  1. If you have Bibles, I want to turn to Genesis chapter 19.

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  2. Genesis chapter 19, I mentioned in a remind message this week a book,

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  3. and it's kind of just an overflow of something else that's been going on since October.

  4. I meet with men at 6 o'clock and at 9 o'clock on Tuesday mornings,

  5. and we read a common book together and just discuss that book, Bible-themed book.

  6. Right now I'm whooping him like a dog, and he's whooping me too.

  7. A.W. Towser, we'll finish that up this week, take a couple of months off and start back.

  8. And as I began to prepare for the fall and thought about, well, not really fall,

  9. but the end of the summer when we start back and thought about what to read,

  10. this is a book that I had in mind.

  11. I've used it before in that kind of capacity, and as I thought about it,

  12. I thought, no, this might be a good one for everybody to read.

  13. Need something to read over summer that will do us well and maybe open our eyes to some stuff.

  14. And so I bought several copies, and we have them available.

  15. It's called The Unsaved Christian, and interesting work from Dean in Syria.

  16. And I was in a conference last, two weeks ago, and Dean spoke at that conference,

  17. and I went to a breakout session for him, and he spoke again there.

  18. He pastors a church in Tallahassee, City Church, a church he planted,

  19. and reaching a young generation for Christ in a powerful way.

  20. And when I got the case of books in, I took a picture of it and sent him a message on Twitter and said,

  21. Dean direct messaged me, and he did.

  22. And so I said, when we finish this book, is there a possibility for us to get you on Zoom

  23. and have the opportunity to just meet with you and talk to you about what the book is made up of?

  24. So we'll have a special session for that in August or something like that.

  25. And so if you're interested in anything like that, I don't have a dog in a hunt.

  26. Church is paying taxes on it, actually.

  27. So it's $10 a book.

  28. Some guys, when I mentioned it Tuesday morning, they were so excited about it

  29. that they started throwing money at me.

  30. I said, this is not a poker game.

  31. We are buying books anyway.

  32. So they've got some prepaid down here.

  33. If you paid me the other day, I don't know who you are.

  34. I wasn't keeping up.

  35. But if you paid me the other day, it's down here on the front.

  36. If not, Jeff will be in the back and have those books available.

  37. And if we run out, we'll buy some more.

  38. So you won't be tested on it.

  39. I actually thought about what I put in the bulletin.

  40. I told her to put a good slow eye-opening.

  41. It's not really slow.

  42. It's kind of a fast read.

  43. But you can read it slow, is my point, because it's not that big a book.

  44. So enough with the commercial.

  45. Genesis chapter 19.

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  46. What I love about God's Word, a lot of things I love about God's Word,

  47. but when I'm reading Abraham, what I love about God's Word is

  48. that he gives us so many life stories, biographies in Scripture

  49. that we can learn from these guys, especially in the Old Testament.

  50. And I believe God places those there for us to not only understand how he established what we have in our faith today,

  51. but I believe he also pointed out everything about these guys' lives so that we could learn from them.

  52. The biographies of the men and the women in the Old Testament particularly are placed there so that we can learn from their triumphs,

  53. and we can learn from their mistakes, and we can see how God works and how he moves and how we are to respond to him.

  54. And we get to see family relationships.

  55. We get to see where it goes right and where it goes wrong so that we can learn from those things.

  56. And so we spent some time in Abraham.

  57. I don't apologize for that because I believe there's great significance to this.

  58. I was coming home from that conference a couple of weeks ago in Charlotte,

  59. and one of the guys that spoke there, Dr. Bob Smith, wonderful preaching professor from Beeson Seminary,

  60. he said that one thing he's done, they ask about how you prepare for preaching and what do you do and those type of things.

  61. He said, one thing that I've started doing is I've started listening to Scripture.

  62. I just listen to Scripture, listen to somebody read it, and just take in the text more so and just focus on that.

  63. And so I got an app as I was leaving and put that on Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  64. and for one hour listened to somebody with a slightly British accent read the life of Abraham to me.

  65. And it was amazing, although I'm studying it in depth, it was amazing that just by doing that, it helped me to see the intricacies of that.

  66. As well, let me say that we'll always try to post the Scripture that I'm reading from on the screen so that it's there before you and all those things.

  67. But don't underestimate the value of having a copy of God's Word with you.

  68. Sometimes on Saturday night I get to scratching a little bit and changing some things and adding some things and those type things along the way that may not make it to the screen.

  69. And there's some things that in today's passage, for instance, that you might want to underline and to look at.

  70. And so there's great value in having your copy of God's Word as well as I believe it's a wonderful testimony to have it as well.

  71. And so anyway, enough of that.

  72. But I'm thankful for the Word of God telling us the ins and the outs.

  73. And it does tell us that.

  74. And it tells us that way in some ways kind of uncomfortable way, quite honestly.

  75. Today we're looking at Abraham's nephew more so.

  76. His name is Lot.

  77. And if you remember some time ago, we looked at the fact that they, when God told Abraham to leave his family and to travel,

  78. he brought Lot with him.

