  1. Genesis chapter 6.

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  2. The way God works and the way he moves is often unpredictable.

  3. I often say that God throws curveballs.

  4. He works in unexpected ways.

  5. But a common trait of God is to raise somebody up in just the nick of time

  6. when there's a task at hand.

  7. He challenged Abraham to pick it all up, everything he had,

  8. and go and God would tell him where he had to go along the way.

  9. That's pretty scary.

  10. He rose up Moses to become the mouthpiece of the law, of God's law.

  11. And Moses was, by his own description, slow of speech and tongue.

  12. He even said that slowly.

  13. Joseph was a man who ran the breadbasket of the world in the midst of a famine,

  14. but he had been sold into slavery by his brothers, left for dead.

  15. David was the youngest and the overlooked,

  16. but God used him to expand Israel to its greatest heights, at least so far.

  17. Did we bring up the foot-shaped mouth of Peter?

  18. Did we bring up the Christian killer named Saul or the late bloomer named James

  19. who became the pastor of the church in Jerusalem?

  20. That's just a few of those because God throws curveballs.

  21. How about if God picks a man that lives in the desert

  22. to build a boat to save humanity from total destruction

  23. while the earth was to face utter destruction?

  24. That's what God did, and he chose Noah to be that man.

  25. Now, how did he pick him?

  26. Who is it that God uses?

  27. What is God looking for in us to use us?

  28. Now, as I've listed several people,

  29. we could get several traits that God looks for

  30. in examining the many that I've mentioned,

  31. but I just found, I just want to look at a few traits

  32. that we see in Noah this morning.

  33. I think it's challenging enough.

  34. It's plenty to ponder on.

  35. It's found in Genesis chapter 6, beginning in verse 5,

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  36. and it says this,

  37. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth,

  38. that every intention of the thoughts of his heart

  39. was only evil continually,

  40. and the Lord regretted that he had made man on earth,

  41. and he grieved him to his heart.

  42. So the Lord said,

  43. I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land,

  44. and man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens,

  45. for I am sorry that I made them.

  46. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

  47. These are the generations of Noah.

  48. Noah was a righteous man,

  49. blameless in his generation.

  50. Noah walked with God.

  51. I don't know about you,

  52. but I know that I,

  53. I want to be used of God.

  54. I want God to use me for his purposes,

  55. as he sees fit,

  56. and to do my best to remove any hindrances

  57. that may be,

  58. that I may be prone to put in his way.

  59. I want to be used of God.

  60. And from Noah's example,

  61. I believe we find some things that God looks for.

  62. Who does God use?

  63. God uses one who is blessed.

  64. It may seem kind of backwards to say it like that,

  65. but it's the truth.

  66. It's not.

  67. It's not backwards.

  68. It's the truth.

  69. It's just the way God works,

  70. and we don't have to understand his work.

  71. We better accept it,

  72. but we don't have to understand it.

  73. God favored Noah.

  74. He did.

  75. He blessed Noah.

  76. He didn't do that because Noah was righteous,

  77. although Noah was righteous.

  78. He was not perfect,

  79. and scripture points that out,

  80. but he was right.

  81. And God looked upon him with favor,

  82. and he shined.

  83. It is the blessings of God

  84. that allow us to be at our very best.

  85. We're not able to do that within ourselves.

  86. God enables us.

  87. As a matter of fact,

  88. when it says that he found favor with God,

  89. that word in the Hebrew literally speaks of grace.

  90. In other words,

  91. it's in his grace and by his blessings

  92. that we're allowed to be everything that we can be

  93. for his honor and for his glory.

  94. We don't receive his blessings because of what we do.

  95. We are blessed by his grace

  96. and given the ability to do that.

  97. And when we use that God-given ability

  98. to do blessed things,

  99. we are further blessed.

  100. It is a fulfillment of what life was meant to be.

  101. It has to do with being used for your purpose.

  102. I don't normally carry a pocket knife.

  103. I've had a few in that big knife store

  104. in Sevierville.

  105. I'll go in there and find one and buy one

  106. and put it in my pocket

  107. and wash it in the washing machine the following week.

