  1. Luke chapter 23, Jerry Seagull and Joe Shoster met in high school.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  2. ! They began creating a science fiction character and drawing him into comic strips and hoping to get them in papers.

  3. ! And then in 1938, after five years of working on the idea, with little success in publishing it,

  4. they sold all the rights to their work for $130.

  5. Now that's almost $2,900 in today's dollars.

  6. Their character was Superman.

  7. A forerunner of DC Comics bought it and the rest is history.

  8. The Superman franchise has made $27 billion worldwide.

  9. And the first comic book that was sold last year, the first Superman comic book was sold last year for $6 million.

  10. After being sold three years earlier for $2.5 million.

  11. If you are a Seagull or a Shoster in this place, I am sorry to tell you about the fortune that you missed out on.

  12. The men missed an underestimated their potential and missed a golden opportunity.

  13. And I don't want you to miss your chance.

  14. I want to show you this morning about one man who just had a few minutes more to take advantage of the greatest opportunity that he possibly could.

  15. And he didn't miss it.

  16. And it made an eternal difference.

  17. Luke chapter 23 tells us that Pilate delivered Jesus over to the will of the people.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  18. The mob mentality led to kill him.

  19. And they led him away to be crucified.

  20. And then Luke chapter 23 verse 32 says this.

    Luke 23:32

  21. Two others who were criminals were led away to be put to death with him.

  22. And when they came to the place that is called the skull, there they crucified him.

  23. And the criminals on his right and on his left.

  24. And Jesus said, Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.

  25. And they cast lots to divide his garments.

  26. And the people stood by watching.

  27. But the rulers scoffed at him saying, he saved others, let him save himself.

  28. If he is the Christ of God, his chosen one.

  29. The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, if you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.

  30. There was also an inscription over him, this is the king of the Jews.

  31. One of the criminals who were hanging rail at him and saying, are you not the Christ?

  32. Save yourself and us.

  33. But the other one rebuked him saying, do you not fear God?

  34. Since you are under the same sentence of condemnation and we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds.

  35. For this man has done nothing wrong.

  36. And he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

  37. And he said, Jesus said to him, truly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.

  38. In the very next verses, it speaks of Jesus' death.

  39. The Gospel of John tells us that the other men died shortly thereafter.

  40. They wanted to make sure that all three men were dead before the sun went down because that would start the Sabbath.

  41. And no one was to be hanging there when the Sabbath started.

  42. And so the soldiers would break legs to get them dead by dark before the Sabbath started.

  43. When they got to Jesus, he was already dead.

  44. And then they thrust a spear through his chest cavity and into his heart to make sure he was dead.

  45. And just like that, they were dead.

  46. Jesus did not deserve to go to the cross.

  47. In one way, it was not his cross to die on.

  48. It was intended for Barabbas, a notorious criminal who had stirred up an insurrection,

  49. who had robbed folks, possibly even killed folks.

  50. It is often thought that he was a gang leader, a gang leader with two sidekicks.

  51. The two sidekicks would be on the crosses beside Jesus,

  52. with the intent being that Barabbas' cross would be the center cross.

  53. Christ literally died on the cross intended for Barabbas after Pilate traded off Barabbas for Jesus.

  54. However, in an even greater way, it was the cross of Christ.

  55. Before the time existed, the cross of Christ was coming.

  56. It would have to, due to the sin of humans and the redeeming grace of God.

  57. He died so that we don't have to.

  58. He died in our place.

  59. He is the only one that could.

  60. He was virgin born of the Spirit of God,

  61. not born of the same sin state that we are in.

  62. He stayed sinless throughout his life.

  63. He is the only one that could perfectly fulfill the law.

  64. The only way that a sinful humanity had hoped to coming back to God

  65. was through a sacrificial atonement.

  66. Somebody had to bridge the gap, and only Christ could do it,

  67. and thank God that he did.

