  1. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to be with you today.

  2. So first, my church is in Toronto, Canada.

  3. It's actually right outside of Toronto.

  4. It's Hamilton.

  5. And we just call it Toronto because no one knows where Hamilton is.

  6. But what's really neat and special to me about this service is that we started at a new location three weeks ago.

  7. This is our first service at a public university that has 30,000 students.

  8. And so right now, as I'm preaching here, we're also live streaming to my church in Toronto, Canada.

  9. And so this is a combined service.

  10. And so thank you so much for hosting us and letting us be a part of this amazing mission conference.

  11. You know, so many people ask me the question, I was in Mississippi as a pastor for a decade.

  12. How did I go from being a Mississippi pastor for a decade, three children, life, to all of a sudden I'm in Toronto, Canada, Hamilton area, starting a brand new church?

  13. What happened?

  14. And so what I wanted to do today is really just kind of show you from God's word and from my own experience to answer a question that I hope we all have.

  15. It's the question that's, how do you find God's will?

  16. Because it's a question that we all need to know.

  17. It doesn't matter where you're at.

  18. It doesn't matter what situation you're in.

  19. It doesn't matter your age.

  20. It doesn't matter if you're retired, if you're a grandparent.

  21. It doesn't matter if you're young and starting out.

  22. If you're trying to find a new job, you're constantly asking that question or should ask that question.

  23. How do I find God's will?

  24. And so this morning we're going to be looking at Genesis chapter 24.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  25. Genesis chapter 24, if you have your Bibles, I'm going to read that in just a moment.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  26. I'm going to be looking at the story of Isaac and also looking at my own story, how to find God's will.

  27. But first I want to really give you three things about God's will because this is what I get a lot.

  28. Three myths about God's will.

  29. The first myth of God's will is called the missionary myth.

  30. The missionary myth is basically that God has a plan.

  31. He has a purpose for missionaries.

  32. But for the normal person, maybe you're sitting there thinking,

  33. but for the normal person, God doesn't have some amazing special plan and purpose for me.

  34. I call that the missionary myth because God has a plan and purpose for each of you.

  35. Every single one of you, it doesn't matter your age or your gender, God has an amazing plan for your life.

  36. The second, not only do I hear people talk about missionaries only having it,

  37. but then the second is the misery myth.

  38. And this is what I get a lot too.

  39. They'll say, well, here's the thing.

  40. I'm scared of God's will.

  41. Well, I'm scared of it because if I surrender to God's will, I'm going to be miserable and he'll do something crazy and just ruin my life, wreck my life.

  42. Well, here's what God's word says about God's will.

  43. It says that it's three things.

  44. You ready?

  45. Good, pleasing, and perfect.

  46. God's will for your life is good, it's pleasing, and it's perfect.

  47. There is no misery in God's will.

  48. And then third is the missed it myth, the missed it myth.

  49. That's where so many people, they'll say, you know, I hear this a lot in the seniors, the older people.

  50. They'll say, you know what, whenever I was young, you know, God called me to fill in the blank, but I missed it.

  51. I missed my opportunity.

  52. I sinned too much.

  53. I messed up too much.

  54. I went down the wrong path, and I missed it.

  55. I want to tell you today, God's a God of second chances, and if you're still feeling the spirit of God move in your life, if you're still breathing, God has a plan and a purpose for you.

  56. Okay, so with that background of those myths out of the way, let's turn to God's word in Genesis chapter 24.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  57. Genesis chapter 24 describes a man who desperately needed God's will.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  58. And so we're going to examine this text to learn the steps for finding God's will.

  59. Genesis chapter 24, I'm going to read verses 1 and following.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  60. It says,

  61. Now Abraham was old and advanced in age, and the Lord had blessed Abraham in every way.

  62. Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had been in charge of all that he owned,

  63. Please place your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth,

  64. that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.

  65. But you will go to my country and to my relatives and take a servant and take a wife for my son Isaac.

  66. The servant said to him, suppose the woman's not wanting to follow me to this land.

  67. Should I take your son back to the land from where you came?

  68. Then Abraham said to him, beware that you do not take my son back there.

  69. The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth,

  70. and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, to your descendants I will give this land.

  71. He will send his angel before you, and you will take a wife for my son from there.

  72. But if the woman's not willing to follow you, you'll be free from this oath.

  73. Only do not take my son back there.

  74. So the servant placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham, his master,

  75. and swore to him concerning this matter.

  76. Will you pray with me?

  77. Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, I thank you so much that you're an unchangeable God.

  78. Lord, that you are a God that is the same yesterday and today and tomorrow.

  79. I thank you, Lord, that your word is living, it's active, and it applies to us today.

  80. Lord, give us ears to hear, heart that understands.

  81. Lord, help us to understand how we can know your will.

  82. Lord, there's people here today who are broken, hurting, discouraged, and hopeless.

  83. And they need to be reminded that there is a God who sees them and has something amazing for them.

  84. Pray this now in Jesus' name.

  85. Amen.

  86. This particular passage, it's interesting when it starts out.

  87. Because you basically have a situation of a dad.

  88. So you can kind of put yourself in that situation.

  89. He was a dad, and he was trying to find a spouse for his son.

  90. And so I'm used to the church plant that I'm part of in the Hamilton area.

  91. A little bit more interactive.

  92. So help me feel like I'm back at home, okay?

  93. So if I ask a question, it's not a rhetorical question.

  94. I don't ask rhetorical questions.

  95. So if I ask a question, please answer.

  96. I don't want to be embarrassed.

  97. Help me out.

  98. All right.

  99. So with that being said, I want to know who my audience is.

  100. All right.

  101. So if you are married, I would say happily married, but I get fewer hands.

  102. If you are married, just raise your hand.

  103. All right.

  104. So we've got a lot of married folks.

  105. Okay.

  106. All right.

  107. If you are widowed, raise your hand.

  108. Okay.

  109. All right.

  110. If you are single, raise your hand.

  111. All right.

  112. All right.

  113. So with that being said, so all of us can really understand that the realness,

  114. of this text.

