  1. Luke chapter 23, Easter is just two weeks away and I always love Easter.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  2. It's the day that we focus on the Christian celebration on the empty tomb.

  3. ! It's especially a great day in the life of Pickens First Baptist Church.

  4. It's going to be a great day and I encourage you to pray.

  5. And I encourage you to invite folks.

  6. And I encourage you to expect God to do great things.

  7. In our midst, I see over and over again in Scripture a correlation when people come in faith expecting God to move in a mighty way.

  8. He does it.

  9. We just looked last week, week four, when four friends picked up a paralytic and took him to see Jesus.

  10. They had expectations that Jesus would change the man's life.

  11. And it says that he healed them because he saw their faith.

  12. And so I'm telling you, I believe we need to pray and ask God to do mighty things beyond our expectations and then expect great things.

  13. And just watch and see what happens.

  14. It's going to be a great day.

  15. Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

  16. And we need to grasp that.

  17. And we need to live in response to that.

  18. And that needs to affect us each and every day.

  19. And Easter, or really the resurrection celebration, helps us to do that.

  20. However, I really believe that in order to understand the victory of the empty tomb, you need to understand the cross of Christ.

  21. You need to understand what Jesus endured and why he endured it for us to be able to have new life in Christ.

  22. I want us to look this morning briefly at a man who is mentioned in three of the gospels, yet is seldom talked about.

  23. He's found in Luke chapter 23, beginning in verse 26.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  24. And it says this,

  25. As they led him away, speaking of Jesus, leading him away,

  26. they seized one Simon of Cyrene who was coming in from the country and laid on him the cross to carry it behind Jesus.

  27. And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him.

  28. When one was to be crucified, part of the agony in the Roman process was having to carry his own cross.

  29. We're not absolutely sure, but most likely what Jesus carried and then Simon carried was the horizontal crossbar of the cross.

  30. As often depicted, the whole cross is often depicted, but in reality, usually it was the horizontal bar that was strapped to their arms and shoulders.

  31. The patibulum is the horizontal crossbar of the cross.

  32. It weighed about 75 to 125 pounds.

  33. Now, Jesus was a carpenter by trade.

  34. He was about 33 years, which is not far from prime.

  35. Physical prime, I guess.

  36. He could have normally handled that, I believe, without a real problem.

  37. However, we must realize what he had been through.

  38. John chapter 19, verse 1 tells us that he was flogged.

    John 19:1

  39. Flogging was not intended for execution.

  40. It was sometimes used instead of execution.

  41. Pilate attempted to have Jesus released after he was scourged or flogged.

  42. The purpose of a flogging was not to kill a man, but to brutally, painfully humiliate the man forever, for the rest of his life anyway.

  43. From the marks that would be upon his body and from the limp that he may walk with.

  44. The purpose was to be demeaning and to be belittling of someone who messed with the Roman government.

  45. Now, it was such a degree that Roman citizens were not to be flogged, which made for some interesting conversation when Paul was being persecuted later.

  46. But when they would flog a man, they would use a flagellum.

  47. A flagellum was a, the British call it a cat of nine tails.

  48. It was a whip that had several strands on it, usually up to nine strands.

  49. And each one of those strands tied into that leather would either be lead balls or glass or pieces of bone.

  50. And the thought was that if you whip someone on the back, those strands were made to dig in to the flesh.

  51. And so once it dug in, they'd rip it.

  52. And the hope was that it would cut the skin as it was brought down with the proper force.

  53. One historian that lived in the first century stated that people were amazed to see the depths of the wounds that such a flogging would cause.