  68. While he died, most jeered.

  69. Some sneered.

  70. But at least one's life was changed.

  71. There's evidence that possibly more than that.

  72. But it was the dying thief hanging on the cross next to Christ that was changed.

  73. When one spoke harshly to him, another asked him for help.

  74. And when he did, help came.

  75. Jesus said, he said,

  76. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

  77. And God answered his prayer.

  78. Jesus answered it immediately.

  79. The thief on the cross died that day with the promise of two certainties.

  80. And I want you to know something this morning.

  81. Those two certainties are open to all of us as well.

  82. There are two realities that can be absolute certainties for us.

  83. The first one is the certainty of salvation.

  84. There's no need for you today to be uncertain about salvation in Christ.

  85. I want you to be clear.

  86. Our lives can be changed.

  87. How does that happen?

  88. Well, it's a three-step process.

  89. One, it's by our confession, the confession of our need.

  90. This repentant thief knew his sin was leading to death.

  91. He told the other criminal while he was on the cross,

  92. we deserve what we're getting, but not him.

  93. In a day when people want to excuse away their sin,

  94. when people want to ignore their sin,

  95. when people want to justify their sin,

  96. we need to understand that your sin,

  97. that my sin, that our wrongdoing will forever condemn us

  98. and separate us from God.

  99. We don't have to stay that way.

  100. If we refuse to admit that we have a problem,

  101. when God has shown us that we are separated from him

  102. and what has separated us from him,

  103. we will never receive help for our eternal problem.

  104. It begins with a confession.

  105. You got to confess that you've got a need.

  106. It continues by our change in our heart and life.

  107. One must turn from his or her sin to be saved.

  108. And whereas one criminal ridiculed Christ,

  109. the other repentant one said to Christ, please.

  110. And salvation came when he acknowledged Christ for who he is.

  111. The third process of that is by calling upon him for salvation.

  112. And he saw the innocence of Christ.

  113. He saw the lordship of Christ.

  114. Christ, I want you to hear me this morning.

  115. If that old boy would have known in his heart

  116. but never acknowledged with his life,

  117. he would have spent eternity in hell.

  118. Knowing's not enough.

  119. But thank God he didn't do that.

  120. He acknowledged the state of his circumstances

  121. and he called upon the Lord.

  122. If you have a familiarity with Christ today,

  123. but you've never truly submitted your life to Christ,

  124. Christ, I want you to know that familiarity is not enough.

  125. An old preacher was talking to a lady one time

  126. that knew little about salvation.

  127. And he asked her,

  128. do you know that God has set a definite date for your salvation?

  129. And she looked surprised at him and said,

  130. no, I didn't know that.

  131. Well, he has.

  132. And he asked her, he said,

  133. if I show you that he has,

  134. will you keep that engagement with him?

  135. She looked at him seriously and said,

  136. yes, I would.

  137. He said, all right, then here it is.

  138. Behold, now is the favorable time.

  139. Behold, now is the day of salvation.

  140. My friend, the promise of salvation is that

  141. when you turn to him,

  142. you will be with him both here and forever.

  143. And the difference in the saved and the unsaved

  144. and the difference in the forgiven and the unforgiven

  145. is that the unbeliever

  146. and the believer and the unbeliever

  147. is that the believer

  148. has received the forgiveness

  149. and the grace and the mercy of God

  150. by their personal surrender.

  151. And my friend,

  152. that's the only hope that we have.

  153. Once we have that through Christ,

  154. we ought to be different.

  155. We ought to be changed.

  156. And there's times when we don't look that much different.

  157. The apostle Paul said,

  158. the things I want to do

  159. is the things sometimes I don't do.

  160. And the things that I wish I didn't do

  161. are the very things that I do.

  162. Sometimes there's a struggle in that.

  163. But the reality is the power of the Holy Spirit

  164. of God within us

  165. teaches us to lean upon God daily

  166. as he leads us.

  167. And we get better at that with time.

  168. We ought to if it's real.

  169. Each day that we live,

  170. we ought to get better at it.

