  1. You get it, I want you to just hold it up for me.

  2. Y'all look like you're voting, but in reality, we're praying.

  3. Let's pray together.

  4. Lord Jesus, I love you, and I thank you for the opportunity of worship today.

  5. Your sweet spirit's been in this place.

  6. I'm thankful for it.

  7. God, with that same spirit, direct us right now.

  8. Clear our minds, then fill our minds, oh God.

  9. Show us what you'd have us to do, and give us the conviction to do it, oh God, I pray.

  10. In Jesus' name, amen.

  11. Easter will be here in five weeks.

  12. I want to take an excursion today away from our sermon series on creation

  13. to just talk about the importance of what's coming up.

  14. I'll be dealing with Genesis chapter 3 for the next three weeks,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  15. and then on Palm Sunday, we'll look to the cross of Christ,

  16. and on Easter Sunday, thank God, we'll look at the resurrection.

  17. Easter is a great day to honor the Lord and celebrate our new life through resurrection,

  18. and if you have other plans on Easter and can change them, change them, okay?

  19. If you've not made plans for Easter, don't overbook it.

  20. You don't want to miss it, I promise you.

  21. One year ago, it was a significant day in the life of our church,

  22. so much so that we won't do Easter this year like we did last year

  23. because we can't accommodate it, thankfully.

  24. Last year, we hoped for 300 in Sunday school.

  25. We got that.

  26. We wanted to double that in a combined service of an 8 o'clock outside parking lot service

  27. and then a different service at 1030.

  28. If we could combine both of those and maybe have 600.

  29. We had about 200 in the parking lot.

  30. We had 681 for worship.

  31. Amen.

  32. 681, we can't handle that.

  33. We had an overflow, and so we need to accommodate that better this year,

  34. but man, what a day we had.

  35. So I want you to get this schedule down, and I want you to understand it.

  36. At 830, we will have a worship service in here,

  37. and then at 915, we'll have Sunday school at 8 o'clock.

  38. Excuse me.

  39. You're right.

  40. 8 o'clock.

  41. Thank you.

  42. Don't show up 30 minutes late.

  43. Thank you, Jerry.

  44. 8 o'clock.

  45. And then at 915, we'll have Sunday school.

  46. At 1030, we'll have the same.

  47. Well, it says identical.

  48. Ain't two worship hours I've ever been in has been identical, praise the Lord.

  49. But anyway, but we'll have the same program in both,

  50. and so the same order twice.

  51. Our children options will be more advanced at 1030 than at the early one.

  52. If you don't have a Sunday school class, don't leave, okay?

  53. If you are not in Sunday school before Easter and you don't have a class,

  54. then start on Easter.

  55. I'm going to be holding a class in the fellowship hall,

  56. so I want everybody here for Sunday school.

  57. Either you come at 8 and stay for Sunday school,

  58. or you show up for Sunday school and stay for worship.

  59. We're going to have a great day in the Lord.

  60. Last year, we made a commitment five weeks out, and it worked.

  61. And lives were changed because God blessed our faithfulness.

  62. So I want us to commit again today publicly

  63. and to lay that out before the Lord.

  64. The five-for-five card that you received has a tear-off on the bottom.

  65. That tear-off is for you to turn in in a little while.

  66. That top part looks much like a bookmark, and that's on purpose.

  67. So that you can write names upon that list, make that a prayer list for you,

  68. put that in your Bible, put that wherever you need to put it,

  69. to pray over that daily.

  70. Pray about five people that you can invite

  71. to celebrate the resurrection with us on Easter Sunday.

  72. Now, as I preach this morning, I want you to write those names down.

  73. I've asked God to give you those names,

  74. to make them clear to you, to remind you of those things.

  75. I often don't want you distracted when I preach.

  76. I want you distracted this morning

  77. by five names that God lays on your heart to invite.