  115. It was a dad who just wanted a godly spouse for his son, and he wanted God's will.

  116. And it's something we should all want.

  117. We should want God's will when we're making a big decision.

  118. So here he was.

  119. He was trying to make a big decision, and you've got to realize how hard it would have

  120. been to find a good spouse back then.

  121. So right now, I looked at this stuff last week.

  122. The average marriage right now, 2025, somewhere between 60 and 70% of people who are married

  123. right now meet their spouse online.

  124. Huge percentage.

  125. All right.

  126. It used to be like church and work.

  127. Now, number one is online.

  128. And so you've got to realize, all right, so we're going back thousands of years ago.

  129. There was no online, right?

  130. There's no social media.

  131. And so here, this servant had this brutal task.

  132. Hey, go, and he's not even bringing the dude with him, right?

  133. So he didn't even have a picture of Isaac.

  134. It would just say, servant, you go and find a wife for my son.

  135. We're staying here, though.

  136. Huge job.

  137. Huge job.

  138. Huge decision.

  139. And so maybe you're there today.

  140. You have some decision.

  141. You have something.

  142. You're just trying to figure out, all right, God, what is your will in fill in the blank?

  143. What do you do?

  144. I'm going to give you four steps for finding God's will according to this text.

  145. The first is this.

  146. How do you find God's will?

  147. Number one, God's will is found in his word.

  148. God's will is found in his word.

  149. Look at verse 7.

  150. This is what Abraham said to him.

  151. It says, the Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth, and he spoke to me and swore to me, saying, to your descendants, I'll give the land.

  152. So he remembered.

  153. He wanted to know God's will.

  154. So where did he go to try to find God's will?

  155. He remembered the word of the Lord.

  156. God's will for your life is always found in the word of God.

  157. I'll put it another way.

  158. God's will never contradicts his word.

  159. Never contradicts it.

  160. And so there's something in your life and you're praying about and you're wondering, is it God's will?

  161. And it goes completely against some scripture by default.

  162. You know it's not.

  163. You know it's not.

  164. You don't even have to pray about it.

  165. There are some situations you don't even have to pray about.

  166. Some of you are looking at me like I'm a heretic, all right?

  167. So let me explain that.

  168. All right, so if you have a situation, like let's say you have a young man and he's found this young woman and he's like, look, she's fine, all right?

  169. Like I like that girl.

  170. And like I'm going to ask her out.

  171. But he's a young Christian and he finds out that she's not.

  172. He doesn't even have to pray about it.

  173. He doesn't even have to pray about it because God's word says you shall not be unequally yoked with a non-believer.

  174. All right, so there's some things you don't even have to pray about.

  175. If it goes against God's word, it goes against God's will.

  176. All right, so how do you find God's will?

  177. Well, starting out, it's just simple.

  178. It's God's will is found in his word.

  179. And so for me and my family, it started, I was a pastor for 10 years in Mississippi.

  180. And then in 2019, I was pastoring at a church in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

  181. The great church is one of our primary partnering churches, our sending church.

  182. And I had just started a PhD program.

  183. And I'll be honest with you, I was tired.

  184. That's really how this whole story started.

  185. The whole journey to Canada started because I was tired.

  186. All right, so don't underestimate when you're tired and God's breaking you because that's when God can use you.

  187. When you're full of pride and things are going well, you miss it.

  188. But when you're at a point of brokenness and hopelessness and exhaustion, that's when you will seek God more.

  189. Okay, so I was broken.

  190. I was tired.

  191. I was pastoring a church, writing sermons.

  192. And so I'm thankful for your pastor.

  193. I'm thankful that he preaches the word of God.

  194. Just so you know, it takes a lot of work to write sermons, a lot of heartache to study God's word and to do it faithfully.

