  1. I want you to turn to Genesis chapter 3, Genesis chapter 3.

Genesis 3 chapter mention Genesis 3 chapter mention

  2. Tonight is the Super Bowl and I'm excited that one I still

  3. claim him as mine.

  4. He apparently don't claim me anymore.

  5. Chris Jones, defensive tackle for all pro defensive tackle for

  6. Kansas City Chiefs and so I wear his colors today in honor of

  7. him.

  8. So went to Houston High School and a dear friend, so sweet and a

  9. good guy.

  10. But anyway, the Super Bowl and in preparation for the Super Bowl,

  11. both teams have watched film.

  12. They've spent time in preparation.

  13. They do that on the college level.

  14. They do that on the high school level.

  15. They watch their game to see their strengths, to see their

  16. weaknesses, to point those things out to the players, to allow

  17. them to see those problems.

  18. Then they also watch film of their opponent and see what their

  19. tendencies are, what their strengths are, what their weaknesses

  20. are.

  21. And then you make a plan to combat that.

  22. Whether on offense, to try to beat their defense.

  23. Or whether you're on defense, trying to stop their offense.

  24. They strategize and make plans for that.

  25. So this morning I want us to watch a little film together.

  26. It isn't a game.

  27. And honestly, it isn't a film.

  28. It's a narrative account.

  29. But I want to help us picture some images in our minds.

  30. More than that, I want you to understand strategy.

  31. I want you to understand the strategy of the evil one.

  32. And I also want you to understand how we can defend ourselves

  33. against the evil one.

  34. As I said a couple of weeks ago, Satan is a snake in the grass.

  35. But he's a convincing one.

  36. He's a slimy one.

  37. He's a sneaky one.

  38. And Adam and Eve were the first to fall for his schemes.

  39. But there's no need for us to point fingers at them.

  40. Because all of us have done the same thing.

  41. We fell for the evil one's schemes.

  42. So my prayer this morning is we can get a handle on that.

  43. Get a better understanding of what we're dealing with.

  44. Better know how to combat it.

  45. But then another step that we won't know today,

  46. we'll know in the coming days,

  47. is do we carry out those combative strategies

  48. to gain victory in our lives?

  49. It's found in Genesis chapter 3, verse 1 through 6.

    Genesis 3:1–6

  50. And I'll just tell you, I don't believe this is just a one-time occurrence.

  51. I believe that this is a one-time occurrence

  52. that explains what happens again and again and again in our lives.

  53. A blueprint of sorts for what we deal with.

  54. Genesis chapter 3 says this.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  55. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  56. He said to the woman,

  57. did God actually say,

  58. you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  59. And the woman said to the serpent,

  60. we may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden.

  61. But God said,

  62. you shall not eat the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden.

  63. Neither shall you touch it lest you die.

  64. But the serpent said to the woman,

  65. you will not surely die.

  66. For God knows that when you eat of it,

  67. your eyes will be opened and you'll be like God,

  68. knowing good and evil.

  69. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food

  70. and that it was a delight to her eyes

  71. and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,

  72. she took of its fruit and ate.

  73. And she also gave some to her husband who was with her.

  74. And he ate.

  75. There was no need for her to sin.

  76. She was placed in the garden of Eden.

  77. She had everything she needed around her,

  78. yet she wanted more.

  79. Even the garden and all its beauty was not enough.

  80. And the one place that she was forbidden to go,

  81. the one thing that she was forbidden to do,

  82. that's what she wanted to do.

  83. That's where she went.

  84. So often that is the case.

  85. We often have so great an appetite

  86. for the things that we need to stay away from,

  87. the things that often lead us astray.

  88. So I want you to be well aware this morning

  89. that the devil is on attack.

  90. He knows how to place things before us

  91. that would most lead us to fall.

  92. I told you a couple of weeks ago,

  93. it's not because he's omniscient that he knows all things.

  94. It's because he and his army of demons watch us

  95. to see our tendencies,

  96. to see what we look at,

  97. to see how we respond and how we act and what we say.

  98. And he leads us to fall in those areas,

  99. just like he did with this first question

  100. that he asked in verse one.

  101. He said, did God actually say,

  102. you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  103. That's just a question.

  104. That's not just a question.

  105. It's a twisting, deceptive type question.

  106. He did not question the love of God.

  107. He did not deny the existence of God.

  108. I'll tell you what he did.

  109. He went after the word of God.

  110. He attacked the word of God.

  111. So I want you to notice this process.

  112. First thing he does is he attacks God's word.

  113. He asked the question, did God actually say,

  114. and then he twists the question.

  115. Did God say you shall not eat of any of these trees?

  116. Now remember, it was the word of God

  117. that gave Adam and Eve everything that they had.