  54. The lacerations were, and I quote,

  55. End of quote.

  56. They'd bind a man to a post or they'd stretch him out over a frame.

  57. And they'd beat him from his neck to his knees and mark him as best they could.

  58. Now I want to make one clarification that a lot of preachers have messed up on, including this one.

  59. That I've often been told that they were limited to 40 lashes when they hit a man.

  60. And the reality is that's a Jewish limitation.

  61. And it's found in Deuteronomy chapter 25 verse 3.

    Deuteronomy 25:3

  62. And the reason why they limited those lashes was because the flogging was not intended to kill somebody.

  63. It was intended to make them wish they was dead.

  64. And they had watched to see how many it would take to kill a man, and they didn't want to do that.

  65. So they limited it to 40, and I was always told that you got your best counter, buddy, and hopefully a good friend, to stand there with you and count and tell you when you got to 39 and stop.

  66. Because if you went over, you got the same treatment.

  67. But the reality is that was a Jewish law.

  68. Romans didn't care about Jewish laws.

  69. Romans would beat somebody as long as they wanted to.

  70. Because they had come against the Roman government.

  71. It's understandable why Jesus could not carry a 100-pound railroad tie, the equivalent to, on his shoulders for very long.

  72. And when he could no longer, a man named Simon was shocked to be a part of the execution parade of Jesus.

  73. He was from Cyrene in North Africa.

  74. Today that would be part of Libya.

  75. And all the Synoptic Gospels, that's Matthew, Mark, and Luke, mention this man.

  76. And the question I want to answer this morning is why?

  77. Why did they bring him up again and again?

  78. I'll tell you why.

  79. Because the cross changed Simon's life.

  80. Simon was apparently a Jew from Cyrene.

  81. And there was a large group of Jews in a synagogue at the time in that area.

  82. They're mentioned a few times in the book of Acts.

  83. And Mark, who wrote primarily aimed at believers in Rome,

  84. mentioned that Simon, in Mark 15, verse 21,

    Mark 15:21

  85. is the father of Alexander and Rufus.

  86. The gospel of Mark was written 40 years after the death of Christ, or at least 30.

  87. Why would he include the name of Simon's son?

  88. I'll tell you why.

  89. Because the church, the first audience that Mark wrote to,

  90. knew who they were.

  91. In Romans chapter 16, verse 13, Paul writes about Rufus.

    Romans 16:13

  92. And he writes about Rufus' mother.

  93. And he says that Rufus' mother was like a mother to him.

  94. To me, it sounds like the whole house got saved.

  95. He was leading his family to Jerusalem for the Passover.

  96. But when he came, he met Jesus.

  97. And Jesus changes everything.

  98. Christ changed his life that day and changed his household forever.

  99. And I believe he's mentioned because of the difference that the event made on his life

  100. and the difference that his life made on the kingdom.

  101. But I also believe it's mentioned because of the difference it can make in us.

  102. Because the cross will change our lives as well.

  103. I believe what we see here is a physical example of a spiritual truth

  104. that should mark every one of our lives.

  105. Simon was willing to bear the weight of the cross of Christ.

  106. And if you stand up today for Christ in the world in which we live,

  107. you may be criticized.

  108. If you stand up for the cause of Christ in the world in which we live,

  109. you may be misunderstood.

  110. You at least at times will be unappreciated for taking such a stand.

  111. And if you're not willing to feel the weight of the cross,

  112. if you're not willing to live a life of sacrifice for God,

  113. if we're not willing to deny ourselves and follow him,

  114. then in reality we're not truly following God.

  115. Simon was willing to do that.

  116. And it forever changed his life.

  117. His example is one that rattles personal cages.

  118. At the turn of the 19th century,

  119. in the Church of England,

  120. there was a pastor named Charles Simeon.

  121. In the midst of that,

  122. there was a great church renewal going on in that denomination.

  123. And amid criticism,

  124. he preached the word without reservation.

  125. Early in his ministry,

  126. this passage that we study today changed his life.

  127. And he wrote about it and he said this.

  128. He said,

  129. One day when I was an object of much contempt and derision in the university,

  130. I strolled forth,

  131. buffeted and afflicted,

  132. taking my little Greek New Testament in my hand.

