  1. If you have your Bibles, I want you to turn to Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  2. Ephesians chapter 6, people that know what they're doing in the kitchen

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  3. have special touches that just set off a dish and make it right.

  4. Somebody confessed to me between the worship hours

  5. that today they were going home and serving an experiment with a stow-bought cake.

  6. Wow. I said, that's the stuff you do at home.

  7. Don't bring that stuff to church. You bring the good stuff to us.

  8. Sometimes folks do stuff like that and they don't tell you what they do.

  9. It's a secret. They don't want you to know how good, how they got what they got.

  10. The secret formula for Coca-Cola is 130 years old

  11. and it sits in a vault at the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta.

  12. KFC's original recipe is a secret.

  13. 11 herbs and spices.

  14. And I thought Heinz 57 had 57 ingredients,

  15. but I found out that J.H. Heinz' favorite number is 5

  16. and his wife's favorite number is 7.

  17. And that's where they came up with the name.

  18. So I know Dawn's grandmother's secret recipe was bacon grease.

  19. And she served bacon grease with about anything.

  20. And I'm convinced that you could pour bacon grease on something in the yard and eat it

  21. and it would be good.

  22. I haven't tried that and I encourage you not to try that,

  23. but I'm just saying.

  24. It's the secret sauce that makes one dish stand out from another.

  25. Now I realize it is Christmas time and we're all ready,

  26. but I got to finish what I start.

  27. And so today I want to conclude a series on the real war.

  28. Because folks, we're in a war that we can't see.

  29. We see the evidence of it.

  30. A war that is filled with battles that we need to win.

  31. And our goal is to win every daily battle.

  32. That's the goal, okay?

  33. Now I will tell you that we were born in sin

  34. and we're sinners by our own commission.

  35. So we will not win every battle, okay?

  36. You will fail.

  37. But our effort is to win every daily battle.

  38. At least as many as we possibly can.

  39. And to be clear, the war has been won, thank God.

  40. Christ won the war on the cross,

  41. but now we're fighting skirmishes that we don't need to be fighting.

  42. And we lose too many battles.

  43. We've been talking about spiritually defending ourselves

  44. and we talked about the offensive weapon being the word of God.

  45. Now, what I want you to know today

  46. is what will really set you off for victory.

  47. It's what I call the secret sauce.

  48. For context, I want to read Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  49. beginning in verse 16, where it says this.

  50. In all circumstances, take up the shield of faith

  51. with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one

  52. and take the helmet of salvation

  53. and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.

  54. Our key passage today,

  55. praying at all times with all prayer and supplication.

  56. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance,

  57. making supplication for all the saints.

  58. And also for me,

  59. that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly

  60. to proclaim the mystery of the gospel

  61. for which I am an ambassador in chains,

  62. that I may declare it boldly as I ought to speak.

  63. The secret sauce of spiritual victory

  64. is consistent, heartfelt, dedicated,

  65. life-surrendering prayer.

  66. Like a secret sauce,

  67. you need to make sure that prayer is part of your processes.

  68. Now, how do we do that?

  69. Well, this passage tells us how to do that.

  70. First, it tells us to pray on all occasions.

  71. When do we pray?

  72. Do we pray in the morning?

  73. Or do we pray in the evening?

  74. Yes.

  75. Both.

  76. When we think we need to pray,

  77. we pray.

  78. When we don't think we need to pray,

  79. we pray.

  80. When we want to pray and feel like praying,

  81. we pray.

  82. When we don't want to pray

  83. and don't feel like praying,

  84. we pray.

  85. When we feel strong in prayer,

  86. we pray.

  87. When we feel weak in prayer,

  88. we pray.

  89. Verse 18 says,

  90. Praying at all times in the Spirit

  91. with all prayer.

  92. All prayer means that's the kind of prayer

  93. you pray on your knees.

  94. It's also the kind of prayer

  95. you pray driving down the road.

  96. It's the kind of prayer you pray

  97. with your hands folded in front of you.

