  1. I don't like them. I never have. As a matter of fact, when I was a student, I had two recurring

  2. nightmares. The first one is naked in a high school hallway. I don't know why you dream that.

  3. I studied dreams as a minor in psychology. I never figured out what that was about,

  4. but that has nothing to do with the sermon, but I had to be honest. I got two nightmares.

  5. Anyway, the second was that at the end of a semester, don't make that come back to haunt me,

  6. but anyway, at the end of a semester, I have an exam and I haven't been to class. It's a class I

  7. signed up for and I never went to the class, and now I don't know what to do. So I don't like tests.

  8. I sure don't like pop quizzes and are tests that you're not expecting. And today,

  9. we look at one of the biggest tests, probably in all of history, but we sure look at the biggest

  10. test in Abraham's life. And it's not in a classroom. It's at a place of worship. Now, in Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  11. 11, they have a list of those who lived by faith. It's a wonderful example of how to live by faith and

  12. what they did in their lives that stood out to live by faith. It is what's often called the hall of fame

  13. of faith. And Abraham is one of the, he's in the foyer of the hall of fame of faith. And you don't get

  14. there without going through some trials in your life, some tests in your life. And this is probably

  15. the climax of his life. He has withstood his toughest test of faith in our passage today.

  16. And it's pretty crucial for us too, because we learn a lot, I believe, from this passage about one of

  17. the most difficult subjects of our faith. And that is the tests of God. They're often unexpected.

  18. They're often misunderstood. They can be very frustrating. However, they're always for a purpose.

  19. And they're always timely. For instance, this could not have taken place at any other time in Abraham's

  20. life. And God had been preparing him, at least indirectly so, for a hundred years, literally,

  21. for this test. Yet, even with that, the demanded sacrifice is admittedly hard to grasp. Now listen,

  22. this is a familiar story to many. But if it is not to you, brace yourself. Okay? Genesis chapter 22,

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  23. beginning in verse 1, it says this, after these things, God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham,

  24. and he said, here am I. He said, take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of

  25. Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  26. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and

  27. his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to a place of which God had

  28. told him. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said

  29. to his young men, stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again

  30. to you. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son. And he took

  31. in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father,

  32. Abraham, my father, my father. And he said, here am I, my son. He said, behold the fire and the wood,

  33. but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, God will provide for himself

  34. the lamb for a burnt offering, my son. So they went, both of them, together. When they came to the place

  35. of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac,

  36. his son, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the

  37. knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, Abraham,

  38. Abraham. And he said, here I am. And he said, do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him.

  39. For I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me.

  40. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked and behold, behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his

  41. horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

  42. So Abraham called the name of that place the Lord will provide. As it is said to this day,

  43. on the mount of the Lord, it shall be provided. Let's pray together. Heavenly Father, I pray today

  44. that more than the historic details of Abraham and Isaac's life, as important as they may be,

  45. that we'll instead see the relation of this story to our own lives.

  46. God, I speak to folks today, some of which are going through tests. Some of them have been through tests

  47. and some of them will go into tests. But God, I pray today that you'll give us guidance.

  48. Guidance for what has happened to us. Guidance for what is happening to us. Guidance, oh God,

  49. for what will happen to us. And help us, Lord, to trust you more after learning the truths of your word.

  50. In Jesus' precious name. Amen. What an event. Why was Abraham asked to do this? Now, don't let the end

  51. result take away from the difficulty of the story because when you suffer difficulty from a test of God

  52. and you're in the middle of it, you feel the weight of it. So I want you to feel the weight

  53. of what Abraham dealt with. This was a three-day walk with Abraham and Isaac. And there was some

  54. pondering going on on that walk. Isaac's wondering, how is this all going to work out? And Abraham's

  55. going, how is this all going to work out? Now, I could tell you about pagan rituals of that day

  56. that would make something like this rather common. It was a familiar concept for pagans of that day

  57. to make those kinds of sacrifices. Those rituals that made the society more susceptible

  58. to understand the story than we do today. But I can't soften the request.

  59. And any way you soften it, the demanded sacrifice, it's difficult to grasp.

  60. But the lesson from it is invaluable. Anyone that God is going to use, he's going to test.

  61. It relates to every one of us because God wants to use you. And in order to make you ready for that,

  62. he has to test you. I don't pretend to say that every test is the same. I don't believe you ought

  63. to ever tell anybody, I know exactly what you're going through. Because you don't. You may have lost

  64. the same kind of relational loved one as they did, but those relationships were different. You don't know

  65. exactly those circumstances. You may have had a relative that got into trouble like yours has got

  66. into trouble. And so you understand that somewhat, but all those circumstances are different.

