  1. Thank you so much for leading us.

  2. If you have your Bibles, turn to 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  3. 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, when we think of heaven,

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  4. our curiosities run wild.

  5. And as we wonder what it'll be like,

  6. and we try to figure it out,

  7. and we have a tendency to embellish the things

  8. that we're most concerned about.

  9. Sadly, what I've noticed over the years

  10. is people focus so much on the physical beauty

  11. and the materialistic aspects

  12. that they often miss the spiritual

  13. and the worshipful reality of heaven,

  14. which is the greatest part, by the way.

  15. Heaven's not just about the walls of jewels

  16. and the streets of gold.

  17. Near as much as it is about the fulfillment of God's kingdom,

  18. about the opportunity of believers to see him face to face

  19. and to worship at the feet of Jesus.

  20. Now, we still have our curiosities,

  21. and I want to deal with one today

  22. that I often am asked,

  23. and that is, what will we be like in heaven?

  24. What will we be like in heaven?

  25. Let us never let our imagination

  26. leave the Bible

  27. and its revelations behind.

  28. The only evidence that we have of heaven on this earth

  29. is from the word of God,

  30. and it may not answer every question that we have in our mind,

  31. but it answers all we need to know.

  32. And so I want to talk this morning about

  33. what we will be like in heaven,

  34. and I hope this morning is more than just a,

  35. more than just giving you curious facts,

  36. but instead to see the Lord of heaven,

  37. to sense his glory,

  38. and to allow him to move in our individual lives.

  39. 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, beginning in verse 13,

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  40. it says,

  41. But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers,

  42. about those who are asleep,

  43. that you may grieve as others do who have no hope.

  44. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again,

  45. even so through Jesus God will bring with him

  46. those who have fallen asleep.

  47. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord

  48. that we who are alive,

  49. who are left until the coming of the Lord,

  50. will not perceive those who have fallen asleep.

  51. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven

  52. with a cry of command,

  53. with the voice of the archangel,

  54. with the sound of the trumpet of God,

  55. and the dead in Christ will rise first.

  56. Then we who are alive, who are left,

  57. will be caught up together with him in the clouds

  58. to meet the Lord in the air,

  59. and so we will always be with the Lord.

  60. And my favorite verse of this impactful passage

  61. is verse 18 when it says,

  62. Therefore, encourage one another with these words.

  63. My friend, this is not all there is.

  64. Thank God.

  65. And if you are a child of God,

  66. you have a lot to look forward to.

  67. And I want to talk about that this morning

  68. because we're describing this morning

  69. what we will be like in heaven.

  70. It is simple to explain,

  71. yet complex to understand.

  72. It's a concept that we can try to imagine,

  73. yet one that we have never seen,

  74. and one that we'll have a hard time grasping.

  75. To state simply,

  76. what will we be like in heaven?

  77. Well, we'll be perfect.

  78. We'll be perfect.

  79. Did you catch that?

  80. Do you understand that?

  81. I don't think we understand that.

  82. But the Bible helps us understand it

  83. as best as we can.

  84. There are several ways we'll be perfect in heaven.

  85. One is our salvation will be perfect.

  86. Now, salvation is made up of three processes.

  87. It begins with conversion or regeneration.

  88. That's when we give our hearts and lives

  89. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  90. When we surrender our lives to follow Him.

  91. We convert from running our own lives

  92. down the wide wrong path,

  93. as Christ put it,

  94. and give all that we have over to God

  95. to walk in His less traveled right path.

  96. That is a heartfelt commitment on our behalf

  97. and a promise on His behalf.

  98. And my friend,

  99. if that has never happened to you,

  100. you have an open invitation today,

  101. not only from me,

  102. but more importantly,

  103. from the Lord Jesus Christ

  104. to surrender your life

  105. to the Lord Jesus today

  106. and allow Him

  107. to regenerate you,

  108. to convert you,

  109. as He put it,

  110. to be born again.

  111. Once that happens,

  112. the second stage of our salvation

  113. is the sanctification process.

  114. And sanctification is the process

  115. of our Christian life.

  116. It is in our salvation,

  117. we are declared holy.

