  1. and faithful to the Lord.

  2. If you have your Bibles, I want you to turn to 1 Peter.

  3. 1 Peter chapter 5, we're in a series called The Real War

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  4. because I am convinced that we are fighting battles

  5. that are unseen but very felt.

  6. And we need to understand because we can't quite see it

  7. with the human eye.

  8. We can see the evidence of it.

  9. We need clarity on what exactly we're facing.

  10. And how do you fight or stand against something

  11. when you don't even know what you're fighting?

  12. When I was a child, my dad went out one night

  13. to walk the dog.

  14. And it was a night and a walk that he's never forgotten.

  15. He spoke of it a couple of weeks ago,

  16. and we've never forgotten it either.

  17. It was in the dead of winter in the upper peninsula of Michigan

  18. where my father was stationed at Kincheloe Air Force Base.

  19. That's about 11 miles from the Canada line

  20. and cold is not the word for it.

  21. I walked to school in three foot of snow.

  22. It was not uphill and I was not barefooted,

  23. but when a five-year-old walks in three foot of snow,

  24. it is uphill.

  25. And when it's ten below, you are barefooted,

  26. no matter how much you got on your feet.

  27. We had a well-trained dog and we had a big set of woods behind the house

  28. and he could let that dog run at night

  29. and Dad took him out for a walk.

  30. One night, the dog got into something.

  31. Dad went running to find out what was wrong

  32. and they both got sprayed by a skunk.

  33. When they came back to the house, neither were welcome.

  34. But we had to let them in because they would have died.

  35. It was so cold.

  36. And so I'm just going to tell you,

  37. I don't know how else to tell you,

  38. Pop stank for days.

  39. I mean stank.

  40. And we had to roll the windows down in that Buick station wagon

  41. in the dead of winter just to survive

  42. when we rode with him for several days.

  43. It helps to know what you're fighting.

  44. It really does.

  45. And before you go into battle.

  46. So I want to be clear.

  47. You're in a war.

  48. And you'll face some battles.

  49. Thank God the war's been won,

  50. but there's still squirmishes going on.

  51. There's still battles being fought.

  52. And if you don't realize that,

  53. you're going to lose way too many of them.

  54. It helps to know who you're going to take a stand against.

  55. Who are you dealing with?

  56. And we can find out a lot about the evil one

  57. when we study the names that he is called in Scripture.

  58. These names are given as descriptive titles

  59. of what he stands for.

  60. And his traits are shown through these names.

  61. But I want to begin by looking at Peter's advice to us.

  62. Thank God's also inspired by the Holy Spirit of God

  63. and given to us by the Lord.

  64. 1 Peter 5, verse 6 says this.

    1 Peter 5:6

  65. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God

  66. so at the proper time he may exalt you,

  67. casting all your anxieties on him

  68. because he cares for you.

  69. Be sober-minded.

  70. Be watchful.

  71. Listen now.

  72. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion

  73. seeking someone to devour.

  74. Resist him.

  75. Firm in your faith,

  76. knowing that the same kind of sufferings

  77. will be experienced by the brotherhood throughout the world.

  78. And after you've suffered a little while,

  79. the God of all grace,

  80. who's called you to his eternal glory in Christ,

  81. this is worth underlining, folks,

  82. will himself restore, confirm, strengthen,

  83. and establish you.

  84. To him be the dominion forever and ever.

  85. Amen.

  86. I don't have time this morning to talk about restoring

  87. and confirming and strengthening and establishing,

  88. but man, I wish I did

  89. because that is good stuff.

  90. That's not our topic this morning,

  91. but I'm telling you,

  92. I read that at 9 o'clock,

  93. and it blessed my heart,

  94. and I read it again,

  95. and it blesses my heart

  96. to know that we have a God that's there for us

  97. when we need him,

  98. regardless of what we're going through,

  99. and I'm going to tell you what you're going through

  100. because we can learn a lot

  101. about the evil one

  102. by the way God defines him through his word.

  103. And so I want to look at various names

  104. and learn about his schemes

  105. because his schemes are the real problem.

  106. I want you to hear me.

  107. It is not our kids that's the problem.

  108. I know what Sunday mornings are like in the home, okay?

  109. It's not our kids.

  110. It's not our spouses.

  111. It's not our opponents.

  112. It's not the bullies in our life.

  113. It's not the nemesis in our life.

  114. It is the demonic schemes of the evil one,

  115. and oftentimes that is seen in other people's lives,

  116. and oftentimes it's seen in our lives.

