  1. Amen. That's good, man. A little special for Jimmy Buffett there.

  2. If you have a Bible, turn to Revelation 22. Revelation 22.

  3. How marvelous heaven is. It's not some made-up, unrealistic, far-fetched fantasy. It's real.

  4. Now, it's been exploited. It's been exaggerated. It's been caricatured in many ungodly and even more so unbiblical fashions.

  5. But it's time we understand as much as we can through the evaluation of Scripture what heaven is like.

  6. And we've been talking about what heaven has being the beauty and the fellowship and the worship.

  7. But did you know that heaven is missing some things?

  8. I want to share with you this morning what heaven does not have.

  9. Revelation chapter 22, beginning in verse 1, it says this.

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  10. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb

  11. through the middle of the city, also on either side of the river, the tree of life with its 12 kinds of fruit,

  12. yielding its fruit each month.

  13. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

  14. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it,

  15. and his servants will worship him.

  16. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

  17. And night will be no more.

  18. There will be no light.

  19. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light.

  20. And they will reign forever and ever.

  21. I want to deal this morning with three broad categories that encompass a lot.

  22. The first thing that heaven does not have, heaven does not have a place of worship.

  23. It does not have a place of worship.

  24. Heaven will be completely different than any place that we've ever been in any way,

  25. and in every way, including worship.

  26. In the Old Testament, after God used Moses to establish the law, the tabernacle was created.

  27. The tabernacle was a curtained courtyard with a place for sacrifice,

  28. a sacrificial place of worship in the midst of that curtained courtyard.

  29. As the Israelites would wander in the wilderness, they would uproot that tabernacle,

  30. pack it up, and take it with them,

  31. following the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night of the Lord.

  32. It was the central part of their camp.

  33. The Bible tells us strategically how God told them to camp around the tabernacle.

  34. It was literally at the center of their camp, and they would camp strategically around it.

  35. It was the place of worship.

  36. There is not one in heaven.

  37. When the Israelites settled in Jerusalem, the temple was built.

  38. It was the permanent replacement of the portable tabernacle.

  39. It was the center of Jerusalem, and it was the place of worship.

  40. But there will be no temple in heaven.

  41. In the New Testament, the churches were formed, and houses of worship were in people's homes.

  42. And as that changed over the years, they began building sanctuaries and would meet in sanctuaries.

  43. That's what we worship in today.

  44. But there are no sanctuaries in heaven.

  45. Jesus speaks and exemplifies the need for private time with the Lord.

  46. He spoke of the need of a closet of prayer.

  47. He went alone to pray, and it is necessary in order for us to maintain our relationship with God the way it needs to be

  48. for us to have a private time of prayer.

  49. Corporate prayer is valuable and is needed.

  50. Private prayer is required to get alone with God from others.

  51. But there will be no private place of worship in eternity.

  52. Hopefully, as Christians, we worship God all day long, every day, but we get serious about it when we come to the private place

  53. or when we come into this sanctuary to worship.

  54. In heaven, it will be serious worship all the time.

  55. Now, not in the sense of one long, eternal worship service.

  56. Some of you sometimes feel like you're in one, okay?

  57. But give me a break.

  58. It's not at all what it means.

  59. No, in a very real sense, we will understand and live out what 1 Corinthians 10 verse 31 says.

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  60. And 1 Corinthians 10 verse 31 says,

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  61. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

  62. Revelation chapter 3 verse 22 says that in one sense, heaven does not have a temple or a worship spot,

    Revelation 3:22

  63. but in another sense, God is the temple.

  64. The point is this.

  65. We will forever be in the unhindered, perfect, sinless presence of God.

  66. Heaven has no place of worship because it is a place of worship.

  67. Period.

  68. You think about the most glorious experience you've ever had in worship,

  69. whether that be personal or whether that be private,

  70. whether it be personal and private or whether it be public and in a corporate setting.

  71. The most powerful experience that you've ever had in worship.

  72. It is just a nibble compared to the feast of eternity.

  73. There's not a place of worship because it is a place of worship.

  74. Heaven does not have, and I don't know how else to put this,

  75. does not have an earthly atmosphere.

  76. I struggle with how to say that because it does not fit with the others on the surface,

  77. but I know of no other way to say it.

  78. Scripture goes out of the way to share with us the difference.

  79. Look at Revelation 21 verse 23 when it says this,

    Revelation 21:23

  80. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it,

  81. for the glory of God gives its light and its lamp is the Lamb.

