  1. Today we're going to be looking at 2 Kings chapter 18.

    2 Kings 18 chapter mention

  2. 2 Kings 18, 17 through 25 is where we'll begin today.

  3. And the title of my sermon is Between a Rock and a Hard Place.

  4. I'm thankful for Colton and all he does.

  5. I sent him my PowerPoint and said, here it's plain Jane screen.

  6. Make this a little more spiffy here.

  7. He sent me a message back and said,

  8. did you mean to say Between a Rock and a Hard Place?

  9. Oh man, no.

  10. No, between a rock and a hard place.

  11. And we're going to be looking at 2 Kings 18, 17 through 25.

  12. Back in 2009, I was serving Mountain View Baptist Church in Hickory, North Carolina.

  13. And we had a mission team that was getting ready to go on that Saturday to Honduras.

  14. And my wife and my 12-year-old daughter Ashley were set to be on that team.

  15. And I got a call the night before about 9 o'clock and said,

  16. we need to meet at the church, the team that's going.

  17. We need to meet.

  18. We've got a problem.

  19. So we get up there at 10 o'clock.

  20. We're supposed to, the team's going to meet at the church at 3 a.m.

  21. to leave on this trip.

  22. And we're meeting for an emergency meeting at 10 o'clock that night.

  23. They said, Honduras is experiencing a coup.

  24. They've already overthrown the president, run him out of the country.

  25. And the people are rioting, burning, looting, doing crazy stuff.

  26. Do we still want to go?

  27. Well, I was thinking half of our team, which I believe there was 10 or 12 on that team,

  28. half of them were teenagers and their parents weren't going except for my daughter.

  29. And I thought no parent in their right mind is going to let their teenage child go to a

  30. third world country during a coup without them even being with them.

  31. Well, to my surprise, I get up there and they're all like, let's go.

  32. And all the parents are like, let them go.

  33. They're like, the safest place to be is in the center of God's will.

  34. And I sat there and listened to that for a few minutes.

  35. But then I had to speak up and I said, that's not true.

  36. The safest place is not in the center of God's will.

  37. Tell that to Jesus.

  38. Tell that to the disciples.

  39. Tell that to countless Christians today who are being arrested, thrown in jail, even killed.

  40. The safest place is not always in the center of God's will.

  41. The best place to be is in the center of God's will.

  42. But it's not always the safest place.

  43. And they said, you're just scared.

  44. You don't want your wife and daughter to go.

  45. I said, I'm going to let them make that decision.

  46. I'm not going to influence it in any way.

  47. But here's what I know.

  48. If they choose to go, I'm sending them and letting them go.

  49. I'm giving them to God.

  50. And I'm praying for God to use them in whatever manner he sees fit to bring glory to his name.

  51. And if something happens to them while they're on that trip, if they were to be injured or killed,

  52. then I sent them to serve the Lord.

  53. And I trusted that God was using that for his will.

  54. Well, we prayed together as a team.

  55. And then we left and went home.

  56. And Michelle was not certain what she was going to do.

  57. And we went home about midnight.

  58. And we began to pray.

  59. Remember, they've got to be back up at the church at 3 a.m.

  60. And it's midnight.

  61. And we go home to pray, asking God what his will is for them to do.

  62. This morning, we're going to see that King Hezekiah, king of Judah, found himself in a very difficult position.

  63. You see, he was surrounded.

  64. Jerusalem was the southern kingdom.

  65. And King Hezekiah ruled Judah.

  66. Or Jerusalem at that point was the capital.

  67. And Jerusalem was surrounded by the strongest military force in all of the world.

  68. The Assyrians had already come down and conquered the northern kingdom,

  69. which is the 10 out of the 12 tribes of Israel.

  70. They were that mighty and that powerful.

  71. So how could Judah, two of the 12 tribes of Israel,

  72. how could they stand up to the Assyrian army?