  117. But when we study the names of God in Scripture,

  118. we learn about his attributes

  119. and the ways that he leads us

  120. and ministers us and helps us,

  121. and by understanding the names of the devil,

  122. we learn the way that he steals from us.

  123. We learn the ways that he attempts to destroy us,

  124. that he strives to kill us.

  125. And the first one I want to talk about is one,

  126. and I'm going to talk about real popular ones today,

  127. ones you've heard of probably,

  128. but in our passage, he is called the devil,

  129. which means the slanderer or the accuser.

  130. I call him the whisperer,

  131. and the reason why is do you ever notice

  132. when you have something good and juicy on somebody

  133. and you want to tell somebody else,

  134. you just look around, you lean in,

  135. and you say it real soft.

  136. Y'all don't know what I'm talking about

  137. because y'all ain't never told anything juicy on anybody,

  138. have you?

  139. Praise the Lord.

  140. We got one problem solved.

  141. That's what the devil does.

  142. He leans in,

  143. gets our attention,

  144. and whispers to us.

  145. Now I want you to hear me.

  146. He's not after you.

  147. He's after Christ.

  148. He does not want to discredit you.

  149. He wants to discredit Christ.

  150. However, if he can discredit the people of God,

  151. he can discredit God.

  152. And he does that through his whispers.

  153. He tells the lost,

  154. Jesus is not the only way.

  155. That is, as long as you are sincere in what you believe,

  156. that God will save you.

  157. You can be a Muslim.

  158. You can be a Mormon.

  159. As long as you're a churchgoer,

  160. then you're safe.

  161. And I want you to be clear about something.

  162. Don't ever think that your presence here,

  163. or that a baptism that you've experienced,

  164. will get you to heaven.

  165. Because it won't.

  166. Sometimes it causes confusion.

  167. Because it's not real in your life.

  168. If you've not committed your life to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  169. if you've not admitted the sin in your life,

  170. and asked him to forgive you,

  171. and to cleanse you,

  172. and to come into your life,

  173. and to change you,

  174. you'll have hell to pay.

  175. There's no confirmation process.

  176. There's no Bible knowledge that you can have.

  177. There's no grandpa in ministry

  178. that'll save your soul from an eternal hell.

  179. It only comes when we surrender our lives to the Lord.

  180. And the devil don't want you to realize that.

  181. The devil don't want you to understand that.

  182. Just like the serpent in the garden,

  183. a manifestation of the evil one himself,

  184. said to Eve in the garden,

  185. and he said,

  186. did God really say?

  187. Did he really?

  188. You see, the devil is a liar,

  189. he's a slanderer,

  190. and he whispers to the lost.

  191. But not only the lost,

  192. he whispers to the saved.

  193. He'll make you doubt your salvation.

  194. He'll tell you Christians,

  195. well, they don't really sin.

  196. Look at you.

  197. He'll tell you that God gets tired of you.

  198. He'll tell you there's no need for you

  199. to confess that to God again.

  200. Because God's written you off.

  201. He'll make you doubt your salvation,

  202. and doubt will steal your joy.

  203. And when your joy is stolen,

  204. you won't share your faith with others.

  205. You're not even sure you have it.

  206. You sure ain't gonna share it.

  207. And the state of being unforgiven

  208. because of a lack of confession

  209. will serve,

  210. listen to me, Christian,

  211. unconfessed sin serves as a facilitator

  212. for stumbling blocks in your life,

  213. for strongholds in your life.

  214. You let sin just fester in your life.

  215. It's like watching grass grow in your yard,

  216. hoping it's gonna be shorter by next week.

  217. We're in the dead of summer, folks.

  218. It ain't gonna get shorter.

  219. It's gonna be worse.

  220. And so it is with an unforgiving heart.

  221. As our passage says,

  222. he's prowling around,

  223. looking for an opportunity.

  224. He'll lie about God.

  225. He'll lie about others.

  226. He'll tell you not to forgive others.

  227. He'll tell you to hold it against them.

  228. He'll put thoughts in your head

  229. about how people are just out to get you.

  230. How somehow you're the focus

  231. of everyone else out to get you.

  232. Get you so keyed up,

  233. so full of hate and worry.

  234. You're so pondering on that

  235. when somebody says hey to you,

  236. it's like they said boo,

  237. scares you to death.