  79. And that didn't work out so well.

  80. And so they had to split along the way.

  81. Both of them had quite an entourage or a household.

  82. And they began to have some conflicts along the way.

  83. And so they split.

  84. And when Abraham gave Lot a choice of the direction that he would go in, he chose to go east.

  85. Because he saw, he foresaw some prosperity there.

  86. Honestly, the land looked more fertile.

  87. And he headed out toward the most fertile fields.

  88. But what he thought would be promise and would bring promise instead led to much of his demise.

  89. What started as simply devising his own plan led to wondering.

  90. And a lot of times that happens, by the way.

  91. When we devise our own plan, we have a tendency to wonder.

  92. And what starts as little sins leads to great ones.

  93. I just want you to listen how things went south when Lot went east.

  94. It's in Genesis chapter 19.

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  95. Beginning in verse 1, it says this.

  96. The two angels.

  97. Now the angels that it's talking about, we previously looked at three people, three men that came to see Abraham.

  98. And it was clearly identified to us that one of those men was God.

  99. I believe it was the pre-incarnate Christ in Scripture.

  100. And those other two men, it later said in Genesis 18, went on to Sodom.

  101. Now that we're looking at Sodom, it says the two angels.

  102. So what Scripture has done for us is identified a very unique circumstance.

  103. In the sense that three guys came to see Abraham.

  104. One of them was in fact God incarnate.

  105. And two of them were messengers of God, or angels.

  106. And that's what it's talking about here.

  107. It says the two angels came to Sodom in the evening.

  108. And Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom.

  109. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth.

  110. And said, my Lord, my Lord, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet.

  111. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.

  112. And they said, no, we'll spend the night in the town square.

  113. But he pressed them strongly.

  114. So they turned aside to him and entered his house.

  115. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread.

  116. And they ate.

  117. But before they laid down, before they laid down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old,

  118. all the people to the last man surrounded the house.

  119. And they called to Lot, where are the men who came to see you tonight?

  120. Bring them out to us that we may know them.

  121. Lot went out to the men of the entrance.

  122. Shut the door after them and said, shut the door after him and said, I beg you, my brothers, don't act so wickedly.

  123. Behold, I have two daughters who've not known any man.

  124. Let me bring them out to you.

  125. And do to them as you please.

  126. Only do nothing to these men, for they've come under the shelter of my room.

  127. But they said, stand back.

  128. And they said, this fellow came to sojourn.

  129. And he's become the judge.

  130. Now we'll deal worse with you than with them.

  131. And they pressed hard against the man Lot and drew near to break the door down.

  132. But the men reached out their hands, talking about the angels, and brought Lot into the house with him and shut the door.

  133. And they struck, talking about the angels, struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house,

  134. both small and great, so that they wore themselves out, groping for the door.

  135. Then the men said to Lot, have you anyone else here, sons-in-laws, sons, daughters, anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place.

  136. For we're about to destroy this place because the outcry against his people has become great before the Lord.

  137. And the Lord has sent us to destroy it.

  138. So Lot went out and said to his son-in-laws who were to marry his daughters, up, get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city.

  139. But it seemed to his son-in-laws to be jesting.

  140. As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, said, up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city.

  141. But he lingered.

  142. That's an underline, by the way.

  143. But he lingered.

  144. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.

  145. And as they brought him out, one said, escape for your life.

  146. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley.

  147. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.

  148. And Lot said to them, oh, no, my lords.

  149. Behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness and saving my life.

  150. But I can't escape to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me and I'll die.

  151. Behold, this city is near enough to flee to, and it's a little one.

  152. Let me escape there.

  153. Is it not a little one?

  154. And my life will be saved.

  155. He said to them, behold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.

  156. Escape there quickly, for I can do nothing till you arrive there.

  157. Therefore, the name of the city was called Zor.

  158. The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zor.

  159. Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven.

  160. And he overthrew those cities and all the valley and all the inhabitants of the city and what grew on the ground.

  161. But Lot's wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

  162. And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord.

  163. And he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley.

  164. And he looked, and behold, the smoke of the land went up like a smoke of a furnace.

  165. So it was there when God destroyed the cities of the valley.

  166. God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the mist of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.

  167. Let's pray together.

  168. Lord, this passage is kind of overwhelming, quite honestly, to me as I read it.

  169. To see that the mess that Lot put his family in,

  170. and the decisions that he made that cost them greatly.

  171. God, I ask that you'll help us to learn from his experience,

  172. so that we don't make the same kind of mistakes.

  173. But instead, Lord, that we follow your plan immediately,

  174. what you would have for us, Father.

  175. In Jesus' name, amen.

  176. Man, there's so much to dig through here.

  177. I don't have time, and you don't want me to take the time to do it.

  178. It is what it is.

  179. It's a sad situation, quite honestly.

  180. There's some mistakes along the way that may have seemed small.

  181. Some of his mistakes might even seem smart to him, quite honestly.

  182. But it got him in a mess that continued to cost him big.

  183. And how he handled it was foolish to say the best.

  184. But what I want to focus on this morning for a few minutes

  185. is to notice the contrast between Abraham and Lot.