  118. He has set us apart.

  119. That's what that word means.

  120. Don't mean perfect.

  121. It means set apart for His purposes.

  122. And as He sets us apart,

  123. He begins a process in our lives

  124. to help us to walk

  125. and be more like Him,

  126. to be made more holy.

  127. Chuck Swindoll wrote a book years ago

  128. called Three Steps Forward

  129. and Two Steps Back.

  130. That kind of describes the Christian life.

  131. We begin to progress

  132. and then we have setbacks in our lives.

  133. But you know,

  134. if you go three steps forward

  135. and two steps back,

  136. that's a step of progress.

  137. And the job of the sanctification,

  138. what we need to be doing

  139. in our sanctification

  140. is growing in the Lord,

  141. becoming more like Him.

  142. And then one day,

  143. there'll be glorification.

  144. Now some folks may look like

  145. they've reached glorification,

  146. but they haven't yet

  147. if you're still walking around with them, okay?

  148. And that is the perfecting

  149. of our salvation.

  150. That completes our salvation.

  151. In Romans 8, verse 30,

    Romans 8:30

  152. it tells us that

  153. whom God has justified,

  154. thank God,

  155. He's also glorified.

  156. Justify means who He's made right.

  157. That's done through conversion.

  158. The glorifying speaks of the perfecting.

  159. And it's the promise

  160. that we will be made perfect

  161. in eternity.

  162. As 1 John 3, 2 says,

  163. we shall be like Him

  164. for we shall see Him as He is.

  165. Now, as far as being perfect

  166. in our salvation,

  167. I want to make sure

  168. you know two truths today.

  169. One is,

  170. if you're here this morning,

  171. you're not there yet, okay?

  172. You are not perfect

  173. in your salvation.

  174. Don't pretend to be.

  175. We know better, okay?

  176. Preach done said it.

  177. You ain't perfect.

  178. You're not there yet.

  179. We are frail human beings

  180. in need of a Lord and Savior

  181. every day.

  182. We are not there yet.

  183. We are not perfect.

  184. The second truth,

  185. if you're a child of God today

  186. and have given your heart and life

  187. to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  188. you will be perfect.

  189. You will be.

  190. The perfecting of our salvation

  191. is the completion of our salvation,

  192. and that happens in eternity,

  193. and that only comes in eternity.

  194. If we die before the Lord returns,

  195. our souls will go to heaven.

  196. Upon His return,

  197. we'll be unified again with our bodies.

  198. That is what 1 Thessalonians 4 speaks of.

  199. However, our bodies won't be

  200. like they are here.

  201. Our bodies will be perfect.

  202. How can we know

  203. what our glorified heavenly bodies

  204. will be like?

  205. Well, there's some evidence in Scripture,

  206. some things that I've touched on

  207. in the last few weeks

  208. that I'll hit again quickly.

  209. And it comes from a few descriptions

  210. in the Bible

  211. of the post-resurrection body of Christ.

  212. Luke 24 tells us

  213. about the glorified body of Christ,

  214. that He could be touched

  215. and He could be handled.

  216. He was not merely a fathom or a ghost.

  217. In Luke 24, verse 39,

    Luke 24:39

  218. He said,

  219. See my hands, my feet?

  220. That is, I myself.

  221. Touch me and see.

  222. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones

  223. as you see that I have.

  224. He looked human.

  225. However, when He was on the road to Emmaus,

  226. they never questioned His humanity.

  227. They knew He was human,

  228. but they were slow to recognize Him.

  229. They didn't quite recognize Him.

  230. In that glorified body,

  231. He ate real food with His friends.

  232. Yet He passed through solid walls

  233. or through a locked door.

  234. Hello?

  235. It's a little different.

  236. He could appear in ways

  237. in which His identity

  238. was not immediately known.

  239. He could suddenly appear

  240. and disappear out of nowhere.

  241. We see no evidence of that

  242. in the Gospels before the resurrected body.

  243. And He ascended into heaven

  244. in bodily form.

  245. And my friend,

  246. that is as close on earth

  247. as we can understand

  248. of our heavenly existence.