  195. And so I'm thankful for your pastor.

  196. And so there I was trying to write sermons, working on my PhD program.

  197. I'm exhausted.

  198. So I thought, you know what I need?

  199. I need a break.

  200. How does a pastor get a break?

  201. I need a break by having a Bible study.

  202. All right?

  203. So a little behind the scenes, what pastors do when they do a DVD Bible study.

  204. They give themselves a break.

  205. So I decided, all right, I want as long of a break as I can have.

  206. So I found this Bible study that was written 30 years ago.

  207. The name of the Bible study, the only reason I picked it is it was 12 weeks.

  208. So that meant if we did a Bible study on Sunday night, I got 12 weeks off.

  209. This is going to be awesome.

  210. All right, the name of the Bible study was Experiencing God.

  211. Now, out of curiosity, and again, raise your hand, interact with me a little bit.

  212. How many of you have actually done the Experiencing God Bible study?

  213. Raise your hand.

  214. All right, you got a few of you.

  215. All right, I do encourage you at some point, lead your church through this Bible study.

  216. But I will tell you this, be prepared for that Bible study to wreck you.

  217. Because that's what it did for me and my family.

  218. It wrecked us.

  219. I remember five weeks in, fifth week of not having to preach Sunday night.

  220. I love preaching, but I was just tired.

  221. I needed a break.

  222. I was sitting over there on the left side, because apparently that's just where, I don't know.

  223. It's a Baptist thing.

  224. Pastors just sit over there.

  225. You know, you have that assigned seating.

  226. So I'm over there.

  227. I'm with my wife.

  228. And Henry Blackaby started preaching from a familiar text.

  229. I've heard it.

  230. I've preached it.

  231. But have you ever had those moments when you read the Bible and it's just like the words just jump off?

  232. Or you hear a sermon and it's like the pastor just speaking to you.

  233. That's how it was.

  234. We were just there.

  235. We were listening, just watching this 30-year-old DVD study.

  236. I mean, it's almost like black and white.

  237. So dated.

  238. But that's the thing about the Word of God is that it's fresher than tomorrow's newspaper.

  239. It doesn't return void.

  240. And so as he's preaching by DVD 30 years ago, this was his text, that we need to be willing to leave everything behind and follow Jesus.

  241. Leave your mother.

  242. Leave your father.

  243. Leave your brother, your sister, and your farms.

  244. I remember just sitting there on the front row.

  245. And it's just the Word of God was just so real in that moment.

  246. I remember my wife just reached over and just squeezed my hand because we just knew that God was about to do something.

  247. So after the service was over, we released everyone.

  248. And it was just me and my wife.

  249. We were just in the sanctuary.

  250. And she said, Charlie, have you ever considered church planting?

  251. That's just a fancy term for starting a brand new church.

  252. Well, I didn't know anything about church planting.

  253. The only type of church planting I knew was church splits.

  254. Because that's kind of how Baptists start new churches.

  255. You split and then a group gets mad and they start a new church.

  256. That's all I knew about church planting.

  257. So I was like, I don't, yeah.

  258. She said, do you feel like God is calling you to plant a church?

  259. And I said, yeah, I do.

  260. I said, right now, for the first time ever, it's all I can think about.

  261. And that conversation just started.

  262. So that in mind, that happened on a Monday night.

  263. It just started with the Word of God.

  264. Word of God.

  265. Listening to the Word of God.

  266. So how do you find God's will?

  267. It starts with the Word of God.

  268. Then we see this continue in Genesis chapter 24, 10 through 14.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  269. It says,

  270. Then the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master,

  271. and he set out a variety of good things from his master's hand.

  272. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.

  273. And he made the camels kneel down outside the city of the well of water at evening time,

  274. the time when women go out to draw water.

  275. Now, that's significant.

  276. We'll come back to that.

  277. And he said, he prayed this prayer.

  278. Listened to this prayer.

  279. He said,

  280. Oh, Lord, the God of my master Abraham,

  281. Please grant me success today,

  282. and show loving kindness to my master Abraham.

  283. Behold, I'm standing by the spring,

  284. and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.

  285. Now may it be that the girl to whom I say,

  286. Please let down your jar so that I might drink.

  287. And he answers,

  288. Drink!

  289. And I'll water your camels also.

  290. May she be the one whom he's appointed for your servant Isaac.

  291. And by this I will know that you have showed loving kindness to my master.

  292. All right.

  293. So, here was his strategy.

  294. He had a good strategy.

  295. All right.

  296. So, he's looking for a woman.

  297. He goes where the women are.

  298. Right?

  299. That's a pretty good strategy.

  300. And we as Southern Baptists, we love our strategy.

  301. I mean, if you've been a part of a Baptist church for any number of time,

  302. you're going to have strategy after strategy.

  303. You're going to go to this event and, you know, learn how to grow a church,

  304. how to do this, and strategy, strategy, strategy.

  305. I'm not against strategy.

  306. I like strategy.

  307. However, this is what I've found,

  308. especially being in a cross-cultural place for five years,

  309. is that culture eats strategy for breakfast.

  310. You can have so much strategy, it will not work.

  311. But what always works is dependence on the power and spirit of God.

  312. And so, here was the man who had a strategy,

  313. but he invited the spirit to come in and disrupt his strategy.

  314. So, have a plan, but let God move in that plan.

  315. So, his plan was to find a woman.

  316. Where did he go?

  317. He went where the women are.

  318. All right.

  319. That's a good plan.

  320. But when he got there, he had a problem

  321. because there was tons of women.

  322. So, if you're a guy, you're thinking, man, that's not a problem.

  323. Okay, but it was a problem.

  324. Okay.

  325. It was a problem because he only needed one.

  326. So, he needed one woman, but there was multiple women.

  327. And that's the problem we have in life,

  328. is that we'll have multiple decisions.

  329. It's like we always pray, God, close all the doors.

  330. And sometimes he does,

  331. but a lot of times we just have various options.

  332. So, what do you do when you have various options

  333. and you're trying to find God's will?

  334. Well, notice what he does.

  335. He prayed a specific prayer.

  336. A big, bold, specific prayer.

  337. This is what he said.

  338. Lord, let the right girl be the girl

  339. who not only offers to give me something to drink,

  340. but also offers water to my ten camels.