  118. As we talked about a few weeks ago,

  119. God spoke and the sun and the moon were developed.

  120. Stars in the sky were placed.

  121. The land separated from the water.

  122. All on the speaking of God.

  123. Vegetation was created.

  124. Animals were made.

  125. All on the voice of God.

  126. It all came from the word of God.

  127. His instruction came by his word.

  128. All that they knew was by the word of God.

  129. And that's what the devil attacked.

  130. We base all of our faith on the word of God.

  131. We believe his word that Christ is the only way.

  132. We believe his word that we live by his instruction.

  133. That his will and his way is what's best for our lives.

  134. We believe his word that he walks with us in the valley.

  135. That he will not leave us alone.

  136. That the peace that he gives us is beyond any of our understanding.

  137. We believe his word that he sent Christ to live as an example for us.

  138. To die as a sacrifice for us.

  139. To rise as an eternal hope for us.

  140. To ascend to prepare a place for us.

  141. And to return to take us with him that where he is we may also be.

  142. We believe his word.

  143. That upon that salvation we are empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  144. We are sealed by his spirit.

  145. We are guaranteed an eternal inheritance.

  146. All because of his word.

  147. We believe that we've been changed by salvation.

  148. We've been challenged by his commission.

  149. And that we've been empowered by his spirit.

  150. To share with others the hope that God has granted to us.

  151. And we believe all of that based upon the word of God.

  152. All that we believe is the word of God.

  153. These truths are not only printed on a page.

  154. They are God breathed.

  155. They are God breathed.

  156. Into the writers of scripture.

  157. And God indwelt within us.

  158. When we give our hearts and lives to him.

  159. All we know about God.

  160. Is the word of God.

  161. If you attack his word.

  162. You attack him.

  163. If you attack his word.

  164. You attack his salvation.

  165. If you attack his word.

  166. You attack the hope that he has given to us.

  167. The foundations of our belief.

  168. Is found in the word of God.

  169. Therefore the evil one attacks the word of God.

  170. Notice how he attacks the word of God.

  171. He questions what it says.

  172. He said you shall not eat of any of the trees.

  173. It's not what he said.

  174. At all.

  175. We believe his word.

  176. And he attacks his word.

  177. Now I'll tell you what he attacks when he attacks God's word.

  178. He attacks that Christ is the only way.

  179. A lot of philosophies about that today.

  180. Christ is still the only way.

  181. He attacks that we live by God's instruction.

  182. That that's the best way for us.

  183. We often question that.

  184. I know God says this.

  185. But what about my circumstances?

  186. He attacks that.

  187. He attacks the fact that we.

  188. Is God really walking with me?

  189. Does God really see my circumstances?

  190. Does God understand where I am?

  191. The word says God never leaves me alone.

  192. I feel alone.

  193. Can God really give me a peace in the midst of my circumstances?

  194. He attacks the fact that our salvation.

  195. Can come.

  196. No better way to cripple a Christian.

  197. Than make them question their salvation.

  198. And so if you question your salvation.

  199. Let's clear it up.

  200. Before we leave here today.

  201. I will take the time.

  202. To meet with you.

  203. And let's clear it up.

  204. There's no need for you to doubt.

  205. Your salvation.

  206. Because it's the best way.

  207. How are you going to share your faith with anybody?

  208. If you're not even sure about it yourself.

  209. How are.

  210. How are you going to live.

  211. In the power of the Holy Spirit.

  212. If you struggle.

  213. With your salvation.

  214. No need for you to struggle.

  215. With that at all.

  216. But that's where he attacks.

  217. He attacks the fact that we've been challenged by the commission of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  218. That his last words told us to go and tell others.

  219. And make disciples.

  220. And baptize them.

  221. Not only do we not want to travel the world to reach somebody.

  222. We only want to walk across the street and share Christ with somebody.

  223. You know.

  224. He attacks that.

  225. I've said before.

  226. I've said recently.

  227. That there's always going to be two tides against you.

  228. When you try to do two things for the Lord.

  229. One is to share your faith with somebody.

  230. You're always going to be under attack when you do that.

  231. And prayer.

  232. There's always an attack for prayer.

  233. You'll think of something else you need to do instead of pray.

  234. So you'll get up and stop praying.

  235. And the devil loves to get us not to evangelize people.

  236. And not to pray.

  237. Because that's where the power is.

  238. So he attacks those things.

  239. He attacks the fact that we're empowered by his spirit to share.

  240. You'll say, well, I don't know what to say.

  241. I don't know what to do.

  242. He'll give you the words to say.

  243. When he opens the door and you walk through it, you're empowered by the spirit of God.

  244. But the devil's going to whisper in your ear, you ain't adequate.

  245. You can't handle it.

  246. He attacks the word of God.

  247. Not only does he attack, but he also questions the word of God.

  248. Satan is trying to bring doubt.

  249. He says, did he really say that you could not eat of any fruit?

  250. No, he didn't.

  251. It's not what he said.

  252. He said, you may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but this one.

  253. But what God said and what the devil said is polar opposites.

  254. And that's how he questions God's word.

  255. The devil has convinced the world to ask us,

  256. is God's plan really what's best for me?

  257. I mean, if I know what the word of God says,

  258. and I see how it tells me to live,

  259. I mean, is that really the best plan for me?

  260. I don't know that you ask that out loud.

  261. But every time we're tempted to sin and we struggle with it,

  262. that's exactly what we're asking.