  238. Afraid they're coming after you.

  239. Why?

  240. Because of his whispers.

  241. Because of the things he says to you.

  242. He'll whisper to you about God.

  243. He'll whisper to you about yourself.

  244. He'll whisper to you about others.

  245. He'll lie to you.

  246. He'll slander.

  247. He's the devil.

  248. But he's also called Satan.

  249. And whereas devil is

  250. a transliteration of the Greek,

  251. Satan

  252. comes from the Hebrew language,

  253. which the majority of the Old Testament

  254. is written in.

  255. And it means adversary or accuser.

  256. That is the word that's used

  257. in Job chapter 1,

    Job 1:6

  258. verse 6 and 7.

  259. When Satan walks into the courts of heaven

  260. and the Lord says,

  261. where have you been?

  262. Now let me just say this.

  263. God never asks questions

  264. because he don't know the answer.

  265. God will ask you questions.

  266. Not audible.

  267. Louder than that.

  268. In your heart.

  269. He knows the answer.

  270. You need to know the answer.

  271. And so God confronts us sometimes

  272. with questions.

  273. He does that in Scripture as well.

  274. He didn't have to ask Eve

  275. where they'd been.

  276. He didn't have to ask them that.

  277. He knew where they'd been.

  278. He wanted them to face that.

  279. And he does the same thing.

  280. So when we see this question

  281. that he's asked,

  282. he's not asking it

  283. because he don't know

  284. where the evil one is.

  285. He's asking it

  286. so we can understand that.

  287. And he answers,

  288. Satan answers,

  289. I've been going to and fro

  290. on the earth.

  291. Sounds a lot like the passage

  292. I read in 1 Peter chapter 5.

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  293. He's like a lurker.

  294. Satan's walking around

  295. looking to see

  296. what he can get into.

  297. What he can mess up.

  298. Kind of like a group of punks

  299. walking around

  300. or riding around

  301. the neighborhood at night,

  302. just midnight,

  303. just looking for something.

  304. Up to no good.

  305. And that same word Satan

  306. is used in 1 Chronicles

    1 Chronicles 21:1

  307. chapter 21 verse 1.

  308. When Satan incites David

  309. to number Israel.

  310. In other words,

  311. what he said was

  312. take a survey

  313. and find out

  314. how powerful you really are.

  315. Do you really know

  316. how big this army is, David?

  317. Why don't you just

  318. get them to count?

  319. And so David

  320. wells up a little bit.

  321. He goes to Joab,

  322. his commander,

  323. and tells him

  324. to take a census

  325. of the army.

  326. And I want you

  327. to listen to Joab's response.

  328. And I want you

  329. to notice in the text

  330. where the word

  331. Lord is capitalized,

  332. okay,

  333. and where it's

  334. in small case

  335. because when he's speaking

  336. and it's in small case,

  337. he's calling David Lord,

  338. not because he's his savior,

  339. but because that was

  340. a title given

  341. to somebody

  342. who you're under.

  343. It means sir.

  344. It means master,

  345. commander,

  346. whatever you want

  347. to call it.

  348. Notice what he says.

  349. He says,

  350. may the Lord,

  351. that's the Lord,

  352. add to his people

  353. a hundred times

  354. as many as there are.

  355. Are they not,

  356. my Lord the king,

  357. all of them,

  358. my Lord's servants?

  359. Why then should

  360. my Lord require this?

  361. Why should it be

  362. a cause of guilt

  363. for Israel?

  364. But the king's word

  365. prevailed against Joab,

  366. so Joab departed

  367. and went throughout Israel

  368. and came back

  369. to Jerusalem.

  370. Now what Joab's saying is,

  371. listen,

  372. God's got this.

  373. We don't need

  374. to count these folks.

  375. Don't you know,

  376. David,

  377. that everybody

  378. is behind you.

  379. Everybody will rise up.

  380. No matter what it takes,

  381. we'll make sure

  382. we get the job done.

  383. We don't need

  384. to do this.

  385. Don't take pride

  386. in your numbers.

  387. Trust God

  388. to take care

  389. of the matter.

  390. David wouldn't listen.

  391. He got the men counted

  392. and then he welled up

  393. with pride.

  394. But verse 7 says,

  395. but God was displeased

  396. with this thing

  397. and he struck Israel.

  398. My friend,

  399. that is exactly

  400. what Satan will do.

  401. He will fill you

  402. with pride

  403. and he will use pride

  404. to lead folks

  405. to fall.

  406. Satan is mentioned

  407. in the book

  408. of Zechariah

  409. and in that situation,

  410. he's piling up

  411. insults

  412. on a man

  413. named Joshua,

  414. the high priest

  415. who came before

  416. the Lord's presence

  417. and when he came

  418. before the Lord's presence,

  419. he was unfit.