  98. It's the kind of prayer that you pray

  99. with your hands up in the air.

  100. And I discourage you from doing

  101. either one of those

  102. when you're driving and praying.

  103. Okay?

  104. It's about praying publicly.

  105. It's about praying privately.

  106. It's about praying with loud cries.

  107. It's about praying with silent whispers.

  108. Pray prayers of praise

  109. because of who he is.

  110. Pray prayers of thanksgiving

  111. because of what he's done.

  112. Pray prayers of confession

  113. because of what we've done.

  114. Pray prayers of petition

  115. for what we want him to do.

  116. Pray prayers of intercession

  117. for what you want,

  118. who you want him to do it through.

  119. and with.

  120. We're to pray at all times.

  121. It is to be an ongoing conversation.

  122. 1 Thessalonians 5, 17 says,

  123. Pray without ceasing.

  124. Now, that means

  125. when a burdensome thought

  126. crosses your mind,

  127. give that to God.

  128. When a hateful thought

  129. crosses your mind,

  130. give that to God.

  131. When an impure thought

  132. crosses your mind,

  133. give that to God.

  134. When an inappropriate thought

  135. crosses your mind,

  136. give that to God.

  137. When a negative thought

  138. crosses your mind,

  139. give that to God.

  140. 2 Corinthians 10, verse 5,

    2 Corinthians 10:5

  141. says take every thought captive

  142. to obey Christ.

  143. I compared it a couple weeks ago

  144. to playing the arcade game

  145. Whack-A-Mole.

  146. When them things popped up,

  147. you hit them with a hammer.

  148. When another one popped up,

  149. you hit it with a hammer.

  150. And the reality is

  151. in our life,

  152. we need to be whacking the moles

  153. that come up with prayer.

  154. When thoughts cross our mind

  155. that don't need to cross our mind,

  156. we take those thoughts to God.

  157. We catch them.

  158. We take them captive

  159. to obey Christ.

  160. When good things come,

  161. give God praise.

  162. When bad things come,

  163. give that over to God.

  164. Trust Him with it.

  165. Don't wait until the evening

  166. when that time comes.

  167. Don't wait until the morning

  168. when that time comes.

  169. Don't wait until you get still.

  170. There's great value

  171. and very biblical value.

  172. And the men that journey with me

  173. on Tuesday mornings know

  174. we've been over this again

  175. and again and again.

  176. There is a need in your life

  177. to have a still time

  178. with the Lord,

  179. quietly,

  180. quietly,

  181. alone,

  182. with His Word in your lap

  183. and seeking His face in prayer.

  184. There is desperate need of that

  185. in all of our lives.

  186. It needs to be a habit,

  187. a practice

  188. that we do every day

  189. that God allows us to.

  190. But we also address the Lord

  191. in an ongoing fashion.

  192. I get confused these days

  193. between who's crazy in the world

  194. and who's got an earbud in.

  195. When I'm in the store

  196. and somebody's having

  197. a full-blown conversation

  198. with nobody

  199. and I don't know

  200. that they got something

  201. in their ear

  202. and they're talking to somebody

  203. or maybe they're just

  204. talking to themselves,

  205. you know.

  206. I want to help,

  207. but it don't seem appropriate,

  208. you know.

  209. Whether verbal or not,

  210. that's the kind of ongoing prayer

  211. that we ought to have

  212. with the Lord.

  213. When things come up,

  214. give them over to God.

  215. I mean, prayer is about

  216. taking time to be still

  217. and alone and before the Lord.

  218. However, it's also about

  219. walking with Him

  220. and talking with Him.

  221. That's what praying

  222. in the Spirit is all about.

  223. Part of what praying

  224. in the Spirit is all about.

  225. Now, how do we do that?

  226. Well,

  227. the way it works is

  228. we need to be filled

  229. with the Holy Spirit.

  230. Now, let me explain

  231. something to you.

