  1. I want to turn to Genesis chapter 3, Genesis chapter 3.

Genesis 3 chapter mention Genesis 3 chapter mention

  2. God made everything good.

  3. He spoke, it appeared, and it was good.

  4. And as we arrive in Genesis chapter 3, things are all good.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  5. We come upon some bad.

  6. For the man and the woman that God created are deceived.

  7. They fall short of the glory of God that created them.

  8. Over the next few weeks, we're going to look at their decisions there.

  9. What we can learn from that.

  10. And then delve into the ramifications of those decisions.

  11. Of their wrong choices.

  12. And our wrong choices.

  13. Because not only did they sin and fall short of the glory of God.

  14. Romans 3.23 says, we've all sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  15. There's a lot to learn.

  16. But first, this morning I want us to understand the bad that's in the midst of such a perfect atmosphere.

  17. There in the garden.

  18. We'll begin in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  19. With verse 1.

  20. And it says this.

  21. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  22. He said to the woman, did God actually say, you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  23. And the woman said to the serpent, we may eat of the fruit of the tree in the garden.

  24. But God said, you shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that's in the midst of the garden.

  25. Neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

  26. But the serpent said to the woman, you will not surely die.

  27. For God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you'll be like God.

  28. Knowing good and evil.

  29. I will tell you that there is a lot, I believe too much theological discussion about the identification of the snake in that passage.

  30. Some theologians are quick to say that the serpent is not Satan.

  31. Because it's not identified as Satan in that passage.

  32. There's a Hebrew word for such theological understanding as that.

  33. And that word is baloney.

  34. The reality is the best interpreter of scripture is scripture.

  35. The best interpreter of the Old Testament is the New Testament.

  36. And so I want you to read the words of Jesus in the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  37. In Revelation 12, 7 through 9, when it says,

  38. Now war arose in heaven.

  39. Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon.

  40. And the dragon and his angels fought back.

  41. But he was defeated.

  42. And there was no longer any place for them in heaven.

  43. And the great dragon was thrown down that ancient serpent who is called devil and Satan.

  44. The deceiver of the whole world.

  45. He was thrown down to the earth and his angels were thrown down with him.

  46. And how about Paul predicting his coming demise in Romans 16, 20,

  47. when it says,

  48. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

  49. That alludes to a passage we'll look at in the coming days.

  50. Genesis 3, 15.

  51. That talks about our battle against evil.

  52. This is the beginning of the influence of Satan upon us in this passage.

  53. If God created all with such order and it was all good,

  54. then where in the world did Satan come from?

  55. We need to study in order to understand that a variety of scripture to get a better understanding.

  56. But it becomes clear when we do that.

  57. Job chapter 1 verse 6 puts Satan with this quote,

    Job 1:6

  58. Sons of God.

  59. That's an Old Testament term for angels.

  60. Jesus also referred to him as one.

  61. In Matthew 25 verse 41 when he talks about the parable of the sheep and the goats and the end time.

    Matthew 25:41

  62. Ezekiel 28 paints a poetic picture of what went on with Satan

  63. and prophesies of his coming demise.

  64. Now it actually, in Ezekiel 28,

  65. is giving a warning of the king of Tyre who is an enemy to Israel.

  66. But when reading this description,

  67. you begin to pick up on the fact that this king is simply a puppet of the real evil one.

  68. For the king of Tyre is like a window, I believe,

  69. into the true spiritual force that is behind him.

  70. It says in Ezekiel 28 verse 12,

    Ezekiel 28:12

  71. Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre

  72. and say to him,

  73. Thus says the Lord God,

  74. You were the signet of perfection,

  75. full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

  76. In other words, Satan is attractive.

  77. You were in Eden,

  78. that's when we get a pure clue.

  79. If signet of perfection and full of wisdom and perfect in beauty didn't give you a clue,

  80. you were in Eden ought to give you a clue.

  81. We're talking about more than just the king of Tyre.

  82. Okay?

  83. The garden of God.

  84. Therefore, this description is,

  85. and we'll look at another one like this,

  86. but it's kind of intertwined.