  186. Two different dudes doing two different things.

  187. Now, I will say at the beginning,

  188. Lot is called in Scripture later righteous.

  189. So it's not that we're talking about a wicked, horrible person at all.

  190. We're talking about somebody who made bad decisions.

  191. And out of those bad decisions,

  192. we can learn to make good ones.

  193. The first difference that I want you to notice about these men

  194. are their locations.

  195. Abraham was near the great trees of Mamrie

  196. where he built an altar for the Lord.

  197. That he came back and revisited.

  198. And where God met with him.

  199. Lot was in Sodom.

  200. Sodom is the picture of the wickedness of the world in one city.

  201. Chapter 19 is merely an example.

  202. We get the word sodomy from the city Sodom.

  203. My friend, when you sleep with trash,

  204. you smell like trash and you'll become trash.

  205. And so was the case with Lot.

  206. You better be careful where you pitch your tent.

  207. Not only were their locations different,

  208. but their plans were different.

  209. Genesis 18 verse 1 tells us that

    Genesis 18:1

  210. Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent.

  211. He was a nomad.

  212. He was a man on the go.

  213. Not just wondering, but being guided by God.

  214. He went when God told him to go.

  215. He went where God told him to go.

  216. And he went how God told him to go.

  217. And he stopped when God told him to stop.

  218. And God's plan for him was his plan.

  219. Hebrews 11 verse 10 tells us this.

    Hebrews 11:10

  220. It said,

  221. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations,

  222. whose designer and builder is God.

  223. In other words, he's looking beyond this world.

  224. He just wanted to follow God.

  225. And Abraham's sights were set on bigger things.

  226. Lot, however,

  227. Genesis 19 tells us,

  228. was sitting in the gateway of the city.

  229. Do you realize what that means?

  230. That when you have a walled city,

  231. the gateway became the lingering place.

  232. It's where the markets were

  233. because everybody had to go through there

  234. if they were leaving town

  235. or if they were coming to town.

  236. It was a busy spot.

  237. But you know who else sat there?

  238. The sages.

  239. Those who led the city.

  240. Those who had strong influence in the town.

  241. And Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city.

  242. Either means he was giving advice to the city

  243. or he was taking it from the city.

  244. One of the others, what that means.

  245. He was a major player in that city.

  246. A town spokesman.

  247. An honoree of sorts.

  248. That's not bad unless it's a wicked city.

  249. And Lot was up to bad stuff.

  250. Self-made stuff is the biggest problem with it.

  251. Self-made and wrong stuff.

  252. I want you to notice

  253. their plans.

  254. The third thing I want you to notice

  255. is their passions.

  256. In Genesis 18,

  257. God appeared to Abraham

  258. along with two of his messengers,

  259. which we've determined are angels from Scripture.

  260. And when Abraham saw

  261. what appeared to be messengers from God,

  262. he hurried from the entrance of his tent

  263. to meet them.

  264. That's in Genesis 18, verse 2.

    Genesis 18:2

  265. As opposed to that,

  266. when angels in the form of two men came to Lot,

  267. Genesis 19, 1 tells us

  268. he simply got up to meet them.

  269. Now, there's a difference

  270. in hurrying out to meet somebody

  271. and just getting up to meet somebody.

  272. You want to know the difference in that

  273. is my dog and my kids.

  274. Okay?

  275. That's the difference.

  276. Who wags their tails

  277. and meets me at the door

  278. when I get home?

  279. It's not my kids.

  280. You know?

  281. Men, if you ever wondered

  282. if your dog or your wife

  283. loves you more,

  284. I got a test for you.

  285. Lock them both in the trunk of the car

  286. and see who's happy to see you

  287. after an hour.

  288. Don't do that.

  289. Okay?

  290. That's a joke.

  291. Abraham had such a love for God

  292. every time he felt his presence,

  293. saw a manifestation of him,

  294. he ran to him.

  295. He had a passion.

  296. He had a zeal for God.

  297. I've never met someone

  298. who did not have a passion

  299. for something.

  300. And Abraham had one

  301. for God.

  302. Their passions were different.

  303. Not only that,

  304. but their offerings were different.

  305. When Abraham offered

  306. to host his company,

  307. they were appreciative.

  308. That's in Genesis 18.5.

  309. When Lot gave the identical invitation,

  310. they were first declined.

  311. That's in Genesis 19.2.

  312. But Abraham was much more personal.

  313. He was offering himself

  314. and all that he had.

  315. Lot was simply offering

  316. his possessions.

  317. God's not interested

  318. in keeping company

  319. with your possessions.

  320. He wants you.

  321. He wants you.

  322. And when you draw the lines

  323. in the sand

  324. of what he can have

  325. and what he can't have,

  326. that's not surrender.

  327. surrender.

  328. God wants us.

  329. And when he has us,

  330. our possessions

  331. are his as well

  332. because he's got us.