  171. So come to Christ.

  172. Drop what you're doing and come.

  173. Confess your sin.

  174. Turn to him.

  175. Call upon him.

  176. That is exactly how

  177. the thief in his final moments

  178. was saved.

  179. And that's how any of us are saved.

  180. That is our hope.

  181. It is the certainty of salvation.

  182. But there's another certainty here

  183. and that's the certainty of heaven.

  184. Jesus said,

  185. today you will be with me in paradise.

  186. In other words,

  187. life continues.

  188. My friend,

  189. this is not all there is.

  190. 1 Corinthians 15, 9 says,

  191. if in Christ we have hope in this life only,

  192. we are of all pity,

  193. of all people,

  194. most to be pitied.

  195. This is not all there is.

  196. Leave this life without Christ

  197. and you'll have hell to pay.

  198. You leave it knowing Christ

  199. and you'll be changed forever.

  200. All of that,

  201. we don't quite understand.

  202. It's a little bit beyond us.

  203. However,

  204. we can know the assurance of the change.

  205. 1 Corinthians 15 puts it this way

  206. in verse 50.

  207. He said,

  208. I tell you brothers,

  209. flesh and blood cannot inherit

  210. the kingdom of God,

  211. nor does the perishable

  212. inherit the imperishable.

  213. For this perishable body

  214. must put on the imperishable

  215. and this mortal body

  216. must put on immortality.

  217. When the perishable

  218. puts on the imperishable

  219. and the mortal puts on immortality,

  220. then death is swallowed up in victory.

  221. In other words,

  222. in Christ,

  223. death has lost its sting.

  224. Life in Christ

  225. is real.

  226. Life after death

  227. is as real

  228. as the empty tomb

  229. in Jerusalem

  230. where they laid the body of Jesus

  231. but it lays no longer.

  232. Thank God,

  233. it's empty.

  234. I've been there.

  235. He's gone

  236. and he lives.

  237. And that's why we celebrate today.

  238. We celebrate because he lives

  239. and because he lives,

  240. we too may live.

  241. The certainty of salvation

  242. means that life continues.

  243. It also means

  244. that we can be with him forever.

  245. Scripture promises us

  246. the unchallenged presence of God.

  247. The greatest news of this passage is

  248. today you shall be with me

  249. in paradise.

  250. People have wondered,

  251. theologians have struggled

  252. over what paradise means there.

  253. Where's paradise?

  254. Well,

  255. the word comes from a Greek

  256. transliteration of a Persian word

  257. that speaks of the king's garden.

  258. And the king's garden

  259. in that atmosphere

  260. is somewhere

  261. where nobody could go

  262. unless they were invited

  263. into this gated garden.

  264. That reminds me

  265. of the Garden of Eden

  266. before there was sin

  267. and they walked with God

  268. in the cool of the day.

  269. So where is this paradise

  270. and what is it?

  271. Well, let me tell you

  272. what really matters.

  273. Scripture says,

  274. today you will be with me

  275. in paradise.

  276. You see, I believe paradise

  277. is heaven under construction.

  278. And what I mean by that

  279. is not that they're up there

  280. building golden mansions.

  281. I'm not talking about

  282. building construction.

  283. No, heaven will not be complete

  284. until all God's family

  285. is there.

  286. Once you've lost loved ones here,

  287. there'll never be a time

  288. on this earth

  289. when all your family

  290. will be back together again

  291. unless they know Jesus

  292. and then you can be with them

  293. in glory

  294. if you

  295. are in Christ.

  296. Then we'll be together

  297. in the presence of God

  298. with no enemy chasing us down

  299. and no temptation

  300. whispering in our ear

  301. and no human frailty

  302. hampering our fellowship.

  303. We'll be there

  304. together

  305. in the unchallenged presence

  306. of God.

  307. What's heaven like?

  308. Scripture tells us

  309. a bunch about it

  310. but how do you

  311. explain

  312. an eternal place

  313. in temporal words?