  108. I don't normally carry a pocket knife.

  109. I have a couple,

  110. but I just don't need it that often.

  111. But I do carry a set of keys.

  112. I carry a set of keys

  113. and I can cut a lot of things

  114. with a jaggered end of a key.

  115. I'm pretty good at it.

  116. Don't come messing with me.

  117. I'm pretty good at it.

  118. So,

  119. do my keys always do a good job cutting something?

  120. No.

  121. My keys are made to open locks,

  122. but sometimes I can cut through packaging tape

  123. to open a package when it comes.

  124. You take those tags off your clothes,

  125. you know,

  126. I'll get my key out, son,

  127. and saw that baby off.

  128. But much beyond that,

  129. my keys won't cut it.

  130. Pun intended.

  131. Why?

  132. Because that's not the purpose of the keys.

  133. The purpose of the key is to unlock,

  134. to open a lock.

  135. My best defense is my key,

  136. so if you mess with me,

  137. be careful, son,

  138. because I'll pull it on you,

  139. you know.

  140. But that's not really the purpose of the key.

  141. The key is to unlock.

  142. Knives are made for cutting.

  143. Our purpose in life

  144. is to live for the Lord.

  145. We're to carry out His will for our lives,

  146. and when we don't do that,

  147. we are living outside of our purpose.

  148. We're not living up to our potential.

  149. You'll be blessed by God

  150. when you carry out His purpose for your life,

  151. that His grace has enabled you

  152. to do,

  153. and you'll see the favor of God.

  154. The favor that God has for you

  155. as you walk in His way.

  156. Living for Him

  157. brings everything to light.

  158. Scripture says that Noah

  159. was favored and blessed,

  160. and God used him.

  161. But I see another trait as well.

  162. God uses one who is righteous.

  163. One who walks with the Lord

  164. can be righteous.

  165. It's not that we earn that righteousness.

  166. It is that we're changed by God's power

  167. and by His might,

  168. and under God,

  169. we can live in a way that pleases Him.

  170. Now, for the Christian,

  171. this righteousness is positional.

  172. We have been made right by the Lord

  173. when we come into relationship with Him.

  174. And now,

  175. we just have to live that way

  176. in our practice.

  177. And Noah did.

  178. He put his faith in God

  179. to work,

  180. and God enabled him

  181. to live a righteous life.

  182. I want you to listen to what Hebrews 11,

    Hebrews 11:7

  183. verse 7 said about him.

  184. He said,

  185. By faith Noah,

  186. being warned by God

  187. concerning events as yet unseen,

  188. in reverent fear,

  189. constructed an ark

  190. for the saving of his household.

  191. By this,

  192. he condemned the world

  193. and became an heir

  194. of the righteousness

  195. that comes from faith.

  196. Just as in the days of Noah,

  197. so it'll be

  198. in the days of the Son of Man.

  199. What a contrast to the world

  200. in which he was living.

  201. His world was marked by wickedness.

  202. His world was marked by perversion.

  203. And the thoughts and the minds of society

  204. were polluted.

  205. They were led by the lust of the flesh.

  206. They were led by the lust of the eyes.

  207. They were led by the pride of life.

  208. How do you survive in your walk with God

  209. when you live in a world

  210. that's filled with all of that stuff?

  211. Well, we better learn

  212. because we're right there.

  213. We're right in the midst of it.

  214. Jesus was talking about his return

  215. and he said this in Luke chapter 17,

    Luke 17:26

  216. verse 26 and following.

  217. He said,

  218. Just as in the days of Noah,

  219. so it will be in the days of the Son of Man.

  220. They were eating and drinking

  221. and marrying and being given in marriage

  222. until the day when Noah entered the ark.

  223. And the flood came and destroyed them all.

  224. Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot,

  225. there will be eating and drinking

  226. and buying and selling,

  227. planting and building.

  228. But on the day when Lot went out from Sodom,

  229. fire and sulfur rained from heaven

  230. and destroyed them all.

  231. So it will be on the day

  232. when the Son of Man is revealed.

  233. Now, I want you to understand something.

  234. The point of that passage is the suddenness

  235. and the need of readiness

  236. concerning the return of the Lord.