  232. As a child of God,

  233. if you surrender your life

  234. to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  235. you receive all the Holy Spirit

  236. you're ever going to get.

  237. Okay?

  238. The Holy Spirit

  239. in several things happen

  240. when we're saved

  241. and one of them is

  242. the Holy Spirit

  243. indwells us.

  244. Okay?

  245. So we have the Holy Spirit

  246. in our lives.

  247. But there are times

  248. when we can be filled

  249. with the Holy Spirit.

  250. Okay?

  251. It's kind of like a balloon

  252. for lack of a better.

  253. There's not a good illustration.

  254. I'll promise you.

  255. But it's kind of like a balloon.

  256. It can be there,

  257. but it can be deflated

  258. or it can be inflated.

  259. There's times when we walk

  260. with the Lord faithfully,

  261. obediently,

  262. taking matters

  263. that are not obedient

  264. and laying them before Him

  265. and asking Him to forgive us

  266. and then walking away from Him

  267. that He fills us

  268. with His Holy Spirit.

  269. We already got the Holy Spirit,

  270. but we get filled.

  271. Our balloon gets inflated,

  272. if you will.

  273. We're where we need to be.

  274. I make it a practice

  275. not to run out of gas

  276. in my vehicle.

  277. Okay?

  278. Just don't do that.

  279. I'm not going to do

  280. the push of shame.

  281. I'm not going to do it.

  282. Okay?

  283. But at the same time,

  284. it's not always full.

  285. And the reality is

  286. that we always have

  287. the Holy Spirit,

  288. but we're not always

  289. filled with the Holy Spirit.

  290. Our lives don't reflect that.

  291. And I wish

  292. that by your attendance

  293. this morning

  294. that you'd just be

  295. fully inflated

  296. and leave here

  297. filled with the Holy Spirit.

  298. But the reality is

  299. that's not what it's based on.

  300. It's not based on

  301. your appearance here.

  302. It's not based on

  303. your presence here.

  304. It's not based on being

  305. excited about the music.

  306. It's not based on

  307. enjoying the sermon.

  308. All of those things

  309. can play into it,

  310. but the reality is

  311. it's got to do

  312. with your personal

  313. relationship with Christ.

  314. Where are you at

  315. with the matters

  316. that He's laid before you

  317. that you know

  318. you need to deal with?

  319. What have you done

  320. with that?

  321. And when you walk

  322. away from that,

  323. God blesses such as that

  324. and He'll fill you

  325. with the Holy Spirit

  326. of God.

  327. You'll be filled.

  328. The Holy Spirit

  329. will take over your life.

  330. You'll make good decisions

  331. because you're not

  332. leaning on yourself.

  333. You're leaning on

  334. the Holy Spirit

  335. of God to do it.

  336. You'll live more godly.

  337. And that kind of

  338. relationship,

  339. you don't fall out

  340. of relationship

  341. with the Lord

  342. when you're not

  343. walking with Him

  344. if you're a child

  345. of God.

  346. But you're not

  347. filled with the Holy Spirit.

  348. You're not making

  349. good decisions.

  350. You're not doing it right.

  351. And so the challenge

  352. for us is to keep that,

  353. to be filled

  354. with the Holy Spirit

  355. and we're filled

  356. with the Holy Spirit

  357. when we take

  358. God's Word in

  359. and when we respond

  360. obediently to it.

  361. There's not a ritual

  362. we can do with that.

  363. It's a life.

  364. We live for that.

  365. And God loves us

  366. regardless of our actions

  367. but He does greater things.

  368. Get this now.

  369. He does greater things

  370. in those

  371. who are filled

  372. with the Holy Spirit

  373. of God.

  374. He does greater things

  375. in those

  376. that are walking

  377. obediently to God

  378. that are conversing

  379. with the Lord

  380. about matters

  381. that they need

  382. to deal with

  383. and are walking

  384. away from the things

  385. that become a hindrance

  386. to them.

  387. God blesses

  388. such as that.