  133. I prayed that God would comfort me with some cordial from his word.

  134. And opening it,

  135. the first text which caught my eye was this.

  136. They found a man of Cyrene,

  137. Simon by name.

  138. They compelled him to bear his cross.

  139. Simon,

  140. you know,

  141. is the same name as Simeon.

  142. It was the very word that I needed.

  143. What a privilege

  144. to have the cross

  145. laid on me

  146. to bear it with Jesus.

  147. It was enough.

  148. I could leap.

  149. I could sing for joy.

  150. Lay it on me,

  151. Lord,

  152. I cried.

  153. And henceforth,

  154. I bound persecution

  155. as a wreath of glory

  156. round my brow.

  157. End of quote.

  158. And you can tell when I'm talking

  159. and when he's talking.

  160. I'll probably don't have to tell you

  161. when I end the quote.

  162. It's a burden

  163. of every Christian

  164. to take up the cross

  165. and follow Christ.

  166. Christ said in Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9:23

  167. verse 23,

  168. If anyone would come after me,

  169. let him deny himself

  170. and take up his cross daily

  171. and follow me.

  172. What does that mean?

  173. Well,

  174. the first thing that means

  175. is to say no.

  176. Just because we want to do it

  177. does not mean

  178. that we need to do it.

  179. Just because we want to say it

  180. don't mean that we need to say it.

  181. Just because we think on it

  182. don't mean we need to be thinking on it.

  183. Just because we want to do something,

  184. say something,

  185. think on something

  186. does not mean we need to do it.

  187. We are people who are born in sin.

  188. Because of that,

  189. we are prone to sin.

  190. Not only that,

  191. but we've committed sin.

  192. As a matter of fact,

  193. we kind of lean into sin.

  194. We don't stand upright many times.

  195. And one of our greatest enemies sometimes

  196. is the flesh that is within us.

  197. That leads us in ways

  198. that we don't need to go.

  199. And we need to say no.

  200. No to ourselves.

  201. Not only to our comforts,

  202. not only to our cares,

  203. we need to say no

  204. to the carnal nature

  205. that rises up within us

  206. and leads us to say things

  207. that are not pleasing to the Lord.

  208. And leads us to do things

  209. that are not pleasing to the Lord.

  210. And it leads us to thank things

  211. that are not pleasing to the Lord.

  212. And that set us back.

  213. All of those things set us back.

  214. And it's hard to hear no.

  215. There was a drug prevention campaign

  216. when I was a kid.

  217. Nancy Reagan was the first lady

  218. and in a fight against drugs,

  219. they came up with the Just Say No campaign.

  220. Just say no to drugs.

  221. When you was watching television,

  222. commercial would come on

  223. that you couldn't fast forward through.

  224. You had to endure.

  225. They'd crack an egg,

  226. throw it in a frying pan,

  227. and say,

  228. this is your brain.

  229. This is your brain on drugs.

  230. And anybody that's about my age

  231. was marked by the fact

  232. that if you take drugs,

  233. you'll turn into a fried egg.

  234. Okay.

  235. About that time,

  236. new song,

  237. Christian group,

  238. came out with a song called

  239. Say Yes to Jesus.

  240. And the lyric said,

  241. how can you say no

  242. until you say yes?

  243. Say yes to Jesus.

  244. My friend,

  245. we can't say yes to Jesus

  246. until we say no to ourselves.

  247. We've got to deny ourselves.

  248. The second thing we have to do

  249. is take up his cause.

  250. He said take up his cross daily.

  251. The Roman cross was a symbol of shame

  252. and guilt and suffering and rejection.

  253. It's a horrible way to die.

  254. People didn't wear gold crosses

  255. on their necklines in those days.

  256. That would have been like somebody

  257. wearing an electric chair

  258. around their neck now.

  259. I mean,

  260. you just wouldn't do it.