  420. He was dirty.

  421. He was not right.

  422. And Satan

  423. is just piling

  424. on the insults

  425. and we live

  426. much of our lives

  427. unfit.

  428. And every time

  429. we're stained,

  430. every time

  431. we're dirty,

  432. every time

  433. we're unconfessed

  434. before the Lord,

  435. it opens us up

  436. to the evil one's

  437. accusations

  438. and he'll make us

  439. squirm

  440. like the snake

  441. that he is.

  442. Now the key

  443. to that

  444. is to stay clean

  445. before the Lord.

  446. The tighter

  447. you are with the Father,

  448. the less wiggle room

  449. you give

  450. to the evil one.

  451. When Jesus

  452. told his disciples

  453. that he was

  454. to go to Jerusalem

  455. and die,

  456. Peter,

  457. Peter wanted

  458. no part of it.

  459. Peter was zealous.

  460. Wore a dagger

  461. on his thigh.

  462. That's why

  463. he cut that man's ear

  464. off when he tried

  465. to arrest Jesus.

  466. I mean,

  467. you know,

  468. he had a big mouth.

  469. His foot

  470. fit

  471. exactly right

  472. in his mouth.

  473. And some of y'all

  474. know exactly

  475. what that means

  476. but I won't point you out.

  477. Peter tried

  478. to correct him.

  479. He said,

  480. far be it

  481. from you,

  482. Lord.

  483. This shall

  484. never happen

  485. to you.

  486. However,

  487. what Peter

  488. didn't understand

  489. was that part

  490. of the will

  491. of God.

  492. And Jesus

  493. didn't need

  494. to hear somebody

  495. trying to dissuade

  496. him

  497. when he was

  498. in the midst

  499. of not only

  500. taking on

  501. the cross

  502. that he would

  503. endure

  504. but bigger

  505. than that

  506. what he called

  507. the cup

  508. in the garden

  509. which was the cup

  510. of God's wrath.

  511. That means

  512. the sin

  513. of the weight

  514. of the world

  515. was to fall

  516. upon his shoulders.

  517. He had a bunch

  518. on him.

  519. He didn't need

  520. anybody else

  521. putting it on him.

  522. And he responded

  523. to Peter

  524. and said,

  525. get behind me,

  526. Satan.

  527. You're a hindrance

  528. to me.

  529. Now,

  530. was Peter

  531. Satan?

  532. No.

  533. Jesus knew

  534. that Satan

  535. was trying

  536. to throw him

  537. off his game

  538. and he used

  539. Peter to do it

  540. just like he did

  541. to Adam and Eve

  542. in the garden

  543. when he tried

  544. to throw them

  545. off their game

  546. just like he

  547. attempts to quote

  548. scripture to Jesus

  549. in the desert

  550. of temptation.

  551. Why does he

  552. accuse and hinder?

  553. Satan opposes

  554. the agenda

  555. of God.

  556. He works

  557. against the plan

  558. of God.

  559. He does it

  560. in our lives.

  561. He does it

  562. in our church.

  563. He does it

  564. in the kingdom

  565. of God.

  566. In the book

  567. of Thessalonians,

  568. the apostle Paul

  569. talked about

  570. wanting to come

  571. back to Thessalonica.

  572. and see them

  573. and every time

  574. he tried

  575. he said Satan

  576. hindered him

  577. from coming.

  578. Now,

  579. why would Satan

  580. hinder Paul

  581. from going back

  582. to God's people?

  583. Because Paul

  584. was encouraged

  585. to see them

  586. and he encouraged

  587. them to be strong.

  588. He was encouraged

  589. by them.

  590. He called the church

  591. that he nurtured

  592. and strengthened

  593. his glory

  594. and his joy.

  595. And the devil

  596. don't want anything

  597. to do with that.

  598. He don't want us

  599. to enjoy worship.

  600. He don't want us

  601. to grow together

  602. in the Lord.

  603. He wants to hinder

  604. that and be careful

  605. what he puts

  606. in your path

  607. for that.

  608. That's what the

  609. adversary,

  610. the accuser does.

  611. He gets in the way

  612. of the work

  613. of God.

  614. He assaults people.

  615. He whispers sweet,

  616. nothing is in your ear.

  617. Or like David,

  618. he leads you

  619. to seek after things

  620. for your glory

  621. and not God's glory

  622. because his attack

  623. is toward God.