  237. I truly believe the only thing

  238. that is holding the Lord back from coming

  239. is the Father telling him to go get his bride.

  240. And I believe we need to be ready.

  241. I don't care what's happening in the world

  242. and you're trying to figure it out on your timeline.

  243. You better be ready

  244. because I'm telling you,

  245. the Lord could return at any time.

  246. However, I want you to understand

  247. that the wickedness we see around us today,

  248. it is no greater than the wickedness around Noah.

  249. He faced the same thing.

  250. It's probably not any better today

  251. than it was with Noah,

  252. but it's probably not any worse.

  253. So what do you do if you're a Christian

  254. who's trying to live for Christ

  255. if the world you live in is wicked enough to destroy?

  256. What do you do

  257. when the whole world seems to have turned upside down?

  258. It becomes completely amoral

  259. and the things that they should shame

  260. are held as if it's correct.

  261. And the things that are correct

  262. as if they're shamed.

  263. What do you do in the midst of that?

  264. I'll tell you what you do.

  265. You live for the Lord Jesus.

  266. You live on for Christ.

  267. You live a righteous life.

  268. It is the darkness that the light is made more obvious.

  269. The more wicked world,

  270. the more the faithful Christian will stand out.

  271. And friend, it's time we stand out.

  272. It's time we make a difference in the world

  273. in which we're planted.

  274. God uses one who's righteous,

  275. but also God uses one who is a witness.

  276. No one didn't try to hide the fact

  277. that the difference in him was God.

  278. He let that be known.

  279. He spoke out about living right before the Lord.

  280. And you know how I know that?

  281. Because 2 Peter 2, verse 5

    2 Peter 2:5

  282. calls him a herald of righteousness.

  283. Now, a herald is a person who carries

  284. or proclaims important news.

  285. And Noah was speaking of the Lord.

  286. He was preaching about the Lord.

  287. So don't think that Noah was some recluse whittler

  288. that never engaged with anybody,

  289. but spent 100 years of himself,

  290. to himself building the boat

  291. that God told him to build.

  292. No, Noah honored God with his life.

  293. And when people ask him

  294. why he lived the way he did,

  295. if people ask him

  296. why he built a boat miles away from water,

  297. he told them.

  298. Actually, he was telling them

  299. before they ask

  300. because he is a herald of righteousness

  301. as Scripture describes him.

  302. There is a fella at Sam's Club these days

  303. that is trying his best.

  304. He stands beside the dog food

  305. and he's trying to sell me a home warranty

  306. every time I go in there.

  307. He asked me if I'm a homeowner.

  308. I said, I am.

  309. He does his sales pitch.

  310. I tell him I'm not interested.

  311. I come back two weeks later.

  312. He says, are you a homeowner?

  313. What is it about me

  314. that makes him think I'm losing my home?

  315. I mean, what is that, you know?

  316. But I want you to understand something

  317. about this fella.

  318. He is a herald for the home warranty.

  319. I mean, he is.

  320. He does not wait for you to ask him,

  321. why do you loiter by the dog food?

  322. He don't ask.

  323. He meets you where you are.

  324. And he tells you

  325. the qualities and the timing.

  326. If you'll do it today,

  327. Sam's will pay for your first month,

  328. but you got to fill out the form now.

  329. Go to it now.

  330. He's a herald of the home warranty.

  331. He's dedicated to it.

  332. I don't approach him.

  333. He approaches me.

  334. Noah was living it,

  335. is what I'm trying to tell you.

  336. Noah was sharing it.

  337. He was telling people about it.

  338. He told people

  339. who made the difference in his life.

  340. And my friend,

  341. we ought to too.

  342. We ought to be heralds of the gospel.

  343. Sharing with others

  344. the difference that Christ has made in our life.