  87. It's speaking of Satan,

  88. as well as one of his puppets,

  89. being the king of Tyre.

  90. Every precious stone was your covering.

  91. And then it goes on to list those stones.

  92. You were an anointed guardian cherub.

  93. And let me tell you,

  94. no earthly king is an angel.

  95. And this is speaking more of the cherubim,

  96. which the cherubim,

  97. that I am on the end of that word makes it plural in the Hebrew.

  98. It is the inner circle of angels.

  99. They are the ones that's closest to the father,

  100. guarding his holiness of sorts.

  101. He said,

  102. I placed you,

  103. you were on the holy mountain of God,

  104. in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.

  105. What does that mean?

  106. Well, Zachariah gives us an indication.

  107. Zachariah speaks of God protecting through a wall of fire

  108. as a symbol of his holiness.

  109. This seems related.

  110. In other words,

  111. what it means is he was close with the Lord.

  112. It says,

  113. you were blameless in your ways from the day you were created

  114. till unrighteousness was found in you,

  115. in the abundance of your trade.

  116. You were filled with violence in your mist and you sinned.

  117. So I cast you as a profound thing from the mountain of God

  118. and I destroyed you,

  119. O guardian cherub,

  120. from the mist of the stones of fire.

  121. Your heart was proud because of your beauty.

  122. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.

  123. I cast you to the ground.

  124. I expose you before kings to the feast their eyes,

  125. to feast their eyes on you.

  126. By the multitude of your iniquities

  127. in the unrighteousness of your trade,

  128. you profane your sanctuaries.

  129. Unrighteousness of trade talks about dealings.

  130. And I will tell you in any dealing that the devil does,

  131. don't deal with him.

  132. Don't do a trade with him.

  133. And then it talks about you profane your sanctuary,

  134. which talks about worship.

  135. For the king of Tyre,

  136. it could talk about the gods that they worshiped.

  137. For Satan,

  138. it could talk about so many ways he disrupts worship.

  139. Both of these things,

  140. dealings and worship,

  141. trade,

  142. sanctuaries,

  143. they both get tainted by the influence of the evil one.

  144. It says,

  145. so I brought fire out from your mist.

  146. I'll tell you what this speaks of.

  147. It speaks of the future demise of Satan.

  148. As if it's already happened,

  149. because it is settled of sorts.

  150. Satan is already defeated.

  151. I hope you know that.

  152. And he knows that he's defeated.

  153. It's kind of like a,

  154. what we're living in now,

  155. it's kind of like when a ball team is gonna lose.

  156. And they know they're gonna lose.

  157. There's not enough time in the game

  158. to score enough points for them to win.

  159. And so the coach grabs that guy that don't play

  160. and says,

  161. listen,

  162. you see old number one out there?

  163. Take his knee out,

  164. all right?

  165. Let's leave a mark on these folks.

  166. We couldn't leave a mark with them cleanly,

  167. so let's do it dirty.

  168. Let's just throw them out there

  169. and see what we can do.

  170. An evil one's been taken out knees ever since

  171. because he knows he won't win in the end.

  172. So I brought fire out from the mist.

  173. It consumed you.

  174. And I turned you to ashes on the earth

  175. in the sight of all who saw you.

  176. All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you.

  177. You've come to a dreadful end

  178. and shall be no more forever.

  179. So he was a top angel.

  180. One of the cherubim

  181. and placed on the pinnacle among them.

  182. He was in the glory of heaven

  183. and he was righteous at first,

  184. but then pride took over.

  185. Why?

  186. Because he was pretty.

  187. Because of his beauty.

  188. Because he was smooth.

  189. And violence followed that

  190. and sin took over and God cast him out.

  191. We have a similar description

  192. in the fall of Satan in Isaiah.

  193. Again, this passage speaks

  194. of an earthly king,

  195. the king of Babylon.

  196. But Babylon itself

  197. is a symbol of Satan's empire on the earth.

  198. You see that much more clear in Revelation.

  199. That the parallel cannot be mistaken.

  200. Again, this king's life,

  201. as described,

  202. becomes a window

  203. into the true spiritual force

  204. that's behind him.