  67. You may be going through a health crisis right now or a relational crisis right now

  68. or a personal and mental crisis right now. And the reality is when somebody tells you,

  69. I know exactly which. No, they don't. No, they don't. Maybe they've suffered through the same

  70. kind of test that you've went through, the medical test and all those things, trying to find a

  71. diagnosis. Maybe they've dealt with that. Maybe they've had similar confusions than you have.

  72. But the reality is we're all individual. I mean, listen, no temptation exceeds you except what is common

  73. to man. There's a commonality among us. But when it comes to the difficulties of our life, we don't know

  74. exactly what anybody is suffering for that. So each situation is different, even when they look the

  75. same. And when we bring into a test or a dilemma, what we bring into that is different for every

  76. person. You can emphasize or empathize or you can sympathize with them, but don't ever pretend to know

  77. you understand completely what they're going through because you don't.

  78. And by the way, if you don't know what to say, don't say anything. Okay. I have heard more

  79. preachers fill up an empty spot with words because you could tell you didn't know what they said, what

  80. they had to say. Your presence makes a difference when somebody's going through a dilemma. I promise you.

  81. All of God's tests are not the same. There's some common characteristics, and I want to focus

  82. on the common characteristics of those tests because they're found here in this account.

  83. But they're all different.

  84. Let me give you the commonalities. The tests of God are unexpected.

  85. I doubt when a test comes you ever understand the timing of it.

  86. But never does it come out of the blue.

  87. God knew it was coming

  88. for him, and he placed it

  89. in his infinite timing

  90. where it needed to be for the circumstances.

  91. And Genesis 22 verse 1

    Genesis 22:1

  92. begins by saying, after these things.

  93. That's what the ESV that I use, the English Standard Version,

  94. that's how it describes it. It says, after these things.

  95. To me, that's a poor translation.

  96. They got it wrong.

  97. Because in the Hebrew, it says,

  98. in the fullness of time.

  99. This is more than just another chronological event.

  100. This is in God's timing.

  101. It's a divine appointment.

  102. And when Abraham's life was ready for God's test,

  103. God allowed it.

  104. It's like when Christ said,

  105. the hour is at hand.

  106. It's like in Luke 9 31

  107. when he says,

  108. he set his face towards Jerusalem.

  109. It was time

  110. to endure

  111. the last week of Christ

  112. at that point.

  113. And when Jesus knew

  114. there with the disciples,

  115. the time was up.

  116. He said, the hour is at hand.

  117. God's time has come.

  118. In the same kind of way,

  119. when Abraham had experienced enough,

  120. when he had grown enough faith,

  121. he didn't understand it,

  122. but when he had grown enough faith,

  123. God had a test.

  124. God understood exactly

  125. where he would be,

  126. and God has a time for everything.

  127. Ecclesiastes 3 lists many.

  128. I'll give you an example

  129. in the very beginning of it.

  130. It says, Ecclesiastes 3 verse 1

    Ecclesiastes 3:1

  131. says,

  132. there is an appointed time

  133. for everything,

  134. and there is a time

  135. for every event under heaven.

  136. Therefore, the time had come

  137. for Abraham.

  138. Although we may never understand it,

  139. God has a time

  140. for everything that we experience,

  141. and his timing is always right.

  142. Does it always seem right?

  143. No, it does not seem right.

  144. And that's the problem.

  145. We don't look forward to the test.

  146. I've never liked the test,

  147. nor the timing of them.

  148. God's tests are unexpected.

  149. What we see is limited,

  150. and what he allows is unexpected,

  151. but God sees it all the time.

  152. Therefore, you can rest in his judgment

  153. and know that what happens to us

  154. is in his time.

  155. Has the rug been ripped out from under you?

  156. I promise you,

  157. God's still on the throne,

  158. and it's in his timing.

  159. The other thing is this.

  160. I wish I could sugarcoat this,

  161. but I can't.

  162. The tests of God are difficult.

  163. They're difficult.

  164. Now, I want you to understand,

  165. a test of God is not a temptation.

