  1. Thank you, Brian.

  2. Thank you, Brian.

  3. Amen.

  4. Someone once said that in life,

  5. ! it often seems like we're either entering a storm,

  6. ! we're in the midst of a storm,

  7. or maybe we're coming out of a storm.

  8. Here in the Carolinas, we are well acquainted with storms, are we not?

  9. 1996, my wife and I were living in Westbrook.

  10. I went to bed September 5th,

  11. knowing that a hurricane was coming

  12. and going to hit the outer banks of North Carolina,

  13. never expecting that the eye of the storm

  14. would go over Wake Forest, North Carolina,

  15. where we were living.

  16. We woke up about 3 in the morning

  17. to be in the midst of a hurricane.

  18. And it feels like often life can feel that way.

  19. And certainly at a time like this,

  20. as what we've been through as a church

  21. and as a family these last several days,

  22. can feel a bit like a storm.

  23. And I want to spend just a few moments in the Word of God,

  24. just reminding one another, by God's Word,

  25. of what you and I are anchored to.

  26. Because here's the truth.

  27. Giving our lives to Jesus and follow Him

  28. doesn't mean we will live a storm-free life.

  29. But what it does mean is that Jesus is in the boat with us.

  30. Amen?

  31. There's an old country song,

  32. and the woman singing to her romantic love interest says,

  33. I beg your pardon,

  34. I never promised you a...

  35. Oh, you've dated yourself.

  36. Never promised you a rose garden.

  37. The Christian life, it is roses,

  38. but at times it's thorns, is it not?

  39. And I want us to spend just a very brief time together

  40. in the Word of God,

  41. being encouraged by God's Word,

  42. of what you and I are anchored to

  43. in the midst of a storm.

  44. So I want to invite you to open your Bible

  45. to the book of Habakkuk.

  46. It's in the Old Testament,

  47. maybe a book you're not as familiar with,

  48. so take a moment and find the book of Habakkuk.

  49. And we're going to look at Habakkuk chapter 3.

    Habakkuk 3 chapter mention

  50. Habakkuk chapter 3.

    Habakkuk 3 chapter mention

  51. And as you turn there,

  52. I'll set the context for us.

  53. Habakkuk is a prophet of God to God's people,

  54. to the nation of Judah.

  55. And actually, this little three-chapter book of Habakkuk

  56. goes really well with the book of Job.

  57. Because Habakkuk is going to begin to ask the Lord,

  58. Lord, why do we go through challenging times?

  59. As the people of God, Lord,

  60. why do bad things happen to your people?

  61. Why do you allow suffering and challenges and storms

  62. to come into the lives of your people?

  63. And he has this brief three-chapter conversation with the Lord

  64. about going through challenging times.

  65. And the pinnacle of the conversation

  66. between Habakkuk and the Lord

  67. is what we're going to look at.

  68. And it's in chapter 3, beginning in verse 17.

  69. And this is what he writes.

  70. He says,

  71. Though the fig tree should not blossom,

  72. nor fruit be on the vines,

  73. the produce of the olive fell,

  74. and the fields yield no food,

  75. the flock be cut off from the fold,

  76. and there be no herd in the stalls,

  77. yet I will rejoice in the Lord.

  78. I will take joy in the God of my salvation,

  79. for God the Lord is my strength.

  80. He makes my feet like the deer's,

  81. and he makes me tread on my high places.

  82. Let's pray together.

  83. Lord Jesus, we are moved this morning

  84. by your goodness and your faithfulness

  85. and your grace.

  86. And we are reminded that in the midst of the fiercest storm,

  87. you are with your people.

  88. You never leave us nor forsake us.

  89. And in these next few moments,

  90. as we look into your word,

  91. we ask, Holy Spirit,

  92. that you would open our minds,

  93. give us understanding of your word.

  94. We pray, Holy Spirit,

  95. that you would soften our hearts,

  96. that we might be changed

  97. and transformed by your word.