  333. It's a priority factor

  334. of what's most important to us.

  335. But there was a difference

  336. in what they offer.

  337. Not only that,

  338. but there was a difference

  339. in their families.

  340. Chapter 18 shows us

  341. that Abraham's family

  342. was a household with purpose

  343. and working together

  344. with common priorities.

  345. Lot had to go this alone.

  346. He had a family

  347. but they were not helping.

  348. Genesis 19 verse 3

    Genesis 19:3

  349. tells us that.

  350. And then apparently

  351. they were unsettled

  352. and they were unhealthy.

  353. In verse 14,

  354. when he told the son-in-laws

  355. what they needed to do,

  356. they didn't take him seriously.

  357. They thought he was kidding.

  358. Sin always promises

  359. a good time

  360. with fun company

  361. but it's only for a season.

  362. Sin is the loneliest place

  363. on earth

  364. and then if without Jesus

  365. you die,

  366. you go to hell.

  367. And I want to be clear

  368. about something.

  369. You don't go to hell

  370. with a company of friends

  371. to rejoice with there.

  372. Not at all.

  373. We'll look in detail

  374. this fall

  375. on what the scripture

  376. tells us

  377. about not only heaven

  378. but about hell.

  379. But I want you to know

  380. what stands out

  381. about hell so much

  382. is the loneliness

  383. and the absence

  384. of God's presence.

  385. the suffering

  386. primarily

  387. from the absence

  388. of God's presence.

  389. Sin promises

  390. a good time

  391. but it lies to you.

  392. Their families

  393. were different.

  394. Not only that

  395. but their welcomes

  396. were different.

  397. Genesis 18 verse 8

    Genesis 18:8

  398. tells us that Abraham

  399. joined them as they ate.

  400. He fellowshiped with them.

  401. They conversed

  402. as they ate.

  403. Lot however

  404. went outside

  405. to turn away

  406. the wicked men.

  407. He shut the door

  408. behind him

  409. leaving his gift

  410. in the house

  411. unattended.

  412. One is sitting down.

  413. The other

  414. is fending off.

  415. Let me ask you something.

  416. What do you do

  417. when God comes

  418. to see you?

  419. When you really

  420. sense his presence

  421. in your life?

  422. When you really feel

  423. like he's speaking

  424. to you about a matter

  425. in your life?

  426. How do you respond

  427. to that?

  428. When God probes

  429. your heart

  430. do you sit down

  431. and sup with him?

  432. Do you fellowship

  433. with him about that?

  434. Are you like

  435. like are you trying

  436. to close out

  437. all the wickedness

  438. in your life

  439. and keep it

  440. away from God?

  441. Do you open

  442. yourself up

  443. to the Lord?

  444. Do you open

  445. yourself up

  446. to him in prayer?

  447. when you read

  448. God's word

  449. do you open

  450. yourself up

  451. to the word

  452. of God

  453. and allow him

  454. to speak

  455. and work

  456. and move

  457. in your life?