  263. Is God's plan what's best?

  264. Maybe how about this question?

  265. How can a loving God hate those who disagree with God's word?

  266. How can he do that?

  267. That's a question the devil loves to throw out.

  268. Is the Bible really relevant today?

  269. Come on, thanks, 2,000 years old.

  270. Is it really relevant today?

  271. That's a question the devil loves to throw out.

  272. And all of that is twisting.

  273. All of it is a perversion of God's word.

  274. I'll tell you what God said.

  275. God said adulterers and perverts and liars and thieves and murderers

  276. will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  277. That's what he said.

  278. If they come to Christ, he will wash away their sins.

  279. He will remove their sins.

  280. When people come to Christ, they are a new creation.

  281. They are not the same.

  282. Listen to me.

  283. They don't do the same things they used to do.

  284. Their minds are being transformed.

  285. They're not perfect.

  286. But the process begins of a mind transformation.

  287. The will is empowered by the spirit of God.

  288. Do we always listen to him?

  289. No.

  290. We're in the process of being transformed.

  291. We are in the process of growing in the Lord.

  292. The process for living that changes.

  293. Our purpose for living changes.

  294. All of that changes.

  295. And when people remain in their sins

  296. and do not come to Christ

  297. or when they struggle in their walk with Christ,

  298. God does not hate those folks.

  299. God does not hate them.

  300. When we speak against sin,

  301. I want to be clear about something.

  302. When we speak against sin,

  303. I'm not telling us to hate the sinner.

  304. I'm telling us to hate the sin.

  305. And no matter what the sin may be,

  306. we have a responsibility

  307. to share the gospel with folks.

  308. To not let them be brainwashed

  309. by an evil world

  310. in which it's led by the evil one.

  311. to convince us that the sins of yesterday

  312. are somehow not sins today.

  313. It is a twisting

  314. and a perversion of God's word.

  315. God does not hate those folks.

  316. God loves those folks.

  317. God loves those enough

  318. to send Christ to die for them.

  319. That's how much he loves them.

  320. The word of God is timeless.

  321. It is always on time.

  322. It is relevant.

  323. It is God breathed.

  324. It is spirit filled.

  325. And it is a book

  326. that reads us like a book.

  327. I want you to listen

  328. to what Hebrews says about it.

  329. Hebrews 4, 12 and 13 says this.

  330. For the word of God

  331. is living and active,

  332. sharper than any two-edged sword,

  333. piercing to the division of soul

  334. and of spirit and of joints

  335. and of marrow,

  336. and discerning the thoughts

  337. and the intentions of the heart.

  338. You know why it's such a struggle

  339. for you to spend time

  340. in God's word?

  341. Because the devil don't want you

  342. to read God's word

  343. and to sense the spirit of God

  344. discerning your thoughts

  345. and the intentions of your heart.

  346. We'd just soon stay distant from that.

  347. And no creature

  348. is hidden from his sight,

  349. but all are naked and exposed

  350. to the eyes of him

  351. to whom we must give account.

  352. So I don't want to be naked

  353. and exposed,

  354. so I'll just not spend time

  355. in God's word.

  356. That's why we don't like it.

  357. That's why we struggle with it.

  358. That's why the forces

  359. of the evil one

  360. come against you

  361. and get you struggling.

  362. Those of you who are trying

  363. to be on a reading plan

  364. and you get behind a little bit

  365. and you get discouraged

  366. and get overwhelmed by that

  367. and say,

  368. I'm just going to give it up.

  369. Don't do it.

  370. Don't do it.

  371. I don't know what

  372. they're telling you to do.

  373. Skip it and start today

  374. fresh and new.

  375. But you stay in God's word

  376. every day.

  377. If you can't handle

  378. the chapters you got to do,

  379. don't do them all.

  380. I'm giving you permission.

  381. Don't do them all.

  382. But you be in God's word

  383. every day.

  384. You spend time

  385. in God's word every day.

  386. You need it.

  387. You're going to be saturated

  388. with this whole evil world

  389. the rest of the day.

  390. You better take time out

  391. to hear from God.

  392. I'm just telling you.

  393. Don't tell me

  394. you don't have time.

  395. You don't have time not to.

  396. You've got to take in God's word.

  397. And if somebody asks you

  398. if you believe

  399. that only people

  400. that believe like you

  401. go to heaven,

  402. you tell them no.

  403. No.

  404. No.

  405. Tell them this.

  406. I believe Jesus.

  407. I believe what Jesus says.

  408. That's what I believe.

  409. And you know what Jesus says?

  410. Jesus says in John 14, 6,

  411. I am the way,

  412. the truth,

  413. and the life.

  414. And no man comes

  415. unto the Father

  416. except through me.

  417. So I don't know

  418. all the things that I believe.

  419. I don't know

  420. if all they're correct.

  421. But I know one thing.

  422. I believe in Jesus.

  423. And I believe what Jesus said.

  424. And Jesus said

  425. you have to come through him.

  426. You just point, folks,

  427. to Jesus.

