  1. What a blessing, what a blessing.

  2. I went to Gardner-Webb.

  3. I was a biblical studies major at Gardner-Webb.

  4. And we, right there on the North Carolina, South Carolina line,

  5. and on Wednesday nights, we'd ride out in the country

  6. to this big old church set out in the middle of nowhere.

  7. And I think it was called Holly Springs Baptist Church,

  8. somewhere in northern South Carolina.

  9. And if she'd have sang that song at that church,

  10. some old boy would have got loose back there and went on a running fit.

  11. Now, that freaks some of y'all out.

  12. But for some of us, Brian, you've been in those atmospheres,

  13. ain't you, brother?

  14. A little sawdust will tear you up, son.

  15. Good stuff.

  16. Thank you so much, Charlotte.

  17. If you have your Bibles, turn to John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  18. John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  19. In the 1870s, archaeologists uncovered in the sands of Egypt

  20. a giant red granite obulus.

  21. They named it Cleopatra's Needle.

  22. And they gave it to England,

  23. which placed the 69-foot shaft

  24. on the banks of the Thames River in London.

  25. They put a time vault in the base of that shaft.

  26. And they put coins in there.

  27. And they put clothes of that day in there.

  28. They put some newspapers in there.

  29. And they put some photographs.

  30. They put some children's toys of that age as well.

  31. And then they formed a committee

  32. to pick the greatest verse in all the Bible

  33. and to put it in the vault.

  34. They chose John 3.16

  35. and they put it in the vault

  36. in all of the other,

  37. more than 200 known languages of that day.

  38. Not only is John 3.16

  39. the most popular verse of Scripture,

  40. but it may be the most impactful verse.

  41. Must be, actually.

  42. It's called the Mount Everest of Scripture.

  43. Martin Luther, the great 16th century reformer,

  44. called it the Bible in miniature.

  45. A.T. Robertson, the greatest Greek scholar

  46. possibly since the time of the Lord,

  47. called it the littlest gospel.

  48. It's also been called the gospel in a nutshell.

  49. And today is March the 16th.

  50. If you abbreviate that, it's 3.16.

  51. It's a great day to celebrate the gospel verse,

  52. John 3.16.

  53. As a matter of fact,

  54. today has been marked the international day

  55. of the gospel.

  56. And so I want us to do something today

  57. to celebrate John 3.16.

  58. I want us to read it together.

  59. If you would stand together with me

  60. and let's read John 3.16.

  61. It says,

  62. You may be seated.

  63. It's such a common verse

  64. that it's likely that we take it for granted.

  65. It sounds simple, but yet it's very profound.

  66. It is inexhaustible, quite honestly.

  67. Dwight L. Moody was a great preacher,

  68. a great evangelist that founded the Moody Bible Church

  69. in Chicago as well as the Moody Bible Institute

  70. and was preaching in the United Kingdom

  71. when a young man began to listen to him preach.

  72. As Moody would travel,

  73. that fellow would travel with him in the UK

  74. and follow him to the next church

  75. and would listen to him again.

  76. And night after night,

  77. he listened to D.L. Moody preach.

  78. He got to know the young man

  79. and the man said that he had a desire

  80. to preach in America.

  81. And Moody invited him and said,

  82. If you ever get there to America,

  83. let me know and I'll let you preach

  84. at Moody Church.

  85. Well, his name was Henry Morehouse.

  86. And sure enough, Henry Morehouse

  87. had the opportunity to travel to America.

  88. And when he did, he contacted Moody.

  89. And Moody said, Well, great.

  90. He said, I'm preaching Sunday morning

  91. and then I'm leaving and going out of town

  92. for a little while.

  93. And so you can preach on Sunday night for me

  94. when I leave.

  95. And that night, Morehouse preached.

  96. And when Moody returned,

  97. several days later,

  98. he found out that Morehouse

  99. not only preached that night,

  100. but he had preached several nights

  101. to a growing crowd every night.