  624. He's Satan,

  625. the accuser.

  626. And many times

  627. the false accuser.

  628. Because I got news

  629. for you today.

  630. If your sin is confessed

  631. and you've been forgiven

  632. and you've,

  633. it's been removed

  634. by the shed blood

  635. of the cross

  636. of Christ

  637. and you've repented

  638. and changed directions

  639. and walked away

  640. from that sin,

  641. it's gone.

  642. And I don't know

  643. how many people

  644. I've met

  645. that's been haunted

  646. by something

  647. that happened

  648. in their life

  649. years ago

  650. or months ago

  651. or weeks ago

  652. that they've repented

  653. of and walked away

  654. from and yet

  655. they still feel

  656. the weight of that.

  657. That's not of God.

  658. That's the evil one

  659. just continuing

  660. to pepper you.

  661. Because see,

  662. if he can beat you

  663. down enough,

  664. you'll give up.

  665. You just won't try.

  666. And we've been

  667. challenged by the Lord

  668. to live for the honor

  669. and glory of God.

  670. Man, that's hard to do

  671. when we're beat up.

  672. Don't listen

  673. to Satan's smack.

  674. He's your adversary,

  675. your opponent

  676. that tries to agonize you.

  677. He's also called Lucifer.

  678. And it only happens

  679. one time.

  680. It's in Isaiah chapter 14,

    Isaiah 14:12

  681. verse 12.

  682. And it's translated

  683. in different ways.

  684. It's fascinating.

  685. It's the word study of this.

  686. In the ESV,

  687. they call it the Daystar.

  688. That's what I read out of

  689. the English Standard Version.

  690. And they call him

  691. Daystar there.

  692. In the King James,

  693. it says Lucifer.

  694. And that is actually

  695. from a Latin translation

  696. called the Vulgate

  697. of the Old Testament.

  698. And from that word,

  699. it's a Latin term,

  700. Lucifer.

  701. But it's translated as

  702. bearer of light

  703. or sun,

  704. S-O-N,

  705. of the morning.

  706. That's what he was.

  707. When you look back

  708. at his history

  709. as we did last week,

  710. God created a beautiful creature

  711. and gave him high standing.

  712. But pride got in the way

  713. when he tried to be

  714. greater than God.

  715. And he went from

  716. the sun of morning

  717. to the father of night.

  718. So,

  719. so,

  720. why is that sun of morning,

  721. that description of him

  722. so important?

  723. Because it helps us

  724. to understand

  725. why his approach

  726. is sadly often successful

  727. in destroying people's lives.

  728. whoever told you

  729. that Satan

  730. is ugly

  731. and scary

  732. and would cause you

  733. to run

  734. lied to you.

  735. Satan was created

  736. attractive.

  737. He was winsome.

  738. An angel of light.

  739. And it is that way

  740. that he tries his best

  741. to present himself.

  742. Paul warns the church

  743. in 2 Corinthians 11

  744. that there are false apostles,

  745. deceitful workmen,

  746. disguising themselves

  747. as apostles of Christ

  748. and no wonder

  749. for even Satan,

  750. listen to this,

  751. disguises himself

  752. as an angel of light.

  753. So it is no surprise

  754. if his servants

  755. also disguise themselves

  756. as servants

  757. of righteousness.

  758. Satan will short sell you

  759. every time.

  760. He does it again

  761. and again

  762. in so many ways.

  763. I want you to listen

  764. to the proverb writer

  765. when he warns

  766. about adultery

  767. and what a common trap

  768. for the evil one.

  769. Sexual sin

  770. is something

  771. that the evil one

  772. loves to trap us with.

  773. loves to destroy us with.

  774. And he's having a heyday

  775. in the country.

  776. He really is.

  777. In so many ways

  778. we celebrate sodomy

  779. as a country.

  780. And if we're not clear

  781. about what the word of God says

  782. and what God says about it

  783. and we don't speak to that,

  784. it'll never be heard.

  785. So we need to be clear.

  786. Proverbs 5 talks about

  787. how easy it is

  788. to fall into

  789. sexual sin

  790. and the proverb writer

  791. was writing

  792. to a young man

  793. and he says this,

  794. for the lips

  795. of a forbidden woman

  796. drip honey

  797. and her speech

  798. is smoother than oil

  799. but in the end

  800. she's bitter as wormwood,

  801. sharp as a two-edged sword.

  802. Her feet go down to death,

  803. her steps follow the path

  804. to Sheol.