  314. How do you describe

  315. the divine

  316. to the human?

  317. How do you describe

  318. the infinite

  319. to the finite?

  320. I'm convinced

  321. it's all watered down words

  322. to try to satisfy

  323. some of our questions.

  324. But in reality

  325. it's so beyond

  326. our concepts.

  327. I like what the old doctor

  328. said to his patient.

  329. It was in a day

  330. when doctors

  331. made house calls

  332. and he had made

  333. a house call

  334. and there was a man there

  335. who was very sick

  336. and he said

  337. Doc

  338. what's heaven

  339. going to be like?

  340. And the doctor's dog

  341. had followed him

  342. to the man's house.

  343. The dog was out

  344. on the porch

  345. and he was scratching

  346. on the door

  347. whimpering and whining

  348. to get in

  349. and the doctor said

  350. do you hear that?

  351. He said yeah.

  352. He said that's my dog.

  353. He's never been

  354. inside your house.

  355. He don't know

  356. what's inside your house.

  357. All he knows

  358. is that the master

  359. is there

  360. and if the master's there

  361. he wants to be there too.

  362. It must be

  363. okay.

  364. Paradise

  365. is where the Lord is.

  366. What else really matters?

  367. Knowing heaven

  368. is real

  369. means real life

  370. continues.

  371. We are with him

  372. and also

  373. and I want you

  374. to get this

  375. heaven

  376. is immediate.

  377. Jesus said

  378. today

  379. you shall be

  380. with me

  381. in paradise.

  382. When we've surrendered

  383. our lives

  384. to Christ

  385. and one day

  386. we close our eyes

  387. in death here

  388. we open them

  389. with Christ.

  390. It's

  391. instantaneous.

  392. 1 Corinthians 15

    1 Corinthians 15:52

  393. verse 52

  394. says in a moment

  395. in the twinkling

  396. of an eye

  397. we shall

  398. be

  399. changed.

  400. The apostle Paul

  401. tells us

  402. to be absent

  403. from the body

  404. is to be present

  405. with the Lord.

  406. No delay

  407. it's immediate.

  408. The thief died

  409. that day

  410. so did the Lord

  411. the thief

  412. was instantly

  413. in his presence

  414. just like he promised

  415. and that day

  416. is coming

  417. for all of us.

  418. So I ask you

  419. this morning

  420. on Easter Sunday

  421. morning

  422. in your Easter best

  423. let me ask you

  424. are you ready?

  425. Are you ready?

  426. He died for us.

  427. He met us

  428. where we are.

  429. He makes us

  430. aware of our need

  431. for him.

  432. Listen

  433. if there's

  434. anything

  435. in you

  436. that pulls

  437. toward wanting

  438. to know more

  439. of God

  440. of wanting

  441. to be in

  442. relationship

  443. with God

  444. I want you

  445. to know

  446. you didn't

  447. come up

  448. with that

  449. on your own.

  450. You didn't

  451. conjure that

  452. up on your own.

  453. I didn't

  454. convince you

  455. of that

  456. on my own.

  457. No my friend

  458. the Holy Spirit

  459. of God

  460. is drawing

  461. you to himself.

  462. All you have

  463. to do

  464. is obediently

  465. follow his

  466. lead

  467. and the reality

  468. is our hope

  469. is as real

  470. as the empty

  471. tomb that we

  472. celebrate today

  473. and thank God

  474. for you

  475. it's not

  476. too late

  477. if you're

  478. sitting here

  479. breathing this

  480. morning

  481. and if you're

  482. not let your

  483. neighbor know

  484. but if you're

  485. sitting here

  486. breathing this

  487. morning I want

  488. you to know

  489. it's not

  490. too late.

  491. I think about

  492. what the old

  493. boy said that

  494. fell off the

  495. horse.

  496. He said

  497. betwixt the

  498. stirrup and

  499. the ground

  500. mercy I ask

  501. mercy I found.