  102. He also found out that every night

  103. that Henry Morehouse preached,

  104. he preached on John 3.16 as his text.

  105. He preached different sermons,

  106. but he always preached on John 3.16.

  107. As a matter of fact,

  108. Morehouse began preaching

  109. when he was 16 years old

  110. and he died at an early age at 33 years old.

  111. But for the 17 years that he preached,

  112. every sermon that he preached,

  113. he preached from John 3.16.

  114. Different sermons,

  115. but every time the same text.

  116. My friend, it is inexhaustible.

  117. And I will not do it justice today,

  118. but I want to have some fun trying.

  119. All I want to tell you

  120. is the same thing that this verse tells you.

  121. And that is,

  122. I want to tell you how to be saved.

  123. Now, I know that may sound overused to some,

  124. but I don't believe there's any need

  125. to fix something that isn't broke

  126. because Jesus still saves.

  127. And our verse today lies in the midst

  128. of an encounter that Jesus had

  129. with a Pharisee named Nicodemus.

  130. Jesus said that when one is changed by Christ,

  131. it makes a world of difference.

  132. It's as if you are starting over,

  133. being born spiritually all over again.

  134. I remember when I was a small child,

  135. I remember hearing President Jimmy Carter

  136. say that he was born again.

  137. And I remember,

  138. even though I was a child at the time,

  139. remember the media giving him a hard time about that,

  140. what it meant to be a born again Christian.

  141. Well, I got news for you.

  142. Jimmy Carter didn't come up with that.

  143. Jesus came up with that.

  144. And when he told Nicodemus that he must be born again,

  145. old Nick, as I love to call him,

  146. didn't understand,

  147. even though he was a religious leader,

  148. schooled in what we now know as the Old Testament.

  149. And so Nicodemus asked him,

  150. how then can I be born again?

  151. And the response of Christ gives us a great glimpse

  152. at the power and the hope of the gospel message,

  153. the good news of Christ.

  154. Notice what he says in John 3, beginning in verse 13.

  155. He said,

  156. No one has ascended into heaven

  157. except he who descended from heaven,

  158. the Son of Man.

  159. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  160. so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  161. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  162. For God so loved the world

  163. that he gave his only Son,

  164. that whoever believes in him should not perish,

  165. but have eternal life.

  166. For God did not send his Son into the world

  167. to condemn the world,

  168. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  169. Whoever believes in him is not condemned,

  170. but whoever does not believe is condemned already,

  171. because he has not believed in the name

  172. of the only Son of God.

  173. It's been said a lot of different ways,

  174. but I want you to see this morning

  175. three steps to being saved.

  176. The first step is this,

  177. to look,

  178. to look.

  179. In describing how a person can be saved,

  180. Jesus referred to Moses

  181. and the serpent in the wilderness.

  182. And that account is found

  183. in Numbers chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  184. Numbers 21 says this,

  185. beginning in verse 4.

  186. For Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea

  187. to go around the land of Edom.

  188. And the people became impatient on the way.

  189. And the people spoke against God and against Moses.

  190. Why have you brought us out of Egypt

  191. to die in the wilderness?

  192. For there's no food and no water,

  193. and we loathe this worthless food.

  194. Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people,

  195. and they bit the people,

  196. so that many people of Israel died.

  197. And the people came to Moses and said,

  198. we have sinned,

  199. for we have spoken against the Lord and against you.

  200. Pray to the Lord that he take away the serpents from us.

  201. So Moses prayed for the people.

  202. And the Lord said to Moses,

  203. make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole,

  204. and everyone who is bitten when he sees it shall live.

  205. So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole.

  206. And if a serpent bit anyone,

  207. he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

  208. It's amazing sometimes what we have to endure

  209. to turn our eyes back to the Lord.

  210. These were a complaining, impatient people.

  211. Surely not Baptist.

  212. And they were upset with their circumstances,

  213. and it just made it worse.

  214. The more they moaned about it,

  215. the worse it got.