  205. Isaiah 14, 12 through 15 says this,

  206. How you are fallen from heaven,

  207. O day star, son of dawn.

  208. How you are cut down to the ground,

  209. you who laid the nations low.

  210. You said in your heart,

  211. I will ascend to heaven.

  212. Above the stars of God,

  213. I will set my throne on high.

  214. I will sit on the mount of assembly

  215. in the far reaches of the north.

  216. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds.

  217. I will make myself like the most high.

  218. But you are brought down to Sheol,

  219. to the far reaches of the pit.

  220. Revelation 12 gives us

  221. an even clearer understanding

  222. of the havoc that he caused in heaven

  223. when it says,

  224. as I've read earlier,

  225. but I'll read again.

  226. Now, war arose in heaven,

  227. Michael and his angels

  228. fighting against the dragon,

  229. and the dragon and his angels fought back,

  230. but he was defeated,

  231. and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.

  232. And the great dragon was thrown down,

  233. that ancient serpent

  234. who's called the devil and Satan,

  235. the deceiver of the whole world.

  236. He was thrown down to the earth,

  237. and his angels were thrown down with him.

  238. In other words,

  239. he wanted to replace God.

  240. He wanted to receive all the beauty,

  241. all the glory,

  242. all the wisdom,

  243. all the power of God.

  244. Revelation 12 calls him a dragon,

  245. and it goes on to say

  246. how his tail swept

  247. down a third of the stars.

  248. That is apocalyptic talk,

  249. symbolic talk

  250. for angels,

  251. which become demons

  252. when he swept them down.

  253. It's illustrative talk

  254. that gives us insight

  255. into what started

  256. this whole cosmic battle.

  257. Now, besides a good conversation

  258. about the origin of Satan,

  259. why did I share all that?

  260. Why is that important?

  261. I mean, you come in here today,

  262. as I do,

  263. with stuff.

  264. You want a word from God.

  265. So why do we need to know those things?

  266. Why do we need to know this

  267. in view of what we face today?

  268. I want to spend the rest of our time together

  269. by putting it all in perspective,

  270. because this serpent

  271. was not only in the garden.

  272. He's still lurking around.

  273. 1 Peter 5, 8 says,

  274. He is a roaring lion

  275. seeking whom he may devour.

  276. And I believe you need

  277. to take him seriously,

  278. and I believe you need

  279. to properly assess the situation.

  280. And I want to help you do that today

  281. through God's word.

  282. First thing,

  283. just to put it simply,

  284. he is not all that.

  285. He pretends to be.

  286. He's not what he makes himself out to be.

  287. He is a created being

  288. that went the wrong way.

  289. Sometimes when people talk about him,

  290. it's easy to get the impression

  291. that it's Rocky versus Draco

  292. or something from Russia.

  293. And if you don't know

  294. what I'm talking about,

  295. I'm sorry.

  296. You need to go home

  297. and watch all six movies of Rocky

  298. or seven or eight or nine or ten,

  299. however many there are.

  300. The reality is,

  301. this is not an even battle.

  302. We're warring out.

  303. He's not equal with God.

  304. He's not even close.

  305. Satan's not omnipotent.

  306. He does not have all power.

  307. He cannot do anything he wants.

  308. Job teaches us

  309. that at least when dealing with believers,

  310. he can only do what God allows him to do.

  311. And when Jesus cast out demons,

  312. they coward again and again and again.

  313. Not only that,

  314. but he's not omnipresent.

  315. He can't be everywhere at one time.

  316. He can only tempt one.

  317. Now he has a lot of help

  318. because scripture tells us

  319. that he took a third of the stars

  320. or a third of the angels out of heaven

  321. and took them with him.

  322. And they began to work in his evil empire,

  323. spiritually, cosmically, around us.

  324. But help me for a minute.

  325. If he took a third of the stars,

  326. which are synonymous for the angels there,

  327. if he took a third with him,

  328. how much was left?

  329. Y'all get your pens out

  330. and work on that a minute, all right?