  389. James 5, 16 says

  390. the prayer

  391. of a righteous person

  392. has great power

  393. as it's working.

  394. But it does make

  395. a difference

  396. in what kind of life

  397. we're living.

  398. It does make a difference

  399. if we're trying

  400. to be independent

  401. or we're being

  402. dependent upon Him.

  403. I want you to listen

  404. to what happens

  405. when we pray

  406. in the Spirit.

  407. Romans 8, 26, and 27

  408. says this.

  409. Likewise, the Spirit

  410. helps us

  411. in our weakness

  412. for we don't know

  413. what to pray for

  414. as we ought.

  415. You ever been there?

  416. When you're in a situation

  417. and you need to pray

  418. about it

  419. but you don't know

  420. how to pray?

  421. Maybe I'm the only one.

  422. But for we don't know

  423. what we ought to pray

  424. for as we ought

  425. but the Spirit

  426. Himself intercedes

  427. for us

  428. with groanings

  429. too deep

  430. for words

  431. and He who

  432. searches hearts

  433. knows what's

  434. in the mind

  435. of the Spirit

  436. because the Spirit

  437. intercedes for the saints

  438. according to the will

  439. of God.

  440. Now for that to happen

  441. we have to pray

  442. in the Spirit.

  443. That means not

  444. pray selfishly,

  445. not pray about

  446. what I want

  447. but pray about

  448. what God wants

  449. because prayer

  450. is not about

  451. trying to get

  452. my will into heaven.

  453. Prayer is about

  454. getting God's will

  455. into my life

  456. and on earth

  457. and God moves

  458. in such prayers

  459. as that.

  460. He'll move

  461. in the prayer.

  462. He'll move

  463. in the prayer.

  464. The one that's

  465. doing the praying.

  466. So we pray

  467. on all occasions.

  468. The second thing

  469. is we pray

  470. with every effort.

  471. He says keep alert

  472. with all perseverance.

  473. Now I want you

  474. to think about something.

  475. I want to ask you

  476. something.

  477. If someone's trying

  478. to break into your home

  479. and you are

  480. at home

  481. and you know

  482. he's trying to do it

  483. when do you

  484. give up

  485. and open the door

  486. and let him in

  487. to do whatever

  488. he wants to do?

  489. Well I don't.

  490. Okay?

  491. I don't.

  492. I warn him.

  493. I call the law

  494. and then I introduce

  495. him to my little friend.

  496. Okay?

  497. However,

  498. I'm not going

  499. to stand by

  500. and let somebody

  501. endanger my family.

  502. It's not

  503. going to happen.

  504. And I want to

  505. advise you

  506. something.

  507. We're in a war

  508. and someone

  509. is pursuing

  510. your family

  511. and you better

  512. be on watch.

  513. And I'm telling you

  514. don't get weary.

  515. Fight,

  516. defend,

  517. do it on your knees.

  518. When Jesus

  519. was praying

  520. in the garden

  521. right before

  522. his arrest

  523. he told his disciples

  524. to watch and pray.

  525. And you know

  526. what they did?

  527. They fell asleep

  528. is what they did.

  529. And in Matthew 26

    Matthew 26:40–41

  530. verse 40 through 41

  531. he says this.

  532. And he came

  533. to his disciples

  534. and found them

  535. sleeping and he said

  536. to Peter.

  537. And notice he's

  538. talking to Peter.

  539. Now why did he talk

  540. to Peter about this?

  541. Because they were

  542. all sleeping apparently.

  543. He says that

  544. to Peter because

  545. he knows Peter's

  546. about to face

  547. a huge temptation

  548. that night.

  549. The temptation

  550. to protect himself

  551. by denying Christ

  552. and he falls to it

  553. again and again

  554. and again.

  555. But he also

  556. speaks to Peter

  557. because he knows

  558. that God's

  559. going to use

  560. Peter in a mighty way.

  561. If you don't believe it

  562. read the book

  563. of Acts this afternoon.