  73. What should Ezekiel do?

  74. Would Ezekiel trust in the Lord?

  75. Would he put all of his faith in God and trust that God would see him through and protect them?

  76. Or conventional wisdom would have told him, surrender.

  77. Surrender to the king of Assyria.

  78. They'll be deported, but at least they would live.

  79. And the people of Judah and Benjamin were the two tribes.

  80. At least they would live.

  81. They would be deported, but they would live.

  82. Let's go to the word of God and let's begin seeing this situation in God's word in 2 Kings 18.

  83. And let's see the situation that King Hezekiah is in and find out what he does.

  84. Will he trust God or will he seek conventional wisdom?

  85. Let's read.

  86. The king of Assyria sent his supreme commander, his chief officer, and his field commander

  87. with a large army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem.

  88. They came up to Jerusalem and stopped at the aqueduct of the upper pool on the road to the washerman's field.

  89. They called for the king.

  90. And Elakim, son of Hilkiah, the palace administrator, Shebna, the secretary, and Joah, son of Asaph, the recorder, went out to them.

  91. The field commander said to them,

  92. Tell Hezekiah, this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says.

  93. On what are you basing this confidence of yours?

  94. You say you have the counsel and the might for war, but you speak only empty words.

  95. On whom are you depending that you rebel against me?

  96. Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it,

  97. such as Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all who depend on him.

  98. But if you say to me, we are depending on the Lord our God,

  99. isn't he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed,

  100. saying to Judah and Jerusalem,

  101. You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem.

  102. Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria.

  103. I will give you 2,000 horses if you can put riders on them.

  104. How can you repulse one officer of the least of my master's officials,

  105. even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

  106. Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the Lord?

  107. The Lord Himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.

  108. Let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  109. Father, we come to you today and we thank you for your word.

  110. Lord, we know that your word is sharper than any double-edged sword

  111. and pierces the depths of our being, pierces the depths of our soul.

  112. And I pray, Lord, today that you would speak to us through your word.

  113. Wherever we are, whatever circumstances we find ourselves up against,

  114. whatever challenges stand before us,

  115. I pray that you speak to us, Lord,

  116. and help us to realize that we are to keep our eyes on you

  117. and trust in you and believe in you.

  118. When the world may say not to trust you,

  119. I pray that we will.

  120. And it's in your holy name we pray. Amen.

  121. As you can see, Hezekiah really found himself between a rock and a hard place.

  122. He had the largest military force in all of the world

  123. that had surrounded Jerusalem and was demanding that he surrender.

  124. If he surrendered to the Assyrians, at least they would live.

  125. And the practice in that day and time is a conquering army would take the people,

  126. they would usually take the most educated, the most skilled, noble families,

  127. the best of the best, and they would take them and deport them

  128. and settle them somewhere else.

  129. One thing it did is it helped from rebellions rising up against them

  130. at a later time and they wouldn't have to keep,

  131. like the Assyrians wouldn't have to keep as large a force there

  132. to constantly squash down rebellions against them.

  133. But it also took those skills, that knowledge, that training,

  134. and it resettled them somewhere else where they could use that to rebuild other places.

  135. Now this is exactly what's happened to the northern kingdom.

  136. The northern kingdom had gotten so far away from God

  137. that they were worshiping fake gods, false gods, idols,

  138. gods of the nations around them.

  139. They had gotten so far away from God that God raised up the Assyrians.

  140. God did that.

  141. He raised up the Assyrians to come in and conquer them

  142. and they led them out of the area and resettled them.

  143. You know, the ten northern tribes of Israel are no more.

  144. We have no idea where they are.

  145. We have no idea what became of them

  146. because what happened is when you resettle them in other places,

  147. they began to intermarry and mix and mingle with the other people groups

  148. and they completely lost their identity.

  149. And so when we think of Israel today and we think of the Jews,

  150. it's the two southern tribes, Judah and Benjamin,

  151. that make up God's people today

  152. because the ten northern tribes vanished off the scene of history.

  153. And in chapter 17, verses 7 and 8,

  154. it tells us because they sinned against God,

  155. because they forgot the covenant that they had made with God

  156. when they entered into the promised land.

  157. They forgot and they began worshiping other gods,

  158. doing other things.