  331. Twice as many.

  332. Twice as many.

  333. So if you have any question

  334. about the power of God himself,

  335. period, I want you to know

  336. that the forces that fight with us

  337. against evil

  338. are twice as much

  339. as what fight against us.

  340. Not only that,

  341. but if you're a believer today,

  342. you have the Holy Spirit of God

  343. working in you.

  344. The same Holy Spirit

  345. that was in the creation of the world,

  346. the same Holy Spirit

  347. that had the power

  348. at the sound of his voice

  349. to create all things

  350. is the same one living in the believer.

  351. The Christ that knows all things

  352. and is at all places

  353. at one time,

  354. including in our lives.

  355. What in the world

  356. are we worried about?

  357. I want you to understand something too.

  358. Satan's not omniscient.

  359. He does not know all things.

  360. I hope I can explain this.

  361. The demonic forces

  362. that war against our souls

  363. know a lot,

  364. but they're not omniscient.

  365. It is somewhat like

  366. AI and algorithms,

  367. and I'm a little out of my league here

  368. when I say this,

  369. but the best I understand

  370. from my own experience,

  371. if you search on your phone

  372. for an item,

  373. you go to Google

  374. and you look up that item

  375. on the internet,

  376. when you go back

  377. to Amazon,

  378. you'll see ads for it.

  379. Now, how's that?

  380. But I didn't search on Amazon.

  381. I searched on Google.

  382. Let me go beyond that.

  383. If you have a conversation

  384. with somebody about a product,

  385. when you have your phone on you,

  386. not when you're on the phone,

  387. but when your phone's on you,

  388. you'll get ads

  389. for the things you've talked about.

  390. Some of you on Facebook.

  391. And if you're on Facebook

  392. and you have your phone

  393. sitting on the table

  394. in a restaurant

  395. and you talk about somebody

  396. and you're not on your phone,

  397. what happens

  398. when you go back to Facebook?

  399. If they're not already your friend,

  400. whoever you talked about,

  401. there's a suggestion

  402. that they ought to be your friend

  403. and maybe you'd talk

  404. a little nicer about them.

  405. Now, does the phone

  406. read the mind?

  407. No, it does not.

  408. Does it know all?

  409. No.

  410. But listen,

  411. it picks up on the patterns.

  412. It picks up on the things

  413. that you say.

  414. It picks up on the places

  415. that you go.

  416. My phone will suggest to me

  417. how long it's going to take

  418. for me to get home

  419. from where I am.

  420. Well, what if I ain't going home?

  421. Just another voice in the car

  422. telling me what to do.

  423. The things you look at

  424. and it suggests

  425. what seems appropriate

  426. and if you're not careful,

  427. it'll suggest

  428. what seems inappropriate.

  429. That is so much

  430. like the evil one

  431. that it's almost as if

  432. he uses this thing

  433. to destroy lives.

  434. But I want you to understand

  435. he can't read your mind.

  436. He can't control your decisions.

  437. He can't make you do anything.

  438. I don't want to freak you out

  439. when I tell you this.

  440. But I do want you

  441. to understand it.

  442. You're being watched.

  443. You're being listened to.

  444. You're being pursued.

  445. Thank God the child of God

  446. has all of heaven

  447. rooting for us.

  448. And not only that,

  449. but the devil can't

  450. make us do it.

  451. And we're not near as alone

  452. in it as we think we are.

  453. 1 Corinthians 10, 13.

  454. If you don't know this verse,

  455. you need to learn this verse

  456. and rest your life on it

  457. because it's one of those

  458. kind of verses.

  459. No temptation has overtaken you

  460. that's not common to man.

  461. Now, I'm going to tell you,

  462. I'm tempted to pitch a tent here

  463. and stay here a while

  464. because one of the primary points

  465. that Satan loves to point out

  466. at people is,

  467. you're the only one

  468. that understands exactly

  469. your circumstances.

  470. Nobody's ever been there.

  471. And if they were in the same

  472. situation that you were in,

  473. they'd all do the same thing.

  474. But somehow,

  475. yours is unique and different.