  78. I'm not asking you to invite them.

  79. I'm asking you to pray about inviting them.

  80. Just write those names down on that sheet.

  81. May God grant that.

  82. Write them twice on both the top list and on the bottom list.

  83. You'll keep the bottom list.

  84. Excuse me.

  85. You'll turn in the bottom list and lay it at the cross of Christ

  86. at the close of this service.

  87. And the top, you can just hold on to that as a bookmark.

  88. I pray that God will let the names flow into your life.

  89. God's been wonderful to us as a church,

  90. and Easter is a wonderful time to invite people to come

  91. and see what God is doing.

  92. People will come on Easter Sunday that will not come any other time.

  93. It is a great opportunity.

  94. And we have something to share.

  95. If you have Christ, you have something to share.

  96. We have no idea how significant it could be to just pray and invite someone to come.

  97. I will tell you that there was a name put on at least one of these cards last year

  98. and placed at this cross.

  99. And that man, since that time, has been saved and baptized as a member of this church

  100. because people were praying.

  101. More than that, but because people were praying.

  102. So I'm firmly convinced that God blesses our efforts in that,

  103. and I'm going to ask God to make that clear to you.

  104. I've been praying in that way.

  105. So I want us to look at John's gospel, John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  106. for just a few moments to give us a glimpse of what can happen

  107. when we walk through the doors that God opens for us.

  108. I want you to see how to respond when Christ walks by.

  109. It's in John chapter 1, beginning in verse 35.

    John 1 chapter mention

  110. It says this.

  111. The next day again, John was standing with two of his disciples,

  112. and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said,

  113. Behold, the Lamb of God.

  114. The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

  115. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them,

  116. What are you seeking?

  117. And they said to him, Rabbi, which means teacher, where are you staying?

  118. He said to them, Come and you will see.

  119. So they came and saw where he was staying,

  120. and they stayed with him that hour, excuse me, that day,

  121. for it was about the tenth hour.

  122. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew,

  123. Simon Peter's brother.

  124. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him,

  125. We have found the Messiah, which means Christ.

  126. He brought him to Jesus.

  127. Jesus looked at him and said,

  128. You are Simon, the son of John.

  129. You shall be called Cephas, which means Peter.

  130. As I prepared for this last week,

  131. I read a devotion around this passage from morning and evening by Charles Spurgeon.

  132. And once again, Spurgeon hit the nail on the head.

  133. The old boy was pretty good at what he did.

  134. And he said this, listen to this.

  135. He said,

  136. When Peter went to find his brother,

  137. he little imagined how imminent Simon would become.

  138. Simon Peter was worth ten Andrews,

  139. so far as we can gather from sacred history.

  140. And yet Andrew was instrumental in bringing him to Jesus.

  141. You may be very deficient in talent yourself.

  142. And yet you may be the means of drawing to Christ,

  143. one who shall become imminent in grace and service.

  144. Oh, dear friend,

  145. you little know the possibilities that are in you.

  146. You may but speak a word to a child.

  147. And in that child, there may be a slumbering,

  148. there may be a slumbering noble heart,

  149. which shall stir the Christian church in years to come.

  150. Andrew has only two talents,

  151. but he finds Peter.

  152. Go you and do likewise.

  153. This morning, I just want to ask you to pray about it.

  154. Who would God have you to pray for?

  155. I don't want you to think about the awkwardness of bringing it up.

  156. I don't want you to think about the fact

  157. that you haven't cultivated a relationship

  158. where you feel comfortable doing that yet.

  159. I don't want you to think about any of that.

  160. I just want you to write that name down.

  161. I want to show you this morning how God works.

  162. How he uses us,

  163. and we don't even realize the impact.

  164. And I want to illustrate that

  165. with something called God's web.

  166. I'm going to do it by looking at a hypothetical lady's life.

  167. All of the experiences that I will share with you

  168. are real experiences,

  169. but not just in one life.

  170. But it shows the strands of God's web

  171. that I've seen in other people's life

  172. and how he works.

  173. I'm going to call this lady Lucille.

  174. That was my grandmother's name.

  175. And although this is not her story by any means,

  176. I loved her,

  177. and I thought about her when I was writing this.

