  1. Revelation chapter 21 this morning we're going to continue our series on the reality of eternity and

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  2. last week we spoke of the certainty of eternity it's coming whether you're ready for it or not

  3. I encourage you to be ready this week I want to talk about heaven particularly the unfathomable

  4. nature of heaven now the word unfathomable means incapable of being explored or understood

  5. impossible to measure the extent of so I'll tell you that I'm going to do my best today to describe

  6. to you some aspects of what heaven will be like but I promise you from the beginning it will not be

  7. sufficient the reality is the words of English cannot put or any other language cannot really

  8. explain to us the vast expanse of the glories of heaven but we get a glimpse of it in Revelation

  9. 21 of all places in scripture it's most clearly in Revelation 21 I want to begin to unpack that

  10. this morning it's in Revelation 21 beginning in verse 1 it says this

  11. then I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away

  12. and the sea was no more and I saw the holy city new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God

  13. prepared as a bride adorned for her husband and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying behold

  14. the dwelling place of God is with man he will dwell with them they'll be his people and God himself

  15. will be with them as their God he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more

  16. neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away

  17. and he who was seated on the throne said behold I am making all things new also he said write this down

  18. for these words are trustworthy and true and he said to me it is done I am the alpha and the omega the beginning

  19. and the end to the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment the one who

  20. conquers will have this heritage and I will be his God and he'll be my son but as for the cowardly the

  21. faithless the detestable as for murderers the sexually immoral sorcerers idolaters and all liars

  22. their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur which is the second death then came

  23. one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me saying

  24. come and I'll show you the bride the wife of the lamb and he carried me away in spirit to a great high

  25. mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God having the glory of God

  26. its radiance like a most rare jewel like a like a jasper clear as crystal it had a great high wall

  27. with 12 gates and at the gates 12 angels and on the gates the names of the 12 tribes of the sons of

  28. Israel were inscribed on the east three gates on the north three gates on the south three gates

  29. and on the west three gates and the wall of the city had 12 foundations and on them were the 12 names

  30. of the 12 apostles of the lamb and the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold measuring the

  31. city and its gates and walls the city lies four square its length the same as its width and he measured

  32. the city with his rod 12,000 stratia its length and its width and its height are equal he also measured

  33. its wall 144 cubits by human measurement which is also an angel's measurement the walls was built of

  34. jasper while the city was pure gold like clear glass the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned

  35. with every kind of jewel the first was jasper the second sapphire the third agate the fourth emerald the

  36. fifth onyx the sixth carnelian the seventh crystallite the eighth barrel the ninth topaz the tenth

  37. christophase the eleventh jason the twelfth amethyst and the 12 gates were 12 pearls each of the gates made

  38. of a single pearl and the streets of the city was pure gold like transparent glass and i saw no temple

  39. in the city for its temple is the lord god the almighty and the lamb and the city had no need of sun or moon

  40. to shine on it for the glory of god gives its light and its lamp is the lamb by its light will the nations

  41. walk and the kings of the earth be will bring their glory into it and its gates will never be shut by day

  42. there'll be no night there that will bring into the glory and the honor of the nations but nothing unclean will

  43. ever enter it nor anyone who does what is detestable or false but only those who are written in the lamb's

  44. book of life i want to share with you three things that you can look forward to but i realize that i don't

  45. have time to share you three things so i'm going to show you two of them this morning two things that

  46. heaven has this morning first one is this unforeseen beauty in that city the unforeseen beauty of that

  47. city beginning in verse 11 we get the most clear picture in this life that we can have of heaven

  48. it says the glory of god will shine in that place brighter than the sun shines here shall be the glory

  49. of god there now what exactly does that mean well we'll have to get there to find out but i can give

  50. you some examples that point to it in exodus chapter 34 verse 29 do you remember when moses went up to

    Exodus 34:29

  51. mount sinai and he went up to mount sinai and received the 10 commandments from the lord

  52. i want you to listen to what this this was like for moses as he was in the presence of god

  53. it said when moses came down from mount sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand and

  54. he came down from the mountain moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been

  55. talking with god aaron and all the people of israel saw moses and behold the skin of his face shone