  476. He loves doing that.

  477. Thank God.

  478. God is faithful.

  479. And he will not let you

  480. be tempted beyond your ability,

  481. but with the temptation,

  482. he will also provide

  483. the way of escape.

  484. The devil can't make you do a thing

  485. that you may be able to endure it.

  486. That teaches us a bunch of stuff.

  487. One thing it teaches us

  488. is we're not alone.

  489. We're not alone.

  490. We're not the only one

  491. that's dealt with

  492. what we're dealing with.

  493. And if we think we're the only one,

  494. the devil will try to convince us of that,

  495. that you're somehow

  496. an exception to God's rule,

  497. that therefore it's okay for you.

  498. That's as dumb as getting in a cargo van

  499. that says free candy on the side of it.

  500. Don't do it.

  501. Don't do it.

  502. Don't fall for it.

  503. Others have dealt with the same thing.

  504. We are also not alone

  505. because God is there, thank God.

  506. If you're a child of God,

  507. he walks with you,

  508. he talks with you,

  509. he lives within you,

  510. and he will take your hand

  511. and you'll just follow his lead

  512. and he'll lead you out.

  513. Trust the Lord and his word.

  514. Don't trust your judgment.

  515. It's tainted.

  516. It's tainted.

  517. Proverbs 14, 12 says,

  518. there's a way that seems right to a man,

  519. but in the end,

  520. it's the way of death.

  521. So don't trust you.

  522. Trust him.

  523. He's not all that.

  524. Not only that,

  525. he's not looking out for us.

  526. He's looking out for himself.

  527. Pride comes from Satan.

  528. He's eat up with it

  529. and he loves to pass it on.

  530. Ego is stoked by Satan.

  531. I read Isaiah 14, 12 through 15

  532. a little while ago.

  533. It makes it so clear.

  534. I just want you to see the I wills

  535. in two verses of scripture.

  536. I will ascend to heaven

  537. above the stars of God.

  538. He wanted to be equal with God.

  539. He wanted to reach God's level.

  540. Above the stars means above the angels.

  541. I will set my throne on high.

  542. In other words,

  543. he's got to be number one.

  544. I will set on the mount of assembly.

  545. That's the authoritative position.

  546. Verse 14,

  547. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds.

  548. The clouds are a symbol there

  549. of the glory of God.

  550. He will rise above the glory of God.

  551. He wants the glory

  552. that only God can receive.

  553. I will make myself like the most high.

  554. That's his goal.

  555. Now listen,

  556. Satan can't take the place of God.

  557. He cannot defeat God.

  558. He knows that.

  559. Therefore,

  560. he will try

  561. to take the place of God

  562. in individual lives.

  563. He wants to sit on the throne of your life.

  564. How does he do that?

  565. He tries to convince us

  566. to be our own gods

  567. or to be like God.

  568. That was his strategy in the garden

  569. and it's still a strategy.

  570. It's not that complex,

  571. quite honestly.

  572. It's all about pride.

  573. Who's most important in your life?

  574. Are we the ones most important in our lives?

  575. Or is God what's most important in our lives?

  576. Every time he says,

  577. you can to us,

  578. every time Satan says,

  579. you can,

  580. you can do that.

  581. You can think that.

  582. You can say that.

  583. All of that is based on his I wills.

  584. It all goes back to that.

  585. He's looking out for his causes.

  586. It's all about his pride

  587. and every sin we involve ourselves in

  588. comes from a base of our pride.

  589. When we sin,

  590. we put ourselves first before God.

  591. When you sin,

  592. you decide that your,

  593. your action is more important

  594. than what God would have you to do.

  595. That's what sin is.

  596. Period.

  597. Putting yourself on the throne of your life.

  598. It is prideful rebellion

  599. that marked his fall.

  600. The prophets tell us that.

  601. Revelation tells us that.

  602. And he still prides himself

  603. on filling us full of pride

  604. and rebelling against God.

  605. He'll tell you

  606. what you want to hear

  607. to get you

  608. to do

  609. what he wants to do.

  610. We'll look in the coming weeks

  611. more at that.

  612. But be clear about something.

  613. Satan is not all he pretends to be.

  614. He is not all he claims to be.

  615. And he's not looking out

  616. for you

  617. or for me.