  341. All right, so how do you find God's will?

  342. Number one, God's will is found in his word.

  343. Number two, God's word is found

  344. through praying specific prayers.

  345. Specific prayers.

  346. Now, I feel like the reason

  347. many times we don't pray specific prayers

  348. is because we're scared to.

  349. We're afraid that God won't answer

  350. or we're afraid he will.

  351. So, for us, 2019,

  352. we knew, we felt like God was calling us

  353. to church planting.

  354. The natural question became where, right?

  355. I mean, we're in Mississippi.

  356. We could have gone anywhere in the planet.

  357. Where?

  358. Why?

  359. Why did you go to Canada?

  360. On a Monday night,

  361. I'm sitting in my kitchen with my wife

  362. and she said,

  363. all right, Charlie,

  364. if God's calling us to church planting,

  365. where should we go?

  366. And I just said, honestly, I have no clue.

  367. Like, I'm still trying to get my mind around this whole

  368. maybe God's calling us to something type thing.

  369. I have no clue.

  370. And this is what she said.

  371. She said, Charlie,

  372. I just can't get Canada out of my mind.

  373. Now, you gotta remember,

  374. this was before the whole Trump thing,

  375. 51st state thing, okay?

  376. So, this wasn't,

  377. Canada wasn't on the news all the time,

  378. all right?

  379. This was just like,

  380. no one was talking about Canada.

  381. But she just said,

  382. I just can't get Canada out of my mind.

  383. And this is what I said to her.

  384. I said, Canada?

  385. Canada?

  386. Canada?

  387. I said, that's missionary stuff.

  388. That's missionary stuff.

  389. I'm not a missionary.

  390. I'm just a pastor in the South.

  391. And her being a good Southern woman,

  392. she just kind of bucked up and said,

  393. well, that's just what I think God wants me to tell you.

  394. And she politely stormed off.

  395. So here I was,

  396. just left in the kitchen

  397. with a word from the Lord from my wife.

  398. And so I just went into the living room

  399. and just started praying.

  400. And this is what I prayed.

  401. I said, God,

  402. I'll go wherever you want me to go.

  403. And I'll do whatever you want me to do.

  404. But make it clear.

  405. If you make it clear,

  406. I'll go,

  407. I'll go wherever.

  408. Or I'll stay.

  409. Like,

  410. I love being a pastor.

  411. I loved being a traditional pastor.

  412. I loved walking with people

  413. through hardship in life.

  414. I loved it.

  415. Some pastors that I can't get away,

  416. I loved being a traditional pastor.

  417. And I said,

  418. God,

  419. I'll stay here or I'll go.

  420. You just make it crystal clear.

  421. We had that whole conversation

  422. on a Monday

  423. in April 2019.

  424. Six days later,

  425. the following Sunday,

  426. all of a sudden,

  427. I preached at my church.

  428. One of my good friends,

  429. another pastor in Mississippi,

  430. his name is Jonathan Bryant,

  431. he sent me a text message

  432. after the service was over.

  433. And he said,

  434. hey,

  435. Charlie,

  436. be praying for me and my wife.

  437. We feel like God's doing something.

  438. He's stirring in our hearts.

  439. He said,

  440. I don't want to talk about it,

  441. but will you pray for us?

  442. The timing was bizarre,

  443. wasn't it?

  444. So I just messaged him back.

  445. I said,

  446. I'll pray,

  447. and I don't want to pry.

  448. I really did want to pry.

  449. I don't want to pry,

  450. but does this have anything

  451. to do with church planting?

  452. And he said,

  453. yes.

  454. He wrote back,

  455. yes.

  456. I said,

  457. where?

  458. And he texted back,

  459. Toronto,

  460. Canada.

  461. I remember I just looked

  462. at that text message,

  463. and I just showed it to my wife,

  464. and she just started laughing.

  465. She said,

  466. I told you.

  467. I told you it was Canada.

  468. And I just went into our closet

  469. and just started sobbing

  470. because I knew that the life

  471. that I had planned,

  472. I knew the trajectory

  473. that I was making for my life

  474. was going to be vastly different.

  475. That's how it all started.

  476. How do you find God's will?

  477. It always begins with God's word.

  478. It's not a mystery.

  479. It's not.

  480. It's clear.

  481. If you're truly seeking God,

  482. he will make it clear.

  483. It's found in his word.

  484. Second,

  485. it's found by praying

  486. specific prayers.

  487. I want you to continue

  488. in this story.

  489. Notice how the text continues

  490. in verse 15 through 18.

  491. How did God respond

  492. to that big, bold prayer

  493. that this man prayed?

  494. Look at verse 15.

  495. It says,

  496. Before he had finished speaking,

  497. behold,

  498. behold,

  499. Rebecca,

  500. who is born of Bethel,

  501. son of Michal,

  502. the wife of Abraham's brother,

  503. Naor,

  504. came out with a jar

  505. on her shoulder.

  506. The girl was very beautiful,

  507. a virgin,

  508. and no man had relations with her.

  509. And she went down

  510. to the spring

  511. and filled her jar

  512. and came up.

  513. Now the servant

  514. ran out to meet her

  515. and said,

  516. please,

  517. let me drink a little bit

  518. of water from your jar.

  519. And she said,

  520. drink,

  521. my Lord.