  159. They had gone so far that they even sacrificed children to false gods.

  160. They were throwing their babies in fire as acts of worship of these false gods.

  161. And so God raised up the Assyrians, conquered them, and led them out.

  162. You know, Hezekiah, again, is between a rock and a hard place.

  163. Oftentimes the struggles that we face in life are bigger than we can imagine.

  164. Some of the struggles that we face are challenges or obstacles that we face in life.

  165. They're bigger than us, aren't they?

  166. They're bigger than our ability to overcome and deal with.

  167. However, what we're going to see this morning

  168. is that if we will learn to keep our eyes on God,

  169. no matter what struggle, no matter what challenge,

  170. no matter what obstacle you face today,

  171. if we learn to keep our eyes on God

  172. rather than the situation and circumstances,

  173. we keep our eyes on God

  174. and we continue to live in obedience to Him,

  175. we will learn that God will be with us

  176. in the midst of those struggles,

  177. in the midst of the pain,

  178. in the midst of the sorrows,

  179. and He will use those situations and circumstances

  180. to mold and shape us and help us

  181. to be the people that He wants us to be.

  182. He will see us through

  183. and He will bring us through.

  184. I know everyone in here can probably look back on your life

  185. and you can see challenges that you've faced in life

  186. and they were hard, difficult circumstances.

  187. Probably many tears were shed.

  188. But as you look back,

  189. you can see the hand of God

  190. in the midst of those struggles and circumstances

  191. being with you.

  192. Sometimes God uses those challenges that we face in life

  193. to develop character within us.

  194. Sometimes God uses those circumstances

  195. to remove sin out of our lives.

  196. Maybe we have sin.

  197. Maybe we have rebellion and stubbornness in our heart.

  198. Maybe unforgiveness of someone in our life.

  199. And God uses situations and circumstances

  200. in our lives to remove that out of us.

  201. Sometimes He's preparing us for future work

  202. that He has for us.

  203. We think about Joseph of the Old Testament.

  204. He went through a great deal,

  205. but God was using that to prepare him

  206. for what He had in store for him.

  207. And sometimes God is just simply testing our faith.

  208. Testing to see if we will stand firm

  209. and stand strong and believe in Him

  210. and obey Him and the things that He's called us to do.

  211. What struggle are you facing today?

  212. What challenges are you up against?

  213. You know, they say that we're all faced,

  214. we're either going into a problem

  215. or a struggle or a storm.

  216. We're in a storm or we're coming out of a storm.

  217. That's pretty much everybody's life, right?

  218. We only spend a short period of time on the mountaintop

  219. before we go back into something.

  220. So what are you facing today?

  221. What are you getting ready to go into?

  222. What are you coming out of?

  223. And let me ask you this.

  224. What struggle have you faced

  225. or you might be getting ready to face

  226. that God cannot handle?

  227. What struggle or challenge or obstacle

  228. can God not handle?

  229. Luke 1.37 says,

  230. For nothing is impossible with God.

  231. Also Romans 8.28 says,

  232. And we know that in all things

  233. God works for the good of those who love Him.

  234. So whatever hardship, difficulty, struggle, pain

  235. that you might be facing,

  236. if we keep our eyes on the Lord

  237. and we stay focused on Him

  238. and we continue to walk in obedience to Him,

  239. then we have to realize that God is working

  240. in the midst of all of that

  241. and He will be with us in the storm.

  242. He may not stop the storm immediately.

  243. He may not remove the pain immediately.

  244. He may leave us there for a time.

  245. But He's working to accomplish His purpose

  246. and His will.

  247. I think of the Apostle Paul.

  248. The Apostle Paul had a very painful thorn in his flesh.

  249. And he prayed three times for God

  250. to remove that thorn.

  251. What was God's answer?

  252. Yeah, but He just said,

  253. No.

  254. My grace is sufficient.

  255. He said, No.

  256. He didn't remove the thorn.

  257. Why?

  258. Because God was using that thorn

  259. for a purpose in Paul's life.

  260. Now we don't know what the thorn was,

  261. but we do know Paul had begun to get prideful,

  262. puffed up,

  263. because God had been using him to do some mighty things.

  264. And God was using that thorn

  265. to kind of humble him a little bit

  266. and bring him back down.

  267. You know, God will work the same way in our lives.

  268. It may not be a thorn like Paul faced.

  269. It may not be pride and humility that you need.

  270. But God will be working in the circumstances

  271. and situations in our lives

  272. to mold and shape and develop us

  273. into the people that he needs us

  274. and wants us to be.