  428. He's the one that said it.

  429. You got an issue with it?

  430. Take it up with him.

  431. But take it up with him.

  432. Get on your knees

  433. and get before him

  434. and take it up with him.

  435. All of that

  436. is questioning

  437. the word of God.

  438. And when Satan

  439. questions God's word,

  440. he wants us

  441. to question his word.

  442. He wants the,

  443. he works hard on us

  444. questioning

  445. the word of God.

  446. Not only that,

  447. but he distorts

  448. God's word.

  449. He rephrases

  450. this question

  451. in a negative way.

  452. He says,

  453. did God

  454. say

  455. that you shall not

  456. eat of any

  457. tree

  458. in the garden?

  459. Well,

  460. they'd starve to death.

  461. That'd be the case.

  462. He didn't say that at all.

  463. What'd God

  464. really say?

  465. He really said,

  466. you may surely

  467. eat of every tree

  468. in the garden,

  469. but of one.

  470. I'll tell you

  471. what the devil's

  472. trying to do.

  473. He's trying to cast

  474. doubt on God's

  475. motivation.

  476. He's trying to cast

  477. doubt on,

  478. is God

  479. holding me back

  480. from opportunities?

  481. I mean,

  482. what looks like

  483. out there in the world

  484. looks like the best

  485. thing to do.

  486. That's the stuff

  487. I want to do.

  488. If I do what God

  489. tells me to do,

  490. I'll be held back

  491. from those things.

  492. I won't be able

  493. to enjoy all those

  494. things.

  495. Somehow God

  496. don't want you

  497. to be happy.

  498. No,

  499. I'll tell you what.

  500. He's trying to keep

  501. you from getting

  502. trapped.

  503. That's what he's

  504. trying to do.

  505. He's trying to keep

  506. you from getting

  507. trapped.

  508. We can get trapped

  509. in habitual

  510. lifestyles of

  511. behaviors that we

  512. were not designed

  513. to be a part of.

  514. God didn't make us

  515. for that.

  516. And when we go

  517. outside of God's

  518. purpose for our

  519. lives,

  520. we get hooked

  521. on stuff we

  522. don't need to be

  523. hooked on.

  524. Satan tempted

  525. her by telling

  526. her she would

  527. in fact be

  528. like God.

  529. He was making

  530. God out to be

  531. so jealous that

  532. he was holding

  533. her back from

  534. her potential.

  535. I want to be

  536. clear because

  537. the Old Testament

  538. is clear.

  539. We serve a

  540. jealous God.

  541. We do.

  542. I don't know

  543. how that hits

  544. you where you

  545. are.

  546. But I'm

  547. sorry.

  548. We serve a

  549. jealous God.

  550. But I want to

  551. be clear about

  552. something.

  553. He's not

  554. jealous of us.

  555. He's jealous

  556. for us.

  557. He wants all

  558. of us.

  559. He wants all

  560. of us.

  561. He wants the

  562. best for us.

  563. And the devil

  564. does not.

  565. And so the devil

  566. is going to

  567. limit, try his

  568. best to limit

  569. our potential

  570. because our

  571. greatest potential

  572. is found in

  573. Christ.

  574. Christ.

  575. And one way

  576. the devil does

  577. that, the one

  578. way he works in

  579. this world is

  580. through distorting

  581. God's word.

  582. But that's not

  583. the only thing

  584. that happened

  585. because this

  586. wasn't all the

  587. devil.

  588. So let's turn to

  589. Eve for just a

  590. minute.

  591. What did she

  592. do?

  593. She fell into

  594. temptation.

  595. Why did she

  596. fall into

  597. temptation?

  598. I'll tell you

  599. why.

  600. She diminished

  601. God's word.

  602. She did.

  603. When she

  604. began to

  605. think about

  606. it and

  607. continue to

  608. look at

  609. opportunity

  610. before her,

  611. God's word

  612. got smaller.

  613. The whispers

  614. of that snake

  615. got louder.

  616. And if you

  617. ignore God's

  618. word, walk

  619. away from

  620. God's word, or

  621. don't apply

  622. God's word to

  623. your life, it's

  624. going to happen

  625. every time.

  626. I promise you.

  627. I'll tell you

  628. how the devil

  629. does it.

  630. He does it in

  631. two different

  632. ways.

  633. One is he

  634. works in our

  635. world and the

  636. world gets

  637. so loud in

  638. distorting the

  639. word of God

  640. that that's what

  641. we hear, and

  642. that's all we

  643. hear.

  644. I mean, listen

  645. folks, it's

  646. being shouted

  647. all around us.

  648. It's being

  649. shouted in the

  650. news we watch.

  651. It's being

  652. shouted in the

  653. twisting of

  654. science.

  655. It's being

  656. shouted in the

  657. polarizing focus

  658. on politics.

  659. Tear God's

  660. people up

  661. through politics

  662. instead of on

  663. the power of

  664. the gospel.

  665. So he does

  666. it loud like

  667. that, but I'll

  668. tell you how

  669. else he does

  670. it.

  671. He does it by

  672. whispering to

  673. us individually.