  522. And she quickly

  523. lowered her jar

  524. in her hand

  525. and gave him a drink.

  526. And when she had finished

  527. giving him a drink,

  528. she said,

  529. I will draw also

  530. for your camels

  531. until they have

  532. finished drinking.

  533. So she quickly

  534. emptied her jar

  535. through the trough

  536. and ran back

  537. to the well

  538. and she drew

  539. for all of his camels.

  540. Meanwhile,

  541. the man was gazing

  542. at her in silence

  543. to know whether

  544. the Lord had made

  545. his journey successful

  546. or not.

  547. I love the timing

  548. of this.

  549. I love the timing

  550. of that text.

  551. Notice what it says.

  552. While he was still

  553. speaking.

  554. So he had a word

  555. from God.

  556. He prayed a specific prayer.

  557. While he was still

  558. speaking,

  559. this happened.

  560. Now,

  561. I do want to kind of

  562. time out.

  563. Sometimes,

  564. God will answer

  565. your prayer right away.

  566. And it's awesome

  567. when he does that.

  568. But most of the time,

  569. it's not.

  570. Most of the time,

  571. there's a long delay.

  572. God's delays

  573. don't mean denials.

  574. All right?

  575. And so if you're praying,

  576. keep on praying.

  577. It might be months.

  578. It might be years.

  579. But prayer,

  580. pray that specific prayer

  581. and then watch

  582. and see.

  583. So that's what

  584. this man did.

  585. Pray that specific prayer.

  586. Lord,

  587. let it be the one

  588. who offers me

  589. something to drink

  590. and then offers

  591. to water my camels

  592. as well.

  593. He said,

  594. well,

  595. what was significant

  596. about that?

  597. What was significant

  598. was that in that culture,

  599. it would be common

  600. for a woman

  601. to give a man

  602. something to drink.

  603. It was not common.

  604. It just wasn't a thing

  605. to offer

  606. to water all the camels.

  607. Notice the text

  608. tells us

  609. how many camels he had.

  610. It says he had

  611. 10 camels.

  612. Now,

  613. I looked this up.

  614. The average camel

  615. drank somewhere

  616. between like 25

  617. and 30 gallons

  618. of water.

  619. All right,

  620. so a well

  621. in that culture

  622. would have a,

  623. you know,

  624. a pitcher

  625. and that pitcher

  626. would hold

  627. about two to three

  628. gallons of water.

  629. So this woman,

  630. after giving him

  631. something to drink,

  632. would have had

  633. to go to the well,

  634. lower the pitcher,

  635. get two or three gallons,

  636. pull it back up,

  637. empty,

  638. empty,

  639. empty.

  640. One commenter

  641. said it probably

  642. took two to three

  643. sweaty hours

  644. for this young girl

  645. to water all those camels

  646. for someone she didn't know.

  647. And the entire time

  648. you say,

  649. well,

  650. what's the servant doing?

  651. It says that he's

  652. just stepped back

  653. and just examining

  654. the circumstances

  655. to see if God

  656. has answered

  657. the prayer.

  658. So how do you find

  659. God's will?

  660. Number one,

  661. God's will is found

  662. in his word.

  663. Number two,

  664. God's will is found

  665. in praying specific prayers.

  666. Number three,

  667. God's will is found

  668. through examining

  669. God-ordained circumstances.

  670. God-ordained circumstances.

  671. Here's something

  672. I learned a long time ago.

  673. There are no coincidences

  674. in the kingdom of God.

  675. There are none.

  676. And so that thing

  677. you've been praying about

  678. that all of a sudden,

  679. oh, it just happened

  680. to be that way.

  681. No.

  682. It was God interrupting

  683. your life.

  684. God interrupts

  685. our lives.

  686. So here we were,

  687. 2019.

  688. Word of God,

  689. we felt like

  690. he was calling us.

  691. All of a sudden,

  692. we feel like maybe

  693. God's calling us to Canada.

  694. So we did as

  695. Southern Baptists.

  696. We have an amazing

  697. denomination here.

  698. It's called

  699. Southern Baptists

  700. here in the States

  701. in America.

  702. The Canadian branch

  703. is called

  704. the Canadian National

  705. Baptist Convention.

  706. They changed the name

  707. just a couple of years ago

  708. because when you're

  709. in Canada

  710. and you say

  711. you're Southern Baptist

  712. and they call themselves

  713. the True North,

  714. it's a little bit confusing.

  715. So they just changed the name,

  716. but it's the same.

  717. We're all connected.

  718. All right?

  719. So if you're interested

  720. in starting a church,

  721. you go through the,

  722. it's called the Sin Network,

  723. North American Mission Board.

  724. You do an assessment,

  725. and the purpose

  726. of that assessment

  727. is to see if they believe

  728. that you and your family

  729. are qualified

  730. and called

  731. and will survive

  732. starting a new church.

  733. So in 2019,

  734. I'm there with my wife.

  735. At that point,

  736. we had three children.

  737. Our youngest daughter

  738. was 18 months,

  739. had a five-year-old

  740. and had a seven-year-old.

  741. And Mississippi pastors

  742. in a non-multicultural church,

  743. and we said,

  744. we feel like God's calling us

  745. to Canada

  746. to reach the nations

  747. in a multicultural place.

  748. And so we had this long video chat,

  749. and basically what they told us

  750. is, look,

  751. we sensed your calling,

  752. but the question is this,

  753. not if you're called.