  275. Israel had been led into the promised land by Joshua.

  276. And God had clearly told Israel

  277. through Moses, before Moses died,

  278. and now through Joshua,

  279. he clearly told them,

  280. If you will go into the promised land

  281. and you will honor me, obey me,

  282. stay faithful to me,

  283. then I will bless you.

  284. But if you do not,

  285. you know, if you go back and look at that scripture,

  286. you'll notice that God had about 15 verses

  287. where he says, I will bless you.

  288. But do you realize there's about 50 verses

  289. where he warns them and says,

  290. But if you do not,

  291. I will curse you.

  292. I will fight against you.

  293. He wanted them to clearly know

  294. and clearly understand

  295. that if they forgot the covenant

  296. that he had with them,

  297. if they disobeyed him,

  298. if they walked in sinfulness

  299. or worshiped other gods,

  300. then the one true God

  301. would fight against them

  302. and curse them.

  303. Unfortunately, the northern kingdom

  304. they forgot.

  305. Another generation arose

  306. and they completely forgot

  307. the covenant they had with God

  308. and they had become disobedient.

  309. They began to worship other gods.

  310. They abandoned their faith.

  311. And as I said a minute ago,

  312. they had sunk so low

  313. that they even sacrificed their children

  314. in the fire in worship

  315. to these other gods.

  316. Well, God is a patient God,

  317. slow to anger.

  318. And so he sent the prophets.

  319. He sent prophets to warn them

  320. and tell them,

  321. you know,

  322. to remind them

  323. of the covenant they had

  324. and that they needed

  325. to come back to the Lord.

  326. But the Jews were very stubborn,

  327. hard-headed people

  328. and they didn't listen,

  329. did they?

  330. Many times they killed the prophets

  331. or they abused the prophets

  332. or they just didn't listen

  333. to them at all.

  334. And so God raised up,

  335. God had to raise up the Assyrians

  336. to come in and to conquer

  337. the northern kingdom.

  338. Today, I look at the United States

  339. of America

  340. and I think about a nation

  341. that was founded and built

  342. upon faith in Jesus Christ,

  343. a land that religious freedom,

  344. but when it was founded,

  345. that meant religious freedom

  346. to worship Jesus Christ.

  347. And yet I look at a nation

  348. that a new generation is arising

  349. that has forgotten much of that.

  350. And it's now become socially unacceptable

  351. to go back and teach

  352. that we were founded

  353. upon faith in Jesus Christ.

  354. You want to know why

  355. the United States of America

  356. is one of the greatest nations

  357. in the world?

  358. It's because we were built

  359. upon faith in Jesus Christ.

  360. And yet now we see a nation

  361. that is drifting further and further

  362. and further away from God.

  363. If you go out west,

  364. do you know what the percentage

  365. of evangelical Christians

  366. live in Washington State?

  367. I can go to Africa

  368. and find nations

  369. that are more Christian

  370. than Washington State

  371. or Oregon.

  372. These 3%,

  373. 3% are evangelical Christians

  374. in places like Seattle

  375. and Oregon

  376. and out west

  377. and then up north

  378. it's not a whole lot better.

  379. But you know what really worries me?

  380. What really worries me today

  381. is not the condition

  382. of the lost people

  383. in our country.

  384. What concerns me

  385. is the church.

  386. What really worries me

  387. are those who are children of God

  388. that are allowing the things

  389. of the world

  390. to be adopted into their lives

  391. and living by the world's standards

  392. and yet claiming

  393. to be Christians.

  394. That's what concerns me more.

  395. People often talk about

  396. is God going to destroy

  397. the United States?

  398. Well,

  399. I'm more concerned about

  400. us giving an account to God

  401. as His children

  402. and people of God

  403. and how we live.

  404. Are we being faithful?

  405. Are we being obedient

  406. to the things He's called us

  407. to do in His Word?

  408. Or are we allowing

  409. trends,

  410. you know,

  411. things that go on

  412. in the world

  413. to be adopted

  414. into our lives

  415. and our patterns?

  416. Are we doing

  417. the things God

  418. has called us to do?

  419. That's what we need

  420. to be concerned about

  421. and focused on today

  422. is the church.

  423. And are we being

  424. the church?

  425. Are we going out

  426. into the world

  427. and proclaiming

  428. the gospel

  429. and reaching lost people

  430. with a message

  431. of forgiveness?