  249. Now, how much of that applies

  250. to us and our future?

  251. I don't know.

  252. Let's be honest with you.

  253. I don't know.

  254. But Paul said this.

  255. In Philippians chapter 3, verse 21,

    Philippians 3:21

  256. he says this.

  257. But our citizenship is in heaven.

  258. And from it,

  259. we await a Savior,

  260. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  261. who will transform our lowly body.

  262. How many of you feel like

  263. you got a lowly?

  264. No, you don't have to say it.

  265. Will transform our lowly body

  266. to be like his glorious body

  267. by the power that enables him

  268. even to subject all things

  269. to himself.

  270. In 2 Corinthians 5, verse 1,

    2 Corinthians 5:1

  271. Paul calls our body

  272. an earthly tent,

  273. but shares that we will have

  274. an eternal house in heaven,

  275. not built by human hands.

  276. And I want you to listen

  277. to this passage.

  278. It's in 1 Thessalonians chapter 15.

  279. It's 42 through 44

  280. and 50 through 57.

  281. Listen to this.

  282. So it is with the resurrection

  283. of the dead.

  284. What is sown is perishable.

  285. That means what you put

  286. in the ground when you die.

  287. What is raised is imperishable.

  288. It is sown in dishonor.

  289. It is raised in glory.

  290. It is sown in weakness.

  291. It is raised in power.

  292. It is sown a natural body.

  293. It is raised a spiritual body.

  294. If there is a natural body,

  295. there's also a spiritual body.

  296. He goes on to say in verse 50,

  297. I tell you, brothers,

  298. flesh and blood cannot inherit

  299. the kingdom of God,

  300. nor does the perishable

  301. inherit the imperishable.

  302. Behold, I tell you a mystery.

  303. We shall not all sleep,

  304. but we shall all be changed.

  305. Now let me clarify something real quick,

  306. okay?

  307. Because he refers to this sleep

  308. a couple of times.

  309. Do not believe that when somebody dies,

  310. that their soul rests with that body

  311. that you put in the casket

  312. and that you put that body and soul

  313. in the ground.

  314. No, no.

  315. The body lays there for a time.

  316. But the soul is in the presence of the Lord.

  317. The apostle Paul said to be absent from the body

  318. is to be present with the Lord.

  319. I'll give you further evidence in future days

  320. about the instantaneous nature.

  321. As I called it a few weeks ago,

  322. one minute after you die,

  323. and I'm just giving you about 59 seconds of grace

  324. because I really believe that when your eyes close in death,

  325. they'll open in eternity,

  326. whatever that may mean for you.

  327. So the reality is,

  328. when he says sleep here,

  329. don't ever believe that one that passes away is sleep.

  330. They're not talking about the soul.

  331. Soul sleep is a heresy.

  332. Not at all.

  333. It's that body that's resting there.

  334. But he says, listen,

  335. we shall not all sleep.

  336. We shall all be changed.

  337. Because in a moment,

  338. in the twinkling of an eye,

  339. at the last trumpet,

  340. for the trumpet will sound

  341. and the dead will be raised imperishable,

  342. and we shall be changed.

  343. For this perishable body

  344. must put on the imperishable,

  345. and this mortal body put on immortality.

  346. But thanks be to God

  347. who gives us the victory

  348. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  349. Thank God

  350. that he takes care of us

  351. and will provide for us

  352. and gives us

  353. the victory.

  354. Our bodies will be

  355. made perfect.

  356. Not only that,

  357. but our minds will be

  358. perfect.

  359. Our minds will be perfect.

  360. In 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 13:12

  361. chapter 13,

  362. verse 12,

  363. Paul put it

  364. so well,

  365. he said for this,

  366. for now we see

  367. in a mirror dimly,

  368. but then face to face.

  369. Now I know in part,

  370. but then I shall know fully,

  371. even as I am fully

  372. known.

  373. Now when it says

  374. that

  375. we will know fully,

  376. I don't believe that's

  377. speaking of

  378. perfect omniscience.

  379. I believe that's what it speaks of,

  380. because I believe there's evidence

  381. of other ways.