  754. The question is,

  755. are you called now?

  756. Are you called now?

  757. Because you have young children.

  758. Because,

  759. and I didn't know this,

  760. you have to raise

  761. all your own funds.

  762. They said, look,

  763. this is going to be

  764. the hardest thing

  765. you've ever done.

  766. And to be honest with you,

  767. many people go through

  768. this process,

  769. and it will wreck

  770. their marriage.

  771. It'll wreck

  772. their children.

  773. It'll ruin everything

  774. if God's not in it.

  775. So make sure God's in it.

  776. They said,

  777. take the weekend

  778. just to pray

  779. and make sure

  780. God is in this

  781. so you don't ruin your lives.

  782. So we got off

  783. on Thursday night

  784. of that meeting

  785. honestly frustrated

  786. and discouraged.

  787. but after being in Canada

  788. for five years,

  789. I get it.

  790. I get it.

  791. It's hard.

  792. It's hard soil.

  793. So,

  794. what do you do?

  795. All of a sudden

  796. we needed to know

  797. God's will

  798. and we needed to know it now.

  799. We needed clarity.

  800. And this text,

  801. the idea of this text,

  802. just praying specific prayers

  803. came to mind.

  804. We'd already seen God

  805. answer one prayer request

  806. about Canada,

  807. so it's,

  808. all right,

  809. let's pray again.

  810. And while we were praying

  811. and while we were seeking God,

  812. Leslie mentioned that

  813. one of the men

  814. that was interviewing us,

  815. he said this,

  816. he said,

  817. Charlie,

  818. sometimes God needs to

  819. just hit you in the head

  820. with a two by four.

  821. It's an odd thing to say,

  822. but he said it.

  823. So,

  824. we're praying

  825. about what to pray

  826. because we needed to know

  827. specifically in four days.

  828. And so on that,

  829. last point,

  830. it's Friday morning

  831. or Thursday

  832. right before Good Friday.

  833. I'm praying

  834. about what I need to pray.

  835. She mentioned the two by four

  836. and I said,

  837. all right,

  838. honey,

  839. let's do this.

  840. And let me just first say

  841. kind of a note.

  842. It's not that I don't recommend this,

  843. it's just going to sound strange.

  844. All right?

  845. And so,

  846. trust the word of God.

  847. Let me just say that

  848. before I share this story.

  849. So,

  850. we were desperate.

  851. And here's the thing,

  852. when you read stories

  853. of men in scripture

  854. right before God

  855. just does something amazing,

  856. it's desperate people.

  857. It's broken people,

  858. it's hopeless people.

  859. And that's where we were,

  860. broken,

  861. hopeless,

  862. felt called,

  863. but felt like

  864. there was just no way

  865. we would actually be able to go.

  866. And so,

  867. whenever she mentioned,

  868. hey,

  869. sometimes God needs to just

  870. hit you in the head

  871. with a two by four,

  872. I just had this idea,

  873. two by four.

  874. I said,

  875. all right,

  876. honey,

  877. this is what we're going to do.

  878. We're going to pray

  879. that between now and Monday,

  880. God will give us

  881. a literal,

  882. a real two by four board.

  883. And she just kind of

  884. looked at me,

  885. kind of like,

  886. y'all are looking at me like,

  887. what?

  888. Like,

  889. what are you talking about?

  890. I said,

  891. all right,

  892. all right.

  893. I said,

  894. hear me out.

  895. All right,

  896. hear me out.

  897. I said,

  898. this is what we're going to pray.

  899. We're going to pray that

  900. between now and Monday,

  901. if God wants us to go to Canada,

  902. he will give us a two by four board.

  903. If he does not give us

  904. a two by four board by Monday,

  905. we will not go to Canada.

  906. I said,

  907. but we got to have

  908. some parameters around this.

  909. I said,

  910. three rules for this specific prayer.

  911. Number one,

  912. we can't go looking for a two by four.

  913. Right?

  914. So you can't just like

  915. go to Home Depot,

  916. walk down the wood aisle

  917. and be like,

  918. ta-da,

  919. like hundreds of two by fours

  920. God answered.

  921. Right?

  922. We can't go looking

  923. for the two by fours.

  924. Number two,

  925. they can't be attached

  926. to anything.

  927. You can't just be driving

  928. down the road and,

  929. hey,

  930. look,

  931. there's a deck

  932. right over there.

  933. Decks are made

  934. by two by fours.

  935. Like,

  936. it's God.

  937. No,

  938. it can't be attached

  939. to anything.

  940. And then three,

  941. it has to be somewhere

  942. it's not supposed to be.

  943. That's the parameters.

  944. So,

  945. okay.

  946. Because here's the thing,

  947. and I'm more convinced

  948. of this than ever before,

  949. that God is an unchangeable God.

  950. He's characteristic.

  951. He's unchanging.

  952. He's the same yesterday,

  953. today,

  954. and tomorrow.

  955. So the stories

  956. that we read about God

  957. in Scripture,

  958. He's still alive.

  959. He's still moving

  960. through His people

  961. today,

  962. in 2025,

  963. the same way

  964. that He was then.

  965. All right,

  966. so we prayed that prayer.