  216. That is usually what happens, quite honestly.

  217. The more negative you are about something,

  218. the more you whine and complain,

  219. the worse things will get.

  220. I heard Lou Holtz say one time,

  221. don't complain about your problems.

  222. 90% of people really don't care,

  223. and 10% are glad it's happening to you.

  224. So listen, you got to keep it all in perspective.

  225. A harsh word, but it may be reality.

  226. Complaining does not help.

  227. And when those complained,

  228. the Lord sent serpents that had a fiery bite to them.

  229. Now when it says fiery there,

  230. one, it means it hurt.

  231. The second means it was venomous.

  232. And that woke up folks that were hurting,

  233. and they said,

  234. Moses, you need to call on the Lord.

  235. And Moses called on the Lord.

  236. I hope you know that there would have been

  237. a lot less loss here

  238. if they had turned to the Lord when times got tough.

  239. Instead of turning to each other

  240. and complaining and growing impatient.

  241. Because in reality,

  242. it's not what happens in life.

  243. It's what happens to what happens in life.

  244. How do you respond in life?

  245. They got to the point in their lives

  246. when they turned to God and followed his instruction.

  247. And his instruction was to look to the snake

  248. and find relief.

  249. And they did.

  250. Now you may not seem comfortable about that.

  251. Why in the world would there be a bronze snake for comfort?

  252. Well, I'll tell you why.

  253. Because God gets on our level.

  254. He speaks to where we are.

  255. And these people had been plagued by a tendency

  256. to look at graven images.

  257. Idols that they looked to for strength

  258. and comfort and hope.

  259. And so God gave them an icon

  260. and he instructed them to look at it.

  261. And when they looked at it,

  262. they found healing.

  263. Get this now.

  264. Not because of the snake.

  265. They didn't get their healing because of the snake.

  266. Their healing came in obediently following

  267. what the Lord told them to do.

  268. And just as that serpent was lifted up,

  269. so Christ has been lifted up on the cross.

  270. And when we look to the cross,

  271. we'll find our strength.

  272. When we put our faith in the God

  273. that hung on the cross for our sin,

  274. but first, we have to look.

  275. First, we have to acknowledge it.

  276. We have to see the need.

  277. We don't need to look inside of ourselves for answers.

  278. We need to look to Christ for answers.

  279. That's where the answers are.

  280. But it's not just enough to look.

  281. For the second means,

  282. the second way to come to salvation

  283. is to believe.

  284. To believe.

  285. For after acknowledging our need for help,

  286. we must look to God

  287. and believe

  288. that what he did changes everything.

  289. The key to John 3.16

  290. is the love of God.

  291. He willingly sent his son

  292. to die in our place

  293. because of our sin

  294. so that we could have eternal life.

  295. What kind of love is it

  296. that sends his sinless son to the cross

  297. to die in our place?

  298. All of us,

  299. ugly sinners before God,

  300. quite honestly.

  301. Without the forgiveness of God,

  302. we'd have no hope.

  303. So how is it that he sends his son?

  304. What kind of love is that?

  305. It's a matchless love.

  306. I guess my two favorite songs

  307. that's ever been written

  308. is It Is Well With My Soul

  309. and The Love of God.

  310. And the lyrics of The Love of God say this,

  311. Could we with ink the ocean fill

  312. and with the skies our parchment made

  313. were every stalk on earth a quill

  314. and every man a scribe by trade?

  315. To write the love of God above

  316. would drain the ocean dry,

  317. nor could the scroll contain the whole,

  318. though stretched from sky to sky.

  319. Oh, love of God, how rich and pure,

  320. how measureless and strong,

  321. it shall forevermore endure

  322. the saints and angels song.

  323. Friend, it is a love worth believing.

  324. And that belief is a committing belief.

  325. It is an all-in kind of belief.

  326. It is an action statement

  327. of not just understanding something,

  328. but acting on that,

  329. believing it enough to act on it.

  330. Romans 10, 9 says,

  331. If we confess with your mouth

  332. and believe in your heart

  333. that God raised him from the dead,

  334. you will be saved.