  458. Whereas

  459. godliness

  460. opens spiritual

  461. doors

  462. wickedness

  463. shuts them

  464. and what

  465. you'll find

  466. is when

  467. you close

  468. yourself

  469. off

  470. if you

  471. have a

  472. pattern

  473. of reading

  474. God's word

  475. in your life

  476. and I've

  477. encouraged that

  478. and I'll

  479. continue to

  480. encourage it

  481. but if you

  482. have a pattern

  483. of such

  484. like that

  485. but you're

  486. not allowing

  487. the Holy

  488. Spirit

  489. to work

  490. and move

  491. in your

  492. life

  493. you're not

  494. opening

  495. yourself

  496. up to what

  497. God would

  498. have you

  499. to show

  500. in God's

  501. word

  502. you'll

  503. grow less

  504. passion

  505. for reading

  506. God's

  507. word

  508. your passion

  509. for the

  510. Lord will

  511. dull

  512. because you're

  513. not receiving

  514. what he has

  515. to say to

  516. you

  517. you're not

  518. responding

  519. to it

  520. same thing

  521. happens

  522. if there's

  523. sin in your

  524. life and

  525. God reveals

  526. that sin

  527. and asks you

  528. to respond

  529. to it

  530. in obedience

  531. and you

  532. fail to

  533. respond to

  534. that in

  535. obedience

  536. don't you

  537. dare think

  538. that that

  539. don't affect

  540. you in

  541. your personal

  542. relationship

  543. with God

  544. and how

  545. scripture

  546. speaks to

  547. your heart

  548. and life

  549. how you're

  550. able to

  551. worship

  552. not only

  553. privately

  554. but publicly

  555. makes a

  556. huge amount

  557. of difference

  558. there was a

  559. difference

  560. in the

  561. welcomes

  562. to the

  563. Lord

  564. not only

  565. that but

  566. there was a

  567. difference

  568. in their

  569. words

  570. from God

  571. and I

  572. mean the

  573. personal

  574. word that

  575. God gave

  576. them

  577. both got a

  578. message from

  579. the Lord

  580. Abraham

  581. received a

  582. word of

  583. blessing

  584. in Genesis

  585. 8 18

  586. verse 10

  587. he tells

  588. in the

  589. blessing

  590. will be

  591. the promise

  592. of Isaac

  593. coming in

  594. about a

  595. year

  596. the long

  597. awaited

  598. promise

  599. would

  600. finally

  601. be

  602. fulfilled

  603. now

  604. Lot

  605. on the

  606. other hand

  607. was warned

  608. in Genesis

  609. 19 15

  610. and he

  611. said he

  612. and his

  613. family were

  614. to leave

  615. that city

  616. that city

  617. that he

  618. set out

  619. on his

  620. own

  621. desires

  622. and went

  623. to

  624. it's

  625. interesting

  626. to me

  627. that we

  628. often

  629. seek

  630. what we

  631. do not

  632. need

  633. I want

  634. you to

  635. think about

  636. this for

  637. just a

  638. minute

  639. I hope

  640. you get

  641. this

  642. it seems

  643. in the

  644. times when

  645. we're in

  646. sin

  647. we need

  648. God's

  649. directive

  650. warning

  651. but we

  652. seek his

  653. love

  654. we just

  655. want God

  656. to love

  657. us

  658. in spite of

  659. what we're

  660. doing

  661. we don't

  662. really want to

  663. change what

  664. we're doing

  665. we just want

  666. him to love

  667. us in spite

  668. of that

  669. and get

  670. pretty defensive

  671. about that

  672. sometimes

  673. but when

  674. we're striving

  675. to please

  676. him

  677. and living

  678. for him

  679. we seek

  680. his direction

  681. we want

  682. his direction

  683. and we think

  684. less about

  685. his love

  686. and his

  687. grace

  688. because

  689. we're

  690. seeking

  691. the Lord

  692. and we

  693. want his

  694. direction

  695. and in

  696. reality

  697. it happens

  698. just the

  699. opposite

  700. because when

  701. we're dirty

  702. and we don't

  703. want to hear

  704. it God

  705. gives us

  706. a directive

  707. warning

  708. it's what

  709. he did

  710. a lot

  711. and when

  712. we're seeking

  713. his face

  714. yet

  715. failing

  716. too much

  717. to make

  718. us content

  719. he loves

  720. us

  721. he loves

  722. us

  723. through that

  724. because he

  725. knows we're

  726. imperfect

  727. and he loves

  728. us through

  729. that

  730. he knows

  731. what we

  732. need

  733. whether we're

  734. ready for it

  735. or not

  736. he knows

  737. that

  738. so I

  739. ask you

  740. how is

  741. God

  742. speaking

  743. to you

  744. what are

  745. you looking

  746. for

  747. and how is

  748. he speaking

  749. to you

  750. are you

  751. looking for

  752. some type

  753. warning

  754. the reality

  755. is if

  756. you're seeking

  757. the Lord

  758. with your

  759. life

  760. and there's

  761. not manifest

  762. sin

  763. recurring

  764. sin