  56. and they were afraid to come near him but moses called to them and aaron and all the leaders of the

  57. congregation returned to him and moses talked with them afterward all the people of israel came near

  58. and he commanded them all that the lord had spoken with him in mount sinai and when moses had finished

  59. speaking with them he put a veil over his face whenever moses went in before the lord to speak with him

  60. he would remove the veil until he came out and when he came out and told the people of israel what he

  61. was commanded the people of israel would see the face of moses that the skin of moses face was shining

  62. and moses would put the veil over his face until he went in to speak with him tell you what was

  63. happening moses was coming down covering his face because it glowed with the glory of god

  64. he had been in the presence unadulterated presence of god and from that he shone literally the glory of

  65. god let me give you another example it's in matthew chapter 17 it's at the transfiguration of jesus

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  66. we pick up a few different signs of heaven here i want to touch on one it says after six days jesus took

  67. with him peter and james and john his brother led him up a high mountain by themselves and he was

  68. transfigured before them and his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light

  69. and behold there appeared to them moses and elijah talking with them and peter said to jesus

  70. lord it is good that we are here if you wish i will make three tents here one for you and one for

  71. moses and one for elijah he was still speaking when behold a bright cloud overshadowed them

  72. and a voice from the cloud said this is my son with whom i am well pleased listen to him when the

  73. disciples heard this they fell on their faces and were terrified but jesus came and touched them and

  74. said rise and have no fear and when they lifted up their eyes they saw no one but jesus only and as

  75. they were coming down the mountain jesus commanded them tell no one the vision until the son of man is

  76. raised from the dead

  77. i'll tell you what happened on the mount mount of transfiguration they were exposed to the glory

  78. of god the glory of god is the shine of heaven his glory illuminates heaven

  79. in revelation 21 verse 12 it tells us that there's a high wall around heaven that is a powerful symbol

    Revelation 21:12

  80. because walls were built around cities for security it was not to keep people in it was to keep harm

  81. out and the point of that is heaven is an eternally secure place that there is no fear in heaven

  82. there are no locks in heaven there's gates but they're always open there is no apprehension in heaven

  83. it describes the walls of heaven as made from most precious stones all which are colorful with

  84. brilliant hues and when you see how this book is translated from the original language to english you

  85. realize that we don't have words for some of these we find something similar the word may mean blue and

  86. so they find a jewel that's blue and place that word in there it is really truly beyond our comprehension

  87. and the point is when it stacks the walls with 12 different jewels of amazement it is magnificent

  88. beauty beyond the imagination of the human eye the book of revelation is a fascinating book it is also the

  89. most abused and misused book in all the bible it is fascinating and it is controversial and there are

  90. several characteristics that mark the book let me give you two of them that are relevant relevant for what

  91. we're doing today one of them is symbolism there's a ton of symbolism in revelation symbolic images that

  92. you can pick up on what they mean by looking at the context of the rest of scripture the second thing that

  93. you'll find that characterizes revelation is numerology and a lot of people take the numerology of

  94. revelation and run with it and go crazy with it and come up with formulas and all that stuff that are not

  95. in the bible they make it up just to be honest with you sells good books though there are four numbers

  96. however that are repeatedly used in scripture if you'll look at the multiples of of what we're looking at

  97. today you'll see these numbers used again and again four of them one of them is the number three

  98. now all of these numbers mean complete they mean perfect so you help me this morning why would the number

  99. three be considered a perfect number

  100. it's because of the trinity because the three in one one in three god that we serve the trinity points

  101. to perfection points to completion the next number is the number seven now why would seven be a symbol

  102. of perfection do you know it's creation the world was created in seven days

  103. if you take the day of rest off you have the number six

  104. if you triple that number put it together three times you get six six six so if six is an evil number

  105. because you lay off the day of rest then three times more would be the number six six six for instance

  106. another perfect number that is mentioned is the is the number 10 why would 10 be significant

  107. because of the 10 commandments they represent the whole of the law they're not the whole of the law

  108. they represent the whole of the law so when you have the 10 commandments you cover the law of swords

  109. the last number and you see that quite a bit here is the number 12 and the reason why the number 12