  166. God does not tempt.

  167. James 1, verse 13 through 15 says,

    James 1:13–15

  168. Let no one,

  169. when he is tempted,

  170. say,

  171. I am being tempted by God.

  172. For God cannot be tempted with evil.

  173. For God cannot be tempted with evil,

  174. and he himself tempts no one.

  175. But each person is tempted

  176. when he is lured

  177. and enticed

  178. by his own desire.

  179. Then desire,

  180. when it is conceived,

  181. gives birth to sin,

  182. and sin,

  183. when it is fully grown,

  184. brings forth death.

  185. Tempting is what we walk into.

  186. Ushered along by the evil one,

  187. God does not do that.

  188. If you wonder,

  189. there are two differences

  190. between a test of God

  191. and a temptation.

  192. One is,

  193. we lead ourselves into temptation.

  194. God don't lead us into temptation.

  195. We lead ourselves in that.

  196. That scripture tells us that.

  197. When we are caught up

  198. and lured

  199. and enticed

  200. by our own desires,

  201. God leads us into a test.

  202. Second thing is,

  203. tempting involves evil.

  204. Testing is different.

  205. I want you to notice in verse 2,

  206. it says,

  207. Your only son

  208. whom you love.

  209. Now,

  210. if you've been following along

  211. and tracking us

  212. for these last few weeks,

  213. you know that's not his only son.

  214. He's got another son

  215. with Hagar,

  216. his maidservant.

  217. When his wife

  218. could not have a child,

  219. they took alternative means,

  220. which was

  221. not what God had in store,

  222. and Ishmael was born.

  223. God doesn't mission to Ishmael.

  224. Ishmael is

  225. his first son,

  226. but God speaks

  227. as if he does not exist

  228. because Isaac

  229. was the son

  230. of promise.

  231. Isaac was the son

  232. that Abraham

  233. had been waiting on.

  234. And I want you

  235. to get the weight of this.

  236. Isaac is the one

  237. that all of God's promises

  238. were based on.

  239. Everything we know,

  240. even the childhood song

  241. we sing,

  242. Father Abraham

  243. had many sons

  244. and many sons of him.

  245. It all came back

  246. to Isaac.

  247. The nation of Israel

  248. would come through

  249. that bloodline.

  250. All of Abraham's future,

  251. his heritage,

  252. his legacy,

  253. were held

  254. in the life

  255. of Isaac.

  256. Isaac,

  257. he looked

  258. to the birth

  259. of his son

  260. for decades,

  261. yet he was

  262. a hundred years old

  263. before his boy

  264. was born.

  265. And now God

  266. speaks

  267. of Isaac.

  268. And when God

  269. spoke of Isaac,

  270. he spoke of

  271. Abraham's

  272. everything.

  273. It's tough.

  274. It is the things

  275. that we love

  276. that God

  277. will often

  278. ask us

  279. to put

  280. on the altar

  281. of sacrifice.

  282. Now I want you

  283. to hear me.

  284. That don't mean

  285. he's going to take it.

  286. Whether he takes it

  287. or not,

  288. we walk away

  289. with it

  290. in its proper place.

  291. It's his.

  292. By the way,

  293. it was his

  294. to start with.

  295. But it has

  296. to register

  297. with us.

  298. It's his.

  299. Whatever it is.

  300. When you put

  301. what you love

  302. on the altar

  303. of sacrifice,

  304. whether God

  305. takes it

  306. or not,

  307. it's his.

  308. And that

  309. is the proper

  310. perspective

  311. that we are

  312. to have

  313. about our stuff.

  314. About what's

  315. ours.

  316. Remember,

  317. God does not

  318. give us tests

  319. to see where

  320. we are.

  321. He knows

  322. that.

  323. He gives

  324. us tests

  325. so that

  326. we can see

  327. where we are.

  328. Tests are tough.

  329. They're tough.

  330. Third thing

  331. is this.

  332. The test

  333. of God

  334. demand

  335. obedience.

  336. There are

  337. two signs

  338. of Abraham's

  339. sure obedience

  340. here.

  341. First is

  342. how he

  343. obeyed.

  344. I want you

  345. to notice

  346. he went

  347. when God

  348. told him

  349. to.

  350. Verse 3

  351. says,

  352. so Abraham,

  353. let me give you

  354. the context.

  355. take your

  356. son,

  357. your only

  358. son whom

  359. you love

  360. and go

  361. to the

  362. land of

  363. Moriah

  364. and offer

  365. him there

  366. as a

  367. burnt

  368. offering

  369. on one

  370. of the

  371. mountains

  372. of which

  373. I shall

  374. tell you.

