  1. Amen. Good, good music. If you have Bibles, I want you to turn to Genesis chapter 50.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  2. Genesis chapter 50. If you remember a long time ago, we were talking about Joseph. That

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  3. was back before vacation Bible school, before graduation, and before the preacher decided

  4. to fall out. Slow down quite a bit. So, where were we? Well, let's get back at it. Joseph

  5. had risen through a lot of hardship to govern Egypt, through a famine, and to manage what

  6. became the breadbasket of the world. And when the brothers that sold him into slavery came

  7. to Egypt for help, they unknowingly faced him. And when he revealed himself to them, he then

  8. took in the family. He cared for them, just like his beloved daddy would want. However,

  9. when dad died, and all that's left are the sorry brothers that sold him into slavery, the

  10. plot thickens. Genesis chapter 50, beginning in verse 15, it says this, when Joseph's brothers

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  11. saw that their father was dead, they said, it may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us

  12. back for all the evil that we did to him. So they sent a message to Joseph saying, your father

  13. gave this command before he died, say to Joseph, please forgive the transgression of your brothers

  14. and their sin because they did evil to you. And now please forgive the transgression of the

  15. servants of the God of your father. Joseph wept when they spoke to him. His brothers also came

  16. and fell down before him and said, behold, we are your servants. But Joseph said to them, do not fear.

  17. For am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good

  18. to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today. So do not fear.

  19. I will provide for you and your little ones. Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

  20. What an amazing godly answer Joseph gave them. It goes above and beyond and makes him a real hero.

  21. I mean, listen, if going from prison after being falsely accused to managing the food distribution

  22. successfully for really all the known world, if that don't make you a hero, and it does, by the way,

  23. I'll tell you what else does. His response to his brothers. Remember, these are the sorry brothers

  24. that sold him into slavery, and now they are scared to death of him. They had in their mind that he had

  25. saved their lives and restored them because he loved his dad. And now dad just died, and they probably

  26. wet their tunics again, bowed their knees, and said, please make us slaves. And the part that's not

  27. written or said is instead of killing us. And they didn't say that because they didn't want to give

  28. them those ideas. And he looks at them and says, I'm not God. I'm not here to judge you. You tried to do

  29. evil against me, but God used that to save many lives, including yours.

  30. I wonder how many times Joseph ever asked the hardest question before he ever heard the answer.

  31. Hardest question anybody ever has asked me is why. It's the toughest question I've ever been asked,

  32. and I've been asked that many times. And before you ask me your why,

  33. I will tell you, I may not give you, I probably won't give you a definitive answer.

  34. Because there are some things in life that we just don't know. I can give you some hints.

  35. Let me explain. Young inquisitive minds like to know, and if they're not allowed to do something,

  36. they're going to ask you why. Why can't I do that? And after several whys, at least with my girls,

  37. after several whys, it always ended up because I said so. That was about the way it ended. Not

  38. the best parenting, but that's the way it goes. But you take them to the zoo and an animal does

  39. something that you don't know how to explain to them. Instead of taking it in and just enjoying

  40. the moment, the child says why. Well, I don't know why monkeys catch their excrement and throw it.

  41. I'm not sure. He's probably a dude, you know. I mean, don't ask, but just take it in

  42. and don't ever do it. But then there's also harder questions. Why questions that we face?

  43. When you see a loved one suffer? When one is snuffed out too early? Why? I prayed, I've asked

  44. God to intervene, and I don't see his intervention. It's not what I anticipated. Why?

  45. Why? In April of 2011, the rural Mississippi County that we lived in got hit in a devastating

  46. EF3 tornado. And 12 hours later, after that tornado came through, another tornado came through

  47. and crossed the path of the previous tornado. The counties north and south of us got hit a lot,

  48. but this one had kind of bullseyeed upon us. 200 homes were damaged. Dozens were destroyed.