  98. Speak to us, your people,

  99. we pray in Jesus' name.

  100. Amen.

  101. Amen.

  102. If we look at verse 17,

  103. Habakkuk outlines for you and I

  104. the dire situation.

  105. That God's people find themselves in.

  106. Notice what he says in verse 17.

  107. He says,

  108. Though the fig tree should not blossom.

  109. Figs would be a source of food

  110. for God's people at that time.

  111. And so he says,

  112. The fig tree does not blossom,

  113. so there's nothing to eat.

  114. He says,

  115. Nor fruit be on the vines.

  116. He's referring to grapes there.

  117. And of course,

  118. they would take grapes

  119. and press them

  120. and make juice and wine.

  121. And so he says,

  122. There's nothing to eat.

  123. There's nothing to drink.

  124. The fig tree does not blossom.

  125. There is no fruit on the vines.

  126. Watch this.

  127. He says,

  128. The produce of the olive fails.

  129. Now they would take olives

  130. and press them into olive oil,

  131. which primarily they would use

  132. to light their homes.

  133. They would put in lamps.

  134. So stay with me.

  135. He says,

  136. There's nothing to eat.

  137. There's nothing to drink.

  138. And they've turned the power off.

  139. He says,

  140. The fields yield no food.

  141. He emphasizes that again.

  142. He says,

  143. The flock be cut off from the fold.

  144. It's referring to sheep.

  145. And the primary function of sheep in that day

  146. would be they would shear them,

  147. take the wool,

  148. and make clothing.

  149. He says,

  150. There's nothing to eat.

  151. There's nothing to drink.

  152. They've turned off the power

  153. and all of my clothes are gone.

  154. And then he says,

  155. And there be no herd in the stalls.

  156. He's referring to oxen

  157. that they would use to work the land.

  158. So listen to his predicament.

  159. He says,

  160. I have nothing to eat.

  161. I have nothing to drink.

  162. I have nothing to wear.

  163. They've turned the power off

  164. and I've lost my job.

  165. Sounds like a country music song,

  166. does it not?

  167. He's lost everything.

  168. But notice this one little word

  169. in verse 18.

  170. He says,

  171. Yet.

  172. Yet in the midst of losing everything,

  173. in the midst of the biggest storm,

  174. what does he do?

  175. He says,

  176. I will rejoice in the Lord.

  177. He says,

  178. I've lost everything

  179. and I'm going to choir practice.

  180. And it would be fair to say,

  181. but Habakkuk,

  182. what do you have to think about?

  183. And he says,

  184. I have three truths

  185. that anchor me

  186. in the midst of difficult times.

  187. And here they are for us, church.

  188. Number one,

  189. in times of hardship

  190. and difficulty,

  191. we're reminded

  192. that God is our source

  193. of salvation.

  194. In times of hardship

  195. and difficulty,

  196. we are reminded

  197. that God is our source

  198. of salvation.

  199. Look what he says there

  200. in verse 18.

  201. He says,

  202. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord.

  203. I will take joy

  204. in the God of my salvation.

  205. The God of my salvation.

  206. The apostle Paul says,

  207. To live is Christ

  208. and to die is what?

  209. Gain.

  210. To live is Christ

  211. and to die is gain.

  212. See, for those of us

  213. who know and love

  214. and follow Jesus,

  215. even death has been conquered

  216. by the Lord Jesus Christ.

  217. Amen, church?

  218. And so death has no hold

  219. on the people of God.

  220. And so he says,

  221. Listen,

  222. in the midst of hard times

  223. and difficulties,

  224. never lose sight

  225. that God is your source

  226. of salvation.

  227. And this life

  228. is but a vapor.

  229. This life is but a vapor.

  230. Daniel and I have been,

  231. as we would say in England,

  232. we have been best mates

  233. since the age of 16.