  375. That's

  376. verse 2

  377. of Genesis

  378. 22.

  379. Verse 3

  380. begins,

  381. so Abraham

  382. rose early.

  383. He didn't

  384. even wait

  385. until mid

  386. morning.

  387. He got

  388. up.

  389. He got

  390. up and

  391. got after

  392. it.

  393. I think

  394. that's

  395. significant.

  396. It does

  397. not speak

  398. of a

  399. struggle

  400. with going

  401. when God

  402. told him

  403. to go.

  404. Did the

  405. Bible leave

  406. that struggle

  407. out?

  408. I don't

  409. believe it

  410. did because

  411. the Bible

  412. speaks of

  413. his struggle

  414. watching Sodom

  415. burn and

  416. the difficulty

  417. of that.

  418. He did

  419. struggle there

  420. but he does

  421. not struggle

  422. here.

  423. He just

  424. went because

  425. he knew he

  426. could trust

  427. God.

  428. And I'm

  429. telling you

  430. folks,

  431. just trust

  432. God.

  433. Go with

  434. the Lord

  435. and trust

  436. him.

  437. As you

  438. pray,

  439. you can

  440. question.

  441. As you

  442. go,

  443. you can

  444. pray.

  445. And as

  446. you pray,

  447. you can

  448. question.

  449. Whatever,

  450. but move

  451. in the

  452. direction of

  453. obedience for

  454. God.

  455. He went to

  456. the place

  457. where God

  458. had told

  459. him.

  460. And by

  461. the way,

  462. when he

  463. started,

  464. God hadn't

  465. yet told

  466. him where

  467. exactly he

  468. was supposed

  469. to go.

  470. He learned

  471. along the

  472. journey.

  473. I'm a

  474. planner.

  475. I can

  476. ruin a

  477. vacation.

  478. Okay?

  479. A couple

  480. of years

  481. ago,

  482. right,

  483. when things

  484. were coming

  485. out of

  486. COVID,

  487. but yet

  488. people were

  489. wanting you

  490. to travel

  491. and all

  492. that stuff,

  493. I watched

  494. a movie

  495. about South

  496. Dakota and

  497. that area,

  498. and I

  499. wanted to

  500. go.

  501. And I

  502. wanted to

  503. hit it

  504. before

  505. everybody

  506. else

  507. hit it.

  508. And so

  509. as soon

  510. as school

  511. was over,

  512. I booked

  513. us a

  514. trip where

  515. we would

  516. see all

  517. of the

  518. Northwest

  519. in about

  520. four days.

  521. I was

  522. a test

  523. to see

  524. if my

  525. family would

  526. stay together

  527. through the

  528. trip.

  529. We'd be

  530. scattered

  531. throughout

  532. the West.

  533. I think

  534. we was

  535. going to

  536. book about

  537. 400 miles

  538. a day.

  539. Look.

  540. Look.

  541. But

  542. Millie was

  543. graduating

  544. from the

  545. eighth grade,

  546. and I

  547. found out

  548. late in

  549. the process

  550. that there

  551. was an

  552. eighth grade

  553. graduation.

  554. So much

  555. to my

  556. chagrin,

  557. because nobody

  558. wanted to

  559. go but me

  560. anyway.

  561. I told

  562. Millie,

  563. I said,

  564. listen,

  565. your gift

  566. for getting

  567. out of

  568. the eighth

  569. grade is

  570. to get

  571. out of

  572. middle

  573. school and

  574. go to

  575. high school.

  576. And that's

  577. it.

  578. We ought

  579. to be

  580. in the

  581. West.

  582. But I

  583. went

  584. begrudgingly

  585. and I

  586. canceled

  587. all my

  588. plans.

  589. I love

  590. to plan.

  591. I love

  592. to plan

  593. it out

  594. and know

  595. what the

  596. deal is.

  597. But the

  598. reality is

  599. you can't

  600. plan out

  601. the test

  602. of God.

  603. You got

  604. to trust

  605. him.

  606. You got

  607. to move

  608. and trust

  609. him along

  610. the way.

  611. Not only

  612. did he go

  613. when God

  614. told him

  615. to go,

  616. but he

  617. went where

  618. God told

  619. him to

  620. go.

  621. He went

  622. to the

  623. place where

  624. God had

  625. told him.