  82. In Exodus 33 through 34, God spoke to Moses,

  83. and when God experienced the glory of God,

  84. his face was radiant by the presence of God.

  85. It glowed to such a degree that they were afraid of him,

  86. and he had to veil it.

  87. In the Gospels, the transfiguration of Christ is recorded,

  88. and when heaven came down upon Christ,

  89. his face, Matthew 17 verse 2 says,

    Matthew 17:2

  90. shone like the sun,

  91. and his clothes became as white as light.

  92. Those are the closest illustrations on earth that we have of heaven.

  93. But I want to be clear,

  94. there'll be no sun,

  95. and God will never leave the horizon,

  96. so there'll be no night.

  97. There'll be no moon,

  98. no stars as well.

  99. God will be as much in one place there

  100. as he is in the other in heaven.

  101. There will be no shadows.

  102. How do I know that?

  103. Because a shadow happens when something blocks light,

  104. and nothing will block the presence of God in glory.

  105. There'll be no evil.

  106. There'll be no night.

  107. It'll be completely secure.

  108. The strong walls of heaven speak of its security.

  109. The fact that the gates that never close are on those walls

  110. speak of the availability that we have

  111. to all come through Christ into eternity.

  112. The gate is open.

  113. But you know what?

  114. Beyond that, there'll also be no calendars in heaven.

  115. Can I get an amen?

  116. There'll be no calendars in heaven.

  117. The sun and the moon, the days and the nights

  118. help us keep time,

  119. but those things will be gone

  120. because there'll be no time.

  121. We will live in eternity.

  122. Second Peter chapter 3 verse 8 tells us this,

    2 Peter 3:8

  123. that with the day,

  124. excuse me, with the Lord,

  125. one day is as a thousand years,

  126. and a thousand years as one day.

  127. What in the world does that mean?

  128. Well, the primary purpose of saying that is

  129. you need to be patient.

  130. That's primary.

  131. Let's think deep for just a moment, okay?

  132. From time we get our chronology,

  133. our before and our after,

  134. there'll be no chronology in heaven.

  135. There'll be no keeping time.

  136. Now, how does that pan out?

  137. Think about that for a while, okay?

  138. Well, let's go back to that passage

  139. when it says that with the Lord,

  140. one day is as a thousand years,

  141. a thousand years as one day.

  142. I want to be clear about something.

  143. I don't take that literally.

  144. I don't think it's meant to be taken literally.

  145. If you have some issue with that,

  146. I'll tell you,

  147. I don't have a problem with it being literal, okay?

  148. I just don't think it is.

  149. But let's just say it is.

  150. And let's say that that is,

  151. just for a moment,

  152. just to get an idea of what we're talking about,

  153. and that describes the timing of heaven of sorts, okay?

  154. Well, if a day is like a thousand years,

  155. that means that 40 years in this life

  156. is like one hour to God in heaven.

  157. So my grandfather died in 1979.

  158. If he's not in glory, we're all in trouble, okay?

  159. He loved the Lord.

  160. That's approximately 40 years ago

  161. based upon this formula of sorts.

  162. If I die today,

  163. and I don't plan to,

  164. but don't worry about where I'm going if I do.

  165. Based on this formula,

  166. he'll get to heaven about an hour before I do.

  167. Because 40 years is like an hour.

  168. A day is like a thousand years.

  169. Charles Spurgeon died about 120 years ago.

  170. That's like three hours.

  171. Now, again, I don't take this literally.

  172. I don't mean that.

  173. But I do want you to understand

  174. that when somebody dies in the Lord,

  175. I believe to be absent from the body

  176. is to be present with the Lord.

  177. So they are there now,

  178. but we're all going to get there

  179. about the same time.

  180. And the reason why I say that

  181. is because we're talking about

  182. if there is a chronology,

  183. it's an eternal chronology.

  184. It lasts forever.

  185. But there is no sun.

  186. There is no moon.

  187. There is no way to keep time in heaven

  188. because it's always light.

  189. And so therefore,

  190. what that teaches us,

  191. it'll make your head hurt

  192. when you think about it.

  193. But the significance

  194. and where it lands is this.

  195. We'll never grow old.

  196. Don't ever worry about being bored

  197. with doing something in heaven

  198. because you did the same thing too long.