  674. Did God

  675. really say,

  676. do you really

  677. think?

  678. Does that

  679. apply to you?

  680. What about

  681. your circumstances?

  682. man, that is

  683. easy to fall to.

  684. We have an

  685. inborn nature

  686. within us that

  687. pulls us toward

  688. it.

  689. And the first

  690. one to face it

  691. who didn't have

  692. an inborn tendency

  693. like we do

  694. fell for it.

  695. He fell for it.

  696. Adam and Adam

  697. just dumbly

  698. following along

  699. joined right in.

  700. And we've been

  701. dumbly following

  702. along, joined

  703. right in ever

  704. since.

  705. Every time.

  706. Tell you what,

  707. James 1 describes

  708. what happens to us.

  709. James 1.

  710. I pray that

  711. when I read

  712. this passage

  713. you'll see

  714. if it applies

  715. to your life

  716. and what's

  717. really happening

  718. in your life.

  719. But each

  720. person

  721. is tempted

  722. when he's

  723. lured and

  724. enticed

  725. by his own

  726. desire.

  727. Then desire

  728. when it has

  729. conceived,

  730. gives birth

  731. to sin.

  732. And sin

  733. when it is

  734. fully grown

  735. brings forth

  736. death.

  737. And I want

  738. you to understand

  739. the New Testament

  740. concept of

  741. death.

  742. You say,

  743. well preacher,

  744. what I do,

  745. I'm not going

  746. to die doing

  747. that.

  748. Yeah,

  749. you are.

  750. Yeah,

  751. you are.

  752. My grandmother

  753. went home to be

  754. with the Lord

  755. years ago

  756. and I

  757. didn't lose

  758. her.

  759. I know

  760. where she's

  761. at.

  762. Okay?

  763. And I

  764. miss her.

  765. And the

  766. reality is

  767. that she

  768. never died.

  769. Scripture

  770. tells me

  771. that when

  772. she closed

  773. her eyes

  774. in death

  775. here,

  776. because of

  777. her commitment

  778. to the Lord

  779. Jesus,

  780. she opened

  781. her eyes

  782. in glory.

  783. It was a

  784. transition.

  785. She left

  786. the shell

  787. behind.

  788. I lived

  789. away from

  790. her.

  791. I didn't

  792. see her

  793. in her last

  794. days.

  795. And when

  796. I saw

  797. her corpse,

  798. it broke

  799. my heart

  800. that I

  801. hadn't seen

  802. her alive.

  803. she died,

  804. but she

  805. still lives.

  806. So I

  807. want you to

  808. understand

  809. that there

  810. are deaths

  811. that happen

  812. in our lives

  813. spiritually

  814. that don't

  815. stop our

  816. heart from

  817. beating.

  818. Our brains

  819. keeps going,

  820. but we

  821. find out

  822. that our

  823. relationships

  824. with others

  825. become very

  826. strained

  827. because of

  828. our sin

  829. patterns.

  830. We find

  831. out that our

  832. honesty with

  833. others becomes

  834. very strained.

  835. There's a death

  836. that takes

  837. place, a

  838. separation that

  839. takes place, a

  840. chasm between

  841. us and others.

  842. There's a chasm

  843. that happens

  844. between us and

  845. God.

  846. As we

  847. continue in sin

  848. patterns,

  849. and don't

  850. acknowledge

  851. them.

  852. If you

  853. fail to

  854. spend time

  855. with the

  856. Lord in

  857. the morning

  858. or in

  859. tomorrow

  860. evening or

  861. whenever you

  862. do it,

  863. if you

  864. fail to

  865. spend time

  866. with him

  867. tomorrow,

  868. Tuesday it's

  869. going to be

  870. easier to

  871. not spend

  872. time with

  873. God.

  874. Wednesday it's

  875. going to be

  876. easier not to

  877. spend time

  878. with God.

  879. Thursday you're

  880. going to start

  881. getting good

  882. at it.

  883. Friday you're

  884. going to be

  885. that much

  886. worse shape.

  887. By next

  888. Sunday you're

  889. going to be

  890. putting on a

  891. fake smile when

  892. you come to

  893. church trying

  894. to hide the

  895. fact that you

  896. ain't seen

  897. hide or hair of

  898. the Lord in

  899. the last week.

  900. That's a death

  901. that's taking

  902. place.

  903. You understand

  904. that?

  905. Because we have

  906. an ongoing

  907. relationship.

  908. relationship.

  909. Okay?

  910. If I live with

  911. my family for

  912. the next week

  913. and I never

  914. speak to any

  915. of them, I

  916. hope I make it

  917. to church next

  918. week.

  919. But that's a

  920. death that's

  921. taking place.

  922. And that's the

  923. kind of death he's

  924. talking about.

  925. Now, stupid

  926. sin patterns that

  927. lead to habits,

  928. that lead to

  929. degradation, will

  930. lead to death as

  931. well.

  932. And we all

  933. know cases where

  934. people got too

  935. caught in sinful

  936. patterns and they

  937. lost their life

  938. because of that.