  765. in your

  766. life

  767. and you're

  768. seeking

  769. the Lord

  770. and you're

  771. asking God

  772. show me

  773. this and show

  774. me this

  775. and show

  776. me this

  777. I'll tell

  778. you he'll

  779. flood you

  780. with his

  781. love

  782. and grace

  783. is what

  784. he'll do

  785. and if

  786. there's

  787. things in

  788. your life

  789. that you're

  790. trying to

  791. hide from

  792. God

  793. what a joke

  794. that don't

  795. work

  796. but if

  797. there's

  798. things in

  799. your life

  800. that you

  801. want to

  802. hold on

  803. to and

  804. you don't

  805. want to

  806. give over

  807. to the

  808. Lord

  809. and you're

  810. trying to

  811. hide from

  812. God

  813. you just

  814. want him

  815. to love

  816. you in

  817. spite of

  818. that

  819. I mean

  820. I know

  821. I'm doing

  822. wrong

  823. things

  824. but God

  825. I just

  826. want you

  827. to put

  828. your grace

  829. upon me

  830. and love

  831. me in

  832. spite of

  833. that

  834. he'll give

  835. you a

  836. direct

  837. warning

  838. and you'll

  839. feel that

  840. then you'll

  841. get mad

  842. at the

  843. preacher

  844. because

  845. sometimes

  846. it came

  847. from him

  848. and that

  849. ain't the

  850. truth

  851. that ain't

  852. the way

  853. that works

  854. God knew

  855. before the

  856. foundation of

  857. the earth

  858. what people

  859. needed to

  860. hear today

  861. in this

  862. room

  863. and so I

  864. trust him

  865. with that

  866. I had a

  867. preacher one

  868. time tell

  869. me unless

  870. you finish

  871. your sermon

  872. on Saturday

  873. night

  874. you're not

  875. being sensitive

  876. to the Holy

  877. Spirit

  878. because you're

  879. not watching

  880. what's going

  881. on in the

  882. world

  883. and I

  884. said dude

  885. I believe

  886. that for the

  887. foundation of

  888. the earth

  889. God knew

  890. exactly what

  891. I was to

  892. preach when

  893. I was to

  894. preach it

  895. and who I

  896. was to

  897. preach it

  898. to and I

  899. think he

  900. knew what

  901. was going

  902. on in their

  903. lives and

  904. what they

  905. needed to

  906. hear so I

  907. don't have

  908. to figure

  909. out the

  910. world nor

  911. the congregation

  912. I just have

  913. to stick to

  914. God's word

  915. just preach

  916. what he tells

  917. me to

  918. preach

  919. and let

  920. it stick

  921. where it

  922. may

  923. because God

  924. will speak

  925. to you

  926. exactly where

  927. you are

  928. and give

  929. you what

  930. you need

  931. how must

  932. God speak

  933. to you

  934. based upon

  935. your life

  936. right now

  937. there was

  938. also a

  939. difference in

  940. their walks

  941. whereas in

  942. Genesis 18

  943. 16 and 17

  944. it shares

  945. with us

  946. that Abraham

  947. walked with

  948. God and

  949. God shared

  950. his plan

  951. with him

  952. in chapter

  953. 19 verse

  954. 20 lot

  955. hesitated to

  956. walk in

  957. his grace

  958. and God

  959. told him

  960. to flee

  961. and in

  962. verse 16

  963. it said

  964. that he

  965. lingered

  966. God told

  967. him to

  968. flee and

  969. he lingered

  970. there's a

  971. passage in

  972. Joseph's life

  973. where

  974. Potiphar's

  975. wife pursues

  976. him

  977. tempts him

  978. it's very

  979. forward with

  980. him

  981. to ask

  982. him to

  983. be with

  984. her

  985. and scripture

  986. says that

  987. he ran

  988. so hard

  989. he left

  990. his coat

  991. in her

  992. hand

  993. that's what

  994. Lot needed

  995. to do about

  996. Sodom

  997. he just

  998. needed to

  999. get out

  1000. but he

  1001. didn't

  1002. he lingered

  1003. some people

  1004. are happy

  1005. with God

  1006. just saving

  1007. them from

  1008. the pits

  1009. just taking

  1010. care of

  1011. their needs

  1012. and they

  1013. live their

  1014. life like

  1015. that

  1016. but then

  1017. some seek

  1018. to walk

  1019. with God

  1020. and it is

  1021. those that

  1022. seek to walk

  1023. with God

  1024. that God

  1025. shares his

  1026. plans with

  1027. he lets

  1028. you in

  1029. on it

  1030. I want

  1031. you to

  1032. notice the

  1033. difference

  1034. in their

  1035. prayers

  1036. in Genesis

    Genesis 18:23

  1037. 18 verse

  1038. 23

  1039. Abraham

  1040. interceded

  1041. on behalf

  1042. of the

  1043. whole city

  1044. we talked

  1045. about that

  1046. how he

  1047. prayed for

  1048. them

  1049. diligently

  1050. but in

  1051. Genesis

    Genesis 19:20

  1052. 19 verse

  1053. 20

  1054. Lot

  1055. simply

  1056. pleaded

  1057. for himself

  1058. he simply

  1059. wanted a

  1060. way out

  1061. he was

  1062. simply