  432. Not of hatred

  433. and anger

  434. and judgmental,

  435. but forgiveness

  436. and love.

  437. Which, by the way,

  438. I forgot this

  439. in the announcement time.

  440. Then I aimed to do it again

  441. when I got up here

  442. and I forgot again.

  443. But we had a great week

  444. this week

  445. with Vacation Bible School.

  446. We had a great week

  447. and I wanted to say

  448. thank you to everyone

  449. who participated in that.

  450. If you were here

  451. serving in any capacity,

  452. if you helped decorate

  453. in advance,

  454. if you put a yard sign

  455. out in your yard,

  456. I want to say thank you

  457. because that is

  458. one of the tools

  459. that we can use

  460. to reach,

  461. you know,

  462. a lost world.

  463. We had a lot of children

  464. who came here.

  465. I helped teach

  466. the Bible story

  467. and I was blown away

  468. at some of the knowledge

  469. that a lot of these

  470. children did have.

  471. But we also had children

  472. here that probably

  473. don't ever go to church

  474. anywhere except

  475. for Vacation Bible School.

  476. So I do want to say

  477. thank you to everybody

  478. that helped be a part

  479. of that in any way.

  480. Now during the time

  481. that the northern kingdom

  482. was being conquered

  483. and destroyed

  484. by the Assyrians,

  485. King Hezekiah

  486. ruled the southern kingdom

  487. or Judah.

  488. Now Hezekiah's father

  489. was Ahaz

  490. and he was a very evil king

  491. and he did many things wrong

  492. in the eyes of the Lord.

  493. However,

  494. Hezekiah,

  495. he didn't follow

  496. the example of his father.

  497. He was one of the greatest kings

  498. next to David

  499. that ever ruled over Israel.

  500. He honored God

  501. and he actually went through

  502. and tore down

  503. all the Asher poles

  504. and the places of worship.

  505. He did everything

  506. in his power

  507. to lead Judah

  508. back to being faithful

  509. to the Lord.

  510. And as a result,

  511. God was with him

  512. and he was successful

  513. in everything that he did.

  514. It was his faith

  515. in the Lord

  516. that caused him

  517. to rebel

  518. against Assyria

  519. to begin with

  520. and not pay the tribute

  521. that he was supposed to pay.

  522. So what that did

  523. is the Assyrians

  524. got angry

  525. and they invaded Judah.

  526. And this reminds us

  527. that sometimes

  528. our faith

  529. cost us something.

  530. To have faith

  531. in the Lord

  532. and be obedient

  533. and faithful

  534. is not about

  535. an easy walk

  536. in the park

  537. and everything's

  538. going to be roses

  539. every day.

  540. Sometimes we have

  541. to take a stand

  542. for the Lord

  543. and honor Him

  544. and it will come

  545. at a cost.

  546. It will come

  547. as an expense.

  548. But faith in the Lord

  549. is not always

  550. about God

  551. just making everything

  552. smooth sailing

  553. in our lives.

  554. Sometimes

  555. if you look

  556. in the New Testament

  557. especially

  558. there's a cost to pay.

  559. When Michelle

  560. and Ashley

  561. were thinking

  562. about going

  563. to Honduras

  564. we prayed

  565. and we began praying

  566. and God

  567. just gave them

  568. an overwhelming

  569. sense of peace

  570. to go.

  571. Go to Honduras.

  572. Do not let fear

  573. keep you from going.

  574. And so we quickly

  575. went to bed

  576. they got about

  577. an hour of sleep

  578. got back up

  579. got ready to go

  580. to Honduras

  581. and they got on

  582. that plane

  583. and flew to Miami.

  584. When they got

  585. to Miami

  586. there were people

  587. flying from Honduras

  588. other mission teams

  589. coming back

  590. into the country

  591. and they were saying

  592. you can't go.

  593. Do not go.

  594. It's too dangerous.

  595. There's looting

  596. there's burning

  597. there's destruction

  598. people are being killed

  599. do not go.

  600. Well our team

  601. was faced with

  602. a challenge once again

  603. and they got together

  604. the adults

  605. and they discussed it

  606. and they prayed.