  49. 50 affected homes had no insurance at all. Three were killed in that rural small county. Six were killed

  50. in the area around that county that we claimed as our own. Smithville, Mississippi, about 30 miles

  51. from us got wiped off the map. And that got a lot of attention. So a lot of crews and a lot of volunteers

  52. were going to Smithville. One of those tornadoes, after coming through, hit Tuscaloosa, Alabama,

  53. and knocked out part of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. That got a lot of attention. A lot of crews went there.

  54. Disaster relief units flooded to those areas because of the news media. Chickasaw County didn't get a lot

  55. of attention. It wasn't until Smithville and Tuscaloosa and those type areas were saturated with folks

  56. that they began to trickle back. Or maybe somebody knew somebody in our area and their church came.

  57. Volunteers made their way to us when other areas got full. And a couple of local pastors

  58. leaders led the command center for cleanup from the front seats of their car, directed volunteers to

  59. strategic spots to work. And I was one of those two preachers. I was a, I met a man one day whose brother

  60. died. I had heard there was damage in that area and I rode down that road and the brother would, there was a

  61. mobile home that was there and the brother was in the back of that mobile home. And the survivor was in

  62. the front room. He said the wind and the storms were coming and then he felt a stillness in the air.

  63. And then he said, I could feel my house just begin to twist just a little bit and hear it.

  64. And he said, the next thing I knew, I was standing in the front yard

  65. and my home was gone.

  66. It was across the road, probably 75 feet, just in shambles.

  67. And his brother

  68. was in that mess.

  69. He died in the rubble.

  70. I know a milkman who was

  71. going down the road in his milk truck,

  72. drove right through the middle of the tornado,

  73. picked up that truck and it

  74. threw him across a field

  75. and into thankfully

  76. a muddy field and he sank

  77. in the mud, broke many bones

  78. in his body.

  79. He always walked with a limp

  80. after that, but he lived on.

  81. Amazingly after

  82. that. Then there was

  83. the lady down the street

  84. that the storm

  85. they said had just

  86. twisted her when they found her.

  87. Why?

  88. There were a lot of why

  89. questions when I went door to door

  90. and asked how we could help.

  91. Why does a tornado

  92. come and take innocent lives?

  93. Why does a

  94. why does God allow a person

  95. to lose their house

  96. and their home

  97. and the next one

  98. right next to it

  99. may be sorry folk

  100. next door?

  101. Their home don't even look scathed.

  102. Why my brother

  103. and not me?

  104. How do you deal with that?

  105. It's the hardest questions.

  106. Why do my loved one

  107. make such sinful decisions?

  108. Why do I have to deal

  109. with such laws?

  110. Why do I feel like

  111. life is so unfair?

  112. I've heard the whys.

  113. I have my own whys.

  114. And when I look deeper

  115. at my whys,

  116. I begin to find

  117. an answer

  118. about other people's whys.

  119. Sometimes I have whys

  120. about things in Scripture.

  121. That's what sermons come from.

  122. One that I came across

  123. that gets me

  124. is in 2 Samuel 23, verse 20.

    2 Samuel 23:20

  125. And it says,

  126. and Benaiah,

  127. the son of Jehuda,

  128. was a valiant man

  129. of Kabziel,

  130. a doer

  131. of great deeds.

  132. He struck down

  133. two arrows of Moab.

  134. He also went down

  135. and struck down

  136. a lion in a pit

  137. on a day

  138. when snow

  139. had fallen.

  140. Okay, well,

  141. maybe that's not

  142. earth-shattering,

  143. brain-twisting passages.

  144. I don't know.

  145. But you wasn't

  146. in the snowy pit

  147. with him,

  148. were you?

  149. Because the difference

  150. in major and minor events

  151. are who's involved in it.

  152. And if I'm involved in it,

  153. it gets pretty major

  154. for me.

  155. Now, if I heard

  156. of someone in a pit

  157. with a lion,

  158. not a big deal.

  159. I might even turn

  160. the channel.