  939. But I want you to

  940. understand, there's

  941. death that can

  942. happen before your

  943. heart stops and

  944. your brain stops

  945. functioning.

  946. And God wants to

  947. protect us from

  948. that by doing the

  949. baby steps of

  950. living out our

  951. faith for the

  952. Lord on a

  953. consistent basis.

  954. Eve considered the

  955. temptation, just

  956. like James 1, 14,

  957. 15 tells us.

  958. Eve considered the

  959. temptation.

  960. She grew an

  961. appetite for the

  962. fruit of temptation

  963. and her perspective

  964. changed.

  965. When you entertain

  966. the options the

  967. devil throws out, be

  968. careful, it'll change

  969. her perspective.

  970. You'll see it

  971. differently.

  972. Now she saw it was

  973. good for food.

  974. What started as a

  975. question to consider

  976. became a temptation.

  977. And I'm going to

  978. tell you, those

  979. questions can be

  980. subtle.

  981. They really can be.

  982. And that's the

  983. problem.

  984. The subtle nature of

  985. the questions that

  986. he asks us sometimes.

  987. Before you know it,

  988. the thought begins,

  989. if God really loves

  990. me, why would he

  991. deprive me from

  992. that?

  993. I mean, that looks

  994. like the best tree in

  995. the whole garden.

  996. Why shouldn't I do

  997. that?

  998. If he really cares for

  999. me, why would he

  1000. deny that?

  1001. You see the twisting

  1002. of the truth there?

  1003. The psalmist tells us

  1004. how to combat it.

1005. All of Psalm 119 tells

1006. us how to combat it.

  1007. But Psalm 119, 11 says,

  1008. I have hidden your

1009. word in my heart that

1010. I might not sin against

  1011. God.

  1012. The best combat you

  1013. have toward the evil

1014. one is to know the

1015. word of God, to spend

1016. time in the word of

  1017. God.

  1018. It is when these

  1019. questions come that

1020. the word must not be

  1021. diminished in our mind

1022. but be amplified in our

  1023. mind.

  1024. Because I'm telling you,

  1025. you'll go in a hole if

  1026. you are not careful.

1027. When we open our mind

  1028. to consideration, when we

  1029. begin to dialogue with

  1030. temptation, we're in

  1031. trouble, folks.

  1032. You're in trouble.

  1033. I like what scripture

  1034. says, snatch them from

  1035. the fire.

1036. I tell those men on

  1037. Tuesday morning sometimes,

1038. the reason why we meet

  1039. at 6 a.m. on Tuesday

1040. and the reason why we

  1041. meet at 9 a.m. on

  1042. Tuesday and the reason

  1043. why we read through

  1044. books together to talk

1045. about how to live out

1046. our faith for the Lord

  1047. and the reason we

  1048. discuss that is I'm

1049. hoping, dear God, I can

1050. snatch some old boy from

1051. the fire, keep him from

  1052. doing something stupid in

  1053. his life.

  1054. God, wake us up.

1055. Wake us up before we

  1056. go too far.

  1057. The steps of temptation

  1058. are there's a reflective

  1059. question.

  1060. As Barney Fife says,

1061. nip it in the bud when

  1062. that comes, okay?

  1063. There's a reflective

  1064. question.

  1065. The second thing is

  1066. there's a desire.

  1067. There's a desire.

1068. And then the third thing

1069. is where the sin comes in

  1070. and that's a sinful

  1071. action.

1072. And the answer to walk

  1073. away from temptation is

  1074. don't focus your attention

  1075. on the question.

1076. Get back to the word of

  1077. God.

  1078. Instead of considering the

  1079. temptation, consider this.

1080. And if you don't know this

  1081. scripture, you need to

  1082. write it down.

1083. If you don't write nothing

1084. else down, you need to

1085. write this down and live by

  1086. it.

  1087. It's 1 Corinthians 10, 13.

  1088. It'll pull you out of a

  1089. hole.

  1090. No temptation has

  1091. overtaken you.

1092. That's not common to man.

1093. You're not an exception to

  1094. the rule.

  1095. We all face temptation.

  1096. It might be slightly

  1097. customized.

1098. But I got news for you.

1099. If we were to stand up this

  1100. morning, and we're not

1101. going to, if we were to

1102. stand up this morning and

1103. confess all our sins to

  1104. each other, and I had a

1105. big board up here, there

  1106. ain't a board big enough to

  1107. cover Pickens County to

1108. cover all our sins, okay?

1109. And I were to write them

1110. up there, you know what

  1111. you'd see?

1112. You'd just see four or five

  1113. categories.

  1114. You wouldn't see that

  1115. many different things.

  1116. I mean, there's nuances,

  1117. and I know you're

  1118. different than the rest

  1119. of us.

1120. See how he does it?

  1121. Somehow you're different.

  1122. The reality is, no

  1123. temptation sees you except

  1124. what's common.

  1125. God is faithful.

1126. I want you to hear me.

1127. You've got to hang your

  1128. hat on this.

1129. He will not let you be

  1130. tempted beyond your

  1131. ability.