  805. She does not ponder

  806. the path of life,

  807. her ways wonder

  808. and she does not know it.

  809. Keep your way far from her

  810. and do not go near

  811. the door of her house

  812. lest you give your honor

  813. to others

  814. and your years

  815. to the merciless,

  816. lest strangers

  817. take their fill

  818. of your strength

  819. and your labors

  820. go to the house

  821. of a foreigner.

  822. For at the end

  823. of your life

  824. you groan

  825. when your flesh

  826. and blood

  827. are consumed

  828. and you say

  829. how I hated discipline

  830. and my heart

  831. despised reproof.

  832. I did not listen

  833. to the voice

  834. of my teachers

  835. and incline my ears

  836. to my instructors.

  837. I'm at the brink

  838. of utter ruin

  839. in the assembled

  840. congregation.

  841. Let me just rest

  842. there for a minute

  843. because the evil one

  844. whether it be

  845. sexual sin

  846. or some other type

  847. of sin

  848. the evil one

  849. don't want you

  850. to come back

  851. to church.

  852. He don't want you

  853. to walk faithfully

  854. with the Lord.

  855. He don't want you

  856. to be reminded

  857. of what the Word

  858. of God says.

  859. He don't want you

  860. to feel the Spirit

  861. of God move

  862. in a place

  863. like we have

  864. this morning.

  865. He don't want

  866. that to happen

  867. so he'll try

  868. his best

  869. to hinder you.

  870. Now Proverbs 5

  871. is written

  872. from an older man

  873. to a young man

  874. to warn him

  875. about the adulteress

  876. and ladies

  877. if that's offensive

  878. to you

  879. I got news

  880. for you.

  881. Adulterating men

  882. are sorrier

  883. than her.

  884. Don't be appeased

  885. by them.

  886. Young people

  887. save yourself

  888. and if it's too

  889. late for that

  890. then start afresh

  891. today

  892. because I'm

  893. telling you

  894. you can be

  895. clean before

  896. the Lord.

  897. He'll wash

  898. you clean

  899. and renew

  900. you

  901. but the devil

  902. wants his best

  903. to suck you

  904. in

  905. to a pattern

  906. in your life

  907. that'll cause

  908. great distress.

  909. Lucifer's sweet.

  910. He's sinful

  911. and he's sensual

  912. in his suggestions

  913. and they ruin you.

  914. It sure doesn't

  915. seem ugly.

  916. When I was

  917. a youth minister

  918. I used to tell

  919. young people

  920. if the devil

  921. wants to entice you

  922. he don't come

  923. down the school

  924. hallway

  925. with a skull

  926. on a stick

  927. saying let's party.

  928. He brings

  929. the most beautiful

  930. girl.

  931. he brings

  932. the most

  933. athletic boy.

  934. He brings

  935. the folks

  936. that you're

  937. most attracted

  938. to

  939. to drag

  940. you into

  941. a pit

  942. that you

  943. have a hard

  944. time rising

  945. out of.

  946. He doesn't

  947. sell himself

  948. as one

  949. that'll ruin

  950. you.

  951. He doesn't

  952. sell himself

  953. as one

  954. who'll cause

  955. you to be

  956. bound in sin.

  957. He'll tell

  958. you it's

  959. your life

  960. you do

  961. what you

  962. want to

  963. with it.

  964. Don't

  965. let nobody

  966. tell you

  967. what to

  968. do.

  969. He don't

  970. sell folks

  971. on addiction.

  972. He don't

  973. tell them

  974. how they

  975. can get

  976. involved

  977. with alcohol

  978. and become

  979. addicted

  980. and ruin

  981. their life.

  982. He don't

  983. tell them

  984. how they

  985. can be

  986. involved

  987. in drugs

  988. and how

  989. that can

  990. absolutely

  991. ruin their

  992. life.

  993. It just

  994. seems fun

  995. for a moment.

  996. He

  997. don't

  998. tell you

  999. how you

  1000. become

  1001. addicted

  1002. to porn

  1003. and ruin

  1004. your life.

  1005. He

  1006. don't

  1007. share

  1008. those

  1009. things.

  1010. No,

  1011. he makes

  1012. it about

  1013. social

  1014. status.

  1015. He

  1016. makes it

  1017. about a

  1018. relief

  1019. from what

  1020. woes

  1021. you.

  1022. He

  1023. makes it

  1024. about an

  1025. ease of

  1026. pain.

  1027. However,

  1028. it's all

  1029. schemes.