  607. Well that time

  608. my daughter Ashley

  609. don't tell us

  610. she's not here today

  611. so don't tell her

  612. I said this.

  613. Again she was only 12

  614. but she was scared

  615. and she started crying

  616. and didn't want to get on.

  617. Michelle just grabbed her arm

  618. got on that plane

  619. and they went.

  620. And you know what?

  621. God protected them.

  622. God kept them safe

  623. and he sent them

  624. to the mountains

  625. where people

  626. had been praying

  627. for years

  628. for God

  629. to send somebody

  630. to them.

  631. And they were able

  632. to also meet

  633. a little girl

  634. that we had been

  635. sponsoring in an orphanage

  636. there.

  637. They were able

  638. to spend time

  639. with her

  640. and meet her

  641. for the very first time.

  642. It was a great experience.

  643. But it could have

  644. cost them.

  645. It could have turned out

  646. very differently.

  647. They went

  648. knowing that they

  649. gave their lives

  650. to the Lord

  651. and asked God

  652. to use their life

  653. in a way

  654. that would bring

  655. honor to him.

  656. Hezekiah sent a message

  657. to the king

  658. of Assyria

  659. stating that he

  660. had sinned against him.

  661. He was sorry

  662. that he had rebelled

  663. against him

  664. and that he would

  665. collect the money

  666. the gold

  667. and the silver

  668. that the king

  669. of Assyria

  670. was demanding

  671. if he would

  672. just withdraw.

  673. And he was

  674. demanding

  675. 11 tons

  676. of silver

  677. and 1 ton

  678. of gold.

  679. And so Hezekiah

  680. this is the one

  681. blemish

  682. on King Hezekiah's

  683. account

  684. is that he went

  685. through the land

  686. and he took

  687. the silver and gold

  688. as much as he could find.

  689. He even went

  690. into the temple

  691. and he took

  692. the silver

  693. and the gold

  694. out of the temple

  695. that was

  696. decorating

  697. and designing

  698. the temple

  699. and he gave it

  700. to the king

  701. of Assyria.

  702. But what happened

  703. much like

  704. sometimes when we

  705. play with fire

  706. you're going

  707. to get burned.

  708. You know what?

  709. The king

  710. of Assyria

  711. did.

  712. He took

  713. the gold

  714. and silver

  715. and he did

  716. not withdraw.

  717. He besieged

  718. Jerusalem

  719. and he came

  720. against them

  721. to conquer

  722. them

  723. and defeat

  724. them.

  725. And Hezekiah

  726. found himself

  727. in a time

  728. of crisis

  729. with a fundamental

  730. question

  731. that is just

  732. as fundamental

  733. for us

  734. today.

  735. What do you

  736. believe

  737. about God?

  738. What do you

  739. truly believe

  740. about God?

  741. Is God

  742. worthy

  743. to be trusted?

  744. Can we

  745. really trust

  746. God?

  747. Can He really

  748. fulfill His

  749. promises

  750. to us

  751. today?

  752. If Hezekiah

  753. trusted God

  754. and he

  755. stood up

  756. to Assyria

  757. and God

  758. was not able

  759. to do

  760. what He

  761. said He

  762. would do

  763. then the

  764. people of

  765. Judah

  766. would have

  767. been killed

  768. and destroyed.

  769. They would

  770. have been

  771. wiped out

  772. as bad

  773. as we see

  774. on the news

  775. in Gaza.

  776. They would

  777. have been

  778. mutilated

  779. by the Assyrians

  780. if God

  781. was not able

  782. to do

  783. what He

  784. said.

  785. And so

  786. Hezekiah

  787. being the

  788. man of God

  789. that he

  790. was,

  791. he consulted

  792. the prophet

  793. Isaiah

  794. to know

  795. what he

  796. should do

  797. which is

  798. really good

  799. advice,

  800. really good

  801. example here

  802. of what

  803. King Hezekiah

  804. did.

  805. He went

  806. to a prophet,

  807. he asked

  808. for a prophet

  809. and then in a

  810. minute we'll

  811. see that even

  812. after getting

  813. the word

  814. from the

  815. prophet he

  816. went back

  817. to God

  818. in prayer

  819. seeking God.

  820. But look

  821. at 2 Kings

    2 Kings 19:5

  822. 19 verses

  823. 5 and 7.