  618. He's looking out for himself.

  619. What does that mean for us?

  620. Well, based upon that,

  621. I'm going to give you

  622. three homework assignments.

  623. I don't like homework.

  624. Never liked homework.

  625. I don't like giving homework.

  626. But I'm going to give you some today.

  627. One is this.

  628. Know that you are not alone.

  629. Keep reminding yourself

  630. you're not alone.

  631. You're not the only one

  632. that's been there.

  633. Your circumstances,

  634. although unique,

  635. are not near as unique

  636. as they feel.

  637. Your circumstances

  638. do not justify

  639. wrong action.

  640. Does not.

  641. We're here to build

  642. one another up.

  643. You're not alone.

  644. Let's encourage one another

  645. before it gets ugly.

  646. Let's.

  647. Listen to me.

  648. Let's encourage one another

  649. when it gets ugly.

  650. It's not time to kill the wounded.

  651. It's time to love them.

  652. And let's know

  653. that it's not just us.

  654. First John 4,

  655. 4 says,

  656. He who is in you

  657. is greater

  658. than he who is in the world.

  659. God will win

  660. in you

  661. and through you.

  662. How does he do that?

  663. Second,

  664. I have to take home point.

  665. Stand strong.

  666. Stand strong.

  667. Satan's a bully.

  668. You ever had a bully

  669. in your life?

  670. There's no boy

  671. in one of my classes

  672. and I was a freshman

  673. in high school.

  674. I'd like to meet him

  675. in an alley.

  676. Man,

  677. I didn't want to meet him then.

  678. I was scared to death of him

  679. and he knew it.

  680. So he'd pursue me

  681. and mess with me

  682. and pick on me.

  683. I'm going to go look

  684. him up.

  685. The horror

  686. that it gives you

  687. most of the time

  688. for nothing.

  689. That's what Satan does.

  690. He's a bully.

  691. He's a bunch of fluff.

  692. And you can sock him

  693. in the nose

  694. with the word of God.

  695. You can put him out

  696. if you'll just stick

  697. to God's word.

  698. No temptation

  699. has seized you

  700. except what's coming

  701. to pass.

  702. And God will provide

  703. a way out.

  704. James 4 verse 7 says

    James 4:7

  705. submit yourselves

  706. therefore to God.

  707. Resist the devil

  708. and he'll flee from you.

  709. That's a promise

  710. of God's word

  711. you better hold on to.

  712. Resist him

  713. and he'll run from you.

  714. He'll run from you.

  715. You give in

  716. and he'll hang around.

  717. Don't fall

  718. for his bluffs

  719. nor his horrible lies.

  720. You have God

  721. within you.

  722. His army

  723. is behind you.

  724. Don't be conjured

  725. into compromise.

  726. Third thing is this.

  727. Give thanks to God.

  728. Give thanks to God.

  729. 1 Corinthians 15

  730. 56 and 57

  731. says this.

  732. The sting of death

  733. is sin

  734. and the power

  735. of sin

  736. is the law

  737. but thanks be to God

  738. who gives us

  739. the victory

  740. through our Lord

  741. Jesus Christ.

  742. My friend,

  743. we can live

  744. holy for him.

  745. We can have

  746. victory over sin

  747. and when God

  748. gives you victory

  749. thank God

  750. for the victory.