  345. Seek them out.

  346. Pray for them.

  347. Speak to them.

  348. When God opens the door for you to do that,

  349. God uses a witness.

  350. Somebody who's just willing.

  351. He'll use you.

  352. He also uses one who is blameless.

  353. Blamelessness speaks of how people took him.

  354. Some people live right.

  355. They talk right.

  356. But you just don't trust them.

  357. You can't quite put your finger on it.

  358. But something just don't smell right.

  359. It just seems like something's up.

  360. That was not the case for Noah.

  361. Noah lived out his faith.

  362. He spoke of it.

  363. And when Noah was standing with two other men

  364. having a conversation

  365. and Noah walked off,

  366. those other two guys would look at each other

  367. and say,

  368. I think a lot of that man.

  369. That man's a lot.

  370. He's a man of God.

  371. And when discussion came up

  372. about why Noah was building

  373. a cruise ship-sized boat

  374. in the middle of the desert,

  375. they didn't understand him.

  376. They probably thought he was a little off.

  377. Maybe way off.

  378. But I'm telling you,

  379. if he was blameless,

  380. they thought the world of him.

  381. He believed God

  382. and people believed in him

  383. and God uses people

  384. with a reputation

  385. that people can trust.

  386. He'll use the blameless.

  387. God also uses one who walks with God.

  388. He uses the person who walks with God.

  389. And Scripture says clearly

  390. at the end of this passage,

  391. Noah walked with God daily.

  392. That means he talked with God.

  393. That means he walked with God.

  394. That means he lived for God.

  395. Now, I want you to notice

  396. the progressive buildup

  397. in this description of Noah.

  398. First, he was a blessed man.

  399. We could spend the afternoon here.

  400. If I were to ask you,

  401. has God blessed your life?

  402. Share today some way

  403. that God has blessed your life.

  404. If you were quick

  405. and wasn't hungry,

  406. you could stand up and speak

  407. and talk about the blessings

  408. of the Lord.

  409. He was blessed.

  410. He was a righteous man.

  411. Not near as many as there should be

  412. are righteous today.

  413. God honors

  414. and God uses

  415. the righteous.

  416. He was a blameless man.

  417. Many want that.

  418. They aim for that kind of goal,

  419. but they few reach that,

  420. that blamelessness.

  421. He was a godly man.

  422. He walked with God.

  423. That term there,

  424. Noah walked with God,

  425. is something that is used

  426. very rarely in the Old Testament.

  427. It is spoken of about Enoch.

  428. It is spoken of about Abraham.

  429. It is spoken of about Isaac

  430. and some godly kings.

  431. And that's it.

  432. And when you combine

  433. all those characteristics

  434. of being blessed

  435. and being righteous

  436. and being blameless

  437. and walking with God,

  438. I want you to understand

  439. the impact

  440. that that has upon your life.

  441. For one,

  442. you are spiritually alert.

  443. He knew the judgment

  444. of God was coming

  445. because he walked with God.

  446. Nobody else seemed

  447. to have a clue apparently.

  448. But he knew it was coming

  449. because he walked with God.

  450. He was spiritually alert.

  451. Not only that,

  452. but he was spiritually accurate.

  453. He was aiming

  454. in the right direction.

  455. He was surrounded

  456. by the ungodlessness

  457. of the day

  458. and yet he was blameless

  459. and above reproach.

  460. It wasn't that he was

  461. a little bit better

  462. than everybody else.

  463. No, he was blameless

  464. and above reproach.

  465. That means that people

  466. didn't say anything bad about him

  467. and if they did say something about him,

  468. somebody was going to straighten you out

  469. if you said something.

  470. That whole phrase

  471. that Noah was blameless

  472. and above reproach

  473. just hangs over me.

  474. What a testimony.

  475. What a place to aim.

  476. to be blameless

  477. and above reproach.

  478. Not only that,

  479. but he was also

  480. spiritually consistent.

  481. He steadily walked with God.

  482. Not only was he made stronger

  483. by that,

  484. but he impacted

  485. other people's lives.

  486. He was a herald

  487. of godliness.

  488. I mean,

  489. as Noah was exposed

  490. to the holiness of God

  491. in his walk,

  492. he became more aware

  493. of the wickedness

  494. around him.

  495. And it's cyclical

  496. the way this works

  497. because the more aware

  498. of the wickedness

  499. around him,

  500. the more he realized

  501. the coming

  502. of the judgment of God.

  503. And the more he realized

  504. the judgment of God

  505. was coming,

  506. the more he considered

  507. the evil of the world.