  178. So I want to name her Lucille.

  179. Lucille was one who was not raised in a godly home.

  180. Not a church-going home,

  181. but she was invited to vacation Bible school.

  182. And when she went to vacation Bible school,

  183. people that invited her,

  184. the workers that worked there,

  185. the people who gave out the refreshments,

  186. the friends that were with her there,

  187. it was a positive experience for her to have at church.

  188. It was only for one week,

  189. and she never went back again.

  190. But it made an impact.

  191. As a student in high school,

  192. she was invited to a youth function.

  193. It was one of those overnight kind of events

  194. that youth ministers love,

  195. filled with fun games, lively music,

  196. and good biblical preaching on salvation.

  197. And as she looked around that room,

  198. she saw those who lived that out.

  199. She saw others that played at it,

  200. didn't really live it out.

  201. That confusion caused by their example

  202. caused her to listen,

  203. but to not move forward toward it.

  204. As she grew older,

  205. she had workmates,

  206. workmates that went to church,

  207. churchgoers.

  208. Sometimes she would hear a little about church.

  209. She'd hear them say something about their church.

  210. That community intrigued her.

  211. Maybe it was a place for her child.

  212. She's home one day,

  213. and she also saw a smiley preacher

  214. in a big arena-type church on TV.

  215. He gave a toothy, positive message.

  216. It was not the gospel,

  217. but it was positive,

  218. and he was pretty,

  219. and so she watched him.

  220. She wondered from time to time

  221. how that related to her earlier church experiences.

  222. She heard some ladies one day

  223. talking about a Bible podcast,

  224. and so she downloaded it,

  225. and she listened to that one day.

  226. For just a few minutes,

  227. it sounded relevant.

  228. Food for thought,

  229. nothing much more.

  230. One day at work,

  231. someone invited her to come to church.

  232. She thought it may be good for her child.

  233. Maybe the child would have a VBS-type experience,

  234. and she told them she'd consider letting her child go,

  235. and the one that invited her asked,

  236. why don't you come with her?

  237. Now, that hit her hard.

  238. She was stirred by that,

  239. so she talked to her mother about it,

  240. and her mother surprisingly said

  241. that she had been praying

  242. for that very thing to happen.

  243. She decided to go.

  244. She started in morning worship.

  245. When she attended there,

  246. people were friendly.

  247. She felt at home.

  248. The message was relevant to her life.

  249. The follow-up by the church,

  250. by the pastor,

  251. by those that had invited her,

  252. led to a conversation

  253. that asked her about giving her life to Christ,

  254. and Lucille said,

  255. yes.

  256. Now, let me ask you some questions.

  257. Was it the power of the sermon

  258. that drew her to the Lord?

  259. It played a part,

  260. but not alone.

  261. Was it the friendliness of the people

  262. that drew her in?

  263. Not only that,

  264. but it played a part.

  265. Was it her decision to go to church

  266. that saved her?

  267. No.

  268. Was it her mother praying

  269. that did that?

  270. Was it the one that invited her

  271. that did that?

  272. Was it her persistence in asking?

  273. Was it the TV preacher?

  274. Was it the podcast?

  275. Was it the workmates talking about it?

  276. Was it her experience as a student?

  277. Was it the VBS experience?

  278. Did all of that play a part?

  279. Yes, it did.

  280. They all played a part in God

  281. drawing her in

  282. to a web of salvation.

  283. Was all those steps equally important?

  284. Yes.

  285. Was all those steps

  286. and responsibilities the same?

  287. No.

  288. Somebody

  289. had to give a positive experience.

  290. Somebody

  291. had to invite.

  292. Somebody

  293. had to pray.

  294. Did any of those people

  295. do the saving?

  296. No.

  297. Who did the saving?

  298. Who did the drawing?

  299. Who designed the strands of the web?

  300. And my question is

  301. what would happen

  302. if somebody

  303. disobeyed God

  304. in some part of that?