  382. And let me assure you,

  383. you will not turn into gods,

  384. as some cults

  385. say you will.

  386. It does mean

  387. that we'll know things

  388. on a much more

  389. comprehensive level

  390. than we do here.

  391. In other words,

  392. our minds will be

  393. as complete

  394. as we could ever

  395. desire.

  396. Therefore,

  397. the questions that you have

  398. about heaven,

  399. if you ever say,

  400. you know,

  401. when I die

  402. and I get to heaven,

  403. I'm going to ask,

  404. let me tell you

  405. my personal opinion.

  406. No, you ain't.

  407. No, you ain't.

  408. You're going to be so caught up

  409. in the atmosphere

  410. of being in the presence

  411. of the Lord,

  412. I believe the questions

  413. that are digging

  414. at you today

  415. will be answered

  416. instantaneously.

  417. I believe you'll

  418. know.

  419. I believe the questions

  420. you have about this life

  421. that sometimes nobody

  422. can answer for you.

  423. I believe if you're

  424. a child of God

  425. and you die

  426. in the Lord instantly,

  427. there'll be answered.

  428. There'll be no more ums.

  429. There'll be no more confusion.

  430. There'll be no more

  431. forgetting,

  432. no more ignorance,

  433. no more needing

  434. to walk by faith.

  435. Hello?

  436. We'll know it then.

  437. We'll walk by sight.

  438. Our minds will be

  439. made perfect.

  440. The fourth thing is

  441. our love

  442. will be perfect.

  443. If I told you

  444. I had seven points

  445. this morning,

  446. when I started

  447. it had scared you to death.

  448. But we more than

  449. halfway there.

  450. Our love

  451. will be perfect.

  452. Now when we look

  453. at 1 Corinthians 13

  454. we see a pattern

  455. of love to live by.

  456. However,

  457. we cannot fulfill

  458. that completely.

  459. It is the goal

  460. to set forth.

  461. We should not

  462. forgive our,

  463. we should not

  464. excuse ourselves

  465. from some that

  466. we're not so good at.

  467. We ought to work

  468. harder at it.

  469. Do more for it.

  470. However,

  471. we won't fulfill

  472. it completely.

  473. Much like the

  474. examples of Christ

  475. in our lives,

  476. we won't fulfill

  477. those things.

  478. 1 Corinthians 13

  479. 13 closes out

  480. the love chapter

  481. saying this,

  482. Now faith,

  483. hope,

  484. and love

  485. abide.

  486. These three,

  487. but the greatest

  488. of these

  489. is love.

  490. love.

  491. Why is love

  492. the greatest

  493. of that?

  494. Because it's

  495. the one

  496. that is eternal

  497. that's there.

  498. Because you see,

  499. our faith

  500. will be fulfilled

  501. when we see

  502. Him face to face.

  503. Our hope

  504. will be met.

  505. Our love

  506. will be made

  507. complete

  508. and be

  509. perfect.

  510. Thank God.

  511. Our love

  512. will be perfect.

  513. Fifth thing

  514. is our

  515. joy

  516. will be

  517. perfect.

  518. The Christian

  519. has the opportunity

  520. in this life

  521. to live

  522. in the joy

  523. of the Lord.

  524. However,

  525. that joy

  526. is not

  527. perfect.

  528. That joy

  529. is not

  530. perfect.

  531. Sin,

  532. sorrow,

  533. discouragement,

  534. loss,

  535. worry,

  536. all that stuff

  537. gets in the way.

  538. But that

  539. will not be

  540. the case,

  541. thank God,

  542. in eternity.

  543. in the account

  544. of the beggar

  545. Lazarus.

  546. There's a couple

  547. of Lazarus

  548. in scripture.

  549. The account

  550. of the beggar

  551. Lazarus,

  552. he was comforted

  553. when he went

  554. to heaven

  555. after he lived

  556. a tough life

  557. on earth.

  558. And in the same

  559. way,

  560. thank God,

  561. there'll be no

  562. more sin,

  563. there'll be no

  564. more sorrow,

  565. there'll be no

  566. more discouragement,

  567. there'll be no

  568. more worry.