  626. It was

  627. not easy.

  628. It was

  629. three days

  630. away.

  631. It was

  632. not a

  633. long

  634. journey.

  635. But I'm

  636. telling you

  637. with what

  638. was going

  639. on,

  640. it was

  641. a long

  642. journey.

  643. Can you

  644. imagine the

  645. pondering on

  646. that trip?

  647. Scripture

  648. also tells

  649. us why

  650. he obeyed.

  651. Verse 12

  652. says,

  653. God said,

  654. do not lay

  655. your hand

  656. on the

  657. boy or

  658. do anything

  659. to him.

  660. For now

  661. I know

  662. that you

  663. fear God

  664. seeing you

  665. have not

  666. withheld

  667. your son,

  668. your only

  669. son,

  670. from me.

  671. He feared

  672. God.

  673. Now,

  674. I want you

  675. to understand

  676. there's two

  677. types of

  678. fear,

  679. at least

  680. two types.

  681. There's a

  682. phobia kind

  683. of fear,

  684. an irrational

  685. fear,

  686. the kind

  687. of fear

  688. that I

  689. have for

  690. snakes,

  691. for instance,

  692. okay?

  693. I may run

  694. a fit,

  695. but I ain't

  696. going to

  697. handle a

  698. snake,

  699. I can

  700. tell you

  701. that.

  702. And I've

  703. always had

  704. this sick

  705. fascination

  706. with snakes.

  707. I mean,

  708. that's my

  709. favorite part

  710. of the zoo

  711. to go to,

  712. to watch

  713. and to look

  714. and all that

  715. stuff.

  716. However,

  717. if there

  718. was one

  719. on this

  720. stage,

  721. I wouldn't

  722. be on

  723. this

  724. stage.

  725. When I

  726. was growing

  727. up,

  728. there was

  729. a creek

  730. that went

  731. through our

  732. neighborhood

  733. and there

  734. was a

  735. bush that

  736. hung over

  737. that creek

  738. and one

  739. day I

  740. was down

  741. the creek

  742. and I

  743. saw a

  744. snake in

  745. that bush.

  746. Another

  747. day I

  748. saw another

  749. snake in

  750. that bush.

  751. Some

  752. days I

  753. saw two

  754. snakes in

  755. that bush.

  756. So I

  757. got fascinated

  758. with seeing

  759. them and

  760. scared and

  761. all that

  762. stuff.

  763. One day

  764. I went

  765. down there

  766. and looked

  767. and the

  768. snakes were

  769. green and

  770. so they

  771. matched the

  772. bush.

  773. It was

  774. hard to

  775. see and

  776. I didn't

  777. see any.

  778. So dejected

  779. and somewhat

  780. glad, as

  781. weird as that

  782. is, I

  783. started home

  784. and all of a

  785. sudden I

  786. looked down

  787. and on this

  788. little rock

  789. was a

  790. little snake,

  791. a little

  792. brown snake

  793. sunning,

  794. about that

  795. long.

  796. By the time

  797. I looked at

  798. him, he

  799. had his head

  800. raised up

  801. and his

  802. tongue out

  803. and I

  804. started running.

  805. I lived

  806. about a

  807. quarter of a

  808. mile away

  809. and I ran

  810. all the way

  811. home, worried

  812. that snake

  813. was chasing

  814. me down the

  815. road.

  816. I have an

  817. irrational fear

  818. of it, okay?

  819. That's not the

  820. fear this is

  821. talking about.

  822. The other

  823. kind of fear

  824. is a fear

  825. of respect.

  826. This has

  827. more to do

  828. with the

  829. character of

  830. the one

  831. respected

  832. than it

  833. does the

  834. one doing

  835. the

  836. respecting.

  837. It's not

  838. a fear of

  839. punishment.

  840. It's a

  841. fear of

  842. reverence.

  843. My dad's a

  844. whistler.

  845. He'd work in

  846. the garage and

  847. he had one of

  848. those big

  849. tube radios

  850. where it had

  851. to warm up

  852. when you hit

  853. the button.

  854. And he

  855. played

  856. instrumental

  857. music,

  858. elevator music

  859. out there

  860. and he'd

  861. whistle to

  862. it while he

  863. was out there

  864. working.

  865. But he also

  866. had another

  867. whistle that

  868. was somewhat

  869. legendary and

  870. that was the

  871. come home

  872. whistle.