  110. is a symbolic number that's used again and again is because all of god's people in the old testament

  111. were made up in the 12 tribes so when you include the 12 gates you include all of god's people it's a

  112. powerful symbol now today those who are in christ are god's people so what this speaks of when it speaks

  113. of the tribes it speaks of the old israel god's chosen people but when you look at the foundation of

  114. those walls you'll see there's 12 foundations and what is upon those foundations but it's about the

  115. apostles names and so you also see the newest trail which are those who are in christ you see since the

  116. cross since the cross and the carrying out of the great commission all through christ are god's chosen

  117. children we all come through christ those before christ came in the hope of christ those since christ

  118. came because of what christ did we all come through christ now if you stumble on that i want you to

  119. notice that the foundation has the names of the apostles on it which means that the message in which

  120. the apostles preached is the foundation of what heaven stands on what is that that's the gospel that's the hope

  121. that we have heaven is made up of god's people and its foundation is the message of the apostles

  122. which is the gospel in those walls are gates how many 12 gates verse 21 says in the 12 gates were 12

  123. pearls each of the gates made of a single pearl now i may make more of this than i ought to but i always had

  124. trouble as a kid when i heard people talk about people going through the pearly gates because when

  125. i heard people talk about the pearly gates what it sounded like to me was some saturday morning get

  126. together where you get a bunch of fake pearls and glue them together to come up with some ornate gate

  127. of sorts that you come through and that is not at all what it's speaking of i want you to notice that it

  128. makes the point to say that verse 21 says and the 12 gates were 12 pearls listen each of the gates made of a single pearl

  129. that is significant especially if you understand how a pearl is made a pearl is formed when a small grain

  130. of sand becomes embedded into an oyster and it begins to irritate that oyster and to soften that

  131. irritation the oyster coats that grain of sand with a smooth layer of mother of pearl is what it's called

  132. as long as it is an irritant it continues to coat it making it larger and larger and for those who are

  133. cracking open oysters looking for pearls they want a lot of irritation before they ever get to it because

  134. they want that pearl to be good size what kind of irritant would have been necessary

  135. to make pearls the size of forming gates now let me just give you an understanding here

  136. when we speak of the gates of these walls scripture says they are 144 cubits thick

  137. a cubic cubit is from the average man from his elbow to the tip of his third finger

  138. on my arm it's 18 inches and so it's safe to say that 144 cubits would at least be 200 feet

  139. the gates of the walls of heaven is described in scripture as 200 feet thick

  140. it must have been some type of irritation to make a pearl that big i mean it had to be tremendous

  141. suffering

  142. so what in the world does that mean well i believe the answer is found inside the question

  143. how can we get through the gate of heaven because of christ because of his sacrifice because his

  144. sacrifice coated over the irritant of our sin and these pearl gates represent the beauty of our entrance

  145. into heaven because of the suffering of christ that went before us not only does it talk about the gates but it says that the streets

  146. and the city are pure gold like transparent glass

  147. you ever seen gold that looked like transparent glass

  148. ladies if some fellow's trying to give you gold that looks like transparent glass i wouldn't take it

  149. okay

  150. but literally what this means is it is gold without impurity

  151. literally what this means is it describes the process of how gold is heated up and when gold is heated up