  824. Should be

  825. on the...

  826. There we

  827. go.

  828. When King

  829. Hezekiah's

  830. officials came

  831. to Isaiah,

  832. Isaiah said

  833. to them,

  834. Tell your

  835. master this

  836. is what the

  837. Lord says.

  838. Do not be

  839. afraid of

  840. what you

  841. have heard,

  842. those words

  843. with which

  844. the underlings

  845. of the king

  846. of Assyria

  847. have blasphemed

  848. me.

  849. Listen,

  850. when he

  851. hears a

  852. certain report

  853. I will make

  854. him want to

  855. return to

  856. his own

  857. country and

  858. there I will

  859. have him cut

  860. down with

  861. the sword.

  862. God is

  863. saying through

  864. Isaiah the

  865. prophet,

  866. don't worry

  867. about the

  868. Assyrians.

  869. I can handle

  870. them.

  871. I can deal

  872. with them.

  873. They're not

  874. going to

  875. conquer this

  876. city.

  877. And so

  878. Hezekiah,

  879. still a bit

  880. concerned and

  881. worried,

  882. he goes to

  883. the temple

  884. and he

  885. begins to

  886. pray,

  887. wanting to

  888. know for

  889. sure,

  890. is that the

  891. message God

  892. was giving?

  893. And so

  894. once again,

  895. God gives

  896. a message to

  897. Isaiah,

  898. to give to

  899. King

  900. Hezekiah.

  901. And it's

  902. in verses

  903. 32-36 of

  904. 2 Kings 19.

  905. Therefore,

  906. this is what

  907. the Lord

  908. says concerning

  909. the king of

  910. Assyria.

  911. He will not

  912. enter this

  913. city or

  914. shoot an

  915. arrow here.

  916. He will not

  917. come before

  918. it was

  919. shield or

  920. build a

  921. siege ramp

  922. against it.

  923. By the way

  924. he came,

  925. he will

  926. return.

  927. He will not

  928. enter this

  929. city,

  930. declares the

  931. Lord.

  932. I will

  933. defend this

  934. city and

  935. save it

  936. for my

  937. sake and

  938. for the

  939. sake of

  940. David my

  941. servant.

  942. That night

  943. the angel

  944. of the Lord

  945. went out

  946. and put to

  947. death

  948. 185,000

  949. in the

  950. Assyrian

  951. camp.

  952. When the

  953. people got

  954. up the

  955. next morning

  956. there were

  957. all the

  958. dead bodies.

  959. So Sennacherib,

  960. king of

  961. Assyria,

  962. broke camp

  963. and withdrew.

  964. He returned

  965. to Nineveh

  966. and he

  967. stayed there.

  968. God was

  969. showing that

  970. he can

  971. handle just

  972. about anything.

  973. He can

  974. handle anything.

  975. You've got

  976. the largest

  977. military in

  978. all the world

  979. at that time

  980. surrounding you

  981. and he sent

  982. an angel,

  983. one angel,

  984. that went

  985. through the

  986. camp and

  987. he destroyed

  988. or killed

  989. 185,000

  990. Assyrian

  991. soldiers.

  992. And so

  993. the king

  994. of Assyria

  995. withdrew

  996. and he

  997. went back

  998. to Nineveh.

  999. God showed

  1000. king Hezekiah

  1001. that his

  1002. faith in

  1003. him

  1004. was real.

  1005. That he

  1006. it was

  1007. worthy

  1008. to put his

  1009. faith

  1010. in God.

  1011. That he

  1012. put his

  1013. faith and

  1014. trust

  1015. that God

  1016. would defend

  1017. them and

  1018. God did

  1019. just that.

  1020. No one

  1021. has ever

  1022. lived

  1023. without having

  1024. problems or

  1025. crisis to

  1026. arise in

  1027. our life.

  1028. We see

  1029. throughout

  1030. the scriptures

  1031. faithful servants

  1032. such as

  1033. Hezekiah

  1034. facing great

  1035. challenges.