  199. It's not going to happen.

  200. There's a Christian song

  201. that I heard growing up by the title,

  202. Look For Me.

  203. And a couple in the church would sing it

  204. and they'd say,

  205. after we've been there a thousand years,

  206. a million maybe two,

  207. look for me because I'll be there too.

  208. And as a child,

  209. I thought,

  210. am I going to have to talk to these people

  211. for thousands of years?

  212. My soul.

  213. Oh, no.

  214. That's not what it'll look like.

  215. There's another old gospel hymn

  216. that kind of says what it'll be like.

  217. I think it's more appropriate.

  218. It says,

  219. When our work here is done

  220. and the life crown is won

  221. and all troubles and trials are over,

  222. all our sorrow will end

  223. and our voice will blend

  224. with the loved ones who've gone on before.

  225. Never grow old.

  226. Never grow old.

  227. In a land where we'll never grow old.

  228. Never grow old.

  229. Never grow old.

  230. In a land where we'll never grow old.

  231. If there's no sun,

  232. no sky as we know it,

  233. and there is no sin there,

  234. then there'll be no pollution.

  235. There'll be no aftertaste to the water.

  236. No chlorine is needed.

  237. Who cares about that?

  238. Okay, well, look at something with me.

  239. It's the first of what I read a little while ago.

  240. It says in Revelation 22, 1 and 2,

  241. it says this,

  242. Then the angel showed me

  243. the river of the water of life,

  244. brightest crystal,

  245. flowing from the throne of God

  246. and of the Lamb

  247. through the middle of the street of the city.

  248. Also, on either side of the river,

  249. the tree of life

  250. with its 12 kinds of fruit,

  251. yielding its fruit each month.

  252. That's fascinating to me.

  253. The leaves of the tree

  254. were for the healing of the nations.

  255. Revelation 22, verse 2,

    Revelation 22:2

  256. describes that tree

  257. that I call

  258. the fruit of the month tree.

  259. Have you ever looked at a Harry and David catalog?

  260. Best pairs in the world.

  261. Unless you grow them

  262. and then yours is the best.

  263. But I'm telling you,

  264. they are absolutely fabulous.

  265. And if you look at the back

  266. of those little catalogs,

  267. you'll see what's called

  268. the fruit of the month club.

  269. Now, I've been familiar

  270. with the fruit of the month club

  271. for years.

  272. And it's kind of fascinating to me

  273. because every month

  274. you get a box

  275. of premium fresh fruit

  276. brought to the house.

  277. And I love fruit.

  278. And so I get excited.

  279. Now, they come up,

  280. if you do 12 months,

  281. they come up with some goofy stuff,

  282. you know,

  283. guava and papaya

  284. and all that stuff.

  285. But I mean,

  286. it is fresh,

  287. real,

  288. good stuff.

  289. I mean,

  290. what a club

  291. to be a part of

  292. when they're bringing it

  293. to the house.

  294. Now, I looked that up

  295. in preparation for this

  296. and they got about

  297. 12 different clubs now.

  298. It's hard to know

  299. what they originally started with.

  300. But I remember when it was

  301. just the fruit of the month club,

  302. you know.

  303. I mean,

  304. they just bring in the stuff

  305. every month.

  306. Heaven has a tree

  307. that's even more grand.

  308. And if you think heaven's

  309. going to be a bunch

  310. of white robes

  311. roaming around

  312. a gold-plated amusement park,

  313. I got news for you.

  314. You're a long way off.

  315. My whole point,

  316. and don't get lost

  317. in my timing thing here,

  318. my whole point is

  319. it is beyond our atmosphere

  320. and it is beyond

  321. our imagination.

  322. I don't think folks

  323. that went on before us

  324. years ago

  325. are going to be ready

  326. to give us a tour of heaven.

  327. I believe they're going

  328. to be standing around

  329. the throne of God

  330. giving praise and honor

  331. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  332. That's my point.

  333. Third thing is this.

  334. Heaven does not have sin

  335. or evil

  336. or its results.

  337. The second part of that passage

  338. that I read speaks of this.

  339. It says,

  340. no longer will there be

  341. anything accursed

  342. but the throne of God

  343. and of the Lamb

  344. will be in it

  345. and His servants

  346. will worship Him.

  347. They'll see His face

  348. and His name

  349. will be on their foreheads

  350. and night will be no more.

  351. There'll be no light

  352. or lamp or sun

  353. for the Lord God

  354. will be their light

  355. and they will reign

  356. forever and ever.