  152. impurities rise to the top and then that is removed off of that gold

  153. and therefore the better the gold you have the more impurities are removed

  154. never are all the impurities removed

  155. hopefully most have been removed

  156. however the point of it is there is no impurity in heaven

  157. therefore the appearance of the gold in heaven is like glass

  158. because all the impurities have been removed

  159. there is no impurity in heaven

  160. which means that this gold construction is transparent which is fitting

  161. because nothing is hidden in heaven

  162. and the pure gold is a treasure beyond any that this world

  163. can bring

  164. it also speaks of the size of heaven

  165. the size of heaven is identified as four square

  166. and when it's identified as four square

  167. if you take the measurements

  168. and of 12,000 stratia

  169. and you change that to our measurements today

  170. it means that heaven is 1400 miles on each side

  171. it also means that heaven is 1400 miles high

  172. 1400 miles that is from Canada to Mexico

  173. that is from the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains

  174. if you take that height

  175. because it's a cube

  176. if you take that height into consideration

  177. it would accommodate 20 billion people

  178. each having a 75 acre cube

  179. or room

  180. or mansion

  181. and the point of that is

  182. thank God

  183. there's room

  184. in heaven

  185. John 14 1 through 3 says this

  186. let not your hearts be troubled

  187. you believe in God

  188. believe also in me

  189. and my father's house are many rooms

  190. if it were not so

  191. would I have told you

  192. that I go to prepare a place for you

  193. and if I go and prepare a place for you

  194. I will come again

  195. and will take you to myself

  196. that where I am

  197. you may be also

  198. some of you do not like that translation

  199. and the reason why you don't like that translation

  200. is because they have ripped the mansion out

  201. and put a room in

  202. I often use this passage

  203. at funerals

  204. and I always

  205. read the New King James Version

  206. because

  207. I ain't about to tell people at a funeral

  208. that they're going to a room

  209. they've been waiting on a mansion

  210. all this time

  211. let me tell you why that's different

  212. it's because over the last

  213. 400 years and more

  214. we've been able to

  215. come to a better understanding

  216. of the New Testament language

  217. Kornei Greek is a dead language

  218. nobody speaks it

  219. and so

  220. what we get from it now

  221. is from archival information

  222. and the more documents

  223. that are dug up

  224. and the older the documents are

  225. that are dug up

  226. and the more you see the language used

  227. and how it is used

  228. the better understanding that you have

  229. and the reality is

  230. the word there in the Greek

  231. that was translated mansion years ago

  232. is really normally used

  233. more like a manse

  234. which would be a house

  235. or a dwelling place

  236. or even a room of sorts

  237. the point is

  238. there is room for all

  239. it goes on to tell us

  240. that there's no sun

  241. there's no star

  242. there's no night

  243. God the Father

  244. and His Son Christ are there

  245. they are all the light

  246. we need

  247. and I take you back

  248. to Matthew 17

  249. I take you back

  250. to the passage in Exodus

  251. that speaks of the shine

  252. that came from those

  253. who had just been

  254. in the presence of God

  255. not God Himself

  256. the gates are always open

  257. ready to receive more

  258. can you imagine

  259. the beauty of heaven

  260. no

  261. no you can't

  262. it is beyond

  263. anything we can comprehend

  264. we have no idea

  265. not only

  266. is there unimaginable beauty

  267. of heaven

  268. but I want you to also see

  269. this morning

  270. the unimaginable

  271. reunion with the saints

  272. the unimaginable

  273. reunion with the saints

  274. Hebrews 12 23 tells us

  275. that when we turn to God

  276. we have come

  277. to the assembly

  278. of the firstborn

  279. who are enrolled

  280. in heaven

  281. and to God

  282. the judge of all

  283. and to the spirits

  284. of the righteous

  285. made perfect

  286. I want you to hear me

  287. this morning

  288. listen

  289. if you're a child of God

  290. scripture says

  291. your name is written

  292. in the Lamb's book of life

  293. that is the way

  294. scripture puts

  295. the registration

  296. of heaven

  297. when you give your heart

  298. and life to the Lord

  299. Jesus Christ

  300. you're registered

  301. and you will not

  302. arrive late

  303. you'll be right on time

  304. God will send for you

  305. on time

  306. and when he does

  307. you will be with

  308. fellow saints of God

  309. that are already there

  310. people ask me

  311. will we know each other

  312. of course we'll know each other

  313. we'll know each other

  314. more than we do now

  315. now how do I know that

  316. well if you look back

  317. at Matthew 17

    Matthew 17:3

  318. verse 3

  319. that we looked at earlier

  320. it says in verse 3

  321. that

  322. and behold

  323. there appeared to them

  324. Moses and Elijah

  325. talking

  326. with them

  327. with Moses and Elijah

  328. talking with Christ

  329. at the Mount of Transfiguration

  330. Peter, James and John

  331. were looking on

  332. and they recognized

  333. Moses

  334. and Elijah

  335. now I want you to think

  336. about that for a moment

  337. folks

  338. Peter, James and John

  339. did not have

  340. one of those

  341. green covered Bibles

  342. that we had as a kid

  343. where you open it up

  344. when you get to the

  345. Moses passage

  346. and it shows

  347. the Charlton Heston

  348. standing in front

  349. of the burning bush

  350. they didn't have that

  351. they didn't have portraits

  352. of Moses

  353. they didn't have portraits

  354. of Elijah

  355. they don't know

  356. what them men

  357. looked like

  358. they know Elijah

  359. wore funky clothes

  360. but they don't know that

  361. but instantly

  362. they recognized them

  363. no pictures

  364. they didn't know

  365. what they looked like

  366. they had

  367. an intuitive

  368. knowledge

  369. listen

  370. when I get to glory

  371. I'm going to be thin

  372. and buff

  373. and good looking

  374. and you're still going to know

  375. who I am

  376. it's going to be amazing

  377. how?

  378. because of intuitive

  379. knowledge

  380. if Peter, James and John

  381. recognized those

  382. they had never seen

  383. don't you dare doubt

  384. that you'll not be able

  385. to recognize those

  386. that you have seen

  387. how?

