opportunity

  476. in life

  477. the will of God

  478. and he walked away

  479. from it.

  480. Has God

  481. ever spoken

  482. to you

  483. and found

  484. a professed

  485. Christian

  486. that was too

  487. selfish

  488. in his or her ways

  489. to be obedient?

  490. All the while

  491. he drinks

  492. the cup

  493. of God's wrath

  494. for

  495. your sin

  496. and my sin

  497. and our sin.

  498. he suffers

  499. the cross

  500. as an innocent

  501. man

  502. for the sins

  503. of sinners

  504. that too often

  505. are reckless

  506. and that are not

  507. really willing

  508. to sacrifice

  509. their appetite

  510. for stuff

  511. and their appetite

  512. for lust

  513. and their appetite

  514. for power

  515. for the lordship

  516. of Christ

  517. to really be

  518. in their lives.

  519. I think we need

  520. to fall on our face.

  521. and have a garden

  522. type experience.

  523. In all the sacred places

  524. in the Holy Land

  525. years ago

  526. in that worn

  527. torn area

  528. they began building

  529. chapels

  530. on top of those

  531. sacred spots.

  532. Some of them

  533. great cathedrals

  534. to protect

  535. that spot.

  536. to see where

  537. Christ

  538. was believed

  539. to be born.

  540. You go into

  541. a huge cathedral

  542. and walk

  543. down a narrow

  544. stairway

  545. and look down

  546. in the basement

  547. at one small

  548. spot

  549. that's protected

  550. by all that

  551. building

  552. as to where

  553. he was to be born

  554. in the Palestinian

  555. land of Bethlehem.

  556. the garden

  557. of Gethsemane

  558. is still there.

  559. Some of the olive

  560. trees that are there

  561. were there

  562. when Christ

  563. prayed that day.

  564. When I went

  565. in 2012

  566. there was a man

  567. almost 90 years old

  568. that still took care

  569. of those trees

  570. and he would

  571. prop up the branches

  572. of those

  573. 2,000 year old trees

  574. to make sure

  575. that they

  576. survived.

  577. survived.

  578. It's a special place.

  579. And beside it

  580. there is a large

  581. cathedral built.

  582. We walked into

  583. that building

  584. and across the stage

  585. in the front of it

  586. is a gated area

  587. but inside

  588. that gated area

  589. is a rock

  590. embedded in the ground.

  591. It is the same

  592. rock

  593. facement

  594. that rolls

  595. through all

  596. of the top

  597. of the Mount

  598. of Olives.

  599. And it is thought

  600. to be the rock

  601. in which Christ

  602. agonized

  603. in prayer

  604. that very night.

  605. When I went

  606. that day

  607. that area

  608. was crowded.

  609. They were about

  610. to have some type

  611. of communion service

  612. different denominational

  613. thing than

  614. what I was a part

  615. of.

  616. And I tried

  617. to bust up

  618. among them

  619. and I wasn't

  620. crazy about that.

  621. As I backed

  622. up

  623. and went around

  624. I looked over

  625. in the corner

  626. of that building

  627. and that rock

  628. that rolls

  629. through that building

  630. jetted up

  631. over in the corner

  632. along the wall.

  633. You could see

  634. how the rock

  635. was coming out

  636. of the wall

  637. and how they

  638. had built

  639. that building

  640. around that wall.

  641. Most sacred time

  642. I had

  643. of all of them

  644. in the Holy Land

  645. was walking

  646. over to that corner

  647. putting my hands

  648. on that rock

  649. and kneeling

  650. before it

  651. and saying

  652. thank you Christ.

  653. thank you for

  654. taking on

  655. the cup

  656. of God's wrath

  657. for my sins.

  658. Thank you for how

  659. you've changed

  660. my life

  661. because of what

  662. you were willing

  663. to do for me

  664. and how you went

  665. and hung on

  666. that cross

  667. for me

  668. to have salvation.

  669. May my life

  670. be lived

  671. in gratitude

  672. of what you've

  673. done for me.

  674. I don't know

  675. what you need

  676. to do this morning

  677. but I think

  678. somehow

  679. God's allowed

  680. us to reflect

  681. on that time

  682. for us

  683. to just

  684. thank him

  685. for what

  686. he's done

  687. for us.

  688. For some of you

  689. that's a bowed

  690. head and a

  691. closed eye.

  692. For the others

  693. of you

  694. it could be

  695. a surrender

  696. of your life

  697. and when you

  698. look back

  699. over your

  700. life

  701. no matter

  702. how long

  703. you've been

  704. in church

  705. you realize

  706. that there's

  707. never been

  708. a time

  709. in your life

  710. when you

  711. surrendered

  712. your life

  713. to follow

  714. the Lord

  715. Jesus Christ.

  716. You've never

  717. asked him

  718. to forgive you

  719. of your sins

  720. to come

  721. into your

  722. life

  723. and to

  724. change you.