  234. Now, you know how it works.

  235. In my mind,

  236. Daniel and I are still 16.

  237. Right?

  238. When I saw that video,

  239. I just chuckled.

  240. Brian told me this morning,

  241. he said,

  242. Oh, Daniel's made a video.

  243. And I literally busted out laughing.

  244. I was like,

  245. Listen,

  246. a heart attack's not going

  247. to stop that man

  248. from talking.

  249. Amen?

  250. It's not going to do it.

  251. Right?

  252. I've known him

  253. my whole life.

  254. Here's what we know.

  255. Is that life goes by quickly.

  256. One moment you're 16

  257. and the next moment you're 56.

  258. Right?

  259. Our life is but a vapor.

  260. But salvation in Jesus

  261. is for an eternity.

  262. Amen, church?

  263. It's for an eternity.

  264. And so,

  265. when the storms are brewing,

  266. when the waves are crashing,

  267. what do we have to sing about?

  268. I'll tell you what,

  269. we have something to sing about

  270. for all eternity.

  271. And that is,

  272. we have a home in glory land

  273. that outshines the sun.

  274. Do you know that song?

  275. I've got a home in glory land.

  276. If I had a banjo,

  277. I'd start picking it.

  278. Amen?

  279. Right?

  280. And we've got a home in glory land

  281. that outshines the sun.

  282. And for that and that alone,

  283. we have all eternity

  284. to worship Jesus.

  285. In the midst of the storm,

  286. we hold on to the truth

  287. that God is our source

  288. of salvation.

  289. Death has no hold

  290. on the people of God.

  291. Secondly,

  292. he says this,

  293. in the midst of challenging hard times,

  294. we are anchored to the truth

  295. that God is our source of salvation.

  296. But secondly,

  297. we're anchored to the truth

  298. that God is our source of strength.

  299. God is our source of strength.

  300. Look what he says there.

  301. Verse 18,

  302. he says,

  303. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord.

  304. I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

  305. God the Lord is my what?

  306. Strength.

  307. God the Lord is my strength.

  308. In the midst of trying times,

  309. we worship Jesus for his salvation,

  310. but we are reminded

  311. that not only is he our source of salvation,

  312. he is our source of strength.

  313. The word there in Hebrew

  314. means the force of an army.

  315. The force of an army.

  316. There are many names for God

  317. in the Old Testament,

  318. and one is the Lord of hosts.

  319. It literally means

  320. the Lord of heaven's armies.

  321. That all the armies of heaven

  322. are at our disposal

  323. as we are strengthened by God himself.

  324. And it's lovely

  325. because he says,

  326. The Lord is my strength.

  327. And the word Lord there

  328. is the personal name for God.

  329. It's Yahweh.

  330. It's this personal God

  331. who knows us

  332. and loves us

  333. and knows the very number of hairs on our head

  334. and cares for us.

  335. And he is our strength.

  336. Have you ever faced a trial in life

  337. and you just didn't know

  338. if you were going to make it through?

  339. Have you ever cried out to the Lord

  340. and said,

  341. Lord, I don't know

  342. if I can take it one more day.

  343. Lord, I'm not sure

  344. if our marriage can bear this.

  345. I'm not sure

  346. if our children

  347. will make it through this.

  348. Lord, I'm not sure

  349. how we're going to endure this.

  350. Can I just say,

  351. take heart.

  352. Take heart.

  353. The Apostle Paul

  354. writing of his own storm

  355. in 2 Corinthians chapter 12,

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  356. said he called out to the Lord

  357. three times

  358. to remove it from him.

  359. This is the answer

  360. the Lord gave him.

  361. He said,

  362. Oh, Paul,

  363. don't you know

  364. that my grace is sufficient for you

  365. for my power

  366. is made perfect

  367. in weakness.

  368. And Paul says,

  369. for when I am weak,

  370. then I am strong.

  371. Do you know it's okay to be weak?

  372. It's okay to cry.

  373. It's okay to not have

  374. all the answers.

  375. It's okay.

  376. Because Jesus does.

  377. Amen, church?

  378. And the Bible says,

  379. when we are weak,

  380. that's when he is strong.