  357. Do you remember the curse?

  358. when Adam and Eve sinned

  359. enmity and evil came in

  360. violence became a part of life

  361. the pain

  362. of blessing entered in

  363. even childbirth became painful

  364. after the curse.

  365. tension started in relationships

  366. thorn and thistles of the ground

  367. began the need of hard work

  368. and even death.

  369. all of that happened

  370. due to the curse

  371. none of which

  372. will be in heaven.

  373. But not only that

  374. the ramifications of sin

  375. and of sickness

  376. and of struggle

  377. and of tension

  378. and of death

  379. none of that will be there.

  380. Revelation 21 3 and 4

  381. tells us that Christ

  382. Christ is our comforter

  383. our prince of peace

  384. and He'll be there.

  385. It says there'll be no tears

  386. I believe that's what you read

  387. a little while ago

  388. there'll be no tears

  389. there'll be no pain

  390. there'll be no death

  391. there'll be no mourning

  392. there'll be no loneliness

  393. there'll be no defeat

  394. there'll be no dejection

  395. there'll be no depression

  396. there'll be no confession of sin

  397. because there'll be no sin.

  398. Has your heart ever broke

  399. before God due to your sin?

  400. If your heart has never broke

  401. before God due to sin

  402. it needs to break

  403. before God due to sin

  404. but it will not in glory.

  405. There'll be no separation by death

  406. no broken relationships

  407. no jealousy

  408. no enmity

  409. no envy

  410. no hatred

  411. not only will the atmosphere

  412. be radiant

  413. but the atmosphere

  414. will be too.

  415. Revelation 21 1 says

  416. then I saw a new heaven

  417. and a new earth

  418. from the first heaven

  419. and the first earth

  420. had passed away

  421. and the sea

  422. was no more.

  423. Why in the world

  424. does it say

  425. the sea was no more?

  426. It's very significant

  427. may not be to you

  428. but it sure was

  429. to the first century Christian

  430. because the sea

  431. separated folks.

  432. There was separation there.

  433. They had seen drownings

  434. they had seen storms

  435. they didn't have

  436. the meteorological predictions

  437. that we do today

  438. so they didn't get wrong forecast.

  439. There was a fear

  440. of the sea

  441. because they knew

  442. that when they sent people

  443. out on sea

  444. sometimes they never came back.

  445. What happened to them?

  446. There's no way we can know.

  447. They didn't have sonar technology.

  448. They didn't have the capabilities

  449. to do all those things.

  450. They just knew

  451. that sometimes

  452. people would

  453. hit the sea

  454. and never return.

  455. It was fearful.

  456. That may be why

  457. the Lord repeatedly

  458. dried it up

  459. for them to cross

  460. and to worship

  461. to remove that fear

  462. from them.

  463. The sea became

  464. a symbol

  465. of sinful chaos.

  466. Many myths

  467. and legends

  468. were built

  469. around the sea.

  470. But fear

  471. of the sea

  472. was definite.

  473. It was real.

  474. When John wrote

  475. that there would be

  476. no sea

  477. he wrote

  478. from the island

  479. of Patmos

  480. in exile

  481. separated

  482. from the believers

  483. by what?

  484. By the sea.

  485. The sea

  486. represented

  487. separation

  488. and chaos

  489. and fear

  490. and in many ways

  491. the result

  492. of sin.

  493. Thank God

  494. there will be

  495. no more sea

  496. in heaven.

  497. Rest

  498. not sleep

  499. we won't need sleep

  500. we'll just be able

  501. to rest in the Lord.

  502. Now you may be

  503. like that little boy

  504. that was in the balcony

  505. of that old time church

  506. that time.

  507. Preacher was preaching

  508. a sermon like this

  509. and he said

  510. how many of you

  511. want to go to heaven

  512. tonight?

  513. hands went up

  514. all over the building

  515. that little boy

  516. didn't raise his hand

  517. how many of you

  518. want to go to heaven?

  519. Hands went up

  520. that little boy's

  521. hand didn't go up

  522. preacher looked up

  523. at that boy

  524. and said

  525. son

  526. don't you want

  527. to go to heaven?

  528. The little boy said

  529. yes sir

  530. someday

  531. but I thought

  532. she was getting

  533. up a load

  534. I love to live

  535. I don't care

  536. to die

  537. but when I do

  538. I'll be just fine

  539. what a place

  540. is waiting

  541. for us

  542. we read

  543. of a place