  388. I don't know

  389. but I'll know then

  390. because 1 Corinthians 13

    1 Corinthians 13:12

  391. verse 12

  392. says this

  393. now we see

  394. but a poor reflection

  395. as in a mirror

  396. then we shall see

  397. face to face

  398. now I know in part

  399. then I shall know fully

  400. even as I am fully known

  401. oh my friend

  402. it will all become clear

  403. instantly

  404. when we get there

  405. until then

  406. we just see through

  407. a glass dimly

  408. George W. Truitt

  409. pastored the First Baptist Church

  410. of Dallas

  411. for half of the 20th century

  412. the first half of the 20th century

  413. somebody in the church

  414. had a baby

  415. and George W. Truitt

  416. went to the hospital

  417. to see that baby

  418. to visit that family

  419. and the father came out

  420. with the baby

  421. and when the father

  422. came out with the baby

  423. Truitt began to cry

  424. the father asked him why

  425. and Truitt said

  426. I was just thinking

  427. about your beautiful family

  428. and I realized

  429. that all of you

  430. will not be in heaven

  431. I realized

  432. that all the rest

  433. of your family

  434. will be

  435. but you won't be

  436. how sad

  437. I love to think about

  438. the glories of heaven

  439. the beauty of the city

  440. and the opportunity

  441. that we have

  442. to be

  443. in the greatest reunion

  444. that we could ever imagine

  445. thank God

  446. that for the Christian

  447. heaven will be a reunion

  448. like you've never seen

  449. let me just be blunt today

  450. what about you

  451. are you ready

  452. have you nailed

  453. your salvation down

  454. God gave us

  455. his words

  456. so that we would know

  457. John writes

  458. in both

  459. big John

  460. the gospel of John

  461. and the little John

  462. in first John

  463. he says

  464. I've written these things

  465. that you may

  466. know that you have

  467. eternal life

  468. folks I want you

  469. certain

  470. this morning

  471. has there ever been

  472. a time in your life

  473. when you've asked

  474. the Lord Jesus

  475. to come into your life

  476. and to forgive you

  477. of your sins

  478. and to cleanse you

  479. and to change you

  480. if that's never

  481. happened to you

  482. I promise you

  483. today's the day

  484. of salvation

  485. if you feel any

  486. yearning at all

  487. to come to him

  488. it's not from you

  489. it's because of him

  490. his Holy Spirit

  491. has initiated that

  492. and you have a responsibility

  493. to respond to that

  494. in obedience

  495. I'd love to guide you

  496. in that process

  497. and we're going to stand

  498. in just a moment

  499. and we're going to sing

  500. and when we do

  501. I encourage you to come

  502. say pastor I'd love

  503. to give my heart

  504. and life to the Lord

  505. Jesus Christ

  506. or maybe you have done that

  507. you've never let anybody

  508. else know that publicly

  509. I mean maybe a few

  510. in the family know

  511. or something like that

  512. but you've never publicly

  513. acknowledged that

  514. Jesus by his commission

  515. and by his example

  516. tell us

  517. that we are to acknowledge

  518. that through baptism

  519. hey

  520. and I got good news

  521. for you

  522. if you've never

  523. acknowledged that

  524. through baptism

  525. we have an opportunity

  526. in Lake Chiliwater

  527. this afternoon

  528. you have a wonderful

  529. opportunity

  530. and it's not too late

  531. I promise you

  532. if you've never

  533. acknowledged your salvation

  534. publicly through baptism

  535. you come

  536. you come

  537. whether today works out

  538. or not

  539. you come

  540. and make that right

  541. publicly

  542. before us