  967. But here's where people

  968. go wrong

  969. when they're seeking

  970. God's will.

  971. They don't tell anyone.

  972. They don't tell anyone.

  973. So they say,

  974. okay,

  975. God,

  976. I'll do this,

  977. I'll do that,

  978. I'll go there,

  979. but you don't tell anyone

  980. and then you have

  981. no accountability.

  982. And so what I did

  983. just,

  984. me and Leslie

  985. prayed Thursday morning.

  986. I get in my truck.

  987. My truck to the church

  988. that I pastored

  989. was about a five-minute drive.

  990. And so I called up

  991. my friend,

  992. Jonathan,

  993. the other pastor

  994. in Mississippi,

  995. for accountability.

  996. I called him,

  997. I said,

  998. hey,

  999. Jonathan,

1000. do you believe in prayer?

  1001. And he said,

  1002. yeah,

  1003. I believe,

  1004. you know,

  1005. Baptist pastor,

  1006. what is he supposed

  1007. to say?

  1008. Yeah,

  1009. I believe in prayer.

  1010. I said,

  1011. pray for a two-by-four.

  1012. And once again,

  1013. he had that silence

  1014. on the phone,

  1015. like,

1016. what are you talking about?

  1017. Explain the whole thing.

  1018. All right,

  1019. God,

1020. this is what we're praying for.

  1021. You can't be attached

  1022. to anything,

  1023. you know.

  1024. And while I'm talking

1025. to him on the way

  1026. to church,

  1027. right before Good Friday,

  1028. getting ready

1029. for our big Easter service,

  1030. I see a board

1031. on the side of the road,

1032. right on the yellow line,

  1033. about 100,

  1034. 200 feet

  1035. from the church.

  1036. And I said,

  1037. hold on a second.

  1038. I said,

1039. I'm pulling off right now,

  1040. I see a board.

  1041. And he's still,

  1042. he's like,

  1043. a board,

1044. what are you talking about?

  1045. He's like,

  1046. just,

  1047. get out.

  1048. And I said,

  1049. look,

  1050. if this board's not

  1051. a two-by-four,

  1052. it means nothing.

  1053. I got out,

1054. and I picked it up,

  1055. and it was a six-foot

  1056. two-by-four board.

  1057. And so I'm holding

  1058. that two-by-four board,

1059. and I'm on the phone

  1060. with him.

  1061. And I said,

  1062. man,

  1063. I'm holding a two-by-four

  1064. board right now.

  1065. And he said,

1066. remind me what that means again.

  1067. And I said,

  1068. brother,

  1069. it means that we're

  1070. going to Canada,

1071. and we're going right now.

  1072. And you see,

  1073. that's the picture.

  1074. So I was in a

1075. old pickup truck that day,

  1076. driving to my church,

  1077. and there's the board

  1078. that God used.

  1079. Now,

  1080. I'll tell you that,

1081. and it still feels weird

  1082. telling that story.

  1083. And so here's what I don't

1084. want you to take away.

  1085. I don't want you to take

  1086. from that,

1087. that you need to be praying

  1088. for all these signs

  1089. and wonders.

  1090. Okay?

  1091. Jesus said,

  1092. you know,

  1093. that the Gentiles

  1094. pray for signs.

  1095. Okay?

  1096. But,

  1097. God

  1098. is a God

  1099. who hears

  1100. our prayers

  1101. and our cries.

1102. And so in those moments

  1103. of desperation,

  1104. and the Bible also

  1105. tells us that

  1106. the Holy Spirit

  1107. will intercede

  1108. intercede for us

  1109. when we don't know

  1110. what to pray.

  1111. And so this isn't a

  1112. prayer of,

  1113. hey,

1114. pray for signs and wonders.

  1115. It's just,

  1116. God answers prayer.

  1117. That particular day,

1118. I just happened to pray

  1119. for a two-by-four board.

1120. And so in your life,

  1121. in your situation

  1122. that's unique to you,

  1123. and you're seeking

  1124. God's will,

  1125. and you're wondering,

  1126. how do I find God's will?

  1127. Start with God's word.

  1128. What is God's heart?

  1129. God's the creator

  1130. of the universe,

1131. and this is his instruction

  1132. manual for your life.

  1133. What is God's will

  1134. for your life?

  1135. It's in his word.

  1136. Pray specific prayers.

  1137. Examine the circumstances.

  1138. Then I want you

  1139. to notice last,

  1140. notice how this man

  1141. responded.

  1142. Verse 26.

  1143. It says,

1144. And the man bowed low,

1145. and he worshiped the Lord.

  1146. And he said,

  1147. Blessed be the Lord,

1148. the God of my master Abraham,

  1149. who has not forsaken

  1150. his love and kindness,

  1151. and his truth

  1152. towards my master.

  1153. As for me,

1154. the Lord has guided me

1155. in the way to his house

  1156. of my master's brother.

  1157. All of a sudden,

  1158. this man,

  1159. after examining everything,

  1160. after praying this big,

  1161. bold, specific prayer,

1162. he just had this peace of God

1163. that led him to worship.

  1164. So four,

1165. how do you find God's will?

  1166. God's will is found

  1167. through the Spirit's peace.

  1168. God's will is found

  1169. through the Spirit's peace.

1170. You go through that process,

1171. and if it's of God,

1172. you'll just feel the Spirit

  1173. just saying,

  1174. this is right.

1175. This is the way of the Lord.

  1176. Walk in it.

1177. But if you have a check

  1178. in your spirit,

  1179. just don't live forward.