  161. But if I'm in a pit

  162. with a lion

  163. on a snowy day

  164. and I make it out alive,

  165. I'm speaking

  166. at Wild Game Fest

  167. all over the nation

  168. riding around

  169. on a big old bus.

  170. It's a major deal.

  171. But why in Scripture?

  172. Well, that passage

  173. in Scripture

  174. is there

  175. because it was

  176. a significant happening

  177. in his life

  178. and it would have

  179. seemed really bad.

  180. However,

  181. when he walked

  182. out of that pit

  183. with a few scratches

  184. and realized

  185. what he had conquered,

  186. it made him stronger

  187. to face

  188. much more in life

  189. because this man

  190. did mighty things

  191. for God.

  192. He was a priest,

  193. but he was not

  194. the kind of priest

  195. that you would think of

  196. when you think of a priest.

  197. He was a worship leader.

  198. He was an intercessor.

  199. He was a man of God.

  200. He was honorable

  201. in his walk,

  202. but also in the strength

  203. as a protector.

  204. He's the one

  205. that escorted Solomon

  206. during his coronation parade.

  207. He was a hero killer.

  208. He killed a man

  209. that stood

  210. seven and a half feet tall

  211. that carried

  212. a Goliath-sized spear.

  213. Benaiah,

  214. with a staff in his hand,

  215. snatched the spear

  216. out of the man's hand

  217. and killed him with it.

  218. Not only that,

  219. but he commanded

  220. David's 30 mighty men

  221. and he was a mighty man

  222. and he did many mighty things

  223. and one of them

  224. was that he killed a lion

  225. on a snowy day

  226. in a pit.

  227. Now, I understand

  228. that most people

  229. would run from a lion,

  230. but if you do,

  231. it'll do you no good

  232. because a lion

  233. can run 35 miles per hour.

  234. I know because

  235. I outran one one day.

  236. When they don't want to run,

  237. they can leap 30 feet

  238. in a single bound.

  239. They eat manwich for lunch.

  240. But Danaiah faced it

  241. and he killed it.

  242. You never know

  243. what you'll have to face

  244. and you're bothered

  245. and disturbed

  246. and even mad

  247. about what you have to face.

  248. However,

  249. it's the things

  250. that we have to face

  251. that make us ready

  252. for whatever it is

  253. God's preparing us for.

  254. It's the things

  255. that we face

  256. that make us stronger

  257. in him.

  258. It's the things

  259. that we face

  260. that help us to grow.

  261. Benaiah was a lot more

  262. than a lion killer,

  263. but his lion

  264. killing strength

  265. strengthened him

  266. for other things

  267. that God had in store for him.

  268. So why do bad things

  269. happen to good people?

  270. Preparation.

  271. Sometimes

  272. it happens

  273. to prepare us

  274. for more

  275. that he has in store.

  276. Let me tell you

  277. about a horrible

  278. natural disaster

  279. that overwhelms

  280. anything and everything

  281. that we've ever experienced

  282. or that we've heard about

  283. concerning weather-related tragedies.

  284. A long, long time ago

  285. there was a flood,

  286. a huge flood,

  287. so catastrophic

  288. that the whole earth

  289. flooded.

  290. Not just part of it,

  291. all of it.

  292. Only one

  293. extended family

  294. survived.

  295. And the only animals

  296. that survived

  297. were the ones

  298. that boarded

  299. onto that boat

  300. or those

  301. that lived

  302. in the sea.

  303. It was a,

  304. those that lived

  305. in the sea.

  306. It was a complete

  307. cleansing

  308. of the land.

  309. And it had never

  310. happened before.

  311. It has never

  312. happened since.

  313. It will not

  314. happen again.

  315. It's guaranteed

  316. by the greatest

  317. meteorologist

  318. that has ever

  319. lived.