  305. What if somebody

  306. was not sensitive?

  307. Who knows?

  308. I don't know.

  309. We know all of that

  310. played a part.

  311. So this is what I ask.

  312. Let's play a part.

  313. Let's just play

  314. a part.

  315. Because we do know

  316. a few things.

  317. One is

  318. we know that God

  319. is at work

  320. in your life.

  321. He's at work

  322. in my life.

  323. No matter who we are

  324. He is working

  325. around us

  326. and He is working

  327. in us

  328. and the question is

  329. are we picking up

  330. on it?

  331. Do we sense it?

  332. Second thing

  333. is this.

  334. God is at work

  335. in people's lives

  336. around us.

  337. No matter who you are

  338. no matter who they are

  339. He is working

  340. in people

  341. around us.

  342. He's also working

  343. in us.

  344. So the question is

  345. are we working

  346. with Him

  347. about them

  348. in their life?

  349. Not only that

  350. but God

  351. is drawing.

  352. God's drawing.

  353. He's drawing

  354. people to Him.

  355. He's drawing

  356. Christians

  357. into His work.

  358. God

  359. is at work.

  360. And lastly

  361. we're not to miss

  362. a divine opportunity.

  363. You never know

  364. the difference

  365. that God can make

  366. through you

  367. just inviting

  368. someone

  369. to attend

  370. an Easter

  371. resurrection

  372. celebration.

  373. You have no idea.

  374. You also

  375. don't know

  376. what God

  377. will do

  378. in you

  379. when you

  380. commit to pray

  381. for people

  382. to invite

  383. to an Easter

  384. resurrection

  385. celebration.

  386. Whether it's

  387. an out of church

  388. member

  389. of a long

  390. time ago

  391. that we

  392. just ain't

  393. seen.

  394. Whether it's

  395. somebody that

  396. you know

  397. that might

  398. just need

  399. to be

  400. encouraged

  401. along the

  402. way.

  403. What about

  404. that crusty

  405. neighbor?

  406. The one

  407. you don't

  408. like?

  409. The one

  410. you avoid?

  411. The one

  412. that God

  413. always brings

  414. up to you

  415. when somebody

  416. says you need

  417. to share

  418. your Christ

  419. with somebody?

  420. Has God

  421. placed anybody

  422. in your life

  423. and you go

  424. no not

  425. him.

  426. Not him.

  427. That guy.

  428. Write him

  429. down.

  430. What about

  431. somebody who's

  432. got hangups?

  433. They're messed

  434. up.

  435. What about

  436. somebody that

  437. looks like she

  438. has it all

  439. together and

  440. don't need

  441. anything else?

  442. Write her

  443. down.

  444. Will you

  445. just commit

  446. to pray

  447. for five

  448. of them?

  449. For five

  450. weeks?

  451. Lord,

  452. who would

  453. you have

  454. me pray

  455. about

  456. inviting?

  457. We'll talk

  458. about the

  459. next step

  460. later.

  461. We'll provide

  462. materials for

  463. you to help

  464. with that

  465. process.

  466. But let's

  467. preface

  468. everything we

  469. do

  470. with just

  471. praying.

  472. A concert

  473. of prayer

  474. as individuals

  475. for folks

  476. that God's

  477. laid upon

  478. our heart.

  479. What

  480. difference

  481. would it

  482. make

  483. if hundreds

  484. of people

  485. are prayed

  486. for?

  487. Would that

  488. make a

  489. difference

  490. in people's

  491. lives?

  492. I believe

  493. it will.

  494. And I'm

  495. excited not

  496. only to see

  497. what God

  498. will do

  499. in those

  500. that prayer

  501. may lead

  502. to an

  503. invite

  504. and for

  505. those

  506. who are

  507. committed

  508. to just

  509. pray about

  510. it.

  511. if you

  512. would bow

  513. your head.

  514. I don't

  515. want you to

  516. close your

  517. eyes though.

  518. I want you

  519. to look at

  520. that sheet.