  564. Okay?

  565. God's going to use

  566. Peter in a mighty way

  567. and Jesus knows that

  568. so he speaks

  569. specifically to Peter.

  570. It relates to all of them

  571. but he says

  572. so could you not

  573. watch with me

  574. one hour?

  575. Watch and pray

  576. that you may not

  577. enter into temptation.

  578. The spirit indeed

  579. is willing

  580. but the flesh is weak.

  581. Now when he's saying

  582. watch there

  583. he means prayerfully

  584. prayerfully

  585. be on your guard.

  586. Paul says

  587. to pray

  588. with perseverance

  589. steadfastness

  590. don't let up.

  591. Jesus left them

  592. went back to pray.

  593. Do you know

  594. what they did

  595. in the garden?

  596. They went back

  597. to sleep.

  598. They went back

  599. to sleep

  600. their eyes were heavy

  601. it was the middle

  602. of the night

  603. give them a break

  604. but they went back

  605. to sleep.

  606. Listen

  607. we may grow weary

  608. but we can't

  609. stop praying

  610. folks.

  611. Things may get tough

  612. but we can't

  613. stop praying.

  614. Jesus tells a story

  615. in Luke chapter 18

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  616. of a widow

  617. begging a wicked judge

  618. for justice

  619. against her adversary

  620. and he would not

  621. respond.

  622. And so the woman

  623. just kept on

  624. and finally

  625. the judge

  626. gave in

  627. because of

  628. her persistence

  629. and Jesus

  630. said

  631. if a judge

  632. that does not

  633. fear God

  634. or respect people

  635. will change

  636. his mind

  637. and relent

  638. don't you think

  639. a loving father

  640. will?

  641. And then he

  642. asked

  643. when I return

  644. will I find

  645. such faith?

  646. Now people

  647. have a hard time

  648. with Luke 18

  649. because

  650. they say

  651. is he saying

  652. that Father God

  653. is like the wicked judge

  654. that wouldn't

  655. listen.

  656. No that's not

  657. what he's saying.

  658. He's saying

  659. if a godless man

  660. will finally

  661. respond to somebody

  662. who pursues

  663. how much more

  664. will a loving father

  665. do that?

  666. Take your matters

  667. to the Lord.

  668. Take them in prayer.

  669. Leave them with him.

  670. Luke 18

  671. 1 says

  672. that he told

  673. that story

  674. listen

  675. so they would

  676. continue to pray

  677. and not lose heart.

  678. That was the point

  679. of telling that story.

  680. In Luke chapter 11

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  681. he tells of a man

  682. banging on a friend's door

  683. in the middle of the night

  684. wanting bread

  685. for his family

  686. and the man

  687. didn't want to get up.

  688. You know why?

  689. Because they were

  690. probably all

  691. in the same bed

  692. probably in some

  693. big pallet

  694. in that place

  695. and he probably

  696. had a baby

  697. because if anybody

  698. has a baby

  699. they don't want

  700. to get up in the night.

  701. Don't mess with a baby.

  702. I don't know

  703. what his family

  704. structure was

  705. I'm just telling you

  706. the man didn't

  707. want to get up.

  708. He had locked

  709. the place down.

  710. He had secured it.

  711. He had everybody

  712. bedded down.

  713. He didn't want

  714. to get up

  715. and the dude

  716. just kept knocking.

  717. Why?

  718. Because his family

  719. was starving.

  720. He wasn't asking

  721. for a cup of sugar

  722. he was asking

  723. for bread

  724. and the man

  725. because he kept knocking

  726. the man that was

  727. in the bed

  728. got up

  729. and I want you

  730. to listen to what

  731. Jesus said

  732. when he followed

  733. up that story

  734. you're familiar

  735. with this probably

  736. but I want you

  737. to know the context

  738. in which he says it.

  739. It's in Luke 11

  740. 9 and 10

  741. it says this

  742. and I tell you

  743. ask and it will

  744. be given to you

  745. seek and you'll find

  746. knock and it will

  747. be opened to you

  748. for anyone who

  749. asks receives

  750. and the one

  751. who seeks finds

  752. and the one

  753. who knocks

  754. it will be opened.