  873. And when he

  874. wanted his

  875. boys to come

  876. home he'd

  877. walk outside

  878. and he'd

  879. whistle.

  880. And when

  881. dad whistled

  882. it was time

  883. to come home.

  884. one time I

  885. know as

  886. the bird

  887. flies that I

  888. was over a

  889. half a mile

  890. away from

  891. him and I

  892. heard him

  893. whistle.

  894. And the

  895. moment I

  896. heard him

  897. whistle I

  898. commenced

  899. running.

  900. Jumping

  901. creeks,

  902. running through

  903. woods.

  904. I commenced

  905. running because

  906. I wanted to

  907. get home and

  908. beat the

  909. dreaded second

  910. whistle.

  911. I'm just

  912. going to be

  913. honest with

  914. you.

  915. I don't

  916. ever remember

  917. being punished

  918. for not

  919. coming home.

  920. I never

  921. remember being

  922. scolded for

  923. not coming

  924. home.

  925. I don't

  926. ever remember

  927. not coming

  928. home when I

  929. was called.

  930. I just knew

  931. to come.

  932. My dad

  933. expected me.

  934. my father

  935. never asked

  936. much of me.

  937. He never

  938. does.

  939. But when he

  940. has I've

  941. tried to

  942. deliver.

  943. And supper

  944. was ready.

  945. And it was

  946. time to come

  947. home.

  948. And I had a

  949. fear of him.

  950. I didn't fear

  951. what he would

  952. do.

  953. I didn't fear

  954. what he

  955. wouldn't do.

  956. I just knew

  957. what he

  958. wanted.

  959. And I

  960. respected him.

  961. The test

  962. of God

  963. demand

  964. obedience.

  965. And Abraham

  966. heard the

  967. whistle of

  968. God and

  969. he knew

  970. to obey.

  971. the test

  972. of God

  973. also

  974. demand

  975. faith.

  976. They demand

  977. faith.

  978. Abraham knew

  979. whatever God

  980. would ask he

  981. would trust

  982. him.

  983. How?

  984. Because he

  985. walked with

  986. God.

  987. And when you

  988. walk with

  989. folks you know

  990. whether you

  991. can trust

  992. them or not.

  993. You learn

  994. them.

  995. And he had

  996. learned God.

  997. He had lived

  998. with him and

  999. he knew him

  1000. and so he

  1001. could trust

  1002. him.

  1003. There are

  1004. two sure

  1005. signs of

  1006. that.

  1007. The first

  1008. one is seen

  1009. in verses

  1010. four and

  1011. five.

  1012. When it

  1013. says on

  1014. the third

  1015. day Abraham

  1016. lifted up

  1017. his eyes

  1018. and saw

  1019. the place

  1020. from afar

  1021. and then

  1022. Abraham said

  1023. to his

  1024. young men

  1025. get this

  1026. now.

  1027. Stay here

  1028. with the

  1029. donkey.

  1030. I and

  1031. the boy

  1032. will go

  1033. over there

  1034. and worship

  1035. and come

  1036. again to

  1037. you.

  1038. Did you

  1039. catch that?

  1040. He knew

  1041. they would

  1042. worship and

  1043. he knew

  1044. they would

  1045. come back.

  1046. He

  1047. didn't

  1048. doubt

  1049. God

  1050. would

  1051. somehow

  1052. take

  1053. care

  1054. of

  1055. the

  1056. matter

  1057. and

  1058. chapter

  1059. 11

  1060. verse 17

  1061. through 19

  1062. gives us

  1063. insight into

  1064. how he

  1065. thought it

  1066. would be

  1067. handled.

  1068. It says

  1069. by faith

  1070. Abraham

  1071. when he

  1072. was tested

  1073. offered up

  1074. Isaac

  1075. and he

  1076. who had

  1077. received

  1078. the promises

  1079. was in

  1080. the act

  1081. of offering

  1082. up his

  1083. only son

  1084. of whom

  1085. he

  1086. was said

  1087. through

  1088. Isaac

  1089. shall

  1090. your

  1091. offspring

  1092. be

  1093. named.

  1094. He

  1095. considered

  1096. that God

  1097. was able

  1098. even to

  1099. raise him

  1100. from the

  1101. dead

  1102. from which

  1103. figuratively

  1104. speaking

  1105. he did

  1106. receive him

  1107. back.