  502. My friend

  503. I don't know

  504. what you've

  505. fallen into

  506. today

  507. but I want

  508. you to know

  509. something

  510. you can come

  511. to Jesus.

  512. He'll meet

  513. you

  514. where you

  515. are.

  516. He knows

  517. your circumstances

  518. better than

  519. you do.

  520. He knows

  521. the things

  522. you've done

  523. that nobody

  524. else knows

  525. about but

  526. you and

  527. maybe you

  528. even forgot.

  529. He knows

  530. it all

  531. and yet he

  532. loves you so

  533. much that he

  534. came and lived a

  535. sinless life and

  536. died a sinner's

  537. death for your

  538. sake and for

  539. mine.

  540. Thank God

  541. three days later

  542. he rose again to

  543. remind us of the

  544. eternal life that we

  545. have because of what

  546. he did on the

  547. cross.

  548. if you're here

  549. this morning I

  550. want you to know

  551. it's by a divine

  552. appointment.

  553. If you've never

  554. acknowledged the

  555. Lord Jesus as your

  556. personal Lord and

  557. Savior I promise you

  558. today he'll meet you

  559. where you are.

  560. He'll take you to

  561. where he'd have you

  562. to be.

  563. All you have to do

  564. is surrender your

  565. life to him today.

  566. Lord take me as I

  567. am.

  568. Forgive me of my

  569. sins.

  570. Come into my life

  571. and change me from

  572. this day forward

  573. to live for you.

  574. I'd love to guide

  575. you in that.

  576. In a moment after I

  577. pray we're going to

  578. stand and we're going

  579. to sing but more

  580. important than singing

  581. I encourage you to be

  582. obedient to God.

  583. I'm available for you

  584. to come.

  585. Just tell me what God's

  586. laid upon your heart.

  587. Maybe you're here this

  588. morning and you have

  589. acknowledged the Lord

  590. Jesus Christ but you've

  591. never done that publicly.

  592. It's a private matter

  593. for you.

  594. Jesus by his example

  595. and by his commission

  596. tells us that we need

  597. to follow that with

  598. believers baptism.

  599. We're going to do

  600. that in a couple of

  601. weeks and I'd love to

  602. guide you in that

  603. process and so if you've

  604. never done that I

  605. encourage you to come.

  606. Let's start that

  607. conversation.

  608. Or maybe you're here

  609. and God's guiding you

  610. to Pickens First

  611. Baptist Church.

  612. Man I thank God for

  613. what God's doing in our

  614. midst.

  615. He's doing a wonderful

  616. work.

  617. He might be drawing you

  618. to be a part of that

  619. and if he is then I

  620. encourage you to come.

  621. I'd love to guide you

  622. in what that means.

  623. Guide you in that

  624. process.

  625. Or maybe you're here

  626. and you got all that

  627. down.

  628. But there's just

  629. stuff.

  630. Stuff in your life that

  631. you don't like to

  632. acknowledge but today

  633. the Holy Spirit of God

  634. has spoke to you about

  635. your circumstances and

  636. you realize that today's

  637. the day of decision.

  638. This Easter day is a day

  639. of new beginnings.

  640. things.

  641. It's time to renew.

  642. It's time to be fresh

  643. again with the Lord.

  644. And I'm thankful that

  645. you can do that in the

  646. pew where you'll stand

  647. in just a moment.

  648. You can do it at this

  649. altar or you can do it

  650. with a pastor praying

  651. for you.

  652. I just encourage you

  653. don't leave here until

  654. you've done everything

  655. that God would have you

  656. to do.

  657. Nothing more.

  658. Nothing less.

  659. He'll take care of

  660. everything else.

  661. Just be obedient.

  662. Heavenly Father I love

  663. you and I thank you

  664. for your love for us.

  665. Lead us right now

  666. dear God to follow you

  667. with boldness, with

  668. obedience dear God and

  669. with courage oh God I

  670. pray in Jesus precious

  671. name.

  672. Amen.

  673. Amen.

  674. Amen.