  1180. Just hold up.

  1181. Just keep on praying.

  1182. Henry Blackaby,

1183. who went to be with the Lord

  1184. a couple years ago,

  1185. whenever he was writing

  1186. that Bible study,

  1187. over 30 years,

  1188. I think it's,

  1189. man,

  1190. it's probably closer

  1191. to 35, 40 years ago now.

  1192. When he was writing

  1193. that Bible study,

1194. he had the whole Bible study

  1195. written,

1196. but he hadn't picked out

  1197. a name yet.

  1198. You know,

  1199. he didn't know

1200. what to name this Bible study,

1201. this book that he had written.

1202. And so he came to Lifeway,

  1203. and he presented

  1204. the Bible study,

  1205. and he said,

1206. what should we call this study?

  1207. And he said,

  1208. oh, we know.

  1209. You should call it

  1210. Knowing God,

1211. because you learn so much

  1212. about God

  1213. in this study.

1214. And here's what Henry said.

  1215. He said,

  1216. I don't want people

  1217. to know God,

  1218. because that's just

  1219. head knowledge.

  1220. We as Southern Baptists,

  1221. we know God.

  1222. We do.

  1223. Our problem is that

  1224. we're educated

  1225. beyond our obedience level.

1226. This is what he said.

  1227. He said,

1228. we want to have people

  1229. experience God.

  1230. In the same way

  1231. that people experience God

  1232. in the Bible,

  1233. I want people

  1234. to experience God now,

  1235. because he's unchanging.

  1236. Name it,

  1237. Experiencing God.

  1238. These last five years

  1239. have been incredibly difficult

1240. for me and my family,

1241. but it has been amazing.

1242. And I can tell you

  1243. we have experienced God

  1244. in amazing ways.

  1245. The will of God,

  1246. it's good,

  1247. it's pleasing,

  1248. and it's perfect.

1249. And when I look out

  1250. and I see you,

  1251. I just see a group

  1252. of men and women

  1253. and children and youth

1254. of people who aren't perfect,

  1255. are fallen,

  1256. broken,

  1257. hurting,

  1258. struggling,

  1259. and that tells me

  1260. that's exactly

  1261. who God wants.

  1262. That's you.

1263. Because if you're sitting there

  1264. and you're saying,

  1265. oh man,

  1266. I'm amazing,

  1267. I'm awesome,

1268. I'm exactly who God wants,

  1269. he doesn't want you.

1270. He uses the most unlikely people

1271. so that he gets the glory.

  1272. And so I don't know

  1273. where God's calling you,

  1274. I don't know your story,

  1275. I don't know what God's will

  1276. is for your life,

  1277. but he's good.

  1278. He's good.

  1279. People need the gospel

  1280. here in Mississippi,

  1281. people need the gospel

  1282. in Canada,

  1283. people need the gospel

1284. to the ends of the earth.

  1285. People need the Lord.

1286. I invite you to come

1287. and just surrender your life

  1288. to the Lord

  1289. and say,

  1290. Lord,

  1291. I'm in.

  1292. Whatever,

  1293. wherever,

  1294. I'm all in

  1295. and you'll experience God

  1296. in amazing,

  1297. amazing ways.

1298. Will you pray with me?

  1299. Dear Heavenly Father,

1300. I thank you so much,

  1301. Lord,

  1302. that you are unchanging.

  1303. I thank you, Lord,

1304. that we can read these stories

  1305. with excitement

1306. knowing that you haven't changed.

  1307. Lord,

1308. people try to convince us

  1309. that you've changed,

  1310. that society has changed,

  1311. that, oh,

  1312. well,

1313. that's how it used to be,

  1314. but your word says

  1315. that hasn't.

1316. Help us to have bold faith

  1317. to take your promises

  1318. and stand on them

1319. so that we can truly see

  1320. a movement of God.

  1321. Lord,

1322. be with those who heard today

1323. who are wrestling right now

1324. with what they've just heard.

  1325. Some of them,

  1326. Lord,

  1327. you are reminding them

  1328. of a promise

1329. that they made to you

  1330. maybe yesterday,

  1331. maybe last week,

  1332. maybe 50 years ago.

  1333. And they're sitting there

  1334. thinking,

  1335. no,

  1336. no,

  1337. that's,

  1338. I've missed it,

  1339. not me,

  1340. it's all wrong.

1341. But let them feel the spirit,

1342. let them hear the voice

  1343. of you calling out.

  1344. People need the Lord.

  1345. The harvest is plentiful,

  1346. the weak,

  1347. the workers are few.

  1348. But this church,

  1349. First Baptist,

  1350. Lord,

  1351. help it to be

  1352. ascending field

  1353. so that people

  1354. from every nation,

  1355. every tongue,

  1356. every tribe

  1357. can hear the gospel.

  1358. From Mississippi

  1359. to Toronto

1360. to the ends of the earth.

1361. Thank you for letting us

1362. be a part of that.

  1363. Praise you for using

  1364. ordinary,

  1365. broken,

  1366. hopeless,

  1367. sinful people

  1368. for your good.

  1369. Lord,

  1370. we love you

  1371. and we praise you.

  1372. I pray this now

  1373. in Jesus' name.

  1374. Amen.

  1375. Amen.

  1376. Amen.

  1377. Amen.

  1378. Amen.