  261. It'd be odd.

  262. It'd be strange.

  263. When it says take up his cross daily,

  264. it speaks of living boldly

  265. in our Christian faith,

  266. not living like the world,

  267. being surrendered to Christ.

  268. It means willing to suffer ridicule

  269. when it comes.

  270. It means willing to suffer

  271. a lack of popularity.

  272. It means willing to sacrifice

  273. your wants for his.

  274. You know what that means?

  275. That means you may not be invited

  276. to the same functions as you have been.

  277. And if you are,

  278. when you're living for Christ,

  279. you may not feel as comfortable

  280. in those functions as you have been.

  281. You may have to walk away at times.

  282. You may have to speak up at times.

  283. You may have to stand strong at times.

  284. It's the Romans 12,

  285. one and two lifestyle.

  286. The Apostle Paul said in Romans 12,

  287. verse one,

  288. I appeal to you,

  289. therefore brothers,

  290. by the mercies of God.

  291. And let me just stop there.

  292. Because the things that I'm talking about,

  293. we are unable to do

  294. in our own ability.

  295. And you may think,

  296. I'm preaching,

  297. some of that stuff you're saying,

  298. I can't do.

  299. I know, I know,

  300. you're right,

  301. you can't do it.

  302. But I am thankful

  303. that when one surrenders

  304. his or her life

  305. to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  306. acknowledges the sin

  307. that they've committed in the past,

  308. ask Christ to forgive them

  309. of their sins,

  310. and commit their life

  311. to follow Christ,

  312. something transformational happens

  313. that it's hard for us to grasp.

  314. And that is the Holy Spirit of God

  315. comes to indwell within us.

  316. And when the Holy Spirit

  317. comes to indwell within us,

  318. he gives us the strength

  319. and the power

  320. and the correction

  321. and the direction

  322. that we need

  323. in order to live a life

  324. that's pleasing to the Lord.

  325. Now, I will tell you

  326. that our human nature,

  327. our flesh,

  328. our carnal,

  329. whatever you want to call it,

  330. the us in us

  331. fights against

  332. the Holy Spirit so often.

  333. And the reality is

  334. we do things,

  335. as Paul said,

  336. the things I want to do

  337. is not what I do

  338. and the things I don't want to do

  339. is what I do.

  340. Yes, that is the struggle

  341. that we face.

  342. But if you're not fighting

  343. that battle,

  344. it's because you're losing

  345. that battle.

  346. You're not paying attention

  347. to it.

  348. But in reality,

  349. if you're a child of God today,

  350. the Holy Spirit of God

  351. has come within you

  352. and empowered you

  353. to rise above the things

  354. that come in the way

  355. of you being everything

  356. that you can be

  357. for the Lord Jesus.

  358. And that only comes,

  359. thank God,

  360. by the mercies of God.

  361. That's the only hope

  362. we got is in his mercy.

  363. It's not in our ability.

  364. It wasn't that we woke up

  365. one day and realized,

  366. hey, I think I need

  367. something besides the Lord.

  368. I need something besides me.

  369. I need the Lord.

  370. No, no, I'm sorry.

  371. The Holy Spirit of God

  372. laid a conviction upon us

  373. of the need of God,

  374. made us aware

  375. of our need of God.

  376. And then we surrender

  377. our lives to follow God.

  378. And when we do that,

  379. by the mercies of God,

  380. the same mercy

  381. that sent Christ to the cross

  382. is the same mercy

  383. that empowers us

  384. with the Spirit of God.

  385. So I want to be clear

  386. this morning

  387. that what I'm about to say,

  388. we're not able to do

  389. on our own.

  390. But if you're a child

  391. of God today,

  392. and if you're not,

  393. you can be.

  394. Because today's

  395. the day of salvation.

  396. And he'll meet you

  397. where you are.

  398. And he'll change your life

  399. when you surrender to him.

  400. If you have done that,

  401. I want you to know

  402. by the mercies of God,

  403. we can present our bodies

  404. as a living sacrifice.