  755. We are in desperate

  756. need to keep

  757. spiritual watch

  758. over our lives

  759. over our loved

  760. one's lives

  761. and to pray

  762. persistently

  763. that God would

  764. work and move

  765. in our lives.

  766. I don't understand

  767. everything about

  768. the economy of God

  769. I trust it by faith

  770. but I just have

  771. to ask this question

  772. what if we're

  773. one prayer short

  774. of the persistence

  775. that God was seeking

  776. and all I got

  777. to say about that

  778. is let's not be

  779. let's not be

  780. one prayer short

  781. so pray with

  782. every effort

  783. also pray for

  784. others

  785. pray for others

  786. the best way

  787. to keep from

  788. getting self-absorbed

  789. about your own

  790. pain and your own

  791. worry is to

  792. prioritize the

  793. praying for others

  794. because God blesses

  795. intercessory prayer

  796. intercessory prayers

  797. are those prayers

  798. that we pray for

  799. other people

  800. and intercede

  801. on their behalf

  802. and such prayer

  803. puts us second

  804. and puts the one

  805. that we're praying

  806. for first

  807. when we take on

  808. that concern

  809. to the right place

  810. to the throne

  811. of God

  812. and I'll just tell you

  813. God blesses such as that

  814. and if

  815. we spend so much

  816. time praying

  817. for other people

  818. that we run

  819. out of time

  820. and don't get

  821. to our own needs

  822. God's not

  823. going to neglect

  824. us

  825. because we were

  826. busy praying

  827. for somebody else

  828. I promise you

  829. he'll provide

  830. the devil would

  831. much rather you

  832. be concerned

  833. about yourselves

  834. he wants us

  835. to want our way

  836. he wants us

  837. to look

  838. out for ourselves

  839. instead of prioritizing

  840. the will of God

  841. he wants us

  842. to ask

  843. well what's

  844. in this for me

  845. what do I get

  846. out of this

  847. nothing about

  848. an attitude

  849. like that

  850. is godly

  851. and it shows

  852. up quickly

  853. and the devil

  854. uses those

  855. attitudes

  856. to divide

  857. families

  858. pray for

  859. families

  860. pray for

  861. your family

  862. pray for

  863. other people's

  864. families

  865. families are

  866. under attack

  867. folks

  868. families are

  869. attacking each

  870. other and they're

  871. being attacked

  872. all at the same

  873. time

  874. pray for

  875. families

  876. pray for

  877. the church

  878. I mean do you

  879. think the devil

  880. likes when a church

  881. grows

  882. do you think the

  883. devil likes when we

  884. reach people for

  885. Christ

  886. do you think he

  887. likes when people

  888. grow in the

  889. Lord

  890. do you think he

  891. likes when we

  892. preach on satanic

  893. attack

  894. we've poked a

  895. bear folks

  896. pray for the

  897. church

  898. Satan would

  899. love for

  900. selfishness to

  901. come in the

  902. way

  903. selfishness takes

  904. our mind off

  905. what God wants

  906. to do through

  907. us and puts

  908. our mind on

  909. what's in it

  910. for me and

  911. God's plan is

  912. bigger than me

  913. and it's bigger

  914. than you it's

  915. bigger than all

  916. of us it's

  917. God's plan we

  918. just get to be a

  919. part of it we

  920. just get to join

  921. in so let's look

  922. to him and pray

  923. for the church and

  924. and pray for this

  925. nation

  926. God's not done

  927. with America I'm

  928. convinced God's not

  929. done with America

  930. Jesus still saves

  931. folks and pray

  932. that God would

  933. bring revival and

  934. renewal to our

  935. country and on

  936. that note I want

  937. you to notice how

  938. Paul tells them to

  939. pray he didn't ask

  940. for them to pray for

  941. his well-being he

  942. didn't ask for them

  943. to pray for his

  944. ease he didn't ask

  945. for him them to pray

  946. for his comfort he

  947. didn't ask for them

  948. to pray that he'd

  949. have his way no no