  1036. You know

  1037. it can be

  1038. hard to

  1039. understand

  1040. sometimes

  1041. why God

  1042. allows us

  1043. to go

  1044. through

  1045. difficulties

  1046. and hardships

  1047. and we

  1048. pray and we

  1049. ask for

  1050. God to

  1051. solve the

  1052. problems,

  1053. to deal

  1054. with situations

  1055. and circumstances

  1056. and he

  1057. doesn't always

  1058. do it when

  1059. we want.

  1060. And it's

  1061. hard for us

  1062. to understand

  1063. and sometimes

  1064. we get angry

  1065. at God or

  1066. we get mad

  1067. at God and

  1068. we wonder

  1069. where are

  1070. you God?

  1071. Why are you

  1072. not solving

  1073. this problem

  1074. for me?

  1075. But if we'll

  1076. learn a lesson

  1077. here today that

  1078. God is more

  1079. than able and

  1080. he works in

  1081. situations, he

  1082. works in

  1083. circumstances of

  1084. our lives,

  1085. maybe not the

  1086. way we want

  1087. him to,

  1088. maybe not as

  1089. quickly as we

  1090. want him to,

  1091. but he works

  1092. in his

  1093. timetable and

  1094. in a manner

  1095. that he brings

  1096. about his

  1097. purpose and

  1098. his will in

  1099. our lives.

  1100. Everyone faces

  1101. problems at

  1102. some time or

  1103. another, but

  1104. how each

  1105. person responds

  1106. to those

  1107. problems or

  1108. those challenges

  1109. is what makes

  1110. the difference.

  1111. Do we respond

  1112. in faith or

  1113. do we respond

  1114. in fear and

  1115. doubt?

  1116. King Hezekiah

  1117. faced what

  1118. the world

  1119. described as

  1120. a hopeless

  1121. situation.

  1122. He was

  1123. surrounded by

  1124. a superior

  1125. army, one

  1126. that had

  1127. already destroyed

  1128. many lands

  1129. and ten of

  1130. the twelve

  1131. tribes of

  1132. Israel, but

  1133. Hezekiah trusted

  1134. in the Lord

  1135. and the Lord

  1136. delivered him

  1137. in a manner

  1138. that only God

  1139. could do.

  1140. It's my hope

  1141. and my prayer

  1142. today that we

  1143. will take a

  1144. lesson from

  1145. King Hezekiah

  1146. and we will

  1147. realize that

  1148. whatever challenge

  1149. you're up against

  1150. today, whatever

  1151. obstacles stand in

  1152. your way, whatever

  1153. struggles you're

  1154. enduring, don't

  1155. focus on them.

  1156. Focus on the

  1157. Lord.

  1158. Stay focused

  1159. on Him and

  1160. He will more

  1161. than be willing

  1162. to handle those

  1163. situations and

  1164. circumstances and

  1165. resolve them in a

  1166. manner that empowers

  1167. us, builds us

  1168. strength, gives us

  1169. character and helps

  1170. us to maybe serve

  1171. Him in a greater

  1172. capacity in the

  1173. future.

  1174. And most of us

  1175. can look back and

  1176. we can see where

  1177. God has worked in

  1178. times past.

  1179. let those experiences

  1180. encourage us

  1181. today to stay

  1182. faithful and

  1183. obedient and

  1184. trust in the

  1185. Lord.

  1186. Today I don't

  1187. know what

  1188. challenges you're

  1189. up against.

  1190. I don't know what

  1191. circumstances that

  1192. you're fighting.

  1193. I don't know what

  1194. painful things are

  1195. going on in your

  1196. life.

  1197. But I hope that

  1198. you will hold

  1199. tightly to God to

  1200. work in your life,

  1201. build your faith,

  1202. build your strength

  1203. and know that God

  1204. is able.

  1205. Let's go to the

  1206. Lord in prayer.

  1207. Father we thank

  1208. you for this word

  1209. today.

  1210. We thank you for

  1211. your word.

1212. And I pray Lord that

1213. you speak to each of

  1214. our hearts.

  1215. We're all facing

  1216. different things.

  1217. We're all facing

  1218. different circumstances.

  1219. We all have

  1220. different painful

  1221. experiences in our

  1222. lives that we've

  1223. gone through.

1224. But I pray Lord that

1225. we keep our eyes on

  1226. you.

  1227. and we trust in

  1228. you Lord.

  1229. And that we will

  1230. know that you are

  1231. working to help us