  508. And the more aware

  509. of that that he was,

  510. the closer he walked

  511. with God.

  512. And the closer

  513. that he walked with God,

  514. the more he was aware

  515. of the judgment of God.

  516. Out of the overflow

  517. of that spiritual life,

  518. he lived blamelessly

  519. blamelessly before the Lord.

  520. He lived,

  521. he walked obediently

  522. before the Lord.

  523. And he spoke openly

  524. about the Lord.

  525. And what,

  526. what may seem ironic

  527. about all that,

  528. I don't believe it is,

  529. is the name Noah

  530. means rest.

  531. Debatably,

  532. the busiest man

  533. on the earth.

  534. He had a big boat to build.

  535. Yet his name

  536. means rest.

  537. That's what

  538. a blameless walk

  539. and talk

  540. with God

  541. will do for you.

  542. In the midst of the busyness

  543. and the chaos,

  544. God will give you rest.

  545. Hebrews 11 verse 7

    Hebrews 11:7

  546. says that he worked

  547. with a reverent fear.

  548. That means that he had

  549. a reverence

  550. and an obedience

  551. to God

  552. that motivated him

  553. to let nothing

  554. come in the way.

  555. Nothing.

  556. Not,

  557. not his misunderstanding,

  558. a flood.

  559. Many believed

  560. it hadn't even rained yet.

  561. And here he is

  562. preparing for a flood.

  563. How do you wrap

  564. your head around that?

  565. He didn't let his

  566. weariness get in the way.

  567. He built a big old boat.

  568. He didn't let his

  569. weariness come in the way.

  570. He didn't let the ridicule

  571. come in the way.

  572. I mean,

  573. he was blameless

  574. and right,

  575. but people would say,

  576. you know,

  577. he's blameless

  578. and he's right,

  579. but is he all right?

  580. What's he doing?

  581. Not the stress

  582. of the job

  583. ahead of him.

  584. Did you realize

  585. that once he

  586. got that thing built,

  587. what was in front

  588. of him?

  589. For one,

  590. he was going to be

  591. on a boat

  592. with his family

  593. for a year,

  594. you know?

  595. But besides that,

  596. he was a cruise

  597. ship manager

  598. for thousands

  599. of animals.

  600. Nothing

  601. came in the way

  602. of him being

  603. used by God.

  604. And I'll tell you,

  605. in a day of wickedness,

  606. God uses

  607. the person

  608. that lives out

  609. God's purposes

  610. for his or her life.

  611. The person

  612. that's blessed

  613. by God.

  614. The person

  615. who's willing

  616. to be a blessing

  617. for the Lord.

  618. God wants people

  619. who live

  620. a consecrated life,

  621. a solid witness

  622. for the Lord,

  623. a reputation

  624. without blame,

  625. that have a solid

  626. daily walk

  627. with God.

  628. God's

  629. God's

  630. God's

  631. God's

  632. love.

  633. That's why

  634. he'll use you today.

  635. May there not

  636. be any

  637. hindrances

  638. in our life

  639. from being

  640. everything

  641. that God

  642. would have us

  643. to be,

  644. from doing

  645. everything

  646. that God

  647. would have us

  648. to do,

  649. than accomplishing

  650. all

  651. that God

  652. has set forth

  653. for us.

  654. May nothing

  655. come in the way

  656. of that.

  657. And so I ask

  658. today,

  659. what is it

  660. in your life

  661. today

  662. that serves

  663. as a hindrance

  664. from you being

  665. everything that God

  666. would have you

  667. to be?

  668. I'm not

  669. talking about

  670. 10 years

  671. ago.

  672. I'm not

  673. talking about

  674. 20 years

  675. ago.

  676. I'm not

  677. talking about

  678. two weeks

  679. ago.

  680. Let's deal

  681. with today.

  682. What is it

  683. today

  684. that keeps

  685. you from being

  686. everything that God

  687. would have you

  688. to be?

  689. for some

  690. of you,

  691. it may be

  692. that although

  693. you have a

  694. knowledge of

  695. the Lord,

  696. an awareness

  697. of Him,

  698. the reality

  699. is when you

  700. look at your

  701. life,

  702. you've never

  703. entered into

  704. a relationship

  705. with Christ.