  950. he asked in verse

  951. 19 that words may be

  952. given to me in

  953. opening my mouth

  954. boldly to proclaim

  955. the mystery of the

  956. gospel so lastly

  957. pray concerning the

  958. gospel pray concerning

  959. the gospel we are

  960. quick to pray for

  961. Christians to get

  962. well man we spend a

  963. lot of time trying to

  964. keep Christians out of

  965. heaven you know and

  966. there's nothing wrong

  967. with that there's

  968. nothing wrong with

  969. that but we spend a

  970. lot of time praying

  971. that Christians will

  972. get well that they

  973. won't hurt and that

  974. they'll be healed and

  975. there's nothing wrong

  976. with that but I want

  977. you to notice how

  978. centered the message

  979. that Paul gives them

  980. is message of the

  981. gospel Paul says pray

  982. for boldness and he

  983. describes it as the

  984. mystery pray for boldness

  985. and sharing the

  986. mystery now what is the

  987. mystery well this word

  988. when it is used in the

  989. New Testament it is

  990. defined as either a

  991. mystery or a secret and

  992. that's two different

  993. words in our language but

  994. it's the same kind of word

  995. in the Greek and it's

  996. talking about the life

  997. changing message of the

  998. gospel of Jesus Christ

  999. being a mystery or a

1000. secret is it a secret no

  1001. however it's a mystery

  1002. because you don't

  1003. understand it until you

  1004. have it

1005. years ago my family drove

1006. out west I had seen

  1007. pictures of the Grand

1008. Canyon all my life we had a

1009. set of encyclopedias at the

  1010. house we didn't have

1011. world book that was for

1012. rich folks but we had

1013. one and and when I when I

1014. look in there I could see

  1015. those black and white

  1016. pictures of the Grand

  1017. Canyon I had seen

1018. pictures of it I knew it

1019. was big I knew something

1020. about Paul Bunyan's axe and

1021. all that stuff but I had

1022. never been there before and

1023. when I stood on the south

1024. rim of the Grand Canyon and

  1025. looked across that thing

  1026. those pictures didn't

  1027. didn't measure up

  1028. wasn't a secret I knew where

1029. it was but it was a mystery

1030. because I had never seen

1031. anything like that from a

1032. picture it was different when

  1033. I experienced it in a

1034. similar way the power of the

1035. gospel is not known until it's

  1036. experienced now understand we

1037. have a responsibility to share

1038. the gospel with folks and

  1039. they're not going to

1040. understand it they may submit

1041. to it they may give their

1042. heart and life to the Lord

1043. Jesus but they're not even

1044. going to know what they're

1045. getting when they do it until

  1046. they have it

1047. and Paul says we pray that I'll

1048. have boldness to to share that

  1049. because it's a mystery that's hard

  1050. to fathom

  1051. Alejandro is a Peruvian

1052. he was on mission to God

1053. years ago this church took a

1054. mission trip to Peru and led

1055. Alejandro to the Lord and

1056. Alejandro got on fire for the

1057. Lord and he served the Lord

1058. faithfully and when you give to

  1059. First Baptist Church there's a

1060. line besides the Lottie Moon and

1061. side squad program besides that

  1062. there's another line a

1063. significant line in our budget

  1064. that's international missions

1065. there's another one called North

  1066. American missions anything we

1067. don't spend in those lines goes

  1068. toward Lottie Moon Christmas

1069. offering but but those lines are

1070. set up for us to partner with

1071. missionaries on the field with

1072. ministries on the field and to

1073. subsidize those who go from our

1074. church on mission trips over

  1075. there short-term mission trips

  1076. that's what it's set up for

1077. Alejandro is supported through that

1078. budget line because of his

  1079. faithfulness and he

1080. when we go over there he

  1081. translates for us and

1082. when we're not there he boats up

1083. into the jungles to reach tribal

1084. people and recently he baptized 18

  1085. people there

1086. one man that was baptized was