  381. And in fact,

  382. I would go on to say,

  383. I just believe

  384. the weaker I get,

  385. the stronger he gets in me.

  386. And maybe you've had

  387. that experience

  388. where you've looked back

  389. on those storms

  390. in your own life

  391. and you don't even recollect

  392. how the Lord did it,

  393. but what you know is

  394. that he carried you

  395. every step of the way.

  396. He carried you

  397. every step of the way.

  398. He is our source

  399. of salvation.

  400. He is our source

  401. of strength.

  402. But then lastly,

  403. church,

  404. we see this

  405. in times of hardship

  406. and difficulty.

  407. God is our source

  408. of security.

  409. God is our source

  410. of security.

  411. Look at verse 19 again.

  412. He says,

  413. God, the Lord,

  414. is my strength

  415. and he makes my feet

  416. like the deers,

  417. like the feet of a deer,

  418. and he makes me tread

  419. on my high places.

  420. The word deer there

  421. is more akin

  422. to what we would think of

  423. as a mountain goat.

  424. Now, we don't have

  425. many of those.

  426. At Table Rock,

  427. you have to go

  428. more out west,

  429. Wyoming or Montana

  430. or somewhere like that.

  431. And a mountain goat

  432. is a spectacular animal.

  433. They live in an altitude

  434. usually of about

  435. 13,000 feet.

  436. They're the largest

  437. living animal

  438. at that altitude.

  439. And if you've ever seen

  440. a nature documentary

  441. of mountain goats,

  442. they have this ability

  443. to climb

  444. near vertical cliffs.

  445. And their security,

  446. the way they're able

  447. to get away

  448. from their predators,

  449. they're not poisonous,

  450. they don't have big horns,

  451. they're not very fast,

  452. but what they can do

  453. is they can climb.

  454. And their security

  455. is in their feet.

  456. They know they can go places

  457. that their enemy can't.

  458. They know they can go places

  459. that their enemy can't.

  460. Those that are hunting them.

  461. A mountain lion

  462. can't climb

  463. like a mountain goat.

  464. And so David here

  465. is saying

  466. that just like

  467. that mountain goat

  468. finds its security

  469. in its feet,

  470. look what he says.

  471. He says,

  472. the Lord makes my feet

  473. like the feet

  474. of the mountain goat.

  475. He makes me tread

  476. on the high places.

  477. He's talking about

  478. being secure

  479. in the Lord.

  480. Being secure

  481. in the Lord.

  482. The Lord

  483. is our salvation,

  484. He is our strength,

  485. and He is

  486. our security.

  487. David says it

  488. this way

  489. in Psalm 91.

  490. He says,

  491. whoever dwells

  492. in the shelter

  493. of the Most High

  494. will rest

  495. in the shadow

  496. of the Almighty.

  497. And I will say

  498. of the Lord,

  499. He is my refuge

  500. and my fortress,

  501. my God

  502. in whom

  503. I

  504. trust.

  505. Our

  506. security

  507. as followers

  508. of Jesus

  509. is not

  510. in the stock market,

  511. it's not in the bank,

  512. it's not in the White House.

  513. Our security

  514. is firmly placed

  515. at the foot of the cross.

  516. Amen, church?

  517. And it's in Christ

  518. and Christ alone

  519. that we find

  520. our security.

  521. So let me encourage us

  522. this morning.

  523. Wherever you might be,

  524. maybe things for you

  525. this morning

  526. are smooth sailing

  527. and praise the Lord

  528. and make sure you

  529. praise Him for that.

  530. But maybe for you

  531. the waters are a bit choppy.

  532. Maybe things are not

  533. as you would like them to be

  534. and you find yourself

  535. in the midst of a storm.

  536. Can I encourage you

  537. to rejoice?

  538. To rejoice?

  539. Can I encourage you

  540. to be reminded

  541. that even in the

  542. biggest challenge

  543. that the Lord Jesus

  544. is your salvation,

  545. He is your strength

  546. and He is your

  547. security.