  543. and before the Lord

  544. maybe you're here

  545. and God's drawing you

  546. to be a part of this

  547. fellowship

  548. I'm telling you

  549. the sweetest times

  550. that Pickens First Baptist

  551. Church will ever have

  552. will only simply be

  553. a foretaste

  554. of what we have

  555. to look forward to

  556. I highly anticipate

  557. this afternoon

  558. I think we're going to

  559. have a wonderful

  560. glorious time

  561. together

  562. we're going to celebrate

  563. the birth of Christ

  564. moving and working

  565. in the lives of folks

  566. the birth of a Christian

  567. excuse me

  568. working and moving

  569. in their lives

  570. and we're going to

  571. celebrate with them

  572. I mean if one of our

  573. college football teams

  574. won a national championship

  575. we'd drive wherever

  576. we had to go

  577. fight as much traffic

  578. as we had to fight

  579. stand in whatever

  580. kind of weather

  581. we had to stand

  582. to cheer them on

  583. and it'd only be

  584. a temporary title

  585. it'd be put in some

  586. case and people

  587. could go by

  588. and look at it later

  589. those players

  590. would graduate

  591. grow old and fat

  592. like the rest of us

  593. but when somebody

  594. gives their heart

  595. and life

  596. to the Lord

  597. Jesus Christ

  598. they're forever changed

  599. for all of eternity

  600. we ought to cheer

  601. like it matters

  602. when they acknowledge

  603. that publicly

  604. we ought to be

  605. in their crowd

  606. thank God

  607. there's a great cloud

  608. of witnesses

  609. I'll talk about

  610. one morning

  611. that's also cheering

  612. us on

  613. but we have a responsibility

  614. to cheer one another on

  615. what an opportunity

  616. we have

  617. and then to eat together

  618. what a great opportunity

  619. for that

  620. but I'm telling you

  621. the sweetest reunions

  622. we ever have

  623. in this church

  624. is just a foretaste

  625. of what it's going to be like

  626. when we see them

  627. face to face

  628. God's drawing you

  629. to our congregation

  630. you come

  631. we'd love to guide you

  632. in that process

  633. God's blessing us

  634. in mighty ways

  635. God's doing a move

  636. I have no way

  637. to describe it

  638. except that God's

  639. chosen to put his hand

  640. upon us

  641. and work in us

  642. in mighty ways

  643. I thank God

  644. lives are being changed

  645. if you feel led

  646. to be a part of that

  647. you come

  648. maybe you're here

  649. this morning

  650. and there's barriers

  651. in your life

  652. that you need to lay down

  653. before the Lord

  654. you know you're a Christian

  655. but there's things

  656. in your life

  657. you're ashamed of

  658. things that you need

  659. to confess

  660. and you need to walk

  661. away from

  662. in the power

  663. of the Holy Spirit

  664. of God

  665. he gives us

  666. the strength

  667. to do that

  668. he also gives us

  669. folks to encourage

  670. us along the way

  671. I'll be happy

  672. to walk with you

  673. through your journey

  674. and encourage you

  675. along the way

  676. you just obey God

  677. as he speaks

  678. to your heart and life

  679. Lord Jesus

  680. I love you

  681. and I thank you

  682. for the opportunity

  683. you give us today

  684. to celebrate you

  685. to live for you

  686. to dedicate our lives

  687. to you dear God

  688. to publicly confess you

  689. to join in

  690. with your believers

  691. Father

  692. God help us

  693. to simply be obedient

  694. right now

  695. of exactly what

  696. you'd have us to do

  697. nothing more

  698. or nothing less

  699. bless our efforts

  700. oh God I pray

  701. in Jesus precious name

  702. Amen