  335. It's having a confident trust in the Lord.

  336. It's having a firm, life-changing conviction in Christ.

  337. It is enough to surrender our lives.

  338. It's enough to surrender our plans.

  339. It's enough to surrender our ambitions,

  340. to give him over control of our life.

  341. And when we do that,

  342. we do that with everything that we are.

  343. We are saved for all of eternity.

  344. More Oklahoma may be the deadliest place on the planet,

  345. at least for tornadoes.

  346. In 1999, an EF-5,

  347. very rare to have an EF-5,

  348. but an EF-5 tornado

  349. with top speeds of 301 mile per hour,

  350. the highest wind speeds ever measured on Earth,

  351. came right through the center of Moore, Oklahoma.

  352. It stayed on the ground for 85 minutes.

  353. It went for 38 miles.

  354. It killed 36 people.

  355. And it was the first tornado to ever cause

  356. over a billion dollars worth of damage.

  357. In 2013, practically the same path was taken

  358. by another EF-5

  359. with 210 mile per hour speeds

  360. that killed 24 people and injured 377.

  361. It wiped Moore, Oklahoma off the map twice.

  362. It got hit again in 2015 by an EF-2.

  363. And I guess they just thought it was a strong breeze

  364. compared to what they had faced before.

  365. But in 1999, it was devastating.

  366. And the storm went right by First Baptist Moore, Oklahoma.

  367. That is a beautiful facility

  368. with instead of a steeple,

  369. they have a large cross projecting

  370. where the steeple normally would be.

  371. That facility was practically left untouched.

  372. And its central location

  373. caused it to become a relief and a care center.

  374. And in an effort to get the word out,

  375. people got in the back of trucks with bullhorns

  376. and rode through Moore, Oklahoma,

  377. saying,

  378. whatever you need,

  379. go to the cross.

  380. However you're hurting,

  381. go to the cross.

  382. Whatever you need help with,

  383. go to the cross.

  384. If you need any supplies,

  385. you go to the cross.

  386. If you need anybody to take care of you,

  387. you go to the cross.

  388. Whatever you need, Moore, Oklahoma,

  389. go to the cross.

  390. Go to the cross.

  391. Go to the cross.

  392. Help is waiting for you.

  393. My friend,

  394. help is waiting for you.

  395. Go to the cross.

  396. God will save you

  397. if you only believe.

  398. Look to the Lord.

  399. Believe.

  400. And lastly, be saved.

  401. There's a choice to make.

  402. God initiates

  403. within us

  404. a desire to come to him

  405. and we respond to that.

  406. He gives us the ability to believe

  407. and we just have to give up

  408. and we just have to give in.

  409. And that's not offered to just some.

  410. It's offered to all.

  411. Romans 10, 13 says,

  412. everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord

  413. shall be saved.

  414. It is a promise

  415. that is as real and lasting

  416. as the shed blood of Christ on Calvary

  417. for your sins.

  418. God knows us like no one else does.

  419. God loves us like no one else has.

  420. And God wants to save us

  421. like nothing else you will ever experience.

  422. Years ago,

  423. there was another school tragedy.

  424. This one

  425. was in Florida.

  426. And my oldest daughter, Abby,

  427. was in a government class

  428. in high school

  429. and they were talking about guns

  430. and they were talking about prevention

  431. and they were talking about school policies

  432. and they were discussing

  433. what was happening

  434. with this tragedy.

  435. And she had seen an interview

  436. in that class

  437. with a father of a child

  438. that had been killed.

  439. And he had talked about

  440. how things could be done differently

  441. if people would work together.

  442. And I agree with a lot of what he said.

  443. But part of what he said

  444. was haunting to me.

  445. He said this,

  446. I didn't think it was going to happen to me.

  447. I knew that

  448. if I knew that,

  449. I would have been at school every day

  450. if I'd have known how dangerous it was.