  320. As a matter of fact,

  321. this meteorologist

  322. is the one

  323. that developed

  324. meteorology

  325. and created

  326. the sun

  327. and the moon

  328. and the stars

  329. and placed

  330. them

  331. in orbit.

  332. Why in the world

  333. would a loving God

  334. destroy the whole earth

  335. as it was known

  336. and preserve

  337. one family

  338. and many pairs

  339. of animals

  340. to replenish it?

  341. To cleanse it?

  342. It says it over

  343. and over again

  344. in Genesis chapter 6

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  345. that he wanted

  346. to cleanse

  347. the earth

  348. of evil

  349. and lead

  350. all living

  351. to turn their eyes

  352. to him.

  353. So why do bad

  354. things happen

  355. to good people?

  356. Because even good

  357. people are guilty.

  358. As a matter of fact,

  359. it could be argued

  360. there ain't any good people.

  361. Even wonderful people

  362. are not perfect.

  363. And those events

  364. prepare us

  365. for what's to come.

  366. But there's another

  367. reason why

  368. bad things happen

  369. and that's reflection.

  370. Bad things

  371. happen to cause us

  372. to reflect upon

  373. our lives

  374. and upon God

  375. and to turn our eyes

  376. to him.

  377. And when we do that,

  378. cleansing can come

  379. that way.

  380. I mean,

  381. if that's hard

  382. for you to understand,

  383. you're not the first one.

  384. Let me reiterate.

  385. Joseph's brothers

  386. had a hard time

  387. with it.

  388. They had sold

  389. their younger,

  390. more favored brother

  391. into slavery

  392. and then made him

  393. out for dead.

  394. They had went

  395. about their way

  396. until a famine came

  397. and in their hunger,

  398. they went to the only place

  399. that they could find relief

  400. and that was Egypt.

  401. There they found

  402. the governor of Egypt

  403. who held the world's economies

  404. in his silos.

  405. And little did they know

  406. that the governor

  407. was their long-souled brother

  408. who had prospered

  409. and succeeded

  410. either in spite

  411. of their action

  412. or because of their action.

  413. And once he confronted them,

  414. he also comforted them.

  415. He also provided for them.

  416. And then their mutual father died

  417. and they knew

  418. they were in trouble.

  419. Notice what happens

  420. in our passage.

  421. The brothers got together

  422. and thought,

  423. maybe he did the good

  424. that he did for us

  425. for the sake of daddy.

  426. Now what do we do?

  427. And they grew very afraid

  428. and they sent a message

  429. to him.

  430. But it's not what they said,

  431. it's what he said

  432. and I'll reiterate.

  433. It says,

  434. but Joseph said to them,

  435. do not fear

  436. for I am,

  437. am I in the place of God?

  438. As for you,

  439. you meant evil against me

  440. but God meant it for good.

  441. To bring it about

  442. that many people

  443. should be kept alive

  444. as they are today.

  445. How in the world

  446. could God have meant

  447. such a thing for good?

  448. I mean,

  449. Joseph said

  450. without his

  451. God-given insight

  452. and preparation

  453. for this famine,

  454. many more would have died

  455. due to the famine.

  456. God allowed

  457. the dreams

  458. that he had,

  459. God allowed

  460. the slavery

  461. that he endured,

  462. God allowed

  463. the prison

  464. that he endured,

  465. God allowed

  466. even the forgetfulness

  467. because if you don't remember,

  468. they left him

  469. in prison

  470. for two years

  471. because his friends

  472. forgot about him.

  473. Didn't tell

  474. what his abilities were.

  475. And that two years

  476. in prison

  477. actually

  478. was spiritually

  479. strategic

  480. because when he came out,

  481. the timing

  482. of the famine

  483. was upon them.

  484. It was all

  485. in God's plan

  486. but it sure

  487. didn't feel like it

  488. when he was

  489. in the dungeon.

  490. However,

  491. by doing that,

  492. in that amount

  493. of time,

  494. Joseph showed up

  495. at the proper place,

  496. at the proper time

  497. to feed the known world.