1132. But with the temptation, he

1133. will also provide the way

  1134. of escape.

1135. That you may be able to

  1136. endure it.

1137. God will provide a way out.

1138. The way to sin may be this

1139. big old wide open door right

  1140. in front of you.

  1141. That's so easy.

1142. And you feel this sucking

1143. feeling that you're just going

  1144. into.

  1145. Like a vacuum.

  1146. Take a second look.

1147. Look around a little bit.

  1148. God's provided another way

  1149. out.

1150. And when you fail to amplify

1151. God's word in your life,

  1152. that's a key passage.

  1153. Psalm 119, 11 is another key

  1154. passage.

  1155. Memorize them.

  1156. Say them.

1157. When you fail to amplify God's

1158. word in the midst of your

  1159. temptation and instead

  1160. diminish God's word, you're

1161. going to fall to it.

1162. You're going to fall to it.

1163. She also added to God's word.

1164. I want you to notice what

1165. happens once she starts having

  1166. a conversation with Satan.

1167. I hope that raised a red flag

  1168. when I said that.

1169. When she starts having a

  1170. conversation with Satan.

1171. She said that God said not to

  1172. touch the tree.

1173. He said neither shall you

  1174. touch it.

  1175. That's not true.

  1176. He didn't say that.

  1177. He didn't say that.

1178. We need to stick to God's

  1179. word.

1180. And we don't need to be

  1181. conversing with Satan.

  1182. Converse with God.

  1183. Call out to God.

  1184. We don't take away from God's

1185. word because we don't like that

  1186. part.

1187. We don't need to add to God's

  1188. word.

  1189. God said enough.

1190. He said all we need.

1191. Let's just follow what he

  1192. said.

  1193. Don't add to God's word.

1194. Not only that, she ignored

  1195. God's word.

1196. When she saw that the tree was

1197. to be desired to make one

1198. wise, she's on a slide at this

  1199. point.

1200. You're in a mess at this point

  1201. because you're already

  1202. reaching for the tree.

  1203. First John 2 verse 16 tells

    1 John 2:16

  1204. us how we sin.

1205. It says, for all that is in the

1206. world, the desires of the flesh

1207. and the desires of the eyes and

1208. pride of life is not from the

1209. father but is of the world.

1210. All three aspects of sin is

1211. mentioned in that scripture and

1212. all three aspects of sin happen in

  1213. her life.

1214. I want you to see this.

1215. It's kind of like diagramming sentences in

  1216. English.

1217. What a God forsaken activity.

  1218. But anyway.

1219. But I remember having to make those

  1220. little things.

  1221. I don't think kids know what I'm

  1222. talking about now.

1223. But diagram sentences, you know.

  1224. Break it down.

1225. Well, let's diagram our sin and our

  1226. temptation.

  1227. Let's see what that's about.

1228. It says the desires of the flesh, the

1229. desires of the eyes, the pride of

  1230. life.

1231. The desires of the eyes, she saw what

  1232. she's looking for.

  1233. Okay.

1234. The desires of the flesh was that she

  1235. wanted it.

1236. And the pride of life was that she

1237. could become like God if she did it.

1238. She'd call her own shots.

1239. She'd do it her way.

  1240. Temptation got loud.

  1241. Her attention got distracted.

  1242. Desire got strong.

1243. And the word of God got ignored.

1244. And sin comes when we do things our

  1245. way.

1246. Every time we sin, we try to become

  1247. our own God.

1248. We try to run our own life.

1249. And when our appetite gets wet for

1250. worldly opportunities, and when we

1251. look at the things that God has told

1252. us not to, when we seek to do it our

1253. way, we sin against God.

1254. And the ramifications are huge.

1255. They're much bigger than they appear.

1256. It's kind of like the message that

1257. used to be in those side view

  1258. mirrors.

1259. The things you're looking at are much

  1260. bigger than they appear.

  1261. Don't back into it.

1262. And I'm just telling you, the

1263. ramifications of our sin are much

  1264. bigger than they appear.

1265. And we will look at those in the

  1266. days ahead.

1267. But I want you to see it for what it

  1268. is.

1269. Whereas salvation comes when we stop

1270. doing it our way, sin comes when we

1271. start doing it our way.

1272. And when we do, it's an attack on the

  1273. word of God.

1274. It's an attack on the truth of God.

1275. It's an attack on the character of

  1276. God.

1277. The apostle Paul said this, and I

1278. relate to it so well, I know you do

1279. too, whether you admit it or not.

  1280. Romans 7, verse 15 and 17 through 20.

    Romans 7:15

1281. I'll read it and I'll get close to

  1282. closing.

1283. For I don't understand my own actions.

1284. For what I do not do, for I do not do

1285. what I want, but I do the very thing I

  1286. hate.

  1287. You've been there?

1288. So now, it is no longer I who do it,

1289. but sin that dwells in me.

1290. For I know that nothing good dwells in

1291. me that's in my flesh.

1292. For I have the desire to do what is

1293. right, but not the ability to carry it

  1294. out.

1295. For I do not do the good I want, but

1296. the evil I do not want is what I keep

  1297. on doing.