  451. Work with the president.

  452. Work to fix schools.

  453. That's it.

  454. No other discussion.

  455. No more discussions.

  456. I will never

  457. see my kid again.

  458. Never ever

  459. will I see my kid.

  460. I want you to

  461. let that sink in.

  462. Eternity.

  463. My daughter.

  464. I'll never see her again.

  465. And it's simple.

  466. We can fix it.

  467. That man had a lot of good points.

  468. But what kept ringing in my head

  469. was something different.

  470. And before the preacher daddy in me

  471. could say it to my daughter,

  472. Abby looked at me and said,

  473. Daddy,

  474. he's lost.

  475. He's lost.

  476. Now either his daughter

  477. never believed in the Lord Jesus Christ

  478. or either she did

  479. and he don't know it

  480. or either he didn't understand it

  481. or either he was just lost

  482. without Christ

  483. but he said there was no hope

  484. of an eternal reunion.

  485. No hope

  486. of eternity.

  487. I can't imagine

  488. what that man

  489. was going through.

  490. I can't think about it.

  491. It has to be

  492. the most horrid thing

  493. that anybody could ever

  494. go through in this life.

  495. However,

  496. if you don't believe

  497. in the Lord

  498. and if you don't

  499. surrender your life

  500. to him

  501. and you don't get saved,

  502. you'll go through

  503. the most horrid thing

  504. that anyone could ever

  505. go through

  506. for all of eternity.

  507. You'll die

  508. without Christ

  509. when in reality

  510. he died

  511. for one reason

  512. so that you don't have to die

  513. without him.

  514. Billy Sunday

  515. was a great preacher.

  516. He's a character.

  517. He's a baseball player

  518. that turned preacher.

  519. Man,

  520. he's a character.

  521. He was like a Billy Graham

  522. of the day.

  523. Billy Graham

  524. made such a difference

  525. in the second half

  526. of the 20th century

  527. and Billy Sunday

  528. made such a difference

  529. in the first half

  530. of the 20th century.

  531. But there was a difference

  532. in the way

  533. they presented themselves.

  534. Billy Sunday

  535. was a wild man

  536. in the pulpit.

  537. He was a fire-breathing preacher.

  538. He preached hard messages

  539. on sin.

  540. And one time

  541. after a sermon

  542. somebody said

  543. to Billy Sunday,

  544. he said,

  545. Billy,

  546. you better tone it down

  547. a little bit.

  548. And Billy said,

  549. why?

  550. And he said,

  551. well,

  552. Billy,

  553. you're rubbing the fur

  554. on the cat

  555. the wrong way.

  556. And Billy Sunday said,

  557. that old cat

  558. is headed to hell.

  559. And if that cat

  560. will turn around,

  561. I'll rub her

  562. the right way

  563. and she can go to heaven.

  564. And my friend,

  565. I want you to understand

  566. something this morning.

  567. I don't talk about

  568. the reality of hell

  569. with glee.

  570. I don't celebrate

  571. the fact

  572. that the majority

  573. of the people

  574. in the world

  575. in which we live

  576. will probably die

  577. and go to hell

  578. without Christ.

  579. I don't relish in that.

  580. I don't celebrate that.

  581. I try my best

  582. to get the warning out

  583. that anybody

  584. and everybody

  585. that I come in contact

  586. with at all possible

  587. can know

  588. you don't have to

  589. let your sin

  590. separate you

  591. from Christ.

  592. He died in your place

  593. to change your life.

  594. And all you must do

  595. is give him

  596. everything you've got.

  597. Just all of you.

  598. Look to Jesus.

  599. Believe in your heart

  600. that he'll forgive you

  601. of your sins

  602. and he'll come

  603. into your life

  604. and he'll save you.

  605. And as you begin

  606. to feel him

  607. draw you to himself

  608. respond

  609. and get saved

  610. and let him

  611. change your life.

  612. You'll never be the same.

  613. the Holy Spirit

  614. of God

  615. will empower you

  616. to rise above

  617. those circumstances

  618. that may hold you back

  619. from making a decision

  620. for the Lord now.