  521. And if you

  522. don't have

  523. five names

  524. yet,

  525. I want you

  526. to ask God

  527. to give you

  528. clarity in

  529. that,

  530. to know

  531. what that

  532. is.

  533. again,

  534. you duplicate

  535. those names.

  536. You write

  537. those on

  538. those first

  539. five lines

  540. so you can

  541. keep that

  542. for yourself.

  543. You write

  544. them on

  545. those bottom

  546. five lines

  547. so you can

  548. rip that

  549. off.

  550. It's

  551. perforated.

  552. You can

  553. rip that

  554. off and

  555. I'll give

  556. you instruction

  557. for that

  558. for just

  559. a moment.

  560. But before

  561. we do

  562. that,

  563. I must

  564. ask,

  565. is it

  566. possible

  567. that someone's

  568. here today

  569. and you've

  570. never given

  571. your heart

  572. and life

  573. to the

  574. Lord Jesus

  575. Christ?

  576. And you

  577. realize,

  578. you realize

  579. that you're

  580. separated from

  581. God.

  582. You realize

  583. that God's

  584. placed you

  585. in this

  586. place today,

  587. maybe many

  588. times over

  589. and over

  590. again,

  591. but he's

  592. placed you

  593. here because

  594. you need to

  595. commit your

  596. life to the

  597. Lord Jesus.

  598. I'm going

  599. to tell you

  600. that Jesus

  601. came to

  602. seek and

  603. to save

  604. that which

  605. was lost.

  606. And I'm

  607. thankful today

  608. that he'll

  609. save you.

  610. He'll

  611. change you

  612. if you

  613. surrender

  614. your life

  615. to him.

  616. I encourage

  617. you as we

  618. give the

  619. invitation in

  620. just a moment

  621. for you to

  622. come.

  623. I'll be here

  624. ready to pray

  625. for you.

  626. Be happy to

  627. thoroughly show

  628. you what it

  629. means to give

  630. your heart and

  631. life to the

  632. Lord Jesus

  633. Christ.

  634. Don't put it

  635. off.

  636. Maybe you've

  637. done that,

  638. but you've

  639. never publicly

  640. acknowledged that

  641. through baptism.

  642. Jesus, by his

  643. example and by

  644. his commission,

  645. told us that's

  646. how we show

  647. folks that we're

  648. Christians.

  649. So I encourage

  650. you if you've

  651. never done that,

  652. come.

  653. Make that

  654. right.

  655. We'll line

  656. that up for

  657. you when you

  658. come.

  659. Maybe you're

  660. here and God's

  661. drawing you to be

  662. a part of First

  663. Baptist Church.

  664. You know this is

  665. where God would

  666. have you to serve.

  667. I encourage you

  668. to come.

  669. I encourage you

  670. to come.

  671. I'd love to pray

  672. for you.

  673. I'd love to guide

  674. you in that process.

  675. Or maybe you're

  676. here and you've

  677. got something you

  678. need to lay

  679. before the Lord.

  680. Might be

  681. something about

  682. your own life.

  683. Might be

  684. something about

  685. somebody else's

  686. life.

  687. But you just

  688. need time before

  689. the Lord.

  690. These steps here

  691. are a makeshift

  692. altar for us to be

  693. able to lay things

  694. down before him.

  695. I have no idea how

  696. God's guiding you.

  697. I don't pretend

  698. that.

  699. I just do what

  700. God leads me to

  701. do.

  702. I just encourage you

  703. to be obedient to

  704. follow him in every

  705. way.

  706. We'll stand

  707. together and we'll

  708. sing.

  709. But more important

  710. than that, I

  711. encourage you to

  712. obey God as he

  713. speaks to your

  714. heart and life.

  715. Lord Jesus, I love

  716. you.

  717. And I ask your

  718. God that you'll

  719. guide each and

  720. every one today to

  721. simply follow what

  722. you would have them

  723. to do, oh Lord, I

  724. pray.

  725. In Jesus' precious

  726. name, amen.

  727. Amen.