  1030. as Jesus

  1031. put it,

  1032. to steal

  1033. and to

  1034. kill

  1035. and to

  1036. destroy.

  1037. He's

  1038. Lucifer.

  1039. He's

  1040. attractive to

  1041. follow,

  1042. but he's

  1043. condemning in

  1044. the end.

  1045. It's not a

  1046. game.

  1047. It's a

  1048. war.

  1049. And we

  1050. must battle.

  1051. So,

  1052. three things

  1053. quickly.

  1054. One is,

  1055. don't be

  1056. enticed by

  1057. the evil

  1058. one.

  1059. He'll

  1060. whisper sweet

  1061. little lies

  1062. in your

  1063. ear and

  1064. it's easy

  1065. to get

  1066. enticed.

  1067. Don't

  1068. do it.

  1069. The second

  1070. thing is,

  1071. don't be

  1072. entertained

  1073. by the

  1074. evil one.

  1075. Because the

  1076. accuser wants

  1077. to sidetrack

  1078. us, I

  1079. promise you.

  1080. He wants

  1081. to throw us

  1082. off our

  1083. game.

  1084. More

  1085. importantly,

  1086. he wants

  1087. to throw

  1088. us off

  1089. what God's

  1090. got for

  1091. us.

  1092. So,

  1093. don't be

  1094. entertained

  1095. by the

  1096. evil one.

  1097. And lastly,

  1098. don't be

  1099. enamored

  1100. by the

  1101. evil one.

  1102. One day,

  1103. a quick,

  1104. big-fangled,

  1105. fast-talking

  1106. hobo

  1107. came to

  1108. Mayberry.

  1109. And he

  1110. started getting

  1111. Opie's

  1112. attention,

  1113. and it

  1114. would lead

  1115. Opie down

  1116. a wrong

  1117. path,

  1118. and Andy

  1119. got involved.

  1120. And the

  1121. hobo said,

  1122. well,

  1123. Sheriff,

  1124. maybe I

  1125. do things,

  1126. look at

  1127. things a

  1128. little

  1129. different than

  1130. other people

  1131. do.

  1132. Is that

  1133. wrong?

  1134. I live

  1135. by my

  1136. wits.

  1137. I'm not

  1138. above bending

  1139. the law

  1140. or to

  1141. keep clothes

  1142. on my

  1143. back or

  1144. food in my

  1145. stomach.

  1146. I like

  1147. the kind

  1148. of life

  1149. that other

  1150. people would

  1151. just love

  1152. to live

  1153. if they

  1154. only had

  1155. the courage.

  1156. What's

  1157. to say

  1158. that your

  1159. boy wouldn't

  1160. be happier?

  1161. what's

  1162. to say

  1163. that the

  1164. boy would

  1165. be happier

  1166. your way

  1167. than mine?

  1168. Why don't

  1169. we let

  1170. him decide?

  1171. And Andy

  1172. replied to

  1173. the man

  1174. that would

  1175. the next

  1176. day strike

  1177. oil in

  1178. another TV

  1179. series,

  1180. black gold

  1181. Texas tea,

  1182. and move

  1183. to Beverly

  1184. Hills.

  1185. Andy replied,

  1186. nah,

  1187. and listen,

  1188. I'm just

  1189. going to

  1190. say this,

  1191. and if you

  1192. don't know

  1193. what I'm

  1194. talking about

  1195. with either

  1196. one of these

  1197. series,

  1198. shame on you.

  1199. There's

  1200. enough apps

  1201. to find

  1202. this stuff.

  1203. Andy replied

  1204. to him and

  1205. said this,

  1206. nah,

  1207. I'm afraid

  1208. it don't

  1209. work that

  1210. way.

  1211. You can't

  1212. let a

  1213. young'un

  1214. decide for

  1215. himself.

  1216. He'll

  1217. grab at the

  1218. first flashy

  1219. thing with

  1220. shiny ribbons

  1221. on it.

  1222. And then

  1223. when he

  1224. finds it,

  1225. there's a

  1226. hook in

  1227. it.

  1228. And it's

  1229. too late.

  1230. The wrong

  1231. ideas come

  1232. packaged with

  1233. so much

  1234. glitter,

  1235. it's hard

  1236. to convince

  1237. him that

  1238. other things

  1239. might be

  1240. better in

  1241. the long

  1242. run.

  1243. And all

  1244. a parent

  1245. can say

  1246. is wait.

  1247. Trust me.

  1248. And try to

  1249. keep temptation

  1250. away.