  706. You've never

  707. surrendered your

  708. life to follow

  709. Him.

  710. You've never

  711. confessed your

  712. sins before Him.

  713. You've never

  714. asked Him to

  715. forgive you and

  716. to come into

  717. your life and

  718. change you.

  719. You've never

  720. entered into

  721. a relationship,

  722. never been

  723. saved.

  724. And if that's

  725. the case in

  726. your life,

  727. I've got news

  728. for you.

  729. Today's the

  730. day of salvation.

  731. He'll meet

  732. you where you

  733. are and change

  734. you forever.

  735. And maybe you

  736. have done that,

  737. but the reality

  738. is there's areas

  739. of your life that

  740. are not pleasing

  741. to God.

  742. You've not been

  743. obedient about God.

  744. Maybe you've

  745. done that privately

  746. and never made

  747. it public.

  748. Jesus, by His

  749. example and by

  750. His commission,

  751. tells us that

  752. our faith ought

  753. to be made

  754. public.

  755. We need to

  756. let that be

  757. known.

  758. Or maybe you

  759. have all that

  760. down, but you

  761. don't have

  762. everything down.

  763. And there's

  764. some things you

  765. need to put

  766. down at the

  767. altar and leave

  768. them today so

  769. that you can be

  770. used of God,

  771. not for great,

  772. mighty, earth-shaking,

  773. life, world-changing,

  774. but just be ready

  775. to do what God

  776. wants to do in

  777. your life.

  778. Let nothing come

  779. in the way of

  780. what God wants

  781. to do in you.

  782. May we honor God

  783. with everything that

  784. we are.

  785. With every head

  786. bowed,

  787. with every

  788. eye closed.

  789. God wants to

  790. love.

  791. I don't know how

  792. God speaks to

  793. you today, but I

  794. know you'll never

  795. be happy unless

  796. you are obedient

  797. to Him.

  798. And so I would

  799. encourage you to

  800. just simply be

  801. obedient to God.

  802. If you've never

  803. given your heart and

  804. life to the Lord,

  805. I'd love to guide

  806. you in that

  807. process.

  808. If you've never

  809. been baptized as

  810. a believer, but

  811. you've got a

  812. personal relationship

  813. with Him privately

  814. and never made

  815. that public, you

  816. come.

  817. We'd love to

  818. guide you in

  819. that.

  820. Maybe God's

  821. drawing you to

  822. this church.

  823. This is where

  824. God would have

  825. you to go.

  826. I encourage you

  827. to join us.

  828. You invest in

  829. us, we invest

  830. in you, we grow

  831. together.

  832. We get it done

  833. for the kingdom's

  834. sake.

  835. Or maybe you just

  836. got something in

  837. your life that's

  838. gnawing on you

  839. today and the

  840. Holy Spirit is

  841. eating your lunch.

  842. Whether it's in

  843. the pew where you

  844. are or whether it's

  845. at this altar, it

  846. don't make any

  847. difference.

  848. Let's just get

  849. rid of it.

  850. Let's just take

  851. care of it today.

  852. Let's make a

  853. commitment to not

  854. let anything in our

  855. life be a hindrance,

  856. to be everything that

  857. God would have us

  858. to be.

  859. We're not looking

  860. for the grandiose,

  861. we're just looking

  862. for obedience.

  863. Just do whatever

  864. it takes to be

  865. everything that God

  866. would have us to be.

  867. Lord Jesus, I love

  868. you and I thank you

  869. for the life of

  870. Noah.

  871. How inspiring and

  872. how encouraging it

  873. is to me to know

  874. that you meet us

  875. where we are, you

  876. make us what we

  877. need to be, and you

  878. guide us to be

  879. everything that you

  880. have us to be, and

  881. you use us for your

  882. purposes.

  883. God, today, speak to

  884. our hearts and lives

  885. and give us the

  886. willingness and the

  887. fortitude and the

  888. obedience to do

  889. exactly what you

  890. would tell us to do.

  891. Nothing more and

  892. nothing less.

  893. Lead us right now

  894. during this time, I

  895. pray.

  896. In Jesus' name, amen.