  548. We have

  549. two children.

  550. Our daughter is 22

  551. and our son

  552. is 20.

  553. And we've spent most,

  554. they spent most of their lives

  555. in England.

  556. We've been living overseas

  557. for 18 years now.

  558. We spent 17 years of that

  559. living in Birmingham,

  560. England.

  561. And when our kids

  562. were quite little,

  563. our son was probably

  564. about four years old,

  565. we went to go do

  566. a fun day out

  567. as a family.

  568. And we went up

  569. to the mountains

  570. and there's a place there

  571. not far from our home

  572. called the Heights

  573. of Abraham.

  574. And it's an old

  575. lead mine

  576. and it's about

  577. 4,000 feet up

  578. and you have to ride

  579. a chairlift.

  580. We ride this chairlift up

  581. and we spend the day

  582. taking a tour

  583. of this mine.

  584. So we're about

  585. 500 feet underground

  586. in the earth

  587. and we have hard hats

  588. on with lights

  589. and we're taking

  590. this tour

  591. of this lead mine.

  592. And there's about

  593. 20 people

  594. in our tour group

  595. and we're at the

  596. deepest part

  597. of the mine

  598. and the tour guide

  599. says,

  600. look,

  601. I'm going to

  602. instruct them

  603. to turn the lights

  604. off and you're going

  605. to turn your lights

  606. off and I want you

  607. to appreciate

  608. just how dark

  609. it would be

  610. if you were a miner

  611. here in the 1800s.

  612. And as soon as

  613. he said that,

  614. I thought,

  615. where is Max?

  616. That's our son.

  617. Now Max is a

  618. four-year-old

  619. full of life

  620. and energy.

  621. He was climbing

  622. stalactites

  623. and hanging from

  624. stalagmites

  625. or whatever you do

  626. on those things,

  627. running everywhere

  628. around this mine

  629. and I immediately

  630. thought,

  631. where is Max?

  632. And as soon as

  633. the thought hit my mind,

  634. the lights went out.

  635. And I've never

  636. experienced

  637. that level

  638. of darkness.

  639. Didn't know it existed.

  640. 500 feet

  641. underground

  642. in the middle

  643. of the earth,

  644. no natural light.

  645. You couldn't

  646. see a thing

  647. and as a dad,

  648. my heart

  649. was beating

  650. out of my chest.

  651. And I'm thinking,

  652. has he fallen?

  653. What has happened?

  654. Because I hear nothing.

  655. And in the midst

  656. of the darkness,

  657. I feel

  658. five little fingers

  659. grab my hand

  660. and pull me down.

  661. And I came down

  662. and in my ear,

  663. I hear this,

  664. Dada,

  665. is that you?

  666. I said,

  667. yes son,

  668. it's me.

  669. And he said,

  670. then I'm going

  671. to be okay.

  672. I'm going to be okay.

  673. Maybe this morning

  674. you need to reach out.

  675. Take the hand

  676. of your Heavenly Father

  677. and say,

  678. Dad,

  679. is that you?

  680. And he'll say,

  681. yes it is.

  682. And I promise you,

  683. you're going to be okay.

  684. Let me pray for us.

  685. Lord Jesus,

  686. we love you.

  687. We praise you.

  688. We thank you for your word.

  689. God,

  690. I just pray

  691. for one who would be here

  692. this morning

  693. who find themselves

  694. in the midst

  695. of a trial,

  696. of a storm,

  697. of a hardship.

  698. I pray that this morning

  699. they would reach out,

  700. take your hand,

  701. and that they would know

  702. they're going to be okay.

  703. Okay.

  704. Bless us,

  705. your people.

  706. We humbly ask

  707. in Jesus' name.

  708. Amen.

  709. Let's stand together.

  710. We're going to sing

  711. and Jeff is here.

  712. If you'd like to come

  713. and speak to him

  714. to pray

  715. however the Lord leads

  716. and you obey

  717. as we sing together.