  405. Holy and acceptable to God.

  406. That is true worship.

  407. That's true worship.

  408. I love corporate worship.

  409. You know what makes it better?

  410. When we've done

  411. what we need to do

  412. to have spiritual worship.

  413. When we've surrendered

  414. to the Lord,

  415. and when we're following

  416. the Lord,

  417. being led by the Spirit of God,

  418. worship is that much better

  419. in the midst of it.

  420. And because of what

  421. he does for us,

  422. I want you to notice

  423. what verse 2 says.

  424. It says,

  425. Do not be conformed

  426. to this world,

  427. but be transformed

  428. by the renewal

  429. of your mind,

  430. that by testing

  431. you may discern

  432. what is the will of God.

  433. People ask me all the time,

  434. how in the world

  435. do I know

  436. what the will of God is?

  437. I'll tell you how you know.

  438. Don't conform to this world.

  439. Be transformed

  440. by the renewal

  441. of your mind.

  442. Take in the word of God.

  443. Seek the Lord in prayer.

  444. Be faithful to follow him.

  445. Be faithful in worship.

  446. Be faithful to do

  447. exactly what he tells you to do.

  448. Don't second guess

  449. the Holy Spirit of God.

  450. Just follow his will

  451. and his way.

  452. And what he'll show you

  453. is the will of God

  454. for your life,

  455. what's good

  456. and what's acceptable

  457. and what's perfect.

  458. Few, if any of us,

  459. will ever be asked

  460. to die for the cross

  461. cause of Christ.

  462. But all of us

  463. who are Christians

  464. are commanded

  465. to live for him.

  466. The preacher didn't say that.

  467. The Lord said that.

  468. We're to take up

  469. our cross daily.

  470. And the last thing

  471. is to follow Christ.

  472. At the very beginning

  473. of the Gospels,

  474. we see men walk away

  475. from everything they knew

  476. to follow the Lord.

  477. James and John

  478. walked away

  479. from a business

  480. they would have inherited.

  481. Peter walked away

  482. from his livelihood.

  483. Matthew was a Roman

  484. commissioned tax collector

  485. that left his booth

  486. to follow Christ.

  487. And scripture gives us

  488. no indication

  489. that Jesus ever stopped

  490. and pleaded

  491. for any of these men

  492. to come after him.

  493. It don't say anything

  494. about him coming back

  495. the second time.

  496. It don't say anything

  497. about him coming back

  498. the third time.

  499. It don't say anything

  500. about that.

  501. As a matter of fact,

  502. I happen to believe

  503. that Jesus never lost

  504. his stride.

  505. He just said,

  506. follow me.

  507. And Matthew looked

  508. at all his tax stuff

  509. and went,

  510. hey,

  511. I'm going to do that.

  512. And closed the books

  513. and left the booth.

  514. They all left

  515. what they were doing.

  516. They left what they were up to.

  517. They left what their plans were

  518. to follow what Christ had

  519. for them.

  520. And scripture says

  521. again and again,

  522. Mark especially,

  523. that they left immediately

  524. to do that.

  525. You know,

  526. sometimes,

  527. I'll just say it

  528. all the time,

  529. delayed obedience

  530. is disobedience.

  531. When God speaks,

  532. you answer.

  533. Now let's get back

  534. to the text.

  535. Because Simon

  536. picked up the burden

  537. of Christ.

  538. And then I want you

  539. to notice what it says.

  540. It says that he carried

  541. the cross

  542. behind Christ.

  543. From the time

  544. he picked up the cross,

  545. he was following Jesus.

  546. That's exactly

  547. what we're to do as well.

  548. Christ

  549. denied himself.

  550. He took up his cross

  551. and he followed

  552. the plan of God

  553. so that

  554. we could deny ourselves,

  555. take up our cross

  556. for his causes

  557. and follow him.