  725. Maybe

  726. everybody

  727. thinks that

  728. you have

  729. and maybe

  730. nobody

  731. thinks that

  732. you have

  733. but it

  734. really don't

  735. matter

  736. what anybody

  737. thinks

  738. because there

  739. comes a point

  740. in your life

  741. when you

  742. must choose

  743. to take the

  744. offer that

  745. he gives you.

  746. and surrender

  747. your life

  748. to follow

  749. Christ.

  750. If you've

  751. never done

  752. that in

  753. just a few

  754. moments

  755. we're going

  756. to stand

  757. and we're

  758. going to

  759. sing

  760. but more

  761. important

  762. than that

  763. is that

  764. you surrender

  765. your life

  766. to the

  767. Lord

  768. Jesus

  769. Christ.

  770. He lived

  771. a sinless

  772. life and

  773. died a

  774. sinner's

  775. death so

  776. that you

  777. could have

  778. eternal

  779. life.

  780. Maybe

  781. you're here

  782. and you know

  783. you have

  784. done that

  785. but you've

  786. done that

  787. privately

  788. and you've

  789. never done

  790. that publicly

  791. you've never

  792. acknowledged

  793. that.

  794. Jesus

  795. showed us

  796. by example

  797. and by

  798. his teaching

  799. that we

  800. acknowledge

  801. that through

  802. baptism.

  803. And if

  804. you've never

  805. been baptized

  806. as a believer

  807. maybe something

  808. happened early

  809. in your life

  810. but since then

  811. you've made

  812. a decision

  813. for Christ

  814. but you've

  815. never been

  816. baptized

  817. as a believer

  818. you need

  819. to come

  820. make a

  821. commitment

  822. to do

  823. that.

  824. Maybe

  825. you're

  826. just

  827. just like

  828. I was

  829. that day

  830. and as

  831. I am

  832. today.

  833. When you

  834. realize

  835. that

  836. what God

  837. has done

  838. for you

  839. you're

  840. not worthy

  841. of

  842. and that

  843. every breath

  844. that you

  845. live your

  846. life

  847. ought to be

  848. for his

  849. honor

  850. and for

  851. his glory

  852. and the

  853. reality is

  854. we live

  855. in such a

  856. hectic

  857. paced world

  858. that we

  859. don't bother

  860. to settle

  861. down

  862. and wait

  863. a moment

  864. and reflect

  865. upon the

  866. wrath of

  867. God

  868. that Christ

  869. endured

  870. so we

  871. don't have

  872. to.

  873. May this

  874. be our

  875. rock this

  876. morning.

  877. May this

  878. be a

  879. makeshift

  880. altar for

  881. us

  882. to lay

  883. it down

  884. before the

  885. Lord

  886. as he

  887. leads

  888. I'll

  889. never

  890. ask you

  891. to do

  892. anything

  893. that

  894. God

  895. don't

  896. want

  897. you

  898. to

  899. do

  900. and

  901. I

  902. hope

  903. I'll

  904. never

  905. let

  906. you

  907. be

  908. satisfied

  909. with

  910. doing

  911. anything

  912. less.

  913. I just

  914. think you

  915. ought to

  916. honor God

  917. with your

  918. life

  919. today.

  920. Heavenly

  921. Father I

  922. love you

  923. and I

  924. thank you

  925. for the

  926. love that

  927. you have

  928. for us

  929. and I

  930. thank you

  931. dear

  932. Lord

  933. for the

  934. garden

  935. of

  936. Gethsemane

  937. and I

  938. thank you

  939. dear

  940. Lord

  941. for what

  942. you

  943. endured

  944. in that

  945. time

  946. and

  947. I'm

  948. thankful

  949. that you

  950. didn't

  951. consider

  952. our

  953. worthiness

  954. God

  955. I ask

  956. Lord that

  957. we'll leave

  958. here

  959. more committed

  960. to live our

  961. lives for the

  962. Lord Jesus

  963. Christ than

  964. we've ever

  965. been before

  966. and that as

  967. we approach

  968. that day

  969. of celebration

  970. of the

  971. resurrection

  972. of Christ

  973. that our

  974. hearts will

  975. be so

  976. right

  977. and we'll

  978. be so

  979. ready

  980. it'll be a

  981. celebration like

  982. we've never

  983. experienced

  984. oh God

  985. help us to

  986. do the

  987. business at

  988. hand

  989. however you're

  990. leading God

  991. right now

  992. in Jesus

  993. precious name

  994. I pray

  995. amen

  996. stand