  569. Matthew 25

    Matthew 25:23

  570. verse 23

  571. says that we

  572. will be invited

  573. to come and

  574. share our

  575. master's happiness.

  576. In other words,

  577. we will be

  578. welcomed into

  579. the joy

  580. of the Lord.

  581. Our joy

  582. will be perfect.

  583. Now I think

  584. you ought to

  585. practice that

  586. here,

  587. okay?

  588. But it ain't

  589. going to be

  590. perfect

  591. until we see

  592. him face to

  593. face.

  594. Listen,

  595. our relationships

  596. will be

  597. perfect.

  598. Not only

  599. will the

  600. relationships

  601. that we know

  602. on earth

  603. be enhanced

  604. by sinlessness,

  605. but we'll

  606. know those

  607. in heaven

  608. that we

  609. didn't know

  610. on earth.

  611. If Peter,

  612. James,

  613. and John

  614. recognize

  615. Moses and

  616. Elijah at

  617. the

  618. transfiguration,

  619. if Lazarus

  620. and the rich

  621. man were

  622. known in

  623. eternity,

  624. then so

  625. shall we

  626. be.

  627. Jesus said

  628. in Matthew

    Matthew 8:11

  629. 8 verse

  630. 11 that we

  631. should sit

  632. down together

  633. at the

  634. feast in

  635. eternity.

  636. And unlike

  637. some of those

  638. sit-downs that

  639. you're a part

  640. of now,

  641. there'll be no

  642. family squabbles

  643. in glory.

  644. You know?

  645. There'll be no

  646. bickering at the

  647. table.

  648. Thank God

  649. there'll be no

  650. politics in glory.

  651. No talk of

  652. that.

  653. Nothing to

  654. divide.

  655. We won't even

  656. get tired of

  657. each other.

  658. Our relationships,

  659. thank God,

  660. will be

  661. perfected.

  662. But not only

  663. that, but our

  664. worship will be

  665. perfected.

  666. You know why?

  667. To put simply,

  668. we'll see him

  669. face to face.

  670. We'll see him

  671. face to face.

  672. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 13:12

  673. 13 verse 12

  674. tells us that

  675. we shall know

  676. him like we

  677. can't hear.

  678. We'll know

  679. him.

  680. It says,

  681. for now we see

  682. in a mirror

  683. dimly, but then

  684. face to face.

  685. Now I know in

  686. part, then I

  687. shall know fully,

  688. even as I

  689. have been

  690. fully known.

  691. We will

  692. enjoy unhindered,

  693. no longer

  694. clouded by

  695. sin,

  696. separation,

  697. ignorance,

  698. all those

  699. things.

  700. The greatest

  701. delight that we

  702. will ever

  703. experience in

  704. heaven, the

  705. greatest delight

  706. will be seeing

  707. him face to

  708. face as we

  709. reign with

  710. him.

  711. Revelation 22

    Revelation 22:3–5

  712. verse 3 through

  713. 5 says,

  714. forever we'll

  715. reign with

  716. him.

  717. Now how do

  718. you respond to

  719. all that?

  720. Well, 1 Corinthians

  721. 15, Paul

  722. describes the

  723. resurrection.

  724. He describes the

  725. glorified state,

  726. and he closes out

  727. with this, his

  728. purpose for

  729. sharing it.

  730. In 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:58

  731. 15 verse 58, he

  732. says this,

  733. therefore my

  734. beloved brothers,

  735. talking about

  736. today folks,

  737. be steadfast,

  738. immovable,

  739. always abounding

  740. in the work of

  741. the Lord,

  742. knowing, thank

  743. God, that the

  744. work, that in the

  745. Lord your labor is

  746. not in vain.

  747. What difference

  748. does it make?

  749. It ought to make a

  750. difference today in

  751. how we live.

  752. Fanny Crosby wrote

  753. some of the greatest

  754. hymns that's ever

  755. been written.

  756. I'm not going to

  757. sing, don't panic.