  1108. He gave

  1109. up Isaac

  1110. and God

  1111. gave him

  1112. back.

  1113. He trusted

  1114. that his

  1115. willingness to

  1116. sacrifice to

  1117. God would

  1118. lead to

  1119. worship and

  1120. that is

  1121. exactly what

  1122. happened and

  1123. he knew

  1124. God was

  1125. at work

  1126. before he

  1127. ever went

  1128. up that

  1129. mountain.

  1130. He trusted

  1131. God with

  1132. that because

  1133. God will

  1134. provide.

  1135. I can

  1136. promise you

  1137. as well

  1138. in every

  1139. test God

  1140. will provide

  1141. and when

  1142. God provides

  1143. it will

  1144. change

  1145. your

  1146. worship.

  1147. When you

  1148. see God

  1149. come through

  1150. it will

  1151. change

  1152. your

  1153. worship.

  1154. Verse 13

  1155. and 14

  1156. tell us

  1157. that just

  1158. as Abraham

  1159. had said

  1160. God provided

  1161. and it was

  1162. time to

  1163. worship.

  1164. Our job

  1165. is to

  1166. obey.

  1167. God's job

  1168. is to

  1169. provide and

  1170. when we

  1171. choose not

  1172. to obey

  1173. we try to

  1174. go our

  1175. own way

  1176. and when

  1177. we obey

  1178. we don't

  1179. go our

  1180. own way

  1181. we trust

  1182. him.

  1183. You may

  1184. not like

  1185. the experience

  1186. of a test

  1187. but the

  1188. benefit of

  1189. God's test

  1190. outweigh the

  1191. agony I

  1192. can promise

  1193. you and

  1194. in that

  1195. we are

  1196. changed.

  1197. Lastly

  1198. the test

  1199. of God

  1200. are

  1201. blessed.

  1202. Sure

  1203. don't feel

  1204. like it in

  1205. the middle

  1206. of it.

  1207. I can't

  1208. explain to

  1209. you how

  1210. God will

  1211. bless you

  1212. through your

  1213. trials and

  1214. through your

  1215. test.

  1216. That may

  1217. be some of

  1218. the most

  1219. distinct

  1220. differences

  1221. that you

  1222. will ever

  1223. hear in

  1224. people's

  1225. testimony

  1226. when they

  1227. talk about

  1228. how God

  1229. came through

  1230. for them.

  1231. God is

  1232. an individual

  1233. God that

  1234. gives us

  1235. what we

  1236. need whether

  1237. we know

  1238. what it

  1239. is or

  1240. not.

  1241. But let

  1242. me tell

  1243. you three

  1244. ways that

  1245. God

  1246. blessed

  1247. Abraham.

  1248. Three blessings

  1249. and I'll

  1250. close.

  1251. Three blessings

  1252. that I want

  1253. you to see

  1254. about Abraham.

  1255. One is

  1256. he walked

  1257. away from

  1258. this with

  1259. an even

  1260. stronger

  1261. commitment to

  1262. God than

  1263. he had

  1264. before.

  1265. I want you

  1266. to notice

  1267. something.

  1268. God never

  1269. wondered how

  1270. Abraham would

  1271. respond.

  1272. God knew it.

  1273. Why?

  1274. Because he's

  1275. omniscient.

  1276. He knows

  1277. all things.

  1278. But now

  1279. Abraham would

  1280. never question

  1281. his own

  1282. level of

  1283. obedience

  1284. again.

  1285. He knew

  1286. that he

  1287. could and

  1288. he knew

  1289. that he

  1290. would trust

  1291. God.

  1292. Makes a

  1293. world of

  1294. difference.

  1295. Second thing

  1296. is this.

  1297. What he

  1298. had now

  1299. was the

  1300. Lord's.

  1301. He might

  1302. be sitting

  1303. at his

  1304. table but

  1305. he's not

  1306. his.

  1307. He's the

  1308. Lord's.

  1309. What's

  1310. God asking

  1311. of you?

  1312. Give it

  1313. over to

  1314. him.

  1315. trust him

  1316. with it.

  1317. You may

  1318. get to

  1319. keep it

  1320. but it'll

  1321. never be

  1322. yours again

  1323. once you

  1324. give it to

  1325. him.

  1326. And it's

  1327. our job

  1328. to be

  1329. stewards

  1330. of the

  1331. blessings

  1332. that God

  1333. gives to

  1334. us as

  1335. long as

  1336. he allows

  1337. us to

  1338. have them.