  1251. Don't be

  1252. enamored by

  1253. the evil

  1254. one.

  1255. Don't reach

  1256. for flashy

  1257. things.

  1258. That's a

  1259. ploy of

  1260. the evil

  1261. one.

  1262. And there's

  1263. a hook

  1264. in it.

  1265. The Lord

  1266. is saying

  1267. wait.

  1268. trust me.

  1269. Trust me.

  1270. And I'm

  1271. thankful today

  1272. that we

  1273. can.

  1274. I just

  1275. want you to

  1276. know who

  1277. we're dealing

  1278. with.

  1279. And

  1280. scripture's quite

  1281. clear when

  1282. we look at the

  1283. examples that it

  1284. gives us.

  1285. With every head

  1286. bowed and every eye

  1287. closed, I ask

  1288. you today,

  1289. has there ever

  1290. been a time in

  1291. your life when

  1292. you've surrendered

  1293. your life to

  1294. follow the Lord

  1295. Jesus?

  1296. When you've

  1297. confessed your

  1298. need of Christ,

  1299. your need for

  1300. forgiveness,

  1301. ask him to

  1302. save you,

  1303. to forgive you,

  1304. to empower you

  1305. by his Holy

  1306. Spirit to

  1307. change your

  1308. life.

  1309. If that's

  1310. never happened

  1311. to you,

  1312. I want you to

  1313. know that he

  1314. will save you

  1315. today.

  1316. Today's the day

  1317. of salvation.

  1318. He'll change

  1319. your life.

  1320. We're going to

  1321. stand in just a

  1322. moment and we're

  1323. going to sing and

  1324. as we start, I

  1325. want you to

  1326. come.

  1327. If you've never

  1328. given your heart

  1329. and life to the

  1330. Lord Jesus, you

  1331. come and tell me.

  1332. I'd love to take

  1333. time with you right

  1334. after the service to

  1335. speak to you just

  1336. for a few moments

  1337. about what it

  1338. means to give your

  1339. heart and life to

  1340. the Lord Jesus.

  1341. Maybe you're here

  1342. this morning and you

  1343. have done that, but

  1344. you've never

  1345. acknowledged that

  1346. through baptism,

  1347. which I believe is

  1348. the first step of

  1349. obedience based on

  1350. what scripture tells

  1351. me.

  1352. Jesus, by his

  1353. example and by his

  1354. commission, told us

  1355. that if we're ashamed

  1356. of him before others,

1357. he'll be ashamed of us

  1358. before our Father,

  1359. which means it's not

  1360. really legitimate if

  1361. we're ashamed of it.

  1362. He tells us to

  1363. acknowledge what

  1364. Christ has done in

  1365. our life as

  1366. believers through

  1367. baptism, physical

  1368. process, to honor him

1369. and obey him in that

  1370. way.

  1371. If you've never done

  1372. that, I'm going to

  1373. tell you, it's not

  1374. just a procedure.

  1375. It's a hindrance in

  1376. your life if you've

  1377. never done it.

  1378. The devil would use

  1379. that to slow you

  1380. down.

  1381. Maybe you're here and

  1382. God's drawing you to

  1383. First Baptist Church.

  1384. God's doing a wonderful

1385. work in our midst and I'm

  1386. thankful for that.

  1387. God's leading you here.

1388. I'd love to guide you in

  1389. that.

1390. But for all of us,

  1391. we're in a battle.

1392. And some of us are

1393. losing it, at least in

1394. some area of our life.

1395. And today you can walk

  1396. clean.

1397. You can make a decision

1398. that, God, I want to

1399. lean on your power and

  1400. strength.

  1401. I want to do what's

  1402. right in you.

1403. I want to trust you

  1404. instead of my own

  1405. judgment.

  1406. And I don't know what

  1407. everything holds for that,

1408. but I'm just going to

1409. trust you with it, Lord.

1410. I'm going to give it

  1411. over to you.

1412. I'm going to ask you to

  1413. empower me to change

  1414. today, to please you

1415. with all of my life.

1416. Don't get caught in the

1417. stare that he'll set for

  1418. us.

1419. Lord Jesus, today, I pray

1420. that you'll allow us to

1421. honor you by giving it

1422. over to you, by entrusting

  1423. you with it.

  1424. Oh, God, I pray.

1425. Lead us, Lord, to honor

1426. you with all of our lives.

  1427. In Jesus' precious name,

  1428. amen.

  1429. Amen.