  621. Don't let anything

  622. hold you back.

  623. You just trust Christ.

  624. He'll make all the difference

  625. in the world.

  626. There's a lot of people

  627. in here today

  628. and you know that

  629. and you've accepted

  630. the Lord Jesus

  631. as your personal Lord

  632. and Savior

  633. and you're secure in that.

  634. Maybe you've never

  635. acknowledged that publicly

  636. in the way that

  637. Jesus commissioned us

  638. to do it

  639. and even did it

  640. by example

  641. through baptism.

  642. And if you've done

  643. that privately

  644. but you've never

  645. acknowledged that publicly

  646. I encourage you to come.

  647. I'd love to guide you

  648. in that.

  649. Maybe God's guiding you

  650. to First Baptist Church

  651. and you feel like

  652. the Lord's leading you

  653. to do this

  654. and your next commitment

  655. of obedience

  656. to follow Christ

  657. is to join the church

  658. and be a part of that.

  659. I'd love to guide you

  660. through that as well.

  661. But the reality is

  662. if you're here this morning

  663. and you know the Lord Jesus

  664. and you're an open

  665. confessing Christian

  666. I want you to know

  667. that God has planted

  668. people all around you

  669. that desperately need

  670. the Lord Jesus.

  671. And when you leave here today

  672. don't feel like

  673. because I got my salvation

  674. everything's done.

  675. No it ain't.

  676. God's put many people

  677. around you every day

  678. in the different walks

  679. of life that we live

  680. in the different places

  681. that we go

  682. in the different conversations

  683. that we have.

  684. People who desperately

  685. desperately

  686. need the Lord Jesus.

  687. And the way it works is

  688. as God lays those people

  689. upon your heart

  690. God works in their lives

  691. as well.

  692. There's a divine appointment

  693. that takes place

  694. that we can't even see

  695. even half of it

  696. taking place.

  697. But God allows us

  698. to be used

  699. to see people's lives

  700. changed.

  701. But if we're not

  702. sensitive to that

  703. if we're not open

  704. to that

  705. we'll miss that opportunity.

  706. So I ask you today

  707. Christian before you

  708. leave here

  709. will you say

  710. dear God

  711. will you put somebody

  712. in my path

  713. this week

  714. for me to share

  715. the gospel with.

  716. For me to just ask

  717. have you ever

  718. given your life

  719. to Christ?

  720. And if you have

  721. I'd love to hear

  722. your story.

  723. Listen if there's

  724. a Christian

  725. that gets offended

  726. by that

  727. they're not a real

  728. Christian.

  729. If you can ask

  730. somebody

  731. have you ever

  732. given your heart

  733. and life to Christ?

  734. I mean you can tell

  735. them look

  736. I mean it seems

  737. like you have

  738. but will you

  739. tell me about

  740. that experience

  741. and let them

  742. share their

  743. testimony with you

  744. and then share

  745. your testimony

  746. with them?

  747. They may not

  748. have a testimony

  749. and by you

  750. sharing yours

  751. you can make

  752. a difference

  753. in their life.

  754. God's just using

  755. you.

  756. You're not doing

  757. the salvation.

  758. You know what

  759. you're doing?

  760. You're just

  761. scattering seed.

  762. You're not

  763. responsible for

  764. whether it takes

  765. root.

  766. You're not

  767. responsible

  768. whether it's

  769. fruitful.

  770. You're responsible

  771. for scattering

  772. the seed.

  773. You don't have

  774. to be eloquent

  775. about it.

  776. You're just a

  777. beggar telling

  778. another beggar

  779. how to find

  780. bread.

  781. My friend

  782. I encourage

  783. you if you've

  784. got salvation

  785. in the Lord

  786. Jesus give

  787. it away.

  788. Give it

  789. away.

  790. It'll just be

  791. better in your

  792. life.

  793. Heavenly Father

  794. I love you.