  751. Give him praise

  752. and when you do

  753. and you acknowledge

  754. that he brought you out

  755. victory will come

  756. that much more often

  757. and I promise you

  758. if you got a habit

  759. in your life

  760. don't do it

  761. the next time

  762. you feel like doing it

  763. and the next time

  764. it'll get a little easier

  765. not much easier

  766. it'll get a little easier

  767. and the next time

  768. it'll get a little easier

  769. and before long

  770. you'll be habitually

  771. following God

  772. because you made it

  773. a pattern in your life

  774. because you resisted

  775. the evil one

  776. and because he flees

  777. from you

  778. he'll hit you

  779. somewhere else

  780. turn around

  781. and face him

  782. where he does

  783. by the power

  784. of the blood of Christ

  785. you have victory

  786. because of what Christ

  787. did for you

  788. not because of your bravado

  789. not because y'all

  790. so good looking

  791. that's not where

  792. the victory is

  793. the victory

  794. is in Jesus

  795. and he's beat

  796. Satan's beat

  797. and he knows it

  798. and so he's just

  799. going to cause

  800. a skirmish

  801. afterwards

  802. that's all

  803. thank the Lord

  804. for every victory

  805. and victory

  806. will come

  807. more often

  808. because I got news

  809. for you

  810. Satan's just a snake

  811. in the grass

  812. just a snake

  813. in the grass

  814. I have this

  815. this phobia

  816. of snakes

  817. I do

  818. I do

  819. I don't like them

  820. I don't like them

  821. now I'm fascinated

  822. by them

  823. it reminds me

  824. a lot of sin

  825. really

  826. I mean you know

  827. I'm fascinated

  828. by them

  829. when I go

  830. to the

  831. to the zoo

  832. I go

  833. to the

  834. whatever

  835. the serpitarium

  836. whatever it's called

  837. that's not what it's called

  838. but man

  839. I run to that thing

  840. and look at them snakes

  841. and I'm amazed by them

  842. they are amazing to me

  843. to watch them

  844. it just sends chills

  845. all over my mind

  846. as long as that glass

  847. is two inches thick

  848. between me

  849. and that 24

  850. foot long

  851. python

  852. or boa

  853. or whatever it is

  854. going to wrap

  855. his little love

  856. and alarms around me

  857. I want nothing to do with it

  858. when I was a kid

  859. there was a bush

  860. that overhung a creek

  861. in our neighborhood

  862. and there was some type

  863. of green snake

  864. that would hang out

  865. in that bush

  866. I come up on it

  867. I'd go around town

  868. and pick up

  869. or go around

  870. my little community

  871. and pick up

  872. beer cans

  873. and coke cans

  874. and all that stuff

  875. and I'd get different sponsors

  876. for the boats

  877. that I'd race down the creek

  878. and I'd race some cans

  879. down the creek

  880. and when I got to that bush

  881. I

  882. there was a snake

  883. in there

  884. so I just kept

  885. I hope you get

  886. the spiritual principle

  887. because I ain't got time

  888. to share it

  889. I just kept going back

  890. to that bush

  891. scared to death

  892. barefooted

  893. scared to death

  894. but wanting to see

  895. another one

  896. they'd kind of wrap

  897. around that old branch

  898. on that bush

  899. and I'd have to look

  900. in there

  901. because they're the same

  902. color as the leaves

  903. I'd see one

  904. and I'd be you know

  905. I just kept going back

  906. kept going back

  907. one day I left there

  908. and I was disappointed

  909. because I didn't see anything

  910. and I took off walking

  911. and when I looked down

  912. there was a little

  913. bitty brown snake

  914. he wasn't bigger

  915. than an elementary

  916. pencil

  917. I mean he was tiny

  918. but he had his little

  919. head raised up

  920. he was just sunning there

  921. and he let his little

  922. tongue out at me

  923. and I ran a quarter

  924. of a mile home

  925. afraid to look behind me

  926. because he might be

  927. coming down the road

  928. after me

  929. I was scared

  930. to

  931. death

  932. let me tell you

  933. what I did wrong

  934. I kept going back

  935. to the bush

  936. I kept wanting

  937. just to get a glimpse

  938. I didn't want

  939. to pick them up

  940. didn't want them

  941. to wrap around my arm

  942. didn't want to love on them

  943. I just wanted to go back

  944. and get a hint of it

  945. that's what I did wrong

  946. what I did right

  947. is when I saw one

  948. I tucked tail and ran

  949. there are parts

  950. of your life today

  951. that you need to

  952. tuck tail

  953. and run

  954. scripture says

  955. flee

  956. away from

  957. quit letting him

  958. mess with you

  959. and if he's got you

  960. discouraged

  961. and he's got you

  962. beat down

  963. and feeling

  964. defeated

  965. resist him

  966. resist him

  967. and he'll run

  968. from you

  969. trust the Lord

  970. don't let a

  971. snake in the grass

  972. make you skittish

  973. you live for the

  974. Lord Jesus

  975. with every head

  976. bowed

  977. and every eye

  978. closed

  979. I don't know

  980. who needs to hear

  981. what this morning

  982. but I'm telling you

  983. Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  984. and I've just tried