  1063. watching out

  1064. for him

  1065. let me

  1066. escape

  1067. let my

  1068. life

  1069. be saved

  1070. what are

  1071. your prayers

  1072. focused on

  1073. are they

  1074. selfish

  1075. requests

  1076. are they

  1077. selfless

  1078. surrenders

  1079. what are

  1080. they

  1081. because prayer

  1082. is really

  1083. a surrender

  1084. it's nothing

  1085. less than

  1086. that

  1087. it's a

  1088. surrender

  1089. one more

  1090. thing I want

  1091. you to see

  1092. and it was

  1093. their attitudes

  1094. their attitudes

  1095. were different

  1096. Jesus 18

  1097. Abraham was

  1098. praying

  1099. he's seeing

  1100. himself as

  1101. only dust

  1102. and ashes

  1103. in verse

  1104. 27

  1105. but in

  1106. Genesis 19

    Genesis 19:19

  1107. verse 19

  1108. Lot calls

  1109. himself

  1110. God's

  1111. servant

  1112. but when

  1113. God told

  1114. him to

  1115. flee

  1116. he said

  1117. he couldn't

  1118. call

  1119. yourself

  1120. what you

  1121. want to

  1122. but unless

  1123. you're sold

  1124. out to

  1125. God

  1126. you're not

  1127. his servant

  1128. and so the

  1129. question is

  1130. what are the

  1131. limitations that

  1132. we throw

  1133. before God

  1134. what are those

  1135. areas of our

  1136. life when we

  1137. don't want him

  1138. messing with

  1139. and if there's

  1140. any of those

  1141. we always are

  1142. going to settle

  1143. for God's

  1144. second best in

  1145. our life if

  1146. we're holding

  1147. things back

  1148. for being

  1149. everything that

  1150. we can be

  1151. for the

  1152. Lord

  1153. I will

  1154. tell you

  1155. that Lot's

  1156. life is a

  1157. preponderance

  1158. of small

  1159. mistakes along

  1160. the way

  1161. it's just a

  1162. build up of

  1163. small mistakes

  1164. as a matter of

  1165. fact 2 Peter

    2 Peter 2:7

  1166. chapter 2

  1167. verse 7

  1168. and 8

  1169. tells us

  1170. that he was

  1171. a righteous

  1172. man that

  1173. was distressed

  1174. by the filthy

  1175. lives of lawless

  1176. men and that

  1177. he was living

  1178. day to day

  1179. with them

  1180. and it

  1181. tormented him

  1182. that's what

  1183. Peter tells us

  1184. about Lot

  1185. however he

  1186. chose his

  1187. course

  1188. and it

  1189. started small

  1190. he just saw

  1191. good land

  1192. he just thought

  1193. he'd take

  1194. advantage of a

  1195. deal

  1196. you go your

  1197. way and I'll

  1198. go mine and

  1199. you pick which

  1200. way well I'm

  1201. gonna pick the

  1202. best you know

  1203. and his drift

  1204. into the mess

  1205. that we see

  1206. in 19 that I

  1207. purposely didn't

  1208. focus on some

  1209. of it because

  1210. it's sickening

  1211. to me honestly

  1212. that mess that

  1213. he's in

  1214. that didn't

  1215. come overnight

  1216. just a trickle

  1217. just a slow

  1218. drift

  1219. headed the wrong

  1220. way

  1221. pitching your

  1222. tent in the

  1223. wrong place

  1224. watch the drift

  1225. in Genesis

    Genesis 13:12

  1226. 13 verse 12

  1227. he pitches

  1228. his tent

  1229. near Sodom

  1230. in Genesis

    Genesis 14:12

  1231. 14 verse 12

  1232. he's living

  1233. in Sodom

  1234. in Genesis

    Genesis 19:1

  1235. 19 verse 1

  1236. he's sitting

  1237. at the gateway

  1238. of Sodom

  1239. just slowly

  1240. moving in

  1241. and destroying

  1242. everything that

  1243. he knows

  1244. it's the

  1245. antithesis of

  1246. of Psalm

    Psalms 1 chapter mention

  1247. chapter 1

  1248. when Psalm

    Psalms 1 chapter mention

  1249. chapter 1

  1250. says

  1251. blessed

  1252. is the

  1253. man

  1254. who

  1255. walks

  1256. not in

  1257. the

  1258. counsel

  1259. of the

  1260. wicked

  1261. nor

  1262. stands

  1263. in

  1264. the

  1265. way

  1266. of

  1267. sin

  1268. nor

  1269. sits

  1270. in

  1271. the

  1272. seat

  1273. of

  1274. scoffers

  1275. but his

  1276. delight

  1277. is in

  1278. the

  1279. law

  1280. of the

  1281. Lord

  1282. and on

  1283. his

  1284. law

  1285. he

  1286. meditates

  1287. day

  1288. and

  1289. night

  1290. he's

  1291. like

  1292. a

  1293. tree

  1294. planted

  1295. by

  1296. streams

  1297. of

  1298. water

  1299. that

  1300. yield

  1301. its

  1302. fruit

  1303. and

  1304. season

  1305. and

  1306. its

  1307. leaf

  1308. does

  1309. not

  1310. wither

  1311. and all

  1312. that

  1313. he

  1314. does

  1315. he

  1316. prospers

  1317. was it

  1318. all on

  1319. purpose

  1320. did he

  1321. mean to

  1322. live in

  1323. a condemned

  1324. city

  1325. no

  1326. he

  1327. simply

  1328. wanted

  1329. the

  1330. best

  1331. of

  1332. both

  1333. worlds

  1334. that's

  1335. what

  1336. he

  1337. wanted

  1338. and

  1339. his

  1340. sins

  1341. although

  1342. they