  558. I believe our job

  559. as we approach

  560. the celebration

  561. of the resurrection

  562. of the Lord

  563. is to take up

  564. the matters of God,

  565. to bear his cross

  566. and to follow Christ

  567. in all that we do.

  568. With every head bowed

  569. and every eye closed,

  570. I want to ask you

  571. something this morning.

  572. I want to ask you

  573. if you've ever

  574. come to know

  575. the Lord Jesus

  576. as your personal

  577. Lord and Savior.

  578. have you ever

  579. surrendered your life

  580. to him?

  581. As I mentioned earlier

  582. to ask him

  583. to forgive you

  584. and to come into your life

  585. and to change you

  586. and then to surrender

  587. your will

  588. to his will.

  589. It's a personal thing.

  590. It does not come

  591. through a transaction

  592. of a church membership.

  593. It does not come

  594. through some physical process.

  595. It comes instead

  596. by a personal surrender

  597. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  598. And anything that takes place

  599. beyond that

  600. spiritually

  601. is no good

  602. because it's missing

  603. the key thing

  604. and that is

  605. the personal surrender

  606. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  607. If you've never done that,

  608. I want to encourage you

  609. as soon as we stand

  610. to sing,

  611. you come and say,

  612. Pastor,

  613. I need to give my life

  614. to Christ.

  615. I need to nail down

  616. my salvation.

  617. Pastor,

  618. I'm not sure.

  619. Whatever your circumstances,

  620. you share that.

  621. Maybe you have done that,

  622. but you've never

  623. followed that up

  624. publicly with baptism.

  625. The reality is

  626. by the commission of Christ

  627. and by his example,

  628. he shows us

  629. that the first step

  630. of obedience

  631. in our salvation

  632. is to follow that up

  633. with baptism.

  634. Baptism is a way

  635. for us to honor the Lord

  636. by obeying him,

  637. but it's also

  638. a wonderful testimony

  639. that I see every time

  640. impact lives

  641. of those around them

  642. much more than

  643. they ever know.

  644. And I really don't believe

  645. we will see this side

  646. of eternity,

  647. the whole extent of that.

  648. Maybe you're here

  649. this morning

  650. and God's leading you

  651. to Pickens First Baptist Church.

  652. You feel like

  653. this is the place

  654. where you are to serve.

  655. This is the place

  656. where you are to join.

  657. You invest in us,

  658. we invest in you,

  659. we grow together

  660. for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  661. And if you sense that,

  662. feel that,

  663. by the Holy Spirit of God,

  664. I encourage you to come.

  665. I'd love to guide you

  666. in what that means.

  667. For the rest of us,

  668. maybe we just,

  669. maybe we just need

  670. to deny ourselves.

  671. Maybe this morning

  672. we just need to

  673. take up our cross

  674. and to follow Christ.

  675. If there's an area

  676. of your life

  677. that's suffering

  678. because you failed

  679. to do that,

  680. why don't you lay that

  681. before the Lord today?

  682. You can do that

  683. where you'll stand

  684. in just a moment.

  685. You can do that

  686. at this altar.

  687. I'll be happy

  688. to pray for you.

  689. Whatever God

  690. would have you to do,

  691. I just want you

  692. to do exactly

  693. what He tells you to do.

  694. Nothing more

  695. or nothing less.

  696. I don't have a clue

  697. what God's telling you.

  698. I just know

  699. what He wanted me to share.

  700. And so I encourage

  701. you to be obedient

  702. and follow Him

  703. as He speaks

  704. to your heart.

  705. Lord Jesus,

  706. lead us right now.

  707. Help us to simply

  708. follow you

  709. and guide our every step.

  710. Give us a boldness

  711. beyond measure.

  712. Lord,

  713. give us a strength

  714. that we don't have

  715. for our own.

  716. Give us a willingness

  717. to obey

  718. as only comes

  719. from the Holy Spirit

  720. of God.

  721. In Jesus' precious name,

  722. Amen.