  985. to lay a foundation

  986. for it

  987. tells us so much

  988. about the world

  989. in which we live

  990. today

  991. explains so much

  992. of the struggles

  993. that we have

  994. so many of those

  995. are inward

  996. but man

  997. what's inward

  998. ends up

  999. becoming outward

  1000. if you're here

  1001. this morning

  1002. and you've never

  1003. given your heart

  1004. and life

  1005. to the Lord

  1006. Jesus Christ

  1007. I want you to

  1008. know

  1009. Jesus came

  1010. and died

  1011. for you

  1012. he took your

  1013. sin upon himself

  1014. he died

  1015. in your place

  1016. and if you'll

  1017. confess your sins

  1018. before God

  1019. if you'll agree

  1020. with God

  1021. on your sin

  1022. you'll ask him

  1023. to change your

  1024. life

  1025. and become the

  1026. Lord of your

  1027. life

  1028. and from this

  1029. day forward

  1030. you'll live

  1031. for him

  1032. I think God

  1033. he'll accept you

  1034. where you are

  1035. he'll save you

  1036. for all of

  1037. eternity

  1038. and empower you

  1039. to stand strong

  1040. against the evil

  1041. one

  1042. everyone who

  1043. calls upon the

  1044. name of the

  1045. Lord shall be

  1046. saved

  1047. he'll change

  1048. you today

  1049. if you even

  1050. feel an inkling

  1051. that way

  1052. I promise you

  1053. it didn't come

  1054. from you

  1055. it came from

  1056. God pursuing

  1057. you

  1058. you respond to

  1059. that in obedience

  1060. maybe you're here

  1061. this morning

  1062. and privately

  1063. you've made a

  1064. decision for Christ

  1065. you've surrendered

  1066. your life to him

  1067. but you've never

  1068. made that public

  1069. you've never told

  1070. anybody about it

  1071. I encourage you

  1072. to make that

  1073. public today

  1074. you're to follow

  1075. up that decision

  1076. with baptism

  1077. to let other

  1078. people know

  1079. it's what Jesus

1080. showed us how to do

  1081. it's what Jesus

  1082. commanded us to do

  1083. I encourage you

  1084. to come

  1085. I'd love to guide

  1086. you in that process

  1087. maybe God's

  1088. drawing you to

  1089. this church

  1090. you're a believer

  1091. but you feel like

  1092. God's leading you

  1093. to this church

1094. to be a part of

  1095. this church

  1096. you come

  1097. I'd love to guide

  1098. you in that

  1099. and maybe you

  1100. just got stuff

  1101. ah let's be honest

  1102. we got stuff

  1103. that we need to

  1104. take before the

  1105. Lord

  1106. don't sing through

  1107. this invitation

  1108. and fail to do

  1109. business with God

  1110. because it'd be

  1111. easy to do

  1112. you do business

  1113. with God

  1114. whether it's in

  1115. your place where

  1116. you are

  1117. whether it's at

  1118. this altar

  1119. you lay it down

  1120. before the Lord

  1121. and you commit

  1122. today

  1123. that you'll

  1124. resist the evil

  1125. one

  1126. you'll change

  1127. a pattern

  1128. in your life

  1129. with the hope

  1130. of the Holy Spirit

  1131. of God

  1132. leading you in that

  1133. for his cause

  1134. and for his kingdom

  1135. Lord Jesus

  1136. I love you

  1137. and I thank you

  1138. for the privilege

  1139. you give us

  1140. Lord

1141. to be in this place

  1142. and God

  1143. I pray

  1144. Father

  1145. you'll work

  1146. and move

  1147. in our midst

  1148. right now

  1149. as only you can

  1150. in Jesus

  1151. precious name

  1152. Amen

  1153. Amen