  1339. And one

  1340. more blessing

  1341. he got.

  1342. He knew

  1343. he did

  1344. what God

  1345. asked.

  1346. he walked

  1347. off that

  1348. mountain

  1349. knowing that

  1350. he did

  1351. exactly what

  1352. God told

  1353. him to

  1354. do.

  1355. That he

  1356. obeyed

  1357. God.

  1358. And that

  1359. makes my

  1360. friend a

  1361. world of

  1362. difference in

  1363. your life.

  1364. When you've

  1365. trusted God,

  1366. when you've

  1367. obeyed God

  1368. and just

  1369. let him have

  1370. it and

  1371. watched him

  1372. work in

  1373. the midst

  1374. of that.

  1375. it is my

  1376. goal that

  1377. I will

  1378. stand before

  1379. the Lord

  1380. one day

  1381. and he

  1382. will look

  1383. at me

  1384. and say

  1385. well done

  1386. my good

  1387. and faithful

  1388. servant.

  1389. You

  1390. obeyed.

  1391. You

  1392. trusted.

  1393. Trust

  1394. God

  1395. in your

  1396. test.

  1397. He will

  1398. not let

  1399. you down.

  1400. He's

  1401. good for

  1402. it.

  1403. With

  1404. every head

  1405. bowed and

  1406. every eye

  1407. closed, I

  1408. don't say

  1409. any of this

  1410. lightly.

  1411. Because

  1412. I walk

  1413. through valleys

  1414. with many

  1415. of you.

  1416. Many of

  1417. you I

  1418. pray for

  1419. daily.

  1420. Because I

  1421. know the

  1422. struggles that

  1423. you're going

  1424. through.

  1425. I know the

  1426. difficulties.

  1427. I'm also

  1428. well aware that

  1429. for those that

  1430. I know of,

  1431. there's that

  1432. many more

  1433. that I have

  1434. no idea

  1435. about.

  1436. Whatever

  1437. it is

  1438. that you're

  1439. facing today,

  1440. give that to

  1441. the Lord.

  1442. Give that to

  1443. the Lord.

  1444. It may be

  1445. that you've

  1446. never really

  1447. surrendered your

  1448. life to

  1449. Christ.

  1450. You've been

  1451. playing the

  1452. game or

  1453. hanging pretty

  1454. close, but

  1455. you've never

  1456. surrendered your

  1457. life to

  1458. Christ.

  1459. And the

  1460. good news

  1461. is, when

  1462. you give

  1463. love and

  1464. surrender your

  1465. life to

  1466. Christ, he

  1467. won't take it

  1468. from you, but

  1469. it'll be his.

  1470. You've never

  1471. done that and

  1472. would like

  1473. guidance in

  1474. that you

  1475. come today.

  1476. As soon as

  1477. we stand and

  1478. sing, you

  1479. come.

  1480. Maybe you

  1481. have done

  1482. that, but

  1483. you've never

  1484. acknowledged that

  1485. publicly.

  1486. It's just

  1487. something you've

  1488. done privately.

  1489. And the

  1490. first step of

  1491. obedience is to

  1492. follow him in

  1493. baptism.

  1494. Or maybe

  1495. God's leading

  1496. you to be a

  1497. part of this

  1498. fellowship.

  1499. fellowship.

  1500. You know

  1501. God's drawing

  1502. you here.

  1503. It's clear to

  1504. you.

  1505. I just

  1506. encourage you to

  1507. trust him with

  1508. that.

  1509. Or there may

  1510. be something else

  1511. in your life

  1512. that you've just

  1513. got to give over

  1514. to God.

  1515. You can do that

  1516. where you are.

1517. You can do it at

  1518. this altar.

  1519. You can do it

  1520. with a pastor

  1521. praying for you.

  1522. But today,

  1523. let's trust God.

  1524. He's worthy

  1525. to be trusted.

  1526. Lord Jesus,

  1527. lead us right

  1528. now.

  1529. Have your will

  1530. in your way

  1531. with every one

  1532. of these folks

  1533. today, dear God.

  1534. Help them to

  1535. feel the power

  1536. of your presence,

  1537. the direction

  1538. of your spirit,

  1539. and work and

  1540. move in our midst

  1541. right now,

  1542. oh God,

  1543. I pray.

  1544. In Jesus'

  1545. name,

  1546. amen.