  1087. formerly

1088. a shaman that is that he was a

1089. wizard of sorts that practiced

1090. rituals of witchcraft he had

1091. always challenged those that tried

1092. to share the gospel around him

1093. however one day someone gave him a

1094. gospel track in his own dialect he

1095. had never seen the gospel in his own

1096. language customized to his dialect and

1097. the simplicity and the clarity of the

1098. gospel just jarred him it was like a

1099. mystery reveal he tried to challenge

1100. the man but the man just kept giving him

1101. biblical answers and the shaman asked

1102. him he said why don't you run away from me like

1103. everyone else does and the witness said it's the

1104. holy spirit who convicts sin it's not man man that does that and he said I will

1105. continue to pray for you and in due time you will listen and you will obey and two weeks

1106. later the shaman came back got saved and he was baptized among those with Alejandro

1107. that my friend is the power of the gospel

1108. and it's through the gospel that God unites all people from every tribe every people and every

1109. language and it's a mystery how all of the things that we have done wrong can be put upon Christ and

1110. taken off of us for all of eternity but that's part of the gospel

1111. when Paul was writing this to the church of Ephesus he was about to face the Romans

1112. and he knew that was coming

1113. and the Romans thought that Christianity was just a sect of the Jews and Paul was going to boldly go

1114. and proclaim that Christ is where our hope is

1115. and it is only in Christ alone

1116. and so he concludes this by saying I want you to pray

1117. that I'll speak boldly and that God will give me the words

  1118. to say

1119. my friend that's a good prayer to pray every time the words preached

  1120. because God works

1121. in and through such prayers

1122. whatever we try to do for the kingdom

1123. we can't make it happen

1124. we can't conjure that up

1125. only God can do that

1126. and we must rely upon him

1127. and how we rely upon him is through prayer

  1128. faithful

  1129. selfless

  1130. gospel driven prayer

  1131. Adrian Rogers said this

  1132. Satan can't keep God

  1133. from answering our prayers

1134. but he will keep us from asking

1135. and I'll just tell you friend

  1136. a prayerless Christian

  1137. is a powerless

  1138. Christian

1139. with every head bowed and every eye closed

1140. I want to ask you this morning

1141. if you've ever surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus Christ

1142. you say well I don't know about all that

1143. well we'd love to guide you in that

  1144. it is a mystery

  1145. you'll be amazed

1146. when you meet the Lord Jesus personally

1147. but if you've never done that

1148. we're going to stand and we're going to sing in just a moment

1149. and I want you to obey God

1150. maybe everybody around you thinks you have

1151. but you've never done it

1152. quit worrying about what everybody else thinks

1153. and make it right with the Lord

1154. maybe you've done that privately

1155. you've never done that publicly

1156. and you want to come and acknowledge that

  1157. biblically through baptism

  1158. you come

1159. we won't baptize you this morning

1160. but we'll line it up

  1161. and set it up

  1162. you come

  1163. and acknowledge that publicly

1164. maybe God's drawing you to this church

1165. God's doing a move at First Baptist

  1166. I'm thankful for that

  1167. and so

  1168. God's leading you here

1169. I encourage you to come

1170. we guide you in that process

1171. or maybe you just got stuff

1172. you need to deal with

1173. and you can deal with that

1174. when we stand where you are

1175. or you can deal with this altar

  1176. or

1177. this pastor would love to pray with you

1178. if you'd like for me to

1179. I don't know what God's doing in your heart

1180. but you'll never be satisfied

  1181. unless you follow it

  1182. so just be obedient

1183. Heavenly Father I love you

1184. and I thank you Lord

1185. for your love for us

1186. and I ask right now

  1187. that you'll work

1188. and you'll move in our midst

  1189. as only you can

  1190. Lord Jesus

  1191. in Jesus name

  1192. Amen