  1343. may

  1344. be

  1345. little

  1346. they

  1347. cost

  1348. him

  1349. big

  1350. and

  1351. the

  1352. results

  1353. was

  1354. disaster

  1355. you

  1356. see

  1357. Abraham

  1358. sought

  1359. the

  1360. Lord

  1361. at

  1362. all

  1363. cost

  1364. and

  1365. Lot

  1366. some

  1367. of

  1368. God

  1369. at

  1370. no

  1371. cost

  1372. is

  1373. what

  1374. he

  1375. sought

  1376. it's

  1377. contrasting

  1378. conditions

  1379. God

  1380. gives

  1381. us

  1382. choices

  1383. and

  1384. the

  1385. choice

  1386. is

  1387. ours

  1388. but

  1389. so

  1390. are

  1391. the

  1392. ramifications

  1393. may

  1394. we

  1395. look

  1396. at

  1397. someone

  1398. else's

  1399. wayward

  1400. life

  1401. and

  1402. learn

  1403. from

  1404. it

  1405. so

  1406. we

  1407. don't

  1408. do

  1409. the

  1410. same

  1411. in

  1412. our

  1413. own

  1414. life

  1415. with

  1416. every

  1417. head

  1418. bowed

  1419. and

  1420. every

  1421. eye

  1422. closed

  1423. if

  1424. you're

  1425. here

  1426. this

  1427. morning

  1428. and

  1429. you've

  1430. never

  1431. surrendered

  1432. your

  1433. life

  1434. to

  1435. the

  1436. Lord

  1437. Jesus

  1438. Christ

  1439. I

  1440. want

  1441. you

  1442. to

  1443. know

  1444. he'll

  1445. save

  1446. you

  1447. today

  1448. he's

  1449. speaking

  1450. to your

  1451. heart's

  1452. life

  1453. it's

  1454. only

  1455. because

  1456. he

  1457. pursues

  1458. you

  1459. gives

  1460. you

  1461. the

  1462. opportunity

  1463. to

  1464. respond

  1465. to him

  1466. in

  1467. obedience

  1468. if that's

  1469. never

  1470. happened

  1471. to you

  1472. there's

  1473. no need

  1474. for you

  1475. to put

  1476. that off

  1477. any

  1478. longer

  1479. love to

  1480. guide

  1481. you in

  1482. that

  1483. maybe you're

  1484. here this

  1485. morning and

  1486. and you

  1487. have done

  1488. that

  1489. but

  1490. the

  1491. reality

  1492. is

  1493. you're

  1494. a

  1495. Christian

  1496. today

  1497. and

  1498. like

  1499. a lot

  1500. there's

  1501. some

  1502. similarities

  1503. in your

  1504. life

  1505. there's

  1506. just

  1507. some

  1508. slipping

  1509. some

  1510. stuff

  1511. that

  1512. you've

  1513. handled

  1514. yourself

  1515. instead

  1516. of

  1517. handling

  1518. God

  1519. some

  1520. ways

  1521. you've

  1522. pointed

  1523. your

  1524. own

  1525. direction

  1526. instead

  1527. of

  1528. trusting

  1529. God

  1530. and

  1531. his

  1532. you

  1533. need

  1534. to

  1535. get

  1536. that

  1537. right

  1538. whether

  1539. it's

  1540. publicly

  1541. or

  1542. privately

  1543. you

  1544. need

  1545. to

  1546. get

  1547. it

  1548. right

  1549. whether

  1550. it's

  1551. at

  1552. this

  1553. altar

  1554. or at

  1555. your

  1556. church

  1557. you

  1558. feel

  1559. like

  1560. the

  1561. Holy

  1562. Spirit

  1563. is

  1564. drawing

  1565. you

  1566. into

  1567. this

  1568. church

  1569. you

  1570. want

  1571. to

  1572. join

  1573. us

  1574. along

  1575. for

  1576. the

  1577. journey

  1578. I

  1579. encourage

  1580. you

  1581. if

  1582. God

  1583. is

  1584. leading

  1585. that

  1586. come

  1587. we'll

  1588. talk

  1589. about

  1590. that

  1591. maybe

  1592. you're

  1593. here

  1594. and

  1595. you

  1596. know

  1597. that

  1598. you're

  1599. a

  1600. Christian

  1601. but

  1602. you've

  1603. never

  1604. been

  1605. baptized

  1606. as a

  1607. believer

  1608. it's

  1609. never

  1610. happened

  1611. that's

  1612. the

  1613. first

  1614. step

  1615. of

  1616. obedience

  1617. that'll

  1618. be

  1619. a

  1620. hindrance

  1621. to

  1622. you

  1623. in

  1624. your

  1625. spiritual

  1626. life

  1627. for

  1628. the

  1629. Lord

  1630. we'd

  1631. love

  1632. to

  1633. guide

  1634. you

  1635. in

  1636. that

  1637. process

  1638. no

  1639. pressure

  1640. just

  1641. conversations

  1642. from

  1643. guides

  1644. Lord

  1645. Jesus

  1646. thank you

  1647. for

  1648. showing

  1649. us

  1650. a lot

  1651. it's

  1652. ugly

  1653. I

  1654. don't

  1655. like

  1656. reading

  1657. it

  1658. I

  1659. don't

  1660. like

  1661. thinking

  1662. about

  1663. it

  1664. being

  1665. put

  1666. in

  1667. such

  1668. a

  1669. situation

  1670. being

  1671. in

  1672. such

  1673. a

  1674. city

  1675. but

  1676. God

  1677. I

  1678. pray

  1679. today

  1680. that

  1681. you'll

  1682. help

  1683. us

  1684. to

  1685. learn

  1686. from

  1687. it

  1688. and

  1689. help

  1690. us

  1691. to

  1692. respond

  1693. in

  1694. obedience

  1695. because

  1696. of it

  1697. Father

  1698. I

  1699. pray

  1700. in

  1701. Jesus

  1702. name

  1703. Amen