  758. But she wrote a

  759. hymn, and it says

  760. this, when my life

  761. work is ended, and I

  762. cross the swelling

  763. tide, when the bright

  764. and glorious morning I

  765. shall see, I shall know

  766. my Redeemer when I

  767. reach the other

  768. side, and his smile

  769. will be the first to

  770. welcome me.

  771. I shall know him, I

  772. shall know him, and

  773. redeemed by his side,

  774. I shall stand.

  775. I shall know him, I

  776. shall know him by the

  777. prints of the nails in

  778. his hand.

  779. Fanny Crosby was born

  780. blind.

  781. She never saw a thing

  782. in this life.

  783. How wonderful it must

  784. have been to know that

  785. the first thing that she

  786. would ever see would be

  787. the smile of the Savior

  788. welcoming her into

  789. eternity.

  790. And the same is true

  791. for you.

  792. You shall see him like

  793. you never have.

  794. And you shall see you

  795. like you never have.

  796. What difference does that

  797. make in our life today?

  798. Well, my friend, if

  799. there's never been a

  800. time in your life when

  801. you've asked the Lord

  802. Jesus to forgive you, to

  803. cleanse you, that you've

  804. asked him to remove the

  805. sin in your life and

  806. acknowledge the fact that

  807. you've done wrong, if

  808. that's never happened to

  809. you, thank God today's the

  810. day of salvation.

  811. And if you ask the Lord

  812. Jesus to forgive you of

  813. your sins, to come into

  814. your life and save you, I

  815. thank God today he'll do

  816. it.

  817. He's the one that gives

  818. you the passion to do

  819. it.

  820. He's the one that came to

  821. you.

  822. You just respond to him in

  823. obedience.

  824. I want to be clear.

  825. If that's never happened to

  826. you, and you were to slip

  827. into eternity today, it's not

  828. a threat, it's just the

  829. truth.

  830. If you were to slip into

  831. eternity today, you would

  832. forever be separated from

  833. the Father.

  834. Forever.

  835. Hell's just as real as

  836. heaven.

  837. If you've never given your

  838. heart and life to the Lord

  839. Jesus Christ, come today, I'd

  840. love to guide you in that

  841. process.

  842. Maybe you're here and you

  843. have done that privately, but

  844. you've never told anybody

  845. about it.

  846. You've never made that

  847. public.

  848. And Scripture tells us that

  849. the way we do that is to

  850. acknowledge that just the

  851. way that Christ gave us an

  852. example.

  853. He didn't even need it, but he

  854. gave us an example of being

  855. baptized as a believer.

  856. If you've never acknowledged

  857. your faith in Christ publicly

  858. by baptism, I encourage you

  859. to come this morning.

  860. We'd love to line that up.

  861. We're not going to do it

  862. right now.

  863. We'll love to line that up in

  864. the days ahead.

  865. Maybe God's drawing you to

  866. this church, and you know this

  867. is where you are to serve.

  868. We'd love to guide you in that

  869. process.

  870. I encourage you to come.

  871. Or maybe you just got stuff

  872. going on.

  873. You're just burdened about

  874. stuff.

  875. You just got weight in your

  876. life that you need relief

  877. from.

  878. I'd love to pray with you.

  879. Or you can come to these

  880. stairs and make this your

  881. altar and just lift that up

  882. to the Lord.

  883. You can do it where you are.

  884. I'll never ask you to do

  885. anything more than what God

  886. tells you to do.

  887. And I'm going to try my best

  888. never let you be satisfied

  889. doing anything less than what

  890. God tells you to do.

  891. Just obey him today and

  892. trust him.

  893. Lord Jesus, I love you and I

  894. thank you for your love for

  895. us.

  896. And I ask, oh God, today that

  897. you'll guide us to simply

  898. follow your will, to simply

  899. do what you tell us to do,

  900. dear God.

  901. I'm thankful for an eternity

  902. that we can rest in when we

  903. leave this place.

  904. But until we do, dear God,

  905. help us to live for you.

  906. Help us to make the decisions

  907. that please you.

  908. Guide us today.

  909. Right now to be obedient to

  910. follow your will and your way

  911. in our hearts and lives.

  912. We love you dearly.

  913. Thank you for the privilege.

  914. In Jesus' name, amen.