  498. Why do bad things

  499. happen to good people?

  500. Scripture tells us,

  501. as I've mentioned already,

  502. that we're not good.

  503. Don't take offense

  504. to that.

  505. We're all

  506. in the same boat.

  507. We've done wrong

  508. and that separates us

  509. from God.

  510. Outside of Christ,

  511. we'd have no hope

  512. of reunion with God.

  513. But because of

  514. what Christ did for us

  515. and demonstrated

  516. his own love for us

  517. that while we were

  518. yet sinners,

  519. while he knew

  520. everything about us

  521. and everything

  522. we had done,

  523. yet he was willing

  524. to give his life

  525. for us to have

  526. the opportunity

  527. to come back

  528. to the Lord.

  529. So why do bad

  530. things happen?

  531. I'll tell you why.

  532. Salvation.

  533. Earthquakes

  534. and tsunamis,

  535. they're bad things,

  536. aren't they?

  537. You've seen the devastation

  538. that happens with that.

  539. Bad things come

  540. from them,

  541. but does anything

  542. good come from them?

  543. Yes.

  544. Of course it does.

  545. Peter Ward

  546. and Donald Brownlee

  547. explain in their book

  548. Rare Earth

  549. how earthquakes

  550. and the ensuing tsunamis

  551. are necessary.

  552. There is an anthopic

  553. principle at work.

  554. In other words,

  555. we need them to live.

  556. Let me explain

  557. as best I can

  558. and I am

  559. science illiterate.

  560. earthquakes

  561. and tsunamis

  562. are the consequence

  563. of plate tectonics.

  564. That's the giant plates

  565. of rock and earth

  566. that move below

  567. the surface

  568. of the earth.

  569. And earth is unique

  570. in having such plates.

  571. And without them,

  572. there would be no large

  573. mountain ranges

  574. or continents.

  575. Without the movement

  576. of them,

  577. which causes

  578. these disasters,

  579. the earth's land

  580. would be submerged

  581. to the depth

  582. of several thousand feet.

  583. Fish could live here,

  584. we could not.

  585. Plate tectonics

  586. regulate our climate.

  587. They prevent scorching

  588. and freezing temperatures.

  589. As a matter of fact,

  590. the movement

  591. of these plates

  592. are necessary

  593. for us to live.

  594. So why did God

  595. build it

  596. where earthquakes

  597. are necessary?

  598. Or why didn't he build it

  599. where they wasn't necessary?

  600. Ward is an eminent

  601. paleontologist

  602. and Brownlee

  603. is a college

  604. professor astronomer.

  605. And they say

  606. that some creatures

  607. could live here

  608. without earthquakes

  609. but not Homo sapiens.

  610. And if you forgot,

  611. that's us,

  612. by the way.

  613. Our planet

  614. requires oxygen

  615. and we need

  616. a warming sun

  617. and we need water.

  618. Now,

  619. I will warn you

  620. that sun can cause

  621. a sunstroke

  622. and water

  623. can cause drowning.

  624. However,

  625. both give life

  626. and both

  627. are necessary

  628. for us to live.

  629. So why do bad things

  630. happen

  631. to good people?

  632. It may surprise you

  633. so that we can live.

  634. Salvation.

  635. That's why.

  636. The worst thing,

  637. the most unjust event,

  638. the most horrible

  639. happening in all of history

  640. could easily cause one

  641. to beg the question,

  642. why?

  643. Why?

  644. Why?

  645. Why does God's son

  646. leave his home in heaven

  647. to come into

  648. a very humble means

  649. and live his life

  650. as a servant

  651. for many?

  652. Why did the people

  653. he came to

  654. mostly reject him,

  655. falsely accuse him

  656. and fail to acknowledge

  657. that he was the only

  658. perfect person

  659. to ever live?