  1298. Now, if I do what I don't want, it's no

1299. longer I who do it, but sin that dwells

  1300. within me.

1301. There is a way that is right.

1302. And Jesus said, I am the way.

1303. Any other way interrupts our relationship

  1304. with God.

1305. And the ramifications of that sin is

  1306. great.

1307. And we'll study that soon.

  1308. However, let's make a commitment today

1309. to walk away from our sin.

1310. Carlos Villas was a Spanish monk who

1311. lived in India and wrote a book about

  1312. living in India.

1313. And he talks about a bicycle ride that

1314. he took across the Indian countryside.

1315. And as he was riding, he noticed an

1316. unusual silence that came across nature.

  1317. The birds stopped singing.

  1318. Crickets mum their calls.

  1319. Everything got still.

  1320. With no clear explanation.

1321. And then off to the side, he looked and

1322. the mystery was solved because what he

1323. saw there, not that far away, was a

  1324. snake.

1325. That snake had his head raised up and he

1326. was waving it back and forth with his

  1327. eyes fixed on something.

1328. And Carlos looked to see what the snake was

1329. looking at and he saw a bird not far away.

1330. And the bird was transfixed.

1331. It was glued on the snake.

1332. It was paralyzed like a deer in the

1333. headlights, like a mule at a new gate.

1334. And in reality, mentally, he was because

1335. some snakes have the ability to do that and

1336. it leads to their domination.

1337. Vilas just braced for the impact in

1338. anticipation of what was going to happen.

1339. And then he thought, maybe I have time.

1340. And so immediately, Carlos threw his bike

1341. down, started screaming at the bird, waving

1342. his arms and yelling at the bird until the

1343. bird stopped staring at the snake.

1344. Looked at this crazy man and flew off.

1345. I've come today, folks, to throw down my

1346. bicycle, to raise my hands and to scream if I

1347. have to, to tell you, don't get caught in the

  1348. stare of the snake.

  1349. Let's break it today.

1350. That habit in your life.

1351. That pattern that you're leading to.

1352. That thought that you're entertaining.

1353. That that you're already caught up with.

1354. Whatever it is, today's the day to stop it.

1355. Today's the day to realize what the evil one's doing to you.

1356. Today, will you tell the Lord, Lord, give me the power and

1357. strength to walk away from what displeases you.

1358. Help me to live in a way that honors you.

  1359. Answer my questions.

1360. Give me the faith to trust you.

1361. Guide me, oh God, all the way.

1362. Now listen, you may be here this morning and you've never

1363. surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus Christ.

1364. There's never been a time when you've asked him to forgive

1365. you and to cleanse you of your sin.

1366. There's never been a time when you've committed your life to

  1367. Christ.

1368. It's never happened in you.

1369. And I'm going to tell you, the power that I speak of, the way

1370. out that I speak of, is not available to you outside of

  1371. Christ.

  1372. It's not.

1373. Scripture says you are a slave to sin.

1374. A servant to follow his leadings.

1375. And so I'm telling you today that if you'll call upon the name

1376. of the Lord, you shall be saved.

1377. And if you'll ask him to forgive your sins and to come into your

1378. life and change you, he'll empower you with the spirit of

1379. God and he'll enable you to walk away from the patterns in your

1380. lives that have been so destructive in the past.

1381. And I am thankful that you don't do that alone.

1382. Not only does the Holy Spirit come to dwell within you, but you've got a

1383. church body that would love to come alongside of you and support you in

1384. your struggle to help us all become stronger in the Lord.

1385. That's what this is about, folks, is growing in the Lord.

1386. If you've never done that, I'd love to guide you in that process.

  1387. I really would.

1388. You come as we stand and sing in just a moment.

1389. I mean, maybe you're here and you have done that, but there's that sin

  1390. pattern in your life.

1391. You can't get a handle on it.

1392. Can we confess it before the Lord today?

1393. Can we see it for what God sees it and commit ourselves to follow him from

  1394. this day forward?

1395. To trust him with the unanswered questions?

1396. To trust him with the uncertainty of tomorrow?

1397. To know that what he knows is best for us?

1398. To just leave it with him?

1399. I want you to know all week I prayed for you to walk away from the stuff

1400. that so encumbers you and live freely for the Lord.

1401. Maybe you're here and God's drawing you to this church.

1402. You know this is the place that you'd join us.

1403. We're not perfect, nor are you.

1404. So we'll join each other along in the journey and struggle till Jesus

  1405. comes for his sake.

1406. You come and obey God.

1407. Maybe you've made a private decision for the Lord.

1408. You've never made that public.

  1409. Today, you come.

  1410. We'll baptize you.

  1411. Not today.

  1412. We'll line it up.

1413. You come and obey God as he speaks to your heart and life.

1414. Stand together if you will.

1415. Obey the Lord as he speaks to you.

1416. Lord Jesus, I ask today that you'll move and you'll work in our lives as only

1417. you can, oh God, I pray.

1418. In Jesus' precious name, amen.

  1419. Amen.