  660. Why did they become

  661. so adamant

  662. about being against him

  663. that they arrested him,

  664. that they falsely accused him,

  665. that they beat him

  666. nearly to death

  667. only to hang him

  668. on the cross

  669. of the cruelest death

  670. known to man,

  671. crucifixion

  672. of the Roman Empire

  673. on a Roman cross?

  674. Why did they strip him?

  675. Why did they demean him

  676. by gambling for his clothes?

  677. Why did they mock him

  678. as he died?

  679. Why did they throw

  680. his corpse

  681. into a borrowed tomb

  682. without any celebration

  683. of life?

  684. Why did the worst thing

  685. happen

  686. to the very best person

  687. for the same reason

  688. we have earthquakes

  689. so that we can live?

  690. Salvation.

  691. I don't think it's ironic

  692. that the earthquake

  693. quaked

  694. as he died.

  695. The worst thing

  696. happened

  697. so that the greatest

  698. thing could happen

  699. because three days later

  700. he rose

  701. proclaiming his life

  702. as he had previously

  703. done with his mouth.

  704. In John 11, 25

  705. he said,

  706. I am the resurrection

  707. and the life.

  708. Whoever believes in me

  709. though he die

  710. yet shall he live.

  711. Why do bad things happen?

  712. Well, there's a variety

  713. of reasons

  714. but the primary one

  715. is so that we can live.

  716. Salvation

  717. or as Joseph put it,

  718. what others

  719. meant for evil

  720. and what others

  721. take as evil,

  722. God meant

  723. for good.

  724. So why do bad things

  725. happen

  726. to prepare us,

  727. to lead us,

  728. to reflect,

  729. which leads

  730. to salvation.

  731. Romans 8, 28

  732. says this,

  733. and we know

  734. that for those

  735. who love God

  736. all things

  737. work together

  738. for good

  739. for those

  740. who are called

  741. according

  742. to his purpose.

  743. So why do bad

  744. things happen?

  745. Because God

  746. said so.

  747. That's why.

  748. Let that be enough

  749. because God's

  750. at work.

  751. God's at work

  752. in the good.

  753. God's at work

  754. in the bad.

  755. Praise the Lord

  756. and bless

  757. his holy name.

  758. What is it today

  759. that you need

  760. to entrust to him?

  761. It might be

  762. your life.

  763. I'm so glad

  764. you're in the house

  765. of God this morning.

  766. I'm so glad

  767. you heard

  768. the story

  769. of what Christ

  770. has done for you.

  771. I believe

  772. it's a divine

  773. appointment.

  774. And if you're

  775. here this morning

  776. and you've never

  777. surrendered your life

  778. to the Lord

  779. Jesus Christ,

  780. I want you to know

  781. that he'll meet

  782. you where you are

  783. and if you'll

  784. just admit

  785. of your need

  786. of him

  787. and ask him

  788. to save you

  789. and change you,

  790. your life

  791. will forever

  792. be changed.

  793. Today's the day

  794. of salvation.

  795. Whosoever will

  796. may come

  797. to him.

  798. Maybe you're here

  799. this morning

  800. and you've done

  801. that but you've

  802. only acknowledged

  803. that privately.

  804. You've never

  805. acknowledged that

  806. publicly.

  807. And Jesus

  808. says if you're

  809. ashamed of me

  810. before others

  811. I'll be ashamed

  812. of you before

  813. my Father.

  814. What that means

  815. is it's not real

  816. if you're ashamed

  817. of it.

  818. So in reality

  819. if you've never

  820. publicly acknowledged

  821. the salvation

  822. that God's given

  823. you, I encourage

  824. you to come.

  825. Jesus by his

  826. commission, by his

  827. example told us

  828. to follow that

  829. with baptism.

  830. We'd love to

  831. guide you in that

  832. process.

  833. We're not doing

  834. it this morning.

  835. We'll set that up

  836. in the future

  837. but you obey God

  838. as he speaks

  839. to your heart and

  840. life.

  841. Maybe you're
